Figuring out Lorde’s Christian Roots Part 5 (UPDATED)

Figuring out Lorde’s Christian Roots Part 5

UPDATED (David Bruce commented “She didn’t say she was a big Jesus believer. She said she was a big Yeezus believer. Which is a Kanye West album. Which incidentally is a blasphemous, hateful piece of garbage from what I’ve heard of it.” This sets me straight concerning what Lorde said in the video that I saw. She did not say that she was a “big Jesus believer.” )

It is hard to figure out this New Zealand newcomer and her Christian roots but I am going to attempt to in this series of posts. Here is an interview where she describes herself as a “big Jesus believer.

In the song “Tennis Court”.

I have to admit that I was disappointed that she cursed in this song below but there is no need for it.

Don’t you think that it’s boring how people talk
Making smart with their words again – well, I’m bored
Because I’m doing this for the thrill of it, killing it
Never not chasing the million things I want
And I am only as young as the minute is full of it
Getting pumped up on the little bright things I bought
But I know they’ll never own me, yeah

Baby, be the class clown, I’ll be the beauty queen in tears
It’s a new art form showing people how little we care, yeah
We’re so happy even when we’re smiling out of fear
Let’s go down to the tennis court and talk it up like, yeah, yeah

Pretty soon I’ll be getting on my first plane
I’ll see the veins of my city like they do in space
But my head’s filling up fast with the wicked games, up in flames
How can they f&*% with the fun again when I’m known
And my boys trip me up with their heads again, loving them
Everything’s cool when we’re all in line for the throne
But I know it’s not forever, yeah

Baby, be the class clown, I’ll be the beauty queen in tears
It’s a new art form showing people how little we care, yeah
We’re so happy even when we’re smiling out of fear
Let’s go down to the tennis court and talk it up like, yeah, yeah

It looked alright in the pictures, yeah
Getting caught’s off with the trip though, isn’t it, yeah
I’ll fall apart, with all my heart, yeah
You could watch from your window, yeah
You could watch from your window

Baby, be the class clown, I’ll be the beauty queen in tears
It’s a new art form showing people how little we care, yeah
We’re so happy even when we’re smiling out of fear
Let’s go down to the tennis court and talk it up like, yeah, yeah
And talk it up like, yeah, yeah
And talk it up like, yeah, yeah
Let’s go down to the tennis court and talk it up like, yeah
And talk it up like, yeah, yeah
And talk it up like, yeah, yeah
Let’s go down to the tennis court and talk it up like, yeah, yeah

  • General Comment:I think this song is basically criticizing modern individuals in their inability to live the truth (especially regarding emotions).
Boring how people talk– chit chat has no meaning
class clown vs. crying beauty queen– humor a way of denying emotions
smiling out of fear– putting on a false expression
you could watch from the window– detachment

My Interpretation:I think the tennis court aspect of this song is less literal in terms of those country clubs etc. Lorde is only 16 – I think it’s more likely she’s singing about being young and famous, and having all these pretty things and being surrounded by people all the time, yet with stardom comes a certain fear and the constant threat of ”falling apart”. so what people do is put on a brave face.

General Comment:It’s about putting on faces to act like they fit in with the lifestyle of people that go to country clubs and play tennis (typical WASPy rich people), but in actuality, they’re masking their emotions with joyful faces – “we’re so happy, even when we’re smiling out of fear” in order to promote the idea that their day-to-day is something to be admired and desired, i.e., pretending to be have direction and purpose in their ritzy lives, but in reality, they have no idea what the f&*% they’re doing.
