Open letter to President Obama (Part 643)

(Emailed to White House on 6-5-13.)

President Obama c/o The White House 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW Washington, DC 20500

Dear Mr. President,

I know that you receive 20,000 letters a day and that you actually read 10 of them every day. I really do respect you for trying to get a pulse on what is going on out here. I know that you don’t agree with my pro-life views but I wanted to challenge you as a fellow Christian to re-examine your pro-choice view.

Many in the world today are taking a long look at the abortion industry because of the May 14, 2013 guilty verdict and life term penalty handed down by a jury (which included 9 out of 12 pro-choice jurors)  to Dr. Kermit Gosnell. During this time of reflection I wanted to put forth some of the pro-life’s best arguments.

In the film series “WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE HUMAN RACE?” the arguments are presented  against abortion (Episode 1),  infanticide (Episode 2),   euthanasia (Episode 3), and then there is a discussion of the Christian versus Humanist worldview concerning the issue of “the basis for human dignity” in Episode 4 and then in the last episode a close look at the truth claims of the Bible.

I truly believe that many of the problems we have today in the USA are due to the advancement of humanism in the last few decades in our society. Ronald Reagan appointed the evangelical Dr. C. Everett Koop to the position of Surgeon General in his administration. He partnered with Dr. Francis Schaeffer in making the video below. It is very valuable information for Christians to have.  Actually I have included a video below that includes comments from him on this subject.

What Would Jesus Tweet About Kermit Gosnell? / By Erik Koliser

April 17, 2013 By Leave a Comment

Many evangelical Christians, pro-lifers and political conservatives are currently celebrating like New England Patriots’ party boy, Rob Gronkowski at a Las Vegas night club. And rightfully so for these conservatives “blew up” (as Business Insider puts it) the trial of abortionist, Kermit Gosnell for the last 3-4 days finally bringing this atrocious crime and trial into the spotlight and media mainstream. I guess you could say that I should be dancing with them as a fellow pro-lifer who tweeted about the media blackout several times over the last couple days with a similar agenda in mind. However, if I can be completely transparent with my evangelical, conservative friends, I find myself hesitant to do any type of fist pumping or body slamming with this so-called pro-life victory and the reason why is because of a flashback conversation I once had with a fellow Christian pro-lifer.

Let me make a few things clear before sharing this conversation. I believe that life starts at conception (Psalm 119:13,16) and that abortion is murder. I believe we live in a culture that somewhat celebrates death, or is at least immune to it, and that Christians need to celebrate life and children by all means necessary. Lazy, irresponsible, sinful, and poor excuses for men knock up their women and bully them into abortions. Selfish, idolatrous women choose to sacrifice their children in abortion so they don’t have to sacrifice their future dreams and comfortable lifestyles. Cruel, heartless doctors kill innocent babies as Satan deceives them into thinking that they are just helping their mothers.

Abortionist Kermit Gosnell, represents this and much more, as the gruesome details continue to come out in his trial. This is part of the reason why I got so excited when entering into a conversation with a fellow pro-life Christian about the things other Christians were doing to stop abortion in my city at the time and share the gospel with those who were thinking about going through with the procedure. That was until I heard the tone and attitude that this Christian portrayed when they talked about people who actually went through with the abortions. Their demeanor, tone, and words were callous, hateful, and lacked any type of compassion as the person said they did nothing for the people walking out. They spoke with grace, love, and mercy when talking to people who didn’t go through with abortions but the doctors and women who followed through with the murder of their child formerly in the womb… well, they didn’t seem to deserve that same type of grace, love, and mercy that the ones who chose life, even if the ones who chose death were blind in doing so.

The reason why this conversation, and at times the pro-life and other political movements can irk me, is not because of what they stand for, but usually what they end up fighting for in sacrifice of the gospel. Now I very well know I may be stepping on some toes here and I don’t want any pro-life Christians to misconstrue my words. I’m not cowering on issues that the Bible has made clear and I’m not afraid to call abortion murder, whether it’s in the first, second, or third trimester. I have mentioned how abortion is a sin in sermons and believe that Christians should take strong steps to reverse Roe v. Wade. I’m pro-life, but even more so pro-gospel, and sometimes the politics and emotions that carry over on this issue can be anything but a reflection of the gospel. And I’m sorry, but I can’t but help to think what Jesus would tweet in 140 characters or end his blog post with concerning these issues after reading His words with the Samaritan woman at the well, or the apostle Paul, after killing one of God’s children.

Abortion, which many look at as a social justice issue is really a gospel issue because every true social justice issue is truly a gospel issue. For example, it’s hard having faith in a Creator when you’re unrepentant to what He considers as His creation. The sacrifice of our Heavenly Father’s Son on the cross for our own sin becomes unthinkable to a parent who sacrifices their own child for their own sin. A culture that is blind to death and justifies murder will have a hard time seeing the beauty of life and wanting a resurrected life. Abortion is obviously a Gospel issue but not when the fight against abortion goes against other critical, important parts of the Gospel, specifically God’s picture of grace. And this lack of compassion and ignorance of grace is exactly why I’m semi-scared of where Christians will land when all of this Kermit Gosnell trial & media stuff boils over and the cards are shuffled into place.

It is God’s grace in the gospel, the good news that Jesus loves and died for the worst of sinners and will forgive us, that will justify us and reconcile us to a Holy God when we didn’t do anything to deserve this love or earn it that is simply unbelievable to a world in desperate need of salvation. It’s also the very thing that makes Christianity stand out from all other so-called religions. Of course, this all happens when hearing the gospel and responding to it in repentance and faith but the sad thing is that when I read all of the tweets, Facebook updates, and blog posts about Kermit Gosnell and abortion, the last thing I see is any type of desire or hope that repentance and faith would happen to Kermit Gosnell or anyone who defends abortion, late-term or not.

In fact, in the midst of this social-media-Kermit-Gosnell-storm, Brennan Manning, author of The Ragamuffin Gospel, died and I remember thinking how hypocritical us Christians looked as we tweeted out hatred for Kermit but honor for a man who would’ve said Kermit is exactly who Jesus would’ve loved.

That conversation with the pro-life, conservative Christian who didn’t want to try to reach the women walking out of the abortion clinics but only the women walking into the abortion clinic left a bad taste in my mouth because that person and many other Christians forget that the gospel is for the worst of sinners in which many of them consider abortionists to be in that category of.  Pro-lifers can lose that spirit of compassion in their call to save the physical in sacrifice for the spiritual.

As a former server in several restaurants, I had several conversations with co-workers who had abortions, many who would now admit they were wrong. As I shared the gospel with them and loved on them, they just couldn’t get past what other Christians had said and how they made them feel when going through with those abortions. In fact, it was only a month ago where I attended a pro-life breakfast where a great Christian organization that rallies churches in helping stop abortions from being done in their own community and a similar concern for the “worst of sinners” came up. After hearing the compelling call for action in churches to stand outside of the abortion clinic and try to stop women from walking in, and if possible, share the Gospel with them, a pastor in the room mentioned how he believed there was a fine line in telling these ladies truth about their decisions but also doing it in a way that will turn them off to anything Jesus has to say outside of conception and murder. He then told a story from his own congregation where a woman that’s been visiting his church for years and won’t give her life to Christ because of how other pro-life Christians treated her in the previous city that she lived in when they found out about her abortion. We all know that could be an excuse for this woman but I’m sure we’ve all seen our fair share of pro-life Christians who allowed their emotions to get the best of them when trying to fight for justice and end up looking unjust because of how they represented God’s grace and compassion in their words and actions.

I believe we can easily lose sight of God’s compassion for sinners and His grace in the gospel when we sometimes fight against an abortion culture. We brought awareness to the Kermit Gosnell trial and God’s desire for justice but have we magnified his heart for the worst of sinners as well? Right now, pro-lifers have the chance of a lifetime to show the atrocity of abortion. But will we error so far to the side of telling people “I told you it was murder” that we’ll forget to say that we love those who murder because Jesus loved them first.

1 Peter 4:7-8 says,

The end of all things is at hand; therefore be self-controlled and sober-minded for the sake of your prayers. 8 Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins.”

But we can’t love people enough for their sins to be covered because we’re so focused on exposing these sins.

As Christians, part of our purpose in this culture of death is not to just save the physical lives of babies and women but to win people over to the gospel. Only then are we bringing that who are spiritually dead to life and that’s where the real culture war is won. I’m not saying we should exactly stop in the ways we’re fighting or bringing awareness to the consequences of abortion, but that we need to do a better job in championing grace along with justice that comes along with the gospel. The church has been in awkward positions before where they have to choose between fighting for justice while using certain questionable ethics or trying to share the gospel and allowing changed hearts to change policies and societies as a whole, and again, I’m not saying that we have to choose one or the other but both.

That’s why I’m not saying that we need to exactly stop protesting clinics, fighting for reversal of policies, or calling out the media for biased reporting for a pro-choice agenda. I’m just arguing that we need to show the light of God’s grace in the gospel just as much as we are trying to expose what is being done in the dark of the abortion culture. After all, it’s called scandalous grace for a reason and it doesn’t get any more scandalous than a bunch of sinners saved by grace saying that they love Kermit Gosnell despite his murderous ways and hope that he comes to a point where he repents and has faith in a Savior who will give him life out of his culture of death.

My personal prayers have shifted as I hope for justice on earth with all of those innocent babies and deceived mothers, but also with a different type of justice for those sinful souls who have been involved. A type of justice that is served with Jesus’ death on the cross in a great exchange for those who were unrighteous to become righteous, instead of the blood many of us Christians will call for concerning abortion and murder in Revelation 21:7-8. After all, us liars and idolaters are right there with Kermit Gosnell until the Grace of God we did not deserve was poured out on us.

I know, I know… how can we talk about giving grace and forgiving the people who kept severed baby feet in jars, fetuses in the refrigerator next to their lunches, and actually beheaded live born babies in the name of abortion? Bob Goff, Author of book Love Does, asked a similar question when standing face to face with a certain man in prison several years ago. Bob Goff, who I like to call “the Christian Dos Equis man” because of the crazy unbelievable adventures he’s been on, prosecuted the very first witch doctor in the country of Uganda. These witch doctors would cut off little boy’s penises in hopes that the sacrifice would please their false god. Villagers were too afraid to charge and prosecute these witch doctors for their inhumane acts against children but Bob Goff stood up for them. He even adopted one of the child victims. After charging, arresting, and prosecuting the very witch doctor who cut off the penis of his adopted son, Bob stood face to face with the witch doctor as he told Bob that he’s not worthy of forgiveness.

Bob knew it was God opening up a door to share the gospel but actually agreed with the witch doctor wanting this man to receive wrath over grace. Bob begrudgingly shared the gospel with him and the witch doctor ended up getting saved, to the conviction of Mr. Goff in his hatred toward this man for what he did to his son in this past. This witch doctor was given a platform in his Uganda jail to not only share the gospel with other prisoners but lead them to Christ, and Bob still visits the former witch doctor, now brother in Christ, in this Ugandan prison. The same scandalous grace that this witch doctor received is the same grace the abortion culture should be hearing from us, even if we don’t think they deserve it because it’s in the way of our political purposes.

It would mean loving on the women walking out of the abortion clinic just as much as we are trying to stop them from going into the abortion clinic.

It would mean hoping and praying for Kermit Gosnell to come to Christ just as much as we hope and pray that the liberal media will start covering his murder trial.

It would mean ending some tweets, Facebook posts, and blog articles about Kermit Gosnell and the abortion culture with a simple reminder that these people need Jesus more than exposure and laws in place to make what they do illegal, and that sometimes the best way to back up the words of the gospel is our actions of compassion and love.

It’s letting the world know that a great injustice was done on 3801 Lancaster St., but that justice is not just served in the courthouse, or on the front page of the newspaper, but sometimes with a God who puts that just punishment and sentence on His own perfect, righteous Son in order to free and forgive those who are guilty and deserved that punishment.

It’s preaching the gospel in grace along with a gospel in justice.

Open letter to President Obama (Part 641) Pro-life atheist Nat Hentoff: With Obama you will get more abortions!!!

Open letter to President Obama (Part 641)

(Emailed to White House on 6-12-13.)

Although we are both Christians and have the Bible as the basis for our moral views, I did want you to take a close look at the views of the pro-life atheist Nat Hentoff too.  Hentoff became convinced of the pro-life view because of secular evidence that shows that the unborn child is human. I would ask you to consider his evidence and then of course reverse your views on abortion.

Pro-life atheist Nat Hentoff: With Obama you will get more abortions!!!

Nat Hentoff is an atheist, but he became a pro-life activist because of the scientific evidence that shows that the unborn child is a distinct and separate human being and even has a separate DNA. His perspective is a very intriguing one that I thought you would be interested in. I have shared before many   cases (Bernard Nathanson, Donald Trump, Paul Greenberg, Kathy Ireland)    when other high profile pro-choice leaders have changed their views and this is just another case like those. I have contacted the White House over and over concerning this issue and have even received responses. I am hopeful that people will stop and look even in a secular way (if they are not believers) at this abortion debate and see that the unborn child is deserving of our protection. That is why the writings of Nat Hentoff of the Cato Institute are so crucial.

HENTOFF: New president, more abortions

Nat Hentoff

The Washington Times – Washington, DC
11/24/2008

OP-ED:Our new president-elect has not equivocated in his reverence for abortion rights. Speaking at a Planned Parenthood event on July 17, 2007, Barack Obama pledged that his first act as president would be to sign the Freedom of Choice Act. It is the most radical attack yet on the deep beliefs of millions of American pro-lifers.As Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer, a champion of the bill, exulted: “Women would have the absolute right to choose whether to continue or terminate their pregnancies before fetal viability, and that right would be protected by this legislation. The Freedom of Choice Act also supersedes any law, regulation or local ordinance that impinges on a woman’s right to choose,” she said. With regard to “fetal viability” – the ability to survive on his or her own – the ardent supporters of FOCA slide over the language in the surviving 2007 version of FOCA bill that, as Douglas Johnson of the National Right to Life Committee points out, “contains no objective criteria for ‘viability,’ but rather, requires that the judgment regarding ‘viability’ be left entirely in the hands of ‘the attending physician.’ “Guess who that would be? The abortionist! There’s more. The restrictions on “the absolute right to choose” would also apply even after “viability” if a woman wanted to abort what would undeniably be seen during pregnancy as a baby in ultrasound for reasons of her health. But the Supreme Court in 1973 (the same year as Roe v. Wade) in Doe v. Bolton defined very broadly “health” justification for aborting a viable human being, as “physical, emotional, psychological, familial and the woman’s age.” This was nearly a blank check to dispose of that aborted person. It’s no wonder that Mr. Obama opposed the Supreme Court decision that eventually ruled against the lawfulness of “partial-birth abortion,” which the late Democratic Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan (who was pro-choice) said was infanticide.

The rabidly pro-abortion Freedom of Choice Act Mr. Obama supports would – unless there is an unlikely successful filibuster in the Democratic controlled Senate – invalidate parental-notification laws; any state’s requirement of full disclosure of the physical and emotional risks inherent in abortion; and (can you believe this?) all laws prohibiting medical personnel other than licensed physicians from performing abortions because such restrictions might “interfere” with access to this absolute right to abortion.

This is respect for women? As of now, before our abortion president gets his wish, 26 states have informed-consent laws, 36 have parental-involvement laws and 34 states have restrictions on funding for abortions.

Also disposed of will be the “conscience rights” in many states. They include, Mr. Johnson reminds us, “all laws allowing doctors, nurses or other state-licensed professionals, and hospitals or other health care providers, to decline to provide or pay for abortions.” What about religiously based hospitals and clinics that refuse to perform abortions? At presidential press conferences, can we depend on at least some members of the Washington press corps to ask Mr. Obama about that provision or the others I’ve cited? Sen. Dianne Feinstein, California Democrat, heralded the election of Mr. Obama as “a new birth of freedom.” Not, however, for the early-stage human beings – each with his or her own distinct DNA – who, under this law, could never become citizens.

Matt Bowman, an attorney with the pro-life Alliance Defense Fund, projects that if FOCA is passed into law (Lifenews.com, Sept. 24), there will be an increase in abortion “by 125,000 per year” in the United States because of the abolition of laws in states that have parental involvement, informed-consent laws and funding restrictions. “Even with this minimum,” Mr. Bowman adds, “that’s 125,000 children that were not killed this year because we (still) have these laws, and 125,000 (added to the existing 1.3 million abortions) who will be killed in 2009” and beyond.

On Jan. 22, 2008, the 35th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, Mr. Obama said with pride: “Throughout my career, I’ve been a consistent and strong supporter of reproductive justice and have consistently had a 100 percent pro-choice rating with Planned Parenthood and NARAL Pro-Choice America … To truly honor (Roe v. Wade), we need to update the social contract so that women can free themselves and their children from violent relationships.”

What, Mr. President, can be more violent than murder by abortion? Alveda King, niece of Dr. Martin Luther King, said on Nov. 11 (Lifenews.com) that “his dream of full equality remains just a dream as long as unborn children continue to be treated no better than property. The elections are over. The pro-life battle begins anew.”

Nat Hentoff’s column for The Washington Times appears on Mondays.

Thank you so much for your time. I know how valuable it is. I also appreciate the fine family that you have and your commitment as a father and a husband. Now after presenting the secular approach of Nat Hentoff I wanted to make some comments concerning our shared Christian faith.  I  respect you for putting your faith in Christ for your eternal life. I am pleading to you on the basis of the Bible to please review your religious views concerning abortion. It was the Bible that caused the abolition movement of the 1800’s and it also was the basis for Martin Luther King’s movement for civil rights and it also is the basis for recognizing the unborn children.

“Schaeffer Sunday” Abortion debating with Ark Times Bloggers Part 13 “Is it a choice or a child?” and a Heritage Foundation article on 2013 March for Life (includes film THE BASIS FOR HUMAN DIGNITY and editorial cartoon)

I have debated with Ark Times Bloggers many times in the past on many different subjects. Abortion is probably the most often debated subject and I have noticed that many pro-life individuals are now surfacing on the Arkansas Times Blog.  Here are some examples. Arhogfan501 asserted: This is the beginning of the end for recreational abortion in Arkansas. Songbird777 noted: Babies have a right to live and not be chopped up for someone else’s convenience. The person using the username “baker” commented: Planned Parenthood (PPA) does not nor cannot provide mammograms, indeed no affiliate has the necessary license. PPA is an abortion provider and at some 900 plus killings a day rather prolific.

Here is another debate I got into recently on the Arkansas Times Blog and I go by the username “Saline Republican”:

____________

A blogger using the username “Steve E” asserted:

I know of the case histories of some of those, and Tiller did have a niche market. He and one other doctor took on the challenge, but it was a lucrative challenge, and not all those late term abortions were so medically needed. A million a year is pretty good whampum for plunging a knife in the skull of an infant.

Like most, I was aghast at the murder. You change laws, not kill doctors. I was no fan of abortion, but I stood at the doors of some of the clinics in Glendale, Kali to keep the entrances clear. Sometimes I had to get rough to ensure the women entering the building was not hurt.

I may not have believed in abortion, but I believed enough in the choice of the individual to fight for it, to defend it.

But I refuse to be lied to by zealots that say it isn’t murder, that there isn’t something wrong about it, and that Tiller made millions and THAT was the guiding principle.

I replied:

Steven E you need to listen to your own words and then weigh them. This is what you said:
“I lean towards giving the woman the choice, even up to birth, just do not lie to me when you say a fetus is not a baby, or a living person. There is that time, if a woman doesn’t get on the stick and take her MorningAfter pill when she is killing a baby. I don’t believe in taking the choice away from her, I just don’t want to perpetuate a lie, either. Admit that things like parital birth abortions are abominations, and the doctors that do it, do it for money, not some high calling.”
_________

Most liberals argue that the unborn baby is not a human deserving the protection of our laws. It seems that you are saying that even if the unborn baby “a living person” at some point during the 9 months leading up to birth but you “don’t believe in taking the choice away from her” concerning abortion and then you flip back and say “that things like partial birth abortions are abominations.”

Let me try and get you to clarify this a little bit so I don’t go away misunderstanding you.

Are advocating abortion rights over human rights? Prochoice advocate Elizabeth Williams came out and said that on 1-23-13 in her article on Salon. Maybe you agree with her? DO YOU AGREE WITH HER? I AM GOING TO DO SOMETHING THAT I HAVE DONE BEFORE AND THAT IS I AM GOING TO PUT A LONG PASSAGE FROM A PRO-CHOICE ADVOCATE:

The “life” conversation is often too thorny to even broach. Yet I know that throughout my own pregnancies, I never wavered for a moment in the belief that I was carrying a human life inside of me. I believe that’s what a fetus is: a human life. And that doesn’t make me one iota less solidly pro-choice….

Here’s the complicated reality in which we live: All life is not equal. That’s a difficult thing for liberals like me to talk about, lest we wind up looking like death-panel-loving, kill-your-grandma-and-your-precious-baby storm troopers. Yet a fetus can be a human life without having the same rights as the woman in whose body it resides. She’s the boss. Her life and what is right for her circumstances and her health should automatically trump the rights of the non-autonomous entity inside of her. Always.

When we on the pro-choice side get cagey around the life question, it makes us illogically contradictory. I have friends who have referred to their abortions in terms of “scraping out a bunch of cells” and then a few years later were exultant over the pregnancies that they unhesitatingly described in terms of “the baby” and “this kid.” I know women who have been relieved at their abortions and grieved over their miscarriages. Why can’t we agree that how they felt about their pregnancies was vastly different, but that it’s pretty silly to pretend that what was growing inside of them wasn’t the same? Fetuses aren’t selective like that. They don’t qualify as human life only if they’re intended to be born.

When we try to act like a pregnancy doesn’t involve human life, we wind up drawing stupid semantic lines in the sand: first trimester abortion vs. second trimester vs. late term, dancing around the issue trying to decide if there’s a single magic moment when a fetus becomes a person. Are you human only when you’re born? Only when you’re viable outside of the womb? Are you less of a human life when you look like a tadpole than when you can suck on your thumb?

__________
I am tempted to give the whole pro-choice article but I will stop and just give you the link:

________________

I truly believe that many of the problems we have today in the USA are due to the advancement of humanism in the last few decades in our society. Ronald Reagan appointed the evangelical Dr. C. Everett Koop to the position of Surgeon General in his administration. He partnered with Dr. Francis Schaeffer in making the video below. It is very valuable information for Christians to have.  Actually I have included a video below that includes comments from him on this subject.

In the film series “WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE HUMAN RACE?” the arguments are presented  against abortion (Episode 1),  infanticide (Episode 2),   euthenasia (Episode 3), and then there is a discussion of the Christian versus Humanist worldview concerning the issue of “the basis for human dignity” in Episode 4 and then in the last episode a close look at the truth claims of the Bible.

Many liberals actually truly do argue for abortion rights over human rights. Prochoice advocate Elizabeth Williams came out and said that on 1-23-13 in her article on Salon. We hear reasons for abortion such as poverty, and  child abuse,  but why not consider adoption? Instead, the political left will stop at nothing to push the pro-abortion agenda. Why not stop and take an honest look at when life begins for the unborn child and when she begins to feel pain?

For the past 40 years, pro-life advocates from all over the country annually march in solidarity to raise awareness for the most vulnerable in society—the unborn. Without fail, the 40th anniversary March for Life brought large crowds to the National Mall today in the hope of securing the right to life for all.

Heritage’s president-elect, Jim DeMint, understands the importance of the right to life and has always been a strong advocate for the pro-life movement.

“Over the past four decades we have seen countless victories upholding respect for human life and dignity,” he says in Heritage’s new video. “Courageous pro-life policymakers and compassionate ministries such as pregnancy care centers together made great strides to protect unborn life. They moved the hearts and minds of an entire generation.”

The rally brought thousands of people—especially many from the millennial generation. From grade schools to universities all over the country, hundreds of students took a stand on this human rights threat. Kristan Hawkins, the executive director of Students for Life in America, was handing out signs to all the youth that stated, “I AM THE PRO-LIFE GENERATION.” Students and young people held those signs proudly as they faced the bitter cold.

What does this mean for the future? As Heritage’s Sarah Torre wrote, “Today, roughly half of Americans now identify themselves as ‘pro-life,’ including many of the millennial generation who will make up the crowds at today’s march. More than 100 pro-life laws have been passed in states across the country since 2010, including parental notification, informed consent, and abortion clinic regulation legislation.”

These strides and the dedication of rising generations point to a hopeful future for America’s most vulnerable.

“Sanctity of Life Saturday” Pro-life Atheist Nat Hentoff: “Without exception, Physicians emphasize that human life is a continuum–from the implantation of a fertilized egg in the uterine lining to birth to death”

Beyond the ‘rehearsed response’

by Nat Hentoff
The Village Voice, January 30, 1996

I read my fellow columnist Adolph Reed Jr. with interest and sometimes find him illuminating. But when he writes with what W.H. Auden used to call a ”rehearsed response”–rather than independent research–he is disappointingly ordinary.

In a recent Voice column, Professor Reed–he is a tenured savant at Northwestern University–elegantly described me as having a ”fetus fetish.” The professor went on to declare unequivocally that ”a fetus is not a human being, it’s an organism growing inside the body, albeit an organism with the potential to become a human being.”

Since he or she (even fetuses have genders) has not yet been admitted into our protected circle, it’s okay to kill him or her.

I am familiar with the argument, being confronted with this rationale for abortion when I speak on the subject at colleges–including Princeton, Brown, the Columbia University Law School, Harvard, and other campuses.

Invariably, I am invited to address these largely hostile audiences by a small, hardy group of prolifers who present me as an oddity for their side–somewhat like the two-headed boy in the carnival.

They have spread the word beforehand that I am an atheist civil libertarian who writes for that prochoice bastion, The Village Voice. They add that my writings make clear that my views have far more in common with the teachings of justices William Brennan and Thurgood Marshall than with those of the Christian Coalition’s Ralph Reed, whom I consider an enemy of the Bill of Rights.

So what the hell am I doing with a fetus fetish–particularly since Margot, my wife of many years, is unswervingly prochoice?

I begin my talks to students and faculty eager to dissect my heresy with a quote from the second edition of a standard medical textbook, The Unborn Patient: Prenatal Diagnosis and Treatment, published by W.B. Saunders Company, a division of Harcourt Brace, in 1991. The editors–all medical school professors at the University of California at San Francisco and experts in fetal treatment–are Michael Harrison, Mitchell Golbus, and Roy Filly.

God is nowhere mentioned in the textbook. The first chapter begins: ”The concept that the fetus is a patient, an individual whose maladies are a proper subject for medical treatment as well as scientific observation, is alarmingly modern. Only now are we beginning to consider the fetus seriously–medically, legally, and ethically.”

In recent years I’ve interviewed a number of physicians engaged in research on prenatal development. Without exception, they emphasize that human life is a continuum–from the implantation of a fertilized egg in the uterine lining to birth to death. Setting up divisions of this process to justify abortion –as in Roe v. Wade–is artificial. It’s a denial of biology. Whether in the fourth or 14th week, it is the life of a developing human being that is being killed. The American Medical News (June 20, 1994)–a weekly publication of the American Medical Association–has reported an analysis of the beginnings of human life by Dr. C. Ward Kischer, a professor in the department of anatomy at the University of Arizona College of Medicine. I commend it to Professor Reed:

”Every point in time is part of a continuum. Therefore, every point in development derives its significance from the previous point. Scientific ‘spin doctors’ have invented and promoted such bogus biology as ‘pre-embryo’ and ‘stages of individuality,’ and have duped many physicians who know little about human embryology. Many of them are now using this pseudo-science to justify human embryo experimentation. The Nuremberg trials settled this question conclusively.”

The Nuremberg trials were concerned solely with human beings, as I am.

In the February 18, 1990, Journal of the American Medical Association, Dr. Joel Hylton, a physician in Thomasville, North Carolina, who had people like Adolph Reed Jr. in mind, wrote:

”Who can say that the fetus is not alive and is not a separate genetic entity? Its humanity…also cannot be questioned scientifically. It is certainly of no other species. That it is dependent on another makes it qualitatively no different from countless other humans outside the womb.” (Emphasis added.)

Dr. Hylton added: ”It strikes me that to argue that one may take an innocent life to preserve the quality of life of another is cold and carries utilitarianism to an obscene extreme. Nowhere else in our society is this permitted or even thinkable–although abortion sets a frightening prospect.”

In 1975, Margot Hentoff wrote a piece on abortion in the Voice that created a great deal of comment, most of it savagely critical. Then, as now, she was for abortion rights. Then, as now, she was an admirer of George Orwell and shunned euphemisms. In any context, she does not turn away from–in William Burroughs’s phrase–”the naked lunch at the end of the fork.” To say the least, she is a challenge to live with and has made me more honest than I would have been otherwise.

In the Voice, Margot wrote:

”Here we have one of the problems created by the liberal community’s obfuscation of language in refusing to speak plainly about what abortion is.

”They have held on to the illogical concept that the fetus is not a human being, that no killing is involved, and that an abortion is merely an operative procedure on a woman who has the right to decide what she wants to do with her body and the products thereof.”

In the October 16, 1995, New Republic, Naomi Wolf, also strongly prochoice, wrote: ”Many pro-choice advocates developed a language to assert that the fetus isn’t a person, and this, over the years, has developed into a lexicon of dehumanization….

”How can we charge that it is vile and repulsive for pro-lifers to brandish vile and repulsive images if the images are real?”

In the past I have spent most of my time looking at this issue from the spiritual side.

I read lots of Francis Schaeffer and Dr. C. Everett Koop’s books and watched their films in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s as did Keith and Melody Green. Below Melody Green quotes some of this same material that was used by Schaeffer and Koop in their film series WHATEVER HAPPENED TO HUMAN RACE?

Abortion: Avenues For Action

Melody Green and Sharon Bennett

Avenues for ActionHopefully this list of things you can do will be a real help as you seek the Lord about how you can stand with Him against abortion. If you haven’t already read “Abortion: Attitudes For Action”, please read it. It’s not only important to find out what to do, but also the attitude of heart in which to do it.

“Sometimes the intensity of God’s truth revealed through the Newsletter is difficult for us to hear, and such is the case with your past and present stand on abortion. Up until this point, all we’ve done is sit back and complain. This just doesn’t cut it any more. We know the Lord would have us do something, but we’ve never had the guts. We just can’t sit idly by. Babies are dying NOW!!

“Please send whatever information you have on anti-abortion strategy. We want to be involved as those who love the Lord Jesus and, like Him, are grieved by the effects of sin on the innocent gifts of His love.”

-Michael Henry, Reynoldsburg, OH

Pray

Your first impulse might be to skip over this one and get to the reallypractical things you can do, but you’ll be making a big mistake. Any good done in the name of the Lord must be done in the strength and the absolute direction of the Spirit of God. God honors the prayers of the saints today as He has from the very beginning. Only eternity will tell what humble and earnest prayer has done to rock kingdoms. Make it a point to intercede for the innocent babies and the young women considering abortion. Pray for all in authority – and that men and women of God will be elected at all levels of leadership. Also, pray that any godless officials in public leadership will either have a change of heart or that God will remove them from their positions.

Offer Practical Assistance

“If a brother or sister is without clothing and in need of daily food, and one of you says to them, ‘Go in peace, be warmed and be filled,’ and yet you do not give them what is necessary for their body, what use is that?” (James 2:15-16. NASB)

Just telling a girl not to abort her baby isn’t enough. You need to give her an alternative. Check with your local problem pregnancy center and see what you can do to help. There are always basic things needed such as housing for the girls, finances, maternity and baby clothes, electrical, carpentry, or maintenance work, etc. Volunteer some time to their Hot-Line or do some office work. Donate your services. You may be able to offer valuable assistance through your business or profession – you’d be surprised how many different needs there are!

“I’ve always been concerned about the issue of abortion, but I never got involved. Then I got a copy of your tract. Nothing, but nothing could have prepared me for the picture inside. I cried, l got angry, and I resolved then and there to get involved and help in whatever way I could.

“My husband is supporting me and we’re preparing to take one or two unwed mothers into our home. Thank you! If it wasn’t for you, I may never have gotten involved.”

-Katrine DeFever, Santa Rosa, CA

Inform Other Christians

If your church or fellowship isn’t already involved, approach your pastor about some sort of awareness program. You can use literature, video tapes, slides, or invite speakers in. You’d be amazed how many church kids wind up in abortion clinics, and sometimes it’s their pastor or parents who actually send them there. See if you can give a presentation to your church or Sunday School class. Ask God for the opportunity and He will open the doors.

Every church or fellowship should have homes and people available to help unwed mothers.

Inform the General Public

Ask the Lord for some creative ways to open people’s eyes to the realities of abortion, and the alternatives available. Buy billboard space, run newspaper ads, write articles or “letters to the editor,” give speeches, write songs, inform your school.

“Just a note to thank you for your abortion tracts! When my Health Education professor announced a debate on abortion, a friend gave me the tracts to use. And use them I did! I was the only one able to give names, numbers, dates and stick to them!” -Lisa Silver, Winchester, VA

Distribute Literature

“We were able to distribute approximately 18,000 tracts on abortion in two days, through picket lines at abortion clinics and at road-blocks at major intersections of our city. Our greatest blessing was seeing 20-30 girls change their minds about getting an abortion, some even received the Lord!! -Teresa Everett, Pensacola, FL

You can distribute tracts at clinics, hospitals, doctors’ offices, schools, and libraries. You can even leave them in public restrooms! The idea is to get the word out.

You can blitz your city! You can organize your friends or fellowship to place one or both of our tracts on abortion into every home in your area. We helped distribute the tract “Children – Things We Throw Away?” to almost every home in Tyler, Texas, population 70,000. It was done in one full day with about 250 volunteers. The city was divided into sections and each section leader had group leaders under him. The section leaders provided transportation and patrolled their areas while the tracts were being distributed. The group leaders had a map of the city with their area clearly designated. The streets in each section were divided among those in his group and they went out in two’s. It’s not legal to put tracts in mail boxes, but it’s okay to slip them under a door, affix them to a doorknob, or slide them between the door and a screen door. Since the main purpose is getting information into each home, this doesn’t involve sharing personally with individuals (except as the Lord leads), since this can be quite time consuming. The response to this action has been tremendous and we really feel it is a worthwhile endeavor. Other groups have done this in their cities as well.

Write Letters

Let your representatives in Congress know how you feel. This is something anyone can do and it’s very important. For every letter received inWashington, DC, they figure thousands of people feel the same way. If there’s one thing that most politicians really stand up and notice, it’s votes.

Sidewalk Assistance

“Thank you so much for sending the tracts `Children – Things We Throw Away?’ We’ve been doing street counseling in front of an abortion clinic downtown. In six weeks, 16 girls have changed their minds. We only go on Saturday as that’s the heaviest day at the clinic, but hopefully we’ll be able to free up some more people to go more often.” -Debbie Strahan, Chicago, IL

Sidewalk counseling is talking with the girls as they are going in and out of the abortion clinics. This can be very effective, and we’ve heard many great reports about women changing their minds.

When you’re speaking with a girl, it’s important that you gain her trust. It’s best not to carry signs or wear buttons, etc., since this may scare her away. Don’t walk up and tell her you are “pro-life,” because that could mean to her that you’re only interested in her baby, and not her problem. The only way you’re going to save the child is through the mother. She probably feels frightened, confused, and backed into a corner, and the reason she’s come to the clinic in the first place is because of her problem. She needs to know you care about her, and are there to help her. (And you need to be sure you do love and care about her!) Many women aren’t really sure abortion is the right thing, but most of them don’t know the other options available.

So how do you start? Arm yourself with the love of Jesus and the holiness of the Holy Spirit, and walk up to the girl and start talking with her in a loving, non-condemning way. Ask her if she’s going to the clinic, if she’s just getting a pregnancy test, or is scheduled for an abortion. Remember that most clinics never inform girls about the baby’s development, and she probably thinks her baby is just “a wad of tissue.” You can show her some photos of what her baby looks like in the womb, and let her know the child inside her is just that – a child. Be friendly, and be yourself. Don’t fall into the trap of using a bunch of pat phrases or nice “Christian clichés.” Let her know you understand she’s in a tight spot, but having an abortion will only make things worse.

See if you can get her to put off going to the clinic… maybe ask her to go have a soda or something, so you can discuss her problems. What you need is love, concern, some knowledge of the facts, some good material with you and a “stick in there” attitude. Speak gently, ask questions, and show an interest in her as a whole person. If there’s a local problem pregnancy center in your area, suggestthat she call there, or take her there yourself.

If a girl does go into the clinic, that doesn’t mean it’s all over. Often she’ll go in and read the material, and think over what you’ve said. So when she comes out, ask her what happened, and if she made a decision. Be sure you get her phone number, and contact her the very next day.

See if there’s any sort of help she needs. Offer her specific assistance, because she might not know what to ask for, or might be too embarrassed to ask. You should have a loving home available where a girl, who may have other problems, could stay. Open your home or find someone else to open theirs.

Even if she does have the abortion, she needs to know you still care for her. Some sidewalk counselors will tell the girl that she’ll probably need counseling after her abortion, and ask if they could please be the ones to counsel her. Now more than ever she needs a friend, and she’s in desperate need of the Lord Jesus in her life. Welcome her to your local fellowship, and offer her a ride.

Talk To Your Doctor

See what kind of stand your physician takes on abortion – if he’s in favor of it, ask the Lord to give you the right words to minister truth. Women, ask your gynecologist if he does abortions or refers patients to abortion clinics. Many women quit patronizing those doctors who support abortion if, after talking to them, they’re unwilling to change their views. If you do change doctors, be sure to tell him exactly why you’re doing so. However, don’t forget your attitude of love in this.

If your doctor is against abortion, encourage him to get involved – doctors can have a powerful influence on other physicians and the community in general. He may also be willing to donate some of his services to a pregnant girl, or help out at a pro-life center.

Reach Out To the Abortion Doctors

People are not our enemies. God loves the doctors who perform abortions just as much as He loves the tiny babies they kill. The Scriptures command us that if a man is caught in any trespass, we are to restore him in a spirit of gentleness. (Gal. 6:1) Pray about how you can minister to these men and women. They are hurting, too. Of the thousands of letters we’ve received and hundreds of articles we’ve read, we’ve only heard of one abortion doctor ever getting saved. Now, maybe there have been others, but we haven’t heard of any. Perhaps you can meet with them, take them out to lunch, show them that you care.

Ask God for creative ways to reach out. Pray that the Holy Spirit will continue to work on their hearts and consciences. Remember – murder is not “the unpardonable sin.” Although the doctors, nurses, and clinic staff do bear an incredible weight of responsibility, their involvement with abortions isn’t what will send them to hell – it’s whether or not they yield their hearts to the love of Jesus. Let God use you to show them that love.

Picketing

Picketing is an area where the attitude of the heart is of utmost importance. It can be done in an effective way, or it can be something that is destructive to the cause of Christ. If you feel led in this area, seek the Lord as to exactly what He’d have you do. Remember, we do not fight against flesh and blood, and we cannot overcome the enemy in a spirit of bitterness, arrogance, or self-righteousness

Picketing serves two important purposes 1) It brings the whole issue of abortion to the attention of the public 2) It’s a definite deterrent to abortion doctors – economically, because it cuts down their business, and personally, because most doctors don’t want their other patients to know they perform abortions. We have heard of clinics that were shut down and doctors who stopped doing abortions because of picketing.

Count the cost before you begin. If you start out with brash statements of what you are going to accomplish, but within a week all your volunteers have given up, you may find that you have actually weakened the cause you were working for. (Luke 14:28-30)

You also need to be ready for the opposition you will most likely encounter. Picketing is bad for the abortion clinic’s business, and the owner will probably do all he can to have you stopped. However, as long as you picket legally, and avoid slander or libel, your rights to picket are protected by the First Amendment.

We suggest that you try to make a personal appointment to talk with the doctor before you begin to take action against his clinic. Share your heart with him or her in a loving, humble way. Let him know that you don’t hate him, and aren’t “out to get him.” Explain why you feel abortion is wrong, and why you are willing to take whatever action is necessary to see it stopped.
Basic Picketing Guidelines
  1. Don’t picket alone.
  2. Be sure you understand the laws of your city regarding trespassing and private vs. public property. Never trespass on clinic property, or picket in front of other people’s property. Stay on the sidewalk, and don’t step on the curb.
  3. Don’t block the driveway. Never attempt to physically stop someone from entering a clinic. Never block pedestrians on the sidewalk.
  4. Don’t lay picket signs on clinic property or nearby property. Don’t litter.
  5. Don’t engage in conversation with any heckler or counter-picketer. Under no circumstances touch or threaten to touch any heckler or counter-picketer.
  6. If the police should come by, please be courteous and follow their instructions to the letter.
  7. Be sure to carry some good literature to pass out.
  8. Be thoughtful about what you write on your signs. Think back to before you knew the Lord. How would you have felt if someone walked up and down in front of your house with a sign saying, “Susan is a fornicator” or “John is an adulterer”? It would have let your neighbors know what you were doing, but it probably only would have made you angry – we doubt it would have changed your heart. So before you put your signs together, seek God about what they should say.

If you should run into any legal problems, you can contact The Rutherford Institute, Box 510, Manassis, VA 22110, (703)396-0100. This is a group of attorneys committed to give free legal defense to picketers and others involved in abortion action.

Get Into the Schools

“I’m an eighth grade student, and in science class we read a pamphlet called `Children-Things We Throw Away?’ As we read about the five commonly used techniques I started to cry and didn’t stop until we left for another class. One boy laughed at me, and kept laughing all through the period. Every time I see a picture of an aborted baby I cry. To just think that the babies have no defense to fight against it.
“Tell me, what I can do to help because I can’t stand it any more. There should be a law against abortion and make the abortion clinics illegal. All my friends are behind me and we’ll do what we can.” -Rosemarie Trausch, Parma, OH

One of our staff members recently had an opportunity to talk about abortion in a local high school health class. To her amazement, there was almost no understanding among the students as to what an abortion really involved, what an unborn child was like, or how many abortions are performed each year. These young people are the potential abortion customers of tomorrow – and many of them are current customers today! Much of our efforts need to be directed towards educating them about the realities of abortion.

In order to be able to speak or bring a presentation to a class or a whole assembly, try to have a Christian teacher or student bring you onto campus. One ministry we know of has different students approach their health teachers and ask if they can bring someone in to talk about abortion. Many times you can get directly into class that way, avoiding a bunch of red tape. You will have a much better chance of getting into the schools through students or teachers than if you just come on your own from the outside.

Take along some good literature to pass out to the students and teachers, so that they have something to take home with them. Ask the kids questions, and get them involved in the discussion. Let them know the alternatives to abortion. Be sure to leave your name and address, or the name of your local problem pregnancy center.

Start A Problem Pregnancy Center – You Don’t Need To Be A Doctor!!

If you don’t know of a local problem pregnancy center, we encourage you to consider starting one! Believe it or not, it isn’t a difficult thing to organize. There are many young women who find themselves in a situation where they don’t know if they’re pregnant or not. Right now the majority of free pregnancy tests are offered at abortion clinics. This is because once the girls are in there, it’s not hard to convince them to pay for an abortion. The abortion clinics make it sound as if it’s just an easy thing – no more difficult than having a tooth pulled. But we know that many of these young women are scarred for life, both physically and emotionally, after having an abortion.

A Christian-based problem pregnancy center can offer free early pregnancy tests, and then have wonderful opportunities to talk with the girls. Tests can be purchased for about 60 cents or less each, and a center can be started in a couple of rooms in an office building or in a home where there is a private entrance. Advertising is done in local papers, phone books, etc., but without stating the “pro-life” thrust of the center. The girl who is coming for her free test can be reached with an alternative to abortion if she finds the test is positive.

“Living Alternatives” is one ministry that approaches this whole area from an entirely Christian perspective. They are working in several cities around the country, and their strategy includes problem pregnancy centers, homes for unwed mothers, and education programs for both the Christian and secular community. The strength of their work is that they seek to minister to each individual as a whole person, and their primary focus is on winning them with the loving kindness of Jesus. If you are interested in beginning a problem pregnancy center or an unwed mothers’ home, we highly recommend that you contact them. They are in the process of compiling an extensive manual on the “how to’s” of crisis centers. They also run training schools specifically for anyone wanting to get involved in this area. (On some occasions, they’ve even flown out to a city to help a group get started.) For more information you can write directly to them: Living Alternatives, Box 4600, Tyler, TX 75712, (903) 581-2891.

Voting – A Christian Responsibility

by Melody Green

“All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” -Edmond Burke

I’ve been a Christian for several years now, yet I still come across attitudes or ways of thinking that need a renewing touch from God. Voting was one of those areas. My thoughts on voting have always been apathetic at best, and becoming a Christian didn’t make them any better. In the not-so-distant past I’ve thought things like, “Well, I’ll just trust the Lord to put His people into office. What difference will only one vote make anyway?” I see now that thoughts like this are not only apathetic… they are dangerous.

Jesus told us we are to be the salt (preservative) of the earth. Have we become content to just sit in our comfortable little “shakers” instead of flowing freely to influence society around us? We need to be involved. Not only for the sake of the Lord, but for the sake of our nation as well. “The good influence of godly citizens causes a city to prosper.” (Proverbs 11:11)

Voting is a privilege that is taken very lightly by many people in this nation. If you think that the decisions in this country are being made by the majority of the people, you’re wrong. The decisions are made by the majority of the people who TAKE THE TIME TO VOTE!
I believe God wants all of us to take part in the continual shaping of this country. As citizens, our failure to vote cancels out our voice, and therefore, our choice. To give up our freedom to have a godly influence is a grave mistake. One day we may wake up to find that many freedoms we’ve taken for granted are gone… and that is not an irrational or unfounded statement.

The issues facing our nation today are the most crucial in history since slavery: abortion, homosexual rights, family and parental rights, pornography, and Christian educational freedom, to name a few. Watch the news, read the newspapers and magazines, and above all, pray. Find out all you can about the issues and how everyone involved feels about them. Ask God for wisdom. “Find some capable, godly, honest men who hate bribes, and… let these men be responsible to serve the people with justice at all times.” (Exodus 18:21-22)

Register And Vote!!

If you aren’t registered, do so. Encourage your Christian friends to register and challenge them to fulfill their voting responsibility. It’s possible in many areas to obtain mail-in voter registration cards. You can pass these out at church, school, or work. Then get out there and VOTE! Many people register with good intentions, but never make it to the polls. This nation was first declared to be “One nation under God.” Let’s do all that we can to see that it is. “For the wicked shall not rule the godly, lest the godly be forced to do wrong.(Psalm 125:3)

Dear Mr.

Tony Perkins: Gosnell Trial – FOX News

Per Tweet News, Kermit Gosnell Found Guilty

….. of murdering 3 live born Babies, and of involuntary manslaughter of one Mom, Karnamaya Mongar.

Fast payday loans For Every One

None of the media outlets can agree on how many charges Gosnell faced, with the numbers ranging from the 230′s to above 260, but the huge burden is the likely reason that the jury took so long in deliberating the many verdicts.

This hugely significant trial is most notable for having been ignored by the media, most of which only began covering the issue when forced to by its repetition in the social media.

The practices by Gosnell are not so notable, as many abortion clinics exhibit deplorable standards of practice and unsanitary conditions.  Also, the practice of infanticide is widespread at late term abortion clinics, in which babies who are born alive are killed by neglect, suffocation or other methods.

Open letter to President Obama (Part 637) Pro-life Atheist Nat Hentoff: “Without exception, Physicians emphasize that human life is a continuum–from the implantation of a fertilized egg in the uterine lining to birth to death”

Open letter to President Obama (Part 637)

(Emailed to White House on 6-12-13.)

___________________

Today in Arkansas: Cotton cheers Hobby Lobby ruling

Bill Kristol Quotes Tom Cotton on Fox News Sunday

Mark Pryor is not pro-life according to ARKANSAS RIGHT TO LIFE in 2014 and his conversation with David J. Sanders in 2002!!!!

Tolbert: Arkansas Right To Life Endorses Cotton

Arkansas Right to Life, along with the National Right to Life, rolled out an endorsement Monday for Congressman Tom Cotton pointing to both his consistent pro-life record as well as what they called “waffling and ducking” from his opponent – incumbent Sen. Mark Pryor on the life issue.

“As a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, Tom Cotton has been a strong advocate for the right-to-life cause,” said Carol Tobias, president of National Right to Life. “Tom Cotton is needed in the U.S. Senate to continue his strong advocacy on behalf of the most vulnerable members of our society.”

In their endorsement, the pro-life group pointed specifically to differences between the two candidates on the Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act – a bill which would prohibit late-term abortions after 20 weeks, the point at which the unborn baby can experience pain.  Cotton voted for the bill which has passed the House but has stalled in the Senate, where it has not had any support from Pryor.

“Mark Pryor has tried to have it both ways on the right-to-life issues, but nearly 12 years of waffling and ducking is enough,” said Jacki Ragan, Arkansas director to the National Right to Life Board of Directors.

I asked the Pryor campaign for comment on this legislation back in January but never heard back.  Others in the media have had similar results.

Pryor has a 35% pro-life rating based on votes on legislation tracked by the National Right to Life, while Cotton has a 100% rating.

The 20-week ban is similar to the ban passed by the Arkansas legislature back in 2013.  I will point out that this legislation was criticized by Mike Ross on the day he announced he was running for governor, however he voted for similar legislation while in Congress.

David J. Sanders: Pryor abortion stance hard to pin

David J. Sanders
Syndicated Columnist
Published Friday, June 14, 2002

Former Speaker of the House Tip O’Neill got in hot water with the leadership of the Catholic Church back in his home state of Massachusetts when he announced that his personal opposition to abortion wouldn’t hinder his support of the Constitution. (At the time of his announcement, the country was beginning to cope with the Roe v. Wade decision, which established that a woman’s right to an abortion was protected under the Constitution.)

Catholic leaders publicly chastised O’Neill. They were distraught that his proclaimed loyalty to what was at that time a new Supreme Court decision trumped any personal or religious convictions he had on the issue. The leaders asserted that O’Neill was worse than other supporters of abortion. They said his position was illogical in that he knew abortion was immoral and wouldn’t do anything about it.

Since entering the race for the U.S. Senate, Attorney General Mark Pryor has been somewhat elusive about his stand on abortion. Recently, questions about his position on abortion led Pryor’s pastor, Robert Lewis of Fellowship Bible Church of Little Rock, to prod his high-profile parishioner on the issue.

Lewis, a noted author and religious leader in the conservative Bible church movement, announced in Sunday’s church service that his “interview” with Pryor on abortion would be posted on the church’s Web site and encouraged members of his flock to check it out.

Having visited with Pryor about his stance on abortion — which isn’t different from the positions of Bill Clinton, Al Gore or Tip O’Neill — I decided to check his latest statements, wondering if he had changed his mind.

What I found was a transcript of a conversation between Pryor and his pastor. Pryor offered little new information.

Pryor acknowledged that out of political expedience, as recently as 1998, he had identified himself as “pro-choice.” He said that he felt all abortion was wrong except when the life of the mother is at stake. Pryor also claimed that he would consider any law to limit abortion.

Pryor asserted that he is opposed to so-called partial-birth abortions, but did not mention that as attorney general he failed to appeal a federal court decision’s striking down Arkansas partial-birth abortion law.

Lewis tried to nail Pryor down on abortion, asking him what he considered his political position. Pryor gave a canned answer, in which, like Bill Clinton, he said that he is personally opposed to abortion.

“I think women should have the right to decide in cases of rape, incest, and when the mother’s life is in danger. As a United States senator, I would balance my personal convictions with my sworn responsibility under the Constitution as I carefully consider each issue relating to abortion,” Pryor responded.

Last March, I asked Pryor the same question and received a similar answer. Not satisfied with his answer I probed further asking him if he would be in favor of a law that banned abortion except in cases of the aforementioned exceptions.

Pryor responded that he thought it would be unconstitutional. So I went further. I asked if he would be in favor of a constitutional amendment banning abortion except in the case of rape, incest or life of the mother. He responded, “No.”

He offered up a weak argument proclaiming a “general reluctance” to amend the Constitution on specific issues. Pryor said he believes the legal doctrine on abortion will change over time with our attitudes and values.

Lewis asked Pryor when he believes life begins. (Pro-lifers consider this to be the “mother of all questions.” Since they believe that life begins at conception, any action, like abortion, after conception is destroying a human life. This is a point many pro-choice crowds will rarely concede.) Surprisingly, Pryor stated a “common sense” approach that led him to believe that life begins at conception.

Pryor was even more illusive when his pastor asked him about Roe v. Wade. He correctly stated that striking down Roe wouldn’t end abortion, but would give states the right to regulate abortion laws. Even when given a clear opportunity to say so, Pryor wouldn’t advocate the end of Roe.

He seemed more concerned with states having different standards than with curtailing abortion. If Roe were ever struck down, abortions in Arkansas would be illegal except in cases where the life of the mother was in danger.

Unlike the Catholic clergy that castigated O’Neill nearly three decades ago, Pryor’s pastor put on kid gloves. Pryor continues to advocate positions that are illogical and disingenuous; Lewis should have called him on the carpet. If Pryor believes that life begins at conception, how can he be for maintaining the status quo?

Francis Schaeffer woke up many Christians concerning the abortion horrors that were taking place and at the same time Keith and Melody Green released a pamphlet on abortion and millions of people read it and it saved many lives. Below is that pamphlet which I read in 1978. Just last year I went online and read this testimony below concerning this very pamphlet:

The Questions Most People Ask About Abortion

Written and compiled by

Melody Green

In 1978 we first printed “Children – Things We Throw Away?” and since that time we have printed over nine million copies of it. It has been responsible for saving the lives of countless children (and we are ever so thankful to God for that!).We have been so encouraged by the response that we have decided to print the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about abortion, along with some “random notes” on the subject. We hope this speaks to your heart as much as it spoke to ours.

Q: Does the Bible give a stand on a woman who’s pregnant and gets, say, German measles, and the baby she carries in her womb is most likely to be deformed or retarded? What can we do then?

A: The Scriptures don’t change just because a child might be born with a handicap. What about the deformities that aren’t detected before birth shall we just kill these children on the delivery table? If we can abort the defective unborn, why not just kill the defective newborn? The baby will be just as dead if killed six months before the delivery or six minutes after. What’s the difference? What if a ten-year-old gets a disease that leaves him deformed or blind… shall we kill him too? It is no less savage to abort a deformed child than to exterminate a retarded adult. Where do we draw the line? If we decide to eliminate those who are imperfect, we need to ask ourselves two important questions:

  1. Just how perfect does one need to be before he is allowed to live?
  2. Who will have the power to make these decisions?

Does anyone have the right to play God?

“Who has made man’s mouth? Or who makes him dumb or deaf, or seeing or blind? Is it not I, the Lord?” (Exodus4:11)

“I received a German measles shot two weeks before I got pregnant with my first child. I called three doctors, and none of them would accept me as a patient. They all wanted me to get an abortion. I went to a fourth doctor, and she also advised me to have an abortion, that my chance of having a healthy baby was 0%. When I told her no, she said, ‘Well then you will have a deformed baby, and you’d better tell your husband.’ I was in tears by this time. My husband said, ‘God loves all people the same. Then I asked God to have mercy on us, and heal my child. I told Jesus that if He didn’t, that would be okay, because I knew He would be in control. I would love my baby no matter what. “I’m very happy to say that my baby girl, Angela, is perfectly healthy! While the doctor was stitching me up, she said I still should have had an abortion! Even my father-in-law thinks we should have aborted her! The day we came home from the hospital, my husband said, ‘I’m ready to turn my whole life over to God.’ Two miracles in one day!”

– Linda Serrano, Bakersfield, CA

Q:
There is one thing I’m confused about, and that’s rape. I have never been raped, but if I had been and became pregnant, I would die at the thought of carrying a cruel, thoughtless stranger’s baby. If you did become pregnant by rape, what would God want you to do?

A: First of all, rape practically never results in pregnancy, due to the trauma involved. But if it should occur, what is needed is loving support and assistance for the mother – not added guilt for her already burdened heart. It’s a strange sort of justice that would kill an innocent child for the crime of its father. Two wrongs never make a right. One violent act does not condone another.

If this were to happen to you, I know God would help you to forgive the baby’s father, and give you a real love for the baby (whether you kept it or gave it up for adoption). After all, that baby would be half yours, no matter who the father was. Think about this: If you found out tomorrow that you were the product of a rape – would you wish that your mother had aborted you?

“WELL, DOC… I JUST DON’T FEEL LIKE HAVING IT” According to the Supreme Court, a baby’s viability (the ability to live outside the mother’s womb) is a consideration unless the mother’s life or health is threatened. The Court defined her “life or health” to mean her physical, psychological, or emotional health, her age, her marital status, or the infant’s prospects of distressful life and/or future.

Q: You have unfairly dramatized the issue of abortion by playing up the horrors. Let’s not become idol worshipers of a wad of cells that adhere to the wall of a uterus. Until those cells free themselves and become an independently functioning unit, they are hardly any different than any other tissue in the woman. Do we mourn over the loss of an appendix? A woman wanting an abortion has made a difficult decision. Let’s not become judgmental and deny her what she wants. Such a woman needs all the Christian love we can manifest.

A: How can you compare an unborn child to a mere appendix?? An appendix does not turn into a baby, it has no eternal soul… and it does not have the gift of life so generously bestowed by God. A baby is a different person with his or her own distinct set of chromosomes – different than any part of the mother. The child has its own blood supply that may even be a different type than the mother, and the child can be of the opposite sex. He or she is obviously a separate individual.

I am totally in favor of giving “all the Christian love we can manifest.” The question is, what is Christian love? One of the problems facing Christians today is that we are afraid of people thinking we are “judging them” that we are reluctant to get involved in their lives. Instead, we just stand by and let our brothers and sisters fall into a pit without opening our mouth to stop them. We can’t continue to hide behind Cain’s sarcastic question, “Am I my brother’s keeper?” (Gen.4:9) Of course we are! Jesus taught that anyone in distress is our neighbor and we must come to his aid. (Luke 10:30-37) Let’s do all we can to help the mother without exterminating her baby. Complacency and failure to watch over each other spiritually is definitely the path of least resistance… but please, let’s not call it love… least of all, Christian love!

“Deliver those who are being taken away to death,
And those who are staggering to slaughter, O hold them back.
If you say, ‘See, we did not know this,’
Does He not consider it who weighs the hearts?
And does He not know it who keeps your soul?
And will He not render to man according to his work?”

(Proverbs 24:11-12)

Q: Don’t unwanted children usually end up being battered and abused children later on in life?

A: This is a totally false notion. Dr. Edward Lenoski, Professor of Pediatrics at U.S.C., showed in a recent study of 674 battered children that 91% were planned pregnancies and 90% were legitimate. Also, statistics show conclusively that since the legalization of abortion, child abuse has risen very sharply, along with illegitimate births, welfare, and an overall national increase in immorality that is reaching epidemic proportions. Abortions in the U.S. alone have killed 30 million children since 1973. The plain fact is, abortion is the ultimate in child abuse.

Q: Isn’t legally preventing a woman from having an abortion an invasion of her privacy?

A: Our laws are very funny. They allow police to enter the privacy of people’s homes to stop them from battering and abusing their children. Then they use the same force of law to guarantee the “privacy and right” of parents to dismember or poison their babies before birth. In fact, I think almost all crime is done in private (i.e., murder, theft, rape, kidnapping, etc.). Does this mean that if we know it’s going on, we turn our heads and look the other way, so as not to invade anyone’s right to privacy? Of course not! Abortion is murder and it cannot be tolerated any easier when committed behind closed doors than if it were performed on a street comer!

Q: Awhile back, one of my friends became pregnant. She asked me to drive her to the doctor’s office to get an abortion. Since I was the only person she trusted, I did all I could do to help. I now feel that I have become an accomplice to murder since I actively supported her in her decision. Am I as guilty as if I had an abortion myself?

A: I’m sure there are many mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, and boyfriends who have either encouraged someone to get an abortion, or actually helped them to obtain one, as you did. You need to realize that since you assisted in that abortion, you are a partaker in that sin. By your actions you were saying, “Yes, I agree with what you are doing.” Since you now see the wickedness of this, you need to immediately go to the Lord, and with your whole heart ask Him to forgive you. He will be quick to do so as long as you are completely sincere. I also think it would be best for you to go back to your friend and ask her forgiveness for your help in leading her astray. Even though she may still think you did her a great favor, you might have a chance to share with her what God has shown you, and how she, too, needs to repent and get right with Him.

Human Experimentation.

Before it became publicly known, private abortion clinics in England sold live aborted babies for research. Dr. Lawn was quoted as saying, “We are only using something destined for the incinerator to benefit mankind…” Mr. Phillip Stanley, a spokesman for the clinic selling fetuses, said that they were “aged between 18 and 22 weeks” – that’s 41/2 to 51/2 months! Mr. Stanley continued, “A fetus has to be 28 weeks to be legally viable. Earlier than that it is so much garbage.”
No distinction is made in the Scriptures between babes in the womb and those already born. The word brephos, used to describe the baby in Elizabeth’s womb, is used interchangeably for both prenatal (Luke 1:41,44) and postnatal babies (Luke18:15-17). It means “an unborn child, embryo, fetus; a newborn child, an infant, brephos, a babe.”(Thayers Greek English Lexicon, p.105)

Q: Isn’t birth control just another form of abortion?

A. It depends on what you use. Some methods do cause abortions and should be avoided, such as the inter-uterine device (IUD) and most birth control pills.

When birth control pills were originally developed, they contained such high levels of estrogen that there was almost no chance of a woman releasing an egg for fertilization – starting a new life. However, most of today’s lower-estrogen-level pills are not as effective in preventing the release of an egg – so these pills also prevent pregnancies by affecting the lining of the womb in such a way that a fertilized egg has a difficult time attaching and growing. A new life trying to grow finds no place to take root. We encourage you and your spouse to draw your own conclusions what the Lord would have you do. True contraception will prevent new life from beginning, not abort that life once it has already begun.

Q: Since Adam was not alive until God breathed into him the breath of life, and since the baby does not breathe until he leaves the womb, isn’t it true that the unborn baby has no soul and therefore can be aborted without guilt?

A: There is no parallel here. Adam had no life until God breathed into him, but from the moment of conception the babe is alive and growing. James says that the body apart from the spirit is dead. (James 2:26) If the baby in the womb is not alive, there would be no one there to kill! A live baby not only has a soul – but an eternal spirit as well.

“Protection of the life of the mother as an excuse for an abortion is a smoke screen. In my 36 years of pediatric surgery, I have never known of one instance where the child had to be aborted to save the mother’s life. If toward the end of the pregnancy complications arise that threaten the mother’s health, the doctor will either induce labor or perform a Caesarean section. His intention is to save the life of both the mother andthe baby. The baby’s life is never willfully destroyed because the mother’s life is in danger.”- C. Everett Koop, MD, U.S. Surgeon General

Q: Isn’t the age of viability (the ability for the baby to live outside the mother’s womb) one of the deciding factors in whether or not someone should have an abortion? It seems to me that that would be a pretty fair way to decide.

A: According to the courts, viability is a consideration, but in actual practice it doesn’t really seem to matter. There have been many babies prematurely born as early as the fourth month of pregnancy, weighing only one or two pounds, who have survived and grown into normal children because they were given intensive medical care. On the other hand, abortions are being performed on perfectly healthy babies much older than that (even up to the ninth month in some cases!) – and if they do happen to be born alive, they are usually left unattended to suffer and die. In the face of this, the whole viability question just doesn’t seem to make much sense.

Dr. Magda Denes says, “Abortion based on viability is as logical as maintaining that drowning a non-swimmer in a bathtub is permitted because he would have drowned anyway if he would have fallen into the sea.” You also have to think about the many people on life-support systems, iron lungs, kidney dialysis machines, etc. Should we just pull the plug on anyone who cannot survive totally on his own?

Q: Is it fair to bring an “unwanted baby” into the world?

A: It’s too late to ask that question after a baby has been conceived. Whether you may personally think it’s fair or not doesn’t change the fact that the pre-born child has already been brought into this world and no one has the right to destroy his or her life. All people, born and unborn, have the same value in the eyes of God. God created each of us in His own image, and He knows each one of us by name – even when yet in the womb. “For Thou didst form my inward parts; Thou didst weave me in my mother’s womb…My frame was not hidden from Thee, when I was made in secret…Thine eyes have seen my unformed substance; and in Thy book they were all written, the days that were ordained for me, when as yet there was not one of them.” (Psalm 139:13-16)

Actually, the “unwanted baby” is a myth. There is no such thing. Due to shortages of newborn babies for adoption, there are thousands of couples who long night and day to hold and love the children so many mothers are throwing away. Those who say they are getting an abortion for the sake of their “unwanted child” are obviously not thinking of the child’s happiness and well-being… but of their own.

Need Help?

Nearly every major city has at least one helpline that provides positive assistance to anyone involved in a problem pregnancy. Phone “Information” and ask the operator for the nearest Crisis Pregnancy Center, Women Exploited By Abortion (WEBA), Bethany Christian Services, Save Our Babies (Southern U.S.),Crusade For Life (California), National Right to Life, or Birthright headquarters. They will be happy to assist you.

You can also contact us here at Last Days Ministries. You don’t have to go through your pregnancy alone and afraid. We know that God loves you and your baby equally, and so we will do our best to help both of you in whatever way we can. Call or write if you need help…or if you just want to talk to somebody who cares.

Q: If your parents and/or your pastor counsel you to get an abortion, what should you do?

A: I know of one girl who was really glad her parents were “making her get an abortion,” so that she didn’t have to take the responsibility for the decision herself. However, God knows our hearts, and only through self deception do we think we can hide behind others and pretend “it was all their idea.”

Even if you are a minor living in your parents’ home, there is nothing that can be done legally or spiritually to make you get an abortion against your will. Yes, we are to honor our parents and respect our spiritual authorities, but not if they are asking us to do something illegal, immoral, or unscriptural… that is where the line is drawn. Unfortunately, abortion is not illegal, but it is definitely immoral and unscriptural. We must honor God above all others – and we simply cannot break His commandments to please anyone, no matter who they are. This is not rebellion – but true submission to God’s authority in the face of possible persecution.

Unfortunately, many parents (even “Christian” ones) are uninformed or selfishly motivated, just as many pastors and counselors are giving tragic advice to those who are truly seeking a scriptural answer.

“It would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea, than that he should cause one of these little ones to stumble.” (Luke 17:2)
Two tiny infants, a boy and a girl, weighing approximately three pounds each, survived saline abortions at a Wilmington, Delaware hospital. The unwanted babies have both been signed over for adoption by their mothers, and have been referred to by the hospital staff there as Sal and Salina – a reference to the saline solution that failed to kill them.- “Voice For The Unborn” 8/79

Q: Isn’t it true that before 1973 when abortion was made legal, that 5,000 – 10,000 women a year died from “back alley” abortions?

A: Dr. Bernard said that this figure is totally false, and he should know, since he was one of the several pro-abortionists who circulated this figure before the 1973 Supreme Court hearings. He now says the figure was closer to 500, and in 1972 (the year before abortion was made legal) only 39 deaths were recorded. He explains he circulated these false figures in order to bring about legal abortion. However, after presiding over 75,000 deaths as the head of the world’s largest abortion clinic, Dr. Nathanson came to believe that those infants in the womb were little people, and that he was murdering them. He has written the best seller, Aborting America, and even while involved in abortions, he could not understand how Christian clergymen could promote them when Christianity insists on protection for the weak.

“Until birth, the fetus is invisible… if the abdominal wall of the pregnant woman were transparent, what kind of abortion laws might we have?” Dr. Bernard Nathanson

Q: If we make abortions illegal, they will still go on. The poor will suffer, and the rich will get them anyway – so what’s the point? At least if they are legal everyone will get good clean medical care.

A: I agree. They will still go on – but not in such high numbers. As for the rich, they have always been better able to afford their vices. It would be just as wise to buy abortions for the poor as it would be to buy them heroin. Yes, abortions will go on. Rape also goes on in spite of our laws – should it no longer be a crime? Or should we spend tax money to buy the rapist a good clean hotel room to commit his crime in…after all, “He’s going to rape people anyway!”

“I’m a housewife and a registered nurse from Jacksonville. I worked the 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. shift, and when we weren’t busy, I’d go out to help with the newborns. One night I saw a bassinet outside the nursery. There was a baby in this bassinet – a crying, perfectly formed baby – but there was a difference in this child. She had been scalded. She was the child of a saline abortion. “This little girl looked as if she had been put in a pot of boiling water. No doctor, no nurse, no parent, to comfort this hurt, burned child. She was left alone to die in pain. They wouldn’t let her in the nursery – they didn’t even bother to cover her.

“I was ashamed of my profession that night! It’s hard to believe this can happen in our modern hospitals, but it does. It happens all the time. I thought a hospital was a place to heal the sick – not a place to kill.

“I asked a nurse at another hospital what they do with their babies that are aborted by saline. Unlike my hospital, where the baby was left alone struggling for breath, their hospital puts the infant in a bucket and puts the lid on. Suffocation! Death by suffocation!

“Another nurse said she had to stop helping with abortions. The little severed arms and legs from suction abortions were just too much for her to look at.

“Aren’t you happy our moms weren’t born in this generation? It could have been one of us in that lonely bassinet – or that ugly bucket.” –Kathleen Malloy, Jacksonville, FL

Some Closing Comments

Abortion is not an issue that you can remain “neutral” on. You are either for it or against it. What would you do if you were walking down the street, and looking up, you saw a woman about to throw her three-month-old baby out the window? Would you turn and walk away saying, “Well, I wouldn’t do that, but I won’t interfere. It’s her decision – that baby’s probably messing up her life anyway.”

Our laws give us absolute “rights and wrongs” (i.e., don’t speed, don’t shoplift, pay your taxes, etc.), and if our laws don’t, God certainly does. If you can’t tell someone “Don’t!” you might as well load them in a car and drive them to the abortion clinic yourself!

Many girls, through selfishness, have fallen into deep deception concerning God’s will. They say, “I have been praying about it, and I really feel God wants me to get an abortion,” or “I know it’s wrong, but my pastor said God will forgive me afterwards.” I have heard too many girls tell me they were counseled to get an abortion at their church. I am wondering just how these pastors and counselors are going to withstand the judgment of God for leading these sheep astray. (Luke 17:2)

The American Holocaust

The “final solution” to the Jewish problem of the Third Reich rested on the belief that it was not enough to simply be human to have the right to live. One had to have certain other qualities, and unfortunately, the Jews and Gypsies lacked them. Aren’t we doing the same things with our babies?

Each day in America over 4,400 babies are being put to death without benefit of due process – trial or defense. They are executed by techniques more cruel and inhumane than any horror movie has ever portrayed. This year, over two million will die in the U.S. alone, and it is estimated that up to 60 million abortions will be performed this year worldwide. In the face of this, Pharoah’s extermination of the Hebrew boys or the slaughter by Herod of the babes in Bethlehem pales in comparison.

Each day in America alone, over 4,400 babies are being put to death by abortion. That’s1 every 20 seconds (approx.) – 24 hours a day -365 days a year!

What You Can Do

We must take a stand… and not a silent one. I’m not saying we should all put on sandwich boards and picket our local abortion clinic… although it doesn’t sound like a bad idea. But we should take every opportunity to speak out and let our views be known. We should do everything we can to prevent someone from making a mistake they will always regret. We must offer all the help and support we can if we expect the unsure mother to carry her child to full term. Open your home to her, help pay her doctor bills… be her friend.

Too many times when an unwed mother does make the right choice, she is shunned and made to feel “dirty” by the Church. In an attempt to discourage promiscuity by penalizing the unwed mother, we have actually encouraged her to take the so-called “easy way out.” Rather than endure the social stigma and persecution by those who claim to love Jesus, she heads for the friendly abortion clinic. How do you think Jesus would treat these, who, although they had made a serious mistake, were now willing to bear the shame, whispering, and humiliation to do the right thing? Can we do any less than He would?

I pray you take this to heart and and prayer and see what the Lord might have you do. Please, try to imagine God’s grief. He sees it all, you know. I wonder if He didn’t think a mother’s womb was the safest, most loving place in the world for a little baby to be nurtured and protected. Let’s do all we can to keep it that way! – Melody

Although President Obama had no trouble commenting on the ongoing Trayvon Martin case, White House spokesperson Jay Carney said [last month] Obama wouldn’t be commenting on the Kermit Gosnell mass murder case because he “cannot take a position on an ongoing trial” or “comment further on an ongoing legal proceeding.”

Of course the White House wants to avoid this topic. What a disaster Gosnell is for Obama.

Gosnell first brings to Obama’s door the uncomfortable topic of infanticide. Obama is well known to have votedfour times against the Illinois Born Alive Infants Protection Act as state senator, which sought to protect abortion survivors.

But Obama also opposed two companion bills to BAIPA, one of which brings him zero degrees of separation from Gosnell. I was impressed with Fox’s Ed Henry, who went there in his questions to Carney [last month].

On April 4, 2002, Obama testified against Senate Bill 1663, which required abortionists to provide “reasonable measures consistent with good medical practice” to abortion survivors and to plan to have a second physician present if there was a “reasonable likelihood” that the abortion would result “in a live born child.”

You can read the entire transcript here, but the gist of Obama’s opposition was that he had full faith in abortionists:

The only plausible rationale, to my mind, of this legislation would be if you had a suspicion that a doctor . . . (a) is going to make the wrong assessment, and (b) if the physician discovered, after the labor had been induced, that, in fact, he made an error . . . and . . . would not try to exercise the sort of medical measures and practices that would be involved in saving that child.

Now, if you think that there are possibilities that doctors would not do that, then maybe this bill make sense, but I . . . feel . . . an additional doctor who then has to be called in an emergency situation to come in and make these assessments is really designed to burden the original decision of the woman and the physician.

[I]f these are children who are being born alive, I, at least, have confidence that a doctor who is in that room is going to make sure that they’re looked after.

Obama could not fathom that an abortionist who had been paid to kill a baby wouldn’t turn around and try to save a viable baby’s life in the event of a botch.

Kermit Gosnell would have been one of the abortionists in which Obama had “confidence.” Most know by now Gosnell is on trial for murdering seven abortion survivors and one mother.

Gosnell was committing abortions in Pennsylvania at the very time this bill was being debated in Illinois. Who knows, perhaps Gosnell was “snipping” the spinal cord of an abortion survivor at the moment Obama testified to his sterling character. After all, the grand jury report stated Gosnell likely killed “hundreds” of abortion survivors during the three decades he was in business.

Barack Obama has stated on record that he stands with the Kermit Gosnells of America. He can’t walk that back without opening the door to regulations such as he rejected as state senator. So he’s stuck.

Jill Stanek’s commitment to Christ led her to risk her job, reputation, and friendships to stop the terrible practices of abortion and infanticide. Jill was a registered nurse at Christ Hospital in Illinois when she made the shocking discovery that babies were being aborted alive and allowed to die without medical care. Jill went public and has since become a national figure in the effort to protect both born and preborn infants. In January 2003, Jill was named by World Magazine as one of the 30 most prominent pro-life leaders in the movement over the past 30 years.
