FREE TO CHOOSE “Who protects the worker?” Video and Transcript Part 1 of 7

In 1980 I read the book FREE TO CHOOSE by Milton Friedman and it really enlightened me a tremendous amount.  I suggest checking out these episodes and transcripts of Milton Friedman’s film series FREE TO CHOOSE: “The Failure of Socialism” and “What is wrong with our schools?”  and “Created Equal”  and  From Cradle to Grave, and – Power of the Market. Milton Friedman shows in this episode how the worker is best protected and it is not by the government!!!!!!!

Liberals say that the government must step in to help the workers and that the unions must but truly the best opportunity for the worker is increased competition from employers trying to hire him or her. Many times when the government gets involved the most unskilled worker is hurt the most.

In the final analysis, the best protection for the worker is neither unions nor government. Rather, it is the existence of other employers willing to compete for services of skilled individuals.
Milton Friedman makes this point in this episode:
“ In the United States the American Medical Association has for decades been one of the strongest labor unions in the country, keeping down the number of physicians, keeping up the costs of medical care, preventing competition by people from outside the profession with those in it. All, of course, in the name of helping the patient.”
Volume 8 – Who Protects the Worker?
Transcript:

Friedman: People who earn their living in a modern heavy industry seldom engage in the kind of back-breaking toil that was the everyday lot of most workers a century ago. And yet they earn far more. What has produced these improvements? The offhand reaction of most people is likely to be that labor unions are largely responsible for the enormous progress workers have made in the past two centuries. But clearly, at least for the U.S. that cannot be true. After all, in the 19th Century when workers did very well, there were hardly any labor unions at all. And even today, no more than one out of four or five workers is a member of a trade union. And the remainder do very well indeed in achieving the highest level of living in the world. Labor unions do, of course, benefit their members but far from being a key to the development of the modern society. They are a throwback to an earlier pre-industrial era to the agreements among craftsman in the middle ages or to go back even earlier, more than 2000 years ago to the agreement among medical men in Greece.

From the tiny Greece island of Kash, the coast of Asia Minor is four miles away in the mist. Twenty five hundred years ago a hospital and medical school flourished on Kash. The great Hippocrates, the founder of modern medicine, work there. Legend has it that Hippocrates taught his students in the shade of this plain tree. He welcomed anyone who wanted to learn, so long as they paid his fee. There is another legend that St. Paul stood here and preached the Gospel of Christianity. What isn’t legend is that Hippocrates and his followers started medicine on the road forward to becoming a science. When Hippocrates died at the age of 104, or so legend has it, this island was full of medial people, his students and disciples. Competition for custom was fierce. Some 20 years after he died they got together and constructed a code of conduct. They named it the Hippocratic Oath, after their old teacher and master. Every new physician, before he could start practice, came to this spot back here in front of those columns and took the Oath. The oath was full of fine ideals for protecting the patient. But it also had a couple of other things in it. Listen to this one, “I will impart a knowledge of the art to my own self and those of my teachers and to disciples bound by a stipulation and oath according to the law of medicine, but to none others.” Today we’d call that a closed shop. Or listen to this one referring to patients suffering from the agonizing disease of kidney or bladder stones, “I will not cut persons laboring under the stone but will leave this to be done by men who are practitioners of this work.” A nice market sharing agreement between physicians and surgeons. Hippocrates must turn in his grave when a new class of medical men takes that oath. After all, he taught anyone provided only they pay his tuition. He would strongly have objected to the kind of restrictive practices that physicians all over the world have adopted to protect their custom. In the United States the American Medical Association has for decades been one of the strongest labor unions in the country, keeping down the number of physicians, keeping up the costs of medical care, preventing competition by people from outside the profession with those in it. All, of course, in the name of helping the patient.

Without warning, anyone of us may suddenly need medical care. If we do, we want the very best care we can get. But who can give us that care?

It is always a graduate of an expensive medical school who has a union card called a medical license? Or might it be someone like this a trained paramedic working for a private enterprise organization rendering emergency care?

Paramedic: And hopefully we’ll get a very good contract out of that.

Friedman: Many such businesses provide primary care for emergency cases in the United States. This particular paramedic team is attached to a fire department in southern California. They’re good at their job. But it’s not unusual to find local physicians objecting.

Joe Dolphin: They take the Hippocratic Oath here in the United States and they believe that they should be the one that is treating their patient. They should be the one that saves that patient’s life. And if someone else does it, it just kind of interferes with everything that they have been taught.

Friedman: But why should medical care be a monopoly of licensed physicians? Shouldn’t anyone who is capable of providing effective help be free to do so.

Paramedic: I’m going to take your blood pressure here. Okay, any one see him go down?

Friedman: You can be sure that no one would be able to stay in this business very long unless he can demonstrate by performance that he’s doing a good job. Joe Dolphin knows that very well.

Joe Dolphin: We’ve taken some statistical samples of the kind of effectiveness paramedics have in California. Giving an example of that, in one district of California that we serve which is a county which is populated to the extent of 580,000 people. Before the introduction of paramedics, less than 1% of the patients that suffered a cardiac arrest or their heart stopped, lived through their hospital stay and were released from the hospital. But with the introduction of paramedics, just in the first six months of operation, 23% of the people who’s heart stops, are successfully resuscitated and are released from the hospital and go back to productive working society. We think that’s pretty amazing. We think the facts speak for themselves. However, relating that to the medical community is sometimes very difficult. They have ideas of their own.

Paramedics: Respirations 12 and regular by… Looks good to me Dave. How are you reading this down there? Are you guys ready to go? Yeah. It says Code Two. Code Two?

Friedman: Disputes between union and non-union workers are not always as high-minded as between organized medicine and Joe Dolphin.

“Friedman Friday” Margaret Thatcher admired Milton Friedman

RARE Friedman Footage – On Keys to Reagan and Thatcher’s Success

Margaret Thatcher and Milton Friedman were two of my heroes.

Thatcher praises Friedman, her freedom fighter

Milton Friedman, the free market economist who inspired Margaret Thatcher’s economic reforms of the 1980s, died yesterday aged 94.

His theory that inflation resulted from too much money chasing too few goods inspired a generation of central bankers and played a pivotal role in forming the governing philosophies of Lady Thatcher and President Ronald Reagan in the US.

Lady Thatcher said last night: “Milton Friedman revived the economics of liberty when it had been all but forgotten. He was an intellectual freedom fighter. Never was there a less dismal practitioner of a dismal science.

“I shall greatly miss my old friend’s lucid wisdom and mordant humour.”

Mr Friedman, winner of a 1976 Nobel Prize, died in hospital in San Francisco of heart failure, according to his family. He was born in Brooklyn on July 31 1912, the son of a merchant and a seamstress who were immigrants from Austria-Hungary.

His teachings at the University of Chicago helped foster the “Chicago School” of economics, known for theories associated with free-market libertarianism.

When he first came to prominence in the late 1940s, he was one of a tiny minority who ventured to question the prevailing wisdom of Keynesianism, that economies could and should be managed by manipulation of taxes and government spending.

But by the mid-1970s — as inflation took off and state-dominated economies slid into decline — Friedman’s ideas influenced Sir Keith Joseph, who advised the new Tory leader, Margaret Thatcher, to reject the interventionist policies of her predecessor Edward Heath.

He served as an adviser to the Thatcher government from 1979 to 1990 as it developed a free-market economy, low taxation, and the sale of state-owned industries.

Mr Friedman believed that tax-funded government spending was appropriate only to the most limited set of “public goods”, such as national defence.

Open letter to President Obama (Part 599)

President Obama c/o The White House 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW Washington, DC 20500

Dear Mr. President,

I know that you receive 20,000 letters a day and that you actually read 10 of them every day. I really do respect you for trying to get a pulse on what is going on out here. I know that you don’t agree with my pro-life views but I wanted to challenge you as a fellow Christian to re-examine your pro-choice view.

Many in the world today are taking a long look at the abortion industry because of the May 14, 2013 guilty verdict and life term penalty handed down by a jury (which included 9 out of 12 pro-choice jurors)  to Dr. Kermit Gosnell. During this time of reflection I wanted to put forth some of the pro-life’s best arguments.

In the film series “WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE HUMAN RACE?” the arguments are presented  against abortion (Episode 1),  infanticide (Episode 2),   euthanasia (Episode 3), and then there is a discussion of the Christian versus Humanist worldview concerning the issue of “the basis for human dignity” in Episode 4 and then in the last episode a close look at the truth claims of the Bible.

Francis Schaeffer

I truly believe that many of the problems we have today in the USA are due to the advancement of humanism in the last few decades in our society. Ronald Reagan appointed the evangelical Dr. C. Everett Koop to the position of Surgeon General in his administration. He partnered with Dr. Francis Schaeffer in making the video below. It is very valuable information for Christians to have.  Actually I have included a video below that includes comments from him on this subject.

He has written several books including The Gnostic Empire Strikes Back (1992), Gospel Truth/Pagan Lies (1999), Capturing the Pagan Mind (2003), and The God of Sex (2006).

According to news reports, District Attorney Seth Williams will soon reveal the charges he will file against Kermit Gosnell, the 69-year-old abortion center owner who, after failed abortions, killed Karnamay Mongar and seven other infants with scissors. We have rarely seen such a grisly case of blood-letting, yet the mainstream media are not reporting it.

Even the somewhat liberal Kirsten Powers of USAToday states:

“The deafening silence of too much of the media, once a force for justice in America, is a disgrace…When Rush Limbaugh attacked Sandra Fluke, there was non-stop media hysteria…Yet, accusations of babies having their heads severed — a major human rights story if there ever was one — doesn’t make the cut.”

Had Kermit Gosnell killed dogs, we would be seeing wall-to-wall coverage, but  his filthy clinic and his ghoulish collection of aborted babies (dating back thirty years!) had never been checked by the “authorities.”

GosnellWhy the inaction and deafening silence? It is a question of worldview, a Oneist worldview.

Most of you who read my Inside/Outs have concluded that our American/Western society is “awful.” But how do we analyze “awful” and what can we do about it?  Among the many offensive changes is the chilling holocaust of abortion.

Rare have been the times that biblical Christianity has been in such open conflict with its enemy, today calling itself by the innocuous term, “progressivism.” Elizabeth Fox-Genovese, the Marxist feminist PhD Harvard American Historian, observed about the Sixties, at the end of her life in 1998 “within a remarkably brief period …has occurred a cataclysmic transformation of the very nature of our society.”

There is a simple way to understand the deep conflict of contemporary worldviews. Don’t be intimidated by the word “worldview.” According to the Apostle Paul, there are only two: You worship creation or you worship the Creator (Rom 1:25). This is the ultimate “binary,” by which I mean things that are and remain distinct or different, and will never be fused into one.

The two irreconcilable worldviews may be described in the following ways:

Oneism

The world is self-creating and self-explanatory, and everything is made up of the same stuff, whether matter, spirit or a mixture. There is one basic kind of self-creating existence. In one way or another we worship evolving Nature as divine. Since everything shares in the same divine substance, all distinctions are eliminated and everything is god.

Twoism

The world is the work of an external Creator who caringly made it but is separate and different from it. There are two kinds of existence—the Creator who is uncreated, and everything else, which is created. This worldview celebrates two-ness. We worship as divine only the personal triune Creator, who defined distinctions as the essence of all existence.

If you can do the theological arithmetic of One or Two you will understand the deep conflict in our world. Present opposition to the Gospel is twofold:

1. The promotion of a Oneist view of all of reality, and,

2. The determined elimination of “the binary,” that is, all expressions of biblical Twoism, and especially the binary of the distinction between the Creator and the creation.

In forthcoming Inside/Outs I intend to show, in each area of life where we see conflict, how various social disagreements find their roots in the religious conflict of these two worldviews.

So let’s see how Oneism and Twoism are evident in the issue of abortionist Kermit Gosnell. Francis Schaeffer was right when he warned us a generation ago about the worldview known as secular humanism, which believed that since humanity is only the product of chance, then there are no moral reasons why we should treat fellow human beings as special, created in God’s image.

But there is now a further reason to explain this human tragedy—the “logic” of Oneism.  Pro-abortion advocates argue that the fetus is part of the woman’s body. She “owns” it and is thus free to get rid of it, as she might choose to have a face lift or a tummy tuck. (Biologists understand that the mother’s own body treats the fetus as a foreigner, as evidenced by morning sickness and the biological preparation for independent life.) Planned Parenthood recently stated, without embarrassment that the decision to kill the child who survives an abortion remains with the mother and her doctor! The binary is busted in this horrendous act of infanticide.

This is a noxious form of Oneism. The distinction between two human beings, each made individually in God’s image and deserving of utmost respect, is rejected in favor of the rights of one human being. The mother is important. The baby ultimately has no existence.

Oneism claims to unite us, but without the Twoist world of morals, Oneism leads to more than “awful.” It leads to total degradation and judgment.

Thank you so much for your time. I know how valuable it is. I also appreciate the fine family that you have and your commitment as a father and a husband. I also respect you for putting your faith in Christ for your eternal life. I am pleading to you on the basis of the Bible to please review your religious views concerning abortion. It was the Bible that caused the abolition movement of the 1800’s and it also was the basis for Martin Luther King’s movement for civil rights and it also is the basis for recognizing the unborn children.

Last December, we had some amusing humor about Obama’s infamous “selfie” at Nelson Mandela’s funeral.

Now we have something far more biting.

I’m not competent to discuss the foreign policy angle, or whether Obama’s done the right thing or wrong thing.

But I do appreciate low-blow political humor.

Dr. John J. Shea appeared on the TV series APE MAN with Walter Cronkite back in the 1990’s and claimed that there is only a degree of difference between monkeys and humans and not a categorical difference. After that program aired I had the opportunity to correspond with Dr. Shea and he was kind enough to send me a two page response to my questions. (This correspondence took place back in 1994 and 1995.)

Dr. Shea also suggested that I read SHADOWS OF FORGOTTEN ANCESTORS by Carl Sagan and his wife Ann Druyan, and I did so. Here are my thoughts on the question.

First, only humans lie in the sense we are held morally responsible. Sagan wrote, “Deception in the social relations of animals…is an emerging and productive topic in biology…” (p. 379). This may be true, but are animals responsible to God? I think not. Romans 3:23 teaches that “All MEN have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Animals may deceive but they are not morally responsible.

Second, only men feel guilt. Sagan refers briefly to the fact that men feel guilt (p. 4.14), but he does not spend a lot of time on this. Romans 1:19 asserts, “For that which is known about God is evident to them and made plain in their inner consciousness, because God has show it to them” (Amplified Bible).  Here Sagan turns to  Thomas Henry Huxley who he quotes:

On all sides, I shall hear the cry–“We are men and women, not a mere better sort of apes, a little longer in the leg, more compact in the foot, and bigger in brain than your brutal Chimpanzees and Gorillas. The power of knowledge–the conscience of good and evil--the pitiful tenderness of human affections, raise us out of all real fellowship with the brutes, however, closely they may seem to approximate us.”

To this I can reply that the exclamation would be just and would be most just and would have my entire sympathy, if it were only relevant. But, it is not I who seek to base Man’s dignity upon this great toe, or insinuate that we are lost if an Ape has a hippocampus minor (in its brain). On the contrary, I have done my best to sweep away this vanity…

WHY DID SAGAN AND HUXLEY FACE SUCH A LARGE CHORUS THAT WAS OBJECTING TO THIS VIEW THAT WE DON’T HAVE A GOD-GIVEN CONSCIENCE? The answer is very simple and it deals with the consequences of Social Darwinism. Chuck Colson said that Larry King was not very impressed with his long talk on the historical accuracy of the scriptures, but when he touched on this subject things got interesting:

Larry King invited me to dinner. “I don’t believe in God,” Larry told me straight out. “But tell me why you believe.” I responded, “Have you seen Woody Allen‘s movie CRIMES AND MISDEMEANORS?

Yes, he loved it, in fact. It’s about a doctor who is haunted by GUILT after hiring a killer to murder his mistress. His Jewish father has taught him that God will surely bring justice. In the end the doctor suppresses his GUILT, convincing himself that LIFE IS AN DARWINIAN STRUGGLE WHERE ONLY THE RUTHLESS SURVIVE.

I asked Larry, “Is that our only choice–to be tormented by GUILT or else kill our conscience? Larry, how do you deal with your conscience?” He dropped his fork. I said, “What do you do with the GUILT that is in here? What do you do with what you know you have done wrong?

Then he was ready to listen. I went on and shared with him from Romans which teaches about the voice of conscience that God has given us.

__________

Third, men have a longing for significance which expresses itself most clearly in the fear of non being.

Fourth, I would point to the fact that only people worship.

Fifth, men are not satisfied unless they have their spiritual needs met. Carl Sagan quotes the poet Walt Whitman, “Not one (animal) is dissatisfied…Not one is respectable or unhappy over the whole earth…” Sagan comments, “On this basis of the evidence presented in this book, we doubt if any of Whitman’s  six purported differences between other animals and humans is true…” (p. 389).

I read Sagan’s book cover to cover and made over 15 pages of notes, and I have yet to find any of the “evidence” that Sagan speaks of on page 389. I find the comments of NOAM CHOMSKY more logical. He calls animal language an “evolutionary miracle” akin to “finding an island of humans who could be taught to fly.”

I like Francis Schaeffer‘s term “Mannishness” of man. He defines it as those aspects of man, such as significance, love, rationality and the fear of non being, which mark him off from animals and machines and give evidence of his being created in the image of a personal God.

The scientist Blaise Pascal is quoted by Sagan on page 364 and then Sagan notes, “Most of the philosophers adjudged great in the history of western thought held that humans are fundamentally different from other animals…”

As you know Pascal was the inventor of the barometer and he lived from 1623 to 1662. Pascal also observed, “There is a God-shaped vacuum in the heart of every man,and only God can fill it.”

What is the solution? “For God so loved the world that He gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16). The scriptural directive is not for us to work harder to achieve God’s favor (Romans 3:20), but to accept God’s mercy through our repentance and receiving Christ as a free gift (Ephesians 2:8-10).

LEAVING THE FOLD by Edward T. Babinski. Buffalo, NY: Prometheus Books, 1995. 462 pages, 4 appendices, index, notes. Cloth; $32.95.

_________

This book came out in the late 1990’s and here is my review of it. My friend Ed Babinski wrote it.

LEAVING THE FOLD by Edward T. Babinski. Buffalo, NY: Prometheus Books, 1995. 462 pages, 4 appendices, index, notes. Cloth; $32.95.

The purpose of Leaving the Fold is to give a clear picture of what attracts a person to the fundamentalist faith and what can drive believers away from their religion. There are more than 30 testimonies from people who have left the fold of fundamentalism. The first section is called Fundamentalism’s Grotesque Past. In the next section, eleven testimonies of former fundamentalists who are now more liberal Christians are given. The bulk of Leaving the Fold is found in the third section where testimonies are given by former fundamentalists who are now agnostics or atheists.

The author, Edward T. Babinski, is on the staff of J. B. Duke Library at Furman University. Judging from his personal testimony given in the book, he is well-qualified to write on this subject. Before becoming an agnostic, Mr. Babinski was an evangelical Christian who felt he had the absolute knowledge of life and death (p 210).

Over and over in Leaving the Fold, it is pointed out that fundamentalists hold to the belief that the Bible is absolute knowledge without any trace of error. Professor John Barnhart, department of philosophy at the University of North Texas, put it this way: “I came to believe that without an error-free or infallible Bible to serve as the foundation of the Christian structure, the structure would collapse and possibly morality along with it” (p. 334). Having absolute knowledge is one of the attractive things about fundamentalism. Another one is having the promise of eternal life. Kevin R. Henke said, “How could I live without God, and the promise of eternal life?” (p. 245).

The two most common reasons people leave the fold according to this book are the hypocritical lives of fundamentalists and errors in the Bible. A turning point in Babinski’s life came when he read a series of articles in the Skeptical Inquirer in which scriptures were cited that seemed to show that the Bible’s authors truly believed in a flat circular earth (p. 29). However, this so-called scientific error of the Bible is actually a result of Mr. Babinski’s weak interpretation of scripture. No scientific inaccuracy can be found in the verses he cites (Is. 40:22, Jer. 31:37 and Ps. 22:27). For instance, Isaiah 40:22 says, “He (God) sits enthroned above the circle of the earth.” The word circle in this verse is the word sphere in Hebrew (chuwg). It is a figure formed by a circle turning about its diameter.

Jeremiah 31:37 says: “Only if the heavens above can be measured and the foundations of the earth below searched out will I reject all the descendants of Israel.” Mr. Babinski comments: “In other words, just as Israel will never be totally `cast off’ the foundations of the flat earth are portrayed as ever remaining a mystery to man” (p. 230). A better interpretation would be that God will preserve Israel as a nation, and man will never be able to find the end of the universe. Of course, the facts are that in 1948 Israel was constituted a nation again, and even with our largest telescopes man has not found the end of our huge universe. Furthermore, Mr. Babinski says, “the biblical earth is often described as having `ends. A flat, circular earth would square well with such speech” (p. 229). Psalm 22:27 says: “All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the Lord and all the families of the nations will bow down before him.” This is just a figure of speech meaning that everyone everywhere will bow before the Christ of the cross one day. King David in this passage is describing Christ’s crucifixion hundreds of years before the Jews knew of that method of capital punishment. The Jews executed by stoning. Yet, you read these words in Psalm 22:16, “They have pierced my hands and my feet.” In fact, over a dozen exact medical descriptions of death by crucifixion are given in this passage.

Although there is some extremely bad interpretation of scripture in Leaving the Fold, it does have value. It is a very thought-provoking book which discusses almost every aspect of the fundamentalist viewpoint. The major weakness of this book is its failure to realize that leaving the fold is never caused by intellectual problems with the Bible. That is just a popular excuse. Hebrews 3:12 tells us the real reason people leave the fold. It says, “Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God.”

Dear Senator Pryor, here are some spending cut suggestions (“Thirsty Thursday”, Open letter to Senator Pryor)

Dear Senator Pryor, here are some spending cut suggestions (“Thirsty Thursday”, Open letter to Senator Pryor)

Senator Pryor pictured below:

Why do I keep writing and email Senator Pryor suggestions on how to cut our budget? I gave him hundreds of ideas about how to cut spending and as far as I can tell he has taken none of my suggestions. You can find some of my suggestions here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here,  here, and  here, and they all were emailed to him. In fact, I have written 13 posts pointing out reasons why I believe Senator Pryor’s re-election attempt will be unsuccessful. HERE I GO AGAIN WITH ANOTHER EMAIL I JUST SENT TO SENATOR PRYOR!!!

Dear Senator Pryor,

Why not pass the Balanced  Budget amendment? As you know that federal deficit is at all time high (1.6 trillion deficit with revenues of 2.2 trillion and spending at 3.8 trillion).

On my blog www.thedailyhatch.org . I took you at your word and sent you over 100 emails with specific spending cut ideas. (Actually there were over 160 emails with specific spending cut suggestions.) However, I did not see any of them in the recent debt deal that Congress adopted although you did respond to me several times. Now I am trying another approach. Every week from now on I will send you an email explaining different reasons why we need the Balanced Budget Amendment. It will appear on my blog on “Thirsty Thursday” because the government is always thirsty for more money to spend. Today I actually have included a great article below from the Heritage Foundation concerning an area of our federal budget that needs to be cut down to size. The funny thing about the Sequester and the 2.4% of cuts in future increases is that President Obama set these up and then he acted like the sky was falling in as the cartoons indicate in the newspapers.

IF YOU TRULY WANT TO CUT THE BUDGET AND BALANCE THE BUDGET THEN SUBMIT THESE POTENTIAL BUDGET CUTS PRESENTED BELOW!!

___________

The Moocher Index is a measure of which state has the highest level of welfare dependency!!! We got to cut welfare programs because they are creating a moochers mentality.

Back in 2010, I put together a “Moocher Index” as a rough measure of which states had the highest levels of welfare dependency after adjusting for poverty rates.

My goal was to answer this question.

Is there a greater willingness to sign up for income redistribution programs, all other things being equal, from one state to another?

It turned out that there were huge differences among states. Nearly 18 percent of non-poor Vermont residents were utilizing one or more welfare programs, putting them at the top of the Moocher Index.

In Nevada, by contrast, less the 4 percent of non-poor residents had their snouts in the public trough.

Does this mean Nevada residents are more self-reliant and Vermont residents are culturally statist?

To be perfectly frank, I don’t know, in part because the Moocher Index was an indirect measure of attitudes about dependency.

So I was very interested when I came across some state-by-state numbers from the Department of Agriculture showing food stamp participation compared to food stamp eligibility.

Food Stamp Participation Rate

There are some clear similarities between these food stamp numbers and the Moocher Index. Maine and Vermont are in the top 3 of both lists, which doesn’t reflect well on people from that part of the country.

And Nevada and Colorado are in the bottom 10 of both lists.

But there’s no consistent pattern. Mississippi and Hawaii are in the top 10 of the Moocher Index but bottom 10 for food stamp utilization.

What really stands out, though, is that the people of California win the prize for self reliance, at least with regard to food stamps. Only 55 percent of eligible people from the Golden State have signed up for the program. Doesn’t make sense when you look at some of the crazy things that are approved by California voters, but I assume the numbers are accurate.

I’m also surprised that folks from New Jersey are relatively unlikely to utilize food stamps.

On the other hand, why are Tennessee residents so willing to use my wallet to buy food?

As you can see from the map, they not only have a very high participation/eligibility rate, but also have one of the highest overall levels of food stamp dependency.

Oregon, not surprisingly, always does poorly, whether we’re looking at a map or a list.

Let’s close with a few real-world examples of what we’re getting in exchange for the tens of billions of dollars that are being spent each year for food stamps.

With stories like this, I’m surprised my head didn’t explode during this debate I did on Larry Kudlow’s show.

_______________

The Balanced Budget Amendment is the only thing I can think of that would force Washington to cut spending. We have only a handful of balanced budgets in the last 60 years, so obviously what we are doing is not working. We are passing along this debt to the next generation. YOUR APPROACH HAS BEEN TO REJECT THE BALANCED BUDGET “BECAUSE WE SHOULD CUT THE BUDGET OURSELF,” WELL THEN HERE IS YOUR CHANCE!!!! SUBMIT THESE CUTS!!!!

Thank you for this opportunity to share my ideas with you.

Open letter to President Obama (Part 598) We could put in a flat tax and it would enable us to cut billions out of the IRS budget!!!!

Open letter to President Obama (Part 598)

(Emailed to White House on 6-10-13.)

President Obama c/o The White House 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW Washington, DC 20500

Dear Mr. President,

I know that you receive 20,000 letters a day and that you actually read 10 of them every day. I really do respect you for trying to get a pulse on what is going on out here.

The federal government debt is growing so much that it is endangering us because if things keep going like they are now we will not have any money left for the national defense because we are so far in debt as a nation. We have been spending so much on our welfare state through food stamps and other programs that I am worrying that many of our citizens are becoming more dependent on government and in many cases they are losing their incentive to work hard because of the welfare trap the government has put in place. Other nations in Europe have gone down this road and we see what mess this has gotten them in. People really are losing their faith in big government and they want more liberty back. It seems to me we have to get back to the founding  principles that made our country great.  We also need to realize that a big government will encourage waste and corruption. The recent scandals in our government have proved my point. In fact, the jokes you made at Ohio State about possibly auditing them are not so funny now that reality shows how the IRS was acting more like a monster out of control. Also raising taxes on the job creators is a very bad idea too. The Laffer Curve clearly demonstrates that when the tax rates are raised many individuals will move their investments to places where they will not get taxed as much.

IRS Budget Soars

The revelations of IRS officials targeting conservative and libertarian groups suggest that now is a good time for lawmakers to review a broad range of the agency’s activities. Since the agency’s last overhaul in the IRS Restructuring and Reform Act of 1998, its budget has exploded from $33 billion to a proposed $106 billion in 2013.

Using data from the OMB budget database, I split total IRS outlays into two broad activities: administration and handouts. Administration includes tax return processing, investigations, enforcement, and other bureaucratic functions. Handouts mainly includes spending on “refundable” tax credits such as the EITC.

The chart shows that the IRS has become a huge social welfare agency in recent decades. Handouts have soared from $4.4 billion in 1990 to an estimated $91.1 billion in 2013 (red line). Handouts are down a bit in recent years because some of the refundable credits from “stimulus” legislation have expired. IRS administration costs have grown from $7.7 billion in 1990 to an estimated $15.3 billion in 2013 (blue line).

How should we reform the IRS budget? First, we should terminate the handout programs. That would save taxpayers more than $90 billion annually and cut the IRS budget by 86 percent.

The largest IRS handout is the refundable part of the EITC, which is expected to cost $55 billion in 2013. Many policymakers favor the EITC as a “conservative” handout program because it encourages people to work. But the EITC itself creates a discouragement to increased work over the income range that it is phased-out. It also adds to tax-code complexity and has an error and fraud rate of more than 20 percent.

The EITC is an example of how big government begets more big government. We certainly wouldn’t need the EITC incentive to work if we slashed all the taxes and welfare programs that currently encourage people not to work.

It’s a similar situation with other IRS handout programs, such as the $1 billion “Therapeutic Discovery” grant program. These grants are supposed to “produce new and cost-saving therapies, support jobs and increase U.S. competitiveness.” But it would be better to accomplish those goals by repealing the excise tax on medical devices and slashing the high 40 percent U.S. corporate income tax.

As for the $15 billion in spending on IRS administration, we could dramatically cut that cost with major tax reforms. In particular, a consumption-based flat tax would hugely simplify the code and greatly reduce paperwork costs of the IRS and taxpayers alike.

Looking ahead, the IRS budget is expected to balloon in coming years as the agency plays a key role in implementing ObamaCare. Unless the health care legislation is repealed, IRS outlays are expected to soar from $106 billion this year to $263 billion by 2023.

CSICOP experts commented 15 years ago on a lie-detector’s ability to detect one’s repressed belief in God!!!!

In the book, THE DEMON-HAUNTED WORLD: Science as a Candle in the Dark by Carl Sagan.  Sagan writes:

The Committee for the Scientific Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal is an organization of scientists, academics, magicians, and others dedicated to skeptical scrutiny of emerging or full-blown pseudo-sciences. It was founded by the University of Buffalo philosopher Paul Kurtz in 1976. I’ve been affiliated with it since its beginning. Its acronym, CSICOP, is pronounced sci-cop C as if it’s an organization of scientists performing a police function  CSICOP publishes a bimonthly periodical called The Skeptical Inquirer. On the day it arrives, I take it home from the office and pore through its pages, wondering what new misunderstandings will be revealed (p. 299).

Back in the late 1990’s I corresponded with many scholars from CSICOP concerning the lie-detector’s ability to detect one’s repressed belief in God. I have a good friend who is a street preacher who preaches on the Santa Monica Promenade in California and during the Q/A sessions he does have lots of atheists that enjoy their time at the mic. When this happens he  always quotes Romans 1:18-19 (Amplified Bible) ” For God’s wrath and indignation are revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who in their wickedness REPRESS and HINDER the truth and make it inoperative. For that which is KNOWN about God is EVIDENT to them and MADE PLAIN IN THEIR INNER CONSCIOUSNESS, because God  has SHOWN IT TO THEM,”(emphasis mine). Then he  tells the atheist that the atheist already knows that God exists but he has been suppressing that knowledge in unrighteousness. This usually infuriates the atheist.

My friend draws some large crowds at times and was thinking about setting up a lie detector test and see if atheists actually secretly believe in God. He discussed this project with me since he knew that I had done a lot of research on the idea about 20 years ago.

Nelson Price in THE EMMANUEL FACTOR (1987) tells the story about Brown Trucking Company in Georgia who used to give polygraph tests to their job applicants. However, in part of the test the operator asked, “Do you believe in God?” In every instance when a professing atheist answered “No,” the test showed the person to be lying. My pastor Adrian Rogers used to tell this same story to illustrate Romans 1:19 and it was his conclusion that “there is no such thing anywhere on earth as a true atheist. If a man says he doesn’t believe in God, then he is lying. God has put his moral consciousness into every man’s heart, and a man has to try to kick his conscience to death to say he doesn’t believe in God.”

It is true that polygraph tests for use in hiring were banned by Congress in 1988.  Mr and Mrs Claude Brown on Aug 25, 1994  wrote me a letter confirming that over 15,000 applicants previous to 1988 had taken the polygraph test and EVERY TIME SOMEONE SAID THEY DID NOT BELIEVE IN GOD, THE MACHINE SAID THEY WERE LYING.

It had been difficult to catch up to the Browns. I had heard about them from Dr. Rogers’ sermon but I did not have enough information to locate them. Dr. Rogers referred me to Dr. Nelson Price and Dr. Price’s office told me that Claude Brown lived in Atlanta. After writing letters to all 9 of the entries for Claude Brown in the Atlanta telephone book, I finally got in touch with the Browns.

Adrian Rogers also pointed out that the Bible does not recognize the theoretical atheist.  Psalms 14:1: The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God.”  Dr Rogers notes, “The fool is treating God like he would treat food he did not desire in a cafeteria line. ‘No broccoli for me!’ ” In other words, the fool just doesn’t want God in his life and is a practical atheist, but not a theoretical atheist. Charles Ryrie in the The Ryrie Study Bible came to the same conclusion on this verse.

Here are the conclusions of the experts I wrote in the secular world concerning the lie detector test and it’s ability to get at the truth:

Professor Frank Horvath of the School of Criminal Justice at Michigan State University has testified before Congress concerning the validity of the polygraph machine. He has stated on numerous occasions that “the evidence from those who have actually been affected by polygraph testing in the workplace is quite contrary to what has been expressed by critics. I give this evidence greater weight than I give to the most of the comments of critics” (letter to me dated October 6, 1994).

There was no better organization suited to investigate this claim concerning the lie detector test than the Committee for the Scientific Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal (CSICOP). This organization changed their name to the Committe for Skeptical Inquiry in 2006. This organization includes anyone who wants to help debunk the whole ever-expanding gamut of misleading, outlandish, and fraudulent claims made in the name of science.

I read The Skeptical Review(publication of CSICOP) for several years during the 90’s and I would write letters to these scientists about taking this project on and putting it to the test.  Below are some of  their responses (15 to 20 years old now):

1st Observation: Religious culture of USA could have influenced polygraph test results.
ANTONY FLEW  (formerly of Reading University in England, now deceased, in a letter to me dated 8-11-96) noted, “For all the evidence so far available seems to be of people from a culture in which people are either directly brought up to believe in the existence of God or at least are strongly even if only unconsciously influenced by those who do. Even if everyone from such a culture revealed unconscious belief, it would not really begin to show that — as Descartes maintained— the idea of God is so to speak the Creator’s trademark, stamped on human souls by their Creator at their creation.”

2nd Observation: Polygraph Machines do not work. JOHN R. COLE, anthropologist, editor, National Center for Science Education, Dr. WOLF RODER, professor of Geography, University of Cincinnati, Dr. SUSAN BLACKMORE,Dept of Psychology, University of the West of England, Dr. CHRISTOPHER C. FRENCH, Psychology Dept, Goldsmith’s College, University of London, Dr.WALTER F. ROWE, The George Washington University, Dept of Forensic Sciences, Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.

3rd Observation: The sample size probably was not large enough to apply statistical inference. (These gentlemen made the following assertion before I received the letter back from Claude Brown that revealed that the sample size was over 15,000.) JOHN GEOHEGAN, Chairman of New Mexicans for Science and Reason, Dr. WOLF RODER, and Dr WALTER F. ROWE (in a letter dated July 12, 1994) stated, “The polygraph operator for Brown Trucking Company has probably examined only a few hundred or a few thousand job applicants. I would surmise that only a very small number of these were actually atheists. It seems a statistically insignificant (and distinctly nonrandom) sampling of the 5 billion human beings currently inhabiting the earth. Dr. Nelson Price also seems to be impugning the integrity of anyone who claims to be an atheist in a rather underhanded fashion.”

4th Observation: The question (Do you believe in God?)  was out of place and it surprised the applicants. THOMAS GILOVICH, psychologist, Cornell Univ., Dr. ZEN FAULKES, professor of Biology, University of Victoria (Canada), ROBERT CRAIG, Head of Indiana Skeptics Organization, Dr. WALTER ROWE,

5th Observation: Proof that everyone believes in God’s existence does not prove that God does in fact exist. PAUL QUINCEY, Nathional Physical Laboratory,(England), Dr. CLAUDIO BENSKI, Schneider Electric, CFEPP, (France),
6th Observation: Both the courts and Congress recognize that lie-detectors don’t work and that is why they were banned in 1988.  (Governments and the military still use them.)
Dr WALTER ROWE, KATHLEEN M. DILLION, professor of Psychology, Western New England College.
7th Observation:This information concerning Claude Brown’s claim has been passed on to us via a tv preacher and eveybody knows that they are untrustworthy– look at their history. WOLF RODER.

Solomon wisely noted in Ecclesiastes 3:11 “God has planted eternity in the heart of men…” (Living Bible). No wonder Bertrand Russell wrote in his autobiography, “It is odd, isn’t it? I feel passionately for this world and many things and people in it, and yet…what is it all? There must be something more important, one feels, though I don’t believe there is. I am haunted. Some ghosts, for some extra mundane regions, seem always trying to tell me something that I am to repeat to the world, but I cannot understand that message.”
Gene Emery, science writer for Providence Journal-Bulletin is a past winner of the CSICOP “Responsibility in Journalism Award” and he had the best suggestion of all when he suggested, “Actually, if you want to make a good case about whether Romans 1:19 is true, arrange to have a polygraph operator (preferably an atheist or agnostic) brought to the next CSICOP meeting. (I’m not a member of CSICOP, by the way, so I can’t give you an official invitation or anything.) If none of the folks at that meeting can convince the machine that they truly believe in God, maybe there is, in fact, an innate willingness to believe in God.”

Let me share a story from a former atheist named Jamie Lash:

DOES GOD BELIEVE IN ATHEISTS?

I grew up as an atheist. I thought that the reason I didn’t believe was the lack of evidence that I could see or touch. I kept asking God to show me a sign if He was really there. He didn’t. Despite nine months of searching, I was just as alienated from God as I had ever been.

I remember the shock it was when God revealed to me that what I thought was the obstacle wasn’t the obstacle at all! The obstacle was pride and hardness of heart. It wasn’t a head problem; it was a heart problem. I had to come to the place where I was willing to let God be God over my life. Was I willing to confess (i.e. admit) that Jesus is Lord?

Years ago Adrian Rogers counseled with a NASA scientist and his severely depressed wife. The wife pointed to her husband and said, “My problem is him.” She went on to explain that her husband was a drinker, a liar, and an adulterer. Dr. Rogers asked the man if he were a Christian. “No!” the man laughed. “I’m an atheist.”

“Really?” Dr. Rogers replied. “That means you’re someone who knows that God does not exist.”

“That’s right,” said the man.

“Would it be fair to say that you don’t know all there is to know in the universe?”

“Of course.”

“Would it be generous to say you know half of all there is to know?”

“Yes.”

“Wouldn’t it be possible that God’s existence might be in the half you don’t know?”

“Okay, but I don’t think He exists.”

“Well then, you’re not an atheist; you’re an agnostic. You’re a doubter.”

“Yes, and I’m a big one.”

“It doesn’t matter what size you are. I want to know what kind you are.”

“What kinds are there?”

“There are honest doubters and dishonest doubters. An honest doubter is willing to search out the truth and live by the results; a dishonest doubter doesn’t want to know the truth. He can’t find God for the same reason a thief can’t find a policeman.”

“I want to know the truth.”

“Would you like to prove that God exists?”

“It can’t be done.”

“It can be done. You’ve just been in the wrong laboratory. Jesus said, ‘If any man’s will is to do His will, he will know whether my teaching is from God or whether I am speaking on my own authority’ (John 7:17). I suggest you read one chapter of the book of John each day, but before you do, pray something like this, ‘God, I don’t know if You’re there, I don’t know if the Bible is true, I don’t know if Jesus is Your Son. But if You show me that You are there, that the Bible is true, and that Jesus is Your Son, then I will follow You. My will is to do your will.”

The man agreed. About three weeks later he returned to Dr. Rogers’s office and invited Jesus Christ to be his Savior and Lord.

A man might be convinced that he’s being very sincere in his search for God, but until he humbles himself, he will never find Him.

WOODY WEDNESDAY Review of Woody Allen’s latest movie “Blue Jasmine” Part 24

Review of Woody Allen’s latest movie “Blue Jasmine” Part 24

I have spent alot of time talking about Woody Allen films on this blog and looking at his worldview. He has a hopeless, meaningless, nihilistic worldview that believes we are going to turn to dust and there is no afterlife. Even though he has this view he has taken the opportunity to look at the weaknesses of his own secular view. I salute him for doing that. That is why I have returned to his work over and over and presented my own Christian worldview as an alternative.

My interest in Woody Allen is so great that I have a “Woody Wednesday” on my blog www.thedailyhatch.org every week. Also I have done over 30 posts on the historical characters mentioned in his film “Midnight in Paris.” (Salvador Dali, Ernest Hemingway,T.S.Elliot,  Cole Porter,Paul Gauguin,  Luis Bunuel, and Pablo Picasso were just a few of the characters.)

Today we are looking at a review of Woody Allen’s latest movie Blue Jasmine.

“Blue Jasmine” review: Blanchett comes undone brilliantly

You can be forgiven if at first you believe the well-dressed woman bending the ear of her neighbor on a plane, then through the terminal, then into baggage claim, is just a rank narcissist.

“TMI! Too much information!” you think on behalf of the courteous listener as Jasmine recounts how she fell for her husband, Hal, to the romantic strains of “Blue Moon.”

In “Blue Jasmine,” Woody Allen’s latest timely and prickly drama, Jasmine is so much more than mere egotist. As inhabited to the core by Cate Blanchett, she represents denial and complicity, shame and haughtiness and fear — unbridled, whinnying fear.

That’s for starters.

Quite a bit has already been written about Blanchett’s performance catapulting Jasmine into the pantheon of Allen’s most indelible female characters. And as the unraveling wife of a disgraced financier (Alec Baldwin), the Australian actress has become front-runner in the very early legs of the race for Oscar.

“Blue Jasmine” also lands high on Allen’s list of telling ethics tales: It is not as complete as “Crimes and Misdemeanors” and arguably not as nuanced as “Match Point.”

Jasmine will repeat the story of her fateful love affair again and again once she arrives, designer hat in bejeweled hand, at her sister’s modest apartment in San Francisco.

Jasmine resembles one of those ’50s wives — widowed or dumped — who find themselves with nary a skill to survive, or at least not in the manner they’d grown accustomed.

Sally Hawkins portrays Jasmine’s only sibling. Divorced, Ginger lives with her two young sons. A supermarket worker, she dates Chili (Bobby Cannavale). She’s kindly, if cowed, in her big sister’s presence.

In moving back and forth between New York and San Francisco — before the debacle that robbed Jasmine of her status and after — Allen fills in the parts Jasmine’s ever-flowing narrative washes over.

Men are central, as rescuers true and false and companions imperfect but loyal. Peter Sarsgaard plays David, a diplomat who might just save Jasmine from her low circumstances, if not from herself.

Baldwin is near perfect as Hal. He’s a cad. He’s a charmer. Allen also gets fine turns from Andrew Dice Clay as Ginger’s ex, Augie, and comic Louis C.K. as Al, the man Ginger could see herself trading up for.
