Open letter to President Obama (Part 428) More guns lead to less crime?

(Emailed to White House on 1-31-13.)

President Obama c/o The White House

Dear Mr. President,

I know that you receive 20,000 letters a day and that you actually read 10 of them every day. I really do respect you for trying to get a pulse on what is going on out here.

After reading this article below I learned  anti-gun laws facilitated the terrorist attack at Fort Hood and gun control made Jamaica a more dangerous country. It is a very fine article and I really enjoyed it.

Only the Media Is Baffled by the Notion that More Guns Lead to Less Crime

November 27, 2012 by Dan Mitchell

I don’t like to spend much time commenting on media bias. But every so often I find an example that cries out for attention.

In previous posts, I’ve discussed this slanted AP story on poverty, the Brian Ross Tea Party slur, this example of implicit bias by USA Today, and a Reuters report on job creation and so-called stimulus.

And I’ve also commented on a Washington Post story that turned a spending cut molehill into a “spending slash” mountain, a silly assertion in the New York Times that education spending has been reduced, and a Washington post claim that Germany is fiscally conservative.

The latest example comes from the Associated Press, which is mystified that crime is falling “despite” record firearm sales.

Gun-related violence has fallen steadily since 2006 in Virginia despite record firearm sales, according to a university professor’s analysis. Virginia Commonwealth University professor Thomas R. Baker compared state crime data from 2006 through 2011 with gun-dealer sales estimates obtained by the Richmond Times-Dispatch. Baker’s analysis shows the number of gun purchases soared 73 percent in the six-year period, while gun-related violent crimes fell 24 percent. Baker, who specializes in research methods and criminology theory, said the comparison seems to contradict the premise that more guns lead to more crime in Virginia.

Gee, there are more innocent people with guns and people are surprised that criminals are now more reluctant to commit crimes? I guess you have to be a reporter or an academic to be surprised by this common-sense observation.

John Lott, of course, wrote an entire book called More Guns, Less Crime. It’s very much worth reading. These posts will give you a flavor of his analysis:

Shifting back to the topic of media bias, let’s close this post by sharing some amusing cartoons, which can be enjoyed here, here, and here.

Cartoons from Dan Mitchell’s blog that demonstrate what Obama is doing to our economy

I have put up lots of cartoons from Dan Mitchell’s blog before and they have got lots of hits before. Many of them have dealt with the economy, eternal unemployment benefits, socialism,  Greece,  welfare state or on gun control.

I praised Michael Ramirez a few days ago for his clever political cartoons, so it’s time to “spread the wealth” and draw attention to a couple of superb cartoons by Chuck Asay (I think his hometown paper is the Colorado Springs Gazette).

Since I’ve bashed the biased and inaccurate work of the Congressional Budget Office, I found this cartoon very amusing.

And this cartoon on business taxation is very appropriate after yesterday’s post about a potential corporate tax rate reduction from the Obama Administration.

Open letter to President Obama (Part 427) Remembering Koop part 3 editorial picture

(Emailed to White House on 3-4-13.)

President Obama c/o The White House

Washington, DC 20500

Dear Mr. President,

I know that you receive 20,000 letters a day and that you actually read 10 of them every day. I really do respect you for trying to get a pulse on what is going on out here.

I wanted to share with you some about my pro-life perspective.

MemFormer Surgeon General C.Everett Koop © A Genuine G-Shot.wmv

orial Tribute ________________

Dr. Koop with Hillary Clinton

In 1980 I really was influenced at my highschool by a teacher of mine named Mark Brink. He introduced me to the film series “Whatever happened to the human race?” by Francis Schaeffer and Dr. C. Everett Koop.

In this  film series that came out in 1979 they dealt with the big social issues and predicted what social problems we have in the future because of humanism. For instance, they knew that the Jack Kevorkians of the world would be coming down the pike. They predicted that there was a slippery slope from abortion to infanticide to youth euthanasia brought on by the materialistic worldview.

Later in the summer of 1980 I saw the film series “Free to Choose” by Milton Friedman and I read his book “Free to Choose” over and over during the years that followed. That same year I worked in Ronald Reagan’s campaign as a volunteer.

Sadly all of those political and religious heroes of mine have now passed away. Francis Schaeffer at age 72 in 1984, Ronald Reagan at age 93 in 2004, Milton Friedman at age 94 in 2006 and now Dr. C. Everett Koop at age 96 on Feb 25, 2013.

I still stay in touch with my former teacher Mark Brink and enjoy corresponding with him. He introduced me to the film series “Whatever happened to the human race?” that truly was an amazing look at the social issues that we would be facing in the coming years in the USA.

I found three more editorial cartoons of Dr. C. Everett Koop from the 1980’s. He also did some work with the Clinton Administration in the 1990’s on several issues. I had forgotten about that.

On 2-25-13 we lost a great man when we lost Dr. C. Everett Koop. I have written over and over the last few years quoting Dr. C. Everett Koop and his good friend Francis Schaeffer. They both came together for the first time in 1973 when Dr. Koop operated on Schaeffer’s daughter and as a result they became close friends. That led to their involvement together in the book and film series “WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE HUMAN RACE?” in 1979.

In the film series “WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE HUMAN RACE?” the arguments are presented  against abortion (Episode 1),  infanticide (Episode 2),   euthenasia (Episode 3), and then there is a discussion of the Christian versus Humanist worldview concerning the issue of “the basis for human dignity” in Episode 4 and then in the last episode a close look at the truth claims of the Bible.

We’re Not Finished

Abortion is not simply one item on our social agenda.
Stan Guthrie
[ posted 5/20/2008 9:29AM ]

Ever since C. Everett Koop and Francis Schaeffer pricked our consciences, abortion has been on the front burner for socially minded evangelicals. Thirty-five years since Roe v. Wade, it’s time to ask whether it should remain the sine qua non of Christian social engagement.

Claiming to represent the new center, an increasingly self-confident wing of sincere evangelicals thinks not. “The evangelical social agenda is now much broader and deeper,” asserts Jim Wallis in his new book, The Great Awakening, “engaging issues such as poverty and economic justice, global warming, hiv/aids, sex trafficking, genocide in Darfur, and the ethics of the war in Iraq.”

In The Scandal of Evangelical Politics, Ron Sider, echoing a common complaint that pro-lifers believe that “life begins at conception and ends at birth,” says starvation and second-hand smoke are also “sanctity of life” issues.

In other words, these and other voices seem to be saying that fighting legalized abortion—the deliberate, state- sanctioned taking of 50 million unborn human lives from their mothers’ wombs since 1973 (and the accompanying national guilt)—should simply be one item among many on an ever-expanding evangelical to-do list. I agree that we have multiple responsibilities as Christians, and different callings. But if everything is a priority, then nothing is. While no one is saying that defending unborn human life is optional, the way we sometimes talk about our broader agenda appears to minimize the importance of abortion.

If everything is a priority, then nothing is.

Imagine an adviser telling Martin Luther King Jr. that he won’t be participating in the march from Selma to Montgomery because there is a broader social agenda. Rightly might King retort, “But we’re not finished!”

Despite all our other good and necessary deeds during the ’60s, we evangelicals faced scathing criticism for being largely awol on civil rights, the premier social issue of the era. What will future generations say if we neglect the preeminent moral issue of our day? We cannot excuse ourselves by saying, “Well, protecting unborn human life is someone else’s calling, but [fill in the blank] is my calling.” We are all called to fight abortion.

“God wants to save these children,” Ohio Congressman Tony Hall says in Michael Lindsay’s Faith in the Halls of Power. “He doesn’t want these children killed.” Jesus never turned his back on children. Will we?

And faltering now would be doubly tragic, because the tide is turning. According to the pro-choice Guttmacher Institute, the abortion rate has dropped to its lowest level since 1974. The number has also fallen, from 1.6 million abortions in 1990 to 1.2 million in 2005. While that’s still far too many, and the prospect of actually overturning Roe seems distant, it’s real progress nevertheless.

For example, Americans United for Life notes that over a 14-year period, Mississippi passed 15 pro-life laws, such as the Abortion Complication Reporting Act. As a result, the number of abortions has declined by 60 percent, and six of seven abortion clinics in the state have closed.

Thanks to pregnancy care centers, ramped up adoption efforts, increased access to ultrasounds, and the judicious use of pro-life arguments (such as those in Francis Beckwith’s book Defending Life), we are also winning hearts and minds. The Pew Research Center reports that 18- to 29-year-olds (many of whom consider themselves abortion survivors) consistently favor tougher abortion restrictions than do those 30 and older. In 2003 Gallup found that 32 percent of teens surveyed said abortion should be illegal in all cases—compared with 17 percent of adults. Even Hollywood appears to be sympathetic to pro-life concerns (ct, February, page 34).

Yes, some pro-lifers have besmirched the cause by the use of violence, brass-knuckle political tactics, or hateful rhetoric. And yes, a majority of Americans favors keeping abortion legal in some circumstances. But Carrie Gordon Earll of Focus on the Family notes that most would make abortion illegal except in cases of rape, incest, or threat to the life of the mother. “That’s a far cry from what we have today,” Earll says, “and an encouraging sign that this nation can move back to a place where abortion is no longer legal or thinkable.”

It’s hard to find anyone who is “pro-abortion” these days. Hillary Clinton calls abortion a “sad, even tragic choice.” Barack Obama opposed banning partial-birth abortion, which the Supreme Court restricted last year. But even Obama told this magazine, “I don’t know anybody who is pro-abortion.”

No, we will not all be called to picket or pray in front of an abortion clinic or pass legislation or support an unwed mother or adopt a child or write letters to the editor. But we all can do something.

Opposing abortion is not simply another agenda item for evangelicals. It is our sacred duty. Whatever other good deeds we are called to do—and there are many—we cannot say abortion is someone else’s business. It’s our business.

Actually, I’m not sure this is humorous. Whether we’re looking at ethanol, Solyndra, or other green-energy scams that promote corruption and undermine the economy, this is not a laughing matter.

After all, we’re the taxpayers and consumers who are pushing this turkey up the hill.

And if you like humor about energy policy, check out these three cartoons.

Open letter to President Obama (Part 425) Taking on Ark Times Bloggers on various issues Part B “Gendercide” (Francis Schaeffer Quotes Part 2 includes the film ABORTION OF THE HUMAN RACE) (editorial cartoon)

(Emailed to White House on 3-4-13.)

President Obama c/o The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW
Washington, DC 20500

Dear Mr. President,

I know that you receive 20,000 letters a day and that you actually read 10 of them every day. I really do respect you for trying to get a pulse on what is going on out here.

I wanted to share with you some about my pro-life perspective.

I have gone back and forth and back and forth with many liberals on the Arkansas Times Blog on many issues such as abortion, human rights, welfare, poverty, gun control  and issues dealing with popular culture. Here is another exchange I had with them a while back. My username at the Ark Times Blog is Saline Republican.

On 2-19-13 the liberal blogger “DeathbyInches asserted on the Ark Times Blog,

Used to when I’d see David Sanders on my TV it would usually cause my bowels to move right after that.

And would a young girl be looking for an oil change if she was sitting in an abortion clinic? I’ll have to ask the many women I know if when they were younger and went to LR or Fayetteville for an abortion…did they find the doctor on his knees begging them to go for it because his babies needed new shoes.

When, unless the mother isn’t able or the fetus has a major defect…..what other times does a doctor look at a woman and “advise” she better ditch that fetus before the sun goes down….little Missy! I smell a cooked up story….sniff sniff….yep…cooked up, sure smells like it.

On 2-19-13 I responded on the Ark Times Blog,

DBI,you are wrong about young pregnant girls not being encouraged to have abortions for small things. Gendercide is actually happening a lot today. DO YOU FAVOR GENDERCIDE ? Here is a video of this happening in Texas. https://thedailyhatch.org/2012/06/11/why-wo…

Over 100 millions girls are missing today. These girls were victims of gendercide. The war on baby girls begins in the womb. Here is an article below about the case in Texas.

AUSTIN, May 29 — Today, Live Action released a new undercover video showing a Planned Parenthood abortion clinic in Austin, TX encouraging a woman to obtain a late-term abortion because she was purportedly carrying a girl and wanted to have a boy. The video is first in a new series titled “Gendercide: Sex-Selection in America,” exposing the practice of sex-selective abortion in the United States and how Planned Parenthood and the rest of the abortion industry facilitate the selective elimination of baby girls in the womb.

“I see that you’re saying that you want to terminate if it’s a girl, so are you just wanting to continue the pregnancy in the meantime?” a counselor named “Rebecca” offers the woman, who is purportedly still in her first trimester and cannot be certain about the gender. “The abortion covers you up until 23 weeks,” explains Rebecca, “and usually at 5 months is usually (sic) when they detect, you know, whether or not it’s a boy or a girl.” Doctors agree that the later in term a doctor performs an abortion, the greater the risk of complications.

The Planned Parenthood staffer suggests that the woman get on Medicaid in order to pay for an ultrasound to determine the gender of her baby, even though she plans to use the knowledge for an elective abortion. She also tells the woman to “just continue and try again” for the desired gender after aborting a girl, and adds, “Good luck, and I hope that you do get your boy.”

“The search-and-destroy targeting of baby girls through prenatal testing and abortion is a pandemic that is spreading across the globe,” notes Lila Rose, founder and president of Live Action. “Research proves that sex-selective abortion has now come to America. The abortion industry, led by Planned Parenthood, is a willing participant.”

Six studies in the past four years indicate that there are thousands of “missing girls” in the U.S., many from sex-selective abortion. The U.K., India, Australia, and other countries ban sex-selective abortion, but the U.S., save for three states, does not. On Wednesday, Congress will debate the Prenatal Non-Discrimination Act (PRENDA), which would ban sex-selective abortions nationally.

“Planned Parenthood and their ruthless abortion-first mentality is the real ‘war on women’,” says Rose. “Sex-selective abortion is gender discrimination with lethal consequences for little girls.”

The complete, unedited video and transcript can be viewed at http://www.ProtectOurGirls.com, a hub of research and information on sex-selective abortions.

Live Action is a youth led movement dedicated to building a culture of life and ending the human rights abuse of abortion. They use new media to educate the public about the humanity of the unborn and investigative journalism to expose threats against the vulnerable and defenseless.

Dr. Francis Schaeffer – The Biblical Flow of Truth & History (part 2)

Francis Schaeffer saw the issues that our society would be facing in the future because of humanism and he was right on just about everything. Take a look at some of his quotes below: (By the way one of my favorite quotes is the first one listed below.)

“We must realize that the Reformation world view leads in the direction of government freedom. But the humanist world view with inevitable certainty leads in the direction of statism. This is so because humanists, having no god, must put something at the center, and it is inevitably society, government, or the state.”
Francis A. Schaeffer
“The Christian in the one whose imagination should fly beyond the stars.”
Francis A. Schaeffer, Art & the Bible
“Biblical orthodoxy without compassion is surely the ugliest thing in the world.”
Francis A. Schaeffer
“The Bible is clear here: I am to love my neighbor as myself, in the manner needed, in a practical way, in the midst of the fallen world, at my particular point of history. This is why I am not a pacifist. Pacifism in this poor world in which we live — this lost world — means that we desert the people who need our greatest help.”
Francis A. Schaeffer
“To fail to exhibit that we take truth seriously at those points where there is a cost in our doing so, is to push the next generation in the relative, dialectical millstream that surrounds us. ”
Francis A. Schaeffer
“A Christian should use these arts to the glory of God, not just as tracts, mind you, but as things of beauty to the praise of God. An art work can be a doxology in itself.”
Francis A. Schaeffer, Art & the Bible
“The tree in the field is to be treated with respect. It is not to be romanticized as the old lady romanticizes her cat (that is, she reads human reactions into it). . . . But while we should not romanticize the tree, we must realize that God made it and it deserves respect because he made it as a tree. Christians who do not believe in the complete evolutionary scale have reason to respect nature as the total evolutionist never can, because we believe that God made these things specifically in their own areas. So if we are going to argue against evolutionists intellectually, we should show the results of our beliefs in our attitudes. The Christian is a man who has a reason for dealing with each created thing on a high level of respect.”
Francis A. Schaeffer, Pollution & the Death of Man
“The basic problem of the Christians in this country in the last eighty years or so, in regard to society and in regard to government, is that they have seen things in bits and pieces instead of totals.”
Francis A. Schaeffer, A Christian Manifesto
“A compassionate open home is part of Christian responsibility, and should be practiced up to the level of capacity.”
Francis A. Schaeffer
“The ancients were afraid that if they went to the end of the earth they would fall off and be consumed by dragons. But once we understand that Christianity is true to what is there, true to the ultimate environment – the infinite, personal God who is really there – then our minds are freed. We can pursue any question and can be sure that we will not fall off the end of the earth.”
Francis A. Schaeffer, Art & the Bible
“How should an artist begin to do his work as an artist? I would insist that he begin his work as an artist by setting out to make a work of art.”
Francis A. Schaeffer, Art & the Bible
“In face of this modern nihilism, Christians are often lacking in courage. We tend to give the impression that we will hold on to the outward forms whatever happens, even if God really is not there. But the opposite ought to be true of us, so that people can see that we demand the truth of what is there and that we are not dealing merely with platitudes. In other words, it should be understood that we take this question of truth and personality so seriously that if God were not there we would be among the first of those who had the courage to step out of the queue.”
Francis A. Schaeffer
“‎People have presuppositions… By ‘presuppositions’ we mean the basic way that an individual looks at life- his worldview. The grid through which he sees the world. Presuppositions rest upon that which a person considers to be the truth of what exists. A person’s presuppositions provide the basis for their values- and therefore the basis for their decisions.”
Francis A. Schaeffer
“Most people catch their presuppositions from their family and surrounding society, the way that a child catches the measles. But people with understanding realize that their presuppositions should be *chosen* after a careful consideration of which worldview is true.”
Francis A. Schaeffer, How Should We Then Live? The Rise and Decline of Western Thought and Culture

Thank you so much for your time. I know how valuable it is. I also appreciate the fine family that you have and your commitment as a father and a husband.

Sincerely,

Everette Hatcher III, 13900 Cottontail Lane, Alexander, AR 72002, ph 501-920-5733, lowcostsqueegees@yahoo.com

Debating the Founding Fathers with Ark Times Bloggers Part 6 Our founding fathers did believe in rewards and punishments in the next life for what we do in this life!!!!!!

I have gone back and forth and back and forth with many liberals on the Arkansas Times Blog on many issues such as abortionhuman rightswelfarepovertygun control  and issues dealing with popular culture , but the issue of the founding fathers’ views on religion got one of the biggest responses.

It is true that 29 of the signers of the Declaration of Independence had degrees with Bible Colleges or Seminaries and these men we know were God-fearing Protestants. This means they had a biblical view of man with an understanding of our sin nature and this led them to come up with a limited government with many checks and balances. They had a strong belief in the afterlife and in future punishments and rewards. They also encouraged Christianity and were not hostile to religion. However, they did not set up a Christian Theocracy but wanted freedom of religion.

People really are losing their faith in big government and they want more liberty back. It seems to me we have to get back to the founding  principles that made our country great.  We also need to realize that a big government will encourage waste and corruptionThe recent scandals in our government have proved my point. In fact, the jokes President Obama made at Ohio State about possibly auditing them are not so funny now that reality shows how the IRS was acting more like a monster out of control.  Here is a clip discussing the founders and what their religious views were.

David Barton: Declaration and Constitution Are Based Entirely On The Bible

Here is some comments from our debate on the Arkansas Times Blog in July of 2013:

Outlier, you have your humorous moments, I have to give you that and I enjoyed the rap song and the irony of feeling sorry for the pimp who has the hard job of making his rent. It reminded me of the Will Ferrell pimp story he told about in the movie THE OTHER GUYS. Here is the clip:

Morality from religion is necessary for a government such as the founders set up in the USA. Don’t take my word for it but look at some of these comments from George Washington.

In the advertisement from the Freedom from Religion Foundation you have a quote from George Washington but these quotes below were omitted:

“While just government protects all in their religious rights, true religion affords to government its surest support.”

(Source: George Washington, The Writings of George Washington, John C. Fitzpatrick, editor (Washington, D.C.: U.S. Government Printing Office, 1932), Vol. XXX, p. 432 n., from his address to the Synod of the Dutch Reformed Church in North America, October 9, 1789.)

“Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports. In vain would that man claim the tribute of patriotism who should labor to subvert these great pillars of human happiness, these firmest props of the duties of man and citizens. The mere politician, equally with the pious man, ought to respect and to cherish them. A volume could not trace all their connexions with private and public felicity. Let it simply be asked, Where is the security for property, for reputation, for life, if the sense of religious obligation desert the oaths, which are the instruments of investigation in Courts of Justice? And let us with caution indulge the supposition that morality can be maintained without religion. Whatever may be conceded to the influence of refined education on minds of peculiar structure, reason and experience both forbid us to expect that national morality can prevail in exclusion of religious principle. It is substantially true, that virtue or morality is a necessary spring of popular government. The rule, indeed, extends with more or less force to every species of free government. Who, that is a sincere friend to it, can look with indifference upon attempts to shake the foundation of the fabric?”

(Source: George Washington, Address of George Washington, President of the United States . . . Preparatory to His Declination (Baltimore: George and Henry S. Keatinge), pp. 22-23. In his Farewell Address to the United States in 1796.)

“[T]he [federal] government . . . can never be in danger of degenerating into a monarchy, and oligarchy, an aristocracy, or any other despotic or oppressive form so long as there shall remain any virtue in the body of the people.”

(Source: George Washington, The Writings of George Washington, John C. Fitzpatrick, editor (Washington: U. S. Government Printing Office, 1939), Vol. XXIX, p. 410. In a letter to Marquis De Lafayette, February 7, 1788.)

OUTLIER, ON WHAT BASIS DO YOU SAY THAT MURDER IS WRONG? The founding fathers made it clear that our rights to life and liberty came to us from the lawgiver which was the God that revealed himself in the Bible. If you took the time to read George Washington’s Farewell Speech (which I quoted from above) then you will see that this is true.

Here is an outline of some of points he made in that speech, by the way when he said “religion” in this speech he was talking about Christianity.

Religion and Morality…
Are “indispensable supports” for “political prosperity.”
Are the “firmest props of the duties of Men and Country.”

The oaths in our courts would be useless without “the sense of religious obligation.”

“And let us with caution indulge the supposition, that morality can be maintained without religion.”

“Reason and experience both forbid us to expect, that national morality can prevail in exclusion of religious principle.”

“Promote, then, as an object of primary importance, institutions for the general diffusion of knowledge.”

THIS BRINGS ME TO WHAT “CITIZEN1” DISMISSED AS “RICHES IN THE NEXT LIFE.”

Our founding fathers did believe in rewards and punishments in the next life for what we do in this life!!!!!!

Open letter to President Obama (Part 424) John Stossel notes how good intentions lead to bad results when the government is involved

(Emailed to White House on 1-30-13.)

President Obama c/o The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW
Washington, DC 20500

Dear Mr. President,

I know that you receive 20,000 letters a day and that you actually read 10 of them every day. I really do respect you for trying to get a pulse on what is going on out here.

John Stossel notes how good intentions lead to bad results when the government is involved. Why do we keep on giving the government more money when they waste so much? We should be putting more time in staying out of the small businessperson’s way!!!!

Since I’m an out-of-the-closet libertarian, it goes without saying that I’m not favorably disposed to government intervention. As far as I’m concerned, Washington’s an inherently corrupt town filled with people seeking unearned wealth.

But even if I didn’t have any underlying philosophical or moral principles, I think I would still favor small government.

Why? Because just about everything government does turns into a bloody cluster-you-know-what, so there’s also a utilitarian case for libertarianism.

I discuss the reverse Midas touch of government with John Stossel.

The theme of Stossel’s show, by the way, was looking at how good intentions lead to bad results. I actually think that’s too optimistic.

Most government intervention is driven by sordid insider scheming, not good intentions. The politicians merely pretend they have noble-sounding goals when peddling their manure to the public.

But regardless of the goals, the result is still the same.

I point out that if the burden of government spending grows faster than the private economy (sort of Obama’s Golden Rule rather than Mitchell’s Golden Rule), bad things inevitably will happen.

Other points from the interview:

I suppose a more interesting program would be to identify things that the government does intelligently and effectively.

Any suggestions?

P.S. According to Greek mythology, anything Midas touched turned into gold. But since the fable also says that this blessing turned into a curse, perhaps this post should have been titled the “The Midas Touch of Government” rather than “The Reverse Midas Touch of Government.” But since I’m already trying to restore the good name of Robin Hood, I’m going to leave it to others to decide how to characterize Midas.

Cartoons from Dan Mitchell’s blog that demonstrate what Obama is doing to our economy (What Happens When Looters and Moochers Outnumber Workers and Producers?)

I have put up lots of cartoons from Dan Mitchell’s blog before and they have got lots of hits before. Many of them have dealt with the economy, eternal unemployment benefits, socialism,  Greece,  welfare state or on gun control.

I thought it was great when the Republican Congress and Bill Clinton put in welfare reform but now that has been done away with and no one has to work anymore it seems. In fact, over 40% of the USA is now on the government dole. What is going to happen when that figure gets over 50%? Maybe this cartoon below will be true.

The all-time, most-viewed post on this blog is this set of cartoons showing how the welfare state begins and how it eventually becomes an unsustainable mess.

The great Chuck Asay has a cartoon that takes the next step, showing what happens when the looters and moochers who ride in the wagon get pitted against those who are pulling the wagon.

Since I’m not a Romney fan (for a bunch of reasons outlined here), I would have preferred if the cartoon didn’t imply anything about the current election and instead focused on the rhetorical question of what happens to a society when those living off the government outnumber those who get stuck picking up the tab.

It also would have been more accurate to have the two slave drivers somehow identified as “politicians” and the “IRS.”

But it’s a very clever cartoon, so it’s worth sharing even if I’m nitpicking.

You can see my favorite Asay cartoons here, here, herehere, here, here, here, here, here, here, herehereherehere, and here.

Cartoons from Dan Mitchell’s blog that demonstrate what Obama is doing to our economy (“You didn’t build that”)

I have put up lots of cartoons from Dan Mitchell’s blog before and they have got lots of hits before. Many of them have dealt with the economy, eternal unemployment benefits, socialism,  Greece,  welfare state or on gun control.

When I think of President Obama’s “you didn’t build that” comment it makes me think of this cartoon below. Sure enough he got around to raising taxes in 2013 soon enough.

What motivates folks on the left? For some, it’s a simple matter of self interest. They belong to a group that benefits from favoritism or redistribution. Or, as Mark Steyn has explained, they want to create dependency for short-run political self interest.

For others, it’s probably a go-along-to-get-along strategy. If you work in Hollywood, your life is easier if you adopt the dominant belief system, even if you privately think it doesn’t make sense.

And don’t forget the folks on the left who assume that wealth is the result of some sort of scam (often because the rich people they know “earned” their money in less-then-impressive ways).

But what about ordinary leftists? Why do they support statist policies. My own personal guess is that they think good intentions make them good people, and they naively assume that spending other people’s money is a way of solving problems (which is the most charitable interpretation of FDR’s policies).

This Chuck Asay cartoon expresses this mindset.

You can enjoy other Asay cartoons here, herehereherehere, and here.

Open letter to President Obama (Part 423) Remembering Koop part 2 editorial picture

Dr. C. Everett Koop on Baby Doe, euthanasia, abortion

Uploaded on Nov 3, 2008

Dr. Koop answers questions on Baby Doe, euthanasia and abortion during interview at Wheaton College, Wheaton, IL http://www.christianethics.org

Dr. Koop

In this 1979 film series they dealt with the big social issues and predicted what social problems we have in the future because of humanism. For instance, they knew that the Jack Kevorkians of the world would be coming down the pike. They predicted that there was a slippery slope from abortion to infanticide to youth euthanasia brought on by the materialistic worldview.

AUL calls Dr. C. Everett Koop “A Pro-life Giant and Pioneer,” and says former board member will be greatly missed
By Americans United for Life
Tuesday, February 26th, 2013

WASHINGTON, D.C. (02-26-13) Americans United for Life President and CEO Dr. Charmaine Yoest paid tribute to AUL’s former board member Dr. C. Everett Koop who passed away this week, saying he was “a pro-life giant. He saw the issues of abortion and infanticide for what they were, assaults on the civil rights of the most vulnerable of human beings.”

Dr. Yoest made the following statement: “C. Everett Koop, M.D., was a pro-life pioneer in every possible sense of the term.  While most publicly known for his service as Surgeon General of the United States under President Ronald Reagan, Dr. Koop’s most enduring legacy is that which he carved in 35 years of practice as the foremost pediatric surgeon in the country, if not the world.  He was among the founders of the medical specialty of general pediatric surgery, launched the Journal of Pediatric Surgery as its first editor, and in 1956 established, at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), the first neonatal surgical intensive care unit in the nation.

“Dr. Koop joined the Board of Directors of Americans United for Life in the mid-1970s.  He published The Right to Live, The Right to Die, in 1976, setting forth his principled beliefs against abortion, infanticide, and medical neglect of handicapped newborns. He took leave from his medical practice to co-produce, with Francis Schaeffer, the groundbreaking film and book, Whatever Happened to the Human Race?

“Importantly, Dr. Koop’s leadership was pivotal in turning the tide against the medical neglect of handicapped newborns.  He keynoted the 1981 AUL conference, Infanticide and the Handicapped Newborn. As Surgeon General, he supported development and implementation of the ‘Baby Doe’regulations, promulgated after the much-publicized death of ‘Baby Doe’ in Bloomington, Indiana – an infant born with Downs syndrome whose parents refused to treat correctable esophageal atresia with surgery, ultimately leading to the baby’s needless death. It was no coincidence that Dr. Koop also pioneered the techniques to correct such disorders. Thanks to these regulations, and the Baby Doe Amendments passed by Congress in 1984, such deliberate and lethal medical neglect is prohibited under Federal civil rights laws.

“Dr. Koop’s name became synonymous with CHOP; his residents at that institution became the leaders of their field at hospitals in the United States and internationally. There, he developed surgical techniques that have saved the lives of countless children who otherwise would have died, or been allowed to die, because of their deformities.  He invented anesthetic and surgical techniques suited to the small bodies of his patients, developed surgical techniques to correct various forms of atresias, and successfully treated extremely complex cases of conjoined twins.

“There is no doubt that Dr. Koop’s leadership in the field of neonatal and pediatric surgery literally saved thousands of lives, and continues to do so today.  His own writings, and his work with Francis Schaeffer, inspired an entire generation of pro-life activists and leaders.  His surgical breakthroughs, coupled with his policy leadership, made possible the civil rights protections enjoyed today by handicapped newborns.

“Tragically, his piercing question, ‘whatever happened to the human race?,’ continues to haunt the conscience of a nation where abortion on demand remains the law of the land, and campaigns for assisted suicide and euthanasia continue. He will be greatly missed.”

Dr. C. Everett Koop is pictured above.

In the film series “WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE HUMAN RACE?” the arguments are presented  against abortion (Episode 1),  infanticide (Episode 2),   euthanasia (Episode 3), and then there is a discussion of the Christian versus Humanist worldview concerning the issue of “the basis for human dignity” in Episode 4 and then in the last episode a close look at the truth claims of the Bible.

“Sanctity of Life Saturday”:Derek Melleby’s review of the book “Francis Schaeffer: An Authentic Life” (includes film THE BASIS FOR HUMAN DIGNITY)

Everett Koop to the position of Surgeon General in his administration. He partnered with Dr. Francis Schaeffer in making […]
