Open letter to President Obama (Part 617) Atheist Nat Hentoff turned pro-life after reviewing the evidence

Open letter to President Obama (Part 617)

(Emailed to White House on 6-12-13.)

President Obama c/o The White House 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW Washington, DC 20500

Dear Mr. President,

I know that you receive 20,000 letters a day and that you actually read 10 of them every day. I really do respect you for trying to get a pulse on what is going on out here. I know that you don’t agree with my pro-life views but I wanted to challenge you as a fellow Christian to re-examine your pro-choice view. Although we are both Christians and have the Bible as the basis for our moral views, I did want you to take a close look at the views of the pro-life atheist Nat Hentoff too.  Hentoff became convinced of the pro-life view because of secular evidence that shows that the unborn child is human. I would ask you to consider his evidence and then of course reverse your views on abortion.

___________________

Nat Hentoff is an atheist, but he became a pro-life activist because of the scientific evidence that shows that the unborn child is a distinct and separate human being and even has a separate DNA. His perspective is a very intriguing one that I thought you would be interested in. I have shared before many   cases (Bernard Nathanson, Donald Trump, Paul Greenberg, Kathy Ireland)    when other high profile pro-choice leaders have changed their views and this is just another case like those. I have contacted the White House over and over concerning this issue and have even received responses. I am hopeful that people will stop and look even in a secular way (if they are not believers) at this abortion debate and see that the unborn child is deserving of our protection. That is why the writings of Nat Hentoff of the Cato Institute are so crucial.

In the film series “WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE HUMAN RACE?” the arguments are presented  against abortion (Episode 1),  infanticide (Episode 2),   euthanasia (Episode 3), and then there is a discussion of the Christian versus Humanist worldview concerning the issue of “the basis for human dignity” in Episode 4 and then in the last episode a close look at the truth claims of the Bible.

I truly believe that many of the problems we have today in the USA are due to the advancement of humanism in the last few decades in our society. Ronald Reagan appointed the evangelical Dr. C. Everett Koop to the position of Surgeon General in his administration. He partnered with Dr. Francis Schaeffer in making the video below. It is very valuable information for Christians to have.  Actually I have included a video below that includes comments from him on this subject.

Blackballing Nat Hentoff

By Mark Judge

A couple weeks ago I got a call from Nat Hentoff. Hentoff, 86, is a legendary civil libertarian and journalist. He’s at the point is his career when he should just be sitting back and receiving lifetime achievement awards. But there’s one problem.

Nat Hentoff is pro-life. He had called from New York to thank me for some pro-life columns I had written. I was stunned; Hentoff is one of my favorite writers, and him reaching out is a tremendous honor. I’m a jazz fan and have been reading Hentoff’s columns for 25 years. (The man actually met Duke Ellington!) We talked about our jazz favorites, including my favorite singer Kurt Elling. Hentoff is still mentally sharp, even if he is doing physical therapy for various age-related issues.

Hentoff’s conversion from pro-choice to pro-life, and the fallout that resulted, is explained in an essay in the new book, The Debate Since Roe: Making the Case Against Abortion 1975-2010. It’s a compendium of essays from the journal Human Life Review.

A famous liberal who was a staple at the Village Voice and who had a column in the Washington Post, in the 1980s Hentoff actually let himself be swayed by evidence about abortion. It happened when Hentoff was reporting on the case of Baby Jane Doe.

Baby Jane Doe was a Long Island infant born with spina bifida and hydrocephalus, which is excess fluid in the cranium. With surgery, spina-bifida babies can grow up to be productive adults. Yet Baby Jane’s parents, on their doctor’s advice, had refused both surgery to close her spine and a shunt to drain the fluid from her brain. In resisting the federal government’s attempt to enforce treatment, the parents pleaded privacy.

As Hentoff told the Washington Times in a 1989 profile, his “curiosity was not so much the case itself but the press coverage.” Everyone on the media was echoing the same talking points about “women’s rights” and “privacy.”

“Whenever I see that kind of story, where everybody agrees, I know there’s something wrong,” Hentoff told the Times. says. “I finally figured out they were listening to the [parents’] lawyer.”

Hentoff dug into the case and the abortion industry at large, and what he found shocked him. He came across the published reports of experiments in what doctors at Yale-New Haven Hospital called “early death as a management option” for infants “considered to have little or no hope of achieving meaningful ‘humanhood.'” He talked with handicapped people who could have been killed by abortion.

Hentoff’s liberal friends didn’t appreciate his conversion: “They were saying, ‘What’s the big fuss about? If the parents had known she was going to come in this way, they would have had an abortion. So why don’t you consider it a late abortion and go on to something else? Here were liberals, decent people, fully convinced themselves that they were for individual rights and liberties but willing to send into eternity these infants because they were imperfect, inconvenient, costly. I saw the same attitude on the part of the same kinds of people toward abortion, and I thought it was pretty horrifying.”

The reaction from America’s corrupt fourth estate was instant. Hentoff, a Guggenheim fellow and author of dozens of books, was a pariah. Several of his colleagues at the Village Voice, which had run his column since the 1950s, stopped talking to him. When the National Press Foundation wanted to give him a lifetime achievement award, there was a bitter debate amongst members whether Hentoff should even be honored (he was). Then they stopped running his columns. You heard his name less and less. In December 2008, the Village Voice officially let him go.

When journalist Dan Rather was revealed to have poor news judgment, if not outright malice, for using fake documents to try and change the course of a presidential election, he was given a new TV show and a book deal — not to mention a guest spot on The Daily Show. The media has even attempted a resuscitation of anti-Semite Helen Thomas, who was recently interviewed in Playboy.

By accepting the truth about abortion, and telling that truth, Nat Hentoff may be met with silence by his peers when he goes to his reward. The shame will be theirs, not his.

Mark Judge is a columnist for RealClearReligion and author, most recently, of A Tremor of Bliss: Sex, Catholicism, and Rock ‘n’ Roll.

Thank you so much for your time. I know how valuable it is. I also appreciate the fine family that you have and your commitment as a father and a husband. Now after presenting the secular approach of Nat Hentoff I wanted to make some comments concerning our shared Christian faith.  I  respect you for putting your faith in Christ for your eternal life. I am pleading to you on the basis of the Bible to please review your religious views concerning abortion. It was the Bible that caused the abolition movement of the 1800’s and it also was the basis for Martin Luther King’s movement for civil rights and it also is the basis for recognizing the unborn children.

Open letter to President Obama (Part 616) IRS Cartoons

Open letter to President Obama (Part 616)

(Emailed to White House on 6-10-13.)

President Obama c/o The White House 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW Washington, DC 20500

Dear Mr. President,

I know that you receive 20,000 letters a day and that you actually read 10 of them every day. I really do respect you for trying to get a pulse on what is going on out here.

The federal government debt is growing so much that it is endangering us because if things keep going like they are now we will not have any money left for the national defense because we are so far in debt as a nation. We have been spending so much on our welfare state through food stamps and other programs that I am worrying that many of our citizens are becoming more dependent on government and in many cases they are losing their incentive to work hard because of the welfare trap the government has put in place. Other nations in Europe have gone down this road and we see what mess this has gotten them in. People really are losing their faith in big government and they want more liberty back. It seems to me we have to get back to the founding  principles that made our country great.  We also need to realize that a big government will encourage waste and corruption. The recent scandals in our government have proved my point. In fact, the jokes you made at Ohio State about possibly auditing them are not so funny now that reality shows how the IRS was acting more like a monster out of control. Also raising taxes on the job creators is a very bad idea too. The Laffer Curve clearly demonstrates that when the tax rates are raised many individuals will move their investments to places where they will not get taxed as much.

______________________

Will Rogers has a great quote that I love. He noted, “Lord, the money we do spend on Government and it’s not one bit better than the government we got for one-third the money twenty years ago”(Paula McSpadden Love, The Will Rogers Book, (1972) p. 20.)

We got to lower the size of government so we don’t have these abuses like this in the IRS.

Cartoonists v. the IRS

Call me perverse, but I’m enjoying this IRS scandal. It’s good to see them suffer a tiny fraction of the agony they impose on the American people.

I’ve already shared a couple of cartoons on the topic, and I also posted a photo from my newest sports hero that captures how most of us feel about the least-favorite part of the federal behemoth.

Now let’s enjoy some additional cartoons. Let’s start with one from Michael Ramirez, which appropriately mocks Obama for saying we shouldn’t fear the government.

IRS Cartoon 10

Here’s Henry Payne’s contribution, which reminds me that the IRS actuallyexpects us to believe they didn’t engage in political bias.

IRS Cartoon 9

And Ken Catalino suggests that the federal government treats Americans with the same suspicion and hostility accorded to terrorists.

IRS Cartoon 8

Though we should be happy that we’re not being targeted for drone attack. At least not yet.

Speaking of targeting, here’s another Catalino cartoon that recreates a meeting at the IRS.

IRS Cartoon 7

I like this Glenn Foden cartoon, if for no other reason that it would be nice to see taxpayers march on Washington to slay the IRS monster.

IRS Cartoon 6

Here’s another Foden cartoon, which I like because it has the same theme asthis Jerry Holbert cartoon, showing big government as a destructive and malicious force.

IRS Cartoon 5

These two Eric Allie cartoons (here and here) have a more charitable interpretation, implying that the damage is unintentional.

Here’s another gem from Ramirez, winner of my cartoonist contest.

IRS Cartoon 4

Lisa Benson weighs in with a cartoon on the army of drones. Sort of like this very good Glenn McCoy cartoon.

IRS Cartoon 3

Here’s another cartoon from Henry Payne, showing Obama’s faux scolding of the IRS.

IRS Cartoon 2

Last but not least, this Chuck Asay cartoon may be the best of the bunch. When we get in trouble with the IRS (even if we’ve done nothing wrong), we’re guilty ’til we prove ourselves innocent.

Too bad we can’t exercise our rights, just like the IRS hack who just pleaded the fifth and refused to answer questions about her role in the scandal.

IRS Cartoon 1

Now that I’ve shared all these cartoons, let’s remember that we should assign some of the blame to politicians.

And I’m not referring to the President and the culture of corruption and Chicago-style sleaze that seems to be engulfing the Obama Administration.

I’m talking about the constant legislative tinkering and the 74,000 pages of Byzantine complexity that has been created in the 100 years since the income tax was created.

However, there are many reasons why the IRS bureaucracy deserves scorn.

So let’s pass the flat tax, but never forget that a disproportionate share of bad people seem drawn to government.

I love the works of Francis Schaeffer and I have been on the internet reading several blogs that talk about Schaeffer’s work and the work below   was really helpful. Schaeffer’s film series “How should we then live?  Wikipedia notes, “According to Schaeffer, How Should We Then Live traces Western history from Ancient Rome until the time of writing (1976) along three lines: the philosophic, scientific, and religious.[3] He also makes extensive references to art and architecture as a means of showing how these movements reflected changing patterns of thought through time. Schaeffer’s central premise is: when we base society on the Bible, on the infinite-personal God who is there and has spoken,[4] this provides an absolute by which we can conduct our lives and by which we can judge society.  Here are some posts I have done on this series: Francis Schaeffer’s “How should we then live?” Video and outline of episode 10 “Final Choices” , episode 9 “The Age of Personal Peace and Affluence”, episode 8 “The Age of Fragmentation”, episode 7 “The Age of Non-Reason” , episode 6 “The Scientific Age” ,  episode 5 “The Revolutionary Age” , episode 4 “The Reformation”,  episode 3 “The Renaissance”, episode 2 “The Middle Ages,”, and  episode 1 “The Roman Age,” .

From 1943 to 1947, he pastored           First Bible Presbyterian Church in St. Louis, MO, and served as moderator           of the Midwest Presbytery [BPC].
During this time Schaeffer and his wife founded the Children for Christ           ministry in St. Louis, which soon became widely adopted by other evangelical           churches. In 1947 he traveled throughout Europe as a representative           of the Independent Board for Presbyterian Foreign Missions and as the           American Secretary for the Foreign Relations Department of the American           Council of Christian Churches. In 1948 he moved with his family to Lausanne,           Switzerland to begin mission work, and moved the following year to Champery,           Switzerland, where he wrote Basic Bible Studies.
In 1953 he returned to the United States on furlough and began an extensive           speaking tour. He was awarded an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree           in 1954 by Highland College in Long Beach, CA. Later that same year,           he returned to Switzerland and moved to Huemoz, Switzerland. By 1955           he had resigned from the mission board and began L’Abri Fellowship,           which became the primary focus of his life. In 1971 he received the           honorary Doctor of Letters degree from Gordon College, Wenham, MA.
Work began in 1974 on the book and film versions of one of his more           well-known works, How Shall We Then Live?, during which time           he also helped to found the International Council on Biblical Inerrancy.           The film series Whatever Happened to the Human Race? was also           underway by 1977. Dr. Schaeffer was diagnosed with lymphoma cancer in           1978, which made necessary a move of the American headquarters of L’Abri           to Rochester, MN to better allow for the continued conducting of seminars           on both film series while undergoing chemotherapy treatments at the           Mayo Clinic.
In 1981 he reedited and pubished The Complete Works of Francis Schaeffer.           The Simon Greenleaf School of Law awarded him an honorary Doctor           of Laws degree in 1983, but he was forced to return in critical condition           from Switzerland to the Mayo Clinic. Despite the debilitating illness,           he was able in 1984 to complete The Great Evangelical Disaster and           a seminar tour. On May 15, 1984, he died at his home in Rochester, MN           and was buried at Oakwood Cemetary in Rochester.

“We Don’t Have Forever,”         by Dr. Francis A. Schaeffer:
The following transcript was recently provided by the courtesy         of Jeff Lawrence of Montgomery, AL. It originally was printed in the PCA         Messenger in 1980:

(Francis A. Schaeffer, founder of the L’Abri Fellowship,         author of 21 books, and principal in the “How Should We Then Live?”         and “Whatever Happened to the Human Race?” film-seminar series,         was the featured speaker at the 1980 “Consultation on Presbyterian         Alternatives” sponsored by the Presbyterian Church in America. His         counsel, excerpted here from the full transcript of his Pittsburgh messages,         was heard by participants from several Presbyterian communions.)

Two biblical principles must be practiced simultaneously,         at each step of the way, if we are to be really Bible-believing Christians.          One is the principle of the practice of the purity of the visible church.          The other is the principle of an observable love among all true Christians.

Those of us who left the old Presbyterian Church USA (the         “Northern” Church) 44 years ago made mistakes which marked the         movement for years to come.  The second principle often was not practiced.         In particular we often failed to manifest an observable love for the fellow         believers who stayed in that denomination when others of us left.

Things were said which are very difficult to forget even         more than 40 years later.  The periodicals of those who left tended to         spend more time attacking the real Christians who stayed in the old denomination         than in dealing with the liberals.  Those who came out at times refused         to pray with those who had not come out.  Many who left totally broke         off all forms of fellowship with true brothers in Christ who did not come         out.

What was destroyed was Christ’s command to love each other.          And what was left was often a turning inward, a self-righteousness, a         hardness, and, too often, a feeling that withdrawal had made those who         came out so right that anything they did could be excused.

Further, having learned these bad habits, they later treated         each other badly when the new groups had minor differences among themselves.

We cannot stress both of the principles simultaneously         in the flesh.  Sometimes we stress purity without love.  Or we can stress         love without purity.  In order to stress both simultaneously we must look         moment to moment to the work of Christ and to the work of the Holy Spirit.          Without this, a stress on purity becomes hard, proud, and legalistic.          Without this, a stress on love becomes compromise. Spirituality begins         to have real meaning in our lives as we begin to exhibit (and the emphasis         here is on exhibit, not just talk) simultaneously the holiness of God         and the love of God.  Without our exhibition of both, our marvelous God         and Lord is not set forth.  Rather, a caricature is set forth and He is         dishonored.

We paid a terrible price for what happened in those early         days.  As some of you now come out of your denominations, please do learn         from our mistakes.  Each pastor, each congregation must be led by the         Holy Spirit.  If some disappoint you, do not turn bitter.

One of the joys of my life occurred at the Lausanne Congress         (the 1974 International Congress on World Evangelization in Lausanne,         Switzerland). Some men from the newly formed Presbyterian Church in America         asked me to attend a meeting they and others had called there. When I         arrived I found that it was made up of Southern men who had just left         the Presbyterian Church US to form the PCA and some Christians who were         still in the PCUS. Someone from each side spoke. Both said to me that         the meeting was possible because of my voice and especially my little         book, The Church Before the Watching World (published by InterVarsity         Press). I must say I could have wept, and perhaps I did. It is possible         for us to do better than we would naturally do. It is not possible if         we ignore the fleshly dangers and fail to look to our living Lord for         his strength and grace.

Those of us who left our old denomination in the Thirties         had another great problem, as I see it. It was confusion over where to         place the basic chasm which marks off who we are. Does that chasm mark         us as those who are building Bible-believing churches and that on this         side of the chasm we hold the distinctives of being Presbyterian and Reformed?         Or is the primary chasm that we are Presbyterian and Reformed and that         we are divided from all who are not? The answer makes a great deal of         difference.

When we go to a town to start a church, are we going there         with the primary motivation to build a church which is loyal to Presbyterians         and the Reformed faith, or are we going there to build a church which         will preach the Gospel which historic, Bible-believing Christianity holds,         and then on this side of that chasm teach that which we believe is true         to the Bible in regard to church government and doctrine? The difference         makes a difference to our mentality, to our motivation, and to the breadth         of our outreach. I must say, to me one view is catholic, biblical and         gives good promise of success; the other is introverted and self-limiting,         yes, and sectarian. I spoke of a good promise of success. I mean on two         levels: First in church growth and a healthy outlook among those we reach;         second, in providing leadership in the whole church of Christ.

We alone do not face this problem of putting the chasm         at the wrong place, of course. A too zealous mentality on the Lutheran         view of the sacraments is the same. A too sectarian mentality in regard         to the mode of baptism is another. The zeal of the Plymouth Brethren for         an unpaid ministry is often the same. No, it is not just our problem.         But it is our problem. To put the chasm in the wrong place is to fail         to fulfill our calling, and I am convinced that when we do so we displease         our Lord.

Those who remain in the old-line churches have their own         set of problems. In contrast to the problem of hardness to which those         who withdraw are prone, those who remain are likely to develop a general         latitudinarianism. One who accepts ecclesiastical latitudinarianism easily         steps into a cooperative latitudinarianism which can become a doctrinal         latitudinarianism and especially a letdown on a clear view of Scripture.

This is what happened in certain segments of what I would         call the evangelical establishment. Out of the evangelical latitudinarianism         of the Thirties and Forties grew the letdown in regard to the Scripture         in certain areas of the evangelical structure in the Seventies. Large         sections of evangelicalism today put all they can into acting as though         it makes no real difference as to whether we hold the historic view of         Scripture or the existential view. The existential methodology says that         the Bible is authoritative when it teaches “religious” things but         not when it touches that which is historic, scientific, or such things         as the male/female relationship.

Not all who have stayed in the liberal denominations have         done this, by any means, but it is hard to escape.  I don’t see how those         who have chosen to stay in (no matter what occurs) can escape a latitudinarian         mentality which will struggle to paper over the differences on Scripture         in order to keep an external veneer of unity.  That veneer in fact obscures         a real lack of unity on the crucial point of Scripture.  And when the         doctrinal latitudinarianism sets in we can be sure from all of church         history and from observation in our own period of church history that         in just a generation or two the line between evangelical and liberal will         be lost.

This is already observable in that the liberals largely         have shifted to the existential methodology and have expressed great approval         that the “moderate evangelicals” have done so.  The trend will         surely continue.  Unless we see the new liberalism with its existential         methodology as a whole, and reject it as a whole, we will, to the extent         to which we tolerate it, be confused in our thinking.  Failure to reject         it will also involve us in the general relativism of our day and compromising         in our actions.

The second major problem of those who stay in the liberally         controlled denominations is the natural tendency to constantly move back         the line at which the final stand will be taken.  For example, can you         imagine Clarence Macartney, Donald Grey Barnhouse or T. Roland Phillips         being in a denomination in which the baffle line was the ordination of         women?  Can you imagine these great evangelical preachers of the Twenties         and Thirties (who stayed in the Presbyterian Church USA) now being in         a denomination which refuses to ordain a young man whose only fault was         that while he said he would not preach against the ordination of women         yet he would not say he had changed his mind that it was unbiblical? Can         you imagine that these leaders of the conservative cause in an earlier         era would have considered it a victory to have stalled the ordination         of practicing homosexuals and practicing lesbians?  What do you think         Macartney, Barnhouse, and Phillips would have said about these recent         developments?  Such a situation in their denomination would never have         been in their minds as in the realm of conceivable.

The line does move back.  In what presbytery of the Northern         Presbyterian Church can you bring an ordained man under biblical discipline         for holding false views of doctrine and expect him to be disciplined?

Beware of false victories.  Even if a conservative man         is elected moderator of the general assembly (as Macartney was in 1924),         it would amount to absolutely nothing.  Despite the jubilation among conservatives         at Macartney’s election, the bureaucracy simply rolled on, and not too         many years later conservative leader J. Gresham Machen could be unfrocked.          Nelson Bell was elected moderator of the Southern Church later (in 1972),         and nothing changed.  The power centers of the bureaucracy and the liberally-controlled         seminaries were unmoved.

There are always those who say, “don’t break up our         ranks … wait a while longer … wait for this … wait for that.”         It is always wait.  Never act. But 40 years is a long time to wait when         things are always and consistently getting worse.  And (with my present         health problem) I tell you soberly, we do not have forever to take that         courageous and costly stand for Christ that we sometimes talk about. We         do not have forever for that. We hear many coaxing words, but watch for         the power structure to strike out when it is threatened. If the liberals’         power is really in danger or if they fear the loss of property, watch         out!

What of the future? We live in a day that is fast-moving.          The United States is moving at great speed toward totally humanistic orientation         in society and state.  Do you think this will leave our own little projects,         our own church, and our own lives untouched?  Don’t be silly. The warnings         are on every side. When a San Francisco Orthodox Presbyterian congregation         can be dragged into court for breaking the law of discrimination because         it dismissed an avowed, practicing homosexual as an organist, can we be         so blind as to not hear all the warning bells go off?  When by a ruling         of a federal court the will of Congress can be overturned concerning the         limitation on the willful killing of unborn children, should not the warning         bells go off as to the kind of pressures ahead of us?

Who supports these things?  The liberal denominations         do, publicly, formally, and financially.  And it puts into a vise those         of us who stand for biblical morality, let alone doctrine.  Beyond the         denominations, it is their councils of churches that support not only         these things but also terrorist groups. They give moral support and money.          Should we support this by our denominational affiliation? We may seem         isolated from the results for a time but that is only because we are too         blind to see.

I don’t think we have a lot of time.  The hour is very         late, but I don’t think it is too late in this country. This is not a         day of retreat and despair.  In America it is still possible to turn things         around.  But we don’t have forever.

Memorial         for Dr. Schaeffer, from the Minutes of Missouri Presbytery (PCA), July         20, 1984:

FRANCIS A. SCHAEFFER
Whereas the Lord in His great wisdom and mercy has               seen fit to take our beloved brother, Francis A. Schaeffer to Himself               on May 15th, 1984, after a rather lengthy illness, andWhereas Dr. Schaeffer has been a member of this Presbytery longer             than any other member, andWhereas his ministry of evangelism and church building,               together with his defence of the historic Christian faith, and his               unceasing efforts to strengthen and preserve the biblical foundations               of our culture have not only resulted in the salvation of many souls,               but have been an inestimable blessing to multitudes of men and women               and have earned him a world-wide reputation as a valiant and effective               Christian philosopher and theologian, andWhereas he has unstintingly given of himself in               the latter part of his life to the fight against the monstrous evils               of abortion, infanticide and euthanasia, so much as that many have               been emboldened to join the battle for the sanctity of life, andWhereas his many books have left behind him a rich               treasure of teaching which will be a part of the permanent heritage               of the Christian Church,

BE IT RESOLVED that the Presbytery of Missouri,               meeting at Covenant Presbyterian Church of St. Louis on July 20,               1984, express its profound gratitude to God for the life and ministry               of Dr. Francis A. Schaeffer, and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this memorial resolution               be spread upon the Minutes of the Presbytery of Missouri as a reminder               to all members of the Presbytery to remember to continue to thank               God for the inspiration and blessing we have received from Dr. Schaeffer’s               life and work.

Avril Lavigne is the upcoming self-titled fifth studio album by Canadian singer-songwriter Avril Lavigne. The album is scheduled to be released on November 1, 2013 by Epic Records and is the follow-up to her fourth studio album, Goodbye Lullaby (2011).

Background and release

Three months after the release of Goodbye Lullaby, Lavigne announced that work on her fifth studio album had already begun, with eight songs written so far. Lavigne stated that the album would musically be the opposite of Goodbye Lullaby, with a release date rumoured for sometime in 2012.[1] Lavigne explained, “Goodbye Lullaby was more mellow, [but] the next one will be pop and more fun again. I already have a song that I know is going to be a single, I just need to re-record it!”[2][3][4] In late 2011, Lavigne confirmed that she had moved to Epic Records, which is now headed by L.A. Reid.

Recording sessions began in November 2011, and took place over a period of almost two years, concluding in July 2013. The lead single “Here’s to Never Growing Up” was released on 9 April 2013; reaching the top twenty in the United States, Canada, Australia and United Kingdom, and the top ten in Ireland and Japan. Lavigne premiered the second single “Rock N Roll” on 18 July 2013,[5] the song itself was released on 27 August, with the music video premiering a week earlier on 20 August, the song has been one of her least successful singles in the US, charting only at No. 91 of Billboard Hot 100, top 5 in Japan and South Korea.[6] It was announced in July 2013 that the album would be released on 24 September 2013, but recently another date has been announced, 5 November 2013 and later confirmed.[7][8]

On 8 August 2013, Lavigne revealed the cover art for the album via her Instagram account.[9] In a recent interview at the radio station 99.5 The River, Lavigne confirmed that her new album will be available to pre-order on 24 September 2013 and will be released later on 5 November.[10] The official track listing was later revealed on 5 September. Three snippets leaked on Soundcloud, “Give You What You Like”, “Let Me Go (featuring Chad Kroeger)” and “Sippin’ On Sunshine” [11][12]

Recording

Lavigne in New York, May 2013.

In November 2011, Lavigne stated that she entered the studio to start recording new songs for the album.[13] In April 2012, Lavigne confirmed that she had “finally” finished work on her fifth album and that she would be taking a short hiatus before releasing it and embarking on “[her] next artistic journey”. On 17 August 2012, Lavigne began finalizing work on her fifth album by starting the mixing process and laying down last minute ad-libs and backing vocals, before completely wrapping up production two days later on 19 August 2012. She then returned to the studio, despite previously wrapping up production.

All of the thirteen tracks on the album have been confirmed; including the second single from the album, “Rock N Roll“, which Lavigne premiered on 18 July 2013. “Here’s to Never Growing Up”, which was co-written with Chad Kroeger; a duet with Kroeger called “Let Me Go” which is the third single;[14] a duet with Marilyn Manson titled “Bad Girl”; “Seventeen”, which was debuted at a surprise performance at The Viper Room in Los Angeles [15][16], and leaked later on Youtube. “Hello Kitty”, an “aggressive” song about the fictional Japanese character, which Lavigne describes as “kind of glitchy, electronic”;[17] “Hush Hush” and “Give You What You Like”, which Lavigne revealed were her favorite tracks from the album.

Because Lavigne had written so many songs for her fifth album, Lavigne was considering releasing two back-to-back albums,[18] however, thirteen tracks (but a deluxe version is probably going to be released), though as of mid-September 2013, the confirmation of one album has proven otherwise.

Singles

On 9 April 2013, the album’s lead single “Here’s to Never Growing Up“, produced by Martin Johnson of the band Boys Like Girls, was released.[19] Chart-wise, the track peaked at #20 on Billboard Hot 100 in the US, as well as the Top 20 in Australia and the UK and the Top 10 in Ireland and Japan. A lyric video featuring submitted photographs of fans “never growing up” was released onto Lavigne’s official VEVO account the same day as the release of the single.[20] The song’s official music video was later release on 9 May 2013.[21]

The second single “Rock N Roll” premiered on Lavigne’s official YouTube channel on 18 July 2013 and was released on 27 August.[22] The track “Let Me Go” featuring Chad Kroeger was confirmed as the album’s third single. It premiered on the radio station KBIG on 7 October 2013[23] and later released onto iTunes on 15 October.[24]

Live performances

On 3 August 2013, Lavigne performed in Guangzhou, China and later performed at Wham Bam Music Festival on 31 August. Lavigne attended to iHeartRadio Music Festival in Las Vegas on 23 September, performing some of her old and new singles and she introduced Zedd.

Lavigne performed “Girlfriend” and “Here’s to Never Growing Up” on 8 October 2013 in Huading Awards, China. She also won the award of Best Global Singer by Huading Awards against Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga, Justin Timberlake and Madonna.

Open letter to President Obama (Part 615) Dr. Gosnell Trial has prompted Texas authorities to take closer look a Houston abortionist

Open letter to President Obama (Part 615)

(Emailed to White House on 5-17-13.)

___________________

Many in the world today are taking a long look at the abortion industry because of the May 14, 2013 guilty verdict and life term penalty handed down by a jury (which included 9 out of 12 pro-choice jurors)  to Dr. Kermit Gosnell. During this time of reflection I wanted to put forth some of the pro-life’s best arguments.

Authorities in Texas are now paying attention to serious allegations against a Houston abortionist.

Earlier this week, OneNewsNow reported on the release of a video interview by Life Dynamics with three former employees of Houston abortionist Douglas Karpen describing apparently illegal late-term abortions, and babies born alive during abortions who were killed.

In that 14-minute video interview, one of three employees stated: “When he did an abortion – especially an over-20-week abortion – most of the time the fetus would come completely out before he would either cut the spinal cord or he introduced one of the instruments into the soft spot.” (Caution: Video contains very graphic material)

Troy Newman of Operation Rescue says Harris County authorities have stated they are now looking into the allegations.

Newman

“These state officials – if they truly believe that what we’re saying is true or they are actually going to do the proper investigation – then they should be seizing assets, they should be getting search warrants, they should be going into that facility and doing a proper investigation before all of the evidence is destroyed,” says the pro-life leader.

Operation Rescue has released photos of babies believed to have been born alive and their throats cut to kill them.

“The clinic was despicable,” Newman shares. “In fact, on one occasion – it was very well documented – the sewer line broke and, just like [at the clinic for abortionist] Kermit Gosnell, you had babies’ body parts spewing out from the sewer… little arms and legs and so forth.”

The medical board, which had received the evidence before, took no action but is aware of the latest reports. Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst has demanded an investigation.

“Schaeffer Sunday” Abortion debating with Ark Times Bloggers Part 8 “Dr. John Russell:Treatment of preborn compared to slaves’ treatment” (includes the film THE BASIS FOR HUMAN DIGNITY and editorial cartoon)

I have debated with Ark Times Bloggers many times in the past on many different subjects. Abortion is probably the most often debated subject and I have noticed that many pro-life individuals are now surfacing on the Arkansas Times Blog.  Here are some examples. Arhogfan501 asserted: This is the beginning of the end for recreational abortion in Arkansas. Songbird777 noted: Babies have a right to live and not be chopped up for someone else’s convenience. The person using the username “baker” commented: Planned Parenthood (PPA) does not nor cannot provide mammograms, indeed no affiliate has the necessary license. PPA is an abortion provider and at some 900 plus killings a day rather prolific.

Here is another debate I got into recently on the Arkansas Times Blog and I go by the username “Saline Republican”:

The person using the username “Bluesyoucanuse” asserted:

First protest I’ve been involved in in probably 30 years. Glad to say I was there. Glad to see the huge range of ages. Loved the family with the t-shirts — Mom by Choice, Dad by Choice, Born by Choice. Personal favorite sign — “If you don’t want an abortion, don’t have one.”

I responded:

Bluesyoucanuse says “Born by Choice.”

This follows the statements “Dad by choice and Mom by choice.”

I can only wish that unborn babies could be born if they chose to be. Unfortunately their parents choose selfishly to end their hopes of being born way too often.

Bluesyoucanuse was born not by her choice. It was not possible, but I am glad her parents made the prolife choice!!!!!!!!!

_________

Bluesyoucanuse says, “If you don’t want an abortion, don’t have one.”

Deanna Gandler responded to this question with this reasoned response:

What if Abraham Lincoln had told the North – ‘Don’t like Slavery? Don’t own slaves.’?”

Slavery was the defining issue of the day during that time period, and there were many citizens in America who truly believed that an African American was not a person, but a belonging, a piece of property to be disposed of as their owners saw fit. The Supreme Court of the United States had even ruled in the Dred Scott case that they were property and not citizens. The Supreme Court chose to uphold slavery, and claimed Constitutional authority in their decision.

Much like the Dred Scott ruling was overturned by the refusal of brave men and women in our country to merely turn a blind eye to the injustice going on all around them- the unconstitutional Roe v Wade can be overturned one day as well. But we must not give up on this fight. We must follow the example of Lincoln, and continue to fight for the rights of our fellow man.

“Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.”
Abraham Lincoln, in The Gettysburg Address

______

I truly believe that many of the problems we have today in the USA are due to the advancement of humanism in the last few decades in our society. Ronald Reagan appointed the evangelical Dr. C. Many liberals actually truly do argue for abortion rights over human rights. Prochoice advocate Elizabeth Williams came out and said that on 1-23-13 in her article on Salon. We hear reasons for abortion such as poverty, and  child abuse,  but why not consider adoption? Instead, the political left will stop at nothing to push the pro-abortion agenda. Why not stop and take an honest look at when life begins for the unborn child and when she begins to feel pain?

Dr. John Russell:

The Devaluing of Life in America

Former Surgeon General C. Everett Koop and Christian apologist Francis A. Schaeffer issue a stern warning concerning the devaluing of life in America. They quote Psychiatrist Leo Alexander, who served with the office of Chief of Counsel for War Crimes in Nuremberg:

It started with the acceptance of the attitude basic in the euthanasia movement, that there is such a thing as life not worthy to be lived….   …. The first direct order for euthanasia was issued by Hitler on Sept. 1, 1939…. All state institutions were required to report on patients who had been ill for five years or more or who were unable to work, by filling out questionnaires giving name, race, marital status, nationality, next of kin, whether regularly visited and by whom, who bore the financial responsibility and so forth. The decision regarding which patients should be killed was made entirely on the basis of this brief information by expert consultants, most of whom were professors of psychiatry in the key universities. These consultants never saw the patients themselves.

The Nazis set up an organization specifically for the killing of children, which they called, “Realm’s Committee for Scientific Approach to Severe Illness Due to Heredity and Constitution.” Children were transported to the killing centers by “The Charitable Transport Company for the Sick.” “The Charitable Foundation for Institutional Care” collected the cost of killing the children from the relatives, who did not know that they were paying to kill their own kinfolk. The cause of death was falsified on the death certificates. [Francis A. Schaeffer and C. Everett Koop, M.D., Whatever Happened to the Human Race? (Old Tappan, NJ: Fleming H. Revell Company, 1979), pp. 103-107].

It hasn’t been too far back in the history of the United States, that black people were sold like cattle in our slave markets. For economic reasons, white society had classified them as “nonhuman.” The U S Supreme Court upheld this lie in its infamous Dred Scott Decision.

Jesse L. Jackson, in 1977, tied the prior treatment of blacks with our present treatment of the preborn:

You could not protest the existence or treatment of slaves on the plantation because that was private and therefore outside your right to be concerned…. The Constitution called us three-fifths human and the whites further dehumanized us by calling us `niggers.’ It was part of the dehumanizing process…. These advocates taking life prior to birth do not call it killing or murder, they call it abortion. They further never talk about aborting a baby because that would imply something human…. Fetus sounds less than human and therefore can be justified…. What happens to the mind of a person, and the moral fabric of a nation, that accepts the aborting of the life of a baby without a pang of conscience? What kind of a person and what kind of a society will we have twenty years hence if life can be taken so casually? It is that question, the question of our attitude, our value system, and our mind set with regard to the nature and the worth of life itself that is the central question confronting mankind. Failure to answer that question affirmatively may leave us with a hell right here on earth. [Francis A. Schaeffer and C. Everett Koop, M.D., Whatever Happened to the Human Race? (Old Tappan, NJ: Fleming H. Revell Company, 1979), p. 209.]

Twenty-five years after Rev. Jackson’s prediction, we have seen 45,000,000 preborn children killed for convenience and money. There is no telling how many newborns have been sedated and deliberately left to die of starvation.

For a former “insider” expose of the brutal and woman-exploiting abortion industry, read Carol Everett’s book, Blood Money (Sisters, OR: Multnomah Press Books, 1992). Her book tore at my heart. It spoke of how degenerate a part of the medical community had become. Carol Everett later found Christ and now ministers hope and healing.

The infamous pathologist Jack Kevorkian has grabbed headlines by murdering sick people. But, secretly in the hospitals, how many old and sick people have been “put to sleep” by other physicians simply by administering an overdose of medication, or by withholding needed medication?

I was touched, influenced and inspired by the ideas of Bill Bennett. See William J. Bennett, The De-Valuing of America—The Fight for Our Culture and Our Children (New York: Simon and Schuster, 1992).

It is a sad fact that so many unborn babies have been aborted in the last 40 years and this editorial cartoon touches on that fact:

“Sanctity of Life Saturday” Atheist Nat Hentoff turned pro-life after reviewing the evidence

“Friedman Friday” FREE TO CHOOSE “Who protects the consumer?” Video and Transcript Part 1 of 7 Milton Friedman: “Allowing the free market to work is the best thing for consumers”

In 1980 I read the book FREE TO CHOOSE by Milton Friedman and it really enlightened me a tremendous amount.  I suggest checking out these episodes and transcripts of Milton Friedman’s film series FREE TO CHOOSE: “The Failure of Socialism” and “What is wrong with our schools?”  and “Created Equal”  and  From Cradle to Grave, and – Power of the Market.

From the original Free To Choose series Milton asks: “Who Protects the Consumer?”. Many government agencies have been created for this purpose, yet they do so by restricting freedom and stifling beneficial innovation, and eventually become agents for the groups they have been created to regulate.

Allowing the free market to work is the best thing for consumers. Milton Friedman noted, “Over a quarter of a century ago, I bought, second hand, a desk calculator for which I paid $300. One of these little calculators today which I can buy for $10 or so, will do everything that did and more besides. What produced this tremendous improvement in technology? It was self-interest or if your prefer, greed. The greed of producers who wanted it to produce something that they can made a dollar on. The greed of consumers who wanted to buy things as cheaply as they could. Did government play a role in this? Very little. Only by keeping the road clear for human greed and self-interest to promote the welfare of the consumer.”
Volume 7 – Who Protects the Consumer?
Abstract:
Do consumers need protection? Increasingly the public answer to this question has been “yes.” Increasingly, too, the Federal government has been identified as the source of this protection. Milton Friedman disputes the views that (1) consumers are in dire need of governmental protection against the wiles of the business community and that (2) governmental actions tend to make consumers better off. He argues that consumers’ problems more frequently than not can be attributed to failures of government rather than to failures of free markets. The best protection for the consumer, in Dr. Friedman’s view, is the free market. Despite popular mythology, business interests do not have the power to make people purchase something they do not want. Consider, for example, the failure of the highly touted Edsel, a product that was heavily promoted by the best advertising brains at the Ford Motor Company and its advertising agencies. When people have alternatives, they will not accept products they do not want. In a competitive market system, business people’s recognition that consumers have alternatives provides a powerful stimulus to keep product quality high. Fear of losing business to competitors provides a strong protective shield for the consumer. Armed with the protection offered by the free market, the consumer, says Dr. Friedman, really needs very little protection by the government. Indeed, many government attempts to protect consumers have made them worse off than they were beforehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KgVvUz6mUkY

Volume 7 – Who Protects the Consumer?
Transcript:
Friedman: The 1960’s Corvair, condemned by Ralph Nader as unsafe at any speed. Since Nader’s attack it is being increasingly accepted that we need government protection in the marketplace. Today there are agencies all over Washington where bureaucrats decide what’s good for us. Agencies to control the prices we pay, the quality of goods we can buy, the choice of products available. It’s already costing us more than $5 billion a year. Since the attack on the Corvair the government has been spending more and more money in the name of protecting the consumer. This is hardly what the 3rd president of the United States, Thomas Jefferson, whose monument this is, had in mind when he defined a wise and frugal government as, one, which restrains men from injuring each other and leaves them otherwise free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement. Ever since the Corvair affair the U.S. government has been increasingly been muscling in between buyer and seller in the marketplaces of America. By Thomas Jefferson’s standards, what we have today is not a wise and frugal government but a spendthrift and snooping government.
The federal regulations that govern our lives are available in many place. One set is here, in the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. In 1936, the Federal Government established the Federal Register to record all of the regulations, hearings and other materials connected with the agencies in Washington. This is volume 1, number 1. In 1936 it took three volumes like this to record all these matters. In 1937 it took four and then it grew and grew and grew. At first rather slowly and gradually, but even so, year by year it took a bigger and bigger pile to hold all the regulations and hearings for that year. Then around 1970 came a veritable explosion so that one pile is no longer enough to hold the regulations for that year. It takes two and then three piles. Until on one day in 1977, September 28, the Federal Register had no fewer than 1,754 pages and these aren’t exactly what you’d call small pages either.
Many of those regulations come from this building.
Worker: Consumer Protection Safety hotline _ can you hold please?
Friedman: The Consumer Product Safety Commission is one of the newest agencies set up on our behalf. One of its jobs is to give advice to consumers.
Workers: The clue that gave it away….. What has been done about the flammability of children’s garments?
Friedman: But its main function is to produce rules and regulations. Hundreds and hundreds of them. Designed to assure safety of products on the market. It’s hard to escape the invisible hand of the Consumer Product Safety Commission except for food and drugs, ammunition and automobiles that are covered by other agencies. It has power to regulate just about anything you can imagine. Already it costs $41 million a year to test and regulate all these products on our behalf and that’s just the beginning. The Commission employees highly trained technicians to carry out tests like this, checking the brakes on a bike. But the fact is that 80% of bike accidents are caused by human error. These tests may one day lead to safer brakes, but even that isn’t sure. The one thing that is sure is that the regulations that come out of here will make bikes more expensive and will reduce the variety available. Yes, they really are testing how matches strike. And the tests are very precise. The pressure must be exactly one pound, the match exactly at right angles.
No matter how many tests are done, children’s swings are never going to be totally safe. You cannot outlaw accidents. If you try, you end up with ludicrous results. It hardly seems possible but they really do use highly skilled people to devise regulations that will prevent toy guns from making to big of a bang.
The Commission, in effect, is deciding what they think is good for us. They are taking away our freedom to choose.
Consumers don’t have to be hemmed in by rules and regulations. They’re protected by the market itself. They want the best possible products at the lowest price. And the self-interest of the producer leaves him to provide those products in order to keep customers satisfied. After all, if they bring goods of low quality here, your not going to keep coming back to buy. If they bring goods that don’t serve your needs, you’re not going to buy them. And therefore, they search out all over the world, the products that might meet your needs and might appeal to you. And they stand in back of them because if they don’t they’re going to go out of business. You see the difference between the market and the political action, the governmental agencies. Here nobody forces you, your free, you do what you want to. There’s no policemen to take money out of your pocket or to make sure that you do what you’re told to. Over a quarter of a century ago, I bought, second hand, a desk calculator for which I paid $300. Only by keeping the road clear for human greed and self-interest to promote the welfare of the consumer.

FREE TO CHOOSE “Who protects the worker?” Video and Transcript Part 4 of 7

In 1980 I read the book FREE TO CHOOSE by Milton Friedman and it really enlightened me a tremendous amount.  I suggest checking out these episodes and transcripts of Milton Friedman’s film series FREE TO CHOOSE: “The Failure of Socialism” and “What is wrong with our schools?”  and “Created Equal”  and  From Cradle to Grave, and – Power of the Market. Milton Friedman shows in this episode how the worker is best protected and it is not by the government!!!!!!!

The essence of what Milton Friedman is saying in this episode is this:

“When unions get higher wages for their members by restricting entry into an occupation, those higher wages are at the expense of other workers who find their opportunities reduced. When government pays its employees higher wages, those higher wages are at the expense of the taxpayer. But when workers get higher wages and more civilized working conditions through the free market, when they get them by firms competing with one another for the best workers, by workers competing with one another for the best jobs, those higher wages are at nobody’s expense. They can only come from higher productivity, greater capital investment, more widely diffused skills. The whole pie is bigger, there is more for the worker, but there’s also more for the employer, the investor, the consumer and even the taxpayer. That’s the way a free market system distributes the fruits of economic progress among all the people. That’s the essence of the age of the worker.”

Pt 4

Friedman: Suddenly, in a free market, workers who once could not find jobs are now at a premium. Everyone benefited, workers and employers alike and the town thrived. One of the workers who arrived in Spartanburg was Mr. Juma. He came as a refugee from Edie Amiens Uganda.

Mr. Juma: We came in this country just with $139. I had a family, my wife and two kids. And, we came with only four bags of clothing which weighs about 40 pounds each, but we’re not allowed to take more than that. We had to leave all our possessions, all our property in Uganda. And myself, I just came down to Flowers Baking Company and I was hired as a laborer to work in the plant at $2.49 per hour.

Friedman: Five years later he is chief accountant of the company. In a free market his best protection his real wealth, turned out to be his skills and his desire to use them.

Juma: America has to offer me a lot of things. And this is a great country. I came in this country penniless, today I own a house, I own three cars, my wife has got a good job, I myself have got a good job and the children are schooling and everything has been working so fine. I believe this because of opportunity. This is where everyone wants to work in this country. There is lot of opportunity.

Friedman: When unions get higher wages for their members by restricting entry into an occupation, those higher wages are at the expense of other workers who find their opportunities reduced. That’s the essence of the age of the worker.

DISCUSSION

Participants: Robert McKenzie, Moderator; Milton Friedman; Lynn Williams, International Secretary, United Steel Workers of America; Walter Williams, Professor of Economics, Temple University; Ernest Green, Assistant Secretary of Labor, Department of Labor, Washington, D.C.; William H. Brady, President, W. H. Brady Co.

MCKENZIE: The discussion is already underway here at the University of Chicago, so let’s join it.

L. WILLIAMS: Well, we tried a free market system without labor unions. We tried it back in the 1920s and into the ’30s and it led the world into the biggest economic disaster it’s ever seen in modern times. Now I don’t think that we’re talking free market or labor unions. We’re talking free market with or without labor unions and a free market system without labor unions is a total disaster.

MCKENZIE: Let’s get other reactions to this, now, around the group. Is the free market system, Milton’s Friedman’s been arguing I think, not labor unions, which best protect the interests or serve the interests of the worker? Walter Williams, your reaction.

W. WILLIAMS: Well, I think clearly labor unions serve the best interests of workers who happen to be members of labor unions at the expense of workers who are excluded from being members of labor unions.

MCKENZIE: Ernest Green?

GREEN: I don’t think you can have a democratic society without having trade unions. I think if you look at any democratic country, it’s essential to it, right of workers to organize and I think it’s consistent if we are to maintain a democratic country, those freedoms that the right of workers to organize is a primary objective that maintains a democratic country, those freedoms that the right of workers to organize is a primary objective that we have to maintain.

MCKENZIE: Bill Brady?

BRADY: Well if they are so vital, why are so many union members leaving the union? Why are they, why are they losing so many __ why are the unions losing so many decertification elections? Why has the number of union members declined so precipitously from 23 percent of the labor force to what is it now __ less than 19, 18 percent?

L. WILLIAMS: All depends whose figures you’re reading. But workers aren’t leaving the labor movement in droves. The union is not declining precipitously. My union, the United Steel Workers of America, the major unions in the country, many small ones are out organizing and growing. The mix of work __ the mix of work in the society is changing. We have some employers, as we saw in the film, who can’t wait to rush off to the south and try to get in an anti-union environment and invest their money in prosperity in the south instead of in the north and surely if you invest money anywhere you’re going to have prosperity.

MCKENZIE: Let me just __

L. WILLIAMS: So we also have a mix in terms of Civil Service and service workers, where we have employers who have grumbled on that film about $2.90 minimum wage.

BRADY: I don’t know that if you __ I don’t know that if you invest money anywhere that you’re going to have prosperity. I don’t think that that’s a given. That is, you seem to me to be dealing in a premise there that is incorrect.

(Several people talking at once.)

MCKENZIE: Wait a minute now, wait a minute. The key question we’re discussing is: Who protects the worker? Is it the labor union or the free market that best serves his interest?

W. WILLIAMS: Well, it seems like from the evidence that I have, from a number of research projects that I’ve engaged in, I found that labor unions protect their members often at the expense of disadvantaged people. And it’s a very, very interesting question that labor unions down through the ages have discriminated against all kinds of people in favor of a particular class of workers.

L. WILLIAMS: We haven’t, Walter, we haven’t

W. WILLIAMS: We find that labor unions have gone out on strikes and have murdered and maimed people because other people sought entry and in terms of Mr. Green’s remark, he says that in the free democratic society we need labor unions. Yes, that is true, we need the right for voluntary association, that is people have the right to form association, but it should not be a requirement that you be a member of a labor union in order to establish a contract for employment.

L. WILLIAMS: Can’t we get some __ can’t we get some perspective in this, Walter. Talking about unions down through the ages makes no sense at all in terms of where we’re at now in this century at this time. This business of trying to relate where unions come from to the, to the medical profession and Hippocratic oaths, Hippocratic oaths or hypocritical oaths, however one looks at that, back in the Greek aeons really have very little relevancy.

W. WILLIAMS: Yes it does.

L. WILLIAMS: The violence, see hear me out a minute , I waited patiently.

W. WILLIAMS: Okay, okay.

L. WILLIAMS: The violence it’s associated with __ well, not so patiently, but I waited. The violence associated with the labor movement and so on have been minimal and was a reaction in this century, not over the ages, a reaction in this century to the violence done workers by corporation and powerful economic groups when there was no workers’ organization to protect them and no way to deal with their greed and with their power __

MCKENZIE: Okay. Now, now I’m turning to Milton because he’s heard the flavor of the discussion.

FRIEDMAN: Sure. What Lynn Williams is now saying is utter nonsense. There’s no other __ no two ways about it. The conditions of the worker in this country before there was labor unions were very important __ improved very greatly. You cannot tell me the millions of people, my parents, your parents, for all I know, parents of many people around, came to this country from Europe in order to be exploited and in order to be subjected to violence. Of course, there were incidents of violence.

GREEN: I disagree with that vehemently. I mean most of the blacks came to this country not voluntarily, but they were shipped here.

FRIEDMAN: The blacks __

GREEN: And the interesting thing about the issue on __ on Spartanburg though __

FRIEDMAN: The blacks did not __ excuse me, hold on for a second.

GREEN: Is that you left out __

FRIEDMAN: Hold on.

MCKENZIE: Let him finish and then back to you.

GREEN: All right.

FRIEDMAN: The blacks are an exception and I agree with you completely.

GREEN: Twenty-two million exceptions, though.

FRIEDMAN: But they are a very important exception. But there are also millions and millions __the people that Mr. Williams represents are not mostly blacks. They are mostly from the Slavic countries, came from Eastern Europe.

L. WILLIAMS: If you look at the membership of the Steel Workers __

FRIEDMAN: If we __ if we go back, the violent __ there was violence, of course, there always has been violence. It’s not excusable, I’m not excusing violence on the part of anyone, but I agree with Mr. Green and with Walter Williams that people should be free to organize. Of course they should be free to organize. What I object to is the special privileges that have been given by government to labor unions which are not available to other groups at all. When labor unions have used violence in industrial disputes they are not subjected to the same sanctions as people ordinarily are. When cars are turned over in the course of a labor dispute, how often do people go to jail as a result of it?

President Obama’s IRS is lying again to help him politically!!!

When I wrote recently that the IRS was corrupt, venal, and despicable, I didn’t realize that I was bending over backwards to be overly nice.

Every new revelation in the scandal shows that the agency is beyond salvage.

Writing for Real Clear Markets, Diana Furchtgott-Roth of the Manhattan Institute is appropriately skeptical of the IRS.

Coincidentally, Lerner’s computer crashed 10 days after Congress expressed concern about possible targeting of conservative groups. Emails between January 2009 and April 2011 were lost. Her computer is not available for examination, because it has already been recycled by the IRS. In a further coincidence, or not, a backup tape of agency emails made by the IRS was erased after 6 months. …As Georgia Republican Rep. Doug Collins said, the story sounds more and more implausible.

Diana then explains why this matters, using Obamacare as an example of why we should worry about a corrupt and politicized IRS.

Why should we care about missing emails from 2009 to 2011? As former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said in a 2013 hearing about Benghazi, “What difference at this point does it make?” It is not just that Americans’ basic trust in the IRS is being called into question. Over the past five years the IRS has been concentrating its power, giving the agency increased opportunities to pick on people and groups it dislikes. …Sarah Hall Ingram, who was commissioner of the IRS’s Tax-Exempt and Government Entities Division from 2009 to 2012 during the Lois Lerner scandal, now heads the IRS Affordable Care Act Office. …Do Americans trust the IRS to calculate these subsidies and refunds impartially? The IRS already made a power grab in May 2012 by extending premium subsidies to the 34 states with federal exchanges.

She also points out that the IRS is carrying water for the President’s attempt to stifle opposing views.

…the IRS proposed regulations that would allow the agency to regulate the free speech of President Obama’s political opponents, while leaving the political activities of his friends untouched. …The regulations were targeted at tax-exempt organizations that file under 501(c)(4) of the IRS code… Under the new rules these groups would not be allowed to engage in voter education that mentions a candidate within two months of a general election or one month of a primary. Left untouched by the proposed regulations were unions, which file under 501(c)(5) of the Internal Revenue Code.

Stan Veuger of the American Enterprise Institute also is not persuaded by the IRS’s deceitful excuses.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and the administration have consistently spouted lies and half-truths about the IRS scandal. The latest development in the controversy is that crucial emails have conveniently gone missing – is there any reason to believe that it is, as the administration claims, a mere accident? …This effort to keep conservative 501(c)(4) organizations from attempting to prevent president Obama’s reelection was, of course, hidden from the public. Ms. Lerner was careful to try and structure the IRS’ targeting in such a way that would not be appear to be a “per se political project,” in her own words, and denied in meetings with, and letters to, congressional oversight staff in 2012 that conservative groups were treated exceptionally or that the IRS’ ways of evaluating 501(c)(4)s had ever changed. The claims were false… In her response to a planted question from the audience at an American Bar Association tax conference, Ms. Lerner blamed the targeting of conservative groups on “our line people in Cincinnatti.” This has also turned out to be false. …non-Tea Party groups were never subjected to the same delays and investigations as Tea Party groups were. This once more suggest that obfuscation and dishonesty were central to the IRS’ approach to their targeting practices.

He even crunches some numbers to show that the claims from the IRS are utterly implausible.

It would be very helpful to see what communications took place between IRS officials and other Democrats. And this is where the missing emails come in. …They are gone, they now tell us, hard drives crashed and tapes were erased. Should we believe that? Of the 82 IRS employees tied to the targeting operation, 7 had their email disappear, or 8.5%. According to IRS commissioner John Koskinen, the industry standard is 3 to 5%. Under reasonable statistical assumptions, that makes the IRS scandal disappearance rate about as likely as the emails having been eaten by unicorn, with a probability far smaller than 1%. Given the IRS’ track record in this affair, that is way beyond anything that would justify giving the IRS and Lois Lerner the benefit of the doubt.

Amazingly, 12 percent of Americans believe the IRS. Here’s some polling data that Phil Kerpen shared on his twitter feed.

I’m particularly happy that younger people are more skeptical. They’re more tech-savvy and realize that the IRS’s excuses are a bunch of….well, a bunch of stuff that comes out of male cows.

And here are some good cartoons on the topic, starting with Eric Allie’s gem.

I like how he includes a representative of the 12 percent of deliberately gullible Americans.

And here’s another contribution from Allie.

And here’s Steve Kelley’s cartoon on the topic.

He’s right, needless to say. It would be better if the IRS was merely squandering money rather than seeking to subvert the democratic process.

Last but not least, here’s an evergreen cartoon about the IRS from Glenn McCoy.

Oh, and let’s not forget two other items.

The political hack who now heads the IRS is a partisan leftist.

IRS Commissioner John Koskinen contributed more than $85,000 to Democratic candidates and committees…with a $5,000 donation to President Obama in 2012 and $19,000 to the Democratic National Committee from 1988 to 2008.

And the political hack who was forced out of the IRS actually wanted to target a US Senator.

…the Internal Revenue Service’s (IRS) targeting of conservative individuals includes a sitting United States Senator. According to emails reviewed by the Committee under its Section 6103 authority, …Lois Lerner sought to have Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA) referred for IRS examination.

There are more horror stories to share, but this is enough for one day.

Suffice to say, you can understand why my fantasies involve tax reform rather than supermodels.

P.S. I can’t resist one more comment. Don’t forget that the corrupt and partisan IRS is in charge of Obamacare enforcement, but the bureaucrats want to be exempt from that government-run healthcare system. Just like politicians.

The moral of the story: Washington is even worse than you think. It’s a racket for insiders, but a burden for the rest of us.
