do all religions lead to God?

“It doesn’t matter what you believe as long as you’re sincere.” It’s said that all the religions in the world could be wrong, but only one can be right. ‘Truth’ must be true for everyone, or it isn’t true for anyone; and more than that, a truth remains true whether it is believed or not. People used to believe the world was flat – that didn’t change the truth though. Truth is never purely subjective, but open to objective assessment. So, what is truth? The most important question anyone can ask – though just asking it won’t necessarily lead us anywhere. The Roman governor Pilate asked Jesus Christ the same question, and then handed him over for execution, famously washing his hands of the responsibility. No, if we are going to seek out truth, we must be willing to follow where it leads. Some people want to be drifters rather than seekers. Real seekers are on a quest for truth.

“but surely all religions lead to God?”

Many hope to find meaning and purpose through religion. But there are many faiths, and many paths a seeker may take in pursuit of truth. Aren’t they all heading in the same direction? But if we start asking some basic questions we discover how radically different they are. Does the source or essence of the religion come from outside a person or from within? Is it derived from an external power or an inner energy? If it is from outside, what is the nature of this power or cosmic force? Is ‘God’ a thing or a person? Is ‘God’ one or many?

Let’s take for example Islam, Judaism, and Christianity? Aren’t they pretty much the same – they all worship one God? A closer look reveals important differences…

  • To a Muslim, God is above and beyond this world, not involved in the daily lives of his followers, but to be worshipped and obeyed so as to avoid judgement.
  • To a Jew, God is within reach and has a plan for the world and Israel in particular. He communicated with his people through specific individuals – priests, kings and prophets. He is concerned, compassionate, jealous, loving, forgiving.
  • To a Christian, God is personal and perfectly revealed in the life of Jesus Christ – the human face of God. Christianity builds upon the Jewish understanding of God; He is a tri-unity – Father, Son and Spirit – above and beyond the world – yet fully engaged within it and desiring us to know him personally.

Some might think that if all good people follow their own religious pathways it would bring about unity of the faiths, mutual respect, and cooperation leading to world peace. Could all these paths lead to the same destination? If that were the case, there’d be no need to argue about which religion is the true one. But what if all paths do not lead to the same destination? As we’ve seen, religious traditions and beliefs differ significantly from one another. Some teach that there are many gods, others that there is only one; some that God is personal, others that God is not. They cannot all be true, and thus it cannot be true that all religions lead to the same destination.

Christianity is the only religion that claims man cannot earn his way to God, but that it is a gift of God through faith. But Christianity’s claim to exclusivity is not for a ‘religion’ – but for a person; that Jesus Christ is the only true Saviour. Even membership of the Christian church does not automatically lead to salvation; only a personal faith response to Christ. Only Christianity teaches that Jesus is God. He cannot be both God and not God. The claims of Jesus are unique. ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me’. There are really only three possible responses to his claim – to believe him, to disbelieve him or to withhold belief. The choice is ours.

In his youth, goalkeeper Iain Brunnschweiler played guitar alongside Coldplay drummer Will Champion in a little-known Southampton band called Fat Hamster.”

Brunnschweiler recalled: “We were quite young when we first knew each other, about 12 or 13 years old, and we used to go to the youth activities group at Highfield Church. Will lived in Portswood and I lived in Glen Eyre and we got together with another lad, David Milln, to form a three-piece band. I played the guitar and tried to sing, but I was absolute rubbish!”

While former Hampshire Cricket wicket-keeper Brunnschweiler went on to excel in sport, his old bandmates followed musical careers.

“Will went off to university at UCL in London and met up with Chris Martin and the others to form Coldplay and David’s now a successful drum and bass DJ called DJ Sciphi,” said the 27-year-old, who combines his Totton goalkeeping duties with the role of assistant coach at Hampshire Cricket.

He laughed: “Out of the trio, you’ve got one who plays in one of the world’s biggest bands, one who’s had some singles out as a DJ and me who’s got nothing to do with music any more.Recording a song for Wembley with Totton is the height of my musical career!”

Chris Martin revealed in his interview with Howard Stern that he was rasied an evangelical Christian but he has left the church. I believe that many words that he puts in his songs today are generated from the deep seated Christian beliefs from his childhood that find their way out in his life. His belief in being generous with charities, and the fact Coldplay’s songs  deal so much with death and the search for meaning and purpose of life (similar to Solomon’s search in Ecclesiastes), that our actions are being watched, and Chris describes different ways God tries to reveal himself to us, and many songs deal with trying to find a way to an afterlife and heaven, and he stills uses Christian terms like being “blessed” and “grateful.”

Up to this point many people may be saying that this is all based on some pretty flimsy evidence. However, one of the most revealing things came out when Chris wrote the song “Viva La Vida.” He had previously said he left Christianity because of the biblical view of eternal damnation but what does Chris do with the evil king in the song “Viva La Vida?”  Q Magazine asked Chris Martin about the lyric in this song “I know Saint Peter won’t call my name.” Martin said,  “It’s about…You’re not on the list… Its always fascinated me that idea of finishing your life and then being analyzed on it…That is the most frightening thing you could possibly say to somebody. Eternal damnation.  I know it. It’s mildly terrifying to me. And this is serious.”

Maybe we have heard the last of this journey from Chris?

Dan Mitchell on the minimum wage law (includes two editorial cartoons)

It seems that everything President Obama does to help the economy actually does the opposite.

Should the federal government make life more difficult for low-skilled workers?

I hope everyone will emphatically say “NO!”

Heck, most people understandably will think you’re crazy for even asking such a preposterous question.

Minimum Wage Cartoon 2But some of those people will also think that it’s a good idea for politicians in Washington to make low-skilled workers less attractive to employers by raising the minimum wage.

I often ask such people whether they are more likely to buy a Big Mac if McDonald’s raises the price by 24 percent. They say they are less likely.

I then ask them if they are more likely to buy a car if GM increases the price of a Buick by 24 percent. They say less likely, of course.

But they seem to have a blind spot when I ask them whether employers will be more likely or less likely to hire low-skilled workers when the government increases the cost of those workers by 24 percent.

The interviewer, by the way, seems to be economically illiterate.

He apparently believes that we can reduce inequality by pricing poor people out of the job market. He also blames companies for sitting on piles of cash, presumably unaware that firms only will invest if there are profitable opportunities.

Minimum Wage CartoonAt one point, I delicately state that one of his questions “betrays a certain lack of historical knowledge,” which is a polite way of saying “you’re either lying or you have no idea what you’re talking about.”

Ultimately, I try to help him understand by comparing fast-growing economies such Hong Kong and Singapore, which have relatively low burdens of government, with slow-growth economies such as France and Italy, where politicians ostensibly seek to “help” people with various forms of intervention.

I’m not sure I made any progress, so feel free to suggest other ways of convincing skeptics that freedom is better than statism.

Anyway, for those who want more information, this video explains the underlying economics of the minimum wage. We also have plenty of evidence (see here and here) that unemployment rose following the most recent hike in the minimum wage.

The ASTRA Award winning music documentary – Max Masters Coldplay – was voted MOST OUTSTANDING MUSIC PROGRAM for 2009.

Sarah Linton Productions and The Post Box produced the Max Masters documentary to coincide with the album release of ‘Viva la Vida’.

In an interview with Irish online magazine Independent.ie, when asked if he was rediscovered God based on Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friendsspiritual content. Martin responded that he was still trying to figure out who “he or she or it is,” admitting he doesn’t know who is right, whether it is, “Jesus, Allah, Mohammad or Zeus Finally in a text message to the magazine’s interviewer, Chris Martin wrote that he is “Alltheist” a word he made up meaning “he believes in everything.”

Chris Martin is devastated over his parents’ divorce.

The Coldplay frontman is said to be finding it “incredibly difficult emotionally” to come to terms with the end of his mother and father’s 30-year marriage.

His father Anthony, 69, has put the family’s £1.25 million home in Exeter, South West England, on the market after his wife Alison decided to leave.

The family moved there in 1978 when Chris – the eldest of their five children – was just a baby.

Now retired accountant and magistrate Anthony is in a new relationship and Alison, 57, is renting a flat in London where she works as a music therapy teacher.

An insider said: “Chris has always been extremely close to his father, while some of his sisters have had very strong relationships with their mother. But watching his parents split has been heartbreaking for him, and he’s desperate to stay close and in regular contact with both of them.”

Chris, 33, has been visiting both his parents with his wife Gwyneth Paltrow but is finding it hard to see them live apart.

The source added to the Daily Mirror newspaper: “Chris visited his mother’s new place in London around a week ago, which was a strain for him emotionally. One of the most upsetting aspects of the break-up has been their decision to sell their family home. He was less than one year old when his parents moved in, and the house holds a lot of memories for him.”

Summary:

SAFE HAVEN is a drama about a woman running away from a mysterious past, only to find romance with a widowed business owner with two little children, living in a small town. SAFE HAVEN is very well done, with strong moral elements, but a bedroom scene shows too much and there’s an occult revelation about a ghost influencing some events and some actions.


Review:

SAFE HAVEN is a very well done romance, with a couple interesting mysteries at the center of its plot. Sadly, there’s a lightly depicted extramarital sex scene in the middle. Also, a ghost turns out to have played a role in some situations and events. The ghost also plays a role in helping to get the two main characters together. There’s a lot of good in SAFE HAVEN, but the Romantic, occult content makes it unacceptable, though perhaps not abhorrent, viewing.

Based on a novel by Nicholas Sparks, the movie opens with a distraught woman running away from a house and hopping on a bus. A man’s arm can be seen lying on the floor in the house. (Later on, a flashback will show the woman carrying a bloody knife before leaving.) As the woman gets on the bus, a detective is hot on her trail, but he doesn’t see the bus she took.

On its way to Atlanta, the bus stops at a small seaside town in North Caroline called Southport. The blond-haired woman decides to stay in Southport. She gets a job as a waitress at a small seafood restaurant near the beach. She tells the owner her name is Katie.

Katie rents an isolated rundown cabin in the nearby woods. One day, she finds a young black-haired woman snooping in her windows. The woman introduces herself as Jo and tells Katie that she too has a quiet cabin nearby.

In the town, Katie is eventually drawn to Alex, the town’s widowed grocery store owner and his two young children, especially his cute daughter, Lexie. Jo encourages Katie to let down her guard, and Katie starts falling in love with Alex.

Meanwhile, the detective, Gavin, is still investigating Katie’s mysterious escape. He finally finds which bus she got on and realizes she’s dyed her hair blond and cut it short. So, he puts out a poster saying she’s wanted for murder.

Of course, things come to a head, and the truth about Katie’s past is revealed. The jeopardy increases a hundredfold for Katie. It threatens to destroy Alex and his family in its wake.

SAFE HAVEN is an excellently developed romance and mystery. The characters are well defined, and the performances by the two leads, Julianne Hough and Josh Duhamel, are appealing. Finally, the jeopardy in the third act is very suspenseful.

For the most part, SAFE HAVEN is a relatively clean movie. However, in the middle, there’s a sex scene between Katie and Alex. The movie implies that they’re fully naked under the covers as they passionately kiss one another. This sex scene isn’t crude, but it does show enough to be labeled a depicted sex scene rather than just an implied one.

The extramarital sex is strong enough to give the movie a mixed pagan worldview with strong Romantic elements. In the Romantic worldview created by Jean-Jacques Rousseau and others, traditional Christian, biblical values such as “no sex before marriage” and no adultery or polygamy are stifling rules meant to be broken repeatedly. If it weren’t for the sex scene in the middle of SAFE HAVEN, the movie would have a strong moral worldview, because, otherwise, the movie firmly extols positive values like taking care of children, protecting one’s family, being kind and caring, and finding true love to make a family. In fact, the scenes with Alex’s children are among the most delightful, heartwarming scenes in the entire movie.

The worldview in SAFE HAVEN is also mixed because [possible spoiler] the ghost of Alex’s wife turns out to have influenced some of the events in the plot. She also turns out to have played a role in influencing Alex and Katie to get together. This occult revelation doesn’t negate the story’s strong positive elements. However, when added to the extramarital sex scene, it makes the movie unacceptable viewing according to biblical standards of truth and goodness. SAFE HAVEN is not an abhorrent movie, but it does cross one too many lines.


In Brief:

As they fall in love, a detective with an ulterior motive comes to town to find Katie. The danger increases a hundredfold for Katie. It threatens to destroy Alex and his family in its wake.

SAFE HAVEN is an excellently developed romance and mystery. The characters are well defined, and the performances of the two leads are appealing. The ending is very suspenseful. Sadly, there’s a bedroom scene between Katie and Alex that reveals too much. The movie’s strong moral elements are also undercut by a revelation that the ghost of Alex’s wife has influenced some of the events and some of the two lovers’ actions. The combination of these negative elements makes SAFE HAVEN unacceptable.

“Woody Wednesday” Another look at Woody Allen’s movie Crimes and Misdemeanors

I have spent alot of time talking about Woody Allen films on this blog and looking at his worldview. He has a hopeless, meaningless, nihilistic worldview that believes we are going to turn to dust and there is no afterlife. Even though he has this view he has taken the opportunity to look at the weaknesses of his own secular view. I salute him for doing that. That is why I have returned to his work over and over and presented my own Christian worldview as an alternative. Take a moment and read again a good article on Woody Allen below. SYNOPSIS: Woody Allen’s “Crimes and Misdemeanors” intertwines two stories. The first involves Judah, a wealthy ophthalmologist and family man, who has had a several-year affair with Dolores. Dolores threatens to go public regarding the affair and Judah’s shady financial dealings unless Judah leaves his wife. Judah calls on his mobster brother to kill Dolores, which he does. The second storyline involves Cliff, a nerdy and unsuccessful documentary filmmaker, who is in an unhappy marriage. While working on a documentary about a TV personality named Lester, Cliff falls in love with Halley, a network producer. Halley rebuffs Cliff because he is married. When Cliff finally gets divorced, Halley has become engaged to Lester. Throughout both storylines discussions arise about God’s role in establishing ethical values, and whether the world would be valueless if God didn’t exist. Judah and Cliff meet up at the end of the film, and Judah presents an anonymous version of the murder – as though it might be a plot for a movie. It becomes clear that Judah got away with the murder, and suffered no long-term guilt. The film was nominated for several Academy Awards, including best screenplay and best director.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:

1. According to the DVD commentary, Allen views his film as “revisiting the themes he examined 15 years earlier in the farce Love and Death, [and] ideas such as God, faith, and justice. ‘Existential subjects to me,’ says the filmmaker, ‘are still the only subjects worth dealing with.’” What are some examples of existential positions throughout the film?

2. Speaking to Judah, Rabbi Ben states the two key moral positions of the movie: “It’s a fundamental difference in the way we view the world. You see it as harsh and empty of values and pitiless. And I couldn’t go on living if I didn’t feel it with all my heart a moral structure, with real meaning, and forgiveness, and a higher power, otherwise there’s no basis to live.” Is there an in between position?

3. According to the DVD commentary, Allen used eyes as a pervasive metaphor in the film. Judah is an eye doctor, the rabbi eventually goes blind, etc. “Crimes and Misdemeanors is about people who don’t see. They don’t see themselves as others see them. They don’t see the right and wrong of situations.” Allen notes that the rabbi is not only physically blind, but metaphorically blind “to other things, to the realities of life.” He believes, though, that the rabbi’s blindness is also a gift. “He’s blessed and lucky because he has… the best gift anyone could have. He has genuine religious faith.” Must one be blind to the world’s problems to have genuine religious faith?

4. Although Allen claims that the rabbi is detached from the reality of the world, clearly Judah is as detached as the rabbi if not more. During an imaginary conversation with rabbi Ben, Judah describes three levels of aloofness that are characterized in the movie by himself, Ben, and Jack. “God is a luxury I can’t afford,” Judah states. Ben replies, “Now you’re talking like your brother Jack.” “Jack lives in the real world,” Judah continues. “You live in the kingdom of heaven. I manage to keep free of that real world, but suddenly it’s found me.” In both cases, aloofness is caused by a particular worldview. In the case of the rabbi, the view is that the world originates from a wholly good God. In the case of Judah, it is the view that he himself is a moral person, which view causes him to ignore his own “questionable moves.” Is the only way to be honest with oneself to have a twisted or lacking sense of morals, like Jack the mobster?

5. Rabbi Ben tells Judah that “without the law it’s all darkness.” Judah retorts, “What good is the law if it prevents me from receiving justice? Is what she’s doing to me just? Is this what I deserve?” Judah’s situations is caused directly or indirectly by choices he’s made, even though he may not have understood at the time he made them their full implications for the future. Can Judah, therefore, be held morally responsible for creating his own situation?

6. In Cliff’s documentary footage on Louis Levy, Levy states “Now the unique thing that happened to the early Israelites was that they conceived a God that cares. He cares, but at the same time he also demands that you behave morally. But here comes the paradox. What’s one of the first things that that God asks: that God asks Abraham to sacrifice his only son, his beloved son to him. In other words, in spite of millennia of efforts we have not succeeded to create a really and entirely loving image of God. This was beyond our capacity to imagine.” Is Levy right about the limitations of the human notion of God, and, if so, what is behind this limitation?

7. In the documentary footage, Levy comments on the nature of love. “You will notice that what we are aiming at when we fall in love is a very strange paradox. The paradox consists of the fact that when we fall in love we are seeking to re-find all or some of the people to whom we were attached as children. On the other hand we ask of our beloved to correct all of the wrongs that these early parents or siblings inflicted on us. So that love contains in it a contradiction, the attempt to return to the past and the attempt to undo the past.” Is this an accurate notion of the nature of love?

8. Visiting his childhood house, Judah imagines his family celebrating the Passover dinner. He asks what happens if a man kills. The image of his father answers, “then one way or another he’ll be punished.” “If he’s caught, Saul,” interjects an uncle. The father continues, “If he’s not caught that which originates from a black deed will blossom in a foul manner.” His aunt “And I say if he can do it and get away with it, and he chooses not to be bothered by the ethics, then he’s home free. Remember, history is written by the winners. And if the Nazis had won, future generations would understand the story of World War II quite differently.” Is there a middle ground between these two positions?

9. Continuing the imaginary Passover dialog, the uncle asks Judah’s father, “And if all your faith is wrong, Saul, I mean just what if?” The father answers, “Then I’ll still have a better life than all those that doubt.” The aunt asks, “Do you mean that you prefer God to the truth?” The father responds, “If necessary I will always choose God over truth.” Why would someone knowingly choose religious faith over truth?

10. After Levy committed suicide, Cliff reviewed a clip from the documentary footage in which Levy states: “But we must always remember that when we are born we need a great deal of love to persuade us to stay in life. Once we get that love, it usually lasts us. But the universe is a pretty cold place. It’s we who invest it with our feelings. And under certain conditions, we feel that the thing isn’t worth it anymore.” Is this an accurate picture of why people give up on life?

11. Hearing the news of Levy’s death, Halley says, “No matter how elaborate a philosophical system you work out, in the end it’s got to be incomplete.” Halley is probably right. Why must a philosophical system necessarily be incomplete?

12. Near the end of the film Judah explains his murder story as though it might be a plot to a movie. Cliff responds, “I would have him turn himself in. Then your movie assumes tragic proportions, because in the absence of a God he is forced to assume that responsibility himself. Then you have tragedy.” What specifically would make this a tragedy?

13. At the close of the movie, Levy has the final word in a voice over narration: “It is only we, with out capacity to love, that give meaning to an indifferent universe. And yet, most human beings seem to have the ability to keep trying and find joy from simple things – from their family, their work, and from the hope that future generations might understand more.” Is this sufficient to give like meaning?

REVIEWS

Crimes and Misdemeanors is a Woody Allen film that takes a serious and entertaining look at ethics and morality. It focuses on the lives of two very different men, Judah Rosenthal and Cliff Stern. The audience watches as the characters lives intersect one another and these two characters take different approaches to life and their choices based on their moral and ethical views. One of the strengths of this film is that it was enjoyable. This was a completely different type of film than, Baraka or Mindwalk, which take the non-verbal and completely verbal styles, respectively. Crimes and Misdemeanors had humor, good writing and acting, blood, and a guy poops on some woman’s chest. Those things just wouldn’t fit in Baraka or Mindwalk. The fact that this movie can mention a person pooping on another person in a sexual context and at the same time by end of the movie leave you to wonder whether God has anything to do with your moral decisions or not, is something that should not be overlooked when praising this movie. But even the pooping has a purpose in the film I believe. The movie discusses whether there are certain actions that are always right or wrong. For instance, wouldn’t it be better for Judah to have his girlfriend murdered rather than for the truth to be left out in the open. The film is scary in that, as I was watching I found myself thinking “Well, yeah, you’ve got to kill her Judah, it’s the best way to go.” This may because I’m so desensitized in the content of the films I watch, or the writing in the film was so good that you can identify and sympathize with Judah much more than his girlfriend. This was an excellent film that has caused me to seek out other Woody Allen films. I highly recommend. — Levitator

Crimes and Misdemeanors: This Woody Allen film discusses the philosophical issues of morality and existentialism by entering the life of Judah Rosenthal, an ophthalmologist in New York City. Judah begins revisiting his religious upbringing once his conscience is filled with guilt after having his discontented mistress murdered. Once Judah realizes that he will go unpunished because of his social status and connections, his conscience launches him into a philosophical dilemma, in which he must question his faith and morality. When speaking to Judah, Rabbi Ben highlights the two opposing religious philosophies presented in the movie: It’s a fundamental difference in the way we view the world. You see it as harsh and empty of values and pitiless. And I couldn’t go on living if I didn’t feel it with all my heart a moral structure, with real meaning, and forgiveness, and a higher power, otherwise there’s no basis to live. From Rabbi Ben’s perspective, Judah represents the existentialist philosophy of religion in that it is nonexistent, and that the world is cold and empty of values. This view contrasts greatly with the not only physically but also metaphorically blind Rabbi Ben, whom director Woody Allen commented on saying: He’s blessed and lucky because he has… the best gift anyone could have. He has genuine religious faith. Once Judah realizes that he will continue living his comfortable life unscathed, his situation becomes an example of moral relativism in that there are no universal moral truths. A flashback Judah experiences in the film presents the two opposing moral philosophies he contemplates. He imagines coming upon his family during a Passover dinner during his childhood, and he asks what the consequence would be if a man killed. His father answers: Then one way or another he’ll be punished. If he’s caught, Saul, interjects his uncle. His father continues: If he’s not caught that which originates from a black deed will blossom in a foul manner. Then his aunt said: And I say if he can do it and get away with it, and he chooses not to be bothered by the ethics, then he’s home free. Remember, history is written by the winners. And if the Nazis had won, future generations would understand the story of World War II quite differently. — J.D.

New York is the real winner in medicaid expansion  while Arkansas would lose out in the long run. The Arkansas Times has reported that Republican lawmakers were warming up to the idea of expansion recently.

The Medicaid expansion is touted by proponents of Obamacare as a “no-brainer.” While it is true that some states may see projected savings, it is erroneous to claim that this experience applies to every state.

Proponents predict that by expanding Medicaid states will be able to reduce payments to health care providers, such as hospitals, for uncompensated care. As a matter of fact, nationally, the opposite is true:

  • 40 of 50 states are projected to see increases in costs due to the Medicaid expansion.
  • The majority of states see costs exceed savings when the federal match rate is lowered after the first three years. From there, state costs continue to climb, dwarfing any projected savings.
  • State savings are concentrated in large states. New York is estimated to see $33 billion in savings, while Massachusetts is estimated to save $6 billion over 10 years. Because of the design of their current programs, these states have a unique opportunity to restructure their programs and transfer significant cost to the federal ledger. (continues below chart)

Of course, even these savings are highly speculative. They assume that uncompensated care costs actually decrease under a Medicaid expansion. Analysis of other states shows that this is not always the case. In fact, in Maine, uncompensated care continued to grow.

Furthermore, the assumed reductions in state supplemental payments to providers for uncompensated care are conditional on state lawmakers enacting explicit payment cuts. Depending on policies adopted by state lawmakers, those reductions could be higher or lower—or even zero—if a state does not enact payment cuts.

As Heritage analyst Ed Haislmaier points out:

Under Obamacare, it is even more implausible to assume states would be able to cut uncompensated care funding. That’s because any state payment cuts would have to be imposed on top of Obamacare’s federal payment cuts. Obamacare cuts federal Medicaid “Disproportionate Share Hospital” (DSH) funding by $18.1 billion and Medicare DSH funding by $22.1 billion over the years 2014–2020.

Therefore, Haislmaier predicts, “governors and state legislators should expect their state’s hospitals and clinics to lobby them for more—not less—state funding to replace cuts in federal DSH payments.”

The Medicaid expansion represents a massive increase in federal and state spending. Although some claim that states could experience savings, it is clear that this is the exception, not the rule. Expanding Medicaid will ultimately cost states in the long run.

Methodology

A Kaiser Foundation/Urban Institute study from November 2012 projected the cost and coverage effects of the Medicaid expansion over the first nine years (2014–2022). Of particular interest to state lawmakers are the study’s projected changes in state expenditures associated with each state adopting the Medicaid expansion. However, the Kaiser/Urban study reports only the net effects for each state on a cumulative basis.

The Heritage microsimulation model was used to replicate the Kaiser/Urban study—applying the same assumptions and using the same data sources—but reported the results in disaggregated form.

Consistent with the Kaiser/Urban methodology:

  • Growth paths are estimated contingent on model-estimated enrollment growth for all 50 states. These growth paths are then benchmarked to the Urban/Kaiser aggregate results.
  • We model that adults between 100 percent and 138 percent of the federal poverty level already enrolled in Medicaid as part of an optional population are funded by the enhanced federal match rates for the expansion population. Additionally, states that currently provide limited Medicaid benefits to adults in the same income range also receive the expansion match rates for providing full Medicaid coverage to those adults. As a result of these assumptions, states with already low uninsured rates among the expansion population are projected to be “winners” under the Medicaid expansion.
  • We apply to state supplemental payments to providers for uncompensated care the Kaiser/Urban assumptions that state funding accounts for 30 percent of total funding and that state funding is eventually reduced by one-third.

It is important to note that the assumed reductions in state supplemental payments to providers for uncompensated care are not automatic but are conditional on state lawmakers enacting explicit payment cuts.

The estimates also do not reflect the fact that many states could achieve additional savings by reducing Medicaid income eligibility for adults to federally mandated minimum levels, thus making the affected individuals eligible instead for federally subsidized exchange coverage.

Both provider payment cuts and changes to income eligibility require separate policy decisions by state lawmakers. Furthermore, state lawmakers could make changes to either or both policies regardless of whether they elect to implement the Medicaid expansion.

Like the Urban Institute’s Health Insurance Policy Simulation Model, which was used to produce the original study, Heritage’s microsimulation model is comprised of data from the Current Population Survey and Medical Expenditure Panel Survey.

Calipari at a loss after Arkansas game

Calipari thought things looked pretty bad after the Tennessee 30 point loss but then the Wildcats came out and played good since then, but then at Fayetteville, Arkansas on March 2, 2013 things did not look so good.

John Calipari said that Arkansas went with a small line-up like Tennessee did a few weeks ago and that caused Kentucky lots of problems. Calipari noted that Tennessee had gone on a 6 game win streak after doing that and that Arkansas also was much more dangerous when they are small and quick.

Now the NCAA tournament will be looking at letting Florida in but beyond that it is a complete guess on my part on who gets in. Kentucky has two games left, Georgia on the road and Florida in Lexington. If they drop both of them will they get in?

If Arkansas wins both of their last two games and wins two in the SEC tournament then I think they are in. The same is probably true about Tennessee and some other teams in the SEC. Is Missouri already in? I think they are but if they lose their next three games then they probably are not.

He’s cajoled, pleaded, talked, yelled, coaxed, chattered, heart-monitored, instructed, lectured, dodge-balled — anything and everything.”We’re a brand new team,” he said again Saturday after UK lost 73-60 to Arkansas.If so, it’s a brand new team with the same old problem.It remains young.Just when you think it has gained some hard-earned confidence, it comes up soft.Rephrase that: Just when it foolishly thinks it has done something, it learns it hasn’t really done anything at all.”They embrace success and this is what happens,” Calipari said with a knowing glance. “Especially when you think the other team is going to play like it’s an AAU game, that they’re not going to play hard.”‘(It’s like) why are you playing so hard? Why are you all over me?’ Because they want to win. Because they have a desire to win.”Arkansas played as hard Saturday as it always seems to play at home, where Mike Anderson’s club has now won 13 straight, where the Hogs are 16-1 this season and 33-4 since Anderson became head coach.But Kentucky’s 13-point loss wasn’t just about being outscored 30-2 off turnovers, or getting off 26 fewer shots, or allowing Arkansas to grab 20 offensive rebounds.No, the seeds of this performance were sown after the Cats foolishly thought a three-game win streak — all three coming in the friendly confines of Rupp Arena, two over teams in the bottom quarter of the SEC standings — meant they had “turned the corner” and experienced “a breakthrough.”Uh, not so fast.Calipari is old enough to know better. Asked Friday about his team’s so-called “breakthrough,” the coach gave a “we’ll see”-type answer.So we did.”I wake up every day and don’t know how the team will play,” said Calipari, who has been bothered by a dental problem of late. “I hoped that (we were past this) but … “Just as Kentucky fans hoped the win over Missouri had punched the team’s NCAA dance card, the loss to Arkansas might not hurt the Cats’ standing in the eyes of the committee — even Florida lost at Arkansas — but it surely didn’t help, either.”We’ve got a couple of guys who are overwhelmed by stuff, and that’s typical freshmen,” Calipari said. “When you get overwhelmed, you get anxiety and you back up.”The past three years, UK has enjoyed atypical freshmen. Some were already mature. Others matured quickly. Calipari has pretty much known what he was going to get game after game, and most of it was good. Really good.It hasn’t been that way this season. His first three seasons at UK, Calipari lost one game by double digits. This year, he’s lost five. Three of those came with Nerlens Noel in the lineup.Calipari has tried to speed up the growing up. (This is not a guy who lacks ideas or is unwilling to try new things.) Open letter to President Obama (Part 257)

Dear Mr. President,

I know that you receive 20,000 letters a day and that you actually read 10 of them every day. I really do respect you for trying to get a pulse on what is going on out here.

I think the federal government needs a lot of limitations put on it but it still keeps growing and growing in power.

Thomas Sowell, George Will, and Walter Williams have all explained that the Constitution imposes strict limits on the powers of the federal government. This means, for all intents and purposes, that it is a somewhat anti-democratic document.

And by anti-democratic, I mean the Constitution puts restrictions on democracy (not restrictions on the Democratic Party, though in this case…).

More specifically, it doesn’t matter if a majority of people want Obamacare or a Department of Education. We live in a constitutional republic, a system specifically designed to protect individual liberties from tyranny.

The Founding Fathers obviously didn’t want our freedoms to be subject to the whims of a king, but they also wanted to protect us from the tyranny of the majority.

This is one of the reasons why I’m so happy to share this short video from the folks at the Institute of Humane Studies. The Supreme Court may have wimped out in fulfilling its role of  protecting us against untrammeled majoritarianism, but at least we can understand why it’s a good idea to protect economic liberty.

Under a democratic system of government, how is an individual protected from the tyranny of the majority? According to Professor Munger, democratic constitutions consist of two parts: one defining the limits within which decisions can be made democratically, and the other establishing the process by which decisions will be made. In the United States Constitution, the individual is protected from majority decisions. Professor Munger warns, however, that these protections are slowly being stripped away as American courts of law fail to recognize the limits of what can be decided by majority rule. Professor Munger uses the case of Kelo v. New London to illustrate the dangers of confusing majority rule with a democratic system.

John Lennon “Music Monday”

John Lennon, Rock Culture, and Eternity

It may have been “twenty years ago today, Sgt. Pepper taught the band to play,” as the Beatles sang about in their 1967 album “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band,” but I in fact wish to go back one more decade. Old folks like me will well know what I am talking about here.

Exactly thirty years ago today, ex-Beatle John Lennon was shot to death outside of his New York apartment. It is always a great tragedy when anyone’s life is cut short prematurely. Undoubtedly his worldwide legion of fans will be especially saddened today.

He of course is not the only rock celebrity to die young. On occasion I give a talk on popular music. I point out just how many of these lives have been cut short. Indeed, it is incredible just how many rock stars and pop stars have died young. Here are just a few of the more well known cases:

Brian Jones (Rolling Stones), died July 1969, age 27, drug related
Jimi Hendrix, died September 1970, age 27, drug overdose
Jim Morrison (Doors), died July 1971, age 27, drug overdose
Janis Joplin, died October 1970, age 27, drug overdose
Duane Allman (Allman Brothers Band), died October 1971, age 25, motorcycle accident
Elvis Presley, died August 1977, age 42, drug related
Bon Scott (AC/DC), died February 1980, age 33, alcohol related
Stevie Ray Vaughan, died August 1990, age 35, helicopter crash, but drug and alcohol problems
Freddy Mercury (Queen), died November 1991, age 45, AIDS related
Kurt Cobain (Nirvana), died April 1994, age 27, suicide
Michael Hutchence (INXS), died November 1997, aged 37, drug and alcohol related suicide

There are in fact many hundreds of other such examples. One can ask just what it is about the rock scene that results in so many premature deaths. But let me get back to John Lennon. He was clearly a colourful figure, as well as part of one of the great pop song-writing teams of all time (Lennon and McCartney).

He certainly caused major waves back in 1966 when he said in an interview, “Christianity will go. It will vanish and shrink … We’re more popular than Jesus now – I don’t know which will go first, rock and roll or Christianity.” Well, he did not quite get that right. Christianity is still here, while he and the Beatles are not.

It seems that he never did come to know the one true God who created him, and the Redeemer who died to save him. Indeed, he is also noted for his rather silly atheist anthem, “Imagine”. It begins this way:

I have seen John MacArthur on Larry King Show many times and I thought you would like to see some of these episodes. I have posted several of John MacArthur’s sermons in the past and my favorite is his sermon on the Tyre prophecy.
