“Distance” is a song by American singer-songwriter Christina Perri. The new version of the track featuring Jason Mraz is the third official single taken from the deluxe version of her debut studio album “Lovestrong” (2011) released on March 20, 2012. It was written by Perri and co-written and produced by David Hodges. It is a midtempo ballad about “loving someone at the wrong time in your life” and “being around that one whom your heart longs for without being able to show your true feelings”.

The song received generally favorable reviews from music critics, with most praising their “emotional vulnerability and engagement” and their chemistry. The original version of the song is the official theme for the ABC TV series “Revenge” whose music video was released April 12, 2012. The official music video featuring Mraz was released on June 30, 2012. It has reached number 20 on the Adult Pop Songs chart.

Background and composition[edit]

“Distance” was written by Christina Perri and co-written and produced by David Hodges.[1] It is a midtempo ballad about loving someone at the wrong time in your life. Maybe it’s too soon, maybe it’s too late, but nevertheless it’s about being around that one whom your heart longs for without being able to show your true feelings, without being able to tell them.[2] A new version of the track featuring her good friend Jason Mraz was recorded and released as a single.[3][4] Perri said: “It’s very hard to keep love a secret, and I wrote this song about the one time I had to.”[2] With lyrics like, “Please don’t stand so close to me, I’m having trouble breathing, I’m afraid of what you’ll see right now,” it reflects reality for anyone who has ever fallen in love.[5]

Talking to Artist Direct, Perri further explained the track:

“I wrote it about being in love with someone and not being able to tell them. All of my songs are so specific. They’re a story in my life or something I went through which I pull from. I wrote this about the summer of 2010. I fell in love with someone, and we had to work pretty closely together. I had to pretend I didn’t like him which was the hardest thing for me because I’m not good at lying [Laughs]. The song is about the feelings and swimming in that kind of tension when you’re around someone and trying to keep it cool. That’s what it means for me. Instead of telling him I loved him, I wrote it to him in a song. That’s where I go.”[6]

Perri also talked about the experience of working with Jason Mraz on the new version:

“When a song is born, there’s one thing it’s about or one feeling it gives for the artist. There’s one feeling ‘Distance’ has given me which is stitched up on my heart, but I think it’s always up for interpretation from the listener’s perspective. Jason and I performed it together one time because we were doing a radio show and we thought, ‘Let’s sing a duet!’ He said, ‘How about ‘Distance’?’ He liked it on my album so I was like, ‘Sure.’ We sang it together in San Diego last December. Something happened. Everyone in the audience felt it. My band felt it. Our managers felt it. It was like, “What was that?” There was a three-and-a-half minute journey we went on that was pretty magical. I’m a huge Jason fan so, of course, I felt it. The fact everyone else did probably proved it was something special. We decided to do it again at some other function we were playing together. I was going to put out as a single anyway, and the idea began to get dreamed up. Now, when we perform it, we still go there. With Jason, when we sing this song, we go to this magical place. It feels really good to sing with him. I can’t wait to perform it every night together all summer.”[6]

Critical reception[edit]

The song received generally favorable reviews from music critics. Rolling Stone gave the song a positive review, commending the duet between Perri and Mraz, writing: “The song’s bittersweet message and haunting duet vocals from Perri and Mraz carry the clip with plenty of emotional vulnerability and engagement.”[2] Becky Bain of Idolator praised the duet, writing: “In addition to having two complimentary voices, Perri and Mraz have undeniable chemistry.”[7] Kyle Dowling of “Pop Crush” commented: “While melancholy, the song is beautifully done and floods with emotion.”[8] Jenna Hally Rubestein of MTV Buzzworthy praised the song, writing: “It’s the type of song poignant enough to leave you blubbering and snot-crying into an empty pint of ice cream (since Lady Antebellum‘s “Need You Now“), because that’s just what happens when you add one amazing singer-songwriter to another amazing singer-songwriter.[9] On his music site The Re-View, Nick Bassett called it “quite beautiful on the ears. It sounds like a much more restrained performance from the ‘Jar Of Hearts’ singer and the emotionally engaging combination of her and Mraz really does connect with some resonance.”[10]

Chart performance[edit]

The song debuted at number 40 on the Adult Pop Songs on the Billboard charts.[11] It follows her number seven-peaking Adult Pop Songs hit “A Thousand Years“.[11] For the week of September 15, 2012, the song climbed from number 25 to number 20 on the Adult Pop Songs chart.[12]

Revenge version[edit]

A music video featuring scenes of the ABC‘s TV series Revenge was released.

The original version of the song is the official theme for the ABC TV series “Revenge” whose music video was released on April 12, 2012. [3] The video begins with a 20 second clip of Jack Porter revealing his feelings for Emily Thorne played by Nick Wechsler and Emily VanCamp, respectively.[13] In the poignant scene, Jack tells Emily he’s in love with her. Alongside Perri’s slowed vocals and fitting lyrics a montage of Revenge‘s last season is played.[13] Directed by Elliott Sellers, Perri’s music video was shot on the Revenge set in Los Angeles. With clips from the show, Emily’s love triangle is showcased between her childhood friend Jack and Hamptons’ Daniel Grayson played by Joshua Bowman. It also features shots of Daniel in jail being comforted by a photo of Emily while Emily is at home consoled by Jack.[13] The video also shows Perri interacting with actor Wechsler.[13]

Official version[edit]

The official video featuring Jason Mraz was released on June 30, 2012. Set in a house, the video features Perri dressed in a white dress, soft makeup, and loose waves, while she walks about the house singing before viewers catch a glimpse of Mraz strumming his guitar in presumably, a different location. The two never actually appear on screen together, but the last scene of Perri stripping down pictures and tearing through a wall may leave an impression that she and he will eventually reunite.[14]

“There’s something about the simplicity of the lyrics, with the openness of my heart, I just didn’t want anything dramatic,” she told InStyle of her look, a relaxed little white dress and bare feet. “I wanted classy and simple.” “I wanted to look exactly the way I look right now in this video, in a dress I would wear at home or on stage, in my jewelry, with the minimal makeup I actually wear, and just being me”, she said. “This video is supposed to take you into my reality, not a dream, a real life experience of mine.”[5]

David Hodges is a Grammy award-winning writer/producer/artist hailing from Little Rock, AR.

As the former writer and keyboardist of the band Evanescence, he and his band mates took home Best New Artist as well as the Best Hard Rock Performance trophy for their hit “Bring Me To Life” in 2004. Evanescence’s debut album Fallen has sold over 15 million copies worldwide.

Episode VII – The Age of Non Reason

I love the works of Francis Schaeffer and I have been on the internet reading several blogs that talk about Schaeffer’s work and the work below by Julie Rodgers was really helpful. Schaeffer’s film series “How should we then live?  Wikipedia notes, “According to Schaeffer, How Should We Then Live traces Western history from Ancient Rome until the time of writing (1976) along three lines: the philosophic, scientific, and religious.[3] He also makes extensive references to art and architecture as a means of showing how these movements reflected changing patterns of thought through time. In the film series “WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE HUMAN RACE?” the arguments are presented  against abortion (Episode 1),  infanticide (Episode 2),   euthanasia (Episode 3), and then there is a discussion of the Christian versus Humanist worldview concerning the issue of “the basis for human dignity” in Episode 4 and then in the last episode a close look at the truth claims of the Bible.

I had a full blown existential crisis my junior year in college. Questions were strangling me, and the conservative university I attended only agitated my angst. My friends and I tried to maintain some sort of relationship with God, but we had to wear ear plugs in chapel just to stay sane enough to engage with Him on any meaningful level. And of course I was failing my courses because 11am was just too early to make it out of bed for class.

In a desperate attempt for something real, I boarded a plane bound for a small village in Switzerland called Huemoz. Hidden on the side of a mountain in the snow-capped Swiss Alps was L’Abri, a work study center founded by Francis Schaeffer back in the day. L’Abri was a place for people from all over the world to bring their stories, struggles, messes, and questions—a place to wrestle toward something real. About 30 of the most eccentric people you can imagine from all over the world lived in one large chalet together, called Bellevue, and we wrestled. We wrestled with God, each other, our questions, ourselves. We laughed. We cried, we argued, we read, baked fresh bread, played ping-pong, hiked, knit, gardened, hid bottles of rum and whiskey behind bushes.

L’Abri was the kind of place where almost anything was fair game. There were a few rules: 1.) We had to attend every scheduled event (which included independent study time in the library, work around the house, meals, lectures, and sessions with our tutors). And 2.) We couldn’t consume alcohol in Bellevue in order to keep it a safe place for those who were recovering. Outside of those rules, we were free to simply be. There were Americans, Koreans, Australians, Christians, agnostics, atheists, and those who homeschooled K-12th grade. Regardless of what we were expected to be throughout our entire lives, at L’Abri we were finally free to simply be where we were, and we were loved.

What did “being where we were” entail? My friend Josh modeled this well after a formal lunch where we argued about God’s intention for creation displayed in the Garden of Eden (or something like that). We were all on the balcony laughing and smoking cigarettes later that afternoon when Josh suddenly walked out buck naked with a cigarette in his hand and said: “F— all this theoretical bulls–t; let’s get back to the garden.” Then he sat down in the nude and enjoyed his cigarette. (Since many of you are probably offended by that, I’ll refrain from posting pictures to illustrate the story.)

While I loved the community and pace of life and Swiss Alps and the stimulating conversations, those aren’t what I cherished most about L’Abri. What shattered my life was this: The men and women at L’Abri abandoned a fear-based version of Christianity. They truly believed that if God was big enough to speak the galaxies into existence and small enough to be present with the prayers of little children, then He would be faithful to meet us where we were. We didn’t need guidelines to glide us toward God; we needed an honest encounter with Him on a personal level. That can’t be manufactured.

Most of us had grown up listening to rhetorically polished sermons, seeing Bible stories on felt boards, hearing God loved good little boys and girls. But so much of it seemed ludicrous to us. We didn’t understand why no one seemed troubled by a God who told Abraham to slay His son on an alter. We didn’t see the beauty in the handful of people ushered into an arc by Providence when thousands were brutally bashed against rocks and left for dead. We couldn’t comprehend why all the characters on the felt boards were white right after we sang “Red and yellow, black and white, they are precious in his sight.” And we really didn’t understand why more Christians weren’t bothered by this. Or worse! Why they chastised us for our questions.

I can’t possibly convey the beauty of being let loose in a Christian environment that trusted God loved us enough to meet us in our messes. While many people have encountered God during their bedside prayers, some of us have met him at the bottom of a bottle of rum. Is the honest, messy process what parents wish for their children? Probably not. Is it without tears and scars? Absolutely not. But it was where we were and God meets the real us in real time, not when we’ve finally gotten it right and put our best foot forward. It was beautiful to be in the care of leaders who trusted our gracious God enough to believe He was holding us in His big giant hand no matter what. It was glorious to finally hear we couldn’t create an encounter with Him by behaving or prevent Him from revealing Himself by our debauchery.

I met Jesus that summer. I came back with more questions than answers, but with a genuine faith that He was holding all the broken pieces of my life together—and that He actually loved me. He didn’t love the version of me that I wished I was or the me I thought I was “supposed” to be; He loved me. It’s not until we get outside of a fear-based faith that says we’ve got to control our paths to God that we’re often released to see the mystery that He’s a lot bigger than the little systems we’ve created. And He’s infinitely more frightening and beautiful than the long-haired bearded man on our felt boards.

In his book “Capitalism and Freedom” (1962) Milton Friedman (1912-2006) advocated minimizing the role of government in a free market as a means of creating political and social freedom.

“Well first of all, tell me: Is there some society you know that doesn’t run on greed? You think Russia doesn’t run on greed? You think China doesn’t run on greed? What is greed? Of course, none of us are greedy, it’s only the other fellow who’s greedy. The world runs on individuals pursuing their separate interests. The great achievements of civilization have not come from government bureaus. Einstein didn’t construct his theory under order from a bureaucrat. Henry Ford didn’t revolutionize the automobile industry that way. In the only cases in which the masses have escaped from the kind of grinding poverty you’re talking about, the only cases in recorded history, are where they have had capitalism and largely free trade. If you want to know where the masses are worse off, worst off, it’s exactly in the kinds of societies that depart from that. So that the record of history is absolutely crystal clear, that there is no alternative way so far discovered of improving the lot of the ordinary people that can hold a candle to the productive activities that are unleashed by the free-enterprise system.”

Professor Friedman lectures on the proper role of government in a free society

Here are the proper functions of government according to Milton Friedman:

Friedman states that the basic essential functions of government are to: (1) to defend the nation from coercion from the outside and to defend individuals from coercion by others within the country; (2) to enable the free market by establishing rules for exchange and by providing the medium of exchange; and (3) to respond to neighborhood effects. He says that the government should do only what markets cannot do and should enforce the “rules of the game.” Specifically, the government should maintain law, order, and policy to prevent coercion; preserve the peace and provide for national defense; adjudicate disputes and enforce contracts voluntarily entered into; define the meaning of property rights and provide the means for modifying them and the other “rules of the game”; provide a monetary framework; foster competitive markets and overcome technical monopolies; and address neighborhood effects which are actions affecting others (e.g., pollution) where it is not feasible to charge or reward them. Friedman explains that where the actions of one person affect another, and where the range and value of the effects can be controlled and determined, those involved should pay the price or receive the benefits or compensation for the actions.

Practices once considered unthinkable are now acceptable – abortion, infanticide and euthanasia. The destruction of human life, young and old, is being sanctioned on an ever-increasing scale by the medical profession, by the courts, by parents and by silent Christians. The five episodes in this series examine the sanctity of life as a social, moral and spiritual issue which the Christian must not ignore. The conclusion presents the Christian alternative as the only real solution to man’s problems.

I have gone back and forth with Ark Times liberal bloggers on the issue of abortion, but I am going to try something new. I am going to respond with logical and rational reasons the pro-life view is true. All of this material is from a paper by Scott Klusendorf called FIVE BAD WAYS TO ARGUE ABOUT ABORTION .

The people using the usernames DeathByInches, Venessa and Jennifer Coates Johnson all basically said on 2-8-13 “If you are not a woman then shut up about abortion.” Here is the exact quote from “DeathByInches”: “Saline! You’re points are always about 20 degrees off center. Do you really think it’s a smart idea to print out the ramblings of a MAN’S thoughts and opinion on abortion….which happens 100% of the time to WOMEN, not MEN?”

Here is my response:
 Scott Klusendorf responded to this kind of thinking by stating:

Men are told, “You can’t get pregnant, so leave the abortion issue to women.” Besides its obvious sexism, the statement is seriously flawed for several reasons. First, arguments do not have genders, people do.30 Since many pro-life women use the same arguments offered by pro-life men, it behooves the abortion advocate to answer these arguments without fallaciously attacking a person’s gender.

Second, to be consistent with their own reasoning, abortion advocates would have to concede that Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court case legalizing abortion, was bad law. After all, nine men decided it. They must also call for the dismissal of all male lawyers working for Planned Parenthood and the ACLU on abortion related issues. Since abortion advocates are unwilling to do this, we can restate their argument as follows: “No man can speak on abortion—unless he agrees with us.” Once again, this is a classic case of intolerance.

Third, post-menopausal women cannot naturally get pregnant; must they be silent on the issue? Think of the bizarre rules we could derive from this argument: “Since only generals understand battle, only they should discuss the morality of war.” Or, “Because female sportscasters have never experienced a groin injury, they have no right to broadcast football games on national television.”

Again, abortion advocates must offer arguments to support their position. Attacking people personally, even if those attacks are true, will not make their case or refute ours.

GBCSUMC on Gosnell: What’s abortion got to do with it? #UMC

Many in the world today are taking a long look at the abortion industry because of the May 14, 2013 guilty verdict and life term penalty handed down by a jury (which included 9 out of 12 pro-choice jurors)  to Dr. Kermit Gosnell. During this time of reflection I wanted to put forth some of the pro-life’s best arguments.

In the film series “WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE HUMAN RACE?” the arguments are presented  against abortion (Episode 1),  infanticide (Episode 2),   euthanasia (Episode 3), and then there is a discussion of the Christian versus Humanist worldview concerning the issue of “the basis for human dignity” in Episode 4 and then in the last episode a close look at the truth claims of the Bible.

The General Board of Church and Society (GBCS) has released a statement on the guilty verdict handed down earlier this week in the trial of Kermit Gosnell, who killed numerous newborns and at least one woman. I’m glad the statement from GBCS condemned the horrible crimes committed by the former abortion practitioner as reprehensible. They certainly were. I’m also very glad that the statement does not contradict our United Methodist Social Principles. There are, nevertheless, a variety of features that make the statement inadequate.
Unclear?
The most glaring problem with the GBCS statement is the way it plays dumb on the relevance of the Gosnell trial to the ongoing debate over abortion. GBCS says, “the case has become the latest battlefield in the abortion debate, but it is unclear why.” Really? Really?To suggest Gosnell’s crimes are unrelated to abortion is so remarkably unbelievable that it boggles the mind. The connection between Gosnell and abortion is clear not only to abortion opponents but to a number of abortion advocates also. Each side draws on that connection to support their own aims, of course; the point is that both see the connection . Taking up the substance of those arguments would have indicated a serious wrestling with the significance of the Gosnell proceedings. Unfortunately, the refusal of GBCS to acknowledge why Gosnell matters with regard to abortion only further undermines the Board’s credibility.
Not Quite Accurate
The statement goes on to say that both supporters and opponents of abortion find Gosnell’s crimes reprehensible. This only is accurate to a degree. It would have been more accurate to say that some abortion supporters find Gosnell’s crimes reprehensible. A growing number of abortion advocates are also calling for the legalization of infanticide. Ethicist Peter Singer has been saying this for years, and others are beginning to join him. The key example is the most recent edition of the Journal of Medical Ethics, which is devoted to debating infanticide and contains articles arguing both for and against the killing of newborns. I point to other examples of this trend in a recent piece for The United Methodist Reporter, and you can follow Michael Bird who is chronicling the “Infanticide Blitz”. This is a debate we are now having. Certainly not all supporters of abortion reject infanticide, but GBCS should not lead us to think that supporters of abortion are of one mind with regard to infanticide. Many abortion advocates find Gosnell’s crimes horrific, but the arguments that gave us constitutionally protected abortion are being applied to newborns in a growing number of diverse arenas. The folks at GBCS need to read the relevant journals and websites and do their homework rather more carefully in order to stay on top of this highly important issue.
Does Location Matter?
The GBCS rightfully expresses sorrow over those who died at Gosnell’s hands: “We mourn the tragic loss of life, as well as the pain and loss Dr. Gosnell has caused countless other women and families.” Absolutely.  I do, too. What I find puzzling, though, is that this sentiment seems inconsistent with other work in which GBCS engages. For example, GBCS is a member of the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice (RCRC), an organization that fights for unregulated and unrestricted access to abortion. They have praised abortion as holy and sacred work. So, when I read that GBCS mourns the loss of these little lives, I can’t help but wonder why given their partnership with RCRC in advancing the abortion agenda? Had these babies been located inside their mother’s womb just a few inches in the other direction, GBCS would not have mourned their loss. To the contrary, by affiliating with RCRC, GBCS has insisted on and celebrated the so-called liberty to end the lives of the preborn, even going so far as to suggest that such is the work of the kingdom of God. For the GBCS to argue that children in the womb have no right to life and, at the same time, express their sorrow over the deaths of the newly born is regrettably incoherent.
So, while there are praiseworthy elements in the GBCS statement on Gosnell’s verdict, it is with great sadness I write that it remains woefully inadequate. I love the United Methodist Church, but today I am deeply grieved by it. United Methodists should be able to expect far more from our Boards. The underlying political agenda of GBCS is covered by a veil all too thin and one that is seen through far too easily. Near the end of the statement, GBCS says, “Each of us must give an account to God for what we do (or do not do) for our fellow brothers and sisters.” Indeed, we must, on both accounts.

I have written on the Book of Ecclesiastes and the subject of the meaning of our lives on several occasions on this blog. In this series on Ecclesiastes I hope to show how secular humanist man can not hope to find a lasting meaning to his life in a closed system without bringing God back into the picture. This is the same exact case with Solomon in the Book of Ecclesiastes. Three thousand years ago, Solomon took a look at life “under the sun” in his book of Ecclesiastes. Christian scholar Ravi Zacharias has noted, “The key to understanding the Book of Ecclesiastes is the term ‘under the sun.’ What that literally means is you lock God out of a closed system, and you are left with only this world of time plus chance plus matter.”

Let me show you some inescapable conclusions if you choose to live without God in the picture. Solomon came to these same conclusions when he looked at life “under the sun.”

  1. Death is the great equalizer (Eccl 3:20, “All go to the same place; all come from dust, and to dust all return.”)
  2. Chance and time have determined the past, and they will determine the future.  (Ecclesiastes 9:11-13)
  3. Power reigns in this life, and the scales are not balanced(Eccl 4:1)
  4. Nothing in life gives true satisfaction without God including knowledge (1:16-18), ladies and liquor (2:1-3, 8, 10, 11), and great building projects (2:4-6, 18-20).

You can only find a lasting meaning to your life by looking above the sun and bring God back into the picture.

How would you explain the unique message of each OT wisdom book as it anticipates Jesus?

I hope these Christological summaries below don’t come off as too simplistic. The book shows, I hope, some of the complexities as to the connections I made.

Proverbs: For our own good and the glory of God, the book of Proverbs invites and instructs God’s covenant people—especially young men—to embrace wisdom. For Christians, such wisdom comes through fearing God’s beloved, the Lord Jesus Christ (Eph. 5:21), and walking in his wisdom.

Ecclesiastes: Ecclesiastes is about finding the goodness of God while living within the vanity of this world. Such goodness or “wisdom” is found only through a relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. This relationship involves trusting in Christ and heeding his commands, which brings rest, justice, and joy.

Job: The book of Job prefigures the purposeful sufferings of Christ. That is, the story of God’s servant Job prepares us for the story of Jesus, the suffering servant, who in his passion and death shows how innocent suffering can show forth the justice of God.

I have gone back and forth and back and forth with many liberals on the Arkansas Times Blog on many issues such as abortion, human rights, welfare, poverty, gun control  and issues dealing with popular culture . This time around I have discussed morality with the Ark Times Bloggers and have used the examples given in Woody Allen’s movie “Crimes and Misdemeanors” to do so. With out God in the picture to punish the evildoers  in an afterlife, then can people do anything they want because “might makes right.”

Without the infinite-personal God of the Bible to reveal moral absolutes then man is left to embrace moral relativism. In a time plus chance universe man is reduced to a machine and can not find a place for values such as love. Both of Francis Schaeffer’s film series have tackled these subjects and he shows how this is reflected in the arts.

I sent a cassette tape by Adrian Rogers to the famous atheist Antony Flew in 1992 and he wrote me back and said he enjoyed the sermon very much and listened to it with great interest. 

Here are the points from that sermon:







What evidence is there that the Bible is in fact God’s Word?
I want to give you five reasons to affirm the Bible is the Word of God.

First, I believe the Bible is the Word of God because of its scientific accuracy. The Truth of the Word of God tells us that God “hangeth the earth upon nothing” (Job 26:7). How did Job know that the earth hung in space before the age of modern astronomy and space travel? The Holy Spirit told him. The scientists of Isaiah’s day didn’t know the topography of the earth, but Isaiah said, “It is [God] that sitteth upon the circle of the earth” (Isaiah 40:22). The word for “circle” here means a globe or sphere. How did Isaiah know that God say upon the circle of the earth? By divine inspiration.

Secondly, the Bible is affirmed through historical accuracy. Do you remember the story about the handwriting on the wall that is found in the fifth chapter of Daniel? Belshazzar hosted a feast with a thousand of his lords and ladies. Suddenly, a gruesome hand appeared out of nowhere and began to write on a wall. The king was disturbed and asked for someone to interpret the writing. Daniel was found and gave the interpretation. After the interpretation, “Then commanded Belshazzar, and they clothed Daniel with scarlet, and put a chain of gold about his neck, and made a proclamation concerning him, that he should be the third ruler in the kingdom.” (Daniel 5:29). Basing their opinion on Babylonian records, the historians claim this never happened. According to the records, the last king of Babylon was not Belshazzar, but a man named Nabonidas. And so, they said, the Bible is in error. There wasn’t a record of a king named Belshazzar. Well, the spades of archeologists continued to do their work. In 1853, an inscription was found on a cornerstone of a temple built by Nabonidas, to the god Ur, which read: “May I, Nabonidas, king of Babylon, not sin against thee. And may reverence for thee dwell in the heart of Belshazzar, my first-born favorite son.” From other inscriptions, it was learned that Belshazzar and Nabonidas were co-regents. Nabonidas traveled while Belshazzar stayed home to run the kingdom. Now that we know that Belshazzar and Nabonidas were co-regents, it makes sense that Belshazzar would say that Daniel would be the third ruler. What a marvelous nugget of truth tucked away in the Word of God!

Third, from Genesis to Revelation, the Bible reads as one book. And there is incredible unity to the Bible. The Bible is one book, and yet it is made up of 66 books, was written by at least 40 different authors over a period of about 1600 years, in 13 different countries and on three different continents. It was written in at least three different languages by people in all professions. The Bible forms one beautiful temple of truth that does not contradict itself theologically, morally, ethically, doctrinally, scientifically, historically, or in any other way.

Fourth, did you know the Bible is the only book in the world that has accurate prophecy? When you read the prophecies of the Bible, you simply have to stand back in awe. There are over 300 precise prophecies that deal with the Lord Jesus Christ in the Old Testament that are fulfilled in the New Testament. To say that these are fulfilled by chance is an astronomical impossibility.

Finally, the Bible is not a book of the month, but the Book of the Ages. First Peter 1:25 says: “But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the Word which by the gospel is preached unto you.” No book has ever had as much opposition as the Bible. Men have laughed at it, scorned it, burned it, ridiculed it, and made laws against it. But the Word of God has survived. And it is applicable today as much as it was yesterday and will be tomorrow.

It’s so majestically deep that scholars could swim and never touch the bottom. Yet so wonderfully shallow that a little child could come and get a drink of water without fear of drowning. That is God’s precious, holy Word. The Word of God. Know it. Believe it. It is True.

That is what Romans chapter 1 teaches us!!!! God put that conscience in you that causes you to know deep down that God exists.

A friend of mine is a street preacher and he preaches on the Santa Monica Promenade in California. 

During the Q/A sessions he does have lots of atheists that enjoy their time at the mic. During this time my friend always quotes Romans 1:19 “For that which is known about God is evident to them and made plain in their inner consciousness, because God has shown it to them.” Then he tells the atheist that he already knows that God exists but he has been suppressing that knowledge in unrighteousness. This usually infuriates the atheist.

My friend is actually thinking about coming up with something that would really challenge the atheists and cause them to pause. Recently he asked me if I thought it would be a good idea to set up a lie detector test and see if any of these atheists can beat it. (He knew that I had done a lot of research in the past on this very issue.)

Nelson Price in The Emmanuel Factor (1987) tells the story about Brown Trucking Company in Georgia who used to give polygraph tests to their job applicants. However, in part of the test the operator asked, “Do you believe in God?” In every instance when a professing atheist answered “No,” the test showed the person to be lying.

Dr Adrian Rogers used to tell this same story to illustrate Romans 1:19 and it was his conclusion that “there is no such thing anywhere on earth as a true atheist. If a man says he doesn’t believe in God, then he is lying. God has put his moral consciousness into every man’s heart, and a man has to try to kick his conscience to death to say he doesn’t believe in God.”

It is true that polygraph tests for use in hiring were banned by Congress in 1988. However, Mr and Mrs Claude Brown on Aug 25, 1994 wrote me a letter confirming that over 15,000 applicants had taken the polygraph test and EVERY TIME SOMEONE SAID THEY DID NOT BELIEVE IN GOD, THE MACHINE SAID THEY WERE LYING.

It had been difficult to catch up to the Browns. I had heard about them from Dr. Rogers’ sermon but I did not have enough information to locate them. Dr. Rogers referred me to Dr. Nelson Price and Dr. Price’s office told me that Claude Brown lived in Atlanta. After writing letters to all 9 of the entries for Claude Brown in the Atlanta telephone book, I finally got in touch with the Browns.

Adrian Rogers also pointed out that the Bible does not recognize the theoretical atheist. Psalms 14:1: The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God.” Dr Rogers notes, “The fool is treating God like he would treat food he did not desire in a cafeteria line. ‘No broccoli for me!’ ” In other words, the fool just doesn’t want God in his life and is a practical atheist, but not a theoretical atheist.

I contacted several Southern Baptist Theologians concerning the issue of Psalms 14:1 back in 1995 and received helpful responses from Dr. Lewis A. Drummond, Beeson Divinity School, Samford, Dr. Stephen J. Andrews, Southeastern Baptist Seminary, Dr. Harold Mosley, New Orleans Bapt Seminary, Dr. Gerald L. Keown, Southern Baptist Seminary,Dr. George L. Klein, Criswell College, and Dr. M. Pierce Matheney, Midwestern Baptist Seminary.

Some responded that it is was possible to be a theoretical atheist while some said that the Bible only recognized the practical atheist

Notice also in the movie “Crimes and Misdemeanors” that even though Judah and his brother Jack said they did not believe in God and they planned to kill Judah’s mistress, once the deed is done Judah has a hard time shaking the idea that he will be punished because their still a spark in him telling him that he will be punished by God. 

JACK: I just wanted you to know everything came out fine. It’s over and done with, so you can forget about it.

JUDAH: Oh, my God. Oh, my God. I’m in shock, Jack.

JACK: Judah, I’m telling you, it’s like the whole thing never existed. It’s a small burglary. Nothing more. Yeah. So go on back to your life and… put it behind you.

JUDAH: I can’t speak. I need a drink. What am I gonna do? I’ve got guests here now. Jack… God have mercy on us, Jack.
