Another fine message by Adrian Rogers.

The Leadership Crisis in America, Part 1

Adrian Rogers

“When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn.”  Proverbs 29:2

In this or any country, leadership is crucial. There is a proverb — not a biblical proverb, but a wonderful one — that asks, “If the gold rusts, what shall the iron do?” That is, if our leadership is not what it ought to be, what will the people be like?

In this first of a two-part article, we’re going to discuss the character God requires of leaders.

As a general rule, we get the kind of leadership we deserve. God is greatly interested in a nation’s political life. Some think He ought to stay out of government, but the truth is, government must always look to Almighty God.

In November, Americans are going to vote. Voting is a privilege, but for the Christian, it’s more than that — it’s a duty. If you willingly do not vote, you disobey God, for Jesus said, “Render unto Caesar [the government] the things that are Caesar’s and unto God, the things that are God’s.” In America, “Caesar” is the “government of, by, and for the people.” To fail to participate is to sin against Almighty God. It’s unthinkable that God would have ordained government, then told His people to stay out of it.

A Christian Voter’s Guide

One of the most frightening things I’ve heard people say is, “What difference does character make as long as a person can lead? Who cares about the character of an airplane pilot as long as he can fly the plane?” Friend, there’s a fatal flaw in that. When you say character doesn’t count, you’re really saying God doesn’t count. Character is rooted in God’s principles. You’re saying, “God, we can get along quite well without Your blessing. We’re going to do it ourselves.” If only skill counts, what would you think of a surgeon who failed to scrub before performing surgery? He may be skilled, but he will contaminate whatever he touches. So will the leader without character.

Straight from God’s Word, here are the principles God says a leader should have. It‘s important to get these fixed in your heart and mind.

1. Godly and righteous
“Kings of the earth and all people, princes and all judges of the earth, both young men and maidens, old men and children, let them praise the name of the Lord. For His name alone is excellent, His glory is above the earth and heaven.” Psalm 148:11-12

Every earthly ruler should be one who worships God. “It is an abomination to kings to commit wickedness, for the throne is established by righteousness.” (Proverbs 16:12) What is a throne established by? Righteousness. An ungodly, immoral man is unfit for leadership.

2. Wise (and true wisdom comes from godliness)
“I, wisdom, dwell with prudence, and find out knowledge of witty inventions. The fear of the Lord is to hate evil: pride, and arrogance, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate. Counsel is mine, and sound wisdom: I am understanding; I have strength. By me kings reign, and princes decree justice. By me princes rule, and nobles, even all the judges of the earth.” Proverbs 8:12-16

Which is more important…for a leader to be smart or be wise? How much better one who is wise rather than just smart!  When God offered to give Solomon anything he wanted, Solomon was wise enough to ask for wisdom. Wisdom is the gift of God. I pray God will give America wise leaders. But a leader cannot have wisdom from God unless he’s under God in service and worship.

3. Honest
Excellent speech becometh not a fool, much less do lying lips a prince.Proverbs 17:7

Mercy and truth preserve the king.Proverbs 20:28

Liars and leaders are not the same. If a person doesn’t tell the truth, he has a basic character flaw and is absolutely unfit for leadership. One is not a liar because he tells lies; he tells lies because he’s a liar. And if a liar, he’s not a godly leader and should not be elected.

He cannot be a person who listens to lies, for the Bible says, “If a ruler harken to lies, all his servants are wicked” (Proverbs 29:12). Men and women with fortitude and honesty, guided by what is right, make history.

4. Discriminating in the choice of helpers
“Take away the dross from the silver and there shall come forth a vessel for the finer. Take away the wicked from before the king and his throne shall be established in righteousness.” Proverbs 25:4-5

Before making a silver vessel, you must remove the impurities from the silver ore. If a king surrounds himself with wicked people, his throne will not be established in righteousness. If a leader isn’t discriminating enough to choose the right people to accompany him and godly people to lead alongside him by, he is unfit to lead. A leader is known by his inner circle. Who were his mentors? Who are his heroes? Who are his friends?

5. Willing to protect the weak
“Open thy mouth for the dumb [unable to speak] in the cause of all such as are appointed to destruction. Open thy mouth, judge righteously, and plead the cause of the poor and needy.” (Proverbs 31:8-9)

When someone is in peril and cannot speak for themselves, the king is to speak for them. If a leader does not have a protective spirit, he’s missed the reason for being a leader. God gives us leaders to protect us from evil people. Leaders should be defenders of those who cannot defend themselves. That is particularly true of precious unborn human persons.

Are you aware that some laws are evil in the sight of God?

“Shall the throne of iniquity have fellowship with thee, which frameth mischief by a law? They gather themselves together against the soul of the righteous, and condemn the innocent blood.” (Psalm 94:20-21)

In this verse, the word “mischief” is better translated “evil.”

“Woe unto him that builds a town with blood and establishes a city by iniquity.” (Habakkuk 2:12)

In Jeremiah 22, God says through Jeremiah to the king, “If you shed innocent blood, God swears by Himself that He is going to destroy your nation.”

Some things may be legal but not right before Almighty God. Wicked people may make wicked laws, but that doesn’t make it right. And there’s nothing politically right that’s morally wrong. A leader must be one who stands up for the innocent and defenseless.

Look for a heart of compassion for the poor, needy, and the innocent who are about to be destroyed.

This is The Character God Requires.

Never be so uninformed as to say character doesn’t make a difference. You’re expecting God to bless iniquity!  He cannot and He will not. Blessed is that nation whose God is the Lord.

In Part 2 we’ll examine The Choices God Respects.

___________

WHAT DOES THIS VERSE MEAN?

“I, wisdom, dwell with prudence, and find out knowledge of witty inventions. The fear of the Lord is to hate evil: pride, and arrogance, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate. Counsel is mine, and sound wisdom: I am understanding; I have strength. By me kings reign, and princes decree justice. By me princes rule, and nobles, even all the judges of the earth.” Proverbs 8:12-16

The Secret of Satisfaction

taken from a message given by Adrian Rogers

“The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.” Psalm 23:1

None of us know what we may be facing this year.  Perhaps it is a life filled with anxiety, disappointment, worry, or grief or perhaps not. But we all know we will have difficulty. How can you get through it?

PROMISE OF PEACE

Regardless of the difficulty you may face, I want you to know that there are six verses in God’s Word that hold the key to true satisfaction.  That’s right!  Whatever struggle you’re facing right now, you can have unshakable peace and contentment by applying these six verses. Where are these verses?  Psalm 23.

You may say,  “That sounds too good to be true.  Lasting satisfaction is just another piece of religious pie-in-the-sky.”  But it’s not! There are many principles that we can learn from this incredible Psalm, but I want to share just one.

Notice that David starts off the Psalm by rejoicing, saying, “I shall not want” because “the Lord is my Shepherd.”  When you can say, “I am His and He is mine” then you will be complete.    Let me explain.

A passing hunger for prosperity, progress, or prestige only brings shallow satisfaction.  When we stuff ourselves with so many worldly snacks, we don’t have any appetite left when it is time for the real feast!

PRACTICE HIS PRESENCE

On the other hand, a deep hunger for Jesus Christ leads to a perpetual feast full of knowing Him.  And the glorious truth about feasting on the Lord is that you’ll be continually filled and satisfied!  Now that is a deep satisfaction!

So how do you feast on the Lord?  By practicing and living in His presence every moment.  Learn to realize that at each moment of every day, Jesus is always there with you–in your kitchen, your office, your car–just as He promised.  Think about Him all day!

As one poet said, “Lean thine arms upon the windowsill of heaven, and gaze into the face of thy God.  And then, with the vision full in your heart, turn to meet the day.”

And that’s what I want to encourage you to do.  Practice the presence of God.  Feast on Christ.  Wake up half an hour earlier.  Turn off the television a little sooner.  And spend time with your Shepherd.  Then look at life from His perspective all day!

PONDER THE PSALM

I believe there is no better place to start than Psalm 23.  This Psalm has been a sweet, personal blessing to me–and not only to me, but to others through the ages.  It is as sweet to the child as it is perplexing to the scholar.

I want to encourage you to read and meditate on Psalm 23 and let the Lord show you that the secret to satisfying all of your needs lies in the hands of your Shepherd.  You know, there are many people like you and me who might brush right over Psalm 23–and the glorious news of the Good Shepherd–because they think they’ve heard it all before.  And yet they continue to desperately seek satisfaction and search for happiness in life.  These things can only be fully known in a right relationship with God.

In closing, I want to encourage you to start–if you’re not already–practicing the presence of God today.  Why not begin with Psalm 23 and discover how your Shepherd can satisfy your soul.

How to Pray for America

taken from a message given by Adrian Rogers

Hands over flagThese are important days indeed—ones that need our attention and diligence. But attention and diligence in what?

The waters of allegiance to God need to be stirred. And a call to action needs to be issued with prayer as our greatest resource and God as our only true hope. What is our first step?

● Revival prayer. Only prayer can hold back the floodtide of sin and God’s judgment and release the cleansing, healing hand of God.

One illustration of God’s mercy, deliverance, and revival among His people is when Israel had been taken captive by the Babylonians (Babylon is the ancient name for Iraq). In Daniel 9, Daniel offered a prayer to God to deliver the Israelites from their captivity.

Pray with Serious Concentration

Daniel said, “And I set my face unto the Lord God, to seek by prayer and supplications, with fasting, and sackcloth, and ashes” (Daniel 9:3). To “set our face” refers to the faith and fervency of our prayers. We are to sincerely pray with every inch of our being as individuals, as a church body, even as a nation. But not just any prayer, it must be prayer and fasting.

● What is fasting?
Fasting is not merely going without food. It is not dieting or cutting down on our eating for health reasons, though we ought to do that. Fasting is going without food, water, and other pleasures for a spiritual purpose.

● Why do we fast?
We are to fast with the correct motivation unto the Lord. Matthew 6:17-18 says, “…when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face; that thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly.”

● What can fasting do?
Fasting will strengthen your prayer life and turn you to God. When we fast, we are giving Heaven notice that we are earnest about seeking God with all of our heart. Fasting also brings faith into focus and holds back God’s judgment.

Have we crossed a deadline in America? Is it too late for our nation? No, absolutely not. God is righteous and holy. He is also merciful. And He would rather show mercy than judgment. He wants to forgive. And He is willing to change His mind (see Exodus 32:14 and Psalm 106:23).

● How should we fast?
First of all, you need to pray about it. Then, prayerfully choose your fast. As I mentioned earlier, fasting can be going without food or perhaps other pleasures for a spiritual purpose.

If you have never fasted, a one-day fast is a good beginning. Plan ahead of time that you’re going to fast, and if you’re sick, on medication, or pregnant, talk to your doctor first.

Finally, remember to fast as instructed in God’s Word. Don’t boast or brag about what you’re doing or for what purpose. But at the same time, you don’t need to be ashamed of it.

Pray with Sincere Confession

Hands over flagSin brings judgment; confession brings forgiveness. Daniel confessed his personal sin and the sin of his nation in Daniel 9:4-7 and 20.

If we want to see this nation turn towards God, it is vital that each person reading this go individually before God and confess personal sin. He tells us, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9). There is no sin—none that is beyond God’s forgiveness. Every sin is covered under the blood of Jesus.

Daniel also prayed for God to forgive the sin of a nation. I call this “Identification Repentance.” Daniel identified himself with a nation and asked God to have mercy. Just as Daniel, identify with our nation and ask God to have mercy, as well, for the wicked of this nation are certainly not going to pray for themselves.

We need to confess our pride and materialism, neglect of the poor, our racism, sexual immorality, the merciless killing of the unborn, and the godless humanism that has invaded and pervaded our public schools.

Then, pray with spiritual concern that they will seek His forgiveness for themselves.

Pray with Spiritual Concern

What were Daniel’s concerns when he prayed? The removal of guilt (see Daniel 9:16) and the restoration of glory (see Daniel 9:17-19).

We need to pray for God to cleanse us and remove our guilt. Without this, we cannot expect God to bring revival. How I praise Him that with a multitude of sins, He has a multitude of mercy!

Oh, that every Christian would have a burning, yearning heart for the glory of God! I want to see God’s glory spread over this land. I want to see God do something that cannot be explained by the television pundits, news anchors and newspaper journalists. I want something that cannot be explained by technology, personality, propaganda, or persuasion.

It is prayer time in America. I want to ask you one final time—are you on praying ground? James 5:16 says: “Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.”

Prayer is our greatest resource, and God is our only true hope. Only prayer can hold back the floodtide of sin and God’s judgment and release the cleansing, healing hand of God. Will you pray?

Christian World View – Part 1

September 16 | Taken from a message by Adrian Rogers

You have probably heard of the movie, “Star Wars.” In some ways, the movie gives tacit recognition of a supreme being, but the supreme being is called “the Force.” That’s impersonal. But in the Bible, God is not the Force, God is a person who has intelligence, emotion, and will.

There are many worldviews, which are against the Truth about God. One is called atheism – there is no God. Another worldview is fatalism –everything is just going to happen and there’s nothing we can do about it. Another worldview is polytheism – that there are many gods.

You cannot hold to any of these worldviews and hold to what the Bible says is truth. Exodus 34:14 says, “For thou shalt worship no other god: for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God.”

Bring Back the Glory

taken from a message given by Adrian Rogers

Apart from Israel, no other nation has had such a Christian beginning as America. Under the blessing of God, Israel began with a glorious heritage. Like Israel of old, God’s blessing rested upon early America. In the Mayflower Compact, our Pilgrim forefathers said their express purpose for coming to these shores was to propagate the Gospel. We were founded as a Christian nation to the very core. Yet like Israel, America has not only forgotten our heritage, we’ve forgotten God and abandoned the Gospel’s influence on our national life. America has lost her glory. How did this happen? The same way it happened in Israel.

In Israel, a new generation arose which forgot their relationship with God (Judges 2:10). We have a generation today who doesn’t know the true history and spiritual heritage of our nation. Like Israel in the days of the judges, America is doing “that which was right in [its] own eyes” (Judges 17:6).

Who upholds the standards of God’s principles today? Is it Washington? No. Legalized abortion, partial-birth abortion, prohibition of prayer and the Ten Commandments in public—the legislation and pronouncements coming out of Washington would shock and grieve our forefathers.

Is society upholding godly standards? No. As we become desensitized, immoral perversions have gone from “sin” to “sickness” to stoically accepted practice. Today’s generation doesn’t know how to blush—or why!

America’s situation today parallels Israel’s in those days. So what can we do to bring the glory back to America? The following three problems that characterized Israel—and America today—must be addressed.

The Need for Gratitude

In Judges 9, Abimelech, an ungodly man, seizes power in Israel through violence and deceit and leads the nation straight into God’s judgment—amazingly just after Gideon’s great victory.

The key to Israel’s slide is found in Judges 8:33-35. As soon as Gideon was dead, the Israelites forgot the God who gave them victory and chased after other gods. An unthankful people, Israel’s ingratitude led them into apostasy. And for America, it has become a thankless nation, too. We’ve forgotten the God who made us great. We must become a thankful people again.

The Need for Godly Leaders

Israel’s “reward” for its thanklessness was Abimelech, whose arrogant reign is detailed in Judges 9. Abimelech built his administration on a godless coalition in which he bought his supporters with silver (Judges 9:2-4) and the blood of the innocent (v. 5). Many American politicians achieve office with the “silver” of campaign promises and the blood of the innocent unborn. We must elect godly leaders who have the courage to put a stop to this ungodliness.

The Need for Committed People

In Judges 9:7-15, a prophet named Jotham stood up and told a parable of the trees. All the good trees and vines were “too busy” to take the reins of leadership, so the bramble—a useless, thorn-covered bush—gladly agreed to be
king.

The apathy of Israel has its parallel in America. Edmund Burke’s great statement is still true: “All that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing.” Every Christian must do what is necessary to place godly people in leadership and take action to stand against evil.

The Return to Glory

If the glory is to return to America, we must return to God, the source of glory. He is waiting for us to return to Him, for He works through His people.

There is hope for America. The book of Judges shows how God sent deliverers to rally the people to the Word of God and repentance. God brought restoration and forgiveness. The God Who did that for Israel so long ago can do that for America today, when we humble ourselves, pray, and seek Him with all our hearts. (2 Chronicles 7:14)

God would much rather forgive than judge! I know you have heard these comparisons of Israel and America before, but if we will stain heaven with our prayers and press the battle, we can take this country back for Jesus Christ. Will you humbly pray and ask for God’s forgiveness on our land today? Pray for a mighty revival! Will you seek Him with all your heart? May the fire of His Holy Spirit fall and cleanse our land.

Francis Schaeffer: “Whatever Happened to the Human Race” (Episode 1) ABORTION OF THE HUMAN RACE

Published on Oct 6, 2012 by

A timely article by Adrian Rogers.

Don’t Let An Election Steal Your Song

Like many Christians, you may be discouraged about the way your nation is going. Whether you live in the United States or elsewhere, contention and infighting headline our news each day. It’s discouraging. But don’t let an election steal your song of joy.

The prophet Habakkuk wrote his three-chapter book in a time of national calamity. Everything that wasn’t nailed down was coming loose, and the devil was pulling nails. We live in just such a day—anarchy in the nations, apostasy in the churches, apathy in the streets. Habakkuk wanted to inspire God’s people not to lose their song but to keep singing despite difficult times.

A PERPLEXING PROBLEM

Habakkuk was intensely patriotic. He loved God, God’s people, and his land. He wanted God’s glory, but nothing he wanted worked out. Eventually he faced the same questions we face: Why doesn’t God answer prayer? Where is He? Is He weak and can’t do anything? Is He so hard-hearted He doesn’t even care? We stain heaven with tears, we fast and pray. Yet things still don’t get better. In fact, sometimes they get worse.

Habakkuk looked upon his day and cried, “Lord, I’ve been praying and praying. Why are You silent? Do You hear my prayer?” We understand how Habakkuk felt. In such times, people lose their faith. They wring their hands and wonder if God is going to intervene.

In Habakkuk’s day conditions were deplorable. The priests of God weren’t preaching His Word. They were worldly and selfish, taking bribes and serving God only for what they could get out of it. In America, the problem is not in the White House. It’s in the church house—a generation of preachers who “dumb down” the Word of God, telling people what they want to hear rather than what they need to hear—that sex outside of marriage is fine; homosexuality is an acceptable lifestyle, and it’s all right to take the lives of pre-born babies.

Sin that used to slink down back alleys now struts down Main Street with a banner: “We’re loud, and we’re proud!” A nation of unblushables is a nation on its last legs.

A PROPER PERSPECTIVE

God revealed to a grieving Habakkuk the judgment He was bringing upon His people, explaining, “Unfortunately, that’s the only thing My people understand. I’ve called them with lovingkindness, but they would not answer” (Habakkuk 1:5-6). It was true then. It is true today.

Our country does not belong to the humanists, perverts, pornographers, or abortionists. Christian people established this country for religious freedom. Now the church in general is being held captive by the world, the flesh, and the devil. God wants us to get sober and come back to Him.

In these desperate days, we need to get quiet in God’s presence, center on Him and Him alone, and listen. As He told the Israelites in Isaiah 30:15: “In returning and rest shall ye be saved; in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength: and ye would not.” Let’s not make the same mistake.

In this age, each of us must rely totally on God. Faith is what keeps us going in dark days. Faith sees beyond the physical to the spiritual, beyond the present to the future, beyond the temporary to the eternal. Faith does not judge by the appearances of the hour. Only faith will enable us to endure.

A PROFOUND PRAISE

Habakkuk began with the question “Why?” God never answered his question. Instead, God told Habakkuk to tell the people to remember His greatness and rejoice in His goodness…the holiness and majesty of the Almighty, who reigns in darkest times. (Habakkuk 3:18-19)

One day God is going to put His Son upon His holy hill of Zion. Then the earth will be filled with His glory! Oh friend, what a day that will be when Jesus reigns! When we become discouraged, God wants us to focus on Him. Draw all your attention to His throne, where He reigns in complete control and perfect love. He says, “I am your strength! I am your hope!”

If you find yourself feeling like Habakkuk, I promise if you’ll get the message of Habakkuk down in your heart, it will do the same for you that it did for me. My song of joy returned! This is God’s book for this hour.

Don’t let the dark times or the political crisis of the day steal your song! Keep on singing! Keep on praising! Keep on believing! Keep on loving! Our God reigns!

Turning back to God may be the only hope for America.

Is It Too Late For America?

taken from a message given by Adrian Rogers

Have we already crossed the point of no return? Will the American dream, placed in the bosom of our forefathers, become a national nightmare? This wonderful nation, born in 1776, must be born again or we will join the graveyard of nations.

Many can remember a time in America when pregnancy outside marriage was a scandal, homosexuality a sin, pornography a moral sickness, child abuse was rare, marriage was sacred, and “living together” was shameful. In public schools our students were allowed to pray and the Ten Commandments were posted on the walls.

But a proud nation, wallowing in materialism, rotting in sin, searching for what we call pleasure and freedom, has insulted the Almighty.

Those who preach the Word of God are shunned and laughed at today. If a reporter were to read this, he would call it “extreme right-wing rhetoric.” The matter is not right or left; the matter is right or wrong. And God’s Word is right.

I don’t speak as a pessimist, but I tell you this much: America must turn to God or she will die. We’re ready for judgment, but we need mercy. What does the Word of God say? There is hope for America in this promise from His Word:

If My people who are called by My name shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from Heaven, and forgive their sin and heal their land. (2 Chronicles 7:14)

“If My people”

This promise rests upon what God’s people do. We err when we lament, “O, if only Hollywood…if the government would…if pornographers would go out of business…if abortionists would stop….” But God doesn’t look to them. He’s looking at us, His people! He’s looking at you. We’re to humble ourselves, pray, and repent. Are you one of His people? Then stop putting the blame on anyone else. If America falls, it will be our fault—the fault of God’s people.

You say, “If only God would….” Is God to blame for the mess we’re in? No. “For the time has come that judgment must begin at the house of God” (1 Peter 4:17). The church must start at its back door. The hope of America is not in the White House, State House, or school house—it’s in God’s house and in God’s people.

“…shall humble themselves…”

Today in America we reek with pride. Pride is #1 on God’s hate parade. “These six things doth the Lord hate; yea, seven are an abomination unto Him” (Proverbs 6:16), and first on the list is pride. Pride is behind every sin. We don’t pray—we reek with humanistic haughtiness. We strut in the face of God. God cannot bless you as an individual or us as a nation when we have such pride. We’re to humble ourselves.

…Wherefore He saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace to the humble. (James 4:6)

Think about that: God resisting you, God resisting America. God setting Himself in battle array against us! But He gives grace to the humble.” America needs His grace. But first we must humble ourselves.

“…and pray…”

Praying for AmericaWe cry “O, God! Do something!” Beloved, God is doing something. God is judging this nation. God doesn’t hear every prayer—He sets stipulations: “…pray, seek My face, turn from your wicked ways.”

We say, “God is our only hope,” but—and this may shock you—God is also our biggest threat. I’m not as afraid of what some terrorist may do to America as I am of what God may do to America. He is a God of holiness, and He will judge us.

“…turn from their wicked ways…”

Prayer without repentance angers God. Are we really going to sing “God Bless America” while we’re killing little babies, sodomy struts down main streets with pride, and God is cursed, maligned, and cannot be mentioned in our public concourse? Why should God bless America?

Here Is the Call: Pray. Seek My Face. Repent.

I don’t know if we’ve crossed God’s deadline or not. But if there were ever a time we need to repent, this is the time, this is the day, this is the age. He would rather pardon than judge. Let us set our hearts to seek God. May He have mercy upon America, and may America bless God.

John MacArthur on Proverbs (Part 10) Summing up Proverbs study

Over and over in Proverbs you hear the words “fear the Lord.” In fact, some of he references are Proverbs 1:7, 29; 2:5; 8:13; 9:10;14:26,27; 15:16 and many more. Below is a sermon by John MacArthur from the Book of Luke on 3 reasons we should fear the Lord. (I have posted John MacArthur’s amazing sermon on the fulfillment of Old Testament scripture before on my blog.)

_____________

PART 10

People just don’t fear the Lord like they need to and if they did then they would not sin so much because they don’t want to displease the Lord. Phillippians 4:8-9 is one of my favorite scriptures. If you practice that verse then you can guard your mind like Proverbs instructs us to do.

Philippians 4:8

The Message (MSG)

8-9 Summing it all up, friends, I’d say you’ll do best by filling your minds and meditating on things true, noble, reputable, authentic, compelling, gracious—the best, not the worst; the beautiful, not the ugly; things to praise, not things to curse. Put into practice what you learned from me, what you heard and saw and realized. Do that, and God, who makes everything work together, will work you into his most excellent harmonies.

Obeying our parents is a must if we want to have a blessed life. Look at this passage:

Exodus 20:12

Amplified Bible (AMP)

12 Regard (treat with honor, due obedience, and courtesy) your father and mother, that your days may be long in the land the Lord your God gives you.

__________

I want to live a long life so I better respect and obey my parents. I also need to surround myself with wise companions. Check out Proverbs 13:20:

King James 2000 Bible (©2003)
He that walks with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.

American Standard Version
Walk with wise men, and thou shalt be wise; But the companion of fools shall smart for it.

Douay-Rheims Bible
He that walketh with the wise, shall be wise: a friend of fools shall become like to them.

Darby Bible Translation
He that walketh with wise men becometh wise; but a companion of the foolish will be depraved.

English Revised Version
Walk with wise men, and thou shalt be wise: but the companion of fools shall smart for it.

Webster’s Bible Translation
He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.

World English Bible
One who walks with wise men grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm.

Young’s Literal Translation
Whoso is walking with wise men is wise, And a companion of fools suffereth evil.

John MacArthur

I remember hearing Dr. Adrian Rogers say that if he had to do it over again he would read from Proverbs every day to his kids. They turned out to be great kids and they were raised right. Nevertheless, if he had to do it over again he thought a more emphasis on Proverbs is the way to go. That is why I am spending so much time in Proverbs with my kids today.

John MacArthur does a great job on Proverbs and here is a portion of his sermon on Proverbs.

Well, such is the duty of a father. And I close with this, listen carefully. You have this duty as a father and I want to lay it as clear as I can at your feet.

1. If you fail, father, to teach your son to fear God, the devil will teach him to hate God.

2. If you fail to teach your son to guard his mind, the devil will gladly teach him to have an open mind.

3. If you fail to teach your son to obey his parents, the devil will teach him to rebel and break his parent’s heart.

4. If you fail to teach your son to select his companions, the devil will gladly choose them for him.

5. If you fail to teach your son to control his body, the devil will teach him to give it over completely to lust.

6. If you fail to teach your son to enjoy the marriage partner that God has given him, the devil will teach him to destroy the marriage.

7.If you fail to teach your son to watch his words, the devil will fill his mouth with filth.

8. If you fail to teach your son to pursue his work, the devil will make his laziness a tool of hell.

9. If you fail to teach your son to manage his money, the devil will teach him to waste it on riotous living.

10. And if you fail to teach your son to love his neighbor, the devil will gladly teach him to love only himself. We have a great responsibility to this generation and the next as fathers.

Lord, we thank You for our time this morning in worship and the Word. I would pray for all here who are fathers that we might be faithful to teach what we should teach to our sons, to all our children, that we might be instruments of Your grace to bring about a godly seed in the next generation. Amen.

ONE FINAL QUESTION: WHAT DOES PROVERBS 6:34 MEAN?

Adultery is a brainless act,
soul-destroying, self-destructive;
Expect a bloody nose, a black eye,
and a reputation ruined for good.

John MacArthur on Proverbs (Part 9) “Love your neighbor” When we say you don’t co‑sign for a stranger we don’t mean you don’t give money to someone in need. No. Chapter 3 verse 27, “Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due when it is in your power to do it.” If you’ve got the money, give it. If you’ve got the goods, give them to the person in need.

PART 9

So many times at work we are rude and strike back at those who are unkind to us. At home we may find that a neighbor has done something to our property and get upset and then plan how we can get back at them. Instead, we should love our neighbor and reach out to them.

I learned a lot from Adrian Rogers’ message on this subject. Rogers observed:

God put you in that place so you could serve Him. We are to let our light shine in every place where God has places us! Matthew 5:14-16 says,
“Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

Your job is the lampstand that God has ordained where you let your light shine!

You have been saved out of the world and then sent back into the world to witness to the world, and that’s the only business in the world you have in the world, till you’re taken out of the world!

One final lesson. Son, love your neighbor. When we say you don’t co‑sign for a stranger we don’t mean you don’t give money to someone in need. No. Chapter 3 verse 27, “Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due when it is in your power to do it.” If you’ve got the money, give it. If you’ve got the goods, give them to the person in need. Generosity to the poor, meeting the needs of people around you when you have the resources is a part of honoring God. You’re to be generous in showing sacrificial love to your neighbor. Don’t say…verse 28…”Go, come back and tomorrow I’ll give it.” Don’t do that, if you’ve got it in your pocket, give it. If you have it, give it. Don’t tell them to come back. He has a need, you give the need. If you have it with you don’t send him away and have him come back.

Another thing about your neighbor while you’re loving him, don’t devise harm against your neighbor when he lives in security beside you. He feels well being beside you and you’ve got some plot going on where you’re going to get back at him in retaliation for something he did, or where you’re going to confiscate the corner of his property, or you’re going to do something to cut off his water or whatever it is. Don’t do anything that is going to harm your neighbor. Don’t contend with your neighbor, verse 30, without any reason if he’s done you no harm. Don’t be vengeful, is verse 31. Don’t have vengeance toward a neighbor. Don’t envy people who resolve all issues with violence and say…Boy, I wish I could…if I had my way I’d cut him up…don’t be vengeful. Don’t choose any of the ways of violent men. The curse of the Lord is on those kinds of people.

So, take care of your neighbor. Love him, live with him in peace. Forgive him, meet his needs. Those are the rules. And verse 35 says you’ll inherit honor…honor.

In all labour there is profit: but the talk of the lips tendeth only to penury.
Proverbs 14:23

I’ve heard people say, I sure would like to be in a Christian company and be surrounded by Christians. The only time I hear God’s name mentioned where I work now is when people are cursing. And you just cannot believe the obscene jokes, gossip, greed, back-stabbing, throat-cutting, and all of the materialism! Oh if God would only get me out of this place so I could serve Him!

Do you know how I would respond? I would tell them, God put you in that place so you could serve Him.

Now, let me give you four rules for witnessing to those with whom you work.

Don’t Brag

The Bible says let your light shine. It doesn’t say make it shine. Your light is to glow, not glare. Also, people are to see the light, not the source of the light.

If you go to work with an air of self-righteousness, you’re going to make your coworkers sick and not want to even be around you. 1 Corinthians 1:30-31 says,

“It is because of Him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God — that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption. Therefore, as it is written: “Let him who boasts boast in the Lord.”

Don’t Nag

If you’re always thumping a Bible or nagging somebody when he gambles, smokes, or curses, you’re not going to win that person to Christ. You may think that you’re doing a good job, but that person is not going to take a step closer to Jesus Christ through that kind of witness.

You see, his behavior is not his problem. You would be just like that person if you didn’t know the Lord Jesus Christ. He needs Jesus Christ. So let’s see how we are to respond from Colossians 4:5-6:
“Walk in wisdom toward them that are without, redeeming the time. Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.”

Don’t Lag

If you’re a lazy Christian — not getting to work on time, doing personal stuff on company time, procrastinating on work that you ought to do, then you’re a disgrace to grace. It is a sin for a Christian to do less than his best. Let’s revisit Colossians 3:23-24 says,
“And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.”

Don’t see if the boss is looking before you work hard. I don’t care how dull or boring, it may seem. It’s not that way…if you’re working to the glory of God. Do your job to the best of your ability.

Don’t Sag

I want to tell you something about those people with whom you work. Most of them are not all that interested in going to heaven or hell. They just want to know how to hack it on Monday. And when they see you come in the office without a hangover and with the joy of the Lord Jesus on your face, they’re going to ask you, “What makes you so happy?”

And at that moment, you’re going to be able to share the Lord Jesus with him because you will have sanctified the Lord God in your heart. 1 Peter 3:15 says,
“But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear.”

ONE FINAL QUESTION: WHAT DOES THIS VERSE MEAN?

Colossians 4:5-6:
“Walk in wisdom toward them that are without, redeeming the time. Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.”
