Open letter to President Obama (Part 505) (First chapter of the book “Francis Schaeffer” by Colin Duriez)

Open letter to President Obama (Part 505)

(Emailed to White House on 5-3-13.)

President Obama c/o The White House 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW Washington, DC 20500

Dear Mr. President,

I know that you receive 20,000 letters a day and that you actually read 10 of them every day. I really do respect you for trying to get a pulse on what is going on out here. I have a pro-life point of view because I am a Christian and I base my views on an interpretation of the Bible. Francis Schaeffer’s teachings probably influenced more in this area more than any other person. In 1979 he teamed up with Dr. C. Everett Koop and put together the film series WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE HUMAN RACE? and here is the first episode with covers the issue of abortion. Since you are also a Christian Mr. President I thought would take a great interest in what they had to say.

Francis Schaeffer: What Ever Happened to the Human Race? (Full-Length Documentary)

Part 1 on abortion runs from 00:00 to 39:50, Part 2 on Infanticide runs from 39:50 to 1:21:30, Part 3 on Youth Euthanasia runs from 1:21:30 to 1:45:40, Part 4 on the basis of human dignity runs from 1:45:40 to 2:24:45 and Part 5 on the basis of truth runs from 2:24:45 to 3:00:04

Below you will see more about my pro-life views and the fact that Schaeffer prompted the Christians in the 1980’s to support Reagan’s pro-life views.

Dr. Schaeffer’s sweeping epic on the rise and decline of Western thought and Culture

_______________________

I love the works of Francis Schaeffer and I have been on the internet reading several blogs that talk about Schaeffer’s work and the work below   by Colin Duriez was really helpful. Schaeffer’s film series “How should we then live?  Wikipedia notes, “According to Schaeffer, How Should We Then Live traces Western history from Ancient Rome until the time of writing (1976) along three lines: the philosophic, scientific, and religious.[3] He also makes extensive references to art and architecture as a means of showing how these movements reflected changing patterns of thought through time. Schaeffer’s central premise is: when we base society on the Bible, on the infinite-personal God who is there and has spoken,[4] this provides an absolute by which we can conduct our lives and by which we can judge society.  Here are some posts I have done on this series: Francis Schaeffer’s “How should we then live?” Video and outline of episode 10 “Final Choices” , episode 9 “The Age of Personal Peace and Affluence”, episode 8 “The Age of Fragmentation”, episode 7 “The Age of Non-Reason” , episode 6 “The Scientific Age” ,  episode 5 “The Revolutionary Age” , episode 4 “The Reformation”,  episode 3 “The Renaissance”, episode 2 “The Middle Ages,”, and  episode 1 “The Roman Age,” .

In the film series “WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE HUMAN RACE?” the arguments are presented  against abortion (Episode 1),  infanticide (Episode 2),   euthanasia (Episode 3), and then there is a discussion of the Christian versus Humanist worldview concerning the issue of “the basis for human dignity” in Episode 4 and then in the last episode a close look at the truth claims of the Bible.

EDITOR’S NOTE:  The following is an excerpt from Francis Schaeffer by Colin Duriez (Crossway).

Preface

His preferred medium was talk—conversation, whether with an individual or with a large group of people. He had the uncanny knack of addressing an individual personally, even if one was sitting with several hundred other people. His tapes, books, and films are best seen as embodiments of his conversation or table talk. The overwhelming impression of those who met him briefly or more extensively, particularly in connection with his homely yet expansive community at L’Abri in Switzerland, was his kindness, a word that constantly occurs in people’s memories of him, whether Dutch, English, American, Irish, or other nationality.

His attire was quirky and memorable, dapper in knee-breeches and colorful tops, a goatee beard he wore later in life adding to his artistic, cultured appearance, far from the stereotype of the evangelical pastor. He was cool, knew about Bob Dylan, Jackson Pollock, Merce Cunningham, the older Wittgenstein, the younger Heidegger, and neoorthodoxy and spoke of postmodernism in the sixties before it was clearly post. He bluntly challenged evangelical and fundamentalist pietism and later superspirituality as “neo-platonic.” This challenge left at least one of his students, me, wondering at the time how it was “neo” as well as “platonic,” but it had the desired effect of leading to a spiritual pilgrimage that was often painful.

Francis Schaeffer was a small man whose giant passion for truth, for reality, for God, and for the needs of people made him a key shaper of modern Christianity, larger than any label put on him. This biography portrays his formation and achievement, illuminating the complex person and his vivid teaching.

Having studied under Francis Schaeffer when young, interviewed him about the course of his life near the end of it, and heard many friends and others acknowledge their debt to him, I waited in vain for a comprehensive biography. I have therefore tried to meet this need. It is now nearly a quarter-century since his death, and it seems to me that his essential message is as topical and important as it was in his lifetime. He has some detractors, but for me, he always eludes their nets. I have attempted to give an affectionate, accurate, warts-and-all portrait of a fascinating and complex person whom people always remembered. To ensure a truthful and reasonably objective portrait, I have been guided by over 180,000 words of oral history concerning Francis Schaeffer. This oral history was gathered by the historian Christopher Catherwood, his wife (musicologist Paulette Catherwood), and myself. We carried out interviews in Switzerland, the Netherlands, England, Northern Ireland, and the USA, talking to a variety of people, including former L’Abri members, workers, helpers, students, as well as members of the immediate family.

I’ve also made use of PCA (Presbyterian Church of America) archive material, early writings of Francis Schaeffer, letters, biography and memoirs by Edith Schaeffer, writings of the novelist Frank Schaeffer, and assessments of the pastor-intellectual (including Time magazine and De Spiegel). I’ve put this into a continuous narrative so that the reader might get to know Francis Schaeffer, his vision and concerns, and the thrust of his teaching (the purpose of my book is, of course, biographical, not to give an analysis of Schaeffer’s thought).

My hope is that my book may play a little part in drawing a new generation of readers to Schaeffer’s crucial work and message—sadly, they can no longer have the benefit of the teacher in person. I emphasize teacher. Schaeffer was of the old school of teacher or master—charismatic, memorable, learned. Though he wasn’t a scholar in the usually accepted sense, he pushed those who truly listened to explore more, to learn more, to be more prepared for living as a Christian and human being in today’s post-Christian, media-rich, exciting, dangerous world. Like John Milton I believe the image of God is captured in a unique way in books, and though Schaeffer is dead, his mind and spirit are alive in his writings, even though they lack the elegance and style of a C. S. Lewis. His message can still leap from mind to mind, as it did at the time I remember as a student. Our world still cries out for his imaginative L’Abri (“The Shelter”), which can and should take many forms for differing needs.

A biography of Francis Schaeffer must account for his remarkable impact on people of many types—the intellectual, the humble laborer, the scientist, the artist, the doubting Christian, the questioning nonbeliever; man, woman, youth, and child; white, black, hairy, and smooth. After Francis Schaeffer’s first visit to Europe, still suffering from the effects of war in 1947, a wall of parochialism in his life began to collapse—a process quickened by his friendship with the Dutchman Hans Rookmaaker and his own long-standing interest in and love for art. A biography of him (or a critique, for that matter) cannot itself be parochial in any sense, intellectual or regional. He was larger than any denominational or political context.

In this book I write about Francis Schaeffer’s strengths and flaws, placing him in the context of his times, portraying the formation of his ideas and the genesis of his lectures, writings, seminars, and movies, as well as the complex person and his relationships. I portray the establishment and impact of the L’Abri community, and the deeper idea of a “shelter,” as Schaeffer’s most representative and abiding achievement, showing the development of this unique phenomenon and revealing its importance in the context of church and recent cultural history. The man himself is pictured as in essence undivided, rather than consisting of two or even three Schaeffers, though he went through sometimes anguished change and growth. Even his late and very emphatic association with the American church in the Reagan years was for him a development from the L’Abri work, not a capitulation to what he called the “middle-class church.”

Though Francis Schaeffer is undivided, the distinct phases of his life are all portrayed here, each illuminating the other phases: his working-class childhood in Germantown, Pennsylvania; his intellectual and cultural awakening and student and seminary years; the ten years as a “separated” pastor in eastern and midwestern America; his early years in Europe working with his wife Edith for Children for Christ and speaking widely on the dangers of a new, deceptive liberalism as regards the Bible; the crisis in his faith resulting in a deep experience of the Holy Spirit; the birth and early struggles of L’Abri in Switzerland; the gradual opening up of a wider ministry through taped lectures, international speaking, books, and the formation of new L’Abri centers, first in England, then in other countries; and, at the end of his life, the dramatic, celebrity phase of the movies and large seminars, in which Schaeffer extended his cultural analysis to the sphere of politics, law, and government, putting his long-standing role as a compassionate controversialist into the spotlight, with all its distortions of view.

As I was completing this book, Frank Schaeffer’s Crazy for God was published. This is a confessional memoir of his life. While it vividly and sometimes poignantly portrays Frank’s own life and journey, it added little to what I had already documented about his father—as a biographer I knew his strengths and weaknesses. Many of those interviewed for this book spoke of them openly. What I must remark on is Frank’s portrayal of his father as keeping up a façade of conviction about his faith, especially in his final years. This bears no relation to what was the case. Francis Schaeffer was always open about his personal struggles and failings—this was the secret of his strength as a pastor and as a counselor. He emphatically did not divorce his inner and public life. When I was a young student, on my first or second visit to his L’Abri community in Switzerland, I once joined him on the descent to the chalet-style chapel for his regular Saturday night discussion. Suddenly he confided, “Colin, I feel like I’m about to jump out of an airplane without a parachute.”

In an unpublished letter to his close friend and peer Hans Rookmaaker, perhaps that same year, he confided that he was low after working hard on the manuscript of The God Who Is There with an editor: “I am so very much behind in every aspect of the work that I feel in a rather depressed mood which means of course that it is a difficult time. However, the Lord continues to open doors and we are thankful. . . . I would be glad if you would continue to pray for me personally because . . . this is a bit of a low period for me. However, I suppose I will be dug out in a couple of weeks and then I will feel better.”1

As my book reveals, Francis Schaeffer in the twilight of his life was as convinced of the truth-claims of Christianity and the efficacy of what he called the finished work of Christ as he was after his struggles in the early 1950s and even immediately after his conversion in 1930. Indeed, his conviction continued to deepen into his closing years, allowing him no respite from his grief over the lost condition of human beings and still expanding his empathy for those whom he encountered. In his final film series, Whatever Happened to the Human Race? He included a powerful episode about the historical underpinnings of Christian conviction.

What is the essence of Francis Schaeffer? Is it his system of theology, his books, his political campaigning, the existence of L’Abri? Ironically, though he attacked first the “old” modernism, then the “new” modernism of existentialism, neo-orthodoxy, and even, in anticipation, postmodernism, he demonstrates what might be called an existential Christianity—living in the moment; embracing the reality of existence; seeing the underpinning certainty of Christian faith in the historical death and resurrection of Jesus Christ; and reckoning on the specific intervention of the Holy Spirit in conversion at a point in time in a person’s life, after which he or she passes from death to life. Schaeffer might be dismissed as a scholar or even original thinker (though it can be argued he was both, but particularly the latter), but his realistic, existential Christianity is remarkable and perhaps unique for someone of his biblical orthodoxy in his generation and is the secret, perhaps, of his impact on many people of diverse backgrounds and nationalities.

A full list of acknowledgments appears toward the end of this book, but I must here especially express my thanks to Christopher and Paulette Catherwood, for their brilliant and enthusiastic help with the interviewing for this book; to Ted Griffin, for his wise and thorough editing; to others who added to this book in a very special way, including Lane Dennis, John and Prisca Sandri, Ranald and Susan Macaulay, and Udo and Deborah Middelmann. Though not well enough to give me more than a warm smile and greeting, Edith Schaeffer’s published records of the family and L’Abri history, and unpublished Family Letters must have a special mention. While Christopher, Paulette, and I interviewed, we received kindness and hospitality of a Dutch, Swiss, English, Irish, and American variety. I particularly remember the kindness of Marleen and Albert Hengelaar and the inspiring memories of the late Anky Rookmaaker as she reached back in her mind to the war years; the events she recounted seemed as yesterday. It is a privilege even to share a little in others’ lives.

The Petra Albums * Petra’s Lyrics

Petra

God Fixation is the latest project from a band that has stood the test of time in Christian music. Produced again by master-crafters John and Dino Elefante, along with Petra founder Bob Hartman, the album releases slightly more than one year after the successful Petra Praise 2: We Need Jesus, which launched a popular title cut as the theme song for Calvary Chapel’s Harvest Crusades.

The new album’s title, named after one of its songs, expresses a statement that Petra lead singer John Schlitt says rings through to the heart of where the band stands. “It says that we are fanatics over Jesus,” Schlitt says. “We are hooked on Him. In these times where that isn’t necessarily the cool thing to say or the cool way to say it. I don’t know any other way to put it. When we realize who Jesus really is, our eyes become fixated on him, and it changes our whole way of living.”

Petra is Christian music’s top selling group, with more than six million albums sold, two of those projects having been certified gold. It has earned three Grammy Awards, nine Dove Awards and more than two dozen CCM Christian Reader’s Poll Awards. And after 26 years of music ministry, God speaks through Petra the same way He did at the band’s inception, according to Schlitt: “That Jesus Christ is Lord, and He has a plan for your life. Why try it without Him?” Hartman, who retired from touring in 1995 and now spends his time as the band’s executive producer and songwriter, founded Petra in 1973. In addition to Schlitt, Petra includes drummer, Louie Weaver and guitarist/keyboard player, Kevin Brandow, guitarist Pete Orta and bassist, Lonnie Chapin. Schlitt and Weaver have been with the band for 12 and 16 years, respectively, while the other three members joined in 1997.

Despite numerous membership changes in the band’s lineup across more than a quarter of a century, Petra has maintained an uncompromising stance in its music and point of view. “We knew where we were suppose to go and we’ve kept in that direction,” says Schlitt. “We’ve always tried very hard to not be so staunch in our musical style that we were only going to do it one way and if people didn’t like it, tough. We’ve tried to be very open to what musical styles are popular at the time. Our music is a tool to get across the messages we believe in.”

Until just two years ago, Petra was an “older band” that might not have connected as well with younger audiences as it does today. Then came the addition of Brandow, Orta and Chapin, which Schlitt sees as the unfolding of God’s plan for Petra in the late 1990’s and beyond. “It added some fresh blood to Petra, and kind of a new mindset. And with Louie and myself, there’s a certain maturity here – so it’s almost the better of two worlds. I think anybody that’s seen us live can see that we’re very entertaining to the younger generation.” The evolution in band membership illustrates the power of the Lord’s ministry. Notes Schlitt, “Ministry has lasted longer than any band Petra has put together. The Christian band has changed for the ministry, whereas if it was another scenario if the ministry changed for the Christian band – then you’d start depending on man, and you’d start depending on yourself, and there will come a time when you’d fail. God never fails; He knows what He wants to do.”

VISITOR COMMENTS

When I first got into PETRA I liked to listen to AC DC, Pink Floyd, and stuff like that. I remember thinking to myself, why don’t they have any christian artists like that? Someone told me about PETRA so I blindly bought their THIS MEANS WAR! album. When I got it and listened to the first track, I knew God had answered my prayer.

I think that it is great that Petra has used their talents for the Lord and I think that they are the greatest christian rock band…and I don’t even really like rock music, but everytime I hear them, I turn the radio up and jam to it! I was at their concert that they played in Augusta, GA at the greenjackets game and I loved it!

Now I am going to their concert in Sandersville, GA for 2 reasons…1) because I absolutely love their music 2) my dad’s band (Safe Haven) is opening for them.

God Bless you, Petra. keep up the good and hard work!

all my love in the name of Jesus,

Well, I have to say, I’ve liked them for some time now. The very first tape I got of theirs was ‘Praise 11’. They really know how to make you just scream ‘Halelujah!’ I really want to see them but they never seem to be anywhere close by for me. My youngest daughter just loves the music. Infact one of our teachers at our school/church is a christian singer. Her and her husband have tapes out and preform different places around here. She also is in charge of the Jr. choir in which my daughter is part of. A couple weeks ago they sang “I will call upon the Lord” in church. They did it in a round too. They also have done “Lord I lift Your name on High”. Of course while they were singing it you wanted it to rock just a bit more but there are alot of elderly people at the church that, well, may not appreciate it that way.

Oh and one of my all time favorites is “Its our turn now!” that they (Petra) team up with Carmen. I love the video of that one.

Thanx and God Bless. Lori Corso from Kenosha, Wisconsin

My husband is the one who started to listen to them and then he got me to listen to them.

Thank you, David & Cochran from Southern California

So who’s ever wanting to know which band plays awesome, It’s PETRA.

“Schaeffer Sunday” Francis Schaeffer and Dr. C. Everett Koop asked Reagan to issue pro-life proclamation in 1983 (includes video ABORTION OF THE HUMAN RACE)

In the film series “WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE HUMAN RACE?” the arguments are presented  against abortion (Episode 1),  infanticide (Episode 2),   euthenasia (Episode 3), and then there is a discussion of the Christian versus Humanist worldview concerning the issue of “the basis for human dignity” in Episode 4 and then in the last episode a close look at the truth claims of the Bible.

I truly believe that many of the problems we have today in the USA are due to the advancement of humanism in the last few decades in our society. Ronald Reagan appointed the evangelical Dr. C. Everett Koop to the position of Surgeon General in his administration. He partnered with Dr. Francis Schaeffer in making the video below. It is very valuable information for Christians to have.  Actually I have included a video below that includes comments from him on this subject.

Did you know that Francis Schaeffer and Dr. C. Everett Koop asked President Reagan in 1983 to make a pro-life proclamation?

Thus says the LORD, “A voice is heard in Ramah, Lamentation and bitter weeping. Rachel is weeping for her children; She refuses to be comforted for her children, Because they are no more.”

Jeremiah 31:14-16

Sanctity of Human Life Sunday is held on the Sunday in January that falls closest to the day on which the Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton decisions were handed down by the U.S. Supreme Court on January 22, 1973.

Sanctity of Life Sunday began in 1983 when the Christian Action Council (now known as Care Net), founded with the help of Francis Schaeffer and former Surgeon General C. Everett Koop, “asked President Ronald Reagan to create a special day to focus on the intrinsic value of human life.” [Source]

President Reagan issued this proclamation:

Since 1973, however, more than 15 million unborn children have died in legalized abortions — a tragedy of stunning dimensions that stands in sad contrast to our belief that each life is sacred. These children, over tenfold the number of Americans lost in all our Nation’s wars, will never laugh, never sing, never experience the joy of human love; nor will they strive to heal the sick, or feed the poor, or make peace among nations. Abortion has denied them the first and most basic of human rights, and we are infinitely poorer for their loss.

We are poorer not simply for lives not led and for contributions not made, but also for the erosion of our sense of the worth and dignity of every individual. To diminish the value of one category of human life is to diminish us all. Slavery, which treated Blacks as something less than human, to be bought and sold if convenient, cheapened human life and mocked our dedication to the freedom and equality of all men and women. Can we say that abortion — which treats the unborn as something less than human, to be destroyed if convenient — will be less corrosive to the values we hold dear?

It has now been 40 years since the Supreme Court Roe v. Wade decision that made abortion on demand legal in all 50 states. Since that time, the 15 million babies referred to by President Reagan has become 55 million babies.

Abortion is the greatest evil in American history and dwarfs the genocide of many other nations throughout history.

And served their idols,
Which became a snare to them.
They even sacrificed their sons and their daughters to the demons,
And shed innocent blood,
The blood of their sons and their daughters,
Whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan;
And the land was polluted with the blood.
Psalm 106:36–38

Picture of Francis Schaeffer and his wife Edith from the 1930′s above. I was sad to read about Edith passing away on Easter weekend in 2013. I wanted to pass along this fine article below.

In Memory of Edith Schaeffer (1914-2013)

Francis and Edith Schaeffer are now together in paradise with their Lord and Savior, Jesus.  Edith died today and you can read the details here: Edith Schaeffer 1914-2013.

Francis and Edith Schaeffer

Pastor John Stoos of Church of the King Sacramento had the following to say,
“As most of you know, her husband Francis had a tremendous influence on my life as a young Christian and I have benefited from his discipleship down through these many years.  The writings and teaching of Edith were especially important and dear to my wife Linda!  We are now blessed to see her influence in the second and third generations of our family.  We miss them both very much and yet rejoice that they are now together with their Lord in paradise!”
Her work will continue to bless generation after generation of Christians who, like her, find shelter (French: l’abri) in the Lord.
Francis and Edith Schaeffer
I’ve posted a few quotes that you should share around on your blog, Twitter, Facebook, and in conversations to memorialize the life of a true Proverbs 31 woman.
Tradition as the Best Gift:

“There is something about saying, ‘We always do this,’ which helps keep the years together. Time is such an elusive thing that if we keep on meaning to do something interesting, but never do it, year would follow year with no special thoughtfulness being expressed in making gifts, surprises, charming table settings, and familiar, favorite food. Tradition is a good gift intended to guard the best gifts.”
The Homemaker:
“There needs to be a homemaker exercising some measure of skill, imagination, creativity, desire to fulfill needs and give pleasure to others in the family. How precious a thing is the human family. It it not worth some sacrifice in time, energy, safety, discomfort, work? Does anything come forth without work?”

From What is Family?

Made In the Image of God

“A Christian, who realizes he has been made in the image of the Creator God and is therefore meant to be creative on a finite level, should certainly have more understanding of his responsibility to treat God’s creation with sensitivity, and should develop his talents to do something to beautify his little spot on the earth’s surface.”

From The Hidden Art of Homemaking

On Prayer:

“We need to remind ourselves that although prayer is a very personal and private communication with God, pouring out our repentance and sorrow for sin, it is also to be a constant connection with God, an unbroken communication, a means of receiving assurance as to how to go on in this next hour in our work, and our means of receiving guidance. Prayer is also to be our means of receiving sufficient grace and strength to do what we are being guided to do. This reality is to be handed to the next generation, not to end when we die.”

From The Life Of Prayer

On Marriage:

“There is a mystical oneness God has made possible in the sexual relationship which belongs not to promiscuousness, but to a continuity in marriage, because it parallels the eternal oneness we have when we are united with the Lord.”

From A Celebration Of Marriage

God’s Children:

“God does not promise to treat each of his children the same in this life. God does not say that each one of his children will have the same pattern of living or follow the same plan. God is a God of diversity. God can make trees—but among the trees are hundreds of kinds of trees. God can make apples trees, but among the apples on that tree no two look identically alike. God is able to make snowflakes, and make each snowflake differently. God has a different plan for each of his children—but it all fits together.”

From Everyone Can Know: Family Devotions from the Gospel of Luke

Dr. Koop said, “We live in a schizophrenic society” and that makes me think of this cartoon:

(Francis did a great job in his film series “How Should we then live?” in looking at how humanism has affected art and culture in the Western World in the last 2000 years. My favorite episodes include his study of the Renaissance, the Revolutionary age, the age of Nonreason, and the age of Fragmentation.)

Obamacare’s sinking ship is sad to watch!!!

______

Oklahoma Doctors vs. Obamacare

Obamacare’s sinking ship is sad to watch!!!

The President’s main “accomplishment” has been such a disaster that I wonder whether it’s time to feel sorry for Obama.

And if you looked in the dictionary for a definition of Schadenfreude, you might find a picture of me reading a story exposing more evidence that Obamacare isn’t working.

Heck, I’ve even shared Hitler parody videos (two of them!) mocking the law.

But to paraphrase Mae West, there’s no such thing as too much of a good thing.

Today, we’re going to look at the opinions of two experts, both of whom expect further bad news for Obamacare.

Here’s some of what Michael Tanner, my Cato colleague, wrote for the New York Post.

…“the State of ObamaCare” is growing ever more troubled. For starters, it’s falling far short of the goal of universal coverage. …just 1.5 million have actually completed the ObamaCare checkout, including payment. Worse, surveys indicate that less than a third of those enrolling were previously uninsured. …Even using the most optimistic reading of these figures, fewer than 11 percent of uninsured Americans have gotten coverage because of the ObamaCare law; most likely, fewer. This is what we’re getting for the $2.7 trillion that ObamaCare will cost over the next 10 years? Plus, we should subtract the roughly 500,000 Americans who, by the White House’s own count, have lost insurance because of ObamaCare.

And Mike expects things will get worse over time.

…that’s just the tip of the iceberg, because those policy-killing rules will hit another part of the market over the course of this year — namely, the “small group” market, where employers now buy health policies that cover about 78 million Americans. Many of those with cancelled plans will ultimately end up with similar, if more expensive, employment-based policies, but some are likely to simply wind up uninsured. …Then there’s the bad news about who is enrolling in ObamaCare plans — or rather, who isn’t: not enough of the young and healthy folks that the program needs to overpay for insurance so as to offset the costs of covering older and sicker people. …Oh, and a Reuters survey finds that new enrollees are also less healthy than ObamaCare’s designers hoped, too. Humana, one of the nation’s largest insurers, reports that so far enrollment in its exchange-based plans has been far “more adverse than previously expected.”

Megan McArdle of Bloomberg is similarly unimpressed with how Obamacare has developed.

Enrollment is below expectations: According to the data we have so far, more than half of the much-touted Medicaid expansion came from people who were already eligible before the health-care law passed, and this weekend, the Wall Street Journal reported that the overwhelming majority of people buying insurance through the exchanges seem to be folks who already had insurance. Coverage is less generous than many people expected, with narrower provider networks and higher deductibles. The promised $2,500 that the average family was told they could save on premiums has predictably failed to materialize. And of course, we now know that if you like your doctor and plan, there is no reason to think you can keep them.

But it’s going to get worse, she writes.

The Barack Obama administration is in emergency mode, pasting over political problems with administrative fixes of dubious legality, just to ensure the law’s bare survival — which is now their incredibly low bar for “success.” Although the fixes may solve the short-term political problems, however, they destabilize the markets, which also need to work to ensure the law’s survival. The president is destroying his own law in order to save it.

The article has lots of detail, but here are a few highlights of the bad things that already have happened.

Obamacare’s exchange facility was conceived as a “three-legged stool”: guaranteed issue, community rating, mandate. …Take one away, and the whole thing is in danger of collapsing. Unfortunately, whenever someone has voiced discontent with the way things are going, the administration has taken a hacksaw to another leg. …some folks who had policies they liked before were being forced to drop them and buy new policies they didn’t like so much. That caused an outcry, followed by an emergency grandfathering rule. Other major emergency fixes include…A one-year delay of the employer mandate…Numerous extensions of enrollment and payment deadlines…Changes in the rules governing the “risk corridor” programs that cover excess losses at insurers.

And here are the bad things that Megan expects will happen in the future.

…the worst is yet to come. Here’s what’s ahead…2014: Small-business policy cancellations…Summer 2014: Insurers get a sizable chunk of money from the government to cover any excess losses. When the costs are published, this is going to be wildly unpopular…Fall 2014: New premiums are announced…2014 and onward: Medicare reimbursement cuts eat into hospital margins…Spring 2015: The Internal Revenue Service starts collecting individual mandate penalties…Spring 2015: The IRS demands that people whose income was higher than they projected pay back their excess subsidies…Spring 2015: Cuts to Medicare Advantage…Fall 2015: This is when expert Bob Laszewski says insurers will begin exiting the market if the exchange policies aren’t profitable…Fall 2017: Companies and unions start learning whether their plans will get hit by the “Cadillac tax,”…January 2018: The temporary risk-adjustment plans, which the administration is relying on to keep insurers in the marketplaces even if their customer pool is older and sicker than projected, run out…Fall 2018: Buyers find out that subsidy growth is capped for next year’s premiums…I expect that the administration is going to issue “temporary” administrative fixes for most of the law’s unpopular bits — just as it has so far. That’s not going to get any easier as midterms and then a presidential election creep closer.

Wow. If I was a Democrat politician, I would not be overly happy at that list – particularly since Obamacare already has caused several dozen involuntary retirements from Congress.

And if I was a partisan Republican, I would get down on my knees every day to give thanks because Chief Justice John Roberts was willing to disregard the Constitution to keep Obamacare alive.

But since I’m a humble policy wonk who simply wants to protect and restore economic liberty, I’m just glad that there’s growing recognition that Obamacare is a turkey that needs to be repealed. No wonder I’m getting more optimistic with each passing day.

Let’s close with a couple of new Obamacare cartoons.

Using an image that will cause many of us to wince, Glenn Foden manages to combine Obamacare and the NSA spying scandal.

Obamacare Cartoon Tampa 2

Hmmm…I think the images in this example of NSA humor is more pleasurable.

And here’s Henry Payne mixing Obamacare and movie awards.

Obamacare Cartoon Tampa 1

This post has focused on Obamacare’s failings, so let’s close with an acknowledgement that it’s hard to beat something with nothing.

That’s why reformers need to advocate the types of policies that would undo decades of intervention and re-introduce market forces to the healthcare system.

This video from Reason TV is  a great introduction to that topic.

8 Things to Watch for in the Farm Bill

and

December 9, 2013 at 5:22 pm

Federico Gambarini/dpa/picture-alliance/Newscom

Federico Gambarini/dpa/picture-alliance/Newscom

The House and Senate are working out differences between their farm bills. The following is a list of major questions to consider if the negotiators do come up with a farm bill (explained in this new report here):

  1. Will Congress continue to play politics with the farm bill by combining food stamps with farm programs? For political reasons, Congress has combined the food stamp and agriculture programs in a massive farm bill for years. The only way for real reform is to separate these programs into two bills. At the least, a new farm bill should stagger the programs’ reauthorization periods, effectively separating them and making later reform more likely.
  2. Will food stamp reform be fiscally responsible or irresponsible? Food stamp spending has been climbing for years, doubling between fiscal year (FY) 2000 and FY 2007 and then doubling again to about $80 billion by FY 2012. The growth is partly due to the recession but also due to bad policy. A farm bill that does not include even the House’s modest reductions would be fiscally irresponsible and would mean that the House rejected much-needed reforms.
  3. Will Congress continue to promote dependency instead of empowering Americans? A work requirement is central to food stamp reform. Able-bodied adults should be required to work, prepare for work, or at least look for work in exchange for receiving food stamps. This promotes self-sufficiency and human dignity.
  4. Will Congress turn a blind eye to food stamp abuses? Problematic loopholes are undermining the food stamp program. “Broad-based categorical eligibility,” for example, allows states to bypass asset tests for applicants. A loophole known as “Heat and Eat” lets states artificially boost the amount of food stamp benefits a household receives.
  5. Will Congress avoid dealing with controversial programs in the future? Most agriculture programs are authorized for five years. But the House bill extends the problematic sugar program and two other new agriculture programs for unspecified amounts of time. With no set reauthorization period, Congress is less likely to deal with these problematic programs in the future.
  6. Will taxpayers get stuck with massive liability while wealthy farmers receive almost unlimited protection? The amount of subsidies provided in the new shallow-loss and target-price programs are contingent on commodity prices. If prices collapse, taxpayers are on the hook, while farmers would enjoy almost unlimited risk protection. These programs should not be added to the farm bill. At a minimum, there needs to be a cost cap so taxpayers are not stuck with massive liability.
  7. Will Congress continue to artificially drive up food prices? While some in Congress want to spend more on food stamps, others are pushing policies that artificially drive up food prices. For example, the federal government restricts the amount of sugar sold in the country and limits imports, thus driving up sugar prices.
  8. Will Congress continue to make President Obama look fiscally responsible when it comes to reforming the costliest farm program, crop insurance? According to the Government Accountability Office, the average annual cost of crop insurance from 2000 to 2006 was $3.1 billion. It more than doubled to $7.6 billion per year from 2007 to 2012 and will increase to a projected $8.9 billion per year from 2013 to 2022. While President Obama is proposing a $12 billion cut to the program, both bills would drive up costs.

“Friedman Friday” Milton Friedman tells us why our government spends out money so foolishly

The 4 Ways to Spend Money by Milton Friedman

Uploaded by on Aug 26, 2006

1. You spend your own money on yourself.
2. You spend your own money on someone else.
3. You spend someone else’s money on yourself.
4. You spend someone else’s money on someone else.

___________

Will Rogers has a great quote that I love. He noted, “Lord, the money we do spend on Government and it’s not one bit better than the government we got for one-third the money twenty years ago”(Paula McSpadden Love, The Will Rogers Book, (1972) p. 20.)

We need a Balanced Budget Amendment today so we can limit the amount of money the federal government can spend. Why does the government spend our money so foolishly? Milton Friedman has the answer below.

Friedman’s Four Ways

By on 10.5.11 @ 6:08AM

Who’s spending whose money? That’s the crucial question.

Sometimes the explanation for vexing problems is clear as can be after you see it. A perfect example is an observation made by the late Milton Friedman in a 2004 interview with Fox News:

There are four ways to spend money. You can spend your own money on yourself. When you do that, why you really watch out for what you’re doing, and you try to get the most for your money. Then you can spend your own money on somebody else. For example, I buy a birthday present for someone. Well then, I’m not so careful about the content of the present, but I’m very careful about the cost. Then, I can spend somebody else’s money on myself. And if I spend somebody else’s money on myself, then I’m going to have a good lunch! Finally, I can spend somebody else’s money on somebody else. And if I spend somebody else’s money on somebody else, I’m not concerned about how much it costs, and I’m not concerned about what I get. And that’s government. And that’s close to 40 percent of our national income.

It would be nearly impossible to exaggerate how many of our current economic problems are explained by Friedman’s four ways of spending money. Think of the four ways in the order they’re presented as S1, S2, S3, and S4. As Friedman explains, the effectiveness of how money is spent declines inexorably as you move from S1 to S4.

The important demarcation line in ways money can be spent is between S2 and S3. In other words, the issue that matters most is your money versus someone else’s money. If you’re spending your own money on someone else, your spouse or children, for example, you still take the expenditure seriously. You still pay a price if you don’t look for bargains.

A new Gallup survey finds that “Americans believe, on average, that the federal government wastes 51 cents of every tax dollar, similar to a year ago, but up significantly from 46 cents a decade ago and from an average 43 cents three decades ago.” This is a good example of “the wisdom of crowds.” The trend shows that the crowd is wising up regarding the implications of gargantuan government.

The survey respondents are correct in their assessment of how government spends money, and you need go no further than Friedman’s distinctions of how to spend money in understanding the source of the problem.

My guess would be that many of the respondents would think the government doesn’t necessarily need to waste half the public’s money. The problem, however, is it’s the nature of the beast. Because of the realities Friedman refers to, the government will never be able to spend money as effectively as the private sector.

The problems associated with how the government spends money are not the result of who’s running the government. The problems are systemic. Unless government is seriously downsized, waste and inefficiency will remain problems no matter which party is in power.

The source of the problem can be further clarified by keeping in mind the observations of another economist, Steven Landsburg: “Most of economics can be summarized in four words: People respond to incentives.” (That’s the first sentence in his excellent book, The Armchair Economist.)

The incentives for spending money wisely and efficiently are simply too weak when it’s not your own money. It’s no skin off your nose if the benefits of the expenditure are a small fraction of the costs. When it’s your own funds being used, you will not only restrict your expenditures to things having more benefits than costs, you will choose the ones you think will have the highest ratio of benefits to costs.

When it’s your own money you’re spending, it costs you something when you spend it foolishly. That’s not to say that we never spend our own money foolishly, but it comes out of our own hides when we do. When we spend our own money foolishly, we’re left with less money to spend well. It’s a self-policing structure. Of course, your incentives are even stronger when you worked hard for the money in question.

When a politician or bureaucrat spends taxpayer money it’s treated essentially a freebie. It’s only natural that taxpayer money gets treated like monopoly money. Politicians and bureaucrats have virtually no incentive to care about the value of an expenditure or its cost. This is a profound disadvantage of public spending that will never, ever go away.

Contrary to the straw-man accusations of some liberals, conservatives do not advocate zero government expenditures. Conservatives definitely are not anarchists. Nevertheless, the inherent and inescapable inferiority of spending someone else’s money on someone else is a strong argument for minimizing the size of government. The public’s opinion that the amount of government waste has been increasing parallels the exponential growth of government.

The Solyndra fiasco is another recent confirmation of Friedman’s observations. Despite alarm bells going off, the Obama administration pushed the doomed endeavor forward. Why not? It wasn’t their money, after all. Because it has now becoming so notorious, it appears the administration may pay a political price. Nevertheless, half a billion dollars of taxpayer money has gone down a rat hole. Unfortunately, Solyndra is the rule, not the exception. Absurdly generous public employee pension plans are another predictable result of spending someone else’s money.

Friedman said that the fourth spending alternative is how we spend forty percent of GDP. He was, I think, referring only to budgetary expenditures. Forty percent is a lot. Unfortunately, it understates the full extent of the problem.

The vast regulatory apparatus of the government is basically a system of spending someone else’s money on someone else. It is estimated that government regulations currently cost the economy $1.7 trillion a year. For example, requiring a private business owner to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to comply with the American with Disabilities Act is a clear case of spending someone else’s money on someone else. Requiring a private business to spend a million dollars doing an “environmental impact report” is a clear example of spending someone else’s money on someone else. Spending a million dollars or more on an EIR, in fact, is an example of spending someone else’s money for no one and for nothing. Minimum wage laws likewise are a case of spending someone else’s money on someone else.

The billions of hours Americans spend each year preparing their tax returns is a case of spending someone else’s time on someone else. Time is money, as they say, and most people I know complain a lot more about a scarcity of time than they do of money.

When you spend your own money (or time) on yourself, or for your loved ones, the process is essentially self-regulating. The incentives are automatically aligned with waste minimization. When such incentives are not present, elaborate and complex systems of rules and artificial punishments must be put in their place. There can never be enough rules and regulations to match the effectiveness and elegance of the self-regulating market.

Funding Government by the Minute

Published on Mar 28, 2012

At the rate the federal government spends, it runs out of money on July 31. What programs should be cut to balance the budget and fund the government for the remaining five months of the year? Cutting NASA might buy two days; cutting the Navy could buy fifteen. It seems that balancing the budget may require more than just cutting government programs. What should be done?

It is sad to me that we can’t learn from history. So many european countries are so far down the socialist road that there is little economic growth and there is massive budget problems. Under Obama we are heading the same way as this cartoon demonstrates today on Dan Mitchell’s blog.

Too bad I didn’t have this Glenn Foden masterpiece when I did the political cartoonist contest last week.

I think it’s better than my previous favorite of his (about the “private sector doing fine”), and it’s thematically quite similar to the famous “European lemming” cartoon from Ramirez.

European Train Cartoon

One tiny correction, though. The Europeans aren’t socialists anymore. It’s more accurate to describe the policy in France, Italy, and elsewhere as cronyism, corporatism, or statism.

Though Thomas Sowell prefers to use an even harsher adjective when analyzing Obama’s approach.

What about providing some evidence that Obama’s making America more like Europe? Well, just check out the data from the latest Economic Freedom of the World annual report.

There are now six European nations that score above the United States, including two of my favorite places – Switzerland and Estonia!

It doesn’t justify his bad policies, but it’s worth noting that Obama’s merely continuing a bad trend that started under Bush.

Arkansas vs. Tennessee Men’s Basketball Highlights

Published on Jan 22, 2014

The University of Tennessee defeated Arkansas 81-74 in Thompson Boling Arena. Jordan McRae scored a season-high 34 points and Jeronne Maymon added 17 to lead the Vols to victory.

_________________

Cuonzo Martin was gracious in the post game press conference after the victory over Arkansas in Knoxville. I texted some of my Vol relatives and asked if they were watching the game. One nephew of mine is a UT student but he didn’t make it to the game that night. My son Hunter and I watched the game together. I predicted that we would lose by 15 and not be competitive but I was wrong and we had the lead  by 8 with about 10 minutes left, but we had a cold streak of making only one field goal in the last 8 minutes of the game. Also Tennessee hit 15 of their last 20 from the free throw line in the last 6 minutes while Arkansas only hit 11 foul shots the whole game.

I got pretty negative about this year’s team when I realized that if we lost to Tennessee that we would be 1-4 in the conference after losing to Georgia and Texas A&M recently plus losing to Florida when they did not have their best player and the game was in Fayetteville against the Gators!!!!

I still think that Mike Anderson will get it going next year but this year may be toast. My son Wilson thought we would win last night but that just did not happen. Tennessee has a special player in Stokes and if he stays next year then he may be really special!!!

Fouled Up – Razorbacks Lose in Tennessee

Fouled Up Razorbacks Lose in Tennessee

Knoxville, Tenn. – Despite becoming the first visiting team to score 70 points at Thompson-Boling Arena this season, Arkansas couldn’t fend off a late charge by Tennessee in an 81-74 SEC loss on Wednesday night.

The Vols’ second half run was led by senior Jordan McRae, who scored 24 of his season-high 34 points in the final frame. McRae’s 12-of-14 night at the free throw line was a large part of Tennessee out-scoring the Razorbacks 30-11 at the charity stripe, while getting there 21 more times.

Arkansas led by as many as eight, 63-55 (11:30), in the second half and even limited the Vols to just one made field goal over the final 8:18, but fell victim due to 15-of-20 shooting at the free throw line by the home team over the final 6:31.

With under three minutes to play and Arkansas holding a 68-66 lead, the Razorbacks were whistled for a flagrant-1 foul underneath the hoop in a halfcourt set. Tennessee took advantage of the foul, making both free throws and getting the ball to McRae on the ensuing in-bounds pass for a three that gave the Vols five points in a matter of six seconds.

The three-pointer following the flagrant foul was part of a critical 7-0 run that jump-started the Vols and McRae, as he scored the team’s final 13 points to secure Tennessee’s (12-6, 3-2) 10th home win of the year.

Senior Coty Clarke led Arkansas (12-6, 1-4) with 16 points, including 14 in the second half, and nine rebounds, while junior Rashad Madden (15), redshirt senior Fred Gulley III (11) and seniorKikko Haydar (10) all finished in double figures.

Keys To The Contest
Arkansas was whistled for 29 fouls compared to 15 on the Vols, leading to a 38-17 edge in foul shot attempts for Tennessee. The result was a commanding 30-11 edge in points that out-weighed the Razorbacks’ advantage in points in the paint (30-26), points off turnovers (20-17), second chance points (19-7), fast break points (10-4) and bench points (25-6).

“I thought our defense showed up again tonight. We were tough and active on defense and that also translated to the boards. The difference tonight was the number of fouls which resulted in a large amount of free throws for Tennessee. Give them credit because they went and knocked them down, but it certainly provided the difference.”

Open letter to President Obama (Part 503) “Slaves and unborn children both we did not recognize as humans” (includes reference to Dred Scott and the film THE BASIS FOR HUMAN DIGNITY and editorial cartoon)

Open letter to President Obama (Part 503)

(Emailed to White House on 4-24-13.)

I know that you don’t agree with my pro-life views but I wanted to challenge you as a fellow Christian to re-examine your pro-choice view.

I have debated with Ark Times Bloggers many times in the past on many different subjects. Abortion is probably the most often debated subject and I have noticed that many pro-life individuals are now surfacing on the Arkansas Times Blog.  Here are some examples. Arhogfan501 asserted: This is the beginning of the end for recreational abortion in Arkansas. Songbird777 noted: Babies have a right to live and not be chopped up for someone else’s convenience. The person using the username “baker” commented: Planned Parenthood (PPA) does not nor cannot provide mammograms, indeed no affiliate has the necessary license. PPA is an abortion provider and at some 900 plus killings a day rather prolific.

Here is another debate I got into recently on the Arkansas Times Blog and I go by the username “Saline Republican”:

Ruth Gluhareff Pianalto said on the Arkansas Times Blog on 3-22-13:

“This is just the beginning. Our rights, our freedoms are being violated. Choices made for women by the stroke of a pen that should be made by each woman, her family, her Doctor and her God are not Democracy….”

I responded:

How about the rights of the unborn women? Ruth Gluhareff Pianalto are you against gendercide? Gendercide is where the parents are told the sex of the child and if they don’t want that sex then they abort. (The vast majority of these abortions are done because parents want a boy!!!!!)

Rablib said, “Parents of born children are not required by law to give parts of their bodies, to the point of death, to keep their born children alive. Why should the parent of an unborn fetus be required to do so? That’s slavery of the worst kind.”
I responded:Who suggested that an expectant mother is expected to die because of her child? I am sure there is someone out there extreme enough to say that but why don’t you name that person before you make wild accusations!!!Since you brought up the issue of slavery then let me just say that just like the 1800’s in the USA and the 1930’s in Germany people tried to classify other humans as “nonhuman” and then they treated them like animals!! Now the Supreme Court has classified the unborn child as nonhuman.John Russell in his article “The Devaluing of Life in America,” states the following:Former Surgeon General C. Everett Koop and Christian apologist Francis A. Schaeffer issue a stern warning concerning the devaluing of life in America. They quote Psychiatrist Leo Alexander, who served with the office of Chief of Counsel for War Crimes in Nuremberg:It started with the acceptance of the attitude basic in the euthanasia movement, that there is such a thing as life not worthy to be lived…. …. The first direct order for euthanasia was issued by Hitler on Sept. 1, 1939…. All state institutions were required to report on patients who had been ill for five years or more or who were unable to work, by filling out questionnaires giving name, race, marital status, nationality, next of kin, whether regularly visited and by whom, who bore the financial responsibility and so forth. The decision regarding which patients should be killed was made entirely on the basis of this brief information by expert consultants, most of whom were professors of psychiatry in the key universities. These consultants never saw the patients themselves.

The Nazis set up an organization specifically for the killing of children, which they called, “Realm’s Committee for Scientific Approach to Severe Illness Due to Heredity and Constitution.” Children were transported to the killing centers by “The Charitable Transport Company for the Sick.” “The Charitable Foundation for Institutional Care” collected the cost of killing the children from the relatives, who did not know that they were paying to kill their own kinfolk. The cause of death was falsified on the death certificates. [Francis A. Schaeffer and C. Everett Koop, M.D., Whatever Happened to the Human Race? (Old Tappan, NJ: Fleming H. Revell Company, 1979), pp. 103-107].

IT HASN’T BEEN TOO FAR BACK IN THE HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES, THAT BLACK PEOPLE WERE SOLD LIKE CATTLE IN OUR SLAVE MARKETS. FOR ECONOMIC REASONS, WHITE SOCIETY HAD CLASSIFIED THEM AS “NONHUMAN.” THE U S SUPREME COURT UPHELD THIS LIE IN ITS FAMOUS DRED SCOTT DECISION.

______________

I truly believe that many of the problems we have today in the USA are due to the advancement of humanism in the last few decades in our society. Ronald Reagan appointed the evangelical Dr. C. Everett Koop to the position of Surgeon General in his administration. He partnered with Dr. Francis Schaeffer in making the video below. It is very valuable information for Christians to have.  Actually I have included a video below that includes comments from him on this subject.

Many liberals actually truly do argue for abortion rights over human rights. Prochoice advocate Elizabeth Williams came out and said that on 1-23-13 in her article on Salon. We hear reasons for abortion such as poverty, and  child abuse,  but why not consider adoption? Instead, the political left will stop at nothing to push the pro-abortion agenda. Why not stop and take an honest look at when life begins for the unborn child and when she begins to feel pain?

Yesterday we celebrated Ronald Reagan’s 102nd birthday. A little-known fact about President Reagan is that he is the only sitting president to have ever published a book—a book promoting the culture of life.

In Abortion and the Conscience of the Nation, published in 1983, Reagan explained what Roe had wrought for our nation:

The 10th anniversary of the Supreme Court decision in Roe v. Wade is a good time for us to pause and reflect. Our nationwide policy of abortion-on-demand through all nine months of pregnancy was neither voted for by our people nor enacted by our legislators—not a single state had such unrestricted abortion before the Supreme Court decreed it to be national policy in 1973. But the consequences of this judicial decision are now obvious: since 1973, more than 15 million unborn children have had their lives snuffed out by legalized abortions. That is over ten times the number of Americans lost in all our nation’s wars.

As we mourned the 40th anniversary of Roe last month, the number of American lives that have been ended at the hand of an abortionist has sadly grown to 55 million.

Reagan saw Roe for what it was, a travesty of law:

Make no mistake, abortion-on-demand is not a right granted by the Constitution. No serious scholar, including one disposed to agree with the Court’s result, has argued that the framers of the Constitution intended to create such a right. Shortly after the Roe v. Wade decision, Professor John Hart Ely, now Dean of Stanford Law School, wrote that the opinion “is not constitutional law and gives almost no sense of an obligation to try to be.” Nowhere do the plain words of the Constitution even hint at a “right” so sweeping as to permit abortion up to the time the child is ready to be born. Yet that is what the Court ruled.

Reagan encouraged pro-lifers not to lose hope:

Despite the formidable obstacles before us, we must not lose heart. This is not the first time our country has been divided by a Supreme Court decision that denied the value of certain human lives. The Dred Scott decision of 1857 was not overturned in a day, or a year, or even a decade. At first, only a minority of Americans recognized and deplored the moral crisis brought about by denying the full humanity of our black brothers and sisters; but that minority persisted in their vision and finally prevailed. They did it by appealing to the hearts and minds of their countrymen, to the truth of human dignity under God. From their example, we know that respect for the sacred value of human life is too deeply engrained in the hearts of our people to remain forever suppressed. But the great majority of the American people have not yet made their voices heard, and we cannot expect them to—any more than the public voice arose against slavery—until the issue is clearly framed and presented.

So what is the issue, clearly framed and presented? Reagan explained:

I have often said that when we talk about abortion, we are talking about two lives—the life of the mother and the life of the unborn child. Why else do we call a pregnant woman a mother? I have also said that anyone who doesn’t feel sure whether we are talking about a second human life should clearly give life the benefit of the doubt. If you don’t know whether a body is alive or dead, you would never bury it. I think this consideration itself should be enough for all of us to insist on protecting the unborn.

…

The real question today is not when human life begins, but, What is the value of human life? The abortionist who reassembles the arms and legs of a tiny baby to make sure all its parts have been torn from its mother’s body can hardly doubt whether it is a human being. The real question for him and for all of us is whether that tiny human life has a God-given right to be protected by the law—the same right we have.

As we honor President Reagan’s legacy, let us continue to work to build a culture of life.

The film “Whatever happened to the human race?” did a great job of comparing the dehumanizing efforts of the slave owners and those of today’s abortion advocates. Here is  a great cartoon that makes the same comparison:

Thank you so much for your time. I know how valuable it is. I also appreciate the fine family that you have and your commitment as a father and a husband. I also respect you for putting your faith in Christ for your eternal life. I am pleading to you on the basis of the Bible to please review your religious views concerning abortion. It was the Bible that caused the abolition movement of the 1800’s and it also was the basis for Martin Luther King’s movement for civil rights and it also is the basis for recognizing the unborn children.
