Open letter to President Obama (Part 449)

(Emailed to White House on 4-9-13.)

President Obama c/o The White House 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW Washington, DC 20500

Dear Mr. President,

I know that you receive 20,000 letters a day and that you actually read 10 of them every day. I really do respect you for trying to get a pulse on what is going on out here.

Mr. President Paul Greenberg used to be pro-abortion just like you but he met a man named Mike Huckabee that challenged him on that and he changed his view. I have included Greenberg’s story below.

Dr. C. Everett Koop on Baby Doe, euthanasia, abortion

On 2-25-13 we lost a great man when we lost Dr. C. Everett Koop. I have written over and over the last few years quoting Dr. C. Everett Koop and his good friend Francis Schaeffer. They both came together for the first time in 1973 when Dr. Koop operated on Schaeffer’s daughter and as a result they became close friends. That led to their involvement together in the book and film series “WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE HUMAN RACE?” in 1979.

The surgeon general of the United States needn’t be a surgeon. And he may be a general — or admiral — only in name. The rank is essentially a civil office — despite the dress whites and gold braid. Indeed, it was largely an honorary title before Ronald Reagan chose a physician by the name of C. Everett Koop for the appointment.

Dr. Koop, who died last week at the grand old age of 96, was indeed a surgeon and a fine one (his specialty was pediatric surgery at Children’s Hospital in Philadelphia), and he soon became a household name. And a target of equal-but-opposite denunciations from both ends of the political spectrum.

The rabid right didn’t like his crusade against AIDS — he spoke of it openly and treated it as a disease instead of a moral failing — and his campaign for sex education, saying words like condom out loud. Shocking. As for the pro-abortion left — excuse us, the pro-choice left — it objected to his unswerving reverence for human life.

Together with Francis Schaeffer, the doctor would write a small classic of the pro-life movement (“Whatever Happened to the Human Race?”) in which he would say all manner of politically incorrect things, however prophetic. For example:

“Once the value of human life has been depreciated, as in Roe v. Wade and the Baby Doe Case, no one is safe. Once ‘quality of life’ is substituted for the absolute value of human life itself, we all are endangered. Already respected scientists are calling for a time period following birth (a week or so) to decide if newborns have ‘sufficient quality of life’ to be allowed to live. Already committees of ‘medical professionals’ would like to decide whether the ‘quality of life’ of the elderly or anyone seriously ill is high enough to allow them to go on living.”

Dr. Koop had foreseen “death panels” long before the idea had become a volatile topic of political debate — and understood the fatal potentialities in stylish clichés like quality-of-life. It wasn’t just in the medical journals, where he documented his pioneering work as a pediatric surgeon in numerous articles, but in the nation’s conscience that C. Everett Koop left his mark.

The doctor never let his faith interfere with his science, or his science with his faith. He was true to both. He never saw any need to reconcile them because they didn’t conflict. But supported each other. Like intelligence and conscience.

If any of the good doctor’s stands aroused more ire than his views on abortion and the rights of handicapped children, it was his campaign against smoking, which did not please the tobacco industry and powerful lobby, not at all. It was during his tenure as surgeon general — in 1988 — that his office released an irrefutable study on the addictive powers of tobacco.

As early as 1984, the doctor had challenged Americans to “create a smoke-free society in the United States by the year 2000.” The prospect seemed a fantasy then, but year by year, it became closer to reality as this country led the world in fighting the noxious weed. Just during his time as surgeon general, smoking rates in this country dropped from 38 percent to 27 percent. He fought Big Tobacco with scientific evidence, political savvy and, perhaps most effective, social ostracism. He helped made smoking unfashionable, and fashion can be all in such a fight.

Dr. Koop may have made his errors of judgment. For example, he got entirely too close, too profitably to the manufacturers of some of the health products he’d helped develop. But his campaign against smoking, including the second-hand variety, was no mistake; it was more a vision achieved.

As surgeon-in-chief at Children’s, he not only established innovative programs but taught, wrote and generally educated. He proceeded to do much the same as surgeon general of the United States, only on a larger scale and with a host of critics attacking his every pronouncement as he turned his office into a bully pulpit. He remained undaunted. And the target of angry critics. Like any man who takes a stand on moral issues.

Dr. Koop caught it from both sides — the Advanced Thinkers and the Bible Thumpers, too. And he didn’t seem to mind at all. Neither did President Reagan, who stuck by the doc throughout his long and controversial tenure as surgeon general. By its end, whatever Americans might think about his science or religion (he was what used to be called an Iron Presbyterian), he was universally admired and trusted. With that Amish-style beard and family-doctor manner, he’d become a kind of American institution. They called him the nation’s doctor — which is what he had become.

C. Everett Koop

Before Dr. C. Everett Koop arrived in 1981 as Surgeon General could anybody ever name who the Surgeon General was? Koop also caused lots of editorial cartoons to be drawn about him because of his positions he took on health issues. Today’s cartoon below sums up the issues he tackled.

Koop exhorted evangelicals to protect unborn

Posted on Feb 26, 2013 | by Diana Chandler

HANOVER, N.H. (BP) — Former U.S. Surgeon General C. Everett Koop, widely credited with energizing evangelicals against abortion, died peacefully Feb. 25 at his home in Hanover, N.H., at age 96.

The trailblazing pediatric surgeon developed a reputation as a preserver of life not only through groundbreaking surgeries and medical procedures, but through a morally, biblically based platform against sexual promiscuity and abortion, most notably before and after his two terms in the 1980s as surgeon general.

Koop also promoted the power of prayer in conjunction with medical science, famously praying at the bedsides of his patients.

In the 1979 book “Whatever Happened to the Human Race?” Koop and the late Frances Schaeffer made a case for the importance of mankind’s intrinsic God-given value in the preservation of humanity.

“If man is not made in the image of God, nothing then stands in the way of inhumanity. There is no good reason why mankind should be perceived as special. Human life is cheapened,” the two wrote. “We can see this in many of the major issues being debated in our society today: abortion, infanticide, euthanasia, the increase of child abuse and violence of all kinds, pornography (and its particular kinds of violence as evidenced in sadomasochism), the routine torture of political prisoners in many parts of the world, the crime explosion, and the random violence which surrounds us.”

Koop and Schaeffer endeavored to “awaken the evangelical world — and anyone else who would listen — to the Christian imperative to do something to reverse the perilous realignment of American values on these life-and-death issues” including abortion and infanticide, Koop reflected in his 1991 autobiography, “Koop: The Memoirs of America’s Family Doctor.”

Southern Baptist ethicist Richard Land has written that “it is difficult to overestimate the incredible impact” Koop and Schaeffer had on evangelicals in the 20th century.

“Everyone devoted to the pro-life cause owes an incalculable debt of gratitude to Francis Schaeffer and to Dr. C. Everett Koop,” Land wrote for National Right to Life in 2003. “First Schaeffer, and then Dr. Koop, helped inform and energize a whole generation of evangelical Christians to engagement with a culture that had veered dangerously off course from its Judeo-Christian foundations. The pro-life movement owes them an enormous debt.”

C. Ben Mitchell, professor of moral philosophy at Union University in Jackson, Tenn., hailed Koop’s legacy.

“We have lost the nation’s doctor,” Mitchell told Baptist Press. “As a gifted physician and faithful Christian, he taught us how to heal both body and soul. As a public servant he helped us navigate some tumultuous waves, even causing a few of his own. As a protector of human dignity and the sanctity of human life he cared for the tiniest and most vulnerable among us.”

After the U.S. legalized abortion, Koop predicted the practice would lead to infanticide, passive and active euthanasia and toward a political climate that, in Nazi Germany, led to Auschwitz and other concentration camps, according to news accounts of his speeches.

Koop, a Presbyterian, vowed during confirmation hearings before the U.S. Senate not to use his post as surgeon general to promote his religious ideology and occasionally angered evangelicals as he worked to keep his pledge.

Koop provoked controversy among evangelicals by encouraging sex education in elementary school, the use of condoms to prevent sexually transmitted diseases and compassionate health care for AIDS patients, who were then overwhelmingly within the homosexual community. Yet personally, he opposed homosexuality and promoted pre-marital sexual abstinence.

Among Koop’s other initiatives were calls for a smoking ban and campaigns promoting healthy eating and physical exercise education.

Melinda Delahoyde, president of the Care Net crisis pregnancy centers which Koop helped found, mourned Koop’s death.

“Dr. Koop took a courageous stand on the issue of life when not many were willing to do the same,” Delahoyde wrote on Care Net’s website. “He truly made a lasting impact, as his legacy lives on today through Care Net’s life-saving work to people facing unplanned pregnancies.”

As surgeon-in-chief at Children’s Hospital in Philadelphia, Koop pioneered surgery on newborns, successfully separating three sets of conjoined twins and reconstructing the chest of a baby born with the heart outside the body.

Koop’s recent outreach includes a letter he wrote in 2009 to Sen. Harry Reid urging that congressional health care legislation include a provision allowing doctors and medical students to opt out of performing abortions.

Koop was born Oct 14, 1916, in Brooklyn, N.Y., and, according to Reuters News, became interested in medicine after being badly injured as a child in a skiing accident and in playing football.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Elizabeth, and by their son David. He is survived by their children Allen Koop, Norman Koop and Elizabeth Thompson, as well as by his second wife Cora, whom he married in 2010, according to news reports.

Paul Greenberg became pro-life because we are all “endowed with certain unalienable rights”

On January 20, 2013 I heard Paul Greenberg talk about the words of Thomas Jefferson that we are all “endowed with certain unalienable rights” and the most important one is the right to life. He mentioned this also in this speech below from 2011: Paul Greenberg Dinner Speech 2011 Fall 2011 Issue Some of you […]

How Pulitzer Prize-winning Paul Greenberg, one of the most respected and honored commentators in America, changed his mind about abortion and endorses now the pro-life view

It is not possible to know where the pro-life evangelicals are coming from unless you look at the work of the person who inspired them the most. That person was Francis Schaeffer.  I do care about economic issues but the pro-life issue is the most important to me. Pro-life atheist Nat Hentoff: With Obama you will get more abortions!!!

Nat Hentoff is an atheist, but he became a pro-life activist because of the scientific evidence that shows that the unborn child is a distinct and separate human being and even has a separate DNA. His perspective is a very intriguing one that I thought you would be interested in. I have shared before many   cases (Bernard Nathanson, Donald Trump, Paul Greenberg, Kathy Ireland)    when other high profile pro-choice leaders have changed their views and this is just another case like those. I have contacted the White House over and over concerning this issue and have even received responses. I am hopeful that people will stop and look even in a secular way (if they are not believers) at this abortion debate and see that the unborn child is deserving of our protection. That is why the writings of Nat Hentoff of the Cato Institute are so crucial.

In the film series “WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE HUMAN RACE?” the arguments are presented  against abortion (Episode 1),  infanticide (Episode 2),   euthanasia (Episode 3), and then there is a discussion of the Christian versus Humanist worldview concerning the issue of “the basis for human dignity” in Episode 4 and then in the last episode a close look at the truth claims of the Bible.

I truly believe that many of the problems we have today in the USA are due to the advancement of humanism in the last few decades in our society. Ronald Reagan appointed the evangelical Dr. C. Everett Koop to the position of Surgeon General in his administration. He partnered with Dr. Francis Schaeffer in making the video below. It is very valuable information for Christians to have.  Actually I have included a video below that includes comments from him on this subject.

HENTOFF: New president, more abortions

Nat Hentoff

The Washington Times – Washington, DC
11/24/2008

OP-ED:Our new president-elect has not equivocated in his reverence for abortion rights. Speaking at a Planned Parenthood event on July 17, 2007, Barack Obama pledged that his first act as president would be to sign the Freedom of Choice Act. It is the most radical attack yet on the deep beliefs of millions of American pro-lifers.As Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer, a champion of the bill, exulted: “Women would have the absolute right to choose whether to continue or terminate their pregnancies before fetal viability, and that right would be protected by this legislation. The Freedom of Choice Act also supersedes any law, regulation or local ordinance that impinges on a woman’s right to choose,” she said. With regard to “fetal viability” – the ability to survive on his or her own – the ardent supporters of FOCA slide over the language in the surviving 2007 version of FOCA bill that, as Douglas Johnson of the National Right to Life Committee points out, “contains no objective criteria for ‘viability,’ but rather, requires that the judgment regarding ‘viability’ be left entirely in the hands of ‘the attending physician.’ “Guess who that would be? The abortionist! There’s more. The restrictions on “the absolute right to choose” would also apply even after “viability” if a woman wanted to abort what would undeniably be seen during pregnancy as a baby in ultrasound for reasons of her health. But the Supreme Court in 1973 (the same year as Roe v. Wade) in Doe v. Bolton defined very broadly “health” justification for aborting a viable human being, as “physical, emotional, psychological, familial and the woman’s age.” This was nearly a blank check to dispose of that aborted person. It’s no wonder that Mr. Obama opposed the Supreme Court decision that eventually ruled against the lawfulness of “partial-birth abortion,” which the late Democratic Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan (who was pro-choice) said was infanticide.

The rabidly pro-abortion Freedom of Choice Act Mr. Obama supports would – unless there is an unlikely successful filibuster in the Democratic controlled Senate – invalidate parental-notification laws; any state’s requirement of full disclosure of the physical and emotional risks inherent in abortion; and (can you believe this?) all laws prohibiting medical personnel other than licensed physicians from performing abortions because such restrictions might “interfere” with access to this absolute right to abortion.

This is respect for women? As of now, before our abortion president gets his wish, 26 states have informed-consent laws, 36 have parental-involvement laws and 34 states have restrictions on funding for abortions.

Also disposed of will be the “conscience rights” in many states. They include, Mr. Johnson reminds us, “all laws allowing doctors, nurses or other state-licensed professionals, and hospitals or other health care providers, to decline to provide or pay for abortions.” What about religiously based hospitals and clinics that refuse to perform abortions? At presidential press conferences, can we depend on at least some members of the Washington press corps to ask Mr. Obama about that provision or the others I’ve cited? Sen. Dianne Feinstein, California Democrat, heralded the election of Mr. Obama as “a new birth of freedom.” Not, however, for the early-stage human beings – each with his or her own distinct DNA – who, under this law, could never become citizens.

Matt Bowman, an attorney with the pro-life Alliance Defense Fund, projects that if FOCA is passed into law (Lifenews.com, Sept. 24), there will be an increase in abortion “by 125,000 per year” in the United States because of the abolition of laws in states that have parental involvement, informed-consent laws and funding restrictions. “Even with this minimum,” Mr. Bowman adds, “that’s 125,000 children that were not killed this year because we (still) have these laws, and 125,000 (added to the existing 1.3 million abortions) who will be killed in 2009” and beyond.

On Jan. 22, 2008, the 35th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, Mr. Obama said with pride: “Throughout my career, I’ve been a consistent and strong supporter of reproductive justice and have consistently had a 100 percent pro-choice rating with Planned Parenthood and NARAL Pro-Choice America … To truly honor (Roe v. Wade), we need to update the social contract so that women can free themselves and their children from violent relationships.”

What, Mr. President, can be more violent than murder by abortion? Alveda King, niece of Dr. Martin Luther King, said on Nov. 11 (Lifenews.com) that “his dream of full equality remains just a dream as long as unborn children continue to be treated no better than property. The elections are over. The pro-life battle begins anew.”

Open letter to President Obama (Part 445)

Open letter to President Obama (Part 445)

(Emailed to White House on 4-9-13.)

President Obama c/o The White House 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW Washington, DC 20500

Dear Mr. President,

I know that you receive 20,000 letters a day and that you actually read 10 of them every day. I really do respect you for trying to get a pulse on what is going on out here. Mr. President why do we allow abortion today in the USA? Let me tell you why by quoting Dr. C. Everett Koop and Francis Schaeffer:

For a while, Western culture — from sheer inertia — continued to live by the old Christian ethics while increasingly embracing the mechanistic, time-plus-chance view of people. People came more and more to hold that the universe is intrinsically and originally impersonal — as a stone is impersonal. Thus, by chance, life began on the earth and then, through long, long periods of time, by chance, life became more complex, until man with his special brain came into existence. By “chance” is meant that there was no reason for these things to occur; they just happened that way. No matter how loftily it is phrased, this view drastically reduces our view of self-worth as well as our estimation of the worth of others, for we are viewing ourselves as mere accidents of the universe…..because the Christian consensus has been put aside, we are faced today with a flood of personal cruelty. As we have noted, the Christian consensus gave great freedoms without leading to chaos — because society in general functioned within the values given in the Bible, especially the unique value of human life. Now that humanism has taken over, the former freedoms run riot, and individuals, acting on what they are taught, increasingly practice their cruelties without restraint. And why shouldn’t they? If the modern humanistic view of man is correct and man is only a product of chance in a universe that has no ultimate values, why should an individual refrain from being cruel to another person, if that person seems to be standing in his or her way?

Dr. Koop answers questions on Baby Doe, euthanasia and abortion during interview at Wheaton College, Wheaton, IL http://www.christianethics.org

Dr. Koop with Al Gore in the White House pictured above.

Here are some quotes from that great book and film series that Schaeffer and Koop took part in:

Quotes From The Book

The thinkables of the eighties and nineties will certainly include things which most people today find unthinkable and immoral, even unimaginable and too extreme to suggest. Yet — since they do not have some overriding principle that takes them beyond relativistic thinking — when these become thinkable and acceptable in the eighties and nineties, most people will not even remember that they were unthinkable in the seventies. They will slide into each new thinkable without a jolt.
(Francis A. Schaeffer and C. Everette Koop, Whatever Happened to the Human Race?, Ch. 1)

In our time, humanism has replaced Christianity as the consensus of the west. This has had many results, not the least of which is to change people’s view of themselves and their attitudes toward other human beings. Here is how the change came about. Having rejected God, humanistic scientists, philosophers and professors began to teach that only what can be mathematically measured is real and that all reality is like a machine. Man is only one part of the larger cosmic machine. Man is more complicated than the machines people make, but is still a machine, nevertheless.
(Francis A. Schaeffer and C. Everette Koop, Whatever Happened to the Human Race?, Ch. 1)

No matter how loftily it is phrased, this view drastically reduces our view of self-worth as well as our estimation of the worth of others, for we are viewing ourselves as mere accidents of the universe.
(Francis A. Schaeffer and C. Everette Koop, Whatever Happened to the Human Race?, Ch. 1)

The Bible teaches that man is made in the image of God and therefore is unique. Remove that teaching, as humanism has done on both sides of the Iron Curtain, and there is no adequate basis for treating people well.
(Francis A. Schaeffer and C. Everette Koop, Whatever Happened to the Human Race?, Ch. 1)

…because the Christian consensus has been put aside, we are faced today with a flood of personal cruelty.
(Francis A. Schaeffer and C. Everette Koop, Whatever Happened to the Human Race?, Ch. 1)

Modern humanism has an inherent need to manipulate and tinker with the natural processes, including human nature [through genetics], because humanism:

1. Rejects the doctrine of Creation.
2. Therefore rejects the idea that there is anything stable or “given” about human nature.
3. Sees human nature as part of a long, unfolding process of development in which everything is changing.
4. Casts around for some solution to the problem of despair that this determinist-evolutionist vision induces.
5. Can only find a solution in the activity of the human will, which — in opposition to its own system — it hopes can transcend the inexorable flow of nature and act upon nature.
6. Therefore encourages manipulation of nature, including tinkering with people, as the only way of escaping from nature’s bondage. But this manipulation cannot have any certain criteria to guide it because, with God abolished, the only remaining criterion is nature (which is precisely what humanist man wants to escape from) and nature is both noncruel and cruel.
(Francis A. Schaeffer and C. Everette Koop, Whatever Happened to the Human Race?, Ch. 1)

With nothing higher than human opinion upon which to base judgments and with ethics equaling no ethics, the justification for seeing crime and cruelty as disturbing is destroyed. The very word crime and even the word cruelty lose meaning. There is no final reason on which to forbid anything — “If nothing is forbidden, then anything is possible.”
(Francis A. Schaeffer and C. Everette Koop, Whatever Happened to the Human Race?, Ch. 1)

If man is not made in the image of God, nothing then stands in the way of inhumanity. There is no good reason why mankind should be perceived as special. Human life is cheapened. We can see this in many of the major issues being debated in our society today: abortion, infanticide, euthanasia, the increase of child abuse and violence of all kinds, pornography (and its particular kinds of violence as evidenced in sadomasochism), the routine torture of political prisoners in many parts of the world, the crime explosion, and the random violence which surrounds us.

In this 1979 film series they dealt with the big social issues and predicted what social problems we have in the future because of humanism. For instance, they knew that the Jack Kevorkians of the world would be coming down the pike. They predicted that there was a slippery slope from abortion to infanticide to youth euthanasia brought on by the materialistic worldview.

9 Things You Should Know About Edith Schaeffer

9 Things You Should Know About Edith Schaeffer avatar

Edith Schaeffer, co-founder of L’Abri Fellowship and widow of theologian-philosopher Francis Schaeffer, died on Friday at age 98. Here are 9 things you should know about Mrs. Schaeffer:

1. Schaeffer was born in Wenzhou, China to missionaries who were serving with the China Inland Mission.

2. In addition to her English name, her parents gave her the Chinese name Mei Fuh, meaning “beautiful happiness”.

3. On June 26th, 1932, Edith attended a meeting in her liberal Presbyterian church where a Unitarian minister delivered an address on “How I know that Jesus is Not the Son of God, and How I Know that the Bible is not the Word of God.” She was prepared to offer a rebuttal when a young man stood up and said, “My name is Francis Schaeffer and I want to say that I know Jesus is the Son of God, and He is also my Savior.” After Francis delivered his testimony, Edith added a brief apologetic for the truth of the Bible. The two began dating that night and married three years later.

4. To put her husband Francis through seminary, Edith tailored men’s suits and made gowns and wedding dresses for private clients.

5. After three years serving in active parish ministries in the United States, the Schaeffers moved their family to Switzerland in 1948 to help churches in their efforts to resist both liberalism in theology and existentialism in the culture after World War II.

6. L’Abri Fellowship began in Switzerland in 1955 when Francis and Edith decided in faith to open their home to be a place where people might find satisfying answers to their questions and practical demonstration of Christian care. It was called L’Abri, the French word for “shelter,” because they sought to provide a shelter from the pressures of a relentlessly secular 20th century.

7. By 1960, L’Abri had become such a phenomenon that it attracted the notice of Time magazine. Edith’s “Family Letter” had a circulation of 1,300, and her Sunday evening “High Tea” was hosting upwards of 50 people from around the world every week.

8. Edith helped to restore and popularize the all-but-lost arts of hospitality and homemaking within the evangelical community during the last twentieth-century. As she wrote in her book, What is a Family?, “There needs to be a homemaker exercising some measure of skill, imagination, creativity, desire to fulfill needs and give pleasure to others in the family. How precious a thing is the human family. It it not worth some sacrifice in time, energy, safety, discomfort, work? Does anything come forth without work?”

9. Edith wrote or co-wrote 20 books, two less than her husband. Two of her books (Affliction) and (The Tapestry: the Life and Times of Francis and Edith Schaeffer) won the Gold Medallion Award from the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association.

Many in the press made a big deal about the 40th birthday of Roe v Wade but there are over 55 million aborted unborn babies in heaven wishing they had at least one birthday as this wonderful editorial cartoon illustrates.

(Francis did a great job in his film series “How Should we then live?” in looking at how humanism has affected art and culture in the Western World in the last 2000 years. My favorite episodes include his study of the Renaissance, the Revolutionary age, the age of Nonreason, and the age of Fragmentation.)

Michele Bachmann’s pro-life views were influenced by the works of Francis Schaeffer!!!!

_________________

Michele Bachmann’s pro-life views were influenced by the works of Francis Schaeffer!!!!

A 2011 article from Life News noted:

Bachmann cites Christian writer Francis Schaeffer as an influence on her pro-life views.

In a campaign stop to speak to local residents at a church in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Bachmann shared her testimony and talked about the Christian faith she and her husband share. That faith, which has matured thanks to the writings of Schaeffer, has led Bachman to a pro-life view that has seen her compile a 100% pro-life voting record in Congress and adopt dozens of foster children.

“One thing that Dr. Schaeffer said is that [God is] not just the God of theology. He’s not just the God of the Bible,” Bachmann said, according to the Des Moines Register. “Since he is the Creator God, he’s the father of biology, sociology, of political science, of you name the subject. … And that altered our way of thinking, that God had something to say about our career.”

“Francis Schaeffer also said that life is the watershed issue of our time, and how we come down on how we view human life will impact all other issues,” she said. “And so Marcus and I decided we didn’t want to be pro-life only, just as speaking… We wanted to live a life of being about pro-life.”

The Register indicates Bachmann told the audience that, upon the encouragement to put her pro-life views into action, she and her husband began counseling and praying with single mothers and helping them get to pregnancy and adoption centers to provide further practical support instead of abortion.

“This is not to condemn any woman who here has ever had an abortion or participated in one,” she said, according to the newspaper. “Because God is there also with grace and mercy in that situation, but to say that he is the life-giving only God who has answers in the midst of our trying times.”

Dave Andrusko, of the National Right to Life Committee, says he is not surprised Schaeffer helped shaped Bachmann’s faith and pro-life views.

“There are a couple of reasons it’s useful to talk about Congresswoman Bachmann’s talk—her testimony. Like almost all the GOP candidates current running, and most of the few who may still jump in, she is staunchly pro-life,” he says. “Schaeffer is perhaps best known to pro-life veterans for co-authoring with Dr. C. Everett Koop (later Surgeon General) the hugely influential “Whatever Happened to the Human Race?” Both as a book and a video series, the impact of “Whatever Happened to the Human Race” cannot be exaggerated. It awakened and mobilized Evangelical Protestants as nothing before had ever done.”

He called the Bachmanns “loving pro-lifers” who have expressed their Christian faith and pro-life views “through the hands and feet” of action.

Pro-Life Women’s Caucus Defends Life on House Floor – Part 2 of 2

Rep. Jean Schmidt (R-OH) and Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) offer the pro-life women’s perspective on growing public support for the pro-life cause, the true impact of taxpayer funding for abortion in DC.

President Obama has proposed repealing the Dornan Amendment, legislation that currently prevents taxpayer funded abortion in the District of Columbia.

Open letter to President Obama (Part 443) Remembering Everett Koop Part 7 (Public Health poster)

(Emailed to White House on 3-4-13.)

President Obama c/o The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW
Washington, DC 20500

Dear Mr. President,

I know that you receive 20,000 letters a day and that you actually read 10 of them every day. I really do respect you for trying to get a pulse on what is going on out here.

I wanted to share with you some about my pro-life perspective.

Newsmaker Interview with Surgeon General C. Everett Koop

Published on Feb 25, 2013

The PBS NewsHour interviewed former Surgeon General, Dr. C. Everett Koop, on the anniversary of the first surgeon general’s report on smoking. Jim Lehrer interviewed Koop for a newsmaker conversation for the The MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour from the surgeon general’s office in Washington on Jan. 11, 1989. Koop died Monday at the age of 96.

Dr. Koop.

C. Everett Koop

Dr. C. Everett Koop played a key role in getting the word out about AIDS. As scientists during the early 1980s uncovered the mechanism by which AIDS is transmitted, public health agencies launched educational campaigns that warned, as did this poster, against the risk of infection from intravenous drug use and the sharing of contaminated needles, unprotected intercourse, and the transmission of the AIDS virus from mother to child. It is pictured below.

In the film series “WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE HUMAN RACE?” the arguments are presented  against abortion (Episode 1),  infanticide (Episode 2),   euthenasia (Episode 3), and then there is a discussion of the Christian versus Humanist worldview concerning the issue of “the basis for human dignity” in Episode 4 and then in the last episode a close look at the truth claims of the Bible.

Former Surgeon General C. Everett Koop Dies, Leaves Pro-Life Legacy

By Stoyan Zaimov | Christian Post Reporter

C. Everett Koop, a former U.S. Surgeon General who served under President Ronald Reagan from 1982 to 1989 and was known for his pro-life views, passed away on Monday at his home in Hanover, N.H.

The National Right to Life, one of the oldest and largest pro-life organizations in the country, said in a statement on Tuesday that they were “deeply saddened” by Dr. Koop’s death.

“In an era when pro-abortionists tried to declare that the abortion issue was ‘settled law,’ Dr. Koop provided a voice for the voiceless,” said Carol Tobias, president of National Right to Life.

The former surgeon general co-authored a pro-life book titled Whatever Happened to the Human Race with the late Francis Schaeffer, which argued for the value and dignity of all human life, and opposed practices such as abortion, infanticide, and euthanasia.

“To this day, Whatever Happened to the Human Race is a must-read for its almost prophetic anticipation of the world we live in today,” Tobias added.

The pediatric surgeon, who was 96 years old when he passed away on Monday, was outspoken on a number of issues, and drew criticism both from conservatives and liberals alike.

Reuters noted that Koop, who campaigned passionately against the dangers of HIV and AIDS, urged the use of condoms for men if they were unable to practice abstinence, in order to prevent the spread of the disease. Conservative activist Phyllis Schlafly blasted those efforts for “teaching of safe sodomy in public schools.”

At the same time, he was targeted by some feminist activists for his pro-life views and opposition to abortion, even being labeled “a monster” by one such feminist leader. As a Presbyterian Christian, Koop opposed the practice based on personal and religious views.

For many, however, he was an inspirational figure and a household name who did a great deal for health education in the U.S.

“He saved countless lives through his leadership in confronting the public health crisis that came to be known as AIDS and standing up to powerful special interests like the tobacco companies,” U.S. Representative Henry Waxman, a California Democrat, said on Monday.

“Dr. Koop was not only a pioneering pediatric surgeon but also one of the most courageous and passionate public health advocates of the past century,” added Dr. Wiley W. Souba, dean of the Geisel School.

Slate magazine noted that one of his lasting legacies is his groundbreaking seven-page brochure, “Understanding AIDS,” released in 1986, when the deadly disease was spreading throughout the country and many people were lacking in information about its causes and effects. The pamphlet was distributed to over 107 million households by 1998, making it the largest public health mailing in history.

“In hindsight, that brochure may not be perfect, but it represented the best available information the country had about AIDS at the time,” Slate reported. “Perhaps most importantly, it made sure to refute the notion that it was an epidemic that only some communities had to worry about.”

Koop is survived by his three children, one of whom is a pastor at a nondenominational church, his wife, Cora, and eight grandchildren.

Pro-life Atheist Nat Hentoff: “Without exception, Physicians emphasize that human life is a continuum–from the implantation of a fertilized egg in the uterine lining to birth to death”

Beyond the ‘rehearsed response’

by Nat Hentoff
The Village Voice, January 30, 1996

I read my fellow columnist Adolph Reed Jr. with interest and sometimes find him illuminating. But when he writes with what W.H. Auden used to call a ”rehearsed response”–rather than independent research–he is disappointingly ordinary.

In a recent Voice column, Professor Reed–he is a tenured savant at Northwestern University–elegantly described me as having a ”fetus fetish.” The professor went on to declare unequivocally that ”a fetus is not a human being, it’s an organism growing inside the body, albeit an organism with the potential to become a human being.”

Since he or she (even fetuses have genders) has not yet been admitted into our protected circle, it’s okay to kill him or her.

I am familiar with the argument, being confronted with this rationale for abortion when I speak on the subject at colleges–including Princeton, Brown, the Columbia University Law School, Harvard, and other campuses.

Invariably, I am invited to address these largely hostile audiences by a small, hardy group of prolifers who present me as an oddity for their side–somewhat like the two-headed boy in the carnival.

They have spread the word beforehand that I am an atheist civil libertarian who writes for that prochoice bastion, The Village Voice. They add that my writings make clear that my views have far more in common with the teachings of justices William Brennan and Thurgood Marshall than with those of the Christian Coalition’s Ralph Reed, whom I consider an enemy of the Bill of Rights.

So what the hell am I doing with a fetus fetish–particularly since Margot, my wife of many years, is unswervingly prochoice?

I begin my talks to students and faculty eager to dissect my heresy with a quote from the second edition of a standard medical textbook, The Unborn Patient: Prenatal Diagnosis and Treatment, published by W.B. Saunders Company, a division of Harcourt Brace, in 1991. The editors–all medical school professors at the University of California at San Francisco and experts in fetal treatment–are Michael Harrison, Mitchell Golbus, and Roy Filly.

God is nowhere mentioned in the textbook. The first chapter begins: ”The concept that the fetus is a patient, an individual whose maladies are a proper subject for medical treatment as well as scientific observation, is alarmingly modern. Only now are we beginning to consider the fetus seriously–medically, legally, and ethically.”

In recent years I’ve interviewed a number of physicians engaged in research on prenatal development. Without exception, they emphasize that human life is a continuum–from the implantation of a fertilized egg in the uterine lining to birth to death. Setting up divisions of this process to justify abortion –as in Roe v. Wade–is artificial. It’s a denial of biology. Whether in the fourth or 14th week, it is the life of a developing human being that is being killed. The American Medical News (June 20, 1994)–a weekly publication of the American Medical Association–has reported an analysis of the beginnings of human life by Dr. C. Ward Kischer, a professor in the department of anatomy at the University of Arizona College of Medicine. I commend it to Professor Reed:

”Every point in time is part of a continuum. Therefore, every point in development derives its significance from the previous point. Scientific ‘spin doctors’ have invented and promoted such bogus biology as ‘pre-embryo’ and ‘stages of individuality,’ and have duped many physicians who know little about human embryology. Many of them are now using this pseudo-science to justify human embryo experimentation. The Nuremberg trials settled this question conclusively.”

The Nuremberg trials were concerned solely with human beings, as I am.

In the February 18, 1990, Journal of the American Medical Association, Dr. Joel Hylton, a physician in Thomasville, North Carolina, who had people like Adolph Reed Jr. in mind, wrote:

”Who can say that the fetus is not alive and is not a separate genetic entity? Its humanity…also cannot be questioned scientifically. It is certainly of no other species. That it is dependent on another makes it qualitatively no different from countless other humans outside the womb.” (Emphasis added.)

Dr. Hylton added: ”It strikes me that to argue that one may take an innocent life to preserve the quality of life of another is cold and carries utilitarianism to an obscene extreme. Nowhere else in our society is this permitted or even thinkable–although abortion sets a frightening prospect.”

In 1975, Margot Hentoff wrote a piece on abortion in the Voice that created a great deal of comment, most of it savagely critical. Then, as now, she was for abortion rights. Then, as now, she was an admirer of George Orwell and shunned euphemisms. In any context, she does not turn away from–in William Burroughs’s phrase–”the naked lunch at the end of the fork.” To say the least, she is a challenge to live with and has made me more honest than I would have been otherwise.

In the Voice, Margot wrote:

”Here we have one of the problems created by the liberal community’s obfuscation of language in refusing to speak plainly about what abortion is.

”They have held on to the illogical concept that the fetus is not a human being, that no killing is involved, and that an abortion is merely an operative procedure on a woman who has the right to decide what she wants to do with her body and the products thereof.”

In the October 16, 1995, New Republic, Naomi Wolf, also strongly prochoice, wrote: ”Many pro-choice advocates developed a language to assert that the fetus isn’t a person, and this, over the years, has developed into a lexicon of dehumanization….

”How can we charge that it is vile and repulsive for pro-lifers to brandish vile and repulsive images if the images are real?”

One of my biggest pro-life heroes in Little Rock is my good friend Dr. Orman Simmons.

One of my biggest pro-life heroes in Little Rock is my good friend Dr. Orman Simmons.

Dr. Orman Winfield Simmons

An obstetrician/gynecologist whose faith guides his practice, Simmons says he has brought several thousand people into this world.

By Linda Haymes

This article was published June 23, 2013 at 2:55 a.m.

There has been one steadfast truth throughout Dr. Orman Simmons’ life. He has never wavered on what he was called to do in this world. Early on, even as a small child, he knew he wanted to become a physician.

“When I was 6 and living in North Little Rock, I had an injury on the top of my head that required an emergency visit to my primary care doctor,” he recalls. “He stapled it up and then sat me down and asked me, ‘Do you know what you want to be when you grow up?’

“I said, ‘Yes, I want to be a doctor like you,’ and I remember that he said, ‘Well, I hope you change your mind because it’s a hard life.’”

He didn’t. Change his mind, that is, and at 76, he’s continuing to practice at the successful Cornerstone Clinic for Women in west Little Rock that he co-founded with Dr. Doug Smith and which now features a staff of seven physicians and two obstetrics/gynecology nurse practitioners.

But Simmons, believed to be the oldest obstetrician still practicing in Arkansas, will quit delivering babies Friday, the 50th anniversary of when, as an intern, he began working as a obstetrician. He will, however, continue practice as a gynecologist.

All these decades and all these babies later — Simmons estimates he has delivered several thousand people — he has yet to become blase about the miracle of birth.

“Fifty years later it’s still a wonder to me how God does it, and to see the reaction of the family and the extended family. Dads who are having their fourth or fifth child, they’re crying, and the grandmothers are crying.”

NAMESAKE

Simmons’ childhood years were hardscrabble ones. Born to Henry and Dee Simmons, he spent his earliest years in a house with no electricity, an outhouse out back, a No. 3 washtub on the back porch, and water carried in from the pump in the yard.

Simmons says his father, who had only an eighth-grade education, worked hard to support the family.

Simmons was born in Cross County, and when he was 4, his father moved the family to North Little Rock and went to work at the munitions plant in Jacksonville. Eventually, he moved the family from near Washington Avenue into Levy, and later to the upper-middle-class Lakewood neighborhood on the money he brought home from the the plant. By example, he instilled in his son a strong work ethic so that at 14 “I went to work at the local movie theaters changing the marquees and then working the concession counter … and then I began working at Kroger when I was 16.”

He would continue working for Kroger while in high school, over summers and Christmas breaks while he attended the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, and even his first two years of medical school.

While in college, Simmons met future wife Marilyn at the Baptist Student Union. After they spent some time together as friends but before their first date, he asked her, “Will you marry me?”

“That’s not funny,” she responded.

“I’m not trying to be funny,” he replied.

It would be another two years before the couple married.

In 1962, as a student at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, Simmons delivered his first baby. It was under the aegis of the woman’s primary care doctor, who promised, “‘If you stay with the mom during the labor, I’ll let you deliver the baby.’”

As Simmons recalls, he was far more excited about the birth than was the mother, who already had 8 boys and 8 girls. Still, after the baby was born, she asked the young intern what his first name was and named her ninth son Orman.

A couple of years later, Simmons and his wife began a family of their own, and he delivered all three of his daughters — Amber, now 48; Vivian, now 46; and Calli, now 43 and a nurse in Simmons’ practice — and 16 of his grandchildren.

While serving two years as a physician in the Army, Simmons spent 11 months in Vietnam treating the wounded.

“It was life changing,” he says of the experience. “Afterward, I said that I’d seen so much blood, I’d never be afraid of blood again.”

BABIES, BABIES, BABIES

After his residency, Simmons was invited to join the practice of Dr. Bill Floyd in Little Rock.

“He was a wonderful teacher and practice companion,” Simmons recalls. “I learned so much from him, to be patient with people, and if they had a problem that was going to require surgery but it wasn’t an emergency, let them decide when they needed to have the surgery. He taught me that the mother you’re taking care of has other people at home — other children and a husband — and you don’t need to drive their decisions but instead just be a part of them.”

Through his years of practice, he has delivered a set of quadruplets from Morrilton, a few sets of triplets and even more sets of twins. He has delivered most of those babies at Baptist Health Medical Center near his current office, but has also delivered babies at St. Vincent Infirmary Medical Center. He served as chief of obstetrics at Baptist twice, once in the 1970s and again in 1983. He was appointed to the Arkansas State Medical Board by then-Gov. Mike Huckabee in 1999, serving through 2006.

“We used to listen to the baby with a fetoscope, an adaptation of a stethoscope,” he marvels. “Now we have ultrasound and electronic monitoring, which can measure the strength of the contractions.

“We can see if the water has broken, and even have a special instrument to break the water … and then there are all the drugs we have to start and stop labor. And the anesthesia we have is phenomenal.”

From his vantage point, it has been a golden era for obstetrics.

“I think I have practiced in the best era of medicine,” Simmons says. “It might get better in the future, but from where we’ve come from, it’s amazing.”

Only once, very briefly, did he have second thoughts about being a doctor. He thought about becoming a minister, but then, “I felt like I could also have a ministry in medicine — so I stayed with it and I feel like I have been able to reach others spiritually as well as medically.”

FAITH IN PRACTICE

In 1977, when a lot of obstetricians were choosing to quit delivering babies and focus their practices solely on gynecology, one of Simmons’ former medical school classmates, Dr. Doug Smith, then practicing in Fort Smith, moved to Little Rock and joined forces with him to establish a practice that would also include a ministry emphasis. They named the practice Cornerstone.

“I was not a Christian when I became a doctor, but after I became a Christian, I knew I had to make some difficult decisions on how I was going to handle my practice,” says Simmons, who currently is a member of Immanuel Baptist Church in Little Rock.

“In college, neither of us were Christians,” Smith explains. “When we met up years later by chance at a medical conference in Mexico City, we discovered we’d both become believers and decided to join together to create a practice which would also include our religious faith.”

For patients who choose to do so, the physicians often pray with those in labor or going into surgery.

Smith says the pair’s goal was not to force their convictions upon others but instead to be able to offer spiritual guidance in addition to medical care, and keep their own faith in the forefront as a reminder to focus on treating their patients as they would want to be treated.

As a vocal opponent of abortion, Simmons has shared his beliefs, testifying before legislative committees and in the courtroom about his opposition to abortions, especially the procedure known as partial-birth abortion.

“I believe that life begins at the moment of conception and we don’t have the right to take that life,” he says, adding that he has been ridiculed for his beliefs.

What are his thoughts regarding the two state laws passed by the Arkansas Legislature this past session, one banning most abortions at or after the 12th week of pregnancy and the other banning them after the 20th week?

“I think it’s a move in the right direction to make some logical sense out of all the political and emotional morass that has engulfed this whole thing,” says Simmons, who was scheduled to testify one day during the recent session before the hearing was canceled.

He does enjoy traveling with his wife and up until last year was still snow-skiing, but otherwise he doesn’t really have any hobbies. He gave up golf during the Nixon administration.

Simmons credits his wife with being a constant and steady partner in his life.

“Back in medical school, when I told her I was going into obstetrics, a lot of women would have pitched a fit because of the long, demanding hours, but she didn’t,” Simmons says.

And while his profession cost him some lost time in the evenings and weekends with his daughters as they were growing up, the memories they do share from that time are precious.

“They’ve told me that some of their sweetest memories of me are the rare occasions when I was home in the mornings and would get them out of bed and sit and rock them by the fireplace before getting them dressed and ready for school,” Simmons says, growing emotional.

While he will soon stop delivering babies, he doesn’t have any plans to completely retire anytime soon.

“For my age, I have been blessed with incredibly good health and have an abundance of energy,” he says. “I don’t know what I’d do with a lot of free time. Maybe in four years, I’ll look at that question again and re-evaluate it then,” he says with a smile.

Dr. C. Everett Koop on Baby Doe, euthanasia, abortion

Uploaded on Nov 3, 2008

Dr. Koop answers questions on Baby Doe, euthanasia and abortion during interview at Wheaton College, Wheaton, IL http://www.christianethics.org

Dr. Koop.

C. Everett Koop

On June 8, 1988 Ralph Dunagin of the LA Times came out with the funniest editorial cartoon I have ever seen about Dr. C. Everett Koop time in office as Surgeon General. It is found below.

C. Everett Koop dies

February 26, 2013 By 7 Comments

C. Everett Koop, the Surgeon General under President Reagan, has died at age 96.  The mainstream obituaries are hailing his work to battle smoking and the AIDS epidemic.  But he was also a devout Christian and a crusader against abortion.  Koop  collaborated with  Francis Schaeffer on the book and video series Whatever Happened to the Human Race?, a work that helped mobilize Christians for the pro-life cause.

C. Everett Koop '37

From Former Surgeon General C. Everett Koop dies at age 96 – CNN.com:

Former U.S. Surgeon General C. Everett Koop, a pediatric surgeon turned public health advocate, died Monday. He was 96.

Koop served as surgeon general from 1982 to 1989, under Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush.

He was outspoken on controversial public health issues and did much to raise the profile the office of the surgeon general.

He died peacefully at his home in Hanover, New Hampshire, Dartmouth College said in a news release announcing his death.

“Dr. Koop did more than take care of his individual patients — he taught all of us about critical health issues that affect our larger society,” said Dartmouth President Carol L. Folt. “Through that knowledge, he empowered each of us to improve our own well-being and quality of life. Dr. Koop’s commitment to education allowed him to do something most physicians can only dream of: improving the health of millions of people worldwide.”

Koop, called “Chick” by his friends, was perhaps best known for his work around HIV/AIDS. He wrote a brochure about the disease that was sent to 107 million households in the United States in 1988. It was the largest public health mailing ever, according to a biography of Koop on a website of the surgeon general.

He was also well-known for his work around tobacco, calling for a “smoke-free” society. His 1986 surgeon general’s report on the dangers of secondhand smoke was seminal.

“That was the shot heard around the world, and it began to change public policy everywhere,” said John Seffrin, chief executive officer of the American Cancer Society.

The report started the move toward prohibiting smoking on airplanes, restaurants and at workplaces.

“The legacy of C. Everett Koop is how a wonderful, famous pediatric surgeon, who’d already made a name for himself, was willing at a relatively advanced age to do public service and show bold leadership that would have dramatic impact and change the world,” Seffrin said.

Prior to his tenure as surgeon general, Koop was surgeon-in-chief at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, where he was a pioneer in the field of pediatric surgery and helped to establish the country’s first neonatal intensive care nursery. He was also the founding editor-in-chief of the Journal of Pediatric Surgery, Dartmouth said.

Koop was born in Brooklyn, New York, and attended Dartmouth, Weill Cornell Medical College and the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.

He was the author of more than 200 articles and books and the recipient of various awards. In 1991, Koop won an Emmy for a five-part series on health care reform, Dartmouth said. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1995.

Again, this says nothing about his faith or his pro-life influence.  I actually met him, finding myself sitting with him at a banquet.  He projected the bedside manner of a trusted family doctor and played that role for the whole nation.

“Sanctity of Life Saturday”:Derek Melleby’s review of the book “Francis Schaeffer: An Authentic Life” (includes film THE BASIS FOR HUMAN DIGNITY)

I truly believe that many of the problems we have today in the USA are due to the advancement of humanism in the last few decades in our society. Ronald Reagan appointed the evangelical Dr. C. Everett Koop to the position of Surgeon General in his administration. He partnered with Dr. Francis Schaeffer in making […]

He mentioned this also in this speech below from 2011: Paul Greenberg Dinner Speech 2011 Fall 2011 Issue Some of you […]
