Dear Mr. President,

I really do respect you for trying to get a pulse on what is going on out here. I know that you don’t agree with my pro-life views but I wanted to challenge you as a fellow Christian to re-examine your pro-choice view.

In the past I have spent most of my time looking at this issue from the spiritual side. In the film series “WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE HUMAN RACE?” the arguments are presented  against abortion (Episode 1),  infanticide (Episode 2),   euthanasia (Episode 3), and then there is a discussion of the Christian versus Humanist worldview concerning the issue of “the basis for human dignity” in Episode 4 and then in the last episode a close look at the truth claims of the Bible.

THE WHITE HOUSE

WASHINGTON

July 9, 2021

Mr. Everette Hatcher III

Alexander, AR

Dear Mr. Hatcher,

Thank you for taking your time to share your thoughts on abortion. Hearing from passionate individuals like me inspires me every day, and I welcome the opportunity to respond to your letter

Our country faces many challenges, and the road we will travel together will be one of the most difficult in our history. Despite these tough times, I have never been more optimistic for the future of America. I believe we are better positioned than any country in the world to lead in the 21st century not just by the example of our power but by the power of our example.

As we move forward to address the complex issues of our time, I encourage you to remain an active participant in helping write the next great chapter of the American story. We need your courage and dedication at this critical time, and we must meet this moment together as the United States of America. If we do that, I believe that our best days still lie ahead.

Sincerely

Joe Biden

Jonathan Mitchell has rightly noted:

“Women can ‘control their reproductive lives’ without access to abortion; they can do so by refraining from sexual intercourse,” Mitchell writes. “One can imagine a scenario in which a woman has chosen to engage in unprotected (or insufficiently protected) sexual intercourse on the assumption that an abortion will be available to her later. But when this court announces the overruling of Roe, that individual can simply change their behavior in response to the court’s decision if she no longer wants to take the risk of an unwanted pregnancy.”

Texas doctor claims state’s new abortion law is illegal, says he has already violated it

An obstetrician-gynecologist from San Antonio writes that he understands “there could be legal consequences” because of his action

By Dom Calicchio| Fox News

Texas doctor claimed Saturday that he has deliberately violated the state’s new abortion law in order to help test whether it’s legal.

Alan Braid, an obstetrician-gynecologist in San Antonio, explained his actions in an essay published in The Washington Post.

Braid writes that he understands “there could be legal consequences” because of his action.

“But I wanted to make sure that Texas didn’t get away with its bid to prevent this blatantly unconstitutional law from being tested.”

He added later: “I understand that by providing an abortion beyond the new legal limit, I am taking a personal risk, but it’s something I believe in strongly.”

“I understand that by providing an abortion beyond the new legal limit, I am taking a personal risk, but it’s something I believe in strongly.”— Alan Braid, obstetrician-gynecologist in San Antonio

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, a Republican, signed the abortion bill into law in May and it took effect Sept. 1.

Jonathan Mitchell, a former Texas solicitor general who helped prepare the bill, defended it in a legal brief submitted to the U.S. Supreme Court in which he calls on the court to overturn Roe v. Wade, the 1973 high court decision that legalized abortion, The Guardian reported.

Mitchell argues in the brief that a higher degree of personal integrity in response to a court ban on abortions would help make illegal abortions unnecessary, according to the news outlet.

The Supreme Court is expected to address a Mississippi case in its next term that could affect Roe v. Wade, The Guardian reported.

But Braid doesn’t support a return to the days before Roe v. Wade, he writes in the Post.

“For me, it is 1972 all over again,” Braid writes. At that time, he continues, abortions in Texas were available mostly to women of economic means who could afford to travel to states like California, Colorado or New York to have the procedure done. He claims that Texas’ new law returns the state to those days.

He claims he watched three teenagers die from the effects of illegal abortions while performing emergency-room duty as an OB-GYN resident at a San Antonio hospital.

On Sept. 6, five days after the new Texas law took effect Sept. 1, he writes, he provided an abortion to a woman in the first trimester of her pregnancy – a violation of the state law.

“I acted because I had a duty of care to this patient, as I do for all patients, and because she has a fundamental right to receive this care.”

Last Tuesday, the U.S. Justice Department asked a federal judge in Texas to temporarily halt the implementation of the new Texas law.

The emergency motion seeking a temporary restraining order comes days after the DOJ sued Texas over the law, claiming it was enacted to “prevent women from exercising their constitutional rights.”

The law went into effect on Sept. 1 after being upheld in a 5-4 decision by the U.S. Supreme Court. It is the strictest abortion law in the country. Critics say many women don’t yet know they’re pregnant at six weeks – around the time when a fetal heartbeat can first be detected – and the law makes no exceptions for rape or incest

“It’s clearly unconstitutional,” Attorney General Merrick Garland said earlier this month. “The obvious and expressly acknowledged intention of this statutory scheme is to prevent women from exercising their constitutional rights.”

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and other Republicans have vowed to defend the new law.

“Biden should focus on fixing the border crisis, Afghanistan, the economy and countless other disasters instead of meddling in states’ sovereign rights,” Paxton wrote on Twitter on Sept. 9. “I will use every available resource to fight for life.”

The law prohibits all abortions once a fetal heartbeat can be detected, usually around six weeks, and also allows individuals who oppose abortion to sue clinics and others who assist a woman in getting an abortion.

I am a proud member of the National Association of Christian Lawmakers and I attended the convention in Dallas in July and we have officially launched a nationwide push against abortion rights.

The article below notes:

At its first annual policy conference last weekend, group members voted to make a controversial new Texas law, the “Texas Heartbeat Bill,” the organization’s first piece of model legislation, meaning that similar bills may soon pop up in state capitols across the country.

Also I am excited to report that the WASHINGTON POST wrote in September 3, 2021:

Announcing he planned to introduce a copycat bill, Arkansas state Sen. Jason Rapert (R), the founder and president of the National Association of Christian Lawmakers, shared a template of legislation lawmakers in other states could fill in the blanks on and reproduce.

At the July 17th session of THE CHRISTIAN LAWMAKERS meeting in Dallas, I really got a lot out of the expert panel moderated by Texas State Senator Bryan Hughes entitled ABOLISHING ABORTION IN AMERICA. Here below is what Wikipedia says about Senator Hughes:

On March 11, 2021, Hughes introduced a fetal heartbeat bill entitled the Texas Heartbeat Bill (SB8) into the Texas Senate and state representative Shelby Slawson of Stephenville, Texas introduced a companion bill (HB1515) into the state house.[22]The bill allows private citizens to sue abortion providers after a fetal heartbeat has been detected.[22] The SB8 version of the bill passed both chambers and was signed into law by Texas Governor Greg Abbott on May 19, 2021.[22] It took effect on September 1, 2021.[22]

Thank you so much for your time. I know how valuable it is. I also appreciate the fine family that you have and your commitment as a father and a husband. Now I wanted to make some comments concerning our shared Christian faith.  I  respect you for putting your faith in Christ for your eternal life. I am pleading to you on the basis of the Bible to please review your religious views concerning abortion. It was the Bible that caused the abolition movement of the 1800’s and it also was the basis for Martin Luther King’s movement for civil rights and it also is the basis for recognizing the unborn children.

Mr. President, you said you like hearing opinions from people like me and I hope you will be against court packing. I recently read:

Democrats’ calls to pack the court grew to a fever pitch when Barrett was confirmed about a week before the 2020 presidential election after bitter memories of then-Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell refusing to give then-President Obama’s nominee, Merrick Garland, a confirmation hearing after Garland was nominated to replace Justice Antonin Scalia, who died suddenly in 2016.

Clarence Thomas blasts media, defends Supreme Court after Texas abortion decision

Last weekend, Justice Amy Coney Barrett said the court’s justices are not “partisan hacks”

By Brie Stimson| Fox News

Justice Clarence Thomas became the latest member of the U.S. Supreme Court to take aim at the media, defending the court as nonpartisan Thursday as he warned against “destroying our institutions because they don’t give us what we want, when we want it,” according to reports.

“I think the media makes it sound as though you are just always going right to your personal preference,” Thomas told an audience at the University of Notre Dame, the Washington Post reported. “So if they think you are anti-abortion or something personally, they think that’s the way you always will come out. They think you’re for this or for that. They think you become like a politician.”

“I think the media makes it sound as though you are just always going right to your personal preference.” — Justice Clarence Thomas, U.S. Supreme Court

Thomas’ words came in the wake of the high court’s controversial 5-4 decision earlier this month to allow a restrictive Texas abortion law to take effect. Critics worry it could lead to the landmark Roe v. Wade decision being overturned.

Thomas has previously called on the court to overturn the 1973 ruling that legalized abortion throughout the U.S.

Last weekend, newest Justice Amy Coney Barrett defended her colleagues, saying they were not “partisan hacks.” She also blamed the media for making decisions that “seem results-oriented.”

AMY CONEY BARRETT SAYS SUPREME COURT JUSTICES AREN’T ‘PARTISAN HACKS’ AMID DEM COURT-PACKING THREATS: REPORT

“Sometimes, I don’t like the results of my decisions. But it’s not my job to decide cases based on the outcome I want,” she said. “Judicial philosophies are not the same as political parties.”

Thomas agreed with that sentiment.

“You do your job and you go cry alone,” he said. But he also warned against judges acting politically.

“The court was thought to be the least dangerous branch and we may have become the most dangerous.”

“The court was thought to be the least dangerous branch and we may have become the most dangerous.” — Justice Clarence Thomas, U.S. Supreme Court

Liberal Justice Stephen Breyer also recently reassured that his court colleagues weren’t “junior league” politicians, according to the Post.

Following the abortion decision, Democrats have revived their call to add seats to the Supreme Court to try to shift its majority left after former President Trump added three conservative justices.

McConnell claimed at the time that the next president should decide.

The court is scheduled to hear a Mississippi case over a law that bans abortions in the state at 15 weeks in the upcoming term, according to The Hill.

I am a proud member of the National Association of Christian Lawmakers and I attended the convention in Dallas in July and we have officially launched a nationwide push against abortion rights.

Dear Mr.

I truly believe that many of the problems we have today in the USA are due to the advancement of humanism in the last few decades in our society. Ronald Reagan appointed the evangelical Dr. C. Everett Koop to the position of Surgeon General in his administration. He partnered with Dr. Francis Schaeffer in making the video WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE HUMAN RACE? which can be found on You Tube. It is very valuable information for Christians to have.

Today I want to respond to your letter to me on July 9, 2021. Here it is below:

Sincerely

Joe Biden

I am excited that you said “Thank you for taking your time to share your thoughts on abortion. Hearing from passionate individuals like me inspires me every day,” because I am passionate about the pro-life cause and I have tried to make a difference.

Vote to declare Saline County ‘Pro-Life’ passes unanimously in committee

  • Sep 8, 2021 Updated Sep 8, 2021

A meeting of the Public Works and Safety Committee was standing room only as the Public Works and Safety Committee of the Saline County Quorum Court voted Tuesday to declare Saline County a “Pro-Life” county.

Justice of the Peace Davie Gibson brought forth the resolution.

Saline County residents spoke against and in support of the resolution. The number of those in attendance who supported the resolution greatly outnumbered those against it.

When the meeting began and the resolution was read aloud, instantly the crowd began to cheer in support of the resolution.

Melinda Williams was the first to address the court with a public comment.

“I would like to know the legalities in what this resolution is, and what is trying to be accomplished with this resolution,” she said.

Justice of the Peace Everett Hatcher responded.

“This is not the first time a Quorum Court in Arkansas has done this,” Hatcher stated, adding that Washington County and Benton County Quorum Courts had passed similar resolutions.

Hatcher went on to say that this was not a legal issue the court was trying to change, and that the JPs were just trying to let people know what the position of the court is on this issue.

Williams began to ask the court if they had heard from anyone who opposed the resolution before she had spoken to them and was interrupted by Justice of the Peace Josh Curtis.

“Ma’am, this is just public comment, you don’t get to ask the questions, we ask the questions,” Curtis told Williams.

“Oh really? I’m a citizen here and I don’t agree with this, I’m not sure that y’all have heard anyone that does not agree with you,” Williams responded.

When Williams mentioned that the entirety of the court are Republicans, the crowd began to laugh.

Ken Yang was the next to speak. Yang, who supported the resolution, is the president of the Republican County Chairman’s Association, and the chairman of the Republican Party of Saline County.

“Saline County is not only one of the reddest and most Republican counties in the state, but one of the reddest and most Republican counties in the nation,” Yang said.

Yang went on to say that two of the Republican Party principles are the belief in “the power of God almighty” and “the sanctity of life.”

“This resolution is affirmation of those principles that all 13 of y’all, including the county judge, agreed to stand for when deciding to run as Republicans,” Yang added.

Victoria Williams, a resident of Benton who was against the resolution, pressed the court.

“I do not support this resolution. Because in effect the pro-life movement is the anti-abortion movement. If truly, you are for the sanctity of life, why are you only talking about what you are against? Why aren’t you offering resolutions that offer support to impoverished children? Why aren’t you talking about free school lunches for all students? Why aren’t you talking about supporting mothers who find themselves in this situation where they have an unplanned pregnancy and they don’t feel they can support the child. That is a scary position for any woman to be in,” Victoria Williams said. “I would like some empathy and understanding for the plight of young women that end up with unplanned pregnancies, which is what results in abortion. Instead of taking away choices, provide more choices, provide more support and truly be compassionate if that’s what you are about.”

The back and forth continued with many rising to speak in support of the resolution. Multiple women told their personal stories.

Janet Dixon from New Beginnings Pregnancy Center spoke as well. New Beginnings offers support to new mothers with babies up to 24 months in age, according to their website. Dixon pointed out that instead of choosing to have an abortion, those seeking one could come to New Beginnings for alternatives and support.

Kandi Cox, of ABBA Adoptions and ABBA Charities, also spoke about the resources her organizations provide for mothers who wish to put their child up for adoption.

One woman who attended the meeting said she was 34 weeks pregnant and had originally thought about abortion, but took a different path with the help of New Beginnings.

Throughout the public comments portion of the meeting, more than a dozen residents spoke in support of the resolution and continued to receive cheers from the crowd.

After receiving approval by the committee, the resolution will now go before the full court during the next meeting set for Sept. 20 in the Saline County Courthouse.

More information about other action taken during the meeting will be featured in an upcoming edition of The Saline Courier.

Dear Mr.

I truly believe that many of the problems we have today in the USA are due to the advancement of humanism in the last few decades in our society. Ronald Reagan appointed the evangelical Dr. C. It is very valuable information for Christians to have.

Today I want to respond to your letter to me on July 9, 2021. Here it is below:

Sincerely

Joe Biden

Texas abortion law: Biden’s DOJ asks judge to intervene

Strictest abortion law in country went into effect Sept. 1 in Texas after being upheld in 5-4 decision by U.S. Supreme Court

By Brie Stimson| Fox News

The U.S. Department of Justice late Tuesday asked a federal judge in Texas to temporarily halt the controversial new state law that bans abortions after about six weeks.

Critics say many women don’t yet know they’re pregnant at six weeks – around the time when a fetal heartbeat can first be detected – and the law makes no exceptions for rape or incest.

“It’s clearly unconstitutional,” Attorney General Merrick Garland said last Thursday. “The obvious and expressly acknowledged intention of this statutory scheme is to prevent women from exercising their constitutional rights.”

The Texas Heartbeat Act, or S.B. 8, was signed by Republican Gov. Greg Abbott in May and empowers private citizens to enforce it by allowing them to sue anyone who allegedly helps a woman get an abortion illegally.

DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE SUES TEXAS OVER ABORTION LAW: ‘CLEARLY UNCONSTITUTIONAL’

“Texas devised an unprecedented scheme that seeks to deny women and providers the ability to challenge [the law] in federal court,” the department wrote. “This attempt to shield a plainly unconstitutional law from review cannot stand.”

The DOJ argued the law is in conflict with Roe v. Wade and “a woman’s right to terminate her pregnancy before viability.”

In response to last week’s lawsuit, Abbott’s press secretary Renae Eze said, “The most precious freedom is life itself. Texas passed a law that ensures that the life of every child with a heartbeat will be spared from the ravages of abortion. Unfortunately, President Biden and his Administration are more interested in changing the national narrative from their disastrous Afghanistan evacuation and reckless open border policies instead of protecting the innocent unborn. We are confident that the courts will uphold and protect that right to life.”

Abbott’s office didn’t immediately respond to Fox News’ late-night request for comment.

Fox News’ Jessica Chasmar contributed to this report.

I hope you are right in this part of your letter:

I believe we are better positioned than any country in the world to lead in the 21st century not just by the example of our power but by the power of our example.

This could be said of us if we show the world that it is time to lead by example and RECOGNIZE THE UNBORN CHILD!!! The Dobbs case will touch on the landmark Roe v. Report Cites These Scientific Facts About Unborn Babies at 15 Weeks

Mary Margaret Olohan  @MaryMargOlohan /September 13, 2021

 width=

“Why does the abortion industry assume the right to play God?” asks Charles Donovan, president of the Charlotte Lozier Institute. Pictured: an unborn baby at 20 weeks. (Computer illustration: Science Photo Library/Getty Images)

A new report from the pro-life Charlotte Lozier Institute highlights scientific facts about babies at 15 weeks of gestation in the run-up to a monumental and contentious abortion case before the Supreme Court.

The report, called “15 Facts at 15 Weeks” and first obtained by The Daily Caller News Foundation, is intended to help the public, media, and lawmakers understand the science behind fetal gestation before the high court considers a Mississippi law that bans abortions after 15 weeks. dailycallerlogo

“How can you follow the science of a 15-week preborn baby already being left-handed, with a heart that’s beat nearly 16 million times, and still fight to deny this little boy or little girl all of their unalienable rights?” Charlotte Lozier Institute President Charles A. Donavan asked in a written statement. “Why does the abortion industry assume the right to play God?”

The institute’s report dives into the details of fetal development, noting that an unborn baby at 15 weeks’ gestation has all its major organs formed and that the baby’s heart, which pumps 26 quarts of blood per day, has beaten approximately 15,800,000 times.

Each of the unborn baby’s fingers can move separately, the report says, and the baby will choose between sucking its left or right thumb and will respond to touch and taste.

The baby also will have been practicing breathing for over six weeks and can feel pain, according to the report. An unborn baby girl already will have most of the eggs that she ever will produce at 15 weeks, and much of the baby’s skeleton will have hardened from cartilage into bonet.

“It is interesting to note that in prenatal surgeries, the fetus is anesthetized separately from the mom to create the best outcomes,” Lozier scholar Katrina Furth said in a written statement, adding:

These preborn babies show preferences independent from their mothers and have goal-directed behaviors. To say these amazing, tiny baby girls and boys don’t deserve the same human rights as you and I is to deny the clear evidence of science.

The case known as Dobbs vs. Jackson Women’s Health Organization is about a 2018 Mississippi law challenged by the Center for Reproductive Rights, the law firm Paul Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison, and the Mississippi Center for Justice on behalf of the last remaining abortion clinic in Mississippi, which is called Jackson Women’s Health Organization.

After the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals struck down the law in December 2019, Mississippi asked the Supreme Court to take up the case.

The Dobbs case will touch on the landmark Roe v. Wade ruling in 1973 legalizing abortion across the nation, since the Supreme Court will hear arguments on whether abortion bans prior to fetal viability are constitutional, signaling that the court is focused on the constitutionality of legal limits on late-term abortions.

“That the Supreme Court is considering this Mississippi law is a promising signal that perhaps a majority of justices wish to give states greater power to regulate abortion,” Steven H. Aden, chief legal officer and general counsel for Americans United for Life, said in a May statement. “At the same time, if the court rejects Mississippi’s commonsense HB 1510 protections, the pro-life movement will face a fundamental reckoning.”

Dear Mr.

Sincerely

Joe Biden

Hack of Texas GOP website on 9/11 ‘made my day,’ ex-Biden-Obama adviser says

Jon Cooper previously mocked vaccine opponents, writing, ‘I see soon-to-be-dead people’

By Dom Calicchio | Fox News

The website of the Texas Republican Party was hacked Saturday by a group that claimed to be protesting the state’s newly enacted abortion law, according to reports.

Among those reacting to the news was Jon Cooper, a former New York financial adviser to President Biden and former President Barack Obama.

“It made my day,” Cooper wrote on Twitter on Saturday, as the nation marked 20 years since the 9/11 terror attacks.

Cooper served as national finance chairman for Draft Biden 2016, Long Island campaign chairman for Obama, and served as majority leader in the legislature of Suffolk County, New York.

Last month, Cooper tweeted a photoshopped mashup of real-life vaccine-mandate protesters and the child character from the 1999 movie “The Sixth Sense” and added his comment: “I see soon-to-be-dead people.”

Added to the Texas GOP site over several hours Saturday were a Rick Astley music video, a lewd photograph and a statement claiming the state’s Republicans were trying to take away women’s rights, Texas Public Radio reported.

Texas: Taking voices from women to promote theocratic erosion of church/state barriers,” the message said, according to the news outlet.

The group conducting the hack identified itself as “Anonymous” with a banner across the top of the page, the report said.

Hearing set for Monday

Texas Senate Bill 8, which many supports call the “heartbeat bill,” took effect Sept. 1 after being passed by the state’s GOP-led Legislature and signed into law by Republican Gov. Greg Abbott. The U.S. Supreme Court voted 5-4 not to block the law, but on Sept. 3 a Texas judge issued a temporary restraining order shielding the state’s abortion clinics from facing lawsuits that are permitted under the new law. A hearing in the case is scheduled for Monday.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Justice Department on Thursday filed a lawsuit against Texas, claiming the state’s new law is unconstitutional.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and other Republicans have vowed to defend the new law.

“Biden should focus on fixing the border crisis, Afghanistan, the economy and countless other disasters instead of meddling in states’ sovereign rights,” Paxton wrote on Twitter. “I will use every available resource to fight for life.”

The law, which Abbott signed in May, prohibits all abortions once a fetal heartbeat can be detected, usually around six weeks, and also allows individuals who oppose abortion to sue clinics and others who assist a woman in getting an abortion.

Liberals, including Democratic lawmakers and celebrities, have spoken out against the Texas law and some businesses have taken stands against it as well, including ride-hailing service providers Lyft and Uber, which have pledged to help any drivers who are sued because of the law

Dear Mr. Hatcher,

Thank you for taking your time to share your thoughts on abortion. Hearing from passionate individuals like me inspires me every day, and I welcome the opportunity to respond to your letter

New York Times Story on Biden Budget Says Life Begins at Conception

A New York Times news story on President Joe Biden’s $3.5 trillion budget repeatedly refers to life beginning at conception.

“From Cradle to Grave, Democrats Move to Expand Social Safety Net,” a Times headline published Monday reads, accompanied by this subhead: “The $3.5 trillion social policy bill that lawmakers begin drafting this week would touch virtually every American, at every point in life, from conception to old age.”dailycallerlogo

The first paragraph of the Times story also refers to life beginning at conception, noting that Democrats’ legislation would “touch virtually every American’s life, from conception to aged infirmity.”

Further down in the story, veteran journalist and Times writer Jonathan Weisman again refers to life as beginning at conception, writing: “To grasp the intended measure’s scope, consider a life, from conception to death.”

The Times did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Daily Caller News Foundation.

Arguments over when life begins are fundamental to the modern debate on abortion. Only last week, Biden said that though he respects Americans who believe life begins at conception, he does not agree with them. It was a strong departure from his prior statements on the matter.

“I am a strong supporter of Roe v. Wade, No. 1,” Biden said. “The most pernicious thing about the Texas law, it sort of creates a vigilante system … I know this sounds ridiculous, almost un-American, what we are talking about.”

“I respect people … who don’t support Roe v. Wade. I respect their views,” the president said. “I respect those who believe life begins at the moment of conception and all, I respect that. Don’t agree, but I respect that. Not going to impose that on people.”

The National Association of Christian Lawmakers has officially launched a nationwide push against abortion rights.

At its first annual policy conference last weekend, group members voted to make a controversial new Texas law, the “Texas Heartbeat Bill,” the organization’s first piece of model legislation, meaning that similar bills may soon pop up in state capitols across the country.

The model legislation, called the Heartbeat Model Act, was accepted unanimously by the executive committee during a Saturday meeting.

The Texas bill it is based upon, Senate Bill 8, bans abortions once a fetal heartbeat can be detected, which can occur as early as six weeks into a pregnancy. The legislation also allows for any state resident to bring a civil suit against a doctor who performs an abortion after a heartbeat is detectable. Under the law, a woman who has an abortion would be liable to civil suits, as would anyone who supported her in the act — from family members to the receptionist who checks her in at a clinic.

Not only is the doctor liable, but anyone found aiding and abetting,” said Texas legislator Bryan Hughes, the bill’s author, during the Saturday meeting, which was led by the organization’s founder and president, Arkansas state Sen. Jason Rapert.Texas state Rep. Bryan Hughes speaks during the opening session of the 2015 legislative session on Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2015, in Austin, Texas. Eric Gay, Associated Press

Speaking to the Deseret News on Monday, Rapert said the provision allowing residents to bring civil suits against anyone involved in an abortion is like “putting a SCUD missile on that heartbeat bill — they can’t stop it.”

Rapert was the author of a similar 2013 bill in Arkansas, portions of which were later struck down by a federal judge. At least a dozen states have implemented a variety of abortion restrictions in recent years, leading numerous observers to say that the landmark 1973 Supreme Court abortion ruling, Roe v. Wade, is under threat.

Critics of the legislation have likened the Texas law to putting “a bounty on the head” of anyone involved in an abortion; they have also called it “unconstitutional.” Last week, a group of providers filed a federal lawsuit in an attempt to derail the law, which is supposed to go into effect in September.

Speaking Saturday to the Christian legislators gathered in Dallas, Hughes reminded the legislators that the Heartbeat Model Act is just a starting point and that the legislation will have to be tailored to work within each state’s laws.A anti-abortion supporter argues with those who attended a press conference and rally held by the Planned Parenthood Action Council of Utah outside of the Capitol in Salt Lake City on Aug. 25, 2015. Stacie Scott, Deseret News

The National Association of Christian Lawmakers formed last year with three key goals: to offer conservative, Christian legislators networking opportunities,; to help lawmakers share bills that have been successful in their states so that legislators elsewhere might push through similar legislation; and to support Christians running for local, state or national office.

At the policy conference last week, the organization worked toward meeting these goals in various ways, including by approving the Heartbeat Model Act. The executive committee also passed a resolution supporting Israel’s “right to defend itself from terror attacks” and creating a standing American-Israeli Committee.

Speaking to the executive committee, Rabbi Leonid Feldman, who was born in the Soviet Union and was imprisoned there for his pro-Israel activities, remarked that the Jewish people “remember our friends.”

This conference and this organization will be remembered by the Jewish people,” he said.

The organization also approved a resolution in support of “election integrity.”

The executive committee also approved a second piece of model legislation: the National Motto Display Model Act. Based on bills passed in Arkansas in 2017 and this year in Texas, the legislation requires public schools to display the national motto “In God We Trust” when printed versions of the motto are donated to schools or copies of the national motto are bought with funds from private donors.

“As the Texas House sponsor of the Motto Act, I am proud to see a model put out by the NACL so that legislators from every other state can have a mechanism to ensure our citizens — especially our school-age children — are reminded of our nation’s motto,” said Tom Oliverson, a state representative from Texas and chairman of the National Association of Christian Lawmakers’ national legislative council.

During the executive committee’s meeting on Saturday, Rapert said Hobby Lobby would make frames available for a reduced price if they’ll be used for national motto displays.

Asked Monday what other pieces of legislation the organization might adopt as model legislation in the future, Rapert told the Deseret News that the National Association of Christian Lawmakers is already weighing some options.

Since religious freedom is central to the organization, it could end up adopting model legislation similar to bills promoted in Texas this year by Oliverson. He supported three measures designed to make it harder for the government to force church closures during public emergencies, like the COVID-19 pandemic, and a bill that would ensure homeowners’ associations can’t infringe on homeowners’ rights to display religious symbols.

I wanted to reach out to you because of some of the troubling moral issues coming out of your administration.

For many years the national press has taken a humanist point of view. Let me trace this back to 1981 when Francis Schaeffer made this observation about the press handling of the confirmation of Dr C. Everett Koop:

Now the window is open and we must take advantage of it in every way we can as citizens, as Christian citizens of the democracy in which we still have freedom. We must try to roll back the other total entity. It will not be easy to roll it back because those who hold the other total world view of reality have no intention that it will be rolled back. Those who hold this view are deeply entrenched, they have had their own way without opposition for a long time, and they will use every means to see that the momentum they have achieved, and the results they have brought forth in all fields, will be retained and enlarged.

For example, all you have to do is to consider the way the media treated Dr. C. Everett Koop. Dr. Koop is one of the foremost pediatric surgeons in the United States, and among other honors, he was given the highest honor of the French government for his pioneering work in pediatric surgery. But when he was nominated for the position of Surgeon General, he was attacked by the secular media with total disregard for objective reporting—and with total disregard for his brilliant humanitarian record as a surgeon. Those in the media holding the humanist world view could not tolerate Dr. Koop’s voice to be heard—they could not tolerate his articulate defense of the sanctity of human life to be expressed

After Tracking Trump ‘Falsehoods,’ Washington Post Says It Won’t Do the Same for Biden

Tony Perkins  @tperkins / January 22, 2021

The Washington Post, which went to extraordinary lengths to track former President Donald Trump’s veracity, is seemingly set to give his successor a pass. (Photo: Brendan Smialowski/Agence France-Presse/Getty Images)

COMMENTARY BY

Tony Perkins@tperkins

Tony Perkins is president of the Family Research Council.

The Washington Post will have a lot more time on its hands now that President Joe Biden has been sworn in. According to the paper’s spokesperson, it can call off its whole fact-checking operation.

Apparently, it’s not necessary now that its preferred party is in office.

The Daily Caller’s Shelby Talcott reached out to the Post after it published its final tally of “lies or misleading statements by Donald Trump.” The newspaper’s alleged total: 30,573. (Of course, considering the media’s inability to trade in facts themselves, no one will ever know how many of those Pinocchios are real.)

Now, regardless of Biden’s own issues with the truth, the Post says it has “no plans” to keep a Biden database of falsehoods “at this time.”

“The database of Trump claims was started a month after Trump became president as a way not to overwhelm our fact-checking enterprise,” the Post spokesperson said. Don’t worry, the paper insisted, we’ll still try to keep track of both parties’ statements.

But Biden, Talcott pointed out, has plenty of baggage when it comes to untruths. She pointed to a list of public embarrassments, dating as far back as 1987 when C-SPAN found footage of him lying about his graduating rank in law school. It was such a scandal that Biden had to drop out of the presidential race.

Then there were the stories that no one would confirm about Biden being arrested in South Africa when he said he was trying to visit Nelson Mandela in prison. The Washington Post’s own fact-checkers looked at that claim last year and called it “ridiculous.”

Before that, the Post had called him out for an account he shared about his trip to Afghanistan. “In the space of three minutes, Biden got the time period, the location, the heroic act, the type of medal, the military branch and the rank of the recipient wrong, as well as his own role in the ceremony,” the Post insisted.

Now, when the stakes are highest, Biden gets a free pass?

Does The Washington Post suddenly believe that facts are partisan? Ironically, this news about the fact-checkers broke on the same day as a new poll, showing that record numbers of Americans think the press is intentionally trying to deceive us.

If you were one of the only people on earth still giving the media the benefit of the doubt, this should make it clear: The press has an agenda—and protecting Democratic leaders is part of it.

John MacArthur gave a sermon in June of 2021 entitled “When Government Rewards Evil and Punishes Good” and in that sermon he makes the following points:

INTRODUCTION AND DISCUSSION OF ROMANS 13

GOVERNMENT CAN FORFEIT ITS AUTHORITY

THE WORLD IS THE ENEMY OF THE GOSPEL

ALL OF HUMAN HISTORY IS PROGRESSING TOWARD A GLOBAL KINGDOM UNDER THE POWER OF SATAN

ONE FALSE WORLD RELIGION IS FINAL PLAY BY SATAN

REAL PERSECUTION CAN ONLY BE DONE BY GOVERNMENT

PERSECUTION IN BOOK OF DANIEL

THE LAW IS KING AND NOT THE GOVERNOR OF CALIFORNIA

GOVERNMENT HAS BECOME PURVEYOR OF WICKEDNESS

THERE IS A PLACE FOR CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE

DOES GOVERNMENT WIN?

Let me just share a portion of that sermon with you and you can watch it on You Tube:

DOES GOVERNMENT WIN?

Satan persecutes the church through governments. But the Son of God has come to destroy the devil, to render him powerless, to overthrow Satan’s final kingdom of darkness. In conclusion, Romans 8:31, “If God be for us, who is against us?” Let’s pray.

Father, we are so grateful for the confidence that we have, borne to our souls from Your precious truth: Your Word. Thank You for these dear people. Thank You for their faithfulness, for their love for You, for the love wrought in their hearts, by You and thus for You. Thank You for the joy of fellowship. Give us such joy, as we understand that what’s coming is all going to be for Your glory.

Everything in history is unfolding in the plan that You have designed. Your purposes cannot be thwarted. You will triumph. Christ will come. He will destroy His enemies. He will destroy all kings and all rulers, and reign alone in His glorious kingdom, of which we who love Him will be a part. We long for that day. Until then may we celebrate with joy and thanksgiving that we even now are citizens of that kingdom; and we who know Him and love Him will reign with Him. We thank You for that promise.

May we never become discouraged by what’s happening in the world. May we understand that it’s exactly what Scripture says we would expect. Help us not to get caught up in the politics of these things, but rather to see them through the lens of Holy Scripture.

We know that the devil has a plan, but so do You; and You will triumph. You are triumphing even now at Grace Church, and we are basking in a preview of Your final triumph. We thank You for that sweet gift of grace. Bring to Yourself any with us today who don’t know Christ. Draw that soul into Your kingdom. For Your glory we pray. Amen.

Dear Mr.

It is very valuable information for Christians to have.

Today I want to respond to your letter to me on July 9, 2021. Here it is below:

Sincerely

Joe Biden

Biden Administration Uses Term ‘Birthing Person’ Instead of ‘Mother’

Tony Perkins  @tperkins / June 14, 2021

The Biden administration has decided to bleep out the word “mother” and replace it with “birthing people,” but struggles to explain the change. (Photo: Dougal Waters/Getty Images)

COMMENTARY BY

Tony Perkins@tperkins

Tony Perkins is president of the Family Research Council.

Joe Biden ran on an absurdly radical platform for a “moderate,” but it looks like he saved a lot of his truly crazy ideas for the White House. Just when Americans think his policies can’t get any more deranged, he unleashes a budget that cancels moms.

In a bizarre attempt to transgender the English language, Biden has decided to bleep out the word “mother” and replace it with “birthing people”—a demeaning term that reduces women to some sort of utilitarian breeding center in another effort to eradicate gender. And yet, when Biden’s wokest leaders have been asked to explain the change, they can’t or won’t.

In Wednesday’s Senate committee meeting, Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra struggled to field questions on why the word “mom” is being treated like the world’s newest profanity. When Sen. James Lankford, R-Okla., pressed him, “Can you help me get a good definition of ‘birthing people?’” the secretary fumbled awkwardly for an answer.

When Sen. Mike Braun, R-Ind., asked if he was part of omitting the Hyde Amendment from the Health and Human Services Department portion of the budget, the secretary smugly answered, “Remember, senator, that President Biden, before he became president, he said that he was against maintaining the Hyde Amendment. The budget is a reflection of what the president has said in the past … “

But it’s not a reflection of most Americans’ values, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., was careful to point out on the floor. He’s keeping his radical campaign promise, McConnell said, “[and] shrug[ing] off a commonsense precedent upheld by administrations of both parties for more than 40 years … ”

That decision “aligns him with an increasingly radical consensus among elected Democrats. But it puts him way out of step with the clear majority of Americans who oppose taxpayer-funded abortion. Mr. President,” McConnell said, “the administration’s budget request continues to make headlines for all the wrong reasons. But its plan to sell out on longstanding protections for the most vulnerable Americans might just be the lowest of the low.”

John MacArthur gave a sermon in June of 2021 entitled “When Government Rewards Evil and Punishes Good” and in that sermon he makes the following points:

INTRODUCTION AND DISCUSSION OF ROMANS 13

GOVERNMENT CAN FORFEIT ITS AUTHORITY

THE WORLD IS THE ENEMY OF THE GOSPEL

ALL OF HUMAN HISTORY IS PROGRESSING TOWARD A GLOBAL KINGDOM UNDER THE POWER OF SATAN

ONE FALSE WORLD RELIGION IS FINAL PLAY BY SATAN

REAL PERSECUTION CAN ONLY BE DONE BY GOVERNMENT

PERSECUTION IN BOOK OF DANIEL

THE LAW IS KING AND NOT THE GOVERNOR OF CALIFORNIA

GOVERNMENT HAS BECOME PURVEYOR OF WICKEDNESS

THERE IS A PLACE FOR CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE

DOES GOVERNMENT WIN?

Let me just share a portion of that sermon with you and you can watch it on You Tube:

[Cantrell:] “G. K. Chesterton once made this . . . observation: ‘It is only by believing in God that we can ever criticize the government. Once abolish God, and the government becomes . . . God . . . . Wherever the people do not believe in something beyond the [government], they will worship [it]. . . . They will worship the strongest thing in the world.’”

Francis Schaeffer in CHRISTIAN MANIFESTO noted:

For myself I think we should not rule out the courts, and especially the Supreme Court, as being such an elite for these reasons:

They are already ruling on the basis of sociological, arbitrary law.
They are making much law, as well as ruling on law.
They dominate the two other parts of government.

They rule on what the other two branches of government can and cannot do, and they usually go unchallenged. It has been said that in the last couple of years the Supreme Court has tended to defer to the other two branches of government. However, while one could hope this will set a trend toward self-restraint away from an “Imperial Court,” the figures suggest otherwise. In the first 195 years of the existence of the United States the Supreme Court voided only ninety-one acts of Congress—that is, considerably less than one every two years. In the last ten years it has voided fifteen acts of Congress—that is, an average of one and a half acts of Congress have been voided each year.

At the same time I would stress the fact that the main point is not trying to choose at this moment what the elite might be. Instead we must realize the possibility of such an elite if the masses do not get their “economic numbers.” As I write this there are strikes in Britain—partially, at least, because of the price of rectifying fifty or so years of flagrant economic spending. The United States has also had its fifty years of spending, and this presents a painful problem. Indeed, the political price for solving the problem may be too high to make any solution possible.

I hope the window does not close. I hope those with a humanistic world view who have increasingly controlled our culture for the last twenty, thirty, forty years, something like this, cannot close the open window with all their efforts. But if they do, if they take over with increased power and control, will we be so foolish as to think that religion and religious institutions will not be even further affected than they have been so far? I wonder how many of us are aware of the cases that the churches have faced in the last ten years in various places. The things that have been brought into courts of law should make our hair stand on end. Do you think that in such a case as I have portrayed (and may it not happen!) that the Christians and the Christian institutions will not be even further affected?

Robert L. Toms, an attorney-at-law, lists the issues pending this year and which are up for final adjudication during the coming decade before the United States’ courts, administrative bodies, executive departments, and legislatures:

1. Is a minister of the gospel liable for malpractice to a counselee for using spiritual guidance rather than psychological or medical techniques?

2. Can a Christian residence house in a college have the same standing as a fraternity and sorority house for purposes of off-campus residency rules?

3. Can Christian high school students assemble on the public school campus for religious discussion?

4. Can Christian teachers in public schools meet before class for prayer?

5. Can Christian college students meet in groups on the state university campus?

6. Can HEW require a Bible college to admit drug addicts and alcoholics as “handicapped persons”? …

7. Can a church build a religious school or a daycare center in an area zoned residential?

8. Can parents who send their children to religious schools not approved by a state board of education be prosecuted under the truancy laws?

9. Is an independent, wholly religious school entitled to an exemption from unemployment taxes as are church-owned schools?

10. Will the State enforce antiemployment discrimination laws against a church which in accordance with its stated religious beliefs fires a practicing homosexual staff member?

11. Can seminary trustees refuse to graduate a practicing homosexual?

12. Can a city continue its forty-year practice of having a nativity scene in front of the city hall?

13. Can zoning laws be used to prevent small group Bible studies from meeting in homes?

14. Can a court decide which doctrinal group in a church split gets the sanctuary?

15. Must a religious school accept as a teacher an otherwise qualified practicing homosexual?

16. Can a church be fined by a court for exuberant noise in worship?

17. Can a state department of health close a church-run juvenile home for policies that include spanking?

18. Can religious solicitation in public places be confined to official booths?

19. Is an unborn fetus a “person” and entitled to Constitutional protection?

20. Can the Ten Commandments be posted in a public classroom?

21. Can students in public education have a period of silent meditation and prayer?

22. Can Christmas carols be sung in public schools?

23. Must an employee who believes he should worship on Saturday be permitted a work holiday on that day in order to worship?

24. Can the graduation ceremony of a public high school be held in a church?

25. Can a State official seize a church on allegations of misconduct by dissident members and run the church through a court-appointed receiver?

26. Can the State set minimum standards for private religious school curricula?

27. Is religious tax exemption a right or privilege, and, if it is a privilege, are the exemptions an unwarranted support of religion by the State?

28. Should churches be taxed like any other part of society?

29. Can Federal labor laws be used to enforce collective bargaining rights and unionization in religious enterprises?

30. Can the State require a license before a religious ministry may solicit funds for its work?

31. Are hospitals, schools, counseling groups, halfway houses, famine-relief organizations, youth organizations, homes for unwed mothers, orphanages, etc., run with religious motivations or are they secular and subject to all controls secular organizations are subject to?

He [attorney Robert L. Toms] further says:

… two U.S. trial courts have recently ruled that a group of college students who wish to discuss religion could not meet in the context of a public state university, that religious speech must go on elsewhere since it might “establish religion” on the campus….The State must screen out religious speech from the otherwise free speech practiced on a university campus.

We might differ as to what the ruling should be in some of these cases, but that does not change the weight of the whole. It should be said that it is not only Protestants who are facing the implications of the above list, but Roman Catholics and Jews as well.

And for Christians who are in the habit of drifting complacently, a case presently before the courts should be a loud-sounding alarm bell. As I write, Samuel E. Ericsson, an attorney-at-law, is defending Grace Community Church, the largest Protestant church in Los Angeles County, in a clergyman malpractice suit. This suit was brought by parents because the pastors of that church cared for their son (who had later committed suicide) instead of turning him over to professional psychiatric and psychological care. Obviously if the church lost this case, all religions would be greatly affected. In fact, anyone who tried to help someone with questions or fears could be sued if he or she did not fall under the category of professional psychiatric and psychological competence. And to make matters more complicated, no one has thought how to set standards acceptably for professional psychiatric and psychological competence!

Samuel Ericsson has put the case in the proper perspective when in a letter to me dated May 1, 1981, he wrote: “I believe that clergyman malpractice, or more accurately spiritual counseling malpractice, is going to present the secular courts with a head-on clash between the two competing world views, secularism and Christianity.”

Should not all of us be thinking what to do about it if the window does shut? The Christian theologians, the educators, the lawyers, the evangelical leadership, have not had a very good record in the past of seeing things as a whole. That is, they have not seen the contrast between the consensus which is based on there being a Law Giver and what that naturally brings forth, and the totally different material-energy, chance world view of reality and what that naturally brings forth. Now if we have not run very well in the past with the footmen when it has been so very easy, I wonder what is going to happen to us if we have to run with the horsemen? What will protect us from what is happening in most of the world today? Have we run with the footmen? Very, very poorly. What happens if we must run with the horsemen?

Thank you so much for your time. I know how valuable it is. I also appreciate the fine family that you have and your commitment as a father and a husband. Now I wanted to make some comments concerning our shared Christian faith.  I  respect you for putting your faith in Christ for your eternal life. I am pleading to you on the basis of the Bible to please review your religious views concerning abortion. It was the Bible that caused the abolition movement of the 1800’s and it also was the basis for Martin Luther King’s movement for civil rights and it also is the basis for recognizing the unborn children.

Dear Mr.

It is very valuable information for Christians to have.

Today I want to respond to your letter to me on July 9, 2021. Here it is below:

Sincerely

Joe Biden

Over Legal Objections, Biden Moves to Reinstate Family Planning Funds for Abortion Providers

Melanie Israel  @Melanie_Israel / May 19, 2021

The Biden administration is seeking to roll back important provisions of the Trump administration’s 2019 “Protect Life” rule. COMMENTARY BY

Melanie Israel@Melanie_Israel

Melanie Israel is a policy analyst with the DeVos Center for Religion & Civil Society at The Heritage Foundation.

The public comment period closed Monday for a rule proposed by the Biden administration that would roll back important provisions of the Trump administration’s 2019 “Protect Life” rule.

At issue in the debate is the federal Title X family planning program. The law that established the program—Title X of the Public Health Service Act (1970)—says that no funds appropriated “shall be used in programs where abortion is a method of family planning.”

The Trump administration’s Protect Life rule required that grantees maintain strict physical and financial separation between Title X activity and abortion-related activity. In other words, a grantee couldn’t conduct Title X activity in one room and perform abortion with non-Title X resources in a room down the hall.

The Protect Life rule also ensured that Title X regulations are consistent with federal conscience rights laws by not requiring grantees to refer for, or counsel women to get, abortions.

During the Trump administration, Planned Parenthood refused to comply with the terms of the rule and walked away from $60 million in Title X funds.

Now, the Biden administration has proposed a rule to reverse the Trump administration’s pro-life policies and allow Title X activity to be conducted alongside abortion activity without strict physical and financial separation.

The rule would require grantees to refer for abortions, despite sincere moral or religious objections, effectively banning otherwise qualified pro-life grantees from participating.

The Heritage Foundation has long articulated the importance of conscience rights and opposed taxpayer dollars being entangled with abortion activity.

The Protect Life rule rightly required transparency and good stewardship of federal funds while protecting fundamental rights to life and conscience.

In response to the Biden administration’s proposal to gut those important protections, Heritage submitted public comment in opposition to the rule.

An abridged and lightly edited version of that comment follows:

The Law Requires a Wall of Separation Between Title X Activity and Abortion

The Biden administration’s proposed regulation guts the 2019 requirements that Title X regulations comply with the clear, unambiguous language of the Title X statute: “None of the funds appropriated under this subchapter shall be used in programs where abortion is a method of family planning.”

The statute has remained unchanged for more than 50 years, and appropriations legislation that provides funding for the Title X program reiterates this requirement, most recently in the Consolidated Appropriations Act 2021, which stipulates that funds appropriated for Title X “shall not be expended on abortion.”

The 1970 conference report for the legislation establishing the Title X program explains that funds are only to be used “to support preventive family-planning services, population research, infertility services, and other related medical, informational, and educational activities.”

The conferees have adopted the language contained in section 1008, which prohibits the use of such funds for abortion, in order to make clear this intent.

The 2019 regulation, a “materially indistinguishable version” of a regulation upheld by the Supreme Court in Rust v. Sullivan (1991), recognized Congress’ clear intent. In its opinion, the Supreme Court was clear that “the legislative history demonstrates that Congress intended that Title X funds be kept separate and distinct from abortion-related activates.”

Congressional intent is clear: Abortion is not family planning, and Congress intended for there to be a clear separation between abortion and Title X activity. The 2019 regulation rightly ensured compliance with the Title X statute by requiring clear physical and financial separation of Title X activity and abortion activity.

The proposed rule wrongly eliminates that important firewall.

Importance of Conscience Protections

The Biden administration’s proposed rule opens with an acknowledgement that Congress has, on multiple occasions, enacted statutes protecting conscience rights in the context of abortion. Such laws include the Weldon Amendment, which prohibits (among other things) discrimination on the basis that a health care entity does not refer for abortions.

However, the Biden administration’s proposed rule makes no such acknowledgement or mention of such civil rights in the proposed regulatory text, which states that projects must offer pregnant clients the opportunity to be provided with information about abortion.

Furthermore, the proposed regulatory text requires that projects provide abortion referral upon request.

The proposed rule is inconsistent with long-standing federal civil rights law protecting rights of conscience. While the Biden administration is entitled to take a position on abortion, it cannot force Title X projects to communicate a message that directly contradicts and undermines their beliefs (in addition to being against the plain text of the law).

If an otherwise qualified potential grantee decides that it cannot, in good conscience, agree to provide the information about abortion outlined in the regulation, and is precluded from applying for program funding, then the Department of Health and Human Services has deliberately limited the diversity of the pool of applicants that can be awarded grants.

Every day, thousands of Americans freely choose to seek health care at high-quality clinics that are not enmeshed with the abortion industry. The proposed rule would mean that those Americans would be unable to access Title X program activity at a site that aligns with their choices and personal values.

In Conclusion

Title X of the Public Health Service Act is clear: Funds may not “be used in programs where abortion is a method of family planning.” The Biden administration’s justification for allowing commingling of Title X programs and physical and financial resources related to abortion is woefully deficient.

Furthermore, the proposed rule contradicts long-standing civil rights law protecting rights of conscience.

The Trump administration’s 2019 Protect Life rule rightly sought to uphold what the law requires with respect to good stewardship of taxpayer dollars and freedom of conscience by preventing the government from compelling speech.

The Biden administration should not infringe upon fundamental freedoms by revising these important policies.

John MacArthur gave a sermon in June of 2021 entitled “When Government Rewards Evil and Punishes Good” and in that sermon he makes the following points:

INTRODUCTION AND DISCUSSION OF ROMANS 13

GOVERNMENT CAN FORFEIT ITS AUTHORITY

THE WORLD IS THE ENEMY OF THE GOSPEL

ALL OF HUMAN HISTORY IS PROGRESSING TOWARD A GLOBAL KINGDOM UNDER THE POWER OF SATAN

ONE FALSE WORLD RELIGION IS FINAL PLAY BY SATAN

REAL PERSECUTION CAN ONLY BE DONE BY GOVERNMENT

PERSECUTION IN BOOK OF DANIEL

THE LAW IS KING AND NOT THE GOVERNOR OF CALIFORNIA

GOVERNMENT HAS BECOME PURVEYOR OF WICKEDNESS

THERE IS A PLACE FOR CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE

DOES GOVERNMENT WIN?

Let me just share a portion of that sermon with you and you can watch it on You Tube:

In reality the greatest threat to this nation is the government, the government. And I want to show you how we are to understand that. Turn to Romans 13, Romans 13. Listen carefully to what the apostle Paul said: “Every person is to be in subjection to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God. Therefore whoever resists authority has opposed the ordinance of God; and they who have opposed will receive condemnation upon themselves. For rulers are not a cause of fear for good behavior, but for evil. Do you want to have no fear of authority? Do what is good and you will have praise from the same; for it is a minister of God to you for good. But if you do what is evil, be afraid; for it doesn’t bear the sword for nothing; for it is a minister of God, an avenger who brings wrath on the one who practices evil.” The role of the government is to restrain evil; and when it functions to restrain evil, it is fulfilling its God-ordained purpose.

Please notice in verses 1 and 2 that government is from God, by God, of God. It is designed as a necessary restraint in a world of sinners. Verses 3 and 4 tell us it is not a threat to those whose behavior is good, but evil. It is those who do evil who should be afraid, not those who do good. In fact it offers praise to those who do good, and brings wrath on those who do evil. And rulers actually, according to verse 6, are servants of God, devoted to that service.

This is God’s design for government. The problem is, when government ceases to function by God’s design, it yields up its authority. The same would be true in a family. God’s design is that the father lead the family. When the father leads in a destructive and evil way, he yields up the right to exercise that God-given authority.

And by the way just as a footnote, the man who wrote that, the apostle Paul, was in violation of the government more often than any other person in the entire New Testament. And when he went to preach the gospel, he was very often thrown in jail; and ultimately he was executed by the government that he refused to obey when it no longer functioned to protect good behavior and punish evil behavior.

Romans 13 in Context: Three Quotes to Better Understand God and Government

Francis Schaeffer on “The Limits of Civil Obedience”

Last, in A Christian Manifesto(1981), Francis Schaeffer writes the following about Romans 13 and the limits of civil obedience.

The civil government, as all of life, stands under the Law of God. In this fallen world God has given us certain offices to protect us from the chaos which is the natural result of that fallenness. But when any office commands that which is contrary to the Word of God, those who hold that office abrogate their authority and they are not to be obeyed. And that includes the state.

Schaeffer cites Romans 13:1–4 and continues,

God has ordained the state as delegated authority; it is not autonomous. The state is to be an agent of justice by punishing the wrongdoer, and to protect the good in society. When it does the reverse, it has no proper authority. It is then a usurped authority and as such it becomes lawless and is tyranny.

In 1 Peter 2:13-17 we read:

Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every authority instituted among men: whether to the king, as the supreme authority, or to governors, who are sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to commend those who do right. For it is God’s will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish men. Live as free men, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as servants of God. Show proper respect to everyone: Love the brotherhood of believers, fear God, honor the king.

Peter says here that civil authority is to be honored and that God is to be feared. The state, as he defines it, is to punish those who do wrong and commend those who do right. If this is not so, then the whole structure falls apart. Clearly, the state is to be a ministry of justice. This is the legitimate function of the state, and in this structure Christians are to obey the state as a matter of “‘conscience” (Romans 13:5).

But what is to be done when the state does that which violates its legitimate function? The early Christians died because they would not obey the state in a civil matter. People often say to us that the early church did not show any civil disobedience. They do not know church history. Why were the Christians in the Roman Empire thrown to the lions? From the Christian’s viewpoint it was for a religious reason. But from the viewpoint of the Roman State they were in civil disobedience, they were civil rebels.

The Roman State did not care what anybody believed religiously; you could believe anything, or you could be an atheist. But you had to worship Caesar as a sign of your loyalty to the state. The Christians said they would not worship Caesar, anybody, or anything, but the living God. Thus to the Roman Empire they were rebels, and it was civil disobedience. That is why they were thrown to the lions. . . .

The bottom line is that at a certain point there is not only the right, but the duty, to disobey the state. (A Christian Manifesto, in The Complete Works of Francis Schaeffer, 5:468–69)

Proving this point from Church history (pp. 469–73), Schaeffer lists examples of Christian resistance from the Reformation in countries like the Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Switzerland, Geneva, Scotland, Hungary, France, Spain, and Scotland again. Focusing his attention on Samuel Rutherford, and his work of Protestant political resistance, Lex, Rex (trans. The Law and the Prince), Schaeffer concludes with Rutherford’s reading of Romans 13. He writes,

Romans 13 indicates that all power is from God and that government is ordained and instituted by God. The state, however, is to be administered according to the principles of God‘s Law. Acts of the state which contradicted God‘s Law were illegitimate and acts of tyranny. Tyranny was defined as ruling without the sanction of God. (473–74)

Moving from this definition of tyranny, Schaeffer explains how, according to Rutherford, “tyrannical government is always immortal,” and thus Christians must always be on guard. Summarizing Rutherford, Schaeffer gives incisive instruction for what Romans 13 means in the context of wicked rulers.

First, since tyranny is satanic, not to resist it is to resist God—to resist tyranny is to honor God. Second, since the ruler is granted power conditionally, it follows that the people have the power to withdraw their sanction if the proper conditions are not fulfilled. The civil magistrate is a “fiduciary figure’”—that is, he holds his authority in trust for the people. Violation of the trust gives the people a legitimate base for resistance.

It follows from Rutherford’s thesis that citizens have a moral obligation to resist unjust and tyrannical government. While we must always be subject to the office of the magistrate, we are not to be subject to the man in that office who commands that which is contrary to the Bible. . . . A ruler, he wrote, should not be deposed merely because he commits a single breach of the compact he has with the people. Only when the magistrate acts in such a way that the governing structure of the country is being destroyed—that is, when he is attacking the fundamental structure of society—is he to be relieved of his power and authority. (474, emphasis mine)

This is a crucial distinction and one that we will consider as we conclude this blogpost.

Obedience Always and Sometimes Resistance

As Schaeffer notes, we must not charge rulers of tyranny when they do things we don’t like or when they commit a single breach of trust, Rather, resistance to tyrants applies when the governing authorities are destroying the fabric of society itself in a serially and ongoing way. In his final estimation, Schaeffer believed this was already happening in America in 1981.

For us today, we need to keep our eyes open to what is happening in our country, our states, and local municipalities. The above quotations help us to see what Romans 13 means and how it calls for submission to governing authorities and measured resistance which obeys Romans 12:21: “Do not be overcome with evil, but overcome evil with good.” This certainly applies to interpersonal relations, but it also applies to our interaction with the state.

As Schreiner, Sunshine, and Schaeffer remind us, when governing authorities act wickedly, Christians should respond in prayer, petition, and political action to oppose those who legislate evil and oppose good. The reason for this is not because Christians are trying to establish Christ’s kingdom in this fallen world. Instead, it is because in this fallen world, disciples of Christ believe Christ has authority over all things, including government, and because governments that honor God’s definition of good and evil are the best places for the gospel and churches to go forward. In this way, political engagement is not a “gospel issue.” The gospel will go forward with or without government support. But in places where freedom of religion is practiced, individuals are in the best place to receive the gospel—without coercion or fear.

Again, Romans 13 positively teaches that submission is our basic posture to governing authorities, but it is not, and has never been, the only posture of faithful Christians. Wise Christians know this and they also know that Romans 13 does not deny political resistance. Instead, Paul’s words call us to bless our neighbors with our presence, and to count the cost in moments when in obedience to God we stand up to tyrants.

For more on the subject of political resistance, read Sunshine’s book. You can also get a taste of how Romans 13 informs us today in my Sunday sermon. In all, we need to be aware of how governing authorities are (mis)using their powers today and why Christians should care about that and how Scripture teaches us to respond.

Scripture is not silent on matters of God and Government. And faithful disciples will grow up in Christ as they let the whole counsel of Scripture inform their views of the world, including all matters pertaining to government.

Soli Deo Gloria, ds

Thank you so much for your time. I know how valuable it is. I also appreciate the fine family that you have and your commitment as a father and a husband. Now I wanted to make some comments concerning our shared Christian faith.  I  respect you for putting your faith in Christ for your eternal life. I am pleading to you on the basis of the Bible to please review your religious views concerning abortion. It was the Bible that caused the abolition movement of the 1800’s and it also was the basis for Martin Luther King’s movement for civil rights and it also is the basis for recognizing the unborn children.

Sincerely,
