A Right View of Repentance
“And we know that the judgment of God rightly falls upon those who practice such things. 3 But do you suppose this, O man, when you pass judgment on those who practice such things and do the same yourself, that you will escape the judgment of God? Or do you think lightly of the riches of His kindness and tolerance and patience, not knowing that the kindness of God leads you to repentance? But because of your stubbornness and unrepentant heart you are storing up wrath for yourself in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God, who will render to each person according to his deeds.” Romans 2:2-6Not only does repentance include physically turning away from sin; it also includes a mental or intellectual change in the way we view sin. When we repent of a certain sin, we agree with God that what we did was wrong. Therefore, we willfully choose to step away from sin.

Repentance is not an emotional act. However, it does involve our emotional well-being. True repentance surfaces feelings of both remorse and regret over the obvious breach we have allowed to invade our lives. Sin separates us from fellowship with God, while repentance restores our intimacy with Him.

Forgiveness for sin was provided once and for all by Jesus Christ at Calvary. When God views us, He acknowledges the atoning death of His Son as payment for our sins. Our acknowledgment of those same sins allows us to personally receive and enjoy His complete forgiveness.

Some Christians think they can enjoy the security of being saved by God’s grace while living life with a sinful vengeance. But true salvation denotes a humble spirit and a repentant heart. There is no way to live a victorious Christian life while coveting sin. Ask God to help you come to grips with any sin in your life. His restoration is always available through repentance.

I know that you receive 20,000 letters a day and that you actually read 10 of them every day. I really do respect you for trying to get a pulse on what is going on out here.

As discussed yesterday, the most important number in Obama’s budget is that the burden of government spending will be at least $2 trillion higher in 10 years if the President’s plan is enacted.

But there are also some very unsightly warts in the revenue portion of the President’s budget. Americans for Tax Reform has a good summary of the various tax hikes, most of which are based on punitive, class-warfare ideology.

In this post, I want to focus on the President’s proposals to increase both the capital gains tax rate and the tax rate on dividends.

Most of the discussion is focusing on the big increase in tax rates for 2013, particularly when you include the 3.8 tax on investment income that was part of Obamacare. If the President is successful, the tax on capital gains will climb from 15 percent this year to 23.8 percent next year, and the tax on dividends will skyrocket from 15 percent to 43.4 percent.

But these numbers understate the true burden because they don’t include the impact of double taxation, which exists when the government cycles some income through the tax code more than one time. As this chart illustrates, this means a much higher tax burden on income that is saved and invested.

The accounting firm of Ernst and Young just produced a report looking at actual tax rates on capital gains and dividends, once other layers of tax are included. The results are very sobering. The United States already has one of the most punitive tax regimes for saving and investment.

Looking at this first chart, it seems quite certain that we would have the worst system for dividends if Obama’s budget is enacted.

The good news, so to speak, is that we probably wouldn’t have the worst capital gains tax system if the President’s plan is enacted. I’m just guessing, but it looks like Italy (gee, what a role model) would still be higher.

Let’s now contemplate the potential impact of the President’s tax plan. I am dumbfounded that anybody could look at these charts and decide that America will be in better shape with higher tax rates on dividends and capital gains.

This isn’t just some abstract issue about competitiveness. As I explain in this video, every single economic theory — even Marxism and socialism — agrees that saving and investment are key for long-run growth and higher living standards.

So why is he doing this? I periodically run into people who are convinced that the President is deliberately trying to ruin the nation. I tell them this is nonsense and that there’s no reason to believe elaborate conspiracies.

President Obama is simply doing the same thing that President Bush did: Making bad decisions because of perceived short-run political advantage.

Dear Senator Pryor, why not pass the Balanced Budget Amendment? (“Thirsty Thursday”, Open letter to Senator Pryor)

Dear Senator Pryor,

Why not pass the Balanced Budget Amendment? As you know that federal deficit is at all time high (1.6 trillion deficit with revenues of 2.2 trillion and spending at 3.8 trillion).

On my blog www.HaltingArkansasLiberalswithTruth.com I took you at your word and sent you over 100 emails with specific spending cut ideas. However, I did not see any of them in the recent debt deal that Congress adopted. Now I am trying another approach. Every week from now on I will send you an email explaining different reasons why we need the Balanced Budget Amendment. It will appear on my blog on “Thirsty Thursday” because the government is always thirsty for more money to spend.

In this paper below you will read:

America cannot raise taxes to continue overspending, because tax hikes shrink our economy and grow our government. America cannot borrow more to continue overspending, because borrowing puts an enormous financial burden on the American children of tomorrow. A BBA will help address this long-term problem because, after the multi-year process for securing ratification of the BBA by three-quarters of the states, the BBA will keep federal spending under control in subsequent years.

Washington has not been able to cut spending so the BBA is needed to force Washington to do the right thing. Your father David Pryor was the governor of Arkansas and he knew what it meant to have a balanced budget by mandate.

Balanced Budget Amendment: Cut Spending Later, Cut Spending Now

Two key principles should govern congressional consideration of an amendment to the U.S. Constitution that requires the federal government to balance its budget:

  • First Principle: A Balanced Budget Amendment (BBA) is important to help bring long-term fiscal responsibility to America’s future when the BBA takes effect after ratification by three-quarters of the state legislatures; it is equally important for Congress to cut spending nowto address the current overspending crisis.
  • Second Principle: An effective BBA will include three elements to: (a) control spending, taxation, and borrowing, (b) ensure the defense of America, and (c) enforce the requirement to balance the budget.

Cuts for the Future, Cuts for the Present

Federal spending is out of control—both obligations for the future and spending right now.

Congress must get spending under control in the long term. America cannot raise taxes to continue overspending, because tax hikes shrink our economy and grow our government. America cannot borrow more to continue overspending, because borrowing puts an enormous financial burden on the American children of tomorrow. A BBA will help address this long-term problem because, after the multi-year process for securing ratification of the BBA by three-quarters of the states, the BBA will keep federal spending under control in subsequent years.

Congress also must get spending under control in the short term. Federal overspending is not simply about the future, but also about the present. Under the President’s Fiscal Year 2012 Budget Submission, measured by the Congressional Budget Office, the federal government will spend $1.2 trillion more than it will take in, a gargantuan burden of additional debt forced on future generations to pay current bills.

Thus, America needs both a Balanced Budget Amendment for the long term and deep cuts in federal spending starting right now, without waiting for a BBA to take effect. As Congress considers budget resolutions, appropriations bills, appropriations continuing resolutions, and debt limit bills, Congress should take every opportunity now to cut federal spending, including for the biggest overspending problem: the ever-growing entitlement programs.

Congress should recognize that the best way to encourage state legislatures to ratify a BBA is to demonstrate, through consistent congressional cuts in spending, that the American people have the will to accept spending cuts to balance the budget.

Elements of a Successful Balanced Budget Amendment

A successful BBA will:

  • Control spending, taxing, and borrowing through a requirement to balance the budget.The BBA should cap annual spending at a level not exceeding either: (a) a specified percentage of the value of goods and services the economy produces in a year (known as gross domestic product, or GDP), or (b) the level of revenues. To ensure that Congress cannot simply balance the budget by continually raising taxes instead of cutting overspending, the BBA should require Congress to act by supermajority votes if Members wish to raise taxes. Any authority the BBA grants Congress to deal with economic slowdowns, by waiving temporarily the requirement that spending not exceed the GDP percentage or revenue level, should specify the amount of above-revenue spending allowed and require supermajority votes.
  • Defend America. The BBA should allow Congress by supermajority votes to waive temporarily compliance with the balanced budget requirement when waiver is essential to pay for the defense of Americans from attack.
  • Enforce the balanced budget requirement. The BBA should provide for its own enforcement, but must specifically exclude courts from any enforcement of the BBA, so unelected judges do not make policy decisions such as determining the appropriate level of funding for federal programs. A government that spends money in excess of its revenues must borrow to cover the difference. Therefore, to enforce the requirement to balance the budget, the BBA should prohibit government issuance of debt, except when necessary to finance a temporary deficit resulting from congressional supermajority votes discussed above.

America is in a fiscal crisis. Our government spends too much. Overspending must stop immediately. Overspending will stop only if Congress cuts spending now, including with respect to the ever-expanding entitlement programs. For the future, Congress and three-quarters of state legislatures can adopt and ratify a Balanced Budget Amendment to the U.S. Constitution to anchor the American willingness to live within a balanced budget.

1. About God

The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of God. He is also referred to in scripture as the Spirit of Jesus.

2 cartoons illustrate the fate of socialism from the Cato Institute

Cato Institute scholar Dan Mitchell is right about Greece and the fate of socialism:

In my speeches, especially when talking about the fiscal crisis in Europe (or the future fiscal crisis in America), I often warn that the welfare state reaches a point-of-no-return when the number of people riding in the wagon begins to outnumber the number of people pulling the wagon.

To be more specific, if more than 50 percent of the population is dependent on government (employed in the bureaucracy, living off welfare, receiving pensions, etc), it becomes rather difficult to form a coalition to fix the mess. This may explain why Greek politicians have resisted significant reforms, even though the nation faces a fiscal death spiral.

But you don’t need me to explain this relationship. One of our Cato interns, Silvia Morandotti, used her artistic skills to create two images (click pictures for better resolution) that show what a welfare state looks like when it first begins and what it eventually becomes.

These images are remarkably accurate. The welfare state starts with small programs targeted at a handful of genuinely needy people. But as  politicians figure out the electoral benefits of expanding programs and people figure out the that they can let others work on their behalf, the ratio of producers to consumers begins to worsen.

Eventually, even though the moochers and looters should realize that it is not in their interest to over-burden the people pulling the wagon, the entire system breaks down.

Then things get really interesting. Small nations such as Greece can rely on permanent bailouts from bigger countries and the IMF, but sooner or later, as larger nations begin to go bankrupt, that approach won’t be feasible.

I often conclude my speeches by joking with the audience that it’s time to stock up on canned goods, bottled water, and ammo. Many people, I’m finding, don’t think that line very funny.

The Department of Health and Human Services administers the huge and fast-growing Medicare and Medicaid programs. These programs fuel rising health costs, distort health markets, and are plagued by waste and fraud. The department also runs an array of other expensive subsidy programs, including Head Start, TANF, and LIHEAP. Growth in HHS spending is creating a federal financial crisis, and the 2010 health care law sadly makes the situation worse.

The department will spend $910 billion in 2011, or $7,710 for every U.S. household. It employs 68,000 workers and runs more than 420 subsidy programs.

  • Medicare Reforms. Medicare should be transformed into a system based on vouchers, individual savings, and competitive insurance markets.
  • Medicaid Reforms. Federal spending on low-income health care should be converted to block grants for the states.
  • TANF and Welfare Spending. Welfare reforms in 1996 created Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, but this sort of aid should be provided by private charities.
  • Head Start and Other Subsidies. HHS funds a vast array of other subsidy programs, many of which are wasteful and ineffective.
  • 2010 Health Care Legislation. The law expanded Medicaid, added new taxes and subsidies, created new bureaucracies, and did little to reduce cost growth in health care.

Born in Fairbanks, Alaska in 1956, Dr. Bowman accepted Jesus Christ as a teenager in Alaska.  He holds a Doctor of Ministry degree in New Testament Interpretation from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Ft. Knowing Jesus

Do you know for certain that you have Eternal Life and that you will go to heaven when you die? God wants you to be sure:

The Bible says, “I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.”
(1 John 5:13)

Another question to consider is:

Suppose you were standing before God right now and He asked you, “Why should I let you into my heaven?” What do you think you would say?

You may not know what you should say, but you can know, because God loves you and has a purpose for your life.

The Bible states it this way, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish, but have eternal life.”
(John 3:16)

God’s Purpose is that We Have Eternal Life
  • We receive eternal life as a free gift.

               “The gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” (Romans 6:23)

  • We can live a full and meaningful life right now.

    “I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more
     abundantly.”  (John 10:10)

  • We will spend eternity with Jesus in heaven.

    “If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be
     with me that you also may be where I am.”  (John 14:3)

Eternal life gives meaning to life. Yet, our sinful nature keeps us from fulfilling God’s purpose for our lives.

 

Our Need is to Understand Our Problem

  •  We are all sinners by nature and by choice.
                “All have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23)
  • We cannot save ourselves.
                “Not by works, so that no one can boast.” (Ephesians 2:9)
  • We deserve death and hell.
                “The wages of sin is death.” (Romans 6:23)
It is true that:
God is holy and just and must punish sin, yet He loves us and has provided forgiveness for our sin. Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no one comes to the Father, except through me.”  (John 14:6)
The good news is that God has provided for the forgiveness of our sins!
 

 

God’s Provision
is Jesus Christ

  • Jesus is God and became man.
   “In the beginning was the Word,
    and the Word was with God,
    and the Word was God… And
    the Word was made flesh, and
    dwelt among us.” (John 1:1,14)
  • Jesus died for us on the cross.
    “Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust that he might 
                bring us to God.” (1 Peter 3:18)
  • Jesus was resurrected from the dead.
                “(Jesus) was delivered for our offenses, and was raised again for our 
                justification.” (Romans 4:25)
That is good news, but the only way Jesus can affect our lives is for us to receive Him. The Bible says, “As many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name.” (John 1:12)
The choice is ours.
 

Our Response is to Receive Jesus

  •  We must repent of our sin.
                “Repent , then and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out.” (Acts 3:19)
Repentance is not just feeling sorry for our sin.
        “Repent and turn to God, and prove
        their repentance by their deeds.” 
        (Acts 26:20)
Repentance is turning to God through Jesus and away from our sin. It’s like making a U-Turn. As we turn…
  • We must place our faith in Jesus.

             “By grace you have been saved,
            through faith; and this not from
            yourselves: it is the gift of God.”
            (Ephesians 2:8).

    Faith is not just believing facts about Jesus. ” You believe that there is one God.  Good!  Even the demons believe that – and shudder.” (James 2:19).

    Faith is trusting in Jesus.  It’s like taking a trip on an airplane. You will never make the trip until you trust the plane enough to board it.  To trust in Jesus means…

  • We must trust Jesus as Lord.

    “If you confess with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.  For it is with your heart that you beleive and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved.” (Romans 10:9-10)

    Surrendering to Jesus as Lord is not just saying we give our lives to Jesus. ” Not every one who says to me, Lord, Lord, will enter the kingdom of heaven; but only he who does the will of my Father, who is in heaven.” (Matthew 7:21).

    Surrendering to Jesus as Lord means giving Jesus control of our lives. That is, we must give all we know of ourselves to all we know of God.

    To give Jesus control of our lives is like driving down the highway with another person. As long as you are driving, you are in control. If you realize you don’t know the way, but the other person does, you might say, “You take the wheel and drive.” Then the other person is in control and the two of you take the route he or she chooses.

    As evidence of giving Jesus control, you will want to identify with Him. The New Testament way of identification is to confess Jesus publicly (Matthew 10:32-33) and to follow Him in baptism and church membership (Acts 2:41).

 

Three Important Questions

  1. Does what you have been reading make sense to you?
  2. Is there any reason you would not be willing to receive God’s gift of eternal life?
  3. Are you willing to turn from your sin and place your faith in Jesus right now?
The Bible says, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” (Romans 10:13)
You need to ask the Lord Jesus to save you.
Read this prayer and see if it says what you want to say to God.

You Need to Grow as a Christian

The Bible calls new Christians “babes in Christ.” (1 Corinthians 3:1)  Without certain essentials, babies will not develop normally.
The church is to a new Christian what the home and family are to a baby.

You identify with your new family by confessing Jesus publicly and by experiencing believer’s baptism. 

         “Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were
         added about three thousand souls.” (Acts 2:41)

Attend church Sunday and share with the pastor that you want to be baptized and become a member of the church.
Praying is to spiritual life what breathing is to physical life. Breathing must be regular and continuous. The Bible says, “Pray without ceasing.” (1 Thessalonians 5:17). Learn to be specific in your praying. “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9)
God’s Word is to a new Christian what good food is to a baby. Good food is a daily requirement for proper growth. “As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow.” (1 Peter 2:2)
Learning to witness is to a new Christian what learning to talk is to a baby. Christ commands us to share the good news with others. “You shall be witnesses.” (Acts 1:8)

Arkansas Times praises good results of Obamacare

Gerard Matthews wrote on March 21, 2012 in the Arkansas Times:

Children cannot be denied coverage because of a pre-existing condition. Young people can stay on their parents’ health insurance plan until they are 26 years old. Preventive services, which will ultimately help control health care costs, have been added to some plans at no extra charge. Those are real changes — which can have a huge, positive impact on people’s lives — that have nothing to do with petty attempts to pin a seemingly unpopular program to the president right before election time. 

Take these things away, and folks are likely to notice. A lot of folks. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the Affordable Care Act has had the following impact on Arkansans: 865,000 people who already had private insurance no longer have a lifetime limit on their health insurance plans; 439,000 people received added preventive services from their insurance companies without cost-sharing (that’s including 110,000 children); 380,845 Medicare recipients have received preventive services; 23,837 young people have acquired health care coverage by staying on their parents’ plans.

I see a few problems with this assessment. Why did Matthews fail to mention that Obamacare will not give everyone coverage!!! Also he failed to mention the religious values that Obamacare would trangress or the drop in quality we will be seeing or the millions that will be shoved into an already bankrupt Medicaid system that will bankrupt Arkansas’ state government.

There is always a cost and somebody always pays. The real question is how efficient is the government versus the private market. Take Obama’s lightbulb.

I’ve written about the government’s war on consumer-friendly light bulbs (and also similar attacks on working toilets and washing machines that actually clean), so I’m generally not surprised by bureaucratic nonsense.

But even I’m shocked the federal government gave an affordability award for a light bulb that costs $50. I’m not making this up. Here’s a blurb from ABC News.

The U.S. government has awarded appliance-maker Philips $10 million for devising an “affordable” alternative to today’s standard 60-watt incandescent bulb. That standard bulb sells for around $1. The Philips alternative sells for $50. Of course, the award-winner is no ordinary bulb. It uses only one-sixth the energy of an incandescent. And it lasts 30,000 hours–about 30 times as long. In fact, if you don’t drop it, it may last 10 years or more. But only the U.S. Government (in this case, the Department of Energy) could view a $50 bulb as cheap.

Isn’t that wonderful? My tax dollars were used to reward a company that produced a light bulb I can’t afford.

Obamacare, Two Years Later

This week marks two years since of the passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, and if the Obama administration has chosen to all but ignore the second anniversary of Obamacare, the rest of us should pause and reflect on just what a monumental failure of policy the health-care-reform law has been.

What’s more, it has been a failure on its own terms. After all, when health-care reform was passed, we were promised that it would do three things: 1) provide health-insurance coverage for all Americans; 2) reduce insurance costs for individuals, businesses, and government; and 3) increase the quality of health care and the value received for each dollar of health-care spending. At the same time, the president and the law’s supporters in Congress promised that the legislation would not increase the federal-budget deficit or unduly burden the economy. And it would do all these things while letting those of us who were happy with our current health insurance keep it unchanged. Two years in, we can see that none of these things is true.

Obamacare is a costly and dangerous failure.

For example, we now know that, contrary to claims made when the bill passed, the law will not come close to achieving universal coverage. In fact, as time goes by, it looks as if the bill will cover fewer and fewer people than advertised. According to a report from the Congressional Budget Office released last week, Obamacare will leave 27 million Americans uninsured by 2022. This represents an increase of 2–4 million uninsured over previous reports. Moreover, it should be noted that, of the 23 million Americans who will gain coverage under Obamacare, 17 million will not be covered by real insurance, but will simply be dumped into the Medicaid system, with all its problems of access and quality. Thus, only about 20 million Americans will receive actual insurance coverage under Obamacare. That’s certainly an improvement over the status quo, but it’s also a far cry from universal coverage — and not much bang for the buck, given Obamacare’s ever-rising cost.

At the same time, the legislation is a major failure when it comes to controlling costs. While we were once told that health-care reform would “bend the cost curve down,” we now know that Obamacare will actually increase U.S. health-care spending. This should come as no surprise: If you are going to provide more benefits to more people, it is going to cost you more money. The law contained few efforts to actually contain health-care costs, and the CBO now reports that many of the programs it did contain, such as disease management and care coordination, will not actually reduce costs. As the CBO noted, “in nearly every program involving disease management and care coordination, spending was either unchanged or increased relative to the spending that would have occurred in the absence of the program, when the fees paid to the participating organization were considered.”

This failure to control costs means that the law will add significantly to the already-crushing burden of government spending, taxes, and debt. According to the CBO, Obamacare will cost $1.76 trillion by 2022. To be fair, some media outlets misreported this new estimate as a doubling of the law’s originally estimated cost of $940 billion. In reality, most of the increased cost estimate is the result, not of increased programmatic costs, but of an extra two years of implementation. Still, many observers warned at the time that the original $940 million estimate was misleading because it included only six years of actual expenditures, with the ten-year budget window. The new estimate is, therefore, a more accurate measure of how expensive this law will be. Yet even this estimate covers only eight years of implementation. And it leaves out more than $115 billion in important implementation costs, as well as costs of the so-called doc fix. It also double-counts Social Security taxes and Medicare savings. Some studies suggest a better estimate of Obamacare’s real ten-year cost could run as high as $2.7–3 trillion. And this does not even include the over $4.3 trillion in costs shifted to businesses, individuals, and state governments.

All this spending means that we will pay much more in debt and taxes. But we will also pay more in insurance premiums. Once upon a time, the president promised us that health-care reform would lower our insurance premiums by $2,500 per year. That claim has long since been abandoned. Insurance premiums are continuing to rise at record rates. And, while there are many factors driving premiums up, Obamacare itself is one of them. According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, insurance premiums had been rising at roughly 5 percent per year pre-Obamacare. That jumped to 9 percent last year. And roughly half that four-percentage-point increase can be directly attributed to Obamacare. Even Jonathan Gruber of MIT, one of the architects of both Obamacare and Romneycare, now admits that many individuals will end up paying more for insurance than they would have without the reform — even after taking into account government subsidies — and that those increases will be substantial. According to Gruber, “after the application of tax subsidies, 59 percent of the individual market will experience an average premium increase of 31 percent.”

Finally, if the past two years should have taught us anything, it is that we may not be able to keep our current insurance, even if we are happy with it. The CBO suggests that as many as 20 million workers could lose their employer-provided health insurance as a result of Obamacare. Instead, they will be dumped into government-run insurance exchanges. And, the recent dust-up over insurance coverage for contraceptives is a clear illustration of how the government will now be designing insurance plans for all of us. Regardless of how one feels about the contraceptive mandate itself, it is just the tip of the iceberg as government mandates tell employers what insurance they must provide, and tell us what insurance we must buy, even if that insurance is more expensive, contains benefits we don’t want, or violates our consciences.

Next week, Obamacare will slouch its way to the Supreme Court. How the justices decide will be based on questions of constitutional law. Their decision will set a crucial precedent in setting the boundaries between government power and individual rights. But regardless of whether the Court upholds Obamacare or strikes it down, in whole or in part, we should understand that, simply as a matter of health-care reform, Obamacare is a costly and dangerous failure.

Bill Purvis’ personal testimony of how his life was dramatically changed after he was brutally attacked and nearly killed in 1974.

Our Pastor

Bill Purvis was born on May 16, 1956 in Okinawa, Japan and grew up in Eufaula, Alabama. Two weeks prior to his spiritual conversion, a young witness for Christ would tell Bill, “Everything you are looking for can be found in Jesus”. On April 28, 1974, Bill would be stabbed 3 times with a butcher knife and left for dead. It was in his dying state that he repented of his sins and cried out to God, receiving Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Savior. That became the turning point of his life. His transformation resulted in an undeniable love for God and an urgency to tell others of Jesus. While a Business Administration student at Opelika State College, (now Southern Union College) he sensed a definite call to ministry one year after his conversion.

He went on to earn the following degrees from Luther Rice Seminary:

  • Master of Arts, (M.A.)
  • Master of Divinity, (M.Div.) Magna Cum Laude
  • Doctor of Ministry, (D.Min.) Magna Cum Laude

He also holds an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from The Southern California Theological Seminary.

Pastor Bill Purvis Testimony – Part 2

 
  He served almost 7 years successfully as a youth pastor in three churches where each youth ministry experienced growth and favor from God.

These three churches were:

  • Unity Baptist Church, 1976-78, where he served under Rev. Daniel Jones. He was ordained to ministry on October 11, 1977. It was under this pastor that he developed a passion for evangelism.
  • Cascade Hills, 1978-80, where he served under Dr. Jim Lee. It was under this pastor that he grew in his understanding of Bible doctrines. He also married Deborah Michelle Raybon, of Pinellas Park, Florida on July 1, 1980.
  • Pinehurst Baptist Church, 1980-83, where he served under Dr. Tony R. Dickerson. It was under this pastor that he learned skills of administration, exegetical preaching, and of working on a large staff team.

Looking back today, Bill clearly sees the guiding hand of God in his life through these experiences and holds each of these pastors in high regard.

On Easter Sunday morning of April, 1983, with only 32 people present, Bill and Debbie were called to the Cascade Hills Church of Columbus, Georgia as Senior Pastor. The membership has grown today to exceed 8,000. His ministry at Cascade Hills has been blessed with uncommon anointing.

If asked to this day about his life or ministry, his response is; “God has been very good to me in more ways than I ever deserved or could imagine. I’m humbled by his undeniable love for me and grateful for His grace that I always find near”.

Right. Because it’s that kind of attitude that has given us a federal budget of $3.8 trillion, up more than 100 percent in a decade, and spending at permanently higher levels of GDP:

Evangelicals worship (Part 6, Castle Hills First Baptist Church, San Antonio)

I grew up at Bellevue Baptist in Memphis where Adrian Rogers was the pastor and he used to have Jack Taylor the pastor of Castle Hills First Baptist Church in to speak and the message was always very practical and helpful. Also our youth director, Dan Carter, came from Castle Hills First Baptist Church and he served at Bellevue from 1976 to 1981. He had a major impact on me.

  • The Good News is that God Loves you and wants to be with you now
    and forever. 
  • The bad news is that you and I have both failed God at some point in
    our lives…we are sinners. 
  • The central message of the whole Bible is that Jesus died to forgive my sin so I would not be cut off from God. 
  • The fourth truth is: God wants to have a relationship of trust with you.
  • It only takes a little step of faith and God will do the rest.
