I was shocked to learn that both Arkansas and Tennessee pay their football coaches top 4 salaries!!!

I was shocked to learn that both Arkansas and Tennessee pay their football coaches top 4 salaries!!!Everybody knows that when Texas and Alabama won the national titles they raised their coaches up to the highest paid football coaches in the nation and who could blame them? Also you can not blame Oklahoma, Ohio State, and LSU for paying a huge amount of money to coaches that have won national titles. However, Tennessee and Arkansas are paying an enormous amount of money to coaches that have not won national titles. I personally like Coach Bielema and think he will do a great job at Arkansas and I am glad we took what it takes to get him. We will just have to wait and see how things will turn out.

I wrote of series of four posts on the conversion to Christ of Brian Walsh of the heavy metal band Korn and that was because my son Hunter told me about Walsh’s Christian testimony. Then I stumbled on the Christian testimony of Reggie “Fieldy” Arvizu of Korn. This subject has always interested me and I have written about Lou Graham of Foreigner, and Kerry Livgren and Dave Hope and their similar experiences. In all of these cases they convert to Christianity and give their lives totally to Christ and then they are delivered from drugs.

Reginald Quincy “Fieldy” Arvizu (born November 2, 1969 in Los Angeles County, California)^[1] is the bassist for the nu metal band Korn, and guitarist for the hard rock band StillWell.

Musical career

Prior to Arvizu’s time in Korn, he and Brian Welch, who would later become one of Korn’s two guitarists (alongside James Shaffer), had played together in a number of bands, having become friends while still at school. Upon their graduation from high school, Arvizu, Welch, Shaffer, and drummer David Silveria relocated from Bakersfield to Los Angeles and Arvizu, Shaffer, and Silveria formed L.A.P.D (the name first stood for “Love and Peace, Dude”, but this abbreviation was later changed to “Laughing As People Die”). Although L.A.P.D. did succeed in signing a record deal, their success was limited until the band hired singer Jonathan Davis and changed their name to Korn.

The name “Fieldy” is said to have come about as an inside joke. Originally, his band mates called him “Gopher”, due to his large cheeks. Gopher quickly became “Gar”, Gar became “Garfield” (based on the comic strip character of the same name), and eventually “Gar” was dropped and a “y” was added to “Field”, which became Fieldy.^[2] His full moniker is “Fieldy Snuts”, which when spoken aloud sounds like “feel these nuts”.

He plays a five-string Ibanez model SDGR SR1305, named the K-5, which is his signature bass.

His playing style consists of slapping, standard finger-style plucking, and left-hand muting; his standard tuning is: A, D, G, C, F. He states Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers as being one of the main influences towards his playing style. He has also stated to have been influenced by Billy Gould from Faith No More.

Fieldy is also one of the main songwriters in Korn. The majority of his bass riffs are hip-hop inspired. He says he gets inspiration from anything hip-hop. On the business side of Korn, Fieldy is responsible for all Korn merchandise, its buying and selling. He will come up with a number of designs, shows them to the band and they either approve or disapprove.^{[citation needed]}

In August 2012 it was reported that Fieldy would be taking a brief break from Korn as his wife Dena was expecting a child. Korn began touring through Eastern Europe, Russia and India throughout August and September 2012 with fill in Bassist Ryan Martinie from Mudvayne.

Life outside Korn

In addition to Korn, he has a rap side project called Fieldy’s Dreams. Fieldy’s Dreams has released one album titled Rock’n Roll Gangster.

Fieldy married girlfriend Dena Beber on Tuesday, 16 May 2006. Korn’s guitarist, Munky played nylon guitar at the wedding. It is her first marriage and his third. Fieldy has two daughters, Sarina and Olivia Arvizu, from his second marriage from Shela Arvizu; he and his current wife Dena had a son in early 2007 and named him Israel. Following the death of his father, Fieldy became a born-again Christian.^[3]^[4]^[5]

Fieldy has stated that his second album, Bassically, is still in the works. Originally intended to be a hardcore rap album, Fieldy has scrapped the original idea in favor of a jazz fusion style.^{[citation needed]}

Fieldy is currently working with independent rap artist Q-Unique on a side project called StillWell. The song “Killing Myself To Live” can be heard on their MySpace page. Stillwell’s debut album, Dirtbag, is set to be released on May 10, 2011.

Fieldy was also working on his own clothing line Immanuel one twenty three; when asked about it while backstage at the West Palm Beach stop of the Mayhem Festival in 2010, he stated that it was “much harder than he had previously expected” to start a clothing line, and has moved on to the side project that he can “be more proud of, opposed to his first solo CD under Fieldy’s Dreams titled Rock’n Roll Gangster”

Got The Life: My Journey of Addiction, Faith, Recovery and Korn is a memoir Fieldy penned, which hit shelves March 10, 2009. His autobiography tells the story of how he found God, quit drugs, and found the better part of himself.^[6]

Fieldy has a tattoo that was done by Limp Bizkit frontman Fred Durst while he still worked in a tattoo parlour.

Eric Blair of “The Blairing Out With Eric Blair Show“ recently conducted an interview with KORN bassist Reginald “Fieldy” Arvizu at this year’s NAMM (National Association Of Music Merchants) show, which was held January 14-17, 2010 at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California. Watch the chat below.

KORN will top the bill on this summer’s Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival tour, which is scheduled to kick off on July 10 in San Bernardino, California.

The Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival will be the first major city tour for KORN in support of the band’s ninth studio album, tentatively titled “Korn III – Remember Who You Are”. The new album marks the return of producer Ross Robinson, who worked with KORN on their first two releases, “Korn” and “Life is Peachy”. Lead vocalist Jonathan Davis has said that the new material matches the pure raw emotion of KORN‘s early releases while the current touring band has never been tighter.

“We experimented with a lot of cool stuff on our last two records [2005’s ‘See You On The Other Side’ and 2007’s untitled effort], but we didn’t want to do another record like that,” Davis explained to Revolver magazine. “So we said, ‘Let’s strip it back again. Let’s do this as a four-piece and make it real raw like the old stuff.”

KORN‘s forthcoming effort was tracked last October at the band’s studio. “We recorded everything on tape, just like we did in the old days,” said Davis. “And we didn’t stack four or five vocal parts like I usually do. I’m singing one part for every song, which was scary. It’s just me and the microphone, and you can really hear the emotion.”

The House and Senate are considering farm bill legislation this week whose costs should raise red flags for all Americans. In fact, the House and Senate versions of the bill would cost far more than the Obama stimulus package.

The costs are just one example of how the farm bill ignores taxpayers, consumers, and virtually all Americans.

First of all, the “farm bill” is a misleading title. It’s more appropriately called the food stamp bill, since nearly 80 percent of the costs are connected to food stamps. By combining agriculture programs with food stamps, legislators have turned the food stamp bill into a political game where, every five years, Congress rubberstamps legislation that helps special interests at the expense of most Americans.

It’s well past time that the politics is taken out of the food stamp bill. There should be a separate food stamp bill and a separate agriculture-only farm bill. The legislation that the House and Senate are considering this week should concern all Americans. Massive new subsidies are added, and old subsidies are maintained or made even worse. The effect will be high costs to taxpayers and higher food prices for consumers.

Further, the government’s interference into farming and ranching practices will undermine the freedom that farmers should have when making critical agriculture decisions.

“The Tyranny of Control” in Milton Friedman’s FREE TO CHOOSE Part 2 of 7 (Transcript and Video) “As always, economic freedom promotes human freedom”

In this episode “The Tyranny of Controls” Milton Friedman shows how government planning and detailed control of economic activity lessens productive innovation and consumer choice.

In this episode Milton Friedman asserted, “Central planning, in practice, has condemned India’s masses to poverty and misery. We know what has happened in Japan. Free trade set off a process that revolutionized Japan and the lives of its people. Improvements in material well-being went hand in hand with the elimination of the rigid social structure of a century ago. It’s no accident. As always, economic freedom promotes human freedom.”

Milton Friedman’s Free to Choose – Ep.2 (2/7) – The Tyranny of Control

But it is more than just a symbol of honoring the past. It typifies the policy that they are actually following.

The new government in 1948 decided that India’s traditional weaving industry and its workers should be protected from 20th century industrialization. What were the consequences of that policy? This is India today, 30 years after winning independence. These are scenes of a very typical Indian community __ one of thousands. It is called “Anicaputar” and it is about 1,000 miles south of the capital, New Delhi. This is not the kind of life the government intended to perpetuate. But it is one result of their policy. By subsidizing the cotton that the villagers spin and the cloth that they weave, they made it difficult for modern industry to develop.

This is sizing. It’s an essential technique in cloth production where the yarn is smoothed clean. A modern machine could do the same thing in a hundredth of the time. The result of government planning to modernize industry is that the number of hand looms roughly doubled in the first thirty years after India’s independence. Today, in thousands of villages throughout India, the sound of hand looms can be heard from early in the morning until late at night. In this village alone, there are more than 3,000 hand looms in operation.

Since 1948, three generations of villagers have sat at these looms making cloth with patterns that never vary, using methods that never change. There is nothing wrong with this activity, provided it survives the test of the market, provided it is the way in which these people can use their abilities and their energies most effectively. After all, in Japan, where the government has not specially encouraged the hand loom industry, there remains a very small, but very productive hand loom segment. The trouble here is that this industry exists only because the government has subsidized and supported it because it has in effect imposed taxes, direct and indirect, on the rest of the people of India, people who are no better off than these people are in order to enable this activity to continue.

Other industries, both textile industries and industries of a variety of kinds, have been restricted, explicitly kept back, prevented from providing more productive employment in order to make room for this industry. The effect has been to inhibit the development, to prevent the growth, to prevent the dynamic activity that could otherwise develop out of the energies and the abilities to the people of India. This looks like a factory, but it is also home for the people who work here. When they are not sitting at their looms, they eat and sleep in a corner of this hut.

Throughout the world, governments always profess to be forward-looking. In practice, they are always backward-looking. Either protecting the industries that exist, or making sure that whatever ventures they have decided to undertake, are encouraged and developed. This occurs at the expense of the kind of healthy development of new, dynamic, adapted industries that would surely occur if the market were allowed to operate freely. If it were allowed to separate out the unsuccessful ventures from the successful ones. Discouraging the unsuccessful and encouraging the successful.

India has tremendous economic and human potential, every bit as much as Japan had a century ago. The human tragedy is that in India, that potential has been stifled by the straightjacket imposed by an all-wise and paternalistic government.

Central planning, in practice, has condemned India’s masses to poverty and misery. We know what has happened in Japan. Free trade set off a process that revolutionized Japan and the lives of its people. Improvements in material wellbeing went hand in hand with the elimination of the rigid social structure of a century ago. It’s no accident. As always, economic freedom promotes human freedom.

And in the meantime, what has happened to the Japanese weaving industry? This is how textiles start life in a Japanese weaving shed today. A design for cloth is placed on a drum. As it revolves, it is scanned by an electric eye. Each color, each variation in the pattern and texture is transmitted faithfully to a computer. It’s all that the modern loom of Japan requires. This loom is fitted with electronics that make it one of the most sophisticated of its sort in the world. The fabric that it produces is the best silk of its kind.

Thanks to the speed and efficiency of these machines, the price of the silk is competitive. The workers are highly skilled and well paid. With the new technology, there is very little __ a loom like this cannot produce. This piece will become the sash of a traditional bridal gown. These are machine-made products. But by any standards, they are beautiful. They can stand comparison with the very finest work of the hand loom. And it’s not merely the end product itself that is remarkable. The sophisticated technology which was developed to make all of this possible, has been adapted to other processes. Part of the self-generating development under free enterprise, and it all stems from an ancient, traditional industry __ weaving __ that imported a new method for controlling its looms when Japan turned to free trade more than a century ago.

Yet, believe it or not, many still maintain today that markets cannot be left to operate freely. That they must be controlled by government. This dockside is in Scotland, a British government, a socialist government decided that its role was to protect the workers here from competition. So down there in governed shipyards, they are building these vessels for the Polish government. To get the order, the British government is using the money of British taxpayers to subsidize the work. In other words, British people are making these ships in order to sell them at a loss to the Poles. Not only the Poles, but we also in America benefit from this kind of philanthropy.

The steel industry in the United States makes a fine profit. Other countries do too. And their steel is often cheaper, sometimes because their taxpayers subsidize it. So, why shouldn’t the American consumer buy steel wherever he can get it cheapest __ at home or abroad. The American steel industry works very hard trying to persuade us that it’s not in our self-interest to buy in the cheapest market. They urge the government to restrict what they call unfair competition, though, of course, they recognize that there are dangers in this.

Dear Senator Pryor, here are some spending cut suggestions (“Thirsty Thursday”, Open letter to Senator Pryor)

Why do I keep writing and email Senator Pryor suggestions on how to cut our budget? I gave him hundreds of ideas about how to cut spending and as far as I can tell he has taken none of my suggestions. You can find some of my suggestions here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, and here, and they all were emailed to him. In fact, I have written 13 posts pointing out reasons why I believe Senator Pryor’s re-election attempt will be unsuccessful. HERE I GO AGAIN WITH ANOTHER EMAIL I JUST SENT TO SENATOR PRYOR!!!

Dear Senator Pryor,

Why not pass the Balanced Budget amendment? As you know that federal deficit is at all time high (1.6 trillion deficit with revenues of 2.2 trillion and spending at 3.8 trillion).

On my blog www.thedailyhatch.org . I took you at your word and sent you over 100 emails with specific spending cut ideas. (Actually there were over 160 emails with specific spending cut suggestions.) However, I did not see any of them in the recent debt deal that Congress adopted although you did respond to me several times. Now I am trying another approach. Every week from now on I will send you an email explaining different reasons why we need the Balanced Budget Amendment or I send you specific spending cut suggestions. It will appear on my blog on “Thirsty Thursday” because the government is always thirsty for more money to spend.

IF YOU TRULY WANT TO CUT THE BUDGET AND BALANCE THE BUDGET THEN SUBMIT THESE POTENTIAL BUDGET CUTS PRESENTED BELOW!!

What Can We Cut to Balance the Budget

If the U.S. government cut all government services except Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and payments on the debt, federal spending would still outpace revenues. Prof. Antony Davies argues that there are not specific cuts that will enable government to balance the budget. He says, “Nothing less than a redesign will solve this problem.” That redesign should begin by determining what the proper role of government is.

Wasteful Programs that Make You Want To Pull Your Hair Out

This week we finally reached Tax Freedom Day – the day after which American workers begin to make money for themselves and their families instead of the government. While no one begrudges making a reasonable contribution for necessary services, how many of us are confident that our wages earned over the past 108 days are being spent carefully and wisely by the federal government in Washington, D.C?

So while we all listen to politicians and government employee unions still bemoaning the modest cuts imposed by the Sequester, let’s scroll through the Government Accountability Office’s (GAO) annual report highlighting just some of the waste and redundant programs still funded by our tax dollars.

Wasteful Spending Program #1: $14 million on Catfish Inspections

“Government doesn’t have a spending problem.”- President Obama, Jan. 2013

Not only does government have a spending problem, but with a budget shortfall estimated at $845 billion this year, we have a massive wasteful spending problem. Take for instance Catfish Inspections. The GAO reports that we could easily save $14 million annually by consolidating the overlapping inspection processes on Catfish.

The actual cost of our absolutely critical Catfish inspections are more than $100 million every year, but due to a system riddled with inefficiencies we’re throwing money down the stream. The United States Department of Agriculture, under a provision of the 2008 Farm Bill, has the power to inspect and create inspection programs for meat, poultry, and seafood. One inspection process, Catfish, has grown into three separate taxpayer-funded agencies each with overlapping research and responsibilities.

Wasteful Spending Program #2: $4 Billion by not buying in bulk

Ask any big American family how they save money on groceries and household supplies, and they’ll probably pull out a Costco card. We understand that buying in bulk will reduce costs, but sadly our Federal Government doesn’t understand that basic tip for saving tax dollars. Instead each department or agency buys many of the same goods independently, dramatically reducing our national purchasing power and wastefully spending your tax dollars. The GAO reports that, “By simply buying together the critical agencies like the Departments of Defense, Homeland Security, Energy, and Veterans Affairs could save over $4 billion a year.”

Wasteful Spending Program #3: $82 million spent on 7 different camouflage uniforms

“It’s almost a false argument to say that we have a spending problem.” – House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi

In 2002 the military began a change from two camouflage patterns to the seven service-specific camouflage uniforms, all with different colors and patterns which we have today. The camouflage uniforms look incredibly similar, yet because each branch of the military is developing its own uniforms they are spending nearly $82 million in the design, creation and acquisition of the different uniforms. Instead of the military branches working together, they are all moving separately. The GAO report found that consolidating the uniforms would be more efficient, better protect service members and save millions. During the sequester debate, we made it clear that providing for national defense was a legitimate and vital function of the US Government, but maintained that even the military could trim spending by finding and eliminating inefficiencies. The $82 million in overspending here seems like a great place to start.

Implementing just these three simple changes above would save $5 billion the very first year. With the hundreds of other reforms suggested by the GAO report there would be an annual savings of roughly $250 billion. As Senator Coburn said, “That’s three times what the sequester was. Just in waste, in duplication, in stupidity, and lack of efficiency and effectiveness by the federal government. (It) makes you want to pull your hair out.”

Well said Senator Coburn…well said.

The Balanced Budget Amendment is the only thing I can think of that would force Washington to cut spending. We have only a handful of balanced budgets in the last 60 years, so obviously what we are doing is not working. We are passing along this debt to the next generation. YOUR APPROACH HAS BEEN TO REJECT THE BALANCED BUDGET “BECAUSE WE SHOULD CUT THE BUDGET OURSELF,” WELL THEN HERE IS YOUR CHANCE!!!! SUBMIT THESE CUTS!!!!

Michael Cannon calls “private option” crony capitalism

As we previewed last week, Michael Cannon — health-care point man for libertarian think tank the Cato Institute — was invited to testify today before the Senate Insurance committee. Cannon is a diehard opponent of the Affordable Care Act, and there were hints on American For Prosperity (AFP)’s website that Cannon might raise objections to the “private option.” Instead, his testimony today was exclusively focused on the decision about whether the state should run its own exchange or opt out and let the feds run the exchange (currently, Arkansas has a state-federal partnership). However, Cannon told reporters afterward that the “private option” was even worse in his view than Medicaid expansion, labeling it “crony capitalism.”

Cannon has a number of arguments against state-run exchanges. The flashiest one is that he is hoping that a legal challenge to the operation of federally run exchanges has the potential to dismantle the entire law. We’ve covered his lawsuit before and won’t get in to the weeds here but you can read about the legal challenge here, and read Cannon’s legal argument in full here.

Sen. Joyce Elliot asked Cannon, “Is your position overall that you want to stop the healthcare law or are you just giving us advice on how to proceed with exchange?”

Cannon’s response: “Both.”

I asked Cannon afterwards why he hadn’t touched on the “private option” for expansion. “This was a hearing on exchanges, I was invited to speak about exchanges,” he said. “I’ll be speaking to some legislators later and I’m sure the Medicaid expansion will come up.”

The “private option” issue is in fact relevant to the exchange question in various ways, the largest being the $20-million-per-year revenue stream from a 2.5 percent state fee on insurances sold on the exchange. Cannon said that he knew of no legal restriction on states imposing the fee even if they opted out of running the exchange, though this seems politically implausible.

In any case, as policy, Cannon thinks the “private option” framework stinks. He already thinks that Medicaid expansion is too expensive and he argued that the “private option” would be even costlier. (I should say that Cannon prefers “Beebe proposal” to “private option.” Pretty surprised he didn’t call it BeebeCare!)

Cannon relied on the CBO numbers we’ve heard, which likely are not applicable to Arkansas. Cannon had not yet seen the DHS study released yesterday but expressed deep skepticism about their findings.

Okay, but who cares what someone from the Cato Institute thinks about what Arkansas should do? I would argue that Cannon’s position may represent one pole of a possible split within the Arkansas GOP on the “private option” between establishment Republicans and the anti-Obamacare base. As I heard one Tea Party member in attendance at the meeting say of the new framework, “if you put lipstick on a pig, it’s still a pig.”

Here’s Cannon:

It’s odd that this is considered a compromise proposal. We’ll compromise by making an unaffordable entitlement program even more unaffordable. It’s also interesting because Congress considered this…amendments were offered and voted down by Democrats who said no we can’t put the Medicaid expansion population in the exchanges because it would be too expensive. So you have to ask the question, if Congress rejected this idea, what on earth are Gov. Beebe and Sec. Sebelius doing talking about an idea that would increase federal and state spending that Congress expressly rejected?

I gotta hand it to Gov. Beebe and Kathleen Sebelius, they know that there’s this crony capitalism streak among Republicans. If you say, we’re going to increase government spending, they say ‘no that’s bad.’ But if you say ‘we’re going to give the subsidies to private industry,’ they say, ‘hey, I like private industry, that’s good.’ So they’re really playing to that crony capitalist streak in order to get Republicans to implement Obamacare.

They’re drawn to the idea because Republicans hear private coverage and think that’s better than public coverage but really what matters is who’s paying the piper. If it’s government money that you’re spending, it’s going to be government insurance even if you hang the word ‘private’ on it.

Though I support expansion, I think Cannon’s arguments about the “private option” make sense: if you don’t like Obamacare, it follows that you wouldn’t like an alternative that’s likely to cost at least a little more, particularly if that additional spending seems to be in defiance of Congressional intent. Will we hear more arguments along these lines from Republican lawmakers? We’ll see.

Thus far outside conservative groups haven’t made too much noise about the “private option” but I suspect that will change. While Cannon spoke with reporters, an AFP official was standing next to him. I asked her — as I’ve asked Teresa Crossland-Oelke, AFP’s Arkansas state director — whether AFP has a position on the “private option.” They’ve been cagey so far. Republican lawmakers working on the “private option” have told me that their focus is on the policy but have acknowledged that it will be politically important if AFP decides to speak out one way or the other.

In addition to his testimony today, Cannon was also AFP’s guest speaker at the Conservative Caucus Luncheon at the Capitol. Based on tweets from the event, it sounds like Cannon offered the same strong message against the “private option.”

Not only did it pave the way for Obamacare, but it’s also a good indicator of the awful, statist, big-government policies he would impose on all of us if he ever entered the White House.

Korn guitarist, former drug addict and reformed Christian Brian “Head” Welch stepped out onto Bullock Creek Auditorium’s stage last night to tell his story after a fitting introduction — that we are all “children of God,” whether we’re black, white, straight, gay, dressed in leather or tattooed.

Fitting, because Welch looked just like a man you’d never want to cross. Dreadlocks hung down to his waist, tattoos crawled up his arms. His iPhone — from which he opened with a Psalm — was linked by a long, thin silver chain to his black pants.

His honesty, though, was instantly disarming. Pacing back and forth, Welch told his life’s story in quick, almost nervous words, speaking with the humor and charisma of a man without pretense. He told listeners early that you can tell when someone’s faking it, and promised to be as genuine with them as he could.

Welch was in Midland to talk about his tumultuous past and journey to Christianity via metal music and drugs. Brought to Midland by the STEP UP organization and numerous area churches, he spent the afternoon visiting recovering substance abusers in the Ten Sixteen Recovery Network in Midland before Wednesday evening’s talk.

He rewound back to age 10, when he discovered the guitar as a young boy living in Bakersfield, Calif. As his life went on, it never really involved Christianity — church “felt like a funeral,” and even though he had a friend and an adult in his life both work to get him interested, nothing permanently stuck.

As he grew older — into his late teens and early 20s — he stayed outside of faith. “Music, my friends, and having a good time — that’s all I knew,” he said, noting his experiences with alcohol and marijuana: “That’s what life is like without God, and I lived that way for years.”

Welch moved to Hollywood around age 20 to follow friends who were already pursuing music there. It wasn’t a quick road to the top, though — Welch worked as their roadie, paying the rent by working for Pizza Hut and as a furniture mover.

After a move back to Bakersfield, when he was about to give up on a life in music, his friends invited him to join their band. From those beginnings, Korn was born, and within a year, they’d landed a record deal.

That’s where things started to take a marked turn, both for the better and for the worse. While Welch was touring with Korn, he started using speed.

“When you get that big, every coke dealer wants to come out and give you their stuff,” he said, from girls to drugs. Over the years, Welch slipped deeper and deeper into his addiction, trying numerous drugs, including Vicodin and Xanax.

He had a few short recoveries. The first came after his marriage and the birth of his daughter, lasting four months, until Korn’s bassist asked him at a concert, “you’re not going to watch Rage (Against the Machine) sober, are you? Have fun with that.”

“A first taste like honey, you were so yum/Can’t wait for a second, cause it’s so fun,” is a line from the song “You Ain’t Seen Nothin’ Yet,” off Avril Lavigne’s self-titled fifth studio album. It’s a line that’s cutesy and cloying, but look, if you can, beyond it, and soak in the beautifully crafted pop song that houses it. From “Sk8er Boi” to “Girlfriend” to the underrated “What The Hell,” Lavigne has always released pop music that defies dissection, ruffling the feathers of scholars with cries of “Hey, hey! You, you! I don’t like your girlfriend,” and disregarding high art for a meaty chorus. The thing is, Lavigne has always been highly skilled at this practice — ever since she began spitting the polysyllabic pile-up of the “Complicated” chorus, Lavigne has stayed in her lane, cranked out an album’s worth of enjoyable pop-rock every three years or so, and kept her image and integrity intact. For someone who often focuses on the irresponsibilities of youth, Lavigne has proven herself as one of mainstream music’s most reliable personalities; her commitment to bestowing us with impudent anthems is almost workmanlike.

There are new faces on “Avril Lavigne” — notably her husband, Nickelback’s Chad Kroeger, who co-wrote most of the album and sings with Lavigne on “Let Me Go.” There is a new label, Epic Records, which reunites Lavigne with Antonio “L.A.” Reid, who helped bring her music to the masses. But for the most part, Lavigne’s fifth full-length encapsulates everything worth loving about the 29-year-old’s long-running artistry. There are zero attempts at growing up, but instead there is “Here’s To Never Growing Up,” the album’s marvelous lead single, as well as a kick in the groin called “Bad Girl,” featuring Marilyn Manson; “Bitchin’ Summer,” about how awesome the summer is going to be; and “Falling Fast,” a love song that could soundtrack a flurry of proms come springtime. In spite of the subject matter, the songwriting has never been sharper, and unlike 2011’s “Goodbye Lullaby,” which featured moments in which Lavigne sounded unsure of herself, the singer is fully in control here. When she concludes that line from “You Ain’t Seen Nothin’ Yet” with “Third base, I’m headed for a home run/Don’t stop baby, don’t stop baby now,” she tries to sell her words with the most charming of poses. Needless to say, she succeeds.

7. Bad Girl feat. Marilyn Manson – The high-profile collaboration with Marilyn Manson is salacious, sloppy, muddied rock music — as it damn well should be. As Lavigne writhes in the spotlight, Manson shrieks his encouragement, and the rubber-necking audience is treated to a spitballing session that turned into glorious chaos.

8. Hello Kitty – As compelling of a car-crash “Bad Girl” was, “Hello Kitty” has the opposite effect: it’s a bold stab at a genre outside of Lavigne’s oeuvre (here, dark-edged techno-pop), but it never comes together. By the 20th time “Hello Kitty, you’re so pretty” is declared, the listener’s attention is already on the next track.

9. You Ain’t Seen Nothin’ Yet – Lavigne travels back to her well-worn pop-rock path and spins a tale of quickly forged romance that could have easily fit in on “The Best Damn Thing.” “You Ain’t Seen Nothin’ Yet” is not quite as solid as “Avril Lavigne’s” uptempo singles, but it’s almost there, and the unabashedly joyful bridge is worth a listen on its own.

10. Sippin’ on Sunshine – The first song on the album to shove the bass to the forefront, “Sippin’ on Sunshine” is a light, surprisingly funky hoedown that translates the echoing chorus of “Here’s To Never Growing Up” to a lyrics sheet that could play well on adult contemporary radio.

11. Hello Heartache – “I was champagne/You were Jameson,” Lavigne laments on this straightforward breakup track. The ghouls crowing “la-la-la” in the background amplify Lavigne’s pain, and although the sentiment at the heart of “Hello Heartache” is a simple one, it’s no less impactful.

12. Falling Fast – There are moments on “Avril Lavigne” that the singer seems primed for a country-pop makeover, and “Falling Fast” is the clearest, and best, example of Lavigne’s subtle shift toward Nashville’s biggest genre. The song’s breathy delivery, hushed rock elements and crystallized melody would all be at home on a Taylor Swift album.

13. Hush Hush – The great thing about the songwriting on “Avril Lavigne” is that it always conveys a deeper meaning without overreaching or busting out the thesaurus. The piano-driven “Hush Hush” emits a rush of feelings — regret, anger, desperation, nakedness, and finally, faint hopefulness — and unpacks them tidily while presenting Lavigne as a pop artist one can still trust to handle the job.

The Bethinking National Apologetics Day Conference: “Countering the New Atheism” took place during the UK Reasonable Faith Tour in October 2011. Christian academics William Lane Craig, John Lennox, Peter J Williams and Gary Habermas lead 600 people in training on how to defend and proclaim the credibility of Christianity against the growing tide of secularism and New Atheist popular thought in western society.

In this session, William Lane Craig delivers his critique of Richard Dawkins’ objections to arguments for the existence of God, followed by questions and answers from the audience. In this clip, Dr Craig addresses a question about objective moral values and distinguishes them from absolute moral values.

Life without God in the picture is absurdity!!!. That was the view of King Solomon when he wrote the Book of Ecclesiastes 3000 years ago and it is the view of many of the modern philosophers today. Modern man has tried to come up with a lasting meaning for life without God in the picture (life under the sun), but it is not possible. Without the infinite-personal God of the Bible to reveal moral absolutes then man is left to embrace moral relativism. In a time plus chance universe man is reduced to a machine and can not find a place for values such as love. Both of Francis Schaeffer’s film series have tackled these subjects and he shows how this is reflected in the arts.

In the film series “WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE HUMAN RACE?” the arguments are presented against abortion (Episode 1), infanticide (Episode 2), euthenasia (Episode 3), and then there is a discussion of the Christian versus Humanist worldview concerning the issue of “the basis for human dignity” in Episode 4 and then in the last episode a close look at the truth claims of the Bible.

I have discussed many subjects with my liberal friends over at the Ark Times Blog in the past and I have taken them on now on the subject of the absurdity of life without God in the picture. Most of my responses included quotes from William Lane Craig’s book THE ABSURDITY OF LIFE WITHOUT GOD. Here is the result of one of those encounters from June of 2013:

When modern philosophers look at the human condition without God in the picture they see a picture of anything but satisfaction. Francis Schaeffer as you know, Outlier, is my favorite Christian philosopher and his work HOW SHOULD WE THEN LIVE? does a great job of showing this exact thing.

According to Schaeffer, How Should We Then Live traces Western history from Ancient Rome until the time of writing (1976) along three lines: the philosophic, scientific, and religious.[3] He also makes extensive references to art and architecture as a means of showing how these movements reflected changing patterns of thought through time. Schaeffer’s central premise is: when we base society on the Bible, on the infinite-personal God who is there and has spoken,[4] this provides an absolute by which we can conduct our lives and by which we can judge society. This leads to what Schaeffer calls “Freedom without chaos.”[5] When we base society on humanism, which he defines as “a value system rooted in the belief that man is his own measure, that man is autonomous, totally independent”,[6] all values are relative and we have no way to distinguish right from wrong except for utilitarianism.[7] Because we disagree on what is best for which group, this leads to fragmentation of thought,[8] which has led us to the despair and alienation so prevalent in society today.[9]

One of the apologetic questions that contemporary Christian theology must treat in its doctrine of man is what has been called “the human predicament,” that is to say, the significance of human life in a post-theistic universe. Logically, this question ought, it seems to me, to be raised prior to and as a prelude to the question of God’s existence.

The apologetic for Christianity based on the human predicament is an extremely recent phenomenon, associated primarily with Francis Schaeffer. Often it is referred to as “cultural apologetics” because of its analysis of post-Christian culture. This approach constitutes an entirely different sort of apologetics than the traditional models, since it is not concerned with epistemological issues of justification and warrant. Indeed, in a sense it does not even attempt to show in any positive sense that Christianity is true; it simply explores the disastrous consequences for human existence, society, and culture if Christianity should be false. In this respect, this approach is somewhat akin to existentialism: the precursors of this approach were also precursors of existentialism, and much of its analysis of the human predicament is drawn from the insights of twentieth-century atheistic existentialism.

As I remarked earlier, FRANCIS SCHAEFFER (1912–1984) is the thinker most responsible for crafting a Christian apologetic based on the so-called modern predicament. According to Schaeffer, there can be traced in recent Western culture a “line of despair,” which penetrates philosophy, literature, and the arts in succession. He believes the root of the problem lies in Hegelian philosophy, specifically in its denial of absolute truths. Hegel developed the famous triad of thesis-antithesis-synthesis, in which contradictions are seen not as absolute opposites, but as partial truths, which are synthesized in the whole. Ultimately all is One, which is absolute and non-contradictory. In Schaeffer’s view, Hegel’s system undermined the notion of particular absolute truths (such as “That act is morally wrong” or “This painting is aesthetically ugly”) by synthesizing them into the whole. This denial of absolutes has gradually made its way through Western culture. In each case, it results in despair, because without absolutes man’s endeavors degenerate into absurdity. Schaeffer believes that the Theater of the Absurd, abstract modern art, and modern music such as compositions by John Cage are all indications of what happens below the line of despair. Only by reaffirming belief in the absolute God of Christianity can man and his culture avoid inevitable degeneracy, meaninglessness, and despair.

Schaeffer’s efforts against abortion may be seen as a logical extension of this apologetic. Once God is denied, human life becomes worthless, and we see the fruit of such a philosophy in the abortion and infanticide now taking place in Western society. Schaeffer warns that unless Western man returns to the Christian world and life view, nothing will stop the trend from degenerating into population control and human breeding. Only a theistic worldview can save the human race from itself.

Before Dr. C. Everett Koop arrived in 1981 as Surgeon General could anybody ever name who the Surgeon General was? Koop also caused lots of editorial cartoons to be drawn about him because of his positions he took on health issues. Today’s cartoon below sums up the issues he tackled.

On 2-25-13 we lost a great man when we lost Dr. C. Everett Koop. I have written over and over the last few years quoting Dr. C. Everett Koop and his good friend Francis Schaeffer. They both came together for the first time in 1973 when Dr. Koop operated on Schaeffer’s daughter and as a result they became close friends. That led to their involvement together in the book and film series “WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE HUMAN RACE?” in 1979.

In this 1979 film series they dealt with the big social issues and predicted what social problems we have in the future because of humanism. For instance, they knew that the Jack Kevorkians of the world would be coming down the pike. They predicted that there was a slippery slope from abortion to infanticide to youth euthanasia brought on by the materialistic worldview.

Koop exhorted evangelicals to protect unborn

HANOVER, N.H. (BP) — Former U.S. Surgeon General C. Everett Koop, widely credited with energizing evangelicals against abortion, died peacefully Feb. 25 at his home in Hanover, N.H., at age 96.

The trailblazing pediatric surgeon developed a reputation as a preserver of life not only through groundbreaking surgeries and medical procedures, but through a morally, biblically based platform against sexual promiscuity and abortion, most notably before and after his two terms in the 1980s as surgeon general.

Koop also promoted the power of prayer in conjunction with medical science, famously praying at the bedsides of his patients.

In the 1979 book “Whatever Happened to the Human Race?” Koop and the late Frances Schaeffer made a case for the importance of mankind’s intrinsic God-given value in the preservation of humanity.

“If man is not made in the image of God, nothing then stands in the way of inhumanity. There is no good reason why mankind should be perceived as special. Human life is cheapened,” the two wrote. “We can see this in many of the major issues being debated in our society today: abortion, infanticide, euthanasia, the increase of child abuse and violence of all kinds, pornography (and its particular kinds of violence as evidenced in sadomasochism), the routine torture of political prisoners in many parts of the world, the crime explosion, and the random violence which surrounds us.”

Koop and Schaeffer endeavored to “awaken the evangelical world — and anyone else who would listen — to the Christian imperative to do something to reverse the perilous realignment of American values on these life-and-death issues” including abortion and infanticide, Koop reflected in his 1991 autobiography, “Koop: The Memoirs of America’s Family Doctor.”

Southern Baptist ethicist Richard Land has written that “it is difficult to overestimate the incredible impact” Koop and Schaeffer had on evangelicals in the 20th century.

“Everyone devoted to the pro-life cause owes an incalculable debt of gratitude to Francis Schaeffer and to Dr. C. Everett Koop,” Land wrote for National Right to Life in 2003. “First Schaeffer, and then Dr. Koop, helped inform and energize a whole generation of evangelical Christians to engagement with a culture that had veered dangerously off course from its Judeo-Christian foundations. The pro-life movement owes them an enormous debt.”

C. Ben Mitchell, professor of moral philosophy at Union University in Jackson, Tenn., hailed Koop’s legacy.

“We have lost the nation’s doctor,” Mitchell told Baptist Press. “As a gifted physician and faithful Christian, he taught us how to heal both body and soul. As a public servant he helped us navigate some tumultuous waves, even causing a few of his own. As a protector of human dignity and the sanctity of human life he cared for the tiniest and most vulnerable among us.”

After the U.S. legalized abortion, Koop predicted the practice would lead to infanticide, passive and active euthanasia and toward a political climate that, in Nazi Germany, led to Auschwitz and other concentration camps, according to news accounts of his speeches.

Koop, a Presbyterian, vowed during confirmation hearings before the U.S. Senate not to use his post as surgeon general to promote his religious ideology and occasionally angered evangelicals as he worked to keep his pledge.

Koop provoked controversy among evangelicals by encouraging sex education in elementary school, the use of condoms to prevent sexually transmitted diseases and compassionate health care for AIDS patients, who were then overwhelmingly within the homosexual community. Yet personally, he opposed homosexuality and promoted pre-marital sexual abstinence.

Among Koop’s other initiatives were calls for a smoking ban and campaigns promoting healthy eating and physical exercise education.

Melinda Delahoyde, president of the Care Net crisis pregnancy centers which Koop helped found, mourned Koop’s death.

“Dr. Koop took a courageous stand on the issue of life when not many were willing to do the same,” Delahoyde wrote on Care Net’s website. “He truly made a lasting impact, as his legacy lives on today through Care Net’s life-saving work to people facing unplanned pregnancies.”

As surgeon-in-chief at Children’s Hospital in Philadelphia, Koop pioneered surgery on newborns, successfully separating three sets of conjoined twins and reconstructing the chest of a baby born with the heart outside the body.

Koop’s recent outreach includes a letter he wrote in 2009 to Sen. Harry Reid urging that congressional health care legislation include a provision allowing doctors and medical students to opt out of performing abortions.

Koop was born Oct 14, 1916, in Brooklyn, N.Y., and, according to Reuters News, became interested in medicine after being badly injured as a child in a skiing accident and in playing football.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Elizabeth, and by their son David. He is survived by their children Allen Koop, Norman Koop and Elizabeth Thompson, as well as by his second wife Cora, whom he married in 2010, according to news reports.
