You’re the Top

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search

“You’re The Top” is a Cole Porter song from the 1934 musical Anything Goes. It is about a man and a woman who take turns complimenting each other. The best selling version was Paul Whiteman‘s Victor single, which made the top five.

It was the most popular song from Anything Goes at the start with hundreds of parodies.[1][2]

The lyrics are particularly significant because they offer a snapshot as to what was highly prized in the mid-1930s, and demonstrate Porter’s rhyming ability.

Some of the lyrics were re-written by P. G. Wodehouse for the British version of Anything Goes.

People and items referenced in the song

The following is a list of many of the references made in the song:

P. G. Wodehouse anglicised it for the British version of Anything Goes. Amongst other changes, he altered two lines from “You’re an O’Neill drama / You’re Whistler’s mama!” to “You’re Mussolini / You’re Mrs Sweeny“)[3][4]

Versions of the song

The “Washington vs. the Bunny” (season one, episode five) episode of The Dick Van Dyke Show features a version of the song performed for Laura Petrie (Mary Tyler Moore) by her very young son Ritchie. In that version, Ritchie mistakenly alters the lyrics from “You’re the Mona Lisa” to “You’re the Mommy Lisa”.

The song played a major role in the M*A*S*H episode “The Joker Is Wild” whereupon the loser of a “jokeoff” in the 4077th had to sing the song without his bottoms (pants) in the mess hall. Alan Alda‘s character Hawkeye ultimately had to make good on said promise.

Also sung as the introduction by Paul Jones and arranged by Richard Rodney Bennett for the ITV series The Charmer starring Nigel Havers. Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka did a version of the song at the 2011’s gala of The Trevor Project[5]

A personalized version of this song was featured in season seven of Gilmore Girls, sung by Edward Herrmann and Kelly Bishop to their onscreen granddaughter played by Alexis Bledel in honor of her graduation from Yale. It features such lines as: “You’re the top/You’ve graduated. You’re the top/Your grandparents are elated.”

Parodies

Porter biographer William McBrien wrote that at the height of its popularity in 1934 to 1935 it had become a “popular pastime” to create parodies of the lyrics.[2] Porter, who himself had called the song “just a trick” the public would get bored by[2] was flooded with hundreds of parodies with one reportedly written by Irving Berlin.[2] Despite the “ribald” nature of some of the parodies, McBrien believes few, including a “King Kong” parody were written by Porter or Berlin.[6]

Dan Hampton at the Little Rock Touchdown Club Part 2

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nCPWDMKzVs4

Dan Hampton told about the  year with the Chicago Bears when they took on the Vikings and they sacked Archie Manning 11 times.

In October on 1984 the Bears beat the Vikings but in the process Dan Hampton got to play against one of his childhood heroes. He remembered when Archie Manning played for the Ole Miss Rebels against Arkansas in the 1970 Sugar Bowl. Hampton’s father won the office pool for guessing the closest score of that game and he bought a color tv for Hampton’s family. That meant a lot to Dan. Then suddenly in the game Manning ran up the middle and Hampton crushed his helmet and broke his nose. Hampton looked down at Archie and his nose looked like a taco and Hampton thought “I just crushed my childhood idol Archie Manning’s nose and he was responsible for me getting that first color tv!!!” About 15 years later while playing golf in the St Jude Memphis Pro Am Golf Tournament Hampton saw Peyton Manning and they waved at each other. Then after getting in the golf cart and driving down the cart path he saw Peyton there standing with his finger pointing at Hampton and he said, “Hey you are the guy who broke my dad’s nose!!!”

dan-hampton-former-arkansas-razorback-and-the-nfls-chicago-bears-defensive-end-at-the-little-rock-touchdown-club-tuesday

Dan Hampton, former Arkansas Razorback and the NFL’s Chicago Bears defensive end at the Little Rock Touchdown Club Tuesday.

Dan Hampton knows a thing or two when it comes to pressure.

The former Arkansas Razorback played 12 years in the NFL and was a key member of one of the greatest defenses in professional football history, playing defensive tackle for the 1985 Super Bowl champion Chicago Bears.

So Hampton, 55, was pleased to see that the NFL has agreed to pay $765 million to settle lawsuits filed by thousands of former NFL players who developed dementia or other concussion-related brain disorders they say were caused by the violent collisions that fueled the sport’s rise in popularity and profit.

Hampton said Tuesday at the Little Rock Touchdown Club luncheon that the rise in chronic traumatic encephalopathy among former NFL players was impossible to ignore.

“We’ve been seeing this coming for five to 10 years with the CTE, the trauma to the brain,” the former Jacksonville High School football standout said of the class-action settlement, which was announced Thursday. “The NFL knows that there’s an800-pound elephant or gorilla, or whatever you want to call it. There’s something that has to be addressed.

“This is probably a big step by the NFL to acknowledge the fact that they were culpable at some point. How much? We don’t know yet. It still has to be played out. They’re trying to do the right thing, and I applaud them for that.”

Hampton enjoyed success throughout his college and pro football careers. He played four seasons at Arkansas (1975-1978), earning All-America honors in 1978.

The Bears took Hampton fourth overall in the 1979 draft, and he went on to become a six-time All-Pro selection and a four-time Pro Bowl selection during his 12-year career (1979-1990).

The highlight of his career came in 1985, when he was a member of a fierce defensive unit that led the Bears to a 15-1 record and cemented their legacy as one of the greatest defenses of all time by defeating the New England Patriots 46-10 to win Super Bowl XX in New Orleans.

The Bears, who led the league in fewest points allowed (12.4 per game) during the season, set Super Bowl records for sacks (seven),fewest rushing yards allowed (seven) and margin for victory (36 points).

The Bears knew early during the 1985 season they had something special on defense when Chicago went to Irving, Texas, for a preseason game against the Dallas Cowboys. Chicago won the exhibition game, and Hampton left town with a word of warning.

“They better have that cart that carries people off gassed up, because we’re coming back in November,” he said.

Just as promised, the Bears returned to Texas Stadium in November. Former Cowboys defensive back Everson Walls said early in the week that the undefeated Bears hadn’t played anybody leading up to the game. The Bears defeated the Cowboys 44-0.

“Everson Walls was right,” Hampton said following the shutout. “We’re 11-0, and we still ain’t played nobody.”

The Little Rock Touchdown Club announced Tuesday that it has created the Dan Hampton Award, which will be given to the top defensive lineman in the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision. Hampton said he is flattered to have his name associated with such an award.

“It has a certain responsibility to it,” said Hampton, who was inducted in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2002. “You want to be exemplary. I’m like, ‘Wow, this is really amazing.’ ”

Hampton credited coaches Bill Reed at Jacksonville High School, Lou Holtz at Arkansas and Mike Ditka with the Bears for turning him into one of the top defensive linemen to ever play the game.

“All I can think about is how lucky was I to play 12 years in the mecca of football … and play for the greatest football team of all time,” Hampton said. “Everywhere I was, I was associated with people that wanted to be special.”

Petrino wins first game against SEC opponent at Western Kentucky!!

_____________

Bobby Petrino is a very good coach and I know there are those in Arkansas that are throwing stones at him for various reasons but what he did at Arkansas is just unbelievable. This latest story about him pressuring medical personnel to release players early in order to play sounds like the people at the Ark Times Blog just don’t understand how the system works. Coaches can make suggestions but the final decision is with the medical staff and the coaches understand that. It is not like the old days anymore.

This week against Tennessee I expect a very close game and when you look at the talent that Western Kentucky has this year then there is no way the score is going be 60-7 like it was four years ago when Western Kentucky last came to Knoxville. The fact is that Western Kentucky was more impressive last week than Tennessee was. Yesterday I made the prediction that the outcome of this game this week will be in doubt into the fourth quarter. We will just have to wait and see how much magic Petrino has!!!

Bobby Petrino, fired by Arkansas in 2012, wins his first game with Western Kentucky and is 9-0 in season openers. (USATSI) Bobby Petrino, fired by Arkansas in 2012, wins his first game with Western Kentucky and is 9-0 in season openers. (USATSI)

Western Kentucky beats Kentucky in Petrino’s debut

CBSSports.com wire reports

Aug. 31, 2013

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Keshawn Simpson ran for a pair of 3-yard touchdowns and Antonio Andrews added his own 3-yard score as Western Kentucky beat Kentucky 35-26 Saturday night making coach Bobby Petrino a winner in his debut.

The Hilltoppers also beat their in-state rival for a second straight year, though they didn’t need overtime like they did last year in this win over the Southeastern Conference program. They outgained Kentucky 487-419 in total offense and held the ball for 35 minutes.

The loss ruined Kentucky coach Mark Stoops’ debut. Coordinator Neal Brown’s Air Raid offense struggled against a Western Kentucky defense returning seven starters from a bowl team that went 7-6 last season in the Sun Belt Conference.

Brandon Doughty was 27 of 34 for 271 yards and a TD, numbers that would have been better except for at least four drops including a would-be touchdown.

Petrino’s debut was everything Western Kentucky wanted from the coach’s first game. Arkansas fired Petrino in April 2012 for misleading school officials about a motorcycle accident that eventually revealed his mistress was a passenger and employed by the coach. He remains undefeated in season openers, improving to 9-0.

When Petrino has had more than a week to prepare for an opponent, he is nearly unbeatable with a record now 28-8 in such games. The former Louisville coach also now is 5-1 against Kentucky with his lone loss coming while at Arkansas. He’ll have a chance to go 2-0 against the SEC when the Hilltoppers visit Tennessee next.

The Hilltoppers decked the end zones with red banners to help make themselves at home in LP Field, home to the NFL’s Tennessee Titans. They also had plenty of fans also on hand too with a crowd of 47,623.

Western Kentucky took control from the start and scored on three of the first four possessions. Western Kentucky went 75 yards or longer on each of the TD drives with Simpson scoring on a pair of 3-yard runs, the second putting the Hilltoppers up 21-10 in the second quarter.

Andrews also had a 3-yard TD. But the senior running back who ran for 1,728 yards last season also lost two fumbles that Kentucky turned into 10 points to trail only 21-17 at halftime. Leon Allen replaced Allen and ran 10 times for 92 yards and a 14-yard TD early in the fourth quarter for a 35-17 lead.

The Wildcats had to settle for a 22-yard field goal by Joe Mansour off the first fumble recovered by Avery Williamson. Jalen Whitlow ran 50 yards the play after Andrews’ second fumble, and Jonathan George capped the 64-yard drive with a 5-yard TD to pull within 21-17 late in the first half.

Stoops put in Maxwell Smith after Western Kentucky went up 35-17. Smith drove the Wildcats to a 30-yard field goal by Mansour and he connected with Demarco Robinson on a 34-yard TD pass with 1:37 left. But Western Kentucky safety Jonathan Dowling stripped Ryan Timmons of the ball with 6:33 left, and the Wildcats’ last gasp ended when an onside kick attempt went out of bounds.

Petrino made sure the Hilltoppers got to kneel down and run out the last seconds. On fourth-and-2, he took a timeout, then had Doughty throw for a 17-yard completion to clinch the victory.

In this session, William Lane Craig delivers his critique of Richard Dawkins’ objections to arguments for the existence of God, followed by questions and answers from the audience. In this clip, Dr Craig addresses a question about how objective moral values can be demonstrated to a Nihilist, who hold that they are illusory.

Francis Schaeffer – The Biblical Flow of History & Truth (1)

Francis and Edith Schaeffer pictured below:

HOW SHOULD WE THEN LIVE? was both a book and a film series.

______________

_________________

Life without God in the picture is absurdity!!!. That was the view of King Solomon when he wrote the Book of Ecclesiastes 3000 years ago and it is the view of many of the modern philosophers today. Modern man has tried to come up with a lasting meaning for life without God in the picture (life under the sun), but it is not possible. Without the infinite-personal God of the Bible to reveal moral absolutes then man is left to embrace moral relativism. In a time plus chance universe man is reduced to a machine and can not find a place for values such as love. Both of Francis Schaeffer’s film series have tackled these subjects and he shows how this is reflected in the arts.

Here are some posts I have done on the series “HOW SHOULD WE THEN LIVE? : Francis Schaeffer’s “How should we then live?” Video and outline of episode 10 “Final Choices” , episode 9 “The Age of Personal Peace and Affluence”, episode 8 “The Age of Fragmentation”, episode 7 “The Age of Non-Reason” , episode 6 “The Scientific Age” ,  episode 5 “The Revolutionary Age” , episode 4 “The Reformation”,  episode 3 “The Renaissance”, episode 2 “The Middle Ages,”, and  episode 1 “The Roman Age,” .

In the film series “WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE HUMAN RACE?” the arguments are presented  against abortion (Episode 1),  infanticide (Episode 2),   euthenasia (Episode 3), and then there is a discussion of the Christian versus Humanist worldview concerning the issue of “the basis for human dignity” in Episode 4 and then in the last episode a close look at the truth claims of the Bible.

I have discussed many subjects with my liberal friends over at the Ark Times Blog in the past and I have taken them on now on the subject of the absurdity of life without God in the picture. Most of my responses included quotes from William Lane Craig’s book THE ABSURDITY OF LIFE WITHOUT GOD.  Here is the result of one of those encounters from June of 2013:

I have enjoyed discussing this big question about how to find lasting meaning in one’s life without God in the picture and I am betting that Zatharus, Doigotta, Citizen1, Hackett and Elwood who have all interacted with me on this, all firmly believe in evolution and I imagine that you all think their is a feeling of upward mobility somehow through that theory but if it is just an impersonal universe here from the combination of time and chance then there is no lasting meaning to our lives.

William Lane Craig touched on this issue too:

Finally, let’s look at the problem of purpose in life. Unable to live in an impersonal universe in which everything is the product of blind chance, atheists sometimes begin to ascribe personality and motives to the physical processes themselves. It is a bizarre way of speaking and represents a leap from the lower to the upper story. For example, the brilliant Russian physicists Zeldovich and Novikov, in contemplating the properties of the universe, ask, why did “Nature” choose to create this sort of universe instead of another? “Nature” has obviously become a sort of God-substitute, filling the role and function of God. Francis Crick halfway through his book The Origin of the Genetic Code begins to spell nature with a capital N and elsewhere speaks of natural selection as being “clever” and as “thinking” of what it will do. Sir Fred Hoyle, the English astronomer, attributes to the universe itself the qualities of God. For Carl Sagan the “Cosmos,” which he always spelled with a capital letter, obviously fills the role of a God-substitute. Though these men profess not to believe in God, they smuggle in a God-substitute through the back door because they cannot bear to live in a universe in which everything is the chance result of impersonal forces.

Moreover, the only way that most people who deny purpose in life live happily is either by making up some purpose—which amounts to self-delusion as we saw with Sartre—or by not carrying their view to its logical conclusions. Take the problem of death, for example. According to Ernst Bloch, the only way modern man lives in the face of death is by subconsciously borrowing the belief in immortality that his forefathers held to, even though he himself has no basis for this belief, since he does not believe in God. Bloch states that the belief that life ends in nothing is hardly, in his words, “sufficient to keep the head high and to work as if there were no end.” By borrowing the remnants of a belief in immortality, writes Bloch, “modern man does not feel the chasm that unceasingly surrounds him and that will certainly engulf him at last. Through these remnants, he saves his sense of self-identity. Through them the impression arises that man is not perishing, but only that one day the world has the whim no longer to appear to him.” Bloch concludes, “This quite shallow courage feasts on a borrowed credit card. It lives from earlier hopes and the support that they once had provided.”26 Modern man no longer has any right to that support, since he rejects God. But in order to live purposefully, he makes a leap of faith to affirm a reason for living.

Finding ourselves cast into a mindless universe with no apparent purpose or hope of deliverance from thermodynamic extinction, the temptation to invest one’s own petty plans and projects with objective significance and thereby to find some purpose to one’s life is almost irresistible.

Dan Hampton at the Little Rock Touchdown Club Part 1

Dan Hampton at the Little Rock Touchdown Club Part 1

Dan Hampton

I really enjoyed the Little Rock Touchdown Club today when Dan Hampton was our speaker. Hampton said that Jimmy Johnson was a great defensive coordinator for him to learn under when he played for Frank Broyles in 1975. Then when Lou Holtz came in and hired Monte Kiffin, Hampton said the defense even got better. Kiffin did no wrong according to Hampton “except he brought Lane into the world.” That comment got a laugh from the crowd.

Dan Hampton Award unveiled at Touchdown Club

Former Jacksonville, Arkansas and Chicago Bear defensive lineman Dan Hampton was on hand Tuesday at the Little Rock Touchdown Club as announced the creation of an award named for him.

The Dan Hampton Award will go to the top defensive lineman in Division I college football and will be handed out at the club’s annual banquet at the end of the season.

Hampton, who grew up on a farm in Cabot, spoke to the crowd of about 200 at the club’s weekly meeting at the Embassy Suites in west Little Rock.

The 2002 Pro Football Hall of Famer entertained the crowd with several stories of his travails in the NFL, including knocking out former New Orleans Saints quarterback Archie Manning on a sack and beating the Dallas Cowboys 44-0 in 1985.

The former All-Pro and Pro Bowler also told the crowd about his time with the Razorbacks, including being recruited by legendary coach and former Razorback Jimmy Johnson and how a crippling fall out of a tree kept him out of sports until his junior year at Jacksonville High School.

Hampton also called his former coach Lou Holtz a “motivation machine,” and lauded his time playing with a number of “Arkansas kids” that were his teammates.

Hampton, who said he loves returning to central Arkansas but rarely gets to, also urged the crowd to let their children play football, despite reservations they may have in light of the recent settlement between the NFL and its former players over concussion-related brain injuries.

“It’s a great way to learn,” he said.

Read more about this story in tomorrow’s Arkansas Democrat-Gazette.

Debating the Founding Fathers with Ark Times Bloggers Part 1 John Adams “The general principles on which the fathers achieved independence were. . . . the general principles of Christianity.”

Debating the Founding Fathers with Ark Times Bloggers Part 1

I have gone back and forth and back and forth with many liberals on the Arkansas Times Blog on many issues such as abortion, human rights, welfare, poverty, gun control  and issues dealing with popular culture , but the issue of the founding fathers’ views on religion got one of the biggest responses.

It is true that 29 of the signers of the Declaration of Independence had degrees with Bible Colleges or Seminaries and these men we know were God-fearing Protestants. This means they had a biblical view of man with an understanding of our sin nature and this led them to come up with a limited government with many checks and balances. They had a strong belief in the afterlife and in future punishments and rewards. They also encouraged Christianity and were not hostile to religion. However, they did not set up a Christian Theocracy but wanted freedom of religion.

People really are losing their faith in big government and they want more liberty back. It seems to me we have to get back to the founding  principles that made our country great.  We also need to realize that a big government will encourage waste and corruption. The recent scandals in our government have proved my point. In fact, the jokes President Obama made at Ohio State about possibly auditing them are not so funny now that reality shows how the IRS was acting more like a monster out of control.  Here is a clip discussing the founders and what their religious views were.

David Barton: Declaration and Constitution Are Based Entirely On The Bible

Here is some comments from our debate on the Arkansas Times Blog in July of 2013:

Max Brantley has cited an article that claims that John Adams said, “The government of the United States is in no sense founded on the Christian religion.”
This is a quote from the 1797 Treaty of Tripoli. David Barton gives the context of that statement here:
http://www.wallbuilders.com/libissuesartic…

Then Barton shows what some Jewish leaders think about the founding of our country here: https://thedailyhatch.org/2012/08/17/presid…

The Supreme Court has expressed what they think about that over the years:

The blogger using the username “YassariaMinderbinder came back and pointed out that the last quote I used was actually just a third hand account and could not be considered reliable and here is my response::

Here are some others from Jefferson that I liked:

The doctrines of Jesus are simple, and tend all to the happiness of man.63

The practice of morality being necessary for the well being of society, He [God] has taken care to impress its precepts so indelibly on our hearts that they shall not be effaced by the subtleties of our brain. We all agree in the obligation of the moral principles of Jesus and nowhere will they be found delivered in greater purity than in His discourses.64

I am a Christian in the only sense in which He wished anyone to be: sincerely attached to His doctrines in preference to all others.65

I am a real Christian – that is to say, a disciple of the doctrines of Jesus Christ.66

I have spent alot of time talking about Woody Allen films on this blog and looking at his worldview. He has a hopeless, meaningless, nihilistic worldview that believes we are going to turn to dust and there is no afterlife. Even though he has this view he has taken the opportunity to look at the weaknesses of his own secular view. I salute him for doing that. That is why I have returned to his work over and over and presented my own Christian worldview as an alternative.

My interest in Woody Allen is so great that I have a “Woody Wednesday” on my blog www.thedailyhatch.org every week. Also I have done over 30 posts on the historical characters mentioned in his film “Midnight in Paris.” (Salvador Dali, Ernest Hemingway,T.S.Elliot,  Cole Porter,Paul Gauguin,  Luis Bunuel, and Pablo Picasso were just a few of the characters.)

The Wall Street Journal reported a few days ago:

Stockholm would be an interesting choice, being that it’s where your hero Ingmar Bergman is from. Do you think it would be intimidating to make a movie there?

I would like to make a film there. And I wonder if it would be suddenly like I fell victim to the Swedish mystique and I wanted to make a film about the lack of communication between human beings or the absence of God. Or maybe I would just make a funny film.

Some say your view is that life is pointless, and others say you’re a romantic realist who believes in being true to yourself. Which is it?

I think that’s the best you can do, but the true situation is a hopeless one because nothing does last. If we reduce it absurdly for a moment, you know the sun will burn out. You know the universe is falling apart at a fantastically accelerating rate and that at some point there won’t be anything at all. So whether you are Shakespeare or Beethoven or Michelangelo, your stuff’s not going to last. So, given that, even if you were immortal, that time is going to come. Of course, you have to deal with a much more critical problem, which is that you’re not going to last microscopically close to that. So, nothing does last. You do your things. One day some guy wakes up and gets the Times and says, “Hey, Woody Allen died. He keeled over in the shower singing. So, where do you want to have lunch today?”

So, what do you do to distract yourself from these depressing thoughts? Knicks games? Or is that depressing, too?

The Knicks are one kind of distraction. For the two hours you’re at the Garden you’re only focused on that. I follow them. I go. I have been a season-ticket holder for many years. They have not been very exciting. It was a nice little flurry for a while but then [Jeremy Lin] got hurt, so we’ll see what happens next year. I am a big sports fan, baseball and basketball, everything. People will say to me, “Does it really matter if the Knicks beat the Celtics?” And I think to myself, “Well, it’s just as important as human existence.”

Really?

Really. It may not seem so, but if you step back and look they are equivalent. I’ve often thought that there’s a movie in two film directors. One makes these confrontational films that deal with these problems. The other one makes strictly escapist material. Which one is making the bigger contribution? You are living this terrible life. It’s hot. It’s sunny. The summertime is awful. Life is miserable. You duck into the movie house. It’s dark. It’s cold. It’s pleasurable. You watch Fred Astaire dance for an hour and a half. And it’s great. You can go out and face life, based on the refreshment factor. If you see the confrontational film, you have a different experience and it seems more substantive but I am not sure it does as much for you as the refreshment. A couple of laughs, a couple of dance numbers, and you forget all that garbage for an hour and a half. I hope I am not depressing you.

FREE TO CHOOSE “Who protects the consumer?” Video and Transcript Part 1 of 7 Milton Friedman: “Allowing the free market to work is the best thing for consumers”

In 1980 I read the book FREE TO CHOOSE by Milton Friedman and it really enlightened me a tremendous amount.  I suggest checking out these episodes and transcripts of Milton Friedman’s film series FREE TO CHOOSE: “The Failure of Socialism” and “What is wrong with our schools?”  and “Created Equal”  and  From Cradle to Grave, and – Power of the Market.

From the original Free To Choose series Milton asks: “Who Protects the Consumer?”. Many government agencies have been created for this purpose, yet they do so by restricting freedom and stifling beneficial innovation, and eventually become agents for the groups they have been created to regulate.

Allowing the free market to work is the best thing for consumers. Milton Friedman noted, “Over a quarter of a century ago, I bought, second hand, a desk calculator for which I paid $300. One of these little calculators today which I can buy for $10 or so, will do everything that did and more besides. What produced this tremendous improvement in technology? It was self-interest or if your prefer, greed. The greed of producers who wanted it to produce something that they can made a dollar on. The greed of consumers who wanted to buy things as cheaply as they could. Did government play a role in this? Very little. Only by keeping the road clear for human greed and self-interest to promote the welfare of the consumer.”
Volume 7 – Who Protects the Consumer?
Abstract:
Do consumers need protection? Increasingly the public answer to this question has been “yes.” Increasingly, too, the Federal government has been identified as the source of this protection. Milton Friedman disputes the views that (1) consumers are in dire need of governmental protection against the wiles of the business community and that (2) governmental actions tend to make consumers better off. He argues that consumers’ problems more frequently than not can be attributed to failures of government rather than to failures of free markets. The best protection for the consumer, in Dr. Friedman’s view, is the free market. Despite popular mythology, business interests do not have the power to make people purchase something they do not want. Consider, for example, the failure of the highly touted Edsel, a product that was heavily promoted by the best advertising brains at the Ford Motor Company and its advertising agencies. When people have alternatives, they will not accept products they do not want. In a competitive market system, business people’s recognition that consumers have alternatives provides a powerful stimulus to keep product quality high. Fear of losing business to competitors provides a strong protective shield for the consumer. Armed with the protection offered by the free market, the consumer, says Dr. Friedman, really needs very little protection by the government. Indeed, many government attempts to protect consumers have made them worse off than they were beforehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KgVvUz6mUkY

Volume 7 – Who Protects the Consumer?
Transcript:
Friedman: The 1960’s Corvair, condemned by Ralph Nader as unsafe at any speed. Since Nader’s attack it is being increasingly accepted that we need government protection in the marketplace. Today there are agencies all over Washington where bureaucrats decide what’s good for us. Agencies to control the prices we pay, the quality of goods we can buy, the choice of products available. It’s already costing us more than $5 billion a year. Since the attack on the Corvair the government has been spending more and more money in the name of protecting the consumer. This is hardly what the 3rd president of the United States, Thomas Jefferson, whose monument this is, had in mind when he defined a wise and frugal government as, one, which restrains men from injuring each other and leaves them otherwise free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement. Ever since the Corvair affair the U.S. government has been increasingly been muscling in between buyer and seller in the marketplaces of America. By Thomas Jefferson’s standards, what we have today is not a wise and frugal government but a spendthrift and snooping government.
The federal regulations that govern our lives are available in many place. One set is here, in the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. In 1936, the Federal Government established the Federal Register to record all of the regulations, hearings and other materials connected with the agencies in Washington. This is volume 1, number 1. In 1936 it took three volumes like this to record all these matters. In 1937 it took four and then it grew and grew and grew. At first rather slowly and gradually, but even so, year by year it took a bigger and bigger pile to hold all the regulations and hearings for that year. Then around 1970 came a veritable explosion so that one pile is no longer enough to hold the regulations for that year. It takes two and then three piles. Until on one day in 1977, September 28, the Federal Register had no fewer than 1,754 pages and these aren’t exactly what you’d call small pages either.
Many of those regulations come from this building.
Worker: Consumer Protection Safety hotline _ can you hold please?
Friedman: The Consumer Product Safety Commission is one of the newest agencies set up on our behalf. One of its jobs is to give advice to consumers.
Workers: The clue that gave it away….. What has been done about the flammability of children’s garments?
Friedman: But its main function is to produce rules and regulations. Hundreds and hundreds of them. Designed to assure safety of products on the market. It’s hard to escape the invisible hand of the Consumer Product Safety Commission except for food and drugs, ammunition and automobiles that are covered by other agencies. It has power to regulate just about anything you can imagine. Already it costs $41 million a year to test and regulate all these products on our behalf and that’s just the beginning. The Commission employees highly trained technicians to carry out tests like this, checking the brakes on a bike. But the fact is that 80% of bike accidents are caused by human error. These tests may one day lead to safer brakes, but even that isn’t sure. The one thing that is sure is that the regulations that come out of here will make bikes more expensive and will reduce the variety available. Yes, they really are testing how matches strike. And the tests are very precise. The pressure must be exactly one pound, the match exactly at right angles.
No matter how many tests are done, children’s swings are never going to be totally safe. You cannot outlaw accidents. If you try, you end up with ludicrous results. It hardly seems possible but they really do use highly skilled people to devise regulations that will prevent toy guns from making to big of a bang.
The Commission, in effect, is deciding what they think is good for us. They are taking away our freedom to choose.
Consumers don’t have to be hemmed in by rules and regulations. They’re protected by the market itself. They want the best possible products at the lowest price. And the self-interest of the producer leaves him to provide those products in order to keep customers satisfied. After all, if they bring goods of low quality here, your not going to keep coming back to buy. If they bring goods that don’t serve your needs, you’re not going to buy them. And therefore, they search out all over the world, the products that might meet your needs and might appeal to you. And they stand in back of them because if they don’t they’re going to go out of business. You see the difference between the market and the political action, the governmental agencies. Here nobody forces you, your free, you do what you want to. There’s no policemen to take money out of your pocket or to make sure that you do what you’re told to. Over a quarter of a century ago, I bought, second hand, a desk calculator for which I paid $300. Only by keeping the road clear for human greed and self-interest to promote the welfare of the consumer.

Open letter to President Obama (Part 400) At least the Tea Party stood up for the founding fathers’ idea of limited government

(Emailed to White House on 1-3-13.)

President Obama c/o The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW
Washington, DC 20500

Dear Mr. President,

I know that you receive 20,000 letters a day and that you actually read 10 of them every day. I really do respect you for trying to get a pulse on what is going on out here.

You are the President of the United States and it seems to me that you should care more about the young children of our nation. The other day twenty young kids were killed in a school shooting in CT and lots of people were rightly upset. However, our federal government is piling tremendous amounts of debt on our children and grand children every day. How will they ever survive that?

At least the Tea Party stood up for the founding fathers’ idea of limited government. They did not vote for the “fiscal cliff deal” which only cut 15 billion when it raised taxes by 600 billion. They wanted spending cut and I mean real cuts in spending too.

When Governments Cut Spending

Uploaded on Sep 28, 2011

Do governments ever cut spending? According to Dr. Stephen Davies, there are historical examples of government spending cuts in Canada, New Zealand, Sweden, and America. In these cases, despite popular belief, the government spending cuts did not cause economic stagnation. In fact, the spending cuts often accelerated economic growth by freeing up resources for the private sector.

Chuck Asay has produced some great political cartoons, including personal favorites such as the Geithner-Obama tractor, the big-bad-wolf economic climate, and (his all-time best, in my humble opinion) the nothing-left-to-steal warning for statists.

Here’s one that’s quite appropriate for today since the politicians are busy negotiating over how to raise taxes while failing to address the real problem of a federal government that is too big and spending too much.

What makes this cartoon so perceptive is that it shows how many – if not most – Republicans are just as willing and happy as Democrats to exacerbate our fiscal problems.

Asay Kick the Can Cartoon

The only bad news is that the cartoon implies the Tea Party has the ability to stop Obama and the other big spenders from kicking the can down the road.

If only. We’re going to get a tax increase in January and there’s nothing the Tea Party can do to stop that from happening. They can’t force Obama, the Senate, or even the GOP leadership in the House to implement pro-growth spending reforms such as a Swiss-style spending cap.

But at least there are some lawmakers who are fighting to do what’s right. I don’t know if they’ll ever succeed, but at least some folks in Washington understand that something needs to happen to restrain the burden of government spending.

Thank you so much for your time. I know how valuable it is. I also appreciate the fine family that you have and your commitment as a father and a husband.

Sincerely,

Everette Hatcher III, 13900 Cottontail Lane, Alexander, AR 72002, ph 501-920-5733, lowcostsqueegees@yahoo.com
