I have gone back and forth and back and forth with many liberals on the Arkansas Times Blog on many issues such as abortion, human rights, welfare, poverty, gun control  and issues dealing with popular culture. Here is another exchange I had with them a while back. My username at the Ark Times Blog is Saline Republican.

Somebody has to stand up to Planned Parenthood and their plans to get more government money!!!!

Lindsey Miller of the Arkansas Times Blog staff wrote on 3-6-13:

After the House voted today to override the governor’s veto…of the 12-week abortion ban, Sen. Jason Rapert celebrated by filing yet another bill aimed at curbing women’s access to care. It’s cookie-cutter legislation from Americans United for Life aimed at crippling Planned Parenthood. It would create a subchapter in Arkansas law called the “Defunding the Abortion Industry and Advancing Women’s Health Act of 2012”… that would prohibit any public money from going to any organization that directly or indirectly subsidizes an abortion provider.

The person using the username “OzarkTroutBum” posted on the Arkansas Times Blog on 3-6-13:

The Arkansas Tea-Taliban is wasting no time in taking us back in time.

The person using the username “arhogfan501” responded:

Yeah right! You’re a freaking idiot if you believe not one penny goes to fund or subsidize abortions.

The person using the username “baker” commented:

From the PPA latest 10/11 report seems they have assets of $1.2 billion and excess revenues of $87 million and received 45% of revenues from taxpayer funds so they’re not running short for their 97% “free and affordable access to breast exams, contraceptives and sexual education” services. That remaining 3% add up to 333,964 abortions for the year, a record number. Now they did make 2,300 adoption referrals but provided less than 30,000 prenatal services and some 40% of the “contraceptive services” were 1.4 million emergency contraception kits. This year all affiliates will begin pushing abortion services. PPA does not nor cannot provide mammograms, indeed no affiliate has the necessary license. PPA is an abortion provider and at some 900 plus killings a day rather prolific.

“War on Women”? Nice play on words by the media. More an attempt to cut costs. “Planned parenthood” is a waste of money… our money… tax payers money. A man pays for a condom, as it should be. A woman, who I consider a complete equal, is more than capable of taking responsibility of her own sex life, no different than a man. Apparently “equality” ends when it doesn’t suit. Now politicians attempting to correct a situation are made out to be evil doing hate mongers. It is a skewed society in which we live….To add to my last comment, I also add a man pays for all of his medical bills. We pay for prostate exams, as well as other personal medical conditions. It is up to both men and women to be responsible regarding sexual activity. It is not a requirement of the tax payer to cover the blatant disregard of responsibility of anyone! Being ignorant of the law has never been a valid excuse, nor has being drunk been a valid excuse for our mistakes. We take exception to this when it comes to sexual behavior while we certainly don’t give a tax break to the drunk driver, or the person “ignorant’ to any given law. Our society is removing accountability. It is as simple as that.

Diana Chandler of Baptist Press wrote:
Former U.S. Surgeon General C. Everett Koop, widely credited with energizing evangelicals against abortion, died peacefully Feb. 25 at his home in Hanover, N.H., at age 96….In the 1979 book “Whatever Happened to the Human Race?” Koop and the late Frances Schaeffer made a case for the importance of mankind’s intrinsic God-given value in the preservation of humanity.

“If man is not made in the image of God, nothing then stands in the way of inhumanity. There is no good reason why mankind should be perceived as special. Human life is cheapened,” the two wrote. “We can see this in many of the major issues being debated in our society today: abortion, infanticide, euthanasia, the increase of child abuse and violence of all kinds, pornography (and its particular kinds of violence as evidenced in sadomasochism), the routine torture of political prisoners in many parts of the world, the crime explosion, and the random violence which surrounds us.”

Koop and Schaeffer endeavored to “awaken the evangelical world — and anyone else who would listen — to the Christian imperative to do something to reverse the perilous realignment of American values on these life-and-death issues” including abortion and infanticide, Koop reflected in his 1991 autobiography, “Koop: The Memoirs of America’s Family Doctor.”

Southern Baptist ethicist Richard Land has written that “it is difficult to overestimate the incredible impact” Koop and Schaeffer had on evangelicals in the 20th century.

“Everyone devoted to the pro-life cause owes an incalculable debt of gratitude to Francis Schaeffer and to Dr. C. Everett Koop,” Land wrote for National Right to Life in 2003. “First Schaeffer, and then Dr. Koop, helped inform and energize a whole generation of evangelical Christians to engagement with a culture that had veered dangerously off course from its Judeo-Christian foundations. The pro-life movement owes them an enormous debt.”

C. Ben Mitchell, professor of moral philosophy at Union University in Jackson, Tenn., hailed Koop’s legacy.

“We have lost the nation’s doctor,” Mitchell told Baptist Press. “As a gifted physician and faithful Christian, he taught us how to heal both body and soul. As a public servant he helped us navigate some tumultuous waves, even causing a few of his own. As a protector of human dignity and the sanctity of human life he cared for the tiniest and most vulnerable among us.”

Before Dr. C. Everett Koop arrived in 1981 as Surgeon General could anybody ever name who the Surgeon General was? Koop also caused lots of editorial cartoons to be drawn about him because of his positions he took on health issues. This cartoon below sums up the issues he tackled.

In the film series “WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE HUMAN RACE?” the arguments are presented  against abortion (Episode 1),  infanticide (Episode 2),   euthenasia (Episode 3), and then there is a discussion of the Christian versus Humanist worldview concerning the issue of “the basis for human dignity” in Episode 4 and then in the last episode a close look at the truth claims of the Bible.

I truly believe that many of the problems we have today in the USA are due to the advancement of humanism in the last few decades in our society. Ronald Reagan appointed the evangelical Dr. C. Everett Koop to the position of Surgeon General in his administration. He partnered with Dr. Francis Schaeffer in making the video below. It is very valuable information for Christians to have.  Actually I have included a video below that includes comments from him on this subject.

Schaeffer’s works prepared him for the coming battle on abortion. He was truly a prophet that knew what was coming down the pike. In 1969 my former pastor Bill Elliff was a college student and someone told him about Francis Schaeffer speaking at Wheaton college in Chicago. He drove up  there and heard him speak. He spoke about abortion and assisted suicide and many of the social changes that would be happening in the next few decades. Schaeffer really did see where humanism would take our society and he was right.

The subject matter of Schaeffer’s speaking tours would eventually become the content of three important books, The God who is There, Escape from Reason, He is There and He is Not Silent, published in 1968, 1969, and 1972 respectively.  In these books Schaeffer sought to demonstrate, from a sweeping account of Western intellectual history, how the paradigm for the understanding of truth had changed dramatically over the last seven-hundred years and how Christianity, which requires an antithetical framework in order to maintain coherence, had become exceptionally difficult to communicate in the contemporary setting which did not believe in a unified answer to knowledge and life (Bryan Follis, Truth with Love: The Apologetics of Francis Schaeffer).

Schaeffer tackled this communication problem by not only making his readers aware of the epistemological shift, but also by encouraging them to consider how denial of Christian presuppositions leads to a denial of reality.  Christians not only need to understand where men and women had come from (in regards to the influence of Western thought upon their own presuppositions), but also how to “push [them] towards the logic of [their] own positions…” in order to help them see the inadequacy of their presuppositions (Schaeffer, Trilogy: The God who is There, 139).

As a result of his many talks at colleges and universities throughout the United States and the subsequent publishing his first two books, The God who is There and Escape from Reason, Schaeffer’s popularity steadily grew.  He would publish another book shortly after Escape from Reason entitled Death in the City, which called Christians to reclaim pure doctrine amidst growing liberalism and to renew their commitment to a biblical lifestyle.

Schaeffer expressed the concern that, as the culture drifted from absolutes maintained by a biblical world-view, people lost what it meant to be human and made in the image of God.  This devastating trend needed a strong counter, and Schaeffer argued the answer to this impending crisis would come from Christians as they demonstrated that the Christian life was meant to fulfill the entire person and return man to what he was always meant to be (Hankins, 112).  Materialistic philosophy—which denied the supernatural—led to meaninglessness and despair; Christianity rightly understood would lead to joy and purposeful living—to being fully human.

In 1970, Schaeffer began to expend efforts in applying Christian truth to other important but heretofore neglected areas.  In Pollution and the Death of Man, Schaeffer would argue for a Christian understanding of ecology.  Schaeffer would argue that pantheism, while attempting to save the natural environment, actually removed the grounds for human preservation and protection of the environment—if there is no difference between a man and a plant, then on what basis can we appeal to unique human responsibility?  He would also establish the truth that only a biblical world-view provides the framework within which to develop a proper environmentalism (Hankins, 119).  Nature, because it has its origin from God, has value in itself (Schaeffer, Pollution and the Death of Man, 48).

Thus, although Christians were to exercise dominion over the creation, they were also morally obligated to avoid exploitation of the creation—they are to “[exercise] dominion without being destructive:” trees should be plundered and animals should be killed for the purpose of providing shelter and food, not for mere sport (Schaeffer, Pollution, 72).  Proper care for the environment flowing from a Christian world-view would, Schaeffer believed, diminish current ecological problems.  Schaeffer would also voice what he perceived as a biblical position in the area of economics in his book, No Little People.

Throughout No Little People and throughout other writings related to the issue of economics, Schaeffer would admonish Christians to a “compassionate use of accumulated wealth” and exhort Christian employers to take less profit so their employees could make considerably more than the going wage rate (Hankins, 133).  Schaeffer believed the world would wake up and listen to the church as she spoke and lived counter to the treasured American principle of undisturbed personal peace and prosperity.  Another major work—one by which Schaeffer would become especially known—was his film, How Shall We Then Live.

In 1973, Schaeffer embarked on a filmmaking project that would trace the history of western thought, beginning with the Greeks and Romans, demonstrating that when a society drifts from presuppositions that provide a basis for transcendent morality (like Rome), that society eventually self-destructs.  Schaeffer would further argue that the church, through the middle ages, had been guilty of imbibing Greek and Roman ideas which eventually led to a distortion of biblical Christianity.  The Reformation, while not perfect, reclaimed much of biblical Christianity and had profound and positive affects on Western culture.  The Enlightenment, however, led to a strong affirmation of human autonomy and had devastating affects on human society.  According to Schaeffer, Hankins writes, “The message was clear: The Reformation, with its Christian base, leads to democracy; the Enlightenment, with its humanistic and secular base, leads to dictatorship and communism” (Hankins, 165-171; George Marsden, Fundamentalism and American Culture, 245).

How Shall We Then Live, which three years after the release of the film became a popular book, finally was a call to culture war.  Schaeffer held out two options to Christians: they could either compromise and accept the culture’s prevailing humanistic notions, or they could go to battle with the culture (Hankins, 175). The issue that pervaded this call to action was the volatile matter of abortion; this would lead Schaeffer personally into the fray alongside others in the pro-life movement.

Can You Vague That Up for Me?

As the IRS scandal thickens, targeted groups are coming out to describe their ordeals in dealing with that most-reviled of government agencies. The Ohio Liberty Coalition was one of the groups targeted by the IRS, and Tom Zawistowski of the OLC recently sat down with Cato’s Caleb Brown to discuss the experience.

The Ohio Liberty Coalition was among tea party groups that received special scrutiny from the I.R.S. Tom Zawistowski says his story is not unique. He argues the kinds of questions the I.R.S. asked his group amounts to little more than “opposition research.”

Among the many lessons we can take from this scandal is to realize how bureaucrats enforcing vague government regulations can chill free speech. Campaign finance law is filled with such vague regulations–such as whether an ad is the “functional equivalent of direct advocacy”–and they are anything but harmless to political speech.

In assessing applications for (c)(4) status, the IRS looked for whether political campaigning was an applicant’s “primary activity.” Due to the vagueness of this term, “rogue” IRS agents were free to harass applicants for the “content of their prayers” and other uncouth requests.

Campaign finance advocates often do not understand how political speech can be killed by a thousand cuts as much as it can by one fatal blow. Some FEC regulations clearly prohibit certain types of spending. Others tell would-be speakers to judge whether their ads “in context, can only be interpreted by a reasonable person as advocating a candidate’s election or defeat.” Complying with these regulations ultimately comes down to a silly “magic words” test–that is, a search for words such as “vote for,” “elect,” “support,” etc.

Some campaign finance advocates who understand what Citizens United was actually about–that is, a non-profit corporation prohibited from showing a movie critical of Hillary Clinton on Pay-Per-View–argue that Citizens United should have narrowly won the case. Rather than allowing all corporations to spend independently in elections, they argue, the Court should have carved out an exception for “genuine ideological organizations,” “voluntary media choices” (Pay-Per-View), or some other vague criterion that would ultimately have been enforced by bureaucrats at the FEC. We can now can see how such vague standards are applied and abused.

I have several spiritual heroes in my life and Francis Schaeffer was one of those. In the film series “WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE HUMAN RACE?” the arguments are presented  against abortion (Episode 1),  infanticide (Episode 2),   euthenasia (Episode 3), and then there is a discussion of the Christian versus Humanist worldview concerning the issue of “the basis for human dignity” in Episode 4 and then in the last episode a close look at the truth claims of the Bible.
Christians should present the truth in love and that is what Francis Schaeffer’s book “The Mark of the Christian” is about. I have a portion of that book below:
Christians have not always presented a pretty picture to the world.

Love in practice

Let me give two beautiful examples of such observable love. One happened among the Brethren groups in Germany immediately after World War II.

In order to control the church, Hitler commanded the union of all religious groups in Germany, drawing them together by law. The Brethren divided over this issue. Half accepted Hitler’s dictum and half refused. The ones who submitted, of course, had a much easier time, but gradually in this organizational oneness with the liberal groups their own doctrinal sharpness and spiritual life suffered. On the other hand, the group that stayed out remained spiritually virile, but there was hardly a family in which someone did not die in a German concentration camp.

Now can you imagine the emotional tension? The war is over, and these Christian brothers face each other again. They had the same doctrine, and they had previously worked together for more than a generation. Now what is going to happen? One man remembers that his father died in a concentration camp and knows that these people in the other group remained safe. But those on the other side have deep personal feelings as well.

Then gradually these brothers came to know that this situation just would not do. A time was appointed when the elders of the two groups could meet together in a certain quiet place. I asked the man who told me this, “What did you do?” He said, “Well, I’ll tell you what we did. We came together, and we set aside several days in which each man would search his own heart.” Here was a real difference; the emotions were deeply, deeply involved. “My father has gone to the concentration camp, my mother was dragged away.” These things are not just little pebbles on the beach; they reach into the deep wellsprings of human emotions. But these people understood the command of Christ about this, and for several days every man did nothing except search his own heart concerning his own failures and the commands of Christ. Then they met together.

I asked the man, “What happened then?”

And he said, “We just were one.”

To my mind, this is exactly what Jesus speaks about. The Father has sent the Son!

Many liberals actually truly do argue for abortion rights over human rights. Prochoice advocate Elizabeth Williams came out and said that on 1-23-13 in her article on Salon. We hear reasons for abortion such as poverty,and  child abuse,  but why not consider adoption? Instead, the political left will stop at nothing to push the pro-abortion agenda. Why not stop and take an honest look at when life begins for the unborn child and when she begins to feel pain?

President Obama has dismissed questions about the Benghazi debacle as a political “side show.” Demand the truth. The American people deserve answers.

With the weekend’s grand slam appearance on the Sunday talk shows by yet another official unqualified to talk about Benghazi, the Obama Administration has again shot itself in the foot.

White House Communications Director Dan Pfeiffer attempted to defend U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice’s mischaracterization of the Benghazi terrorist attack, which she blamed on the now infamous anti-Islam video. It was a poor show.

All of this stands in stark contrast with White House’s handling of the Navy SEAL Team Six raid that killed Osama bin Laden on May 2, 2011. We have all seen the images of President Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton huddled in the White House situation room with the national security staff, riveted to live images of the nighttime raid. It was hardly over before President Obama, speaking proudly as commander in chief, went on national television to announce the death of the enemy of the American people. The Administration even cooperated with the producers of the movie Zero Dark Thirty about the mission to kill bin Laden.

But now, “irrelevant” is the word chosen by Dan Pfeiffer over and over to describe some of the most pressing questions regarding the White House’s role in the Benghazi affair. Instantaneously, “irrelevant” became the word of the day on social media.

Where was President Obama the night of the terrorist attack? Unlike the Osama bin Laden raid, the President was disturbingly disconnected from the attack on an American ambassador. After the five o’clock intelligence briefing in which Obama was informed that the U.S. diplomatic facility was under attack and the U.S. ambassador to Libya missing, the President’s whereabouts remain unaccounted for the rest of the evening. The next day, Obama flew to Las Vegas for a fundraiser. “I don’t remember what room the President was in on that night, and that’s a largely irrelevant fact,” Pfeiffer snapped at Fox’s Chris Wallace.

Or who doctored the talking points, served up to the media and the American people by Rice on September 16 with such conviction? That also, according to Pfeiffer, is “irrelevant.”

Contrary to the election-time narrative that “al-Qaeda is on the run,” defeated by the Obama Administration, President Obama and his staff are now pleading ignorance across the board. Pfeiffer’s problematic media appearance could fit into an emerging narrative that the Obama Administration may have been more incompetent, than Machiavellian in its handling of the Benghazi terrorist attack. Administration officials spoke to CBS News on condition of anonymity, proffering the line that bungling, ignorance, and inexperience may have been at the root of the debacle that left four Americans dead in Benghazi.

It is not likely, though, that Members of Congress will be satisfied with being told that their questions are “irrelevant” when hearings to unearth the truth resume this week.

Virtue Is Its Own Reward, but Using a Gun to Save a Child’s Life in DC Will Get You a $1,000 Fine

This story belongs in my “Great Moments in Local Government” series, which features examples of bureaucratic and political stupidity (see here, here, here,here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, and here) that will make you laugh, cry, yell, or all of the above.

Not surprisingly, the deeply dysfunctional local government in Washington, DC, wants to be part of this collection.

We have what at first seems like a feel-good story. A little boy is attacked by some vicious pit bulls. Other people in the neighborhood flee to protect themselves. But one man acts quickly and saves the child’s life.

Here are some details from the Washington Times report.

…11-year-old Jayeon Simon and his friend rode bicycles near Eighth and Sheridan streets Northwest in the Brightwood neighborhood. According to court records filed in D.C. Superior Court, three unleashed pit bulls pounced on Jayeon and attacked him. Seeing the attack, Mr. Srigley went inside his home to get his Ruger 9 mm pistol while several other men hopped over fences to get away from the dogs, court records state. From behind the wooden fence of his front lawn, Mr. Srigley began firing at the dogs. His shots attracted the attention of a Metropolitan Police Department officer on bicycle patrol nearby, and he also opened fire on the dogs, killing the other two. The boy survived the attack but now bears scars on his elbow, torso and leg as a reminder.

Mr. Srigley seems like a great guy. Or at least a guy who did something great. Surely he was rewarded, right?

Did he get a commendation from the police department? A ceremonial key to the city from the Mayor?

Mr. Srigley should have been a good liberal, called 911, and relied on the cops to arrive after the child was dead

Don’t be silly. We’re talking about Washington, DC.

…Benjamin Srigley, 39, was required to pay a $1,000 fine…for the three unregistered firearms and the ammunition that investigators found in his possession, said Ted Gest, a spokesman for the office of the attorney general.

But showing great mercy, they decided not to try to send him to prison.

“We took it into account that he saved this boy’s life,” Mr. Gest said.

Gee, what a bunch of swell guys in the DC government. Mr. Srigley is “only” hit with a $1,000 fine.

One hopes that this won’t cause a potential Good Samaritan to let some kid get killed or some woman get raped in the future.

P.S. At least the pit bulls weren’t in a dorm room providing federally-mandated “emotional support.”

P.P.S. One of the comments below reminds me that Mr. Srigley should have been a housebroken journalist since that entitles you to a get-out-of-jail-free card for gun offenses in Washington, DC>

Denny Burk: Is Dr. Gosnell the usual case or not?

Many in the world today are taking a long look at the abortion industry because of the May 14, 2013 guilty verdict and life term penalty handed down by a jury (which included 9 out of 12 pro-choice jurors)  to Dr. Kermit Gosnell. During this time of reflection I wanted to put forth some of the pro-life’s best arguments.

I have noticed that many abortion advocates have been acting as if the atrocities of Kermit Gosnell are a one-off anomaly—as if there are no other late term abortionists in the United States who have to deal with infants born alive. Nothing could be further from the truth. Live Action has produced a couple undercover videos showing how routine both late-term abortions are. The videos also show that late-term abortionists everywhere have to deal with infants who survive abortions.

The video shows a clinic worker telling a woman to flush her baby down the toilet if the baby survives the abortion. This video shows an abortion doctor describing what he would do if a baby survived an abortion. In short, he says he would let it die on the table (which is illegal).

Evie Tornquist-Karlsson was Christian Music’s greatest sweetheart , she took the world by storm with her sweet angelic face & voice that touched everyone’s heart with her love for Jesus. She will forever be known as the girl who sang her songs for Jesus Christ. She was born 1957 in Rahway, New Jersey, professionally known as Evie, is a Contemporary Christian music singer who was known in the late 1970s and early 1980s for songs such as “Say I Do”, “My Tribute”, “Live For Jesus”, “Pass It On”, “Never The Same”, “Mirror”, “Born Again”, “Come On Ring Those Bells”, “Step Into The Sunshine” and “Four Feet Eleven”.

Born in the United States to Norwegian immigrants, Evie began her singing career as a young teenager while visiting her parents’ homeland. She released her English language debut album at the age of 16 in 1974, and went on to release more than 30 albums, including several in various Scandinavian languages. Evie was recognized as the Dove Award recipient of Female Vocalist of the Year for 1977 and 1978. She married Swedish pastor and musician Pelle Karlsson in 1979 and retired from performing music in 1981 to pursue other avenues of ministry, such as Sky Angel.

In the early 1980s Pelle and Evie Karlsson felt the Lord’s leading to join the “SKY ANGEL DOMINION NETWORK”. The Lord used them both in a might way for the Lord’s glory. While there, they recorded a few other albums. Evie and her husband has since left the SKY ANGEL NETWORK a number of years ago. Although Evie is “officially” retired from performing and doing concerts all the time on a regular basis since 1981 – she is still pursuing her music ministry with White Field Music, (owned by Pelle and Evie Karlsson) in Florida and very much involved in missions work with Back to Jerusalem. A vital, encouraging work. They also produce a wonderful outstanding 30 minute weekly series for Back To Jerusalem which can be viewed online. Evie still does some concerts in Churches and in other venues and is also still on tour. Evie currently resides with her husband Pelle in Florida. Their two children, Kris and Jenny Karlsson are now out of high school. Jenny is already now very recently married and is a school teacher. Evie and her music is still loved today more then ever, and Evie albums are still being hunted down and collected by her fans. I had the wonderful privilege of having a very special invitation to a Concert that Evie was able to take part of, in September of 2005. Finally! an update on Evie Tornquist

If you were an Evie fan back in her heyday…basically, the mid to late ’70’s…you’ve probably wondered whatever happened to the pretty, petite blonde with the golden voice. In fact, it always amazes me that many hits on my website are from people looking for info on Evie (I mention her in my article on Christmas music.)

Well, CCM Magazine actually has an article about Evie in its June issue (although I wasn’t able to find it on the magazine’s website…you’ll have to get a physical copy of the mag to read the story.)

Just thinking about Evie brings back memories of my days at Baptist Bible College in Springfield, Missouri. I don’t think there was a red-blooded guy on campus who didn’t have a crush on the little Norwegian songbird. And I just about wore out the 8-track of her “Mirror” album…come on, there were some really good songs on that album! We’re talking “Lord Send that Morning,” “If Heaven was Never Promised to Me,” “Jesus Was There All the Time,” and more.

According to the CCM article, Evie left the Christian music scene in 1981, while she was still quite popular. She told CCM in 1996, “Interestingly, people think I got out of it because I started having kids. But toward the end of that time, ’79 or ’80, I felt somewhat uncomfortable with what was happening. I felt as though my hands were tied in terms of ministry. I wanted more freedom to pursue ministry; but when people pay to hear you sing, you have a responsibility to do what they paid you to do.” Evie does say she looks back on that time with pleasant memories, calling them “wonderful experiences.”

Evie is 48 now, and lives in Florida with her husband Pelle Karlsson and their children, Kris and Jenny. Says CCM: “The Karlssons have continued their musical ministry as a family over the years, largely out of the limelight.”

Evie did appear with Mark Lowry at a concert here a couple of years ago, sponsored by Radio 91. Although I didn’t make it to the concert, I saw pics that were taken there, and Evie looked as lovely as ever…and I understand she’s still in fine voice.

Open letter to President Obama (Part 324) Higher Taxes Mean Bigger Government, not Lower Deficits

Dear Mr. President,

I know that you receive 20,000 letters a day and that you actually read 10 of them every day. I really do respect you for trying to get a pulse on what is going on out here.

It is obvious to me that if you get your hands on more money then you will continue to spend away our children’s future. You have already taken the national debt from 11 trillion to 16 trillion in just 4 years. Over, and over, and over, and over, and over and over I have written Speaker Boehner and the Congressmen (Griffin, Womack, Crawford) in Arkansas concerning this. I am hoping they will stand up against this reckless spending that our federal government has done and will continue to do if given the chance.

I have written and emailed Senator Pryor over, and over again with spending cut suggestions but he has ignored all of these good ideas in favor of keeping the printing presses going as we plunge our future generations further in debt. I am convinced if he does not change his liberal voting record that he will no longer be our senator in 2014.

Here is another fine article below from Dan Mitchell that shows what will happen to the increased revenue if the Republicans are dumb enough to give it to President Obama. He will surely waste it on increased government spending. Milton Friedman rightly noted that we are truly blessed that the federal government is so inefficient so at least they will not be able to hurt us as much as they could if it ran efficiently. Here is the exact quote:

The only reason there’s any chance of keeping government limited is because government is so inefficient and does so poorly.

President Obama and other statists in Washington want a big class-warfare tax hike. They claim the additional revenue is necessary to reduce red ink.

But their ideological crusade is based on some blatant distortions.

In other words, the Obama tax hike will make government bigger, even if some naively support the tax hike because they want smaller deficits.

That being said, I’m not overly optimistic that Obama’s divisive proposal can be stopped, largely because I don’t think Republicans will take my advice on how to win this fight.

But at least the American people have an appropriately jaundiced view about what will happen if Obama does prevail.

Here are the results of a recent poll showing that a strong majority understand that more revenue will lead to an expansion in the burden of government spending.

Though I suppose these numbers don’t necessarily show that people are against higher taxes. Perhaps some of the 57 percent want higher taxes because they want more government.

After all, that’s the most logical interpretation of the election results in California, where voters approved a referendum to rape and pillage upper-income taxpayers.

But I suspect – and definitely hope – that most of the 57 percent understand that making America more like Europe is not a desirable outcome.

By the way, I shared some polling data last week showing that CPAs think that changes in tax rates lead to substantial Laffer Curve effects.

They were also asked their opinion on whether higher taxes will be used for deficit reduction.

As you can see, they were even more skeptical than the general public, with more than 60 percent definitely thinking that more revenue in Washington will lead to more spending.

To be sure, there’s no particular reason to think that CPAs have any special insight on this issue. On the Laffer Curve question, by contrast, they presumably do have insider knowledge of how taxpayers respond when tax policy changes.

But I’m digressing. The point of this post is to explain that higher taxes will lead to bigger government.

And if you don’t believe me, then why did the New York Times unintentionally admit that the only budget deal that actually resulted in a budget surplus was the one that cut taxes instead of raising them?

I have written on the Book of Ecclesiastes and the subject of the meaning of our lives on several occasions on this blog. In this series on Ecclesiastes I hope to show how secular humanist man can not hope to find a lasting meaning to his life in a closed system without bringing God back into the picture. This is the same exact case with Solomon in the Book of Ecclesiastes.

Why Faith Really Matters (Ecclesiastes 1-4)

Imagine a tightrope walker about to take the first precarious step across a thin wire suspended between two skyscrapers.  But just as he’s about to begin an assistant cautions, “I think you’d better wait.  We haven’t yet secured the cable at the other end……… and we really need to double-check the security lock at this end too……… but you can go ahead if you want – enjoy yourself!”

No entertainer, no matter how skilled, would be foolish enough to take even one step on that tentative wire.  Yet that’s a picture of what’s being asked of the youth of America today.  They’re consistently taught in educational institutions, “We don’t know what happens to you when you die and we’re not certain where you came from…. but make the most of your life!”   With no certainty about their destiny and no meaningful sense of identity is it any wonder that many are indifferent or cynical about life?  Any wonder why there’s an increase in teen smoking, body piercing, drug abuse, school violence, sexual promiscuity, and tragic suicides?  If we’re just evolutionary accidents who are here for a few brief years and then it’s over we might as well just cash in on the moment.  “Whatever!”

That was King Solomon’s conclusion when he wrote the book of Ecclesiastes hundreds of years ago.  He examined life from the humanistic perspective and it all seemed meaningless to him – as futile as chasing the wind.  We live a few years, work hard to achieve, enjoy some pleasure and then we vanish – so what’s the use?

Several factors made Solomon cynical about life: the failure of any one man to make a lasting impression (1:11), the injustice of the oppressed, (3:16 & 4:1-3), and the inner discontentment with life as it is (4:7-8).  But the primary source of Solomon’s despair was the certainty of death. “Like the fool, the wise man too must die!  So I hated life, because the work that is done under the sun was grievous to me. All of it is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.  I hated all the things I had toiled for under the sun, because I must leave them to the one who comes after me.” (2:16- 18)

“As one dies, so dies the other. All have the same breath; man has no advantage over the animal. Everything is meaningless.  All go to the same place; all come from dust, and to dust all return.  Who knows if the spirit of man rises upward and if the spirit of the animal goes down into the earth?” (3:19 – 21)

Let’s be honest, Solomon was right in his cynicism–unless……unless there is a God who created us and cares about us….unless the spirit of man does rise upward and there is life after death….unless there is a judgment day when all things will be made right.  Wow! Does that possibility ever change things!

Do you see how important a spiritual belief system is? Faith is not just something for superstitious, religious people who, “need that sort of thing”  Faith is a huge issue for everyone.  If the Biblical account about God and eternity is true then every day has significance.  If it’s not, life is totally meaningless and we all might as well stand in line for the high windows and get it over with because, “God has set eternity in the hearts of men”. (3:11)

Just as a goldfish in a small bowl keeps bumping up against the glass instinctively longing for a wider body of water, so the human heart craves something beyond this life.  There is an undeniable, inner longing to live beyond the grave and until that need is satisfied the soul is discontented and troubled.  But when that desire is confidently fulfilled there is an inner peace that passes understanding.  There’s a familiar saying that wraps up the theme of Ecclesiastes, ‘Life without God is a hopeless end; but with God it’s an endless hope”.  That’s a BIG difference!

That is why I have returned to his work over and over and presented my own Christian worldview as an alternative.

My interest in Woody Allen is so great that I have a “Woody Wednesday” on my blog www.thedailyhatch.org every week. Also I have done over 30 posts on the historical characters mentioned in his film “Midnight in Paris.” (Salvador Dali, Ernest Hemingway,T.S.Elliot,  Cole Porter,Paul Gauguin,  Luis Bunuel, and Pablo Picasso were just a few of the characters.) Check out these trivia facts below.

[Movies are a great diversion] because it’s much more pleasant to be obsessed over how the hero gets out of his predicament than it is over how I get out of mine.

My mother always said I was a very cheerful kid until I was 5 years old, and then I turned gloomy.

I can’t really come up with a good argument to choose life over death. Except that I’m too scared.

I was never bothered if a film was not well received. But the converse of that is that I never get a lot of pleasure out of it if it is. So it isn’t like you can say, ‘He’s an uncompromising artist.’ That’s not true. I’m a compromising person, definitely. It’s that I don’t get much from either side.

Your perception of time changes as you get older, because you see how brief everything is. You see how meaningless … I don’t want to depress you, but it’s a meaningless little flicker.

I once thought there was a good argument between whether it’s worth it to make a film where you confront the human condition, or an escape film. You could argue that the Fred Astaire film is performing a greater service than the Bergman film, because Ingmar Bergman is dealing with a problem that you’re never going to solve. Whereas ‘Fred Astaire’, you walk in off the street, and for an hour and half they’re popping champagne corks and making light banter and you get refreshed, like a lemonade.

I’ve made perfectly decent films, but not 8½ (1963), not The Seventh Seal (1957) (“The Seventh Seal”), The 400 Blows (1959) (“The 400 Blows”) or L’avventura (1960) – ones that to me really proclaim cinema as art, on the highest level. If I was the teacher, I’d give myself a B.

Ireland’s one of the few places that lives up to the hype, that is as beautiful as everyone tells you it is.

[on directing the LA Opera, alongside William Friedkin] I figured, “Eh, I’ll be dead before it happens. I’m 72. I’m never going to make it to the opera.” But it came around, and next Monday, I start rehearsal. I’ll just do the best I can and then get out of town and let them tar and feather Friedkin.

[on directing an opera] He [Plácido Domingo] said, “What if we do the Puccini trilogy – it’s three one-acts that are always done together? The first two, Billy Friedkin will direct. You’ll only be responsible for a one-act, a one-hour opera, and it’s funny.” You know, funny to opera people is not funny to the Marx Brothers.

It would be a disgrace and a humiliation if Barack Obama does not win… It would be a terrible thing if the American public was not moved to vote for him, that they actually preferred more of the same.

I never had a teacher who made the least impression on me and if you ask who are my heroes, the answer is simple and truthful: George S. Kaufman and the Marx Brothers.

I don’t believe in an afterlife, although I am bringing a change of underwear.

[on 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)] It was one of the few times in my life that I realized that the artist was so much ahead of me.

I’ve never felt that if I waited five years between films, I’d make better ones. I just make one when I feel like making it. And it comes out to be about one a year. Some of them come out good, and some of them come out less than good. Some of them may be very good and some may be very bad. But I have no interest in an overall plan for them or anything.

If I write a film and there is a part in it for me – great. But if I sit down in advance and think, “I’d like to be in this film,” or “It’s been a long time since I’ve been in a film so it would be fun to do one,” then all of a sudden there’s an enormous amount of limits and compromise. I can only play a few things so that compromises the idea instantly. I think Deconstructing Harry (1997) would have been better with Dustin Hoffman or Robert De Niro, for sure. I also tried very hard to get another actor to play the part I did in The Curse of the Jade Scorpion (2001). I think we tried to see if Tom Hanks was available, and Nicholson. Either they weren’t available or didn’t want to do it. So I finally played that part. And I shouldn’t have, because it wasn’t my usual kind of role, and I think that hurt the film.

I’ve been around a long time, and some people may just get tired of me, which I can understand. I’ve tried to keep my films different over the years, but it’s like they complain, “We’ve eaten Chinese food every day this week.” I want to say, “Well, yes, but you had a shrimp meal and you had a pork meal and you had a chicken meal.” They say, “Yes, yes, but it’s all Chinese food.” That’s the way I feel about myself. I have a certain amount of obsessive themes and a certain amount of things I’m interested in and no matter how different the film is, whether it’s Small Time Crooks (2000) here or Zelig (1983) there, you find in the end that it’s Chinese food. If you’re not in the mood for my obsessions, then you may not be in the mood for my film. Now, hopefully, if I make enough films, some of them will come out fresh, but there’s no guarantee. It’s a crapshoot every time I make one. It could come out interesting or you might get the feeling that, God, I’ve heard this kvetch before – I don’t know.
