Figuring out Lorde’s Christian Roots Part 8 (UPDATED)

Figuring out Lorde’s Christian Roots Part 8

UPDATED (David Bruce commented “She didn’t say she was a big Jesus believer. She said she was a big Yeezus believer. Which is a Kanye West album. Which incidentally is a blasphemous, hateful piece of garbage from what I’ve heard of it.” This sets me straight concerning what Lorde said in the video that I saw. She did not say that she was a “big Jesus believer.” )

Ella Yelich-O’Connor (born 7 November 1996), known by her stage name Lorde (/ˈlɔrd/),[1] is a New Zealand singer-songwriter. She released her first EP, The Love Club EP, in March 2013 and her second single, “Tennis Court“, in June 2013. The artist’s debut album, Pure Heroine, is scheduled for a September 2013 release.[2]

Early life

“I started writing songs when I was 13 or 14, because I’ve always been a huge reader. My mum’s a poet and we’ve always had so many books, and that’s always been a big thing for me, arguably more so than music.”

 — Yelich-O’Connor, speaking of her songwriting technique.[3]

Yelich-O’Connor was born in Auckland, New Zealand on 7 November 1996 to a civil engineer father and a stay-at-home mother/poet; she was then raised in suburban Devonport, North Shore, Auckland.[4][5][6] She is of Yugoslav ancestry.[7]

At the age of 12, she was spotted by A&R scout Scott Maclachlan when he saw her singing in a video of a talent show at her school, Belmont Intermediate.[8] Later, when Yelich-O’Connor was 13, Maclachlan signed her to Universal and, at the age of 14, she began working with their songwriters.[9] Yelich-O’Connor began writing songs with her guitar at “about thirteen or fourteen”.[10][better source needed]

As of July 2013, Yelich-O’Connor is a Year Twelve student at Takapuna Grammar School.[11][12]

Career

2013: The Love Club EP and Pure Heroine

Officially released digitally in March 2013, and on CD in May 2013. The Love Club EP featured five songs including the number one hit “Royals“. On 27 May 2013, “Royals” was covered on national television on the New Zealand version of The X Factor by all-girl group Gap 5, mentored by Melanie Blatt. “Royals” debuted at number 1 on the New Zealand Top 40 on 15 March 2013 and remained in the top position for three weeks.[13] On 8 May 2013, The Love Club EP debuted in the number 2 position on the album chart. In August 2013, Lorde became the first woman to top the Billboard Alternative Songs chart in the United States since Tracy Bonham in 1996.[5] Following the release of “Royals” in the United States in June 2013, 85,000 copies were sold during a single week in July. In a subsequent interview, Lorde stated, “I had a sneaking suspicion that it might do all right”.[14]

The “Tennis Court” single was released in New Zealand on 8 June 2013.[15] The Tennis Court EP was released digitally in the UK on 7 June (due to the timezone difference) and physically on 22 June.[16][17] It was played during the BBC coverage of the 2013 Wimbledon Championships Ladies Final. On 14 June 2013, Yelich-O’Connor’s second single “Tennis Court” debuted at number 1 on the New Zealand Top 40 singles chart. In the same week, she also became the first New Zealand artist to simultaneously have four songs in the top 20 tracks of the New Zealand Top 40. Previously, Titanium held this record with three songs.[18]

Yelich-O’Connor was the replacement for Frank Ocean, who cancelled due to illness, at the 2013 Splendour in the Grass Festival. She was contacted on 26 July 2013, the Friday immediately prior to the weekend of the festival, while she was in attendance at a party with friends in Auckland, New Zealand. As Lorde, Yelich-O’Connor performed before 10,000 people in northern Byron Bay, Australia, where the festival is based as of 2013.[14]

On 12 August 2013, Yelich-O’Connor announced on her Twitter profile that her debut album Pure Heroine would be released on 30 September 2013.[2]

In September 2013, Yelich-O’Connor and cowriter Joel Little were shortlisted for the 2013 Silver Scroll Award for “Royals”—the award honours outstanding achievements in the writing of original New Zealand pop music songs.[19]

In a recent episode of 3rd Degree from TV3, Yelich-O’Connor revealed that she decided to turn down an offer from singer Katy Perry as a supporting act on her world tour.[20]

Musical style and influences

Yelich-O’Connor’s music draws from electropop and has been praised for “remarkably razor sharp” lyrics. Yelich-O’Connor cites soul singer Etta James and producer SBTRKT as two of prominent influences.[21] Yelich-O’Connor has also stated that she was inspired by the initially hidden identities of Burial and The Weeknd, saying, “I feel like mystery is more interesting”.[6]

Yelich-O’Connor is a fan of American musical artist Nicki Minaj, calling her an “important female in pop.”[22] During the writing of The Love Club (2013), Yelich-O’Connor was particularly influenced by rap artist Kanye West and singer Lana Del Rey, and she performed a live cover of West’s song “Hold My Liquor” at her Auckland concert 7th September 2013.[23][24][25]

Notes

A ^ In Australia, The Love Club EP appeared on the Australian Singles Chart. Sales of songs on the EP, including “Royals” and “The Love Club”, went toward the sales tallies of The Love Club EP and therefore could not chart separately.

“Music Monday” Coldplay the documentary with pictures and videos (Part 6 )

Coldplay Max Masters – Part 7 of 7

Chris Martin revealed in his interview with Howard Stern that he was rasied an evangelical Christian but he has left the church. I believe that many words that he puts in his songs today are generated from the deep seated Christian beliefs from his childhood that find their way out in his life. His belief in being generous with charities, and the fact Coldplay’s songs  deal so much with death and the search for meaning and purpose of life (similar to Solomon’s search in Ecclesiastes), that our actions are being watched, and Chris describes different ways God tries to reveal himself to us, and many songs deal with trying to find a way to an afterlife and heaven, and he stills uses Christian terms like being “blessed” and “grateful.”

Up to this point many people may be saying that this is all based on some pretty flimsy evidence. However, one of the most revealing things came out when Chris wrote the song “Viva La Vida.” He had previously said he left Christianity because of the biblical view of eternal damnation but what does Chris do with the evil king in the song “Viva La Vida?”  Q Magazine asked Chris Martin about the lyric in this song “I know Saint Peter won’t call my name.” Martin said,  “It’s about…You’re not on the list… Its always fascinated me that idea of finishing your life and then being analyzed on it…That is the most frightening thing you could possibly say to somebody. Eternal damnation.  I know it. It’s mildly terrifying to me. And this is serious.”

Maybe we have heard the last of this journey from Chris?

Coldplay – Viva La Vida

I am glad that Chris believes in being generous with charities with his own personal funds, but he also supported President Obama who wanted to increase the welfare state. Take a look at these articles below.

The Moral Basis for Economic Liberty

By
July 13, 2010

The modern welfare state is simply incapable of making the kinds of distinctions that Saint Paul insists are necessary in administering charity. The centralized state, by its nature, administers programs on the assumption that people are identical and can be shaped according to an inflexible central plan. Private charity may not be able to do all the work that is necessary, but where and when it is allowed to work, it does a better job than the public sector. It is also based on the principle of voluntary action as opposed to state coercion, which gives it a morally superior status.

Seeking the Welfare of the City

By
May 1, 2012

Conservatives are often portrayed as selfish scrooges who only care about their own bottom lines. But when it comes to truly meeting people’s needs, they’re the leaders of the pack.

Star Parker knew poverty personally. As a young drug addict in southern California, she lacked money, employment and hope. At one point, she was arrested for helping to rob a liquor store, and over the span of a few years, she had four abortions—all paid for by the government. Parker survived on welfare checks and free medical-care stickers, which she would sell to purchase illegal drugs.

The scriptural call to care for people such as Parker is clear: Loving our neighbor entails helping those in dire straits and working for the common good of their community.

In the biblical sense, seeking welfare has to do with promoting circumstances that allow people to flourish. It means helping people thrive in their homes, workplaces, neighborhoods, economies and political communities. This goal characterizes a true conservative political framework.

Now the president of a social policy research center focused on poverty issues, Parker testifies that a biblical view of human flourishing is at home in a conservative agenda—one focused on basic human dignity, strong families, a vibrant civil society, prosperous free markets and limited government.

Who Cares?

Many conservatives—and especially those motivated by faith—are on the front lines of caring for the poor. They’re the “street saints” who work quietly but tirelessly in the trenches, providing critical services in education, health, drug rehabilitation, prisoner re-entry, job training and disaster relief.

In fact, research shows conservatives actually give more to the poor than liberals. Syracuse University professor Arthur Brooks compiled this body of research in his 2006 book Who Really Cares: The Surprising Truth about Compassionate Conservatism. Brooks found that conservative-headed households tend to give about 30 percent more money to charity than liberal-headed households, even though liberal families earn an average of 6 percent more each year than conservative families. Conservatives also tend to volunteer more time and give more blood than do liberals.

Despite such data, conventional wisdom portrays liberals as being the ones intent on fighting poverty and conservatives as selfish scrooges. Sadly, the promotion of free markets and limited government is often mistakenly equated with a disregard for people in need. Meanwhile, support for government redistribution programs functions as a kind of litmus test for genuine care and compassion. (Never mind the paradoxical fact that, according to Brooks, Americans who favor income-redistribution policies are significantly less likely to behave charitably than those who do not.)

True compassion, though, isn’t measured by how much money the federal government spends. The real question is which approach actually helps people escape poverty and flourish over the long-run. Conservatives tend to answer that question differently than liberals, although they both share the goal of “seeking the welfare of the city.”

 Replacing Welfare with Private Charity

Private efforts have been much more successful than the federal government’s failed attempt at charity. America is the most generous nation on earth. Americans already contribute more than $125 billion annually to charity. In fact, more than 85 percent of all adult Americans make some charitable contribution each year. In addition, about half of all American adults perform volunteer work; more than 20 billion hours were worked in 1991. The dollar value of that volunteer work was more than $176 billion. Volunteer work and cash donations combined bring American charitable contributions to more than $300 billion per year, not counting the countless dollars and time given informally to family members, neighbors, and others outside the formal charity system.

Private charities have been more successful than government welfare for several reasons. First, private charities are able to individualize their approach to the circumstances of poor people in ways that governments can never do. Government regulations must be designed to treat all similarly situated recipients alike. Glenn C. Loury of Boston University explains the difference between welfare and private charities on that point. “Because citizens have due process rights which cannot be fully abrogated . . . public judgments must be made in a manner that can be defended after the fact, sometimes even in court.” The result is that most government programs rely on the simple provision of cash or other goods and services without any attempt to differentiate between the needs of recipients.

Take, for example, the case of a poor person who has a job offer. But she can’t get to the job because her car battery is dead. A government welfare program can do nothing but tell her to wait two weeks until her welfare check arrives. Of course, by that time the job will be gone. A private charity can simply go out and buy a car battery (or even jump-start the dead battery).

The sheer size of government programs works against individualization. As one welfare case worker lamented, “With 125 cases it’s hard to remember that they’re all human beings. Sometimes they’re just a number.” Bureaucracy is a major factor in government welfare programs. For example, a report on welfare in Illinois found procedures requiring “nine forms to process an address change, at least six forms to add or delete a member of a household, and a minimum of six forms to report a change in earnings or employment.” All that for just one program.

In her excellent book Tyranny of Kindness, Theresa Funiciello, a former welfare mother, describes the dehumanizing world of the government welfare system–a system in which regulations and bureaucracy rule all else. It is a system in which illiterate homeless people with mental illnesses are handed 17-page forms to fill out, women nine months pregnant are told to verify their pregnancies, a woman who was raped is told she is ineligible for benefits because she can’t list the baby’s father on the required form. It is a world totally unable to adjust to the slightest deviation from the bureaucratic norm.

In addition to being better able to target individual needs, private charities are much better able to target assistance to those who really need help. Because eligibility requirements for government welfare programs are arbitrary and cannot be changed to fit individual circumstances, many people in genuine need do not receive assistance, while benefits often go to people who do not really need them. More than 40 percent of all families living below the poverty level receive no government assistance. Yet more than half of the families receiving means-tested benefits are not poor. Thus, a student may receive food stamps, while a homeless man with no mailing address goes without. Private charities are not bound by such bureaucratic restrictions.

Private charity also has a better record of actually delivering aid to recipients. Surprisingly little of the money being spent on federal and state social welfare programs actually reaches recipients. In 1965, 70 cents of every dollar spent by the government to fight poverty went directly to poor people. Today, 70 cents of every dollar goes, not to poor people, but to government bureaucrats and others who serve the poor. Few private charities have the bureaucratic overhead and inefficiency of government programs.

DON’T BE SURPRISED IF EITHER THE HOGS OR VOLS KNOCK OFF THE TIDE THIS YEAR!!!!

__________

Will Alabama drop a game before LSU game? This week they take on Kentucky and most believe the Wildcats are already turning their sites to the basketball court by this time this year. However, Arkansas and Tennessee have proven that they make the big boys like Texas A & M and Georgia sweat. Two weeks ago I attended the Hog-Aggie game in Fayetteville and there were plenty of opportunities for the Razorbacks to get a win but two more turnovers than the Aggies  proven to be the difference in the 12 point win for the Aggies. This week Tennessee looked like they were going to pull out the win over the Bulldogs but in the last few seconds Georgia managed a long drive to tie up the game and put it into overtime with only 5 seconds left in the game when they got the tying touchdown. DON’T BE SURPRISED IF EITHER THE HOGS OR VOLS KNOCK OFF THE TIDE THIS YEAR!!!!

Analysis: What Georgia’s escape from Tennessee tells us

No. 6 Georgia’s 34-31 win at unranked Tennessee needed overtime, assistance from the replay crew and another showcase of late-game heroics from quarterback Aaron Murray, giving the senior another highlight to add to his Heisman Trophy résumé.

On a bigger scale, perhaps, the game was proof one of one of three themes, depending on your team and conference allegiance:

BOX SCORE: Bulldogs 34, Volunteers 31 (OT)

HIGHLIGHTS: How the top 25 fared in Week 6

It was illustrative of the Volunteers’ in-season growth under new coach Butch Jones, who is now 3-3 at the midway point of his first season. Tennessee has clearly progressed, using its increased experience and comfort level in Jones’ system to go from last Saturday, when it needed a late interception to survive South Alabama, to an overtime loss against the second-best team in the SEC, according to the national polls.

It was a byproduct of Georgia’s ever-growing list of injured offensive skill players. The Bulldogs lost wide receiver Malcolm Mitchell in late August and star running back Todd Gurley to an ankle injury during last week’s win against LSU; the disabled list added three names Saturday: running back Keith Marshall and receivers Michael Bennett and Justin Scott-Wesley.

It was further evidence that Oregon is the best team in college football. Tennessee tripped to Oregon on Sept. 14, mere weeks ago – and lost 59-14. This was no ordinary loss; this was an historic loss, with the 45-point margin of defeat UT’s largest since a 48-0 loss to Mississippi State in 1910.

Option four: All of the above.

There’s no doubt UT has made strides under Jones and his staff, even if the Volunteers sit at .500 in advance of games against South Carolina and Alabama. There was one-week growth from the win against South Alabama to the loss to Georgia, and clear and substantial improvement during the three weeks following the loss to Oregon.

It’s also clear that Georgia has depth-chart woes. At least the defense remains upright, to a degree: The Bulldogs are young on defense, but they’re largely healthy. The offense, already without Mitchell for the year and Gurley for at least another game, will need help from the second tier of the two-deep to survive at wide receiver without Bennett and Scott-Wesley.

The running game continues to flourish even without Gurley and Marshall, with the latter leaving Saturday’s game in the first quarter after taking a hit to his right knee. With the two all-conference contenders sidelined, Georgia freshman J.J. Green gained 129 yards on 17 carries; fellow freshman Brendan Douglas scored once and gained 25 yards on 10 carries.

Georgia’s defense was better, though not markedly improved: UT still gained 404 yards, 189 on the ground, and converted 10-of-20 third- and fourth-down conversions. The Bulldogs inserted another pair of freshmen into the lineup in the secondary: Quincy Mauger started at free safety in place of Tray Matthews, another freshman, while Shaq Wiggins got the start as a fifth defensive back.

For Oregon, meanwhile, a 45-point win against Tennessee is the win that keeps on giving – once on Sept. 14, again on Oct. 5. The question for voters, media and coaches alike: What does Georgia’s near-loss say about the Ducks?

The rivalry between the SEC and the Pac-12 is one fought primarily in the polls, off the field, and each league – and its supporters – looks for toeholds in the narrowest nooks and crannies. What does Georgia’s overtime win mean for the SEC? What does it say about the Pac-12? What can it say about the Pac-12 as it compares to the SEC? The bicoastal comparison continues.

Pure Heroine is the début studio album by New Zealand singer-songwriter Lorde, planned for release on 24 September 2013, through Universal Music. The première will be six weeks before Ella Yelich-O’Connor (aka Lorde)’s seventeenth birthday, having been spotted at the age of twelve by A&R scout Scott Maclachlan, who signed her to Universal records. Recording for the album started soon after she released the critically acclaimed extended play The Love Club EP (March 2013).[citation needed] Yelich-O’Connor co-wrote the album with its producer, Joel Little.

The album was preceded by the release of The Love Club EP single “Royals“, which peaked at number one in New Zealand as well as peaking within the top five of Australia, Canada and America. “Royals” was followed by the release of “Tennis Court” in June 2013. In mid-September 2013, the third single, “Team” was released.

Background

“The goal for me is to make a body of work that is cohesive, that feels like an album and is something that I’m going to be proud of. I’m working on an album at the moment and it seems a lot of albums lately don’t feel like a cohesive set of songs that complement each other and mean something as a group. If I can make something which does feel like that, and feels right and true and good, then I will have succeeded.”

 — Yelich-O’Connor, on her objectives for Pure Heroine.[2]

From the age of 14, Yelich-O’Connor worked with Universal to develop her sound and artistic vision. She was spotted at the age of 12 by A&R scout Scott Maclachlan, after he saw a video of her singing in a talent show at her school, Belmont Intermediate.[3] Maclachlan later signed her to Universal at the age of 13 and began working with songwriters at 14. Yelich-O’Connor began writing songs at the age of “13 or 14” using her guitar.[4][5]

Having had recording under-way in November 2012,[6] The Love Club EP was released digitally in March 2013, and on CD in May 2013, with five songs including the number one hit “Royals“. On 27 May 2013, “Royals” was covered by girl group Gap 5, on New Zealand television’s The X Factor and mentored by Melanie Blatt.

Immediately prior to beginning work on Pure Heroine, Yelich-O’Connor stated her intentions for the début album to be a “cohesive” work.[2] As with The Love Club EP, Pure Heroine was recorded with producer Joel Little at Golden Age Studios in Auckland.[7][8]

Lead single “Royals” is a minimal art pop song of an experimental nature; it incorporates elements from different genres to create a new sound. Along with mainly chillwave, the song is influenced by indie pop, pop, downtempo, ambient, and blues. It follows the typical blues chord progression of D-C-G and is written in the key of D at a slow tempo of 84 BPM. It is written in common time. The song has a similar rhythm to a snap song.[citation needed]

Lorde wrote the lyrics to “Royals” in only half an hour.[9] She was influenced by rap music and singer Lana Del Rey “I was listening to a lot of rap, but also a lot of Lana Del Rey, because she’s obviously really hip-hop influenced, but all those references to expensive alcohol, beautiful clothes and beautiful cars – I was thinking, ‘This is so opulent, but it’s also bullshit.’”[10]

The album’s sixth song, “Team”, contains a “crashing, synth-heavy beat” and was described by Billboard as being “darkly melodic.”[11] Lyrically, the song touches up on her “disconnect with modern pop music” and the difference between onscreen portrayals and reality.[11]

Officially released digitally in March 2013, and on CD on May 2013, The Love Club EP featured five songs including “Royals“. “Royals” debuted at number 1 on the New Zealand Top 40 on 15 March 2013 and remained in the top position for three weeks.[12] On the same day, The Love Club EP debuted in the number 2 position on the album chart, behind David Bowie’s The Next Day, which also debuted that week. In August 2013, Lorde became the first woman to top the Billboard Alternative Songs chart in the United States since Tracy Bonham in 1996.[13]

The “Tennis Court” single was released in New Zealand on 8 June 2013.[14] The Tennis Court EP was released digitally in the UK on 7 June (due to the timezone difference) and physically on 22 June.[15][16] It was played during the BBC coverage of the 2013 Wimbledon Championships Ladies Final. On 14 June 2013, Lorde’s single debuted at number 1 on the New Zealand Top 40 singles chart. In the same week, she also became the first New Zealand artist to simultaneously have four songs in the top 20 tracks of the New Zealand Top 40. Previously, Titanium held this record with three songs.[17]

“Team” is the third single from the album.[18] It was leaked by Australian radio station Triple J on 12 September and as a result, the single was released digitally in Australia and New Zealand on 13 September.[11][19][20] The single became available in the United States on 13 September as part of the pre-order for Pure Heroine.[21]

Yelich-O’Connor was the replacement for Frank Ocean, who cancelled due to illness, at the 2013 Splendour in the Grass Festival. As Lorde, Yelich-O’Connor performed before 10,000 people in northern Byron Bay, Australia, where the festival is based as of 2013.[23]

In September 2013, Lorde appeared on New Zealand’s 3rd Degree[24] and performed on Later… with Jools Holland.[25][26]

Postal Service Won’t Shut Down but Will Default on Its Debt

October 1, 2013 at 9:30 am

Newscom

Newscom

The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) defaulted on its debt last night. No, it has nothing to do with the partial shutdown of the government. The USPS is not affected by that. Rather, it has its very own, parallel fiscal crisis that threatens its viability as an institution.

Yesterday’s default—on $5.6 billion owed to the U.S. Treasury for funding of retiree health benefits—will be the third such default in as many years. The USPS just doesn’t have the money. After seven straight years of deficits, the USPS is just about out of cash. And things are likely to get worse before they get better: Postmaster General Patrick Donahue reports that by mid-October, the government-owned enterprise will have no more than five days’ worth of cash on hand. That’s a dangerously low amount. With an unexpected uptick in expenses or slowdown in revenue, the USPS’s coffers could be wiped clean.

A shutdown on operations is unlikely. Mail will be delivered next month, but the present path is unsustainable.

Some blame the Postal Service’s financial woes on the very debts it has defaulted on, which are used to pre-fund the USPS’s obligations to its retirees. But the root cause goes deeper: the rapidly shrinking volume of mail, as consumers move to electronic forms of communication. Since 2007 alone, the amount of first-class mail has shrunk 30 percent. Another 40 percent may be gone by 2020.

The Postal Service itself has long been sounding the alarm on this growing financial crisis. To address the short-term lack of cash, it has requested an increase in postage rates. But more fundamental reform is needed to give the Postal Service a chance at long-term survival.

Congress, however, has blocked reform at every turn. Plans to save money by reducing Saturday deliveries and reducing the number of post offices have been blocked on Capitol Hill. Unless these and other restrictions on the USPS’s efforts to reform itself are lifted, the Postal Service’s future—and taxpayers’ pocketbooks—will be at risk.

Figuring out Lorde’s Christian Roots Part 5

UPDATED (David Bruce commented “She didn’t say she was a big Jesus believer. She said she was a big Yeezus believer. Which is a Kanye West album. Which incidentally is a blasphemous, hateful piece of garbage from what I’ve heard of it.” This sets me straight concerning what Lorde said in the video that I saw. She did not say that she was a “big Jesus believer.” )

It is hard to figure out this New Zealand newcomer and her Christian roots but I am going to attempt to in this series of posts. Here is an interview where she describes herself as a “big Jesus believer.

In the song “Tennis Court”.

I have to admit that I was disappointed that she cursed in this song below but there is no need for it.

Don’t you think that it’s boring how people talk
Making smart with their words again – well, I’m bored
Because I’m doing this for the thrill of it, killing it
Never not chasing the million things I want
And I am only as young as the minute is full of it
Getting pumped up on the little bright things I bought
But I know they’ll never own me, yeah

Baby, be the class clown, I’ll be the beauty queen in tears
It’s a new art form showing people how little we care, yeah
We’re so happy even when we’re smiling out of fear
Let’s go down to the tennis court and talk it up like, yeah, yeah

Pretty soon I’ll be getting on my first plane
I’ll see the veins of my city like they do in space
But my head’s filling up fast with the wicked games, up in flames
How can they f&*% with the fun again when I’m known
And my boys trip me up with their heads again, loving them
Everything’s cool when we’re all in line for the throne
But I know it’s not forever, yeah

Baby, be the class clown, I’ll be the beauty queen in tears
It’s a new art form showing people how little we care, yeah
We’re so happy even when we’re smiling out of fear
Let’s go down to the tennis court and talk it up like, yeah, yeah

It looked alright in the pictures, yeah
Getting caught’s off with the trip though, isn’t it, yeah
I’ll fall apart, with all my heart, yeah
You could watch from your window, yeah
You could watch from your window

Baby, be the class clown, I’ll be the beauty queen in tears
It’s a new art form showing people how little we care, yeah
We’re so happy even when we’re smiling out of fear
Let’s go down to the tennis court and talk it up like, yeah, yeah
And talk it up like, yeah, yeah
And talk it up like, yeah, yeah
Let’s go down to the tennis court and talk it up like, yeah
And talk it up like, yeah, yeah
And talk it up like, yeah, yeah
Let’s go down to the tennis court and talk it up like, yeah, yeah

  • General Comment:I think this song is basically criticizing modern individuals in their inability to live the truth (especially regarding emotions).
Boring how people talk– chit chat has no meaning
class clown vs. crying beauty queen– humor a way of denying emotions
smiling out of fear– putting on a false expression
you could watch from the window– detachment

My Interpretation:I think the tennis court aspect of this song is less literal in terms of those country clubs etc. Lorde is only 16 – I think it’s more likely she’s singing about being young and famous, and having all these pretty things and being surrounded by people all the time, yet with stardom comes a certain fear and the constant threat of ”falling apart”. so what people do is put on a brave face.

General Comment:It’s about putting on faces to act like they fit in with the lifestyle of people that go to country clubs and play tennis (typical WASPy rich people), but in actuality, they’re masking their emotions with joyful faces – “we’re so happy, even when we’re smiling out of fear” in order to promote the idea that their day-to-day is something to be admired and desired, i.e., pretending to be have direction and purpose in their ritzy lives, but in reality, they have no idea what the f&*% they’re doing.

Open letter to President Obama (Part 420) Bailouts are legal corruption

(Emailed to White House on 1-14-13.)

President Obama c/o The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW
Washington, DC 20500

Dear Mr. President,

I know that you receive 20,000 letters a day and that you actually read 10 of them every day. I really do respect you for trying to get a pulse on what is going on out here.

There is no free money out there. Somebody has to always pay.

Bailout Nation

January 13, 2013 by Dan Mitchell

I have a serious question for readers. What’s worse, bailouts for government or bailouts for the private sector?

Yes, both are bad, but is it worse to bail out a bankrupt entitlement program, such as Social Security, or it is worse to bail out an industry, such as the financial sector?

Bailout gravy train cartoonTo bail out the housing sector, or to bail out Medicare? Fannie and Freddie, or GM and Chrysler?

All these examples involve huge amounts of money, and both private-sector and public-sector bailouts have perverse long-run effects, but which is worse?

And don’t forget there are lots of other bailouts in our future, as discussed on this interview for Fox Business News.

The interview took place before Christmas, but the topic is even more relevant today since the budget season is about to begin.

Most of the discussion was about government agencies and programs that may get more handouts, though bailouts for the Federal Housing Administration and the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation would be indirect bailouts for big business and housing.

So we’d get the worst of all worlds, more government spending and more cronyism.

Or, as they call it in Washington, a win-win situation.

But I call it legal corruption.

Thank you so much for your time. I know how valuable it is. I also appreciate the fine family that you have and your commitment as a father and a husband.

Sincerely,

Everette Hatcher III, 13900 Cottontail Lane, Alexander, AR 72002, ph 501-920-5733, lowcostsqueegees@yahoo.com

It is hard to figure out this New Zealand newcomer and her Christian roots but I am going to attempt to in this series of posts. Lorde is hard to get a handle on. She curses like she does in this interview but she makes clear that she is not a feminist which is a very evangelical thing to say.

Interview: Lorde

LORDE

Lorde is Ella Yelich-O’Connor, the almost-17 New Zealander made famous at home by 2012′s The Love Club EP. Over the past eight months, its languid, eye-rolling single “Royals” has gone global, attracting over a million Soundcloud clicks; in the US, it’s climbed quickly through the barrens of rock radio. Ahead of her proper album, to be released on September 30th by Lava/Republic, she traveled to the US for the first time, playing shows in New York and LA. Working toward a pop career since age 12, she’s so far managed to protect her sound, private life and public image. Sprouting tall atop chunky platform sandals, twirling the fray of her glorious mountain of hair in a calm before what may soon become a chaotic storm, she spoke before that New York show in carefully chosen soundbites about money, subtweets and whether or not she’ll get to go back to school this fall.

You’ve said that Lorde is a character. What are that character’s qualities? I don’t think it’s so much a character. It’s more like when I perform I have to switch something on, because I’m a very reserved person in general. I’ve acted in plays and stuff my whole life, and there’s definitely an aspect of faking a little bit. Stepping into a kind of role. Obviously, entertaining a huge crowd is not the best thing for a shy person to be doing. Confidence is weird. I’m not a super confident person. So I just switch on a little bit of that. People are coming to see you perform material that you love, so you’ve got to put it into another dimension.

“Royals” pokes fun at canned images of luxury. If not gowns and diamonds, what luxuries do you actually crave? A big luxury for me at the moment has been time, because I’ve been so busy always. Just being able to go to a house party or eat dinner at home, those sorts of things I’m definitely understanding the value of. Money has never been like a big thing for me. I haven’t bought anything yet. I’m broke all the time, always have been. But I’m gonna buy a double bed, I’m just gonna do that. Even now spending more than $50 on something I’m like, Ohhh, I don’t know. Money is like, weird.

Teenagers—and adults—change so much. It’s easy to feel embarrassed at the person you were just months ago, or to feel preoccupied with becoming better. Do you ever feel that way? Is it intense seeing your teenager-hood documented in public? It’s a little bit stressful. That’s what’s so weird for me about writing my music. I was 15 when I wrote the EP. Now I’m 17 in a couple months and I’m like, uuueghhh–what? Everything is weird. I definitely found that with writing the album. Even stuff I wrote a few months ago feels like, dated. I’ve gotten way better at saying: Okay, I wrote that when I was 15, leave it alone. For myself. Because otherwise I’ll just nitpick it. But I’m also glad that I didn’t decide to release any music until I was really happy, cause I didn’t have any of that, “She had two terrible EPs as a folk singer and now she’s reinvented herself.”

You were signed at 12. Starting then, how did you go about moving toward music you were satisfied with? At first I was learning how to write, when I was 13. When you’re learning how to do something you’re not very good at it. I’ve always been very into cleanliness—there aren’t many photos of me online, and I do all my social networks and everything is very much the way I want it to be seen. And being a little bit clean about how I release the music and just putting those small amounts online is me controlling how people would view it, I guess.

Do you feel like you’ve had to become more guarded than your peers? I’m still like, not very famous and definitely have a very private life. It’s only been six, eight months since I released the EP—since people had any idea who I was. So I’ve been able to have a fairly normal time of things, and not be like the Disney kids who like have no idea what it’s like to grow up at all. I’m not the sort of artist that TMZ can write about like, “She stepped out with no makeup today!” Because 80 percent of the time I’m not wearing any makeup. But I understand that everybody has a smartphone and you’re being crazy if you think that to a degree, your private and public lives aren’t gonna link a bit and mesh over.

What’s the appropriate response to a subtweet? I don’t know man. You should do the sassy, passive aggressive, slightly ambiguous thing. Tweeting is funny—you should just reply, anything. It doesn’t matter what you say, because they’ll know that you know.

You’ve written a song for the album called “Ribs,” and said it’s about getting older. How do you feel about getting older? I wrote the song about—we went out this one night, this huge party, I think I wrote it at like 4AM. I was hazy. Obviously I’m in an industry where a lot of importance is placed on how old I am, which has always seemed crazy to me. When I put my music out I didn’t say how old I was because I didn’t want that to overtake what I was making. Even now, people are like, “Holy shit, I didn’t know you were that age!” Maybe I’m just really neurotic. But soon I’m gonna be 20, and soon I’m gonna be 30. Being in an industry that’s about youth, there’s always another cool thing in front of you. I kind of always think about it. But I think I’ll be fine.

As a young woman, have you felt it necessary to call attention to the control you’ve taken over things? Or to remind people that you’re both a writer and singer? Absolutely. I think a lot of women in this industry maybe aren’t doing so well for the girls. I’ve read interviews where certain big female stars are like, “I’m not a feminist.” I’m like, That’s not what it’s about. She’s great, but I listened to that Lana Del Rey record and the whole time I was just thinking it’s so unhealthy for young girls to be listening to, you know: “I’m nothing without you.” This sort of shirt-tugging, desperate, don’t leave me stuff. That’s not a good thing for young girls, even young people, to hear. I don’t really have any girls songs [for the new record]. I should have. But I think the way in which I assert myself as not being about that stuff is by writing about it in a way that’s a bit less obvious and less cloying. There are a couple songs on the record about relationship-y stuff, but I make sure to write about it in a way that you don’t know if it’s a friend or a relationship, because that’s something that’s personal to me.

Your mother is a poet. Did she put a lot of importance on writing well? I’ve always written short fiction and read short fiction. Short fiction is like the most difficult thing to do, because everything’s got to be short and clear and potent because you’ve got like 15 pages to create this amazing thing that people will remember. So I guess that stuck with me in writing songs. I guess in general, if you can say something in five words rather than 20, and it’s still cool, you should.

Do you write with singing in mind? When I record a song, I don’t tend to sing the whole song through. Just the way which I write melodies, sometimes would make that a bit difficult. So learning to sing something live, that’s a real process for me, cause I didn’t write a melody with the intention of it being sung live half of the time. Generally I like to do things in a short space of time—I like to record over a day or a couple of days. I’m not the sort of person who’s like, three takes and she’s done. It takes me some time. I like to experiment with a bunch of different tones to hit on something that’s right.

Are teenagers often misunderstood by pop songs, or pop culture in general? There are a lot of TV shows about kids, that are not maybe as accurate as they could be. As well, half the stuff that is written about being young is written by 40-year-old songwriters who’ve been doing it for 20 years. I guess I just sometimes I just wanna be a little more straight up about the nature of being a young person. I have this song on the record, and it has two lines on it which were very important for me to put on there. One of them was: We live in cities you never see onscreen. Because I like in Auckland, which is definitely not New York. It just felt important for me to be speaking for the minority. Coming from a small city, somewhere that feels unimportant, you just wanna get out of there. You’re whole teenage life The other line is: I’m kind of over getting told to throw my hands up in the air. Because, there’s been so much of that in pop music, and I’m like, this is the stupidest thing. Being told to put your hands in the air? That’s the last thing I wanna do right now. I just wanted to be a bit more realistic. I don’t if that’s relating to young people in general, or just people who listen to pop.

Has the internet made New Zealand less secluded from pop culture; closer to New York? Coming from New Zealand, all the music I listen to is not made by New Zealanders. People never come to New Zealand to play a show because it’s in the middle of nowhere. I think it would be impossible not to be an internet kid coming from New Zealand, because culturally it’s a little barren. I have a Tumblr–I’m always on Tumblr, on TMZ or whatever.

What are you favorite Tumblrs? I really like this one called Dry Heave, which is this art one I guess. And then there’s one called H R Studio Plus, which is just like, a designer or something but they post every week, it’s almost like a playlist but it’s all images.

Will you return to school in the fall? I have this year and one more [of school left]. I’ve been taking some time off, but I hope to go back in the fall. School’s okay.

Earlier several members of Coldplay mentioned Nick Cave as an influence on their group. Nick Cave has some mixed up views and has been also struggling with the Christian views he was taught as a child.

An Interventionist God Hot

Music Video

Title Into My Arms
Artist Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
Director Jonathan Glazer
Year Released 2005

The lyrics of this song are beautiful on their own, but when they are paired with what seem to be people responding to their beauty, they are even more powerful.

It makes me ask, what is behind the tears? Are they moved by the sincerity of the words? Do they weep because of a lost love? Or could it be the emotion of a person who does not believe in a God who will listen and act but desperately wishes such a god existed?

The production cost of this video must have been relatively small, but Glazer is able to make it work. Capturing raw emotion on film like this cannot be simple. Either these people are truly connecting with Cave’s lyrics or they should all be nominated for an Oscar.

And to walk, like Christ, in grace and love
And guide you into my arms

Beginning with the line “I don’t believe in an interventionist God” is what brings this song such depth and complexity. This song is one of the more wonderful prayers ever put to music—and it is uttered by a person who doesn’t seem to think that it will make any difference.

I wonder how many people pray ever day even though they don’t think it matters. How many of us pray, not out of belief, but because it seems like a beautiful idea?

Do you weep along with the people in this video? Do you not believe in a God who will ‘intervene’ but are moved by the idea of One Who Would?

Into My Arms (lyrics)

by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds

I don’t believe in an interventionist God
But I know, darling, that you do
But if I did I would kneel down and ask Him
Not to intervene when it came to you
Not to touch a hair on your head
To leave you as you are
And if He felt He had to direct you
Then direct you into my arms

Into my arms, O Lord
Into my arms, O Lord
Into my arms, O Lord
Into my arms

And I don’t believe in the existence of angels
But looking at you I wonder if that’s true
But if I did I would summon them together
And ask them to watch over you
To each burn a candle for you
To make bright and clear your path
And to walk, like Christ, in grace and love
And guide you into my arms

Into my arms, O Lord
Into my arms, O Lord
Into my arms, O Lord
Into my arms

And I believe in Love
And I know that you do too
And I believe in some kind of path
That we can walk down, me and you
So keep your candlew burning
And make her journey bright and pure
That she will keep returning
Always and evermore

Into my arms, O Lord
Into my arms, O Lord
Into my arms, O Lord
Into my arms
