We miss them both very much and yet rejoice that they are now together with their Lord in paradise!”
Her work will continue to bless generation after generation of Christians who, like her, find shelter (French: l’abri) in the Lord.

The President’s main “accomplishment” has been such a disaster that I wonder whether it’s time to feel sorry for Obama.
And if you looked in the dictionary for a definition of Schadenfreude, you might find a picture of me reading a story exposing more evidence that Obamacare isn’t working.
But to paraphrase Mae West, there’s no such thing as too much of a good thing.
Today, we’re going to look at the opinions of two experts, both of whom expect further bad news for Obamacare.
Here’s some of what Michael Tanner, my Cato colleague, wrote for the New York Post.
…“the State of ObamaCare” is growing ever more troubled. For starters, it’s falling far short of the goal of universal coverage. …just 1.5 million have actually completed the ObamaCare checkout, including payment. Worse, surveys indicate that less than a third of those enrolling were previously uninsured. …Even using the most optimistic reading of these figures, fewer than 11 percent of uninsured Americans have gotten coverage because of the ObamaCare law; most likely, fewer. This is what we’re getting for the $2.7 trillion that ObamaCare will cost over the next 10 years? Plus, we should subtract the roughly 500,000 Americans who, by the White House’s own count, have lost insurance because of ObamaCare.
And Mike expects things will get worse over time.
…that’s just the tip of the iceberg, because those policy-killing rules will hit another part of the market over the course of this year — namely, the “small group” market, where employers now buy health policies that cover about 78 million Americans. Many of those with cancelled plans will ultimately end up with similar, if more expensive, employment-based policies, but some are likely to simply wind up uninsured. …Then there’s the bad news about who is enrolling in ObamaCare plans — or rather, who isn’t: not enough of the young and healthy folks that the program needs to overpay for insurance so as to offset the costs of covering older and sicker people. …Oh, and a Reuters survey finds that new enrollees are also less healthy than ObamaCare’s designers hoped, too. Humana, one of the nation’s largest insurers, reports that so far enrollment in its exchange-based plans has been far “more adverse than previously expected.”
Megan McArdle of Bloomberg is similarly unimpressed with how Obamacare has developed.
Enrollment is below expectations: According to the data we have so far, more than half of the much-touted Medicaid expansion came from people who were already eligible before the health-care law passed, and this weekend, the Wall Street Journal reported that the overwhelming majority of people buying insurance through the exchanges seem to be folks who already had insurance. Coverage is less generous than many people expected, with narrower provider networks and higher deductibles. The promised $2,500 that the average family was told they could save on premiums has predictably failed to materialize. And of course, we now know that if you like your doctor and plan, there is no reason to think you can keep them.
But it’s going to get worse, she writes.
The Barack Obama administration is in emergency mode, pasting over political problems with administrative fixes of dubious legality, just to ensure the law’s bare survival — which is now their incredibly low bar for “success.” Although the fixes may solve the short-term political problems, however, they destabilize the markets, which also need to work to ensure the law’s survival. The president is destroying his own law in order to save it.
The article has lots of detail, but here are a few highlights of the bad things that already have happened.
Obamacare’s exchange facility was conceived as a “three-legged stool”: guaranteed issue, community rating, mandate. …Take one away, and the whole thing is in danger of collapsing. Unfortunately, whenever someone has voiced discontent with the way things are going, the administration has taken a hacksaw to another leg. …some folks who had policies they liked before were being forced to drop them and buy new policies they didn’t like so much. That caused an outcry, followed by an emergency grandfathering rule. Other major emergency fixes include…A one-year delay of the employer mandate…Numerous extensions of enrollment and payment deadlines…Changes in the rules governing the “risk corridor” programs that cover excess losses at insurers.
And here are the bad things that Megan expects will happen in the future.
…the worst is yet to come. Here’s what’s ahead…2014: Small-business policy cancellations…Summer 2014: Insurers get a sizable chunk of money from the government to cover any excess losses. When the costs are published, this is going to be wildly unpopular…Fall 2014: New premiums are announced…2014 and onward: Medicare reimbursement cuts eat into hospital margins…Spring 2015: The Internal Revenue Service starts collecting individual mandate penalties…Spring 2015: The IRS demands that people whose income was higher than they projected pay back their excess subsidies…Spring 2015: Cuts to Medicare Advantage…Fall 2015: This is when expert Bob Laszewski says insurers will begin exiting the market if the exchange policies aren’t profitable…Fall 2017: Companies and unions start learning whether their plans will get hit by the “Cadillac tax,”…January 2018: The temporary risk-adjustment plans, which the administration is relying on to keep insurers in the marketplaces even if their customer pool is older and sicker than projected, run out…Fall 2018: Buyers find out that subsidy growth is capped for next year’s premiums…I expect that the administration is going to issue “temporary” administrative fixes for most of the law’s unpopular bits — just as it has so far. That’s not going to get any easier as midterms and then a presidential election creep closer.
But since I’m a humble policy wonk who simply wants to protect and restore economic liberty, I’m just glad that there’s growing recognition that Obamacare is a turkey that needs to be repealed. No wonder I’m getting more optimistic with each passing day.

The House and Senate are working out differences between their farm bills. The following is a list of major questions to consider if the negotiators do come up with a farm bill (explained in this new report here):
Will Congress continue to play politics with the farm bill by combining food stamps with farm programs? For political reasons, Congress has combined the food stamp and agriculture programs in a massive farm bill for years. The only way for real reform is to separate these programs into two bills. At the least, a new farm bill should stagger the programs’ reauthorization periods, effectively separating them and making later reform more likely.
Will food stamp reform be fiscally responsible or irresponsible? Food stamp spending has been climbing for years, doubling between fiscal year (FY) 2000 and FY 2007 and then doubling again to about $80 billion by FY 2012. The growth is partly due to the recession but also due to bad policy. A farm bill that does not include even the House’s modest reductions would be fiscally irresponsible and would mean that the House rejected much-needed reforms.
Will Congress continue to promote dependency instead of empowering Americans? A work requirement is central to food stamp reform. Able-bodied adults should be required to work, prepare for work, or at least look for work in exchange for receiving food stamps. This promotes self-sufficiency and human dignity.
Will Congress turn a blind eye to food stamp abuses? Problematic loopholes are undermining the food stamp program. “Broad-based categorical eligibility,” for example, allows states to bypass asset tests for applicants. A loophole known as “Heat and Eat” lets states artificially boost the amount of food stamp benefits a household receives.
Will Congress avoid dealing with controversial programs in the future? Most agriculture programs are authorized for five years. But the House bill extends the problematic sugar program and two other new agriculture programs for unspecified amounts of time. With no set reauthorization period, Congress is less likely to deal with these problematic programs in the future.
Will taxpayers get stuck with massive liability while wealthy farmers receive almost unlimited protection? The amount of subsidies provided in the new shallow-loss and target-price programs are contingent on commodity prices. If prices collapse, taxpayers are on the hook, while farmers would enjoy almost unlimited risk protection. These programs should not be added to the farm bill. At a minimum, there needs to be a cost cap so taxpayers are not stuck with massive liability.
Will Congress continue to artificially drive up food prices? While some in Congress want to spend more on food stamps, others are pushing policies that artificially drive up food prices. For example, the federal government restricts the amount of sugar sold in the country and limits imports, thus driving up sugar prices.
Will Congress continue to make President Obama look fiscally responsible when it comes to reforming the costliest farm program, crop insurance? According to the Government Accountability Office, the average annual cost of crop insurance from 2000 to 2006 was $3.1 billion. It more than doubled to $7.6 billion per year from 2007 to 2012 and will increase to a projected $8.9 billion per year from 2013 to 2022. While President Obama is proposing a $12 billion cut to the program, both bills would drive up costs.

We need a Balanced Budget Amendment today so we can limit the amount of money the federal government can spend. Why does the government spend our money so foolishly? Milton Friedman has the answer below.
Who’s spending whose money? That’s the crucial question.
Sometimes the explanation for vexing problems is clear as can be after you see it. A perfect example is an observation made by the late Milton Friedman in a 2004 interview with Fox News:
There are four ways to spend money. You can spend your own money on yourself. When you do that, why you really watch out for what you’re doing, and you try to get the most for your money. Then you can spend your own money on somebody else. For example, I buy a birthday present for someone. Well then, I’m not so careful about the content of the present, but I’m very careful about the cost. Then, I can spend somebody else’s money on myself. And if I spend somebody else’s money on myself, then I’m going to have a good lunch! Finally, I can spend somebody else’s money on somebody else. And if I spend somebody else’s money on somebody else, I’m not concerned about how much it costs, and I’m not concerned about what I get. And that’s government. And that’s close to 40 percent of our national income.
It would be nearly impossible to exaggerate how many of our current economic problems are explained by Friedman’s four ways of spending money. Think of the four ways in the order they’re presented as S1, S2, S3, and S4. As Friedman explains, the effectiveness of how money is spent declines inexorably as you move from S1 to S4.
The important demarcation line in ways money can be spent is between S2 and S3. In other words, the issue that matters most is your money versus someone else’s money. If you’re spending your own money on someone else, your spouse or children, for example, you still take the expenditure seriously. You still pay a price if you don’t look for bargains.
A new Gallup survey finds that “Americans believe, on average, that the federal government wastes 51 cents of every tax dollar, similar to a year ago, but up significantly from 46 cents a decade ago and from an average 43 cents three decades ago.” This is a good example of “the wisdom of crowds.” The trend shows that the crowd is wising up regarding the implications of gargantuan government.
The survey respondents are correct in their assessment of how government spends money, and you need go no further than Friedman’s distinctions of how to spend money in understanding the source of the problem.
My guess would be that many of the respondents would think the government doesn’t necessarily need to waste half the public’s money. The problem, however, is it’s the nature of the beast. Because of the realities Friedman refers to, the government will never be able to spend money as effectively as the private sector.
The problems associated with how the government spends money are not the result of who’s running the government. The problems are systemic. Unless government is seriously downsized, waste and inefficiency will remain problems no matter which party is in power.
The source of the problem can be further clarified by keeping in mind the observations of another economist, Steven Landsburg: “Most of economics can be summarized in four words: People respond to incentives.” (That’s the first sentence in his excellent book, The Armchair Economist.)
The incentives for spending money wisely and efficiently are simply too weak when it’s not your own money. It’s no skin off your nose if the benefits of the expenditure are a small fraction of the costs. When it’s your own funds being used, you will not only restrict your expenditures to things having more benefits than costs, you will choose the ones you think will have the highest ratio of benefits to costs.
When it’s your own money you’re spending, it costs you something when you spend it foolishly. That’s not to say that we never spend our own money foolishly, but it comes out of our own hides when we do. When we spend our own money foolishly, we’re left with less money to spend well. It’s a self-policing structure. Of course, your incentives are even stronger when you worked hard for the money in question.
When a politician or bureaucrat spends taxpayer money it’s treated essentially a freebie. It’s only natural that taxpayer money gets treated like monopoly money. Politicians and bureaucrats have virtually no incentive to care about the value of an expenditure or its cost. This is a profound disadvantage of public spending that will never, ever go away.
Contrary to the straw-man accusations of some liberals, conservatives do not advocate zero government expenditures. Conservatives definitely are not anarchists. Nevertheless, the inherent and inescapable inferiority of spending someone else’s money on someone else is a strong argument for minimizing the size of government. The public’s opinion that the amount of government waste has been increasing parallels the exponential growth of government.
The Solyndra fiasco is another recent confirmation of Friedman’s observations. Despite alarm bells going off, the Obama administration pushed the doomed endeavor forward. Why not? It wasn’t their money, after all. Because it has now becoming so notorious, it appears the administration may pay a political price. Nevertheless, half a billion dollars of taxpayer money has gone down a rat hole. Unfortunately, Solyndra is the rule, not the exception. Absurdly generous public employee pension plans are another predictable result of spending someone else’s money.
Friedman said that the fourth spending alternative is how we spend forty percent of GDP. He was, I think, referring only to budgetary expenditures. Forty percent is a lot. Unfortunately, it understates the full extent of the problem.
The vast regulatory apparatus of the government is basically a system of spending someone else’s money on someone else. It is estimated that government regulations currently cost the economy $1.7 trillion a year. For example, requiring a private business owner to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to comply with the American with Disabilities Act is a clear case of spending someone else’s money on someone else. Requiring a private business to spend a million dollars doing an “environmental impact report” is a clear example of spending someone else’s money on someone else. Spending a million dollars or more on an EIR, in fact, is an example of spending someone else’s money for no one and for nothing. Minimum wage laws likewise are a case of spending someone else’s money on someone else.
The billions of hours Americans spend each year preparing their tax returns is a case of spending someone else’s time on someone else. Time is money, as they say, and most people I know complain a lot more about a scarcity of time than they do of money.
When you spend your own money (or time) on yourself, or for your loved ones, the process is essentially self-regulating. The incentives are automatically aligned with waste minimization. When such incentives are not present, elaborate and complex systems of rules and artificial punishments must be put in their place. There can never be enough rules and regulations to match the effectiveness and elegance of the self-regulating market.
We need to let more freedom back in the USA and get the big federal government off of our backs.
Funding Government by the Minute

At the rate the federal government spends, it runs out of money on July 31. What programs should be cut to balance the budget and fund the government for the remaining five months of the year? Cutting NASA might buy two days; cutting the Navy could buy fifteen. It seems that balancing the budget may require more than just cutting government programs. What should be done?
It is sad to me that we can’t learn from history. So many european countries are so far down the socialist road that there is little economic growth and there is massive budget problems. Under Obama we are heading the same way as this cartoon demonstrates today on Dan Mitchell’s blog.
One tiny correction, though. The Europeans aren’t socialists anymore. It’s more accurate to describe the policy in France, Italy, and elsewhere as cronyism, corporatism, or statism.
What about providing some evidence that Obama’s making America more like Europe? Well, just check out the data from the latest Economic Freedom of the World annual report.
There are now six European nations that score above the United States, including two of my favorite places – Switzerland and Estonia!

The University of Tennessee defeated Arkansas 81-74 in Thompson Boling Arena. Jordan McRae scored a season-high 34 points and Jeronne Maymon added 17 to lead the Vols to victory.

Cuonzo Martin was gracious in the post game press conference after the victory over Arkansas in Knoxville. I texted some of my Vol relatives and asked if they were watching the game. One nephew of mine is a UT student but he didn’t make it to the game that night. My son Hunter and I watched the game together. I predicted that we would lose by 15 and not be competitive but I was wrong and we had the lead by 8 with about 10 minutes left, but we had a cold streak of making only one field goal in the last 8 minutes of the game. Also Tennessee hit 15 of their last 20 from the free throw line in the last 6 minutes while Arkansas only hit 11 foul shots the whole game.
I got pretty negative about this year’s team when I realized that if we lost to Tennessee that we would be 1-4 in the conference after losing to Georgia and Texas A&M recently plus losing to Florida when they did not have their best player and the game was in Fayetteville against the Gators!!!!
I still think that Mike Anderson will get it going next year but this year may be toast. My son Wilson thought we would win last night but that just did not happen. Tennessee has a special player in Stokes and if he stays next year then he may be really special!!!
Knoxville, Tenn. – Despite becoming the first visiting team to score 70 points at Thompson-Boling Arena this season, Arkansas couldn’t fend off a late charge by Tennessee in an 81-74 SEC loss on Wednesday night.
The Vols’ second half run was led by senior Jordan McRae, who scored 24 of his season-high 34 points in the final frame. McRae’s 12-of-14 night at the free throw line was a large part of Tennessee out-scoring the Razorbacks 30-11 at the charity stripe, while getting there 21 more times.
Arkansas led by as many as eight, 63-55 (11:30), in the second half and even limited the Vols to just one made field goal over the final 8:18, but fell victim due to 15-of-20 shooting at the free throw line by the home team over the final 6:31.
With under three minutes to play and Arkansas holding a 68-66 lead, the Razorbacks were whistled for a flagrant-1 foul underneath the hoop in a halfcourt set. Tennessee took advantage of the foul, making both free throws and getting the ball to McRae on the ensuing in-bounds pass for a three that gave the Vols five points in a matter of six seconds.
The three-pointer following the flagrant foul was part of a critical 7-0 run that jump-started the Vols and McRae, as he scored the team’s final 13 points to secure Tennessee’s (12-6, 3-2) 10th home win of the year.
Senior Coty Clarke led Arkansas (12-6, 1-4) with 16 points, including 14 in the second half, and nine rebounds, while junior Rashad Madden (15), redshirt senior Fred Gulley III (11) and seniorKikko Haydar (10) all finished in double figures.
Keys To The Contest Arkansas was whistled for 29 fouls compared to 15 on the Vols, leading to a 38-17 edge in foul shot attempts for Tennessee. The result was a commanding 30-11 edge in points that out-weighed the Razorbacks’ advantage in points in the paint (30-26), points off turnovers (20-17), second chance points (19-7), fast break points (10-4) and bench points (25-6).

I know that you don’t agree with my pro-life views but I wanted to challenge you as a fellow Christian to re-examine your pro-choice view.

I have debated with Ark Times Bloggers many times in the past on many different subjects. Abortion is probably the most often debated subject and I have noticed that many pro-life individuals are now surfacing on the Arkansas Times Blog. Here are some examples. Arhogfan501 asserted: This is the beginning of the end for recreational abortion in Arkansas. Songbird777 noted: Babies have a right to live and not be chopped up for someone else’s convenience. The person using the username “baker” commented: Planned Parenthood (PPA) does not nor cannot provide mammograms, indeed no affiliate has the necessary license. PPA is an abortion provider and at some 900 plus killings a day rather prolific.
Here is another debate I got into recently on the Arkansas Times Blog and I go by the username “Saline Republican”:
“This is just the beginning. Our rights, our freedoms are being violated. Choices made for women by the stroke of a pen that should be made by each woman, her family, her Doctor and her God are not Democracy….”
How about the rights of the unborn women? Ruth Gluhareff Pianalto are you against gendercide? Gendercide is where the parents are told the sex of the child and if they don’t want that sex then they abort. (The vast majority of these abortions are done because parents want a boy!!!!!)

Yesterday we celebrated Ronald Reagan’s 102nd birthday. A little-known fact about President Reagan is that he is the only sitting president to have ever published a book—a book promoting the culture of life.
The 10th anniversary of the Supreme Court decision in Roe v. Wade is a good time for us to pause and reflect. Our nationwide policy of abortion-on-demand through all nine months of pregnancy was neither voted for by our people nor enacted by our legislators—not a single state had such unrestricted abortion before the Supreme Court decreed it to be national policy in 1973. But the consequences of this judicial decision are now obvious: since 1973, more than 15 million unborn children have had their lives snuffed out by legalized abortions. That is over ten times the number of Americans lost in all our nation’s wars.
As we mourned the 40th anniversary of Roe last month, the number of American lives that have been ended at the hand of an abortionist has sadly grown to 55 million.
Reagan saw Roe for what it was, a travesty of law:
Make no mistake, abortion-on-demand is not a right granted by the Constitution. No serious scholar, including one disposed to agree with the Court’s result, has argued that the framers of the Constitution intended to create such a right. Shortly after the Roe v. Wade decision, Professor John Hart Ely, now Dean of Stanford Law School, wrote that the opinion “is not constitutional law and gives almost no sense of an obligation to try to be.” Nowhere do the plain words of the Constitution even hint at a “right” so sweeping as to permit abortion up to the time the child is ready to be born. Yet that is what the Court ruled.
Reagan encouraged pro-lifers not to lose hope:
Despite the formidable obstacles before us, we must not lose heart. This is not the first time our country has been divided by a Supreme Court decision that denied the value of certain human lives. The Dred Scott decision of 1857 was not overturned in a day, or a year, or even a decade. At first, only a minority of Americans recognized and deplored the moral crisis brought about by denying the full humanity of our black brothers and sisters; but that minority persisted in their vision and finally prevailed. They did it by appealing to the hearts and minds of their countrymen, to the truth of human dignity under God. From their example, we know that respect for the sacred value of human life is too deeply engrained in the hearts of our people to remain forever suppressed. But the great majority of the American people have not yet made their voices heard, and we cannot expect them to—any more than the public voice arose against slavery—until the issue is clearly framed and presented.
So what is the issue, clearly framed and presented? Reagan explained:
I have often said that when we talk about abortion, we are talking about two lives—the life of the mother and the life of the unborn child. Why else do we call a pregnant woman a mother? I have also said that anyone who doesn’t feel sure whether we are talking about a second human life should clearly give life the benefit of the doubt. If you don’t know whether a body is alive or dead, you would never bury it. I think this consideration itself should be enough for all of us to insist on protecting the unborn.

The real question today is not when human life begins, but, What is the value of human life? The abortionist who reassembles the arms and legs of a tiny baby to make sure all its parts have been torn from its mother’s body can hardly doubt whether it is a human being. The real question for him and for all of us is whether that tiny human life has a God-given right to be protected by the law—the same right we have.
As we honor President Reagan’s legacy, let us continue to work to build a culture of life.

Why do I keep writing and email Senator Pryor suggestions on how to cut our budget? I gave him hundreds of ideas about how to cut spending and as far as I can tell he has taken none of my suggestions. Dear Senator Pryor,
Why not pass the Balanced Budget amendment? As you know that federal deficit is at all time high (1.6 trillion deficit with revenues of 2.2 trillion and spending at 3.8 trillion).
On my blog www.thedailyhatch.org . I took you at your word and sent you over 100 emails with specific spending cut ideas. (Actually there were over 160 emails with specific spending cut suggestions.) However, I did not see any of them in the recent debt deal that Congress adopted although you did respond to me several times. Now I am trying another approach. Every week from now on I will send you an email explaining different reasons why we need the Balanced Budget Amendment. It will appear on my blog on “Thirsty Thursday” because the government is always thirsty for more money to spend. Today I actually have included a great article below from the Heritage Foundation concerning an area of our federal budget that needs to be cut down to size. The funny thing about the Sequester and the 2.4% of cuts in future increases is that President Obama set these up and then he acted like the sky was falling in as the cartoons indicate in the newspapers.
IF YOU TRULY WANT TO CUT THE BUDGET AND BALANCE THE BUDGET THEN SUBMIT THESE POTENTIAL BUDGET CUTS PRESENTED BELOW!!

17 Reasons the large national debt is a big deal!!!
We got to stop spending so much money and start paying off our national debt or the future of our children and grandchildren will be very sad indeed. Everyone knows that entitlement spending must be cut but it seems we are not brave enough to do it. I have contacted my Congressmen and Senators over and over but nothing is getting done!!! At least there are 66 conservative Republicans in the House that have stood up and voted against raising the debt ceiling. INSTEAD OF VOTING FOR THE DEBT CEILING INCREASE EVERY TIME PRESIDENT OBAMA ASKS YOU TO, WHY DON’T YOU VOTE AGAINST IT AND THAT WILL FORCE CONGRESS TO BALANCE THE BUDGET NOW!!!! If you want a spending cut suggestion then that is the best one I can think of!!!
Remember the debt? That $17 trillion problem? Some in Washington seem to think it’s gone away.
The Washington Post reported that “the national debt is no longer growing out of control.” Lawmakers and liberal inside-the-Beltway organizations are floating the notion that it’s not a high priority any more.
We beg to differ, so we came up with 17 reasons that $17 trillion in debt is still a big, bad deal.
Some families and businesses won’t be able to borrow money because of high interest rates on mortgages, car loans, and more – the dream of starting a business could be out of reach.
5.High debt and high spending won’t help the economy.
8. Jeopardizes the stability of Medicare, Social Security, and Medicaid.
Millions of people depend on Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security, but these programs are also the main drivers of the growing debt. Congress has yet to take the steps needed to make these programs affordable and sustainable to preserve benefits for those who need them the most.
9. Washington collects a lot, and then spends a ton. Where are your tax dollars going?
In 2012, Washington collected $2.4 trillion in taxes—more than $20,000 per household. But it wasn’t enough for Washington’s spending habits. The federal government actually spent $3.5 trillion.
College students from all over the country got together in February at a “Millennial Meetup” to talk about how the national debt impacts their generation.
14. Makes us more vulnerable to the next economic crisis.
According to the Congressional Budget Office’s 2012 Long-Term Budget Outlook, “growing federal debt also would increase the probability of a sudden fiscal crisis.”
15. Washington racked up $300 billion in more debt in less than four months.

The Balanced Budget Amendment is the only thing I can think of that would force Washington to cut spending. We have only a handful of balanced budgets in the last 60 years, so obviously what we are doing is not working. We are passing along this debt to the next generation. Young pro-lifers march on Washington in 10 degree weather!!!
WASHINGTON – A member of the United States Congress has declared that the pro-life movement is winning the fight over abortion. New Jersey Republican Congressman Chris Smith told the many thousands gathered Wednesday at the National Mall for the annual pro-life rally that their side was gaining the upper hand.
“By the grace of God and because of you … we are winning,” declared Smith, whose House Bill 7, or the “No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act,” will soon be up for a vote in the House of Representatives.
“To the youth, especially, never quit or grow weary or discouraged. Your generation will end abortion.”
Smith’s remarks were part of the 41st annual March for Life, a large-scale demonstration of pro-life activists, speakers and supporters who go to the National Mall on the anniversary of the controversial United States Supreme Court case Roe v. Wade.
In addition to Smith, other elected officials present at the March for Life included House Majority Leader Rep. Eric Cantor (R-Va.), Rep. Vicky Hartzler (R-Mo.) and Washington state Democratic Rep. Roger Freeman.
Illinois Democratic Rep. Dan Lipinski was scheduled to appear, but delays at an airport in the state he represents prevented his attendance.
Large numbers of pro-life activists from across the U.S., including young people, clergy and political groups endured snow covered ground and temperatures in the teens.
Tom Hogan, grand marshal for the 2014 March for Life and longtime supporter of the pro-life cause, told The Christian Post about the strength of the march, despite the frigid weather.
“When I woke up this morning I thought, why did God do this to us, give us such a cold day for the March for Life,” said Hogan. “But then I thought, what He wants us to do is show our determination and that no matter what, we are against abortion and we want to get Roe vs. Wade overturned.”
Hogan also told CP that he found the recent wave of abortion clinic closings and state level legislation as a hopeful indicator that Roe would eventually be overturned.
“There is a big movement across the United States and particularly from younger people. Every year I notice in the march that the age group gets younger and younger,” said Hogan. “I would say also that it seems to be that mostly at the state legislatures or state level that a lot of this is going on. I don’t see it at the federal level.”
March for Life Education and Defense Fund President Jeanne Monahan told The Christian Post that the abortion debate was “the human rights issue of today.”
“We want to do everything we can to bring a speedy end to abortion,” said Monahan, who introduced many of the speakers for the rally phase of the March for Life.
“We’ve seen a lot of success at the level of the states. More laws are passed at the level of the states. These are informed consent law, parental consent, health clinic regulations, etc. These are common sense laws.”

Great thinkers throughout the course of history have queried, “Where did it all come from? Who made the cosmos? What made the cosmos? What or who holds it all together? What is the meaning of life? What is the basis of knowledge? Where are we heading? And where do we go when we die? For those who reject a personal Creator – the questions posed above become totally unanswerable. For all those who reject a personal Creator, there is a hopelessness that lies under their dogmatic certainty.
Genesis in Space and Time by Francis Schaeffer examines the flow of Biblical history. The book of Genesis sets the parameters and helps articulate a Christian worldview that includes a personal God. “He is there and he is not silent” as Schaeffer remarks in another book. At the core of the book stands the belief in a personal Creator. Affirming macroevolution or denying a personal Creator stands behind the hopelessness among the unbelieving world. Schaeffer adds, “It is either not knowing or denying the createdness of things that is at the root of the blackness of modern man’s difficulties. Give up creation as space-time, historic reality, and all that is left what Simone Weil called ‘uncreatedness.’ It is not that something does not exist, but that it just stands there, autonomous to itself, without solutions and without answers.” The proliferation of the so-called new atheism is vivid proof that Schaeffer articulated almost forty years ago.
Schaeffer maintains that one must understand the book of Genesis in order to develop a workable approach to metaphysics, morality, and epistemology. Genesis in Space and Time continues to be relevant as many evangelicals back away from a literal interpretation of Scripture and a six-day creation week. Genesis in Space and Time is prophetic, bold and relevant. A powerful antidote for postmodern skeptics.
