In 1980 I read the book FREE TO CHOOSE by Milton Friedman and it really enlightened me a tremendous amount.  I suggest checking out these episodes and transcripts of Milton Friedman’s film series FREE TO CHOOSE: “The Failure of Socialism” and “What is wrong with our schools?”  and “Created Equal”  and  From Cradle to Grave, and – Power of the Market. In this episode “The Tyranny of Controls” Milton Friedman shows how government planning and detailed control of economic activity lessens productive innovation and consumer choice.

In this first episode Milton Friedman asserts, “Adam Smith’s flash of genius was to see how prices that emerged in the market, the prices of goods, the wages of labor, the cost of transport, could coordinate the activities of millions of independent people, strangers to one another, without anybody telling them what to do. His key idea was that self-interest could produce an orderly society benefiting everybody. It was as though there were an invisible hand at work. The invisible hand is a phrase that was introduced by Adam Smith in his great book, The Wealth of Nations, in which he talked about the way in which individuals, who intended only to pursue their own interests, were led by an invisible hand to promote the public welfare which was no part of their intention. Last week in this film series the distinguished economist Milton Friedman took us to Hong Kong to see a free market system in which he had a great deal of confidence and faith. This week he takes us traveling again to India, Japan and to Europe to see what happens in his view when governments think they can plan and control the economic activities of their peoples.

FREE TO CHOOSE: Tyranny of Control

Friedman: It is harvest time and Japanese farmers gather their crops for the rice market in Kyoto. Of course, they will try to get as much for it as possible and the buyer’s will try to buy it as cheaply as possible. That is how markets are supposed to work. That is what Adam Smith, the Scotsman who turned economics into a modern science, observed 200 years ago. He observed something else too.

Adam Smith: In every country it is always and must be in the interest of the great body of people to buy whatever they want of those who set it cheapest. The proposition is so very manifest that it seems ridiculous to take any pains to prove it. Nor could it ever have been called in question had not the interested sophistry of merchants and manufacturers, confounded common sense of mankind. Their interest is, in this respect, directly opposite to that of the great body of people.

His key idea was that self-interest could produce an orderly society benefiting everybody. It was as though there were an invisible hand at work.

The invisible hand is a phrase that was introduced by Adam Smith in his great book, The Wealth of Nations, in which he talked about the way in which individuals, who intended only to pursue their own interests, were led by an invisible hand to promote the public welfare which was no part of their intention. He was talking about the economic market. About the market in which people buy and sell. He was pointing out that in order for a butcher or a baker or a candlestick maker to make an income, he had to produce something that somebody wanted to buy. Therefore, in the process of promoting his own interests and looking to his own profit, he ended up serving the interests of his customers.

When Adam Smith published The Wealth Of Nations, Britain was still a largely rural and placid place. But the Industrial Revolution was already getting started and standards of life were beginning to rise. One obstacle was that trade with other nations was still tightly controlled. Merchants in the home market had persuaded the government of the day to impose heavy duties and taxes on all foreign imports in order to insure themselves a protected market.

One of the results was to turn Britain into a nation of lawbreakers. Smuggling was a national past time: brandy, wines, tobacco, anything with a heavy customs duty on it. For years, the revenue men fought a losing battle along the shores and inlets of the British Isles.

In 1846, after years of argument and partial success, the followers of Adam Smith finally persuaded the British Parliament to remove all duties on goods imported from abroad. Britain embarked on complete free trade, giving a further push to the rising standard of life.

What happened in Britain as a consequence of releasing the tremendous force of self-interest, had the unintended effect of benefiting millions of people all over the world, and by 1851 the evidence was proudly on show at the great Crystal Palace Exhibition.

Free trade enabled Britain to become the work place of the world. But was it all an accident? I don’t think it was. Consider what happened in 1868 on the other side of the world in Japan. For the preceding 300 years, the Japanese had lived in almost complete isolation. They had discouraged visitors from other nations, especially from the West. The result was that by the standards of the West, Japan was backward. It was a feudal society with lords and serfs and woe betide anyone who tried to change the order of things. Women were third class citizens.

In 1868, a new generation of rulers decided that the time had come for Japan to make contact with the outside world. And with the arrival of the first foreign traders from the West, things began to change. The Japanese followed the British trading pattern because Britain was a leading nation of the world. So free trade came to Japan. Japan became a magnet for other people’s ideas and developments.

One of the first traditional industries to feel the effects was weaving. From Europe, the Japanese imported the jacquard method __ a way of programming a loom to control the accuracy of the weave, and so the standardized output. Workers did well in the new atmosphere and so did their employers. The adoption of mass production techniques meant that workers were able to move out of the traditional industries and into the new industries, which all added to the trade boom. None of us can help being effected by the intellectual atmosphere that we breathe. In the middle of the 19th century, when Japan ended her self-imposed isolation and entered the modern age, it never occurred to her leaders to follow any other course than that of free enterprise and free markets. That was the intellectual atmosphere of the time, created by Britain’s success in applying the principles of Adam Smith.

In 1948, when India achieved independence, her leaders had all been trained in Great Britain. They had sat at the feet of Harold Laski and his associates at the London School of Economics, or of their counterparts at Oxford and Cambridge. It never occurred to them to follow any other course than that of central planning and government control. That was the intellectual atmosphere of the time. The intellectual seed took root. As it grew, it needed to be honored, even worshiped.

Every year on the anniversary of Gandhi’s birth, people all over India do just that __ in homage to the great Mahatma, they sit and spin using methods handed down through the centuries.

I love the works of Francis Schaeffer and I have been on the internet reading several blogs that talk about Schaeffer’s work and the work below by Bruce Little  was really helpful. Schaeffer’s film series “How should we then live?  Wikipedia notes, “According to Schaeffer, How Should We Then Live traces Western history from Ancient Rome until the time of writing (1976) along three lines: the philosophic, scientific, and religious.[3] He also makes extensive references to art and architecture as a means of showing how these movements reflected changing patterns of thought through time. Francis Schaeffer: A Mind and Heart for God

On January 30, 2012, had Francis A. Schaeffer still been living he would have celebrated his 100th birthday. In recognition of this fact a number of Christian organizations have been paying tribute Schaeffer as one of the great evangelical Christian thinkers of the 20th Century. One of those is the Center for Faith and Culture at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, of which I am director.

There is a growing consensus among older evangelicals that Schaeffer must not be forgotten. So, efforts such as this are important as today many under the age of 40 have little awareness of Schaeffer’s impact on the evangelical world. It has been most encouraging to see the 100th anniversary of his life used as an opportunity to reacquaint the evangelical world with the life and ministry of Francis Schaeffer. Happily, there are a good number of evangelical notables who remember and understand the importance of Schaeffer’s legacy, not only as something to be remembered, but to be followed.
Schaeffer was a Christian theologian, philosopher and Presbyterian pastor (maybe a pastor first and foremost) who spent most of his adult life in Switzerland with his wife Edith and their four children. His insightful mind disturbed the evangelical conscience with his penetrating analysis of culture. In the 1960s he taught evangelicals to take seriously the questions brought to the surface by the anti-authority cultural revolution.

One of his major contributions was that he taught Christians the importance of worldview thinking both in living the Christian life and evangelizing the lost. I believe a strong case can be made that Schaeffer’s thinking, passion, and ministry are still able to inform present-day evangelicals on engaging culture and defending the Faith.

In 1948 Schaeffer moved to Switzerland to begin a children’s ministry (Children for Christ) in worn-torn Europe under the Independent Board of Presbyterian Foreign Missions. In time, however, his ministry developed beyond a children’s ministry to university students. Eventually, the Schaeffer’s purchased a chalet in Huemoz where eventually the ministry known as L’Abri (Fr. Shelter) was birthed 1955 (the story of the L’Abri ministry can be found in Edith Schaeffer’s wonderful book, The Tapestry). Truly it was a shelter for many who were thrown into intellectual and spiritual chaos by the anti-establishment forces of the 1960s encouraged by existentialism. In 1960, Time magazine took note of Schaeffer’s ministry in the Swiss mountains and referred to it as a unique ministry to the European intellectual.

Over the years, hundreds (probably thousands) of people came (some for days others for months) to L’Abri where many found Christ as Savior. This was especially true in the 60s and 70s and those of us who lived through those times remember the political and social upheaval as students on both sides of the Atlantic went into a rebellious mode full throttle. Many in evangelicalism merely condemned the senseless destruction (of course, in one sense it needed to be condemned) and ignored the legitimate questions being asked by the students.

Schaeffer, on the other hand, listened carefully to their questions and helped them to see how historic Christianity answered those questions consistently within the reality all lived. While it was a time of entrenchment for many in evangelicalism, Schaeffer engaged the young people and the intellectuals (many were existentialists) on their own terms. He showed them that their explanation of the world was inconsistent with and insufficient for the world in which they lived. Then he would show how Christianity answered those questions.

A hallmark of Schaeffer’s apologetic was that it was driven by a deep and abiding love for humanity. He truly empathized with those who were struggling with life in a world that was terribly out of joint. I am told that Schaeffer would spend hours with one person asking questions until the individual had sufficient information to think further on the matter.

To understand Schaeffer’s approach to evangelism and his apologetic thought one must give attention to the three works that reveal the foundation of his understanding of man, reality, and the Bible. These three books serve as the foundation for all his other books, forming a trilogy: The God Who Is There, Escape from Reason, and He Is There and He Is Not Silent. According to Schaeffer all his other books fit into these as “spokes of the wheel into the hub”. In 1982, the works of Francis Schaeffer were edited by Schaeffer and published in a five-volume set in which the books in the trilogy are in the order in which they were written. This order reveals the development of his thinking apologetically and is essential to understanding Schaeffer and his apologetic method.

In these three books, one learns how Schaeffer’s view of man shaped his apologetic approach (which for him was part and parcel of his evangelism). Historic Christianity, according to Schaeffer, was creation centered and central to creation was that God created man in his image. The first apologetic implication of creation was that man had intrinsic worth which meant he was to be treated with respect and love. This truth shaped Schaeffer’s life and ministry as he was motivated and directed by love and compassion for man as a person. Apologetics, he urged, must be “shaped on the basis of love for the person as a person.”

While Schaeffer did not minimize the historic fall recorded in Genesis, he argued that the fall “did not lead to machineness, but to fallen-manness.” There was a greatness to man even though he could also be very cruel. He spoke of man being noble, not because of his achievements, but because of who he was as a creation of God—man was not a zero, to use Schaeffer’s words. Only Christianity, Schaeffer said, could explain both the greatness and the cruelty of man. This truth moved Schaeffer to take all men seriously and to answer the honest questions of fallen man. Furthermore, he argued that the Christian must take care to understand the person by looking carefully at cultural artifacts (especially the arts) to understand the underlying worldviews and presuppositions revealed in them.

The second apologetic implication of creation for Schaeffer was the intelligibility of creation. The categories of the mind of man correspond to the structure of the world as God had created both. The result, Schaeffer argued, was that common ground existed between the Christian and the non-Christian. This is not something man put upon the universe; it is simply the way it is. Man lives in a morally structured, rational universe and no matter how he might try to live against the way the universe is, Schaeffer was sure it would push back at him and create tension for his non-Christian presuppositions. Of course this was not a game for Schaeffer and he urged the Christian always to give the answer as understood in light of historic Christianity and to do so in a loving and compassionate tone.

He was convinced that when speaking to the non-Christian the first truth to present was that of the truth of the real world and the reality of man himself. For Schaeffer, the real point of contact with the modern (and post modern mind) was reality. Regardless what presuppositions a man claims as grounds for his worldview, Schaeffer showed how they can be tested for truthfulness when pressed against the reality in which every person must live.

In 1978 Schaeffer learned that he had lymphoma cancer succumbing to it in May 1984. However, almost until his death he maintained an active speaking schedule. During his life time he carried on a voluminous correspondence with many of the great evangelical minds of the day. Most of this correspondence is in the Francis A. Schaeffer Collection (of which I am director) given by the Francis Schaeffer Foundation which is now under the custodianship of the library at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary.

He wrote 27 books (and many pamphlets), and produced two films with his son Frank. Of the two films, the most well-known is How Should We then Live? which is a companion to the book by the same title. The second film, Whatever Happened to the Human Race with Everett Koop, Schaeffer shows the social and philosophical consequences of abortion. He wrote on responsible stewardship of creation long before others were talking about it. Schaeffer not only could think with the best minds of his day, he lived out his Christianity in very practical ways and urged all in the church to do the same.

The concluding thought is that Schaeffer remains an important apologetic resource for Christians in the 21st century. It goes without saying that the evangelical world owes much to the life and ministry of Francis Schaeffer. Every now and then, God gives His Church a unique voice for His people—Schaeffer was such a voice. It is without fear of contradiction to say that Schaeffer was one of the evangelical giants of the latter half of the 20th century. We will do well to listen, for to do otherwise will deny that which was intended for our profit.

Dr. Conrade Yap on Ecclesiastes (Quotes Steve Miller)

I have written on the Book of Ecclesiastes and the subject of the meaning of our lives on several occasions on this blog. In this series on Ecclesiastes I hope to show how secular humanist man can not hope to find a lasting meaning to his life in a closed system without bringing God back into the picture. This is the same exact case with Solomon in the Book of Ecclesiastes. Three thousand years ago, Solomon took a look at life “under the sun” in his book of Ecclesiastes. Christian scholar Ravi Zacharias has noted, “The key to understanding the Book of Ecclesiastes is the term ‘under the sun.’ What that literally means is you lock God out of a closed system, and you are left with only this world of time plus chance plus matter.”

Let me show you some inescapable conclusions if you choose to live without God in the picture. Solomon came to these same conclusions when he looked at life “under the sun.”

  1. Death is the great equalizer (Eccl 3:20, “All go to the same place; all come from dust, and to dust all return.”)
  2. Chance and time have determined the past, and they will determine the future.  (Ecclesiastes 9:11-13)
  3. Power reigns in this life, and the scales are not balanced(Eccl 4:1)
  4. Nothing in life gives true satisfaction without God including knowledge (1:16-18), ladies and liquor (2:1-3, 8, 10, 11), and great building projects (2:4-6, 18-20).

You can only find a lasting meaning to your life by looking above the sun and bring God back into the picture.

“Everything is Meaningless.” Is it?

This coming Sunday, my Church will begin a series of sermons on the book of Ecclesiastes. After swimming through the books of Titus and Philemon, we are swinging back to the Old Testament for wisdom. Lasting about 10-12 weeks, we will be going through the entire book, covering all 12 chapters. The general theme of the sermon series will be: “The Search For Meaning.” Along the way we will deal with issues of life, noticing the cyclical rhythms of the world we live in, of human philosophy, the follies of riches and pleasures, the limits of human wisdom, the futility of living in a rat race, and many heart gripping issues surrounding meaning, or the lack of it. There will be several guest speakers, with me of course at the helm preaching about once every fortnight. Let me begin this meditation on Ecclesiastes 1, most famously remembered for its recurring proclamation in verse 2:

“‘Meaningless! Meaningless!’ says the Teacher. ‘Utterly meaningless! Everything is meaningless.” (Eccl 1:2)

Is this statement of meaninglessness factual, or emotional? Is it only meaningless for the Teacher, or is it a statement of truth for the rest of us? Let me begin by sharing an interesting exchange between Ravi Zacharias and a man who attended his talk.

Man: “Everything is meaningless!”
Ravi: “Everything is meaningful.”

Man: “Everything is meaningless!”
Ravi: “Everything is meaningful.”

Man: “Everything is meaningless!”
Ravi: “Everything is meaningful.”

This went on for a while until the man got a little peeved.  In reply, Ravi gently explained:

“Let me tell you why. If everything is meaningless like you have said, then what you have said in the first place is meaningless. You have effectively said nothing!”

How true. If everything in itself is devoid of meaning, then the very words that we speak is meaningless. One common understanding of Ecclesiastes is that everything without God is meaningless. I hold that view. Yet, that does not mean that we can easily dismiss everything secular or anything that does not mention God at all. God has created this world as it is.

How To Read Ecclesiastes

It is because everything is meaningful, we have a reason to study Ecclesiastes. I like to suggest three keys to adopt when reading this book. Firstly, there is meaning in this world even without mentioning God. This does not mean that I disagree with the Teacher in Ecclesiastes. The difference with God is that meaning becomes more complete, more beautiful, and more significant in the light of God. Without God, there is meaning but incomplete, and unsatisfactory. In going through the philosophical arguments and complaints about the world, it is also important to recognize the person making such observations. The writer is able to complain because he is in search of something MORE meaningful than what he has. His cry of meaninglessness stems from the frustrations of a search that is without God. Just like the prodigal son who seeks to enjoy the world away from his family. After squandering away his inheritance, he realizes that life is more then sheer pleasure and materialism. Relationships form his core need and purpose of existence.

Secondly, as we read Ecclesiastes, remember that it is embedded in a genre of wisdom literature. There are important lessons for all of us to learn. In the Old Testament, Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and the Song of Songs are part of the Wisdom books called the ketuvim in Hebrew.

Job deals with the issues of pain, suffering, justice, and God’s sovereignty. Psalms contain many hymns, songs that describe faith and trust in God through the ups and downs of life. Proverbs give us great advice on how to live an honourable life of integrity with lots of practical applications for living.  The song of songs is a joyful declaration and singing of the wonders and splendours of married life, an a relationship between couples in love. Ecclesiastes augment these wisdom literature with a journey through searching for meaning in all the wrong places, only to learn that only in God, will our search be redeemed.


Thirdly, Ecclesiastes remind us how finite we are, how imperfect are our human efforts, and the futility of any kinds of search for meaning devoid of God. Do not be too quick to jump to the conclusion in chapter 12. Be intentional in going through the first eleven chapters to explore honestly how we all feel inside our heads and our hearts.

Here is the rough outline for the next few weeks. Note that they are subject to change.

Stephen Miller calls the Book of Ecclesiastes as a tussle of “Smartest Man vs Toughest Question.” We may not be the smartest man on earth, but we can all participate in the search for answers to life’s toughest questions. May we have a meaningful ride as we join in the search through Ecclesiastes.

Why Brian Welch Walked Away

CBN.com – On a peaceful Arizona afternoon, Brian Welch and his daughter Jeanea share a mutual love for music. But just a couple of years ago, Brian would have given anything for just a few minutes of peace.

“I want to be here for Jeanea,” Brian says. “She lost her mom to drugs. I need your help. ‘Help me, help me God.’ I said it from my heart.”

Brian, known around the world to his friends and fans as “Head,” made it big – multi–platinum big – as co-founder and lead guitarist of the band Korn.

“The second record came out, number three on the billboard chart. What’s up with that! We’re some heavy band,” Brian says. “We go to the third album…the album starts going 100,000 copies a week, we start selling. We kept climbing; we kept selling records, more videos, more fame, huge shows.”

The band’s unique sound, called nu-metal, is a mixture of heavy metal and alternative rock, and it catapulted these five friends from Bakersfield, California, into super stardom. And while most of the world saw Brian the rock star, the man who had it all, Brian tells a different story of how he was dying inside and attempted to kill the pain with drugs and alcohol.

“I’d go back on the road, starting drinking. ‘OK, guys let’s party.’ Sweeping the pain under the rug,” Brian says.

While it didn’t seem to affect his music, it had a devastating effect on his marriage.

“I’d go home and me and my ex-wife would do drugs and fight,” he says.

Brian tried several times to quit the drugs, but he felt powerless to fight them. Then, the arrival of his daughter Jeanea changed everything. Brian and his wife, Rebekah, went on the straight and narrow – at least for awhile.

“And that was like the best thing, I said, ‘Life is going to be good. Life is going to be good. I’ve got my band. I’ve got my wife. I’ve got my baby.’ We’re still climbing up and then I go back on tour. I got clean when she was born, and I go back on tour. Open a beer for the first show, instantly hooked again. Rebekah starts doing ‘speed’ at home with the baby and I’m still climbing success. And home is just terrible. Rebekah is missing. I’m missing my baby so bad. When I come home, I’m so drunk or hung over. Then, I spend a couple of days with my kid. I bump into someone who does speed. I do speed at home with my kid and it just gets worse at home as the success grows,” Brian says.

Then, his wife left him and Jeanea, and they eventually divorced.

“I panicked. My rock star dream, my money, nothing, none of my power, none of my gangster friends could stop that trauma from happening,” he says.

Brian won custody of Jeanea. And here began that tug of war in his heart. He wanted to care for his daughter, but hated exposing her to the wild party life of Korn.

“How can you leave a huge band that’s like one of the biggest bands that’s come around, rock bands, that changed music, how can you leave that?,” Brian asks. “But how can I not be there for my daughter?”

As Brian agonized over this decision, he dove deeper and deeper into drugs and alcohol. One day, he heard his daughter singing a Korn song.

“I heard Jeanea singing a Korn song called “Adidas.”  It means all day long I dream about sex. It’s a party song. And I felt like a loser. I’m no good for this kid,” Brian says.

During that time, Brian went into real estate with two partners who happened to be Christians. They never troubled Brian with their faith. But, at one point they reached out to him through an e-mail. Brian had mentioned to his partners how his life was falling apart. Their reply — “Come to me, all you who are weary and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28)

Brian began to question, “‘Could Jesus be real?’ I was thinking in my mind, was this guy not just a goody, goody? Could there really be a God, and is He calling me? I looked up that scripture and I wanted it to be true.”

Eventually, Brian went to church with them.

“So we went to the service. And the music came on and all these people went up to the front and started praying. And I was like, that is just weird. But I was drawn, I felt something going on,” Brian says.  “He said, ‘Does anybody want to accept Christ?’ And I did it for myself. I said the prayer and went home rolled up a hundred dollar bill, laid out a big line of ‘speed’, snorted it. And I said…I remember perfectly. I was clear…I said, ‘Lord, If you’re real like that guy says, please take these drugs from me. I can’t quit, I don’t want to do them, but I can’t stop. I want to be here for Jeanea. She lost her mom to drugs. I need your help, Just help me. Help, help me God.’ I said it from my heart.”

Brian snorted “speed” and read the Bible for a week, searching for the answers. Then one day…

“I felt this peaceful presence and I started shaking a little bit and I got goose bumps everywhere. And the first thing I felt was ‘I love you.’ And I was like, ‘Father?’ I was frozen. ‘Father?’ This was God and then it went away. But, it was so real. It took over the high. And when it went away the drugs said, ‘That’s just drugs. That’s not real.’ So I did drugs all night long. And the next day I woke up and I had the feeling to go to my Bible. I opened it up and pointed, the soul who sins is the soul who dies. And to me, right then, it was like God told me I revealed myself to you last night. It’s time for you to stop the drugs. It’s time for you to be done. And I was consumed with fear and I went and grabbed all my drugs and threw them in the toilet and I said, ‘I’m done God. I’m yours now. I’m yours.’ That’s the last time I did drugs.

According to Brian, the fact that he could become clean after being in drugs for so many years was a miracle.

At the same time, in 2005, Brian split from Korn and sent the heavy metal world into a spin. On the other hand, Brian was baptized in the Jordan River and started his new journey.

“To tell you the truth, God was real,” Brian says. “He revealed himself to me, kept revealing Himself to me, and I felt his presence at my house. He’s speaking to my kid and all this crazy stuff is happening, and that’s all that mattered to me. I was OK. This band stuff, the stardom, I mean everything, it doesn’t matter anymore. It’s God. He’s so real. I don’t care what I do the rest of my life.”

Brian has taken his responsibility as a father head on. Instead of lewd lyrics, Jeanea hears her dad talk about the love of God.

Brian’s music career also has taken on a new direction. His music now reflects his journey from self–destruction into the loving arms of God.

“He put me on Earth to have fellowship and intimacy with Him,” Brian says. “And I’m going to spend as much time I can possibly spend getting to know him everyday. I don’t want to waste any time. I’ve wasted enough time. That’s what I’m put on Earth to do. Be intimate with God. Get to know Him as much as I can. Let Him fill me with His spirit so He can do the work by bringing people into the Kingdom.”

Flyleaf is an American hard rock band, formed in the Belton[1] and Temple, Texas[2] regions in 2002. The band has charted on mainstream rock, Christian pop and Christian metal genres. They performed around the United States in 2003 until releasing their eponymous debut album, Flyleaf, in 2005. The album went platinum after selling more than one million copies.[6] The band won an online poll on yahoo.com and was named Yahoo!’s Who’s Next band of the month in March 2006 and they were named MTV’s artist of the week on December 24, 2007.[7][8] Flyleaf released their second album Memento Mori on November 10, 2009 which debuted and peaked at No. 8 on the Billboard charts.

Flyleaf’s third album New Horizons was revealed in October 30, 2012. At the same time, lead singer Lacey Sturm announced her departure and the band announced the new lead singer for the band, Kristen May.

Band history

Early on Lacey Sturm started playing with James Culpepper. Guitarists Jared Hartmann and Sameer Bhattacharya were later recruited. “Sameer and Jared are really experimental with melodies and pedals, and we all had different influences that were all blending together with the same passionate and hopeful heart, and that brought out this beautiful feeling. It was magical,” said Sturm.[9] Bassist Pat Seals joined after leaving his previous band The Grove.

As Passerby, the band released three EPs and played over 100 shows in Texas alone over the span of two years under the booking and promotion company Runt Entertainment.[citation needed] In 2004, Passerby played a showcase for RCA Records in New York City in hopes of getting signed. RCA passed on the band, but the president of Octone Records was very interested. They waited for two days in their van at a truck stop for a phone call about an Octone showcase. They were signed after the showcase, and on January 7, 2004, Octone Record’s website announced their arrival to the label.

In March 2004, Flyleaf traveled to Seattle, Washington to record an EP with Rick Parashar. Afterwards, they toured with Skillet, Breaking Benjamin, Staind and 3 Doors Down to promote their self-titled EP. Due to legal reasons, they renamed themselves Flyleaf in June 2004.[10] In October, the EP was released to stores (as Flyleaf), spawning their first official single and video for the EP version of “Breathe Today”.

Debut album (2005–08)

In 2005, the band recorded their first full-length album with Howard Benson. On October 4, 2005, the record was released under the title Flyleaf. Appearances on the album include Dave Navarro of Jane’s Addiction and Ryan White of Resident Hero. The first mainstream single from their debut album was “I’m So Sick“, “Fully Alive” was the second, “All Around Me” was the third, and “Sorrow” was the fourth.

In the summer of 2006, the band played on the mainstage of the Family Values Tour 2006 and in late 2006, Flyleaf toured with Disturbed, Stone Sour and Nonpoint on the Music As A Weapon III Tour. The band issued an exclusive EP, which was sold at the tour called Music As A Weapon EP which features an acoustic version of “Fully Alive”, and three previously unreleased tracks: “Much Like Falling”, “Justice And Mercy”, and “Christmas Song” (Much Like Falling and Justice and Mercy later appeared on Much Like Falling EP). A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the EP went to World Vision.[11]

In 2007 Flyleaf toured with Three Days Grace and throughout Australia with the Soundwave festival, and also toured Europe with Stone Sour and Forever Never. In the spring of 2007, Flyleaf headlined their Justice & Mercy Tour which first featured Skillet and Dropping Daylight. Later on they did a second leg of the tour which featured Sick Puppies, Kill Hannah and Resident Hero. Flyleaf again joined the Family Values Tour in 2007.[12] The music video for “I’m So Sick” appeared briefly in the 2007 film Live Free or Die Hard. Also a remix of the song “I’m So Sick” is on the Soundtrack to the movie Resident Evil: Extinction. “Perfect” was also released as a single in late 2007 to Christian radio stations. Released on November 5, 2007, the The Sims 2 expansion pack Teen Style Stuff featured the band’s song “Cassie” recorded in Simlish.

Flyleaf also released a song entitled “Tina” which was the first song that they debuted in the release of Guitar Hero 3 as part of the Companion Disk Set. Also, the song “I’m So Sick” appears in Rock Band. On October 30, Flyleaf also released a digital EP titled Much Like Falling EP. The songs included on this EP were “Much Like Falling”, an acoustic version of “Supernatural”, the limited release song “Tina”, and The EP is available on iTunes along with the expanded edition of their debut album. On April 26, 2008, the band released their fourth video “Sorrow” from their debut album on MTV2.[13] The band toured with Seether in late spring, but had to cancel five shows due to a problem with Sturm’s voice. The members of Flyleaf took the fall off to write new music, hoping to begin recording by January.

Flyleaf also contributed a cover of the song, “What’s This?” from The Nightmare Before Christmas soundtrack for its cover album, Nightmare Revisited.

Memento Mori (2009–2010)

When the band finished recording their second album, The band had selected 14 songs out of the 30 already written. Some of these songs, such as “Again“, “Have We Lost”, and “Beautiful Bride” have been performed live. The band reunited with producer Howard Benson and enlisted the mixing services of Chris Lord-Alge[14] It was released on November 10, 2009.[15] The album has been titled Memento Mori. It features songs such as “Beautiful Bride”, “Arise”, “Missing”, “Again” and “Set Apart This Dream” which was inspired by the Christian book Wild at Heart.[16] Flyleaf has debuted an additional two songs live during a small acoustic tour the band did in Afghanistan for United States Armed Forces called “Chasm” and “Circle”.[17] As they published on their MySpace page, Flyleaf’s first single “Again” was released on iTunes and also played on the radio. Meiert Avis directed the single’s music video titled “Again”.

The group, starting in Seattle, Washington on September 28, 2009, held VIP listening parties throughout the country inviting fans to be the first to hear a selection of songs from the new record and view brand new music videos before they aired nationwide. By partnering with Eventful, fans were given the opportunity to demand that their city get routed into the “Road to Memento Mori” using Eventful’s “Demand It!” service.

Based on overwhelming demand there were over 10 events. Fans saw Sturm, Sameer Bhattacharya, and Jared Hartmann, who made special appearances at these intimate gatherings across the country.[18]

On November 2, 2009, the band released a short Webisode for their new album.[19]

Flyleaf’s other video, “Beautiful Bride,” was shot in early August 2009 by director Don Tyler. The video was originally released at the Memento Mori listening events, but was later featured on Yahoo! the day Memento Mori came out. The video features James’ sister/Sameer’s wife, April, as the bride and Joshua Sturm, Lacey’s husband, as the groom. Like “Again,” this video features Pat’s artwork throughout the video. Future singles are set to include “Chasm” for rock stations and “Missing” for alternative.

Flyleaf toured throughout the United States with Breaking Benjamin and Three Days Grace that lasted from January to March 2010. They embarked on a headlining tour called the “Unite & Fight Tour” with 10 Years and Fair to Midland. The tour began on April 28, 2010 and ended on June 6, 2010. June 11, 2010 the group has acted on MUZ TV Award 2010(Премия МУЗ-ТВ) in Russia with songs: “I’m So Sick”, “Again” and a song: “All Around Me“. They are one of many bands that performed at Download Festival on June 12, 2010. The band encouraged fans to donate to stop human trafficking in other countries.

The band was scheduled to continue with the second leg of the “Unite & Fight” tour from September 10, 2010 to October 23, 2010, with Story of the Year, and performed at various festivals through the end of the year. They also released an animated music video for “Chasm” on September 22, which was directed/animated/illustrated by Giles Timms. At the end of the Unite and Fight tour in early November, Lacey collaborated with band Apocalyptica on the song “Broken Pieces”, as well as with Australian singer Orianthi in her new song “Courage”.[20] Soon after they released “Arise” as the next single from Memento Mori.

On November 6, 2010, the band performed at Rock the Hood, a festival at Fort Hood in memory of all the soldiers who have died, especially the 13 who died at the November 2009 shooting.

On November 15, 2010, Lacey publicly shared her pregnancy with the fans. Lacey said via Facebook that she and her husband Joshua would be expecting a baby boy in early 2011.[21]

On December 7, 2010, Flyleaf released an EP titled Remember to Live, then released a cover of the John Mark McMillan song “How He Loves” on December 21, 2010.[22][23]

New Horizons and change in vocalists (2011–2013)

On January 22, 2011, Hartmann announced that he and Culpepper were building a recording studio and preparing to record demos for their next album.[24] In February 2011, the band started pre-production for their next album at Treelady Studios in Pittsburgh, PA.[25][unreliable source?]

On June 1, 2012, the band confirmed via Twitter that the album and first single will be called New Horizons.[26] The single premiered on South East Michigan’s 89X Radio on August 1, 2012,[27] and released through iTunes on August 21, 2012.[28]

On September 4, 2012, Lacey Sturm’s birthday,[citation needed] Flyleaf released the official video for “New Horizons” on Fuse. The video included a picture in the background as a tribute to Rich Caldwell and footage of Lacey and Joshua Sturm’s son, Joshua “Jack” Sturm.[29]

Flyleaf also released an additional single, entitled “Call You Out”, on September 25, 2012.[citation needed] The album was released on October 30, 2012.[30]

On October 22, 2012, the band announced that Lacey Sturm was stepping down as the band’s lead vocalist. In a statement written by Pat Seals, Kristen May, formerly of Vedera, was announced as Sturm’s replacement. Sturm expressed that with the birth of her son, Jack, and the death of one of the band’s lead audio engineers, Rich Caldwell, that she knew the true meaning of “Memento Mori” (the title of their second full-length album).[31]

Guitarist Sameer Bhattacharya stated in an interview that they will write new music with their new lead vocalist Kristen May.[32]

Who We Are EP (2013–present)

Flyleaf released a new single on June 18, 2013 with May on vocals, “Something Better” featuring P.O.D. front man Sonny Sandoval. A new EP, Who We Are, was released on July 9, 2013.[33]

Genre

The band’s style has been identified as alternative metal,[34] hard rock,[35][32] heavy metal,[34] nu metal,[36] post-grunge,[4] alternative rock,[37] post-hardcore[38] and “emo–metal“.[39] Because of the many religious references in Flyleaf’s music, they are also considered as Christian rock and Christian metal band.[40][41]

Christian faith

All members of the band are Christians.[citation needed] Their faith influences their music, but former lead singer Sturm doesn’t believe that necessarily makes Flyleaf strictly a Christian band. The band says they are Christians who play in a rock band, and their faith is heard within their music.[42] “We all share the same faith.”[this quote needs a citation] In 2005 Flyleaf performed a free concert at Los Angeles Pierce College for a Christian group at the college, which was a three-day event.[citation needed]

In a May 2010 interview, original lead singer Sturm was asked how it felt to be in a Christian rock band and play in Las Vegas:

Well, you know what? I don’t know what you mean by a “Christian rock band.” It’s hard to say that because people all have a different definition of what that means. If it means that we’re Christians, then yeah, we’re Christians, but if a plumber’s a Christian, does that make him a “Christian plumber?” I mean we’re not playing for Christians. We’re just playing honestly and that’s going to come out.[43]

New lead singer May has felt the band’s fans believe she’s “not Christian enough” despite professing to be a Christian. She also hopes that people don’t discount the band by using the “Christian” label.[44]

Dear Mr. President,

I know that you receive 20,000 letters a day and that you actually read 10 of them every day. I really do respect you for trying to get a pulse on what is going on out here. Mr. President why do we allow abortion today in the USA? Let me tell you why by quoting Dr. C. Everett Koop and Francis Schaeffer:

For a while, Western culture — from sheer inertia — continued to live by the old Christian ethics while increasingly embracing the mechanistic, time-plus-chance view of people. People came more and more to hold that the universe is intrinsically and originally impersonal — as a stone is impersonal. Thus, by chance, life began on the earth and then, through long, long periods of time, by chance, life became more complex, until man with his special brain came into existence. By “chance” is meant that there was no reason for these things to occur; they just happened that way. No matter how loftily it is phrased, this view drastically reduces our view of self-worth as well as our estimation of the worth of others, for we are viewing ourselves as mere accidents of the universe…..because the Christian consensus has been put aside, we are faced today with a flood of personal cruelty. As we have noted, the Christian consensus gave great freedoms without leading to chaos — because society in general functioned within the values given in the Bible, especially the unique value of human life. Now that humanism has taken over, the former freedoms run riot, and individuals, acting on what they are taught, increasingly practice their cruelties without restraint. And why shouldn’t they? If the modern humanistic view of man is correct and man is only a product of chance in a universe that has no ultimate values, why should an individual refrain from being cruel to another person, if that person seems to be standing in his or her way?

On 2-25-13 we lost a great man when we lost Dr. C. Everett Koop. I have written over and over the last few years quoting Dr. C. Everett Koop and his good friend Francis Schaeffer. They both came together for the first time in 1973 when Dr. Koop operated on Schaeffer’s daughter and as a result they became close friends. That led to their involvement together in the book and film series “WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE HUMAN RACE?” in 1979.

Here are some quotes from that great book and film series that Schaeffer and Koop took part in:

The thinkables of the eighties and nineties will certainly include things which most people today find unthinkable and immoral, even unimaginable and too extreme to suggest. Yet — since they do not have some overriding principle that takes them beyond relativistic thinking — when these become thinkable and acceptable in the eighties and nineties, most people will not even remember that they were unthinkable in the seventies. They will slide into each new thinkable without a jolt.

In our time, humanism has replaced Christianity as the consensus of the west. This has had many results, not the least of which is to change people’s view of themselves and their attitudes toward other human beings. Here is how the change came about. Having rejected God, humanistic scientists, philosophers and professors began to teach that only what can be mathematically measured is real and that all reality is like a machine. Man is only one part of the larger cosmic machine. Man is more complicated than the machines people make, but is still a machine, nevertheless.

The Bible teaches that man is made in the image of God and therefore is unique. Remove that teaching, as humanism has done on both sides of the Iron Curtain, and there is no adequate basis for treating people well.

…because the Christian consensus has been put aside, we are faced today with a flood of personal cruelty. Modern humanism has an inherent need to manipulate and tinker with the natural processes, including human nature [through genetics], because humanism:

1. Rejects the doctrine of Creation.
2. Therefore rejects the idea that there is anything stable or “given” about human nature.
3. Sees human nature as part of a long, unfolding process of development in which everything is changing.
4. Casts around for some solution to the problem of despair that this determinist-evolutionist vision induces.
5. Can only find a solution in the activity of the human will, which — in opposition to its own system — it hopes can transcend the inexorable flow of nature and act upon nature.
6. Therefore encourages manipulation of nature, including tinkering with people, as the only way of escaping from nature’s bondage. But this manipulation cannot have any certain criteria to guide it because, with God abolished, the only remaining criterion is nature (which is precisely what humanist man wants to escape from) and nature is both noncruel and cruel.

With nothing higher than human opinion upon which to base judgments and with ethics equaling no ethics, the justification for seeing crime and cruelty as disturbing is destroyed. The very word crime and even the word cruelty lose meaning. There is no final reason on which to forbid anything — “If nothing is forbidden, then anything is possible.”

If man is not made in the image of God, nothing then stands in the way of inhumanity. There is no good reason why mankind should be perceived as special. Human life is cheapened. We can see this in many of the major issues being debated in our society today: abortion, infanticide, euthanasia, the increase of child abuse and violence of all kinds, pornography (and its particular kinds of violence as evidenced in sadomasochism), the routine torture of political prisoners in many parts of the world, the crime explosion, and the random violence which surrounds us.

In the film series “WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE HUMAN RACE?” the arguments are presented  against abortion (Episode 1),  infanticide (Episode 2),   euthenasia (Episode 3), and then there is a discussion of the Christian versus Humanist worldview concerning the issue of “the basis for human dignity” in Episode 4 and then in the last episode a close look at the truth claims of the Bible.

In this 1979 film series they dealt with the big social issues and predicted what social problems we have in the future because of humanism. For instance, they knew that the Jack Kevorkians of the world would be coming down the pike. They predicted that there was a slippery slope from abortion to infanticide to youth euthanasia brought on by the materialistic worldview.

Americans Want Solutions, Not Procrastination on Debt, Budget

Nearly two-thirds of Americans polled by Bloomberg answered that “it is right to require spending cuts when the debt ceiling is raised…because Congress lacks discipline on spending.” Their voices were not heard by Congress as it signed its terms of surrender.

In the final hours before October 17—the alleged day of reckoning when the Treasury Department said it would run out of borrowing authority using its extraordinary measures—Congress hashed together another short-term fix. The so-called deal fixes nothing but continues the damaging status quo of out-of-control spending and increasing amounts of debt.

Instead of making meaningful and deliberate changes to how the government spends and accumulates debt, the bill allowed lawmakers to procrastinate on fixing the national spending and debt crisis. It lifts the debt limit until February 7 and funds the government at the fiscal year 2013 sequester level until January 15—putting off necessary reforms and ensuring that Washington repeats the “Groundhog Day” cycle in a mere couple of months.

Echoing Heritage’s concerns about the manner in which the debt ceiling was lifted—by suspension with no dollar limit enforcing fiscal restraint—John Crudele of the New York Post emphasizes why spending vigilance is especially important in the coming months:

Let’s say there’s a bar full of drunken sailors. Someone says he’s going to cap the drinking—not after a certain level of drinking, but only at a certain time. Say 11 p.m.

With no set limit, the sailors are likely to drink as much as they want until closing time.

Without a debt limit, Washington is going to spend and borrow as much as it possibly can before the bar closes on Feb. 7.

The deal sets up another inevitable confrontation in early January, as lawmakers are already gearing up for an attempt to increase discretionary spending—the one-third of the budget Congress must actively authorize. In doing so, Congress fails to convince its frustrated constituents that lawmakers are capable of exercising fiscal discipline, eschewing their responsibility to effectively manage the federal budget.

Even worse, two-thirds of federal spending grows on autopilot with no regular congressional review. After net interest costs, entitlements are the largest and fastest growing element of government spending and debt, and as such, any path to balancing the budget must reform the biggest spending programs—Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security. Many of these reforms have bipartisan support. Congress only needs to act on them.

Furthermore, Congress should better prioritize taxpayer dollars by eliminating inappropriate non-defense discretionary spending programs while ensuring full funding for national defense, the federal government’s core constitutional function.

This time, Congress chose to take the easy way out and yet again neglect an opportunity to make meaningful decisions about ravenous spending and the country’s ballooning obligations. Americans understand that procrastination means putting off until tomorrow what you can do today. They expect solutions—not procrastination—from their elected officials.

STEVE JOBS ON THE ISSUE OF DEATH

Steve Jobs noted:

Steve Jobs was a Buddhist and it is my view that this is almost the same as being an atheist. In this clip above he discusses the issue of death. There is one book in the Bible that confronts the view of death and the issue of atheism more than any other book.

Three thousand years ago, Solomon took a look at life “under the sun” in his book of Ecclesiastes. Christian scholar Ravi Zacharias has noted, “The key to understanding the Book of Ecclesiastes is the term ‘under the sun.’ What that literally means is you lock God out of a closed system, and you are left with only this world of time plus chance plus matter.”

Let me show you some inescapable conclusions if you choose to live without God in the picture. Solomon came to these same conclusions when he looked at life “under the sun.”

  1. Death is the great equalizer (Eccl 3:20, “All go to the same place; all come from dust, and to dust all return.”)
  2. Chance and time have determined the past, and they will determine the future.  (Ecclesiastes 9:11-13 “I have seen something else under the sun:  The race is not to the swift
    or the battle to the strong, nor does food come to the wise
    or wealth to the brilliant  or favor to the learned; but time and chance happen to them all.  Moreover, no one knows when their hour will come: As fish are caught in a cruel net,
    or birds are taken in a snare, so people are trapped by evil times  that fall unexpectedly upon them.”)
  3. Power reigns in this life, and the scales are not balanced(Eccl 4:1; “Again I looked and saw all the oppression that was taking place under the sun: I saw the tears of the oppressed—
    and they have no comforter; power was on the side of their oppressors—  and they have no comforter.” 7:15 “In this meaningless life of mine I have seen both of these: the righteous perishing in their righteousness,  and the wicked living long in their wickedness. ).
  4. Nothing in life gives true satisfaction without God including knowledge (1:16-18), ladies and liquor (2:1-3, 8, 10, 11), and great building projects (2:4-6, 18-20).

Power reigns in this life and the scales are not balanced.

Solomon comes to the realization that powers reigns in this life and the scales are not balanced. Solomon notes, “Again, I observed all the oppression that takes place under the sun. I saw the tears of the oppressed, with no one to comfort them. The oppressors have great power, and their victims are helpless. (Ecclesiastes 4:1).

WOODY ALLEN

People that believe there is no afterlife must concede that Hitler will never face the due punishment for his acts. I am a big Woody Allen movie fan and no other movie better demonstrates Ecclesiastes 4:1 better than the movie CRIMES AND MISDEMEANORS because the character Judah was able to get away with murder and in the end of the movie does not fear that God will punish him. 

If you do not have God in the picture then you must come to the same conclusions that Solomon came to and Woody Allen shows that very clearly in his film.

By the way, the final chapter of Ecclesiastes finishes with Solomon emphasizing that serving God is the only proper response of man. Solomon looks above the sun and brings God back into the picture.  I am hoping that Woody Allen will also come to that same conclusion that Solomon came to concerning the meaning of life and man’s proper place in the universe in Ecclesiastes 12:13-14:
13 Now all has been heard;
here is the conclusion of the matter:
Fear God and keep his commandments,
for this is the whole duty of man.

14 For God will bring every deed into judgment,
including every hidden thing,
whether it is good or evil

Another chapter in Ecclesiastes takes on the issue of death head on.

1-3Well, I took all this in and thought it through, inside and out. Here’s what I understood: The good, the wise, and all that they do are in God’s hands—but, day by day, whether it’s love or hate they’re dealing with, they don’t know.

Anything’s possible. It’s one fate for everybody—righteous and wicked, good people, bad people, the nice and the nasty, worshipers and non-worshipers, committed and uncommitted. I find this outrageous—the worst thing about living on this earth—that everyone’s lumped together in one fate. Is it any wonder that so many people are obsessed with evil? Is it any wonder that people go crazy right and left? Life leads to death. That’s it.

Seize Life!

4-6 Still, anyone selected out for life has hope, for, as they say, “A living dog is better than a dead lion.” The living at least know something, even if it’s only that they’re going to die. But the dead know nothing and get nothing. They’re a minus that no one remembers. Their loves, their hates, yes, even their dreams, are long gone. There’s not a trace of them left in the affairs of this earth.

7-10 Seize life! Eat bread with gusto,
Drink wine with a robust heart.
Oh yes—God takes pleasure in your pleasure!

In 1978 I heard the song “Dust in the Wind” by Kansas when it rose to #6 on the charts. That song told me thatKerry Livgren the writer of that song and a member of Kansas had come to the same conclusion that Solomon had. I remember mentioning to my friends at church that we may soon see some members of Kansas become Christians because their search for the meaning of life had obviously come up empty even though they had risen from being an unknown band to the top of the music business and had all the wealth and fame that came with that. Furthermore, like Solomon and Coldplay, they realized death comes to everyone and “there must be something more.”

Livgren wrote:

“All we do, crumbles to the ground though we refuse to see, Dust in the Wind, All we are is dust in the wind, Don’t hang on, Nothing lasts forever but the Earth and Sky, It slips away, And all your money won’t another minute buy.”

Both Kerry Livgren and Dave Hope of Kansas became Christians eventually. Kerry Livgren first tried Eastern Religions and Dave Hope had to come out of a heavy drug addiction. I was shocked and elated to see their personal testimony on The 700 Club in 1981 and that same  interview can be seen on youtube today. Livgren lives in Topeka, Kansas today where he teaches “Diggers,” a Sunday school class at Topeka Bible Church. Hope is the head of Worship, Evangelism and Outreach at Immanuel Anglican Church in Destin, Florida.

Coldplay’s song “42” states, “Time is so short and I’m sure, There must be something more.” Yet in the song “Lost,” notes, “Every river that I tried to cross, Every door I ever tried was locked.” Blaise Pascal, the famous mathematician and philosopher once proclaimed, “There is a God shaped vacuum in the heart of every man which cannot be filled by any created thing, but only by God, the Creator, made known through Jesus.”

Coldplay’s latest musical lyrics indicate a Spiritual Search for the Afterlife

In Coldplay’s latest songs you can see that something has changed about the focus of the band’s song writing. What is going on? The internet has been full of speculation concerning the radical lyrical change in the latest Coldplay work compared to the previous 3 albums.

The Spiritual Search for the Afterlife

Many of Coldplay’s latest songs mention God and other Biblical themes such as dealing with death, and the afterlife and the shortness of life.  It seems to me that Coldplay has focused on spiritual issues in their lyrics but they are still in the process of working out all the answers and still formulating their religious belief systems. Here is a sample of their latest works:

In the song “Glass of Water”:

Oh he said you could see a future,
inside a glass of water,
With riddles and the rhymes
He asked ‘Will I see heaven in mine’
Ooooh, oooh, ooooh …

Possibly searching for the path to Heaven or hoping after death heaven is the destination. It reminds me also of the song “42” that says, “You thought you might be a ghost, You didn’t get to heaven but you made it close.”

The Search for the Meaning of Life

In the song “Now my feet  won’t touch the ground”:

Now my head won’t stop
You wait a lifetime to be found

Could it be a way of saying that God is searching for you in a sense? In the context of the rest of the album that may not be such a bad interpretation.

The song “42” states,

Those who are dead are not dead
They’re just living my head
And since I fell for that spell
I am living there as well…

Time is so short and I’m sure
There must be something more

This is the same question that Solomon asked 3000 years ago in the Book of Ecclesiastes.  He knew there was something more even though he was living the life of a very rich powerful King of Israel. The Christian Philosopher Francis Schaeffer noted that Solomon took a look in Ecclesiastes at the meaning of life on the basis of human life standing alone between birth and death “under the sun.” This phrase UNDER THE SUN appears over and over in Ecclesiastes. The Christian Scholar Ravi Zacharias noted, “The key to understanding the Book of Ecclesiastes is the term UNDER THE SUN — What that literally means is you lock God out of a closed system and you are left with only this world of Time plus Chance plus matter.”

Solomon had all the resources in the world and he found himself searching for meaning of life and trying to come up with answers concerning the afterlife. However, it seems every door he tries to open is locked. Solomon found  riches (Ecclesiastes 2:8-11), pleasure (2:1), education (2:3) and his work (2:4) all meaningless and “a chasing of the wind.” None of those were able to “fill the God-sized vacuum in his heart” (quote from famous mathematician and philosopher Blaise Pascal). That reminds me of the Coldplay’s words in the song “Lost”: “Every river that I tried to cross, Every door I ever tried was locked.”

Moreover, what looms over Solomon’s search for the meaning of life is his upcoming death. In the song, “The Escapist,” which shares tract 10 with the song  “Death and all his Friends,” Coldplay notes:

And in the end
We lie awake
And we dream
We’ll make an escape

Is this an escape from Death? The song states “In the End.” Does that mean the very end of our life?  Since this song follows the song “Death and All his Friends,” it seems that would be the case.

Death and the time cycle

Over and over in Coldplay’s latest music you see the theme of death and the time cycle brought up concerning the shortness of a person’s life. Earlier I quoted the song “42” that states “Life is so short” and in the song “Life in Technicolor II” (Prospekt March) : “Time came a creeping, Oh and time’s a loaded gun.”  Even more than this do you see death mentioned. The song “42” which I quoted earlier said, “Those who are dead” and the song “Poppyfields” (from Prospekt March) states, “People burying their dead” and later says, “I don’t wanna die on my own in a separate sky.” The song “Violet Hill” states, “When I’m dead and hit the ground.” Needless to say I do not even have to mention that other songs like “Death and All his Friends”and “Cemeteries of London” also deal with death.

Life experiences shaped Coldplay’s latest lyrics

Where did all this talk about death come from? Chris Martin said in an interview shortly after the release of the album Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends that the title came from the band’s life experiences which included some losses of life of close family members. Solomon rightly noted, (in Ecclesiastes 7:2-4) “It is better to spend your time at funerals than at festivals. For you are going to die, and you should think about it while there is still time.  Sorrow is better than laughter; it may sadden your face, but it sharpens your understanding. A wise person thinks a lot about death, while a fool thinks only about having a good time.”

Furthermore, Solomon had to grapple with the fact of his own upcoming death. “I also thought about the human condition—how God proves to people that they are like animals. For people and animals share the same fate—both breathe and both must die. So people have no real advantage over the animals. How meaningless!  Both go to the same place—they came from dust and they return to dust.  For who can prove that the human spirit goes up and the spirit of animals goes down into the earth?” (Ecclesiastes 3:18-21).

The Two Conclusions of those who Deny Afterlife

In 1978 I heard the song “Dust in the Wind” by Kansas.  That song told me that Kerry Livgren the writer of that song and a member of Kansas had come to the conclusion that life  without God in the picture was like dust in the wind which was exactly what Solomon said in Ecclesiastes when he talked about life “under the sun.”  In fact, in the verses I just listed (3:18-21) Solomon says we are all returning to the dust and there is no reason to think we are going any where else with God out of the picture. Take a look at what Kerry Livgren wrote back in 1978:

Dust in the wind
All we are is dust in the wind

Don’t hang on

However, Kerry Livgren’s God-given conscience told him that God did exist and he eventually found Christ after first trying some Eastern Religions. I remember telling my friends in 1978 when “Dust in the Wind” was the number 6 song in the USA that Kansas had written a philosophical song that came to the same conclusion about humanistic man as Solomon did so long ago and I predicted that some members of that band would come to know the Christ of the Bible in a personal way. This last part indicates to me that Coldplay realizes that evil individuals will be judged in an afterlife. This is a direct result of our God-given conscience that tells us that there is an afterlife and God will bring evil kings into judgement.

God reveals Himself in two Ways

Through the Created World and God-given Conscience

 

Lets take a look at the lyrics from the song “Cemeteries of London:”

God is in the houses
And God is in my head
And all the cemeteries of London
I see God come in my garden
But I don’t know what He said
For my heart, it wasn’t open
Not open

In the Bible Romans chapter one clearly points out that God has revealed Himself through both the created world around us  and also in a God-given conscience that testifies to each person that God exists.
Notice in this song that the song writer notes, “I see God come in my garden” and “God is in my head.” These are the exact two places mentioned by the scripture.  Romans 1:18-20 (Amplified version)

18For God’s [holy] wrath and indignation are revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who in their wickedness repress and hinder the truth and make it inoperative.

19For that which is known about God is evident to them and made plain in their inner consciousness, because God [Himself] has shown it to them.

20For ever since the creation of the world His invisible nature and attributes, that is, His eternal power and divinity, have been made intelligible and clearly discernible in and through the things that have been made (His handiworks). So [men] are without excuse [altogether without any defense or justification].

I have shown what thought processes Solomon went through in Ecclesiastes and then compared them to the evident changes that are occurring with Coldplay. By the way, the final chapter of Ecclesiastes finishes with Solomon emphasizing that serving God is the only proper response of man. My prediction: I am hoping that Coldplay’s next album will also come to that same conclusion that Solomon came to concerning the meaning of life and man’s proper place in the universe in Ecclesiastes 12:13-14:

Suggestions to Anyone Seeking the Christ of the Bible

1. You may not have as much resources as Coldplay or Solomon but you can still start on a spiritual search for the afterlife. .

 A.  Go to the Grand Canyon and see if you can deny the outward witness of God’s handiwork that Romans 1 talks about and then we move to the God-given conscience that God gave all of us.  That leads me to the scripture in Ecclesiastes 3:11, “…{God} has planted eternity in the human heart…” Just as the song Cemeteries of London mentions God revealing Himself in both of these places, so does the Bible. I contend that Coldplay’s radical lyrical change is because they are relying on their God-given conscience when they look at this difficult subject of death and life. The next suggestion I want to mention really centers on this verse Ecclesiastes 3:11 and if you actually believe in the afterlife.

B.   Rent a dvd of the movie CRIMES AND MISDEMEANORS by Woody Allen and see if you can answer this simple question: Do evil man like Hitler get off or will they be punished in an afterlife?

The 1989 movie Crimes and Misdemeanors by Woody Allen is  about a doctor who hires a killer to murder his mistress because she continually threatens to blow the whistle on his past questionable, probably illegal, business activities. Afterward he is haunted by guilt. His Jewish father had taught him that God sees all and will surely bring justice.

But the doctor’s crime is never discovered. Later in the film, Judah reflects on the conversation his father had with Judah’s unbelieving Aunt May at the dinner table many years ago:

“Come on Sol, open your eyes. Six million Jews burned to death by the Nazi’s, and they got away with it because might makes right,” says Aunt May.

Sol replies, “May, how did they get away with it?”

Judah asks, “If a man kills, then what?”

Sol responds to his son, “Then in one way or another he will be punished.”

Aunt May comments, “I say if he can do it and get away with it and he chooses not to be bothered by the ethics, then he is home free.”

Judah’s final conclusion was that might did make right. He observed that one day, because of this conclusion, he woke up and the cloud of guilt was gone. He was, as his aunt said, “home free.” The basic question Woody Allen is presenting to his own agnostic humanistic worldview is: IF YOU REALLY BELIEVE THERE IS NO GOD THERE TO PUNISH YOU IN AN AFTERLIFE, THEN WHY NOT MURDER IF YOU CAN GET AWAY WITH IT? Woody Allen has put up his own agnostic moral philosophy to the test and it has come up short. The secular humanist worldview that modern man has adopted does not work in the real world that God has created. Man knows inside himself through his inner consciencious (Romans 1:19) that God exists and will punish evil men like Hitler. You see that in the song Viva La Vida the evil king does not get into Heaven. It is true that Chris Martin grew up in a Christian home that believed in Heaven and Hell and Martin has since made statements indicating that he does not believe in Hell, but evidently at 3:45am in the morning when he wrote the song Viva La Vida he had to make sure that people knew that this evil king was going to be held accountable. This is a direct result of his God-given conscience.

Coldplay‘s Album about Life and Death wins Grammy
Unlike many the past grammy winners of “Best Rock Album,” Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends by Coldplay is filled with songs that deal with spiritual themes such as death, the meaning of life and searching for an afterlife.
Leadsinger Chris Martin notes, “…because we’ve had some people close to us we’ve lost, but some mirales — we’ve got kids. So, life has been very extreme recently, and so both death and life pop up quite often” (MTV News interview, June 9, 2008).

The subject of death is prominent in the songs in this album. “Poppyfields”: “People burying their dead…I don’t wanna die on my own…” “Violet Hill”: “When I’m dead and hit the ground.” Other songs on the album that mention death are “Death and All His Friends,” “42,” and the “Cemeteries of London.” Then the song “The Escapist” states, “And in the end, We lie awake and we dream, we’re makin our escape.” In the end we all die. Therefore, I assume this song is searching for an afterlife to escape to. The song “Glass of Water” sheds some more light on where we possibly escape to: “Oh he said you could see a future inside a glass of water, with riddles and the rhymes, He asked ‘Will I see heaven in mine?’
The song “42” that is clearing the most provocative song on the album. “Those who are dead are not dead, They’re just living in my head, Time is so short and I’m sure, There must be something more.”Solomon went to the extreme in his searching in the Book of Ecclesiastes for this “something more” that Coldplay is talking about, but he did not find any satisfaction in pleasure (2:1), education (2:3), work (2:4), wealth (2:8) or fame (2:9). “All Around Me” is song performed by American band Flyleaf from their self-titled debut album, Flyleaf (2005). It was released as the third single on April 2007. It is the band’s highest-charting and only single to chart on the Billboard Hot 100 and their most successful single to date.

Eventually, it became a mainstream and modern rock hit in the United States, crossing over to the pop charts, where it reached No. 40 on the Billboard Hot 100.[3] The song took a large leap into the top 40 channels, receiving more than 20 new stations in just a single day. The song was certified Platinum in the U.S. on January 22, 2010, selling over 1,000,000 copies.

Music video

The music video for the song was directed by Paul Fedor. In it, the band is dressed in white except lead singer Lacey Mosley, who is wearing a grey dress. The walls have red, yellow, blue, green, and black paint running down them and later in the video the paint is on the band.

The video debuted on Fuse TV’s Oven Fresh on June 25, 2007 and on Yahoo! Music on June 28, 2007.

Flyleaf has performed “All Around Me” on FUSE’s Daily Download and MTV.COM Live. It is usually played during their sets before “I’m So Sick“.[citation needed]

Charts

Beginning its run on the Mainstream Rock Chart, it peaked at No. 20 in August 2007, while reaching No. 6 on the Modern Rock chart in October 2007. In June 2008, it reached the top 40 on the Billboard Hot 100 and the top 20 on the Pop Songs.
