Ark Times Blogger claims life begins for unborn child at birth and not a minute earlier (includes video ABORTION OF THE HUMAN RACE)

Max Brantley of the Arkansas Times Blog reprinted a story of a 38 year old later telling his story. She got an abortion when she was 23 for just selfish reasons. The lady identified herself as a Christian.

This lady’s story prompted the person using the username “Polecat” to say this, “There are no such things as egg people. Life begins at birth.”

I replied:

Pole cat says, “There are no such things as egg people. Life begins at birth.”

Most everyone disagrees with you on that. Can you imagine a doctor trying to abort a baby just minutes before it is going to be born?

In the first episode of WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE HUMAN RACE. Dr. C. Everett Koop put forth the question:

My question to the pro-abortionist who would not directly kill a newborn baby the minute it is born is this, “Would you have killed it a minute before that or a minute before that or a minute before that or a minute before that?” You can see what I am getting at. At what minute does an unborn baby cease to be worthless and become a person entitled to the right to life and legal protection?

Taking the roof off

For L’Abri, the brainchild of 20th-century giant Francis Schaeffer, turning 50 is an opportunity to celebrate and revive what is golden in its unique approach to evangelism

Half a century ago, an American pastor named Francis Schaeffer opened his home in Switzerland to anyone who was struggling with the basic questions of life. It was the beginning of L’Abri, a word meaning “shelter.” Over the years, student backpackers, troubled atheists, and thoughtful Christians found their way to this chalet in the Alps. Here they met biblical truth, explained not only with a sophistication that was then rare in evangelicalism-but lived out.

Many who trekked the Alpine hillsides to L’Abri became Christians and learned how to engage their cultures and to apply their faith to all of life. Two generations on, the influence of Francis and Edith Schaeffer and the ministry of L’Abri is evident among evangelical Christians everywhere in their approach not only to evangelism and the church but also to the sciences, arts, business, and politics.

Schaeffer died of cancer in 1984. But L’Abri continues with branches all over the world: in Australia, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, England, Korea, Canada, and two in the United States (in Southborough, Mass., and Rochester, Minn.). These centers for training in Christian philosophy are the legacy of a man who-according to long-time associate and founder of the Francis Schaeffer Institute Jerram Barrs-never considered himself a theologian or philosopher, but simply a pastor and an evangelist.

Schaeffer became a Christian when he was 17, after reading the Bible from beginning to end and finding that it gave answers to questions he struggled with. He studied at Faith Seminary and pastored churches in Delaware, Pennsylvania, and St. Louis.

In St. Louis, Schaeffer and his wife Edith started a ministry, Children for Christ. At the same time, conflicts and schisms in the Presbyterian Church forced him to defend a high view of Scripture against liberal theology. He started the International Council of Christian Churches to counter the World Council of Churches. This took him to Europe, where he settled in Switzerland in 1948.

But L’Abri had its genesis in a spiritual crisis that engulfed Schaeffer in 1950-1951. Depressed by church politics and power struggles, Schaeffer wrestled with the question: “How could people stand for truth and purity and God’s holiness without ugliness and harshness?” He became dissatisfied, too, with his own failures to live out the faith as the Bible describes it, according to Mr. Barrs.

Schaeffer felt these problems so deeply that he began to question whether Christianity, if it has so little effect, could be true. Once again, as he did when he was 17, he plunged into Bible reading in search of answers. He found them, becoming convinced that not only salvation but sanctification and the whole of the Christian’s life are by faith. “The sun came out again,” he said, and he found “a new song in my heart.”

Now, in addition to holding Bible studies in the Schaeffer home and working with children, the Schaeffers began discussion groups for their teenage daughters and friends to hear their questions and to tell about the Bible’s answers.

On June 5, 1955, the Schaeffers drew up a plan to turn their home into a place where people could come to work out their problems and to practice “true spirituality.” Without finances and with no assurance that they would be allowed to stay in Switzerland, the Schaeffers purchased property in Huemoz, a rural village high in the mountains with a spectacular view of the Alps.

Ranald Macaulay, a student at Cambridge who became involved with the Schaeffers in the early days (and later married their daughter Susan), said the founding of L’Abri was consistent with its organizing principle: to live in constant dependence on the grace of God. At a March 11-13 Jubilee for L’Abri Fellowship at the America’s Center in St. Louis, Mr. Macaulay said the Schaeffers resolved to do no advertising for workers, no marketing to attract newcomers, no fundraising, and no planning-principles in stark contrast to most other ministries.

The Schaeffers saw L’Abri as a unique experiment-they did not necessarily recommend this radical dependence on God’s providence as a pattern for other ministries-but the needs always were met. Concerned with reaching individuals, the Schaeffers were content with small numbers. Over time, however, the effect of their work multiplied. Over 1,000 L’Abri alumni attended the jubilee celebration, an event that was equal parts conference and family reunion.

Os Guinness, Harold O.J. Brown, and Chuck Colson-all major evangelical thinkers who were shaped by L’Abri-gave addresses. Screenwriter Brian Godawa, who wrote To End All Wars, gave a workshop on transforming Hollywood. Theologian and cultural critic Vishal Mangalwadi, from India, talked about his upcoming television documentary series on the impact of the Bible, The Book of the Millennium. Book tables overflowed with titles by L’Abri Alumni.

Workshops focused on the various facets of “The Central Themes of L’Abri,” “Transforming All of Life,” and “True Spirituality.” The evenings closed with classical music concerts.

But unlike most idea-packed conferences, the program also scheduled in time for fellowship: an hour and a half devoted to lunch; 30 minutes between sessions; free afternoons and early evenings so people had time to talk. People who had grown close in the Christian community of L’Abri but who had not seen each other for decades hugged and laughed and resumed their conversations. Family members recalled the early days. Mr. Macaulay said the Schaeffers cleared out the furniture, set up chairs, and made elaborate preparations in their chalet, while Schaeffer, wearing a black suit, preached a brilliant sermon-all for three people. Mr. Macaulay remembers thinking, “Oh, if everybody could hear this!” In those days, he said, it was exciting when 10 people showed up at L’Abri.

At first Schaeffer resisted taping the lectures, fearing it would spoil his spontaneity. But one day his daughter Susan surreptitiously hid in an ivy plant a microphone attached to her portable cassette player. The tapes circulated in student groups in England, creating a demand for more tapes and a steady supply of L’Abri pilgrims. Eventually, he turned some of his lectures into books.

More and more people-students, hippies, homosexual priests, drug addicts, and other wanderers trying to “find themselves”-sought out this “shelter” in the mountains. Some stayed for a few weeks, others for several months. By the 1970s, several hundred might be there at a time, staying in chalets built on the expanding property above a switchback mountain road.

Schaeffer exchanged his American preacher’s black suit for lederhosen and a walking stick. He engaged visitors in personal discussions fed also by the growing number of L’Abri workers who joined in the ministry. Visitors took part in the life of the community, eating meals together, doing physical labor, studying the Bible, prizing deep conversations, and walking in the mountains. This remains the pattern today in the L’Abri branches around the world, except that Schaeffer is heard only on tape.

In the course of 50 years, according to Larry Snyder, director of Rochester L’Abri, no one knows how many people went through L’Abri. No one kept records. What mattered then-and is evident now (see sidebar)-is that L’Abri was a life-changing experience.

Schaeffer persuaded nonbelievers to face up to the contradictions in their own worldviews by revealing their inability to account for what is most important in life (love, beauty, meaning). He would, as he described it, “take the roof off,” bringing the nonbeliever almost to the point of despair, to acknowledge his lost condition. Then he applied the gospel of Christ. While conversant in the theology of Kuyper, Dooyeweerd, and Van Til, Schaeffer was captive only to the worldview set forth in the Bible-God’s good creation, man’s fall into sin and its consequences, the redemption through Christ-which he said accords with reality in all of its dimensions. Nonbelievers cannot bring themselves to be completely consistent with their own presuppositions, an inconsistency that is a result of common grace. “Thus, illogically,” he wrote in 1948, “men have in their accepted worldviews various amounts of that which is ours. But, illogical though it may be, it is there and we can appeal to it.”

Even with hostile visitors, Mr. Barrs said, Schaeffer “had an acute sense of people’s brokenness and fallenness,” and “thus would treat them with compassion.”

Out of those encounters grew a body of written work: Escape from Reason (1968), True Spirituality (1971), and He Is There and He Is Not Silent (1972). Schaeffer developed extraordinarily fruitful concepts: how human beings need both “form and freedom”; how people today compartmentalize their lives into a meaningless objective “lower story” (the realm of science and fact) and a mystical, nonrational “upper story” of subjectivity and emotion (which becomes the realm of religion, aesthetics, and morality); how human beings are sinful and broken due to the Fall, yet how at the same time human beings have an intrinsic value and dignity, bearing the image of God.

Those concepts-fueled by practical discussions and communal living at L’Abri-quickly gathered public momentum. Before L’Abri, many conservative Protestants had no problem with legalizing abortion, considering it a Catholic issue and responding out of a knee-jerk anti-Catholicism. But the Schaeffers showed that abortion-along with the growing acceptance of euthanasia and the coming genetic engineering-constitutes a horrible assault on all that it means to be human. With the book and video series How Should We Then Live? (1976) and Whatever Happened to the Human Race? (1979), Schaeffer’s ideas spread to a broader audience. With A Christian Manifesto (1981), he called evangelicals to the fight against abortion and to political activism to reverse what he saw as the trend toward both moral anarchy and political tyranny.

Such an extended ministry was a partnership with Schaeffer’s wife. “If time allowed, a whole seminar could be devoted to the work of Edith Schaeffer,” author and L’Abri alum Os Guinness told the jubilee crowd. Health problems, including a deteriorating esophagus, prevented Schaeffer’s wife Edith, 92, from attending the St. Louis jubilee. Always an active part of L’Abri and an author herself, she is currently in a Swiss hospital. There, according to Udo Middleman, husband to Schaeffer daughter Debbie, the family is battling the very dangers Schaeffer described as family members insist on active treatment and care for Mrs. Schaeffer against a European medical establishment that is content to withhold treatment and to allow her simply to die.

Those struggles only emphasize that, in many ways, the culture of relativism, irrationalism, and self-centeredness that Schaeffer anticipated is here. “Postmodernists are so focused on I, me, myself that they have trouble focusing on any thing beyond themselves,” said L’Abri Australia leader Frank Stootman. And yet, he said, the Schaeffer method of taking people with their presuppositions to their logical conclusions and showing the superiority of a biblical worldview is still effective.

Per Staffan Johansson, of L’Abri in Sweden, told WORLD that seekers today are less philosophical than they were in the 1960s. Instead of wrestling with questions about the meaning of life and other objective truth, they are more preoccupied with problems of relationships and the meaning of their jobs and professions. “We do more in Sweden with vocation,” he said. “And yet, this is what L’Abri has always done,” relating faith to all of life.

Mr. Guinness said that “the genius of Schaeffer’s apologetics has yet to be fully unwrapped.” When asked about reaching the culture, Mr. Guinness said that one of Schaeffer’s great insights is that we have to reach not cultures but individuals. Each individual has his or her own questions, personal struggles, and moral brokenness. Schaeffer took them all seriously, addressing people one by one, while giving them-sometimes for the first time-a sense of belonging to a community.

Many approaches to evangelism and church growth today are impersonal, relying on manipulative formulas and the techniques of mass marketing and consumerism. L’Abri honors the dignity and the distinct spiritual needs of each individual. Many evangelicals think Christianity needs to be dumbed down and made easier to make it attractive to people today. L’Abri teaches that Christianity has substance and depth, that it has something to offer to thoughtful, educated people, and that-undiluted-biblical Christianity can change their lives.

Fifty years later, evangelicalism once again faces the problem of being negative or ineffectual, worldly, or out of touch. L’Abri remains.

One hundred years ago today, the most powerful defender of economic liberty in American history was born in Brooklyn to poor Jewish immigrants.

Though he stood barely five feet tall, Dr. Milton Friedman was a giant in the field of economics and the most important friend of freedom America has seen in the past century — perhaps even since the Founding Fathers.

A 1976 Nobel-prize winner for his research on monetary policy, he is best remembered for eloquently dismantling economic falsehoods. Because of Friedman, most Americans know that government can’t spend its way out of economic trouble or create economic prosperity.

Well, most Americans except our current president, anyway.

At a time when half of the world’s people were economically enslaved by communism, Friedman’s writings laid the groundwork for the small government ideas of Barry Goldwater and, later, the Reagan Revolution.

Friedman’s book “Capitalism and Freedom” is to free market principles what “The Communist Manifesto” is to communism. The biggest difference is that Marx and Engels’ ideas are responsible for the deaths of more than 100 million people, while the free market philosophies championed by Friedman and others have resulted in worldwide improvements in quality and quantity of life.

With local, state and federal governments all dipping deeper into taxpayers’ pockets and spending more money on less justifiable programs, it is a particularly worthwhile time to reflect on one of Dr. Friedman’s most legendary statements.

“There are four ways in which you can spend money,” Friedman said. “You can spend your own money on yourself. When you do that, why then, you really watch out what you’re doing, and you try to get the most for your money.

“Then you can spend your own money on somebody else. For example, I buy a birthday present for someone. Well, then I’m not so careful about the content of the present, but I’m very careful about the cost.”

“Then,” he continued, “I can spend somebody else’s money on myself. And if I spend somebody else’s money on myself, then I’m sure going to have a good lunch! Finally, I can spend somebody else’s money on somebody else. And if I spend somebody else’s money on somebody else, I’m not concerned about how much it is, and I’m not concerned about what I get. And that’s government. And that’s close to 40 percent of our national income.”

Let’s hope a few bureaucrats and elected officials read those words and show a little more concern for the people who furnish all of those dollars.

Though Friedman died in 2006, his birthday should be celebrated by every person who believes that people — not government — are the reason why we live in the richest, healthiest, safest, most prosperous time in the history of the world.

Below in this article you will see that Mitch Mustain did not say it was wrong to pull him. I am glad that he did not say that because we were winning with him but it was because we had the best two running backs that ever played together. He did have a big pass against Alabama to Ben Cleveland that was the game winner but Mustain also had some key interceptions through the season if I remember right. When he was pulled against South Carolina we went on to win and we had our best game of the season the next week against Tennessee and I have put a story about that this one that discusses the film about Mitch Mustain.

The Identity Theft of Mitch Mustain opens with a home video of Mustain as a small child playing football in his yard, just as millions of other children did at the same age. Nolan Richardson’s voice narrates over the raw footage, describing sports in the most innocent terms.  “Sports are good!” he exclaims, citing the important role sports can have in teaching teamwork and organization and so on and so forth.

Then, the movie spends the next 90 minutes apparently trying to disprove that theory.

The story involves most of all the worst parts of college sports. The filthiness of recruiting. Coaches pushing their own agendas at the expense of their players. Inappropriately meddlesome boosters. Media and fans twisting teenagers into demigods. Power, corruption, deceit, influence, ambition. It’s all very Game of Thrones, with the Broyles Center taking place of the Iron Throne and everybody forgetting that the point of high-level college football is the crystal football. And no dragons.

It’s red meat for those that despise the extravagance of big-time college athletics.

The movie is well-done. Interviews with Mustain, several members of the Arkansas media and a few others are inter-spliced with old game and news footage. Those who have followed the story closely through the years may not find much new information (although Mustain’s description of former USC teammate Mark Sanchez was an unexpected highlight), but it does provide an interesting perspective on who Mustain was and is and how he’s dealt with the events that, at least to many people in his home state, will always define him.

This, in effect, is where the title of the film comes from.  That Mustain, regardless of what actually happened in those tumultuous years in Fayetteville or will happen in the future, has been strongly defined one way or the other by nearly everyone in Arkansas and around the country who’s ever heard some piece of his story. The film even features quick clips from locals around what is presumably the Fayetteville area giving their varied opinions on the quarterback.  To the public, Mitch Mustain is much like a one-hit wonder band. Regardless whatever happens, the Hanson boys will always be the kids responsible for “MMMBop”.

But the title is also somewhat of a misnomer, as Mitch Mustain doesn’t come across at somebody stuck in a cage of the world’s expectations. He comes across as a 25-year old still searching for his own identity. Some kids, as Mustain describes USC quarterback Matt Barkley, have their future figured out when they’re small kids. Some people figure out who they are in college, and some people are well into their 20s before they figure it out. The end of the movie focuses on the many different things Mustain has tried his hand at doing since leaving USC, which include professional baseball, selling cars, and his current role as an Arena League quarterback. He doesn’t come across as angry, bitter, or regretful. He comes across as a young guy trying different things out.

Mitch Mustain is frequently described in the film as having difficulty being a high-profile quarterback without having the personality of a typical jock. He’s described as a shy, introverted guy who is interested in things like military history and broader culture, who just happens to be good at this thing called football.  That’s understandable.

But even though football may not be his primary interest, he’s still clinging to it after he’s had several opportunities to remove himself from it. Playing in the Arena League suggests he either actually loves football quite a bit, or at least finds the lifestyle comfortable. He’s obviously free to leave the sport behind and use his degree in international relations to begin a different type of career for himself, but he’s choosing to continue playing the sport with which most people identify him with.  And good luck to him for that.

If anything, you leave the movie just hoping Mustain is eventually able to figure out what he wants to do and put the insanity of his past behind him.

It’s very easy for people to look at someone like Mustain and try to pinpoint exactly what it is he should do with his life. It’s something we do all-too-frequently with recruits choosing colleges as well as generally every public figure facing a choice. But no matter what we think of Mustain playing Arena League football or selling cars or talking about joining the military, it’s up to Mustain to figure that out for himself, just as it is for all of us.

Our identities are not something that just happens instantaneously, even if others may define us by one action. A person’s true sense of self is developed slowly over time. Mustain’s life experiences aren’t normal. They’re not even normal for a high-profile quarterback. It’s a unique story that’s taken him time to make sense of it all. Mitch Mustain is a young man trying to figure out what he can do with his life. His identity hasn’t been stolen. It’s still being developed.

I watched it with The Wife, who lived through the story as a fan along with me. I asked her if the movie made her feel any differently about Mustain or his saga and she said that it did. She feels she has a much more thorough understanding about the story and sees Mustain in a much more positive light.

Overall I think it’s a good movie. Even if you think you know the whole story, it may still be worthwhile to see it. If nothing else, it is interesting to see Mustain openly discuss the whole thing. Recommended.

One really big pet peeve I have with this saga, and it was relied on heavily in the film, is the reference to Mustain being 8-0 as a starter. While that’s technically true in the same sense that it’s technically true to argue Tim Tebow led the Denver Broncos to the second round of the NFL Playoffs, it doesn’t exactly tell the entire story.

Yes, Mustain showed flashes of greatness as a freshman (Vanderbilt, Ole Miss, and the game-winner to Ben Cleveland against Alabama), but he also had his share of struggles on the field. Infamously, he only threw one pass in the eighth victory over South Carolina. It’s not like he was playing really amazing football, threw a pick and then was pulled that night in Columbia (to his credit, Mustain admits as much in the film).

Can we please give more credit to Darren McFadden for the success of 2006? From the Auburn game on, McFadden became a legend that season, earning his first of two Heisman runner-ups. I know we all know that. But McFadden and Felix Jones only received a couple of passing references in the movie. Specifically, that Carolina game was one of McFadden’s greatest games as a Razorback.

Mustain deserves his credit for what he did well on the field that year, but so does McFadden, Jones, Hillis, Monk and everybody else. All the more reason for McFadden and others to be featured on some sort of in-stadium ring of honor-type designation.

Okay, that’s it. Rant over.

UPDATE: I’ve gotten several questions about this and I want to make it clear: at no point in the movie does Mustain actively promote that he was 8-0 and/or that pulling him was a mistake.  At no point does he take credit from anybody else for those victories – he doesn’t even give credit to himself. Mustain comes across well in the film and is very humble about the 2006 season. He describes himself as “trying to keep [his] head above water.” He does mention the rest of the team as being key to the 10 wins the team earned that season, and even that he never believed he was the best option to quarterback the team that year.

This rant is directed not towards Mustain, but to any fan or media member (some of whom are included in the movie, many of whom are not but easily found on message boards and social media) who point to the 8-0 stat as definitive proof that Mustain was the trigger for that team’s success. There were, remarkably, 14 NFL Draft picks on that team. It was one of the most loaded Arkansas teams since joining the SEC. Mustain was a big part of many of those victories, but it was much more than any single player. He admits as much.

In other words, this isn’t even directed so much at the movie, but to anyone still using this general talking point.  If Mustain’s story was still a timely topic on a routine basis, I’d save this for that time, but this story doesn’t come up as often as it used to, so I wanted to make sure I got this out. And it is referenced in the film, so I felt it was apt.

McFadden, Arkansas rout Tennessee

Nov 12, 2006 – 5:08 AM FAYETTEVILLE, Arkansas (Ticker) — No matter where he lined up, Darren McFadden caused Tennessee tons of problems.

McFadden rushed for 181 yards and two touchdowns and passed for a score as No. 11 Arkansas remained perfect in Southeastern Conference play with a 31-14 rout of the 13th-ranked Volunteers.

Marcus Monk had eight catches for 137 yards and two TDs for the Razorbacks (9-1, 6-0 SEC West), who can clinch a berth against sixth-ranked Florida in the conference championship game with a win next week at lowly Mississippi State.

“Our guys see things and see that we might be able to win an SEC title, and they are excited,” Razorbacks coach Houston Nutt said. “They know what’s in front of them and they are loving it.”

Arkansas is 6-0 in SEC play for the first time.

“With what happened in the Auburn game (a loss to Georgia), we knew coming in that if we won tonight we would have more cushion in the SEC,” McFadden said. “The offensive line did a great job opening the holes tonight and I just had to hit them hard.”

A sophomore, McFadden gave Arkansas a 14-0 lead with a 17-yard run with 12:37 remaining in the second quarter. After Tennessee halved its deficit on a 27-yard pass from first-time starter Jonathan Crompton to Robert Meachem, McFadden restored a two-score advantage with a 12-yard TD toss to Monk with 6:51 to go in the period.

“When Darren is at quarterback we are very versatile and can keep the defense guessing,” Monk said. “He can hand it off to Felix (Jones), throw it or run the ball.”

McFadden added a five-yard TD run with 2:46 left in the half, and Jeremy Davis opened a 31-7 cushion on a 28-yard field goal with 9:40 to play.

“It’s hard to simulate the speed of No. 5 (McFadden),” Vols coach Phillip Fulmer said. “He is the best back we have seen this year.”

A redshirt freshman taking over for the injured Erik Ainge, Crompton completed 16-of-31 passes for 174 yards, two TDs and an interception for Tennessee (7-3, 3-3 East), which saw its slim chances of winning its division disappear with a 28-24 home loss to Louisiana State last week.

“I expected it to be loud and hostile, but I don’t think it affected me as much as I thought it would,” Crompton said. “(But) I wasn’t as mentally prepared for (the environment) as I should have been.”

“(He’s) a young guy,” Fulmer said. “This environment would get to anybody. It’s tough to ask him to come here and carry this team.”

Casey Dick, who took over for true freshman quarterback Mitch Mustain early in a 26-20 win last week at South Carolina, went 10-of-15 for 154 yards.

“Some teams in front of us in the polls lost today, so it gave us some opportunity,” Dick said. “Now after our win tonight, hopefully we will get respect.”

The Staple Singers – I’ll Take You There (1972)

There are certain songs that were so universally popular that they define moments in our lives. Well the Staple Singers’ “I’ll Take You There” definitely qualifies as one of those songs. Written by Alvertis Isbell, produced by Al Bell this song was the number one song nationally by June of 1972 and it hasn’t stopped playing somewhere since!

There sound has never been duplicated and I don’t believe it ever will. Here’s just a small taste of a classic.

Here they are: Pops, Mavis, Cleotha and Yvonne hailing from Chicago by way of Mississippi! The Staple Singers!

That pattern finally changed with Staples’ 2004 album Have a Little Faith, her first release following the death of her father in 2000. Have a Little Faith received rave reviews, paving the way for Staples to achieve a late career renaissance with the albums We’ll Never Turn Back (2007) and Live: Hope at the Hideout (2008). Her most recent album, 2010’s You Are Not Alone, won the Grammy Award for Best Americana Album.

Impact on Music

Mavis Staples will doubtlessly go down in history as one of the greatest gospel singers of all time, the breathtaking voice powering one of America’s great family bands, The Staple Singers. From the traditional gospel music of the 1950s to the 1960s protest songs that underscored some of the decade’s most dramatic social changes, from the self-empowerment anthems of the 1970s to the soulful love tunes and mature Americana of more recent years, Staples and her family have consistently created some of the best and most inspirational music of the past half-century.

And although Staples is now more than 70 years old, she has no intention of giving up the calling that has consumed her since she was a child. “Ain’t no stopping me, I will sing,” Staples declared in a recent interview. “You know, you’d have to come and scoop me off the stage. I’m gonna sing till I die.”

Sometimes when I get down about Arkansas Football like I am now after losing 52-7 to South Carolina, I like to think about the years that Arkansas was still in the hunt for the national title in November. There are not that many years since Lou Holtz left that you can say that. 1998, 2006 and 2011 come to mind. In 2006 we lost to LSU in Little Rock and I was at that game. In 2011 we had a chance to beat LSU and we would be in a 3 way tie for the SEC West and possibly go to the SEC Championship game and we even started that game with two quick touchdowns to take a 14-0 lead but we could not hold on.

The best opportunity to win a national title may have been the one that we let slip through our fingers in 1998 in November in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Every Friday, The SEC Blog will feature one classic game from the storied history of SEC football.

For almost every team that wins a national championship, there’s always that one game that stands out. That one game that’s viewed as an escape more than a win.

In 1998, the Arkansas game was “that game” for the Tennessee Volunteers.

The game matched two unbeaten teams, with the Vols sporting the No. 1 ranking while the Razorbacks were ranked No. 9.

Arkansas capitalized on two Tennessee first half turnovers to surge out to a 21-10 lead at the half, stunning the crowd of 106.365 fans at Neyland Stadium.

The two teams swapped field goals and Tennessee quarterback Tee Martin scored from four yards out to cut Arkansas’ lead to 24-20 heading into the fourth quarter.

For more than 12 minutes in the fourth quarter, the two teams weren’t able to crack the scoreboard, but it wasn’t without excitement.

Vols’ defensive back Deon Grant blocked a field goal attempt midway through the fourth, but Tennessee didn’t capitalize. Time was running out, and Arkansas looked like it was going to win this battle and keep its national championship hopes alive.

Arkansas was attempting to ice the game away with under three minutes to play, but the drive stalled and the Hogs were forced to punt from their won 41-yard line with 2:56 to play. The snap sailed over Hogs’ punter Chris Akin’s head, and Akin kicked the ball out of the end zone for a safety.

Trailing 24-22, the Vols couldn’t move against Arkansas’ defense, and turned it over on downs with under two minutes to play. The Vols needed a miracle.

They got it.

Needing only one first down to put the game away, Arkansas quarterback Clint Stoerner stumbled after taking the snapped, dropped the ball on the turf, and Billy Ratliff recovered on the Hogs’ 43-yard line with 1:43 to play.

Tennessee running back Travis Henry ran five straight times, scoring the game-winning touchdown with 31 seconds left.

The 28-24 win kept Tennessee’s dream season alive, which culminated with a 23-16 win over Florida State in the Fiesta Bowl to claim the BCS National Championship.

I remember thinking that Arkansas’ best victory in 2006 was over the ranked Tennessee Vols in Fayetteville. It was a very exciting game and Arkansas held on at the end and won. Mitch Mustain actually did not play in that game. That was the first game that he did not play in. He had been benched the game before.

Former Arkansas Razorbacks QB Mitch Mustain talks to the touchdown club October 14, 2013 at the Embassy Suites in Little Rock.

There’s no love lost between former Arkansas quarterback Mitch Mustain and former Razorbacks coach Houston Nutt.

When asked if he had talked to Nutt since transferring from Arkansas in January 2007, Mustain said he hadn’t.

“It was a bad situation from the beginning,” Mustain said. “There were a lot of promises made that shouldn’t have been made. A lot of expectations created that looking back now couldn’t have been fulfilled. It was the nature of it. You’re not going to be able to change somebody like that.”

Mustain, originally from Springdale, spoke tothe Little Rock Touchdown Club on Monday afternoon at the Embassy Suites in Little Rock, in part to promote Matthew Wolfe’s documentary, The Identity Theft of Mitch Mustain, and received a standing ovation from the crowd of more than 150 people.

The film will be shown at 8 p.m. Friday and 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival.

Mustain, who was the Gatorade, Parade Magazine and USA Today Player of the Year in 2005 as a senior at Springdale High School under Coach Gus Malzahn, was the nation’s top quarterback prospect in 2006 and signed with Arkansas.

Mustain was part of the Springdale Five, college recruits on the Bulldogs state championship team that also included receivers Andrew Norman and Damian Williams, tight end Ben Cleveland and offensive lineman Bartley Webb. Mustain, Norman, Williams and Cleveland signed with Arkansas and Webb went to Notre Dame, which also recruited Mustain.

Mustain took over as the starting quarterback in his second game at Arkansas, which had hired Malzahn to be Nutt’s offensive coordinator. Mustain started the next eight games, and Arkansas won them all, though he played a minor role in the eighth victory, 26-20 at South Carolina.

Mustain was benched after throwing an interception on Arkansas’ first series against South Carolina in favor of Casey Dick, who quarterbacked Arkansas to two more victories – over Tennessee and Mississippi State – to clinch the SEC West title.

But Arkansas lost its final three games – to LSU (31-26) in the regular-season finale at War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock, to Florida (38-28 in the SEC Championship Game) and to Wisconsin (17-14) in the Capital One Bowl to finish 10-4.

Mustain didn’t start another game for the Razorbacks after being pulled from the South Carolina game.

“It was destined from the beginning not to work, but that’s the way it worked out,” Mustain said. “They hired Gus and they persuaded all of us [to sign with Arkansas].”

Malzahn left Arkansas after one season to go to Tulsa to be the offensive coordinator. Mustain transferred to Southern California in 2007 and was mainly a backup behind Mark Sanchez and Matt Barkley in his careerwith the Trojans.

Mustain said he still has a close relationship with his former high school coach, Malzahn, who went from Tulsa to Auburn as offensive coordinator before taking over as head coach at Arkansas State last season.

Malzahn, now head coach at Auburn, offered Mustain a job on his staff with the Tigers, but Mustain turned it down.

That’s because Mustain, 25, is still playing football, now as a quarterback for the Arena Football League’s San Jose Sabercats. Mustain completed 50 of 93 passes for 632 yards, 11 touchdowns and 3 interceptions in 11 games for the Sabercats, who finished 13-5 this past season.

Playing indoor football, something he had not previously experienced, has been an adjustment, Mustain said.

“You have the same speed,” he said. “The guys have been there for a while. It’s a quarter of the area of a big field, so it moves very quick. You can’t do a lot of things you can do on a big field, but you can do some things a little different.”

Before getting back into football, Mustain pitched in the Chicago White Sox organization in 2012 before leaving baseball because of elbow pain.

“At my age, it was tough anyway,” he said. “I was a 24-year-old rookie free agent. It’s a tough sport. I told them I have a whole new respect for it. It was too much wear and tear.

“I needed to make a decision if I wanted to press on and risk having a career-ending injury or getting back into football, which is what I love and what I want to do.”

Mustain, who also works at a firefighting training facility in Mesa, Ariz., mentioned the Naval Academy as a place where he would have liked to have attended school. And he did express regret about going to Arkansas, to some degree.

“Part of me wonders sometimes, ‘Hey, I shouldn’t have taken it,’ ” Mustain said. “At the end of the day, you can’t second-guess yourself that way.

“I made the decision based on what was best for me at that time, what I wanted to do at that time. It didn’t work out. That’s just the way it goes.

“I’ve had good opportunities since that have come from that. I don’t complain too much about it.”

I wanted to share with you some about my pro-life perspective.

The PBS NewsHour interviewed former Surgeon General, Dr. C. Everett Koop, on the anniversary of the first surgeon general’s report on smoking. Jim Lehrer interviewed Koop for a newsmaker conversation for the The MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour from the surgeon general’s office in Washington on Jan. 11, 1989. Koop died Monday at the age of 96.

Gary Brookings of the Richmond Times Dispatch did a very funny editorial cartoon about the time in 1988 when Dr. C. Everett Koop sent the unapproved mail  piece out to millions of homes about AIDS. There were many such cartoons at the time since everyone knew Dr. Koop got the mail piece out the door before anyone in the Reagan Administration had a chance to stop it. I have shared some cartoons of Dr. Koop before and some are funnier than others.

On 2-25-13 we lost a great man when we lost Dr. C. Everett Koop. I have written over and over the last few years quoting Dr. C. Everett Koop and his good friend Francis Schaeffer. They both came together for the first time in 1973 when Dr. Koop operated on Schaeffer’s daughter and as a result they became close friends. That led to their involvement together in the book and film series “WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE HUMAN RACE?” in 1979.

In the film series “WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE HUMAN RACE?” the arguments are presented  against abortion (Episode 1),  infanticide (Episode 2),   euthenasia (Episode 3), and then there is a discussion of the Christian versus Humanist worldview concerning the issue of “the basis for human dignity” in Episode 4 and then in the last episode a close look at the truth claims of the Bible.

In this 1979 film series they dealt with the big social issues and predicted what social problems we have in the future because of humanism. For instance, they knew that the Jack Kevorkians of the world would be coming down the pike. They predicted that there was a slippery slope from abortion to infanticide to youth euthanasia brought on by the materialistic worldview.

“Of 607 second trimester abortions done at Mt. Sinai Hospital in Hartford, Connecticut, 45 resulted in live births. Although a fetus may live only a few hours, it must be pronounced dead by a physician, must receive both a birth and death certificate, and is sent to a funeral director for burial or cremation. A more expedient solution is offered in the publication of The International Correspondence Society of Obstetrics and Gynecologists (Nov 1974)

“At the time of delivery it has been our policy to wrap the fetus in a towel. The fetus is then moved into another room while our attention is turned to the care of the gravida (the mother) … Once we are sure her condition is stable, the fetus is evaluated. Almost invariably, all signs of life have ceased.”

“Hysterotomy gives the fetus the best chance for survival, but it is allowed to die through neglect or sometimes killed by direct act. In 1977 a Boston jury found Dr. Kenneth Edelin guilty of manslaughter for killing the fetus of this type of abortion. Dr. William J. Waddill, Jr., an obstetrician in California, was indicted and tried in 1977 for allegedly strangling to death a baby born alive following a saline abortion. The trial resulted in a hung jury when the judge introduced new thoughts on the California definition of death. The former mother-to-be sued for $17 million on grounds that she was not adequately informed of the possible outcome of the abortion.

“In 1977 the medical staff at Hollywood’s Memorial Hospital (Florida) protested, “We’ve had preemies that have lived that were less developed than some of the abortions were.”

Many liberals actually truly do argue for abortion rights over human rights. Prochoice advocate Elizabeth Williams came out and said that on 1-23-13 in her article on Salon. We hear reasons for abortion such as poverty,and  child abuse,  but why not consider adoption? Instead, the political left will stop at nothing to push the pro-abortion agenda. Why not stop and take an honest look at when life begins for the unborn child and when she begins to feel pain?

Summary

Francis Schaeffer and, former Surgeon General, C. Everette Koop deal directly with the devaluing of human life and its results in our society. It did not take place in a vacuum. It is a direct result of a worldview that has rejected the doctrine of man being created in the image of God. Man as a product of the impersonal, plus time and chance has no sufficient basis for worth.

If man is not made in the image of God, nothing then stands in the way of inhumanity. There is no good reason why mankind should be perceived as special. Human life is cheapened. Max Brantley of the Arkansas Times Blog reprinted a story of a 38 year old later telling his story. She got an abortion when she was 23 for just selfish reasons. The lady identified herself as a Christian.

This prompted the lady using the username “BluesYouCanUse” to write:

Some 25 years ago, I found out I was pregnant with our third child. My husband was much older than me; I was 34 at the time. I had a third-grader and a toddler. I worked in a demanding job, and was the primary breadwinner for the family. We contemplated abortion. My husband told me he’d support my decision, whatever it was. I chose to have my baby, and I’m grateful I did (though I damn surely had my tubes tied afterward).

That said — the important thing was that it was MY decision. Not my husband’s. Not my legislator’s. Not my doctor’s. Not my pastor’s. Not my neighbors nor my friends nor my employers. I did, in fact, feel like it was not the right thing for me to do. I would never presume to decide for another woman if it were or were not the right thing for HER to do.

I’ve also lost a child to miscarriage at 11 weeks. I cannot testify as to when “life begins,” but I can tell you that that fetus did not, to me, feel like a person. A potential person, perhaps, but not a person. Not a life. Not an individual. Yes, I know the scriptures that pro-life advocates quote in support of their position. I might feel a bit more inclined toward their position if they were as prone to, at the same time, obey scriptures just a few pages away which admonish them to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, care for the sick and the widowed and the orphans, and give to the poor. I’m also cognizant that the main pro-life argument comes from Paul, who was decidedly on the misogynistic side.

We have a lot more problems in our state than the tiny percentage of women who terminate unwanted pregnancies. Up to and including the problems that lead to a lot of those pregnancies. I wish our legislature were as interested in those issues.

I replied:

Bluesyoucanuse, you obviously think that it was your decision and not your husband’s since a “34 year old woman” has a right to her own body. I AGREE WITH YOU THAT A 34 YEAR OLD WOMAN HAS A RIGHT TO HER OWN BODY!!!! By the way a 20 year old woman has a right to her own body and a 15 year old woman has a right to her own body and a 10 year old woman has a right to her own body and a 2 year old woman has a right to her own body and a 1 day old woman has a right to her own body and an unborn woman that has been in the womb for 8 months has a right to her own body and an unborn woman that has been in the womb for 5 months has a right to her own body and an unborn woman that has been in the womb for 1 month has a right to her own body and so on.
Therefore, when you choose abortion then you are killing your child which by the way you say you were glad that you had. Isn’t it great that your child has brought you so much joy in your life and how could imagine life without him or her?

“The battle to feed all of humanity is over. In the 1970s hundreds of millions of people will starve to death.”

That was Paul Ehrlich’s prediction in 1968. He was wrong then, and he’s still wrong now, as he touts his new paper warning that a cocktail of population growth, global warming, and starvation will lead to worldwide collapse of civilization unless severe measures are taken to reduce population around the globe. Ehrlich is a Stanford professor and the author of the 1968 book The Population Bomb.

Only the dates have changed in his predictions from his original book. The new paper, published by London’s Royal Society on January 9, warns of imminent mass death from calamities such as “sea-level rise, crop failures and violent storms”—yet the author says reducing the population is the key to preventing this population reduction.

Needless to say, his earlier predictions did not come true. But now he is back in the news for his latest doomsday prophecy, and more importantly, his proposed cure: We must “reduce the human population size” through providing “all sexually active human beings with modern contraception and backup abortion”— at taxpayer expense.

Much like his original predictions, the media are taking Ehrlich seriously. The Huffington Post frames his proposal for worldwide birth control and abortion as “timely”:

Wondering how to save the world? A Stanford University husband and wife team of population biologists has a suggestion: Empower women everywhere. Pretty revolutionary stuff, eh? According to Anne Ehrlich, senior research scientist, and Paul Ehrlich, Bing Professor of Population Studies and senior fellow at the Woods Institute for the Environment, giving women more power means lower population growth, which means less stress on resources. In light of the fact that we’re approaching a global population of 9 billion, their recommendations seem quite timely.

Now NBC and even Forbes have been giving Ehrlich coverage.

“Nobody, in my view, has the right to have 12 children or even three unless the second pregnancy is twins,” Ehrlich said in an interview with The Raw Story, a left-leaning website.

This is the same Paul Ehrlich who, with his colleagues (including John Holdren, who now works as President Obama’s science and technology advisor), lost a widely publicized bet with the late free-market economist and author Julian Simon.

Simon was skeptical of The Population Bomb’s predictions that world starvation and resource shortages would doom mankind in the ’70s and ’80s. Confident that market-driven technological advances would increase the number of resources available through efficiency and new finds faster than humans could consume them, he challenged Ehrlich to a wager: Pick any five resources over any period of time longer than a year, and they will be cheaper at the end of the period than at the beginning.

In 1980, Ehrlich picked chromium, copper, nickel, tin, and tungsten and bet they would cost more at the end of the decade. According to Wired magazine, “Between 1980 and 1990, the world’s population grew by more than 800 million, the largest increase in one decade in all of history. But by September 1990, without a single exception, the price of each of Ehrlich’s selected metals had fallen, and in some cases had dropped through the floor.”

But that does not matter to Ehrlich, who now contends, “[I]t’s crystal clear if we keep the populations of the rich growing, then the poor aren’t going to have a chance, and eventually, the descendants of the rich aren’t going to have a chance.”

As hundreds of thousands of pro-life activists remember the anniversary of Roe v. Wade and the 55 million babies aborted in the United States, it is unbelievably sad that people are joining Ehrlich’s chorus. Earlier this week, the famed British documentarian Sir David Attenborough launched into the following tirade:

We are a plague on the Earth. It’s coming home to roost over the next 50 years or so. It’s not just climate change; it’s sheer space, places to grow food for this enormous horde. Either we limit our population growth or the natural world will do it for us…

Little does it matter to people like Ehrlich and Attenborough that population control has usually been deeply rooted in eugenics, a science attempting to reduce “undesirable” populations, as Daniel Patrick Moloney has documented.

Nor does it seem to matter that attempts at population control have only resulted in outcomes such as China’s oppressive and coercive one-child policy, which, coupled with a cultural preference for boys, is not only decimating the country’s demographics, but causing the sex-selective abortion of millions of baby girls.

Fortunately, pro-life advocates succeeded yesterday in halting the Obama Administration’s attempt to include abortion in the list of rights protected by the United Nations. This week, we can hope they will continue to make progress toward protecting lives in the United States.

FREE TO CHOOSE “Who protects the worker?” Video and Transcript Part 3 of 7

In 1980 I read the book FREE TO CHOOSE by Milton Friedman and it really enlightened me a tremendous amount.  I suggest checking out these episodes and transcripts of Milton Friedman’s film series FREE TO CHOOSE: “The Failure of Socialism” and “What is wrong with our schools?”  and “Created Equal”  and  From Cradle to Grave, and – Power of the Market. Milton Friedman shows in this episode how the worker is best protected and it is not by the government!!!!!!!

In this episode Milton Friedman makes the following comment about immigration:
” In the free labor market everybody benefits. When the market is restricted, things are very different. These Mexicans are heading for the United States side of the boarder. There are real problems about permitting unrestricted immigration into a welfare state. It’s one thing when people come for jobs and are on their own which is the case through most of American history. It’s another thing when a welfare system will support them come what may at the expense of other people.”

Government protects its workers just as trade unions protect their members. But both do it at someone else’s expense. It doesn’t have to be that way.

Dick Pashley is an electronics engineer. He designs memory systems for computers. He works for Intel Corporation, one of many companies which have sprung up south of San Francisco at a place that they call Silicon Valley.

Dick Pashley: All these companies have one thing in common. They are trying to get engineers to work on their projects. Now myself, I’m one of these engineers and so obviously I get letters in the mail, phone calls, the like, where people are trying to get me to leave Intel and go to this particular company. One of the companies right across the street here, Intercel, is one of the new companies that’s forming in this area. And they are hunting for people just like myself to come in and what they do is they’ll offer you like typically a like a 30% higher salary, stock options, a bonus and several other things to get you to move to their company. Since it’s not really a move, it’s very easy to do because you’re only going across the street. It’s not a big traumatic thing where you are leaving let’s say one city and moving to another. It’s very straightforward.

Friedman: In the free labor market everybody benefits. When the market is restricted, things are very different. These Mexicans are heading for the United States side of the boarder. There are real problems about permitting unrestricted immigration into a welfare state. It’s one thing when people come for jobs and are on their own which is the case through most of American history. It’s another thing when a welfare system will support them come what may at the expense of other people. Yet look what happens when you try to interfere with market forces.

Worker: Well there’s fairly large groups of aliens on the hillsides waiting for dark to set in. Other groups that are still on the Mexican side of their boarder. They’ll be coming in shortly I imagine. We have electronic sensors buried in along the hillsides around the most traveled trails to alert us from these alien crossings. And from the sensor we work ahead of them, try to head them off.

Friedman: This is not a case of good guys against bad guys. The officers are simply trying to do their duty. The poor Mexicans are driven by hunger and attracted by the prospect of jobs.

Worker: You do good work.

Friedman: The law enforcing people have an impossible job.

Officer: They’re gonna run, they’re gonna get picked up sent back but sooner or later their going to make it one minute after the next.

Friedman: In one month in 1978 60,000 illegal immigrants were arrested on this stretch of the boarder. But believe it or not, the boarder patrol estimated at nearly 200,000 found their way through to places like this in northern California where there was work waiting for them.

Illegal Mexican immigrants are not cheap labor around here. Many earn more than the minimum wage law demands. They can do so because farmers need many extra hands during the harvest season and there is a shortage of domestic labor available. Jill Hammond and her partner run a farm that produces plump California raisins.

Jill Hammond: There’s pending legislation which would make it illegal for farmers to hire undocumented workers. And supposedly it would impose a $1,000 fine per worker on the farm, I can’t imagine that it would actually go through. If it did there’d be a full scale farmers revolt around here.

Victor Bedvian: Matter of fact, last year there was quite a bit of activity in the Kermin area which is about 15 miles west of Fresno. Many of the farmers banded together and as much as we warned the boarder patrol to stay off their property. They were going to back that up with guns I’m afraid. They were very upset about it and because their situation was desperate. They needed the workers and they needed the work to be done now. And the boarder patrol was interfering with that as they saw it.

Friedman: Violence by employers to assure the availability of workers is no more justifiable than violence by trade unions to assure their members jobs. But violence is one of the things you are very likely to get when you try to prevent a deal between people who have jobs to offer and people who are looking for jobs. 15 years ago the economy of Spartanburg, SC was stagnant. It depended on peaches and cotton. Wages were lower than the national average and unemployment was higher than the average. Then, dramatically, the picture changed. The people in Spartanburg decided to make their town a center of free trade. They did this by using a new right to work law, eliminating many restrictions on labor. The city council cut taxes to the bone. They advertised the fact that Spartanburg was a place worth investing in.

By any standards, let alone Spartanburg’s, the result was revolutionary. Industrialists came from Germany, Switzerland and all over the world to build factories to set up plants. The workers of Spartanburg clearly benefited from the new industries. The first to notice were the people who owned and ran the traditional industries.

M.L. Cates: In terms of the business, it has been a problem for us. It means we’ve got to be on our toes, we’ve got to be sure we’re providing a good work place that we are providing good jobs and what have you, and that we are running as competitively as possible. I think that on the worker’s point of view, this is certain to provide them with more opportunities to, for a market for their product, their labor, their expertise.

Dear Senator Pryor, here are some spending cut suggestions (“Thirsty Thursday”, Open letter to Senator Pryor)

 Why do I keep writing and email Senator Pryor suggestions on how to cut our budget? I gave him hundreds of ideas about how to cut spending and as far as I can tell he has taken none of my suggestions. You can find some of my suggestions here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here,  here, and  here, and they all were emailed to him. In fact, I have written 13 posts pointing out reasons why I believe Senator Pryor’s re-election attempt will be unsuccessful. HERE I GO AGAIN WITH ANOTHER EMAIL I JUST SENT TO SENATOR PRYOR!!!

Dear Senator Pryor,

Why not pass the Balanced  Budget amendment? As you know that federal deficit is at all time high (1.6 trillion deficit with revenues of 2.2 trillion and spending at 3.8 trillion).

On my blog www.thedailyhatch.org . I took you at your word and sent you over 100 emails with specific spending cut ideas. (Actually there were over 160 emails with specific spending cut suggestions.) However, I did not see any of them in the recent debt deal that Congress adopted although you did respond to me several times. Now I am trying another approach. Every week from now on I will send you an email explaining different reasons why we need the Balanced Budget Amendment or I send you specific spending cut suggestions. It will appear on my blog on “Thirsty Thursday” because the government is always thirsty for more money to spend.

IF YOU TRULY WANT TO CUT THE BUDGET AND BALANCE THE BUDGET THEN SUBMIT THESE POTENTIAL BUDGET CUTS PRESENTED BELOW!!

People say the government has a debt problem. Debt is caused by deficits, which is the difference between what the government collects in tax revenue and the amount of government spending. Every time the government runs a deficit, the government debt increases. So what’s to blame: too much spending, or too little tax revenue? Your Tax Dollars at Work: Subsidizing the Security of Wealthy Allies

It’s Tax Day, and for millions of Americans that means ponying up to the IRS. The federal government does many things these days—most of which would be more efficiently carried out at the local level, or in the private sector. But Uncle Sam also engages in a particular form of charity that many Americans overlook: spending many tens of billions of dollars to defend wealthy, developed nations.

A new Cato infographic puts it all in perspective. It shows how much American taxpayers spend to subsidize the security, and to defend the interests, of other nations that are more than capable of defending themselves.

The average American spends $2,300 on the military, based on the latest data available. That is roughly four and a half times more than what the average person in other NATO countries spends. These countries boast a collective GDP of approximately $19 trillion, 25 percent higher than the U.S. They obviously can afford to spend more. So why don’t they? Because Uncle Sucker picks up nearly the entire tab.

Looked at another way, U.S. alliances constitute a massive wealth transfer from U.S. taxpayers (and their Chinese creditors) to bloated European welfare states and technologically-advanced Asian nations.

Despite the size and wealth of our allies, they are military dwarfs compared to the United States. The particularly galling comparison is the disparity between what the United States spends on the military as a percentage of the federal budget and what other countries spend on their military relative to total government spending.

While the United States spends 20 percent of the budget on the military, Japan spends a paltry 2.3 percent. Our NATO allies? The average is 3.6 percent. Even South Korea’s share of military spending is roughly half of our total, and they have much bigger threats to worry about. By providing for their security, we have encouraged allies to divert resources elsewhere.

The Constitution stipulates that the federal government should provide for the “common defence.” But the document never talks about providing for the defense of other nations. Their citizens are not party to our unique social contract. On this tax day, you might rest assured that wealthy citizens around the world are grateful that you are defending them, but don’t hold your breath waiting for a word of thanks.

It is time to rethink our alliances and the culture of dependency we have created among our allies. They have become wards to Uncle Sam’s dole. Only by ceasing to foot the security bill for them will we create an incentive for them to spend more.

The Balanced Budget Amendment is the only thing I can think of that would force Washington to cut spending. We have only a handful of balanced budgets in the last 60 years, so obviously what we are doing is not working. We are passing along this debt to the next generation. YOUR APPROACH HAS BEEN TO REJECT THE BALANCED BUDGET “BECAUSE WE SHOULD CUT THE BUDGET OURSELF,” WELL THEN HERE IS YOUR CHANCE!!!! SUBMIT THESE CUTS!!!!
