The infamous 17-16 Auburn win over second-ranked Alabama, commonly known as “Punt Bama Punt”

I got to see Gene Chizik speak at the Little Rock Touchdown Club on Sept 30, 2013 and he did a great job. He probably took this speaking engagement because of his respect for the Broyles Award which he won in Little Rock in 2004. So many winners of that award have gone on to become head coaches and do great things. David Cutcliffe was the 2012 ACC Coach of the year and he won the award in 1998 the year Tennessee won the national title. Gus Malzahn won it when he was at Auburn in 2010 when the Tigers won the national title and now he is the head coach at Auburn. All the details are below about the Broyles Award winners!!!

The Broyles Award is an annual award given to honor the best assistant coach in college football. First awarded in 1996, it was named after former University of Arkansas men’s athletic director Frank Broyles.[1] The award is presented in Little Rock, Arkansas at the Downtown Rotary Club.

Award

Every year, 1,500 assistant coaches representing all 117 Division One college football programs vote on their peers in the world of college football, and the five Broyles Award finalists are chosen by the tally of these ballots. Each head coach can nominate one assistant coach from his staff. All nominations are reviewed by a selection committee composed of some of college football’s former head coaches. The five finalists meet in Little Rock, Arkansas, where each is presented with a 1,000 dollar check, as well as a set of golf clubs and personalized golf bag. The winner received 2,500 dollars, a watch, the Broyles Award Jacket custom-made by Tom James, as well as the trophy, valued at around 5,000 dollars.

Trophy

The Broyles Award Trophy, made out of solid bronze, depicts Broyles (kneeling) and longtime University of Arkansas assistant coach Wilson Matthews (standing), watching over a Razorback football game or practice. Matthews was the coach of Little Rock Central High School before joining Broyles on the Razorback’s staff.

Here are some more facts about the Broyles Award:

In the prestigious history of college football, there are few coaches whose efforts have forever impacted the game. Bear Bryant, Knute Rockne, Frank Leahy and Eddie Robinson have set the standard for victories and championships on the gridiron. However, when it comes to selecting, developing and producing great assistant coaches, the legacy of Frank Broyles stands alone.

Broyles Assistant Coaches who became head coaches have won:

Figuring out Lorde’s Christian Roots Part 11 (UPDATED)

Figuring out Lorde’s Christian Roots Part 11

UPDATED (David Bruce commented “She didn’t say she was a big Jesus believer. She said she was a big Yeezus believer. Which is a Kanye West album. Which incidentally is a blasphemous, hateful piece of garbage from what I’ve heard of it.” This sets me straight concerning what Lorde said in the video that I saw. She did not say that she was a “big Jesus believer.” )

Lorde: Behind the success story (+audio)

By Charlotte Ryan 8:55 AM Thursday May 2, 2013

Kiwi FM’s Charlotte Ryan writes about New Zealand’s break-out star of the moment, Ella Yelich-O’Connor, aka Lorde

Ella Yelich-O'Connor aka Lorde. Photo / Supplied

Ella Yelich-O’Connor aka Lorde. Photo / Supplied

I felt strangely nervous meeting Ella Yelich-O’Connor. Was I supposed to call her Lorde, her stage name? Or Ella?

Considering the hype Yelich-O’Connor has already received, this North Shore 16-year-old has been something of a mystery.

Like so many others, from the moment I heard Lorde’s single Royals and her The Love Club EP in December, I became addicted to it. I found myself playing tracks from her EP each day to fuel my habit. It also made me want to learn more about her – see who she was.

Initially, there were no videos, no press releases, no photos – just whispers of her attending Takapuna Grammar, being signed to Universal Music at the age of 13, and a drawing of a girl with long brown hair and a snake, an illustration by Sam Yong, founder of the I Love Ugly fashion label. They had been discussing her new website over a coffee and she spied his drawings, which she loved, so asked him to whip something up instead of a traditional press shot.

And the name Lorde – “Lord with an E,” she proudly explains. “I was interested in aristocracy and royalty at the time.”

She considered Duke but it was too masculine (and of course, Prince was taken).

She liked Lord – but decided to add the “e” because it “sounded nice and looked nice”. And she wants to confirm to everyone her stage name is not religious. “Lorde is like a character, something I can switch on and switch off when I’m on stage”

I meet Yelich-O’Connor in the Golden Age studio, run by her co-writer Joel Little, and where she recorded the EP.

She seems right at home in the small space, playing with the heat pump, settling into the couch, staring intently as we talk. She has spent a lot of time in this space writing and recording – 10 to 12-hour days in sometimes 50 to 60-hour weeks.

In the early days of her record label “development”, her management paired her with other local songwriters, none of whom worked out very well.

“It was really uncomfortable,” Yelich-O’Connor says, adding that she felt they didn’t take her seriously because of her age. “People thought because I was 14 they would do all the work.”

She also had to be convinced that music was for her. That didn’t happen until she met Little who, she says, was not an immediately obvious person to write with, considering his background in pop-punk outfit Goodnight Nurse and electropop duo Kids of 88.

But their partnership has proved successful. She likes him because “he doesn’t want to put his huge big signature on the music”. The writing process starts with Yelich-O’Connor coming to him with lyrics written on her laptop. She has very little technical knowledge but he pushes her, which she needs – and loves.

She talks passionately about lyrics and words. They fascinate her; she reads lots of books, she admits this probably comes from her poet mother.

She says signing a record label contract at the age of 13 was very weird. “Its such an alien thing to think about your life and career at that age. I wasn’t even sure if it was music that I wanted to do with my life.”

Universal discovered the artist when her now manager, Scott Maclachlan, also a Devonport resident, saw a video of her performing at a Belmont Intermediate School concert when she was 12.

Maclachlan contacted Yelich-O’Connor and her parents and started talking about her future.

Four years later, the Royals single entered the national charts at No1 in March – and hasn’t moved far from the top spot since. It has now gone platinum.

Royals was written in a week during the school holidays, along with two other songs on her EP. She says she is now is sick of listening to songs from the Love Club EP, though. “When you’re my age, a year ago, you’re a completely different person to the one you are now … so I listen to the EP and think it’s so terrible and I’m so embarrassed about everything that’s on here. It’s that part of me that makes me want to move on and make better stuff.”

She is still recording at Golden Age, but can’t confirm whether it’s an EP or an album she is working towards. She looks coy and excited when talking about her new recordings and it’s her new music that will define her future, and get her past the initial hype.

Talking of which, she laughs and says how crazy it is that the likes of celebrity blogger Perez Hilton have blogged about her, and lists other musicians who have tweeted her or started following her too – including the very hip and cool Grimes.

She has recently been signed to Lava Records (US label and home of Jessie J) and has two sold-out shows in Australia to add to her shows next week in Auckland and Wellington (the Auckland ones sold out in minutes).

Performance and playing live to an audience is a new thing. Even though she studied drama and performances at school and she tells me she is a great public speaker – it wasn’t performance that attracted her to become a musician.

From writing the songs, it has been a process to figure out how to translate her music to a live performance.

She’ll be backed by a live drummer (Ben Barter – Kids in Space and the Wyld) and keyboards (Jimmy Mac – Ruby Frost and the DHDFDS) but Yelich-O’Connor didn’t want to play any musical instrument on stage, so she can focus on her vocals and performance.

“There’s something very classic about a female singing alone,” she says. She credits herself as the worst dancer and says she just goes with the vibe: “Everything comes to life on stage.” She hopes her performance will be an experience for her early fans.

Her future? She lists goals – to play festivals such as Glastonbury, Coachella. She wants to collaborate with artists like James Blake (who she cites as a huge inspiration), Thom Yorke, Burial, Major Lazer and Flume, all left-field acts rather than chart-oriented pop producers.

But right here on the couch, Yelich-O’Connor comes across as very down-to-earth and grounded. And she intends to stay that way, especially with the tight team and family behind her.

“As soon as you think you are cool you start acting crazy. I don’t have a gauge of how big a deal I am. My life is very much the same,” she explains. “It’s just weird when people want to take photos of me at parties.”

WHAT’S WITH THE DOG?

“I was fascinated with aristocracy and royal families – especially their family portraits. The type of photos where they are all sitting straight, looking awkward with their animals around them and a sheaf of wheat or something sitting there strangely representing their farm or whatever.

“I wanted a big dog – so asked the photographer and he had a stylist friend who brought one in. I hope it doesn’t look too awkward …”

Dear Senator Pryor, here are some spending cut suggestions (“Thirsty Thursday”, Open letter to Senator Pryor)

Senator Pryor pictured below:

Why do I keep writing and email Senator Pryor suggestions on how to cut our budget? I gave him hundreds of ideas about how to cut spending and as far as I can tell he has taken none of my suggestions. You can find some of my suggestions here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here,  here, and  here, and they all were emailed to him. In fact, I have written 13 posts pointing out reasons why I believe Senator Pryor’s re-election attempt will be unsuccessful. HERE I GO AGAIN WITH ANOTHER EMAIL I JUST SENT TO SENATOR PRYOR!!!

Dear Senator Pryor,

Why not pass the Balanced  Budget amendment? As you know that federal deficit is at all time high (1.6 trillion deficit with revenues of 2.2 trillion and spending at 3.8 trillion).

On my blog www.thedailyhatch.org . I took you at your word and sent you over 100 emails with specific spending cut ideas. (Actually there were over 160 emails with specific spending cut suggestions.) However, I did not see any of them in the recent debt deal that Congress adopted although you did respond to me several times. Now I am trying another approach. Every week from now on I will send you an email explaining different reasons why we need the Balanced Budget Amendment or I send you specific spending cut suggestions. It will appear on my blog on “Thirsty Thursday” because the government is always thirsty for more money to spend.

IF YOU TRULY WANT TO CUT THE BUDGET AND BALANCE THE BUDGET THEN SUBMIT THESE POTENTIAL BUDGET CUTS PRESENTED BELOW!!

What Are the Dangers of Too Much Debt?

Published on Mar 20, 2012

Interest payments on U.S. government debt are three times spending in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars already, and that is with the lowest interest rate we have seen since the 1960s. A rise in interest rates would increase interest payments dramatically. What can the U.S. government do today to prevent a crisis from happening when interest rates go up?

__________

In May of 2010 Chris Edwards wrote this article:

Department of Energy

Proposed Spending Cuts

Department of Energy research activities should be terminated. The private sector is entirely capable of funding its own research into coal, natural gas, nuclear power, solar power, and other forms of energy. Businesses will fund new technologies when there is a reasonable chance of commercial success, as they do in other private industries.

Federal energy subsidies impose a burden on taxpayers, and they can be counterproductive if they steer the marketplace away from the most efficient energy solutions. Furthermore, federal energy research has a track record of poor management, cost overruns, and wasteful boondoggles.

The Strategic Petroleum Reserve and the Power Marketing Administrations should be privatized. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission should be terminated. Ending all these activities would save taxpayers about $18 billion annually, as shown in the table.

The bulk of the Department of Energy’s activities are defense-related. Those activities, which total about $19 billion annually, should be moved to the Department of Defense. That would allow for a more transparent presentation of defense costs in the budget, and it would allow the Department of Energy to be abolished.

Department of Energy
Proposed Spending Cuts
Program
Spending in 2010
($ million)
Terminate:
 Energy Efficiency and Renewables $9,199
 General Science $5,772
 Vehicle Technologies $1,723
 Fossil Energy Research $1,092
Technology Loan Guarantee Program $823
 Nuclear Energy Research $816
 Power Marketing Administrations $788
 Electricity Research $381
 Strategic Petroleum Reserve $232
 Energy Information Administration $107
 Other programs and adjustments ($2,502)
Transfer to the Environmental Protection Agency:
 Nondefense environmental clean-up $401
 Nuclear waste disposal $143
Transfer to the Department of Defense:
 Nuclear Security Administration $10,441
 Defense environmental clean-up $8,163
 Uranium-related activities $699
Total proposed cuts and transfers $38,278
Total department outlays $38,278

_______________

The Balanced Budget Amendment is the only thing I can think of that would force Washington to cut spending. We have only a handful of balanced budgets in the last 60 years, so obviously what we are doing is not working. We are passing along this debt to the next generation. YOUR APPROACH HAS BEEN TO REJECT THE BALANCED BUDGET “BECAUSE WE SHOULD CUT THE BUDGET OURSELF,” WELL THEN HERE IS YOUR CHANCE!!!! SUBMIT THESE CUTS!!!!

Thank you for this opportunity to share my ideas with you.

Cartoons from Dan Mitchell’s blog that demonstrate what Obama is doing to our economy (A Humorous Look at Obama’s Green-Energy Boondoggle)

I have put up lots of cartoons from Dan Mitchell’s blog before and they have got lots of hits before. Many of them have dealt with the economy, eternal unemployment benefits, socialism,  Greece,  welfare state or on gun control.

Actually, I’m not sure this is humorous. Whether we’re looking at ethanol, Solyndra, or other green-energy scams that promote corruption and undermine the economy, this is not a laughing matter.

After all, we’re the taxpayers and consumers who are pushing this turkey up the hill.

I’m adding Lisa Benson to my list of good cartoonists. Her monopoly cartoon at this link (the second of the two cartoons) is also disturbingly accurate.

And if you like humor about energy policy, check out these three cartoons.

FREE TO CHOOSE “Who protects the worker?” Video and Transcript Part 1 of 7 “The best protection for the worker is neither unions nor government. Rather, it is the existence of other employers willing to compete for services of skilled individuals”

FREE TO CHOOSE “Who protects the worker?” Video and Transcript Part 1 of 7

In 1980 I read the book FREE TO CHOOSE by Milton Friedman and it really enlightened me a tremendous amount.  I suggest checking out these episodes and transcripts of Milton Friedman’s film series FREE TO CHOOSE: “The Failure of Socialism” and “What is wrong with our schools?”  and “Created Equal”  and  From Cradle to Grave, and – Power of the Market. Milton Friedman shows in this episode how the worker is best protected and it is not by the government!!!!!!!

Liberals say that the government must step in to help the workers and that the unions must but truly the best opportunity for the worker is increased competition from employers trying to hire him or her. Many times when the government gets involved the most unskilled worker is hurt the most.

In the final analysis, the best protection for the worker is neither unions nor government. Rather, it is the existence of other employers willing to compete for services of skilled individuals.
Milton Friedman makes this point in this episode:
“ In the United States the American Medical Association has for decades been one of the strongest labor unions in the country, keeping down the number of physicians, keeping up the costs of medical care, preventing competition by people from outside the profession with those in it. All, of course, in the name of helping the patient.”
Volume 8 – Who Protects the Worker?
Transcript:

Friedman: People who earn their living in a modern heavy industry seldom engage in the kind of back-breaking toil that was the everyday lot of most workers a century ago. And yet they earn far more. What has produced these improvements? The offhand reaction of most people is likely to be that labor unions are largely responsible for the enormous progress workers have made in the past two centuries. But clearly, at least for the U.S. that cannot be true. After all, in the 19th Century when workers did very well, there were hardly any labor unions at all. And even today, no more than one out of four or five workers is a member of a trade union. And the remainder do very well indeed in achieving the highest level of living in the world. Labor unions do, of course, benefit their members but far from being a key to the development of the modern society. They are a throwback to an earlier pre-industrial era to the agreements among craftsman in the middle ages or to go back even earlier, more than 2000 years ago to the agreement among medical men in Greece.

From the tiny Greece island of Kash, the coast of Asia Minor is four miles away in the mist. Twenty five hundred years ago a hospital and medical school flourished on Kash. The great Hippocrates, the founder of modern medicine, work there. Legend has it that Hippocrates taught his students in the shade of this plain tree. He welcomed anyone who wanted to learn, so long as they paid his fee. There is another legend that St. Paul stood here and preached the Gospel of Christianity. What isn’t legend is that Hippocrates and his followers started medicine on the road forward to becoming a science. When Hippocrates died at the age of 104, or so legend has it, this island was full of medial people, his students and disciples. Competition for custom was fierce. Some 20 years after he died they got together and constructed a code of conduct. They named it the Hippocratic Oath, after their old teacher and master. Every new physician, before he could start practice, came to this spot back here in front of those columns and took the Oath. The oath was full of fine ideals for protecting the patient. But it also had a couple of other things in it. Listen to this one, “I will impart a knowledge of the art to my own self and those of my teachers and to disciples bound by a stipulation and oath according to the law of medicine, but to none others.” Today we’d call that a closed shop. Or listen to this one referring to patients suffering from the agonizing disease of kidney or bladder stones, “I will not cut persons laboring under the stone but will leave this to be done by men who are practitioners of this work.” A nice market sharing agreement between physicians and surgeons. Hippocrates must turn in his grave when a new class of medical men takes that oath. After all, he taught anyone provided only they pay his tuition. He would strongly have objected to the kind of restrictive practices that physicians all over the world have adopted to protect their custom. In the United States the American Medical Association has for decades been one of the strongest labor unions in the country, keeping down the number of physicians, keeping up the costs of medical care, preventing competition by people from outside the profession with those in it. All, of course, in the name of helping the patient.

Without warning, anyone of us may suddenly need medical care. If we do, we want the very best care we can get. But who can give us that care?

It is always a graduate of an expensive medical school who has a union card called a medical license? Or might it be someone like this a trained paramedic working for a private enterprise organization rendering emergency care?

Paramedic: And hopefully we’ll get a very good contract out of that.

Friedman: Many such businesses provide primary care for emergency cases in the United States. This particular paramedic team is attached to a fire department in southern California. They’re good at their job. But it’s not unusual to find local physicians objecting.

Joe Dolphin: They take the Hippocratic Oath here in the United States and they believe that they should be the one that is treating their patient. They should be the one that saves that patient’s life. And if someone else does it, it just kind of interferes with everything that they have been taught.

Friedman: But why should medical care be a monopoly of licensed physicians? Shouldn’t anyone who is capable of providing effective help be free to do so.

Paramedic: I’m going to take your blood pressure here. Okay, any one see him go down?

Friedman: You can be sure that no one would be able to stay in this business very long unless he can demonstrate by performance that he’s doing a good job. Joe Dolphin knows that very well.

Joe Dolphin: We’ve taken some statistical samples of the kind of effectiveness paramedics have in California. Giving an example of that, in one district of California that we serve which is a county which is populated to the extent of 580,000 people. Before the introduction of paramedics, less than 1% of the patients that suffered a cardiac arrest or their heart stopped, lived through their hospital stay and were released from the hospital. But with the introduction of paramedics, just in the first six months of operation, 23% of the people who’s heart stops, are successfully resuscitated and are released from the hospital and go back to productive working society. We think that’s pretty amazing. We think the facts speak for themselves. However, relating that to the medical community is sometimes very difficult. They have ideas of their own.

Paramedics: Respirations 12 and regular by… Looks good to me Dave. How are you reading this down there? Are you guys ready to go? Yeah. It says Code Two. Code Two?

Friedman: Disputes between union and non-union workers are not always as high-minded as between organized medicine and Joe Dolphin.

I would to hear your reaction to this short clip and transcript below:

Dr. Schaeffer’s sweeping epic on the rise and decline of Western thought and Culture

_______________________

I love the works of Francis Schaeffer and I have been on the internet reading several blogs that talk about Schaeffer’s work and the work below was really helpful. Schaeffer’s film series “How should we then live?  Wikipedia notes, “According to Schaeffer, How Should We Then Live traces Western history from Ancient Rome until the time of writing (1976) along three lines: the philosophic, scientific, and religious.[3] He also makes extensive references to art and architecture as a means of showing how these movements reflected changing patterns of thought through time. Schaeffer’s central premise is: when we base society on the Bible, on the infinite-personal God who is there and has spoken,[4] this provides an absolute by which we can conduct our lives and by which we can judge society.  Here are some posts I have done on this series: Francis Schaeffer’s “How should we then live?” Video and outline of episode 10 “Final Choices” , episode 9 “The Age of Personal Peace and Affluence”, episode 8 “The Age of Fragmentation”, episode 7 “The Age of Non-Reason” , episode 6 “The Scientific Age” ,  episode 5 “The Revolutionary Age” , episode 4 “The Reformation”,  episode 3 “The Renaissance”, episode 2 “The Middle Ages,”, and  episode 1 “The Roman Age,” .

In the film series “WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE HUMAN RACE?” the arguments are presented  against abortion (Episode 1),  infanticide (Episode 2),   euthanasia (Episode 3), and then there is a discussion of the Christian versus Humanist worldview concerning the issue of “the basis for human dignity” in Episode 4 and then in the last episode a close look at the truth claims of the Bible.

By Francis A. Schaeffer

(From a speech given in 1982…)

Now, moving from public schools to private schools, what is the priority? Notice I am not saying Christian schools, but all private schools, including Christian schools. If you are really going to do something here, you have to think larger than your own interest. What we must do in the private schools, including the Christian schools, is to stand against those who have done so much to ruin our public schools in not allowing them to get a hold on the private schools, and specifically, the Christian schools, through a control of the curriculum. What we should be doing is struggling to see that the Christian school’s curriculum is not controlled by those who have with their world view ruined the public schools.

This does not mean that the state does not have a legitimate interest in the safety of the pupils in such a thing as a firedoor. There are Christian schools that have said the state has no right even to tell them not to have a fire trap. That is not so. The state has a responsibility to say that a group of people meeting in a building like this we are meeting in have exit signs around the room, so that if there is a fire you will not all burn to death, and that is equally so for the kids in school. So the issue is not something like fire doors. The issue is that they must not begin to bring the same destructive teaching into the private schools by the back door of curriculum control that they have brought so dominantly into the public schools. We must not allow them to bring in through the back door a control of the curriculum and especially at the very point where the Bible’s content is denied and contaminated. Therefore, the protection of the Christian school curriculum is another one of the priorities, which Christians ought to be consciously and intelligently standing for.

However, let me say another side of this question of the Christian school and our protection of it. While we are saying that the Christian school is not to allow its curriculum to be corrupted, we must also say that the private school, and specifically the Christian school, should give a good education.

We are to say we are going to control the curriculum. We are not going to let the state bring in the materialistic view as the final reality through the back door. But if we are going to say that with any validity the Christian schools must be giving a really good education. It should not just be a matter of not teaching what is wrong in a twisted education that rules out a Creator. Our Christian schools should not primarily be negative oriented. It is to be positive.

It is not just to be negative. It should be a superior education, if you are going to really protect the Christian school. It should certainly teach the students how to read and write and how to do mathematics better than most public schools enjoy today. It should do that but it should also appreciate and teach the full scope of human learning. Christian education is indeed knowing the Bible, of course it is, but Christian education should also deal with all human knowledge. We can think of what I said previously about the humanities. Christian education should deal with all human knowledge – presenting it in a framework of truth, rooted in the Creator’s existence, and in his creation. Real Christian education, if we are going to protect our Christian schools, is not just the negative side, it is positive, touching on all human knowledge; and in each case, according to the level of the students, showing how it fits into the total framework of truth, the truth of all reality as rooted in the Creator’s existence and in His creation. If the Judeo-Christian position is the truth of all reality, and-it is, then all the disciplines, and very much including a knowledge of, and I would repeat, an appreciation of, the humanities and the arts are a part of Christian education. Some Christians seem absolutely blind at this point.

If Christianity is not just one more religion, one more upper story kind of thing (as I speak of it in Escape From Reason and in my other books) then it has something to say about all the disciplines, and it certainly has something to say about the humanities and the arts and the appreciation of them. And I want to say quite firmly, if your Christian school does not do this, I do not believe it is giving a good education. It is giving a truncated education and it is not honoring to the Lord.

If truth is one, that is if truth has unity, then Christian education means understanding, and being excited by, the associations between the disciplines and showing how these associations are rooted in the Creator’s existence. I do not know if you know what you are hearing or not. It is a flaming fire. It is gorgeous if you understand what we have in the teaching and revelation of God. If we are going to have really a Christian education, it means understanding truth is not a series of isolated subjects but there are associations, and the associations are rooted in nothing less than the existence of the Creator Himself.

True Christian education is not a negative thing; it is not a matter of isolating the student from the full scope of knowledge. Isolating the student from large sections of human knowledge is not the basis of a Christian education. Rather it is giving him or her the framework or total truth, rooted in the Creator’s existence and in the Bible’s teaching, so that in each step of the formal learning process the student will understand what is true and what is false and why it is true or false. It is not isolating students from human knowledge. It is teaching them in a framework of the total Biblical teaching, beginning with the tremendous central thing, that in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. It is teaching in this framework, so that on their own level, as they are introduced to all of human knowledge, they are not introduced in the midst of a vacuum, but they are taught each step along the way why what they are hearing is either true or false. That is true education. The student, then, is an educated person. I just say in passing, John Harvard understood that when he founded Harvard University. It was founded with this whole thing in mind. The student, then if he is taught this way, is an educated person, who will have the tools to keep learning and enjoy learning throughout all of life. Is life dull? How can it be dull? No, a true education, a Christian education, is more than the negative, though that is there. It is giving the tools in the opening the doors to all human knowledge, in the Christian framework so they will know what is truth and what is untruth, so they can keep learning as long as they live, and they can enjoy, they can really enjoy, the whole wrestling through field after field of knowledge. That is what an educated person is.

In short, Christian education should produce students more educated in the totality of knowledge, culture and life, than non-Christian education rooted in a false view of truth. The Christian education should end with a better educated boy and girl and man and woman, than the false could ever produce. Protecting the Christian school must carry with it more than the negative; it should produce a superior education in all areas of. knowledge, and notice I am saying all areas of human knowledge.

Funding Government by the Minute

Published on Mar 28, 2012

At the rate the federal government spends, it runs out of money on July 31. What programs should be cut to balance the budget and fund the government for the remaining five months of the year? Cutting NASA might buy two days; cutting the Navy could buy fifteen. It seems that balancing the budget may require more than just cutting government programs. What should be done?

Head Start: Another Costly Government Failure

January 24, 2013 by Dan Mitchell

What’s more realistic: A unicorn, Bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster, or a successful government program?

This isn’t a trick question. Even though I’ve presented both theoretical and empirical arguments against government spending, that doesn’t mean every government program is a failure.

I suppose the answer depends on the definition of success.

Government roads do enable me to get from Virginia to Washington every day. And the Post Office usually gets mail from one side of the country to another. By that standard, many government programs and activities yield positive results.

But if the question is whether government achieves anything in a cost-efficient manner, you’re probably better off searching under your bed for unicorns.

If you pose this question to someone on the left, however, don’t be surprised if they point to Head Start. The conventional wisdom in Washington is that this program gives low-income kids a critical leg up before they start school.

I would like this to be true. I may not be fond of big and bloated government, but the best interests of these kids are more important than my desire for a talking point against the welfare state.

So what does the evidence say?

Head Start CartoonHere’s what the Washington Examiner wrote about the program, starting with an explanation of what the program is supposed to accomplish.

There are few institutions more sacrosanct in Washington than President Johnson’s Head Start program. The federal government spent more than $7.9 billion on the program in 2012 alone to provide preschool services for nearly 1 million low-income Americans. The program represents everything that is supposedly great about the liberal welfare state. It redistributes resources from wealthy to poor. It uses the power of the federal government to combat inequality by giving poor and minority students an educational boost before they fall behind their wealthier peers. There’s just one problem: It doesn’t work.

Is that an empty assertion? Nope, it’s the evidence from the government’s own research.

The ongoing randomized study of Head Start was based on a nationally representative sample of 5,000 children who applied for the program in 2002. Approximately half of the subjects received Head Start services, while the other half did not. The students were then tested on their language, literacy, math and school performance skills. …the 2010 Head Start Impact Study report notes, “the benefits of access to Head Start at age four are largely absent by 1st grade for the program population as a whole.” Specifically, the language, literacy, math and school performance skills of the Head Start children all failed to improve. …Now, the HHS has finally published a follow-up to its 2010 study that follows the same children through the end of third grade. And again, the HHS has concluded that Head Start is ineffective, concluding that Heat Start resulted in “very few impacts … in any of the four domains of cognitive, social-emotional, health and parenting practices.” And those impacts that were found “did not show a clear pattern of favorable or unfavorable impacts for children.”

So what’s this costing the nation (above and beyond the failure to improve the lives of children)?

Since 1965, the federal government has spent $180 billion on Head Start. …Does that sound like a program you’d want to spend $8 billion on next year?

Now imagine the good things that would have happened if that money was left in the economy’s productive sector.

Or, if you like government, but at least want good results, imagine the good things that would have happened if state and local governments shifted $180 billion from the failed school monopoly into genuine school choice programs.

But let’s close on an optimistic note. As far as I know, there’s no evidence that Head Start actually damages children. It’s just wasted money.

That’s a much better track record than other welfare state programs.

___________

Thank you so much for your time. I know how valuable it is. I also appreciate the fine family that you have and your commitment as a father and a husband.

If you want to cut wasteful spending then the disability program must be reformed radically!!!

If you want to cut wasteful spending then the disability program must be reformed radically!!!

60 Minutes Disability Investigation

The abuse and overspending in government disability programs is so bad that even National Public Radio and 60 Minutes have taken notice. On the heels of this excellent NPR examination of the “disability industrial complex,” the venerable CBS news show last night profiled Senator Tom Coburn’s efforts to uncover fraud in the two big federal disability programs.

The combined spending on Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) has risen to a huge $200 billion a year, so kudos to the mainstream media for sounding the alarm on these programs. What we need now is for other fiscal conservatives on Capitol Hill to stand with Senator Coburn and demand reforms.

There appear to be millions of people on the disability programs whose ailments are not actually severe enough to warrant coverage or who are outright scamming the system.  On 60 Minutes, Senator Coburn guessed that one-quarter or more of the people currently on the disability programs shouldn’t be. The following chart (sourced here) from Tad DeHaven supports Coburn’s assessment:

During the 1970s and 1980s, the ratio of people on SSDI to the U.S. workforce averaged 3.4 percent. That ratio has now more than doubled to 7.4 percent, even though the actual rate of disability among the working-age population is thought not to have increased in recent decades.

The following chart illustrates the problem from another angle. It uses data compiled by Jagadeesh Gokhale from the Current Population Survey on men aged 20 to 59 with a work-limiting health problem. Within this group, a falling share are working and a rising share are going on SSDI and not working.

As DeHaven explains in his recent reports on SSDI and SSI, the rapid growth in these programs is very troubling, and not just because of the rising taxpayer costs. The programs are apparently inducing many people who could be using their skills productively in the economy to instead drop out and go on the federal dole.

All government subsidy programs undermine individual responsibility and induce unproductive behaviors. This is true, for example, of the roughly $30 billion in annual federal subsidies for farm businesses. Each year federal disability programs pump out six times more benefits than farm subsidies, so it wouldn’t be surprising if the distortions and economic harm created is far larger.

Open letter to President Obama (Part 425) Taking on Ark Times Bloggers on various issues Part B “Gendercide” (Francis Schaeffer Quotes Part 2 includes the film ABORTION OF THE HUMAN RACE) (editorial cartoon)

(Emailed to White House on 3-4-13.)

President Obama c/o The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW
Washington, DC 20500

Dear Mr. President,

I know that you receive 20,000 letters a day and that you actually read 10 of them every day. I really do respect you for trying to get a pulse on what is going on out here.

I wanted to share with you some about my pro-life perspective.

I have gone back and forth and back and forth with many liberals on the Arkansas Times Blog on many issues such as abortion, human rights, welfare, poverty, gun control  and issues dealing with popular culture. Here is another exchange I had with them a while back. My username at the Ark Times Blog is Saline Republican.

On 2-19-13 the liberal blogger “DeathbyInches asserted on the Ark Times Blog,

Used to when I’d see David Sanders on my TV it would usually cause my bowels to move right after that.

And would a young girl be looking for an oil change if she was sitting in an abortion clinic? I’ll have to ask the many women I know if when they were younger and went to LR or Fayetteville for an abortion…did they find the doctor on his knees begging them to go for it because his babies needed new shoes.

When, unless the mother isn’t able or the fetus has a major defect…..what other times does a doctor look at a woman and “advise” she better ditch that fetus before the sun goes down….little Missy! I smell a cooked up story….sniff sniff….yep…cooked up, sure smells like it.

On 2-19-13 I responded on the Ark Times Blog,

DBI,you are wrong about young pregnant girls not being encouraged to have abortions for small things. Gendercide is actually happening a lot today. DO YOU FAVOR GENDERCIDE ? Here is a video of this happening in Texas. https://thedailyhatch.org/2012/06/11/why-wo…

Over 100 millions girls are missing today. These girls were victims of gendercide. The war on baby girls begins in the womb. Here is an article below about the case in Texas.

AUSTIN, May 29 — Today, Live Action released a new undercover video showing a Planned Parenthood abortion clinic in Austin, TX encouraging a woman to obtain a late-term abortion because she was purportedly carrying a girl and wanted to have a boy. The video is first in a new series titled “Gendercide: Sex-Selection in America,” exposing the practice of sex-selective abortion in the United States and how Planned Parenthood and the rest of the abortion industry facilitate the selective elimination of baby girls in the womb.

“I see that you’re saying that you want to terminate if it’s a girl, so are you just wanting to continue the pregnancy in the meantime?” a counselor named “Rebecca” offers the woman, who is purportedly still in her first trimester and cannot be certain about the gender. “The abortion covers you up until 23 weeks,” explains Rebecca, “and usually at 5 months is usually (sic) when they detect, you know, whether or not it’s a boy or a girl.” Doctors agree that the later in term a doctor performs an abortion, the greater the risk of complications.

The Planned Parenthood staffer suggests that the woman get on Medicaid in order to pay for an ultrasound to determine the gender of her baby, even though she plans to use the knowledge for an elective abortion. She also tells the woman to “just continue and try again” for the desired gender after aborting a girl, and adds, “Good luck, and I hope that you do get your boy.”

“The search-and-destroy targeting of baby girls through prenatal testing and abortion is a pandemic that is spreading across the globe,” notes Lila Rose, founder and president of Live Action. “Research proves that sex-selective abortion has now come to America. The abortion industry, led by Planned Parenthood, is a willing participant.”

Six studies in the past four years indicate that there are thousands of “missing girls” in the U.S., many from sex-selective abortion. The U.K., India, Australia, and other countries ban sex-selective abortion, but the U.S., save for three states, does not. On Wednesday, Congress will debate the Prenatal Non-Discrimination Act (PRENDA), which would ban sex-selective abortions nationally.

“Planned Parenthood and their ruthless abortion-first mentality is the real ‘war on women’,” says Rose. “Sex-selective abortion is gender discrimination with lethal consequences for little girls.”

The complete, unedited video and transcript can be viewed at http://www.ProtectOurGirls.com, a hub of research and information on sex-selective abortions.

Live Action is a youth led movement dedicated to building a culture of life and ending the human rights abuse of abortion. They use new media to educate the public about the humanity of the unborn and investigative journalism to expose threats against the vulnerable and defenseless.

Francis Schaeffer saw the issues that our society would be facing in the future because of humanism and he was right on just about everything. Take a look at some of his quotes below: (By the way one of my favorite quotes is the first one listed below.)

“We must realize that the Reformation world view leads in the direction of government freedom. But the humanist world view with inevitable certainty leads in the direction of statism. This is so because humanists, having no god, must put something at the center, and it is inevitably society, government, or the state.”
― Francis A. Schaeffer
“The Christian in the one whose imagination should fly beyond the stars.”
― Francis A. Schaeffer, Art & the Bible
“Biblical orthodoxy without compassion is surely the ugliest thing in the world.”
― Francis A. Schaeffer
“The Bible is clear here: I am to love my neighbor as myself, in the manner needed, in a practical way, in the midst of the fallen world, at my particular point of history. This is why I am not a pacifist. Pacifism in this poor world in which we live — this lost world — means that we desert the people who need our greatest help.”
― Francis A. Schaeffer
“To fail to exhibit that we take truth seriously at those points where there is a cost in our doing so, is to push the next generation in the relative, dialectical millstream that surrounds us. ”
― Francis A. Schaeffer
“A Christian should use these arts to the glory of God, not just as tracts, mind you, but as things of beauty to the praise of God. An art work can be a doxology in itself.”
― Francis A. Schaeffer, Art & the Bible
“The tree in the field is to be treated with respect. It is not to be romanticized as the old lady romanticizes her cat (that is, she reads human reactions into it). . . . But while we should not romanticize the tree, we must realize that God made it and it deserves respect because he made it as a tree. Christians who do not believe in the complete evolutionary scale have reason to respect nature as the total evolutionist never can, because we believe that God made these things specifically in their own areas. So if we are going to argue against evolutionists intellectually, we should show the results of our beliefs in our attitudes. The Christian is a man who has a reason for dealing with each created thing on a high level of respect.”
― Francis A. Schaeffer, Pollution & the Death of Man
“The basic problem of the Christians in this country in the last eighty years or so, in regard to society and in regard to government, is that they have seen things in bits and pieces instead of totals.”
― Francis A. Schaeffer, A Christian Manifesto
“A compassionate open home is part of Christian responsibility, and should be practiced up to the level of capacity.”
― Francis A. Schaeffer
“The ancients were afraid that if they went to the end of the earth they would fall off and be consumed by dragons. But once we understand that Christianity is true to what is there, true to the ultimate environment – the infinite, personal God who is really there – then our minds are freed. We can pursue any question and can be sure that we will not fall off the end of the earth.”
― Francis A. Schaeffer, Art & the Bible
“How should an artist begin to do his work as an artist? I would insist that he begin his work as an artist by setting out to make a work of art.”
― Francis A. Schaeffer, Art & the Bible
“In face of this modern nihilism, Christians are often lacking in courage. We tend to give the impression that we will hold on to the outward forms whatever happens, even if God really is not there. But the opposite ought to be true of us, so that people can see that we demand the truth of what is there and that we are not dealing merely with platitudes. In other words, it should be understood that we take this question of truth and personality so seriously that if God were not there we would be among the first of those who had the courage to step out of the queue.”
― Francis A. Schaeffer
“‎People have presuppositions… By ‘presuppositions’ we mean the basic way that an individual looks at life- his worldview. The grid through which he sees the world. Presuppositions rest upon that which a person considers to be the truth of what exists. A person’s presuppositions provide the basis for their values- and therefore the basis for their decisions.”
― Francis A. Schaeffer
“Most people catch their presuppositions from their family and surrounding society, the way that a child catches the measles. But people with understanding realize that their presuppositions should be *chosen* after a careful consideration of which worldview is true.”
― Francis A. Schaeffer, How Should We Then Live? The Rise and Decline of Western Thought and Culture

Thank you so much for your time. I know how valuable it is. I also appreciate the fine family that you have and your commitment as a father and a husband.

Gene Chizik does a great job at Little Rock Touchdown Club Part 3

Gene Chizik does a great job at Little Rock Touchdown Club Part 3

I thought Chizik did a great job at the Little Rock Touchdown Club on Sept 30, 2013. He talked a lot about his faith and this story below shows how much he cares about reaching out to those who need help. One thing he said that greatly interested us hog fans was about the 3 things you need to get a national title. 1. A great QB. 2. Some Luck. 3. Great Team Chemistry.

I had wondered why Tennessee did not get a national title that year that Peyton Manning came back for his senior year or why Florida did not get one the year that Tim Tebow came back for his senior year. They both were great quarterbacks!!! The reason is very simple and that is they did not have the luck that the Vols and Gators had when they did win the national title. Think about Florida against Arkansas in the SEC Championship game in 2006 and they are down in the fourth quarter and the Gators have to punt the ball away to Arkansas but then Reggie Fish of Arkansas fumbles the ball and Florida gets a touchdown that puts them ahead.

In 1998 which was one year after Manning graduated from Tennessee the Vols are 8-0 but down to Arkansas with less than 2 minutes in the game and Arkansas is driving in Tennessee territory. However, Arkansas fumbles and the Vols come back and score the winning touchdown to win 28-24 over my hogs!!!

You got to have all three of these things that Chizik spoke about to get a national title!!!!

Mission trip to Liberia life-altering experience for Auburn players

Email
gene-chizik-scrimmage.jpgGene Chizik talks to his team after Saturday’s scrimmage (Todd Van Emst, Auburn).

AUBURN, Alabama — The mission was to help others, but Auburn coach Gene Chizik had something more in mind when he decided to take seven veteran players to Liberia over spring break.

Chizik’s goal was to expand their horizons beyond the day-to-day grind of college and football.

“It was very eye-opening,” Chizik said. “The group of young men got a great experience of what life is like outside the United States.”

Based on awed comments from players who returned from Africa last month and dived immediately into spring football, the trip accomplished its purpose.

“It was a great experience. You really can’t put it into words,” said linebacker Daren Bates. “The people there probably saw us as helping them, but they really were helping each and every one of us.

“It was amazing. I never thought I’d be able to go overseas like that to Africa, but it was a blessing to go.”

Bates, receiver Emory Blake, quarterback Clint Moseley, defensive back T’Sharvan Bell, offensive lineman John Sullen and defensive linemen Ken Carter and Dee Ford accompanied Chizik and his wife, Jonna, to the West African country. Auburn team chaplain Chette Williams and his wife, Lakeba, helped organize the trip.

It’s the second time that Chizik and Williams have taken players on a spring mission. Two years ago, they went to the Dominican Republic.

The athletic department did nothing to publicize the trip to Africa. A request for photos to accompany a story was politely turned down. Without player comments on Twitter and other social media, Chizik and his crew might have traveled there in anonymity.

The Auburn group worked on the ground with Samaritan’s Purse, which describes itself as an international Christian relief and evangelism organization that “provides spiritual and physical aid to victims of war, poverty, natural disaster and disease.”

Liberia, which was founded by freed slaves from the United States, is still recovering from a bloody civil war that ended in 2003.

Even so, players found Liberians warm and welcoming.

“It was experiencing the different culture that lives a completely different way than we do,” Chizik said. “The overall mission of the trip was to let them realize and understand that we all have hard times, but there’s a bunch of people out there that have got it much more difficult than we do. And that was made very loud and clear.”

Bates said he’d never been outside the country, but didn’t hesitate when Williams asked him to come on the trip.

“I said yes right on the spot,” Bates said. “I couldn’t pass that up. I had to go.”

He said he was inspired by the people he met.

“Every place we went, it opened our eyes,” Bate said. “From what we have over here in America and going to Africa and see what they struggle with and the pride and the ability they have to get up every morning to go to work to make money or get food for their family, I can’t even put a perspective on it.”

Moseley said he’d scarcely been out of Alabama, so Africa “was a culture shock at first,” but he ended the week with a life-altering experience.

“I can’t really explain it or do it justice. It’s the best trip I’ve ever taken, for sure,” he said. “It really doesn’t register in your mind until you actually see it.”

One girl who described her 2-mile daily trek to get clean water stuck in his mind.

“She was just telling us that, not crying or wanting pity,” Moseley said. “That really made me think about we have it really good over here.”
