Christian Rock Pioneer Larry Norman’s Songs Part 2

Christian Rock Pioneer Larry Norman’s Songs Part 2

I posted a lot in the past about my favorite Christian musicians such as Keith Green (I enjoyed reading Green’s monthly publications too), and 2nd Chapter of Acts and others. Today I wanted to talk about one of Larry Norman’s songs. David Rogers introduced me to Larry Norman’s music in the 1970’s and his album IN ANOTHER LAND came out in 1976 and sold an enormous amount of copies for a Christian record back then.

Larry Norman

By CBNmusic

CBN.com – In 1969, Capitol Records released Upon This Rock by 22-year-old California kid Larry Norman. At the time, no one suspected this would be a watershed moment in Christian music history. With one album, a longhaired outcast from San Francisco began a legacy that ushered in the Jesus movement and brought blunt Christianity to rock’n’roll.

Larry Norman was born April 8, 1947. Saved at the age of five, he started singing at nine. By the mid-1960s, he formed the musical group People! and scored a Billboard hit with “I Love You.” Norman toured with artists such as Janis Joplin and the Doors. It was not long before Norman had issues with his record label over the Christian content in his music. In the midst of the success of People!, Norman left to go solo.

After People!, he spent time sharing the gospel on the streets of Los Angeles. A near death experience in 1968 pushed Norman further towards his obsession with the Rapture and salvation. Out of these spiritually awakenings came Upon This Rock, and the 1968 album broke the mold.

It was the first major label record to marry rock music with the gospel. With street language and gritty imagery, Norman was the first to put into practice that Christian music could be powerful in its message yet relevant to the times.

Norman parted ways with Capitol Records soon after and was snatched up by MGM. His first record under the subsidiary Verve label, Only Visiting This Planet, is hailed as Norman’s best work. Its abrasive, urban reality of the gospel was meant to reach the flower children disillusioned by the government and the church. Norman mixed his Christian message with strong political themes. Protest-esque songs like “I Am the Six o’Clock News” and “The Great American Novel” spoke out against racism. The landmark re-recording of “Wish We’d All Been Ready” from Upon This Rock painted an eerie picture of life after the Rapture.

Banned by the Christian music industry, Norman received his early kudos from mainstream audiences. The Billboard magazine named him “the most important writer since Paul Simon.” Norman was loved mostly overseas. He performed across the globe in Australia, Italy and Japan. He sold out the Royal Albert Hall in London six times.

In 1974, Norman started Solid Rock Records after leaving MGM. His 1976 album, In Another Land, put him back in touch musically with the Jesus he proclaimed on Upon This Rock. “Six Sixty Six” was akin to “Wish We’d All Been Ready” in his view of the Antichrist. His testimony strongly shined through “I am a Servant.”

In addition to his contributions to Christian music, Norman discovered and mentored fellow Jesus rocker Randy Stonehill. Norman also launched the careers of Steve Camp, Keith Green, and Daniel Amos.

Norman’s life changed dramatically in 1978 when an airplane accident caused him spinal and brain damage. It would be the beginning of his life-long health battle. He toured less but continued to release live albums. In 1980, he started Phydeauz (pronounced “Fido”) Records.

Norman’s watermark hits such as “Why Should the Devil Have All the Good Music” continue to inspire. In 1995, during the success of Jesus Freak, dc Talk resurrected “Wish We’d All Been Ready.” The cover, recorded live, introduced a new generation to the Jesus Movement.

After 30 years, the Christian music community recognized Norman for his pioneering efforts. The Gospel Music Association inducted him into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 2001. Only Visiting this Planet was CCM Magazine’s greatest album in Christian music, second only to Amy Grant’s Lead Me On.

With over 50 albums under his belt, Norman is still the righteous rocker. In 2004, he released Snowblind, a live album recorded in Utah containing many of his classic hits. Currently, Norman is recovering from his 2002 quadruple bypass surgery in Oregon.

Larry Norman is a veteran of Christian music in many ways. He survived death threats, censorship, relentless touring, and harsh criticism. He made his name preaching to the outcast, offending the church and making record executives nervous with his brand of Jesus rock. Norman wrote songs that spoke to the heart but aimed for the jugular. It is nothing less than legendary for the original Jesus Freak.

Review and Pictures and Video Clips of Woody Allen’s movie “MAGIC IN THE MOONLIGHT” Part 12

‘Magic in the Moonlight’ (2014) Movie Review

Fun, witty and charming, but loses steam in its final third

Magic in the Moonlight movie review

Emma Stone gets vibrations in Magic in the Moonlight

In my opinion a new Woody Allen movie every year is a bit of a treat. Yes, they can disappoint such as Whatever Works, You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger and To Rome with Love, but they can also be true knock outs such as Vicki Cristina Barcelona andMidnight in Paris, along with the stunning performance from Cate Blanchett in last year’s Blue Jasmine, and that’s only looking at the last six Allen films. He’s directed nearly 50 over his illustrious career and I’d say his latest, Magic in the Moonlight, falls somewhere in the middle.

‘MAGIC IN THE MOONLIGHT’
REVIEW
GRADE: B-

Magic in the Moonlight“Magic in the Moonlight” is a Sony Pictures Classics release, directed byWoody Allen and is ratedPG-13 for a brief suggestive comment, and smoking throughout. The running time is 1 hour 37 minutes.

The cast includes Emma Stone, Colin Firth, Jacki Weaver, Hamish Linklater,Eileen Atkins, Marcia Gay Harden, Erica Leerhsen and Simon McBurney.

For more information on this film including pictures, trailers and a detailed synopsisclick here.

Set in France in the 1920s, the film is complete with all the acerbic wit, pessimism for life and otherwise charm the better Allen films often exude. Magic in the Moonlight‘s first two-thirds are delightful as we’re first introduced to Colin Firth in the role of Stanley Crawford, a pompous and arrogant English magician whose stage name is Wei Ling Soo. Yes, he puts on something of a full “Fu Manchu” disguise for his performances, complete with a bald cap, fake mustache and red robe.

Accompanying his ego, Stanley has quite the negative attitude, accepting the world only for what he sees, holding no belief in God, mysticism or the supernatural whatsoever. Putting his beliefs to the test, Stanley’s life-long friend Howard Burkan (Simon McBurney) has a new challenge for him, the debunking of a spiritualist claiming to be able to see the future, into your past as well as the power to contact the dead. Angered at the mere idea his friend could not see through the swindle and that someone might get away with scamming unwitting believers, Stanley accepts the challenge and the two set off for the south of France.

Enter Sophie Baker (Emma Stone), an American born in Kalamazoo, Michigan and the supposed medium Stanley has come to expose, and her mother (Marcia Gay Harden). Immediately Sophie is able to see glimmers of who Stanley may be as he’s unwilling to show his hand for a second, and not in the least willing to accept she is anything other than a fraud… at least not at first.

Stanley, as it turns out, for all his negativity is ready to accept something beyond the real world, even if he didn’t know it. This is to say, he’s eventually convinced of Sophie’s powers, becoming her biggest fan and with this comes one of the film’s two big questions: “Would life be better if I walked around clueless and stupid?“. The other is to ask, “How long can you swindle a swindler and do we ever really want to believe there isn’t something more out there?”

It’s in these questions the film gains and loses its steam all at once. Anyone that’s seen a Woody Allen film knows the guy is obsessed with the meaning of life as well as what I would say a fear of death and a frustration for life’s little annoyances. As with so many of his leading men, Firth is essentially playing the role of Woody Allen and, like Owen Wilson inMidnight in Paris, brings his own twist to the character, though I’m sure many will say that “twist” is to channel John Cleese, but who’s going to complain about that? It’s absolutely wonderful and Firth is as good here as he has been in anything.

Stone fits perfectly into Allen’s world, comically getting spiritual “vibrations” in her attempt to not only convince Stanley, but the audience as well that her power is real. But this is a Woody Allen film, can we really believe he’d accept the idea a spiritual medium exists? I don’t know, did you believe a magic car was taking Owen Wilson back to the Golden Age inMidnight in Paris?

You’re sure to get caught up in the film’s first two thirds, along with not only the performances of Stone and Firth, but those of Jacki Weaver as a widow convinced of Sophie’s powers as well as her son, Brice (Hamish Linklater), whose fallen for Sophie hook, line and sinker to the point he serenades her with a mandolin throughout the film. But it’s the final third where many are likely to look on with raised eyebrows as Allen turns the film into something of a sappy, Nicholas Sparks-esque romance not at all fitting of the film’s tone and theme throughout, especially considering there are so many more intriguing directions he could have taken the story.

Walking out of the theaters all I could think of is to wonder just how quickly Allen writes his films and if he ever deviates from what he’s written once he begins production. The final third of this film feels like a mood change as if Allen may have written the film when he was in a bit of a pessimistic state of mind, but by the time he began filming optimism had seeped in and took over, allowing for a whole new ending, betraying the film’s actual tone and tenor. Who knows? For what it’s worth, Magic in the Moonlight remains a fun film, a middle-of-the-road Allen feature you’re sure to get a few laughs at if not left walking away wishing it had ended a little better.

GRADE: B-

______________________________

In 1980 I read the book FREE TO CHOOSE by Milton Friedman and it really enlightened me a tremendous amount.  I suggest checking out these episodes and transcripts of Milton Friedman’s film series FREE TO CHOOSE: “The Failure of Socialism” and “What is wrong with our schools?”  and “Created Equal”  and  From Cradle to Grave, and – Power of the Market. In this episode “The Tyranny of Controls” Milton Friedman shows how government planning and detailed control of economic activity lessens productive innovation and consumer choice.

In this episode Milton Friedman asserts, ” What we need are constitutional restraints on the power of government to interfere with free markets in foreign exchange, in foreign trade, and in many other aspects of our lives.”

Milton Friedman’s Free to Choose – Ep.2 (4/7) – The Tyranny of Control

The main reason why the Japanese yen went up so sharply in price in 1977 and 1978 was because the Japanese government had been trying to prevent the yen from going up in price. In the process what might have been small disturbances were allowed to accumulate into a major gap in trade. As a result when market forces were finally permitted to operate, as sooner or later they must be, it took a major change in the yen exchange rate to bring things back into life. Why don’t governments learn, because governments never learn, only people learn, and the people who learn today may not be the people in charge of economic policy tomorrow.

As you contemplate this, you may come to agree with me, that what we need are constitutional restraints on the power of government to interfere with free markets in foreign exchange, in foreign trade, and in many other aspects of our lives.

DISCUSSION

Participants: Robert McKenzie, Moderator; Milton Friedman; Richard Deason, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers; Donald Rumsfeld, President, G.D. Searle & Company; Helen Hughes, Director of Economic Studies, World Bank; Jagdish Bhagwati, Professor of Economics, MIT

McKENZIE: Now, here in Chicago, the special guests who have been watching that film have their say.

DEASON: This film has set me on edge. There is political, social, ethical considerations which do not reflect in the economic philosophy put out. There is a pervading feeling in this that the individual worker is to be totally sacrificed for the overall good of society. I see __ I don’t see how possibly you can sacrifice individuals’ for overall good of society because society is nothing but those millions and millions of individuals, put together. And nowhere is there any consideration given to the social and the ethical aspects of the free trade formula that you advocate.

McKENZIE: Let’s get other views now, around the group. What’s your reaction, Don Rumsfeld, as a businessman, to the idea that Milton Friedman’s advanced, that America ought to buy in the cheapest markets, the cheapest goods, without protecting against them?

RUMSFELD: I swore I would never even try to defend Milton Friedman. And I won’t. But let me comment, first, on Dick’s comment. It bothers me to hear social and moral arguments invoked in an issue like this, because it seems to me the measure is what actually happens to human beings. Each individual ought to be concerned about humanity. For a single individual who is unemployed, that’s a hundred percent unemployment.

DEASON: Absolutely.

RUMSFELD: And we recognize that. I recognize that. But the real world is, if you, as the film did, go to India, if you want to see things that one can describe as inhumane, and poverty, and problems of human beings, they exist. And the test ought to be, what works? What, in fact, will provide a circumstance that will be more than dynamic, and more productive in the world?

HUGHES: It is true that in the long run we would all be better off with free trade. I agree with Milton. But it’s the short run that matters, and in the short run there are serious adjustment problems. Now there’s no question that the developing countries need access to markets such as American markets. And America needs them to export so that they can export more to developing countries. American exports to developing countries have moved from something like twenty percent of total exports to thirty percent over the last ten years. But the adjustment is important, because what is happening at present is that it’s not just a random group of workers that is affected by this trade, it’s the most disadvantaged and underprivileged workers in America which are being affected; and they are, by and large, women, and members of minorities; in garments, in electronics. And I think that the adjustment consists of action on both the developing and the developed country sides. From the __ let’s take the American side. On the American side, the unions and industry, I think, have to get off discussion about moral issues and get their act in order.

BHAGWATI: I couldn’t agree more with Helen. I think there is a very valid income distributional problem involved here. Certainly society gets better off, consumers get better off as a result of cheaper imports, and I’m all for that, and there I agree completely with Milton. But if the incidence of the adjustment falls on disadvantaged groups, then you would want to do something about it, if this really becomes an ethical issue. But the other thing which I think Milton does bring up, which I disagree sharply with is: Suppose the foreign governments do subsidize and actively promote exports to you. Should you just sit back and just say, “Well, we’re going to be better off as a result of this”? I don’t think that takes into account the fact of the whole international system can break down as a result of what people perceive in pluralist economics as unfair competition emerging. And I think this is really what you’re beginning to see. So we do need some sanctions. I mean, I may receive stolen property, and I’m better off. Of course I’m better off. But if, as a result of this, I encourage theft, I think few people would agree that was something one did want to worry about.

McKENZIE: Before I call in Milton Friedman on this, a reaction to the comments?

DEASON: Yes. Really to Don and to Helen. Don, you choose to set aside, or you appear to choose to set aside the social and the ethical considerations. And __

RUMSFELD: Not at all, what I said was: You have to put the fact on a scale, that there are social and ethical considerations with a free market or without one. And the tendency is for people to invoke morality only on their side, and not to recognize that there are problems of human beings in this world that are going to occur in each case. And the measure, or the test ought to be, what actually happens out there and address that question.

DEASON: But you must, you must also very much consider the social aspect of this situation. Helen’s comment, the short-term displacement. I have a question for Milton at this point: How long do you put as a timetable on the displacement of these people, of these workers? Five years, ten years, a generation? How long will it be before overall society, you know, balances itself out and the individual is no longer hurt?

FRIEDMAN: Let me take your first __ your last question first and then go to your basic question. I have always been in favor of phasing out tariffs over a five year period, a twenty percent reduction a year for five years to give people time to adjust. Now to your fundamental issue. I thought I had heard every objection to my views imaginable, but you are the first one who has ever accused me of putting the interests of society as a whole ahead of the interests of individuals. If there is one element in my social philosophy, in my ethical philosophy that’s predominant, it is that the ultimate unit is the human being, the individual, and that society is a means whereby we jointly achieve our objectives. I would argue that the social and moral issues are all on the side of free trade, that it is you, and people like you, who introduce protection, who are the ones who are violating fundamental social and moral issues. Tell me, what trade union represents the workers who are displaced because high tariffs reduce exports from this country? Because high tariffs make steel, for example, or other goods, more expensive, as a result, those industries which use steel have fewer __ have to charge higher prices, they have fewer employees, the export industries that would grow up to balance the imports __ tell me, what union represents them? What moral and ethical view do you have about their interests?

McKENZIE: Richard Deason.

DEASON: You still haven’t answered my basic question: How long of a time period, how long of a frame __ five years, ten years, a generation? You still haven’t answered it.

FRIEDMAN: I said __ I said five years.

DEASON: Five years __

McKENZIE: Could we be clear, Milton, on this point. You’re saying, though, that tariffs should be phased out over five years regardless of the action of other countries. It’s not a sort of negotiation or anything else?

FRIEDMAN: Regardless. Regardless of the actions of other countries. So far, obviously, I would prefer to have other countries reduce their tariffs __

McKENZIE: But if they don’t move, America should move?

FRIEDMAN: Absolutely.

McKENZIE: Do you go along with that, Don Rumsfeld?

RUMSFELD: In others words, you’re against reciprocal __

FRIEDMAN: I’m not against __

RUMSFELD: __ you favor getting to truly reciprocal trade, but you’re willing to get there unilaterally?

FRIEDMAN: Yeah.

RUMSFELD: Yeah. It seems to me that it’s probably worth moving in that direction. I don’t know where I would stop. I am not __

McKENZIE: Well, it’s a five year program. Will you buy that?

RUMSFELD: Well, it seems to me that you get action, reaction. To the extent you’re doing something that makes sense for human beings, presumably, that would be persuasive with others. Presumably there would be a logical sequence where other countries would begin to sense that had a certain degree of validity in the world.

McKENZIE: Will that happen, Helen Hughes?

HUGHES: Providing you do something for the displaced workers in the country in which they’re displaced. Because if you don’t do something, if you don’t take some action, and it’s generally got to be government action, you will get such a backlash that you’ll be back in the thirties with the sort of thing that happened with high unemployment.”

David Letterman – Dave Tells Emma Stone About His Metaphysical Encounter

Review and Pictures and Video Clips of Woody Allen’s movie “MAGIC IN THE MOONLIGHT” Part 1

Review: Woody Allen’s ‘Magic in the Moonlight’ is Exactly What It Looks Like

“The gullible are so stupid they deserve it,” says Stanley Crawford (Colin Firth), the cocky stage magician devoted to debunking spiritualists in Woody Allen’s “Magic in the Moonlight.” Allen has built a career around cheeky one-liners, but with this one he’s practically thumbing his nose at the audience. There’s no mistaking “Magic in the Moonlight,” which takes place in the jazz age, features plenty of witty repartee and the shadings of an old school Hollywood romance, as the kind of blithe, talky comedy that Allen produces on autopilot. But 48 years since Allen’s first feature “What’s Up, Tiger Lily,” there’s a clean distinction between endearing Allen comedies and afterthoughts. “Magic in the Moonlight” unquestionably falls into the latter category.

The director, who turns 80 next year, cranks out a movie per year with an arbitrary track record that often depends on whether the material provides enough substance for his cast to do something interesting with it. “Magic in the Moonlight” belongs to the pool of lesser Allen comedies, yet Firth and Emma Stone — as the alleged necromancer Sophie Baker, the object of Stanley’s scrutiny and eventually his affections — bring all the zany energy they can muster. Unfortunately, unlike Cate Blanchett’s remarkable capacity to wrestle the material of last year’s “Blue Jasmine” into her own furious showcase, the actors are provided with a limited range of options.

That being said, this is no travesty of “Scoop”-level proportions, nor does it show the markings of clumsy storytelling like Allen’s most recent misfire, “To Rome With Love.” Instead, “Magic in the Moonlight” offers a half-baked scenario and follows through on it with largely unmemorable results. But maybe that’s worst: it’s simultaneously possible to detect Allen’s voice in every scene and recognize the sheer lack of ambition behind it.

Anyone familiar with Robert B. Weide’s 2012 “American Masters” documentary on Allen knows that he keeps a small box filled with scraps of paper on which he jots down brief ideas for projects. Sometimes, that’s just enough to provide a foundation for his traditional storytelling to gel with the actors eager to inhabit his stylish world. “Magic in the Moonlight,” however, registers as more paper scrap than movie. Within the opening minutes, when Stanley’s old magician pal Howard (Simon McBurney) beckons Stanley to the south of France so he can scrutinize Sophie’s seances, viewers may be able to relate to her supernatural claims by predicting plot’s future direction: Naturally, the skeptically-minded Stanley is entranced by Sophie’s abilities — in addition to her physical appearance, of course.

But forget about the 28-year age difference between the pair. This is a Woody Allen movie! Their romantic attraction marks one element this feature gets right, once again because Allen apparently cedes control to his cast. Firth and Stone generate terrific onscreen chemistry, as the older actor’s leery expression clashes nicely with Stone’s wide-eyed reactions whenever she claims to have received a premonition. It’s obvious that not every motive comes from a sincere place, but given those expectations, Firth and Stone are pleasant enough to watch.

If only Allen gave them more to wade through. It’s no major huge spoiler to reveal that after hearing Sophie make psychic pronouncements about his past, he grows abruptly convinced of her powers — so much so that he even calls for a press conference to denounce his atheistic point of view. Would someone dedicated to the pursuit of scientific evidence give up so easily? Or did Allen, sitting at his typewriter, shrug and decide to just speed things up for the final act?

Such questions would be moot if “Magic in the Moonlight” didn’t place them front and center. Unlike “Curse of the Jade Scorpion” or “Midnight in Paris,” Allen’s latest playful treatment of supernatural events deals more with its characters’ philosophical relationship to otherworldly phenomena rather than their ramifications for the plot. Yet it offers only one truly satisfying investigation into crises of faith: a single shot in which Firth’s character, faced with sudden catastrophe, unleashes a makeshift prayer before changing his tune. Watching him come to his senses is akin to witnessing the movie itself smarten up.

That single late-in-the-game scene nearly saves the movie. Even as it arrives at a rather basic climax, “Magic in the Moonlight” conveys the shadings of a nimble romcom with keen existential undertones. Per usual at this juncture, cinematographer Darius Khonji gives the period a bright, detailed palette that matches the sparkly quality of Allen’s sensibilities. But as a whole, his screenplay feels oddly toothless, as if the filmmaker hopes to relish in the humor of his scenario but failed to come up with enough punchlines to carry it out.

Whenever Allen makes a bad or even just a mediocre movie, it begs the question of whether he’s lost his comedic touch. Certainly his movies lack the smarmy, vulgar polish of earlier efforts, and there are plenty other directors well-positioned to take the mantle of refined comedic filmmaking he’s dominated for so long.

With the success of “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” Wes Anderson has firmly entered Woody Allen territory by making delightfully eccentric comedies with blend goofy antics with serious undertones. Michel Gondry, whose stylish “Mood Indigo” opens this week, also brings a degree of visual invention to comedy that hasn’t manifested to a satisfying degree in Allen’s movies for ages.

Still, Allen’s been playing his game for a long time, and his track record can’t be discounted, especially since it directly informs the work. There are just enough cheery quips and verbal asides to allow “Magic in the Moonlight” to accrue the precise appeal of its creator.

But there’s also just enough to make its shortcomings clear: The pratfall of Allen’s ridiculous output is that every misstep suffers from comparison to better versions from the same director. He’s become so prolific that even his true believers must experience the occasional crisis of faith, but with production already underway for his next feature, it won’t take long before he gets another chance to win us back again.

Grade: C+

“Magic in the Moonlight” opens in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago on July 25 followed by a nationwide expansion.

Adrian Rogers on Revelation 12 and the Country of Israel!!!

____________
__________________________________

___________________________________

In light of recent developments in the news the future fulfillment of Revelation chapter 12 does not look so far-fetched. Obviously Israel is the mother that produced the Messiah (verse 1) and Satan is the dragon that dragged 1/3 of the angels out of heaven with him. Jesus is the child who was born “who will rule over all nations.”

Adrian Rogers noted:

In figurative language, Satan’s tail is so long he is able to sweep a third of the stars from heaven. Now, these are not literal stars; here “stars” represent angels. God judged Satan and cast him out of heaven. When he fell, one-third of the angels fell with him. Does it worry you that one-third of the angels are now following Satan’s directives? Let me encourage you that two-thirds of the angels didn’t fall. We have two angels for every demon! Satan is the ultimate rebel. See Isaiah 14:13-14.

It seems as though the eyes of the entire world are continually upon the tiny state of Israel, and your eyes need to be there as well, for the Jews are God’s people and Israel is a land of destiny. Israel is God’s measuring rod and blueprint for what He is doing in the world.

And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars: 2And she being with child cried, travailing in birth, and pained to be delivered. Revelation 12:1-2.

Scholars say that the “wonder of heaven” symbolized in the figurative language of this passage is the nation of Israel.

Where else do you recall Scripture talking about a vision of the sun, moon and 11 or 12 stars?

Genesis 37:9 : Then he had another dream and told it to his brothers. “Listen to my latest dream,” he boasted. “The sun, moon, and eleven stars bowed low before me!”

In Joseph’s memorable, prophetic dream, his father—the patriarch Jacob—his mother and 11 brothers, who were the heads of the 12 tribes of Israel, were depicted as the sun, moon and 11 stars (Joseph being the 12th).

Genesis 12:3:  I will bless those who bless you and curse those who curse you; and the entire world will be blessed because of you.”

Note that both blessings and cursings are directly linked to how we deal with the nation of Israel.

God called and ordained Israel. It was through Israel all the world would be blessed. (Romans 9:4-5) Every child of God is blessed because of Israel.

A time will arrive during the Tribulation when the Jews will come to Jesus Christ as their Messiah. The Word of God is full of verses (like Zechariah 12:10 and 13:1) which support this prophecy. And Revelation 12:17 states, “the remnant of her seed [Israel]” will “keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.”

Romans 11:25-26:  I want you to know about this truth from God, dear brothers, so that you will not feel proud and start bragging. Yes, it is true that some of the Jews have set themselves against the Gospel now, but this will last only until all of you Gentiles have come to Christ—those of you who will. 26 And then all Israel will be saved.

Do you remember what the prophets said about this? “There shall come out of Zion a Deliverer, and he shall turn the Jews from all ungodliness.

God has not forsaken His ancient people. There’s going to be a fountain opened to them that is filled with the blood of the Lord Jesus.

How can we go about our day-to-day lives without giving everything we have to Jesus Christ? How can we not love Him with a burning, blazing, passionate, emotional love? And how can we not love those whom He loves?

Yes, God has a plan for Israel—

  • conceived by God in eternity past
  • initiated when He called Abraham
  • and to be brought to fulfillment one day when all Israel will “look upon Him whom they have pierced” (John 19:36-39) and make Him their Lord.

We are to love what God loves, and God loves His chosen people. He has made them a blessing that they might be a blessing to the world.

Thank God that there is coming a day when all of this will unfold. However and whenever it does, we know this: Jesus is Lord and He’s coming again. Praise His name!

Revelation 12 Good News Translation (GNT)

The Woman and the Dragon

12 Then a great and mysterious sight appeared in the sky. There was a woman, whose dress was the sun and who had the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars on her head. 2 She was soon to give birth, and the pains and suffering of childbirth made her cry out.

3 Another mysterious sight appeared in the sky. There was a huge red dragon with seven heads and ten horns and a crown on each of his heads. 4 With his tail he dragged a third of the stars out of the sky and threw them down to the earth. He stood in front of the woman, in order to eat her child as soon as it was born. 5 Then she gave birth to a son, who will rule over all nations with an iron rod. But the child was snatched away and taken to God and his throne. 6 The woman fled to the desert, to a place God had prepared for her, where she will be taken care of for 1,260 days.

7 Then war broke out in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, who fought back with his angels; 8 but the dragon was defeated, and he and his angels were not allowed to stay in heaven any longer. 9 The huge dragon was thrown out—that ancient serpent, named the Devil, or Satan, that deceived the whole world. He was thrown down to earth, and all his angels with him.

10 Then I heard a loud voice in heaven saying, “Now God’s salvation has come! Now God has shown his power as King! Now his Messiah has shown his authority! For the one who stood before our God and accused believers day and night has been thrown out of heaven. 11 They won the victory over him by the blood of the Lamb and by the truth which they proclaimed; and they were willing to give up their lives and die. 12 And so be glad, you heavens, and all you that live there! But how terrible for the earth and the sea! For the Devil has come down to you, and he is filled with rage, because he knows that he has only a little time left.”

13 When the dragon realized that he had been thrown down to the earth, he began to pursue the woman who had given birth to the boy. 14 She was given the two wings of a large eagle in order to fly to her place in the desert, where she will be taken care of for three and a half years, safe from the dragon’s attack. 15 And then from his mouth the dragon poured out a flood of water after the woman, so that it would carry her away.16 But the earth helped the woman; it opened its mouth and swallowed the water that had come from the dragon’s mouth. 17 The dragon was furious with the woman and went off to fight against the rest of her descendants, all those who obey God’s commandments and are faithful to the truth revealed by Jesus. 18 And the dragon stoodon the seashore.

Steve Bucci on the Rise of Antisemitism in Europe

Published on Aug 5, 2014

August 4, 2014.

_________________________

With: Steve Bucci

This is a RUSH transcript from “The O’Reilly Factor,” August 4, 2014. This copy may not be in its final form and may be updated.

Watch “The O’Reilly Factor” weeknights at 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. ET!

O’REILLY: “Unresolved Problems Segment” tonight, the rise of anti- Semitism. The conflict between Israel and Hamas has galvanized people all over the world to take sides. In Miami Beach worshipers at a synagogue recently found their cars vandalized. Also in a northeast state county a swastika painted on a synagogue. And all over the world there are anti- Jewish demonstrations.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

RON DERMER, ISRAELI AMBASSADOR TO THE U.S.: There was hope that in the wake of the Holocaust, that anti-Semitism would end and that the establishment of Israel would bring it to an end. And really what happened with historic perspective is that the brief period after the Holocaust made it politically incorrect to be anti-Semitic. And now you have anti- Semitism really coming to the surface again.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

O’REILLY: Joining us now from Washington Steve Bucci from the Heritage Foundation. So how bad is this current anti-Semitism? Is it a dangerous situation or just an annoyance?

STEVE BUCCI, THE HERITAGE FOUNDATION: Well, I have to say, Bill, it’s way more than an annoyance. As you mentioned in your examples, we have problems with it here. Europe is far worse. They have had major riots that have not just been anti-Israeli policy, but are blatantly anti-Jewish.

O’REILLY: What is driving those demonstrations? Is it all jihadist sympathizers?

BUCCI: No, I mean they are predominantly the immigrant Muslim populations in Germany and France, for instance. But there are significant numbers of German citizens, native German citizens and native French citizens either from the far right or the far left who blame Israel and are turning it into an anti-Jewish campaign.

O’REILLY: Is there a theme? I mean when you say blame Israel it’s fairly rational clear-minded people understand that Hamas is a terror group and it is committed to killing Jews and wiping Israel off the face of the earth. That’s not debatable. That’s a fact.

And then when Hamas starts to attack and throw rockets into civilian areas in Israel, Israel of course has to defend itself. So there is not a rationality there or a moral equivalency. So then when people take the sides of Hamas, this is my question. Is it just they hate Jews like they would hate Irish or hate blacks? Is that what drives it?

BUCCI: You and I would agree there’s no rational defense for what Hamas does. But some of their supporters are not rational and they have translated this into an attack on all Jews. That anti-Semitism has been below the surface but not much below and this conflict has now allowed it to come to the surface.

O’REILLY: Now, historically speaking there was an anti-Semitism in Europe because many of the people who controlled the land and the banks were Jewish and that had resentment among the people who didn’t have money and didn’t have land. But now it’s not that way. Now, it’s a pluralistic society. So I’m not understanding why a German or French person non jihadist — I understand that crazy philosophy — why they would hate Jews. Jews have a very small minority. They are not around very much. In America is like four million Jews, that’s all. Why do they hate these people? For what reason?

BUCCI: It’s a very visceral thing. It goes back in some cases the far right an alignment with Nazism. The far left with strong Communism — both of whom hated Jews and persecuted them. So the connection is still there.

O’REILLY: But why? Why did the Nazis and the Communists select the Jews? Because I think our audience in America needs to know the historical perspective. Why were they singled out?

BUCCI: In the case of the Nazis, it was Hitler’s irrational view that Jews were somehow subhuman, were less than the pure Germans of which he wasn’t one either. On the left side, the Communists, a lot of them were Jews which started out but they turned it around particularly with Stalin where he saw them as competitor and a group that needed to be crushed and destroyed so he could have full power.

O’REILLY: So isn’t it though that the Jewish people are very close knit and that was — I don’t know — that was a red flag to some people. I never really understood the anti-Semitism. I never really got it. I think it was economically based back in the Middle Ages. But I will give you the last word.

BUCCI: Well, it’s — they have a closeness other groups have a closeness. The Jews mostly were forced to have a closeness just to survive.

O’REILLY: Just to survive, absolutely.

BUCCI: It is irrational.

O’REILLY: Now, do you think it’s on a rise in America or you think these are just selected nuts doing this kind of stuff?

BUCCI: I hope to be optimistic and say it’s not on a rise across the board. But there are enough people that feel the release to do this because of what’s going on in Israel. And hopefully we can keep it down in our country and eliminate it.

O’REILLY: Well, we don’t tolerate it. We find it, we’ll expose it.

Mr. Bucci, thanks very much. We appreciate it.

Woody Allen’s Magic in the Moonlight: first reviews published

It’s a 20s Riviera romance with conjurors and psychics, Colin Firth and Emma Stone – and the word is, US critics predict a hit, albeit a whimsical one for the older audience

The world premiere of a Woody Allen film is always a bit of an event, and on the back of his revived box office fortunes (with Midnight in Paris) and critical reputation (for the Oscar-winning Blue Jasmine), his new one, Magic in the Moonlight, has been anticipated with some fervour. It was nowhere to be seen at the last Cannes film festival – where, with the film’s Riviera setting, it was thought a certainty to screen – but instead received its debut screening in New York on 17 July.

With an eclectic cast including Colin Firth, Emma Stone, Jacki Weaver, Marcia Gay Harden and Simon McBurney, Magic in the Moonlight has been shrouded in the habitual Allen secrecy since its title was revealedlast October 2013. The film’s US distributors Sony Pictures Classics filled in lots of the blanks on10 July, when they released a long-form synopsis, explaining that Firth plays a stage magician who is on a mission to debunk professional clairvoyant Stone. Now, however, the first reviews are in.

They are led by the two US trade papers Variety and the Hollywood Reporter; while neither are acclaiming Magic in the Moonlight as a Blue Jasmine level late-masterpiece, Variety is considerably kinder, with its chief film critic Scott Foundas describing the film as “a high-spirited bauble that goes down easy thanks to fleet comic pacing, a surfeit of ravishing Cote d’Azur vistas and the genuinely reactive chemistry of stars Colin Firth and Emma Stone”. It also suggests that the 1928-set film will “handily corner the upscale adult demo for the remainder of summer, continuing the Woodman’s late-career hot streak”. (In non-Variety-speak, that means they predict that it will have a strong appeal to the maturer end of the film audience.) Foundas also praises Magic’s photography, calling its “elegantly choreographed traveling master shots bathed in natural light” a key part of “one of his most beautifully made films.”

The Reporter, on the other hand, calls it “a fugacious bit of whimsy that can only be judged minor Woody Allen”. Critic Todd McCarthy said it “feels like a pale attempt to recapture a portion of the public that made Midnight in Paris by far Allen’s biggest hit ever.” He goes on to suggest that “Magic in the Moonlight does have a not-disagreeable expensive-vacation vibe to it. But the one-dimensional characters are mostly ones you’d want to avoid rather than spend a holiday with.” McCarthy also has little time for Firth’s performance, calling it “uncomfortable”, but is a little more complimentary to Stone, describing her as “lively” and “spontaneous”.

In contrast, critic Howard Feinstein, writing for the British trade magazine Screen International, declares that Firth “shines” in his role, and that “the acting is perhaps the strongest suit in the entire enterprise”. In his view, the film’s technical polish is a drawback: “The movie comes across as a tourist brochure, a collection of beautiful, inert postcards … the vintage cars gleam, as if they have just been washed and shined; the perfect period costumes seem just too freshly pressed.” But Feinstein reserves great praise for a key scene in which Stone and Firth shelter from a rainstorm together: it possesses an “aching beauty” and is “pure magic”.

Calling Magic in the Moonlight a “featherweight comedy”, the magazineLittle White Lies has a more angled take, suggesting it’s “a bit like having lunch with your ageing parents: strained, overly familiar, sometimes amusing but seldom genuinely funny”. Critic David Ehrlich’s view is that it’s “the kind of story that Allen could write in his sleep”, that the director “guides the story on auto-pilot, effortlessly pushing another fanciful premise to its logical conclusion” and that it moves forward “with the mechanical transparency of a car that’s lost its hood” – but that this familiarity actually works in the film’s favour: Allen is “effortlessly regurgitating his most familiar modes and tropes with such élan that the movie’s mediocrity ends up being its greatest charm”.

Magic in the Moonlight is released on 25 July in the US, on 28 August in Australia, and 19 September in the UK.

Open letter to President Obama (Part 641) Pro-life atheist Nat Hentoff: With Obama you will get more abortions!!!

Open letter to President Obama (Part 641)

(Emailed to White House on 6-12-13.)

President Obama c/o The White House 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW Washington, DC 20500

Dear Mr. President,

I know that you receive 20,000 letters a day and that you actually read 10 of them every day. I really do respect you for trying to get a pulse on what is going on out here. I know that you don’t agree with my pro-life views but I wanted to challenge you as a fellow Christian to re-examine your pro-choice view. Although we are both Christians and have the Bible as the basis for our moral views, I did want you to take a close look at the views of the pro-life atheist Nat Hentoff too.  Hentoff became convinced of the pro-life view because of secular evidence that shows that the unborn child is human. I would ask you to consider his evidence and then of course reverse your views on abortion.

Pro-life atheist Nat Hentoff: With Obama you will get more abortions!!!

Nat Hentoff is an atheist, but he became a pro-life activist because of the scientific evidence that shows that the unborn child is a distinct and separate human being and even has a separate DNA. His perspective is a very intriguing one that I thought you would be interested in. I have shared before many   cases (Bernard Nathanson, Donald Trump, Paul Greenberg, Kathy Ireland)    when other high profile pro-choice leaders have changed their views and this is just another case like those. I have contacted the White House over and over concerning this issue and have even received responses. I am hopeful that people will stop and look even in a secular way (if they are not believers) at this abortion debate and see that the unborn child is deserving of our protection. That is why the writings of Nat Hentoff of the Cato Institute are so crucial.

In the film series “WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE HUMAN RACE?” the arguments are presented  against abortion (Episode 1),  infanticide (Episode 2),   euthanasia (Episode 3), and then there is a discussion of the Christian versus Humanist worldview concerning the issue of “the basis for human dignity” in Episode 4 and then in the last episode a close look at the truth claims of the Bible.

I truly believe that many of the problems we have today in the USA are due to the advancement of humanism in the last few decades in our society. Ronald Reagan appointed the evangelical Dr. C. Everett Koop to the position of Surgeon General in his administration. He partnered with Dr. Francis Schaeffer in making the video below. It is very valuable information for Christians to have.  Actually I have included a video below that includes comments from him on this subject.

HENTOFF: New president, more abortions

Nat Hentoff

The Washington Times – Washington, DC
11/24/2008

OP-ED:Our new president-elect has not equivocated in his reverence for abortion rights. Speaking at a Planned Parenthood event on July 17, 2007, Barack Obama pledged that his first act as president would be to sign the Freedom of Choice Act. It is the most radical attack yet on the deep beliefs of millions of American pro-lifers.As Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer, a champion of the bill, exulted: “Women would have the absolute right to choose whether to continue or terminate their pregnancies before fetal viability, and that right would be protected by this legislation. The Freedom of Choice Act also supersedes any law, regulation or local ordinance that impinges on a woman’s right to choose,” she said. With regard to “fetal viability” – the ability to survive on his or her own – the ardent supporters of FOCA slide over the language in the surviving 2007 version of FOCA bill that, as Douglas Johnson of the National Right to Life Committee points out, “contains no objective criteria for ‘viability,’ but rather, requires that the judgment regarding ‘viability’ be left entirely in the hands of ‘the attending physician.’ “Guess who that would be? The abortionist! There’s more. The restrictions on “the absolute right to choose” would also apply even after “viability” if a woman wanted to abort what would undeniably be seen during pregnancy as a baby in ultrasound for reasons of her health. But the Supreme Court in 1973 (the same year as Roe v. Wade) in Doe v. Bolton defined very broadly “health” justification for aborting a viable human being, as “physical, emotional, psychological, familial and the woman’s age.” This was nearly a blank check to dispose of that aborted person. It’s no wonder that Mr. Obama opposed the Supreme Court decision that eventually ruled against the lawfulness of “partial-birth abortion,” which the late Democratic Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan (who was pro-choice) said was infanticide.

The rabidly pro-abortion Freedom of Choice Act Mr. Obama supports would – unless there is an unlikely successful filibuster in the Democratic controlled Senate – invalidate parental-notification laws; any state’s requirement of full disclosure of the physical and emotional risks inherent in abortion; and (can you believe this?) all laws prohibiting medical personnel other than licensed physicians from performing abortions because such restrictions might “interfere” with access to this absolute right to abortion.

This is respect for women? As of now, before our abortion president gets his wish, 26 states have informed-consent laws, 36 have parental-involvement laws and 34 states have restrictions on funding for abortions.

Also disposed of will be the “conscience rights” in many states. They include, Mr. Johnson reminds us, “all laws allowing doctors, nurses or other state-licensed professionals, and hospitals or other health care providers, to decline to provide or pay for abortions.” What about religiously based hospitals and clinics that refuse to perform abortions? At presidential press conferences, can we depend on at least some members of the Washington press corps to ask Mr. Obama about that provision or the others I’ve cited? Sen. Dianne Feinstein, California Democrat, heralded the election of Mr. Obama as “a new birth of freedom.” Not, however, for the early-stage human beings – each with his or her own distinct DNA – who, under this law, could never become citizens.

Matt Bowman, an attorney with the pro-life Alliance Defense Fund, projects that if FOCA is passed into law (Lifenews.com, Sept. 24), there will be an increase in abortion “by 125,000 per year” in the United States because of the abolition of laws in states that have parental involvement, informed-consent laws and funding restrictions. “Even with this minimum,” Mr. Bowman adds, “that’s 125,000 children that were not killed this year because we (still) have these laws, and 125,000 (added to the existing 1.3 million abortions) who will be killed in 2009” and beyond.

On Jan. 22, 2008, the 35th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, Mr. Obama said with pride: “Throughout my career, I’ve been a consistent and strong supporter of reproductive justice and have consistently had a 100 percent pro-choice rating with Planned Parenthood and NARAL Pro-Choice America … To truly honor (Roe v. Wade), we need to update the social contract so that women can free themselves and their children from violent relationships.”

What, Mr. President, can be more violent than murder by abortion? Alveda King, niece of Dr. Martin Luther King, said on Nov. 11 (Lifenews.com) that “his dream of full equality remains just a dream as long as unborn children continue to be treated no better than property. The elections are over. The pro-life battle begins anew.”

Nat Hentoff’s column for The Washington Times appears on Mondays.

Thank you so much for your time. I know how valuable it is. I also appreciate the fine family that you have and your commitment as a father and a husband. Now after presenting the secular approach of Nat Hentoff I wanted to make some comments concerning our shared Christian faith.  I  respect you for putting your faith in Christ for your eternal life. I am pleading to you on the basis of the Bible to please review your religious views concerning abortion. It was the Bible that caused the abolition movement of the 1800’s and it also was the basis for Martin Luther King’s movement for civil rights and it also is the basis for recognizing the unborn children.

Dr. Schaeffer’s sweeping epic on the rise and decline of Western thought and Culture

_______________________

I love the works of Francis Schaeffer and I have been on the internet reading several blogs that talk about Schaeffer’s work and the work below was really helpful. Schaeffer’s film series “How should we then live?  Wikipedia notes, “According to Schaeffer, How Should We Then Live traces Western history from Ancient Rome until the time of writing (1976) along three lines: the philosophic, scientific, and religious.[3] He also makes extensive references to art and architecture as a means of showing how these movements reflected changing patterns of thought through time. Schaeffer’s central premise is: when we base society on the Bible, on the infinite-personal God who is there and has spoken,[4] this provides an absolute by which we can conduct our lives and by which we can judge society.  Here are some posts I have done on this series: Francis Schaeffer’s “How should we then live?” Video and outline of episode 10 “Final Choices” , episode 9 “The Age of Personal Peace and Affluence”, episode 8 “The Age of Fragmentation”, episode 7 “The Age of Non-Reason” , episode 6 “The Scientific Age” ,  episode 5 “The Revolutionary Age” , episode 4 “The Reformation”,  episode 3 “The Renaissance”, episode 2 “The Middle Ages,”, and  episode 1 “The Roman Age,” .

Book Report: Escape from Reason by Francis A. Schaeffer (1968)

Executive Summary: Thomas Aquinas is teh suck!!!1!!!

I don’t remember where I got this book; it’s either a book fair bag filler or something that was in the free bin at Hooked on Books. However, since I was on a short, smart book kick, I picked it up.

This cover calls the book a penetrating analysis of trends in modern thought. The introduction goes further: as it’s an evangelical book, its goal is to frame traditional, even fundamental Christian thought with modern philosophical schools of thought. As such, it studies the dual nature of man (nature and grace) and how this fundamental dual nature has been corrupted through various schools of philosophical thought. When Thomas Aquinas intimated that only man’s will suffered from The Fall but that the intellect was capable of arriving independently at grace through its observations of nature and so on, he set into motion the eventual slippery slope where the autonomous lower half of man will overrun the higher half.

Ergo, throughout philosophical history, Kant and Rousseau saying that Freedom is the higher order of man and Nature is the lower, but the mechanistic view of human nature eventually logically trumps freedom, or the Christian Existentialist view (courtesy of Kierkegaard) that divides man’s duality into reason and faith (where the leap of faith is rationally inexplicable), or the regular Existentialist view where an act of will is the highest order.

I don’t remember most of the primary texts that the author refers to, so I can only say that the book poses a relatively sound exploration of the theme. I’m not sure, though, whether I’d characterize the Existentialists as embracing the dual nature of man. The author refers specifically to Sartre’s Nausea and how the Existentialists triumphs over the absurd and achieves the higher portion of himself through an act of will, of seeking authenticity. I remember just enough of my Sartre to suspect that this is a convenient reading of true Existentialism, which is monoist in nature.

So although the book does take a couple things a priori, such as the basic framework of its evangelical Christian roots with the cmbination of Jesus and The Scriptures as a framework for all thought, science, and art, it provided a handy (and short) mechanism for me to resharpen my old philosophical edges.

It looks as though this book and others by this author remain fairly popular–hence their higher prices at Amazon. Perhaps I lucked out in getting this first American printing so cheaply. I better bronze it.

John Donnelly's Gold Don’t forget my novel John Donnelly’s Gold is now available.

Christian Rock Pioneer Larry Norman’s Songs Part 1

Christian Rock Pioneer Larry Norman’s Songs Part 1

I posted a lot in the past about my favorite Christian musicians such as Keith Green (I enjoyed reading Green’s monthly publications too), and 2nd Chapter of Acts and others. Today I wanted to talk about one of Larry Norman’s songs. David Rogers introduced me to Larry Norman’s music in the 1970’s and his album IN ANOTHER LAND came out in 1976 and sold an enormous amount of copies for a Christian record back then.

Calling Larry Norman a “Christian rock pioneer” is easy, and true enough. But before becoming the personification of the Jesus Movement of the late ’60s and early ’70s, he got his start in the mainstream pop world. In 1966, he joined San Jose area band People and signed to Capitol Records. They scored a pop hit with their cover of The Zombies’ “I Love You (But the Words Won’t Come),” before disbanding over internal spiritual conflicts and Norman’s frustration with the label’s re-naming of the band’s debut album. Norman stayed with Capitol for the release of his solo debut, Upon This Rock, a wildly eclectic folk/rock record often referred to as the first Christian rock record of any consequence.

He moved to MGM Records for two critically-acclaimed albums, including Only Visiting This Planet (called “The Best Christian Album of All Time” by the editors of CCM Magazine). But sales were few, and by 1972, Norman went underground, starting Solid Rock Records in the U.S. and Europe, beginning a 35-year run of independence that brought about not only more great music of his own, but also introduced other artful, progressive artists including Randy Stonehill, Daniel Amos, Steve Scott, Tom Howard, Mark Heard, Chris Eaton (Lyrix) and others.

Unlike the safe, southern gospel influenced Christian records of the mid-’70s, Norman’s albums were richly layered in the best tradition of acts like The Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Elton John and Crosby, Stills and Nash, with a dark, apocalyptic streak. His message engaged the culture with authenticity and conviction, and his imagination articulated the disconnectedness felt by so many people in the aftermath of the ’60s.

Odd and controversial business practices and broken personal relationships would bring about the end of his Solid Rock Records imprint and cause friction between Norman and some of his closest friends. As Christian music came into its own, he sent himself into a sort of exile. He emerged occasionally, often with surprising stories of personal injuries and even conspiracies. But for the most part, he spent the last two decades of his life communicating directly with his die-hard fans and performing solo acoustic concerts around the world in small venues.

He released a few new projects and re-assembled his classics for release through his website, larrynorman.com. Occasional festival appearances were rare treats for the faithful fans, but he was so far outside the mainstream that most of today’s Christian music fans have absolutely no idea who Larry Norman is.

The fire he fanned continues to burn to this day. Much of the current faith-fueled music scene can trace its existence all the way back to this lanky San Jose kid with the quizzical face, the ripped blue jeans and the simple message that Jesus loves us. His reach extends well into the mainstream where he was admired by artists like U2, John Mellancamp, Bob Dylan and alternative/punk legend Frank Black of Pixies fame. Black, with his ’90s band The Catholics, covered Norman’s song “Six Sixty Six” and frequently went out of his way to laud his impact. In a statement issued the day after Norman’s death, Black called the singer “The most Christ-like man I ever knew.”

In 2002, when U2’s Bono visited Nashville to speak with Christian artists about his DATA campaign, the only artist he specifically asked about was Larry Norman. Norman couldn’t make that trip, so Bono visited him on the road later that year.

His flaws were many, and unfortunately, often kept him at more than arm’s length from the industry he inadvertently helped create. But in time, most of his harshest critics accepted that despite his faults, maybe because of them, he was an amazing person who had given the Church an incredible gift. One-time protégée and best friend Randy Stonehill had distanced himself from Norman for over 20 years following deep personal conflict between the two. In 2001, they reconciled, reuniting onstage at Cornerstone.

Norman struggled with heart disease for most of the last decade. On Sunday, Feb. 24, 2008 his struggle ended. He died peacefully. He was 60. It is certainly no overstatement to say Larry Norman is to Christian music what John Lennon is to rock & roll or Bob Dylan is to folk music. His contributions deserve to be discovered by future generations, and his enduring legacy includes the fantastic truth that despite his personal weakness and frailty, God used him to accomplish amazing things.
