Open letter to President Obama (Part 650) (Emailed to White House on July 22, 2013)

President Obama c/o The White House

Washington, DC 20500

Dear Mr. President,

I know that you receive 20,000 letters a day and that you actually read 10 of them every day. I really do respect you for trying to get a pulse on what is going on out here.

In 1980 I read the book FREE TO CHOOSE by Milton Friedman and it really enlightened me a tremendous amount.  I suggest checking out these episodes and transcripts of Milton Friedman’s film series FREE TO CHOOSE: “The Failure of Socialism” and “What is wrong with our schools?”  and “Created Equal”  and  From Cradle to Grave, and – Power of the Market. In this episode “The Tyranny of Controls” Milton Friedman shows how government planning and detailed control of economic activity lessens productive innovation and consumer choice.

In this episode Milton Friedman asserts:

I think the United States would prosper in a way that is hardly imaginable today. It would be an example and a beacon to the rest of the world. What kind of sense does it make, here we are supposedly the leaders of the world. We are the ones who promote freedom, and free enterprise, and individual initiative. And what do we do? We force puny little Hong Kong to impose limits, restrictions on its exports at tariffs, in order to protect our textile workers. We go to Japan, and we say to Japan, “For God sakes, you got to limit the number of television sets you come out.” Instead of doing that, we ought to be setting an example to the world, and if we set the kind of an example to the world that Great Britain set to the world in the 19th century, it would be a tremendous __ it would have a tremendous impact, it would strengthen our moral position in the world, it would strengthen our ethical position in the world.

Milton Friedman’s Free to Choose – Ep.2 (6/7) – The Tyranny of Control

McKENZIE: How close are you to what Deason was saying a moment ago in this area? He would seem to be arguing with you that there was a responsibility to make competition work.

FRIEDMAN: The responsibility is to set up a framework of laws and of arrangements, under which competition will flourish. And the most __

McKENZIE: Inevitably flourish? I mean, or __

FRIEDMAN: Well, so far as I know, I don’t know of any case in history in which monopolies have been able to maintain themselves for very long without having government assistance directly come in on their side. The trade union monopolies that Mr. Deason represents would never have the kind of power they do now if it weren’t for the special privileges which government has granted to them. I can perfectly well understand his being in favor of such action, of antitrust action by the government, because it really is pro-monopoly action, in the main.

DEASON: Why were those exemptions to monopoly laws given to unions?

FRIEDMAN: Because of the political power of unions, of course. I’m not questioning that.

DEASON: and because __ and because of the tremendous imbalance of power of companies at the time that unions were getting their start.

McKENZIE: There’s one concluding idea toward the end of your script that I’d like to look at, because it seemed to me to be most provocative. You talked about the need for constitutional restraints on governments to prevent them interfering in foreign exchange free markets, and in foreign trade. Now what have you in mind, Milton, when you say “constitutional restraints”?

FRIEDMAN: I __ no doubt what I have in mind if I, if I could persuade the public, I would like it to adopt a constitutional amendment strictly parallel to the constitutional prohibition in the text of the constitution, against the central government __ I’m sorry, against state governments imposing tariffs on imports. I would like to have a constitutional amendment which would read, “The Congress shall not impose any taxes, any taxes on imports, or give any subsidies to exports, except such as may be necessary,” I think the wording of the constitution is that the states are permitted to do it if it’s necessary for inspection. That’s the excuse under which California inspects you every time you drive past to see whether you’re carrying any plants or fruits or vegetables.

DEASON: Milton, let me ask you a question: How long do you think that the United States would survive if the United States enacted what you would like to have?

FRIEDMAN: I think the United States would prosper in a way that is hardly imaginable today. Instead of giving money to underdeveloped countries to produce products which we then refuse to buy and don’t let them export to us, we would be saying to the rest of the world, “If you produce anything, if you can produce anything and have a market here, come, we’re delighted to buy it, and we’ll produce things for you to buy.” That’s the kind of a pattern I would like to see the United States establish.

McKENZIE: Would your members buy that?

DEASON: Never. That’s a __

FRIEDMAN: Never is a long word, sir.

DEASON: Yes, you’re right.

FRIEDMAN: __ and you must distinguish between __

DEASON: And one should never say never.

FRIEDMAN: Your union officials would not buy it. But I am not sure your members wouldn’t.

DEASON: My members would not. No. My members would never buy it either. I cannot conceive of the United States setting itself up to become a target for the rest of the world.

FRIEDMAN: It’s not a target.

DEASON: There would be absolutely nothing that would require or compel any other country to enact any reciprocal agreements relative to tariffs__

FRIEDMAN: That’s right.

DEASON: __ and until such time as they have succeeded in dumping in the United States __ and I used dumping in the broadest sense of the word __ any and every product, either government subsidized by a foreign government, either put there because of multinational corporations manufacturing facilities in a foreign country, until they have succeeded in absolutely draining us dry __

FRIEDMAN: Draining us dry of what?

DEASON: Of every __ of every asset.

FRIEDMAN: How?

DEASON: Of every __

FRIEDMAN: What would they do with the dollars they got?

DEASON: They’d probably buy up, as they are now, as they __

FRIEDMAN: If they bought up __

RUMSFELD: The choice farmland.

FRIEDMAN: Yes. Yes.

McKENZIE: Let’s broaden this. On this very argument, now and a constitutional amendment argument. We’ve learned from our union friend he would __ can’t sell it and won’t sell it. Would business buy it?

RUMSFELD: Oh, no! They __ speaking __ (Several people talking at once.)

RUMSFELD: I’m not saying whether I’d buy it. No, no, but if business would help, which is the question. No, when I __ I speak not as a businessman, but as an ex-government employee, whenever proposals like that came up, one of the first things people see happen is government __ business and labor come in in lockstep, saying, “Horrors, horrors, the sky is falling.” There’s a commonality of interests there and people get used to what is, they get terribly conservative, and they know how to work the system the way it exists, and particularly the big unions and the big business, and they get very satisfied with it, they can manage it pretty well, and any time you try to unravel any kind of regulation or restriction or government intrusion, they’re philosophically for it, but in the practical world, they don’t want you to change the drill, they just figured out how to work this. Why should you then change it and make it all the more complicated. No, I think you’d get a good deal of reaction, just like you did out of the steel company in your television show.

McKENZIE: And what would the international reaction, do you think, as an international economist. Supposing Milton got his amendment, constitutional amendment, which had that effect, how would other countries react to it?

Katheryn Elizabeth “Katy” Hudson[1] (born October 25, 1984), known by her stage name Katy Perry, is an American singer, songwriter, businesswoman, philanthropist, and actress. She was born and raised in Santa Barbara, California. Having had very little exposure to mainstream pop music in her childhood, she pursued a career in gospel music as a teen and released her debut studio album, Katy Hudson (2001). She also recorded a second solo album which never received release.

In 2007, Perry signed a recording contract with Capitol Records and adopted her current stage name. The following year, she came to prominence with her second studio album and first mainstream release, One of the Boys (2008), which produced singles “I Kissed a Girl“, “Hot n Cold“, “Thinking of You” and, “Waking Up in Vegas“. The project was further promoted through the Hello Katy Tour. Perry’s third record, Teenage Dream (2010), spawned the Billboard Hot 100 chart-topping singles “California Gurls“, “Teenage Dream“, “Firework“, “E.T.” and “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)“. In doing so, it became the first album recorded by a female artist in history to produce five number-one hits, and the second album overall behind Michael Jackson‘s Bad (1987). Perry embarked on the California Dreams Tour following its release. In 2012, it was reissued as Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection and contained the number-one single “Part of Me“. Her fourth album, Prism, which contains the Billboard Hot 100 number 1 single “Roar“, is expected to be released October 22, 2013.

Perry has received numerous awards and nominations. She has also been nominated for nine Grammy Awards and was named by Billboard as 2012’s Woman of the Year.[2] She remains the only artist to spend 69 consecutive weeks in the top ten of the Hot 100.[3] She has ventured into celebrity endorsement and released fragrances Purr, Meow and Killer Queen. She made her film debut voicing Smurfette in The Smurfs (2011). Perry was ranked at number fourteen on Billboard’s list of top moneymakers of 2011, grossing more than $11 million.[4] She was spotlighted in her own 3D autobiographical film, Katy Perry: Part of Me (2012), which concentrated on her life as a touring artist and the breakdown of her one-year marriage to English comedian Russell Brand.

Early life

Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson was born in Santa Barbara, California,[5] to devout Pentecostal pastors Keith Hudson and Mary Perry. She is the second of their three children,[6] and has Irish, Portuguese, English, and German ancestry.[7] She has a younger brother named David (whose stage name is Hudson)[8] and an older sister named Angela. Her mother’s half-brother was director Frank Perry.[9]

As a child, Perry attended Christian schools and camps.[6] She was incorporated into her parents’ ministry,[6] singing in the church between the ages of nine and seventeen.[10] She grew up listening to gospel music,[11][12] and in an interview she said, “Growing up I wasn’t really allowed to listen to a whole lot of what my mom would call, secular music,”[10] She learned how to dance in a recreation building in Santa Barbara. She was taught by seasoned dancers and began with swing, Lindy Hop, and jitterbug.[13] She took her GED during her freshman year at Dos Pueblos High School and decided to leave school in the pursuit of a career in music.[14] Perry initially started singing “because [she] was at that point in [her] childhood where [she] was copycatting [her] sister and everything she [would do].”[14] She took cassette tapes her sister Angela practiced with and rehearsed the songs and performed them in front of their parents. They suggested she take vocal coaching. She grabbed the opportunity and began taking lessons at the age of nine and continued until she was sixteen.

Career

At 15, Perry’s singing in church attracted the attention of rock veterans from Nashville, Tennessee, who brought her there to polish her writing skills.[15] In Nashville, she started recording demos and was taught by country music veterans how to craft songs and play guitar.[10][12] Perry signed to the Christian music label Red Hill, under which she recorded her first album.[16] Performing as Katy Hudson, she released a self-titled gospel rock album in 2001.[15] She supported this album with The Strangely Normal Tour, accompanied by Phil Joel, LaRue, Luna Halo, Earthsuit and V*Enna.[17] The album was unsuccessful as the label ceased operations at the end of 2001.[16]

At the age of 17, Perry left her home for Los Angeles, where she worked with Glen Ballard on an album for Island Records.[18] Growing up listening to mostly Country Gospel, she had few references when she began recording songs.[10] Asked by the producer with whom she would like to collaborate, Perry had no idea. That night, she went with her mother to a hotel. Inside, she turned on VH1 and saw producer Glen Ballard talking about Alanis Morissette;[10] Ballard produced Morissette’s Jagged Little Pill, which had a “huge influence” on her.[15] She expressed interest in working with Ballard to her initial collaborator, who arranged a meeting for her with Ballard in Los Angeles. Perry presented one of her songs to Ballard, who then helped develop her songwriting over the next few years.[10] The album was initially planned to be released during the Fall of 2004 along with a promotional DVD, according to a promotional video on the Java Records website.[19] The album was due for release in 2005,[15][16] but Billboard reported it also went nowhere.[16] Subsequently, Perry was dropped by The Island Def Jam Music Group.[20] Some of her collaborations with Ballard, including “Box”, “Diamonds”, and “Long Shot”, were posted on her official MySpace page.[21] “Simple”, one of the songs she recorded with Ballard, was released on the soundtrack to the 2005 film The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants.[22][23]

Kelly Clarkson later used “Long Shot” and “I Do Not Hook Up” for her 2009 album All I Ever Wanted.[24] Perry signed to Columbia Records in 2004. However, the label was not amenable with her vision and did not put her in the “driver’s seat”.[16] Instead, one of Columbia’s ideas was to pair her with the record production team The Matrix, who was working on an album, to serve as its female vocalist. Although the album was later shelved,[25] she caught the attention of the music press. Her burgeoning music career led to her being named “The Next Big Thing” in October 2004 by Blender magazine.[16] With no album project ongoing, Perry began recording her own, titled Fingerprints.[26] Eighty percent completed, however, Columbia decided not to finish it and dropped her from the label.[16] In 2004, Perry and Kaya Jones provided backing vocals on Mick Jagger‘s song “Old Habits Die Hard“, which won the 2005 Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song.[27] While waiting to find another label, she worked in an independent A&R company called Taxi Music. In 2006, she was featured in the tail-end of the video to P.O.D.‘s single “Goodbye for Now“.[28]

2007—09: Breakthrough with One of the Boys

While in the process of being dropped by Columbia in 2006, the company’s publicity executive Angelica Cob-Baehler enthusiastically recommended her to Virgin Records chairman Jason Flom.[29] At the time Flom was leading a complete revival in fortunes at the label and looking to crown recent achievements by breaking a global pop act.[29] Despite mixed reactions from fellow Virgin executives, Flom became convinced that Perry could be that breakthrough star and, at the start of 2007, extended discussions with Columbia resulted in her signing to the newly created Capitol Music Group, a merger between Virgin and Capitol. As part of the deal, the label secured the masters to the unfinished album, recorded while at Columbia, that would go on to form a significant part of her official mainstream debut album, One of the Boys.[29]

The Columbia recordings were seen by Flom as being “very strong but lacking an undeniable smash or two that would work both at U.S. pop radio and internationally” and so one of the executive’s first actions after completing the signing was to set up a collaboration between Perry and the writer-producer Dr. Luke.[29] The results were the songs “I Kissed a Girl” and “Hot n Cold“. Establishing her image was one of the immediate concerns of her management.[16] A campaign was started in November 2007 with the release of the video to “Ur So Gay“, aimed at introducing her to the music market. A digital EP led by “Ur So Gay” was later released to create online buzz and press story.[6][16][30] This was a successful move that brought Perry to the attention of Madonna,[16] who mentioned her on KISS FM and KRQ‘s JohnJay & Rich morning show in Arizona. On March 10, 2008, she appeared as herself on the ABC Family television series, Wildfire, on the episode “Life’s Too Short“.[31]

In the next step of promoting the album, Perry undertook a two-month tour of radio stations. “I Kissed a Girl”, was released on May 6, 2008. Her A&R, Chris Anokute, told HitQuarters the song and its controversial theme had met with strong resistance at the label: “People said, ‘This is never going to get played on the radio. How do we sell this? How’s this going to be played in the bible belt?'”[30] Anokute said that they needed the support of one of the label’s radio promoters to convince people to believe in the record; otherwise, she would have likely been dropped again. Capitol’s SVP of Promotions, Dennis Reese, saw the vision and helped push the single on national radio. The first station to pick it up and take a chance was The River in Nashville, which is in the Bible Belt. After playing it for three days they were inundated with enthusiastic calls.[30] With the song climbing atop the charts, Perry embarked on the annual Warped Tour music festival, which her management used to “establish her as a credible performer and make sure she wasn’t seen as just a one-hit wonder.”[16] The single was a commercial success, peaking at number one for seven weeks on the Billboard Hot 100.[16] On June 12, 2008, she appeared as herself on the daytime soap opera The Young and the Restless,[31] posing for the cover to the June 2008 issue of the fictional magazine Restless Style.[32] Perry also performed backing vocals on the song, “Another Night in the Hills” from Gavin Rossdale‘s 2008 solo album Wanderlust.[33]

One of the Boys was released on June 17, 2008, to mixed critical reviews.[34] The album has reached number nine on the Billboard 200,[35] and has been certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America.[36] “Hot n Cold” became her second top three single in dozens of countries around the world, including the United States where it reached number three on the Billboard Hot 100,[16] as well as topping the charts in Germany, Canada, and Denmark. After Perry wrapped up her appearance at the Warped Tour, she went on tours in Europe. She later launched her first headlining tour, the Hello Katy Tour, in January 2009.[16] “I Kissed a Girl” earned her a nomination for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance at the 2009 Grammy Awards.[37] She was nominated in five categories at the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards, including Best New Artist and Best Female Video, but lost to Britney Spears.[38] She won Best New Act at the 2008 MTV Europe Music Awards, which she co-hosted,[39] and Best International Female Artist at the 2009 BRIT Awards.[40] On February 9, 2009, both “I Kissed a Girl” and “Hot n Cold” were certified three-time platinum by Recording Industry Association of America for individual digital sales of over three million.[41] The Guinness Book of World Records recognized her in its 2010 version as the “Best Start on the US Digital Chart by a Female Artist,” for having her first two singles sell over two million digital copies.[42]

Perry in 2009

The Matrix’s self-titled debut album, which features Perry, was later released via the team’s label “Let’s Hear It” during her solo tour. When the release date was scheduled, “I Kissed a Girl” had been charting well. Matrix member Lauren Christy spoke to Perry about the decision, but she wanted to hold the release until the fourth single of One of the Boys had been dispatched. Despite their communication, The Matrix was released on January 27, 2009 onto iTunes.[43] In January 2009, Perry embarked on her first headlining world tour, the Hello Katy Tour, visiting North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. Beginning on January 23, 2009, and ending on November 28, 2009, the tour consisted of 89 concerts. During that time, she also opened select concerts for the band No Doubt, on their Summer Tour 2009.

In June 2009, lawyers acting for Perry opposed the then-recent trademark of Australian fashion designer Katie Perry, who uses her own name to market loungewear.[44] Some media outlets reported this as a lawsuit, which she denied on her blog.[45] Katie Perry reported on her blog that at a hearing with IP Australia on July 10, 2009, the singer’s lawyers withdrew their opposition to the trademark.[46] During the summer of 2009, Perry filmed a cameo appearance for Get Him to the Greek; her scene, in which she kisses Russell Brand was cut, and does not appear in the film. Discussing the issue with MTV, she hypothesized there may have been some fear that seeing the two make out would have taken viewers out of the experience.[47] In 2009, she was featured on two singles: in August, a remix of Colorado-based band 3OH!3‘s song “Starstrukk” (the idea for the collaboration having come after Perry’s tour that featured 3OH!3 as the supporting act, the song being released by iTunes on September 8, 2009); and, thereafter, in December, on “If We Ever Meet Again” from Timbaland‘s album Shock Value II.[48] In October 2009, MTV Unplugged revealed that Perry was one of the artists to perform for them, and that she would be releasing a live album of the performance, including two new tracks, “Brick by Brick” and a cover “Hackensack” by Fountains of Wayne.[49] The album, released on November 17, included both a CD and a DVD,[50] and debuted at No. 168 on the US Billboard 200 chart.

2010—12: Teenage Dream, film debut, and Part of Me

Perry appeared as a guest judge alongside Simon Cowell, Cheryl Cole, and Louis Walsh during the Dublin audition stage of the seventh series of the British television show The X Factor on June 28, 2010.[51] She was one of the many celebrities chosen to fulfill the role of judge whilst Dannii Minogue was on maternity leave. Perry’s third studio album Teenage Dream was released on August 24, 2010, in the United States. It topped the Billboard 200 chart, with first-week sales of 192,000 units.[52] The album has since sold over two million copies in the US, being certified Platinum by the RIAA. It was preceded by the May release of its lead single, titled “California Gurls” featuring rapper Snoop Dogg, which picked atop the Billboard Hot 100 for six consecutive weeks.[53][54] “Teenage Dream” was released in July as the album’s second single, and also topped the Hot 100. In October, “Firework” was released as the third single from Teenage Dream. It became the album’s third consecutive number one on the Hot 100. As a result, she became the first female in eleven years to have three consecutive number-ones from a single album.[55]

In November 2010, she released her first fragrance Purr. It is packaged in a cat-shaped bottle, and is available through Nordstrom stores.[56] In February 2011, Perry embarked on an extensive world tour in support of Teenage Dream. It was titled the California Dreams Tour and including 124 shows in Europe, Australasia, Asia, North America and South America. It earned over $59 million.[57] That same month, a remixed version of “E.T.” featuring rapper Kanye West was released as the fourth single from Teenage Dream. It topped the Hot 100 chart for five non-consecutive weeks.[58] With “E.T.” at number one on the chart of May 12, 2011, Perry became the first artist to spend 52 consecutive weeks in the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100.[3] In June, the album’s fifth single “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” topped the Hot 100. This allowed her to achieve a record for being the first female to achieve five number one Hot 100 songs from one album, and she tied with Michael Jackson‘s record. Additionally, Teenage Dream boasted a record-breaking six number-one songs on Billboard Adult Pop Songs chart.[59] In October, “The One That Got Away” was released as the sixth single from Teenage Dream, peaking at three on the Hot 100. Teenage Dream became the third album in history to produce six top five hit singles,[60] “The One That Got Away” became the album’s seventh track to reach the top of the US Hot Dance Club Songs chart, the most by any album and setting a new record in the chart.[61]

In July 2011, she made her film debut in the 3D family film The Smurfs as Smurfette. The Smurfs earned $557,771,535 worldwide during its theatrical run, though received many negative reviews from critics. The week of September 17, 2011 marked Perry’ 69th consecutive week in the Top 10 with single “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)”.[62][63] On September 23, 2011, she performed, along with Elton John, Brazilian Claudia Leitte, and friend Rihanna, on the opening day of the 2011 Rock in Rio festival, which was extended to October 2.[64] She performed for 100 thousand people, a show that received high praise from critics and audience alike.[65] Perry hosted Saturday Night Live on December 10, 2011 with Robyn serving as the episode’s musical guest. Perry’s work on the episode received generally positive reviews from critics, who praised her comedic timing and the episode’s digital short which featured Perry and Andy Samberg, however some critics noted that Perry’s performance in the episode was overshadowed by cast regular Kristen Wiig.[66] Her second fragrance Meow was released December 2011.[67] Also in December, she was elected the Artist of the Year by MTV, for their performance on the charts worldwide and won the record during the year.[68] Also that month, she revealed plans to release a Barbie doll that represents her style.[69][70]

On January 5, 2012, Perry was named the sixth best-selling digital artist in the United States, with sales of 37.6 million units according to Nielsen SoundScan.[71] That month, she became the first artist to have five songs sell over 5 million digital units.[72] Later that month, EA Games recruited her to promote their new expansion pack The Sims 3: Showtime.[73] In March 2012, Teenage Dream was re-released under the title Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection. It was preceded by the February release of “Part of Me“, which became the album’s seventh single released and sixth single overall to top the Hot 100.[74] “Wide Awake” was released in May as the album’s eighth and final single, peaking at number two.[75] In June, she revealed plans to launch her own record label, which would be under Capitol Records.[76] In July, her movie Katy Perry: Part of Me was released to theaters under Paramount Pictures.[77][78] It garnered positive critical reviews and grossed $30 million worldwide at the Box Office.[79][80] That September, it was announced that Perry would take home the 2012 “Woman of the Year” Award at Billboard’s Women in Music event, which took place on November 30, 2012 in New York City.[2] She also supported Barack Obama during his campaign for re-election in November 2012.[81]

2013: Prism

Perry told Billboard in late 2012 about her upcoming album: “I know exactly the record I want to make next. I know the artwork, the coloring and the tone….. I even know what type of tour I’m doing next. I’ll be very pleased if the vision I have in my head becomes a reality”. However, Perry mentioned that she does not want the album to be a “Teenage Dream 2.0”, stating: “That would be silly. It’s not of any interest for me to try and outdo myself at every corner. Eventually you just like pop, explode”.[82]. Even though Perry initially said that the record would contain “darker” elements, departing from her previous sound, she later clarified, stating: “There’s not really any darkness on the record, there’s definitely some textures and colors but I think I was saying that when I saw going through a different phase, but I really let that light in”.[83] Diplo,[84] Sia Furler, Klas Åhlund, Greg Kurstin, Dr. Luke, Max Martin, Emeli Sandé, Greg Wells, Juicy J, Sarah Hudson, Cirkut, Stacie Orrico, and Bonnie McKee have collaborated with her on the album.[85] Songs that have been recorded for the album include “Double Rainbow”, [85]Bad Photographs”,[86] “It Takes Two”, “Unconditionally”,[87] “Roar“, “Dark Horse”, “Walking on Air”,[88] “By The Grace of God”, “This is How We Do”, “Ghost”, “International Smile”, “Love Me”,[89] “Legendary Lover”, and “Birthday”.[90]

Perry reprised her role as Smurfette in The Smurfs 2, which was released in theaters on July 31, 2013.[91] Like its predecessor, it received many negative reviews from critics. She released her third fragrance, Killer Queen, in August 2013, through Coty, Inc.[92] On July 29, 2013, it was announced that Perry’s fourth studio album would be titled Prism, and is due for release on October 22, 2013.[93] “Roar” made its debut as the album’s lead single on August 10, 2013.[94] Perry recorded a duet with John Mayer, titled “Who You Love”, for his album Paradise Valley, which was released on August 20, 2013.[95] She closed the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards by performing “Roar” live for the first time on August 25, 2013 in a special performance under the Brooklyn Bridge.[96]

On August 20, 2013, due to Perry teaming up with Pepsi and MTV, fans were given the opportunity to unlock song titles, lyrics, and snippets from Prism by tweeting #KATYNOW. After fans heard the two snippets, they chose which one they wanted to be released in full before the album is released.[97]. The two snippets were “Dark Horse” and “Walking On Air”. On August 25, 2013, at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards, Pepsi announced “Dark Horse” feauturing Juicy J won, 64% to 36%.[98]. The same day, a 21-second teaser of the official “Roar” music video was released.[99]. “Dark Horse” will be released via iTunes on September 17, 2013.[88] Perry later tweeted: “Dark Horse ft Juicy J is just a PREVIEW of #PRISM when released on Sept 17, NOT the 2nd single”.[100] On September 4, 2013, Billboard announced that “Roar” reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100.[101] The official full length music video for “Roar” was released the following day.[102]

Rolling Stone ranked Perry 7th in its global Queen of Pop poll in July 2011.[104] Men’s Health dubbed her the “sexiest woman of 2013”.[105] She is a sex symbol[106] and is known for her unconventional style of dress,[13] which is often humorous, bright in color, reminiscent of different decades, and often includes food-related themes[107][108] such as her trademark peppermint swirl bra.[103] Her transformation into an artist began with fashion, inspired by American film actress Dominique Swain‘s portrayal in the 1997 film Lolita.[15] She defines her fashion style as “a bit of a concoction of different things”.[13] Her fashion has caught the attention of designers.[6]

In June 2008, a photo of her posing with a switchblade was criticized.[109] The picture was defended as only an effort to give her a “sexy, harder edge”.[109] She later posed with a spoon, mocking the criticism.[110]

Perry is Pentecostal and an avid supporter of gay rights. According to Dosomething.org, she voted no on Prop 8 (California’s Nov 4, 2008, amendment declaring that marriage is defined as a union solely between a man and a woman).[111] Through Twitter and by performing at his rallies, Perry supported President Barack Obama in his run for re-election in 2012 due to his stance on same-sex marriage,[112] and believing in “equal rights for all”.[113]

She is also known for philanthropy. In October 2012, she performed “Firework” with a fan who has autism on Comedy Central’s “Night of Too Many Stars”.[114] In early April 2013, she worked with UNICEF to assist children in Madagascar with education and nutrition.[115] Later that month, she appeared in a video clip for the “Chime For Change” campaign that aims to spread female empowerment.[116]

Musical style and themes

Her first album is within the gospel music genre.[6][16] She related that her perspective in music was “a bit enclosed and very strict”, and everything she did was church-related.[6] Her second album, One of the Boys, is described as “secular” and “rock,” and reflects a departure from her religious musical roots.[6] Her next album, Teenage Dream, featured more pop songs in contrast to Boys.[13] Many of her songs have been described as EDM or electropop,[117][118] and she herself has been credited as an electropop artist.[119] In her childhood, Perry was introduced to the music of Alanis Morissette and Freddie Mercury, the late frontman of the English band Queen.[25] In her tribute to Mercury on what would have been his 65th birthday, Perry stated; “Without you I wouldn’t be making music or doing what I do because your lyrics inspired me as a 15 year old girl.”[120] Queen’s song “Killer Queen” inspired her to pursue a career in pop music after her first album.[6] She also described that Morissette’s album Jagged Little Pill as having influenced her music profoundly; even going on to work with Morissette’s collaborator on the album, Glen Ballard because of that.[15] Perry has also listed Madonna as a significant influence, saying “I want to evolve like Madonna.”[121][122]

Perry has a contralto vocal range.[123] She is artistically involved in her projects, especially in the writing process. Since she could play guitar, she would start writing songs at home and present it to her producers. She is mostly inspired by specific moments of her life, and has said it is easy for her to write songs about heartbreak.[10] Most of the themes in One of the Boys deal with heartbreak, teen adventure, and “puking into toilets”.[15] Her mother Mary once reportedly told English tabloid Daily Mail that she disliked her daughter’s music, calling it “shameful and disgusting”.[6][124] She said Mary was misquoted and told MTV that it was false information.[124] Perry has written songs for other singers, including Ashley Tisdale (“Time’s Up”), Selena Gomez & the Scene (“Rock God” and “That’s More Like It”), Jessie James (“Bullet” and “Girl Next Door”) and Lesley Roy (“Slow Goodbye”).

Her songs “Ur So Gay” and “I Kissed a Girl” have been respectively labeled as being homophobic and promoting homosexuality, as well as “lez ploitational“.[6] MTV mentioned criticism about her using “bi-curiosity” as a way to sell records.[124] Perry responded to the controversy surrounding “Ur So Gay”: “It’s not a negative connotation. It’s not, ‘you’re so gay,’ like, ‘you’re so lame,’ but the fact of the matter is that this boy should’ve been gay. I totally understand how it could be misconstrued or whatever….. It wasn’t stereotyping anyone in particular, I was talking about ex-boyfriends.”[125]

Personal life

Perry has had relationships with Justin York,[126] Matt Thiessen, Johnny Lewis,[127] Travie McCoy, and Russell Brand. Since August 2012, she has been in an on-again, off-again relationship with John Mayer.[128]

With Matt Thiessen, she and Glen Ballard wrote several songs during her early recording sessions. Two of the tracks that the three wrote, “Long Shot” and “I Do Not Hook Up“, would go on to be recorded by Kelly Clarkson on her 2009 album All I Ever Wanted.[129] Thiessen also co-wrote the song “Dressin’ Up” from Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection.

She played the love interest of Travie McCoy in the music video for Cupid’s Chokehold by Gym Class Heroes (of which McCoy is the lead singer).[130] He is allegedly the subject of her song “Circle the Drain” from Teenage Dream.[131]

She first met Russell Brand in the summer of 2009 when she filmed a cameo appearance for his film Get Him to the Greek.[132] The two began dating after meeting again in September 2009 at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards.[133] The couple became engaged in December 2009 while vacationing in India.[134] They married on October 23, 2010, in a traditional Hindu ceremony near the Ranthambhore tiger sanctuary in Rajasthan, India.[135] After 14 months of marriage, he filed for divorce on December 30, 2011, citing irreconcilable differences.[136][137] After reaching an agreement on financial issues, a judge granted the divorce request in February 2012. The divorce became effective in July 2012 following a mandatory six-month waiting period.[138] Her autobiographical movie revealed that the disagreement over starting a family led to the end of the marriage.[139] In June 2013, she revealed in an interview with Vogue that Brand divorced her via a text message and never spoke to her again.[86]

“Schaeffer Sunday” The Mark of the Christian by Francis Schaeffer Part 2

The Mark of the Christian by Francis Schaeffer Part 2

THE MARK OF A CHRISTIAN – CLASS 2 – Men & Brothers/A Delicate Balance

Published on Mar 15, 2012

The class was originally taught at Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Overland Park, KS by Dan Guinn from FrancisSchaefferStudies.org as part of the adult Sunday School hour on Mar. 11th, 2012.

This class covers (section headings by Schaeffer) Section 2 – “Men & Brothers”  Section 3 – “A Delicate Balance”

_______________________________

I have several spiritual heroes in my life and Francis Schaeffer was one of those. In the film series “WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE HUMAN RACE?” the arguments are presented  against abortion (Episode 1),  infanticide (Episode 2),   euthenasia (Episode 3), and then there is a discussion of the Christian versus Humanist worldview concerning the issue of “the basis for human dignity” in Episode 4 and then in the last episode a close look at the truth claims of the Bible.
Christians should present the truth in love and that is what Francis Schaeffer’s book “The Mark of the Christian” is about. I have a portion of that book below:
Christians have not always presented a pretty picture to the world.
Loving our brothers and sisters
If Jesus had commanded so strongly that we love all people as our neighbors, then how important it is especially to love our fellow Christians.

If we are told to love all people as our neighbors then surely we can understand how overwhelmingly important it is that all men and women be able to see an observable love for those with whom we have these special ties.

The apostle Paul makes the double obligation clear in Galatians 6:10:

Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.

He does not negate the command to do good to all people. But it is still not meaningless to add, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.

This dual goal should be our Christian mentality, the set of our minds; we should be consciously thinking about it and what it means in our one-moment-at-a-time lives. It should be the attitude that governs our outward observable actions.

A delicate balance Very often the true Bible-believing Christian, in emphasizing two humanities –

one lost, one saved, one still standing in rebellion against God, the other having returned to God through Christ –

has given a picture of exclusiveness which is ugly.

There are two humanities. That is true.

Some men and women made in the image of God still stand in rebellion against him;

some, by the grace of God, have cast themselves upon God’s solution.

Nonetheless, there is in another very important sense only one humanity.

All men and women derive from one origin. By creation, all bear the image of God. In this sense, all people are of one flesh, one blood.

Hence, the exclusiveness of the two humanities is undergirded by the unity of all men and women. And Christians are not to love their believing brothers and sisters to the exclusion of their non-believing fellows. That is ugly. We are to have the example of the good Samaritan consciously in mind at all times.

The first commandment is to love the Lord our God with all our heart, soul, and mind. The second commandment bears the universal command to love people. Notice that the second commandment is not just to love Christians. It is far wider than this. We are to love our neighbor as ourselves.

First Thessalonians 3:12 carries the same double emphasis:

May the Lord make your love increase and overflow for each other and for everyone else, just as ours does for you.

Here the order is reversed. First of all, we are to have love one toward another and then toward everyone else, but that does not change the double emphasis. Rather, it points up the delicate balance – a balance that is not in practice automatically maintained.

For true christians only If we look again at the command in John 13, we will notice some important things.

First of all, this is a command to have a special love to all true Christians, all born-again Christians.

From the scriptural viewpoint, not all who call themselves Christians are Christians, and that is especially true in our generation.

The meaning of the word Christian has been reduced to practically nothing. Surely, there is no word that has been so devalued unless it is the Word of God itself. Central to semantics is the idea that a word as a symbol has no meaning until content is put into it. This is quite correct. Because the word Christian as a symbol has been made to mean so little, it has come to mean everything and nothing.

Jesus, however, is talking about loving all true Christians. And this is a command that has two cutting edges, for it means that we must both distinguish true Christians from all pretenders and be sure that we leave no true Christians outside of our consideration.

But we must be careful of the opposite error.

We must include everyone who stands in the historic-biblical faith whether or not he or she is a member of our own party or our own group.

But even if a person is not among the true Christians, we still have the responsibility to love that one as our neighbor. So we cannot say,

“Now here’s somebody that, as far as I can tell, does not stand among the group of true Christians, and therefore I don’t have to think of him any more; I can just slough him off.”

Not at all. That one is covered by the second commandment.

The quality of our love
The second thing to notice in these verses in John 13 is the quality of the love that is to be our standard. We are to love all Christians

As I have loved you. [Jesus says]

The love he exhibited is to be our standard. We are to love all true Christians as Christ has loved us.

When we consider this, either of two things can happen:

We can just say, “I see! I see!” and we can make a little banner and write on it, “We Love All Christians!” and show it off when anyone looks at us.

How ugly.

Or we can find something exceedingly more profound – something that will take a great deal of time to cultivate; a great deal of thinking and praying about it.

The church is to be a loving church in a dying culture. How, then, is the dying culture going to consider us? Jesus says

by this shall all people know that you are my disciples, if you have love one to another.

In the midst of the world, in the midst of our present culture, Jesus is giving a right to the world. Upon his authority he gives the world the right to judge whether you and I are born-again Christians, on the basis of our observable love toward all Christians.

That’s pretty frightening. Jesus turns to the world and says, “I’ve something to say to you. On the basis of my authority, I give you a right: you may judge whether or not an individual is a Christian on the basis of the love they show to all true Christians.”

In other words, if people come up to us and cast in our teeth the judgment that we are not Christians because we have not shown love toward other Christians, we must understand that they are only exercising a prerogative which Jesus gave them.

And must must not get angry.

If people say, “You don’t love other Christians,” we must go home, get down on our knees, and ask God whether or not what they say is true. And if it is, then they have a right to have said it.

Dealing with failure in love We must be very careful at this point, however.

We may be true Christians, really born-again Christians, and yet fail in our love toward other Christians. As a matter of fact, to be completely realistic, it is stronger than this.

There will be times (and let us say it with tears), when we will fail in our love toward each other as Christians.

In a fallen world, where there is no such thing as perfection ( until Jesus comes), we know this will be the case.

And, of course, when we fail, we must ask God’s forgiveness.

But, Jesus is not here saying that our failure to love all Christians proves that we are not Christians. What Jesus is saying, however, is that, if I do not have the love I should have toward all other Christians, the world has the right to make the judgment that I am not a Christian.

This distinction is a vital one. If we fail in our love toward all Christians, we must not tear our heart out as though it were proof that we are lost. No one except Christ Himself has ever lived and not failed. If success in love toward our brothers in Christ were to be the standard of whether or not a man is a Christian, then there would be no Christians, because all men have failed. But Jesus gives the world a piece of litmus paper, a reasonable thermometer.

There is a mark which, if the world does not see, allows them to conclude, “This person is not a Christian.”

Of course, the world may be making a wrong judgment because if the man is truly a Christian, as far as the reality goes, they made a mistake.

The final apologetic
But there is something even more sober. And to understand it we must look at John 17:21, a verse out of the midst of Christ’s high priestly prayer. Jesus prays,

That all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.

In this, his high priestly prayer, Jesus is praying for the oneness of the church, the oneness that should be found specifically among true Christians. Jesus is not praying for a humanistic, romantic oneness among people in general. Verse 9 makes this clear:

I pray for them. I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me, for they are yours.

Jesus here makes a very careful distinction between those who have cast themselves upon him in faith and those who still stand in rebellion. Hence, in the twenty-first verse, when he prays for oneness, the “they” he is referring to are the true Christians.

Notice, however, that verse 21 says, That all of them may be one… The emphasis, interestingly enough, is exactly the same as in John 13

not for a part of true Christians, but for all Christians

not that those in certain parties in the church should be one, but that all born-again Christians should be one.

Now comes the sobering part:
Jesus goes on in this twenty-first verse to say something that always causes me to cringe. If, as Christians, we do not cringe, it seems to me we are not very sensitive or very honest, because Jesus here gives us the final apologetic.

What is the final apologetic?

That all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.

This is the final apologetic. [our ultimate defense]

In John 13 the point was that, if an individual Christian does not show love toward other true Christians, the world has a right to judge that he or she is not a Christian. Here Jesus is stating something else that is much more cutting, much more profound:

I truly believe that many of the problems we have today in the USA are due to the advancement of humanism in the last few decades in our society. Ronald Reagan appointed the evangelical Dr. C. Everett Koop to the position of Surgeon General in his administration. He partnered with Dr. Francis Schaeffer in making the video below. It is very valuable information for Christians to have.  Actually I have included a video below that includes comments from him on this subject.

Many liberals actually truly do argue for abortion rights over human rights. Prochoice advocate Elizabeth Williams came out and said that on 1-23-13 in her article on Salon. We hear reasons for abortion such as poverty, and  child abuse,  but why not consider adoption? Instead, the political left will stop at nothing to push the pro-abortion agenda. Why not stop and take an honest look at when life begins for the unborn child and when she begins to feel pain?

“Sanctity of Life Saturday” Pro-life Atheist Nat Hentoff: “For years, pro-choice women have told me that it is impossible for a woman to be both pro-life and a feminist, yet I keep meeting women who indeed are both”

Nat Hentoff is an atheist, but he became a pro-life activist because of the scientific evidence that shows that the unborn child is a distinct and separate human being and even has a separate DNA. His perspective is a very intriguing one that I thought you would be interested in. I have shared before many   cases (Bernard Nathanson, Donald Trump, Paul Greenberg, Kathy Ireland)    when other high profile pro-choice leaders have changed their views and this is just another case like those. I have contacted the White House over and over concerning this issue and have even received responses. I am hopeful that people will stop and look even in a secular way (if they are not believers) at this abortion debate and see that the unborn child is deserving of our protection. That is why the writings of Nat Hentoff of the Cato Institute are so crucial.

Yes, There Are Pro-Life Feminists

Occasional

by Nat Hentoff
The Washington Post, October 29, 1994

For years, women who identify themselves as pro-choice have told me with absolute assurance that it is impossible for a woman to be both pro-life and a feminist. Yet, in various parts of the country, I keep meeting women who indeed are both.

Some of them like to quote a heroine of the women’s liberation movement, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, who organized the first women’s rights meeting in 1848. “When we consider that women are treated as property,” Stanton said, “it is degrading to women that we should treat our children as property to be disposed of as we see fit.”

Pro-life feminism has finally achieved mainstream attention in Glamour magazine. Glamour had asked to hear from readers who are pro-life. Three thousand women answered, and as indicated in the February 1994 issue, many of them are feminists who resent the stereotypes of pro-lifers by journalists. Said one of them: “We are painted as fanatical zealots, usually male, and often hung up about sexual matters.”

Also often part of that stereotype is that they are poorly educated. Answering Glamour’s invitation were pro-life women university professors, legal analysts and an organizer of Science Students for Life.

One, a middle-school counselor is “a non-practicing Catholic … who disagrees with her church’s stand against birth control, premarital sex, homosexuality and women as clergy.” She contributes to Amnesty International.

Another voted a straight Democratic ticket until Bill Clinton appeared on the presidential line. (So did a good many pro-choice people I know.) The former Democrat emphasizes that ” abortion denies civil rights to unborn children.”

A woman who became pregnant after being raped at knife point brought the pregnancy to term and then gave the child up for adoption. “It is not a sin to be raped,” she told the magazine, “but it is a sin to kill your child. Killing your child doesn’t help you get over the rape.”

This disdain for self-deception in matters of life and death became familiar to me years ago as I got to know the liveliest group of pro-life feminists in the country — Feminists for Life of America, now headquartered in Washington. Most of those I met in the 1980s were veterans of the civil rights and antiwar movements. One had been arrested 11 times — demonstrating at missile bases and in front of abortion clinics.

With chapters throughout the United States and Canada, Feminists for Life belong to — among other antiviolence organizations — the National Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty. A few years ago, the Minnesota chapter blocked a death penalty measure in that state’s legislature. (And polls have indicated that a majority of pro-lifers at large are against the death penalty.) The credo of Feminists for Life — which hardly fits the media’s coverage of pro-lifers — is: “We oppose all forms of violence, including abortion, euthanasia and capital punishment, as they are inconsistent with the core feminist principles of justice, non-violence and non-discrimination.”

In their characteristically pungent magazine, the American Feminist, they further define themselves: “We believe in a woman’s right to control her body, and she deserves this right no matter where she lives, even if she’s still living inside her mother’s womb.”

Earlier this year, Feminists for Life joined in an unprecedented coalition with such long-established pro-choice groups as Planned Parenthood, the National Organization for Women, the National Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League and the ACLU to fight the “child exclusion provision” in the Clinton welfare plan. The provision allows states to cut off any additional benefits to women who have more children while receiving welfare.

NARAL points out that “putting women into circumstances where they are forced to choose abortion is every bit as wrong as denying women access to abortion services.” Speaking from the pro-life position, Serrin Foster, executive director of Feminists for Life, says that the Clinton welfare plan “would force mothers to chose between aborting pregnancies and accepting further impoverishment for their children.”

While this coalition may form again on matters of urgent common ground, the fundamental differences will remain. In a recent issue of the American Feminist, Barbara Newman makes that division clear: “If it is wrong to kill with guns, bombs, or poison, with the electric chair or the noose, it is most tragically wrong to kill with the physician’s tools.”

But is abortion killing? Newman answers: “Euphemism kills.”

In the film series “WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE HUMAN RACE?” the arguments are presented  against abortion (Episode 1),  infanticide (Episode 2),   euthanasia (Episode 3), and then there is a discussion of the Christian versus Humanist worldview concerning the issue of “the basis for human dignity” in Episode 4 and then in the last episode a close look at the truth claims of the Bible.

“Feedback Friday” Letter to White House generated form letter response August 19, 2014 on Transportation Dept (part 18)

I have been writing President Obama letters and have not received a personal response yet.  (He reads 10 letters a day personally and responds to each of them.) However, I did receive a form letter in an email on August 19, 2014. My email of July 30, 2014 was the one that generated this response. Below is my email and then the form letter I got back in email form from President Obama.

Dear Mr. President,

I know that you receive 20,000 letters a day and that you actually read 10 of them every day, and I recently noted that you even have flown to meet some of these people who have written you.  I really do respect you for trying to get a pulse on what is going on out here. In fact, I was astounded that you have made it a point to reach out to some of those who have written you and have dinner with them. I am hoping that I may fall into that group at some point. I saw the press reports from Kansas City on 7-29-14 on your visit to Arthur Bryant’s BBQ where you had dinner with 4 people who had written you earlier. I want to commend you for choosing such a fine place to eat too. In the South we love our BBQ too.

Abolish the Dept of Transportation and return the responsibility to the States!!!

I’m a big believer in federalism, both as a matter of policy and politics.

So you won’t be surprised that I’ve called for the abolition of the Department of Transportation. On more than one occasion.

But when you’re trying to convince politicians to give up power and money, it takes a lot repetition. So, to paraphrase what Ronald Reagan said to Jimmy Carter, here we go again.

Dan Mitchell Urging Abolition of Department of Transportation

I want to emphasize one part of the interview. I’m agnostic on the issue of whether America as a whole needs more infrastructure spending, but I’m sure some parts of the nation could use more roads.

But that doesn’t mean that Washington should be in charge of that spending.

My colleague at Cato, Chris Edwards, is an expert on these issues. Here’s what he recently wrote about the various schemes in DC to fund more transportation spending with higher taxes.

HTF spending on highways and urban transit adds up to $53 billion a year, while the HTF rakes in $39 billion in revenues, mainly from the federal gasoline tax. That leaves a gap of $14 billion. President Obama wants to fill the gap with corporate tax revenues, but that bad idea is dead on arrival in Congress. Senator Bob Corker (R., Tenn.) has a different idea. His bill, co-sponsored by Senator Chris Murphy (D., Conn.), would hike the federal gas tax by 12 cents per gallon. …Corker’s position is the opposite of conservative. If Tennessee needs more money for roads, it can raise its own gas tax any time it wants.

And here are some of the numbers that Chris put together showing that highway spending has been rising rather than falling.

Elizabeth Nolan Brown of Reason adds more context.

About 27 percent of highway and transit spending currently comes from the federal government, via the HTF, while states kicking in about 38 percent and 35 percent coming from municipalities. The HTF isn’t set to “run dry” in August, as many are reporting, but it did tell states to expect an average 28 percent reduction in aid at that point unless Congress acts. …there’s nothing stopping states from taking this matter into their own hands. Since 2013, seven states have raised fuel levies, reports Reuters… When left a little more to their own devices, it seems states get innovative. They develop localized solutions. They experiment.

Let’s close with one interesting piece of data. The International Institute for Management Development recently published its World Competitiveness Yearbook.

The good news is that the United States maintained its hold on first place. That’s a lot better than we’re doing in the Economic Freedom of the World rankings.

But what’s particularly relevant and fascinating is to see America’s scores in the various sub-components of the Yearbook. The United States may rank only 22 out of 60 nations for government effectiveness, but we beat every nation for infrastructure.

So if we have an “infrastructure crisis” in the United States, it certainly doesn’t show up in either the hard data or the business leader opinion survey that generate those rankings.

P.S. Back in 2011, I shared a couple of serious videos about bitcoin.

On a lighter note, here’s “bitcoin girl” encouraging more people to use this private money.

Here is the response I got from the White House on August 19, 2014:

____________________

The White House, Washington

Dear Everette:

Thank you for writing.  One of the best ways to create good jobs is by rebuilding America’s infrastructure—our roads and bridges, railways and ports, airports and schools, pipelines and water systems, and our power grids and broadband networks.  How well we manage this task will determine how competitive we are in the years ahead, and it will directly influence the quality of life in communities across our country.

Investing in American infrastructure projects makes sense.  In today’s global economy, infrastructure is vital to business and first-class jobs gravitate to first-class infrastructure.  That means our country must build and maintain the most up-to-date transportation systems, power grids, and communications networks in the world.  Doing this will create ladders of opportunity and produce jobs here at home—putting people to work and spurring economic growth.

That’s why earlier this year I launched a new, nationwide competition to build safer roads and bridges, accessible mass transit, better ports and harbors, and faster rail to move both goods and people.  And with the budget I submitted to Congress, we can support millions of jobs across America while promoting a more efficient transportation system.

My Administration will continue collaborating with local and state governments to provide grants for projects that encourage economic activity by generating new jobs and bolstering local businesses.  And by making smart investments, we’ll establish a transportation system that’s resilient and capable of withstanding disasters and the worst impacts of climate change while cutting down on commute times, saving on gas, reducing carbon pollution, and boosting economic development.

Again, thank you for being in touch on this.  The bottom line is we have work to do and workers ready to do it.  Our bridges shouldn’t be old enough to qualify for Medicare, our pipes shouldn’t be collapsing, and our roads shouldn’t be full of potholes—so let’s get started.

Sincerely,

Barack Obama

A Little Café shows the USA the real cost of the Minimum Wage Increase!!!!

A Little Cafe That Sparked a Big Minimum Wage Debate

STILLWATER, Minn.—With its waitress and single cook, its retro-style booths with pale green cushions and its stainless steel wrap-around countertop, the Oasis Cafe could be any local diner in any town in the Midwest.

But what makes the Oasis Cafe different is an extra 35-cent “minimum wage fee” tacked onto each patron’s check.

A patron recently posted a photo of a receipt on Facebook and complained about the fee. The photo quickly went viral, and soon, the Oasis Cafe found itself in the center of the national debate over the minimum wage.

>>> Cafe Adds 35-Cent Surcharge to Offset State’s Minimum Wage Hike

Photo: The Oasis Cafe Facebook

MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough and others talked about it on TV. NBC’s “Today” show did a segment. And thousands weighed in through social media.

All because the Minnesota Legislature voted in May to raise the minimum wage to $8 per hour immediately and to $9.50 by 2017. That won praise from progressives coast-to-coast, including the White House, which is pushing for a $10.10 minimum wage at the federal level.

Oasis Cafe added an extra 35-cent “minimum wage fee” onto each patron’s check.

But the higher minimum wage means higher costs for many businesses in Minnesota, hitting small restaurants and other mom-and-pop shops particularly hard. This is the point Craig Beemer, owner of Oasis, is trying to make with his fee.

Beemer told the St. Paul Pioneer Press that he intended to draw attention to the added costs, but he doesn’t see himself as a political activist even though the higher wage mandate will cost him $10,000 this year.

“I’m not some (tea party) guy making a big stand,” he told the paper last week. “It’s been pretty shocking how this thing has blown up.“

As Milton Friedman noted, ‘The minimum wage law is most properly described as a law saying employers must discriminate against people who have low skills.’

I have put up lots of cartoons from Dan Mitchell’s blog before and they have got lots of hits before. Many of them have dealt with the economy, eternal unemployment benefits, socialism,  Greece,  welfare state or on gun control.

My Cato colleague, Mark Calabria, recently explained how the minimum wage destroys jobs, and I’ve written on several occasions why government-mandated wages can create unemployment by making it unprofitable to hire people with low work skills and/or poor work histories. And I’ve attacked Republicans for going along with these job-killing policies, and also pointed out the racist impact of such intervention.

But this cartoon may be a more effective argument for getting government out of the business of interfering with market forces. It’s simple, direct, and gets the point across. I’m not sure that always happens with my writing.

My former intern, Orphe Divougny, also did a very good job in explaining why politicians shouldn’t interfere with the right of workers and employers to enter into labor contracts.

Open letter to President Obama (Part 649) Pro-life Atheist Nat Hentoff on the question “Should an unborn baby be destroyed if he or she has any genetic defect?”

Open letter to President Obama (Part 649)

(Emailed to White House on 6-12-13.)

President Obama c/o The White House 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW Washington, DC 20500

Dear Mr. President,

I know that you receive 20,000 letters a day and that you actually read 10 of them every day. I really do respect you for trying to get a pulse on what is going on out here. I know that you don’t agree with my pro-life views but I wanted to challenge you as a fellow Christian to re-examine your pro-choice view. Although we are both Christians and have the Bible as the basis for our moral views, I did want you to take a close look at the views of the pro-life atheist Nat Hentoff too.  Hentoff became convinced of the pro-life view because of secular evidence that shows that the unborn child is human. I would ask you to consider his evidence and then of course reverse your views on abortion.

___________________

The Specter Of Pro-Choice Eugenics

Occasional

by Nat Hentoff
The Washington Post, May 25, 1991

The Maryland abortion bill that was passed and signed into law in February was generally described as a “moderate” measure ensuring the women of the state the same rights as Roe v. Wade should that decision be overturned by the Supreme Court.

Another provision of the measure was parental notification before minors can get an abortion. This was a scam, however. The person deciding whether the notification is to be given will be the doctor about to perform the abortion.

There is something quite startling in the law that will gladden the hearts of eugenicists, who are considerable in number — though many are still in the closet. The section on Abortion [Restrictions] Procedures declares that the state is not permitted to interfere — at any stage — in a woman’s decision to terminate a pregnancy if “the fetus is affected by genetic defect or serious deformity or abnormality.”

This means that a viable fetus can be destroyed if he or she has any genetic defect. Although the qualifier, “serious,” precedes “deformity or abnormality,” there is no such restriction on performing an abortion because of “genetic defect.”

Last July, much to the celebration of many disabled people, the president signed the Americans with Disabilities Act. Although it is now unlawful to discriminate against the disabled in many areas of life, the Maryland statute permits the ultimate discrimination against them before they are born.

As the Human Genome Project finds out more and more about how to detect genetic defects, the reasons for this kind of abortion on viable fetuses will accumulate. Even now, with increasingly sophisticated prenatal tests, it is possible to discern a considerable number of genetic defects in a fetus.

As law professor Robert Destro points out, by the letter of the Maryland law, a mother could put to death a fetus diagnosed as having myopia. (There are parents who do want perfect children.) And others might well return a fetus marked with cystic fibrosis or sickle cell anemia.

I expected some strong protests from disability rights groups about this enshrinement of eugenics — particularly since I have heard fears of the brave new world of the genome at disability rights meetings. But so far as I know, there has been silence among these usually forthright activists.

One reason may be that disability rights groups are ambivalent about abortion. Some of the members are pro-choice; others have no firm opinion but do not want to be identified with so controversial a movement and one that often gets a bad press. They figure they have enough problems of their own.

Some of the key disability groups, however, have been willing to oppose euthanasia (as in the Cruzan case) and to support the rights of Baby Does — severely handicapped infants whose parents want to let them slide into eternity. The disabled know that as it becomes easier for society to get rid of expensively imperfect people, they themselves may eventually not be safe from lethal mercy.

One disability rights activist — the feminist writer Anne Finger, herself disabled — is aware of the return of eugenics and the dangers it brings. In an article in the Disability Rag, she tells of having joined an abortion rights group and of offering to speak at a meeting about disability and reproductive rights.

“When I started talking about how the reproductive rights movement was sometimes guilty of exploiting fears about disability when it argued for abortion because of fetal defect, things got really strained. I expected lip service, condescension, liberalism — but certainly not hostility.”

Also at that meeting was a Harvard biology professor, Ruth Hubbard, who has since retired. She was not hostile: “My problems with prenatal screening stem mostly from my concern about how it’s creating eugenic thinking. We act as if we can look at a gene and say, ‘Ah-ha, this gene causes this … disability,’ when in fact the interactions between the gene and the environment are enormously complex. It moves our focus from the environmental causes of disabilities — which are terrifying and increasing daily — to individual genetic ones.”

The pro-choice forces, however, are so intent on removing all obstacles to abortion that eugenics is no specter to them.

Anne Finger remembers the initial, stunning triumph of eugenics in the hospitals and mental institutions of Germany, where so many “defectives” were killed before the beginning of the concentration camps. She is still pro-choice, but she also knows what certain choices can lead to.

“Friedman Friday” FREE TO CHOOSE “Who protects the worker?” Video and Transcript Part 1 of 7 “The best protection for the worker is neither unions nor government. Rather, it is the existence of other employers willing to compete for services of skilled individuals”

FREE TO CHOOSE “Who protects the worker?” Video and Transcript Part 1 of 7

In 1980 I read the book FREE TO CHOOSE by Milton Friedman and it really enlightened me a tremendous amount.  I suggest checking out these episodes and transcripts of Milton Friedman’s film series FREE TO CHOOSE: “The Failure of Socialism” and “What is wrong with our schools?”  and “Created Equal”  and  From Cradle to Grave, and – Power of the Market. Milton Friedman shows in this episode how the worker is best protected and it is not by the government!!!!!!!

Liberals say that the government must step in to help the workers and that the unions must but truly the best opportunity for the worker is increased competition from employers trying to hire him or her. Many times when the government gets involved the most unskilled worker is hurt the most.

In the final analysis, the best protection for the worker is neither unions nor government. Rather, it is the existence of other employers willing to compete for services of skilled individuals.
Milton Friedman makes this point in this episode:
“ In the United States the American Medical Association has for decades been one of the strongest labor unions in the country, keeping down the number of physicians, keeping up the costs of medical care, preventing competition by people from outside the profession with those in it. All, of course, in the name of helping the patient.”
Volume 8 – Who Protects the Worker?
Transcript:

Friedman: People who earn their living in a modern heavy industry seldom engage in the kind of back-breaking toil that was the everyday lot of most workers a century ago. And yet they earn far more. What has produced these improvements? The offhand reaction of most people is likely to be that labor unions are largely responsible for the enormous progress workers have made in the past two centuries. But clearly, at least for the U.S. that cannot be true. After all, in the 19th Century when workers did very well, there were hardly any labor unions at all. And even today, no more than one out of four or five workers is a member of a trade union. And the remainder do very well indeed in achieving the highest level of living in the world. Labor unions do, of course, benefit their members but far from being a key to the development of the modern society. They are a throwback to an earlier pre-industrial era to the agreements among craftsman in the middle ages or to go back even earlier, more than 2000 years ago to the agreement among medical men in Greece.

From the tiny Greece island of Kash, the coast of Asia Minor is four miles away in the mist. Twenty five hundred years ago a hospital and medical school flourished on Kash. The great Hippocrates, the founder of modern medicine, work there. Legend has it that Hippocrates taught his students in the shade of this plain tree. He welcomed anyone who wanted to learn, so long as they paid his fee. There is another legend that St. Paul stood here and preached the Gospel of Christianity. What isn’t legend is that Hippocrates and his followers started medicine on the road forward to becoming a science. When Hippocrates died at the age of 104, or so legend has it, this island was full of medial people, his students and disciples. Competition for custom was fierce. Some 20 years after he died they got together and constructed a code of conduct. They named it the Hippocratic Oath, after their old teacher and master. Every new physician, before he could start practice, came to this spot back here in front of those columns and took the Oath. The oath was full of fine ideals for protecting the patient. But it also had a couple of other things in it. Listen to this one, “I will impart a knowledge of the art to my own self and those of my teachers and to disciples bound by a stipulation and oath according to the law of medicine, but to none others.” Today we’d call that a closed shop. Or listen to this one referring to patients suffering from the agonizing disease of kidney or bladder stones, “I will not cut persons laboring under the stone but will leave this to be done by men who are practitioners of this work.” A nice market sharing agreement between physicians and surgeons. Hippocrates must turn in his grave when a new class of medical men takes that oath. After all, he taught anyone provided only they pay his tuition. He would strongly have objected to the kind of restrictive practices that physicians all over the world have adopted to protect their custom. In the United States the American Medical Association has for decades been one of the strongest labor unions in the country, keeping down the number of physicians, keeping up the costs of medical care, preventing competition by people from outside the profession with those in it. All, of course, in the name of helping the patient.

Without warning, anyone of us may suddenly need medical care. If we do, we want the very best care we can get. But who can give us that care?

It is always a graduate of an expensive medical school who has a union card called a medical license? Or might it be someone like this a trained paramedic working for a private enterprise organization rendering emergency care?

Paramedic: And hopefully we’ll get a very good contract out of that.

Friedman: Many such businesses provide primary care for emergency cases in the United States. This particular paramedic team is attached to a fire department in southern California. They’re good at their job. But it’s not unusual to find local physicians objecting.

Joe Dolphin: They take the Hippocratic Oath here in the United States and they believe that they should be the one that is treating their patient. They should be the one that saves that patient’s life. And if someone else does it, it just kind of interferes with everything that they have been taught.

Friedman: But why should medical care be a monopoly of licensed physicians? Shouldn’t anyone who is capable of providing effective help be free to do so.

Paramedic: I’m going to take your blood pressure here. Okay, any one see him go down?

Friedman: You can be sure that no one would be able to stay in this business very long unless he can demonstrate by performance that he’s doing a good job. Joe Dolphin knows that very well.

Joe Dolphin: We’ve taken some statistical samples of the kind of effectiveness paramedics have in California. Giving an example of that, in one district of California that we serve which is a county which is populated to the extent of 580,000 people. Before the introduction of paramedics, less than 1% of the patients that suffered a cardiac arrest or their heart stopped, lived through their hospital stay and were released from the hospital. But with the introduction of paramedics, just in the first six months of operation, 23% of the people who’s heart stops, are successfully resuscitated and are released from the hospital and go back to productive working society. We think that’s pretty amazing. We think the facts speak for themselves. However, relating that to the medical community is sometimes very difficult. They have ideas of their own.

Paramedics: Respirations 12 and regular by… Looks good to me Dave. How are you reading this down there? Are you guys ready to go? Yeah. It says Code Two. Code Two?

Friedman: Disputes between union and non-union workers are not always as high-minded as between organized medicine and Joe Dolphin.

Carl Sagan vs William Lane Craig (Part 1): Cosmos Is, Was, Will Be?

Published on Mar 17, 2014

William Lane Craig shows despite Carl Sagan’s self-identity as an agnostic, his viewpoint is really atheistic and naturalistic, especially if you claim “The cosmos is all that is, or ever was, or ever will be.” Furthermore, Craig shows through the contingency argument, atheists are presupposing naturalism when they say the universe (despite it being contingent) just is and exists by its own virtue of necessity. I have learned several things about atheists in the last 20 years while I have been corresponding with them. First, they know in their hearts that God exists and they can’t live as if God doesn’t exist, but they will still search in some way in their life for a greater meaning. Second, many atheists will take time out of their busy lives to examine the evidence that I present to them. Third, there is hope that they will change their views.

At the bottom of this post I have listed every post from March and April 2014 that is about Antony Flew, who was arguably the most famous atheist philosopher of the 20th century and his conversion from atheism to theism.

Let’s go over again a few points I made at the first of this post.  My first point is backed up by  Romans 1:18-19 (Amplified Bible) ” For God’s wrath and indignation are revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who in their wickedness REPRESS and HINDER the truth and make it inoperative. For that which is KNOWN about God is EVIDENT to them and MADE PLAIN IN THEIR INNER CONSCIOUSNESS, because God  has SHOWN IT TO THEM,”(emphasis mine). I have discussed this many times on my blog and even have interacted with many atheists from CSICOP in the past.

My second point is that many atheists will take the time to consider the evidence that I have presented to them and will respond. The late Adrian Rogers was my pastor at Bellevue Baptist when I grew up and I sent his sermon on evolution and another on the accuracy of the Bible to many atheists to listen to and many of them did. I also sent many of the arguments from Francis Schaeffer also.

______
Adrian Rogers and his wife Joyce pictured above with former President George Bush at Union University in Tennessee.
_______________
Many of these scholars have taken the time to respond back to me in the last 20 years and some of the names  included are  Ernest Mayr (1904-2005), George Wald (1906-1997), Carl Sagan (1934-1996),  Robert Shapiro (1935-2011), Nicolaas Bloembergen (1920-),  Brian Charlesworth (1945-),  Francisco J. Ayala (1934-) Elliott Sober (1948-), Kevin Padian (1951-), Matt Cartmill (1943-) , Milton Fingerman (1928-), John J. Shea (1969-), , Michael A. Crawford (1938-), (Paul Kurtz (1925-2012), Sol Gordon (1923-2008), Albert Ellis (1913-2007), Barbara Marie Tabler (1915-1996), Renate Vambery (1916-2005), Archie J. Bahm (1907-1996), Aron S “Gil” Martin ( 1910-1997), Matthew I. Spetter (1921-2012), H. J. Eysenck (1916-1997), Robert L. Erdmann (1929-2006), Mary Morain (1911-1999), Lloyd Morain (1917-2010),  Warren Allen Smith (1921-), Bette Chambers (1930-),  Gordon Stein (1941-1996) , Milton Friedman (1912-2006), John Hospers (1918-2011), and Michael Martin (1932-).
Third, there is hope that an atheist will reconsider his or her position after examining more evidence. Twenty years I had the opportunity to correspond with two individuals that were regarded as two of the most famous atheists of the 20th Century, Antony Flew and Carl Sagan.  I had read the books and seen the films of the Christian philosopher Francis Schaeffer and he had discussed the works of both of these men. I sent both of these gentlemen philosophical arguments from Schaeffer in these letters and in the first letter I sent a cassette tape of my pastor’s sermon IS THE BIBLE TRUE? You may have noticed in the news a few years that Antony Flew actually became a theist in 2004 and remained one until his death in 2010. Carl Sagan remained a skeptic until his dying day in 1996.Antony Flew wrote me back several times and in the  June 1, 1994 letter he  commented, “Thank you for sending me the IS THE BIBLE TRUE? tape to which I have just listened with great interest and, I trust, profit.” I later sent him Adrian Rogers’ sermon on evolution too.

Dr. Norman Geisler on even Atheists long for God…

John Paul Sarte –

“I need God…I reached out for religion, I longed for it, it was the remedy. Had it been denied me, I would have invented it myself.” (words, 102, 97).

“Atheism is a cruel, long-term business: I believe that I have gone through it to the end.” – Jean-Paul Sartre.

Before Sartre’s death he is recorded as saying,

“I do not feel that I am the product of chance, a speck of dust in the universe, but someone who was expected, prepared, prefigured. In short, a being whom only a Creator could put here” (National Review, 11 June, 1982, p. 677).
Sigmund Freud speaking of God admitted that

“It would be very nice indeed if there was a God.” There is “a sense of man’s insignificance or impotence in the face of the universe.”

.

Friedrich Nietzsche –

“God is dead. God remains dead. And we have killed him. How shall we, the murderers, of all murderers, comfort ourselves?”

“I hold up before myself the images of Dante and Spinoza (believers), who were better at accepting the lot of solitude….My life now consists in the wish that it might be otherwise…And that somebody might make my ‘truths’ appear incredible to me…”

Thus Spake Zarathustra:

“Unknown one! Speak. What wilt thou, unknown-god?… Do come back With all thy tortures! To the last of all that are lonely, Oh, come back!…
“And the last flame of my heart Up it gloweth unto thee! Oh, come back, Mine unknown God, my pain! My last happiness!…”

David Hume—

“Most fortunately it happens, that since reason is incapable of dispelling these colds, nature herself suffices to that purpose, and cures me of this philosophical melancholy and delirium. I din, I play a game of backgammon, I converse, and am merry with my friends; and when after three or four hour’s amusement, I would return to these speculations, they appear so cold and strained and ridiculous, that I cannot find in my heart to enter into them any farther.”

Walter Kauffman, German American Philosopher,

“Religion is rooted in man’s aspirations to transcend himself…Whether he worships idols or strives to perfect himself, man is the god-intoxicated ape.”

Will Durant, an American writer, historian and philosopher was interviewed by the Chicago Sun-Times.

I survive morally because I was taught the moral code along with religion, while I have discarded the religion, which was Roman Catholicism. You and I are living on a shadow…because we are operating on the Christian ethical code which was given us, unfused with Christian faith…but what will happen with our children…? We are not giving them an ethics warmed up with Christian faith. They are living on the shadow of a shadow.”

Alber Camus

For anyone who is alone, without God and without a master, the weight of days is dreadful” (The Fall, 133).

“… Despite the fact that there is no God, at least the Church must be built” (The Rebel, 147).

Bertrand Russell

“Even when one feels nearest to other people, something in one seems obstinately to belong to God…–at least that is how I should express it if I thought there was a God. It is odd, isn’t it? I care passionately for this world and many things and people in it, and yet…what is it all?” There must be something more important one feels, though I don’t believe there is”

The British Humanist Magazine charged that Humanism is almost “clinically detached from life.” It recommends they develop a humanist Bible, a humanist hymnal, Ten Commandments for humanists, and even confessional practices! In addition,

“the use of hypnotic techniques–music and other psychological devices–during humanist services would give the audience that deep spiritual experience and they would emerge refreshed and inspired with their humanist faith…” (1964).

Jesus felt the sadness too:

“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing.” (Matthew 23:37)

Dear Senator Pryor, here are some spending cut suggestions (“Thirsty Thursday”, Open letter to Senator Pryor)

Senator Pryor pictured below:

Why do I keep writing and emailing Senator Pryor suggestions on how to cut our budget? I gave him hundreds of ideas about how to cut spending and as far as I can tell he has taken none of my suggestions. You can find some of my suggestions here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here,  here, and  here, and they all were emailed to him. In fact, I have written 13 posts pointing out reasons why I believe Senator Pryor’s re-election attempt will be unsuccessful. HERE I GO AGAIN WITH ANOTHER EMAIL I JUST SENT TO SENATOR PRYOR!!!

Dear Senator Pryor,

Why not pass the Balanced  Budget amendment? As you know that federal deficit is at all time high (1.6 trillion deficit with revenues of 2.2 trillion and spending at 3.8 trillion).

On my blog www.thedailyhatch.org . I took you at your word and sent you over 100 emails with specific spending cut ideas. (Actually there were over 160 emails with specific spending cut suggestions.) However, I did not see any of them in the recent debt deal that Congress adopted although you did respond to me several times. Now I am trying another approach. Every week from now on I will send you an email explaining different reasons why we need the Balanced Budget Amendment. It will appear on my blog on “Thirsty Thursday” because the government is always thirsty for more money to spend. Today I actually have included a great article below from the Heritage Foundation concerning an area of our federal budget that needs to be cut down to size. The funny thing about the Sequester and the 2.4% of cuts in future increases is that President Obama set these up and then he acted like the sky was falling in as the cartoons indicate in the newspapers.

IF YOU TRULY WANT TO CUT THE BUDGET AND BALANCE THE BUDGET THEN SUBMIT THESE POTENTIAL BUDGET CUTS PRESENTED BELOW!!

But since I don’t want anyone to accuse me of bias, fans of the Federal Reserve can enjoy this alleged film clip from Ben Bernanke’s childhood.

___________

The Balanced Budget Amendment is the only thing I can think of that would force Washington to cut spending. We have only a handful of balanced budgets in the last 60 years, so obviously what we are doing is not working. We are passing along this debt to the next generation. YOUR APPROACH HAS BEEN TO REJECT THE BALANCED BUDGET “BECAUSE WE SHOULD CUT THE BUDGET OURSELF,” WELL THEN HERE IS YOUR CHANCE!!!! SUBMIT THESE CUTS!!!!

Thank you for this opportunity to share my ideas with you.

Sincerely,

Everette Hatcher, everettehatcher@gmail.com  www.thedailyhatch.org, 13900 Cottontail Lane, Alexander, AR 72002, ph 501-920-5733
