Thousands were led to belief in the importance of prayer by her weekly prayer times with students

As a personal note, no one, aside from my parents, more deeply affected the way I see God, his universe, his people and all people than did the Schaeffers. Their deep and sincere belief that Jesus Christ was Lord of all—all, all—carried me along throughout all my life. It was a deep and gracious thing that the Lord did to all me and mine to know these two great saints personally.
Edith Schaeffer passed into the presence of her Lord and Savior, whom she had served well and tirelessly for many years, on March 30th. Born Edith Rachel Merritt Seville on November 3, 1914, the fourth child of George and Jessie Seville, while her parents were serving in China with the China Inland Mission, her life began and ended as a missionary. She attended Beaver College in Glenside PA. After meeting in a church youth group, the Schaeffers married in 1935. Mrs. Schaeffer has four children, Priscilla, Susan, Deborah, and Frank; fifteen grandchildren, thirty-four great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.

She was possessed of a love of and zest for life. As a child she saw her father accommodate himself to the local Chinese culture rather than expecting it to accommodate itself to Western ways. This marked her life as the Schaeffers later defended and demonstrated their belief in the dignity of the lives of all human beings. Both firmly believed that all human beings were created in the image of God and were more like God than any other creature or thing in the entire universe.

Mealtimes were not cafeteria style, but served on finely set tables with folded napkins. There is a direct line from this treatment of people to the later controversies over human lives being taken in the horror of abortion. All death was seen as a horror, but hardly ever more so than in abortion.

She gave her life in service to God and all those created in his image. Schedules were never as important as the needs of the people in front of her. Planes missed, dignitaries kept waiting, and artificial imperatives all quailed before the dignity of the person with her at the moment.

Thousands were led to belief in the importance of prayer by her weekly prayer times with students. Prayer, public or private, convenient or inconvenient, came first. She truly believed that she was communicating with her Lord and God. Dr. and Mrs. Schaeffer were “constant in prayer” beyond anyone the writer has known.

Mealtimes were long and full of discussion. While the students were served elegantly, they were expected after the meals to clean up the mess that was made in the work of those who had prepared these feasts. We live after the Fall and before the coming of the Lord. In this time, work has to be done. She saw all godly work was as dignified and necessary. People were always to be treated well.

The ministry of L’Abri, cofounded by the Schaeffers, was the result of conflicts with a mission agency. This led the Schaeffers to begin L’Abri, a residential Christian community, that began in 1955 in a remote Swiss village and became one of the most important Christian works of our time. Beginning without a commitment to an American style growth mentality, the Schaeffers employed prayer for their needs in order to demonstrate to a watching world that the God they served was able to supply all their needs.

Honest answers to honest questions became a by-word at L’Abri. Men and women, young and old, flocked to an obscure Swiss village to find answers to their questions. A hard fought determination to the very concept of Truth and that the Bible was “breathed out by God,” led the Schaeffers to be dogged in their beliefs, and to demonstrate by word and deed that the God of the Bible “is there and is not silent.” All this work was permeated by loving patience for the difficult ones in their midst that they might be won.

Edith Schaeffer wrote nineteen books, many bestsellers, including L’Abri, and her Evangelical Christian Publishers Association Gold Medallion winners, Affliction (This was used by the writer as an important tool in graduate school.) and The Tapestry: the Life and Times of Francis and Edith Schaeffer.

L’Abri was a community where Francis and Edith Schaeffer got to meet vistors like Michele Bachmann and Timothy Leary and talk to them about the issues of the day. Here is a portion from the PBS website dedicated to the program FRONTLINE:

In his lengthy profile of Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann in this week’s New Yorker, Ryan Lizza examines how her religious beliefs have shaped her political philosophy. A key figure is Francis Schaeffer, whom Bachmann described as “a tremendous philosopher” and “very inspirational.”

Who is this influential man, not widely known outside of the conservative evangelical community?

FRONTLINE profiled Schaeffer in episode six of God in America, our co-production with American Experience. The above clip explores his role as a catalyst who inspired evangelicals’ re-entry into American politics in 1970s, including that:

  • He was “an embodiment of the counterculture”: With his long hair, goatee, knickers and knee socks, Schaeffer cut a striking figure. L’Abri (“the shelter”), the spiritual community he founded in the Swiss Alps, attracted “lots of long-haired hippies, coming through with backpacks,” his son Frank, who remembers Timothy Leary coming to L’Abri on a pilgrimage, told us.
  • His documentary films inspired thousands of evangelicals — including Bachmann — to enter the political arena: His first series, How Should We Then Live (watch here) targeted what Schaeffer saw as the culture’s great evil — secular humanism. “Humanism is man putting himself at the center of all things, rather than the creator God,” Schaeffer explains in the film. He goes on to argue that surrendering to humanism would lead to the moral decay of society.
  • He persuaded Jerry Falwell that evangelicals needed to take up the cause of abortion: Falwell and other evangelicals initially viewed Roe v. Wade as “a Catholic issue.” Even Schaeffer himself initially didn’t see abortion as a political cause. He was persuaded to the cause by his son Frank (who, after impregnating his girlfriend at age 17, became a passionate abortion foe) and his good friend Dr. C. Everett Koop. Schaeffer’s second film series Whatever Happened to the Human Race (watch here) is a powerful indictment of abortion, euthanasia and indifference to life: “If in these last decades of the 20th century, the Christian community does not make a determined stand on the issue of each individual to have a right to live and a right to be treated as made in the image of God, rather than a machine, I believe we have failed in the greatest moral challenge of this century. The choice is yours to make.”

(Francis did a great job in his film series “How Should we then live?” in looking at how humanism has affected art and culture in the Western World in the last 2000 years. My favorite episodes include his study of the Renaissance, the Revolutionary age, the age of Nonreason, and the age of Fragmentation.)

Planned Parenthood is the largest abortion provider in the USA and this editorial cartoon touches on this issue.

Dear Mr. President,

I know that you receive 20,000 letters a day and that you actually read 10 of them every day. I really do respect you for trying to get a pulse on what is going on out here.

I wanted to share with you some about my pro-life perspective.

I have gone back and forth and back and forth with many liberals on the Arkansas Times Blog on many issues such as abortion, human rights, welfare, poverty, gun control  and issues dealing with popular culture. Here is another exchange I had with them a while back. My username at the Ark Times Blog is Saline Republican.

On 2-21-13 on the Arkansas Times Blog  I asserted: 

Elwood you suggest if prolife people are not willing to pay for poor people’s unwanted babies’ needs then we are not part of the answer.

Hank Hanegraaff noted:

Attacking people rather than arguing principles, ad hominem arguments are a trick designed to distract attention from the real issue — namely, that abortion is the killing of an innocent human being.

On 2-21-13 on the Arkansas Times Blog  the liberal Amy Benton Bradley-Hole observed:

“Instead, it is an attempt to attack character in order to avoid the case against abortion.”

The hell it is. It’s an attempt to make moral absolutists face reality and comprehend the actual results of their misguided actions. But the problem with moral absolutists is they’re too dense to understand this.

On 2-21-13 on the Arkansas Times Blog  I responded:

Francis Schaeffer rightly noted, “If there is no absolute moral standard, then one cannot say in a final sense that anything is right or wrong. By absolute we mean that which always applies, that which provides a final or ultimate standard. There must be an absolute if there are to be morals, and there must be an absolute if there are to be real values. If there is no absolute beyond man’s ideas, then there is no final appeal to judge between individuals and groups whose moral judgements conflict. We are merely left with conflicting opinions.”

That is why I wonder why Amy Bento Bradley-Holes would be critical of moral absolutes. On what basis do moral nonabsolutists have to say that Hitler was wrong?

I truly believe that many of the problems we have today in the USA are due to the advancement of humanism in the last few decades in our society. Ronald Reagan appointed the evangelical Dr. C. Everett Koop to the position of Surgeon General in his administration. He partnered with Dr. Francis Schaeffer in making the video below. It is very valuable information for Christians to have.  Actually I have included a video below that includes comments from him on this subject.

The pro-life atheist Nat Hentoff wrote a fine article below I wanted to share with you.

Nat Hentoff is an atheist, but he became a pro-life activist because of the scientific evidence that shows that the unborn child is a distinct and separate human being and even has a separate DNA. His perspective is a very intriguing one that I thought you would be interested in. I have shared before many   cases (Bernard Nathanson, Donald Trump, Paul Greenberg, Kathy Ireland)    when other high profile pro-choice leaders have changed their views and this is just another case like those. I have contacted the White House over and over concerning this issue and have even received responses. I am hopeful that people will stop and look even in a secular way (if they are not believers) at this abortion debate and see that the unborn child is deserving of our protection.That is why the writings of Nat Hentoff of the Cato Institute are so crucial.

I truly believe that many of the problems we have today in the USA are due to the advancement of humanism in the last few decades in our society. Ronald Reagan appointed the evangelical Dr. C. Everett Koop to the position of Surgeon General in his administration. He partnered with Dr. Francis Schaeffer in making the video below. Insisting on life

http://www.NewsandOpinion.com | A longtime friend of mine is married to a doctor who also performs abortions. At the dinner table one recent evening, their 9-year-old son — having heard a word whose meaning he didn’t know — asked, “What is an abortion?” His mother, choosing her words carefully, described the procedure in simple terms.

“But,” said her son, “that means killing the baby.” The mother then explained that there are certain months during which an abortion cannot be performed, with very few exceptions. The 9-year-old shook his head. “But,” he said, “it doesn’t matter what month. It still means killing the babies.”

Hearing the story, I wished it could be repeated to the justices of the Supreme Court, in the hope that at least five of them might act on this 9-year-old’s clarity of thought and vision.

The boy’s spontaneous insistence on the primacy of life also reminded me of a powerful pro-life speaker and writer who, many years ago, helped me become a pro-lifer. He was a preacher, a black preacher. He said: “There are those who argue that the right to privacy is of a higher order than the right to life.

“That,” he continued, “was the premise of slavery. You could not protest the existence or treatment of slaves on the plantation because that was private and therefore out of your right to be concerned.”

This passionate reverend used to warn: “Don’t let the pro-choicers convince you that a fetus isn’t a human being. That’s how the whites dehumanized us … The first step was to distort the image of us as human beings in order to justify what they wanted to do — and not even feel they’d done anything wrong.”

That preacher was Jesse Jackson. Later, he decided to run for the presidency — and it was a credible campaign that many found inspiring in its focus on what still had to be done on civil rights. But Jackson had by now become “pro-choice” — much to the appreciation of most of those in the liberal base.

The last time I saw Jackson was years later, on a train from Washington to New York. I told him of a man nominated, but not yet confirmed, to a seat on a federal circuit court of appeals. This candidate was a strong supporter of capital punishment — which both the Rev. Jackson and I oppose, since it involves the irreversible taking of a human life by the state.

I asked Jackson if he would hold a press conference in Washington, criticizing the nomination, and he said he would. The reverend was true to his word; the press conference took place; but that nominee was confirmed to the federal circuit court. However, I appreciated Jackson’s effort.

On that train, I also told Jackson that I’d been quoting — in articles, and in talks with various groups — from his compelling pro-life statements. I asked him if he’d had any second thoughts on his reversal of those views.

Usually quick to respond to any challenge that he is not consistent in his positions, Jackson paused, and seemed somewhat disquieted at my question. Then he said to me, “I’ll get back to you on that.” I still patiently await what he has to say.

As time goes on, my deepening concern with the consequences of abortion is that its validation by the Supreme Court, as a constitutional practice, helps support the convictions of those who, in other controversies — euthanasia, assisted suicide and the “futility doctrine” by certain hospital ethics committees — believe that there are lives not worth continuing.

Around the time of my conversation with Jackson on the train, I attended a conference on euthanasia at Clark College in Worcester, Mass. There, I met Derek Humphry, the founder of the Hemlock Society, and already known internationally as a key proponent of the “death with dignity” movement.

He told me that for some years in this country, he had considerable difficulty getting his views about assisted suicide and, as he sees it, compassionate euthanasia into the American press.

“But then,” Humphry told me, “a wonderful thing happened. It opened all the doors for me.”

“What was that wonderful thing?” I asked.

“Roe v. Wade,” he answered.

The devaluing of human life — as the 9-year-old at the dinner table put it more vividly — did not end with making abortion legal, and therefore, to some people, moral. The word “baby” does not appear in Roe v. Wade — let alone the word “killing.”

And so, the termination of “lives not worth living” goes on.

Nancy, Richard Pearcey to lead Francis Schaeffer Center at HBU

Best-selling author Nancy Pearcey and writer-editor J. Richard Pearcey have teamed up to create the Francis Schaeffer Center for Worldview and Culture on the campus of Houston Baptist University.

The purpose of the Francis Schaeffer Center is to “promote foundational research and out-of-the-box creative thinking based on historic Christianity as a total way of life informed by verifiable truth concerning God, humanity, and the cosmos,” according to the FSC mission statement.

Nancy Pearcey serves as director of the Francis Schaeffer Center. Formerly an agnostic, Nancy is professor and scholar-in-residence at HBU. She is the author of seminal works such as Total Truth, The Soul of Science, and Saving Leonardo, and also serves as editor at large of The Pearcey Report.  Nancy was heralded in The Economist as “America’s pre-eminent evangelical Protestant female intellectual.”

Courses created by FSC will give students a unique opportunity to work through Nancy’s award-winning books and other foundational resources on worldview and cultural engagement.  “Our goal at FSC is to equip students in every major to be critical and creative thinkers,” Pearcey said. “Under the visionary leadership of President Robert Sloan, Houston Baptist University is moving forward strategically to implement a Christian worldview approach more intentionally and comprehensively across all the disciplines.”

The Center is named for noted author Francis A. Schaeffer, whose work with wife Edith at L’Abri Fellowship in Switzerland won international respect for giving an “honest answer to honest questions.” Time magazine hailed the Schaeffers’ work as a “Mission to Intellectuals.”

J. Richard Pearcey serves as associate director of the Center. Richard is scholar for worldview studies at HBU, as well as editor and publisher of The Pearcey Report. He is formerly managing editor of the Capitol Hill newspaper Human Events and associate editor of the “Evans-Novak Political Report.”

“If the Christian worldview is true to reality, and we think a rational case can be made that it is, it can be the key to a renaissance of humanity, freedom, and creativity,” Richard said. “Nancy and I met at L’Abri in Switzerland, so we are grateful for the opportunity to say ‘thank you’ to the Schaeffers and their work by inspiring students and others  — teachers, activists, professionals — to apply Christian thought forms across the whole of life, from art to science to business and politics.”

HBU Provost John Mark Reynolds said, “When I was a young adult, the writings and films of Francis Schaeffer modeled a way of doing Christian apologetics that had an important impact on my life. It is my honor to see HBU set up a study center dedicated to the Schaeffer approach to worldview studies. There is no better time for Christians to impact the culture, few better models than Schaeffer for evangelicals, and no better team than Nancy and Richard Pearcey to set up the center.”

According to the FSC mission statement, “Since its founding, Houston Baptist University has built a rich heritage of Christian higher education. . . The Francis Schaeffer Center for Worldview and Culture will give focus to HBU’s goal of equipping students and faculty with a Biblical worldview for application to their thinking and their lives. FSC will equip HBU students, faculty, staff, campus organizations, stakeholders, and outside partners to apply the liberating principles of a Biblical worldview in the classroom, across the campus, and around the world.”

Open letter to President Obama (Part 435) Remembering Koop part 5(Public Health poster developed under Koop)

Dear Mr. President,

I know that you receive 20,000 letters a day and that you actually read 10 of them every day. I really do respect you for trying to get a pulse on what is going on out here.

I wanted to share with you some about my pro-life perspective.

Dr. C. Everett Koop was active on getting the word out about how people could catch AIDS. Public Health officials during the second half of the 1980s became concerned about the spread of AIDS particularly among minorities, a disproportionate number of whom were intravenous drug users, had no health coverage, and were thus were an increased risk to contract the disease. A poster was developed and sent out across the country. Below in the post you will a copy of that poster.

On 2-25-13 we lost a great man when we lost Dr. C. Everett Koop. I have written over and over the last few years quoting Dr. C. Everett Koop and his good friend Francis Schaeffer. They both came together for the first time in 1973 when Dr. Koop operated on Schaeffer’s daughter and as a result they became close friends. That led to their involvement together in the book and film series “WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE HUMAN RACE?” in 1979.

In the film series “WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE HUMAN RACE?” the arguments are presented  against abortion (Episode 1),  infanticide (Episode 2),   euthenasia (Episode 3), and then there is a discussion of the Christian versus Humanist worldview concerning the issue of “the basis for human dignity” in Episode 4 and then in the last episode a close look at the truth claims of the Bible.

In this 1979 film series they dealt with the big social issues and predicted what social problems we have in the future because of humanism. For instance, they knew that the Jack Kevorkians of the world would be coming down the pike. They predicted that there was a slippery slope from abortion to infanticide to youth euthanasia brought on by the materialistic worldview.

DO WE STILL VALUE LIFE? REMEMBERING C. EVERETT KOOP

As we reflect on the passing of C. Everett Koop who passed away today (Feb. 25th, 2013), at the age of 96, it is probably best to remember him first as a gifted Christian physician who lovingly cared for so many children and was instrumental in the growth of pediatric surgery we know today. Long before he collaborated with Dr. Schaeffer on Whatever Happened to the Human Race? or became the Surgeon General under Ronald Reagan’s administration, Dr. Koop was on the front lines of care for children. His skill in this area is what providentially would bring him into contact with the Schaeffers.

In 1946 Koop established the pediatric surgical division at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. It was the first in Philadelphia and only the second of it’s type in America. It was also in Schaeffer’s home town.

The Schaeffers who likewise had an interest in children had founded their work called Children for Christ just three years earlier in 1943. In 1947 Schaeffer would be asked by the Independent Board of Presbyterian Foreign Missions to tour post-war Europe to determine the state of children and the condition of the church.  The following year, in 1948,  the Schaeffer’s were called to be missionaries to Europe. After accepting this call, Francis would travel for six months in the United States lecturing on his discoveries in regard to the state of the church in Europe. This time away from the family was a period of trial and hardship for Edith with various difficulties. One of which was that their daughter Priscilla had contracted a rare ailment that the doctor they were seeing was unable to diagnose. As the story goes, Priscilla was waiting to be x-rayed when a young pediatric surgeon “who had a specialist knowledge of mesenteric adenitis” happened to spot her and notice she had recognizable symptoms. He arranged to have her appendix removed the following day, which cured her ailment. That young surgeon was C. Everett Koop.

During Priscilla’s treatment Dr. Koop was impressed with the Schaeffers and their visible faith and he mentioned to Edith that he had just become a Christian. Edith at some point gave Dr. Koop a message from Priscilla from Francis, so as he wheeled Priscilla’s cart into the operating area he read aloud the telegram: “Dear Priscilla, Remember underneath are the everlasting arms. Love Daddy.” Now, this all might sound quite unusual for a surgeon to do such a thing, but it shows us two things. Firstly, that there was an immediate connection between Dr. Koop and the Schaeffers, but also that Dr. Koop had a true love for children and his work.

This seemingly chance meeting speaks of providence at work. The fact that the Schaeffer’s met Dr. Koop just months away from their move to Europe, and a short time after his conversion and that he had just the right knowledge of Priscilla’s ailment is cause for reflection. The fact that this providence would eventually unite two great minds in both friendship and significant subjects of life is very significant. Not surprisingly Dr. Schaeffer and Dr. Koop would become close and a long friendship would begin.

Uniting In The Cause of Life
Most notably and against perhaps Dr. Koop and Francis Schaeffer’s wishes the cause of life has been most often reduced to abortion alone. While abortion is no small matter and should not be in any way minimized, yet what both men were interested in was not a single issue of abortion alone, but life. The reality was that the secular humanistic worldview was challenging life itself on may fronts. This conception most definitely includes both abortion, euthanasia, but also the loss of the high view of man and human dignity.

“If man is not made in the image of God, nothing then stands in the way of inhumanity. There is no good reason why mankind should be perceived as special. Human life is cheapened. We can see this in many of the major issues being debated in our society today: abortion, infanticide, euthanasia, the increase of child abuse and violence of all kinds, pornography (and its particular kinds of violence as evidenced in sadomasochism), the routine torture of political prisoners in many parts of the world, the crime explosion, and the random violence which surrounds us.

In communist countries, where materialism and humanistic thinking have been dominant for over several generations, a low view of people has been standard for years. This is apparent not only in the early legislation about abortion but also in the thousands of political prisoners who have been systematically oppressed, tortured, and killed as part of the very fabric of communism. Now, however, as humanism dominates the West, we have a low view of mankind in the West as well. Let us consider some more of the direct and indirect results that this low view of people has brought into our society in the noncommunist world.” ~ Schaeffer, Whatever Happened to the Human Race?

Yet instead of acknowledging this, the culture attacked the person rather than the core argument, much to Schaeffer’s lament:

“For example, all you have to do is to consider the way the media treated Dr. C. Everett Koop. Dr. Koop is one of the foremost pediatric surgeons in the United States, and among other honors, he was given the highest honor of the French government for his pioneering work in pediatric surgery. But when he was nominated for the position of Surgeon General, he was attacked by the secular media with total disregard for objective reporting — and with total disregard for his brilliant humanitarian record as a surgeon. Those in the media holding the humanist world view could not tolerate Dr. Koop’s voice to be heard — they could not tolerate his articulate defense of the sanctity of human life to be expressed.” ~ Schaeffer, A Christian Manifesto

Do we still value life?
Now is as good a time as any to remember what Dr. Koop and Dr. Schaeffer were striving for. For the church and culture to wake up and sees the cultural monolith that advances on every front… advancing a cause that will always be inhuman and always jeopardize life and human dignity. Today, we must ourselves find ways to speak around the political marginalization that has marginalized us much as those who are being put to death. Our compassion must be evident and our message must not fail to sound, as life depends upon it.

Dear Mr. President,

I know that you receive 20,000 letters a day and that you actually read 10 of them every day. I really do respect you for trying to get a pulse on what is going on out here.

I wanted to share with you some about my pro-life perspective.

I have gone back and forth and back and forth with many liberals on the Arkansas Times Blog on many issues such as abortion, human rights, welfare, poverty, gun control  and issues dealing with popular culture. Here is another exchange I had with them a while back. My username at the Ark Times Blog is Saline Republican.

On 2-21-13 on the Arkansas Times Blog  I asserted: 

“Stephen Anthony Lafferty brought up the subject of selfishness. That reminds me of a story about Hillary Clinton, who I admit probably will be our next president. I got this off of Doug Lawrence’s blog:

Hillary Clinton’s encounter with Mother Teresa began, it just so happens, at the National Prayer Breakfast, way back in 1994. That year, the keynoter was a special guest: Mother Teresa. Nearly 3,000 packed a huge room. Near the dais were the president and first lady—the Clintons…Mother Teresa next spoke of love, of selfishness, of a lack of love for the unborn—and a lack of want of the unborn because of selfishness. Then, the gentle sister made this elite group uncomfortable: “But I feel that the greatest destroyer of peace today is abortion, because Jesus said, ‘If you receive a little child, you receive me.’ So every abortion is the denial of receiving Jesus.”

On 2-21-13 on the Arkansas Times Blog  the liberal Elwood responded, “Again, Saline, when should child support payments begin?”

On 2-21-13 on the Arkansas Times Blog  the liberal Amy Benton Bradley-Hole observed:

Since when does what Mother Teresa said about abortion have any bearing on U.S. abortion laws? Did someone abolish our state government overnight and establish the Catholic Church of Arkansas parochial junta? Or are we still a place where religious beliefs aren’t forced on people by the government?

Wait, don’t answer that. This is the Bible belt, after all.

Look, I’m a pretty hard core Christian. And I admire many of Mother Teresa’s qualities. But when it comes to discussions of government and science (Anybody in the legislature remember what science is? Apparently not.), I would never bring up my religious beliefs. BECAUSE MY RELIGIOUS BELIEFS HAVE NO PLACE IN GOVERNMENT, AND NO BEARING ON SCIENTIFIC FACTS.

Why is that so #*^$ing hard to understand?

On 2-21-13 on the Arkansas Times Blog  I asserted: 

Elwood you suggest if prolife people are not willing to pay for poor people’s unwanted babies’ needs then we are not part of the answer.

Hank Hanegraaff noted:

Attacking people rather than arguing principles, ad hominem arguments are a trick designed to distract attention from the real issue — namely, that abortion is the killing of an innocent human being. Comedienne Whoopi Goldberg used this tactic when she suggested that abortion rights advocates would take pro-lifers more seriously if they were willing to adopt babies slated for abortion.
What this ad hominem argument is really saying is, “If you won’t adopt my babies, don’t tell me I can’t kill them!” That, of course, makes as much sense as forbidding me from intervening when I see my neighbor physically abusing a child unless I am willing to adopt that child.

The “adoption argument” completely evades the basic morality or immorality of abortion. Instead, it is an attempt to attack character in order to avoid the case against abortion.

Francis Schaeffer saw the issues that our society would be facing in the future because of humanism and he was right on just about everything. Take a look at some of his quotes below: (By the way one of my favorite quotes is the first one listed below.)

Jack Kemp established himself as one of the conservative policy movement’s most articulate speakers and defenders of personal liberty and responsibility. The public first knew of Kemp for his exploits on the gridiron. Kemp played in all three major professional football leagues, the NFL, the AFL and the Canadian Football League. Schooled in supply-side economics, the second part of his life found Kemp serving nine terms in Congress and then as Housing Secretary under President George H.W. Bush, Kemp was a 1988 Republican candidate for President and he was the Republican 1996 nominee for Vice President. Kemp spoke to the Public Policy Foundation on October 20, 1993. Jack Kemp died May 2, 2009 and with his passing, the American conservative movement lost one of its most articulate statesmen.

Biography and Assessment: In the late 1940’s, Schaeffer and his wife Edith moved to Switzerland as long-term missionaries. They initially began a program called “Children for Christ” and on weekends entertained groups of schoolgirls on ski holidays in their Swiss chalet. By 1955 the couple had set up their own independent ministry organization called L’Abri (“The Shelter”) in the mountain village of Huemoz. They began taking guests, and developed a regular weekend schedule that consisted of conversations about religion, philosophy, art, and culture. L’Abri became popular among student circles, and by 1957 the Schaeffers were hosting about 25 guests every weekend.

The European students that showed up at L’Abri were well-versed in the post-Enlightenment philosophers like Kierkegaard and Hegel and with the existentialist literature of Camus and Sartre. As historian Michael S. Hamilton notes,

These students tutored Francis in the details of modern post-Christian thought, while he observed its impact on their lives. They had been taught that human beings were the mere product of time and chance in a materialistic world. This left many of them unable to find any basis for distinctions between right and wrong nor meaning in the normal activities of human life. The young people’s self-destructive moral confusion, alienation from society, and sincere search for something better stirred the Schaeffers’ compassion. It made the cost of an open home worth bearing, and it compelled Francis into ever-deeper reflection on the trajectory of modern culture.

The popularity of L’Abri continued to increase and by 1960 even Time magazine was taking notice. Workers at the chalet began recording Schaeffer’s lectures on the philosophical meaning of modern theology and culture. The tapes quickly developed an international circulation prompting the evangelist to return to the states. In 1965 Schaeffer took his first speaking trip to the United States, giving a series of lectures in the Boston area. He then gave a series of talks at Wheaton College that were later published as The God Who Is There. Although he dressed like a Swiss farmer, wearing knickers and an alpine hiking outfit, the most unusual aspect about Schaeffer was the way in which he differed from other evangelicals in engaging with the broader culture. Hamilton points out,

At Wheaton College, students were fighting to show films like Bambi, while Francis was talking about the films of Bergman and Fellini. Administrators were censoring existential themes out of student publications, while Francis was discussing Camus, Sartre, and Heidegger. He quoted Dylan Thomas, knew the artwork of Salvador Dali, listened to the music of the Beatles and John Cage.

Over the next ten years Francis and Edith became increasingly influential figures within American evangelicalism. Francis published eighteen books and booklets, most of which came out of lectures and talks he had been giving since the 1950s, that sold over 2.5 million copies in the U.S.

Schaeffer often railed against the middle-class evangelical mindset that placed an emphasis on “personal peace and affluence” and became an intellectual hero to Christian counter-culture figures like Jack Sparks, founder of Berkeley’s Christian World Liberation Front, and Larry Norman, “poet laureate of the Jesus Revolution.” By the 1970’s, though, he had also begun to gain a hearing within what would later be viewed as the “religious right.” Congressman Jack Kemp introduced the Schaeffers to Washington insiders and an encounter with L’Abri student Michael Ford led to a private dinner in the Ford White House.

In 1974, Schaeffer’s son Franky, a budding filmmaker, designed a ten-part documentary film series intended as a Christian response to Kenneth Clark’s widely viewed Civilization series. The project, How Should We Then Live?, consisted of an 18-city tour that attracted tens of thousands of people and was viewed as a resounding success.

What set the film series apart was the focus on legalized abortion. By the late 1970s, Schaeffer began devoting his full attention to the issue and encouraged pediatric surgeon C. Everett Koop to collaborate on a five-part film series with accompanying book, action handbook, and international lecture tour. In Whatever Happened to the Human Race? , Schaeffer argued that secular humanism had led to the devaluation of human life while Koop presented testimony about the widespread practice of infanticide in hospitals and its links to abortion. Koop later wrote that his involvement in this project was his first step toward becoming President Reagan’s surgeon general.

Unlike his first series, Human Race failed to garner a large audience and even lost money in some of the locations it was screened. Undaunted, Schaeffer continued to focus on abortion, calling it the hinge issue for American society in his book A Christian Manifesto. The book inspired Jerry Falwell to take a stand against abortion and inspired Operation Rescue founder Randall Terry to start a new kind of abortion protest employing passive resistance techniques used in the civil-rights struggle.

In early 1984 he had just enough strength left from his battle with cancer to complete a 13-city tour lecturing on this theme. A month after the tour was complete, he died at his home in Rochester, Minnesota.

Schaeffer—who always claimed to be an evangelist and not a philosopher—was often criticized for the way his work oversimplified intellectual history and philosophy. Even his most ardent admirers admit that he made significant errors in detail and overly broad generalizations. His books, which were often edited together from lecture notes, often fail to provide a systematic coherence that would allow them to withstand greater scrutiny.

Michael Hamilton rightly acknowledges, though, that Schaeffer played a vital role in “stepping stone scholarship.” His work provided an opening to the intellectual depths of Christianity that had been sorely lacking in conservative Protestant Christianity. Schaeffer helped to restore the value of developing a Christian worldview and offered the intellectuals tools that evangelicals needed to properly engage with the secular culture. The effect of his legacy still reverberates through evangelicalism. His influence shaped such thinkers as Chuck Colson, Nancy Pearcey, Cal Thomas, Ron Sider, Harold O. J. Brown, Os Guinness, Thomas Morris, Clark Pinnock, Mark Noll, Doug Groothuis, Jim Sire, and Ronald Wells. Perhaps the best summation of the evangelist who was considered both a “missionary to intellectuals” and a “guru to fundamentalists” is the one provided by Albert Mohler:

Schaeffer served as a prophet of cultural engagement during an age of rebellion among America’s youth, and he shaped the thinking of an entire generation of theologically-minded Christian young people.

On 2-25-13 we lost a great man when we lost Dr. C. Everett Koop. I have written over and over the last few years quoting Dr. C. Everett Koop and his good friend Francis Schaeffer. They both came together for the first time in 1973 when Dr. Koop operated on Schaeffer’s daughter and as a result they became close friends. That led to their involvement together in the book and film series “WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE HUMAN RACE?” in 1979.

After a Hostile Washington Welcome, a Contentious Surgeon General Has Become the Country’s Most Visible and Aggressive Antismoking Crusader

During the summer after his junior year of college, 19-year-old Charles Everett Koop talked his way into a job at a Long Island hospital and was quickly befriended by the hospital’s chief of surgery. A serious-minded Dartmouth premed student, Koop studied the doctor’s technique the way hidden casino cameras study gamblers—he didn’t miss a move. So one day, as Koop stood by to watch him amputate a leg, the chief surgeon turned to him and said, “Koop, why don’t you do it?” Without hesitation, the youth stepped in. The operation was a success and the patient lived, even crediting Koop with saving his life. It is a story the onetime amateur carver, now Surgeon General of the United States, still relishes. And it demonstrates the fearlessness in the face of a challenge that has emerged as the man’s public trademark.

Koop is now well into his second four-year term as Surgeon General of the U.S. Public Health Service, which employs 39,000 people. In what is largely a symbolic job, he has shown himself to be the most spirited anti-smoking crusader since 1964, when Surgeon General Luther Terry issued his landmark report on the perils of the tobacco habit. “When I see the disability, the disease that smoking causes, I get very passionate,” says Koop, 69. “Besides, I’m enthusiastic about what I do. I couldn’t just sit here and sign papers.” Two years after the respected pediatric surgeon first took office in 1982, he put that passion to work, calling for a smoke-free society by the year 2000. He has supported legislation making even more fearsome those cigarette-package warnings bearing his imprimatur, and he has successfully pushed for similar labeling on all smokeless tobacco products as well. Normally a team player, Koop has even done verbal battle with Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger, who refused to abolish the discount on cigarettes sold in military PXs, claiming it would be seen as an erosion of benefits. Countered a disappointed Koop: “How could the removal of cigarettes be viewed as a reduction of benefits, when the only benefit would be a lifetime of illness or early death?”

Naturally, none of this has set well with the tobacco industry. “I wish he’d make a crusade out of the issues that have a bigger societal impact, such as cocaine, heroin and other drugs,” says Michael J. Kerrigan, president of the Smokeless Tobacco Council. But Koop has never been too shy to court criticism. An evangelical Christian, he first attracted Ronald Reagan’s attention as an outspoken pro-life advocate. At his confirmation hearings in the fall of 1981, Koop’s highly quotable, often inflammatory remarks came back to haunt him early and often. He had called amniocentesis, a common test to detect a defective fetus, a “search and destroy mission,” and he had described legalized abortion as the first step in a grim societal slide toward infanticide and euthanasia. He had labeled as “anti-family” homosexuality, childless couples and single parenthood.

Though Koop vowed not to use the Surgeon General’s job as a pulpit, critics charged that he lacked sufficient experience in the public-health field, and some began referring to him as Dr. Kook, deeply wounding a proud man who had reigned as a near-deity during 33 years as the distinguished surgeon in chief at Philadelphia’s prestigious Children’s Hospital. What Koop naively had assumed would be a routine week-long confirmation hearing turned into a seven-month mudslinging battle. But Koop stubbornly refused to retreat. “If I were going to leave Washington, as ignominious a defeat as it was going to be, I was going to be nonconfirmed,” he says. “I was not going to leave because there were people trying to get me to leave.” Vindication of a sort came last fall, when he was reconfirmed by the Senate with nary a whimper.

Over the years, where there has been Koop there has often been controversy. “I am willing to speak my mind,” he says. “I am not somebody people feel lukewarm about.” A strong-willed man of deep moral convictions, he tends to sees things in the absolute—right or wrong, with little room for maneuvering. His formidable bulk (6’1″, 206 pounds) is complemented by an imperious veneer and a severe, neatly trimmed beard of the kind favored by his stern Dutch ancestors. (The beard was grown as a lark but retained out of vanity after Koop saw a photo of himself without it. “There were three chins,” he recalls. “I said, ‘No one is going to see those again.’ “) He has broad shoulders, a crushing handshake and the hard stare of a disapproving parent catching a child sneaking in after curfew. He is not one for small talk. “Having lunch with him was like having lunch with Moses,” remembers Donald Drake, medical writer for the Philadelphia Inquirer. “I’d kind of sit there and wait for the Commandments.”

In fact, Koop has always lived as if he were on a mission from God. One of his early tasks was to establish an outstanding department of pediatric surgery at Children’s Hospital. When he became surgeon in chief in 1948, he was only the sixth pediatric surgeon in the country; now there are about 430. “All through my training I had a terribly guilty feeling that children weren’t getting a fair shake,” says Koop. “They were being treated like their grandfathers, getting huge incisions for things that could be done with a tiny hole.” He faced immediate and widespread skepticism from general surgeons who were unhappy over the growing specialization of their field. Koop’s brashness was no help to his cause. “Some poor little kid would come into my office in a truss and I’d say to his doctor, ‘Why is he wearing that thing?’ The doctor would say, ‘I can’t operate on him until he’s 6.’ I’d say, ‘I’ll do it tomorrow.’ ”

At one point Koop operated on his 2-year-old son, Norman, for a hernia. “Anybody I knew would have made a four-inch incision and laced him up like a 39-cent football and told him to stay in the hospital for a week and then not to cough, sneeze or look cross-eyed for six more. I said, ‘This can’t happen to my child!’ ”

He challenged doubters then, as he does now, with results. Among his accomplishments at Children’s were the development of safer pediatric anesthesia procedures, a drastic lowering of the infant-surgery mortality rate, the establishment of the country’s first neonatal intensive-care unit, and numerous advances in pre-and post-operative care. It was inevitable, perhaps, that Koop should also become one of the right-to-life movement’s most eloquent supporters. He had, after all, devoted his life to healing handicapped infants. “I consider an unborn baby a human life,” says Koop, author of two books opposing abortion. “Somebody has to stand up for that life.”

Stand he did—repeatedly, and at considerable cost to his reputation. In 1976, after receiving the William E. Ladd gold medal from the American Academy of Pediatrics, he used his acceptance speech to chide his colleagues for their “involvement with infanticide” by condoning decisions to allow severely handicapped infants to starve to death. “I got a standing ovation,” he says, “but when I walked down the aisle there were some doctors who turned their backs on me and never felt the same toward me again.” Then, in 1979, he and the late theologian Francis Schaeffer undertook a 20-city audiovisual lecture tour, denouncing abortion and urging support instead for church-sponsored crisis centers and homes for unwed mothers. “If you take the average person who is pregnant and doesn’t want to be…if you find her an alternative to abortion, she’ll take it,” says Koop. “There’s an instinct about women that they don’t want to kill their babies, really.”

Some people describe Koop as self-centered and aloof, short on tolerance and long on evangelical bluster. Others say he is sensitive, compassionate and loyal. All agree he is a complex and driven man, who is happy only when he is pursuing accomplishment. Growing up an only child, a banker’s son in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn, he was a serious youngster and something of an oddball—an easy target for bullies when he traveled to advanced classes in another school district. “All the Jewish kids I went to school with would go home together, and I’d be alone and get beaten up every afternoon,” he remembers with a laugh. “I used to hide in a phone booth with a bunch of nickels, calling everybody I knew, hoping those guys outside would get tired of waiting for me.”

While his friends preoccupied themselves with the Dodgers and stickball, Koop was ever the precocious eccentric, cruising the secondhand bookshops, devouring volumes on surgical techniques. If he learned from his mother that someone in the neighborhood had just had a gall-bladder operation, he would invariably press her for details. “Someplace along the way I realized that surgeons were healers,” he says with the barely suppressed hauteur of his specialty. “They didn’t give you medicine and say, ‘Go home and let me know what it changes.’ They did it! And I’m a doer.”

After entering Dartmouth at 16, Koop met Elizabeth Flanagan, a gracious, mild-mannered Vassar student and daughter of a doctor. They married in 1938, and she has devoted herself to taking care of her husband. “I think to be used as a sounding board for a man like this is a great satisfaction,” she says. After graduating from Cornell Medical College, Koop interned at Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia and moved to Children’s Hospital five years later. He was soon held in awe for his surgical wizardry. “In the operating room he was like a maestro conducting an orchestra,” remembers a colleague. Years later, in 1974, Koop made worldwide headlines when he separated Alta and Clara Rodriguez, Siamese twins from the Dominican Republic who had been born joined at the abdomen and pelvis. Though the operation was not his most difficult, it captured the public imagination and made him a hero in the girls’ country. Then, one night in 1976, he received a frantic phone call from the twins’ village priest. Alta had choked to death on a kidney bean. Remembers Betty: “He just sat on the side of the bed saying, ‘I don’t believe it.’ ” Koop delivered the eulogy at Alta’s funeral and says now: “You have to take those things in stride. It’s almost as if you’re fated not to be successful.”

It sometimes seemed incongruous that this bear of a man could have been so supremely gentle around his tiny patients. They sparred with him, cried to him, joked with him—and in the end idolized him. He revered them as well, especially his young cancer patients, and prided himself on treating a whole family, not just the patient. “I do not miss operating,” he says now. “I miss meeting a family and finding the point of their anxiety and solving their problems.” After the death of a young patient, Koop would follow up with a phone call, letter or sometimes a visit. The families, touched, would reciprocate. “There were times in my life when I got more Christmas cards from the parents of dead children than the parents of living ones,” says Koop.

His own faith was tested in 1968, when the Koops’ third son, David, 20, a Dartmouth junior, died in a climbing accident in New Hampshire’s White Mountains. “Until that time I felt very comfortable dealing with people whose child was dying,” says Koop, whose voice drops when he talks of his son. “When David died, I thought, ‘Why did this happen to me?’ And I thought to myself, ‘Well, you probably were too smug; now you know what it’s really like to lose a child. Now you’ll be more effective.’ ” It didn’t turn out that way. “The first time I had to sit down with a family I couldn’t even talk to them,” remembers Koop. “My throat was tight, I had tears coming out of my eyes. I just couldn’t do it.” It took months for him to recover most of his professional detachment, he says, “and I never walked into the situation with the same confidence because all the rawness would come back.” (The Koops have three other children: Allen, 42, an associate professor of history at Colby-Sawyer College in New London, N.H.; Norman, 40, a minister in Deer-field Street, N.J., and Elizabeth Thompson, 35, a homemaker on St. Simons Island, Ga. They also have seven grandchildren.)

In the late ’70s, as Koop edged closer toward Children’s Hospital’s mandatory retirement age, he began thinking about his future. The more he thought about it, the less he liked it. Then his second pro-life book (Whatever Happened to the Human Race?) caught the eye of Ronald Reagan’s talent scouts. The bureaucracy seemed an unlikely haven for someone as independent and impatient as Koop. And Surgeon General seemed an unlikely job for a man who eats nothing for lunch (“I’m too busy”) and enjoys a high cholesterol diet otherwise. But friends say the chance to affect the health of the entire country was an irresistible lure for a man with missionary zeal and a hefty ego to match. Says Koop: “What else was I going to do? Become honorary chairman of the Red Cross?”

In fact, he may be working harder now than ever before, if that’s possible. His day begins at 5 a.m., when he rises and prays for about 10 minutes in the suburban Washington home that goes with his job. (His yearly salary is $83,211.) He has two offices—one in Rockville, Md., and the other in downtown Washington—and is usually in one of them by 7:15. Arriving home 12 hours later, when his schedule permits, he sometimes continues his work in his study. Such diligence notwithstanding, Koop hasn’t won over all his detractors. Some say he has not shown strong leadership on issues other than smoking. (On the orders of Reagan Administration higher-ups, who wanted to handle the volatile question themselves, he had been all but silent on the matter of AIDS until this year, when the President ordered him to prepare a major report on the disease.) Others were critical of his involvement in the celebrated Baby Doe case, in which Koop took the flak for controversial federal regulations concerning the care of severely handicapped infants. Koop, as usual, is planning to have the last word. He is keeping a diary of his days on the banks of the Potomac and is hoping to turn it into a book. His Washington exit, like his stormy arrival, should be an occasion that will not go unnoticed.

Max Brantley of the Arkansas Times Blog reprinted a story of a 38 year old later telling his story. She got an abortion when she was 23 for just selfish reasons. The lady identified herself as a Christian.

This lady’s story prompted the person using the username “Polecat” to say this, “There are no such things as egg people. Life begins at birth.”

I replied:

Pole cat says, “There are no such things as egg people. Life begins at birth.”

Most everyone disagrees with you on that. Can you imagine a doctor trying to abort a baby just minutes before it is going to be born?

In the first episode of WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE HUMAN RACE. Dr. C. Everett Koop put forth the question:

My question to the pro-abortionist who would not directly kill a newborn baby the minute it is born is this, “Would you have killed it a minute before that or a minute before that or a minute before that or a minute before that?” You can see what I am getting at. At what minute does an unborn baby cease to be worthless and become a person entitled to the right to life and legal protection?

Taking the roof off

For L’Abri, the brainchild of 20th-century giant Francis Schaeffer, turning 50 is an opportunity to celebrate and revive what is golden in its unique approach to evangelism

Half a century ago, an American pastor named Francis Schaeffer opened his home in Switzerland to anyone who was struggling with the basic questions of life. It was the beginning of L’Abri, a word meaning “shelter.” Over the years, student backpackers, troubled atheists, and thoughtful Christians found their way to this chalet in the Alps. Here they met biblical truth, explained not only with a sophistication that was then rare in evangelicalism-but lived out.

Many who trekked the Alpine hillsides to L’Abri became Christians and learned how to engage their cultures and to apply their faith to all of life. Two generations on, the influence of Francis and Edith Schaeffer and the ministry of L’Abri is evident among evangelical Christians everywhere in their approach not only to evangelism and the church but also to the sciences, arts, business, and politics.

Schaeffer died of cancer in 1984. But L’Abri continues with branches all over the world: in Australia, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, England, Korea, Canada, and two in the United States (in Southborough, Mass., and Rochester, Minn.). These centers for training in Christian philosophy are the legacy of a man who-according to long-time associate and founder of the Francis Schaeffer Institute Jerram Barrs-never considered himself a theologian or philosopher, but simply a pastor and an evangelist.

Schaeffer became a Christian when he was 17, after reading the Bible from beginning to end and finding that it gave answers to questions he struggled with. He studied at Faith Seminary and pastored churches in Delaware, Pennsylvania, and St. Louis.

In St. Louis, Schaeffer and his wife Edith started a ministry, Children for Christ. At the same time, conflicts and schisms in the Presbyterian Church forced him to defend a high view of Scripture against liberal theology. He started the International Council of Christian Churches to counter the World Council of Churches. This took him to Europe, where he settled in Switzerland in 1948.

But L’Abri had its genesis in a spiritual crisis that engulfed Schaeffer in 1950-1951. Depressed by church politics and power struggles, Schaeffer wrestled with the question: “How could people stand for truth and purity and God’s holiness without ugliness and harshness?” He became dissatisfied, too, with his own failures to live out the faith as the Bible describes it, according to Mr. Barrs.

Schaeffer felt these problems so deeply that he began to question whether Christianity, if it has so little effect, could be true. Once again, as he did when he was 17, he plunged into Bible reading in search of answers. He found them, becoming convinced that not only salvation but sanctification and the whole of the Christian’s life are by faith. “The sun came out again,” he said, and he found “a new song in my heart.”

Now, in addition to holding Bible studies in the Schaeffer home and working with children, the Schaeffers began discussion groups for their teenage daughters and friends to hear their questions and to tell about the Bible’s answers.

On June 5, 1955, the Schaeffers drew up a plan to turn their home into a place where people could come to work out their problems and to practice “true spirituality.” Without finances and with no assurance that they would be allowed to stay in Switzerland, the Schaeffers purchased property in Huemoz, a rural village high in the mountains with a spectacular view of the Alps.

Ranald Macaulay, a student at Cambridge who became involved with the Schaeffers in the early days (and later married their daughter Susan), said the founding of L’Abri was consistent with its organizing principle: to live in constant dependence on the grace of God. At a March 11-13 Jubilee for L’Abri Fellowship at the America’s Center in St. Louis, Mr. Macaulay said the Schaeffers resolved to do no advertising for workers, no marketing to attract newcomers, no fundraising, and no planning-principles in stark contrast to most other ministries.

The Schaeffers saw L’Abri as a unique experiment-they did not necessarily recommend this radical dependence on God’s providence as a pattern for other ministries-but the needs always were met. Concerned with reaching individuals, the Schaeffers were content with small numbers. Over time, however, the effect of their work multiplied. Over 1,000 L’Abri alumni attended the jubilee celebration, an event that was equal parts conference and family reunion.

Os Guinness, Harold O.J. Brown, and Chuck Colson-all major evangelical thinkers who were shaped by L’Abri-gave addresses. Screenwriter Brian Godawa, who wrote To End All Wars, gave a workshop on transforming Hollywood. Theologian and cultural critic Vishal Mangalwadi, from India, talked about his upcoming television documentary series on the impact of the Bible, The Book of the Millennium. Book tables overflowed with titles by L’Abri Alumni.

Workshops focused on the various facets of “The Central Themes of L’Abri,” “Transforming All of Life,” and “True Spirituality.” The evenings closed with classical music concerts.

But unlike most idea-packed conferences, the program also scheduled in time for fellowship: an hour and a half devoted to lunch; 30 minutes between sessions; free afternoons and early evenings so people had time to talk. People who had grown close in the Christian community of L’Abri but who had not seen each other for decades hugged and laughed and resumed their conversations. Family members recalled the early days. Mr. Macaulay said the Schaeffers cleared out the furniture, set up chairs, and made elaborate preparations in their chalet, while Schaeffer, wearing a black suit, preached a brilliant sermon-all for three people. Mr. Macaulay remembers thinking, “Oh, if everybody could hear this!” In those days, he said, it was exciting when 10 people showed up at L’Abri.

At first Schaeffer resisted taping the lectures, fearing it would spoil his spontaneity. But one day his daughter Susan surreptitiously hid in an ivy plant a microphone attached to her portable cassette player. The tapes circulated in student groups in England, creating a demand for more tapes and a steady supply of L’Abri pilgrims. Eventually, he turned some of his lectures into books.

More and more people-students, hippies, homosexual priests, drug addicts, and other wanderers trying to “find themselves”-sought out this “shelter” in the mountains. Some stayed for a few weeks, others for several months. By the 1970s, several hundred might be there at a time, staying in chalets built on the expanding property above a switchback mountain road.

Schaeffer exchanged his American preacher’s black suit for lederhosen and a walking stick. He engaged visitors in personal discussions fed also by the growing number of L’Abri workers who joined in the ministry. Visitors took part in the life of the community, eating meals together, doing physical labor, studying the Bible, prizing deep conversations, and walking in the mountains. This remains the pattern today in the L’Abri branches around the world, except that Schaeffer is heard only on tape.

In the course of 50 years, according to Larry Snyder, director of Rochester L’Abri, no one knows how many people went through L’Abri. No one kept records. What mattered then-and is evident now (see sidebar)-is that L’Abri was a life-changing experience.

Schaeffer persuaded nonbelievers to face up to the contradictions in their own worldviews by revealing their inability to account for what is most important in life (love, beauty, meaning). He would, as he described it, “take the roof off,” bringing the nonbeliever almost to the point of despair, to acknowledge his lost condition. Then he applied the gospel of Christ. While conversant in the theology of Kuyper, Dooyeweerd, and Van Til, Schaeffer was captive only to the worldview set forth in the Bible-God’s good creation, man’s fall into sin and its consequences, the redemption through Christ-which he said accords with reality in all of its dimensions. Nonbelievers cannot bring themselves to be completely consistent with their own presuppositions, an inconsistency that is a result of common grace. “Thus, illogically,” he wrote in 1948, “men have in their accepted worldviews various amounts of that which is ours. But, illogical though it may be, it is there and we can appeal to it.”

Even with hostile visitors, Mr. Barrs said, Schaeffer “had an acute sense of people’s brokenness and fallenness,” and “thus would treat them with compassion.”

Out of those encounters grew a body of written work: Escape from Reason (1968), True Spirituality (1971), and He Is There and He Is Not Silent (1972). Schaeffer developed extraordinarily fruitful concepts: how human beings need both “form and freedom”; how people today compartmentalize their lives into a meaningless objective “lower story” (the realm of science and fact) and a mystical, nonrational “upper story” of subjectivity and emotion (which becomes the realm of religion, aesthetics, and morality); how human beings are sinful and broken due to the Fall, yet how at the same time human beings have an intrinsic value and dignity, bearing the image of God.

Those concepts-fueled by practical discussions and communal living at L’Abri-quickly gathered public momentum. Before L’Abri, many conservative Protestants had no problem with legalizing abortion, considering it a Catholic issue and responding out of a knee-jerk anti-Catholicism. But the Schaeffers showed that abortion-along with the growing acceptance of euthanasia and the coming genetic engineering-constitutes a horrible assault on all that it means to be human. With the book and video series How Should We Then Live? (1976) and Whatever Happened to the Human Race? (1979), Schaeffer’s ideas spread to a broader audience. With A Christian Manifesto (1981), he called evangelicals to the fight against abortion and to political activism to reverse what he saw as the trend toward both moral anarchy and political tyranny.

Such an extended ministry was a partnership with Schaeffer’s wife. “If time allowed, a whole seminar could be devoted to the work of Edith Schaeffer,” author and L’Abri alum Os Guinness told the jubilee crowd. Health problems, including a deteriorating esophagus, prevented Schaeffer’s wife Edith, 92, from attending the St. Louis jubilee. Always an active part of L’Abri and an author herself, she is currently in a Swiss hospital. There, according to Udo Middleman, husband to Schaeffer daughter Debbie, the family is battling the very dangers Schaeffer described as family members insist on active treatment and care for Mrs. Schaeffer against a European medical establishment that is content to withhold treatment and to allow her simply to die.

Those struggles only emphasize that, in many ways, the culture of relativism, irrationalism, and self-centeredness that Schaeffer anticipated is here. “Postmodernists are so focused on I, me, myself that they have trouble focusing on any thing beyond themselves,” said L’Abri Australia leader Frank Stootman. And yet, he said, the Schaeffer method of taking people with their presuppositions to their logical conclusions and showing the superiority of a biblical worldview is still effective.

Per Staffan Johansson, of L’Abri in Sweden, told WORLD that seekers today are less philosophical than they were in the 1960s. Instead of wrestling with questions about the meaning of life and other objective truth, they are more preoccupied with problems of relationships and the meaning of their jobs and professions. “We do more in Sweden with vocation,” he said. “And yet, this is what L’Abri has always done,” relating faith to all of life.

Mr. Guinness said that “the genius of Schaeffer’s apologetics has yet to be fully unwrapped.” When asked about reaching the culture, Mr. Guinness said that one of Schaeffer’s great insights is that we have to reach not cultures but individuals. Each individual has his or her own questions, personal struggles, and moral brokenness. Schaeffer took them all seriously, addressing people one by one, while giving them-sometimes for the first time-a sense of belonging to a community.

Many approaches to evangelism and church growth today are impersonal, relying on manipulative formulas and the techniques of mass marketing and consumerism. L’Abri honors the dignity and the distinct spiritual needs of each individual. Many evangelicals think Christianity needs to be dumbed down and made easier to make it attractive to people today. L’Abri teaches that Christianity has substance and depth, that it has something to offer to thoughtful, educated people, and that-undiluted-biblical Christianity can change their lives.

Fifty years later, evangelicalism once again faces the problem of being negative or ineffectual, worldly, or out of touch. L’Abri remains.
