Nat Hentoff is an atheist, but he became a pro-life activist because of the scientific evidence that shows that the unborn child is a distinct and separate human being and even has a separate DNA. His perspective is a very intriguing one that I thought you would be interested in. I have shared before many   cases (Bernard Nathanson, Donald Trump, Paul Greenberg, Kathy Ireland)    when other high profile pro-choice leaders have changed their views and this is just another case like those. I have contacted the White House over and over concerning this issue and have even received responses. I am hopeful that people will stop and look even in a secular way (if they are not believers) at this abortion debate and see that the unborn child is deserving of our protection.That is why the writings of Nat Hentoff of the Cato Institute are so crucial.

Ana Rosa Rodriguez was born in 1991 without a right arm. Actually, she was not supposed to have been born. Her mother, 19-year-old Rosa Rodriguez, a Dominican immigrant, 7 1/2 months pregnant, had gone to Dr. Abu Hayat on New York’s Lower East Side for an abortion. It was botched; Ana Rosa was born the day after. But in the course of the doctor’s attempts to dismember her the day before, Ana Rosa’s right arm had been torn off.

In February of this year, a jury in New York State Supreme Court convicted Dr. Hayat on a number of counts. One was performing an illegal abortion in the third trimester of pregnancy. While 11 states permit abortions during the final three months, New York prohibits it after 24 weeks.

(If the Freedom of Choice Act passes Congress and is signed by the president, this kind of state restriction will probably no longer be allowed anywhere. The bill leaves the definition of viability — when the fetus can survive outside the uterus — to the physician performing the abortion, not to the individual states.)

Dr. Hayat was also convicted of assault on Ana Rosa because of the arm that had been severed at the shoulder. The convictions are being appealed by the doctor’s lawyer, Ronald J. Veneziano. There would appear to be no basis for appeal on the charge of an illegal abortion after 24 weeks. But Dr. Hayat may well get the assault charge overturned.

His attorney’s argument is that, according to Roe v. Wade, a fetus is not a person. And under New York state criminal law, unless a person is assaulted, no crime has been committed. Justice Harry Blackmun, in writing the majority decision in Roe v. Wade, could not have been more clear:

” … the word, ‘person,’ as used in the 14th Amendment, does not include the unborn.”

If, says attorney Veneziano, the majority of the court had held instead that “the fetus was a person, they would have found themselves in the position of sanctioning murder. They can’t have it both ways.”

The New York state appellate courts will almost certainly agree. And should New York appeal to the United States Supreme Court, I doubt that it would agree to review the case, since there is not a majority to declare that fetuses are persons.

Yet, a sonogram of the 7 1/2-month-old fetus on the day of the mishandled abortion would clearly show a viable, developing human being, who — just a day later — did indeed become an actual person under the Constitution. Of course, she had been a member of our species for quite awhile.

If the assault charges are not dismissed, pro-choice organizations might find it somewhat uncomfortable, though necessary, to submit a Supreme Court brief on behalf of Dr. Hayat’s innocence, under Roe v. Wade, of those assault charges. After Dr. Hayat’s arrest, as Richard Perez-Pena reported in the New York Times, “more than 30 women came forward to say he had botched their abortions, often with serious consequences to their health.” And two other assault counts on which the doctor was convicted concerned an incomplete abortion on Marie Moise, a Haitian immigrant. Reported the New York Times: “Mrs. Moise’s husband, David, testified during the trial that the doctor, who had said the price would be $ 300, stopped midway through the procedure and demanded an additional $ 500.” When Mr. Moise said he didn’t have the additional money, “the doctor forced him to leave the office with his bleeding, semiconscious wife.”

I have gone through criminal complaints against many physicians performing abortions, and abortion clinics, in a number of states. Some are harrowing. Abortion -rights groups might spend more resources on pushing for stricter regulations where those are needed and on monitoring clinics and physicians.

As for the doctor, the attention he has received is due in part — as Scott McConnell, who is pro-choice, has noted in the New York Post — to his having pushed “the reality of abortion in front of our eyes … the fact that every fetus is a potential child is one we’d prefer to hide from ourselves.”

A recent medical textbook, “The Unborn Patient: Pre-Natal Diagnosis and Treatment” (W.B. Saunders Co.) begins: “Only now are we beginning to consider … the concept that the fetus is a patient, an individual.”

If the operation had been successful, there would never have been an individual, Ana Rosa Rodriguez, who has learned to pull herself up and drink from a bottle with her remaining hand.

I truly believe that many of the problems we have today in the USA are due to the advancement of humanism in the last few decades in our society. Ronald Reagan appointed the evangelical Dr. C. Everett Koop to the position of Surgeon General in his administration. He partnered with Dr. Francis Schaeffer in making the video below. It is very valuable information for Christians to have.  Actually I have included a video below that includes comments from him on this subject.

“Friedman Friday” FREE TO CHOOSE “Who protects the consumer?” Video and Transcript Part 2 of 7 “When governments do intervene in business, innovation is stifled. Railroads have been regulated for nearly a century and they are one of our most backward industries.”

In 1980 I read the book FREE TO CHOOSE by Milton Friedman and it really enlightened me a tremendous amount.  I suggest checking out these episodes and transcripts of Milton Friedman’s film series FREE TO CHOOSE: “The Failure of Socialism” and “What is wrong with our schools?”  and “Created Equal”  and  From Cradle to Grave, and – Power of the Market.

From the original Free To Choose series Milton asks: “Who Protects the Consumer?”. Many government agencies have been created for this purpose, yet they do so by restricting freedom and stifling beneficial innovation, and eventually become agents for the groups they have been created to regulate.

Milton Friedman noted how the government usually messes up things when they start regulating: “When governments do intervene in business, innovation is stifled. Railroads have been regulated for nearly a century and they are one of our most backward industries.”

When governments do intervene in business, innovation is stifled. Railroads have been regulated for nearly a century and they are one of our most backward industries. The railroad story shows what so often results from the good intentions of consumer protection groups. In the 1860’s railroad rates were lower in the United States than anywhere else in the world. Yet many customers thought they were too high. They complained bitterly about the profits of the railroads.
Now the railway men of the time had their problems too. Problems that arose out of the fierce competitiveness among them. Many railroads all trying to get their share of the market, all trying to make a name for themselves. If you want to see what their problems were as they saw them, come and have a look at this.
From inside this private railroad car it may not look as if the people who ran the railroads had any real problems. Some, like the owner of this private car, had done very well. This was the equivalent of the private jet of today’s business tycoons. But for each one who succeeded, many didn’t survive the cutthroat competition.
What we have here is a railroad map of the United States for the year 1882. It shows every railroad then in existence. The country was literally crisscrossed with railroads going to every remote hamlet and covering the nation from coast to coast. Between points far distant like for example New York and Chicago, there might be a half a dozen lines that would be running between those two points. Each of the half dozen trying to get business would cut rates and rates would get very low. The people who benefited most from this competition were the customers shipping goods on a long trip.
On the other hand, between some segments of that trip, say for example, Harrisburg and Pittsburgh, there might be only a single line that was running and that line would take full advantage of its monopoly position. It would charge all that the traffic would bear. The result was that the sum of the fares charged for the short haul was typically larger than the total sum charged for the long haul between the two distant points. Of course, none of the consumers complained about the low price for the long haul, but the consumer certainly did complain about the higher prices for the short hauls. And that was one of the major sources of agitation leading ultimately to the establishment of the Interstate Commerce Commission.
The cartoonists of the day delighted in pointing out that railroads had tremendous political instinct. As indeed they did. They used the consumer’s complaints to get the government to establish a commission that would protect the railroad’s interest. It took about a decade to get the commission into full operation. By that time, needless to say, the consumer advocates had moved on to their next crusade. But the railway men were still there. They had soon learned how to use the commission to their own advantage. They solved the long haul/short haul problem, by raising the long haul rates. The customers ended up paying more, some protection. The first commissioner was Thomas Cooley, a lawyer who had represented the railroads for many years. The railroads continued to dominate the Commission.
In the 1920’s and 30’s when trucks emerged as serious competitors for long distance hauling, the railroads induced the Commission to extend control over trucking. Truckers, in their turn, learned how to use the Commission to protect themselves from competition. This firm carries freight to and from the Dayton, Ohio International Airport. Its the only one serving some routes and its customers depend on it. But Dayton Airfreight has real problems. Its ICC license only permits it to carry freight from Dayton to Detroit. To serve other routes it’s had to buy rights from other ICC license holders including one who doesn’t own a single truck. It’s paid as much as $100,000 a year for the privilege.
Secretary: Our company is in the process of trying to get rights to go there now. Yes, we’ll do that and thank you for calling sir.
The owners of the firm have been trying for years to get their license extended to cover more routes.
Air freight company: Now I don’t have any argument with the people who already have ICC permits except for the fact that this is a big country and since the inception of the ICC in 1936, there has been very few entrants into the business. They do not allow new entrants to come in and compete with those who are already in.
Unnamed individual: Of course, Dayton Airfreight suffers but so do the customers who pay higher freight charges. Quite frankly, I don’t know why the ICC is sitting on its hands doing nothing. This is the third time to my knowledge that we’ve support the application of Dayton Airfreight to help us save money, help free enterprise, help the country save energy, help, help, help. It all comes down to consumers ultimately going to pay for all of this and they are the blame. The ICC has to be the blame.
Friedman: Dayton Airfreight now has many of its trucks lying idle. Trucks that could be providing a valuable service. Far from protecting consumers, the ICC has ended up making them worse off.
As far as I’m concerned, there is no free enterprise in interstate commerce. It no longer exists in this country. You have to pay the price and you have to pay the price very dearly and I don’t mean we have to pay the price, it means that the consumer is paying that price.
The price consumers pay when it comes to medicine could be their lives. In the 19th Century pharmacies contained an impressive array of pills and potions. Most were ineffective and some were deadly. There was an outcry about drugs that maimed or killed. The Food and Drug Administration in response to consumer pressure succeeded in banning a whole range of medicines. The tonics and lotions with their excessive claims disappeared from the market. In 1962 the Kefauver Amendment gave the FDA power to regulate all drugs for effectiveness as well as for safety. Today, every drug marketed in the United States must pass the FDA. It’s clear that this has protected us from some drugs with horrific side effects like thalidomide. And we all know of people who have benefited from modern drugs. What we don’t hear much about however, are the beneficial drugs that the FDA has prohibited.
Well, if you examine the therapeutic benefits of significant drugs that haven’t arrived in the U.S. but are available somewhere in the rest of the world, such as in Britain, you can come across numerous examples where the patient has suffered. For example, there are one or two drugs called beta blockers which now can prevent death after heart attack, we call it secondary prevention of coronary death after myocardial infarction, which if available here, could be saving about 10,000 lives a year in the United States. In the ten years after the 1962 amendments no drug was approved for hypertension. That’s for the control the blood pressure in the United States, where as several were approve in Britain. In the entire cardiovascular area, only one drug was approved in the five year period from 67 to 72. And this can be correlated with known organizational problems at FDA.
These carts are taking to an FDA official the documents required to get just one drug approved.

Fr. Pavone: Right to choose must yield to right to life

STATEN ISLAND, NY — Father Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, had the following comment on the verdict in the Kermit Gosnell trial:

“The guilty verdict on charges of killing babies following abortion shows that the law recognizes a point at which the ‘right to choose’ must yield to the right to life, and also shows that abortionists don’t know where that point is. Such laws must be strengthened in every state.”

“Gosnell’s guilty verdict in the death of Karnamaya Mongar is different. Gosnell didn’t slit her neck but he did create conditions that caused her death. And Mongar is not the only mother harmed or killed in the hundreds of dangerous, unregulated, legal abortion clinics across our country. There are hundreds of Gosnells and they have to be stopped.

“The lessons to be learned from this case, and the actions that should follow upon it, are largely independent of the verdict rendered today. Janet Morana, executive director of Priests for Life and co-founder of the Silent  No More Awareness Campaign, also commented on Gosnell’s conviction in the death of Karnamaya Mongar:

“On behalf of the many women who have died and the countless numbers of women who have been physically injured in abortion clinics across our nation, and whose abortionists have not been brought to justice, I applaud the jury for recognizing that what happened to Karnamaya Mongar was not an accident.  Justice for Karnamaya provides a measure of justice for all women harmed by abortion. The abortion procedure kills a child, sometimes kills a mother and is always  damaging to women. This product called abortion should be recalled by the government.”

Dr. Alveda King, director of African-American Outreach for Priests for Life, said of the guilty verdicts:

“Justice was served with these verdicts, but injustice will continue unless we end abortion in this country. Gosnell was not the only abortionist who killed newborn babies and their mothers, he was just the one who got caught. Now we have to turn out attention to charging, trying and convicting others like him.”

Father Pavone said Priests for Life continues to pray for Ms. Mongar and her family, for Dr. Gosnell and for all involved in the case.

FREE TO CHOOSE “Who protects the worker?” Video and Transcript Part

In 1980 I read the book FREE TO CHOOSE by Milton Friedman and it really enlightened me a tremendous amount.  I suggest checking out these episodes and transcripts of Milton Friedman’s film series FREE TO CHOOSE: “The Failure of Socialism” and “What is wrong with our schools?”  and “Created Equal”  and  From Cradle to Grave, and – Power of the Market. Milton Friedman shows in this episode how the worker is best protected and it is not by the government!!!!!!!

The essence of what Milton Friedman is saying in this episode is found in this statement:

“The situation of immigration restrictions really has to do with the question of a welfare state. As I say in the film, I would favor completely free immigration in a society which does not have a welfare system. With a welfare system of the kind we have, you have the problem that people immigrate in order to get welfare, not in order to get employment. You know, it’s a very interesting thing, if you would ask anybody before 1914 the U.S. had no immigration restrictions whatsoever, I’m exaggerating a little bit, there were some immigration restrictions on orientals, but it was essentially, mainly free. If you ask anybody, any American economic historian was that a good thing for America, everybody will say yes it was a wonderful thing for America that we had free immigration. If you ask anybody today, should we have free immigration today, everybody will __ almost everybody will say no. What’s the difference? I think there’s only one difference and that is that when we had free immigration it was immigration of jobs in which everybody benefited. The people who were already here benefited because they got complementary workers, workers who could work with them, make their productivity better, enable them to develop and use the resources of the country better, but today, if you have a system under which you have essentially a governmental guarantee of relief in case of distress, you have a very, very real problem.”

L. WILLIAMS: Dr. Friedman and Walter Williams go back in history and they take a look at a situation where America was empty, where we didn’t have anything like the sophisticated industrial economy we have today, but had a much more agricultural and rural kind of economy and of course when the __ when the impoverished peasants of Europe, my ancestors and most of our ancestors, except for the slaves, which is another situation, but when these people came from Europe and came to a wide open continent with the most fertile soil then available to anyone in the world, naturally there was progress; and I or any of us would be mad to deny progress. But as that developed and as population increased and as we moved into a much more sophisticated industrial economy, we moved then into the situation in the 1930s, or earlier than that , at the end of the century. As some of the more skilled jobs came along, the labor movement didn’t happen by accident. Didn’t happen because there wasn’t a need there. The results of this development, even with all the wealth available in America, the results of this development was that many working people were not having anything like, by standards of civilization or whatever, anything like their fair share in this progress.

MCKENZIE: Now you’re arguing that in a free market, for labor, everyone benefits. Does that mean that you would favor abolition of all immigration restrictions?

MCKENZIE: But this is true of every western industrialized country.

FRIEDMAN: That’s right and that’s why today __

MCKENZIE: Yeah.

FRIEDMAN: __ under current circumstances you cannot, unfortunately have free immigration. Not because there’s anything wrong with free immigration, but because we have other policies which make it impossible to adopt free immigration.

MCKENZIE: Well I’d like other reactions. Is it at all feasible to open the door of the labor market internationally now? Bill Brady?

BRADY: I would __ I would say yes providing they open the door to us. I think that the door to not only the labor market, the door to all markets should be __ should be open. That is the product markets.

W. WILLIAMS: My feelings about the undocumented workers of Mexican-Americans are inscribed at the foot of the Statue of Liberty. I think that the people should have the right to come to this country. Now, those who would say, you know, I hear a number of people saying that, well the immigrants are contributing to our unemployment problem. And I point this out to some people, I said, “look, you know, this is the same rhetoric that the Irish used when the blacks were coming up from the north, ” you know, they’re using blacks as scapegoats. They’re saying, “get those people back where they came from so that our members can get jobs, ” you know. Unions were as well doing this, you know, they called them scabs, strikebreakers, etcetera, etcetera. So I do not wish for Mexican-Americans to become the new scapegoats of our particular national problems. They are not the problem, and our nation benefits to the extent that these people come here and work. And to that extent __ to that extent__ so it’s kind of good for them to remain illegal aliens as opposed to being legal aliens where they’re subject to our welfare programs, so that we don’t want them to come here to __

(Several people talking at once.)

GREEN: I think that this country cannot have a group of workers to remain outside the framework of our laws and our protection. And as long as we have workers who are attracted to the United States because of the standards of living; and I think minimum wages play a part in that as part of that attraction. But it seems to me to have undocumented workers without providing either a means of protection for them and it seems to me that we’ve got to go to the question of providing the amnesty for those generations of workers who have come here over a period of time, now two, three, maybe four generations. We have to see that they have the same rights and protection of all other workers. And as it stands now, large numbers of them live outside the framework of the laws and statutes that we have on the __ on our books.

MCKENZIE: Comment Milton.

FRIEDMAN: They do and the tragedy of the situation, as what Walter Williams point out, that as long as they are undocumented and illegal they are a clear net gain, the nation benefits and they benefit. They wouldn’t be here if they didn’t. The tragedy is that we’ve adopted all these other policies so that if we convert them into legal residents it’s no longer clear that we benefit. They may benefit, but it’s no longer clear that we do. What Lynn Williams said before is again a travesty on what was actually going on. The real boost to the trade union movement came after the Great Depression of the 1930s; that Great Depression was not a failure of capitalism; it was not a failure of the private market system as we pointed out in another one of the programs in this series; it was a failure of government. It was not the case that somehow or other there was a decline in the conditions of the working class that produced a great surge of unionism. On the contrary __ unions have never accounted for more than one out of four or one out of five of American workers. The American worker benefited not out of unions, he benefited in spite of unions. He benefited because there was greater opportunity because there were people who were willing to invest their money because there was an opportunity for people to work, to save, to invest. That’s still the case today. You say, we have to provide them with something or other Ernest. Who are the “we”?

GREEN: We the people.

FRIEDMAN: How do we the people __ but how do we the people do it?

GREEN: And it seems __ we the people provide them the protection by seeing that their safety __

MCKENZIE: You’re talking about the immigration population now.

GREEN: __ and occupational health codes that protects the environment that they work in, see that they have civil rights laws that protect their own person. See that they have civil liberties laws that protect them further. We the people of this country provide that protection.

W. WILLIAMS: Why are they coming here it’s so bad? If they don’t have, you know, you’re kind of painting an image, you know. Why are these people coming? We’re not pulling them here by chains.

GREEN: It’s obvious why people come here; it’s one of the wealthiest nations in the world.

(Several talking at once.)

MCKENZIE: Gentlemen, don’t all talk at once. Lynn, and then __

W. WILLIAMS: So what are you talking about protecting them?

GREEN: Why did you leave Little Rock, Arkansas to go to Philadelphia? It seems to point__

L. WILLIAMS: It seems to me that it’s obvious __

W. WILLIAMS: Would you extend the courtesy to finish. Look, look, first thing, look, let me say the following things: There’s some basic things that we need to know.

L. WILLIAMS: Well now are you going to say the thing I was interrupting and then say five more things. I mean there isn’t all afternoon.

W. WILLIAMS: You know, labor unions, and minimum wages for that case cannot improve the condition of the working people of the country.

L. WILLIAMS: We do it everyday.

W. WILLIAMS: Because if__ are you suggesting __

L. WILLIAMS: We improve the working conditions of working people in countries all around the world, everyday.

W. WILLIAMS: Well you know this __ you know what you’re telling the audience, you’re saying that you can solve the problems in Bangladesh. You can make them a rich country if you tell them to unionize like we are __

L. WILLIAMS: I didn’t say that.

W. WILLIAMS: __and demand high wages.

L. WILLIAMS: No, I didn’t say anything remotely like that.

W. WILLIAMS: It’s productivity that keeps income low.

MCKENZIE: Lynn, let him finish.

BRADY: I come back to my initial question: why are so many leaving the union?

L. WILLIAMS: There aren’t very many leaving the union.

BRADY: Oh, there are too. I’ve given you the statistics.

L. WILLIAMS: Ah, now, do you think I’m __ you grind off some percentages. I live in the labor movement.

BRADY: You __ do you have other percentages?

FRIEDMAN: In or on?

L. WILLIAMS: In, with and on. And of course they pay me, of course, and I don’t have any objection to that at all.

FRIEDMAN: Neither do I.

Dear Senator Pryor, here are some spending cut suggestions (“Thirsty Thursday”, Open letter to Senator Pryor)

Why do I keep writing and email Senator Pryor suggestions on how to cut our budget? I gave him hundreds of ideas about how to cut spending and as far as I can tell he has taken none of my suggestions. You can find some of my suggestions herehereherehere, hereherehereherehere, herehereherehereherehereherehereherehere,  here, and  here, and they all were emailed to him. In fact, I have written 13 posts pointing out reasons why I believe Senator Pryor’s re-election attempt will be unsuccessful. HERE I GO AGAIN WITH ANOTHER EMAIL I JUST SENT TO SENATOR PRYOR!!!

Dear Senator Pryor,

Why not pass the Balanced  Budget amendment? As you know that federal deficit is at all time high (1.6 trillion deficit with revenues of 2.2 trillion and spending at 3.8 trillion).

On my blog www.thedailyhatch.org . I took you at your word and sent you over 100 emails with specific spending cut ideas. (Actually there were over 160 emails with specific spending cut suggestions.) However, I did not see any of them in the recent debt deal that Congress adopted although you did respond to me several times. Now I am trying another approach. Every week from now on I will send you an email explaining different reasons why we need the Balanced Budget Amendment. It will appear on my blog on “Thirsty Thursday” because the government is always thirsty for more money to spend. Today I actually have included a great article below from the Heritage Foundation concerning an area of our federal budget that needs to be cut down to size. The funny thing about the Sequester and the 2.4% of cuts in future increases is that President Obama set these up and then he acted like the sky was falling in as the cartoons indicate in the newspapers.

IF YOU TRULY WANT TO CUT THE BUDGET AND BALANCE THE BUDGET THEN SUBMIT THESE POTENTIAL BUDGET CUTS PRESENTED BELOW!!

Representative Marlin Stutzman (R-IN), a fourth-generation farmer, is asking his House colleagues to separate the food stamp program from the “farm” bill.

Stutzman said he filed an amendment that would allow the House to vote on a farm-only farm bill. Lawmakers begin debate on the bill Tuesday. Stutzman outlined similar concerns during a Heritage Foundation briefing last week.

In a statement, Stutzman said:

Right now, this trillion dollar spending package is a farm bill in name only. Congress must remove welfare provisions from the farm bill and give taxpayers the honest debate they deserve on both. It’s simple: food stamp policy isn’t farm policy. Yet, most Americans are shocked to learn that about 80 percent of the farm bill’s spending goes to Washington’s out-of-control food stamp program. With our nation nearly $17 trillion in debt, the American people deserve an open, transparent debate and that can only happen when Washington stops playing games with deceptively named spending bills.

With 80 percent of farm bill spending allocated to food stamps, and roughly one in seven Americans dependent on the program, Stutzman couldn’t have introduced these amendments at a more appropriate time.

Food stamps and farming are two issues far too important to lump together in a nearly $1 trillion bill. Even Senator Thad Cochran (R-MS), the top Republican on the Senate Agriculture Committee, admitted that including food stamps in farm bill was done for political reasons because it “helps get the farm bill passed.”

The Balanced Budget Amendment is the only thing I can think of that would force Washington to cut spending. We have only a handful of balanced budgets in the last 60 years, so obviously what we are doing is not working. We are passing along this debt to the next generation. YOUR APPROACH HAS BEEN TO REJECT THE BALANCED BUDGET “BECAUSE WE SHOULD CUT THE BUDGET OURSELF,” WELL THEN HERE IS YOUR CHANCE!!!! SUBMIT THESE CUTS!!!!

Dear Mr. President,

I know that you receive 20,000 letters a day and that you actually read 10 of them every day. I really do respect you for trying to get a pulse on what is going on out here. I know that you don’t agree with my pro-life views but I wanted to challenge you as a fellow Christian to re-examine your pro-choice view. Although we are both Christians and have the Bible as the basis for our moral views, I did want you to take a close look at the views of the pro-life atheist Nat Hentoff too.  Hentoff became convinced of the pro-life view because of secular evidence that shows that the unborn child is human. I would ask you to consider his evidence and then of course reverse your views on abortion.

Nat Hentoff is an atheist, but he became a pro-life activist because of the scientific evidence that shows that the unborn child is a distinct and separate human being and even has a separate DNA. His perspective is a very intriguing one that I thought you would be interested in. I have shared before many   cases (Bernard Nathanson, Donald Trump, Paul Greenberg, Kathy Ireland)    when other high profile pro-choice leaders have changed their views and this is just another case like those. I have contacted the White House over and over concerning this issue and have even received responses. I am hopeful that people will stop and look even in a secular way (if they are not believers) at this abortion debate and see that the unborn child is deserving of our protection.That is why the writings of Nat Hentoff of the Cato Institute are so crucial.

In the film series “WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE HUMAN RACE?” the arguments are presented  against abortion (Episode 1),  infanticide (Episode 2),   euthanasia (Episode 3), and then there is a discussion of the Christian versus Humanist worldview concerning the issue of “the basis for human dignity” in Episode 4 and then in the last episode a close look at the truth claims of the Bible.

Blackballing Nat Hentoff

A couple weeks ago I got a call from Nat Hentoff. Hentoff, 86, is a legendary civil libertarian and journalist. He’s at the point is his career when he should just be sitting back and receiving lifetime achievement awards. But there’s one problem.

Nat Hentoff is pro-life. He had called from New York to thank me for some pro-life columns I had written. I was stunned; Hentoff is one of my favorite writers, and him reaching out is a tremendous honor. I’m a jazz fan and have been reading Hentoff’s columns for 25 years. (The man actually met Duke Ellington!) We talked about our jazz favorites, including my favorite singer Kurt Elling. Hentoff is still mentally sharp, even if he is doing physical therapy for various age-related issues.

Hentoff’s conversion from pro-choice to pro-life, and the fallout that resulted, is explained in an essay in the new book, The Debate Since Roe: Making the Case Against Abortion 1975-2010. It’s a compendium of essays from the journal Human Life Review.

A famous liberal who was a staple at the Village Voice and who had a column in the Washington Post, in the 1980s Hentoff actually let himself be swayed by evidence about abortion. It happened when Hentoff was reporting on the case of Baby Jane Doe.

Baby Jane Doe was a Long Island infant born with spina bifida and hydrocephalus, which is excess fluid in the cranium. With surgery, spina-bifida babies can grow up to be productive adults. Yet Baby Jane’s parents, on their doctor’s advice, had refused both surgery to close her spine and a shunt to drain the fluid from her brain. In resisting the federal government’s attempt to enforce treatment, the parents pleaded privacy.

As Hentoff told the Washington Times in a 1989 profile, his “curiosity was not so much the case itself but the press coverage.” Everyone on the media was echoing the same talking points about “women’s rights” and “privacy.”

“Whenever I see that kind of story, where everybody agrees, I know there’s something wrong,” Hentoff told the Times. says. “I finally figured out they were listening to the [parents’] lawyer.”

Hentoff dug into the case and the abortion industry at large, and what he found shocked him. He came across the published reports of experiments in what doctors at Yale-New Haven Hospital called “early death as a management option” for infants “considered to have little or no hope of achieving meaningful ‘humanhood.'” He talked with handicapped people who could have been killed by abortion.

Hentoff’s liberal friends didn’t appreciate his conversion: “They were saying, ‘What’s the big fuss about? If the parents had known she was going to come in this way, they would have had an abortion. So why don’t you consider it a late abortion and go on to something else? Here were liberals, decent people, fully convinced themselves that they were for individual rights and liberties but willing to send into eternity these infants because they were imperfect, inconvenient, costly. I saw the same attitude on the part of the same kinds of people toward abortion, and I thought it was pretty horrifying.”

The reaction from America’s corrupt fourth estate was instant. Hentoff, a Guggenheim fellow and author of dozens of books, was a pariah. Several of his colleagues at the Village Voice, which had run his column since the 1950s, stopped talking to him. When the National Press Foundation wanted to give him a lifetime achievement award, there was a bitter debate amongst members whether Hentoff should even be honored (he was). Then they stopped running his columns. You heard his name less and less. In December 2008, the Village Voice officially let him go.

When journalist Dan Rather was revealed to have poor news judgment, if not outright malice, for using fake documents to try and change the course of a presidential election, he was given a new TV show and a book deal — not to mention a guest spot on The Daily Show. The media has even attempted a resuscitation of anti-Semite Helen Thomas, who was recently interviewed in Playboy.

By accepting the truth about abortion, and telling that truth, Nat Hentoff may be met with silence by his peers when he goes to his reward. The shame will be theirs, not his.

I am pleading to you on the basis of the Bible to please review your religious views concerning abortion. It was the Bible that caused the abolition movement of the 1800’s and it also was the basis for Martin Luther King’s movement for civil rights and it also is the basis for recognizing the unborn children.

Dear Mr. President,

I know that you receive 20,000 letters a day and that you actually read 10 of them every day. I really do respect you for trying to get a pulse on what is going on out here.

The federal government debt is growing so much that it is endangering us because if things keep going like they are now we will not have any money left for the national defense because we are so far in debt as a nation. We have been spending so much on our welfare state through food stamps and other programs that I am worrying that many of our citizens are becoming more dependent on government and in many cases they are losing their incentive to work hard because of the welfare trap the government has put in place. Other nations in Europe have gone down this road and we see what mess this has gotten them in. People really are losing their faith in big government and they want more liberty back. It seems to me we have to get back to the founding  principles that made our country great.  We also need to realize that a big government will encourage waste and corruption. The recent scandals in our government have proved my point. In fact, the jokes you made at Ohio State about possibly auditing them are not so funny now that reality shows how the IRS was acting more like a monster out of control. Also raising taxes on the job creators is a very bad idea too. The Laffer Curve clearly demonstrates that when the tax rates are raised many individuals will move their investments to places where they will not get taxed as much.

Will Rogers has a great quote that I love. He noted, “Lord, the money we do spend on Government and it’s not one bit better than the government we got for one-third the money twenty years ago”(Paula McSpadden Love, The Will Rogers Book, (1972) p. 20.)

We got to lower the size of government so we don’t have these abuses like this in the IRS.

Cartoonists v. the IRS

Call me perverse, but I’m enjoying this IRS scandal. It’s good to see them suffer a tiny fraction of the agony they impose on the American people.

I’ve already shared a couple of cartoons on the topic, and I also posted a photo from my newest sports hero that captures how most of us feel about the least-favorite part of the federal behemoth.

Last but not least, this Chuck Asay cartoon may be the best of the bunch. When we get in trouble with the IRS (even if we’ve done nothing wrong), we’re guilty ’til we prove ourselves innocent.

Too bad we can’t exercise our rights, just like the IRS hack who just pleaded the fifth and refused to answer questions about her role in the scandal.

Now that I’ve shared all these cartoons, let’s remember that we should assign some of the blame to politicians.

And I’m not referring to the President and the culture of corruption and Chicago-style sleaze that seems to be engulfing the Obama Administration.

I’m talking about the constant legislative tinkering and the 74,000 pages of Byzantine complexity that has been created in the 100 years since the income tax was created.

However, there are many reasons why the IRS bureaucracy deserves scorn.

So let’s pass the flat tax, but never forget that a disproportionate share of bad people seem drawn to government.

I love the works of Francis Schaeffer and I have been on the internet reading several blogs that talk about Schaeffer’s work and the work below   was really helpful. Schaeffer’s film series “How should we then live?  Wikipedia notes, “According to Schaeffer, How Should We Then Live traces Western history from Ancient Rome until the time of writing (1976) along three lines: the philosophic, scientific, and religious.[3] He also makes extensive references to art and architecture as a means of showing how these movements reflected changing patterns of thought through time. He married Edith Seville on July 26, 1935.           They had three daughters and one son, born between 1937 and 1951. Schaeffer           entered Westminster Theological Seminary in 1935 and transferred to           the newly formed Faith Theological Seminary in 1937, graduating from           there in 1938.
    Following graduation, he was by some accounts the first person ordained           by the Bible Presbyterian Church and became pastor of the Covenant Presbyterian           Church in Grove City, PA. In 1941 he was elected moderator of the Great           Lakes Presbytery [BPC] and began serving as associate pastor of the           Bible Presbyterian Church in Chester, PA. From 1943 to 1947, he pastored           First Bible Presbyterian Church in St. Louis, MO, and served as moderator           of the Midwest Presbytery [BPC].
    During this time Schaeffer and his wife founded the Children for Christ           ministry in St. Louis, which soon became widely adopted by other evangelical           churches. In 1947 he traveled throughout Europe as a representative           of the Independent Board for Presbyterian Foreign Missions and as the           American Secretary for the Foreign Relations Department of the American           Council of Christian Churches. In 1948 he moved with his family to Lausanne,           Switzerland to begin mission work, and moved the following year to Champery,           Switzerland, where he wrote Basic Bible Studies.
    In 1953 he returned to the United States on furlough and began an extensive           speaking tour. He was awarded an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree           in 1954 by Highland College in Long Beach, CA. Later that same year,           he returned to Switzerland and moved to Huemoz, Switzerland. By 1955           he had resigned from the mission board and began L’Abri Fellowship,           which became the primary focus of his life. In 1971 he received the           honorary Doctor of Letters degree from Gordon College, Wenham, MA.
    Work began in 1974 on the book and film versions of one of his more           well-known works, How Shall We Then Live?, during which time           he also helped to found the International Council on Biblical Inerrancy.           The film series Whatever Happened to the Human Race? was also           underway by 1977. Dr. Schaeffer was diagnosed with lymphoma cancer in           1978, which made necessary a move of the American headquarters of L’Abri           to Rochester, MN to better allow for the continued conducting of seminars           on both film series while undergoing chemotherapy treatments at the           Mayo Clinic.
    In 1981 he reedited and pubished The Complete Works of Francis Schaeffer.           The Simon Greenleaf School of Law awarded him an honorary Doctor           of Laws degree in 1983, but he was forced to return in critical condition           from Switzerland to the Mayo Clinic. Despite the debilitating illness,           he was able in 1984 to complete The Great Evangelical Disaster and           a seminar tour. On May 15, 1984, he died at his home in Rochester, MN           and was buried at Oakwood Cemetary in Rochester.

“We Don’t Have Forever,”         by Dr. Francis A. Schaeffer:
The following transcript was recently provided by the courtesy         of Jeff Lawrence of Montgomery, AL. It originally was printed in the PCA         Messenger in 1980:

(Francis A. Schaeffer, founder of the L’Abri Fellowship,         author of 21 books, and principal in the “How Should We Then Live?”         and “Whatever Happened to the Human Race?” film-seminar series,         was the featured speaker at the 1980 “Consultation on Presbyterian         Alternatives” sponsored by the Presbyterian Church in America. His         counsel, excerpted here from the full transcript of his Pittsburgh messages,         was heard by participants from several Presbyterian communions.)

Two biblical principles must be practiced simultaneously,         at each step of the way, if we are to be really Bible-believing Christians.          One is the principle of the practice of the purity of the visible church.          The other is the principle of an observable love among all true Christians.

Those of us who left the old Presbyterian Church USA (the         “Northern” Church) 44 years ago made mistakes which marked the         movement for years to come.  The second principle often was not practiced.         In particular we often failed to manifest an observable love for the fellow         believers who stayed in that denomination when others of us left.

Things were said which are very difficult to forget even         more than 40 years later.  The periodicals of those who left tended to         spend more time attacking the real Christians who stayed in the old denomination         than in dealing with the liberals.  Those who came out at times refused         to pray with those who had not come out.  Many who left totally broke         off all forms of fellowship with true brothers in Christ who did not come         out.

What was destroyed was Christ’s command to love each other.          And what was left was often a turning inward, a self-righteousness, a         hardness, and, too often, a feeling that withdrawal had made those who         came out so right that anything they did could be excused.

Further, having learned these bad habits, they later treated         each other badly when the new groups had minor differences among themselves.

We cannot stress both of the principles simultaneously         in the flesh.  Sometimes we stress purity without love.  Or we can stress         love without purity.  In order to stress both simultaneously we must look         moment to moment to the work of Christ and to the work of the Holy Spirit.          Without this, a stress on purity becomes hard, proud, and legalistic.          Without this, a stress on love becomes compromise. Spirituality begins         to have real meaning in our lives as we begin to exhibit (and the emphasis         here is on exhibit, not just talk) simultaneously the holiness of God         and the love of God.  Without our exhibition of both, our marvelous God         and Lord is not set forth.  Rather, a caricature is set forth and He is         dishonored.

We paid a terrible price for what happened in those early         days.  As some of you now come out of your denominations, please do learn         from our mistakes.  Each pastor, each congregation must be led by the         Holy Spirit.  If some disappoint you, do not turn bitter.

One of the joys of my life occurred at the Lausanne Congress         (the 1974 International Congress on World Evangelization in Lausanne,         Switzerland). Some men from the newly formed Presbyterian Church in America         asked me to attend a meeting they and others had called there. When I         arrived I found that it was made up of Southern men who had just left         the Presbyterian Church US to form the PCA and some Christians who were         still in the PCUS. Someone from each side spoke. Both said to me that         the meeting was possible because of my voice and especially my little         book, The Church Before the Watching World (published by InterVarsity         Press). I must say I could have wept, and perhaps I did. It is possible         for us to do better than we would naturally do. It is not possible if         we ignore the fleshly dangers and fail to look to our living Lord for         his strength and grace.

Those of us who left our old denomination in the Thirties         had another great problem, as I see it. It was confusion over where to         place the basic chasm which marks off who we are. Does that chasm mark         us as those who are building Bible-believing churches and that on this         side of the chasm we hold the distinctives of being Presbyterian and Reformed?         Or is the primary chasm that we are Presbyterian and Reformed and that         we are divided from all who are not? The answer makes a great deal of         difference.

When we go to a town to start a church, are we going there         with the primary motivation to build a church which is loyal to Presbyterians         and the Reformed faith, or are we going there to build a church which         will preach the Gospel which historic, Bible-believing Christianity holds,         and then on this side of that chasm teach that which we believe is true         to the Bible in regard to church government and doctrine? The difference         makes a difference to our mentality, to our motivation, and to the breadth         of our outreach. I must say, to me one view is catholic, biblical and         gives good promise of success; the other is introverted and self-limiting,         yes, and sectarian. I spoke of a good promise of success. I mean on two         levels: First in church growth and a healthy outlook among those we reach;         second, in providing leadership in the whole church of Christ.

We alone do not face this problem of putting the chasm         at the wrong place, of course. A too zealous mentality on the Lutheran         view of the sacraments is the same. A too sectarian mentality in regard         to the mode of baptism is another. The zeal of the Plymouth Brethren for         an unpaid ministry is often the same. No, it is not just our problem.         But it is our problem. To put the chasm in the wrong place is to fail         to fulfill our calling, and I am convinced that when we do so we displease         our Lord.

Those who remain in the old-line churches have their own         set of problems. In contrast to the problem of hardness to which those         who withdraw are prone, those who remain are likely to develop a general         latitudinarianism. One who accepts ecclesiastical latitudinarianism easily         steps into a cooperative latitudinarianism which can become a doctrinal         latitudinarianism and especially a letdown on a clear view of Scripture.

This is what happened in certain segments of what I would         call the evangelical establishment. Out of the evangelical latitudinarianism         of the Thirties and Forties grew the letdown in regard to the Scripture         in certain areas of the evangelical structure in the Seventies. Large         sections of evangelicalism today put all they can into acting as though         it makes no real difference as to whether we hold the historic view of         Scripture or the existential view. The existential methodology says that         the Bible is authoritative when it teaches “religious” things but         not when it touches that which is historic, scientific, or such things         as the male/female relationship.

Not all who have stayed in the liberal denominations have         done this, by any means, but it is hard to escape.  I don’t see how those         who have chosen to stay in (no matter what occurs) can escape a latitudinarian         mentality which will struggle to paper over the differences on Scripture         in order to keep an external veneer of unity.  That veneer in fact obscures         a real lack of unity on the crucial point of Scripture.  And when the         doctrinal latitudinarianism sets in we can be sure from all of church         history and from observation in our own period of church history that         in just a generation or two the line between evangelical and liberal will         be lost.

This is already observable in that the liberals largely         have shifted to the existential methodology and have expressed great approval         that the “moderate evangelicals” have done so.  The trend will         surely continue.  Unless we see the new liberalism with its existential         methodology as a whole, and reject it as a whole, we will, to the extent         to which we tolerate it, be confused in our thinking.  Failure to reject         it will also involve us in the general relativism of our day and compromising         in our actions.

The second major problem of those who stay in the liberally         controlled denominations is the natural tendency to constantly move back         the line at which the final stand will be taken.  For example, can you         imagine Clarence Macartney, Donald Grey Barnhouse or T. Roland Phillips         being in a denomination in which the baffle line was the ordination of         women?  Can you imagine these great evangelical preachers of the Twenties         and Thirties (who stayed in the Presbyterian Church USA) now being in         a denomination which refuses to ordain a young man whose only fault was         that while he said he would not preach against the ordination of women         yet he would not say he had changed his mind that it was unbiblical? Can         you imagine that these leaders of the conservative cause in an earlier         era would have considered it a victory to have stalled the ordination         of practicing homosexuals and practicing lesbians?  What do you think         Macartney, Barnhouse, and Phillips would have said about these recent         developments?  Such a situation in their denomination would never have         been in their minds as in the realm of conceivable.

The line does move back.  In what presbytery of the Northern         Presbyterian Church can you bring an ordained man under biblical discipline         for holding false views of doctrine and expect him to be disciplined?

Beware of false victories.  Even if a conservative man         is elected moderator of the general assembly (as Macartney was in 1924),         it would amount to absolutely nothing.  Despite the jubilation among conservatives         at Macartney’s election, the bureaucracy simply rolled on, and not too         many years later conservative leader J. Gresham Machen could be unfrocked.          Nelson Bell was elected moderator of the Southern Church later (in 1972),         and nothing changed.  The power centers of the bureaucracy and the liberally-controlled         seminaries were unmoved.

There are always those who say, “don’t break up our         ranks … wait a while longer … wait for this … wait for that.”         It is always wait.  Never act. But 40 years is a long time to wait when         things are always and consistently getting worse.  And (with my present         health problem) I tell you soberly, we do not have forever to take that         courageous and costly stand for Christ that we sometimes talk about. We         do not have forever for that. We hear many coaxing words, but watch for         the power structure to strike out when it is threatened. If the liberals’         power is really in danger or if they fear the loss of property, watch         out!

What of the future? We live in a day that is fast-moving.          The United States is moving at great speed toward totally humanistic orientation         in society and state.  Do you think this will leave our own little projects,         our own church, and our own lives untouched?  Don’t be silly. The warnings         are on every side. When a San Francisco Orthodox Presbyterian congregation         can be dragged into court for breaking the law of discrimination because         it dismissed an avowed, practicing homosexual as an organist, can we be         so blind as to not hear all the warning bells go off?  When by a ruling         of a federal court the will of Congress can be overturned concerning the         limitation on the willful killing of unborn children, should not the warning         bells go off as to the kind of pressures ahead of us?

Who supports these things?  The liberal denominations         do, publicly, formally, and financially.  And it puts into a vise those         of us who stand for biblical morality, let alone doctrine.  Beyond the         denominations, it is their councils of churches that support not only         these things but also terrorist groups. They give moral support and money.          Should we support this by our denominational affiliation? We may seem         isolated from the results for a time but that is only because we are too         blind to see.

I don’t think we have a lot of time.  The hour is very         late, but I don’t think it is too late in this country. This is not a         day of retreat and despair.  In America it is still possible to turn things         around.  But we don’t have forever.

Schaeffer to Himself               on May 15th, 1984, after a rather lengthy illness, andWhereas Dr. Schaeffer has been a member of this Presbytery longer             than any other member, andWhereas his ministry of evangelism and church building,               together with his defence of the historic Christian faith, and his               unceasing efforts to strengthen and preserve the biblical foundations               of our culture have not only resulted in the salvation of many souls,               but have been an inestimable blessing to multitudes of men and women               and have earned him a world-wide reputation as a valiant and effective               Christian philosopher and theologian, andWhereas he has unstintingly given of himself in               the latter part of his life to the fight against the monstrous evils               of abortion, infanticide and euthanasia, so much as that many have               been emboldened to join the battle for the sanctity of life, andWhereas his many books have left behind him a rich               treasure of teaching which will be a part of the permanent heritage               of the Christian Church,

BE IT RESOLVED that the Presbytery of Missouri,               meeting at Covenant Presbyterian Church of St. Louis on July 20,               1984, express its profound gratitude to God for the life and ministry               of Dr. Francis A. Schaeffer, and
