Open letter to President Obama (Part 371) Francis Schaeffer in his own words to Christians “Marking the Watershed” Part 1

This letter was emailed to White House on 1-8-13.

Dear Mr. President,

I know that you receive 20,000 letters a day and that you actually read 10 of them every day. I really do respect you for trying to get a pulse on what is going on out here.

I truly believe that many of the problems we have today in the USA are due to the advancement of humanism in the last few decades in our society. Ronald Reagan appointed the evangelical Dr. C. Everett Koop to the position of Surgeon General in his administration. He partnered with Dr. Francis Schaeffer in making the video below. It is very valuable information for Christians to have.  Actually I have included a video below that includes comments from him on this subject.

Francis Schaeffer: “Whatever Happened to the Human Race” (Episode 1) ABORTION OF THE HUMAN RACE

____________

The 45 minute video above is from the film series created from Francis Schaeffer’s book “Whatever Happened to the Human Race?” with Dr. C. Everett Koop. This book  really helped develop my political views concerning abortion, infanticide, and youth euthanasia, and it gave me a good understanding of those issues.
Christians need to take time to read the books and watch the films by Francis Schaeffer. Since the election time in November of 2012 there has been a renewed interest in the works Francis Schaeffer in the Christian community. One of the most challenging papers Schaeffer wrote was the chapter called

Marking the Watershed  which is Chapter 2 from The Great Evangelical Disaster (Crossway Books, 1984). In this chapter he discusses subjects such as Freedom with Form or Chaos,Relativism or God’s Absolutes, The New Neo-Orthodoxy, An Inner Feeling or Objective Truth, Cultural Infiltration, Hedonism, Bending the Bible, Confrontation and The Mark of our Age. These are all subjects that Christians should think about. What a difference it would make if more Christians took this Biblical worldview and lived it out in their lives. Below is a portion of that chapter.

Chapter 2 from The Great Evangelical Disaster (Crossway Books, 1984)

Part 1

Schaeffer rightly points out that previously Christians all accepted the inerrancy and trustworthy nature of the Bible but today many Christians do not. Schaeffer encourages Christians to return to the traditional respect for the Bible’s accuracy.

A Watershed

Not far from where we live in Switzerland is a high ridge of rock with a valley on both sides. One time I was there when there was snow on the ground along that ridge. The snow was lying there unbroken, a seeming unity. However, that unity was an illusion, for it lay along a great divide; it lay along a watershed. One portion of the snow when it melted would flow into one valley. The snow which lay close beside would flow into another valley when it melted.

Now it just so happens on that particular ridge that the melting snow which flows down one side of that ridge goes down into a valley, into a small river, and then down into the Rhine River. The Rhine then flows on through Germany and the water ends up in the cold waters of the North Sea. The water from the snow that started out so close along that watershed on the other side of the ridge, when this snow melts, drops off sharply down the ridge into the Rhone Valley. This water flows into Lac Leman – or as it is known in the English-speaking world, Lake Geneva – and then goes down below that into the Rhone River which flows through France and into the warm waters of the Mediterranean.

The snow lies along that watershed, unbroken, as a seeming unity. But when it melts, where it ends in its destinations is literally a thousand miles apart. That is a watershed. That is what a watershed is. A watershed divides. A clear line can be drawn between what seems at first to be the same or at least very close, but in reality ends in very different situations. In a watershed there is a line.

A House Divided

What does this illustration have to do with the evangelical world today? I would suggest that it is a very accurate description of what is happening. Evangelicals today are facing a watershed concerning the nature of biblical inspiration and authority. It is a watershed issue in very much the same sense as described in the illustration. Within evangelicalism there are a growing number who are modifying their views on the inerrancy of the Bible so that the full authority of Scripture is completely undercut. But it is happening in very subtle ways. Like the snow lying side-by-side on the ridge, the new views on biblical authority often seem at first glance not to be so very far from what evangelicals, until just recently, have always believed. But also, like the snow lying side-by-side on the ridge, the new views when followed consistently end up a thousand miles apart.

What may seem like a minor difference at first, in the end makes all the difference in the world. It makes all the difference, as we might expect, in things pertaining to theology, doctrine and spiritual matters, but it also makes all the difference in things pertaining to the daily Christian life and how we as Christians are to relate to the world around us. In other words, compromising the full authority of Scripture eventually affects what it means to be a Christian theologically and how we live in the full spectrum of human life.

There is a sense in which the problem of full biblical authority is fairly recent. Up until the last two hundred years or so virtually every Christian believed in the complete inerrancy of the Bible, or in the equivalent of this expressed in similar terms. This was true both before the Reformation and after. The problem with the pre-Reformation medieval church was not so much that it did not hold to belief in an inerrant Bible as that it allowed the whole range of nonbiblical theological ideas and superstitions to grow up within the church. These ideas were then placed alongside of the Bible and even over the Bible, so that the Bible’s authority and teaching were subordinated to nonbiblical teachings. This resulted in the abuses which led to the Reformation. But note that the problem was not that the pre-Reformation church did not believe in the inerrancy of Scripture; the problem was that it did not practice the inerrancy of Scripture, because it subordinated the Bible to its fallible teachings.

Thus it is important to note that, up until recent times, (1) belief in the inerrancy of Scripture (even when it was not practiced fully) and (2) claiming to be a Christian, were seen as two things which necessarily went together. If you were a Christian, you also trusted in the complete reliability of God’s written Word, the Bible. If you did not believe the Bible, you did not claim to be a Christian. But no one, until the past two hundred years or so, tried to say, “I am a Christian, but at the same time I believe the Bible to be full of errors.” As incredible as this would have seemed to Christians in the past, and as incredible as this may seem to Bible-believing Christians today, this is what is now happening within the evangelical world.

This problem which started some two hundred years ago has within the past two decades come to the forefront among evangelicals. It is a problem which I (and others) began to address publicly in the mid-sixties, again in the seventies and repeatedly in the eighties. We can be thankful for the many who have taken a strong stand on this; but we must also say, sadly, that the problem continues and is growing. Evangelicalism is divided, deeply divided. And it will not be helpful or truthful for anyone to deny this. It is something that will not simply go away, and it cannot be swept under the rug. What follows in this chapter grows out of the study, thinking, and prayer, often with tears, which I have done concerning this watershed issue during my whole life as a Christian, but especially as I have dealt with this in my speaking and writing during the past two decades. The following, then, is a restatement on further development as a unified whole of my work in this area.

Our Passover

Tonight we’re grateful to celebrate Passover with some new friends, many of whom have not experienced it before.

Passover 2013 Passover, 2013

Since before our eldest daughter was old enough to remember, we have celebrated Passover together as a family.  The tradition is now cherished, with fond memories, by all of us.  It began in 1988, our second year of marriage, when a Messianic church held a seder, open to the public, at the local Denny’s.  Candace and I eagerly seized on the opportunity to participate and learn more, and resolved to make a Messianic seder a regular tradition.  Unlike some strands of Messianic Christianity, we were not motivated by any sense of obligation to biblical law; our conviction then as now was that there is one covenant of grace uniting both Testaments, and uniting Hebrew and Christian believers into one people of God.  We saw celebrating Passover together and with our children not as an observance of law, but as a celebration of God’s grace through countless generations.

As a young Christian, I was much taken by books like Peter Gillquist, The Physical Side of Being Spiritual,, Francis Schaeffer, The New Super-Spirituality,, Udo Middelmann, Pro existence, Edith Schaeffer, Hidden Art, Hans Rookmaaker, Art Needs No Justification, or Ranald Macauley & Jerram Barrs, Being Human: The Nature of Spiritual Experience, all of which encouraged thinking about how God loves ordinary, physical and tangible things, and uses them to embody his presence with us.  The Incarnation provides the paradigm for creation, and the sacraments are exemplary of his hidden presence with us through other people and all that he has made.  For me, this longstanding interest in God’s presence mediated through creaturely life and physical things was part of the reason I wanted to better understand the Hebrew celebration of Passover.   It also didn’t hurt that I was an avid reader of Francis and Edith Schaeffer’s other books, including Christianity is Jewish which taught me this poem:  “How odd of God to choose the Jew.  But odder still are those who choose the Jewish God and hate the Jew.”  When their daughter, Susan Schaeffer Macauley, wrote a book on pedagogy, For the Children’s Sake, I was immediately attracted to the Charlotte Mason tradition it articulated, even before we had children of our own.  As I’ve noted here before, Mason likewise emphasized the pedagogical value of direct and ordinary experience.  So it seemed natural to us that a regular celebration of Passover would impart to our children, as well as to us, a deepened understanding of the one covenant of grace revealed in the Old and New Testaments.

Christians may expect many benefits from the celebration of Passover. Our children may learn what grace looks like in a multi-sensory, participatory manner, repeated throughout the short years of their lives with us.  But even if we do not have children of our own, celebrating Passover may help us develop a greater sympathy toward our Jewish brothers and sisters, particularly in the post-Holocaust epoch in which we live, when the need to actively repudiate anti-Semitism remains an urgent imperative (sadly, even within some churches).  And, in addition, experiencing this Hebrew tradition promises to provide us with a clearer understanding of our Lord, as we learn to see him through non-Latinized eyes:

“We put a Gentile mask on the face of Jesus…. We need to go to school with the People of Israel, as it were, in order to share with them the training they were given by God through many, many centuries until a matrix of understanding and thought and worship was prepared in Israel appropriate for the reception of God’s ultimate self-revelation in Jesus Christ.”  Thomas F. Torrance, in The Witness of the Jews to God, ed. David W. Torrance (1982), p. 97.

After all, Jesus grew up celebrating Passover year after year, and chose that occasion for his own Last Supper.  Any Christian’s understanding of the eucharist will surely be deepened by a greater appreciation of how the first disciples experienced Christ’s final Passover meal.

Practicalities

Rubin, Messianic Passover HaggadahIn figuring out the logistics for this new family tradition, we relied upon The Messianic Passover Seder Preparation Guide by Barry Rubin.  For every participant around the table, we obtain a copy of Rubin’s Messianic Passover Haggadah to follow along with during the seder.

Because the meal is a major undertaking, we celebrate Passover at whatever time is most convenient for us during the month prior to Easter, so it has become a waymark on our Lenten journey.  The Passover meal has become for us a part of spring in the same way that fall and winter wouldn’t be the same without Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner. When we were diagnosed with an allergy to gluten, Candace was not deterred, but quickly perfected the art of making gluten-free matzah and other Passover recipes!

Tips:  Identify beforehand six readers, in addition to the leader and the child who asks the four questions.  If a pastor is present, ask him or her to read the Leader texts from p. 27 through the top of p. 29 (the Cup of Redemption, after the meal).  So that all may eat or drink together, mention at the beginning that the leader will indicate when to drink the cup or eat the matzah, since there are times when either might be poured or distributed and held a little while. Sometimes, to accommodate extra guests, we set up several tables where each table has its own seder plate, pitcher of grape juice, afikomen and ransom (a prize of chocolate or jelly beans for the children who recover the afikomen).  Each table will need a designated “father” to point out items on the seder plate, pour the grape juice, etc., and a designated “mother” to light the candles.

While reading Rubin’s edition of the Haggadah, I frequently insert the following additions.  Page numbers are indicated for the 2005 revised edition.  Quotations are from Rabbi Yechiel Eckstein, What Christians Should Know About Jews and Judaism (1984).

Page 3, before paragraph 1:
We begin by reciting the prologue of the 10 Commandments: “I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.” (Exodus 20:2)

Page 3, after paragraph 2:
“You shall tell your son on that day, ‘It is because of what the LORD did for me when I came out of Egypt.’” (Exodus 13:8)

“We retell the story and symbolically relive the events. We are to feel as if we ourselves were just delivered from Egyptian bondage… ‘For God did not redeem our ancestors alone, but us as well.’” (Eckstein, 96)

Page 3, after paragraph 4:
“The Pesach festival bears eloquent testimony that God hears the cries of the oppressed and redeems humanity.  ‘And the people of Israel groaned under their bondage, and cried out for help, and their cry under bondage came up to God. And God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob’ (Exod. 2:23-24). Curiously, although Moses was the key figure in the exodus drama, his name is not mentioned even once in the entire Seder service. For we are not to confuse Moses, the divine instrument of God’s salvation, with God himself. It was God who heard Israel’s cries. It was he who interceded in history to redeem them.” (Eckstein, 103-104)

Page 5, top:
“Let all who are hungry come eat with us.” (Isaiah 55.1-3)

Page 8.
To save time, begin with the leader lifting the basin of water.  Read the passage at the top of the page, from Psalm 24, while the basin is being passed.  Add:
Only Messiah is clean and pure. Only Messiah can truly pray this prayer. Only through Messiah do we participate in worship together tonight.

Page 14, first sentence.
If other families are participating in other tables, change “I” to “the fathers”.

Page 16, (lifting the kharoset, the brown apple mixture). The kharoset represents mortar:
“So they ruthlessly made the people of Israel work as slaves and made their lives bitter with hard service, in mortar and brick, and in all kinds of work in the field. In all their work they ruthlessly made them work as slaves.” (Exodus 1:13–14)

Page 17, before “Leader: The children of Israel…”:
“As we drink the wine, we recline slightly, as was the manner of Roman emperors, to demonstrate our freedom on this day.  Even if we live under conditions of oppression, and are not in fact physically free, we are to feel as if we were. Pesach reminds us that true freedom also involves the inner, spiritual realm. It cannot be externally denied, nor can a condition of slavery and servitude be outwardly imposed.  The physically oppressed must also recline and feel like emperors on Pesach night…. Nothing must stand in the way of fulfilling the mitzvah of feeling free on this holiday. (I have often marveled at how it was humanly possible for Jews living in concentration camps during the holocaust to fulfill this mitzvah of ‘feeling free’ on Pesach. And yet, the amazing testimony to the power of God’s spirit moving within humankind is that many Jews did find the spiritual strength and courage to fulfill it, despite their wretched conditions.)”  (Eckstein, 101)

Page 21, within paragraph 1, after “…slavery of Egypt.”
“When your enemy falls, do not be overjoyed.” (Proverbs 24.17)

Page 24, after paragraph “Leader: Since the Temple…”
Jesus is our sacrificial lamb, sacrificed once for all for us.
“The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29)
“Cleanse out the old leaven that you may be a new lump, as you really are unleavened. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed.” (1Corinthians 5:7)
“He has no need, like those high priests, to offer sacrifices daily, first for his own sins and then for those of the people, since he did this once for all when he offered up himself.” (Hebrews 7:27)

Page 26, end:
Eat desert now also; no additional food after the afikomen.

If a pastor is present, ask him to read the Leader texts here through p. 29 (top).

Page 27, before first “Leader” paragraph:
“For there is one God and one mediator between God and humanity, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all humanity.”  (1 Timothy 2.5)

Page 29, end:
Re Elijah: “It is also customary to pour a fifth cup of wine…. For centuries Jews have poured but not drunk from this fifth cup to symbolize that God’s promise for their return to their homeland remains unfulfilled. It came to be called ‘Elijah’s cup’ since, according to tradition, it is the prophet Elijah who will usher in the Messiah….” (Eckstein, 100)

“And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he said, “Take this, and divide it among yourselves. For I tell you that from now on I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.” (Luke 22:17–18)
“For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.” (1 Corinthians 11:26)

Open letter to President Obama (Part 369) According to Francis Schaeffer, Is there a place for civil disobedience over the issue of abortion?

(This letter was emailed to White House on 12-17-12.)

Dear Mr. President,

I know that you receive 20,000 letters a day and that you actually read 10 of them every day. I really do respect you for trying to get a pulse on what is going on out here.

I truly believe that many of the problems we have today in the USA are due to the advancement of humanism in the last few decades in our society. As you know Ronald Reagan appointed the evangelical Dr. C. Everett Koop to the position of Surgeon General in his administration. Please consider contacting him and asking his opinion concerning humanism. Actually I have included a video below that includes comments from him on this subject.

Francis Schaeffer: “Whatever Happened to the Human Race” (Episode 3) DEATH BY SOMEONE’S CHOICE

Published on Oct 6, 2012 by

The 45 minute video above is from the film series created from Francis Schaeffer’s book “Whatever Happened to the Human Race?” with Dr. C. Everett Koop. This book  really helped develop my political views concerning abortion, infanticide, and youth euthanasia, and it gave me a good understanding of those issues.
I was able to watch Francis Schaeffer deliver a speech on a book he wrote called “A Christian Manifesto” and I heard him in several interviews on it in 1981 and 1982. I listened with great interest since I also read that book over and over again. Below is a portion of one of Schaeffer’s talks  on a crucial subject that is very important today too.
A Christian Manifesto
by Dr. Francis A. Schaeffer
This address was delivered by the late Dr. Schaeffer in 1982 at the Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church, Fort Lauderdale, Florida. It is based on one of his books, which bears the same title.
Is there a place for civil disobedience over the issue of abortion?
—–

All we ask for is what the founding fathers of this country stood and fought and died for, and at the same time, very crucial in all this is standing absolutely for a high view of human life against the snowballing low view of human life of which I have been talking. This thing has been presented under the hypocritical name of choice. What does choice equal? Choice, as I have already shown, means the right to kill for your own selfish desires. To kill human life! That’s what the choice is that we’re being presented with on this other basis.
Now, I come toward the close, and that is that we must recognize something from the Scriptures, and that’s why I had that Scripture read that I had read tonight. When the government negates the law of God, it abrogates its authority. God has given certain offices to restrain chaos in this fallen world, but it does not mean that these offices are autonomous, and when a government commands that which is contrary to the Law of God, it abrogates its authority.
Throughout the whole history of the Christian Church, (and again I wish people knew their history. In A Christian Manifesto I stress what happened in the Reformation in reference to all this) at a certain point, it is not only the privilege but it is the duty of the Christian to disobey the government. Now that’s what the founding fathers did when they founded this country. That’s what the early Church did. That’s what Peter said. You heard it from the Scripture: “Should we obey man?… rather than God?” That’s what the early Christians did.
Occasionally — no, often, people say to me, “But the early Church didn’t practice civil disobedience.” Didn’t they? You don’t know your history again. When those Christians that we all talk about so much allowed themselves to be thrown into the arena, when they did that, from their view it was a religious thing. They would not worship anything except the living God. But you must recognize from the side of the Roman state, there was nothing religious about it at all — it was purely civil. The Roman Empire had disintegrated until the only unity it had was its worship of Caesar. You could be an atheist; you could worship the Zoroastrian religion… You could do anything. They didn’t care. It was a civil matter, and when those Christians stood up there and refused to worship Caesar, from the side of the state, they were rebels. They were in civil disobedience and they were thrown to the beasts. They were involved in civil disobedience, as much as your brothers and sisters in the Soviet Union are. When the Soviet Union says that, by law, they cannot tell their children, even in their home about Jesus Christ, they must disobey and they get sent off to the mental ward or to Siberia. It’s exactly the same kind of civil disobedience that’s represented in a very real way by the thing I am wearing on my lapel tonight.
Every appropriate legal and political governmental means must be used. “The final bottom line”– I have invented this term in A Christian Manifesto. I hope the Christians across this country and across the world will really understand what the Bible truly teaches: The final bottom line! The early Christians, every one of the reformers (and again, I’ll say in A Christian Manifesto I go through country after country and show that there was not a single place with the possible exception of England, where the Reformation was successful, where there wasn’t civil disobedience and disobedience to the state), the people of the Reformation, the founding fathers of this country, faced and acted in the realization that if there is no place for disobeying the government, that government has been put in the place of the living God. In such a case, the government has been made a false god. If there is no place for disobeying a human government, what government has been made GOD.
Caesar, under some name, thinking of the early Church, has been put upon the final throne. The Bible’s answer is NO! Caesar is not to be put in the place of God and we as Christians, in the name of the Lordship of Christ, and all of life, must so think and act on the appropriate level. It should always be on the appropriate level. We have lots of room to move yet with our court cases, with the people we elect — all the things that we can do in this country. If, unhappily, we come to that place, the appropriate level must also include a disobedience to the state.
If you are not doing that, you haven’t thought it through. Jesus is not really on the throne. God is not central. You have made a false god central. Christ must be the final Lord and not society and not Caesar.
May I repeat the final sentence again? CHRIST MUST BE THE FINAL LORD AND NOT CAESAR AND NOT SOCIETY.

A Psalm for Kermit Gosnell

Many in the world today are taking a long look at the abortion industry because of the May 14, 2013 guilty verdict and life term penalty handed down by a jury (which included 9 out of 12 pro-choice jurors)  to Dr. Kermit Gosnell. During this time of reflection I wanted to put forth some of the pro-life’s best arguments.

In the film series “WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE HUMAN RACE?” the arguments are presented  against abortion (Episode 1),  infanticide (Episode 2),   euthanasia (Episode 3), and then there is a discussion of the Christian versus Humanist worldview concerning the issue of “the basis for human dignity” in Episode 4 and then in the last episode a close look at the truth claims of the Bible.

A Psalm for Kermit Gosnell

I’ve steered clear of commenting on the horrific trial of abortion doctor Kermit Gosnell. I’ve known about the story for some time, but just couldn’t bring myself to focus on the horrors in which he was engaged.

Much has been made of the lack of media coverage. My friends here at Patheos Evangelical have done much to change that. Rightly so.

For those not familiar with the case, I point you here, somewhat reluctantly, because the crimes he allegedly committed against helpless infants is revolting and worthy of the worst punishment known to man.

I mention Gosnell today simply because I came across a Psalm in my daily reading that reminded me of him. It is rare that we get such a clear picture of what God calls a “wicked man” in Scripture. But Gosnell — and his ilk — would certainly seem to qualify.

 A Psalm for Kermit Gosnell

I share this selection from Psalm 10:8-18. And I think this must be the kind of monster David had in mind.

He sits in ambush in the villages; in hiding places he murders the innocent. His eyes stealthily watch for the helpless; he lurks in ambush like a lion in his thicket; he lurks that he may seize the poor; he seizes the poor when he draws him into his net.

The helpless are crushed, sink down, and fall by his might. He says in his heart, “God has forgotten, he has hidden his face, he will never see it.”

Arise, O LORD; O God, lift up your hand; forget not the afflicted.

Why does the wicked renounce God and say in his heart, “You will not call to account”?

But you do see, for you note mischief and vexation, that you may take it into your hands; to you the helpless commits himself; you have been the helper of the fatherless.

Break the arm of the wicked and evildoer; call his wickedness to account till you find none.

The LORD is king forever and ever; the nations perish from his land.

O LORD, you hear the desire of the afflicted; you will strengthen their heart; you will incline your ear to do justice to the fatherless and the oppressed, so that man who is of the earth may strike terror no more. (Ps. 10:8-18)

Eastwooding Richard Dawkins’ Moral Argument Objections

On September 29th, 2012, William Lane Craig participated in the Contending with Christianity’s Critics Conference held at Watermark Community Church in Dallas, TX. In this short clip, Dr. Craig uses the technique of Eastwooding to deal with Richard Dawkins’ attempted refutations of the moral argument for God’s existence.

Francis Schaeffer and  Gospel of Christ in the pages of the Bible

(The Bible is the key in understanding the universe in its form)

Francis and Edith Schaeffer pictured below:

_________________

Life without God in the picture is absurdity!!!. That was the view of King Solomon when he wrote the Book of Ecclesiastes 3000 years ago and it is the view of many of the modern philosophers today. Modern man has tried to come up with a lasting meaning for life without God in the picture (life under the sun), but it is not possible. Without the infinite-personal God of the Bible to reveal moral absolutes then man is left to embrace moral relativism. In a time plus chance universe man is reduced to a machine and can not find a place for values such as love. Both of Francis Schaeffer’s film series have tackled these subjects and he shows how this is reflected in the arts.

Here are some posts I have done on the series “HOW SHOULD WE THEN LIVE? : Francis Schaeffer’s “How should we then live?” Video and outline of episode 10 “Final Choices” episode 9 “The Age of Personal Peace and Affluence”episode 8 “The Age of Fragmentation”episode 7 “The Age of Non-Reason” episode 6 “The Scientific Age”  episode 5 “The Revolutionary Age” episode 4 “The Reformation” episode 3 “The Renaissance”episode 2 “The Middle Ages,”, and  episode 1 “The Roman Age,” .

In the film series “WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE HUMAN RACE?” the arguments are presented  against abortion (Episode 1),  infanticide (Episode 2),   euthenasia (Episode 3), and then there is a discussion of the Christian versus Humanist worldview concerning the issue of “the basis for human dignity” in Episode 4 and then in the last episode a close look at the truth claims of the Bible.

I have discussed many subjects with my liberal friends over at the Ark Times Blog in the past and I have taken them on now on the subject of the absurdity of life without God in the picture. Most of my responses included quotes from William Lane Craig’s book THE ABSURDITY OF LIFE WITHOUT GOD.  Here is the result of one of those encounters from June of 2013:

Hackett wrote, “I’m quite content with the reality of life as it is and have no need of faith and belief in any invisible being. This despair you feel must also require faith & belief.”

_______________
I DO NOT FEEL ANY DESPAIR ABOUT MY FUTURE BECAUSE I KNOW WHERE I AM GOING. ATHEISM FAILS IN THIS REGARD THOUGH.

William Lane Craig wrote:

According to the Christian worldview, God does exist, and man’s life does not end at the grave. In the resurrection body man may enjoy eternal life and fellowship with God. Biblical Christianity therefore provides the two conditions necessary for a meaningful, valuable, and purposeful life for man: God and immortality. Because of this, we can live consistently and happily. Thus, biblical Christianity succeeds precisely where atheism breaks down.

Now I want to make it clear that I have not yet shown biblical Christianity to be true. But what I have done is clearly spell out the alternatives. If God does not exist, then life is futile. If the God of the Bible does exist, then life is meaningful. Only the second of these two alternatives enables us to live happily and consistently. Therefore, it seems to me that even if the evidence for these two options were absolutely equal, a rational person ought to choose biblical Christianity. It seems to me positively irrational to prefer death, futility, and destruction to life, meaningfulness, and happiness. As Pascal said, we have nothing to lose and infinity to gain.

Kermit Gosnell, 3801 Lancaster and Atrocious Crimes Committed Against Women and Children

Kermit Gosnell, 3801 Lancaster and Atrocious Crimes Committed Against Women and Children

Kirsten Powers writing a “Column” in the USA Today under the title “Philadelphia abortion clinic horror” begins her article in the following way:

Infant beheadings. Severed baby feet in jars. A child screaming after it was delivered alive during an abortion procedure. Haven’t heard about these sickening accusations?

It’s not your fault. Since the murder trial of Pennsylvania abortion doctor Kermit Gosnell began March 18, there has been precious little coverage of the case that should be on every news show and front page. The revolting revelations of Gosnell’s former staff, who have been testifying to what they witnessed and did during late-term abortions, should shock anyone with a heart.

As noted on Summit Ministries blog,

Philadelphia abortionist Kermit Gosnell is accused of killing seven born-alive babies (many more actually died — hundreds more) and one grown woman in his abortion clinic. Testimony from former employees in recent days has included descriptions of literal beheadings, as Gosnell and his staff rushed from room to room using scissors to sever the spinal cords of minute-old infants. One woman died at the hands of his ill-equipped, unqualified medical staff. Jars of severed baby feet served as macabre decorations at Gosnell’s office, some have said.

Joe Carter has given a brief overview of this murderer and the grisly ways in which he and his staff treated women and murdered babies. Trevin Wax does a similar thing while addressing reasons why the media has said nothing about it.  Another has also pointed out the silence of media, which is appalling. As one noted, “The dead babies. The exploited women. The racism. The numerous governmental failures. It just is insanely newsworthy.”

There has also been a 21 minute documentary,“3801 Lancaster,” exposing Kermit Gosnell by explaining the horrific acts committed against women and children at this abortuary, the Philadelphia Women’s Medical Society, and the cover-up by state and local oversight agencies. It is almost beyond belief! Please be discerning before you watch this as it contains graphic pictures of aborted babies and tragic testimonies from some of those who were abused. It is not necessarily something everyone should watch or hear, but some must. It is factual and these atrocities cannot and should not be hidden, particularly since we hear nothing from the media.

For regular updates on the court proceedings, Andrée Seu Peterson has been writing summaries.

On the one hand, this silence of the media ought not to surprise us. It reflects the culture in which we live where they will promote their agenda and, often, attack Christians and Christianity. But on the other hand, we can be grateful that this sort of barbarism committed against humanity, specifically exploiting those who may be considered marginal and most needy, still offends consciences. Unlike the silence of the media, we must not to be silent. In love and with justice, we will stand with and for those fellow image bearers, and we will stand, in love and with justice, against those who exploit them for their own gain.

Lord, have mercy

Dr. Schaeffer’s sweeping epic on the rise and decline of Western thought and Culture

_______________________

I love the works of Francis Schaeffer and I have been on the internet reading several blogs that talk about Schaeffer’s work and the work below by the blogger Slimjim was really helpful. Schaeffer’s film series “How should we then live?  Wikipedia notes, “According to Schaeffer, How Should We Then Live traces Western history from Ancient Rome until the time of writing (1976) along three lines: the philosophic, scientific, and religious.[3] He also makes extensive references to art and architecture as a means of showing how these movements reflected changing patterns of thought through time. Schaeffer’s central premise is: when we base society on the Bible, on the infinite-personal God who is there and has spoken,[4] this provides an absolute by which we can conduct our lives and by which we can judge society.  Here are some posts I have done on this series: Francis Schaeffer’s “How should we then live?” Video and outline of episode 10 “Final Choices” , episode 9 “The Age of Personal Peace and Affluence”, episode 8 “The Age of Fragmentation”, episode 7 “The Age of Non-Reason” , episode 6 “The Scientific Age”  episode 5 “The Revolutionary Age” , episode 4 “The Reformation” episode 3 “The Renaissance”, episode 2 “The Middle Ages,”, and  episode 1 “The Roman Age,” .

Here are some links that those who are interested in Presuppositional apologetics would like to check out from the end of March 2013.  Lots of notable links this time.  And lots of focus on Francis Schaeffer!

1.) Evolution and the Soul–Ben Holloway’s thought on Evolution and the Soul.

2.) PRESUPPOSING: A REVIEW– This is a review of a book titled Presupposing: How to Defend the Faith – The Methods of Francis A. Schaeffer & Cornelius Van Til.  There seems to be ongoing debate of whether to understand Schaeffer as Van Tillian or not, this particular book examines Schaeffer in light of Van Til’s thought at the time when he taught Schaeffer at WTS according to the class syllabus.  Interesting approach.

3.) Bringing Schaeffer and Van Til Together-Camden Bucey quotes a famous account in an article for WTJ of Van Til lecturing Schaeffer and Schaeffer wishing he recorded it.

4.) It Is There and It Should Not Be Silent: Van Til’s Critique of Schaeffer–Essay on Van Til’s little known written critique of Francis Schaeffer.

5.) Francis Schaeffer’s Christian Spirituality– A Reformed Forum interview with William Edgar on his new book, Schaeffer on the Christian Life: Countercultural Spirituality.

6.) A Review of Schaeffer on the Christian Life by William EdgarAudio recording of a review by Camden Bucey and Jim Cassidy.

How to Answer the Fool – Promo

Published on Apr  1, 2013

“The fool has said in his heart, ‘There is no God’.” – Psalm 14:1
Not since the late Dr. Greg Bahnsen debated Dr. Gordon Stein in The Great Debate: Does God Exist? have we really seen presuppositional apologetics in action. And few have taken it into culture to show that there are only two positions, Christ…or absurdity.
But wait no more… Apologist Sye Ten Bruggencate takes this apologetic to the streets and Universities exposing the logical inconsistencies of the unbeliever (and dare we say some ‘Christians’) by showing that we don’t need ‘evidence’ to prove that God exists. For as Romans 1:18-21 declares:
“The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness, since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities – his eternal power and divine nature – have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse. For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened.”
Primarily designed for small group and Sunday School classes, How to Answer the Fool is a useful tool for individual study as an eye-opening, cinematic message, deliberately and strategically teaching you how to defend the Faith. Answering the call of Scripture to ‘be ready in season and out of season’ in order that we may ‘…always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in [us].’
“Within a minute or two you’ll see highly intelligent college students stunned at their inability to answer questions about knowledge and ethics. This six-part video series is a game-changer, not only for the unbelieving world but also for Christian apologists who compromise the gospel by arguing for the possibility that God exists and not the certainty of God’s existence.” – Gary DeMar

The guilty verdict for abortion doctor Kermit Gosnell has spurred a new conversation in America about the sanctity of human life. Last week’s conviction of Gosnell on three counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of three babies has many asking when life begins—and how we can protect it in the future. Among them is Richard Land, newly appointed president-elect of Southern Evangelical Seminary, a leader in apologetics education.

Last week, Gosnell, 72, was convicted of three counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of three babies born alive in his West Philadelphia clinic. He was acquitted of killing a fourth newborn during an illegal late-term abortion in a dirty clinic that served mostly low-income women and teens and went years without a state inspection.

After 10 days of deliberation, the jury also found Gosnell guilty of involuntary manslaughter in the death of a patient who died from an overdose of sedatives. Gosnell was sentenced to three life terms in prison without parole. It has been widely reported that Gosnell performed 40,136 abortions in his clinic from 1988 to 2009.

“This trial—and last week’s conviction and sentencing—has opened many eyes to what is really happening in the seedy underground world of abortion,” Land comments. “This very sad, disturbing and grotesque story is the knife’s edge of the abortion issue. Abortion is one of the most profound issues of our time, and the case of Kermit Gosnell, his disgusting abortion clinic and the horrors that went on there have rekindled a much-needed discussion on abortion in America.”

Land says the Gosnell trial, guilty verdict and sentencing of Gosnell to three life terms in prison has brought to light three questions that beg answers from all Americans:

1) What is a human being?

2) When does it become one?

3) When does it cease to become a human being?

“Headlines from Dr. Gosnell’s trial have forced many of us to reconsider how we think about the beginning and end of human life,” Land continues. “These three little babies were born alive in Gosnell’s clinic, and a jury of his peers found that this doctor ignored their whimpers and chose to end their short lives in the most callous and unfeeling way. Certainly the fate of this abortionist will cause many Americans to ask what they can do to protect our most innocent lives and help these little souls who can’t help themselves—just as their precious lives are beginning.”

Open letter to President Obama (Part 367)

(This letter was emailed to White House on 12-17-12.)

President Obama c/o The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW
Washington, DC 20500

Dear Mr.

Francis Schaeffer: “Whatever Happened to the Human Race?” (Episode 2) SLAUGHTER OF THE INNOCENTS

———-

What does the first amendment mean?
—–
We must absolutely set out to smash the lie of the new and novel concept of the separation of religion from the state which most people now hold and which Christians have just bought a bill of goods. This is new and this is novel. It has no relationship to the meaning of the First Amendment. The First Amendment was that the state would never interfere with religion. THAT’S ALL THE MEANING THERE WAS TO THE FIRST AMENDMENT. Just read Madison and the Spectator Papers if you don’t think so. That’s all it was!
Now we have turned it over and we have put it on its head and what we must do is absolutely insist that we return to what the First Amendment meant in the first place — not that religion can’t have an influence into society and into the state — not that. But we must insist that there’s a freedom that the First Amendment really gave. Now with this we must emphasize, and I said it, but let me say it again, we do not want a theocracy! I personally am opposed to a theocracy. On this side of the New Testament I do not believe there is a place for a theocracy ’till Jesus the King comes back. But that’s a very different thing while saying clearly we are not in favor of a theocracy in name or in fact, from where we are now, where all religious influence is shut out of the processes of the state and the public schools. We are only asking for one thing. We are asking for the freedom that the First Amendment guaranteed. That’s what we should be standing for.
________

Thank you so much for your time. I know how valuable it is. I also appreciate the fine family that you have and your commitment as a father and a husband.

Sincerely,

Everette Hatcher III, 13900 Cottontail Lane, Alexander, AR 72002, ph 501-920-5733, lowcostsqueegees@yahoo.com

Francis Schaeffer: “Whatever Happened to the Human Race” (Episode 3) DEATH BY SOMEONE’S CHOICE

Published on Oct 6, 2012 by

This crucial series is narrated by the late Dr. Francis Schaeffer and former Surgeon General Dr. C. Everett Koop. Today, choices are being made that undermine human rights at their most basic level. Practices once considered unthinkable are now acceptable – abortion, infanticide and euthanasia. The destruction of human life, young and old, is being sanctioned on an ever-increasing scale by the medical profession, by the courts, by parents and by silent Christians. The five episodes in this series examine the sanctity of life as a social, moral and spiritual issue which the Christian must not ignore. The conclusion presents the Christian alternative as the only real solution to man’s problems.
