Christian Rock Pioneer Larry Norman’s Songs Part 11

Christian Rock Pioneer Larry Norman’s Songs Part 11

I posted a lot in the past about my favorite Christian musicians such as Keith Green (I enjoyed reading Green’s monthly publications too), and 2nd Chapter of Acts and others. Today I wanted to talk about one of Larry Norman’s songs. David Rogers introduced me to Larry Norman’s music in the 1970’s and his album IN ANOTHER LAND came out in 1976 and sold an enormous amount of copies for a Christian record back then.

1. Only Visiting This Planet – Larry Norman

ONLY VISITING THIS PLANET

Larry Norman

Prophet…scoundrel…poet…thief…comedian…clown…rock star…fallen star…

A living, breathing contradiction in terms, Larry Norman passed away on February 24th, 2008 at the age of 60. I attended the funeral, arriving late and “listening” to it from outside the doors of a Church near Salem, Or.

*          *          *          *

UFO, The Sun Began to Rain, Six Sixty Six, One Way and Hymn to the Last generation would continue Norman’s popular “Second Coming” theme complete with Beast, Antichrist and Rapture. The reworked “Why Don’t You Look Into Jesus” edits out the references to sex and sexually transmitted diseases the original included in 1972. “Righteous Rocker #3″ is a very short (chorus only) a capella reworking of the song from “Only Visiting This Planet.” I heard once that a second version was supposedly removed from “So Long Ago the Garden.”

Larry Norman – 1983 – UFO

Six Sixty-Six – Larry Norman

“Shot Down” would prove to be his defense against detractor who believed he had forsaken the Gospel message on the previous album.

I’ve been shot down, talked about
Some people scandalize my name,
But here I am, talkin’ ’bout Jesus just the same.

I’ve been knocked down, kicked around
But like a moth drawn to the flame,
Here I am, talkin’ ’bout Jesus just the same.

I’ve been rebuked for the things I’ve said,
For the songs I’ve written and the life I’ve led.
They say they don’t understand me, well I’m not surprised,
Because you can’t see nothing when you close your eyes.

The album does credit Dudley on piano and John Michael Talbot on Banjo. But I wanted to note here that much of Norman and even Stonehill’s early work was greatly enhanced by guitarist Jon Linn. His work is much unheralded and he deserved much more respect. I know little about Jon but did read that he had passed away in the late 80’s or early 90’s.

One last song point out is “Song For a Small Circle of Friends.” The song is a list of artists the Norman counted as acquaintances and friends. It served as an evangelical call to these musicians.

With Clapton on guitar, and Charlie on the drums.
McCartney on the Hoffner bass with blisters on his thumbs.

Dear Bobby watch your fears all hide
And disappear while love inside starts growing,
You’re older but less colder
Than the jokes and folks you spent your childhood snowing.

And someone died for all your friends
But even better yet, he lives again.
And if this song does not make sense to you,
I hope His spirit slips on through, He loves you.

One stinging verse in hindsight is in regards to then good friend Randy Stonehill.

And love to you sir Stonehill,
Armed with your axe full gallop on your amp.
You’re crazy and you know it,
But I love you as we both crawl toward the lamp

Open letter to President Obama (Part 653) Gosnell: The Silence is Deafening

Open letter to President Obama (Part 653)

(Emailed to White House on 6-5-13.)

President Obama c/o The White House 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW Washington, DC 20500

Dear Mr. President,

I know that you receive 20,000 letters a day and that you actually read 10 of them every day. I really do respect you for trying to get a pulse on what is going on out here. I know that you don’t agree with my pro-life views but I wanted to challenge you as a fellow Christian to re-examine your pro-choice view.

___________________

Many in the world today are taking a long look at the abortion industry because of the May 14, 2013 guilty verdict and life term penalty handed down by a jury (which included 9 out of 12 pro-choice jurors)  to Dr. Kermit Gosnell. During this time of reflection I wanted to put forth some of the pro-life’s best arguments.

In the film series “WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE HUMAN RACE?” the arguments are presented  against abortion (Episode 1),  infanticide (Episode 2),   euthanasia (Episode 3), and then there is a discussion of the Christian versus Humanist worldview concerning the issue of “the basis for human dignity” in Episode 4 and then in the last episode a close look at the truth claims of the Bible.

I truly believe that many of the problems we have today in the USA are due to the advancement of humanism in the last few decades in our society. Ronald Reagan appointed the evangelical Dr. C. Everett Koop to the position of Surgeon General in his administration. He partnered with Dr. Francis Schaeffer in making the video below. It is very valuable information for Christians to have.  Actually I have included a video below that includes comments from him on this subject.

________________

It’s now been seven days since the Philadelphia Inquirer broke the story of the grand jury report on abortion doctor Kermit Gosnell. So far, neither the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice, nor its member organizations including the Episcopal Church, Presbyterian Church (USA), United Church of Christ, United Methodist General Board of Church and Society and Women’s Division, and various mainline church caucuses, have had a single word to say about Gosnell.

Keep in mind that this was a major news story that involved the killing of at least seven babies (and very possibly hundreds more) as well as at least one woman. Gosnell hasn’t been charged with medical malpractice, or with having a dirty office, but with eight counts of murder. In fact, Gosnell may be the biggest mass murderer in American history, though his destruction of his own records would make that hard enough to prove in court that he’s only charged with eight. (A former assistant of his says that she aided in at least one hundred killings of live-born children.) And yet–perhaps because Gosnell didn’t try to kill a politician, didn’t use a gun, and was practicing a profession that the mainline denominations approve of wholeheartedly–there’s not been a peep.

With regard to the RCRC, that’s not surprising. People across the political spectrum (outside of the abortion-worshipping far left) have been seeking to outdo themselves in indicating their disgust at the chamber of horrors Gosnell ran while killing perhaps hundreds of live babies using a procedure very similar to one that RCRC says should be legal. RCRC apparently figures that if it doesn’t say anything, it won’t look like it’s supporting Gosnell’s practices. But while I’m sure RCRC doesn’t approve of his malpractice or breaking the law, the fact is that RCRC supports two of the pillars of Gosnell’s work: abortion at absolutely any stage of pregnancy, and killing viable babies after bringing them partially (if not entirely) out of the mother. Condemning him would thus be seen as the height of hypocrisy, and defending him would be the equivalent of defending Joseph Mengele, so best that they just ignore the whole sorry mess.

From the mainline denominations that are part of RCRC, as well as their various divisions and caucuses, the silence is only slightly less surprising. RCRC at least has the excuse the it has a 100% supportive constituent base in the mainline bureaucracies and pro-abort interest groups. The denominations, on the other hand, while all officially supportive of abortion rights, still have to deal with minorities (in the case of the PCUSA and UMC, substantial minorities at least) who are pro-life and revolted by Gosnell’s handiwork. You’d think that at the very least, they could muster up some measure of condemnation for him and his filthy practice, even as they reaffirm that abortion should be legal, etc.

And yet they don’t. Now, here’s the contrast that comes to mind. After the mass murder in Tucson, the mainline denominations, along with the National Council of Churches, leapt in with a variety of statements. For example, the NCC has had four different items on its home page about Tucson. The Presbyterian News Service has published five (including one from the Religion News Service on [some] Jewish reaction to Sarah Palin’s use of the term “blood libel”), the Episcopal News Service two (including one that tried to link the Tucson murders to the debate over health care reform), and the UM GBCS three in their January 18 newsletter and another one on gun control in their January 25 edition. Most of them were variations on the two themes of greater regulation of guns and gun accessories as well as the need to “tone down” the political rhetoric (something that didn’t concern them when it was George Bush’s assassination or shooting a Florida gubernatorial candidate that was being drooled across the airwaves).

This is despite the fact that there are some concrete steps that can and should be taken, and that are even now being proposed in the Pennsylvania legislature. For instance, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer:

Sen. Patricia Vance (R., Dauphin), who chairs the Public Health and Welfare Committee, is drafting a measure requiring the state Health Department to swiftly respond to any complaints and to conduct more timely inspections of health clinics.

Sen. Jake Corman (R., Centre) vowed to introduce a bill as early as this week to require annual state inspections of abortion clinics. “The most disturbing question which must be answered is, ‘How was this allowed to go on for so long?’ ” he said.

Corman said his proposal would also mandate minimum health and safety standards “for all abortion clinics – the same safety standards which other health care facilities must meet in the state.”

Those seem like eminently reasonable proposals. What’s more, they fit in with the mainliners’ invariable political instinct, which is that when a problem arises, the solution is more and/or better government regulation and oversight. In this case, I happen to agree completely, at least as long as we can’t put abortionists out of business entirely. And yet…nothing.
Instead, through their creature the RCRC, the mainline denominations are pushing Congress to do what 80% of the American people, as well as a similar percentage of members of mainline churches don’t want to see happen, which is for abortion to become the one “right” that all of us have to subsidize the exercise thereof. They are opposing any effort to prevent federal funds from being used in the insurance exchanges set up by Obamacare to pay for abortion. (More on this from Mark Tooley of the Institute for Religion and Democracy.)
One wonders if the victims of Kermit Gosnell, for whom the mainline churches can apparently spare no attention, appreciate their efforts to allow his colleagues to feed from the federal trough.

Christian Rock Pioneer Larry Norman’s Songs Part 10 more on Album “Only Visiting This Planet”

Christian Rock Pioneer Larry Norman’s Songs Part 10 more on Album “Only Visiting This Planet”

*          *          *          *          *

Also included on this album would be the first version of the song that would define both him and the Jesus Movement for all time, “I Wish We’d All Been Ready.” The song would be covered an inordinate number of time, not only by other artists but by Norman himself, appearing on more than just a handful of albums that would follow.

The Jesus Movement had a focal point of its ministry the idea of the soon coming secret Rapture of the Church. Theologians CI Scofield and Louis Sperry Chafer were primary influences as well as the Latter Rain Movement, a Pentecostal movement that emerge after World War ll that taught that the return of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit in Charismatic “gift” experiences would be a sign of the end times. Evangelist and “hippie prophet” Lonnie Frisbee would also play a major in the burgeoning musical genre.

The above coupled with the growing popularity of the unique “Dispensational” position on eschatology, the “Secret Rapture” was a major component of the Jesus Music and his rapture-ready song became the movements anthem. The song would even play a major role in the popular evangelical movie, “A Thief In the Night.”

Normans’ music and appearance would not play well in mainstream Christian circles that still argued that drums were inherently evil and the use of modern musical styles violated God’s ordinance. there is no doubt there was also a racial component to this issue as well. Norman’s music was heavily influenced not only by modern folk and rock of the time, but by Black Gospel music as well.

It would be the last nationally distributed album for Norman until the release of “Only Visiting This Planet” in 1972. In the years in between he would record and release two independent projects called “Street Level” and “Bootleg.” Both would feature grainy, underground looking black and white artwork. Both would also be “double albums” mixing live concert recording, studio demos of previously unreleased songs and future classics.

These albums would also reveal the smart and piercing humor Norman would always be noted for. Norman concerts were part rock and roll show, part revival meeting and part stand up comedy. This facet of his life and ministry would be introduced on these two albums. One section from “Bootleg” in particular really shines as he addressed the National Youth Workers of America Conference introducing “Sweet Sweet Song of Salvation.”

Larry Norman- Sweet Sweet Song of Salvation

Several songs from the two “independent” releases would find their way on to what is known as the “The Trilogy.” The Trilogy of albums include Only Visiting This Planet, So Long Ago the Garden and In Another Land. Though recognized as a trilogy of records Norman only stated that they were informally created to deal with the present, past and future (respectively) with each album focusing on one of those topics.

Norman had left Capitol after “Upon This Rock” and singed with MGM to release “Only Visiting This Planet” as well as the following album, 1973’s “So Long Ago the Garden.” On both albums he received production help from George Martin, the famed producer of the The Beatles.  Norman stated that he had previously met Paul McCartney and that Paul had tracked him down to talk about his music. This is interesting as we will discuss when we talk about “Only Visiting This Planet.”

The album was decidedly more “secular” in content than any of Norman’s other releases. But much of the controversy in Christian circles came from the original cover (pictured above) because many argued the picture of the lion in the field superimposed onto Norman’s body was an attempt to cover the fact that Norman is naked in the cover as his navel is clearly visible. The later cover (below) would be cropped at a much higher point.

But it is true that the content was not as blatantly spiritual as other Norman releases. This may have caused him to not perform those songs as often in concert, which in turn may have impacted the general longevity of many of the songs. Mus9ically the album was very “current” for the time and flawlessly produced. Martin brought in the same “mellotron” keyboard used on the Beatles, “Strawberry Fields Forever” to use on the song, “Lonely By Myself.” There is a story that while recording the album in one studio Paul McCartney was in the adjoining studio recording “Live and Let Die.”

The album combined Norman’s penchant for 60’s blues, 50’s pop vocals and current social commentary to create a true classic worthy of more attention than it ever really received. Highlights include Fly, Fly, Fly, Be Careful What You Sing, Baroquen Spirits, Nightmare #71 and the haunting beautiful, “She’s a Dancer.” One interesting note is the “cover” of “Christmastime.” The song originally appeared on Randy Stonehill’s “Born Twice” album and is credited as being written by Stonehill. On this album the songwriting credit is given to Norman.

In response to many critics that he had “sold out” his Gospel message on the previous album, Norman followed up with “In Another Land.” It would take nearly three years to record and release this album that ranks a VERY close second in the list of great Larry Norman albums. This album would be released on Norman’s Solid Rock label and receive distribution by Word records in 1975.

“In Another Land” would mark the first nationally distributed “Christian” album for Norman and would also mark the on again, off again love/hate relationship Norman would have with the Christian music industry and, in turn, the industry would have with him. Consider that despite his in arguable multiple contributions to the industry he was not inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame until 2001.

The album was not free of controversy despite its very evangelical content. The first and most obvious issue was the unseemly longhair he sported, which in 1975 was simply unacceptable at the time. The cover also received complaints because Norman’s thumbs are supposedly switched with the right thumb on the left hand and vice versa, and that, it is claimed, is some sort of Satanic imagery.

SERIOUSLY!

“In Another Land” would contain many of Norman’s classics that would remain favorites for all time. The production is stellar and the use of limited spacing between songs keeps the record moving in non-stop fashion. Highlights would literally include the entire album! But I will note some interesting points.

The cover of Stonehill’s “I Love You” in a little odd since the only line from Stonehill’s original from “Born Twice” is the first line of the song. “The Rock That Doesn’t Roll” continues the theme of “Why Should the Devil Have All the Good Music” and would inspire countless musical defenses of Christian Rock. But rather than being a song about Christian Rock it is simply a play on words to describe Jesus. It is also the song that contains the lyric the album titles is based on.

“MAGIC IN THE MOONLIGHT”– 4 STARS

Say what you will about how the man carries himself inside and outside of the film industry, but four-time Oscar-winning writer and director Woody Allen is nothing short of an “actor’s dream” as a filmmaker. Time after time, he assembles stellar ensembles of eclectic talent from all levels of Hollywood’s tiers and alphabetical lists. Just last summer in “Blue Jasmine,” you had stand-up comedian fossil Andrew Dice Clay sharing the screen and shaming two-time Academy Award winner Cate Blanchett. There are dozen of examples like that throughout his cinematic history. People flock to work with him and his “who’s who” filmography can trump any “Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon” game to represent a river basin of tributaries connecting limitless acting talent.

Even further, Allen’s broad project choices and his award-winning screenwriting (most Oscar nominations in screenwriting than anyone is history) challenge actors and actresses to leap out of their comfort zones and raise their game. If my math is correct, his films have netted 17 Oscar nominations for acting and 7 wins, including Blanchett this year. Woody Allen has the Midas touch of artistic credibility. Non-actors become notable presences. No-name actors become discovered somebodies. Name actors look better than they normally do and great actors get even greater, even when the films aren’t that great.

In his latest film, “Magic in the Moonlight,” Allen bestows that touch on one great actor and one name actress with Colin Firth and Emma Stone as his leads. Firth, who can easily get by as a man of few words, gets a richly vibrant leading man role full of words and well-guided bluster while Stone gets to showcase a rarely scene subtlety to balance her looks and charisma. Both are quintessential Woody Allen-style roles.

Firth plays Stanley, a legendary English stage magician of the 1920’s who dons oriental makeup to become the powerful mute character of Wei Ling Soo. Unmatched in popularity, he’s the best in the business and tours the world over captivating audiences. Outside of his character, Stanley is a rude, pompous, self-absorbed, and self-anointed prick, genius, and pessimist. He believes in all things rational and finds people that believe in faith, spirituality, and other forms of whimsy to be as gullible as those who fall for the magic tricks in his act.

Fellow magician and friend Howard Burken (theater veteran Simon McBurney) offers Stanley a proposition that piques his interest after attending a show in Berlin. Howard has come upon an American girl named Sophie Baker (Stone) that is posing to be a spiritual medium and psychic that can talk to the deceased. She and her handler mother (“Pollock” Oscar winner Marcia Gay Harden) are getting rich families in the French Riviera to believe Sophie’s gifts and pay for her services. Worst of all, Sophie even has Howard believing in her supposed powers.

Howard knows that Stanley is a true student of the misdirection game and has, time and again for him, exposed countless frauds that sully the idea of magic with teases of spiritual connection and talent. Since he cannot debunk Sophie, he convinces Stanley to come to Cote d’Azor where she is residing with a rich widow (Jacki Weaver of “Silver Linings Playbook”) and wooing her son (Hamish Linklater of “42” and “Battleship”). Upon arriving and seeing Sophie for himself, even the over-confident Stanley can’t seem to see how she’s pulling off her rouse.

As a romantic comedy, “Magic in the Moonlight” might come off as easy and predictable on paper at first, but the movie puts the “is-she-or-isn’t-she” game of Sophie at the forefront as an equal means of cinematic redirection parallel to what’s happening in the film itself. The movie casts a fun spell over us the way it does to Stanley as well. With dialogue dashing back and forth from sprite and coy to acidic and comedic, the clash between the spiritual and logical lead characters makes for excellent banter and breezy chemistry.

As aforementioned, Firth is his usual great self and then some while Stone successfully keeps up with a seasoned veteran like “The King’s Speech” Oscar winner. She more than wins a few scenes from Firth, but he’s still our eccentric center focus for “Magic in the Moonlight.” Allen gave each of them room to work and they succeed, despite their age difference. As with so many Woody Allen films, this became an entertaining actor’s showcase.

Beyond the performances, there’s certainly a worthy twist or two to the spell Allen is casting to heighten the entertainment value. Gorgeous costume work from designer Sonia Grande (“Midnight in Paris”) and period-perfect jazz and swing music add to the decadent allure. Topping it all off, the stunning French Riviera locales will also win you over in a hurry. This is one pretty and intoxicating film. In my opinion, “Magic in the Moonlight” is the best Woody Allen film since 2011’s“Midnight in Paris” after last summer’s disappointing “Blue Jasmine” and the wayward “To Rome With Love” the year before that in 2012. Fans of “Midnight in Paris” will gladly reacquire their Woody Allen fix from “Magic in the Moonlight.”

LESSON #1: THE CLASH WHEN LOGIC AND RATIONALITY MEET THE SPIRITUAL AND METAPHYSICAL— Part of “Magic in the Moonlight” opens the floor, albeit a dated one of 1920’s sensibilities, to the debate between science and faith. We have a mix of characters that having their convictions challenged toward their usual way of thinking, whether it’s the belief in something more beyond this world and the side that sticks to the facts of what you see is what you get. It’s a heady and intriguing competition built into this film.

LESSON #2: WHEN THE SOUL OF ONE’S HEART COUNTERS THE LOGIC OF ONE’S BRAIN— Within the ongoing debate discussed in Lesson #1 comes the moments where stalwart and fundamental opinions within people get changed, corrected, or justified. More often than not, thanks to Sophie’s convincing abilities, the heart is winning over the brain. People, and Stanley in particular, begin to forget the facts and go on the emotions stirring within them.

LESSON #3: LOVE IS NOT RATIONAL— Hammering home the winning streak of the heart from Lesson #2, love, the biggest emotional experience and investment we make in our lives, cannot be fully explained by rational logic. One can try and scientifically talk about pheromones, hormones, and carnal attraction, but love stirs from different parts of the brain and body. Love, in all of its components and details, cannot be defined or equated on paper. No two types of love are the same and variables of randomness are everywhere.

Christian Rock Pioneer Larry Norman’s Songs Part 9 more on Album “Only Visiting This Planet”

ONLY VISITING THIS PLANET

Larry Norman

Prophet…scoundrel…poet…thief…comedian…clown…rock star…fallen star…

A living, breathing contradiction in terms, Larry Norman passed away on February 24th, 2008 at the age of 60. I attended the funeral, arriving late and “listening” to it from outside the doors of a Church near Salem, Or.

*          *          *          *          *

Pastor Steve Wilkins spoke of the great Scottish warrior William Wallace several years ago at a conference. In his introductory remarks he noted that we actually know very little historical “facts” about Wallace and that most of what we believe about Wallace comes from an epic poem by an English Minstrel named Blind Harry a century or two after the death of Wallace.

Blind Harry’s poem stretches, twists and turn the truth on many occasions as it was compiled through oral traditions in which “legends” entered and merged, mixed and meshed with historical fact to create the larger than life character portrayed in the movie, Braveheart. And now even centuries later dissecting the truth from the legend and lore has proven to be nearly impossible.

But Wilkins argues that there is no real harm in the fabricated additions to the lore and legacy of Wallace, and in fact they play a very important role in actual history. Wilkins explains that it was the “legend” of Wallace that inspired many Scottish Christians to seek a new land in the Americas and eventually take up arms for the same freedoms they believed and perceived Wallace had fought for many centuries previous. It was not the actual truth that inspired them and carried them through difficult times and decisions, but the “legend” built upon the truth.

Larry Norman was born in Corpus Christi, TX but spent most of his formative years in Northern California near or in the Bay Area of San Fransisco. He was introduced to God and the Church early in his life at a Black Pentecostal Church in the neighborhood he grew up in.

In his late teens he joined a band called People! out of the Bay Area that took their name on as a response to the common use of animals or insects for rock band names like The Animals, The Beatles and The Byrds. A psychedelic, blues band People! only scored one hit with the song, a cover of the Zombies (which was OK I guess because they used to be people) hit song, “I Love You” that did crack the Top 20.

The album also contained the song “What We Need Is a Lot More of Jesus, and A Lot Less Rock and Roll,” which in reality comes off as a parody of mainstream evangelical Church life and thought. There was really nothing very “Christian” about the song despite its title. This is a bit odd as Norman would later claim that the album was supposed to be named after that song and that the supposed original artwork was changed to just a photo of the band and the title changed to simple. “I Love You.” Other band members would dispute this claim.

This would begin a long list of revisionist history claims by others regarding Norman’s version of things.

People! would record one more album for Capitol Records but Norman will have left previous to its release and end up only appearing one song. Along with the above claim of censorship by Capitol Records, Norman claimed that band members were being forced to embrace Scientology or forced to leave. This too is denied by band members.

The band would reunite 5 years later for a benefit concert at UCLA that would later be released under the name, “The Israel Tapes.”

Larry would record his first solo album, Upon This Rock, in 1969 for Capitol Records, the same label he claimed censored his work with People! This album is a very “Christian” album in all respects and would kick off a solo career that would last until his death in 2008. It is as the result of this album that Norman is credited with being the father of Christian Rock.

Christian Rock was born!

Upon This Rock is considered one of Norman’s finest works combining both blatantly Christian and evangelical messages as well as social and political commentary. This would remain a constant for Norman, who was the first Christian artists to make very progressive commentary on many issues that would conflict with mainstream Christianity.

The album would contain many Norman classics that would endure for decades including You Can’t Take Away the Lord, Moses in the Wilderness, Nothing Really Changes and Sweet Sweet Song of Salvation (which would become a youth group and Young Life favorite).Norman was influenced by Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones and Black Gospel Music and it shows here and on every album that would follow.

Open letter to President Obama (Part 652)

(Emailed to White House on 6-25-13.)

President Obama c/o The White House 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW Washington, DC 20500

Dear Mr. President,

I know that you receive 20,000 letters a day and that you actually read 10 of them every day. I really do respect you for trying to get a pulse on what is going on out here.

The federal government debt is growing so much that it is endangering us because if things keep going like they are now we will not have any money left for the national defense because we are so far in debt as a nation. We have been spending so much on our welfare state through food stamps and other programs that I am worrying that many of our citizens are becoming more dependent on government and in many cases they are losing their incentive to work hard because of the welfare trap the government has put in place. Other nations in Europe have gone down this road and we see what mess this has gotten them in. People really are losing their faith in big government and they want more liberty back. It seems to me we have to get back to the founding  principles that made our country great.  We also need to realize that a big government will encourage waste and corruption. The recent scandals in our government have proved my point. In fact, the jokes you made at Ohio State about possibly auditing them are not so funny now that reality shows how the IRS was acting more like a monster out of control. Also raising taxes on the job creators is a very bad idea too. The Laffer Curve clearly demonstrates that when the tax rates are raised many individuals will move their investments to places where they will not get taxed as much.

American Family Radio reported that Fox News said:

The Army psychiatrist accused of killing 13 people and wounding 32 others during a shooting at Fort Hood has reportedly been paid more than $278,000 since the 2009 incident.

U.S. Department of Defense officials confirmed to NBCDFW.com that Maj. Nidal Hasan’s salary cannot be suspended unless he is proven guilty in the Nov. 5, 2009, shooting in Texas, citing the Uniform Code of Military Justice. Jury selection in his trial is scheduled to begin May 30.

If Hasan, 42, had been a civilian Defense Department employee, Army officials could have suspended his pay after just seven days, NBCDFW.com reports.

A military judge refused to delay Hasan’s trial earlier this month after his attorneys sought to postpone the court-martial to Sept. 1. Hasan’s attorneys claimed military jurors may be influenced by national media coverage of the Boston Marathon bombings that compared the two Muslim suspects — Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev – to Hasan.

Prosecutors countered that the delay was unnecessary because Hasan was mentioned only briefly in some news reports about the April 15 attacks in Boston.
Hasan faces the death penalty or life in prison without parole if convicted of 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 counts of attempted premeditated murder.

The White House and Pentagon have refused to characterize Hasan’s attack as terrorism, instead terming it “workplace violence.” The victims have been denied Purple Hearts and are suing the military because they claim the “workplace violence” designation gives them diminished access to medical care and financial benefits normally available to those whose wounds are designated as “combat related.

Only Visiting This Planet is an album recorded by Larry Norman in 1972. The album was selected as the second album in CCM Magazine‘s The 100 Greatest Albums in Christian Music.[2] In April 2014 the album was announced as one of 25 sound recordings inducted for 2013 into the Library of Congress National Recording Registry, that preserves as “cultural, artistic and/or historical treasures, representing the richness and diversity of the American soundscape”,[3] making it the first Christian rock album chosen for the registry.[4]

History

On 8 September 1972 Norman began recording his second studio album,[5] Only Visiting This Planet,[6] the first album in a projected trilogy,[7][8] in AIR Studios in London.[9] Only Visiting This Planet, often ranked as Norman’s best album,[10] “mixed his Christian message with strong political themes”, and “was meant to reach the flower children disillusioned by the government and the church” with its “abrasive, urban reality of the gospel”.[10] In a 1980 interview, Norman explained its purpose:

Only Visiting This Planet is the first part of the trilogy, and represents the present. On the front cover, I find myself standing in the middle of New York City, with buildings and traffic pressed around me and my hand on my head kind of saying, What is going on in this life? Is this really earth?, and the back cover is me visiting the site of a previous civilisation with its own monoliths, not skyscrapers, but amazing, architecturally sound structures just the same. The Druids apparently constructed Stonehenge to help them observe or worship the sun, and their civilisation is now as dead as will someday be New York. And I’m just standing there, looking around, wondering what happened to kill off this culture and reduce its entire recorded history to a few standing structures.[11]

On 6 January 1973 Norman was one of three named as Best New Male Artist of the year by Cashbox.[12] By February 1973 songs from Only Visiting This Planet had been recommended by Billboard for “heavy Top 40 airplay”,[13] and were being played on WVVS-FM, KSHE-FM, and WKTK-FM.[14] In 1990 CCM magazine voted Only Visiting This Planet as “the greatest Christian album ever recorded”.[15] Only Visiting This Planet was one of 25 sound recordings inducted for 2013 into the Library of Congress National Recording Registry, that preserves as “cultural, artistic and/or historical treasures, representing the richness and diversity of the American soundscape.”[16] A statement by the Library of Congress called the album “the key work in the early history of Christian rock,” describing Norman as one who “commented on the world as he saw it from his position as a passionate, idiosyncratic outsider to mainstream churches.”[17]

After a tour of South Africa in June and the UK in July,[18] and the release in July of his “Why Should the Devil Have All the Good Music?”, a songbook featuring some of Norman’s songs from both Upon This Rock and Only Visiting This Planet.[19]

In the song “Reader’s Digest” Norman sings the following verse: “Dear John, who’s more popular now? I´ve been listening to some of Paul’s new records. Sometimes I think he really is dead.” (see Paul is dead) “Who’s more popular now?” makes reference to John Lennon’s famous claim that the Beatles were more popular than Jesus. The album features King Crimson prog-rock bassist and Asia frontman, John Wetton on bass guitar.

A three-LP boxed set containing the entire trilogy in their originally intended forms and titled The Compleat Trilogy (as mentioned on the insert of the Street Level reissue of Only Visiting This Planet) has never been released.

Episode VII – The Age of Non Reason

Dr. Schaeffer’s sweeping epic on the rise and decline of Western thought and Culture

_______________________

I love the works of Francis Schaeffer and I have been on the internet reading several blogs that talk about Schaeffer’s work and the work below was really helpful. Schaeffer’s film series “How should we then live?  Wikipedia notes, “According to Schaeffer, How Should We Then Live traces Western history from Ancient Rome until the time of writing (1976) along three lines: the philosophic, scientific, and religious.[3] He also makes extensive references to art and architecture as a means of showing how these movements reflected changing patterns of thought through time. Schaeffer’s central premise is: when we base society on the Bible, on the infinite-personal God who is there and has spoken,[4] this provides an absolute by which we can conduct our lives and by which we can judge society.  Here are some posts I have done on this series: Francis Schaeffer’s “How should we then live?” Video and outline of episode 10 “Final Choices” , episode 9 “The Age of Personal Peace and Affluence”, episode 8 “The Age of Fragmentation”, episode 7 “The Age of Non-Reason” , episode 6 “The Scientific Age” ,  episode 5 “The Revolutionary Age” , episode 4 “The Reformation”,  episode 3 “The Renaissance”, episode 2 “The Middle Ages,”, and  episode 1 “The Roman Age,” .

APOLOGETICS, THEN AND NOW

I read an interesting passage in Arnobius (church father, ca. 300 AD) today.  Why, he is asking the Heathen, do they bear such hatred for Christ that they feel a necessity to harry, torture, and kill his People?  What injury did Christ ever do to them?  “Did He ever, in claiming for himself power as a king, fill the whole world with bands of the fiercest soldiers, and of nations at peace, did He destroy and put an end to some and compel others to submit to His yoke and serve Him?  Did He ever, excited by grasping avarice, claim as His own by right all that wealth to have abundance of which men strive eagerly?  Did He ever, transported with lustful passions, break down by force the barriers of purity, or stealthily lie in wait for other men’s wives?”

Well, there is a sobering passage!  For no Christian apologist would dare to write it today for fear that the response would be, “Yes, that is exactly what He has done—in His name-bearers and representatives–and we hold Him accountable for their actions, by God!!!”  The early church had its problems, some serious ones; but by 300-ish AD it had not yet become publicly notorious for things like the crusades, the religious wars of the 17th century, or (to hasten forward to our own time) the Health and Wealth Gospel by which Televangelists get rich at the expense of their gullible followers, or the Roman Catholic priestly sexual abuse scandal.  Can we even imagine a day when a Christian apologist could afford to advance an argument like this with any confidence?  Now, there’s some nose-rubbing in reality for you!  It does indeed help to explain why we face such an uphill battle today.

What lesson can we take away from this?  Speaking the truth in love is not optional; but we already knew that.  Well, the “love” part has to be over-emphasized now (if that is possible) because we do not start from a neutral position.  We start with a world already angry for what it sees as the sins of Christians.  We start with a world that has been told by the “New Atheists” that those sins are not an aberration, but flow from the very nature of Christian faith. We start with a world prone to believe such lies.

We have to overcome such perceptions before we even have a chance of being heard.  We have to take more seriously than ever before Francis Schaeffer’s emphasis on True Spirituality and The Mark of The Christian (two books it would be well to read again–or for the first time).  We have to remember that what he called “the final apologetic”–demonstrable love for each other and for those we are sent to reach–is not final in the sense that it comes at the end, but rather in the sense that it is the ultimate piece, without which anything else we do will do more harm than good.  I don’t think we remain silent until all that is perfectly in place, for then we would never speak at all.  But the “final apologetic” must become the unmistakable context for everything we do and say.  We should have been doing this all along, because Scripture commands it.  But our failure today will have even worse consequences than it did before.

Maybe, if we are faithful, our grandchildren may be able to use Arnobius’ argument once again.  No, I don’t have that much faith.  But we should be faithful anyway, because it’s the right thing to do.

Open letter to President Obama (Part 651) Five Thoughts on the Gosnell Conviction

Open letter to President Obama (Part 651)

(Emailed to White House on 6-4-13.)

Five Thoughts on the Gosnell Conviction

Here are five brief thoughts on the conviction and sentencing of Dr. Kermit Gosnell, the Philadelphia abortion provider. Recently, Dr. Gosnell was sentenced to life in prison for performing “abortions” on multiple children born after 24-weeks, including children born alive.1. Gosnell exposed the true horrors of abortion.
This case exposed to a wide audience the horrible practices of abortion. Dr. Gosnell committed these crimes by an unspeakable practice he called “snipping,” i.e. the cutting of children’s spinal cords with scissors. That this practice (or a similar technique) could ever be performed on any infant–much less those born alive–is beyond comprehension. This trial brought the bloody mess that is the practice of abortion to our collective conscience, and forced us to reckon with its sheer monstrosity.  2. The power of conservative social media.
Although the mainstream news media was slow to cover this trial, Gosnell eventually began to receive the coverage it deserved to have from the start. Whether it was shunned because of the terrors of the details of the trial, or because the liberal-leaning media knew that it was damaging to an “abortion on demand” ideology, we may never know. What we do know is that it was conservative bloggers, including users of micro-blogs like Twitter with its #Gosnell campaign, who brought this case to the attention of the world. In case you were wondering, FOX News and CNN covered the sentencing of Dr. Gosnell on live TV. When I flipped over to MSNBC, they were eagerly promoting a new movie about Wikileaks: disgusting.3. Our existing laws are in serious need of revision.
Roe vs. Wade made the rubric of dividing pregnancy into trimesters the universal language of our medical system. Unfortunately, most states’ abortion laws are governed by medical science and knowledge that is decades old. Today, premature children are able to live outside the womb weeks–or even months–earlier than they were in the 1970’s. A child that was considered “viable” then, may be viable much earlier today.

Although I consider life to begin at the moment of conception, (as do most serious Bible-believing Christians), even those who do not share our conviction must now reckon with the fact that a baby is clearly alive–by any medical, philosophical, or theological standard–long before 39-weeks.

That this is the case cannot seriously be disputed by any rational thinker. Today’s 3D ultrasound technology is a major player in convincing our society of the true miracle of life in the womb.

4. These horrible acts are likely to be much more widespread than we are ready to admit.
Already–just a week later–there are allegations of another case in Texas that may be even worse than the Gosnell case. The practice of “snipping” live-born children was apparently not restricted to an obscure location in inner-city Philly, as many would have us believe. The reports of one Dr. Douglas Karpen are rumored to be more despicable than Gosnell, if that is even possible. This case, if reports by observers and witnesses are to be believed, also includes the decapitation of infant children.

5. The failure of federal and state governments to regulate the entire industry of abortion providers is a disgrace.
Gosnell got away with his murderous rampage for years, decades even. No regulator would touch his so called “medical” practice. Sadly, he was never brought down by the incidents and reports related to infanticide; it was drug charges that eventually brought investigators looking. Our societal reluctance to regulate abortion providers because it seems to violate a “right” to abortion-on-demand is heinous indeed.

Christian Rock Pioneer Larry Norman’s Songs Part 7 “I Wish We’d All Been Ready”

Christian Rock Pioneer Larry Norman’s Songs Part 7 “I Wish We’d All Been Ready”

I posted a lot in the past about my favorite Christian musicians such as Keith Green (I enjoyed reading Green’s monthly publications too), and 2nd Chapter of Acts and others. Today I wanted to talk about one of Larry Norman’s songs. David Rogers introduced me to Larry Norman’s music in the 1970’s and his album IN ANOTHER LAND came out in 1976 and sold an enormous amount of copies for a Christian record back then.

I Wish We’d All Been Ready

Life was filled with guns and war,

And everyone got trampled on the floor,

I wish we’d all been ready

Children died, the days grew cold,

A piece of bread could buy a bag of gold,

I wish we’d all been ready,

There’s no time to change your mind,

The Son has come and you’ve been left behind.

A man and wife asleep in bed,

She hears a noise and turns her head, he’s gone,

I wish we’d all be ready,

Two men walking up a hill,

One disappears and one’s left standing still,

I wish we’d all been ready,

There’s no time to change your mind,

The Son has come and you’ve been left behind.

Life was filled with guns and war,

And everyone got trampled on the floor,

I wish we’d all been ready,

Children died, the days grew cold,

A piece of bread could buy a bag of gold,

I wish we’d all been ready,

There’s no time to change your mind,

How could you have been so blind,

The Father spoke, the demons dined,

The Son has come and you’ve been left behind.
