Ronald Reagan introduces this program, and traces a line from Adam Smith’s “The Wealth of Nations” to Milton Friedman’s work, describing Free to Choose as “a survival kit for you, for our nation and for freedom.” Dr. Friedman travels to Hungary and Czechoslovakia to learn how Eastern Europeans are rebuilding their collapsed economies. His conclusion: they must accept the verdict of history that governments create no wealth. Economic freedom is the only source of prosperity. That means free, private markets. Attempts to find a “third way” between socialism and free markets are doomed from the start. If the people of Eastern Europe are given the chance to make their own choices they will achieve a high level of prosperity. Friedman tells us individual stories about how small businesses struggle to survive against the remains of extensive government control. Friedman says, “Everybody knows what needs to be done. The property that is now in the hands of the state, needs to be gotten into the hands of private people who can use it in accordance with their own interests and values.” Eastern Europe has observed the history of free markets in the United States and wants to copy our success. After the documentary, Dr. Friedman talks further about government and the economy with Gary Becker of the University of Chicago and Samuel Bowles of the University of Massachusetts. In a wide-ranging discussion, they disagree about the results of economic controls in countries around the world, with Friedman defending his thesis that the best government role is the smallest one.

Hello, I am Linda Chavez and welcome to Free to Choose. Joining Dr. Friedman for a discussion of the failure of socialism are Gary Becker from the University of Chicago and Samuel Bowles of the University of Massachusetts. Dr. Bowles, I think we can all agree that socialism has failed Eastern Europe. Dr. Friedman believes that the path out of that is the free market and I think he thinks there are lessons for the United States.
Chavez: I would like to bring this discussion back to the United States for a moment. What about socialism in the United States. There has been one area where we have tried to redistribute wealth. We have done that through our welfare policies and social security. Has that worked?
Friedman: For some people, it benefited, but taken as a whole, I think it has been a failure.
Becker: I agree with that. I think the big problem in the United States has been, of course, some of the welfare programs have been successful. But by trying to do too many things, the government is no longer doing the things that it should be doing. We all agree there are many things government should be doing. I agree with Milton __ he is a strong man to be say this is an issue between no government and 100% government. The question is what are the tasks that government should be doing. I believe the tasks are, of course, defense against outside aggression, internal protection, some infrastructure, protection of the people can’t make it. In every one of these areas, we are not doing very well. I think we are not doing well mainly because we are trying to do a lot of things we shouldn’t be doing. They can’t do all of them.
Chavez: I couldn’t help but think, Dr. Bowles, as I watched that film that the public housing area that we saw in Eastern Europe and the problems that we have here in the United States. Aren’t there some lessons to be learned?
Bowles: There is absolutely no reason why housing shouldn’t be privately owned. That does not mean that the government has no role in housing. It seems to me that housing is precisely something that ought to be a matter of private property. But we also know, from the experience of this country, that the market itself doesn’t provide housing that the rest of the public thinks is adequate for the vast majority of poor people in this country. Now that doesn’t mean it has to be done by government building the houses, but it certainly does mean that something has to be done or we are going to have the kind of homeless crisis that we have in this country and they are getting one in Eastern Europe too.
Becker: The homeless crisis is a tiny fraction of the population of the United States. Let’s not make that a major part of the housing problem in the United States. I am not at all convinced that there is any evidence suggesting that the private system cannot provide adequate housing. I think there is a good case to be made that there are poor people in this country and the government obviously has to help them out. We all agree on that. But should they be doing it by building housing or by giving them income and permitting them to spend as they see fit. I see no evidence from the U.S. or any other country who were better off when then government takes a major role in housing or any of these other particular activities that allocate resources.
Friedman: What role has been played in the difficulty of getting housing by government interventions? By rent control? By excessive building code regulations, many of which are designed to protect the interests of special groups. Government played a very large role.
RESPONSE: In one sense, this statement is true. Modern science has been learning more and more about our world over the last several hundred years. However, in another sense, this statement is false. In some areas, the “gaps” in our scientific knowledge have not been closing but openingover the last fifty years.
Here, we need to distinguish between scientific experimentation and scientific explanation. While scientific experimentation has grown in all areas of science, scientific explanations have shrunk in certain areas. For instance, the origin of the universe, the fine-tuning of the universe, and the origin of first life are just as inexplicable now, as they were when they were first studied. Just consider the origin of first life. In his book The Fifth Miracle, agnostic Paul Davies writes,
When I set out to write this book, I was convinced that science was close to wrapping up the mystery of life’s origin… Having spent a year or two researching the field, I am now of the opinion that there remains a huge gulf in our understanding… This gulf in understanding is not merely ignorance about certain technical details; it is a major conceptual lacuna.[1]
In his book The Way of the Cell, agnostic Franklin Harold writes,
Of all the unsolved mysteries remaining in science, the most consequential may be the origin of life… The origin of life is also a stubborn problem, with no solution in sight.[2]
Naturalistic scientists are just as far from explaining the origin of first life, as they have ever been. In fact, the more we learn about these “gaps,” the less we are able to explain them –apart from an intelligent cause. Moreover, if science is truly explaining away the supernatural, then why have devout atheists like Antony Flew come to faith in God due to these recent scientific discoveries? In his book There is a God, Flew writes,
The only satisfactory explanation for the origin of such ‘end-directed, self-replicating’ life as we see on earth is an infinitely intelligent Mind.[3]
I must say again that the journey to my discovery of the Divine has thus far been a pilgrimage of reason. I have followed the argumentwhere it has led me. And it has led me to accept the existence of a self-existent, immutable, immaterial, omnipotent, and omniscient Being.[4]
Flew claimed that his other atheistic colleagues –like Bertrand Russell and J.L. Mackie –would have been “impressed” with this “evidence,”[5]if it had been discovered earlier.

A half-century ago, in 1955, Professor Antony Flew set the agenda for modern atheism with his Theology and Falsification, a paper presented in a debate with C.S. Lewis. This work became the most widely reprinted philosophical publication of the last 50 years. Over the decades, he published more than 30 books attacking belief in God and debated a wide range of religious believers.
Then, in a 2004 Summit at New York University, Professor Flew announced that the discoveries of modern science have led him to the conclusion that the universe is indeed the creation of infinite Intelligence.

ANTONY FLEW’S SIGNIFICANCE IN THE
HISTORY OF ATHEISM by Roy Abraham Varghese
It is not too much to say that within the last hundred years,
no mainstream philosopher has developed the kind of sys-
tematic, comprehensive, original, and influential exposi-
tion of atheism that is to be found in Antony Flew’s fifty
years of antitheological writings. Prior to Flew, the major
apologias for atheism were those of Enlightenment think-
ers like David Hume and the nineteenth-century German
philosophers Arthur Schopenhauer, Ludwig Feuerbach,
and Friedrich Nietzsche.
But what about Bertrand Russell (who maintained
rather implausibly that he was technically an agnostic,
although he was an atheist in practice), Sir Alfred Ayer,
Jean-Paul Sartre, Albert Camus, and Martin Heidegger, all
of whom were twentieth-century atheists well before Flew
began writing? In Russell’s case, it is quite obvious that
he did not produce anything beyond a few polemical pam-
phlets on his skeptical views and his disdain for organized
religion. His Religion and Science and Why I Am Not a
Christian were simply anthologies of articles—he produced
no systematic philosophy of religion. At best, he drew atten-
tion to the problem of evil and sought to refute traditional
arguments for God’s existence without generating any new
arguments of his own. Ayer, Sartre, Camus, and Heidegger
have this in common: their focus was on generating a spe-
cific way of engaging in philosophical discussion, an after-
effect of which was the denial of God. They had their own
systems of thought of which atheism was a by-product. You
had to buy into their systems to buy into their atheism. The
same might be said of later nihilists like Richard Rorty and
Jacques Derrida.
Of course, there were major philosophers of Flew’s gen-
eration who were atheists; W. V. O. Quine and Gilbert Ryle
are obvious instances. But none took the step of developing
book-length arguments to support their personal beliefs.
Why so? In many instances, professional philosophers in
those days were disinclined to dirty their delicate hands
by indulging in such popular, even vulgar, discussions. In
other cases, the motive was prudence.
Certainly, in later years, there were atheist philoso-
phers who critically examined and rejected the traditional
arguments for God’s existence. These range from Paul
Edwards, Wallace Matson, Kai Nielsen, and Paul Kurtz to J.
L. Mackie, Richard Gale, and Michael Martin. But their
works did not change the agenda and framework of discus-
sion the way Flew’s innovative publications did.
Where does the originality of Flew’s atheism lie? In “The-
ology and Falsification,”
God and Philosophy, and The Pre-
sumption of Atheism, he developed novel arguments against
theism that, in some respects, laid out a road map for subse-
quent philosophy of religion. In “Theology and Falsification”
he raised the question of how religious statements can make
meaningful claims (his much-quoted expression “death by a
thousand qualifications” captures this point memorably); in
God and Philosophy he argued that no discussion on God’s
existence can begin until the coherence of the concept of
an omnipresent, omniscient spirit had been established; in
The Presumption of Atheism he contended that the burden
of proof rests with theism and that atheism should be the
default position. Along the way, he of course analyzed the
traditional arguments for God’s existence. But it was his rein-
vention of the frames of reference that changed the whole
nature of the discussion.
In the context of all of the above, Flew’s recent rejec-
tion of atheism was clearly a historic event. But it is little
known that, even in his atheist days, Flew had, in a sense,

After the world’s most influential atheist stunned the atheist community with his book There Is a God, and was accused of being a senescent scholar manipulated by cunning Christians, Antony Flew has come out swinging at Richard Dawkins and his book The God Delusion.
The fault of Dawkins as an academic (which he still was during the period in which he composed this book although he has since announced his intention to retire) was his scandalous and apparently deliberate refusal to present the doctrine which he appears to think he has refuted in its strongest form…and his failure is the crucial index of his insincerity of academic purpose and therefore warrants me in charging him with having become, what he has probably believed to be an impossibility, a secularist bigot.
After criticizing Dawkins for his unacademic approach, Flew turns to the author’s self-serving intentions:
This whole business makes all too clear that Dawkins is not interested in the truth as such but is primarily concerned to discredit an ideological opponent by any available means. That would itself constitute sufficient reason for suspecting that the whole enterprise of The God Delusion was not, as it at least pretended to be, an attempt to discover and spread knowledge of the existence or non-existence of God but rather an attempt,an extremely successful one, to spread the author’s own convictions in this area.
If that’s the result of mental senescence, I’ll look forward to a lump of it when I approach those octogenarian years.

Why do I keep writing and email Senator Pryor suggestions on how to cut our budget? I gave him hundreds of ideas about how to cut spending and as far as I can tell he has taken none of my suggestions. You can find some of my suggestions here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, and here, and they all were emailed to him. Dear Senator Pryor,
Why not pass the Balanced Budget amendment? As you know that federal deficit is at all time high (1.6 trillion deficit with revenues of 2.2 trillion and spending at 3.8 trillion).
On my blog www.thedailyhatch.org . I took you at your word and sent you over 100 emails with specific spending cut ideas. (Actually there were over 160 emails with specific spending cut suggestions.) However, I did not see any of them in the recent debt deal that Congress adopted although you did respond to me several times. Now I am trying another approach. Every week from now on I will send you an email explaining different reasons why we need the Balanced Budget Amendment. It will appear on my blog on “Thirsty Thursday” because the government is always thirsty for more money to spend. Today I actually have included a great article below from the Heritage Foundation concerning an area of our federal budget that needs to be cut down to size. The funny thing about the Sequester and the 2.4% of cuts in future increases is that President Obama set these up and then he acted like the sky was falling in as the cartoons indicate in the newspapers.
IF YOU TRULY WANT TO CUT THE BUDGET AND BALANCE THE BUDGET THEN SUBMIT THESE POTENTIAL BUDGET CUTS PRESENTED BELOW!!

If you to cut the size of government then you don’t add a program like Obamacare. It will grow government like nothing ever has in American history.
The political elitists in Washington are worried that the American people are lukewarm – or even downright hostile – about Obamacare.
You can imagine two of them having a conversation, with the first saying, “Don’t these stupid peasants realize we’re giving them stuff?!?” and the second responding “We need the riff-raff in flyover country to feel grateful so they’re more likely to vote in favor of continued dependency!”
It never occurs to them that maybe, just maybe, people value freedom. Or, even if they don’t care about liberty, perhaps they object to the fact that government costs a lot and delivers very little. Nobody likes paying for a steak and getting a hamburger, after all.
But the statists think it’s just a matter of messaging, and this mindset is even seen in news coverage.
The Obama administration and its health-law allies are gearing up this summer to slice through three years of confusion and opposition to Obamacare. They’ve got their work cut out for them. Obamacare won’t have a shot at success unless millions of people sign up for insurance — the healthy as well as the sick. …Organizing for Action, spun off from President Barack Obama’s campaign operation, went up with a seven-figure TV ad buy in June, touting the new benefits and promising to offer “the truth” about the law. Enroll America, a nonprofit group with ties to the White House, wants to leverage the grass roots across the country and engage big-name celebrities for the cause.
To put it mildly, they have their work cut out for them.
Needless to say, not that many people will be dumb enough to take that deal, regardless of how many empty-headed Hollywood millionaires take part in a PR campaign telling them it’s the “cool” thing to do.
Especially when another brainless part of Obamacare basically allows people to wait until they get sick and then get insurance. If you’re wondering how that will work, just imagine how auto insurance would work if you could wait until after your DUI accident to get a policy – and you got subsidized by all the responsible drivers!
Obamacare defenders may delude themselves into believing that the mandate will work, but the penalty for noncompliance (oops, apologies Chief Justice Roberts, I meant the “tax” for noncompliance) is a lot less than the cost of an insurance policy.
And I don’t think the American people will be pleased when the army of new IRS agents starts harassing them to sign up for a bad deal.
It’s almost enough to make me feel sorry for the hacks at OFA and elsewhere who are trying to sell this lemon.
Simply stated, it doesn’t matter how much lipstick you put on a pig.

Though I imagine she thinks we just need some clever messaging so we understand why it’s okay that bad things are happening to children, retirees, and low-income workers.

The Balanced Budget Amendment is the only thing I can think of that would force Washington to cut spending. We have only a handful of balanced budgets in the last 60 years, so obviously what we are doing is not working. We are passing along this debt to the next generation. Antony Flew did not make a public profession of faith in Christ but will his conversion from atheism to theism have an impact? Many students even today are studying the classical arguments for and against the existence of God and when they come to the contributions of Antony Flew they will also not that he abandoned his atheism when he was 81 years old. That impact will be great indeed!!!
Abraham Varghese, who had organized philosophical symposia since 1985, at most of which Flew made the case for atheism, describes the significance of his 2004 change of mind thus:
It is not too much to say that within the last hundred years, no mainstream philosopher has developed the kind of systematic, comprehensive, original, and influential exposition of atheism that is to be found in Antony Flew’s fifty years of antitheological writings.
When the famous atheist philosopher Antony Flew became a theist a few years back, the news was met by mixed reactions by Christians. Some haled it as a good thing; others are not so sure or think possibly it’s not good since he didn’t become a Christian. One of these skeptics asked me about my opinion the other night. Why have so many Christians been excited about Flew’s “conversion” since he didn’t become a Christian?
Certainly, mere theism isn’t enough to be reconciled to God through Jesus. However, I still think it is a good think that Flew has made this move. First, I think that it shows the power of good arguments. When a life-long atheist and world-class intellectual can be persuaded, that showsthat Christians have the rational goods. God makes sense and relationship with Him doesn’t require sacrificing one’s intellect, which is a stumbling block for some people who have the opposite impression. Second, theism over atheism is progress because now Flew has a belief and a concept of God that can be shaped and informed to become more accurate and true.
Becoming a Christian is rarely done in one fell swoop of belief and assent. It usually takes time to consider the information and for the Holy Spirit to work. We need to be willing to meet people where they are and take the time necessary to introduce them to the God of salvation.

We all know that could be an excuse for this woman but I’m sure we’ve all seen our fair share of pro-life Christians who allowed their emotions to get the best of them when trying to fight for justice and end up looking unjust because of how they represented God’s grace and compassion in their words and actions.
I believe we can easily lose sight of God’s compassion for sinners and His grace in the gospel when we sometimes fight against an abortion culture. We brought awareness to the Kermit Gosnell trial and God’s desire for justice but have we magnified his heart for the worst of sinners as well? Right now, pro-lifers have the chance of a lifetime to show the atrocity of abortion. But will we error so far to the side of telling people “I told you it was murder” that we’ll forget to say that we love those who murder because Jesus loved them first.
1 Peter 4:7-8 says,
“7 The end of all things is at hand; therefore be self-controlled and sober-minded for the sake of your prayers. 8 Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins.”
But we can’t love people enough for their sins to be covered because we’re so focused on exposing these sins.

I know that you receive 20,000 letters a day and that you actually read 10 of them every day. I really do respect you for trying to get a pulse on what is going on out here. I know that you don’t agree with my pro-life views but I wanted to challenge you as a fellow Christian to re-examine your pro-choice view.

During this time of reflection I wanted to put forth some of the pro-life’s best arguments.
I truly believe that many of the problems we have today in the USA are due to the advancement of humanism in the last few decades in our society. Ronald Reagan appointed the evangelical Dr. C. Everett Koop to the position of Surgeon General in his administration. He partnered with Dr. Francis Schaeffer in making the video below. It is very valuable information for Christians to have. Actually I have included a video below that includes comments from him on this subject.

I have noticed that many abortion advocates have been acting as if the atrocities of Kermit Gosnell are a one-off anomaly—as if there are no other late term abortionists in the United States who have to deal with infants born alive. Nothing could be further from the truth. Live Action has produced a couple undercover videos showing how routine both late-term abortions are. The videos also show that late-term abortionists everywhere have to deal with infants who survive abortions.
The video shows a clinic worker telling a woman to flush her baby down the toilet if the baby survives the abortion. This video shows an abortion doctor describing what he would do if a baby survived an abortion. In short, he says he would let it die on the table (which is illegal).

I also respect you for putting your faith in Christ for your eternal life. I am pleading to you on the basis of the Bible to please review your religious views concerning abortion. It was the Bible that caused the abolition movement of the 1800’s and it also was the basis for Martin Luther King’s movement for civil rights and it also is the basis for recognizing the unborn children.

Despite the initial concerns regarding Melissa’s future after surviving the attempt to end her life and being born alive at approximately seven months gestation, she has not only survived but thrived.
