Bobby Petrino has been moving up the coaching ladder ever since he got into football. Winning BCS bowls at Louisville and then taking Arkansas from 5 wins, to 8 wins, to 10 wins and this year to 11 wins and a top 5 finish.

If I had to describe Bobby Petrino’s coaching style, two principles come to mind: CONSTANTLY LEARNING MORE and WORK-A-HOLIC.

Solomon of the Book of Ecclesiastes was a lot like that but he could not get satisfaction even if he achieved his goals. He was always looking for something more.

Like Solomon, Petrino has lots of wealth (3.6 million per year) and he has lots of fame. Petrino is probably the second most well known man in Arkansas outside of former president Bill Clinton.

Yet Petrino has tried to get satisfaction through an extra-martial affair. What is the answer to satisfying the longing in his life for satisfaction?

Tom Brady has it all, but he does not have true satisfaction. He has put an enormous amount of effort into his work and has got several Super Bowls rings. He has become the most exact passer in the NFL and he did it by putting lots of time in practice and studying film. After he got on top of the world financially, he started to enjoy the pleasures that riches and fame brought him. However, this only led him to realize that there is something more out there. He was not satisfied at all.

This reminds me of the lyrics of a Coldplay song:

Oh…Time is so short and I’m sure
There must be something more…

In fact, I want to spend the rest of my time on this post talking about the similar desire that Coldplay has put forth.

Coldplay – 42 Live

Coldplay perform on the french television channel W9.

I wrote this article a couple of years ago:

The Spiritual Search for the Afterlife
Russ Breimeier rightly noted that it seems that Coldplay is “on the verge of identifying a great Truth” and their latest CD is very provocative. Many songs mention God and other Biblical themes such as dealing with death, and the afterlife and meaning in life and the shortness of life. The song “42” states,
Those who are dead are not dead
They’re just living my head
And since I fell for that spell
I am living there as well
Oh…Time is so short and I’m sure
There must be something more
This is the same journey that Solomon went on 3000 years ago in the Book of Ecclesiastes. The Christian Scholar Ravi Zacharias noted, “The key to understanding the Book of Ecclesiastes is the term UNDER THE SUN — What that literally means is you lock God out of a closed system and you are left with only this world of Time plus Chance plus matter.” Most people are not in the position of Solomon was in because he had a great deal of resources and could see if getting true lasting satisfaction was possible without God in the picture and Solomon went about this experiment.  He found out these hard cold facts.
Three things that do not bring lasting Satisfaction
Satisfaction does not come through (#1) learning more, or (#2)  putting more effort in your work or  (#3)seeking pleasure.
Read Solomon’s words for yourself.
Ecclesiastes 1:16- 2:11
16-17 I said to myself, “I know more and I’m wiser than anyone before me in Jerusalem. I’ve stockpiled wisdom and knowledge.” What I’ve finally concluded is that so-called wisdom and knowledge are mindless and witless—nothing but spitting into the wind.18 Much learning earns you much trouble.
The more you know, the more you hurt.
Chapter 2
1-3 I said to myself, “Let’s go for it—experiment with pleasure, have a good time!” But there was nothing to it, nothing but smoke.What do I think of the fun-filled life? Insane! Inane!
My verdict on the pursuit of happiness? Who needs it?
With the help of a bottle of wine
and all the wisdom I could muster,
I tried my level best
to penetrate the absurdity of life.
I wanted to get a handle on anything useful we mortals might do
during the years we spend on this earth.
 4-8 Oh, I did great things: built houses,
planted vineyards,
designed gardens and parks
and planted a variety of fruit trees in them,
made pools of water
to irrigate the groves of trees.
I bought slaves, male and female,
who had children, giving me even more slaves;
then I acquired large herds and flocks,
larger than any before me in Jerusalem.
I piled up silver and gold,
loot from kings and kingdoms.
I gathered a chorus of singers to entertain me with song,
and—most exquisite of all pleasures—
voluptuous maidens for my bed.
 9-10 Oh, how I prospered! I left all my predecessors in Jerusalem far behind, left them behind in the dust. What’s more, I kept a clear head through it all. Everything I wanted I took—I never said no to myself. I gave in to every impulse, held back nothing. I sucked the marrow of pleasure out of every task—my reward to myself for a hard day’s work!
 11 Then I took a good look at everything I’d done, looked at all the sweat and hard work. But when I looked, I saw nothing but smoke. Smoke and spitting into the wind. There was nothing to any of it. Nothing.
No band has worked harder than Coldplay (creating 4 of the greatest cds in pop history) and Chris Martin is a very educated man who has achieved the storybook life in many areas. Why has his writing turning more towards spiritual matters now? Could he be traveling down the same road that Solomon was going 3000 years ago?

Bobby Petrino to survive this wreck?

Arkansas’ Jeff Long Addresses The Media About Bobby Petrino’s Affair

Petrino will survive this wreck. Of course, I am speaking of two wrecks. The wreck he is trying to make of his marriage and the motorcycle wreck. It seems that most of the fans are mainly concerned about his physical health so he can coach us to more victories.

Here is what ESPN had to say:

Is this a storm Bobby Petrino can survive?

April, 6, 2012

Apr 6
2:35
AM ET
By Chris Low | ESPN.com
PetrinoAP Photo/Beth HallThe breaking scandal has coach Bobby Petrino on thin ice at Arkansas.

Football coaches who win at a high level have been known to survive the most serious of storms.

The storm that has engulfed Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino might get worse before it gets better, and it has already become a huge embarrassment for the university.

Petrino’s success on the field and the way he has made Arkansas relevant again nationally will weigh heavily in his corner, but the stigma that’s sure to follow him now might be too much to overcome.

Furthermore, who knows what other details might be out there concerning his motorcycle crash last Sunday night, and more specifically, his relationship with the 25-year-old woman he was riding with when the crash occurred? She’s the same woman, Jessica Dorrell, who was hired last month as the student-athlete development coordinator for football. She works under Petrino and oversees on-campus recruiting.

Clearly, Petrino’s bosses are ticked. Arkansas athletic director Jeff Long announced at a press conference late Thursday night that Petrino had been placed on paid leave, and Long said he would conduct a review of both Petrino and Dorrell.

While Petrino’s away, Long said assistant head coach and linebackers coach Taver Johnson would serve as Arkansas’ interim head coach. The Hogs are in the middle of spring practice and will play their spring game April 21.

Ultimately, what Long will have to decide is whether or not Petrino violated the terms of his contract, which has a clause in it that would allow Arkansas to fire Petrino for “engaging in conduct, as solely determined by the university, which is clearly contrary to the character and responsibilities of a person occupying the position of head football coach or which negatively or adversely affects the reputation of the (university’s) athletics programs in any way.”

Lying or misleading the media is one thing. The same goes for the public. But when you’re not forthcoming with your bosses, that’s one of those things that tends to resonate.

Only when an Arkansas state police report confirmed Thursday that Dorrell was riding with Petrino did he come clean after initially saying through a statement released by university officials that he was alone when he crashed. He repeated that claim after finishing up his news conference on Tuesday when asked specifically by a media member if he had been alone during the crash.

Long said he didn’t find out until Thursday afternoon from Petrino that Dorrell was riding with the Hogs’ head coach, and it was later Thursday that Petrino, who is married and has four children, issued another statement acknowledging a previous inappropriate relationship.

It only muddies the situation that, according to several reports, Dorrell was engaged to marry the Hogs’ director of swimming and diving operations, Josh Morgan, in June.

Nelson Chenault/US PresswireArkansas administrators must weigh Bobby Petrino’s on-field accomplishments against his off-field actions.

Here’s Petrino’s statement in full, in which he expresses his desire to remain as Arkansas head coach:

“The state police report today provides an accurate description of my accident, which includes details that had not publically come to light prior to the report being issued. I regret that I have not publically acknowledged a passenger on the vehicle. I have been in constant pain, medicated and the circumstances involving the wreck have come out in bits and pieces. That said I certainly had a concern about Jessica Dorrell’s name being revealed. In my press conference, I referred to her simply as ‘a lady’. My concern was to protect my family and a previous inappropriate relationship from becoming public. In hindsight, I showed a serious mistake in judgment when I chose not to be more specific about those details. Today, I’ve acknowledged this previous inappropriate relationship with my family and those within the athletic department administration.

I apologize to my wife, Becky, and our four children, Chancellor (David) Gearhart, Jeff Long, the Board of Trustees, University administration, my coaching staff, student-athletes and the entire state of Arkansas. I have been humbled by the outpouring of concern and get-well wishes. I apologize to the Razorback Nation for the attention my actions have brought to the University of Arkansas and our program. I will fully cooperate with the University throughout this process and my hope is to repair my relationships with my family, my Athletic Director, the Razorback Nation and remain the head coach of the Razorbacks.”

Much will be made about the “previous inappropriate relationship” Petrino speaks of and the fact that Dorrell was out riding the countryside with him.

But the two biggest factors working against Petrino are, No. 1, that he wasn’t truthful with his superiors about the accident and lied about it publicly, and No. 2, that Dorrell was somebody who was hired to work under Petrino in the football office. If a “previous inappropriate relationship” with Petrino did indeed lead to her hiring, that’s bad news for everybody involved.

It’s especially bad news for the Arkansas fans, who deserved better.

Just when you thought the Hogs might be on the verge of breaking through and joining the SEC party in the national championship equation, this happens.

Petrino was dug in, too. He signed a contract two Decembers ago that more or less locked him down at Arkansas for the foreseeable future. I can also tell you from my conversations with Petrino that he truly believed that he could win a national championship at Arkansas and that the Hogs weren’t that far away.

The job he’d done to this point was exemplary, and even though he was castigated for leaving the Atlanta Falcons before the 2007 season was over, it was a coup for Arkansas to get a coach of Petrino’s caliber.

It all seemed to be pointing in the right direction for the Hogs, who played in their first-ever BCS bowl game in 2010 and then followed that up with 11 wins last season.

Now, in the wake of one forgettable motorcycle crash, it remains to be seen whether Petrino will get a chance to finish what he started.

(UPDATE: It resulted in Petrino’s firing.) My former pastor Adrian Rogers used to say, “If you don’t want to slip down then don’t walk in slick places.” Bobby Petrino made Jessica a close assistant and that was a real bad idea. She is not ugly enough to cut down on the temptation. True happiness is found from other things than the outside anyway so don’t always chase the good looking girl!!! Jimmy Soul had a great hit song (very funny) that went like this:

If you wanna be happy for the rest of your life
Never make a pretty woman your wife
So from my personal point of view
Get an ugly girl to marry you

If you wanna be happy for the rest of your life
Never make a pretty woman your wife
So from my personal point of view
Get an ugly girl to marry you

A pretty woman makes her husband look small
And very often causes his downfall
As soon as he marries her then she starts
To do the things that will break his heart

But if you make an ugly woman your wife
you’ll be happy for the rest of your life
An ugly woman cooks meals on time
And she’ll always give you peace of mind

AS A JUNIOR (2006)

Dorrell posted six consecutive double-figure kill matches to open the year and finished with 10 for the year including a near-career-best 16 kills in the NCAA Tournament. Dorrell’s name is sprinkled throughout the Arkansas record books. She enters the 2007 season ranked 15th in kills (803), 17th in kpg (2.21), 14th in total attempts (2004), ninth in block assists (313), 11th in total blocks (0.89), 17th in points (1010.5), points per game (2.78) and games played (363) and tied for 19th in matches played (95).

UA places Petrino on administrative leave

Posted by Max Brantley on Thu, Apr 5, 2012 at 10:09 PM

AT NEWS CONFERENCE: Jeff Long.

  • AT NEWS CONFERENCE: Jeff Long.

University of Arkansas Athletic Director Jeff Long announced at a 10 p.m. news conference that he’d placed football coach Bobby Petrino on paid administrative leave as a result of learning today that Petrino was not alone in the motorcycle crash Sunday.

Assistant Coach Taver Johnson will take over while Long said he considers the situation. He didn’t give a timetable but said he’d move “expeditiously”. Johnson said he met with Petrino tonight at 7:15, at which time Petrino acknowledged he had not told Long the full story about Sunday’s motorcycle accident, which involved Jessica Dorrell, a 25-year-old football staff employee. Long said Petrino first told him of the information in a phone call about 3:25 p.m. This was about an hour after release of the State Police report.

Long said he was disappointed in learning Petrino had not been forthcoming about the accident. The university earlier had relayed Petrino’s statement that no one else was involved in the accident and, until the late-night event at UA, had not acknowledged that was in error.

Long fielded several questions from reporters, but deferred specific responses to most pending further review. He declined to answer specifically a question about Dorrell, whom Petrino has indicated now he’d tried to protect. He said he was trying “to protect my family and a previous inappropriate relationship from becoming public.” Long said he’d spoken briefly with Dorrell. (You can replay Long news conference here.)

The Arkansas Times Blog has a good roundup on the events on Petrino and last night I watched 3 tv channels and saw their spin on Jeff Long’s press conference. On Channel 16 they speculated that Bobby Petrino’s statement was an admission that he had an affair with Jessica Dorrell. Below is Petrino’s statement from Arkansas Sports 360:

Petrino’s statement follows …

“The state police report today provides an accurate description of my accident, which includes details that had not publicly come to light prior to the report being issued. I regret that I have not publicly acknowledged a passenger on the vehicle.

_______

Petrino wants to protect his family according to the statement above and that comes out in the interview below.

What impact will breaking trust with Bobby Petrino’s family have?

Jessica Dorrell was not revealed as the passenger on Petrino’s motorcyle until yesterday.

Petrino may feel roughed up now, but he has a bigger task of restoring trust with his wife and kids ahead of him and that may another rough road he has to go down in the future.

Back in July of 2011 at church I heard our pastor say that Randy Alcorn said one of the main reasons he did not want to have an affair was:

  • Hurt to and loss of credibility with my beloved daughters, Karina and Angela. (“Why listen to a man who betrayed Mom and us?”)

THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT BOBBY PETRINO’S KIDS MUST BE SAYING NOW. THEY GREW UP THINKING THEIR FATHER HUNG THE MOON AND NOW THEY DON’T  KNOW WHAT IS AUTHENTIC ABOUT HIS FATHER’S LIFE ANY MORE.

Back in July  I went to my church, Fellowship Bible Church and heard one of our teaching pastors, Brandon Barnard, deliver a message on Sexual Purity. He pointed out that the wise thing is to keep your sex life between you and the wife of your youth as the Bible instructs. By doing that you will avoid a lot of pitfalls.

He started off the sermon by reading three chapters from Proverbs. Here are the verses:

Proverbs 5:1-23

English Standard Version (ESV)

Proverbs 5

Warning Against Adultery

1 My son, be attentive to my wisdom;
incline your ear to my understanding,
2that you may keep discretion,
and your lips may guard knowledge.
3For the lips of a forbidden[a] woman drip honey,
and her speech[b] is smoother than oil,
4but in the end she is bitter as wormwood,
sharp as a two-edged sword.
5Her feet go down to death;
her steps follow the path to[c] Sheol;
6she does not ponder the path of life;
her ways wander, and she does not know it. 7And now, O sons, listen to me,
and do not depart from the words of my mouth.
8Keep your way far from her,
and do not go near the door of her house,
9lest you give your honor to others
and your years to the merciless,
10lest strangers take their fill of your strength,
and your labors go to the house of a foreigner,
11and at the end of your life you groan,
when your flesh and body are consumed,
12and you say, “How I hated discipline,
and my heart despised reproof!
13I did not listen to the voice of my teachers
or incline my ear to my instructors.
14 I am at the brink of utter ruin
in the assembled congregation.”

15Drink water from your own cistern,
flowing water from your own well.
16Should your springs be scattered abroad,
streams of water in the streets?
17 Let them be for yourself alone,
and not for strangers with you.
18Let your fountain be blessed,
and rejoice in the wife of your youth,

19a lovely deer, a graceful doe.
Let her breasts fill you at all times with delight;
be intoxicated[d] always in her love.
20Why should you be intoxicated, my son, with a forbidden woman
and embrace the bosom of an adulteress?[e]
21For a man’s ways are before the eyes of the LORD,
and he ponders[f] all his paths.
22The iniquities of the wicked ensnare him,
and he is held fast in the cords of his sin.
23 He dies for lack of discipline,
and because of his great folly he is led astray.

Proverbs 6:20-35

English Standard Version (ESV)

Warnings Against Adultery

20 My son, keep your father’s commandment,
and forsake not your mother’s teaching.
21 Bind them on your heart always;
tie them around your neck.
22 When you walk, they[a] will lead you;
when you lie down, they will watch over you;
and when you awake, they will talk with you.
23For the commandment is a lamp and the teaching a light,
and the reproofs of discipline are the way of life,
24to preserve you from the evil woman,[b]
from the smooth tongue of the adulteress.[c]
25 Do not desire her beauty in your heart,
and do not let her capture you with her eyelashes;
26for the price of a prostitute is only a loaf of bread,[d]
but a married woman[e] hunts down a precious life.
27Can a man carry fire next to his chest
and his clothes not be burned?
28Or can one walk on hot coals
and his feet not be scorched?
29So is he who goes in to his neighbor’s wife;
none who touches her will go unpunished.
30People do not despise a thief if he steals
to satisfy his appetite when he is hungry,
31but if he is caught, he will pay sevenfold;
he will give all the goods of his house.
32He who commits adultery lacks sense;
he who does it destroys himself.
33He will get wounds and dishonor,
and his disgrace will not be wiped away.
34For jealousy makes a man furious,
and he will not spare when he takes revenge.
35He will accept no compensation;
he will refuse though you multiply gifts.

Proverbs 7:6-27

English Standard Version (ESV)

 6For at the window of my house
I have looked out through my lattice,
7and I have seen among the simple,
I have perceived among the youths,
a young man lacking sense,
8passing along the street near her corner,
taking the road to her house
9in the twilight, in the evening,
at the time of night and darkness.

10And behold, the woman meets him,
dressed as a prostitute, wily of heart.[a]
11She is loud and wayward;
her feet do not stay at home;
12now in the street, now in the market,
and at every corner she lies in wait.
13She seizes him and kisses him,
and with bold face she says to him,
14“I had to offer sacrifices,[b]
and today I have paid my vows;
15so now I have come out to meet you,
to seek you eagerly, and I have found you.
16I have spread my couch with coverings,
colored linens from Egyptian linen;
17I have perfumed my bed with myrrh,
aloes, and cinnamon.
18Come, let us take our fill of love till morning;
let us delight ourselves with love.
19For my husband is not at home;
he has gone on a long journey;
20he took a bag of money with him;
at full moon he will come home.”

21With much seductive speech she persuades him;
with her smooth talk she compels him.
22All at once he follows her,
as an ox goes to the slaughter,
or as a stag is caught fast[c]
23till an arrow pierces its liver;
as a bird rushes into a snare;
he does not know that it will cost him his life.

24And now, O sons, listen to me,
and be attentive to the words of my mouth.
25Let not your heart turn aside to her ways;
do not stray into her paths,
26for many a victim has she laid low,
and all her slain are a mighty throng.
27Her house is the way to Sheol,
going down to the chambers of death.

Then Brandon made several points concerning the scriptures. Probably the most powerful point he made was referring to the exercise that Randy Alcorn had challenged all men to make. This below is my advice to Gene Simmons.

In light of all the sexual immorality and high profile infedility, Randy Alcorn shares with us his list that counts the cost of Sexual immorality.

As Christians, this is a timely reminder.

The original link is at http://randyalcorn.blogspot.com/2009/06/counting-cost-of-sexual-immorality.html

Here is the excerpt:

Personalized List of Anticipated Consequences of Immorality

  • Grieving my Lord; displeasing the One whose opinion most matters.
  • Dragging into the mud Christ’s sacred reputation.
  • Loss of reward and commendation from God.
  • Having to one day look Jesus in the face at the judgment seat and give an account of why I did it. Forcing God to discipline me in various ways.
  • Following in the footsteps of men I know of whose immorality forfeited their ministry and caused me to shudder. List of these names:
  • Suffering of innocent people around me who would get hit by my shrapnel (a la Achan).
  • Untold hurt to Nanci, my best friend and loyal wife.
  • Loss of Nanci’s respect and trust.
  • Hurt to and loss of credibility with my beloved daughters, Karina and Angela. (“Why listen to a man who betrayed Mom and us?”)
  • If my blindness should continue or my family be unable to forgive, I could lose my wife and my children forever.
  • Shame to my family. (The cruel comments of others who would invariably find out.)
  • Shame to my church family.
  • Shame and hurt to my fellow pastors and elders. List of names:
  • Shame and hurt to my friends, and especially those I’ve led to Christ and discipled. List of names:
  • Guilt awfully hard to shake—even though God would forgive me, would I forgive myself?
  • Plaguing memories and flashbacks that could taint future intimacy with my wife.
  • Disqualifying myself after having preached to others.
  • Surrender of the things I am called to and love to do—teach and preach and write and minister to others. Forfeiting forever certain opportunities to serve God. Years of training and experience in ministry wasted for a long period of time, maybe permanently.
  • Being haunted by my sin as I look in the eyes of others, and having it all dredged up again wherever I go and whatever I do.
  • Undermining the hard work and prayers of others by saying to our community “this is a hypocrite—who can take seriously anything he and his church have said and done?”
  • Laughter, rejoicing and blasphemous smugness by those who disrespect God and the church (2 Samuel 12:14).
  • Bringing great pleasure to Satan, the Enemy of God.
  • Heaping judgment and endless problems on the person I would have committed adultery with.
  • Possible diseases (pain, constant reminder to me and my wife, possible infection of Nanci, or in the case of AIDS, even causing her death, as well as mine.)
  • Possible pregnancy, with its personal and financial implications.
  • Loss of self-respect, discrediting my own name, and invoking shame and lifelong embarrassment upon myself.

I’m older now, turned 55 a few days ago. My daughters are grown, with children of their own. But the list of consequences of immorality is larger than ever. I have two sons-in-law and four grandsons. Many people have read my books, so the circle of people I would be letting down has grown. (For resources on this subject, see my book The Purity Principle, and my booklet Sexual Temptation: How Christian Workers Can Win the Battle.)

It would still break my heart to let down my Lord Jesus and my wonderful wife. That’s why I’m more careful than ever to avoid the little compromises and indulgences that could lead to moral disaster.

If we would rehearse in advance the ugly and overwhelming consequences of immorality, we would be far more prone to avoid it.

Two choices now for Bobby Petrino: Follow the path of purity or impurity

If Bobby thinks he is bruised now, then he needs to read about the guy in Proverbs 7:10-27 and what happened to him.

I really am hoping that Bobby Petrino can put his marriage back together. He has a clear choice between two paths. In the sermon at Fellowship Bible Church at July 24, 2011, teaching pastor Brandon Barnard made a great point about the two choices that you have. You can walk down the pathway of purity or impurity. The pathway of impurity is both persuasive and inviting.

Proverbs 5:3

English Standard Version (ESV)

3For the lips of a forbidden[a] woman drip honey,
   and her speech[b] is smoother than oil,

Proverbs 6:24

English Standard Version (ESV)

24to preserve you from the evil woman,[a]
   from the smooth tongue of the adulteress.[b]

Proverbs 7:10-20

English Standard Version (ESV)

  10And behold, the woman meets him,

    dressed as a prostitute, wily of heart.[a]
11She is loud and wayward;
    her feet do not stay at home;
12now in the street, now in the market,
   and at every corner she lies in wait.
13She seizes him and kisses him,
   and with bold face she says to him,
14“I had to offer sacrifices,[b]
   and today I have paid my vows;
15so now I have come out to meet you,
   to seek you eagerly, and I have found you.
16I have spread my couch with coverings,
   colored linens from Egyptian linen;
17I have perfumed my bed with myrrh,
   aloes, and cinnamon.
18Come, let us take our fill of love till morning;
   let us delight ourselves with love.
19For my husband is not at home;
   he has gone on a long journey;
20he took a bag of money with him;
   at full moon he will come home.”

Many times men come home and hear their wife complain about something that went wrong during the day with the kids, and maybe during the same day they visited with another lady who was flirting with them. It may seem to them that the option to leave the wife and join up with this nice younger lady is a good option.  However, the Bible calls her an “evil woman.” What kind of future will have with an evil woman that is not your the wife of your youth?  Later in chapter 7 Solomon says, “All at once he follows her,    as an ox goes to the slaughter, or as a stag is caught fast[c 23till an arrow pierces its liver; as a bird rushes into a snare;    he does not know that it will cost him his life.27Her house is the way to Sheol,    going down to the chambers of death. “

Anyone who is encouraging you to leave the wife of your youth for a younger lady is not following biblical advice.

Two choices now for Bobby Petrino: Follow the path of purity or impurity
