Schaeffer:Being Angry at God

Letter Eight
Being Angry at God
In the midst of a fallen world things are abnormal; they have been changed from that which God made them originally.  Christ could be angry at the tomb of Lazarus as He faced the abnormality of death; and we have a right to be angry too.  But to be angry at God is both silly and blasphemous.  One cannot have the Christian answer that men are really significant in history and then expect God to eradicate every wrong result from that significance while allowing the good aspects of that significance to still operate.  If man can influence history, he can influence it for evil and cruelty, as well as for good and noncruelty…

GBCSUMC on Gosnell: What’s abortion got to do with it? #UMC

Many in the world today are taking a long look at the abortion industry because of the May 14, 2013 guilty verdict and life term penalty handed down by a jury (which included 9 out of 12 pro-choice jurors)  to Dr. Kermit Gosnell. During this time of reflection I wanted to put forth some of the pro-life’s best arguments.

In the film series “WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE HUMAN RACE?” the arguments are presented  against abortion (Episode 1),  infanticide (Episode 2),   euthanasia (Episode 3), and then there is a discussion of the Christian versus Humanist worldview concerning the issue of “the basis for human dignity” in Episode 4 and then in the last episode a close look at the truth claims of the Bible.

I truly believe that many of the problems we have today in the USA are due to the advancement of humanism in the last few decades in our society. Ronald Reagan appointed the evangelical Dr. C. Everett Koop to the position of Surgeon General in his administration. He partnered with Dr. Francis Schaeffer in making the video below. It is very valuable information for Christians to have.  Actually I have included a video below that includes comments from him on this subject.

@GBCSUMC on Gosnell: What’s abortion got to do with it? #UMC

The General Board of Church and Society (GBCS) has released a statement on the guilty verdict handed down earlier this week in the trial of Kermit Gosnell, who killed numerous newborns and at least one woman. I’m glad the statement from GBCS condemned the horrible crimes committed by the former abortion practitioner as reprehensible. They certainly were. I’m also very glad that the statement does not contradict our United Methodist Social Principles. There are, nevertheless, a variety of features that make the statement inadequate.
Unclear?
The most glaring problem with the GBCS statement is the way it plays dumb on the relevance of the Gosnell trial to the ongoing debate over abortion. GBCS says, “the case has become the latest battlefield in the abortion debate, but it is unclear why.” Really? Really? To suggest Gosnell’s crimes are unrelated to abortion is so remarkably unbelievable that it boggles the mind. The connection between Gosnell and abortion is clear not only to abortion opponents but to a number of abortion advocates also. Each side draws on that connection to support their own aims, of course; the point is that both see the connection . Taking up the substance of those arguments would have indicated a serious wrestling with the significance of the Gosnell proceedings. Unfortunately, the refusal of GBCS to acknowledge why Gosnell matters with regard to abortion only further undermines the Board’s credibility.
Not Quite Accurate
The statement goes on to say that both supporters and opponents of abortion find Gosnell’s crimes reprehensible. This only is accurate to a degree. It would have been more accurate to say that some abortion supporters find Gosnell’s crimes reprehensible. A growing number of abortion advocates are also calling for the legalization of infanticide. Ethicist Peter Singer has been saying this for years, and others are beginning to join him. The key example is the most recent edition of the Journal of Medical Ethics, which is devoted to debating infanticide and contains articles arguing both for and against the killing of newborns. I point to other examples of this trend in a recent piece for The United Methodist Reporter, and you can follow Michael Bird who is chronicling the “Infanticide Blitz”. This is a debate we are now having. Certainly not all supporters of abortion reject infanticide, but GBCS should not lead us to think that supporters of abortion are of one mind with regard to infanticide. Many abortion advocates find Gosnell’s crimes horrific, but the arguments that gave us constitutionally protected abortion are being applied to newborns in a growing number of diverse arenas. The folks at GBCS need to read the relevant journals and websites and do their homework rather more carefully in order to stay on top of this highly important issue.
Does Location Matter?
The GBCS rightfully expresses sorrow over those who died at Gosnell’s hands: “We mourn the tragic loss of life, as well as the pain and loss Dr. Gosnell has caused countless other women and families.” Absolutely.  I do, too. What I find puzzling, though, is that this sentiment seems inconsistent with other work in which GBCS engages. For example, GBCS is a member of the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice (RCRC), an organization that fights for unregulated and unrestricted access to abortion. They have praised abortion as holy and sacred work. So, when I read that GBCS mourns the loss of these little lives, I can’t help but wonder why given their partnership with RCRC in advancing the abortion agenda? Had these babies been located inside their mother’s womb just a few inches in the other direction, GBCS would not have mourned their loss. To the contrary, by affiliating with RCRC, GBCS has insisted on and celebrated the so-called liberty to end the lives of the preborn, even going so far as to suggest that such is the work of the kingdom of God. For the GBCS to argue that children in the womb have no right to life and, at the same time, express their sorrow over the deaths of the newly born is regrettably incoherent.
So, while there are praiseworthy elements in the GBCS statement on Gosnell’s verdict, it is with great sadness I write that it remains woefully inadequate. I love the United Methodist Church, but today I am deeply grieved by it. United Methodists should be able to expect far more from our Boards. The underlying political agenda of GBCS is covered by a veil all too thin and one that is seen through far too easily. Near the end of the statement, GBCS says, “Each of us must give an account to God for what we do (or do not do) for our fellow brothers and sisters.” Indeed, we must, on both accounts.

I have written on the Book of Ecclesiastes and the subject of the meaning of our lives on several occasions on this blog. In this series on Ecclesiastes I hope to show how secular humanist man can not hope to find a lasting meaning to his life in a closed system without bringing God back into the picture. This is the same exact case with Solomon in the Book of Ecclesiastes. Three thousand years ago, Solomon took a look at life “under the sun” in his book of Ecclesiastes. Christian scholar Ravi Zacharias has noted, “The key to understanding the Book of Ecclesiastes is the term ‘under the sun.’ What that literally means is you lock God out of a closed system, and you are left with only this world of time plus chance plus matter.”

Let me show you some inescapable conclusions if you choose to live without God in the picture. Solomon came to these same conclusions when he looked at life “under the sun.”

  1. Death is the great equalizer (Eccl 3:20, “All go to the same place; all come from dust, and to dust all return.”)
  2. Chance and time have determined the past, and they will determine the future.  (Ecclesiastes 9:11-13)
  3. Power reigns in this life, and the scales are not balanced(Eccl 4:1)
  4. Nothing in life gives true satisfaction without God including knowledge (1:16-18), ladies and liquor (2:1-3, 8, 10, 11), and great building projects (2:4-6, 18-20).

You can only find a lasting meaning to your life by looking above the sun and bring God back into the picture.

Seeing Jesus in Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Job

Doug O’Donnell’s new book is now available: The Beginning and End of Wisdom: Preaching Christ from the First and Last Chapters of Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Job (Crossway, 2011), with a foreword by Sidney Greidanus.

You can read the introduction and first chapter online for free.

TGC now has a page set up providing resources for pastors on preaching from Wisdom Literature, and today they interview O’Donnell on his book.

Here is one exchange:

How would you explain the unique message of each OT wisdom book as it anticipates Jesus?

I hope these Christological summaries below don’t come off as too simplistic. The book shows, I hope, some of the complexities as to the connections I made.

Proverbs: For our own good and the glory of God, the book of Proverbs invites and instructs God’s covenant people—especially young men—to embrace wisdom. For Christians, such wisdom comes through fearing God’s beloved, the Lord Jesus Christ (Eph. 5:21), and walking in his wisdom.

Ecclesiastes: Ecclesiastes is about finding the goodness of God while living within the vanity of this world. Such goodness or “wisdom” is found only through a relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. This relationship involves trusting in Christ and heeding his commands, which brings rest, justice, and joy.

Job: The book of Job prefigures the purposeful sufferings of Christ. That is, the story of God’s servant Job prepares us for the story of Jesus, the suffering servant, who in his passion and death shows how innocent suffering can show forth the justice of God.

Part 2 of 3: ‘What Does The Movie Tell Us About Ourselves?’
A discussion of Woody Allen’s 1989 movie, perhaps his finest.

I have gone back and forth and back and forth with many liberals on the Arkansas Times Blog on many issues such as abortion, human rights, welfare, poverty, gun control  and issues dealing with popular culture . This time around I have discussed morality with the Ark Times Bloggers and have used the examples given in Woody Allen’s movie “Crimes and Misdemeanors” to do so. With out God in the picture to punish the evildoers  in an afterlife, then can people do anything they want because “might makes right.”

Without the infinite-personal God of the Bible to reveal moral absolutes then man is left to embrace moral relativism. In a time plus chance universe man is reduced to a machine and can not find a place for values such as love. Both of Francis Schaeffer’s film series have tackled these subjects and he shows how this is reflected in the arts.

Here are some posts I have done on the series “HOW SHOULD WE THEN LIVE? : Francis Schaeffer’s “How should we then live?” Video and outline of episode 10 “Final Choices” , episode 9 “The Age of Personal Peace and Affluence”, episode 8 “The Age of Fragmentation”, episode 7 “The Age of Non-Reason” , episode 6 “The Scientific Age” ,  episode 5 “The Revolutionary Age” , episode 4 “The Reformation”,  episode 3 “The Renaissance”, episode 2 “The Middle Ages,”, and  episode 1 “The Roman Age,” .

In the film series “WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE HUMAN RACE?” the arguments are presented  against abortion (Episode 1),  infanticide (Episode 2),   euthenasia (Episode 3), and then there is a discussion of the Christian versus Humanist worldview concerning the issue of “the basis for human dignity” in Episode 4 and then in the last episode a close look at the truth claims of the Bible.

In July of 2013 I got into this discussion about morality and the meaning of life with the Arkansas Times Bloggers:

I commented:

Verla wrote, “Saline–your reality depends on believing in something we cannot see, hear or smell, thus faith. Or delusion. Many of us want something more.”

Verla can you see, hear or smell any of the evidence for evolution?

I sent a cassette tape by Adrian Rogers to the famous atheist Antony Flew in 1992 and he wrote me back and said he enjoyed the sermon very much and listened to it with great interest.

Here are the points from that sermon:

What evidence is there that the Bible is in fact God’s Word?
I want to give you five reasons to affirm the Bible is the Word of God.

First, I believe the Bible is the Word of God because of its scientific accuracy. The Truth of the Word of God tells us that God “hangeth the earth upon nothing” (Job 26:7). How did Job know that the earth hung in space before the age of modern astronomy and space travel? The Holy Spirit told him. The scientists of Isaiah’s day didn’t know the topography of the earth, but Isaiah said, “It is [God] that sitteth upon the circle of the earth” (Isaiah 40:22). The word for “circle” here means a globe or sphere. How did Isaiah know that God say upon the circle of the earth? By divine inspiration.

Secondly, the Bible is affirmed through historical accuracy. Do you remember the story about the handwriting on the wall that is found in the fifth chapter of Daniel? Belshazzar hosted a feast with a thousand of his lords and ladies. Suddenly, a gruesome hand appeared out of nowhere and began to write on a wall. The king was disturbed and asked for someone to interpret the writing. Daniel was found and gave the interpretation. After the interpretation, “Then commanded Belshazzar, and they clothed Daniel with scarlet, and put a chain of gold about his neck, and made a proclamation concerning him, that he should be the third ruler in the kingdom.” (Daniel 5:29). Basing their opinion on Babylonian records, the historians claim this never happened. According to the records, the last king of Babylon was not Belshazzar, but a man named Nabonidas. And so, they said, the Bible is in error. There wasn’t a record of a king named Belshazzar. Well, the spades of archeologists continued to do their work. In 1853, an inscription was found on a cornerstone of a temple built by Nabonidas, to the god Ur, which read: “May I, Nabonidas, king of Babylon, not sin against thee. And may reverence for thee dwell in the heart of Belshazzar, my first-born favorite son.” From other inscriptions, it was learned that Belshazzar and Nabonidas were co-regents. Nabonidas traveled while Belshazzar stayed home to run the kingdom. Now that we know that Belshazzar and Nabonidas were co-regents, it makes sense that Belshazzar would say that Daniel would be the third ruler. What a marvelous nugget of truth tucked away in the Word of God!

Third, from Genesis to Revelation, the Bible reads as one book. And there is incredible unity to the Bible. The Bible is one book, and yet it is made up of 66 books, was written by at least 40 different authors over a period of about 1600 years, in 13 different countries and on three different continents. It was written in at least three different languages by people in all professions. The Bible forms one beautiful temple of truth that does not contradict itself theologically, morally, ethically, doctrinally, scientifically, historically, or in any other way.

Fourth, did you know the Bible is the only book in the world that has accurate prophecy? When you read the prophecies of the Bible, you simply have to stand back in awe. There are over 300 precise prophecies that deal with the Lord Jesus Christ in the Old Testament that are fulfilled in the New Testament. To say that these are fulfilled by chance is an astronomical impossibility.

Finally, the Bible is not a book of the month, but the Book of the Ages. First Peter 1:25 says: “But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the Word which by the gospel is preached unto you.” No book has ever had as much opposition as the Bible. Men have laughed at it, scorned it, burned it, ridiculed it, and made laws against it. But the Word of God has survived. And it is applicable today as much as it was yesterday and will be tomorrow.

It’s so majestically deep that scholars could swim and never touch the bottom. Yet so wonderfully shallow that a little child could come and get a drink of water without fear of drowning. That is God’s precious, holy Word. The Word of God. Know it. Believe it. It is True.

That is what Romans chapter 1 teaches us!!!! God put that conscience in you that causes you to know deep down that God exists.

______________

A friend of mine is a street preacher and he preaches on the Santa Monica Promenade in California.

During the Q/A sessions he does have lots of atheists that enjoy their time at the mic. During this time my friend always quotes Romans 1:19 “For that which is known about God is evident to them and made plain in their inner consciousness, because God has shown it to them.” Then he tells the atheist that he already knows that God exists but he has been suppressing that knowledge in unrighteousness. This usually infuriates the atheist.

My friend is actually thinking about coming up with something that would really challenge the atheists and cause them to pause. Recently he asked me if I thought it would be a good idea to set up a lie detector test and see if any of these atheists can beat it. (He knew that I had done a lot of research in the past on this very issue.)

Nelson Price in The Emmanuel Factor (1987) tells the story about Brown Trucking Company in Georgia who used to give polygraph tests to their job applicants. However, in part of the test the operator asked, “Do you believe in God?” In every instance when a professing atheist answered “No,” the test showed the person to be lying.

Dr Adrian Rogers used to tell this same story to illustrate Romans 1:19 and it was his conclusion that “there is no such thing anywhere on earth as a true atheist. If a man says he doesn’t believe in God, then he is lying. God has put his moral consciousness into every man’s heart, and a man has to try to kick his conscience to death to say he doesn’t believe in God.”

It is true that polygraph tests for use in hiring were banned by Congress in 1988. However, Mr and Mrs Claude Brown on Aug 25, 1994 wrote me a letter confirming that over 15,000 applicants had taken the polygraph test and EVERY TIME SOMEONE SAID THEY DID NOT BELIEVE IN GOD, THE MACHINE SAID THEY WERE LYING.

It had been difficult to catch up to the Browns. I had heard about them from Dr. Rogers’ sermon but I did not have enough information to locate them. Dr. Rogers referred me to Dr. Nelson Price and Dr. Price’s office told me that Claude Brown lived in Atlanta. After writing letters to all 9 of the entries for Claude Brown in the Atlanta telephone book, I finally got in touch with the Browns.

Adrian Rogers also pointed out that the Bible does not recognize the theoretical atheist. Psalms 14:1: The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God.” Dr Rogers notes, “The fool is treating God like he would treat food he did not desire in a cafeteria line. ‘No broccoli for me!’ ” In other words, the fool just doesn’t want God in his life and is a practical atheist, but not a theoretical atheist.

I contacted several Southern Baptist Theologians concerning the issue of Psalms 14:1 back in 1995 and received helpful responses from Dr. Lewis A. Drummond, Beeson Divinity School, Samford, Dr. Stephen J. Andrews, Southeastern Baptist Seminary, Dr. Harold Mosley, New Orleans Bapt Seminary, Dr. Gerald L. Keown, Southern Baptist Seminary,Dr. George L. Klein, Criswell College, and Dr. M. Pierce Matheney, Midwestern Baptist Seminary.

Some responded that it is was possible to be a theoretical atheist while some said that the Bible only recognized the practical atheist

Notice also in the movie “Crimes and Misdemeanors” that even though Judah and his brother Jack said they did not believe in God and they planned to kill Judah’s mistress, once the deed is done Judah has a hard time shaking the idea that he will be punished because their still a spark in him telling him that he will be punished by God.

JACK: I just wanted you to know everything came out fine. It’s over and done with, so you can forget about it.

JUDAH: Oh, my God. Oh, my God. I’m in shock, Jack.

JACK: Judah, I’m telling you, it’s like the whole thing never existed. It’s a small burglary. Nothing more. Yeah. So go on back to your life and… put it behind you.

JUDAH: I can’t speak. I need a drink. What am I gonna do? I’ve got guests here now. Jack… God have mercy on us, Jack.

Adrian Rogers: Are fathers necessary?

Adrian Rogers

Another great article from Adrian Rogers.

Are fathers necessary?

“Artificial insemination is the ideal method of producing a pregnancy, and a lesbian partner should have the same parenting rights accorded historically to biological fathers.” Quoted from the United Nations Fourth World Conference on Women, summer of 1995.

You did not see a few isolated reports. There is an international agenda seeking to render fathers legally obsolete. Regardless of their legal success, fathers will always be critical to a healthy society. The United States is becoming overrun with fatherless homes, and suffering the consequences. This epidemic is causing our society to disintegrate and succumb to rampant crime, drug abuse, and poverty.

Fathers are critical to both sons and daughters. Sons need fathers to learn about being a godly man; how to fear God (Proverbs 1:7), have self-control, work hard, and respect women, just to name a few. Try as she might, mom alone will be hard-pressed to teach a son these valuable lessons. For daughters, their entire self-image comes from how they are treated by their fathers. A woman’s relationship with men will likely mirror her relationship with her father. The future of kids, regardless of gender, is firmly anchored in their relationship to their fathers.

Fathers, you have a tremendous responsibility. It’s not just your job to teach children how to become adults. Nearly everything they know about God they will learn from watching you (Acts 16:31). You are a representative of God, don’t let Him down.

Francis Schaeffer- How Should We Then Live? -8- The Age of Fragmentation

Joseph Rozak·

_______________________

I love the works of Francis Schaeffer and I have been on the internet reading several blogs that talk about Schaeffer’s work and the work below by Steve West was really helpful. Schaeffer’s film series “How should we then live?  Wikipedia notes, “According to Schaeffer, How Should We Then Live traces Western history from Ancient Rome until the time of writing (1976) along three lines: the philosophic, scientific, and religious.[3] He also makes extensive references to art and architecture as a means of showing how these movements reflected changing patterns of thought through time. Schaeffer’s central premise is: when we base society on the Bible, on the infinite-personal God who is there and has spoken,[4] this provides an absolute by which we can conduct our lives and by which we can judge society.  Here are some posts I have done on this series: Francis Schaeffer’s “How should we then live?” Video and outline of episode 10 “Final Choices” , episode 9 “The Age of Personal Peace and Affluence”, episode 8 “The Age of Fragmentation”, episode 7 “The Age of Non-Reason” , episode 6 “The Scientific Age” ,  episode 5 “The Revolutionary Age” , episode 4 “The Reformation”,  episode 3 “The Renaissance”, episode 2 “The Middle Ages,”, and  episode 1 “The Roman Age,” .

L’Abri’s Fruit

CIMG0434_edited On a credenza behind Jerram Barrs’ desk there is a striking photograph of his father, standing, unsmiling, in an almost aristocratic pose.  We’re here in St. Louis, at the Francis Schaeffer Institute (FSI) on the campus of Covenant Seminary, to interview Barrs, a Resident Scholar of FSI and as Professor of Christian Studies and Contemporary Culture for the seminary.  It is a complete privilege to be with this man and hear his stories of L’Abri.  He is articulate, warm, and not lacking in a sense of humor.  (I have not met anyone yet who was involved with L’Abri who lacked a sense of humor!).  But despite all the stories, all the good information he shares with us about L’Abri, my eyes are continually drawn to the photograph.  Finally, we ask him about it

Jerram explains that his father, who lived south of London, in Hampshire, was a gardener.  He was also a life-long Communist.  Jerram was reared in a loving home, taught Bible stories, taken to church, and prayed with and for — but his parents did not believe.  After becoming a Christian himself, attending seminary (at Covenant), and working for years with the English L’Abri (which was close to his father’s home), he continued to share with his parents what God was doing in his life.  Though they did not believe, they encouraged him, glad to know that he had found something he was happy in.  At some point, his father contracted cancer and was given six months to live.  During this time Dr. Schaeffer was visiting L’Abri England.  He asked Jerram if his father might like a visit.  Jerram called his father to ask, and his father said that he would like Dr. Schaeffer to visit.  While Jerram took a walk with his mother, Schaeffer visited and he led Jerram’s father to Christ.  Schaeffer said all the letters Jerram had written over the years had really been what led his father to faith, that he was only the one to ask the question.  His father’s question: “How can God love a worm.”  (He was so aware of his sin.)  Schaeffer’s reply:  “How could he not love a worm?  He is God.”  It is a wonderful story.  One can only imagine how many more stories like this come from God’s work through L’Abri.

CIMG0432_edited Another day in St. Louis we spent an entire day with Sylvester and Janet Jacobs.  Janet is English; Sylvester, American.  Janet is white; Sylvester, black.  Both spent a year at L’Abri Switzerland in the late 1960s.  The impact of the Schaeffers and others at L’Abri is evident in the lives of this couple.  Sylvester went to L’Abri shortly after dropping out of Moody Bible College in the mid-1960s.  Already having suffered a great deal under the scourge of racism where he grew up in Boynton, Oklahoma, he was discouraged by what he found at Moody.  Along with a number of public pledges you had to make if you attended Moody (no dancing, smoking, etc.), he was required to sign a secret pledge that had to do with interaction with white students.  He was not supposed to speak to white women on campus, for example, and yet in evangelistic work they did in the black neighborhoods of South Chicago he was required to mentor these same women that, when they arrived back on campus, he could not interact with.  In trying to make sense of things — in trying to determine if God was real — he ended up at L’Abri, where, as he said, he was treated as a human being, as one with dignity, where he came to feel at home in his skin.

Sylvester went on to become a photographer in London and, then, to work with the worst of the worst kids in a school with Muslims, Hindus, Christians, and kids speaking 52 languages.  He saw fruit from that work, a result he says came out of the way he was treated at L’Abri — with love, with dignity, as a human being made in the image of God.

One of the treats for us was seeing a few of the photographs Sylvester took of L’Abri and the Schaeffers in the 1960s.  I was aware of his work because a long out of print book of this photography, Portrait of a Shelters, was published by InterVarsity Press in the early Seventies.  I suspected that he had other photography that did not make it into the book.  I was right.  I’m hopeful that a number of Sylvester’s photos — both previously published and still unpublished — might be utilized in our work.

Finally, we were able to spend time at the PCA (Presbyterian Church in America) Historical Center in the basement of the Buswell LIbrary at Covenant Seminary.  Wayne Spearman, the Chief Archivist here, was extremely helpful to us, pulling out carefully cataloged collections of Schaeffer’s letters (relating to the Bible Presbyterian Church, the churches in pastored, and his relationship his mission board.  There were also reel-to-reel tapes of early L’Abri discussions which we sifted through and make notes on so that we can latter digitize some of them.  Most people wouldn’t be excited by this, but I found myself a bit envious of Wayne and his treasure trove of history.  Interesting find: A letter from neo-orthodox theologian Karl Barth to Schaeffer, someone with whom Schaeffer had obviously had an ongoing dialog, where, in poor English, Barth basically Schaeffer to leave an old man alone!  Were his questions too challenging?  Then there are personal notes like one “P.S. Tell Mr. Bateman I am still thinking about those good chicken dumplings.”  Those are Minutes of Presbytery meetings, reports from Europe, copies of Biblical Missions with articles about their work in Europe, and Children for Christ materials.  Edith’s creativity is evident.  There is a “Door of Salvation” oversize booklet, a creative presentation of what being a Christian is not followed by what it is.  There are even the text of Children for Christ dramatic sketches (like readers’ theater) written by Edith.  Overall, these materials indicate a deep concern about preserving the purity of the church over and against modernity and liberalism in the church.

We left St. Louis greatly enriched.  Good interviews,  Good research.  But most of all we are blessed the more and more we discover of the Schaeffers’ lives and the testimonies of those who they had an impact on.  Kevin and I needed a lift to sustain us in this project, and we got it.  Hearing these stories, reading this history, it’s evident that in God’s Kingdom there are no little people, that His treasure is found in earthen vessels like us.

[You can view some pictures from this trip in the right sidebar — including a picture of the church where Schaeffer preached and the home where they lived.]

How Should We Then Live? Episode 5: The Revolutionary Age

Episode VII – The Age of Non Reason

Dr. Schaeffer’s sweeping epic on the rise and decline of Western thought and Culture

_______________________

I love the works of Francis Schaeffer and I have been on the internet reading several blogs that talk about Schaeffer’s work and the work below was really helpful.

Francis Schaeffer — 25th anniversary of his death

Today is the twenty-fifth anniversary of the death of Christian author, philosopher, and pastor Francis Schaeffer. Schaeffer is highly regarded in the Evangelical Christian world for his defense of the faith, his advocacy of pro-life political action, and leadership of the l’Abri community in Switzerland. Francis Schaeffer was also an advocate of environmental protection.HT: World Magazine blog: Remembering Francis Schaeffer, by Scott LambThe following item was originally posted in January 2008. I have added it to my blog recycling program. Because I have new readers of The GeoChristian, I will occasionally go back and re-use some of my favorite blog entries.

pollution.jpgI recently finished re-reading Pollution and the Death of Man by Francis Schaeffer. If you read only one book on why Christians should care about nature, this is the book. It is short, and fairly easy reading (by Schaeffer standards). It is not a book about “50 ways to be green;” rather it lays the Biblical and philosophical foundations for taking care of the Earth. Even though it was written almost forty years ago, it is still relevant to the environmental issues we face. Unlike many conservative Evangelical leaders, Schaeffer was willing to admit that we face an ecological crisis.

The book has seven chapters:

  1. “What Have They Done to Our Fair Sister?”
  2. Pantheism: Man Is No More Than the Grass
  3. Other Inadequate Answers
  4. The Christian View: Creation
  5. A Substantial Healing
  6. The Christian View: The “Pilot Plant.”
  7. Concluding Chapter by Udo Middelmann

The book also has two essays as appendices. “The Historical Roots of Our Ecologic Crisis” by Lynn White, Jr., and “Why Worry About Nature.” by Richard Means. These were two important essays of the late 1960s; the first was written to state the case that the environmental crisis is Christianity’s fault, and the second was written to present pantheism as the answer.

I gave a long quote a few weeks ago: “I looked at the Christian community and saw ugliness.”

Here are some more quotes:

Near the end of his life, Darwin acknowledged several times in his writing that two things had become dull to him as he got older. The first was his joy in the arts and the second his joy in nature…. The distressing thing about this is that orthodox Christians often really have no better sense about these things than unbelievers.

Our agreement with Means [an advocate of pantheism as the solution to the ecologic crisis] at this point centers on the fact that the hippies of the 1960s did understand something. They were right in fighting the plastic culture, and the church should have been fighting it too, a long, long time ago, before the counterculture ever came onto the scene.

Again, a pantheistic stand always brings man to an impersonal and low place rather than elevating him. This is an absolute rule…. Eventually nature does not become high, but man becomes low…. In the Eastern countries there is no real base for the dignity of man.

Far from raising nature to man’s height, pantheism must push both man and nature down into a bog.

A poor Christianity is not the answer either.

Much orthodoxy, much evangelical Christianity, is rooted in a Platonic concept. In this kind of Christianity there is only interest in the “upper story,” in the heavenly things—only in “saving the soul” and getting it to Heaven…. There is little or no interest in the proper pleasure of the body or the proper uses of the intellect…. Nature has become merely an academic proof of the existence of the Creator, with little value in itself. Christians of this outlook do not show an interest in nature itself.

We should treat each thing with integrity because it is the way God has made it.

The man who believes things are there only by chance cannot give things a real intrinsic value. But for the Christian, there is an intrinsic value. The value of a thing is not in itself autonomously, but because God made it.

But we should be looking now, on the basis of the work of Christ, for substantial healing in every area affected by the Fall.

But Christians who believe the Bible are not simply called to say that “one day” there will be healing, but that by God’s grace, upon the basis of the work of Christ, substantial healing can be a reality here and now.

Here the church—the orthodox, Bible-believing church—has been really poor. What have we done to heal sociological divisions? Often our churches are a scandal; they are cruel not only to the man “outside,” but also to the man “inside.”

The same thing is true psychologically. We load people with psychological problems by telling them that “Christians don’t have breakdowns,” and that is a kind of murder.

On the other hand, what we should have, individually and corporately, is a situation where, on the basis of the work of Christ, Christianity is seen to be not just “pie in the sky,” but something that has in it the possibility of substantial healings now in every area where there are divisions because of the Fall. First of all, my division from God is healed by justification, but then there must be the “existential reality” of this moment by moment. Second, there is the psychological division of man from himself. Third, the sociological divisions of man from other men. And last, the division of man from nature, and nature from nature.

One of the first fruits of that healing is a new sense of beauty.

We are to have dominion over it [nature], but we are not going to use it as fallen man uses it.

Man is not to be sacrificed…. And yet nature is to be honored.

Christians, of all people, should not be the destroyers. We should treat nature with an overwhelming respect.

Most Christians simply do not care about nature as such…. These are reasons why the church seems irrelevant and helpless in our generation. We are living in and practicing a sub-Christianity.

If we treat nature as having no intrinsic value, our own value is diminished.

To just list quotes does not do justice to the stream of reason that Schaeffer develops in this book. If environmental issues are important to you, this is a must-read.

Grace and Peace

Francis Schaeffer

Open letter to President Obama (Part 363)

(This letter was emailed to White House on 12-17-12.)

President Obama c/o The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW
Washington, DC 20500

Dear Mr. President,

I know that you receive 20,000 letters a day and that you actually read 10 of them every day. I really do respect you for trying to get a pulse on what is going on out here.

I truly believe that many of the problems we have today in the USA are due to the advancement of humanism in the last few decades in our society. As you know Ronald Reagan appointed the evangelical Dr. C. Everett Koop to the position of Surgeon General in his administration. Please consider contacting him and asking his opinion concerning humanism. Actually I have included a video below that includes comments from him on this subject.

Francis Schaeffer: “Whatever Happened to the Human Race” (Episode 5) TRUTH AND HISTORY

Published on Oct 7, 2012 by

The 45 minute video above is from the film series created from Francis Schaeffer’s book “Whatever Happened to the Human Race?” with Dr. C. Everett Koop. This book  really helped develop my political views concerning abortion, infanticide, and youth euthanasia, and it gave me a good understanding of those issues.
I was able to watch Francis Schaeffer deliver a speech on a book he wrote called “A Christian Manifesto” and I heard him in several interviews on it in 1981 and 1982. I listened with great interest since I also read that book over and over again. Below is a portion of one of Schaeffer’s talks  on a crucial subject that is very important today too.
A Christian Manifesto
by Dr. Francis A. Schaeffer
This address was delivered by the late Dr. Schaeffer in 1982 at the Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church, Fort Lauderdale, Florida. It is based on one of his books, which bears the same title.
Social  change has followed every great revival in USA
—
We have forgotten our heritage. A lot of the evangelical complex like to talk about the old revivals and they tell us we ought to have another revival. We nee another revival — you and I need revival. We need another revival in our hearts. But they have forgotten something. Most of the Christians have forgotten and most of the pastors have forgotten something. That is the factor that every single revival that has ever been a real revival, whether it was the great awakening before the American Revolution; whether it was the great revivals of Scandinavia; whether it was Wesley and Whitefield; wherever you have found a great revival, it’s always had three parts. First, it has called for the individual to accept Christ as Savior, and thankfully, in all of these that I have named, thousands have been saved. Then, it has called upon the Christians to bow their hearts to God and really let the Holy Spirit have His place in fullness in their life. But there has always been, in every revival, a third element. It has always brought SOCIAL CHANGE!
Cambridge historians who aren’t Christians would tell you that if it wasn’t for the Wesley revival and the social change that Wesley’s revival had brought, England would have had its own form of the French Revolution. It was Wesley saying people must be treated correctly and dealing down into the social needs of the day that made it possible for England to have its bloodless revolution in contrast to France’s bloody revolution.
The Wall Street Journal, not too long ago, and I quote it again in A Christian Manifesto, pointed out that it was the Great Awakening, that great revival prior to the founding of the United States, that opened the way and prepared for the founding of the United States. Every one of the great revivals had tremendous social implications.
__________

Thank you so much for your time. I know how valuable it is. I also appreciate the fine family that you have and your commitment as a father and a husband.

Sincerely,

Everette Hatcher III, 13900 Cottontail Lane, Alexander, AR 72002, ph 501-920-5733, lowcostsqueegees@yahoo.com

“Going Under” is a song by American rock band Evanescence. It was released on September 9, 2003, as the second single from their debut album Fallen. It was written by Amy Lee, David Hodges and Ben Moody, while production was handled by Dave Fortman. Initially planned to be the first single from Fallen, the release of the Daredevil soundtrack eclipsed the decision, resulting in the release of “Bring Me to Life“.

The song contains rock and metal influences among others and its main instrumentation consists of drums and guitars built around Lee’s soprano vocals. The song received mixed to positive reviews from music critics. While failing to chart on the Billboard Hot 100, “Going Under” peaked at number 5 on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart. It charted in the top forty in every country and it was certified Platinum by the Australian Recording Industry Association.

The music video for the song was directed by Philipp Stölzl and it was filmed in May 2003 in Germany. It shows Lee performing on a concert along with the band, while fans are turning into zombies. She designed the both dresses she wears in the video. It ranked at number 12 on the list of “The 15 Scariest Music Videos Ever” published by Billboard. Evanescence additionally added the song to the set-list on their Fallen and The Open Door Tour.

Background and release

Ben Moody (pictured) co-wrote the song along with Amy Lee and David Hodges.[3][4]

“Going Under” was written by Amy Lee, David Hodges and Ben Moody, while production for the song was handled by Dave Fortman.[4] It was the last song written for Fallen although a demo version was recorded before the release of Fallen, and it featured a slightly different sound in the music and Lee’s vocals. An acoustic version was recorded shortly after the release of Fallen, along with several other songs.[1] According to Amy Lee, “Going Under” is about recovering from an abusive relationship, which she has stated in a number of interviews. In an interview with MTV News, Lee further explained the meaning and the inspiration behind the song,

“The lyrics are about coming out of a bad relationship, and when you’re at the end of your rope, when you’re at the point where you realize something has to change, that you can’t go on living in the situation that you’re in. It’s cool. It’s a very strong song.”[5]

The UK single of “Going Under” contains the album version of the song and a live version recorded at WNOR in Norfolk, Virginia.[1][6] An acoustic radio version of “Going Under” and an acoustic version of Nirvana‘s “Heart-Shaped Box,” recorded at WXDX-FM in Pittsburgh are placed on the single as well. The fourth track is the music video for the song.[1] Tim Sendra of Allmusic wasn’t satisfied with the cover of Nirvana saying that Lee’s vocals are “overly dramatic side here and serve to make the song into a bad joke.”[1]

Composition

According to the sheet music published by Alfred Music Publishing on the website Musicnotes.com, “Going Under” is an rock, alternative metal, gothic rock, hard rock and chamber pop song set in common time and performed in slow and free tempo of 84 beats per minute.[7] It is written in the key of B minor and Lee’s vocal range for the song runs from the musical note of E3 to D♯5.[7] Containing some nu-metal influences,[8] the song features several guitars and drum machine as Lee sings the lines “fifty thousand tears I’ve cried”.[9] A writer for The Boston Globe said that the song is a “a mix of Lee’s ethereal soprano, piano interludes, and layers of serrated guitar crunch that conjure visions of Sarah McLachlan fronting Godsmack.”[10]

Mikel Toombs of Seattle Post-Intelligencer found a Wagnerian arrangement and metal and classic rock influences in the song.[11] Joe D’Angelo from MTV News wrote that the “toothy riffs” of songs like “Going Under” and “Bring Me to Life” might suggest that “Nobody’s Home” (2005) from Avril Lavigne‘s second studio album Under My Skin will sound like “an Evanescence song with Avril, not Amy Lee, on vocals.”[12] It was also described as a “goth-meets pop” song by Michael D. Clark of The Houston Chronicle.[13] Tim Sendra of Allmusic said that the “tinkling pianos and hip-hop-inspired backing vocals, [are] making the song perfect for those who find the male histrionics of Limp Bizkit and their ilk too oppressive.”[1] Vik Bansal of MusicOMH compared the song with Evanescence’s previous single, “Bring Me to Life” saying that it contained “Amy Lee’s temptress vocals, pseudo-electronic beats à la Linkin Park, understated but menacing metallic riffs in the background, and a ripping, radio-friendly rock chorus.”[14]

Reception

Tim Sendra of Allmusic called the song “one of the harder tracks” on Fallen.[1] Sendra also praised the acoustic version of the song placed on UK single saying that Lee’s vocals are “free rein to soar.”[1] Johnny Loftus of the same publication wrote that the song “surges nicely into its anthemic chorus, and when the guitars do show up (like on ‘Everybody’s Fool‘), Lee matches their power easily.”[15] While reviewing Evanescence’s second studio album, The Open Door, Brendan Butler of Cinema Blend compared the song with “Sweet Sacrifice” (2007) calling it the most “radio-friendly” song.[16] Joe D’Angelo of MTV News wrote that the song “should be as omnipresent as ‘Bring Me to Life“.[17] Vik Bansal of MusicOMH praised the song stating that the band “have poured bits of metal and goth into the cauldron, and by using a smattering of pop, produced a mix that makes those two musical genres more palatable to the general public.”[14] It was nominated for the Kerrang! Award for Best Single.

Although “Going Under” failed to chart on the Billboard Hot 100, it peaked at number 4 and 5 on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles[18] and on the Alternative Songs chart respectively.[19] The song debuted at number 14 on the Australian Singles Chart on August 31, 2003 which later became the song’s peak position on that chart.[20] It was certified Gold by the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) in 2003.[2] In Italy, “Going Under” debuted at number 16 on October 16, 2003 and it later peaked at number 9 on January 1, 2004.[21] On the year-end chart in the same country, “Going Under” was placed at number 56.[22] In the United Kingdom, the song debuted at number 8 on October 4, 2011 which later became its peak position.[23] On November 8, the song charted at number 53 and it fell out of the chart the next week.[23]

Music video

The accompanying music video for “Going Under” was filmed in Berlin, Germany, in May 2003 and was directed by Philipp Stölzl, the same director of the video for “Bring Me to Life”.[5] The video features the band performing a concert as the audience morphs back and forth into zombies. Additional scenes involve Lee underwater, representing the lyrics “Drowning in you”. The video shows Lee designed both of the dresses she wears in the music video, and stitched the white dress used in the underwater scenes of the video, all while recovering from an illness in a hotel in Los Angeles, California which was the original filming location for the music video.[5] She described the white dress during an interview with MTV News, “It’s white and has a lot of shreds. It reminds me of something someone who died would wear. It’s a long dress, ripped up. Different shreds of different fabric, just flying around underwater.”[5] The red corset that Lee designed was custom made by a designer, and cost US$2,500.[24] Lee further explained the fashion and her style in the video, “I wear lots of funky stuff onstage. I like to mix it up. I like to use two basic elements for my clothing: rock — you know, metal and chains and stuff — mixed with fairies and drama and Victorian clothing — fantasy. Honestly I just wear what I like. You know why? ‘Cause I can. I’m a rock star.”[5]

The video for the song starts with Lee in a room while preparing for a concert. Several makeup artists apply cosmetics to her face. Their faces begin to change and become distorted. Meanwhile, guitarist Ben Moody is shown being overwhelmed by several reporters and photographers in a press conference. He, like Lee, becomes shocked as they change with zombies-like faces. Those scenes are followed by Lee walking to the stage where the band starts performing the song. As Lee looks at the people in the crowd, they transform back and forth into demonic-like zombies. However, she continues singing the song and during the bridge of the song, she dives into the crowd, which appears to act as water (representing the song’s lyrics “going under, drowning in you”). Several shots show her under the water as glowing jellyfish are surrounding her. Moody surfs the crowd during his guitar solo, while from below he is seen floating in the water above Lee and the jellyfish. Lee surfaces at the end of Moody’s solo and both are thrown back onto the stage by the crowd, which has now returned to normal. At the end of the video, Lee looks at Moody. When she looks again, he has turned into a demon.[25]

The music video ranked at number 12 on the list of “The 15 Scariest Music Videos Ever” published by Billboard.[25] It was added that “Evanescence compares the trappings of fame to being haunted by ghouls in this clip for the band’s 2003 single. Singer Amy Lee’s makeup is applied by a gaggle of sinister old women, while the crowd at the band’s show morphs into a ravenous pack of zombies. Lee eventually overcomes the visions — only to find that guitarist Ben Moody is a demon as well.”[25] According to Joe D’Angelo of MTV News, the shots of Lee drowning in the video, shows a “distressed and emotionally wrought heroine.”[26]

Live performances and covers

Evanescence performed the song during the 2003 American Music Awards. During the performance, Lee was dressed in a colorful poodle skirt, tank top and flower-shaped tattoos on her forehead and neck.[27] Evanescence performed the song during the 2003 Teen Choice Awards.[28] On the 2006 Jingle Ball, Evanescence performed “Going Under” and “Call Me When You’re Sober“. Before starting to sing the song Lee announced, “We’re going to do something completely different from everyone else tonight — and rock as hard as we can.” According to Kelefa Sanneh during the performance, she was “bending over and pumping her fist”.[29] The band played the song live at their secret New York gig which took place on November 4, 2009.[30][31] On their concert at War Memorial Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee, on August 17, 2011, Evanescence performed “Going Under” in promotion of their new third self-titled album, Evanescence.[32] They also performed the song during the 2011 Rock in Rio festival on October 2, 2011.[33] On October 15, 2011, Evanescence performed the song on Jimmy Kimmel Live!.[34] A live version of the song from Le Zénith, Paris is featured on their first live album, Anywhere but Home (2004).[15][35] American rock band We Are the Fallen, which is composed mostly of the original line-up that recorded the song as Evanescence, covered the song live in June 2009 during a concert in Los Angeles.[36][37]

Usage in media

The music of “Going Under” can be heard in the credits of the video game Enter the Matrix[38] and also features in the movie and trailer of the 2006 film Tristan & Isolde. The song was also used in promotional advertisements for the television series Angel and The Grid. This song was also released as downloadable content for Rock Band Network.[39]
