Francis Schaeffer “BASIS FOR HUMAN DIGNITY” Whatever…HTTHR

I read lots of Francis Schaeffer and Dr. C. Everett Koop’s books and watched their films in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s as did Keith and Melody Green. Below Melody Green quotes some of this same material that was used by Schaeffer and Koop in their film series WHATEVER HAPPENED TO HUMAN RACE?

Abortion: Avenues For Action

Melody Green and Sharon Bennett

Avenues for ActionHopefully this list of things you can do will be a real help as you seek the Lord about how you can stand with Him against abortion. If you haven’t already read “Abortion: Attitudes For Action”, please read it. It’s not only important to find out what to do, but also the attitude of heart in which to do it.

“Sometimes the intensity of God’s truth revealed through the Newsletter is difficult for us to hear, and such is the case with your past and present stand on abortion. Up until this point, all we’ve done is sit back and complain. This just doesn’t cut it any more. We know the Lord would have us do something, but we’ve never had the guts. We just can’t sit idly by. Babies are dying NOW!!

“Please send whatever information you have on anti-abortion strategy. We want to be involved as those who love the Lord Jesus and, like Him, are grieved by the effects of sin on the innocent gifts of His love.”

-Michael Henry, Reynoldsburg, OH

Pray

Your first impulse might be to skip over this one and get to the reallypractical things you can do, but you’ll be making a big mistake. Any good done in the name of the Lord must be done in the strength and the absolute direction of the Spirit of God. God honors the prayers of the saints today as He has from the very beginning. Only eternity will tell what humble and earnest prayer has done to rock kingdoms. Make it a point to intercede for the innocent babies and the young women considering abortion. Pray for all in authority – and that men and women of God will be elected at all levels of leadership. Also, pray that any godless officials in public leadership will either have a change of heart or that God will remove them from their positions.

Offer Practical Assistance

“If a brother or sister is without clothing and in need of daily food, and one of you says to them, ‘Go in peace, be warmed and be filled,’ and yet you do not give them what is necessary for their body, what use is that?” (James 2:15-16. NASB)

Just telling a girl not to abort her baby isn’t enough. You need to give her an alternative. Check with your local problem pregnancy center and see what you can do to help. There are always basic things needed such as housing for the girls, finances, maternity and baby clothes, electrical, carpentry, or maintenance work, etc. Volunteer some time to their Hot-Line or do some office work. Donate your services. You may be able to offer valuable assistance through your business or profession – you’d be surprised how many different needs there are!

“I’ve always been concerned about the issue of abortion, but I never got involved. Then I got a copy of your tract. Nothing, but nothing could have prepared me for the picture inside. I cried, l got angry, and I resolved then and there to get involved and help in whatever way I could.

“My husband is supporting me and we’re preparing to take one or two unwed mothers into our home. Thank you! If it wasn’t for you, I may never have gotten involved.”

-Katrine DeFever, Santa Rosa, CA

Inform Other Christians

If your church or fellowship isn’t already involved, approach your pastor about some sort of awareness program. You can use literature, video tapes, slides, or invite speakers in. You’d be amazed how many church kids wind up in abortion clinics, and sometimes it’s their pastor or parents who actually send them there. See if you can give a presentation to your church or Sunday School class. Ask God for the opportunity and He will open the doors.

Every church or fellowship should have homes and people available to help unwed mothers.

Inform the General Public

Ask the Lord for some creative ways to open people’s eyes to the realities of abortion, and the alternatives available. Buy billboard space, run newspaper ads, write articles or “letters to the editor,” give speeches, write songs, inform your school.

“Just a note to thank you for your abortion tracts! When my Health Education professor announced a debate on abortion, a friend gave me the tracts to use. And use them I did! I was the only one able to give names, numbers, dates and stick to them!” -Lisa Silver, Winchester, VA

Distribute Literature

“We were able to distribute approximately 18,000 tracts on abortion in two days, through picket lines at abortion clinics and at road-blocks at major intersections of our city. Our greatest blessing was seeing 20-30 girls change their minds about getting an abortion, some even received the Lord!! -Teresa Everett, Pensacola, FL

You can distribute tracts at clinics, hospitals, doctors’ offices, schools, and libraries. You can even leave them in public restrooms! The idea is to get the word out.

You can blitz your city! You can organize your friends or fellowship to place one or both of our tracts on abortion into every home in your area. We helped distribute the tract “Children – Things We Throw Away?” to almost every home in Tyler, Texas, population 70,000. It was done in one full day with about 250 volunteers. The city was divided into sections and each section leader had group leaders under him. The section leaders provided transportation and patrolled their areas while the tracts were being distributed. The group leaders had a map of the city with their area clearly designated. The streets in each section were divided among those in his group and they went out in two’s. It’s not legal to put tracts in mail boxes, but it’s okay to slip them under a door, affix them to a doorknob, or slide them between the door and a screen door. Since the main purpose is getting information into each home, this doesn’t involve sharing personally with individuals (except as the Lord leads), since this can be quite time consuming. The response to this action has been tremendous and we really feel it is a worthwhile endeavor. Other groups have done this in their cities as well.

Write Letters

Let your representatives in Congress know how you feel. This is something anyone can do and it’s very important. For every letter received inWashington, DC, they figure thousands of people feel the same way. If there’s one thing that most politicians really stand up and notice, it’s votes.

Sidewalk Assistance

“Thank you so much for sending the tracts `Children – Things We Throw Away?’ We’ve been doing street counseling in front of an abortion clinic downtown. In six weeks, 16 girls have changed their minds. We only go on Saturday as that’s the heaviest day at the clinic, but hopefully we’ll be able to free up some more people to go more often.” -Debbie Strahan, Chicago, IL

Sidewalk counseling is talking with the girls as they are going in and out of the abortion clinics. This can be very effective, and we’ve heard many great reports about women changing their minds.

When you’re speaking with a girl, it’s important that you gain her trust. It’s best not to carry signs or wear buttons, etc., since this may scare her away. Don’t walk up and tell her you are “pro-life,” because that could mean to her that you’re only interested in her baby, and not her problem. The only way you’re going to save the child is through the mother. She probably feels frightened, confused, and backed into a corner, and the reason she’s come to the clinic in the first place is because of her problem. She needs to know you care about her, and are there to help her. (And you need to be sure you do love and care about her!) Many women aren’t really sure abortion is the right thing, but most of them don’t know the other options available.

So how do you start? Arm yourself with the love of Jesus and the holiness of the Holy Spirit, and walk up to the girl and start talking with her in a loving, non-condemning way. Ask her if she’s going to the clinic, if she’s just getting a pregnancy test, or is scheduled for an abortion. Remember that most clinics never inform girls about the baby’s development, and she probably thinks her baby is just “a wad of tissue.” You can show her some photos of what her baby looks like in the womb, and let her know the child inside her is just that – a child. Be friendly, and be yourself. Don’t fall into the trap of using a bunch of pat phrases or nice “Christian clichés.” Let her know you understand she’s in a tight spot, but having an abortion will only make things worse.

See if you can get her to put off going to the clinic… maybe ask her to go have a soda or something, so you can discuss her problems. What you need is love, concern, some knowledge of the facts, some good material with you and a “stick in there” attitude. Speak gently, ask questions, and show an interest in her as a whole person. If there’s a local problem pregnancy center in your area, suggestthat she call there, or take her there yourself.

If a girl does go into the clinic, that doesn’t mean it’s all over. Often she’ll go in and read the material, and think over what you’ve said. So when she comes out, ask her what happened, and if she made a decision. Be sure you get her phone number, and contact her the very next day.

See if there’s any sort of help she needs. Offer her specific assistance, because she might not know what to ask for, or might be too embarrassed to ask. You should have a loving home available where a girl, who may have other problems, could stay. Open your home or find someone else to open theirs.

Even if she does have the abortion, she needs to know you still care for her. Some sidewalk counselors will tell the girl that she’ll probably need counseling after her abortion, and ask if they could please be the ones to counsel her. Now more than ever she needs a friend, and she’s in desperate need of the Lord Jesus in her life. Welcome her to your local fellowship, and offer her a ride.

Talk To Your Doctor

See what kind of stand your physician takes on abortion – if he’s in favor of it, ask the Lord to give you the right words to minister truth. Women, ask your gynecologist if he does abortions or refers patients to abortion clinics. Many women quit patronizing those doctors who support abortion if, after talking to them, they’re unwilling to change their views. If you do change doctors, be sure to tell him exactly why you’re doing so. However, don’t forget your attitude of love in this.

If your doctor is against abortion, encourage him to get involved – doctors can have a powerful influence on other physicians and the community in general. He may also be willing to donate some of his services to a pregnant girl, or help out at a pro-life center.

Reach Out To the Abortion Doctors

People are not our enemies. God loves the doctors who perform abortions just as much as He loves the tiny babies they kill. The Scriptures command us that if a man is caught in any trespass, we are to restore him in a spirit of gentleness. (Gal. 6:1) Pray about how you can minister to these men and women. They are hurting, too. Of the thousands of letters we’ve received and hundreds of articles we’ve read, we’ve only heard of one abortion doctor ever getting saved. Now, maybe there have been others, but we haven’t heard of any. Perhaps you can meet with them, take them out to lunch, show them that you care.

Ask God for creative ways to reach out. Pray that the Holy Spirit will continue to work on their hearts and consciences. Remember – murder is not “the unpardonable sin.” Although the doctors, nurses, and clinic staff do bear an incredible weight of responsibility, their involvement with abortions isn’t what will send them to hell – it’s whether or not they yield their hearts to the love of Jesus. Let God use you to show them that love.

Picketing

Picketing is an area where the attitude of the heart is of utmost importance. It can be done in an effective way, or it can be something that is destructive to the cause of Christ. If you feel led in this area, seek the Lord as to exactly what He’d have you do. Remember, we do not fight against flesh and blood, and we cannot overcome the enemy in a spirit of bitterness, arrogance, or self-righteousness

Picketing serves two important purposes 1) It brings the whole issue of abortion to the attention of the public 2) It’s a definite deterrent to abortion doctors – economically, because it cuts down their business, and personally, because most doctors don’t want their other patients to know they perform abortions. We have heard of clinics that were shut down and doctors who stopped doing abortions because of picketing.

Count the cost before you begin. If you start out with brash statements of what you are going to accomplish, but within a week all your volunteers have given up, you may find that you have actually weakened the cause you were working for. (Luke 14:28-30)

You also need to be ready for the opposition you will most likely encounter. Picketing is bad for the abortion clinic’s business, and the owner will probably do all he can to have you stopped. However, as long as you picket legally, and avoid slander or libel, your rights to picket are protected by the First Amendment.

We suggest that you try to make a personal appointment to talk with the doctor before you begin to take action against his clinic. Share your heart with him or her in a loving, humble way. Let him know that you don’t hate him, and aren’t “out to get him.” Explain why you feel abortion is wrong, and why you are willing to take whatever action is necessary to see it stopped.
Basic Picketing Guidelines
  1. Don’t picket alone.
  2. Be sure you understand the laws of your city regarding trespassing and private vs. public property. Never trespass on clinic property, or picket in front of other people’s property. Stay on the sidewalk, and don’t step on the curb.
  3. Don’t block the driveway. Never attempt to physically stop someone from entering a clinic. Never block pedestrians on the sidewalk.
  4. Don’t lay picket signs on clinic property or nearby property. Don’t litter.
  5. Don’t engage in conversation with any heckler or counter-picketer. Under no circumstances touch or threaten to touch any heckler or counter-picketer.
  6. If the police should come by, please be courteous and follow their instructions to the letter.
  7. Be sure to carry some good literature to pass out.
  8. Be thoughtful about what you write on your signs. Think back to before you knew the Lord. How would you have felt if someone walked up and down in front of your house with a sign saying, “Susan is a fornicator” or “John is an adulterer”? It would have let your neighbors know what you were doing, but it probably only would have made you angry – we doubt it would have changed your heart. So before you put your signs together, seek God about what they should say.

If you should run into any legal problems, you can contact The Rutherford Institute, Box 510, Manassis, VA 22110, (703)396-0100. This is a group of attorneys committed to give free legal defense to picketers and others involved in abortion action.

Get Into the Schools

“I’m an eighth grade student, and in science class we read a pamphlet called `Children-Things We Throw Away?’ As we read about the five commonly used techniques I started to cry and didn’t stop until we left for another class. One boy laughed at me, and kept laughing all through the period. Every time I see a picture of an aborted baby I cry. To just think that the babies have no defense to fight against it.
“Tell me, what I can do to help because I can’t stand it any more. There should be a law against abortion and make the abortion clinics illegal. All my friends are behind me and we’ll do what we can.” -Rosemarie Trausch, Parma, OH

One of our staff members recently had an opportunity to talk about abortion in a local high school health class. To her amazement, there was almost no understanding among the students as to what an abortion really involved, what an unborn child was like, or how many abortions are performed each year. These young people are the potential abortion customers of tomorrow – and many of them are current customers today! Much of our efforts need to be directed towards educating them about the realities of abortion.

In order to be able to speak or bring a presentation to a class or a whole assembly, try to have a Christian teacher or student bring you onto campus. One ministry we know of has different students approach their health teachers and ask if they can bring someone in to talk about abortion. Many times you can get directly into class that way, avoiding a bunch of red tape. You will have a much better chance of getting into the schools through students or teachers than if you just come on your own from the outside.

Take along some good literature to pass out to the students and teachers, so that they have something to take home with them. Ask the kids questions, and get them involved in the discussion. Let them know the alternatives to abortion. Be sure to leave your name and address, or the name of your local problem pregnancy center.

Start A Problem Pregnancy Center – You Don’t Need To Be A Doctor!!

If you don’t know of a local problem pregnancy center, we encourage you to consider starting one! Believe it or not, it isn’t a difficult thing to organize. There are many young women who find themselves in a situation where they don’t know if they’re pregnant or not. Right now the majority of free pregnancy tests are offered at abortion clinics. This is because once the girls are in there, it’s not hard to convince them to pay for an abortion. The abortion clinics make it sound as if it’s just an easy thing – no more difficult than having a tooth pulled. But we know that many of these young women are scarred for life, both physically and emotionally, after having an abortion.

A Christian-based problem pregnancy center can offer free early pregnancy tests, and then have wonderful opportunities to talk with the girls. Tests can be purchased for about 60 cents or less each, and a center can be started in a couple of rooms in an office building or in a home where there is a private entrance. Advertising is done in local papers, phone books, etc., but without stating the “pro-life” thrust of the center. The girl who is coming for her free test can be reached with an alternative to abortion if she finds the test is positive.

“Living Alternatives” is one ministry that approaches this whole area from an entirely Christian perspective. They are working in several cities around the country, and their strategy includes problem pregnancy centers, homes for unwed mothers, and education programs for both the Christian and secular community. The strength of their work is that they seek to minister to each individual as a whole person, and their primary focus is on winning them with the loving kindness of Jesus. If you are interested in beginning a problem pregnancy center or an unwed mothers’ home, we highly recommend that you contact them. They are in the process of compiling an extensive manual on the “how to’s” of crisis centers. They also run training schools specifically for anyone wanting to get involved in this area. (On some occasions, they’ve even flown out to a city to help a group get started.) For more information you can write directly to them: Living Alternatives, Box 4600, Tyler, TX 75712, (903) 581-2891.

Voting – A Christian Responsibility

by Melody Green

“All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” -Edmond Burke

I’ve been a Christian for several years now, yet I still come across attitudes or ways of thinking that need a renewing touch from God. Voting was one of those areas. My thoughts on voting have always been apathetic at best, and becoming a Christian didn’t make them any better. In the not-so-distant past I’ve thought things like, “Well, I’ll just trust the Lord to put His people into office. What difference will only one vote make anyway?” I see now that thoughts like this are not only apathetic… they are dangerous.

Jesus told us we are to be the salt (preservative) of the earth. Have we become content to just sit in our comfortable little “shakers” instead of flowing freely to influence society around us? We need to be involved. Not only for the sake of the Lord, but for the sake of our nation as well. “The good influence of godly citizens causes a city to prosper.” (Proverbs 11:11)

Voting is a privilege that is taken very lightly by many people in this nation. If you think that the decisions in this country are being made by the majority of the people, you’re wrong. The decisions are made by the majority of the people who TAKE THE TIME TO VOTE!
I believe God wants all of us to take part in the continual shaping of this country. As citizens, our failure to vote cancels out our voice, and therefore, our choice. To give up our freedom to have a godly influence is a grave mistake. One day we may wake up to find that many freedoms we’ve taken for granted are gone… and that is not an irrational or unfounded statement.

The issues facing our nation today are the most crucial in history since slavery: abortion, homosexual rights, family and parental rights, pornography, and Christian educational freedom, to name a few. Watch the news, read the newspapers and magazines, and above all, pray. Find out all you can about the issues and how everyone involved feels about them. Ask God for wisdom. “Find some capable, godly, honest men who hate bribes, and… let these men be responsible to serve the people with justice at all times.” (Exodus 18:21-22)

Register And Vote!!

If you aren’t registered, do so. Encourage your Christian friends to register and challenge them to fulfill their voting responsibility. It’s possible in many areas to obtain mail-in voter registration cards. You can pass these out at church, school, or work. Then get out there and VOTE! Many people register with good intentions, but never make it to the polls. This nation was first declared to be “One nation under God.” Let’s do all that we can to see that it is. “For the wicked shall not rule the godly, lest the godly be forced to do wrong.(Psalm 125:3)

Dear Mr. President,

I know that you receive 20,000 letters a day and that you actually read 10 of them every day. I really do respect you for trying to get a pulse on what is going on out here. I know that you don’t agree with my pro-life views but I wanted to challenge you as a fellow Christian to re-examine your pro-choice view.

Many in the world today are taking a long look at the abortion industry because of the May 14, 2013 guilty verdict and life term penalty handed down by a jury (which included 9 out of 12 pro-choice jurors)  to Dr. Kermit Gosnell. During this time of reflection I wanted to put forth some of the pro-life’s best arguments.

In the film series “WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE HUMAN RACE?” the arguments are presented  against abortion (Episode 1),  infanticide (Episode 2),   euthanasia (Episode 3), and then there is a discussion of the Christian versus Humanist worldview concerning the issue of “the basis for human dignity” in Episode 4 and then in the last episode a close look at the truth claims of the Bible.

I truly believe that many of the problems we have today in the USA are due to the advancement of humanism in the last few decades in our society. Ronald Reagan appointed the evangelical Dr. C. Everett Koop to the position of Surgeon General in his administration. He partnered with Dr. Francis Schaeffer in making the video below. It is very valuable information for Christians to have.  Actually I have included a video below that includes comments from him on this subject.

Tony Perkins: Gosnell Trial – FOX News

Per Tweet News, Kermit Gosnell Found Guilty

….. of murdering 3 live born Babies, and of involuntary manslaughter of one Mom, Karnamaya Mongar.

Fast payday loans For Every One

None of the media outlets can agree on how many charges Gosnell faced, with the numbers ranging from the 230′s to above 260, but the huge burden is the likely reason that the jury took so long in deliberating the many verdicts.

This hugely significant trial is most notable for having been ignored by the media, most of which only began covering the issue when forced to by its repetition in the social media.

The practices by Gosnell are not so notable, as many abortion clinics exhibit deplorable standards of practice and unsanitary conditions.  Also, the practice of infanticide is widespread at late term abortion clinics, in which babies who are born alive are killed by neglect, suffocation or other methods.

Thank you so much for your time. I know how valuable it is. I also appreciate the fine family that you have and your commitment as a father and a husband. I also respect you for putting your faith in Christ for your eternal life. I am pleading to you on the basis of the Bible to please review your religious views concerning abortion. It was the Bible that caused the abolition movement of the 1800’s and it also was the basis for Martin Luther King’s movement for civil rights and it also is the basis for recognizing the unborn children.

CHILDREN THINGS WE THROW AWAY? By Melody Green

“Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?”  Micah 6:7

Abortion has become the most common surgical procedure in America.* Over 99% of all U.S. abortions have nothing to do with the life or health of the woman—they are done simply because of her desire for convenience, absence of distress, and her so-called happiness. 1 Doctors perform over 1.3 million abortions per year in the United States alone… that’s one for every two live births. 2 Abortion has become so frequent, that population experts say that it has become, in effect, a new form of birth control. But abortion should not be confused with birth control, which prevents a new life from beginning—abortion destroys that new life once it has already begun. Of the women having them, 66% are unmarried, 20% are teenagers,3 and 47% are “repeat” customers.**4

Abortion…An Easy Alternative?

In this age of convenience, abortion is being presented as a “quick and easy” way to get rid of an annoying problem. When women seek advice, most professional abortion counselors just don’t tell them the truth concerning what they are about to do to their child and to themselves. First of all, abortion is a major surgical procedure which can result in serious complications—it is not as “safe” as we are led to believe. Statistics show that after a legal abortion, a woman faces increased possibilities of future miscarriages, tubal pregnancies, premature births, sterility, and severe and long-lasting emotional disturbances.

I have personally received many letters from women who must face the fact that they will never be able to have children due to infections and complications from a supposedly safe abortion they have had in the past. Instead of being told this, their fears are made to seem silly—the whole procedure is whitewashed. “Why, it’s so simple, ” they say, “like removing an unsightly wart from your body. Now you’re pregnant . . .now you’re not! Just rest a day and you’ll feel fine!”

When Does Life Begin?

Just when does an unborn baby become a “real person”? Science tells us that when the 23 chromosomes of the sperm unite with the ovum’s 23 chromosomes, a new 46 chromosome cell is formed. When this process (fertilization) is complete, a new human being exists. This cell is a complete genetic package programmed for development into a mature adult. Nothing will be added except time and nutrition. It’s been medically proven that the baby’s heart starts beating from 14-28 days after conception (usually before the mother even knows she’s pregnant), and by the 30th day almost every organ has started to form! He moves his arms and legs by six weeks and by 43 days his brain waves can be read. By eight weeks the baby has his very own fingerprints, he can urinate, make a strong fist, and he can feel pain. Each stage of development from fertilization to old age is merely a maturing of what is entirely there at the start.

Abortion Techniques

The following are the most commonly known abortion techniques:

Dilation and Curettage (D & C)

The cervix is dilated with a series of instruments to allow the insertion of a curette, or sharp scraping instrument, into the uterus. The developing child is then cut into pieces and scraped from the uterine wall. Bleeding is usually profuse. A nurse must then reassemble the parts to make sure the uterus is empty, otherwise infection will set in.

Suction Curettage (Vacuum Aspiration)

The cervix is dilated as in a D & C, then a tube is inserted into the uterus and connected to a strong suction apparatus. The vacuum is so powerful that the baby is torn to bits and sucked into a jar.

Dilation and Evacuation (D & E)

At 12 to 20 weeks, a seaweed-based substance is inserted into the cervix causing dilation. The next day forceps with sharp metal teeth are inserted and parts of the baby’s body are torn away and removed piece by piece. At this age the head is usually too large to be removed whole, and must be crushed and drained before taken out. D & Es are promoted by abortion advocates because, unlike other second trimester methods, they insure the baby’s death.

Partial Birth Abortion

Performed  20 weeks and later, this procedure involves the breech delivery of the child.  When all but the head is delivered, “the surgeon then forces the scissors into the base of the skull.  Having safely entered the skull, he spreads the scissors to enlarge the opening. The surgeon removes the scissors and introduces a suction catheter into this hole and evacuates the skull contents.”***

Saline Injection

Used after 16 weeks (four months) when enough fluid has accumulated. A long needle is inserted through the mother’s abdomen into the baby’s sac. Some fluid is removed and a strong salt solution is injected. The helpless baby swallows this poison and suffers severely. He kicks and jerks violently as he is literally being burned alive. It takes over an hour for the baby to die—his outer layer of skin is completely burned off. Within 24 hours, labor will usually set in and the mother will give birth to a dead baby. (Quite frequently these babies are born alive. They are usually left unattended to die. However, a few who have survived the ordeal—due to the mercy of the hospital staff—have later been adopted.)

Hysterotomy or Caesarean

Used mainly in the last three months of pregnancy, the womb is entered by surgery through the wall of the abdomen. The tiny baby is removed and allowed to die by neglect or sometimes killed by a direct act.

Prostaglandin Chemical

This form of abortion uses chemicals developed by the Upjohn Pharmaceutical Co. which cause the uterus to contract intensely, pushing out the developing baby. The contractions are so abnormally severe that babies have even been decapitated. Many, however, have also been born alive. The side effects to the mother are many—a number have even died from cardiac arrest when the compounds were injected.

Hypocritic Oath?

“I will give no deadly medicine to anyone if asked, nor suggest such counsel, and in like manner, I will not give to a woman a pessary to produce abortion.”

This statement is part of the Hippocratic Oath which doctors have taken for centuries as a moral standard governing their work as physicians. In recent years, it has been changed to read, “I will do nothing that is illegal.” (This new oath would have been appropriate in Nazi Germany, where the doctors who helped to kill Jews were well within the limits of the law.)

Dr. John Szenens, age 36, has this to say: “You have to become a bit schizophrenic. In one room you encourage the patient that the slight irregularity of the fetal heart is not important—that she is going to have a fine, healthy baby. Then in the next room you assure another woman, on whom you just did a saline abortion, that it’s good that the heart is already irregular . . .she has nothing to worry about, she is not going to have a live baby.” Dr. Szenens continues, “At the beginning we were doing abortions on smaller fetuses… and the kicking and heartbeat did not manifest itself as much. I think if I had started with 24-weekers right off the bat, I would have had a much greater conflict in my own mind if this was the same as murder or not. But since we started off slowly with 15-16 weekers, the fetus just never got consideration. Then gradually, the whole range of cases started to become larger. All of a sudden, one noticed that at the time of the saline infusion, there was a lot of activity in the uterus.

It wasn’t fluid currents. It was obviously the fetus being distressed by swallowing the salt solution and kicking violently through the death trauma. You can either face it, or turn around and say it’s uterine contractions. That, however, would be repressing, since as a doctor you obviously know that it is not. Now whether you admit this to the patient is another matter. Her distress by unwanted pregnancy is to me the primary consideration, ahead of any possible consideration for the fetus. We just have to face it. Somebody has to do it. And unfortunately, we are the executioners in this instance.”8

Susan Lindstrom, M.S.W., age 27, puts it this way: “I am having a lot of difficulty with my feelings about late abortions—and all the pain that’s there so much of the time after the baby is moving. So one day, in a need to arrive at a measure of clarity, I went into the room where they keep the fetuses before burning them. They were next to the garbage cans in paper buckets, like the take-home chicken kind. I looked inside the bucket in front of me. There was a small naked person in there, floating in a bloody liquid.

He was purple with bruises and his face had the agonized tautness of one forced to die too soon. I then took off the lids of all the buckets and with a pair of forceps lifted each fetus out by an arm or a leg—leaving, as I returned them, an additional bruise on their acid-soaked bodies. Finally, I lifted out a very large fetus and read the label—Mother’s name:  C. Atkins; Doctor’s name: Saul Marcus; Sex of the item: Male; Time of gestation: 24 weeks (six months). I remembered Miss Atkins. She was 17—a very pretty blond girl. So, this was Master Atkins—to be burned tomorrow—for the sake of his mother.”9

A Hardening Of The Heart

Then there’s the unnamed doctor who shared on a radio show that after he performed his first abortion, he became so violently ill that he thought he would die. He went through weeks of depression and thought of suicide. He said, “The first time I felt like a murderer, but I did it again and again and again, and now, 20 years later, I am facing what happened to me as a doctor and as a human being. Sure, I got hard. Sure, the money was important. And oh, it was an easy thing, once I had taken this step—to see these women as animals and these babies as just tissue.”10

It’s important to note that all three of these people, in spite of how distressed they were with what they were doing, did not stop. Why? The Bible explains it as a searing of the conscience —a hardening of the heart. It happens when you repeatedly refuse to listen to that small voice inside that keeps telling you “something isn’t right.” If you keep rationalizing and turning it off, one day you’ll wake up and guess what . . . it’s gone! Your first reaction may be to breathe a sigh of relief, but you should instead weep bitter tears of sorrow, because a part of your conscience, a part of your communication with God, has just died —and It may never come back again!

What Does God Have To Say?

God makes it clear that these tiny packages of humanity are fully human. “Now the word of the Lord came to me saying, ‘Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I have appointed you a prophet to the nations.'” (Jer. 1:4-5)

God knew Jeremiah when he was in his mother’s belly; God sanctified him and ordained him to be a prophet. If by an abortion, the baby should have been killed, it would have been Jeremiah who was killed. Jeremiah’s mother would not have known his name, but God had already named him. His mother would not have known he was potentially a mighty prophet of God, but God had so planned it, and would have felt the loss.

The Bible tells us that John the Baptist was: “filled with the Holy Spirit, while yet in his mother’s womb.” (Luke 1:15 ) God sent His angel to Zacharias to tell him that his wife would bear a son, and even told him what his name was to be. He was told that “. . .many will rejoice at his birth—for he will be great in the sight of the Lord.” (Luke 1:11-17 )

It seems like God knew John quite well and that He had a distinct purpose for his life on earth… a purpose for him and him alone to fulfill.

Last but certainly not least, the angel Gabriel announced to Mary,

“Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name Him Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High… and His Kingdom will have no end.” (Luke 1:31-33)

And so you see, God doesn’t wait until a baby moves or becomes completely ready for life outside his mother, before He knows him, loves him, and recognizes him as a tiny human being… so why should we?

Let’s Count The Cost

So where do we go from here? Nazi Germany enacted a law permitting the extermination of “useless” members of society. Now we have the same pattern emerging in which a whole category of people, unloved and unborn, are being senselessly slaughtered. What is the next class of humanity to be destroyed? Will it be the aged, the handicapped, the mentally retarded?

God defends the unborn, the innocent, the one who cannot speak for himself… that tiny individual who will never again be duplicated in all of human history!

Only God has the right to bring the innocent home to Himself. (Deut. 32:39) Only He has the right to open or close wombs. But man has taken matters into his own hands. Mothers with their selfish excuses and doctors with their sharp instruments are playing God!

I caution them to think twice because God is not pleased. In fact, He is grieved to the depths of His heart by the mutilation of these beloved children! He says in His word, “Do not kill the innocent… for I will not acquit the guilty.” (Exodus 23:7) We cannot break God’s laws without suffering the consequences! We deceive ourselves if we think He does not see.

“The eyes of the Lord are in every place, beholding the evil and the good.” (Proverbs 15:3)

The Myth Of The “Unwanted Child”

One of the most frequently heard excuses of the “pro-choice” groups is, “It would be unfair to bring another ‘unwanted child’ into the world.” Actually, there is no such thing. Once a baby is born it will never be unwanted because of the extreme shortage of newborn babies available for adoption. It is obviously not the child’s happiness and well-being that is of utmost concern here. . .but that of the parents.

If you are about to make the fatal mistake of ending a life given as a gift of God (Psalm 127:3), then I beg you to reconsider. Please don’t do something that you will regret for the rest of your life. Don’t destroy something that isn’t yours. That baby belongs to God, even though it may be in your womb. If you do not feel equipped to raise a baby at this time, I urge you to take another look at the situation… maybe there is a way… pray about it. If you still feel that this is an impossibility—then BE A GIVER, NOT A TAKER.

The Gift Of Life

There are many families who have been waiting and desperately praying for years for the chance to adopt a child. Your child may be the answer to their prayers! Adoption is a reasonable and caring thing to do if you don’t feel you can keep your baby. If you are unable to raise your child yourself, then you have the chance to give the greatest possible gift of all—the gift of life! In fact, you can give it twice… once to your baby and then, if you decide, again to a hopeful family somewhere. You can be a life-giver, or you can commit a crime that will remain on your conscience for the rest of your life! ABORTION IS MURDER—and no matter what anyone tells you, you will not “just forget about it”

You may feel cornered… like things are hopeless, and I want you to know that I am in no way insensitive to your situation or think that your problems are trivial. I simply say that abortion is not the answer. God commands us not to murder (Exodus 20:13), and going against Him will only make matters much worse. Everyone you know may be telling you you’d be a fool to have this baby—but they don’t have to live with the guilt and pain of murder… you do. That baby is half yours no matter who the father is. The choice is yours. But don’t forget, you are responsible to God for your actions—and after reading this, you certainly are not ignorant of the facts. You will be held accountable for your decision… I earnestly pray that you make the right one. Even though I don’t know you, Jesus does, and we both love you (and your baby) very, very much!

The Crime Of Being Alive

Abortion, Euthanasia, & Infanticide

Crime of Being AliveWe’d probably like to think that the photograph on the next page is from another time, another place. Nazi Germany, perhaps. However, this photo and the story surrounding it is only one graphic example of just how far the devaluation of human life has gone. Perhaps we ourselves have been numbed to what is happening in our own time.

As you will see, infanticide, or the killing of infants, is a practice that reaches far beyond the womb, while euthanasia is a type of killing that may include young and old alike.

We will start with the broader view first, euthanasia, and look at some of its beginnings. We think you will be shocked to find that the mentality that justifies these acts is not much different than the mentality that brought about another, not so distant, tragedy.

As we take a look at euthanasia and infanticide, we must remember that the loss of respect for human life through abortion only serves to fuel and accelerate these deadly practices.

What Is Euthanasia?

Euthanasia: To purposely speed up or causedeath when it’s “in the best interest” of the patient. It’s done with or without the patient’s consent, by a lethal injection, suffocation, or by not giving the basic and ordinary treatment that would routinely be offered. It also includes withholding food and water to “allow” a patient to die. Some harmless and even noble sounding terms commonly used are “right to die” and “mercy killing.”

Euthanasia should not be confused with the term “death with dignity,” which means allowing a terminally ill patient to die naturally, without using extreme measures to draw out the death process into a long and painful ordeal. Dr. Paul Marx states it “is not euthanasia at all. It usually refers to removing supportive equipment or drug treatment when a patient has irrevocably entered the process of dying.”1

Baby in Wichita, Kansas, 1983
Wichita, Kansas, 1983: This baby was found along with several aborted babies, waiting to be burned at a city incinerator used by the Humane Society to dispose of dead dogs and cats. This largest baby appeared to be full term and weighed around six pounds. Dr. John Willke stated, “My judgment is that this was a salt poison abortion. I have no idea why they opened the body. In a legitimate autopsy the body is closed and sewn back up.”3
L.I.F.E., Inc.

We sometimes put our dogs and cats “to sleep” when the cost of treating them outweighs their value to us, but can we measure human life on the same scale? Unfortunately, it is being done. Euthanasia is sometimes practiced in nursing homes and mental hospitals, where the sick and aged lie unwanted and unvisited by their families. They have no defense against this deceptive mentality of death.

The Mistake Of Others

History tells us about another government that legalized euthanasia: Germany, before the Nazi rule! We usually picture Hitler rising to power and then embarking on a horrendous campaign of murder. Most of our history books leave out the fact that the selective death of “undesirables” had begun years before Hitler took office!

In the early 1920s the renowned psychiatrist, Dr. Alfred Hoche, and the respected judge, Karl Binding, wrote The Release of the Destruction Of Life Devoid of Value. In their book they stated that those who were dying or were physically or mentally handicapped should be given the “mercy” of a painless death. They also pointed out the economic benefits of such a program.

“It was respected psychiatrists and pediatricians – not Nazi thugs – who killed 75% of the chronically ill in Germany. It began by killing German, non-Jewish persons suffering serious defects. In time, the reasons for killing became slighter – for example, `poorly formed ears,’ bed wetters, and `difficult to educate.’ An estimated 275,000 persons who had been in nursing homes, hospitals, and asylums were killed.”2

Germany’s euthanasia movement also had its comforting phrases such as help for the dying andmercy deaths. “Realm’s Committee for Scientific Approach to Severe Illness Due to Heredity and Constitution” was the harmless sounding name of an organization set up specifically for the killing of children.

From Small Beginnings

When Hitler came to power, he simply built on the foundation conveniently laid by German doctors and readily accepted by society in general. German schools taught that in nature the sick die and the healthy survive – therefore, helping the handicapped went against nature. The “grandfather” of their philosophy of natural selection was the same Charles Darwin who is honored in our education system today. If man evolved, then he is a mere animal. His value is determined strictly by what he can offer society. If man is created in the image and likeness of God, his value is determined by his Creator.

Dr. Leo Alexander, who worked with the Chief Counsel for War Crimes at the Nuremberg Trials, observed, “Whatever proportion these crimes finally assumed, it became evident that they had started from small beginnings. The beginnings at first were merely a subtle shift in emphasis in the basic attitudes of the physicians. It started with the acceptance of the attitude, basic in the euthanasia movement, that there is such a thing as life not worthy to be lived.”4

C. Everett Koop, MD, Surgeon General of the United States, warns us about what lies ahead. “One could say without hesitation that we are at the crossroads of the corruption of medicine with the corruption of law. Corruption of law came first in this country with the US Supreme Court abortion decision of 1973. The corruption of medicine followed. In Germany in the 1930s the corruption of medicine came first. But the Holocaust could not have come about with the corruption of medicine alone. It took the corruption of law to make euthanasia legal. There is no doubt that if the doctors in Germany had stood for the right to life of every individual, the Holocaust at the very least would have been slowed down and minimized.”5

The Link Between Abortion And Euthanasia

Only “viable” human beings who have the “capability of meaningful life” may, but need not, be protected by the state. – US Supreme court, January 22, 1973

The Supreme Court’s ruling on abortion has not only devalued human life, but it has set in motion a mentality of death that reaches far beyond the womb. Francis Schaeffer wondered, “Will a society which has assumed the right to kill infants in the womb – because they are unwanted, imperfect, or merely inconvenient – have difficulty in assuming the right to kill other human beings, especially older adults who are judged unwanted, deemed imperfect physically or mentally, or considered a possible social nuisance?”6

Abortion practices are being used to justify euthanasia. In the Atlantic Monthly it was argued that if the life of a Down’s Syndrome baby can be “ended prenatal, why should it not be ended neonatally [just after birth]? The only difference between the fetus and the infant is that the infant breathes with its lungs.”7 Like it or not, this line of logic is correct. If we can kill babies before they are born, why not after?

Another shocking statement comes from a Nobel Prize winner: “If a child were not declared alive until three days after birth, then all parents could be allowed the choice that only a few are given under the present system. The doctor could allow the child to die if the parents so chose, and save a lot of misery and suffering. I believe this is the only rational and compassionate attitude to have.”8

Malcolm Muggeridge, the distinguished British journalist, critic, and lecturer, reflects on the subtle change of values in Germany that led to the slaughter of millions. “It all began in the decadent years of post WWI Germany. All the most horrible and disgusting aspects of the last decades of the 20th century – the pornography, the sadism, the violence, the moral and spiritual vacuum – were already in evidence there. Can this sort of thing happen in countries like Canada and England and the United States? In my opinion, yes. In fact, it is already happening. It should never be forgotten that it was the euthanasia program first organized by the medical profession which led to and merged with the genocide program.”9 As he views our current euthanasia practices, Muggeridge wonders if some future historian will say of us, “It took no more than three decades to transform a war crime into an act of compassion.”

If this was a regular C-section, the cord would be tied and cut, that baby tended to, and taken to the nursery. This however was marked ‘Abortion,’ the baby cut free and left to die.

We tend to believe that the Nazi genocide of WWII could never happen again. But if we take a careful look, the very same foundations are again being laid, and accepted, that allowed such a tragedy. We must learn from the mistakes of others, lest we make the same ones. History can repeat itself. In fact, the wheels have already been set in motion.

What Is Infanticide?

Infanticide: The murder of infants. Already an alarmingly common practice in the United States, infanticide is probably the most common and accepted form of euthanasia. Abortion itself is obviously a form of infanticide – however, late-term abortions (second and third trimester) sometimes present what has been called “the dreaded complication.”

During a late-term abortion, sometimes a baby that’s supposed to be born dead is born alive. There are no laws protecting these infants. We may not hear much about this, but it’s not as rare as we tend to think. It is estimated that 400-500 live abortion births occur each year, although only about 1% are reported.10 A report is not legally required, and what doctor would want to volunteer such information? Dr. Willard Cates, chief of abortion surveillance for the Center For Disease Control in Atlanta, says, “It’s like turning yourself into the IRS for an audit. What is there to gain?”

Baby Alive!

A woman’s scream broke the late-night quiet and brought two young obstetrical nurses rushing to her room. Something had gone wrong. There on the bed, instead of the dead aborted baby they expected, was a live 2½-pound baby boy, crying and moving his arms and legs. One of the nurses gathered up the squirming infant and dashed down the corridor. She didn’t take the baby to an intensive care nursery, but instead deposited him on a drain board in a dirty utility room. Finally, a head nurse phoned the physician at home. “He told me to leave it where it was,” she testified later, “that it would probably die in a few minutes.” This little boy did die – 2½ hours after he was discarded in the closet. This happened in the United States in 1979 – and is not an isolated incident. Another baby, a little girl, was rescued by nurses who found her lying in a bedpan. She is 5 years old now and doing well.

It’s no longer a miracle for an infant of 24 weeks’ development, who could be legally aborted anywhere in the United States, to be saved if born prematurely. “It is frightening,” said Dr. Roger K. Freeman, medical director of Women’s Hospital at the Long Beach Memorial Medical Center in California. “Medicine is now able to give the premature a chance that may be rejected by the mother.”11

Medical trends indicate that these live births will become more frequent since the demand for late-term abortions is growing. Saline and prostaglandin abortions sometimes deliver live babies, but a C-section abortion (hysterotomy) has the highest incidence of all of abortion live births. One obstetrician said that in a hysterotomy, “as the infant is lifted from the womb, he is only sleeping, like his mother. She is under anesthesia, and so is he. You want to know how they kill him? They put a towel over his face so he can’t breathe. And by the time they get him to the lab, he is dead.”12

Twenty states have no laws limiting late abortions or directing compulsory care for live-born abortion babies.

Emotional Scars

Although abortion live births usually escape public notice, they create deeply troubling emotions for the medical personnel involved – doctors and nurses alike. Nursing staffs have led a number of quiet revolts, and two major hospitals in the Fort Lauderdale area, for instance, stopped offering abortions in the late 1970s after protests from the nurses. Similarly, a Grand Rapids hospital was forced to stop late-term abortions in 1977 after nurses there made good on their threat not to handle the dead babies. One night they left a dead baby in its mother’s bed for an hour and a half, despite angry and threatening calls from the attending physician, who finally had to go in and remove it himself. In general, it has been difficult to find obstetrical nurses willing to assist.

Prostaglandin Abortion

Prostaglandin Abortion

“A prostaglandin abortion was filmed for use as an instructional film. The film showed a three-pound baby, born alive, moving and gasping.”

Several studies have documented the distress caused to many nurses. Dr. Warren M. Hem, Chief Physician, and Billie Corrigan, Head Nurse of the Boulder Abortion Clinic, presented a paper to a 1978 Planned Parenthood convention entitled “What About Us? Staff Reactions …” “Eight out of the 15 staff members surveyed reported emotional problems. Two said they worried about the physician’s psychological well-being. Two reported horrifying dreams involving fetuses, one of which involved the hiding of fetal parts so that other people would not see them.” Hern and Corrigan concluded, “We have produced an unusual dilemma. A procedure is becoming recognized as the procedure of choice in late abortion, but those capable of performing or assisting with it are having strong personal reservations about participating in an operation which they view as destructive and violent.”

Dr. Julius Butler, a professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Minnesota Medical School, said, “Remember, there is a human being at the other end of the table taking that kid apart. We’ve had guys drinking too much, taking drugs, even a suicide or two.” Dr. William Benbow Thompson of the University of California at Irvine said, “Arms, legs, chests come out in the forceps. It’s not a sight for everybody.”

What do you do when your insides reject carrying out the things that your philosophy demands? One survivor of a Nazi concentration camp says of his guard: “More than once during executions I heard him mutter, `Orders are orders.’ It was as though he wanted to dismiss any last scruples or give himself courage. His training in the SS had turned him into an uncritical and willing tool… he never batted an eyelid when it came to shooting men, women, and children one after the other. Alcohol played an important part in his life.”13

The Dreaded Complication – Case Histories

By ignoring the problem of abortion live births, the courts and the medical establishment are choosing to overlook a long, well-documented history of cases.

1969, Scotland: A custodian heard a cry from a paper bag in the snow beside an incinerator. Inside, he found a live aborted baby. It was taken in and cared for but died nine hours later. The baby was close to eight months old. No one checked for signs of life before it was discarded. No charges were filed. This case was a matter of record before abortion was legalized in this country.

1973, Bakersfield, CA: A 4½-pound infant was born alive following a saline abortion. Informed by phone, the doctor ordered two nurses to stop giving oxygen to the baby. His instructions were overridden by another physician. The baby survived and was later adopted. The first doctor was indicted for solicitation to commit murder. The case was dismissed.

Saline Abortion

Said of a live baby girl after a saline abortion:
“She was beautiful. She was pink. There were no physical deformities. She lay in a basin put there to catch all the stuff. She was waving her arms and legs. You could tell she was making a big effort to live.”
Hayes Publishing Co.
Saline abortions are performed by injecting poisonous concentrated salt solution into the baby’s bag of water. The baby breathes and swallows this fluid resulting in slow poisoning.

1974, Pittsburgh, PA: A prostaglandin abortion was filmed for use as an instructional film. The film showed a three-pound baby, born alive, moving and gasping. Also, a nurse and medical student testified that they had noticed signs of life. The doctor testified that the infant sustained fatal damage during delivery. No charges were filed.

1975, Boston, MA: A doctor was convicted of manslaughter for neglecting to give care to a 24-week infant after a 1973 abortion. Witnesses said he held the infant down and smothered it. He was the first American doctor ever convicted on charges of failing to care for an infant born during an abortion. The conviction was overturned by the Massachusetts Supreme Court on the ground that improper instructions had been given to the jury.

1977, Westminster, CA: A seven-month baby girl was born alive after a saline abortion. A nurse testified that when the doctor got to the hospital, he stopped her efforts to help the baby’s breathing. A fellow physician testified that he had seen the doctor choke the infant, “I saw him put his hand on this baby’s neck and push down. He said. `I can’t find the trachea!’ and `This baby won’t stop breathing!’” The charges against the doctor were dismissed.

1978, Cleveland, OH: A young woman entered a hospital for an abortion. The baby was born alive and after several weeks of intensive care, the child went home – with its mother! A source familiar with the case remembered one detail: “The doctors had a very hard time making her realize she had a child. She kept saying, `But I had an abortion.’”

1979, Florida: A nursing supervisor told of a live birth where the infant was dumped in a bedpan without examination, as was standard practice. “It didn’t die,” the nurse said. “It was left in the bedpan for an hour before signs of life were noticed. It weighed slightly over a pound.” Excellent care enabled the baby to survive. The child, now 5 years old, has been adopted.

1979, Wilmington, DE: Two babies were born alive, five weeks apart, after saline abortions in a medical center. One was discovered by a nurse, struggling for breath after having been placed in a plastic specimen jar. The second was immediately judged to be a live delivery and was given quick treatment. They both survived and were later adopted.

1979, Los Angeles, CA: What seemed to be a stillborn infant of 23 weeks was delivered from an abortion. Half an hour later the baby made gasping attempts to breathe, but no efforts were made to resuscitate it. The baby was taken to a small utility room that was used as an infant morgue. When told of the continued gasping, the doctor instructed a nurse, “Leave the baby there-it will die.” Twelve hours later, according to the testimony of the nurse, she returned to work and found the infant still in the closet, still gasping. The doctor then reluctantly agreed to have the baby boy transferred to an intensive care unit, where he died four days later. A coroner’s jury ruled the death “accidental” rather than natural, but found nothing in the doctor’s conduct to warrant criminal action.

Two Nurses speak Out

Nurses are usually the ones who bear the burden of handling the well-developed babies of late abortions. The following two nurses both spoke of being deeply troubled by what they have seen of late abortions in American hospitals.

Norma was present in 1980, when a live baby girl was delivered after a saline abortion. The baby appeared healthy at birth. “She was beautiful,” Norma said. “She was pink. There were no physical deformities. She lay in a basin put there to catch all the stuff. She was waving her arms and legs. You could tell she was making a big effort to live.”

Acting on their own, the nurses took her to the intensive care nursery and had the 1-pound-14-ounce baby transferred six hours later to the Loma Linda University Medical Center. Four days later the baby was reported stable with no apparent effects from the saline. However, she later developed a complication and died 11 days after birth.

Linda, while hurrying out of a patient’s room one day to dispose of the aborted “tissue,” felt movement. Startled, she looked straight into the eyes of a live baby. “It looked right at me,” she recalled. She rushed the 1½-pound infant into the nursing station and called the doctor. “It was pink and it had a heartbeat. But the doctor told me the baby was not viable and to send it to the lab.” She did not follow the order, but had no means to help the tiny baby. The nursing supervisor refused to let her put the baby in the nursery where there was proper equipment to assist premature babies in distress. Two hours later the infant died, still at the nursing station, still without medical treatment. It died in a makeshift crib with one hot-water bottle for `warmth and an open tube of oxygen blowing near its head.

This happened in 1973, but Linda is still upset. “I stood by and watched that baby die without doing a thing,” she said. “I have guilt to this day. I feel the baby might have lived had it been properly cared for.”

Two Infanticides Not Involving Abortion

So far, we have been speaking about babies who were aborted. Not wanted. But what about wanted babies who become unwanted immediately after they’re born?

1971: At Johns Hopkins Hospital, a baby was born with an intestinal blockage that meant he could not be nourished. When his parents learned that he also had Down’s Syndrome, they refused to permit the relatively minor operation that would have corrected the internal condition. So the baby was wheeled into an out of-the-way corner, where he died of starvation and dehydration 15 days later.14

1982: In Bloomington, Indiana, a baby was born with Down’s Syndrome. “Infant Doe,” as he came to be called in the courts, needed simple surgery to enable him to eat. However, the parents refused the surgery – and went further by refusing to yield custody of the child to any of the couples who were eager to adopt him. When the matter came before the courts, the parents’ decision to let the child starve to death was reinforced.15

These babies died a slow and painful death. We treat animals better than these children were treated. How can you rationalize something like this? President Ronald Reagan denounced Baby Doe’s death: “The real issue for the courts was not whether Baby Doe was a human being. The real issue was whether to protect the life of a human being who had Down’s Syndrome. The judge let Baby Doe starve and die, and the Indiana Supreme Court sanctioned his decision.”16

The mentality that allowed two babies to starve to death may be wider spread than we think. Dr. C. Everett Koop said, “Surveys five years ago (1979) showed that about half the physicians contacted felt it was all right not to perform corrective surgery on an infant with Down’s Syndrome. They also would deny food to these retarded children, which subjects these infants to a very inhumane death by starvation.”17

Also, a panel of physicians, attorneys, PhD’s, a nurse, a social worker, and a science reporter voted in favor of infanticide for defective but self-sustaining infants. Moreover, 17 of the 20 panelists agreed it would be acceptable to directly kill such infants.18

A US doctor suggested that “five billion dollars could be saved in the next half-century (in Florida alone) if the state’s mongoloids were permitted to merely succumb to pneumonia – a disease to which they are highly susceptible.”19

Conclusion

If we continue to allow such practices we need to check our own qualifications for staying alive. Just being a living human being isn’t enough anymore. Either all men are created equal and have value according to the Lord who made them, or no one has any value, regardless of our efforts to throw together some sort of sliding scale. The ones who insist on the practices of euthanasia and infanticide are unknowingly signing their own death certificates. If their brothers and sisters in humanity are worthless, then so are they. The groundwork for more terrible crimes against humanity than we can even imagine has already been laid. What will we do about it?

“Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did It to one of these brothers of Mine, even the least of them, you did it to Me.” (Matt. 25:40)

I know that you don’t agree with my pro-life views but I wanted to challenge you as a fellow Christian to re-examine your pro-choice view. Although we are both Christians and have the Bible as the basis for our moral views, I did want you to take a close look at the views of the pro-life atheist Nat Hentoff too.  Hentoff became convinced of the pro-life view because of secular evidence that shows that the unborn child is human. I would ask you to consider his evidence and then of course reverse your views on abortion.

___________________

Nat Hentoff is an atheist, but he became a pro-life activist because of the scientific evidence that shows that the unborn child is a distinct and separate human being and even has a separate DNA. His perspective is a very intriguing one that I thought you would be interested in. I have shared before many   cases (Bernard Nathanson, Donald Trump, Paul Greenberg, Kathy Ireland)    when other high profile pro-choice leaders have changed their views and this is just another case like those. I have contacted the White House over and over concerning this issue and have even received responses. I am hopeful that people will stop and look even in a secular way (if they are not believers) at this abortion debate and see that the unborn child is deserving of our protection. That is why the writings of Nat Hentoff of the Cato Institute are so crucial.

Beyond the ‘rehearsed response’

by Nat Hentoff
The Village Voice, January 30, 1996

I read my fellow columnist Adolph Reed Jr. with interest and sometimes find him illuminating. But when he writes with what W.H. Auden used to call a ”rehearsed response”–rather than independent research–he is disappointingly ordinary.

In a recent Voice column, Professor Reed–he is a tenured savant at Northwestern University–elegantly described me as having a ”fetus fetish.” The professor went on to declare unequivocally that ”a fetus is not a human being, it’s an organism growing inside the body, albeit an organism with the potential to become a human being.”

Since he or she (even fetuses have genders) has not yet been admitted into our protected circle, it’s okay to kill him or her.

I am familiar with the argument, being confronted with this rationale for abortion when I speak on the subject at colleges–including Princeton, Brown, the Columbia University Law School, Harvard, and other campuses.

Invariably, I am invited to address these largely hostile audiences by a small, hardy group of prolifers who present me as an oddity for their side–somewhat like the two-headed boy in the carnival.

They have spread the word beforehand that I am an atheist civil libertarian who writes for that prochoice bastion, The Village Voice. They add that my writings make clear that my views have far more in common with the teachings of justices William Brennan and Thurgood Marshall than with those of the Christian Coalition’s Ralph Reed, whom I consider an enemy of the Bill of Rights.

So what the hell am I doing with a fetus fetish–particularly since Margot, my wife of many years, is unswervingly prochoice?

I begin my talks to students and faculty eager to dissect my heresy with a quote from the second edition of a standard medical textbook, The Unborn Patient: Prenatal Diagnosis and Treatment, published by W.B. Saunders Company, a division of Harcourt Brace, in 1991. The editors–all medical school professors at the University of California at San Francisco and experts in fetal treatment–are Michael Harrison, Mitchell Golbus, and Roy Filly.

God is nowhere mentioned in the textbook. The first chapter begins: ”The concept that the fetus is a patient, an individual whose maladies are a proper subject for medical treatment as well as scientific observation, is alarmingly modern. Only now are we beginning to consider the fetus seriously–medically, legally, and ethically.”

In recent years I’ve interviewed a number of physicians engaged in research on prenatal development. Without exception, they emphasize that human life is a continuum–from the implantation of a fertilized egg in the uterine lining to birth to death. Setting up divisions of this process to justify abortion –as in Roe v. Wade–is artificial. It’s a denial of biology. Whether in the fourth or 14th week, it is the life of a developing human being that is being killed. The American Medical News (June 20, 1994)–a weekly publication of the American Medical Association–has reported an analysis of the beginnings of human life by Dr. C. Ward Kischer, a professor in the department of anatomy at the University of Arizona College of Medicine. I commend it to Professor Reed:

”Every point in time is part of a continuum. Therefore, every point in development derives its significance from the previous point. Scientific ‘spin doctors’ have invented and promoted such bogus biology as ‘pre-embryo’ and ‘stages of individuality,’ and have duped many physicians who know little about human embryology. Many of them are now using this pseudo-science to justify human embryo experimentation. The Nuremberg trials settled this question conclusively.”

The Nuremberg trials were concerned solely with human beings, as I am.

In the February 18, 1990, Journal of the American Medical Association, Dr. Joel Hylton, a physician in Thomasville, North Carolina, who had people like Adolph Reed Jr. in mind, wrote:

”Who can say that the fetus is not alive and is not a separate genetic entity? Its humanity…also cannot be questioned scientifically. It is certainly of no other species. That it is dependent on another makes it qualitatively no different from countless other humans outside the womb.” (Emphasis added.)

Dr. Hylton added: ”It strikes me that to argue that one may take an innocent life to preserve the quality of life of another is cold and carries utilitarianism to an obscene extreme. Nowhere else in our society is this permitted or even thinkable–although abortion sets a frightening prospect.”

In 1975, Margot Hentoff wrote a piece on abortion in the Voice that created a great deal of comment, most of it savagely critical. Then, as now, she was for abortion rights. Then, as now, she was an admirer of George Orwell and shunned euphemisms. In any context, she does not turn away from–in William Burroughs’s phrase–”the naked lunch at the end of the fork.” To say the least, she is a challenge to live with and has made me more honest than I would have been otherwise.

In the Voice, Margot wrote:

”Here we have one of the problems created by the liberal community’s obfuscation of language in refusing to speak plainly about what abortion is.

”They have held on to the illogical concept that the fetus is not a human being, that no killing is involved, and that an abortion is merely an operative procedure on a woman who has the right to decide what she wants to do with her body and the products thereof.”

In the October 16, 1995, New Republic, Naomi Wolf, also strongly prochoice, wrote: ”Many pro-choice advocates developed a language to assert that the fetus isn’t a person, and this, over the years, has developed into a lexicon of dehumanization….

”How can we charge that it is vile and repulsive for pro-lifers to brandish vile and repulsive images if the images are real?”

In the past I have spent most of my time looking at this issue from the spiritual side.

Thank you so much for your time. I know how valuable it is. I also appreciate the fine family that you have and your commitment as a father and a husband. Now after presenting the secular approach of Nat Hentoff I wanted to make some comments concerning our shared Christian faith.  I  respect you for putting your faith in Christ for your eternal life. I am pleading to you on the basis of the Bible to please review your religious views concerning abortion. It was the Bible that caused the abolition movement of the 1800’s and it also was the basis for Martin Luther King’s movement for civil rights and it also is the basis for recognizing the unborn children.

Dr. Schaeffer’s sweeping epic on the rise and decline of Western thought and Culture

I love the works of Francis Schaeffer and I have been on the internet reading several blogs that talk about Schaeffer’s work and the work below was really helpful. Schaeffer’s film series “How should we then live?  Wikipedia notes, “According to Schaeffer, How Should We Then Live traces Western history from Ancient Rome until the time of writing (1976) along three lines: the philosophic, scientific, and religious.[3] He also makes extensive references to art and architecture as a means of showing how these movements reflected changing patterns of thought through time. Schaeffer’s central premise is: when we base society on the Bible, on the infinite-personal God who is there and has spoken,[4] this provides an absolute by which we can conduct our lives and by which we can judge society.  Here are some posts I have done on this series: Francis Schaeffer’s “How should we then live?” Video and outline of episode 10 “Final Choices” episode 9 “The Age of Personal Peace and Affluence”episode 8 “The Age of Fragmentation”episode 7 “The Age of Non-Reason” episode 6 “The Scientific Age”  episode 5 “The Revolutionary Age” episode 4 “The Reformation” episode 3 “The Renaissance”episode 2 “The Middle Ages,”, and  episode 1 “The Roman Age,” .

The Infinite-Personal God: Thoughts from Francis Schaeffer’s Escape from Reason

Perhaps you are familiar with the indie band Arcade Fire. Their most recent album is entitled Neon Bible. The songs on Neon Bible certainly reflect something of the Bible itself in so far as it raises some of life’s biggest questions. Some of these questions are about fear, faith, love and disappointment. On the album is an update version of their song “No Cars Go” in which we hear the eerie tone of the line “Don’t know where we are goin.’ The line gives the listener the sense that there is no certainty to what our end is. This captures much of what I think indie music captures about our fragmented culture where the greatest questions are asked, but with very few answers.Because we live in a postmodern culture where many are not afraid to ask honest questions about life, the concept of faith is quite popular. Francis Schaeffer’s work and his book Escape from Reason have made a tremendous contribution to an understanding of Christian faith in this type of cultural context. In Escape from Reason, Schaeffer is clear in pointing out that the Bible reveals that God is both infinite and personal. He is the infinite-personal God whom created all things out of nothing and therefore the creation is finite or limited. Only God alone is the infinite Creator, the Creator without limitations. On the side of infinity, Schaeffer points out that, humans are “as separated from God as is the machine.” (pg. 26)On the side of human personality, Schaeffer is clear that humans, being made in the image of God, were made to have a personal relationship with God. Schaeffer states, “On the side of personality you are related to God. You are not infinite but finite; nevertheless, you are truly personal; you are created in the image of the personal God who exists.” (pg. 26-27)As Schaeffer fleshes this idea out in Escape from Reason, he presents a clear Biblical view of human persons. About the Biblical view of the whole of a human being, Schaeffer states,

“It is not a Platonic view. The soul is not more important than the body. God made the whole man and the whole man is important. The doctrine of the biblical resurrection of the dead is not an old-fashioned thing. It tells us that God loves the whole man and the whole man is important. The biblical teaching, therefore, opposes the Platonic, which makes the soul (“the upper”) very important and leaves the body (“the lower”) with little importance at all. The biblical view opposes the humanistic position where the body and autonomous mind of man become important, and grace becomes very unimportant.”(pg. 28)

God made the whole human being and cares about the whole human being.

Schaeffer goes on to point out the importance of understanding historically the philosophical schools that have help to shape where we are today. He points out that in Western philosophy, from the rise of Greek philosophy until now, the commonly held belief that the hope of finding complete answers which would encompass all of thought and life would come through rationalism plus rationality rather than rationality and faith in the God of the Bible. In his book Death in the City Schaeffer states,

The Bible puts its religious teaching in a historic setting. It is quite the opposite of the new theology and existential thought, quite the opposite of the twentieth century’s reduction of religion to the “spiritual” and the subjective. Scripture relates true religion to space-time history which may be expressed in normal literary form. And that is important, because our generation takes the word religion and everything religious and turns it into something psychological or sociological…a holy and loving God really exists, and He works into the significant history which exists” (Death in the City, pg. 17)

The philosophical thought during the time of Kant and Rousseau in the late 1700’s was a time of fighting for freedom. The freedom that was sought after was an autonomous freedom in which human freedom would have no restraint or limitations. The quest for this kind of freedom took place during a time when Western philosophy was rationalistic, rational, and sought to find a unified field of knowledge.

Rationalism as Schaeffer puts it in Escape from Reason is “man begins absolutely and totally from himself, gathers the information concerning the particulars and formulates the universals.” (pg. 34) The term “rational” on the other hand has no relationship to “rationalism.” This term “rational” is the act in which “man’s aspirations for the validity of reason are well founded.” In other words, if something is true the opposite is not true. Schaeffer states,

The basic position of man in rebellion against God is that man is at the centre of the universe, that he is autonomous – here lies his rebellion. Man will keep his rationalism and his rebellion, his insistence on total autonomy or partially autonomous areas, even if it means he must give up his rationality.”(pg. 42)

With this quest for autonomy, humans began to view reality in which there is a large gap between nature and universals. Schaeffer states,

“The hope of a connecting link between two spheres has completely disappeared. There is a complete dichotomy between the upper and lower storeys. The line between the upper and lower storeys has become a concrete horizontal, ten thousand feet thick, with highly-charged barbed-wire fixed in the concrete…Below the line there is rationality and logic. The upper storey becomes the non-logical and the non-rational.”(pg. 46)

With this dichotomy, on the basis of reason human have no meaning, purpose, or significance. On the basis of the non-rational and non-reasonable humans obtain a sense of optimism. But from this worldview humans are left with the need to take a leap of faith because they cannot rationally search for God.

The search for significance is intrinsic to who we are as people made in the image of God. Humans made in the image of God cannot live as though they are insignificant. But humans cannot live in the lower storey and find adequate answers concerning meaning, purpose, and significance. Yet as Schaeffer states, “in our day, the sphere of faith is placed in the non-rational and non-logical as opposed to the rational and logical.” (pg. 75)

Schaeffer points out some consequences of pitting faith against rationality. First, if we separate the upper storey or the world of universals from nature there is no way of establishing a relationship between the upper storey and everyday life in regard to morality. Schaeffer states, “You cannot have real morals in the real world after you have made this separation.” (pg. 80) The second consequence is that the separation creates no adequate basis for law. God revealed something real in the common world of life. Third, the separation, “throws away the answer to the problem of evil.” Schaeffer states,

“the True Christian position is that, in space and time and history, there was an unprogrammed man who made a choice, and actually rebelled against God…without Christianity’s answer that God made a significant man in a significant history with evil being the result of Satan’s and then man’s historic space-time revolt, there is no answer but to accept Baudelaire’s answer [‘If there is a God, He is the devil’] with tears. Once the historic Christian answer is put away, all we can do is to leap upstairs and say that against all reason God is good.”(pg. 81)

Without Christianity’s answer to the problem of evil what we have left is an irrational leap of faith.

Christianity thoroughly provides an answer, but rationalism must be renounced and rationality embraced. Christianity provides a world and life view with a unified answer. Schaeffer states,

“On the side of infinity…we are separated from God entirely, but on the side of personality we are made in the image of God. So God can speak and tell us about Himself—not exhaustively, but truly. (We could not, after all, know anything exhaustively as finite creatures.) Then He has told us about things in the finite created realm, too. He has told us true things about the cosmos and history. Thus, we are not adrift.” (pg. 83)

I do recognize now that doubt is real and that doubt’s role is significant in our lives and yet at a fundamental level we have answers to our cry, “Don’t know where were goin.” Although we cannot have ultimate answers without something revealed about God and God indeed is made known in the person of Jesus Christ. The person and work of Christ is communicated to us in the story that the Bible tells. It is the story of the infinite-personal God drawing near because he cares. God cares about the whole of a human being. There is not an area of our life that he does not care about and there is not an area of our life that is autonomous. The Bible says first that there is an infinite-personal God who created all things. Because he created all things the universe begins as personal. Because it is personal the longings of love and communication are intrinsic to all of humanity.

God has also always existed and has created all things. Not only has God created all things, but created them outside of himself. Because he created all things outside of himself the world is objectively real and therefore there is a true history and a true me. Schaeffer states,

“If the intrinsically personal origin of the universe is rejected, what alternative outlook can anyone have? It must be said emphatically that there is no final answer except that man is a product of the impersonal, plus time, plus chance.” (pg. 87)

Humanism or rationalism says that humans can built bridges to ultimate answers apart from anyone else, apart from an infinite-personal God. But this is impossible given that humans are finite. Humans cannot point to anything with ultimate certainty. Regarding human quests for answers Schaeffer states,

“beginning only from himself autonomously, it is quite obvious that, being finite, he can never reach any absolute answer. This would be true if only on the basis of the fact that he is finite; but to this must be added the Fall, the fact of his rebellion.” (pg. 89)

We are not only finite and limited, but by nature our own quest for true significance and meaning takes place in autonomous rebellion against the God who is there.

But we have hope. The Bible states clearly that humans are made in the image of this infinite-personal God and this gives us a starting point at which to seek for ultimate answers. The Bible says even as lost and broken as we are, seeking to live life apart from the life source, the image of God is still exhibited in humans. We are not like from machines or plants as beautiful as they might be, because we are personal. But how can we seek the infinite-personal God if we ourselves are finite humans?

We cannot possess ultimate answers apart from the reference point of the infinite God himself. The humanist or rationalist puts himself at the center of the universe in order to seek ultimate meaning and answers. Schaeffer says this persons “insists on being autonomous with only the knowledge he can gather, and has ended up finding himself quite meaningless.” (pg. 90) The knowledge we can gather is limited and if it comes only from within we have no hope for ultimate answers regarding meaning and life.

Christianity does provide a worldview in which to wrestle with ultimate questions in not simply a theoretical way, but in a personal way. Schaeffer states,

“Christianity is a system which is composed of a set of ideas which can be discussed. By ‘system’ we do not mean a scholastic abstraction, nevertheless we do not shrink from using the word. The Bible does not set out unrelated thoughts. The system it sets forth has a beginning and moves from that beginning in a non-contradictory way. The beginning is the existence of the infinite-personal God as Creator of all else. Christianity is not just a vague set of incommunicable experiences, based on a totally unverifiable ‘leap in the dark.’ Neither conversion (the beginning of the Christian life) nor spirituality (the growth) should be such a leap. Both are firmly related to the God who is there and the knowledge He has given us – and both involve the whole man.”

I would add that the Bible is not just a system, but also a story. It is a story where God is the ultimate actor and also the one who has written the script. It is a story that reveals that the infinite-personal God is there and has drawn near to his people with a passionate pursuit. He is infinite and he is personal. As finite persons we can have hope that God has drawn personally near in the person of Jesus in whom the whole story points to.

Jesus is also the one who grants us the privilege of being included in this great story as well. Jesus through his death and resurrection from death provides a way to live personally with this infinite-personal God. Our response to his grace in drawing near ought to be acknowledging our rebellion as we have insistence on being autonomous. The meaningful life comes through acknowledging our dependence on the God who is there and in Jesus Christ as The Way, The Truth, and The Life.

The story continues to move forward unfolding toward a day when lost people from all nations will have their story included in the great story of God’s personal restoration of his people and the world. The story unfolds until one day we will know fully the God who is there. No longer must we live out our own story without a script. No longer must we live out our own story by the line, “Don’t no where were goin!”

Thursday, May 9, 2013 – By Jill Stanek

Although President Obama had no trouble commenting on the ongoing Trayvon Martin case, White House spokesperson Jay Carney said [last month] Obama wouldn’t be commenting on the Kermit Gosnell mass murder case because he “cannot take a position on an ongoing trial” or “comment further on an ongoing legal proceeding.”

Of course the White House wants to avoid this topic. What a disaster Gosnell is for Obama.

Gosnell first brings to Obama’s door the uncomfortable topic of infanticide. Obama is well known to have votedfour times against the Illinois Born Alive Infants Protection Act as state senator, which sought to protect abortion survivors.

But Obama also opposed two companion bills to BAIPA, one of which brings him zero degrees of separation from Gosnell. I was impressed with Fox’s Ed Henry, who went there in his questions to Carney [last month].

On April 4, 2002, Obama testified against Senate Bill 1663, which required abortionists to provide “reasonable measures consistent with good medical practice” to abortion survivors and to plan to have a second physician present if there was a “reasonable likelihood” that the abortion would result “in a live born child.”

You can read the entire transcript here, but the gist of Obama’s opposition was that he had full faith in abortionists:

The only plausible rationale, to my mind, of this legislation would be if you had a suspicion that a doctor . . . (a) is going to make the wrong assessment, and (b) if the physician discovered, after the labor had been induced, that, in fact, he made an error . . . and . . . would not try to exercise the sort of medical measures and practices that would be involved in saving that child.

Now, if you think that there are possibilities that doctors would not do that, then maybe this bill make sense, but I . . . feel . . . an additional doctor who then has to be called in an emergency situation to come in and make these assessments is really designed to burden the original decision of the woman and the physician.

[I]f these are children who are being born alive, I, at least, have confidence that a doctor who is in that room is going to make sure that they’re looked after.

Obama could not fathom that an abortionist who had been paid to kill a baby wouldn’t turn around and try to save a viable baby’s life in the event of a botch.

Kermit Gosnell would have been one of the abortionists in which Obama had “confidence.” Most know by now Gosnell is on trial for murdering seven abortion survivors and one mother.

Gosnell was committing abortions in Pennsylvania at the very time this bill was being debated in Illinois. Who knows, perhaps Gosnell was “snipping” the spinal cord of an abortion survivor at the moment Obama testified to his sterling character. After all, the grand jury report stated Gosnell likely killed “hundreds” of abortion survivors during the three decades he was in business.

Barack Obama has stated on record that he stands with the Kermit Gosnells of America. He can’t walk that back without opening the door to regulations such as he rejected as state senator. So he’s stuck.

Jill Stanek’s commitment to Christ led her to risk her job, reputation, and friendships to stop the terrible practices of abortion and infanticide. Jill was a registered nurse at Christ Hospital in Illinois when she made the shocking discovery that babies were being aborted alive and allowed to die without medical care. Jill went public and has since become a national figure in the effort to protect both born and preborn infants. In January 2003, Jill was named by World Magazine as one of the 30 most prominent pro-life leaders in the movement over the past 30 years.

“Schaeffer Sunday” Abortion debating with Ark Times Bloggers Part 12 “Is there a biological reason to be pro-life?” and the article “How Francis Schaeffer shaped Michele Bachman’s pro-life views” (includes the film TRUTH AND HISTORY and editorial cartoon)

I have debated with Ark Times Bloggers many times in the past on many different subjects. Abortion is probably the most often debated subject and I have noticed that many pro-life individuals are now surfacing on the Arkansas Times Blog.  Here are some examples. Arhogfan501 asserted: This is the beginning of the end for recreational abortion in Arkansas. Songbird777 noted: Babies have a right to live and not be chopped up for someone else’s convenience. The person using the username “baker” commented: Planned Parenthood (PPA) does not nor cannot provide mammograms, indeed no affiliate has the necessary license. PPA is an abortion provider and at some 900 plus killings a day rather prolific.

Here is another debate I got into recently on the Arkansas Times Blog and I go by the username “Saline Republican”:

____________

The person going by the username “Steven E” asserted:

Not snarky and unsubstantiated lunacy as stating that it is not life, or whatever nonsense you spouted.

It is fine to go after those that spout only from faith, but what about biology?

I replied:

Steven E asks, “It is fine to go after those that spout only from faith, but what about biology?”
______
How about the secular man Dr. Bernard Nathanson who left the abortion movement in the 1970’s because he was convinced the unborn baby could experience pain? Is that an argument from biology? (Dr. Nathanson later converted to become a Catholic from agnosticism.)

At the time of Dr. Nathanson’s death in 2011 I read this article by Dr. George. Robert P. George is McCormick Professor of Jurisprudence and Director of the James Madison Program in American Ideals and Institutions at Princeton University. He is a member of the President’s Council on Bioethics and previously served on the United States Commission on Civil Rights.
“Bernard Nathanson: A Life Transformed by the Truth about Abortion.” (Feb 11, 2011)

(Here is a portion of that article.)

Nathanson later in his life became a pro-life advocate. In 1985, Nathanson employed the new fetal imaging technology to produce a documentary film, “The Silent Scream,” which energized the pro-life movement and threw the pro-choice side onto the defensive by showing in graphic detail the killing of a twelve-week-old fetus in a suction abortion. Nathanson used the footage to describe the facts of fetal development and to make the case for the humanity and dignity of the child in the womb. At one point, viewers see the child draw back from the surgical instrument and open his mouth: “This,” Nathanson says in the narration, “is the silent scream of a child threatened imminently with extinction.”

______________

In the film series “WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE HUMAN RACE?” the arguments are presented  against abortion (Episode 1),  infanticide (Episode 2),   euthenasia (Episode 3), and then there is a discussion of the Christian versus Humanist worldview concerning the issue of “the basis for human dignity” in Episode 4 and then in the last episode a close look at the truth claims of the Bible.

I truly believe that many of the problems we have today in the USA are due to the advancement of humanism in the last few decades in our society. Ronald Reagan appointed the evangelical Dr. C. I read a very good article back during the middle of the Republican Presidential Primary about Michele Bachman and how her pro-life views evolved after reading the works of Francis Schaeffer and Dr. C. Everett Koop. Here it is:

Bachmann: Christian Writer Francis Schaeffer Shaped Pro-Life Views

by Steven Ertelt | Des Moines, IA | LifeNews.com | 7/26/11 12:06 PM

Congresswoman Michele Bachmann is one of the several pro-life advocates seeking the Republican nomination to face pro-abortion President Barack Obama and she cites Christian writer Francis Schaeffer as an influence on her pro-life views.

In a campaign stop to speak to local residents at a church in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Bachmann shared her testimony and talked about the Christian faith she and her husband share. That faith, which has matured thanks to the writings of Schaeffer, has led Bachman to a pro-life view that has seen her compile a 100% pro-life voting record in Congress and adopt dozens of foster children.

“One thing that Dr. Schaeffer said is that [God is] not just the God of theology. He’s not just the God of the Bible,” Bachmann said, according to the Des Moines Register. “Since he is the Creator God, he’s the father of biology, sociology, of political science, of you name the subject. … And that altered our way of thinking, that God had something to say about our career.”

“Francis Schaeffer also said that life is the watershed issue of our time, and how we come down on how we view human life will impact all other issues,” she said. “And so Marcus and I decided we didn’t want to be pro-life only, just as speaking… We wanted to live a life of being about pro-life.”

The Register indicates Bachmann told the audience that, upon the encouragement to put her pro-life views into action, she and her husband began counseling and praying with single mothers and helping them get to pregnancy and adoption centers to provide further practical support instead of abortion.

“This is not to condemn any woman who here has ever had an abortion or participated in one,” she said, according to the newspaper. “Because God is there also with grace and mercy in that situation, but to say that he is the life-giving only God who has answers in the midst of our trying times.”

Dave Andrusko, of the National Right to Life Committee, says he is not surprised Schaeffer helped shaped Bachmann’s faith and pro-life views.

“There are a couple of reasons it’s useful to talk about Congresswoman Bachmann’s talk—her testimony. Like almost all the GOP candidates current running, and most of the few who may still jump in, she is staunchly pro-life,” he says. “Schaeffer is perhaps best known to pro-life veterans for co-authoring with Dr. C. Everett Koop (later Surgeon General) the hugely influential “Whatever Happened to the Human Race?” Both as a book and a video series, the impact of “Whatever Happened to the Human Race” cannot be exaggerated. It awakened and mobilized Evangelical Protestants as nothing before had ever done.”

He called the Bachmanns “loving pro-lifers” who have expressed their Christian faith and pro-life views “through the hands and feet” of action.

President Obama talks a lot about hope and change but how does that apply to unborn babies? This editorial cartoon touches on this issue.

“Sanctity of Life Saturday” Pro-life atheist Nat Hentoff quotes wise 9 yr kid concerning abortion, “It doesn’t matter what month. It still means killing the babies.”

The pro-life atheist Nat Hentoff wrote a fine article below I wanted to share with you.

Insisting on life

http://www.NewsandOpinion.com | A longtime friend of mine is married to a doctor who also performs abortions. At the dinner table one recent evening, their 9-year-old son — having heard a word whose meaning he didn’t know — asked, “What is an abortion?” His mother, choosing her words carefully, described the procedure in simple terms.

“But,” said her son, “that means killing the baby.” The mother then explained that there are certain months during which an abortion cannot be performed, with very few exceptions. The 9-year-old shook his head. “But,” he said, “it doesn’t matter what month. It still means killing the babies.”

Hearing the story, I wished it could be repeated to the justices of the Supreme Court, in the hope that at least five of them might act on this 9-year-old’s clarity of thought and vision.

The boy’s spontaneous insistence on the primacy of life also reminded me of a powerful pro-life speaker and writer who, many years ago, helped me become a pro-lifer. He was a preacher, a black preacher. He said: “There are those who argue that the right to privacy is of a higher order than the right to life.

“That,” he continued, “was the premise of slavery. You could not protest the existence or treatment of slaves on the plantation because that was private and therefore out of your right to be concerned.”

This passionate reverend used to warn: “Don’t let the pro-choicers convince you that a fetus isn’t a human being. That’s how the whites dehumanized us … The first step was to distort the image of us as human beings in order to justify what they wanted to do — and not even feel they’d done anything wrong.”

That preacher was Jesse Jackson. Later, he decided to run for the presidency — and it was a credible campaign that many found inspiring in its focus on what still had to be done on civil rights. But Jackson had by now become “pro-choice” — much to the appreciation of most of those in the liberal base.

The last time I saw Jackson was years later, on a train from Washington to New York. I told him of a man nominated, but not yet confirmed, to a seat on a federal circuit court of appeals. This candidate was a strong supporter of capital punishment — which both the Rev. Jackson and I oppose, since it involves the irreversible taking of a human life by the state.

I asked Jackson if he would hold a press conference in Washington, criticizing the nomination, and he said he would. The reverend was true to his word; the press conference took place; but that nominee was confirmed to the federal circuit court. However, I appreciated Jackson’s effort.

On that train, I also told Jackson that I’d been quoting — in articles, and in talks with various groups — from his compelling pro-life statements. I asked him if he’d had any second thoughts on his reversal of those views.

Usually quick to respond to any challenge that he is not consistent in his positions, Jackson paused, and seemed somewhat disquieted at my question. Then he said to me, “I’ll get back to you on that.” I still patiently await what he has to say.

As time goes on, my deepening concern with the consequences of abortion is that its validation by the Supreme Court, as a constitutional practice, helps support the convictions of those who, in other controversies — euthanasia, assisted suicide and the “futility doctrine” by certain hospital ethics committees — believe that there are lives not worth continuing.

Around the time of my conversation with Jackson on the train, I attended a conference on euthanasia at Clark College in Worcester, Mass. There, I met Derek Humphry, the founder of the Hemlock Society, and already known internationally as a key proponent of the “death with dignity” movement.

He told me that for some years in this country, he had considerable difficulty getting his views about assisted suicide and, as he sees it, compassionate euthanasia into the American press.

“But then,” Humphry told me, “a wonderful thing happened. It opened all the doors for me.”

“What was that wonderful thing?” I asked.

“Roe v. Wade,” he answered.

The devaluing of human life — as the 9-year-old at the dinner table put it more vividly — did not end with making abortion legal, and therefore, to some people, moral. The word “baby” does not appear in Roe v. Wade — let alone the word “killing.”

And so, the termination of “lives not worth living” goes on.
