WOODY WEDNESDAY Woody Allen’s funniest scene in “Play it again Sam” deals with the meaning of life

I have written about Woody Allen and the meaning of life several times before. King Solomon took a long look at this issue in the Book of Ecclesiastes and so did Kerry Livgren in his song “Dust in the Wind” for the rock band Kansas in 1978. He later put his faith in Christ.

Here is what he says:

Allan: That’s quite a lovely Jackson Pollock, isn’t it?

Museum Girl: Yes, it is.

Allan: What does it say to you?

Museum Girl: It restates the negativeness of the universe. The hideous lonely emptiness of existence. Nothingness. The predicament of Man forced to live in a barren, Godless eternity like a tiny flame flickering in an immense void with nothing but waste, horror and degradation, forming a useless bleak straitjacket in a black absurd cosmos.

Allan: What are you doing Saturday night?

Museum Girl: Committing suicide.

Allan: What about Friday night?

With Moonlight, Woody Allen continues his jaunt around Europe, after having made a stop in the States for the Oscar-winningcontemporary dramedy, Blue Jasmine. This new comedy – shot on location in the South of France – is set in the 1920s, where Stanley (Firth) makes a living by pretending to be an Asian magician (not exactly an admirable profession, even back then…), who debunks fake seers and mediums for a living. However, the cynical Stanley may’ve met his match at last, when he crosses paths with a young, sharp-witted, American spiritualist named Sophie (Stone).

Thematically, it sounds like Magic in the Moonlight covers similar ground as that explored in previous Allen films, by pitting Firth’s skeptic against Stone’s more opened-minded counterpart. The cast is a typical Allen movie collection of acclaimed character actors – Jacki Weaver (Silver Linings Playbook), Oscar-winner Marcia Gay Harden (The Newsroom), and Eileen Atkins (Beautiful Creatures) among their ranks. Combine that with what appears to be fine chemistry between the film’s charming leads (judging by the trailer), and it seems safe to assume that Allen’s latest film ought to please most of his steadfast fans.

If Woody Allen films aren’t your bag, though, you can also just wait to catch Firth in Matthew Vaughn’s upcoming super-spy comic book movie, Kingsman: The Secret Service. Meanwhile, Stone will make appearances in such upcoming 2014 flicks as the Hollywood satire Birdman and the still-untitled new Cameron Crowe rom-com (based on his old Deep Tiki script). Allen is seemingly as taken with the young woman as everyone else is, seeing how he’s already cast Stone opposite Joaquin Phoenix for his planned 2015 movie release.

WOODY WEDNESDAY Woody Allen on the meaning of life and why should we even go on

I have written about Woody Allen and the meaning of life several times before. King Solomon took a long look at this issue in the Book of Ecclesiastes and so did Kerry Livgren in his song “Dust in the Wind” for the rock band Kansas in 1978. He later put his faith in Christ.

I have spent alot of time talking about Woody Allen films on this blog and looking at his worldview. He has a hopeless, meaningless, nihilistic worldview that believes we are going to turn to dust and there is no afterlife. Even though he has this view he has taken the opportunity to look at the weaknesses of his own secular view. I salute him for doing that. That is why I have returned to his work over and over and presented my own Christian worldview as an alternative.

My interest in Woody Allen is so great that I have a “Woody Wednesday” on my blog www.thedailyhatch.org every week. Also I have done over 30 posts on the historical characters mentioned in his film “Midnight in Paris.” (Salvador Dali, Ernest Hemingway,T.S.Elliot,  Cole Porter,Paul Gauguin,  Luis Bunuel, and Pablo Picasso were just a few of the characters.)

“Blue Jasmine” takes on so much it’s a wonder it works, and yet it works beautifully.

In Woody Allen’s latest film, he explores the delusion of entitlement, the bond and dissonance between sisters, the ever-present threat of infidelity. He parallels the lives of high-finance hucksters and embraces the low expectations of the working class. He plants romantic obsession and social desperation in the same small apartment.

All of this is built around a central character and performance that would have resonated as effectively a hundred or a thousand years ago as it does now. Jasmine, as played by sure Oscar nominee Cate Blanchett, is the empress fallen from her throne, awaiting her own re-ascendance to power — nervously trying to hold her regal demeanor together even as reality conspires to strip her further.

We meet Jasmine — it’s a name she invented for herself — as she’s flying into San Francisco, fleeing financial ruin and disgrace in New York City. She’s coming to stay with her sister — both girls were adopted — Ginger (Sally Hawkins), who’s living a decidedly blue-collar life with two young sons in an apartment.

Jasmine is, of course, aghast at the apartment and the noisy kids and at Ginger’s latest romantic companion, a mechanic named Chili (Bobby Cannavale) who seems like a carbon copy of Ginger’s former husband (Andrew Dice Clay).

As Jasmine stumbles into Ginger’s world, she flashes back to her own former life. She met financier Hal (Alec Baldwin) on Cape Cod when she was young, they married before she finished college, and she became immersed in a life of absurd luxury — spacious apartment in Manhattan, lavish estate in the Hamptons, traveling the world bedecked in diamonds.

We understand early on that Hal has been brought down mightily; the details of his fall come out as Jasmine continues her flashbacks. In the meantime, aided by much vodka and a variety of prescriptions, Jasmine decides she’d like to be an interior designer, a degree she can earn through computer courses. But first she needs to learn how to use a computer, so she takes, and struggles with, a basic class.

Elsewhere Ginger, egged on by Jasmine, begins to question her relationship with Chili, and strikes up an affair with a sound engineer (Louis C.K.). Meanwhile Jasmine is forced by circumstance to work as a receptionist for a would-be philandering dentist (Michael Stuhlbarg). And then she meets the man of her dreams (Peter Sarsgaard), ready to sweep her back to the social standing and wealth she sincerely believes she deserves.

This is Woody Allen, so “Blue Jasmine,” for all its tragedy, is infused with lots of humor, usually delivered simply through the characters’ personalities. Nobody’s telling jokes but so much of what these people do is simply, humanly, silly.

Still, as Jasmine’s story is revealed, and as Blanchett manages the fragile mask of her character’s sanity, the film builds to a mighty emotional pitch. By the time the empress has no clothes you want to buy her at least a robe.

The ensemble cast is simply delicious, with Cannavale and Hawkins also worthy Oscar nominees, and everyone hitting their marks magnificently.

Of course, there are Woody quirks. Everyone in San Francisco seems to be from New York City, and only Woody would see learning how to use a computer as a momentous task. In the overall film, though, these come off as endearing Woodyisms.

Has there ever been a filmmaker this productive in his eighth decade of life? Since turning 70 in 2005, Allen has released “Match Point,” “Vicky Cristina Barcelona,” “Midnight in Paris” and now “Blue Jasmine,” all among the best of his 44 feature films.

“Jasmine” may be his most daring and pointed film yet, in some ways an allegory of America itself. Please, keep going sir.

I have spent alot of time talking about Woody Allen films on this blog and looking at his worldview. He has a hopeless, meaningless, nihilistic worldview that believes we are going to turn to dust and there is no afterlife. Even though he has this view he has taken the opportunity to look at the weaknesses of his own secular view. I salute him for doing that. That is why I have returned to his work over and over and presented my own Christian worldview as an alternative.

My interest in Woody Allen is so great that I have a “Woody Wednesday” on my blog www.thedailyhatch.org every week. Also I have done over 30 posts on the historical characters mentioned in his film “Midnight in Paris.” (Salvador Dali, Ernest Hemingway,T.S.Elliot,  Cole Porter,Paul Gauguin,  Luis Bunuel, and Pablo Picasso were just a few of the characters.)

It’s all about Cate. Blue Jasmine, Woody Allen’s latest, is a loose reworking of Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire. It’s narratively uneven but the occasional lapses of focus are rescued by Cate Blanchett’s riveting lead performance. The actress’ work here is so good that it effectively launches the 2014 Oscar nomination season. It’s hard to imagine Blanchett not being acknowledged by the Academy for her work here, especially considering AMPAS’ fondness for the writer/director.

In actuality, this feels less like “a Woody Allen film” than anything the director has made since Match Point. It’s another case of Allen diversifying both geographically and stylistically. Although the screenplay contains elements of dark comedy and is good for a few (uneasy) laughs, it’s far more serious and less whimsical than Allen’s usual fare. He’s not on autopilot here. And, although the main character has what could euphemistically be called “mental issues,” she doesn’t evidence the usual Allen angst/neuroses. She’s too far off the deep end for that. While Allen’s hometown represents the setting for flashbacks that consume nearly 50% of the running time, the main story transpires in San Francisco, making this the first instance since the 1970s when the filmmaker’s first-unit production has taken place in a U.S. location outside the New York City metro area.

Destitute and disillusioned, Blanchett’s Jasmine arrives in San Francisco to move in with her sister, Ginger (Sally Hawkins). As houseguests go, it’s hard to think of someone worse than Jasmine. After disparaging Ginger’s apartment due to its size and décor, she makes unflattering remarks about her sister’s current boyfriend, Chili (Bobby Cannavale), who, in her opinion, is only a small improvement over her abusive ex-husband, Augie (Andrew Dice Clay).

Facing reality is hard for Jasmine. Once the pampered wife of Wall Street wizard Hal (Alec Baldwin), she has seen her entire life crumble around her. Hal, caught by the FBI for illegal activities, hanged himself rather than face a life prison term, and the government confiscated everything, leaving Jasmine without a home or money. Her only option was to move in with Ginger in a place where she knows no one and in a situation she believes to be beneath her. Circumstances also demand she get a job – something she’s unfamiliar with. “Trophy wife to a crook” isn’t a qualification many employers are in search of.

Jasmine is a brilliantly multi-layered character. Although she’s not an anti-hero in the traditional sense, she does harm wherever she goes, sometimes through ignorance and sometimes because she’s too shallow to care. But she’s a deeply tragic person and we often see this. She’s subject to panic attacks and resembles a drowning woman clutching at straws. The façade she shows to others is brittle and easily shattered; beneath it is a sad and desperate woman.

Allen has surrounded Blanchett with a group of expert supporting players: the always-reliable Sally Hawkins who, like the star, has adopted an American accent; Peter Sarsgaard playing a potential suitor who’s unaware of Jasmine’s past; and Alec Baldwin comfortably essaying the smooth operator whose conniving and infidelity pave the path to his downfall. If there’s a surprise, however, it’s Andrew Dice Clay. Making his first motion picture appearance in more than a decade, the once bad-boy comedian shows both acting chops and screen presence as one half of the role that was Stanley in Streetcar.

The way Allen has chosen to restructure Williams’ play considerably reduces the most memorable aspect of Streetcar: the Blanche/Stanley dynamic. Here, with Stanley split in two (Clay is Ginger’s ex-husband and Bobby Cannivale is her current boyfriend), there’s not much juice in that interaction, and no sexual tension whatsoever. By default, this becomes Blanche/Jasmine’s movie and the narrative drifts aimlessly along with her. Blue Jasmine is an exercise in examining the lead character’s mental degeneration. The end result, a performance-driven character study, offers an experience more akin to what one might expect from the late John Cassavetes than from the still very much alive Woody Allen.

Review of Woody Allen’s latest movie “Blue Jasmine” Part 24


I have spent alot of time talking about Woody Allen films on this blog and looking at his worldview. He has a hopeless, meaningless, nihilistic worldview that believes we are going to turn to dust and there is no afterlife. Even though he has this view he has taken the opportunity to look at the weaknesses of his own secular view. I salute him for doing that. That is why I have returned to his work over and over and presented my own Christian worldview as an alternative.

My interest in Woody Allen is so great that I have a “Woody Wednesday” on my blog www.thedailyhatch.org every week. Also I have done over 30 posts on the historical characters mentioned in his film “Midnight in Paris.” (Salvador Dali, Ernest Hemingway,T.S.Elliot,  Cole Porter,Paul Gauguin,  Luis Bunuel, and Pablo Picasso were just a few of the characters.)

Today we are looking at a review of Woody Allen’s latest movie Blue Jasmine.

You can be forgiven if at first you believe the well-dressed woman bending the ear of her neighbor on a plane, then through the terminal, then into baggage claim, is just a rank narcissist.

“TMI! Too much information!” you think on behalf of the courteous listener as Jasmine recounts how she fell for her husband, Hal, to the romantic strains of “Blue Moon.”

In “Blue Jasmine,” Woody Allen’s latest timely and prickly drama, Jasmine is so much more than mere egotist. As inhabited to the core by Cate Blanchett, she represents denial and complicity, shame and haughtiness and fear — unbridled, whinnying fear.

That’s for starters.

Quite a bit has already been written about Blanchett’s performance catapulting Jasmine into the pantheon of Allen’s most indelible female characters. And as the unraveling wife of a disgraced financier (Alec Baldwin), the Australian actress has become front-runner in the very early legs of the race for Oscar.

“Blue Jasmine” also lands high on Allen’s list of telling ethics tales: It is not as complete as “Crimes and Misdemeanors” and arguably not as nuanced as “Match Point.”

Jasmine will repeat the story of her fateful love affair again and again once she arrives, designer hat in bejeweled hand, at her sister’s modest apartment in San Francisco.

Jasmine resembles one of those ’50s wives — widowed or dumped — who find themselves with nary a skill to survive, or at least not in the manner they’d grown accustomed.

Sally Hawkins portrays Jasmine’s only sibling. Divorced, Ginger lives with her two young sons. A supermarket worker, she dates Chili (Bobby Cannavale). She’s kindly, if cowed, in her big sister’s presence.

In moving back and forth between New York and San Francisco — before the debacle that robbed Jasmine of her status and after — Allen fills in the parts Jasmine’s ever-flowing narrative washes over.

Men are central, as rescuers true and false and companions imperfect but loyal. Peter Sarsgaard plays David, a diplomat who might just save Jasmine from her low circumstances, if not from herself.

Baldwin is near perfect as Hal. He’s a cad. He’s a charmer. Allen also gets fine turns from Andrew Dice Clay as Ginger’s ex, Augie, and comic Louis C.K. as Al, the man Ginger could see herself trading up for.

WOODY WEDNESDAY Review of Woody Allen’s latest movie “Blue Jasmine” Part 23

I have spent alot of time talking about Woody Allen films on this blog and looking at his worldview. He has a hopeless, meaningless, nihilistic worldview that believes we are going to turn to dust and there is no afterlife. Even though he has this view he has taken the opportunity to look at the weaknesses of his own secular view. I salute him for doing that. That is why I have returned to his work over and over and presented my own Christian worldview as an alternative.

My interest in Woody Allen is so great that I have a “Woody Wednesday” on my blog www.thedailyhatch.org every week. Also I have done over 30 posts on the historical characters mentioned in his film “Midnight in Paris.” (Salvador Dali, Ernest Hemingway,T.S.Elliot,  Cole Porter,Paul Gauguin,  Luis Bunuel, and Pablo Picasso were just a few of the characters.)

Actress delivers Oscar-worthy performance as suddenly broke socialite in film that marks director’s return from Europe.

Writer-director Woody Allen creates a new tragic American heroine for a greedy, post-financial-collapse age with San Francisco-set Blue Jasmine, including a stunning performance from Cate Blanchett that will almost certainly earn awards attention.

There’s still a hint of Allen’s beloved New York in the story of Blanchett’s emotionally wrung-out Manhattan socialite, Jasmine. More social satire than dark comedy, here is a woman who has created such an elaborate fiction to smooth over the cracks in her life — right down to her made-up name — that she even includes a theme song: “Blue Moon.”

She’s an anachronism. Nobody has talked like Jasmine since the haughty screen stars of the ’40s. She frets aloud about where her next Stoli martini is coming from while wrinkling her perfectly sculpted nose at the very thought of living a mundane life.

Dressed in the Chanel she managed to hide from creditors and flying in a style she can’t afford but believes is among her basic human rights, Jasmine is hardly stoic about her social and psychological ruin after her Bernie Madoff-like husband, Hal (a seamlessly smarmy Alec Baldwin), went down for the massive investment fraud that funded their rarefied life.

She didn’t suspect a thing, Jasmine insists as she gobbles another Xanax. She was a victim, too, thanks to her empty-headedness in matters of commerce. How could she have known?

She’s not the only victim, not that this matters to Jasmine. Take her sister Ginger (Happy-Go-Lucky’s Sally Hawkins), who, along with then husband Augie (Andrew Dice Clay, nicely handling a straight dramatic role as an earnest lunch bucket toter), was taken to the cleaners by Hal.

Circumstances mean the disgraced Jasmine has to leave New York for the West Coast, moving in with Ginger and sharing her cramped apartment over a Mexican café. Plucky Ginger works at a local market, raising her two rambunctious sons. She’s forgiven her self-absorbed sister — almost.

Allen, in one of his best films in years (not quite on the level of Midnight in Paris but still pleasing), flips the action between past and present, with flashbacks of a soignée Jasmine being gifted with jewels and hosting A-list dinner parties with her beloved Hal skipping to the now, as Jasmine considers the humiliation of taking a job selling shoes. “One minute you’re hosting women and the next you’re measuring their shoe size!” she wails.

Ginger’s new boyfriend, Chili (Bobby Cannavale), sniffs a phoney when he meets Jasmine but holds his tongue, even though he was the one who was supposed to be moving in with Ginger, not some neurotic nut job from Manhattan. Jasmine has no such reservations, putting Chili in the “loser” column with the long-gone Augie.

Still, Chili is enough of a good guy to help Jasmine land a job as a dental receptionist, an idea which horrifies her. How many reminders must she endure of her fall? She gives in, but more humiliation waits as she has to fend off the clumsy advances of her boss, lonely dentist Dr. Flicker (A Serious Man’s Michael Stuhlbarg).

That side plot pops up as an unnecessary and unwelcome break in the flow of Blue Jasmine, one of a few missteps here from Allen, who can’t resist penning dialogue that sounds like it was cribbed from his analyst’s notes.

Jasmine wants something “substantial” in her life, whether it’s work or love. And there is a chance for that with handsome Dwight (Peter Sarsgaard, again showing his chameleon-like talents), a moneyed, politically ambitious man she meets at a party. He could help make that a reality.

Blue Jasmine marks Allen’s filmmaking return to America. While it isn’t as complete asMidnight in Paris or Vicky Cristina Barcelona, it holds its own thanks to Blanchett’s stunning take on Jasmine, whose incandescent and ongoing meltdowns are mesmerizing to behold.

“There’s only so much a person can stand before they take to the streets and start screaming,” she mutters.

In his 48th feature as writer/director, Woody Allen seems to have been inspired by Tennessee Williams’ timeless tale of class, booze and sexual tension, A Streetcar Named Desire. Cate Blanchett plays Jasmine, a woman who was born of a different name and led a posh life until everything came crashing down. Financially broke and mentally broken, Jasmine leaves Manhattan and heads to San Francisco to stay with her grocery clerk sister Ginger (Sally Hawkins).

Ginger has not one but two Stanley Kowalski’s in her life: Augie, her ex-husband (Andrew Dice Clay), and current hot-tempered fiancé, the too obviously named Chili (Boardwalk Empire‘s Bobby Cannavale). Yet Blanchett’s performance is more than just a reimagining of Blanche DuBois for the 21st century.

Jasmine rings true as an observation of our current economic meltdown more than just a hot and steamy single gal. By far Allen’s best drama in years, Blue Jasmine is anchored with a genuinely unhinged lead performance. To lighten the mood, there are some funny moments too (like Louis C.K.!), but what lingers is just how lost Jasmine has become.

1. Cate Blanchett: Best Actress Front-Runner. Jasmine talks to herself a lot. Sometimes, you’ll think she’s just rambling on to a fellow passenger on a flight. Blanchett so accurately convinces us of “her own world” that the sudden realization of her instability unnerves. Her fits of mania lead to moments where she just stares off into space–not unlike a captive audience member. (What exactly does she see that’s so fascinating?) By all accounts, Jasmine is a horrible snob, yet Blanchett let’s us see her disdain for “menial labor” as a defensive move. Her wealthy ways have been ripped away. Worse, she can’t stop thinking about that old life…

2. Time Jumps. In Midnight in Paris, Owen Wilson took fanciful trips back in time to the era of Fitzgerald and Hemmingway. Here, things are not so fanciful, as Jasmine keeps thinking back to her life (half the film is flashbacks) when she was married to a man who gave her everything by stealing other people’s money. Alec Baldwin makes for quite the schemer as a financial tycoon/criminal.

3. Allen’s Best Drama Since Match Point. Even the fiercest of Allen’s fans usually name his comedies as the auteur’s best work. Crimes and Misdemeanors and more recently, Match Point were excellent more serious-minded studies of male egos. Jasmine also has quite the ego. Do we see a pattern here? Anyone, it seems, can lose everything for essentially, nothing.

4. Louis C.K.’s Hero: Woody Allen. Allen has plans for his next feature to be a buddy flick with himself and Louis. For now, the other comedian who does it all plays a seemingly nice guy who meets Ginger at a party. Since Allen famously never does DVD commentaries maybe Louis will step in for a sure to be unforgettable 90-minute stand-up routine?

5. The Diceman Returneth! Introducing Dice Jr.! Andrew Dice Clay is Ginger’s boorish ex, Augie. In a clever move for the former bad dude of comedy, Clay’s character acts as kind of Greek chorus for the guilt that Jasmine suffers. Clay’s earnest speeches resonate. Ginger’s new man is Chili who as played by Cannavale looks and acts like the former comedian’s ’90s self. Inspired casting.

WOODY WEDNESDAY Review of Woody Allen’s latest movie “Blue Jasmine” Part 21

I have spent alot of time talking about Woody Allen films on this blog and looking at his worldview. He has a hopeless, meaningless, nihilistic worldview that believes we are going to turn to dust and there is no afterlife. Even though he has this view he has taken the opportunity to look at the weaknesses of his own secular view. I salute him for doing that. That is why I have returned to his work over and over and presented my own Christian worldview as an alternative.

My interest in Woody Allen is so great that I have a “Woody Wednesday” on my blog www.thedailyhatch.org every week. Also I have done over 30 posts on the historical characters mentioned in his film “Midnight in Paris.” (Salvador Dali, Ernest Hemingway,T.S.Elliot,  Cole Porter,Paul Gauguin,  Luis Bunuel, and Pablo Picasso were just a few of the characters.)

Today we are looking at a review of Woody Allen’s latest movie Blue Jasmine.

MOVIE REVIEW: ‘Blue Jasmine’

There’s something comfortingly old-fashioned about a Woody Allen picture. Characters still talk of nervous breakdowns, hot jazz jauntily sets scenes, and Google doesn’t seem to exist.

And thank goodness for that last one. If a certain character had done a simple Internet search on another — and you will wonder why he doesn’t — there would be no point to “Blue Jasmine,” which turns out to be a rather un-Woody Allen-esque film and one of this summer’s greatest pleasures.

The mood is antiquated, but the story is ripped from (relatively recent) headlines. The delicate Jasmine (Cate Blanchett) flies from New York to San Francisco to spend some time with her much warmer sister, Ginger (Sally Hawkins). Not because Jasmine misses her sibling, or because she wants a vacation on the West Coast. Jasmine doesn’t have any choice — or any other place to live. The woman once known for lavish dinner parties in her beautiful Park Avenue home no longer has the home or even the dinnerware. Her husband, Hal (Alec Baldwin), was indicted by the FBI and given a long prison sentence for Bernie Madoff-like crimes.

Jasmine, claiming cluelessness, escaped punishment — formal punishment, that is. Moving into her blue-collar sister’s small apartment and being forced to find a job for the first time in her life make San Francisco feel like a prison. Instead of an orange jumpsuit, though, she wears elegant, expensive ensembles and carries an Hermes bag. (One can’t sell all one’s possessions, after all.)

Which is how, despite clearly being on the edge of another breakdown, Jasmine catches the attention of Dwight (Peter Sarsgaard). He’s a diplomat planning to transition to elected office, which means he needs a tasteful wife who’s a good hostess and knowing conversationalist. After “slaving away” at work she first considered too “menial” — it’s simply an office job — and still unable to afford her own place, let alone a better brand of the vodka she drinks straight, Jasmine finds the idea of marrying back into money irresistible. (And Mr. Sarsgaard is rather more charming than Mr. Baldwin, as smooth as he is.) We see a less broken Jasmine in flashbacks, which also explain how Hal lost the life savings of Ginger and her first husband, Augie (Andrew Dice Clay).

You’ve paused just now, and with good reason: Foul-mouthed “comedian” Andrew Dice Clay has been cast in a movie by one of America’s most philosophic filmmakers? Mr. Clay hasn’t acted on the big or small screen for over a decade, except for playing himself in “Entourage.” This doubter had to admit defeat soon after the declasse Augie appeared, however. It’s brilliant casting.

Almost as good is Bobby Cannavale as Ginger’s current squeeze, Chili, who might be a slight step up from Augie but is no less repellent to Jasmine. It’s Ginger, of course, not the neurotic Jasmine, who gets all the sexual satisfaction in this film. At the party where her sister met the politico, Ginger makes her own connection, less well-heeled but more Ginger’s speed (i.e., fast) in Al (another, funnier, comedian, Louis C.K.).

Miss Hawkins, an actress only director Mike Leigh seems to appreciate properly, discards her English accent for her marvelous turn as Ginger. But the story, and the film, belong to the title character, and Miss Blanchett, not unexpectedly, delivers. The look on her face when Chili goes in for a welcome kiss is almost worth the price of admission alone.

“Blue Jasmine” is quite unlike most of Mr. Allen’s previous movies, but it has his trademark mix of comedy and crisis. There’s no “Woody Allen character” here, as is usually the case with even those of his films in which he doesn’t appear. “Blue Jasmine” plays out, finally, as a mystery whose secrets are slowly (and surprisingly) revealed as those flashbacks come ever closer to the present.

Mr. Allen hasn’t made a film in America for a few years, but he still understands his native land and some types of its inhabitants in a way no one else does. He might know little about today’s technology, but Woody Allen has made a funny and knowing film about the other ways we live now.
