This crucial series is narrated by the late Dr. Francis Schaeffer and former Surgeon General Dr. C. Everett Koop. Today, choices are being made that undermine human rights at their most basic level. Practices once considered unthinkable are now acceptable – abortion, infanticide and euthanasia. The destruction of human life, young and old, is being sanctioned on an ever-increasing scale by the medical profession, by the courts, by parents and by silent Christians. The five episodes in this series examine the sanctity of life as a social, moral and spiritual issue which the Christian must not ignore. The conclusion presents the Christian alternative as the only real solution to man’s problems.

I have gone back and forth and back and forth with many liberals on the Arkansas Times Blog on many issues such as abortion, human rights, welfare, poverty, gun control  and issues dealing with popular culture. Here is another exchange I had with them a while back. My username at the Ark Times Blog is Saline Republican.

On 2-21-13 on the Arkansas Times Blog  I asserted: 

“Stephen Anthony Lafferty brought up the subject of selfishness. That reminds me of a story about Hillary Clinton, who I admit probably will be our next president. I got this off of Doug Lawrence’s blog:

Hillary Clinton’s encounter with Mother Teresa began, it just so happens, at the National Prayer Breakfast, way back in 1994. That year, the keynoter was a special guest: Mother Teresa. Nearly 3,000 packed a huge room. Near the dais were the president and first lady—the Clintons…Mother Teresa next spoke of love, of selfishness, of a lack of love for the unborn—and a lack of want of the unborn because of selfishness. Then, the gentle sister made this elite group uncomfortable: “But I feel that the greatest destroyer of peace today is abortion, because Jesus said, ‘If you receive a little child, you receive me.’ So every abortion is the denial of receiving Jesus.”

On 2-21-13 on the Arkansas Times Blog  the liberal Elwood responded, “Again, Saline, when should child support payments begin?”

On 2-21-13 on the Arkansas Times Blog  the liberal Amy Benton Bradley-Hole observed:

Since when does what Mother Teresa said about abortion have any bearing on U.S. abortion laws? Did someone abolish our state government overnight and establish the Catholic Church of Arkansas parochial junta? Or are we still a place where religious beliefs aren’t forced on people by the government?

Wait, don’t answer that. This is the Bible belt, after all.

Look, I’m a pretty hard core Christian. And I admire many of Mother Teresa’s qualities. But when it comes to discussions of government and science (Anybody in the legislature remember what science is? Apparently not.), I would never bring up my religious beliefs. BECAUSE MY RELIGIOUS BELIEFS HAVE NO PLACE IN GOVERNMENT, AND NO BEARING ON SCIENTIFIC FACTS.

Why is that so #*^$ing hard to understand?

On 2-21-13 on the Arkansas Times Blog  I asserted: 

Elwood you suggest if prolife people are not willing to pay for poor people’s unwanted babies’ needs then we are not part of the answer.

Hank Hanegraaff noted:

Attacking people rather than arguing principles, ad hominem arguments are a trick designed to distract attention from the real issue — namely, that abortion is the killing of an innocent human being. Comedienne Whoopi Goldberg used this tactic when she suggested that abortion rights advocates would take pro-lifers more seriously if they were willing to adopt babies slated for abortion.
What this ad hominem argument is really saying is, “If you won’t adopt my babies, don’t tell me I can’t kill them!” That, of course, makes as much sense as forbidding me from intervening when I see my neighbor physically abusing a child unless I am willing to adopt that child.

The “adoption argument” completely evades the basic morality or immorality of abortion. Instead, it is an attempt to attack character in order to avoid the case against abortion.

Francis Schaeffer saw the issues that our society would be facing in the future because of humanism and he was right on just about everything. Take a look at some of his quotes below: (By the way one of my favorite quotes is the first one listed below.)

On 2-25-13 we lost a great man when we lost Dr. C. Everett Koop. I have written over and over the last few years quoting Dr. C. Everett Koop and his good friend Francis Schaeffer. They both came together for the first time in 1973 when Dr. Koop operated on Schaeffer’s daughter and as a result they became close friends. That led to their involvement together in the book and film series “WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE HUMAN RACE?” in 1979.

In the film series “WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE HUMAN RACE?” the arguments are presented  against abortion (Episode 1),  infanticide (Episode 2),   euthenasia (Episode 3), and then there is a discussion of the Christian versus Humanist worldview concerning the issue of “the basis for human dignity” in Episode 4 and then in the last episode a close look at the truth claims of the Bible.

In this 1979 film series they dealt with the big social issues and predicted what social problems we have in the future because of humanism. For instance, they knew that the Jack Kevorkians of the world would be coming down the pike. They predicted that there was a slippery slope from abortion to infanticide to youth euthanasia brought on by the materialistic worldview.

C. Everett Koop

The death of Dr. C. Everett Koop at his home in New Hampshire yesterday marked the loss not only of a public Christian of note, but one of Evangelicalism’s most signifiicant leaders in the battle to uphold the sanctity of human life.The Roman Catholic pro-life movement had its legion of stalwarts in the seventies and early eighties: Joe Scheidler, Mother Theresa, Father Paul Quay, Archbishop O’Connor; the list is impressive. And Evangelicalism? Who were her pro-life leaders? There literally weren’t any, at least initially. But then God brought Everett Koop and Francis Schaeffer together and the battle was joined from the Protestant side. It’s not an exaggeration to say that Dr. Koop and Francis Schaeffer were the twin fathers of the modern Evangelical pro-life movement.So we praise God for the life and witness of Dr. Koop. He was there when almost no one else was. Some in the Christian Medical Society may lionize Dr. Koop at his death, but they will perhaps have forgotten Dr. Koop’s disgusted resignation from an organization he helped found for its refusal to take an officially pro-life position–a stance he maintained even after Tim’s and my father assumed its presidency for a few years in the early 80s. Despite their friendship, Dr. Koop refused Dad’s request that he rejoin. Even after passage of a clear and forceful pro-life stance, he initially refused to rejoin an organization that, as he saw it, had been cowardly on the central moral issue of the day.Dr. Koop’s life took a number of unexpected twists and turns after he became surgeon general during the Reagan administration. Who would have thought that Dr. Koop would become a darling of the AIDS advocacy movement? Yet he remained a stalwart in opposing our nation”s culture of death until the end. He ran the race well, and for his life Tim and I praise God.Dr. Koop was a friend to the Bayly family over many years. Having operated on our brothers Johnny and Nathan at birth, it was Dr. Koop who urged Mud to trust God to provide Nathan with a long and lung-impairment free life despite being born with cystic fibrosis. Indeed, Nate did survive to adulthood, becoming a pastor and father before dying from cancer a decade ago at the age of 39.I remember showing Dr. Koop my chemistry kit once when he was visiting in Bartlett in the early 70s. My methodology was to throw chemicals in a test tube and hope for an explosion–or at least a little smoke. It never happened. But Dr. Koop’s disgust with my methods came as a surprise to me. That’s not the scientific way, he scolded. You have to keep notes and have a hypothesis. You should record your results. You’re just playing like a child, he said. Well, I was discouraged until a week later when I received a package in the mail filled with slides, each labeled by Dr. Koop, containing samples of various cells, including blood and cancer varieties. I’ve still got  those slides somewere.

An Evangelical father has departed. We will miss him.

I have written on the Book of Ecclesiastes and the subject of the meaning of our lives on several occasions on this blog. In this series on Ecclesiastes I hope to show how secular humanist man can not hope to find a lasting meaning to his life in a closed system without bringing God back into the picture. This is the same exact case with Solomon in the Book of Ecclesiastes. Three thousand years ago, Solomon took a look at life “under the sun” in his book of Ecclesiastes. Christian scholar Ravi Zacharias has noted, “The key to understanding the Book of Ecclesiastes is the term ‘under the sun.’ What that literally means is you lock God out of a closed system, and you are left with only this world of time plus chance plus matter.”

Let me show you some inescapable conclusions if you choose to live without God in the picture. Solomon came to these same conclusions when he looked at life “under the sun.”

  1. Death is the great equalizer (Eccl 3:20, “All go to the same place; all come from dust, and to dust all return.”)
  2. Chance and time have determined the past, and they will determine the future.  (Ecclesiastes 9:11-13)
  3. Power reigns in this life, and the scales are not balanced(Eccl 4:1)
  4. Nothing in life gives true satisfaction without God including knowledge (1:16-18), ladies and liquor (2:1-3, 8, 10, 11), and great building projects (2:4-6, 18-20).

You can only find a lasting meaning to your life by looking above the sun and bring God back into the picture.

PLEASURE UNDER THE SUN

King Solomon, however, loved many foreign women
He had seven hundred wives of royal birth
and three hundred concubines,
and his wives led him astray

Types of Pleasure
1. Comedy (Ecclesiastes 2:2)
2. Wining & Dining (Ecclesiastes 2:3)
3. Pet Projects (Ecclesiastes 2:4-6)
4. Accumulation (Ecclesiastes 2:7-8a)
5. Entertainment (Ecclesiastes 2:8b)

I denied myself nothing my eyes desired; I refused my heart no pleasure. My heart took delight in all my work, and this was the reward for all my labor. Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done and what I had toiled to achieve, everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind; nothing was gained under the sun.

Solomon’s Teaching on Pleasure
1. Pleasure can be found in wickedness (Proverbs 10:23a)
2. Maturity level determines our amusements (Proverbs 10:23b, 18:2)
3. Pleasure must be kept in moderation (Proverbs 21:17)
4. Too much of a good thing is a bad thing (Proverbs 21:17)
5. A fool makes pleasure his purpose (Ecclesiastes 7:4)

New Testament Teaching on Pleasure
1. Pleasures can choke our maturity (Luke 8:14)
2. Living for pleasure isn’t living at all (1 Tim. 5:6)
3. Last days will be marked by love for pleasure (2 Tim. 3:4)
4. Pleasures can enslave you (Titus 3:3)
5. The pleasures of sin last only a moment (Hebrews 11:25)
6. If pleasure is the primary goal, prayer won’t work (James 4:3)

1. Anything that refreshes you w/o distracting you from your final goal is a legitimate pleasure
2. Any pleasure that jeopardizes the sacred life of another is an illegitimate pleasure
3. Any pleasure, however good, if not kept in balance will distort reality or destroy appetite

Dear colleagues, dear friends,

(1) It is a great honor for me to be asked to say a few words to this distinguished and very knowledgeable audience about one of our greatest heroes, about one of the past Mont Pelerin Society presidents, about a friend of many of us, Milton Friedman. This is the first MPS General Meeting after his passing away in December 2006 and it is our duty to remember him here today and to say very clearly, loudly and explicitly how much we all owe him.

I am not sure I deserve to be privileged to speak on this very special occasion. Even though I met Milton many times in many places of the world in the past 19 years, I was not his long time colleague, collaborator or a close personal friend. I was probably chosen to speak here on behalf of his admirers and pupils. I am proud to declare that I am one of them.

My first opportunity to see him and exchange a few words with him was during the Munich meeting of our Society in 1990. For most of my life, which was spent in the communist era, I was just able to read about him and – what was much more important – to read him. Very early, he became one of my most important teachers – of course, at a distance. I considered and I do consider him, and I suppose most of you share my view, to be one of the greatest thinkers of the 20th century.

As I said, I succeeded in meeting him personally for the first time after the collapse of communism, after the fall of the Iron Curtain, after those historic events he – directly or indirectly – but very substantially influenced. For us, who lived in the communist world, Milton was the greatest champion of freedom, of limited and unobtrusive government and of free markets. (2)

He was for many reasons important for the people in the West, North and South, but he was crucial for us in the East. We studied him very carefully. It was, of course, difficult to get his „Capitalism and Freedom“. It was not easy to see his Newsweek columns, but it was possible to get The Journal of Political Economy, The American Economic Review or the Journal of Money, Credit and Banking in the public library even in the darkest communist days. Some of us read such journals and some of us even understood that his contributions were more important than the writings of most of other economists. (3)

He was – without a doubt – one of the most influential academic economists of the second half of the 20th century. We certainly do not plan to analyze his achievements in economic theory here today but we should at least mention his theoretical works in the fields of the theory of money, of the theory of the consumption function, his arguments for flexible exchange rates and for free trade, his ideas on the methodology of science and his views on economic, especially monetary policy. His more general texts about freedom, about the relationship between the individual and the state, about markets and planning, about alternative economic systems were not less fundamental. The books „Capitalism and Freedom“ and „Free to Choose“ influenced millions of people all over the world.

We all admired him for the clarity of his thinking as well as for his intellectual stubbornness and – at the same time – for his personal kindness and charm. Nothing captures or summarizes his life better than the title of the book he wrote together with Rose: „Two Lucky People“. From what I know, I can confirm that they were lucky, that they were lucky together and I would add that we were lucky to have had Milton Friedman. Some of us were even privileged to know him personally, to play tennis with him or skiing together in Whistler mountains. We are really missing him. We all owe a lasting debt to him.

The 45 minute video above is from the film series created from Francis Schaeffer’s book “Whatever Happened to the Human Race?” with Dr. C. Everett Koop. This book  really helped develop my political views concerning abortion, infanticide, and youth euthanasia, and it gave me a good understanding of those issues.
I was able to watch Francis Schaeffer deliver a speech on a book he wrote called “A Christian Manifesto” and I heard him in several interviews on it in 1981 and 1982. I listened with great interest since I also read that book over and over again. Below is a portion of one of Schaeffer’s talks  on a crucial subject that is very important today too.

Minority groups could have their rights stripped away if we are ruled by 51% vote instead of the rule of law

I want to say something tonight. Not many of you are black in this audience. I can’t tell if you are Puerto Rican. But if I were in the minority group in this country, tonight, I would be afraid. I’ve had big gorgeous blacks stand up in our seminars and ask, “Sir, do you think there is a racial twist to all this?” And I have to say, “Right on! You’ve hit it right on the head!” Once this door is opened, there is something to be afraid of. Christians should be deeply concerned, and I cannot understand why the liberal lawyer of the Civil Liberties Union is not scared to death by this open door towards human life. Everyone ought to be frightened who knows anything about history — anything about the history of law, anything about the history of medicine. This is a terrifying door that is open.
Abortion itself would be worth spending much of our lifetimes to fight against, because it is the killing of human life, but it’s only a symptom of the total. What we are facing is Humanism: Man, the measure of all things — viewing final reality being only material or energy shaped by chance — therefore, human life having no intrinsic value — therefore, the keeping of any individual life or any groups of human life, being purely an arbitrary choice by society at the given moment.
The flood doors are wide open. I fear both they, and too often the Christians, do not have just relativistic values (because, unhappily, Christians can live with relativistic values) but, I fear, that often such people as the liberal lawyers of the Civil Liberties Union and Christians, are just plain stupid in regard to the lessons of history. Nobody who knows his history could fail to be shaken at the corner we have turned in our culture. Remember why: because of the shift in the concept of the basic reality!

From the beginning, the battle for gun rights was structured as a three-step process. Step 1: Determine the meaning of the Second Amendment. That was accomplished by the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in District of Columbia v. Heller, which affirmed that the Second Amendment secures an individual right to bear arms, in part for self-defense. Step 2: Determine where the Second Amendment applies. That was accomplished by the Court’s decision in McDonald v. Chicago, which affirmed that the amendment covers every state and locality—not just federal enclaves such as Washington. Step 3: Determine the scope and limitations of Second Amendment rights. That’s the next major task.

As co-counsel to Dick Anthony Heller, I was a vigorous advocate for the right to possess firearms for self-defense. But I understand, as does every rational individual, that the right is not absolute. The Second Amendment does not guarantee a 12-year-old’s right to possess a machine gun in front of the White House when the president is walking on the lawn. Some persons, some weapons and some circumstances may be regulated. Subsequent cases will have to flesh out the details. But the Constitution does not foreclose common sense and the right to bear arms does not foreclose public safety. Reasonable persons should be able to fashion reasonable restrictions—a framework for gun control in the aftermath of Newtown—without violating core Second Amendment rights.

Here is the key principle: Both Heller and McDonald corroborated that the right to bear arms is “fundamental”; i.e., it is implicit in the concept of ordered liberty and deeply rooted in our nation’s traditions and culture. Consequently, the Constitution establishes a presumption of individual liberty. That means government bears a heavy burden to justify any regulations that would compromise the right.

With that principle in mind, let’s examine several proposed restrictions that are currently front and center.

Banning high-capacity magazines. Gun rights advocates posit a Korean shop-owner in the Watts riots needing multiple rounds to protect his store and family. But others cite multiple-victim killings like in Newtown where innocent lives might have been saved if high capacity magazines had been effectively banned.

Firearms experts note that murderers can easily load a second or third magazine in a matter of seconds. Accordingly, limiting magazine size to, say, 10 rounds will not have much practical effect. Perhaps so; but that would also mean individuals trying to defend themselves would not be seriously hampered by a 10-round limit. They too could reload very rapidly.

If regulators can show that the benefits of banning high-capacity magazines exceed the costs, I have little doubt that such a ban would survive a Second Amendment court challenge. But there are three related problems: First, magazines are simple metal boxes with a spring. They can be made in a well-equipped machine shop. Second, there is no way to confiscate the millions of high-capacity magazines now in circulation. Third, millions of existing semi-automatic pistols come with 12-19-round magazines; thus a ban on any size below 20 rounds would encounter great resistance.

Re-enacting an assault weapons ban. Evaluation of an assault weapons ban, like that of a magazine ban, should be based on empirical evidence. After the 1994 ban expired in 2004, the New York Times reported: “Despite dire predictions that the streets would be awash in military-style guns, expiration of the assault weapons ban has not set off a sustained surge in sales [or] caused any noticeable increase in gun crime.” Millions of so-called assault weapons are now used by millions of Americans for hunting, self-defense, target shooting, even Olympic competition. Criminals typically use handguns; assault weapons are expensive and difficult to conceal.

In Washington, where the Heller case was litigated, the city experienced 46 violent crimes per day, each and every day for an entire year, nearly two decades after D.C. enacted an outright ban on all functional firearms for all people in all places at all times. The D.C. government insisted that gun smuggling—mostly from Virginia, where regulations were lenient—was the root of the problem. Not likely. Consider island nations that do not have to deal with cross-border smuggling, such as Ireland, the United Kingdom, and Jamaica. All three of them imposed bans but saw violent crime increase.

Cross-country comparisons can be misleading because there are so many differences that affect crime rates. That’s why it’s instructive to look at data serially, over time, and analyze what happened in each country before and after gun controls are enacted.

Jamaica is particularly revealing. Beginning in 1974, handguns were virtually banned. You could get them with a license, but you had to prove need, and licenses were almost never issued. Since the ban, the murder rate has soared to become one of the highest in the world—now more than double other Caribbean nations, six times higher than before the ban, and a dozen times the U.S. rate. Naturally, the ban is not wholly to blame, but it certainly did not help.

Moreover, even if we were to reenact the assault weapons ban, how could we deal with the millions of such guns already owned? Some people think a voluntary buy-back program would work. But it would be costly. And who might the sellers be? They would be individuals who valued the money more than the firearm. That would include low-income persons living in high-crime areas who obey the law but need a means to defend themselves. And who would keep the weapons? They would be individuals who valued the firearm more than the money. That would include criminals, terrorists and mentally deranged persons who are not motivated by financial incentives.

In the Heller case, Justice Antonin Scalia suggested that the Second Amendment would pose no barrier to outlawing weapons that are not in common use and especially dangerous. Clearly, some weapons can be banned. Essentially, automatic weapons have been banned since 1934; and they remain banned. The task is to identify those firearms or attachments that are not commonly used or needed for self-defense, and would improve public safety if they were banned. The 1994 Assault Weapons Ban went too far; but a better-crafted, limited version might be warranted.

Banning popular semi-automatic rifles, merely because they come equipped with a pistol grip or some other attachment that has no effect on their lethality, makes no sense whatsoever. FBI data for 2011 indicate that almost 13,000 people were murdered with a weapon. Of those, 1,700 were killed with knives; almost 500 with hammers, bats, and clubs; and 728 by someone’s bare hands. Only 323 people were killed with rifles of all types.

Background checks for private sales at gun shows. Gun control advocates occasionally misuse the phrase “close the gun-show loophole” to urge that all private sales be subject to background checks. Two clarifications: First, sensible proposals to extend background checks would not reach all private sales, but only those at gun shows. Second, most sales at gun shows are through licensed dealers that already have to conduct such checks.

Survey data indicate that less than 2 percent of guns used by criminals are bought at gun shows and flea markets—and that includes sales through licensed dealers. Still, the New York Times editorializes that background checks “prevented nearly two million gun sales” over a 15-year period. Of course, that’s ridiculous; there is no way for the Times to determine how many sales did not happen. Violence-prone buyers who do not pass the background check go elsewhere for their purchases.

Here are the figures for a recent year: The National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) denied 79,000 would-be buyers. Of those, 105 were prosecuted and 43 were convicted. That’s a conviction rate of 5/100ths of one percent. Either the remaining denials were false positives – legitimate purchases unjustly blocked by NICS – or, if the denials were proper, then 99.95 percent of the 79,000 rejected applicants escaped punishment. Neither conclusion offers much hope for an expanded system of background checks.

Further, the claim that background checks take just a few minutes to process on the telephone is disingenuous at best. A significant number of checks last 72 hours, and most gun shows are two-day events. The intent of requiring checks for private sales may be to drive gun shows out of business. Indeed, existing delays and the large number of false positives have reduced gun shows by about 14 percent. Some say that’s a good thing. But they know that a law banning gun shows would not pass constitutional muster; so they try to accomplish the same thing through the backdoor.

Remember, the “I” in NICS stands for “Instant.” If technology were to facilitate truly speedy background checks – say, 24 hours maximum—without unreasonably intruding on privacy rights, I would have no objection to extending NICS to cover private sales at gun shows—not because I am convinced that expanded background checks would curb violence, but because it would get us past this particular debate and let us concentrate on options that might be more productive.

Drug legalization. The single most effective option—which is not being discussed at all—would result in a huge reduction of gun violence: Legalize drugs. There are 1.5 million drug arrests each year, and more persons incarcerated for drug infractions than for all violent crimes combined. Fifty percent of our federal prison population comprises narcotics violators. Most important, because drugs are illegal, participants in the drug trade cannot go to court to settle disputes and enforce contracts. As a result, disputes are resolved by force. Meanwhile, the Drug Enforcement Administration has 10,000 agents, analysts, and support staff, who could be fighting terrorism or real crime—including gun violence.

Mental illness. A second step is earlier detection and treatment of mental illness. I do not pretend to be an expert on mental health, so I am not prepared to offer specifics. But I do believe that early detection and treatment can be a legitimate function of government. It’s part of a state’s police power to protect residents against rights-violating activities, such as the criminal use of firearms.

There are, however, three corollaries: First, government funding should be limited to those mental illnesses that could cause harm to innocent bystanders. It is not the government’s role to pay for private medical care unless third-party rights are involved. Second, federal funding is not constitutionally authorized. This is a state matter—an application of the state’s police power, which the federal government does not possess. Third, to the extent that government peruses medical records and may even prescribe involuntary treatment, there are serious civil liberties implications that must be confronted.

Armed guards. Another alternative—suggested by the National Rifle Association—is armed guards at schools. In the United States, there are approximately 100,000 public schools, so staffing should not be prohibitively expensive. About 28 percent of those schools already employ security officers who carry firearms. For the remaining schools, retired police and military personnel would be obvious recruits. The focus should be on entrance security, which reduces manpower requirements.

It’s true that an armed guard did not prevent Columbine; but neither did the ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines then in effect. Moreover, the rules of engagement, which have since been changed, told the armed guard at Columbine to wait for SWAT team backup. No wonder the guard did not stop the carnage; although he did delay the killers, which gave some students time to escape.

About two-thirds of public schools are elementary schools, thus educators and parents would have to assess if young children could be psychologically stressed by the presence of armed guards. Assuming that problem can be addressed, the idea has considerable merit—and its implementation would have an immediate impact. Gun-free school zones have been a magnet for the mentally deranged. We have armed guards in banks, airports, power plants, courts, stadiums, government buildings, and on planes. There is no reason why armed guards at all public schools—not just 28 percent of them—should not be considered.

In fact, it might even be desirable to extend the program—on a strictly volunteer basis—to teachers and principals. They would require extensive background screening and psychological testing, as well as classroom and practical training—roughly equivalent to what sky marshals now get. The teachers and principals wouldn’t necessarily carry firearms, but the weapons would be accessible—subject, of course, to proper safe-storage regulations.

In the Aurora, Colo., shooting, seven theatres showing the Batman premier were within a 20-minute drive of the suspect’s apartment. Researcher John Lott reports that the killer did not pick the closest theatre or the largest theatre. He picked the only one of the seven that banned concealed weapons. With just two exceptions, every public mass shooting in this country over the past 60 years has taken place where citizens are banned from carrying guns. The same pattern is true in Europe, where three of the worst six school shootings occurred despite strict gun regulations.

The Israelis have learned that police and soldiers cannot protect all of the terrorist targets all the time. In exceptionally dangerous locations, licensed and trained citizens, including teachers, are armed with concealed weapons. An added benefit is that killers do not know whom to attack first.

That said, in urging armed guards at schools, the NRA’s Wayne LaPierre got it wrong on two counts: First, a government mandate for armed guards should not be imposed on all schools—especially not private schools, which should adopt whatever security measures they deem appropriate, with liability only for unreasonable negligence. Fully informed parents who do not like the security arrangements are free to send their children elsewhere.

Second, Congress has no role to play in funding armed school guards. Like mental health treatment, this is a police power function that is constitutionally reserved to the states. Security that may be necessary in the inner city of Detroit is likely to be quite different than what’s needed in the hills of Montana. Each state or locality should decide for itself, and foot its own bill. When the feds pay the piper, the feds end up calling the tune.

Our framers intended that the states serve as experimental laboratories. Residents who disapprove can vote with their feet. Even the indisputably anti-gun Washington Post editorialized: Armed guards are “not unreasonable where local schools feel they need [them].”

Cautionary comments. In the aftermath of the horrific and heart-rending tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary, our gun laws should and will be re-evaluated. But the process must be measured and dispassionate. And before we embark on a crusade for new controls, let’s remember a few facts:

First, random multi-victim killings are a fraction of 1 percent of all murders in the United States. Regrettably, they will occur even where stringent gun controls are imposed. In Norway, with tight controls and licensing, Anders Breivik gunned down 69 people. Here in the United States, our worst incident killed 38 elementary school children in Michigan. The weapon of choice was bombs, not guns. From a historical perspective, U.S. gun controls from 2000 to date have been relatively restrictive. Part of that time, we had a ban on assault weapons. The entire time, we had background checks. Nonetheless, random mass killings occurred three times more often since 2000 than over the decade of the ’80s, when gun controls were weaker.

Second, the evidentiary debate in peer-reviewed journals centers on the question of whether gun laws such as right-to-carry reduce violent crime or have no significant effect. Despite dozens of studies, no reliable evidence indicates that such laws increase crime. The two most exhaustive studies on gun control were conducted by the National Academy of Sciences and the Centers for Disease Control. Neither agency could be accused of favoring the gun lobby. In 2004, the National Academy reviewed 253 journal articles, 99 books and 43 government publications evaluating 80 gun-control measures. Researchers could not identify a single gun-control regulation that meaningfully reduced violent crime, suicide, or accidents. In 2003, the CDC reported on ammunition limits, restrictions on purchase, waiting periods, registration, licensing, child access prevention and zero-tolerance laws. Conclusion: None of the laws demonstrably reduced gun violence.

Third, guns are already the most heavily regulated consumer product in the United States. Handguns are the only consumer product that cannot be purchased outside the buyer’s state of residence. Firearms retailers, wholesalers, and manufacturers all require federal licenses. Each retail sale must be pre-approved by government. Nationwide, thousands of laws regulate who can own a gun, how it can be purchased, and where it can be possessed and used.

Overall, I am skeptical about the efficacy of gun regulations that are imposed almost exclusively on persons who are not part of the problem. Drug legalization would radically reduce gun violence overnight. Armed guards at schools and better detection and treatment of mental illness should help. The NRA thinks so, and I agree. But the NRA is less convincing in its opposition to a ban on magazines with 20 or more rounds, a sensibly refined version of the assault weapons ban, and background checks (if they can be completed in no more than 24 hours) on private sales at gun shows.

With regard to further regulations, the Supreme Court has directed government to certify two essential points: First, the proposals will make us safer. Second, the same ends could not be attained without unduly compromising individual rights that are secured by the Second Amendment. So far, the regulators have not met that burden.

Implications of the Kermit Gosnell Verdict

Many in the world today are taking a long look at the abortion industry because of the May 14, 2013 guilty verdict and life term penalty handed down by a jury (which included 9 out of 12 pro-choice jurors)  to Dr. Kermit Gosnell. During this time of reflection I wanted to put forth some of the pro-life’s best arguments.

The Kermit Gosnell Verdict: Implications for Pro-Life Lutheran Christians

A statement by LCMS Life Ministries

After a nine-week trial, which included weeks of graphic testimony, a Pennsylvania jury found Dr. Kermit Gosnell guilty of three of four counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of babies who were born alive, but who died after their spinal cords were severed in procedures Gosnell called “abortions.” He was acquitted on the fourth murder charge. Gosnell also was convicted of involuntary manslaughter  in the botched abortion death of one mother. He faced 258 counts total, including 24 counts of performing abortions after 24 weeks gestation, which is illegal in Pennsylvania, and hundreds of charges of violating Pennsylvania’s informed consent and 24-hour waiting period laws. The jury is now in the penalty phase.

Gosnell’s murder trial became the subject of much debate nationally after pro-life activists and others criticized the mainstream media for ignoring the trial early on.

As pro-life Christians devoted to the biblical understanding of the sanctity of human life, we grieve over the tragic loss of these lives and the thousands of other children and mothers who die daily as a result of abortion. Today’s conviction of Gosnell brings justice for the many victims of this horrific abortion facility and demonstrates that abortion is clearly a slippery slope that seeks to deprive the most helpless of their basic human right: life.

The LCMS develops and promotes resources and support for pregnant women so they can avoid seeking abortions. Abortion doesn’t solve — but only masks — problems many women face and leaves many of them grieving the death of a child.

The Gosnell case generated a larger debate and rightly caused people to consider the philosophical issue of why an abortion procedure performed in utero is legal, but also how a similar act a few minutes later, outside the womb, is considered homicide.

Clearly, the case was about the death of five persons and no one can argue against the personhood of these four smaller humans. This case has exposed the ugly underbelly of the pro-abortion movement and it has brought the humanity of unborn children before the public conscience.

We call upon legislators and citizens to examine the brutality of abortion, which takes the lives of 1.2 million children every year, and the mothers who die as well. (The Center for Disease Control reports that about 400 women have died as a result of legal abortions since 1973, and 12 died in 2008, the last time such research was gathered.)

Our church aims to be a place of forgiveness, mercy and healing for all people as we continue to proclaim Christ’s comfort and truth in love. As we move forward following this ruling, we offer up our prayers for women and children in need, for families, that those still participating in the abortion industry would stop, and for our nation.

I love the works of Francis Schaeffer and I have been on the internet reading several blogs that talk about Schaeffer’s work and the work below  Micah Thornton was really helpful. Schaeffer’s film series “How should we then live?  Wikipedia notes, “According to Schaeffer, How Should We Then Live traces Western history from Ancient Rome until the time of writing (1976) along three lines: the philosophic, scientific, and religious.[3] He also makes extensive references to art and architecture as a means of showing how these movements reflected changing patterns of thought through time. Book Review : He Is There and He Is Not Silent

Posted on November 7, 2010 by Does God exist? Can we ever know God? How can we know? These are the questions addressed by Francis Schaeffer in He Is There and He Is Not Silent. In the book, Schaeffer presents the Christian worldview by systematically arguing for the necessity of the existence of God. Schaffer’s thesis in the book is that the existence of God and the fact that he has spoken to man is a philosophical necessity and is demonstrated in the areas of metaphysics, morals, and epistemology.

The first chapter deals with the metaphysical necessity. This is the basic philosophical question of being that stems from the fact that something is there rather than nothing. Schaeffer presents the metaphysical dilemma of man: Man is personal, as opposed to impersonal and he is finite. This is what Schaeffer calls the “mannishness” of man. Schaeffer asserts that there are only three possible logical answers in the area of being: Everything that exists came out of absolutely nothing, all that now is had an impersonal beginning, or all that now is had a personal beginning. Looking at the first possible answer, for everything to come from nothing, you literally have to begin with absolutely nothing, or what Schaeffer calls “nothing-nothing” to hold to this view. Schaeffer writes that this argument is unsustainable because it is “unthinkable that all that now is has come out of utter nothing” (7).

Examining the second possible answer in the area of existence, the impersonal beginning, Schaeffer writes that what you are really faced with is reductionism. To start with an impersonal beginning means that everything that is in the universe is finally reduced to the original factor or factors, whether it is energy, mass, or motion. Schaeffer concludes an impersonal beginning cannot explain the complexity of existence or the personality of man.

Finally, Schaeffer presents and argues for the third possible answer, the personal beginning. With a personal beginning, the mannishness of man does have meaning and a solution to explain it. In order to have a personal beginning, there must be a personal-infinite God, and a personal unity and diversity in God. Only a personal-infinite God is big enough for there to be absolutes to give any particulars meaning. Furthermore, the personal-infinite God is personal unity and diversity in the Trinity. In the Trinity, we have “three Persons in existence, loving each other, and in communication with each other, before all else was” (14). This is the answer not only to the philosophic need of unity and diversity, but also personal unity and diversity, which cannot exist before or behind God, because God exists before all things. This answer points to Schaeffer’s first major premise: God is there.

Leading into chapter two, Schaeffer writes that the reason we have the answer is because God has spoken, which is the other major premise of the book: God is not silent. Building on his thesis that God is there and not silent, Schaeffer writes about the moral necessity for God. The moral dilemma of man is the nobility of man, contrasted with man’s cruelty. Man has moral motions, yet he is still prone to cruel actions. If we have a personal beginning and look at man as he now is, what is the explanation for man’s cruelty? Schaeffer presents two possibilities: Man in his cruelty is was he has always intrinsically been, or man as he is now is not what he was; he has changed and is now abnormal. Schaeffer argues for the latter. If man is intrinsically cruel, then the conclusion is that God who made man is himself bad and cruel. The Christian position, Schaeffer says, is that man, created by God as personal, has changed himself by choice. God is not a bad God; he has not changed man and made him cruel. Man by choice turned away from how God created him. And so we have a moral situation on our hands: morals suddenly exist (27). As the personal creator, God himself and his character is the moral absolute of the universe.  This is the answer to man’s moral dilemma: God is there and he is not silent. He has spoken in verbal, propositional form and has told us what his character is, which has become our moral law and standard. And so man has a standard of morality of which he has fallen short and needs a solution for it, which shows the need for and the meaning of the substitutionary atonement of Christ.

Chapters three and four deal with the epistemological necessity for God. In chapter three, Schaeffer takes the reader through a history lesson of epistemological thought to show man’s current dilemma of knowing. Schaffer reminds the reader that there must be more than particulars if there is to be meaning. There must be universals that give meaning to the particulars. Schaeffer demonstrates through the history of epistemology that at the heart of modern man’s problem of knowing is the absence of those universals. As a result, man is unable to discern reality from non-reality. He is left in a world without categories in regard to human values, moral values, or the difference between reality and fantasy (52).

In chapter four, Schaeffer explains the Christian answer to the epistemological problem. First, the infinite personal God who created the universe and man, created man to live in that universe, and has spoken in the Bible to tell us about the universe. Once again, the answer is that God is there and he is not silent. Because of this, the Christian has a basis for true knowledge. “The Christian has certainty right from the start that there is an external world that is there, created by God as an objective reality” (66). Next, the Christian can truly know other people. Even if the non-Christian does not know who he is, the Christian can relate to the non-Christian because they are both made in the image of God. “We know that beyond the façade there is the person who is a verbalizer and who loves and wants to be loved. And no matter how often he says he is amoral, in reality he has moral motions” (73). Furthermore, among Christians, there is a more profound way to truly know each other. As we allow the norms of God in values and knowing bind the inward man as well as the outward man, there will be less discrepancy between the inward man and the outward man (73-74). Finally, the Christian has the freedom to discern reality from fantasy. “Being a Christian and knowing that God has made the external world, there is no confusion for me between that which is imaginary and that which is real” (75). Man’s dilemma of knowing is because of his attempted autonomy, he is robbed of any certain reality. The Christian epistemology brings an end to this confusion because his certainty of reality comes from the fact that God is there is he is not silent.

Overall, this book, while it is short in length, is a challenging read. There are portions in the book, especially in chapter three, where the reader must take the time to read slowly and thoughtfully. In chapter three, a reader who is not already well read in the areas of philosophy and epistemology will likely encounter unfamiliar vocabulary and schools of thought and he will need to spend additional time looking up definitions and background information on various theological systems in order to fully understand what the author is communicating. However, this is not a weakness in the book, as it is not the author’s purpose to teach an introduction to philosophy but to make a philosophical argument for the necessity of the existence of God. Having said that, the rest of the book follows a logical flow of thought in which the author makes a strong, convincing argument for his thesis.

Clearly, the book is well researched. This is particularly evident as the author presents the history of epistemological thought. Schaeffer’s expert knowledge of these various schools of thought allows him to understand the dilemma of man and demonstrate how the personal God who is there and who speaks to man is the only answer to that dilemma. The author is also fair in presenting other viewpoints that are opposed to the Christian worldview. Schaeffer does not berate, belittle, or in any put down those who hold to these viewpoints such as positivism or existentialism, for example. Rather, he simply and logically shows how these viewpoints are inadequate in answering the dilemma of man. In fact, he shows genuine compassion for those who are looking for the answers in themselves and cannot find them. He truly longs for them to look to the infinite, personal God, discover who he is and in turn, learn who they themselves are.

It can be said with confidence that Schaeffer accomplished his intended purpose of the book. In the early pages of the book Schaeffer laments that he has grown tired of being asked why he does not just preach the “simple gospel”. Schaeffer reminds us that for the most part, we are dealing with a generation whose basic presupposition is that the universe had an impersonal beginning. Before you can even share the “simple gospel”, you have to make the case for the necessity for the existence of the infinite, personal God who is there and who speaks. You first have to answer the questions of the existence, personality, and morality of man, and show how these things only find their answer and meaning in the God who is there and is not silent, before you can even demonstrate the need for the substitutionary atonement of Christ; which is precisely what Schaeffer has accomplished with this book.

He Is There and He Is Not Silent is a book that can be beneficial to a variety of people. For the non-Christian who is trying to answer the questions of his existence and wonders if it has any meaning, this book can help guide him to the answer. For the Christian, it can give him a more solid foundation in his faith. For the evangelist, the missionary, or the pastor, it can be a valuable tool for ministering to non-Christians and leading them to Christ. To that end, this book is a valuable resource.

Life without God in the picture is absurdity!!!. That was the view of King Solomon when he wrote the Book of Ecclesiastes 3000 years ago and it is the view of many of the modern philosophers todayModern man has tried to come up with a lasting meaning for life without God in the picture (life under the sun), but it is not possible. Without the infinite-personal God of the Bible to reveal moral absolutes then man is left to embrace moral relativism. In a time plus chance universe man is reduced to a machine and can not find a place for values such as love. Both of Francis Schaeffer’s film series have tackled these subjects and he shows how this is reflected in the arts.

In the film series “WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE HUMAN RACE?” the arguments are presented  against abortion (Episode 1),  infanticide (Episode 2),   euthenasia (Episode 3), and then there is a discussion of the Christian versus Humanist worldview concerning the issue of “the basis for human dignity” in Episode 4 and then in the last episode a close look at the truth claims of the Bible.

I have discussed many subjects with my liberal friends over at the Ark Times Blog in the past and I have taken them on now on the subject of the absurdity of life without God in the picture. Most of my responses included quotes from William Lane Craig’s book THE ABSURDITY OF LIFE WITHOUT GOD.  Here is the result of one of those encounters from June of 2013:

I wrote:

Why do so many people never get around to the big questions in life? (Why am I here? Is there an afterlife? Is there a purpose and lasting meaning to our lives?)

At least many of the readers of the Ark Times have wrestled with these questions.

William Lane Craig in his book “The Absurdity of Life without God,” opens the book by giving noting that one of the earliest examples of a Christian apology appealing to the human predicament is the Pensées of the French mathematician and physicist Blaise Pascal (1623–1662). Having come to a personal faith in Christ in 1654, Pascal had planned to write a defense of the Christian faith entitled L’Apologie de la religion chrétienne, but he died of a debilitating disease at the age of only thirty-nine years, leaving behind hundreds of notes for the work, which were then published posthumously as the Pensées…Despite their predicament, however, most people, incredibly, refuse to seek an answer or even to think about their dilemma. Instead, they lose themselves in escapisms. Listen to Pascal’s description of the reasoning of such a person:

I know not who sent me into the world, nor what the world is, nor what I myself am. I am terribly ignorant of everything. I know not what my body is, nor my senses, nor my soul and that part of me which thinks what I say, which reflects upon itself as well as upon all external things, and has no more knowledge of itself than of them.
I see the terrifying immensity of the universe which surrounds me, and find myself limited to one corner of this vast expanse, without knowing why I am set down here rather than elsewhere, nor why the brief period appointed for my life is assigned to me at this moment rather than another in all the eternity that has gone before and will come after me. On all sides I behold nothing but infinity, in which I am a mere atom, a mere passing shadow that returns no more. All I know is that I must soon die, but what I understand least of all is this very death which I cannot escape.
As I know not whence I come, so I know not whither I go. I only know that on leaving this world I fall for ever into nothingness or into the hands of a wrathful God, without knowing to which of these two states I shall be everlastingly consigned. Such is my condition, full of weakness and uncertainty. From all this I conclude that I ought to spend every day of my life without seeking to know my fate. I might perhaps be able to find a solution to my doubts; but I cannot be bothered to do so, I will not take one step towards its discovery.3

Pascal can only regard such indifference as insane. Man’s condition ought to impel him to seek to discover whether there is a God and a solution to his predicament. But people occupy their time and their thoughts with trivialities and distractions, so as to avoid the despair, boredom, and anxiety that would inevitably result if those diversions were removed.
