Adrian Rogers on Revelation 12 and the Country of Israel!!!

In light of recent developments in the news the future fulfillment of Revelation chapter 12 does not look so far-fetched. Obviously Israel is the mother that produced the Messiah (verse 1) and Satan is the dragon that dragged 1/3 of the angels out of heaven with him. Jesus is the child who was born “who will rule over all nations.”

Adrian Rogers noted:

In figurative language, Satan’s tail is so long he is able to sweep a third of the stars from heaven. Now, these are not literal stars; here “stars” represent angels. God judged Satan and cast him out of heaven. When he fell, one-third of the angels fell with him. Does it worry you that one-third of the angels are now following Satan’s directives? Let me encourage you that two-thirds of the angels didn’t fall. We have two angels for every demon! Satan is the ultimate rebel. See Isaiah 14:13-14.

It seems as though the eyes of the entire world are continually upon the tiny state of Israel, and your eyes need to be there as well, for the Jews are God’s people and Israel is a land of destiny. Israel is God’s measuring rod and blueprint for what He is doing in the world.

And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars: 2And she being with child cried, travailing in birth, and pained to be delivered. Revelation 12:1-2.

Scholars say that the “wonder of heaven” symbolized in the figurative language of this passage is the nation of Israel.

Where else do you recall Scripture talking about a vision of the sun, moon and 11 or 12 stars?

Genesis 37:9 : Then he had another dream and told it to his brothers. “Listen to my latest dream,” he boasted. “The sun, moon, and eleven stars bowed low before me!”

In Joseph’s memorable, prophetic dream, his father—the patriarch Jacob—his mother and 11 brothers, who were the heads of the 12 tribes of Israel, were depicted as the sun, moon and 11 stars (Joseph being the 12th).

Genesis 12:3:  I will bless those who bless you and curse those who curse you; and the entire world will be blessed because of you.”

Note that both blessings and cursings are directly linked to how we deal with the nation of Israel.

God called and ordained Israel. It was through Israel all the world would be blessed. (Romans 9:4-5) Every child of God is blessed because of Israel.

A time will arrive during the Tribulation when the Jews will come to Jesus Christ as their Messiah. The Word of God is full of verses (like Zechariah 12:10 and 13:1) which support this prophecy. And Revelation 12:17 states, “the remnant of her seed [Israel]” will “keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.”

Romans 11:25-26:  I want you to know about this truth from God, dear brothers, so that you will not feel proud and start bragging. Yes, it is true that some of the Jews have set themselves against the Gospel now, but this will last only until all of you Gentiles have come to Christ—those of you who will. 26 And then all Israel will be saved.

Do you remember what the prophets said about this? “There shall come out of Zion a Deliverer, and he shall turn the Jews from all ungodliness.

God has not forsaken His ancient people. There’s going to be a fountain opened to them that is filled with the blood of the Lord Jesus.

How can we go about our day-to-day lives without giving everything we have to Jesus Christ? How can we not love Him with a burning, blazing, passionate, emotional love? And how can we not love those whom He loves?

Yes, God has a plan for Israel—

  • conceived by God in eternity past
  • initiated when He called Abraham
  • and to be brought to fulfillment one day when all Israel will “look upon Him whom they have pierced” (John 19:36-39) and make Him their Lord.

We are to love what God loves, and God loves His chosen people. He has made them a blessing that they might be a blessing to the world.

Thank God that there is coming a day when all of this will unfold. However and whenever it does, we know this: Jesus is Lord and He’s coming again. Praise His name!

Revelation 12 Good News Translation (GNT)

The Woman and the Dragon

12 Then a great and mysterious sight appeared in the sky. There was a woman, whose dress was the sun and who had the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars on her head. She was soon to give birth, and the pains and suffering of childbirth made her cry out.

Another mysterious sight appeared in the sky. There was a huge red dragon with seven heads and ten horns and a crown on each of his heads. With his tail he dragged a third of the stars out of the sky and threw them down to the earth. He stood in front of the woman, in order to eat her child as soon as it was born. Then she gave birth to a son, who will rule over all nations with an iron rod. But the child was snatched away and taken to God and his throne. The woman fled to the desert, to a place God had prepared for her, where she will be taken care of for 1,260 days.

Then war broke out in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, who fought back with his angels; but the dragon was defeated, and he and his angels were not allowed to stay in heaven any longer. The huge dragon was thrown out—that ancient serpent, named the Devil, or Satan, that deceived the whole world. He was thrown down to earth, and all his angels with him.

10 Then I heard a loud voice in heaven saying, “Now God’s salvation has come! Now God has shown his power as King! Now his Messiah has shown his authority! For the one who stood before our God and accused believers day and night has been thrown out of heaven. 11 They won the victory over him by the blood of the Lamb and by the truth which they proclaimed; and they were willing to give up their lives and die. 12 And so be glad, you heavens, and all you that live there! But how terrible for the earth and the sea! For the Devil has come down to you, and he is filled with rage, because he knows that he has only a little time left.”

13 When the dragon realized that he had been thrown down to the earth, he began to pursue the woman who had given birth to the boy. 14 She was given the two wings of a large eagle in order to fly to her place in the desert, where she will be taken care of for three and a half years, safe from the dragon’s attack. 15 And then from his mouth the dragon poured out a flood of water after the woman, so that it would carry her away.16 But the earth helped the woman; it opened its mouth and swallowed the water that had come from the dragon’s mouth. 17 The dragon was furious with the woman and went off to fight against the rest of her descendants, all those who obey God’s commandments and are faithful to the truth revealed by Jesus. 18 And the dragon stoodon the seashore.

Steve Bucci on the Rise of Antisemitism in Europe

With: Steve Bucci

This is a RUSH transcript from “The O’Reilly Factor,” August 4, 2014. This copy may not be in its final form and may be updated.

Watch “The O’Reilly Factor” weeknights at 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. ET!

O’REILLY: “Unresolved Problems Segment” tonight, the rise of anti- Semitism. The conflict between Israel and Hamas has galvanized people all over the world to take sides. In Miami Beach worshipers at a synagogue recently found their cars vandalized. Also in a northeast state county a swastika painted on a synagogue. And all over the world there are anti- Jewish demonstrations.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

RON DERMER, ISRAELI AMBASSADOR TO THE U.S.: There was hope that in the wake of the Holocaust, that anti-Semitism would end and that the establishment of Israel would bring it to an end. And really what happened with historic perspective is that the brief period after the Holocaust made it politically incorrect to be anti-Semitic. And now you have anti- Semitism really coming to the surface again.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

O’REILLY: Joining us now from Washington Steve Bucci from the Heritage Foundation. So how bad is this current anti-Semitism? Is it a dangerous situation or just an annoyance?

STEVE BUCCI, THE HERITAGE FOUNDATION: Well, I have to say, Bill, it’s way more than an annoyance. As you mentioned in your examples, we have problems with it here. Europe is far worse. They have had major riots that have not just been anti-Israeli policy, but are blatantly anti-Jewish.

O’REILLY: What is driving those demonstrations? Is it all jihadist sympathizers?

BUCCI: No, I mean they are predominantly the immigrant Muslim populations in Germany and France, for instance. But there are significant numbers of German citizens, native German citizens and native French citizens either from the far right or the far left who blame Israel and are turning it into an anti-Jewish campaign.

O’REILLY: Is there a theme? I mean when you say blame Israel it’s fairly rational clear-minded people understand that Hamas is a terror group and it is committed to killing Jews and wiping Israel off the face of the earth. That’s not debatable. That’s a fact.

And then when Hamas starts to attack and throw rockets into civilian areas in Israel, Israel of course has to defend itself. So there is not a rationality there or a moral equivalency. So then when people take the sides of Hamas, this is my question. Is it just they hate Jews like they would hate Irish or hate blacks? Is that what drives it?

BUCCI: You and I would agree there’s no rational defense for what Hamas does. But some of their supporters are not rational and they have translated this into an attack on all Jews. That anti-Semitism has been below the surface but not much below and this conflict has now allowed it to come to the surface.

O’REILLY: Now, historically speaking there was an anti-Semitism in Europe because many of the people who controlled the land and the banks were Jewish and that had resentment among the people who didn’t have money and didn’t have land. But now it’s not that way. Now, it’s a pluralistic society. So I’m not understanding why a German or French person non jihadist — I understand that crazy philosophy — why they would hate Jews. Jews have a very small minority. They are not around very much. In America is like four million Jews, that’s all. Why do they hate these people? For what reason?

BUCCI: It’s a very visceral thing. It goes back in some cases the far right an alignment with Nazism. The far left with strong Communism — both of whom hated Jews and persecuted them. So the connection is still there.

O’REILLY: But why? Why did the Nazis and the Communists select the Jews? Because I think our audience in America needs to know the historical perspective. Why were they singled out?

BUCCI: In the case of the Nazis, it was Hitler’s irrational view that Jews were somehow subhuman, were less than the pure Germans of which he wasn’t one either. On the left side, the Communists, a lot of them were Jews which started out but they turned it around particularly with Stalin where he saw them as competitor and a group that needed to be crushed and destroyed so he could have full power.

O’REILLY: So isn’t it though that the Jewish people are very close knit and that was — I don’t know — that was a red flag to some people. I never really understood the anti-Semitism. I never really got it. I think it was economically based back in the Middle Ages. But I will give you the last word.

BUCCI: Well, it’s — they have a closeness other groups have a closeness. The Jews mostly were forced to have a closeness just to survive.

O’REILLY: Just to survive, absolutely.

BUCCI: It is irrational.

O’REILLY: Now, do you think it’s on a rise in America or you think these are just selected nuts doing this kind of stuff?

BUCCI: I hope to be optimistic and say it’s not on a rise across the board. But there are enough people that feel the release to do this because of what’s going on in Israel. And hopefully we can keep it down in our country and eliminate it.

O’REILLY: Well, we don’t tolerate it. We find it, we’ll expose it.

Mr. Bucci, thanks very much. We appreciate it.

Woody Allen’s Magic in the Moonlight: first reviews published

It’s a 20s Riviera romance with conjurors and psychics, Colin Firth and Emma Stone – and the word is, US critics predict a hit, albeit a whimsical one for the older audience

The world premiere of a Woody Allen film is always a bit of an event, and on the back of his revived box office fortunes (with Midnight in Paris) and critical reputation (for the Oscar-winning Blue Jasmine), his new one, Magic in the Moonlight, has been anticipated with some fervour. It was nowhere to be seen at the last Cannes film festival – where, with the film’s Riviera setting, it was thought a certainty to screen – but instead received its debut screening in New York on 17 July.

With an eclectic cast including Colin Firth, Emma Stone, Jacki Weaver, Marcia Gay Harden and Simon McBurney, Magic in the Moonlight has been shrouded in the habitual Allen secrecy since its title was revealedlast October 2013. The film’s US distributors Sony Pictures Classics filled in lots of the blanks on10 July, when they released a long-form synopsis, explaining that Firth plays a stage magician who is on a mission to debunk professional clairvoyant Stone. Now, however, the first reviews are in.

They are led by the two US trade papers Variety and the Hollywood Reporter; while neither are acclaiming Magic in the Moonlight as a Blue Jasmine level late-masterpiece, Variety is considerably kinder, with its chief film critic Scott Foundas describing the film as “a high-spirited bauble that goes down easy thanks to fleet comic pacing, a surfeit of ravishing Cote d’Azur vistas and the genuinely reactive chemistry of stars Colin Firth and Emma Stone”. It also suggests that the 1928-set film will “handily corner the upscale adult demo for the remainder of summer, continuing the Woodman’s late-career hot streak”. (In non-Variety-speak, that means they predict that it will have a strong appeal to the maturer end of the film audience.) Foundas also praises Magic’s photography, calling its “elegantly choreographed traveling master shots bathed in natural light” a key part of “one of his most beautifully made films.”

The Reporter, on the other hand, calls it “a fugacious bit of whimsy that can only be judged minor Woody Allen”. Critic Todd McCarthy said it “feels like a pale attempt to recapture a portion of the public that made Midnight in Paris by far Allen’s biggest hit ever.” He goes on to suggest that “Magic in the Moonlight does have a not-disagreeable expensive-vacation vibe to it. But the one-dimensional characters are mostly ones you’d want to avoid rather than spend a holiday with.” McCarthy also has little time for Firth’s performance, calling it “uncomfortable”, but is a little more complimentary to Stone, describing her as “lively” and “spontaneous”.

In contrast, critic Howard Feinstein, writing for the British trade magazine Screen International, declares that Firth “shines” in his role, and that “the acting is perhaps the strongest suit in the entire enterprise”. In his view, the film’s technical polish is a drawback: “The movie comes across as a tourist brochure, a collection of beautiful, inert postcards … the vintage cars gleam, as if they have just been washed and shined; the perfect period costumes seem just too freshly pressed.” But Feinstein reserves great praise for a key scene in which Stone and Firth shelter from a rainstorm together: it possesses an “aching beauty” and is “pure magic”.

Calling Magic in the Moonlight a “featherweight comedy”, the magazineLittle White Lies has a more angled take, suggesting it’s “a bit like having lunch with your ageing parents: strained, overly familiar, sometimes amusing but seldom genuinely funny”. Critic David Ehrlich’s view is that it’s “the kind of story that Allen could write in his sleep”, that the director “guides the story on auto-pilot, effortlessly pushing another fanciful premise to its logical conclusion” and that it moves forward “with the mechanical transparency of a car that’s lost its hood” – but that this familiarity actually works in the film’s favour: Allen is “effortlessly regurgitating his most familiar modes and tropes with such élan that the movie’s mediocrity ends up being its greatest charm”.

Magic in the Moonlight is released on 25 July in the US, on 28 August in Australia, and 19 September in the UK.

Open letter to President Obama (Part 641) Pro-life atheist Nat Hentoff: With Obama you will get more abortions!!!

Open letter to President Obama (Part 641)

(Emailed to White House on 6-12-13.)

President Obama c/o The White House 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW Washington, DC 20500

Dear Mr. President,

I know that you receive 20,000 letters a day and that you actually read 10 of them every day. I really do respect you for trying to get a pulse on what is going on out here. I know that you don’t agree with my pro-life views but I wanted to challenge you as a fellow Christian to re-examine your pro-choice view. Although we are both Christians and have the Bible as the basis for our moral views, I did want you to take a close look at the views of the pro-life atheist Nat Hentoff too.  Hentoff became convinced of the pro-life view because of secular evidence that shows that the unborn child is human. I would ask you to consider his evidence and then of course reverse your views on abortion.

Pro-life atheist Nat Hentoff: With Obama you will get more abortions!!!

Nat Hentoff is an atheist, but he became a pro-life activist because of the scientific evidence that shows that the unborn child is a distinct and separate human being and even has a separate DNA. His perspective is a very intriguing one that I thought you would be interested in. I have shared before many   cases (Bernard Nathanson, Donald Trump, Paul Greenberg, Kathy Ireland)    when other high profile pro-choice leaders have changed their views and this is just another case like those. I have contacted the White House over and over concerning this issue and have even received responses. I am hopeful that people will stop and look even in a secular way (if they are not believers) at this abortion debate and see that the unborn child is deserving of our protection. That is why the writings of Nat Hentoff of the Cato Institute are so crucial.

In the film series “WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE HUMAN RACE?” the arguments are presented  against abortion (Episode 1),  infanticide (Episode 2),   euthanasia (Episode 3), and then there is a discussion of the Christian versus Humanist worldview concerning the issue of “the basis for human dignity” in Episode 4 and then in the last episode a close look at the truth claims of the Bible.

I truly believe that many of the problems we have today in the USA are due to the advancement of humanism in the last few decades in our society. Ronald Reagan appointed the evangelical Dr. C. Everett Koop to the position of Surgeon General in his administration. He partnered with Dr. Francis Schaeffer in making the video below. It is very valuable information for Christians to have.  Actually I have included a video below that includes comments from him on this subject.

HENTOFF: New president, more abortions

Nat Hentoff

The Washington Times – Washington, DC
11/24/2008

OP-ED:Our new president-elect has not equivocated in his reverence for abortion rights. Speaking at a Planned Parenthood event on July 17, 2007, Barack Obama pledged that his first act as president would be to sign the Freedom of Choice Act. It is the most radical attack yet on the deep beliefs of millions of American pro-lifers.As Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer, a champion of the bill, exulted: “Women would have the absolute right to choose whether to continue or terminate their pregnancies before fetal viability, and that right would be protected by this legislation. The Freedom of Choice Act also supersedes any law, regulation or local ordinance that impinges on a woman’s right to choose,” she said. With regard to “fetal viability” – the ability to survive on his or her own – the ardent supporters of FOCA slide over the language in the surviving 2007 version of FOCA bill that, as Douglas Johnson of the National Right to Life Committee points out, “contains no objective criteria for ‘viability,’ but rather, requires that the judgment regarding ‘viability’ be left entirely in the hands of ‘the attending physician.’ “Guess who that would be? The abortionist! There’s more. The restrictions on “the absolute right to choose” would also apply even after “viability” if a woman wanted to abort what would undeniably be seen during pregnancy as a baby in ultrasound for reasons of her health. But the Supreme Court in 1973 (the same year as Roe v. Wade) in Doe v. Bolton defined very broadly “health” justification for aborting a viable human being, as “physical, emotional, psychological, familial and the woman’s age.” This was nearly a blank check to dispose of that aborted person. It’s no wonder that Mr. Obama opposed the Supreme Court decision that eventually ruled against the lawfulness of “partial-birth abortion,” which the late Democratic Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan (who was pro-choice) said was infanticide.

The rabidly pro-abortion Freedom of Choice Act Mr. Obama supports would – unless there is an unlikely successful filibuster in the Democratic controlled Senate – invalidate parental-notification laws; any state’s requirement of full disclosure of the physical and emotional risks inherent in abortion; and (can you believe this?) all laws prohibiting medical personnel other than licensed physicians from performing abortions because such restrictions might “interfere” with access to this absolute right to abortion.

This is respect for women? As of now, before our abortion president gets his wish, 26 states have informed-consent laws, 36 have parental-involvement laws and 34 states have restrictions on funding for abortions.

Also disposed of will be the “conscience rights” in many states. They include, Mr. Johnson reminds us, “all laws allowing doctors, nurses or other state-licensed professionals, and hospitals or other health care providers, to decline to provide or pay for abortions.” What about religiously based hospitals and clinics that refuse to perform abortions? At presidential press conferences, can we depend on at least some members of the Washington press corps to ask Mr. Obama about that provision or the others I’ve cited? Sen. Dianne Feinstein, California Democrat, heralded the election of Mr. Obama as “a new birth of freedom.” Not, however, for the early-stage human beings – each with his or her own distinct DNA – who, under this law, could never become citizens.

Matt Bowman, an attorney with the pro-life Alliance Defense Fund, projects that if FOCA is passed into law (Lifenews.com, Sept. 24), there will be an increase in abortion “by 125,000 per year” in the United States because of the abolition of laws in states that have parental involvement, informed-consent laws and funding restrictions. “Even with this minimum,” Mr. Bowman adds, “that’s 125,000 children that were not killed this year because we (still) have these laws, and 125,000 (added to the existing 1.3 million abortions) who will be killed in 2009” and beyond.

On Jan. 22, 2008, the 35th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, Mr. Obama said with pride: “Throughout my career, I’ve been a consistent and strong supporter of reproductive justice and have consistently had a 100 percent pro-choice rating with Planned Parenthood and NARAL Pro-Choice America … To truly honor (Roe v. Wade), we need to update the social contract so that women can free themselves and their children from violent relationships.”

What, Mr. President, can be more violent than murder by abortion? Alveda King, niece of Dr. Martin Luther King, said on Nov. 11 (Lifenews.com) that “his dream of full equality remains just a dream as long as unborn children continue to be treated no better than property. The elections are over. The pro-life battle begins anew.”

Thank you so much for your time. I know how valuable it is. I also appreciate the fine family that you have and your commitment as a father and a husband. Now after presenting the secular approach of Nat Hentoff I wanted to make some comments concerning our shared Christian faith.  I  respect you for putting your faith in Christ for your eternal life. I am pleading to you on the basis of the Bible to please review your religious views concerning abortion. It was the Bible that caused the abolition movement of the 1800’s and it also was the basis for Martin Luther King’s movement for civil rights and it also is the basis for recognizing the unborn children.

Dr. Schaeffer’s sweeping epic on the rise and decline of Western thought and Culture

_______________________

I love the works of Francis Schaeffer and I have been on the internet reading several blogs that talk about Schaeffer’s work and the work below was really helpful. Schaeffer’s film series “How should we then live?  Wikipedia notes, “According to Schaeffer, How Should We Then Live traces Western history from Ancient Rome until the time of writing (1976) along three lines: the philosophic, scientific, and religious.[3] He also makes extensive references to art and architecture as a means of showing how these movements reflected changing patterns of thought through time. Schaeffer’s central premise is: when we base society on the Bible, on the infinite-personal God who is there and has spoken,[4] this provides an absolute by which we can conduct our lives and by which we can judge society.  Here are some posts I have done on this series: Francis Schaeffer’s “How should we then live?” Video and outline of episode 10 “Final Choices” episode 9 “The Age of Personal Peace and Affluence”episode 8 “The Age of Fragmentation”episode 7 “The Age of Non-Reason” episode 6 “The Scientific Age”  episode 5 “The Revolutionary Age” episode 4 “The Reformation” episode 3 “The Renaissance”episode 2 “The Middle Ages,”, and  episode 1 “The Roman Age,” .

Book Report: Escape from Reason by Francis A. Schaeffer (1968)

Executive Summary: Thomas Aquinas is teh suck!!!1!!!

I don’t remember where I got this book; it’s either a book fair bag filler or something that was in the free bin at Hooked on Books. However, since I was on a short, smart book kick, I picked it up.

This cover calls the book a penetrating analysis of trends in modern thought. The introduction goes further: as it’s an evangelical book, its goal is to frame traditional, even fundamental Christian thought with modern philosophical schools of thought. As such, it studies the dual nature of man (nature and grace) and how this fundamental dual nature has been corrupted through various schools of philosophical thought. When Thomas Aquinas intimated that only man’s will suffered from The Fall but that the intellect was capable of arriving independently at grace through its observations of nature and so on, he set into motion the eventual slippery slope where the autonomous lower half of man will overrun the higher half.

Ergo, throughout philosophical history, Kant and Rousseau saying that Freedom is the higher order of man and Nature is the lower, but the mechanistic view of human nature eventually logically trumps freedom, or the Christian Existentialist view (courtesy of Kierkegaard) that divides man’s duality into reason and faith (where the leap of faith is rationally inexplicable), or the regular Existentialist view where an act of will is the highest order.

I don’t remember most of the primary texts that the author refers to, so I can only say that the book poses a relatively sound exploration of the theme. I’m not sure, though, whether I’d characterize the Existentialists as embracing the dual nature of man. The author refers specifically to Sartre’s Nausea and how the Existentialists triumphs over the absurd and achieves the higher portion of himself through an act of will, of seeking authenticity. I remember just enough of my Sartre to suspect that this is a convenient reading of true Existentialism, which is monoist in nature.

So although the book does take a couple things a priori, such as the basic framework of its evangelical Christian roots with the cmbination of Jesus and The Scriptures as a framework for all thought, science, and art, it provided a handy (and short) mechanism for me to resharpen my old philosophical edges.

It looks as though this book and others by this author remain fairly popular–hence their higher prices at Amazon. Perhaps I lucked out in getting this first American printing so cheaply. I better bronze it.

John Donnelly's Gold Don’t forget my novel John Donnelly’s Gold is now available.

Christian Rock Pioneer Larry Norman’s Songs Part 1

Christian Rock Pioneer Larry Norman’s Songs Part 1

I posted a lot in the past about my favorite Christian musicians such as Keith Green (I enjoyed reading Green’s monthly publications too), and 2nd Chapter of Acts and others. Today I wanted to talk about one of Larry Norman’s songs. David Rogers introduced me to Larry Norman’s music in the 1970’s and his album IN ANOTHER LAND came out in 1976 and sold an enormous amount of copies for a Christian record back then.

Larry Norman – The Great American Novel ~ [Lyrics]

Larry Norman – 2 – I Love You – In Another Land (1976)

Calling Larry Norman a “Christian rock pioneer” is easy, and true enough. But before becoming the personification of the Jesus Movement of the late ’60s and early ’70s, he got his start in the mainstream pop world. In 1966, he joined San Jose area band People and signed to Capitol Records. They scored a pop hit with their cover of The Zombies’ “I Love You (But the Words Won’t Come),” before disbanding over internal spiritual conflicts and Norman’s frustration with the label’s re-naming of the band’s debut album. Norman stayed with Capitol for the release of his solo debut, Upon This Rock, a wildly eclectic folk/rock record often referred to as the first Christian rock record of any consequence.

He moved to MGM Records for two critically-acclaimed albums, including Only Visiting This Planet (called “The Best Christian Album of All Time” by the editors of CCM Magazine). But sales were few, and by 1972, Norman went underground, starting Solid Rock Records in the U.S. and Europe, beginning a 35-year run of independence that brought about not only more great music of his own, but also introduced other artful, progressive artists including Randy Stonehill, Daniel Amos, Steve Scott, Tom Howard, Mark Heard, Chris Eaton (Lyrix) and others.

Unlike the safe, southern gospel influenced Christian records of the mid-’70s, Norman’s albums were richly layered in the best tradition of acts like The Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Elton John and Crosby, Stills and Nash, with a dark, apocalyptic streak. His message engaged the culture with authenticity and conviction, and his imagination articulated the disconnectedness felt by so many people in the aftermath of the ’60s.

Odd and controversial business practices and broken personal relationships would bring about the end of his Solid Rock Records imprint and cause friction between Norman and some of his closest friends. As Christian music came into its own, he sent himself into a sort of exile. He emerged occasionally, often with surprising stories of personal injuries and even conspiracies. But for the most part, he spent the last two decades of his life communicating directly with his die-hard fans and performing solo acoustic concerts around the world in small venues.

He released a few new projects and re-assembled his classics for release through his website, larrynorman.com. Occasional festival appearances were rare treats for the faithful fans, but he was so far outside the mainstream that most of today’s Christian music fans have absolutely no idea who Larry Norman is.

The fire he fanned continues to burn to this day. Much of the current faith-fueled music scene can trace its existence all the way back to this lanky San Jose kid with the quizzical face, the ripped blue jeans and the simple message that Jesus loves us. His reach extends well into the mainstream where he was admired by artists like U2, John Mellancamp, Bob Dylan and alternative/punk legend Frank Black of Pixies fame. Black, with his ’90s band The Catholics, covered Norman’s song “Six Sixty Six” and frequently went out of his way to laud his impact. In a statement issued the day after Norman’s death, Black called the singer “The most Christ-like man I ever knew.”

In 2002, when U2’s Bono visited Nashville to speak with Christian artists about his DATA campaign, the only artist he specifically asked about was Larry Norman. Norman couldn’t make that trip, so Bono visited him on the road later that year.

His flaws were many, and unfortunately, often kept him at more than arm’s length from the industry he inadvertently helped create. But in time, most of his harshest critics accepted that despite his faults, maybe because of them, he was an amazing person who had given the Church an incredible gift. One-time protégée and best friend Randy Stonehill had distanced himself from Norman for over 20 years following deep personal conflict between the two. In 2001, they reconciled, reuniting onstage at Cornerstone.

Norman struggled with heart disease for most of the last decade. On Sunday, Feb. 24, 2008 his struggle ended. He died peacefully. He was 60. It is certainly no overstatement to say Larry Norman is to Christian music what John Lennon is to rock & roll or Bob Dylan is to folk music. His contributions deserve to be discovered by future generations, and his enduring legacy includes the fantastic truth that despite his personal weakness and frailty, God used him to accomplish amazing things.

Who are the good guys: Hamas or Israel?

Zechariah 12:3 (KJV) notes, “And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people: all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces, though all the people of the earth be gathered together against it.”
It is amazing how up to date the Bible can be in many ways.
Mike Huckabee opened up his 8-2-14 Fox news show up with these words:
“You bet it is tragic that many civilians in Gaza have died, but when Palestinians pack their population around their military hardware and weaponry and then they fail to heed the leaflets, radio transmissions, dud warning bombs, phone calls and text messages, the results will be tragic. One MSNBC reporter blamed Israel for an attack on a school that turned out to be a misguided Hamas rocket.  I wonder if the Jew-haters would feel better if Israel was terrible at protecting and there were thousands of dead Jewish children?,,,,Every single agreed to cease-fire agreement pushed for by President Obama has resulted in Hamas violating it by firing more rockets right into civilian targets in Israel.”
Furthermore, Bible believers are not surprised that Israel doesn’t get along with their cousins in the Middle East because Genesis 16:12 notes concerning Israel’s neighbors “…he will live in hostility towards all his brothers.” Also we were not surprised when the Jews returned to the Holy Land after War World II because Isaiah 11:12 asserts, “And He will … gather together the dispersed of Judah from the four corners of the earth.”
Amos 9:14-15 : “And I will bring back the exiles of My people Israel, and they shall build the waste cities and inhabit them; and they shall plant vineyards and drink the wine from them; they shall also make gardens and eat the fruit of them. And I will plant them upon their land, and they shall no more be torn up out of their land which I gave them, says the Lord your God.”
I visited Israel in 1976 and our tour guide was my pastor Adrian Rogers. During the trip he asserted  that the Jews had a divine right to be in the land, but they would never have peace until Christ came back.
Rogers also made 4 other points concerning the young nation of Israel.
First, the Old Testament predicted that the Jews would regather from all over the world and form a new reborn nation of Israel.  (Isaiah 11:11-12)
Second, it was also predicted that the nation of Israel would become a stumbling block to the whole world. (Zechariah 12:3)
Third, it was predicted that the Hebrew language would be used again as the Jews’ first language even though we know in 1948 that Hebrew at that time was a dead language! (Zeph 3:9; 2 Thess 2:3-4).
Fourth, it was predicted that the Jews would never again be removed from their land.(Amos 9:14-15)
I was fascinated to read a few years later these groundbreaking words by a famous columnist who happened to be a Jew. Irving Kristol in his article, “The Political Dilemma of American Jews,” COMMENTARY MAGAZINE, 7/1/84 , wrote:

The rise of the Moral Majority is another new feature of the American landscape that baffles Jews…One of the reasons—perhaps the main reason—they do not know what to do about it is the fact that the Moral Majority is strongly pro-Israel. Some Jews, enmeshed in the liberal time warp, refuse to take this mundane fact seriously. They are wrong. Just how wrong they are can be seen by asking the question: how significant would it be for American Jews if the Moral Majority were anti-Israel? The answer is easy and inescapable: it would be of major significance. Indeed, it would generally be regarded by Jews as a very alarming matter. So it is ironic, and puzzling, that American Jews appear to be not all that interested in, and certainly not enthusiastic about, the fact that the Moral Majority is unequivocally pro-Israel… In short, is it not time for an agonizing reappraisal?

I later corresponded with Mr. Kristol and his good friend Daniel Bell and shared with them some of these same Old Testament Prophecies concerning the Jews returning to the promised land once again.

Daniel Bell responded in a letter dated September 23, 1995:

Dear Mr. Hatcher, Thank you for your thoughtful letter. I don’t know whether or not the prophecies of the Ezekiel are being fulfilled. The very nature of such prophecy, or the parables of Jesus, are inherently ambiguous, and so always opaque. As to the survival of the Jewish people, I think of the remark of Samuel Johnson that there is nothing stronger than the knowledge that one may be hanged the next day to concentrate the mind–or the will. Sincerely, Daniel Bell

On September 21, 1995 his good friend Irving Kristol added this comment, “I am leery of taking Biblical prophecies too literally. They always seem to get fulfilled, some way or other, whatever happens. They are inspiring, of course, which enough for me.”

Jesus spoke to the skeptical Jews of his day with his words from John 7 :16-17, “My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me. If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself.” In other words, if you are an honest doubter and are willing to search out the truth and live by the results then God will reveal to you that Christ is his son. However, if you are a dishonest doubter then you are just unwilling to serve God and that is the core problem. You can’t find God for the same reason a thief can’t find a policeman.

Just recently I got to visit with Irving Kristol’s son Bill in a political meeting in Hot Springs, Arkansas on July 18, 2014.  I gave him copies of letters I had received from both his father and their family friend Daniel Bell. He was amazed. He read the letters on the spot and thanked me for them. I told that Old Testament prophecies concerning Israel was the subject of the letters. Then I told him how much I respected his mother’s historical work and asked how she was doing.

The existence of the state of Israel today is powerful evidence that many Old Testament prophecies have already been fulfilled but there are many pieces of evidence from archaeology that indicates the Bible is historically accurate.  Here are some of the posts I have done in the past on the subject: 1. The Babylonian Chronicleof Nebuchadnezzars Siege of Jerusalem2. Hezekiah’s Siloam Tunnel Inscription. 3. Taylor Prism (Sennacherib Hexagonal Prism)4. Biblical Cities Attested Archaeologically. 5. The Discovery of the Hittites6.Shishak Smiting His Captives7. Moabite Stone8Black Obelisk of Shalmaneser III9A Verification of places in Gospel of John and Book of Acts., 9B Discovery of Ebla Tablets10. Three greatest American Archaeologists moved to accept Bible’s accuracy through archaeology.

The Bible and Archaeology (1/5)

The Bible maintains several characteristics that prove it is from God. One of those is the fact that the Bible is accurate in every one of its details. The field of archaeology brings to light this amazing accuracy and Kyle Butt does a great job of showing that in this film series he did on “The Bible and Archaeology.”

The Bible and Archaeology (2/5)

Adrian Rogers – How you can be certain the Bible is the word of God

Great article by Adrian Rogers.

What evidence is there that the Bible is in fact God’s Word?

I want to give you five reasons to affirm the Bible is the Word of God.

First, I believe the Bible is the Word of God because of its scientific accuracy. The Truth of the Word of God tells us that God “hangeth the earth upon nothing” (Job 26:7). How did Job know that the earth hung in space before the age of modern astronomy and space travel? The Holy Spirit told him. The scientists of Isaiah’s day didn’t know the topography of the earth, but Isaiah said, “It is [God] that sitteth upon the circle of the earth” (Isaiah 40:22). The word for “circle” here means a globe or sphere. How did Isaiah know that God say upon the circle of the earth? By divine inspiration.

Secondly, the Bible is affirmed through historical accuracy. Do you remember the story about the handwriting on the wall that is found in the fifth chapter of Daniel? Belshazzar hosted a feast with a thousand of his lords and ladies. Suddenly, a gruesome hand appeared out of nowhere and began to write on a wall. The king was disturbed and asked for someone to interpret the writing. Daniel was found and gave the interpretation. After the interpretation, “Then commanded Belshazzar, and they clothed Daniel with scarlet, and put a chain of gold about his neck, and made a proclamation concerning him, that he should be the third ruler in the kingdom.” (Daniel 5:29). Basing their opinion on Babylonian records, the historians claim this never happened. According to the records, the last king of Babylon was not Belshazzar, but a man named Nabonidas. And so, they said, the Bible is in error. There wasn’t a record of a king named Belshazzar. Well, the spades of archeologists continued to do their work. In 1853, an inscription was found on a cornerstone of a temple built by Nabonidas, to the god Ur, which read: “May I, Nabonidas, king of Babylon, not sin against thee. And may reverence for thee dwell in the heart of Belshazzar, my first-born favorite son.” From other inscriptions, it was learned that Belshazzar and Nabonidas were co-regents. Nabonidas traveled while Belshazzar stayed home to run the kingdom. Now that we know that Belshazzar and Nabonidas were co-regents, it makes sense that Belshazzar would say that Daniel would be the third ruler. What a marvelous nugget of truth tucked away in the Word of God!

Third, from Genesis to Revelation, the Bible reads as one book. And there is incredible unity to the Bible. The Bible is one book, and yet it is made up of 66 books, was written by at least 40 different authors over a period of about 1600 years, in 13 different countries and on three different continents. It was written in at least three different languages by people in all professions. The Bible forms one beautiful temple of truth that does not contradict itself theologically, morally, ethically, doctrinally, scientifically, historically, or in any other way.

Fourth, did you know the Bible is the only book in the world that has accurate prophecy? When you read the prophecies of the Bible, you simply have to stand back in awe. There are over 300 precise prophecies that deal with the Lord Jesus Christ in the Old Testament that are fulfilled in the New Testament. To say that these are fulfilled by chance is an astronomical impossibility.

Finally, the Bible is not a book of the month, but the Book of the Ages. First Peter 1:25 says: “But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the Word which by the gospel is preached unto you.” No book has ever had as much opposition as the Bible. Men have laughed at it, scorned it, burned it, ridiculed it, and made laws against it. But the Word of God has survived. And it is applicable today as much as it was yesterday and will be tomorrow.

It’s so majestically deep that scholars could swim and never touch the bottom. Yet so wonderfully shallow that a little child could come and get a drink of water without fear of drowning. That is God’s precious, holy Word. The Word of God. Know it. Believe it. It is True.

Summary:

GRACE UNPLUDGGED is about the young daughter of a former rock star who found Jesus and now must lead his wayward daughter away from bad influences and back to Christ. GRACE UNPLUDGGED keeps you on the edge of your seat and is one of the best, most entertaining, and most powerful, heartrending Christian movie ever produced.

Review:

GRACE UNPLUGGED is an extremely well produced, faith-filled, jeopardy packed movie that speaks to all the millions of parents whose children want to get into the entertainment industry.

Grace is the daughter of John Trey, a famous rock singer who crashed and found Jesus. When Grace was little, John gave her a guitar. Now, they sing together, much to her mother’s delight.

However, 18-year-old Grace is getting more and more rebellious. She wants to sing her style of music. She wants to do things her way. She wants to go into the music industry, while John only wants to sing with her in church. And, she doesn’t want to talk about it, even though John is overly protective and presses her hard to make the right choices.

Through a quirk of fate, John’s major music hit from the past gets a second chance by becoming a YouTube sensation. His former manager, Frank “Mossy” Mostin, who’s been on the rocks for many years, comes to John to say he’s got him a big record deal with Sapphire Records. So, they’re back in business.

Mossy is stunned, however, when John doesn’t want the offer. He wants to remain in a small Southern town in an out-of-the-way church. Grace, however, records herself singing her father’s song and sends it to Mossy. Mossy hires her on the spot, and she runs away from home to Hollywood.

Mossy is a conniving, music industry veteran with a Romantic worldview. He sets her up with Jason, a TV star, in order to raise her profile and rope her in tighter to the music scene. Her pop music idol tells her that her body is her biggest asset and sometimes you have to spend it. The only bright light is a young Christian intern at Sapphire Records, who has recommitted his life to Christ. He tries to serve as Grace’s conscience while pointing her back to Jesus in very subtle, wonderful ways.

John comes out to Hollywood to take Grace home. Grace finds out Jason is just using her. And, life starts to unravel in a major way. Will Grace return to Christ before she heads down the road to perdition?

GRACE UNPLUGGED is a extraordinarily well structured movie. The mother/father dialogue is real. The father/daughter dialogue is real. The Hollywood manager is a smooth talking devilish egotist, who actually makes a lot of sense. Grace is getting what she desires, but is that what she needs?

GRACE UNPLUGGED is tremendous. It isn’t just a three hankie but a whole Kleenex box movie. It keeps you on the edge of your seat. This type of clean, evangelistic movie is a departure for Lionsgate Films. They’ve done Tyler Perry movies, but GRACE UNPLUGGED goes the next step. It’s one of the best, most entertaining Christian movies ever produced. MOVIEGUIDE® only hopes they market the movie well enough that every family wants to see it. GRACE UNPLUGGED will help many families and keep them from going through the heartache of the prodigal son or daughter.

Review and Pictures and Video Clips of Woody Allen’s movie “MAGIC IN THE MOONLIGHT” Part 10

Magic In The Moonlight: Jacki Weaver Exclusive Interview

Review and Pictures and Video Clips of Woody Allen’s movie “MAGIC IN THE MOONLIGHT” Part 10

Colin Firth and Emma Stone make magic together in Woody Allen’s breezily entertaining 1920s romance.

Romance blooms under the sun and the stars in Woody Allen’s “Magic in the Moonlight,” a high-spirited bauble that goes down easy thanks to fleet comic pacing, a surfeit of ravishing Cote d’Azur vistas and the genuinely reactive chemistry of stars Colin Firth and Emma Stone. A welcome balm for the blockbuster-addled soul, Allen’s 44th feature finds the director back in the 1920s Gallic mood of 2011’s “Midnight in Paris,” with the star-crossed lovers this time held apart not by time but rather by philosophical inclinations. While the result may not quite equal “Midnight’”s box office bonanza, expect “Magic” to handily corner the upscale adult demo for the remainder of summer, continuing the Woodman’s late-career hot streak.

A childhood magic buff and amateur magician, Allen has incorporated hypnotists, stage illusionists and touches of the supernatural into many films including “Alice,” “The Curse of the Jade Scorpion” and “Scoop,” the last of which Allen himself has aptly referred to as “a trivial little Kleenex of a film.” By that measure, Allen’s latest is more of a monogrammed silk handkerchief, with Firth smoothly stepping into the role of Stanley Crawford, a celebrated London prestidigitator who performs in yellowface under the stage name Wei Ling-soo and maintains a healthy sideline in debunking sham mystics of all sorts, “from the seance table to the Vatican and beyond.”

A nod to the 19th-century American magician William Ellsworth Robinson (who performed as the Chinese Chung Ling-soo), it’s a tailor-made part for Firth’s dyspeptic charisma, and reps one of the few times Allen has successfully cast an onscreen surrogate who doesn’t slavishly mimic his own line readings and mannerisms. (Firth is closer here to the Rex Harrison of “My Fair Lady,” a likeness Allen acknowledges in an homage to that film’s famous final shot.)

The movie opens in 1928, with Stanley being approached backstage by friend and fellow illusionist Howard (Simon McBurney), who makes him an offer he can’t refuse. In the south of France, a wealthy Pittsburgh industrial family has fallen under the spell of a certain Sophie Baker (Stone), a young American woman passing herself off as a clairvoyant. Son Brice (Hamish Linklater) is so smitten he’s all but signed the marriage contract, while Howard — despite his best efforts — has been unable to unmask the interloper as a fraud. So into the breach Stanley goes, presenting himself as a businessman named Taplinger, only to find himself quickly seduced — less by Sophie’s “psychic vibrations” than by her moony, freckle-faced charms.

He’s not the only one: Allen and his “Midnight” d.p. Darius Khondji have lit Stone so radiantly that she seems almost translucent, the way Scarlett Johansson appeared in the early scenes of “Match Point.” But it’s Stone’s wonderful comic presence that shines brightest. Casting her hands before her as she communes with the spirit world and sounding astonished by the most mundane of revelations, her Sophie is the sort of slightly aloof dingbat original Shelley Duvall or Julie Hagerty used to play, and the trick of Stone’s performance is that we, like Stanley, can’t quite sort out whether she’s a phony or the real deal — at least for a while.

In truth, Allen doesn’t seem terribly concerned about maintaining a convincing air of mystery here, and even the least attentive of viewers may find themselves one or two steps ahead of Stanley’s sleuthing. What interests Allen more is the ideological tug of war that erupts in Firth’s erstwhile man of reason, whom one character describes as “a perfect depressive with everything sublimated into his art.” Maybe, just maybe, “Magic in the Moonlight” suggests, a little self-delusion is necessary in order to make life bearable. And while no one would ever mistake Allen for a believer, “Magic” is surely the first of his movies to feature a long (and mostly sincere) scene in which a character contemplates the power of prayer.

Whenever Firth and Stone are onscreen together, the movie sings; the rest of the time it’s never less than a breezy divertissement. As usual, Allen has filled out the cast with a who’s-who of gifted character actors, some of whom have actual roles, while others seem like onlookers at a garden party. The sly Eileen Atkins fares best as Stanley’s crafty aunt in Provence, while Marcia Gay Harden gets a few choice bits as Sophie’s bullish stage mother. Improbably cast as a Pennsylvania matriarch for the second time in as many years (after “Silver Linings Playbook”), ’70s Aussie screen icon Jacki Weaver rounds out the ensemble as Linklater’s equally bewitched mom.

France does seem to bring out the best in Allen, who, working with much of his “Midnight” crew, has delivered one of his most beautifully made films. Lensing in widescreen 35mm, Allen and Khondji favor elegantly choreographed traveling master shots bathed in natural light (shooting took place up and down the Riviera, including Cap d’Antibes, Mouans-Sartoux, Juan-les-Pins and Nice), while production designer Anne Seibel fosters an effortless period air and costume designer Sonia Grande dresses Stone in a parade of white lace, floral hats and one especially va-va-voom red-and-white sailor’s outfit.

The typically rich sourced soundtrack here includes snatches of Stravinsky, Ravel and Beethoven alongside the usual American songbook standards (Cole Porter, Rodgers & Hart, et al.). Lauded German cabaret singer Ute Lemper appears briefly as a period version of herself, crooning Mischa Spoliansky and Marcellus Schiffer’s “It’s All a Swindle,” which could easily have served as an alternate title for Allen’s film.
