Newsmaker Interview with Surgeon General C. Everett Koop

Published on Feb 25, 2013

The PBS NewsHour interviewed former Surgeon General, Dr. C. Everett Koop, on the anniversary of the first surgeon general’s report on smoking. Jim Lehrer interviewed Koop for a newsmaker conversation for the The MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour from the surgeon general’s office in Washington on Jan. 11, 1989. Koop died Monday at the age of 96.

Dr. C. Everett Koop was appointed to the Reagan administration but was held up in the Senate in his confirmation hearings by Ted Kennedy because of his work in pro-life causes.

On 2-25-13 we lost a great man when we lost Dr. C. Everett Koop. I have written over and over the last few years quoting Dr. C. Everett Koop and his good friend Francis Schaeffer. They both came together for the first time in 1973 when Dr. Koop operated on Schaeffer’s daughter and as a result they became close friends. That led to their involvement together in the book and film series “WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE HUMAN RACE?” in 1979.

In Memoriam: C. Everett Koop

March 04, 2013

Amidst all of the (entirely proper) agitation about the unusual act of resignation by Pope Benedict XVI, we should not forget another most significant passage. Dr. C. Everett Koop, known affectionately as “Chick,” went to be with his Lord February 25, 2013, at the age of 96. Our hearts go out to his family. He is survived by his wife, Cora Hogue Koop, a friend of many of ours, (his first wife, Elizabeth, predeceased him by 13 years), and by his three children, Allen, Norman and Elizabeth (his son David died tragically in a mountain-climbing accident while still in college). He has eight grandchildren as well.

Dr. Koop was a distinguished pediatric surgeon in Philadelphia at Children’s Hospital, serving as surgeon-in-chief at “CHOP” from 1946 to 1981. He was then appointed Surgeon General under President Ronald Reagan. While his confirmation hearings were long and difficult, in the end he passed rather easily, mostly because of his palpable integrity. During his eight years of public service he became a household name. Hitherto the Surgeon General was not a high-profile position. All that changed under Everett Koop.

Koop was vehemently opposed to abortion on demand. Together with Francis Schaeffer, he produced a film and a book, Whatever Happened to the Human Race? The two warned against easy abortions, euthanasia and infanticide. Considered by many to be alarmist when published, time has proven them all too realistic. Of the practice of medicine, Koop once remarked: “Perhaps more than the law, I fear the attitude of our profession in sanctioning infanticide and in moving inexorably down the road from abortion to infanticide, to the destruction of a child who is socially embarrassing, to you-name-it.” At the same time, Koop refused to use his office as a bully pulpit for the abolition of abortion.

The two campaigns which gained him renown were his outspoken drives against smoking, and against the HIV-AIDS epidemic. Of tobacco’s harm, he famously described how smoking killed 100,000 Americans each year, and how smoking a pack a day will take six years off a person’s life. For this he was fiercely opposed by the tobacco lobby. However, he stood his ground, and the number of smokers in America went from one third down to one quarter of the population. On AIDS, he was nearly alone in urging government to take a stronger stand against its ravages. It eventually came to its senses, and began to act.

Dr. Koop became a believer in Jesus Christ through the ministry of Tenth Presbyterian Church, while he was in Philadelphia. He was an elder there and great supporter of the church. He remained a staunch, Reformed evangelical throughout his life. As one might expect of a leader who had strong convictions, not everyone could agree with him or remain supportive. Many evangelicals were quite taken aback when he came out against testing for AIDS, and in favor of the use of condoms, and of sex education for children. They often forgot to read the fine print. Testing could easily ruin careers. And Koop’s first remedy against AIDS was faithfulness or abstinence. Only when a problem still remained would it be appropriate to curtail further damage with the use of contraceptives. He also angered pro-life conservatives when he found out through a careful study that properly performed abortions did not necessarily lead to mental or physical health problems for the mother, as many had loved to argue. (Needless to say, his stands on various matters do not necessarily represent any official view from Westminster Seminary.)

As a friend of mine from Tenth Presbyterian Church pointed out, busy though he was, Dr. Koop always had time for people. He was never, seemingly, in a rush to move on, but spent generous time counseling and advising whoever might ask.

In a day when so often evangelicals have become all-too-predictable, it is refreshing to remember Dr. Koop’s refusal to be co-opted by any one faction. In a day when evangelicals have very little representation in public places, it is good to remember how one man changed much of American society through his insistent pleading about threats to life and health. In a day when many figures will use just about any argument to support their cause, it is good to remember the honesty of a man who tried to be entirely fair to the views he opposed. May we see the likes of him again!

In the film series “WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE HUMAN RACE?” the arguments are presented  against abortion (Episode 1),  infanticide (Episode 2),   euthenasia (Episode 3), and then there is a discussion of the Christian versus Humanist worldview concerning the issue of “the basis for human dignity” in Episode 4 and then in the last episode a close look at the truth claims of the Bible.

In this 1979 film series they dealt with the big social issues and predicted what social problems we have in the future because of humanism. For instance, they knew that the Jack Kevorkians of the world would be coming down the pike. They predicted that there was a slippery slope from abortion to infanticide to youth euthanasia brought on by the materialistic worldview.

Dr. Francis Schaeffer – The Biblical flow of Truth & History (intro)

Francis Schaeffer pictured below:

_________________

Life without God in the picture is absurdity!!!. That was the view of King Solomon when he wrote the Book of Ecclesiastes 3000 years ago and it is the view of many of the modern philosophers today. Modern man has tried to come up with a lasting meaning for life without God in the picture (life under the sun), but it is not possible. Without the infinite-personal God of the Bible to reveal moral absolutes then man is left to embrace moral relativism. In a time plus chance universe man is reduced to a machine and can not find a place for values such as love. Both of Francis Schaeffer’s film series have tackled these subjects and he shows how this is reflected in the arts.

Here are some posts I have done on the series “HOW SHOULD WE THEN LIVE? : Francis Schaeffer’s “How should we then live?” Video and outline of episode 10 “Final Choices” episode 9 “The Age of Personal Peace and Affluence”episode 8 “The Age of Fragmentation”episode 7 “The Age of Non-Reason” episode 6 “The Scientific Age”  episode 5 “The Revolutionary Age” episode 4 “The Reformation” episode 3 “The Renaissance”episode 2 “The Middle Ages,”, and  episode 1 “The Roman Age,” .

I have discussed many subjects with my liberal friends over at the Ark Times Blog in the past and I have taken them on now on the subject of the absurdity of life without God in the picture. Most of my responses included quotes from William Lane Craig’s book THE ABSURDITY OF LIFE WITHOUT GOD.  Here is the result of one of those encounters from June of 2013:

I wrote:

Hackett evidently when I present many quotes from secularists that you look up to showing that they can not come up with any reason to believe that there is lasting meaning and there no basis for morals, you still insist there is hope for those who hold the worldview of the atheist when he or she must abandon that view to find hope for the future. Have you ever heard the song “Dust in the Wind” by the group Kansas? Kerry Livgren who wrote that song in 1978 said he realized like King Solomon that in the secular worldview reduces man to just “dust in the wind.” Both Kerry and fellow band member Dave Hope then put their faith in Christ in 1980 and have been serving Christ ever since.

________________
Just today I saw the 1978 movie “Interiors” by Woody Allen and the character Ronata (played by Diane Keaton) probed the question “Does life lose all of it’s meaning in the face of death and she said the argument from the Book of Ecclesiastes was quite convincing.William Lane Craig noted:
“Who am I?” he asks. “Why am I here? Where am I going?” Since the Enlightenment, when modern man threw off the shackles of religion, he has tried to answer these questions without reference to God. But the answers that have come back were not exhilarating, but dark and terrible. “You are the accidental by-product of nature, a result of matter plus time plus chance. There is no reason for your existence. All you face is death.”Modern man thought that when he had gotten rid of God, he had freed himself from all that repressed and stifled him. Instead, he discovered that in killing God, he had only succeeded in orphaning himself.

For if there is no God, then man’s life becomes absurd.

If God does not exist, then both man and the universe are inevitably doomed to death. Man, like all biological organisms, must die. With no hope of immortality, man’s life leads only to the grave. His life is but a spark in the infinite blackness, a spark that appears, flickers, and dies forever. Compared to the infinite stretch of time, the span of man’s life is but an infinitesimal moment; and yet this is all the life he will ever know. Therefore, everyone must come face to face with what theologian Paul Tillich has called “the threat of non-being.” For though I know now that I exist, that I am alive, I also know that someday I will no longer exist, that I will no longer be, that I will die. This thought is staggering and threaten-ing: to think that the person I call “myself” will cease to exist, that I will be no more!

I remember vividly the first time my father told me that someday I would die. Somehow, as a child, the thought had just never occurred to me. When he told me, I was filled with fear and unbearable sadness. And though he tried repeatedly to reassure me that this was a long way off, that did not seem to matter. Whether sooner or later, the undeniable fact was that I would die and be no more, and the thought overwhelmed me. Eventually, like all of us, I grew to simply accept the fact. We all learn to live with the inevitable. But the child’s insight remains true. As the French existentialist Jean-Paul Sartre observed, several hours or several years make no difference once you have lost eternity.

Whether it comes sooner or later, the prospect of death and the threat of non-being is a terrible horror. I met a student once who did not feel this threat. He said he had been raised on the farm and was used to seeing the animals being born and dying. Death was for him simply natural—a part of life, so to speak. I was puzzled by how different our two perspectives on death were and found it difficult to understand why he did not feel the threat of non-being. Years later, I think I found my answer in reading Sartre. Sartre observed that death is not threatening so long as we view it as the death of the other, from a third-person standpoint, so to speak. It is only when we internalize it and look at it from the first-person perspective—”my death: I am going to die”—that the threat of non-being be-comes real. As Sartre points out, many people never assume this first-person perspective in the midst of life; one can even look at one’s own death from the third-person standpoint, as if it were the death of another or even of an animal, as did my friend. But the true existential significance of my death can only be appreciated from the first-person perspective, as I realize that I am going to die and forever cease to exist.

The Scientific Age

Dr. Schaeffer’s sweeping epic on the rise and decline of Western thought and Culture

_______________________

I love the works of Francis Schaeffer and I have been on the internet reading several blogs that talk about Schaeffer’s work and the work below with all the links to Schaeffer’s works from Tim Challies’ blog was really helpful. Schaeffer’s film series “How should we then live?  Wikipedia notes, “According to Schaeffer, How Should We Then Live traces Western history from Ancient Rome until the time of writing (1976) along three lines: the philosophic, scientific, and religious.[3] He also makes extensive references to art and architecture as a means of showing how these movements reflected changing patterns of thought through time. Schaeffer’s central premise is: when we base society on the Bible, on the infinite-personal God who is there and has spoken,[4] this provides an absolute by which we can conduct our lives and by which we can judge society.  Here are some posts I have done on this series: Francis Schaeffer’s “How should we then live?” Video and outline of episode 10 “Final Choices” episode 9 “The Age of Personal Peace and Affluence”episode 8 “The Age of Fragmentation”episode 7 “The Age of Non-Reason” episode 6 “The Scientific Age”  episode 5 “The Revolutionary Age” episode 4 “The Reformation” episode 3 “The Renaissance”episode 2 “The Middle Ages,”, and  episode 1 “The Roman Age,” .

In the film series “WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE HUMAN RACE?” the arguments are presented  against abortion (Episode 1),  infanticide (Episode 2),   euthanasia (Episode 3), and then there is a discussion of the Christian versus Humanist worldview concerning the issue of “the basis for human dignity” in Episode 4 and then in the last episode a close look at the truth claims of the Bible.

Today we celebrate the 100th birthday of Francis Schaeffer, the 20th century American pastor, theologian, and philosopher. Udo Middleman, President of The Francis A. Schaeffer Foundation, describes him as one who “communicated the truth of historic Biblical Christianity in a way that combined intellectual integrity, artistic sensitivity and a practical loving care. With a sharpened analytical mind he understood and uncovered the roots of modern thinking and its logical conclusion across a wide range of disciplines.”

Schaeffer wrote 22 books in his lifetime (1912-1984). It is a testimony to the worth of his thinking and writing that almost every one of these books is still individually available in print.

Below is a list of his five bestselling titles on Amazon, as well as some additional resources.

Bestselling Books

  1. How Should We Then Live? – This one has a 5-hour corresponding DVD.
  2. Art and the Bible
  3. The Francis A. Schaeffer Trilogy – Includes the books The God Who Is There, Escape from Reason, and He Is There and He Is Not Silent.
  4. True Spirituality
  5. Genesis in Space and Time

For the most value, you can get all 22 of his books in The Complete Works of Francis A. Schaeffer for less than $100. (See also the great deals Crossway has on some of his works.)

Dear Mr. President,

I know that you receive 20,000 letters a day and that you actually read 10 of them every day. I really do respect you for trying to get a pulse on what is going on out here.

I truly believe that many of the problems we have today in the USA are due to the advancement of humanism in the last few decades in our society. Ronald Reagan appointed the evangelical Dr. C. Everett Koop to the position of Surgeon General in his administration. He partnered with Dr. Francis Schaeffer in making the video below. It is very valuable information for Christians to have.  Actually I have included a video below that includes comments from him on this subject.

Turning back to God may be the only hope for America.

Is It Too Late For America?

taken from a message given by Adrian Rogers

Have we already crossed the point of no return? Will the American dream, placed in the bosom of our forefathers, become a national nightmare? This wonderful nation, born in 1776, must be born again or we will join the graveyard of nations.

Many can remember a time in America when pregnancy outside marriage was a scandal, homosexuality a sin, pornography a moral sickness, child abuse was rare, marriage was sacred, and “living together” was shameful. In public schools our students were allowed to pray and the Ten Commandments were posted on the walls.

But a proud nation, wallowing in materialism, rotting in sin, searching for what we call pleasure and freedom, has insulted the Almighty.

Those who preach the Word of God are shunned and laughed at today. If a reporter were to read this, he would call it “extreme right-wing rhetoric.” The matter is not right or left; the matter is right or wrong. And God’s Word is right.

I don’t speak as a pessimist, but I tell you this much: America must turn to God or she will die. We’re ready for judgment, but we need mercy. What does the Word of God say? There is hope for America in this promise from His Word:

If My people who are called by My name shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from Heaven, and forgive their sin and heal their land. (2 Chronicles 7:14)

“If My people”

This promise rests upon what God’s people do. We err when we lament, “O, if only Hollywood…if the government would…if pornographers would go out of business…if abortionists would stop….” But God doesn’t look to them. He’s looking at us, His people! He’s looking at you. We’re to humble ourselves, pray, and repent. Are you one of His people? Then stop putting the blame on anyone else. If America falls, it will be our fault—the fault of God’s people.

You say, “If only God would….” Is God to blame for the mess we’re in? No. “For the time has come that judgment must begin at the house of God” (1 Peter 4:17). The church must start at its back door. The hope of America is not in the White House, State House, or school house—it’s in God’s house and in God’s people.

“…shall humble themselves…”

Today in America we reek with pride. Pride is #1 on God’s hate parade. “These six things doth the Lord hate; yea, seven are an abomination unto Him” (Proverbs 6:16), and first on the list is pride. Pride is behind every sin. We don’t pray—we reek with humanistic haughtiness. We strut in the face of God. God cannot bless you as an individual or us as a nation when we have such pride. We’re to humble ourselves.

…Wherefore He saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace to the humble. (James 4:6)

Think about that: God resisting you, God resisting America. God setting Himself in battle array against us! But He gives grace to the humble.” America needs His grace. But first we must humble ourselves.

“…and pray…”

Praying for AmericaWe cry “O, God! Do something!” Beloved, God is doing something. God is judging this nation. God doesn’t hear every prayer—He sets stipulations: “…pray, seek My face, turn from your wicked ways.”

We say, “God is our only hope,” but—and this may shock you—God is also our biggest threat. I’m not as afraid of what some terrorist may do to America as I am of what God may do to America. He is a God of holiness, and He will judge us.

“…turn from their wicked ways…”

Prayer without repentance angers God. Are we really going to sing “God Bless America” while we’re killing little babies, sodomy struts down main streets with pride, and God is cursed, maligned, and cannot be mentioned in our public concourse? Why should God bless America?

Here Is the Call: Pray. Seek My Face. Repent.

I don’t know if we’ve crossed God’s deadline or not. But if there were ever a time we need to repent, this is the time, this is the day, this is the age. He would rather pardon than judge. Let us set our hearts to seek God. May He have mercy upon America, and may America bless God.

“Schaeffer Sunday” Schaeffer: if you hold life is meaningless then live that way

Schaeffer disproves that life is meaningles and there are no answers in this simple essay below.

The Shelter – A Francis A. Schaeffer Site

If a man held that everything is meaningless, nothing has answers and there is no cause-and-effect relationship, and if he really held this position with any consistency, it would be very hard to refute. But in fact, no one can hold consistently that everything is chaotic and irrational and that there are no basic answers. It can be held theoretically, but it cannot be held in practice that everything is absolute chaos.

The first reason the irrational position cannot be held consistently in practice is the fact that the external world is there and it has form and order. It is not a chaotic world. If it were true that all is chaotic, unrelated, and absurd, science as well as general life would come to an end. To live at all is not possible except in the understanding that the universe that is there — the external universe — has a certain form, a certain order, and that man conforms to that order and so can live within it.

Perhaps you remember one of Godard’s movies, Pierrot le Fou, in which he has people going out through the windows, instead of through the doors. But the interesting thing is that they do not go out through the solid wall. Godard is really saying that although he has no answer, yet at the same time he cannot go out through that solid wall. This is merely his expression of the difficulty of holding that there is a totally chaotic universe while the external world has form and order.

Sometimes people try to bring in a little bit of order; but as soon as you bring in a little bit of order, the first class of answer — that everything is meaningless, everything is irrational — is no longer self-consistent and falls to the ground.

The view that everything is chaotic and there are no ultimate answers is held by many thinking people today, but in my experience they always hold it very selectively. Almost without exception (actually, I have never found an exception), they discuss rationally until they are losing the discussion, and then they try to slip over into the answer of irrationality. But as soon as the one we are discussing with does that, we must point out to him that as soon as he becomes selective in his argument of irrationality he makes his whole argument suspect. Theoretically the position of irrationalism can be held, but no one lives with it in regard either to the external world or the categories of his own thought world and discussion. As a matter of fact, if this position were argued properly, all discussion would come to an end. Communication would end. We would have only a series of meaningless sounds — blah, blah, blah. The Theatre of the Absurd has said this, but it fails, because if you read and listen carefully to the Theatre of the Absurd, it is always trying to communicate its view that one cannot communicate. There is always a communication about the statement that there is no communication. It is always selective, with pockets of order brought in somewhere along the line. Thus we see that this class of answer — that all things are irrational — is not an answer.

C. Everett Koop on being Surgeon General

Uploaded on Nov 3, 2008

Dr. Koop shares his journey to becoming Surgeon General in Part 1 of this interview at Wheaton College, IL. http://www.christianethics.org

Dr.Koop

On 2-25-13 we lost a great man when we lost Dr. C. Everett Koop. I have written over and over the last few years quoting Dr. C. Everett Koop and his good friend Francis Schaeffer. They both came together for the first time in 1973 when Dr. Koop operated on Schaeffer’s daughter and as a result they became close friends. That led to their involvement together in the book and film series “WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE HUMAN RACE?” in 1979. This film has influenced a lot of people and that includes Ron Paul.

Ron Paul’s Anti-Abortion Position

Paul Pro-LifeThere was a link on Facebook to the following post on the RonPaul2012 website with the title “Reagan’s Surgeon General C. Everett Koop on Ron Paul’s Pro-Life Credentials.” It includes the following: “Paul’s first book written in 1983 was titled Abortion and Liberty. The foreword was written by C. Everett Koop, the pro-life Surgeon General appointed by Ronald Reagan.”

Using Dr. Koop’s 1983 endorsement is a reminder that when some conservatives get into office, they compromise. Dr. Koop had impeccable pro-life credentials before he became Ronald Reagan’s choice for Surgeon General. There was great pressure on Reagan from Evangelicals to nominate Dr. Koop because they had voted for the president in record numbers. Based on the following, Dr. Koop’s endorsement does not mean that much to me.

Dr. Koop was the co-author with Christian apologist and “guru of fundamentalism” (as Newsweek described him in 1982) Francis A. Schaeffer[1] of Whatever Happened to the Human Race? After a contentious confirmation hearing, Dr. Koop became Surgeon General under Ronald Reagan. Liberals attacked him because of his anti-abortion stance and his relationship with Schaeffer. “The nomination was held up for more than eight months. Only after Dr. Koop promised to abandon the antiabortion circuit and to refrain from using the Surgeon General’s office as a pulpit for his right-to-life beliefs did the Senate finally vote its approval.”[2]

Under questioning, Koop admitted that as Surgeon General, he would recommend abortion as one way of dealing with the unborn children of mothers with AIDS. By the spring of 1987, Koop was self-consciously in retreat from his earlier Christian position. With respect to abortion, he commented, “I’ve written all that I have to write on that issue. There are other, bigger things that I should turn my attention to as surgeon general: Where this country is and where it’s going in health care.”[3]

In 1986 and 1987, Koop officially called for sex education on AIDS in the public schools as early as kindergarten and for public school instruction on how to use condoms. Homosexuality had become a politically protected lifestyle. “I am the surgeon general of the heterosexuals and the homosexuals,” Koop argued, “of the young and the old, of the moral and the immoral, the married and the unmarried. I don’t have the luxury of deciding which side I want to be on.”[4] He had retreated to what Schaeffer called “the line of despair.”[5]

This so-called neutral moral position cost people their lives. Koop should have come out denouncing the behaviors that were causing AIDS. He did it with smoking. Why was “safe sodomy” an option but not safe smoking? Cigarette smoking kills, the government was telling everyone. Laws had been passed to make it increasingly more difficult for people to smoke in public buildings. Tobacco products are heavily taxed. Do we find the following on cigarette packs? “Caution: Cigarette smoking may be hazardous to your health. . . . So be sure to use a filter if you decide to smoke.” Koop was calling for condoms (filters) to help curtail the transmission of AIDS instead of denouncing the behavior that was spreading AIDS.

There is a related issue on Ron Paul changing his position on a federal prohibition of abortion. One of the reasons many Christians will not vote for Ron Paul is because he has taken a “states rights” position on abortion. While he calls for “preventing activist judges from interfering with state decisions on life by removing abortion from federal court jurisdiction through legislation modeled after his ‘We the People Act,’” he seems to have taken the position that states should be free either to outlaw or legalize abortion. They get it from a statement like this one:

Under the 9th and 10th amendments, all authority over matters not specifically addressed in the Constitution remains with state legislatures. Therefore the federal government has no authority whatsoever to involve itself in the abortion issue. So while Roe v. Wade is invalid, a federal law banning abortion across all 50 states would be equally invalid.

This is troubling for a lot of people. Would he say the same thing about slavery or involuntary euthanasia at the state level? Paul writes that there is a “God-given right to life — for those born and unborn.” Consider these words from Paul’s website:

After being forced to witness an abortion being performed during his time in medical school, he knew from that moment on that his practice would focus on protecting life. And during his years in medicine, never once did he find an abortion necessary to save the life of a pregnant woman.

Paul is correct that the Constitution does not deal with moral issues like rape, abortion, or even murder of adults. But if states started killing children or adults or permitted the rape of women for what were believed to be state-sanctioned reasons, would these be actions for a higher (federal) government to outlaw? I’d be interested in hearing what Dr. Paul’s answer since he argues that pre-born children are equal to born children.

What’s interesting is that Paul’s book Abortion and Liberty seems to advocate a federal solution. Here’s what he wrote on pages 34 and 35:

Senator Jesse Helms [1921-2008] has written and introduced a Human Life Amendment. He contends that: “A constitutional amendment must be worded, like the Constitution itself, in terms of general principles.”

Conforming to this, the amendment he wrote is brief and general in nature:

“The paramount right to life is vested in each human being from the moment of fertilization without regard to age, health, or condition of dependency.”

A Constitutional provision should never have been necessary, but now it is. Without this change in the Constitution, the division and dissension in the country over abortion will get worse. . . . We cannot deny constitutional protection to the unborn, but we should not be complacent and think that this in itself solves the problem. The problem is fundamentally moral, not legal. The Constitution by itself cannot establish the proper moral attitude of a nation. The real change will not be achieved by the politicians, but must come from our moral and religious philosophers.

Something has changed with Dr. Paul on the abortion issue since he wrote these words. If he returned to this very reasonable view, he would see his support rise among Evangelicals. He might even get the nomination.

Dr. Schaeffer’s sweeping epic on the rise and decline of Western thought and Culture

Hackett you said that I have despair and that despair requires faith and belief, I would like to make it clear that I do not have despair because I know where I am going and I have good historical evidence that backs up my Christian worldview.

The ironic thing is that eveout bough you make that accusation to me it is your secularist views that must be based on “unyielding despair” as Bertrand Russell pointed. William Lane Craig takes that issue and runs with it:

——–
About the only solution the atheist can offer is that we face the absurdity of life and live bravely. Bertrand Russell, for example, wrote that we must build our lives upon “the firm foundation of unyielding despair.”16 Only by recognizing that the world really is a terrible place can we successfully come to terms with life. Camus said that we should honestly recognize life’s absurdity and then live in love for one another.

The fundamental problem with this solution, however, is that it is impossible to live consistently and happily within such a worldview. If one lives consistently, he will not be happy; if one lives happily, it is only because he is not consistent. Francis Schaeffer has explained this point well. Modern man, says Schaeffer, resides in a two-story universe. In the lower story is the finite world without God; here life is absurd, as we have seen. In the upper story are meaning, value, and purpose. Now modern man lives in the lower story because he believes there is no God. But he cannot live happily in such an absurd world; therefore, he continually makes leaps of faith into the upper story to affirm meaning, value, and purpose, even though he has no right to, since he does not believe in God. Modern man is totally inconsistent when he makes this leap, because these values cannot exist without God, and man in his lower story does not have God.

Open letter to President Obama (Part 389) Taking on Ark Times bloggers about abortion on the 40th anniversary date of Roe v. Wade (Part 1)

(Emailed to White House on 1-23-13.)

President Obama c/o The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW
Washington, DC 20500

Dear Mr. President,

I know that you receive 20,000 letters a day and that you actually read 10 of them every day. I really do respect you for trying to get a pulse on what is going on out here.

Around 20 times I have taken time to take my family down to the March for Life in January to take up for the rights of the smallest in our country. These unborn children need us to take up for them. I know that you do not hold my same views on this but I wanted to send this you today so you will know where we are coming from. Since you are a Christian like me then we have the common ground of the Bible to discuss this issue.

Dr. C. Everett Koop is a hero of mine. He is pictured below.

Watch the film below starting at the 19 minute mark and that will lead into a powerful question from Dr. C. Everett Koop. This film is WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE HUMAN RACE? by Francis Schaeffer and Dr. C. Everett Koop.

and slavery – 10/14/2004 – part 3

At the March for Life on 1-20-13 in Little Rock  my son Wilson Hatcher got his picture taken with two of the Duggar sisters.

Over the years I have taken on the Ark Times liberal bloggers over and over and over concerning the issue of abortion. I asked over and over again for one liberal blogger to come forward and tell me when they thought an unborn baby should be protected by our government and finally I got someone to do that.

I have repeated this question over and over again like I did on January 22, 2013:

“The funny thing to me is that no liberal on this blog has the guts to tell me when unborn babies should receive the legal protection of our government. We agree it is sometime before birth but is that one minute before 9 months is up or sometime before that? Come on and tell me what you really believe. I respect honest answers but I don’t respect those too ashamed to tell me what they believe.”

OVER AND OVER AGAIN I GOT JUST ATTACKS AND NONANSWER BUT FINALLY I GOT AN ANSWER. The blogger that goes by the name “Righter” responded:

“I believe current Federal law has it about right. I might add that personally, I am opposed to abortion, however as a male it is not my decision but a gut wrenching one for a woman. Also, you are on the wrong side of history as usual as one can see from this NBC/WSJ poll realeased in the last 24 hrs.”

In response to Righter I wrote:

Righter, thank you for bravely stating your views on this blog when all these other liberals are afraid to say what they believe when I know that many of them hold the same view that you do.

Federal law allows for doctor and mother to carry out abortion as late as they want. Do you see a problem now with your view?

Righter responded, “I am not in the habit of trying to force my religious beliefs on my fellow Americans.”

The blogger that went by the name Vanessa shared:

How many times have you been pregnant?

Not all ‘life’ is sacred. But by golly, it’s the only way you can control the womenfolk, now, isn’t it?

Me and the spousal unit are raising our 12 yr old grandson. When I was 12 women/girls were required to wear dresses to school and were legally denied opportunities like becoming an astronaut.

I got knocked up 39 years ago and my mother said she would support any choice I made. She’s 38 now, and still one of the state’s best and brightest.

Where are all the women who chose abortion and now regret it enough to stand up and say this is what I did and I want to take that choice away from you? I don’t see them lining up anywhere to proclaim their mistakes in hopes of putting the rest of us on the right path. And where is the effort to provide women with reliable birth control so that there are fewer unplanned pregnancies? If it was really about limiting abortion there would be a greater effort to provide birth control. But that’s not what it’s about, is it?

ANd for that matter where are all the baby daddies claiming responsibility for the results of spreading their sperm around? Paternity can be determined in utero these days, but I don’t see them lining up either.

It’s about control. Women aren’t supposed to like/enjoy sex. Eve took that apple and it’s all her fault that there is pain in childbirth, right? Gotta punish them loose women, now doncha?

An effort to make men responsible for the babies they make would go much father in preventing abortions than all your cheesy poetry, but you seem to want to leave that out of the equation.

I responded, “Vanessa thanks for sharIng about your courageous decision of choosing life and I know you have regretted it. It’s a child not a choice is what I like to say.”

_______________

Science Matters: Former supermodel Kathy Ireland tells Mike Huckabee about how she became pro-life after reading what the science books have to say.

My good friend Dr. Kevin R. Henke is a scientist and also an atheistic evolutionist. I had a lot of discussions with Kevin over religious views. I remember going over John 7:17 with him one day. It says:

John 7:17 (Amplified Bible)

17If any man desires to do His will (God’s pleasure), he will know (have the needed illumination to recognize, and can tell for himself) whether the teaching is from God or whether I am speaking from Myself and of My own accord and on My own authority.

I challenged Kevin to read a chapter a day of the Book of John and pray to God and ask God, “Dear God, if you are there then reveal yourself to me, and I pledge to serve you the rest of my life.”

Kevin did that and he even wrote down the thoughts that came to his mind and sent it to me and these thoughts filled a notebook.

Kevin did not become a Christian, but I am still praying for him. I do respect Kevin because he is an honest man. Interestingly enough he  told me that he was pro-life because the unborn baby has all the genetic code at  the time of conception that they will have for the rest of their life. Below are some other comments by other scientists:

Dr. Hymie Gordon (Mayo Clinic): “By all criteria of modern molecular biology, life is present from the moment of conception.”

Dr. Micheline Matthews-Roth (Harvard University Medical School): “It is scientifically correct to say that an individual human life begins at conception.”

Dr. Alfred Bongioanni (University of Pennsylvania): “I have learned from my earliest medical education that human life begins at the time of conception.”

Dr. Jerome LeJeune, “the Father of Modern Genetics” (University of Descartes, Paris): “To accept the fact that after fertilization has taken place a new human has come into being is no longer a matter of taste or opinion . . . it is plain experimental evidence.”

Back on April 27, 2009 Fox News ran a story by Hollie McKay(Supermodel Kathy Ireland Lashes Out Against Pro Choice,”) on Jill Ireland.

It’s no secret that the majority of Hollywood stars are strong advocates for a woman’s right to choose whether or not she wants to terminate a pregnancy, however former “Sports Illustrated” supermodel-turned-entrepreneur-turned-author Kathy Ireland has gone against the grain of the glitterati and spoken out against abortion.

“My entire life I was pro-choice — who was I to tell another woman what she could or couldn’t do with her body? But when I was 18, I became a Christian and I dove into the medical books, I dove into science,” Ireland told Tarts while promoting her insightful new book “Real Solutions for Busy Mom: Your Guide to Success and Sanity.”

“What I read was astounding and I learned that at the moment of conception a new life comes into being. The complete genetic blueprint is there, the DNA is determined, the blood type is determined, the sex is determined, the unique set of fingerprints that nobody has had or ever will have is already there.”

However Ireland admitted that she did everything she could to avoid becoming a believer in pro-life.

“I called Planned Parenthood and begged them to give me their best argument and all they could come up with that it is really just a clump of cells and if you get it early enough it doesn’t even look like a baby. Well, we’re all clumps of cells and the unborn does not look like a baby the same way the baby does not look like a teenager, a teenager does not look like a senior citizen. That unborn baby looks exactly the way human beings are supposed to look at that stage of development. It doesn’t suddenly become a human being at a certain point in time,” Ireland argued. “I’ve also asked leading scientists across our country to please show me some shred of evidence that the unborn is not a human being. I didn’t want to be pro-life, but this is not a woman’s rights issue but a human rights issue.”

A Biblical argument for life beginning at conception from Psalms 139 from Kerby Anderson of Probe Ministries:

One of the key verses to understand in developing a biblical view of the sanctity of human life is Psalm 139. This psalm is the inspired record of David’s praise for God’s sovereignty in his life. He begins by acknowledging that God is omniscient and knows what David is doing at any given point in time. He goes on to acknowledge that God is aware of David’s thoughts before he expresses them. David adds that wherever he might go, he cannot escape from God, whether he travels to heaven or ventures into Sheol. God is in the remotest part of the sea and even in the darkness. Finally David contemplates the origin of his life and confesses that God was there forming him in the womb:

For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be (vv. 13-16).

Here David speaks of God’s relationship with him while he was growing and developing before birth. Notice that the Bible doesn’t speak of fetal life as mere biochemistry. The description here is not of a piece of protoplasm that becomes David: this is David already being cared for by God while in the womb.

In verse 13, we see that God is the Master Craftsman fashioning David into a living person. In verses 14 and 15, David reflects on the fact that he is a product of God’s creative work within his mother’s womb, and he praises God for how wonderfully God has woven him together.

David draws a parallel between his development in the womb and Adam’s creation from the earth. Using figurative language in verse 15, he refers to his life before birth when “I was made in secret, and skillfully wrought in the depths of the earth.” This poetic allusion harkens back to Genesis 2:7 which says that Adam was made from the dust of the earth.

David also notes that “Thine eyes have seen my unformed substance.” This shows that God knew David even before he was known to others. The term translated unformed substance is a noun derivative of a verb meaning “to roll up.” When David was just forming as a fetus, God’s care and compassion already extended to him. The reference to “God’s eyes” is an Old Testament term used to connotate divine oversight of God in the life of an individual or group of people.

Thank you so much for your time. I know how valuable it is. I also appreciate the fine family that you have and your commitment as a father and a husband.

Sincerely,

Everette Hatcher III, 13900 Cottontail Lane, Alexander, AR 72002, ph 501-920-5733, lowcostsqueegees@yahoo.com

How Should We Then Live? Episode 5: The Revolutionary Age

Dr. Schaeffer’s sweeping epic on the rise and decline of Western thought and Culture

_______________________

I love the works of Francis Schaeffer and I have been on the internet reading several blogs that talk about Schaeffer’s work and the work below posted by Peter Cockrell was really helpful. Here are some posts I have done on this series: Francis Schaeffer’s “How should we then live?” Video and outline of episode 10 “Final Choices” , episode 9 “The Age of Personal Peace and Affluence”, episode 8 “The Age of Fragmentation”, episode 7 “The Age of Non-Reason” , episode 6 “The Scientific Age”  episode 5 “The Revolutionary Age” , episode 4 “The Reformation” episode 3 “The Renaissance”, episode 2 “The Middle Ages,”, and  episode 1 “The Roman Age,” .

Countercultural Spirituality

url

Ray Ortlund:

As the latest volume in the new Crossway series, Theologians on The Christian Life, William Edgar’s Schaeffer on The Christian Life compels my respectful attention.  The subtitle, in particular, “Countercultural Spirituality,” combines two things attractive to me, true to Francis Schaeffer and prophetic in our time.

Countercultural.  Counter, especially, to a compromised church culture.  Biblical Christianity is a radical adjustment.  We would gain immeasurably from being confronted, even opposed, by the biblical witness.  Our gracious Justifier, who is for us (Romans 8:31), also says to us, “But I have a few things against you” (Revelation 2:14).  Are we willing to face that honestly and find out what he means and receive his correction?

Spirituality.  Personal reality with the living God, according to Scripture.  The Bible is not there for us to polish our theories.  It is not there to reinforce any status quo.  It is there to bring us to God and move us to deeper change and empower us for bold witness in our generation.  This is the rugged, costly spirituality nothing on earth, nothing within the church, can withstand, because God is in it.

Schaeffer: “The central problem of our age is not liberalism or modernism [or postmodernism] . . . . The real problem is this: the church of the Lord Jesus Christ, individually or corporately, tending to do the Lord’s work in the power of the flesh rather than of the Spirit.  The central problem is always in the midst of the people of God, not in the circumstances surrounding them” (page 148, italics original).

Such a stance lifts this book above merely speculative interest, thought-provoking though it is.  The entire outlook of Francis Schaeffer, well summarized on pages 189-192, demands personal and corporate reassessment at a basic level.

I needed to read this book.  Maybe you do too.

“Schaeffer Sundays” Francis Schaeffer’s own words concerning our view of acceptable killing versus Stalin, Mao and Hitler

Francis Schaeffer: “Whatever Happened to the Human Race” (Episode 3) DEATH BY SOMEONE’S CHOICE

Published on Oct 6, 2012 by

_________

The 45 minute video above is from the film series created from Francis Schaeffer’s book “Whatever Happened to the Human Race?” with Dr. C. Everett Koop. This book  really helped develop my political views concerning abortion, infanticide, and youth euthanasia, and it gave me a good understanding of those issues.

I was able to watch Francis Schaeffer deliver a speech on a book he wrote called “A Christian Manifesto” and I heard him in several interviews on it in 1981 and 1982. I listened with great interest since I also read that book over and over again. Below is a portion of one of Schaeffer’s talks  on a crucial subject that is very important today too.

A Christian Manifesto
by Dr. Francis A. Schaeffer
This address was delivered by the late Dr. Schaeffer in 1982 at the Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church, Fort Lauderdale, Florida. It is based on one of his books, which bears the same title.
Stalin,Mao,and Hitler versus our  view in the USA today of acceptable killing

NEWSWEEK January 11 1982 HOW LIFE BEGINS THE BOMB CLAY

—–

The January 11 Newsweek has an article about the baby in the womb. The first 5 or 6 pages are marvelous. If you haven’t seen it, you should see if you can get that issue. It’s January 11 and about the first 5 or 6 pages show conclusively what every biologist has known all along, and that is that human life begins at conception. There is no other time for human life to begin, except at conception. Monkey life begins at conception. Donkey life begins at conception. And human life begins at conception. Biologically, there is no discussion — never should have been — from a scientific viewpoint. I am not speaking of religion now. And this 5 or 6 pages very carefully goes into the fact that human life begins at conception. But you flip the page and there is this big black headline, “But is it a person?” And I’ll read the last sentence, “The problem is not determining when actual human life begins, but when the value of that life begins to out weigh other considerations, such as the health or even the happiness of the mother.”
We are not just talking about the health of the mother (it’s a propaganda line), or even the happiness of the mother. Listen! Spell that out! It means that the mother, for her own hedonistic happiness — selfish happiness — can take human life by her choice, by law. Do you understand what I have said? By law, on the basis of her individual choice of what makes her happy. She can take what has been declared to be, in the first five pages [of the article], without any question, human life. In other words, they acknowledge that human life is there, but it is an open question as to whether it is not right to kill that human life if it makes the mother happy.
And basically that is no different than Stalin, Mao, or Hitler, killing who they killed for what they conceived to be the good of society. There is absolutely no line between the two statements — no absolute line, whatsoever. One follows along: Once that it is acknowledged that it is human life that is involved (and as I said, this issue of Newsweek shows conclusively that it is) the acceptance of death of human life in babies born or unborn, opens the door to the arbitrary taking of any human life. From then on, it’s purely arbitrary.
It was this view that opened the door to all that followed in Germany prior to Hitler. It’s an interesting fact here that the only Supreme Court in the Western World that has ruled against easy abortion is the West German Court. The reason they did it is because they knew, and it’s clear history, that this view of human life in the medical profession and the legal profession combined, before Hitler came on the scene, is what opened the way for everything that happened in Hitler’s Germany. And so, the German Supreme Court has voted against easy abortion because they know — they know very well where it leads.
