Edith Schaeffer, co-founder of L’Abri Fellowship and widow of theologian-philosopher Francis Schaeffer, died on Friday at age 98. Here are 9 things you should know about Mrs. Schaeffer:

1. Schaeffer was born in Wenzhou, China to missionaries who were serving with the China Inland Mission.

2. In addition to her English name, her parents gave her the Chinese name Mei Fuh, meaning “beautiful happiness”.

3. On June 26th, 1932, Edith attended a meeting in her liberal Presbyterian church where a Unitarian minister delivered an address on “How I know that Jesus is Not the Son of God, and How I Know that the Bible is not the Word of God.” She was prepared to offer a rebuttal when a young man stood up and said, “My name is Francis Schaeffer and I want to say that I know Jesus is the Son of God, and He is also my Savior.” After Francis delivered his testimony, Edith added a brief apologetic for the truth of the Bible. The two began dating that night and married three years later.

4. To put her husband Francis through seminary, Edith tailored men’s suits and made gowns and wedding dresses for private clients.

5. After three years serving in active parish ministries in the United States, the Schaeffers moved their family to Switzerland in 1948 to help churches in their efforts to resist both liberalism in theology and existentialism in the culture after World War II.

6. L’Abri Fellowship began in Switzerland in 1955 when Francis and Edith decided in faith to open their home to be a place where people might find satisfying answers to their questions and practical demonstration of Christian care. It was called L’Abri, the French word for “shelter,” because they sought to provide a shelter from the pressures of a relentlessly secular 20th century.

7. By 1960, L’Abri had become such a phenomenon that it attracted the notice of Time magazine. Edith’s “Family Letter” had a circulation of 1,300, and her Sunday evening “High Tea” was hosting upwards of 50 people from around the world every week.

8. Edith helped to restore and popularize the all-but-lost arts of hospitality and homemaking within the evangelical community during the last twentieth-century. As she wrote in her book, What is a Family?, “There needs to be a homemaker exercising some measure of skill, imagination, creativity, desire to fulfill needs and give pleasure to others in the family. How precious a thing is the human family. It it not worth some sacrifice in time, energy, safety, discomfort, work? Does anything come forth without work?”

9. Edith wrote or co-wrote 20 books, two less than her husband. Two of her books (Affliction) and (The Tapestry: the Life and Times of Francis and Edith Schaeffer) won the Gold Medallion Award from the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association.

Many in the press made a big deal about the 40th birthday of Roe v Wade but there are over 55 million aborted unborn babies in heaven wishing they had at least one birthday as this wonderful editorial cartoon illustrates.

(Francis did a great job in his film series “How Should we then live?” in looking at how humanism has affected art and culture in the Western World in the last 2000 years. My favorite episodes include his study of the Renaissance, the Revolutionary age, the age of Nonreason, and the age of Fragmentation.)

But tack on eight more zeroes to that budget and you have the checkbook for our out-of-control, big-spending federal government.

Yet when Congress and President Obama agreed on a deal last week to raise the debt ceiling and resume government spending, people reacted as if a disaster was averted — instead of reacting as if a disaster had resumed. It has. And it continues.

Congratulating ourselves for raising the debt ceiling once again, the way we do every time this drama plays out, is like congratulating an alcoholic for talking the bartender out of cutting him off.

As with alcoholics, there’s a deeper problem here. It’s not just that America is addicted to debt. Everyone agrees we should pay our bills, just not when or how. The deeper addiction is to government.

For most of the history of America, federal spending never took up more than 5 percent of the economy. Spending increased during wars, but after World Wars I and II, spending dropped back to prewar levels.

Then came Presidents Johnson and Nixon and the “great society.” From then on, spending rose even in peacetime. Now, if you include local government, government spending makes up more than 40 percent of the economy.

“Government has exploded in size,” warned economist Dan Mitchell of the Cato Institute. It happens because of “politicians promising things they cannot deliver and imposing tax burdens that are crippling private sectors.”

Politicians from both parties criticize spending when they’re out of power. But then they increase spending once they’re in power.

I’d forgotten that when Obama campaigned for the presidency, he was very upset about his predecessor’s deficits. Sen. Obama complained, “The way Bush has done it over the last eight years is to take out a credit card from the bank of China. … We now have over $9 trillion of debt that we are going to have to pay back. … That is irresponsible.”

I agree! $9 trillion in debt is totally irresponsible. That makes it all the more remarkable that just a few years later, under President Obama, debt increased to $17 trillion. But now, suddenly, this vast debt is no longer irresponsible. Today the president says what is irresponsible is for Congress not to constantly raise the debt ceiling.

The problem isn’t just politicians. I showed people on the street a chart that documented America’s unsustainable spending. People were horrified and said government “should make cuts.” But when I asked, “What programs would you cut?” most could not name a single significant program.

So let me make some suggestions: Eliminate NPR and PBS funding. Cut foreign aid. End the war on drugs. Kill Fannie and Freddie, which financed America’s mortgages and helped cause the financial crisis. Eliminate cabinet departments like Commerce, Energy, Agriculture and Education, all activities that happen without any need for the federal government. (Education is a local function, and the department spending $100 billion a year hasn’t raised test scores one bit.)

Shrink the military by reducing our overseas commitments. Reform Social Security by raising the retirement age. And instead of increasing government involvement in health care, turn Medicare into a self-sustaining insurance program.

But to save America from bankruptcy, we don’t even need to make all those cuts. We could grow our way out of debt if Congress simply froze spending. They won’t do that either, but if they limited spending growth to 2 percent per year, we could balance the budget in just three years.

Limiting government growth is politically difficult, but if we don’t do it, America is doomed.

“Is Life One Big ‘Merry-Go-Round’? Ecclesiastes

I have written on the Book of Ecclesiastes and the subject of the meaning of our lives on several occasions on this blog. In this series on Ecclesiastes I hope to show how secular humanist man can not hope to find a lasting meaning to his life in a closed system without bringing God back into the picture. This is the same exact case with Solomon in the Book of Ecclesiastes. Three thousand years ago, Solomon took a look at life “under the sun” in his book of Ecclesiastes. Christian scholar Ravi Zacharias has noted, “The key to understanding the Book of Ecclesiastes is the term ‘under the sun.’ What that literally means is you lock God out of a closed system, and you are left with only this world of time plus chance plus matter.”

Let me show you some inescapable conclusions if you choose to live without God in the picture. Solomon came to these same conclusions when he looked at life “under the sun.”

  1. Death is the great equalizer (Eccl 3:20, “All go to the same place; all come from dust, and to dust all return.”)
  2. Chance and time have determined the past, and they will determine the future.  (Ecclesiastes 9:11-13)
  3. Power reigns in this life, and the scales are not balanced(Eccl 4:1)
  4. Nothing in life gives true satisfaction without God including knowledge (1:16-18), ladies and liquor (2:1-3, 8, 10, 11), and great building projects (2:4-6, 18-20).

You can only find a lasting meaning to your life by looking above the sun and bring God back into the picture.

Ecclesiastes 1:1-11

Is Life One Big ‘Merry-Go-Round’?

What would life be like if God had not revealed Himself to mankind, if Jesus Christ had never come to earth? Life would be one big merry-go-round of futility, despair, cynicism and sorrow! There are many today who are trying to live life without God–and even though all may appear fine on the surface for them, reality shows that their lives are ‘coming apart at the seams’. “Life is not what it is ‘cooked up to be”, is sometimes heard by these cynics. Many of these alienated people are saying, if not in actual words at least by their actions, “Futility of futilities, all is futile! Life is like chasing after the wind”! The utopian dreams of many modern- day secular philosophers have gone up in smoke, and talk of utopia has become now talk of oblivion! Listen to some of our modern-day philosophers:

“Brief and powerless is man’s life. On him all his race the slow, sure doom falls pitiless and dark. Blind to good and evil, reckless of destruction, omnipotent matter rolls on its relentless way.” (Bertrand Russell) “Current indications are that the world is bent on going to hell in a hand cart, and that is probably what it will do.” (Gordon Rattray Taylor) “You are the orphans in an age of no tomorrows.” (Joan Baez) “Today even the survival of humanity is a utopian hope.” (Norman O. Brown)

These words are modern-day commentary on the ancient book of Ecclesiastes. Ecclesiastes, perhaps the strangest book of the Bible, describes what life is like without belief in divine revelation. Not all, but most of the book of Ecclesiastes, describes the philosophy or viewpoints of the cynic, skeptic, and pessimist. ‘Futility of life without God’–this theme is ably carried out in the book of Ecclesiastes. A man who looks at life without the eyes of faith is likely to come to many of the same conclusions as the writer of this book.

The only relief we get in our heavy spirits as we listen to the pessimistic conclusions regarding life which the author describes, is the occasional flash of faith which he occasionally affirms in God whose inscrutable purposes will eventually prevail in spite of the inexplicable mysteries of life which he observes!

Have you ever travelled on a mountain road that was broad, beautiful and surrounded by evergreen trees, with the sparkling sunlight dancing all around you, but as you continued to travel, the road narrowed and became rocky, the sun became obscured from view as the clouds darkened and finally you came to the end of the mountain trail? The road, you discovered, was a dead-end road. All you could do was to turn around and go back from where you began!

“O God (if there is a God!), I have travelled many roads in life, most of which appeared to be broad, beautiful and full of pleasure, but the longer I have travelled these roads, the narrower they have become; and the less enjoyable they are. I have discovered by experience that these roads are dead-end roads! If there is an open-ended road which leads to increasing happiness and meaning, lead me to that road!”

AFFIRMATION FOR THE DAY: Amidst all the dead-end roads of life, there surely must be one road which, while it may appear narrow at first, increasingly becomes broad, expansive, more beautiful and full of purpose and destiny!

Will Higher Tax Rates Balance the Budget?

As the U.S. debt and deficit grows, some politicians and economist have called for higher tax rates in order to balance the budget. The question becomes: when the government raises taxes, does it actually collect a larger portion of the US economy?

Professor Antony Davies examines 50 years of economic data and finds that regardless of tax rates, the percentage of GDP that the government collects has remained relatively constant. In other words, no matter how high government sets tax rates, the government gets about the same portion. According to Davies, if we’re concerned about balancing the budget, we should worry less about raising tax revenue and more about growing the economy. The recipe for growth? Lower tax rates and a simplified tax code.

Michele Bachmann’s pro-life views were influenced by the works of Francis Schaeffer!!!!

A 2011 article from Life News noted:

Bachmann cites Christian writer Francis Schaeffer as an influence on her pro-life views.

In a campaign stop to speak to local residents at a church in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Bachmann shared her testimony and talked about the Christian faith she and her husband share. That faith, which has matured thanks to the writings of Schaeffer, has led Bachman to a pro-life view that has seen her compile a 100% pro-life voting record in Congress and adopt dozens of foster children.

“One thing that Dr. Schaeffer said is that [God is] not just the God of theology. He’s not just the God of the Bible,” Bachmann said, according to the Des Moines Register. “Since he is the Creator God, he’s the father of biology, sociology, of political science, of you name the subject. … And that altered our way of thinking, that God had something to say about our career.”

“Francis Schaeffer also said that life is the watershed issue of our time, and how we come down on how we view human life will impact all other issues,” she said. “And so Marcus and I decided we didn’t want to be pro-life only, just as speaking… We wanted to live a life of being about pro-life.”

The Register indicates Bachmann told the audience that, upon the encouragement to put her pro-life views into action, she and her husband began counseling and praying with single mothers and helping them get to pregnancy and adoption centers to provide further practical support instead of abortion.

“This is not to condemn any woman who here has ever had an abortion or participated in one,” she said, according to the newspaper. “Because God is there also with grace and mercy in that situation, but to say that he is the life-giving only God who has answers in the midst of our trying times.”

Dave Andrusko, of the National Right to Life Committee, says he is not surprised Schaeffer helped shaped Bachmann’s faith and pro-life views.

“There are a couple of reasons it’s useful to talk about Congresswoman Bachmann’s talk—her testimony. Like almost all the GOP candidates current running, and most of the few who may still jump in, she is staunchly pro-life,” he says. “Schaeffer is perhaps best known to pro-life veterans for co-authoring with Dr. C. Everett Koop (later Surgeon General) the hugely influential “Whatever Happened to the Human Race?” Both as a book and a video series, the impact of “Whatever Happened to the Human Race” cannot be exaggerated. It awakened and mobilized Evangelical Protestants as nothing before had ever done.”

He called the Bachmanns “loving pro-lifers” who have expressed their Christian faith and pro-life views “through the hands and feet” of action.

This Halloween, millions of Americans will, as every year, be handing out candy. But this year, the real trick could be finding treats made in the U.S.A. Because of government cronyism aimed at protecting big sugar producers, much of the candy in your child’s bag will come from overseas.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, in 2012, the price of raw sugar was 40 percent higher in the United States than in the rest of the world. And, while an international sugar glut is expected to send prices tumbling everywhere else later this year, U.S. prices will remain about the same. That’s because of a U.S. government program that guarantees sugar processors a minimum price.

That program costs American taxpayers about $1.4 billion each year, while directly benefitting fewer than 5,000 beet and sugar cane farmers. Most of them, like most big farmers, are fairly well off to begin with. Meanwhile, the U.S. Commerce Department’s International Trade Administration says that U.S. consumers pay an extra $826,000 for each sugar-production job saved.

According to the U.S. International Trade Commission (yes, there is an International Trade Administration and an International Trade Commission), the sugar program imposes a $49 million net cost on the economy. That’s enough to buy 8.8 million five-pound bags of sugar. A study commissioned by the Sweetener Users Association sets the direct price even higher: between $2.9 billion to $3.5 billion per year.

The sugar program costs jobs as well.

The Hershey chocolate company has cut 1,500 jobs. Atkinson Candy Co. now makes 80 percent of its peppermint-flavored products at a factory in Guatemala that opened in 2010.

According to a 2006 U.S. Department of Commerce report, the U.S. has lost more than 10,000 candy-making jobs since 1997. The report adds that three candy-making jobs are lost for each sugar-growing and processing job saved by higher domestic sugar prices. “As long as the government has the ability to hand out favors to some industries and punish others, resources will be diverted away from productive private-sector activities to fund lobbying campaigns in Washington, D.C.,” notes Heritage’s Bryan Riley. “This Depression-era program, which was supposed to end in 1940, has outlived its intended lifespan by 72 years. It should be abolished.”

I wrote of series of four posts on the conversion to Christ of Brian Walsh of the heavy metal band Korn and that was because my son Hunter told me about Walsh’s Christian testimony. Then I stumbled on the Christian testimony of Reggie “Fieldy” Arvizu of Korn. This subject has always interested me and I have written about Lou Graham of Foreigner, and Kerry Livgren and Dave Hope and their similar experiences. In all of these cases they convert to Christianity and give their lives totally to Christ and then they are delivered from drugs.

CBN.com – Tim Branson [reporting]: His name is Reggie Arvizu, but most people know him as “Fieldy”, bass player for the multi-platinum rock band Korn.

Reggie “Fieldy” Arvizu: A lot of it was women. One night stands to groupies and all of that. I became really mean, and I was triggered easy to become violent. I could kill people.

Branson [reporting]: I recently talked with Fieldy about his rock’n’roll lifestyle and some of the more difficult choices he’s made in his life, including his decision to follow Christ and stay with the band.

Branson: You started drinking at a very early age.  How did that happen?

Fieldy: I was probably 5 or 6. My parents would tuck me into bed, and my mom’d be like, “I love you,” and my dad would be like, “Dream about Budweisers.” That’s what he knew.

Branson:  And that kind of set you up, didn’t it?

Fieldy: Had my big Budweiser pillows in my room. I was destined to be a partier, I guess.

Branson: So your parents both were partying all the time. How did that affect your family?

Fieldy:  It starts out, they start drinking and partying. Towards the end of the night, it was always the same thing.  There would be dishes flying, screaming, yelling to violence to abuse.  It’s like they loved each other, [but] that’s what happens.

Branson:  Alcohol and drugs has a way of doing that.

Fieldy: Yep, brings out that other side.

Branson [reporting]: When Fieldy’s parents divorced,  that other side blew up. He was heartbroken.  So he did what any teenager might do to block the pain — he shut down.

Fieldy: I was like, this is not going to hurt me.  That’s what I told my dad. “I’m moving in with you. Let’s get a keg, and let’s throw a party and make music,” and I put a wall up to not feel the emotions. That’s when it became full-on drinking and a way that nobody’s going to hurt me. From that moment on, I never had a sober day.

Branson [reporting]: Fieldy formed the band Pierced with some high school friends.  He started using speed.

Fieldy: When we were in these younger bands, they were like hair metal bands, you know?  The whole image was to be really skinny, like a Q-Tip, big hair, little stick body, tight pants and all. If you take these speed pills right here, you won’t be hungry. So I started getting into that.   I went to jail a few time, but looking back I should have been in jail like every day. I just didn’t get caught.

Branson [reporting]: Pierced fell apart, as did other bands that followed. Then, in 1993, Fieldy and friends came up with a new name, Korn. With a new sound and a new lead singer, the band took off and so did Fieldy’s party life.

Fieldy: I had my nights of being in hotel rooms and destroying them by myself, crying because I’d wake up in the morning feeling so bad from partying. I’d be shaking. I’d wake up and throw up in the morning. I’m like, “Man, I can’t handle this.”  So I would just take some Xanax or Adavan and let that kick in and I’d just be wasted again.  It’d bring you so down, then [I would] smoke weed after that.  Then night would come, and I could start drinking.

Branson: The goal was basically to stay buzzed.

Fieldy: All day.

Branson [reporting]: Korn was huge, playing in sold-out arenas around the world.  In the midst of it all, Fieldy married and divorced twice.

Branson: You had a very specific view about women.  How did you see women in your life?

Fieldy: I would bash on them, say women are just sluts, no good. I was really mean to women to where I could make almost any woman cry, any time. I guess that’s what I did to keep from getting hurt.

Branson [reporting]: Fieldy was still dealing with the pain of his parents’ divorce.

Branson: You spent a lot of time and effort building up walls around your heart.

Fieldy: That was a full-time job for like 20 years.  One heartbreak, 20 years. I mean, most people I think get over a heartbreak in a like a year.  But 20 years destroying myself?  It’s a vicious cycle.  You’re living inside a tornado spinning. It’s fast, and it ends up killing you.

Branson:  Did you ever come to a point and say this has gotta stop?

Fieldy: I don’t think I did.  I always made a joke out of everything. If my hands are shaking and I’m throwing up, I’d make a joke. “Hey, everybody watch this.”

Branson [reporting]: It was no joke when Fieldy’s father was diagnosed with cancer.

Fieldy: To me, my dad was kind of like a superhero. There’s no way this could happen. Even to the point where he got sick and [I] had to move him over to the top doctors in the world, I’m like, “They’re going to fix it. I got money. They’re going to fix it.  I got the best insurance in the world.  He’s gonna be fine.”

Branson [reporting]: But he wasn’t.  His father died with one last wish.

Fieldy: He wished that I’d be saved.

Branson [reporting]: That’s because years earlier Fieldy’s father had become a Christian and so had his wife.  So, when she asked Fieldy to pray the salvation prayer at the hospital, he did.

Fieldy: I just did it, because everyone was freaking out.  It didn’t mean much. I was so out of my mind at the moment. I came back to the house, and that’s when I went through a deep dark moment. I just started thinking about everything — from what I’m doing to myself to his death to what I’m leaving behind. I don’t know.  I couldn’t take it anymore.

Branson [reporting]: That led Fieldy to a sincere prayer of commitment that changed his life.

Fieldy: I had chills throughout my whole body, almost like a coldness.  I was crying. I tell a lot of people that you can do the prayer with your brain, but that’s not going to do anything.  You have to do it with your heart. When I accepted Christ, now I’m like, “Okay, I’m going to pray for some of these things that I’m a slave to.” It went in steps. So that I was set free with no withdrawals. No craving. I stopped everything down to weed to the pills.  I just stopped.

Branson [reporting]: Over time he became more aware of his need for God’s forgiveness.

Fieldy: I’d walk into the bathroom, put my face on the floor and just say, “Forgive me, man,” because some of the things I did were so bad. I just knew He said, “I forgive you, son.”

Branson [reporting]: Fieldy spent a year apologizing to everyone he could think of that he’d hurt.   The hardest person to apologize to was his girlfriend at the time, Dena.

Fieldy: I was going to be heartbroken if she left me. I was like, I’ve really got to take a chance here of her leaving me after I tell her I’ve been cheating on her. I took the chance.

Branson [reporting]: Dena was furious, but she forgave him. The two married and started a family.  As far as his career, he’s still with Korn.  I asked him about his decision to stay with the band.  He believes it’s for a good reason.

Fieldy: There’s just so much power of being used in Korn.  I can reach so many people and know what I’m about, not what Korn’s about. I want to try to follow the Bible the best I can, because I know it’s going to give me the best life.

Branson [reporting]: Now that he’s “got the life” and has written a book about it. He says his message is really pretty simple.

Fieldy: People think, “I’m not good enough to have the Lord come into my life.” People have got to know all you’ve got to do is know what Jesus did for you. He died for your sins,  died on the cross and came back three days later. If you ask Him into your heart, it’s for life.  He’s going to be with you forever.
