Former Arkansas offensive lineman Shawn Andrews was the guest at the Little Rock Touchdown Club on Nov. 24, 2014.

It’s been 11 years since All-American offensive tackle Shawn Andrews played his final game for the Arkansas Razorbacks, and his opinions regarding NCAA regulations have changed.

“Back when I was in college and I saw my likeness on a video game, I thought it was cool,” said Andrews, who left after his junior year in 2003 to enter the NFL Draft. “But when I look back on it, that doesn’t seem right.”

Andrews, a first-round draft pick of the Philadelphia Eagles who went on to an injury-shortened, six-year NFL career, touched on a variety of subjects during an appearance Monday at the Little Rock Touchdown Club’s season-ending luncheon at the Embassy Suites.

His comments regarding the use of his video game likeness was in support of U.S. District Judge Claudia Wilken’s August ruling in favor of former UCLA basketball star Ed O’Bannon and 19 others in a lawsuit that challenged the NCAA’s regulation of college athletics on antitrust grounds.

On the subject of paying college athletes above the standard grant-in-aid, Andrews said he could relate to other athletes who grew up poor, as he did in Camden, and understood what his mother Linda went through to take care of him and his brothers Stacy and Derrick.

“That’s an issue that’s been a revolving door, and I think it would be a great idea,” Andrews said on whether a scholarship should cover more than room and board, books and tuition.

Leaving Arkansas for the NFL Draft seemed understandable at the time, but Andrews said he regretted how things unfolded leading up to his departure.

Andrews announced he was leaving school early to turn pro on Dec. 16, 2003, 15 days before Arkansas was to play Missouri in the Independence Bowl. Andrews said an acute sinus condition was going to force him to miss the game, but there were also reports at the time that he was not academically eligible and that he withdrew from school so the semester would not drag down his grade-point average.

“I had a lot of issues mentally and physically I was dealing with,” Andrews said. “I decided not to play in the bowl game and I had a lot of people call me selfish. To the Razorback family, that is one thing I regretted to this day. My circumstances had me in a bubble and I’m grateful for the lessons I learned from.”

Andrews said his mother, who worked at the International Paper plant in Camden, had been laid off when he was in college and didn’t want to see her struggle financially.

“My mother meant so much to me. When I saw what she did to raise us that if I got a $100 million contract, I would have given all of it to her,” Andrews said.

Andrews, 31, who lives in Little Rock with his wife, Janetta, and their son JaShawn, said he’s financially secure and learning how to play bass guitar with the hope of forming a band.

“I made some good decisions that things worked out to where I don’t feel like I have to be forced to go back to work,” Andrews said.

BETWEEN THE LINER NOTES

Flyleaf: Fully Alive

By Chris Carpenter
CBN.com Program Director

CBN.com – It is a wintry Wednesday afternoon in a non-descript city as an equally non-descript tour bus rolls to a stop in front of a revitalized inner city theater. From the bus’s environs bound five road weary musicians. A couple of them take a long exploratory look up and down the street while the other three busy themselves unloading equipment from the underbelly of the bus. The side of one of the equipment cases simply reads Flyleaf.

This scene seems like forever ago now for Belton, Texas based quintet Flyleaf. With their eponymous debut album firmly entrenched in the number three spot for the year on the Billboard Christian/Gospel chart, they have quickly become the darlings of the Contemporary Christian music scene. Appearances on MTV’s TRL and Jimmy Kimmel Live, have only heightened their popularity.

But they aren’t exactly your garden-variety rock and roll band. Fronted by the ferociously searing vocals of diminutive lead singer Lacey Mosely, Flyleaf is a flaming ball of energy fueled by seemingly tortured, dark, goth-tinged lyrics. For parents, it is music to cover your ears by. However, Flyleaf makes no allusion about their decidedly Christian beliefs.

“God has put us where we are for a reason,” explains bassist Pat Seals, in a recent interview with CBN.com. “At the beginning of the band we all sat down and said, ‘Ok, what kind of band are we?’ We just see this real world out there that is hurting so we made the decision to play churches as well as bars. We have done this since the beginning.”

“A lot of the kids today, when they hear about Christianity, all they hear about is judgment and hypocrisy and they can’t get clear answers, adds Mosely. “All they hear about is damnation and all that stuff based out of fear. We want to show them who God really is.”

Mosely knows those feelings all too well. The second oldest of six children raised by a single mother, Lacey slowly drifted into deep depression and eventually into addiction by the time she was a teenager. At age 16 she was contemplating suicide.

“I tried everything that I could get my hands on to try and make life make sense,” says Mosely. “The only thing that saved my life when I was going to take my life was Jesus. I am talking about the real Jesus – not the religious, churchy Jesus but a personal Jesus that you can relate to you and go through your life with you. When people hear our record, we pray that the Holy Spirit would touch them.”

Flyleaf’s sound is an enigma of sorts. With a decidedly aggressive approach to their sound, the band which also includes guitarist Sameer Bhattacharya, guitarist Jared Hartmann, and drummer James Culpepper, deliver sharpened, visceral lyrics that address the battle between good and evil. Their first single, “I’m So Sick”, reveals the need for deliverance from living in an infected world of darkness. “Perfect” is a direct reflection of II Corintians 12:9, while “I’m Sorry” poignantly illustrates Christ’s redemptive love in the face of our human frailty.

“Our lyrics have been drawn from, in some cases, personal, first hand, first person experiences with Lacey,” remarks Seals. “These are feelings that she has really walked in. They are very real.”

In a characteristically bold move, Flyleaf has opted to tour this summer with Korn, the antithesis of faith-based values. Whereas Flyleaf is all about shining light into a darkened, broken world, Korn is a case study in betrayal, alienation, and self-loathing. Their hope is that hearts will be softened both backstage and in the audience through their music.

Points out Mosely, “I just think it is cool that Korn lets Christians come out on tour with them. I do know that they are very anti-Christian. Just pray that we have strength and maturity and that we might be able to demonstrate all of the different fruits of the Holy Spirit. That we would love each other and that people would know us by our love for each other.”

With a fierce intensity that belies their youth, Flyleaf is positioned to be a force in the music industry for years to come. But ultimately their career ambitions have nothing to do with record sales but everything to do with facilitating positive change in hearts that are hurting.

“Everyone in this world needs to be valued, explains Seals. “That is what we are trying to do. Show people that they are valued.”

But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. – II Corinthians 12:9

Flyleaf is an American hard rock band, formed in the Belton[1] and Temple, Texas[2] regions in 2002. The band has charted on mainstream rock, Christian pop and Christian metal genres. They performed around the United States in 2003 until releasing their eponymous debut album, Flyleaf, in 2005. The album went platinum after selling more than one million copies.[6] The band won an online poll on yahoo.com and was named Yahoo!’s Who’s Next band of the month in March 2006 and they were named MTV’s artist of the week on December 24, 2007.[7][8] Flyleaf released their second album Memento Mori on November 10, 2009 which debuted and peaked at No. 8 on the Billboard charts.

Flyleaf’s third album New Horizons was revealed in October 30, 2012. At the same time, lead singer Lacey Sturm announced her departure and the band announced the new lead singer for the band, Kristen May.

Band history

Early on Lacey Sturm started playing with James Culpepper. Guitarists Jared Hartmann and Sameer Bhattacharya were later recruited. “Sameer and Jared are really experimental with melodies and pedals, and we all had different influences that were all blending together with the same passionate and hopeful heart, and that brought out this beautiful feeling. It was magical,” said Sturm.[9] Bassist Pat Seals joined after leaving his previous band The Grove.

As Passerby, the band released three EPs and played over 100 shows in Texas alone over the span of two years under the booking and promotion company Runt Entertainment.[citation needed] In 2004, Passerby played a showcase for RCA Records in New York City in hopes of getting signed. RCA passed on the band, but the president of Octone Records was very interested. They waited for two days in their van at a truck stop for a phone call about an Octone showcase. They were signed after the showcase, and on January 7, 2004, Octone Record’s website announced their arrival to the label.

In March 2004, Flyleaf traveled to Seattle, Washington to record an EP with Rick Parashar. Afterwards, they toured with Skillet, Breaking Benjamin, Staind and 3 Doors Down to promote their self-titled EP. Due to legal reasons, they renamed themselves Flyleaf in June 2004.[10] In October, the EP was released to stores (as Flyleaf), spawning their first official single and video for the EP version of “Breathe Today”.

Debut album (2005–08)

In 2005, the band recorded their first full-length album with Howard Benson. On October 4, 2005, the record was released under the title Flyleaf. Appearances on the album include Dave Navarro of Jane’s Addiction and Ryan White of Resident Hero. The first mainstream single from their debut album was “I’m So Sick“, “Fully Alive” was the second, “All Around Me” was the third, and “Sorrow” was the fourth.

In the summer of 2006, the band played on the mainstage of the Family Values Tour 2006 and in late 2006, Flyleaf toured with Disturbed, Stone Sour and Nonpoint on the Music As A Weapon III Tour. The band issued an exclusive EP, which was sold at the tour called Music As A Weapon EP which features an acoustic version of “Fully Alive”, and three previously unreleased tracks: “Much Like Falling”, “Justice And Mercy”, and “Christmas Song” (Much Like Falling and Justice and Mercy later appeared on Much Like Falling EP). A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the EP went to World Vision.[11]

In 2007 Flyleaf toured with Three Days Grace and throughout Australia with the Soundwave festival, and also toured Europe with Stone Sour and Forever Never. In the spring of 2007, Flyleaf headlined their Justice & Mercy Tour which first featured Skillet and Dropping Daylight. Later on they did a second leg of the tour which featured Sick Puppies, Kill Hannah and Resident Hero. Flyleaf again joined the Family Values Tour in 2007.[12] The music video for “I’m So Sick” appeared briefly in the 2007 film Live Free or Die Hard. Also a remix of the song “I’m So Sick” is on the Soundtrack to the movie Resident Evil: Extinction. “Perfect” was also released as a single in late 2007 to Christian radio stations. Released on November 5, 2007, the The Sims 2 expansion pack Teen Style Stuff featured the band’s song “Cassie” recorded in Simlish.

Flyleaf at Beale Street Music Festival on May 2, 2008.

Flyleaf also released a song entitled “Tina” which was the first song that they debuted in the release of Guitar Hero 3 as part of the Companion Disk Set. Also, the song “I’m So Sick” appears in Rock Band. On October 30, Flyleaf also released a digital EP titled Much Like Falling EP. The songs included on this EP were “Much Like Falling”, an acoustic version of “Supernatural”, the limited release song “Tina”, and The EP is available on iTunes along with the expanded edition of their debut album. On April 26, 2008, the band released their fourth video “Sorrow” from their debut album on MTV2.[13] The band toured with Seether in late spring, but had to cancel five shows due to a problem with Sturm’s voice. The members of Flyleaf took the fall off to write new music, hoping to begin recording by January.

Flyleaf also contributed a cover of the song, “What’s This?” from The Nightmare Before Christmas soundtrack for its cover album, Nightmare Revisited.

Memento Mori (2009–2010)

When the band finished recording their second album, The band had selected 14 songs out of the 30 already written. Some of these songs, such as “Again“, “Have We Lost”, and “Beautiful Bride” have been performed live. The band reunited with producer Howard Benson and enlisted the mixing services of Chris Lord-Alge[14] It was released on November 10, 2009.[15] The album has been titled Memento Mori. It features songs such as “Beautiful Bride”, “Arise”, “Missing”, “Again” and “Set Apart This Dream” which was inspired by the Christian book Wild at Heart.[16] Flyleaf has debuted an additional two songs live during a small acoustic tour the band did in Afghanistan for United States Armed Forces called “Chasm” and “Circle”.[17] As they published on their MySpace page, Flyleaf’s first single “Again” was released on iTunes and also played on the radio. Meiert Avis directed the single’s music video titled “Again”.

Sturm performing in Bagram Air Field, Afghanistan in 2009.

The group, starting in Seattle, Washington on September 28, 2009, held VIP listening parties throughout the country inviting fans to be the first to hear a selection of songs from the new record and view brand new music videos before they aired nationwide. By partnering with Eventful, fans were given the opportunity to demand that their city get routed into the “Road to Memento Mori” using Eventful’s “Demand It!” service.

Based on overwhelming demand there were over 10 events. Fans saw Sturm, Sameer Bhattacharya, and Jared Hartmann, who made special appearances at these intimate gatherings across the country.[18]

On November 2, 2009, the band released a short Webisode for their new album.[19]

Flyleaf’s other video, “Beautiful Bride,” was shot in early August 2009 by director Don Tyler. The video was originally released at the Memento Mori listening events, but was later featured on Yahoo! the day Memento Mori came out. The video features James’ sister/Sameer’s wife, April, as the bride and Joshua Sturm, Lacey’s husband, as the groom. Like “Again,” this video features Pat’s artwork throughout the video. Future singles are set to include “Chasm” for rock stations and “Missing” for alternative.

Flyleaf toured throughout the United States with Breaking Benjamin and Three Days Grace that lasted from January to March 2010. They embarked on a headlining tour called the “Unite & Fight Tour” with 10 Years and Fair to Midland. The tour began on April 28, 2010 and ended on June 6, 2010. June 11, 2010 the group has acted on MUZ TV Award 2010(Премия МУЗ-ТВ) in Russia with songs: “I’m So Sick”, “Again” and a song: “All Around Me“. They are one of many bands that performed at Download Festival on June 12, 2010. The band encouraged fans to donate to stop human trafficking in other countries.

The band was scheduled to continue with the second leg of the “Unite & Fight” tour from September 10, 2010 to October 23, 2010, with Story of the Year, and performed at various festivals through the end of the year. They also released an animated music video for “Chasm” on September 22, which was directed/animated/illustrated by Giles Timms. At the end of the Unite and Fight tour in early November, Lacey collaborated with band Apocalyptica on the song “Broken Pieces”, as well as with Australian singer Orianthi in her new song “Courage”.[20] Soon after they released “Arise” as the next single from Memento Mori.

On November 6, 2010, the band performed at Rock the Hood, a festival at Fort Hood in memory of all the soldiers who have died, especially the 13 who died at the November 2009 shooting.

On November 15, 2010, Lacey publicly shared her pregnancy with the fans. Lacey said via Facebook that she and her husband Joshua would be expecting a baby boy in early 2011.[21]

On December 7, 2010, Flyleaf released an EP titled Remember to Live, then released a cover of the John Mark McMillan song “How He Loves” on December 21, 2010.[22][23]

New Horizons and change in vocalists (2011–2013)

On January 22, 2011, Hartmann announced that he and Culpepper were building a recording studio and preparing to record demos for their next album.[24] In February 2011, the band started pre-production for their next album at Treelady Studios in Pittsburgh, PA.[25][unreliable source?]

On June 1, 2012, the band confirmed via Twitter that the album and first single will be called New Horizons.[26] The single premiered on South East Michigan’s 89X Radio on August 1, 2012,[27] and released through iTunes on August 21, 2012.[28]

On September 4, 2012, Lacey Sturm’s birthday,[citation needed] Flyleaf released the official video for “New Horizons” on Fuse. The video included a picture in the background as a tribute to Rich Caldwell and footage of Lacey and Joshua Sturm’s son, Joshua “Jack” Sturm.[29]

Flyleaf also released an additional single, entitled “Call You Out”, on September 25, 2012.[citation needed] The album was released on October 30, 2012.[30]

On October 22, 2012, the band announced that Lacey Sturm was stepping down as the band’s lead vocalist. In a statement written by Pat Seals, Kristen May, formerly of Vedera, was announced as Sturm’s replacement. Sturm expressed that with the birth of her son, Jack, and the death of one of the band’s lead audio engineers, Rich Caldwell, that she knew the true meaning of “Memento Mori” (the title of their second full-length album).[31]

Guitarist Sameer Bhattacharya stated in an interview that they will write new music with their new lead vocalist Kristen May.[32]

Who We Are EP (2013–present)

Flyleaf released a new single on June 18, 2013 with May on vocals, “Something Better” featuring P.O.D. front man Sonny Sandoval. A new EP, Who We Are, was released on July 9, 2013.[33]

Genre

The band’s style has been identified as alternative metal,[34] hard rock,[35][32] heavy metal,[34] nu metal,[36] post-grunge,[4] alternative rock,[37] post-hardcore[38] and “emometal“.[39] Because of the many religious references in Flyleaf’s music, they are also considered as Christian rock and Christian metal band.[40][41]

Christian faith

All members of the band are Christians.[citation needed] Their faith influences their music, but former lead singer Sturm doesn’t believe that necessarily makes Flyleaf strictly a Christian band. The band says they are Christians who play in a rock band, and their faith is heard within their music.[42] “We all share the same faith.”[this quote needs a citation] In 2005 Flyleaf performed a free concert at Los Angeles Pierce College for a Christian group at the college, which was a three-day event.[citation needed]

In a May 2010 interview, original lead singer Sturm was asked how it felt to be in a Christian rock band and play in Las Vegas:

Well, you know what? I don’t know what you mean by a “Christian rock band.” It’s hard to say that because people all have a different definition of what that means. If it means that we’re Christians, then yeah, we’re Christians, but if a plumber’s a Christian, does that make him a “Christian plumber?” I mean we’re not playing for Christians. We’re just playing honestly and that’s going to come out.[43]

New lead singer May has felt the band’s fans believe she’s “not Christian enough” despite professing to be a Christian. She also hopes that people don’t discount the band by using the “Christian” label.[44]

45 Years after the Big Shootout some of the key players reunite!!!!

__________

45 Years after the Big Shootout some of the key players reunite!!!!

LITTLE ROCK — Forty-five years later, hate and venom were replaced by love, respect and sugar and spice Monday at the Little Rock Touchdown Club.

Spotlighted was delicious blend of a wonderful essence of sports that is nowadays so often in the shadows.

For decades, Arkansans hated James Street, seethed at the very mention of his name. Many could not bear to watch the primitive replay of that 44-yard pass he completed to Randy Peschel that led to the Texas Longhorns’ victory in the “Big Shootout in 1969,” or “Game of the Century,” eventually paving the way for UT to win the national championship.

Street broke the hearts of Razorback fans, cut away part of their soul and the scars were evident for decades.

Fifty years later, the two teams had a reunion and out of rivalry, community and comraderie developed as members of both teams shared stories and reflections. The Texas players openly spoke about how lucky they were to win that day and how much respect they had for Arkansas in the much-hyped (particularly for the era) confrontation of two undefeated teams.

Street and teammate Bob McKay later paid their own way to speak to the Little Rock Touchdown Club and started knocking away barriers, unsharpening horns into plowshares.

The two former “enemies” were heartily welcomed by Razorback fans.

Street was so moved by the respect he was shown by Arkansans that he again paid his own way to come to Arkansas for the premier of the movie about the “Big Shootout” in Little Rock.

“He came back and told us what a wonderful trip he had and how nice the Arkansas people were,” said Bob McKay, an All-American lineman for Texas, teammate and close friend.

It turned out to be Street’s final major public appearance. He died 25 days later.

Members of that 1969 Longhorn team were so moved by Street’s description of his Arkansas experiences that they pooled funds and wrote a check to the Little Rock Touchdown Club to use for something appropriate.

David Bazzel, the creator and head of the club and master entrepreneur, got together with Bruce James, a star defensive end for the Razorbacks who played in theat 1969 game, and the wheels started turning. After consultation with McKay and some of the other Texas players, they came up with the James Street Sportsmanship Award to be given to a player, manager or anyone else connected with a Little Rock high school football team for a body of work of sportsmanship and character traits exhibited by Street.

The UT players from that era said they would fund a $1,000 scholarship in Street’s memory to a worthy recipient as “long as we are standing,” said McKay.

The 12 finalists, nominated by their coaches, were introduced Monday.

McKay and running back Ted Koy were members of that team who traveled to Little Rock on Monday for the awards presentation.

McKay, an offensive lineman, and James, a defensive lineman, butted heads often in that 1969 game. Monday, they were said by side on the dais, sharing a meal and smiles.

“For us, this is what football is all about,” McKay said. “Everybody played as hard as we could and at the end, the scoreboard shows who won, but we could have lost that game … We wanted Street to pass as few times as possible. Our tight end couldn’t outrun my mother. Coach Royal told us afterwards six hands (two players from Arkansas and Peschel) went up for that pass and our two hands somehow came down with it.”

Many were not who would be considered stars on their teams. Some had overcome or were fighting serious illnesses. Some were fulfilling financial obligations to take care of their families. Some were leaders and an inspiration beyond the field. All had special traits.

A man was using sign language as Bazzel introduced the finalists. One of them was from Arkansas School for the Deaf.

Each finalist received a plaque, emblazoned with a picture of Street and former Texas coach Darrell Royal and shooks hands with the Texas representatives.

Dominique Scott of Little Rock Christian was announced as the winner, which was almost an afterthought. They all had persevered ultimately won, just like James Street, who reportedly battled alcoholism in his early days and overcame it to go “drink-free” for 30 years until his dead.

Amid the sweetness, Bazzel got syrupy.

“These people represent not only the essence of sports but the essence of what America is built on,” he said as he saluted them.

And some new-era players got a newly created award from old-school football guys who wanted to honor a teammate who exhibited classic, bedrock principles of success and fortitutde beneath the surface glory.

When those players go home and Google “James Street and Big Shootout,” they’ll understand more.

Senior Dominique Scott, a visual arts magnet student at Parkview Arts/Science Magnet High School was presented with the “James Street Award” for outstanding sportsmanship for the 2014-15 football season. The award is presented to only one student, and this is the first time it has been presented.

Was Lucy An Ape-man? John D. Morris versus Donald Johanson

________

Dr. Donald Johanson pictured below:

Big Think Interview With Donald Johanson

Published on Apr 23, 2012

A conversation with the paleoanthropologist and founding director of the Institute of Human Origins.

Was Lucy An Ape-man?

“Lucy,” consisting of a skeleton forty percent complete, was discovered in Ethiopia by Donald Johanson in 1974, and was dated at 3.2 million years of age. He calculated her to have stood about 3’6″ tall, and to have weighed about 50 pounds. Certain features suggested to Johanson that it may have walked erect, and was therefore evolving into a human. In a recent interview, Johanson recollects, “I happened to glance over my right shoulder . . .and there on the surface of the ground was a little bit of an elbow, I recognized it immediately as belonging to a human ancestor.”

Lest one get the impression that Johanson is blessed with an unusual gift of discernment, let me point out that many in the anthropological community have yet to be so convinced. Indeed, it is impossible to make snap judgments like this, while a number of sophisticated studies have shown that the austraiopithecines, in general, and “Lucy,” in particular, were not ape-human intermediates, but rather, an extinct species of ape which probably spent most of its time in the trees.

Let us look at some of the specific features of “Lucy” which are important in this study. Everyone agrees that from the neck up, “Lucy” was gorilla-like. Her brain size was about one-fourth the size of a human brain; her jaw was “U”-shaped, typical of gorillas; her teeth were large, far larger than those in humans.

From the neck down, nearly every: feature was likewise non-human. Australopithecus fossils, including those which are thought to be much more recent and therefore should be more human-like, have long, curved fingers and long, curved toes—well adapted to swinging from tree limb to tree limb.

The features which suggest upright posture to Johanson are primarily the hip and knee joints, but numerous studies on the hip have shown otherwise. Oxnard, in his 1987 book, Fossils, Teeth and Sex (which contains an excellent summary of these various studies), claims that, “These fossils clearly differ more from both humans and African apes than do these living groups from each other. The australopithecines are unique” (p. 227). Evidently they could walk somewhat upright, as pygmy chimps do today, but not in the human manner at all. Furthermore, Johanson seldom reminds us that he found the knee joint—the strongest evidence for upright stance—in a location some two to three kilometers away, and in a layer of rock some 200 feet lower. Clearly, the knee does not belong with the rests, but even if they do go together, the knee is not diagnostically upright, and; points more specifically to tree-climbing abilities, according to Oxnard and other authorities.

Several investigators, including Richard Leakey, have now concluded that two or perhaps three species have been wrongly combined in “Lucy.” She was not a human ancestor. At best, she was a form of extinct ape; at worst, she was a mosaic, yet she is still touted as the best “evidence” for human evolution.

As the eminent, evolutionary anthropologist David Pilbeam has stated, “Paleoanthropology reveals more about how humans view themselves than it does how humans came about.” Unfortunately, many textbooks, as well as many museum exhibits, still portray the humanistic view of mankind, as well as the evolutionary view of mankind’s origin, as if it were well supported by the data.

Addendum to BTG No. 11b Article

This article, published in November 1989 has come under criticism by certain evolutionists. At issue was the statement that “Furthermore, Johanson seldom reminds us that he found the knee joint—the strongest evidence for upright stance—in a location some two to three kilometers away, and in a layer of rock some 200 feet lower.”

The statement was based on reports of Johnson’s public comments and the slides he used at the University of Missouri on November 20, 1986, (see ‘Bible-Science Newsletter”, October 1987 pp 1-3), compared with a photo he published in his book Lucy: the Beginnings of Humankind (1981) page 157 and a National Geographic article in November 1985, page 593.

Evidently, there were two knee joints, found in different locations, and confusion between the two has led to numerous erroneous articles, of which mine was one. The article is included here as published for archival purposes, with this retraction of the sentence in question.

However, the point made in the very next sentence remains true, and that is the main point—”…even if they (i.e. the knee and the other bones) do go together”, it does not demonstrate human ancestry. The most that could be claimed for Lucy is that she was a chimp-like primate, who spent most of her time in the trees, who perhaps walked a little more erect than other tree-dwelling primates when on the ground. I would be willing to concede this point.

Study of the tactics used in the decades-long harangue by evolutionists to re-establish the pedigree of Lucy’s knee is instructive. Evolutionists scour the creationist’s literature for any error, no matter how trivial. (Creationists are not infallible, and error does creep in, despite our best efforts.) These minor errors are trumpeted far-and-wide by self appointed evolutionary watchdogs, and used to claim that creationism is not credible, all the while ignoring much more significant misstatements or inappropriate museum displays, etc., by evolutionists.

An error in detailing Lucy’s knee does not change the fact that she was a tree-dwelling primate! Humans and apes are quite separate.

Discovery of the needle does not make the haystack disappear. A look at the big picture finds little evidence that can be used for macro-evolution, and much to support creation.

Razorbacks enter SWC Hall

Billy Moore (right) accepts his medal from Southwest Conference Hall of Fame president Carroll Dawson Monday during the 2014 Southwest Conference Hall of Fame induction ceremony in Little Rock.

The moment of being inducted into the Southwest Conference Hall of Fame caught up with Billy Moore.

“I had enough b.s. in me to convince them that I was as good as anybody,” an emotional Moore said Monday. “Every young man dreams about things like this.”

Moore, who starred for Arkansas’ football teams in 1960-1962, was one of nine former Razorbacks athletes and coaches inducted into the Southwest Conference Hall of Fame’s fifth class Monday at the Little Rock Marriott.

Former Razorbacks basketball coach Eddie Sutton, basketball player Sidney Moncrief, football players Moore, Lance Alworth, Leotis Harris, Loyd Phillips and Clyde Scott, and track and field stars Mike Conley and Melody Sye were honored during a luncheon that was included in the Little Rock Touchdown Club’s fall lineup.

Arkansas was a member of the Southwest Conference in 1915-1991 before moving to the SEC. The SWC lasted until 1996 when the conference was dissolved. The conference’s property rights were transferred to the Texas Sports Hall of Fame. In 2013, the Southwest Conference Hall of Fame was created.

Before Monday, the only University of Arkansas figures in the Hall were former football coach and athletic director Frank Broyles, basketball coach Nolan Richardson, track and field coach John McDonnell, and football players Jimmy Johnson and Jerry Jones.

Moore played at Arkansas in 1960-1962 and was the Razorbacks’ quarterback in 1962 when they finished the season ranked No. 6 in the nation. During Moore’s career, the Razorbacks were 25-8 and won two SWC championships. Arkansas went to the Cotton Bowl in 1960 and to the Sugar Bowl in 1961 and 1962. He became the first Arkansas quarterback to earn All-American honors in 1962.

Sutton led the Razorbacks to five SWC championships and was 260-75 in 11 seasons. He took Arkansas to the Final Four in 1978. His .776 winning percentage is the highest in SWC men’s basketball.

Former Arkansas and NBA player Joe Kleine, now an assistant coach for the UALR men’s basketball team, spoke in place of Sutton, who did not attend because of health reasons.

“Everyone needs to keep Coach Sutton in their prayers,” Kleine said. “He is struggling right now. He really wanted to be here.”

“Coach Broyles saw things that not even the people that lived here could see. Part of that was hiring Eddie Sutton.”

Moncrief, a Little Rock Hall graduate, was Arkansas’ all-time leading scorer until 1992. He helped lead Arkansas to the Final Four in 1978 and was the conference’s MVP in 1979.

The Milwaukee Bucks drafted Moncrief fifth overall in 1979. He played 11 seasons in the NBA, was an All-Star five times and also won the Defensive Player of the Year award twice.

“It struck me, where you are from runs deep,” Moncrief said. “Arkansas is my home. I think about all of the support I’ve had for so many years and it’s so awesome.”

Alworth, who did not attend Monday’s ceremony, led the nation in punt return yardage in 1960 and 1961 en route to being a two-time All-American at Arkansas. He played 11 seasons in the AFL and NFL and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1978. He finished with 543 receptions for 10,266 yards and 85 touchdowns as a professional with the San Diego Chargers and Dallas Cowboys.

Conley won 16 NCAA championships, four TAC national titles and 13 SWC titles between 1981 and 1985. He won a gold medal in the triple jump at the 1992 Olympics and a silver medal in the 1984 Olympics. The Chicago native still owns the U.S. indoor record in the triple jump at 58 feet, 3 1/4 inches.

As a freshman at Arkansas, Conley completed against future Olympians Carl Lewis (Houston) in the long jump and Keith Connor (SMU) in the triple jump. So the road to success on the collegiate level didn’t come early for Conley.

“I hate to lose, but I learned real quick. I got humble real quick,” Conley said. “That’s one of the reasons for my success.”

Conley also credited McDonnell, his former coach, for his success at Arkansas.

“He pushed us to our limit,” Conley said of McDonnell, who coached the Razorbacks to 40 national championships in indoor and outdoor track and cross country. “I could have landed anywhere at any university. But I’m not naive to think that the results would have been the exact same.”

Harris, a Little Rock native, played on the offensive line at Arkansas in 1974-1977. He helped the Razorbacks set a school record in rushing with 320.3 yards per game in 1975 as they earned a share of the SWC title. In 1977, Harris was an All-America selection and was named to the All-SWC first team.

The former Little Rock Hall star was appreciative of being inducted into the SWC Hall of Fame.

“Success comes with a price,” Harris said, “and that’s hard work.”

The Green Bay Packers drafted Harris in the sixth round of the 1978 draft, and he went on to start 55 of 74 games during six seasons with the team.

Phillips, who was part of Arkansas’ 1964 national championship team, won the Outland Trophy in 1966. The three-year starter at defensive tackle (1964-1966) was a three-time All-SWC selection and an All-American pick twice. During Phillips’ three seasons at Arkansas, the Razorbacks were 29-3.

Scott, a Smackover native, gained 1,463 yards in 1946-1948. He was Arkansas’ first three-time All-SWC player and led the Razorbacks to the 1947 Cotton Bowl. He won the silver medal in the 110-meter hurdles at the 1948 London Olympics. He also played in the NFL for the Philadelphia Eagles and Detroit Lions in 1949-1952.

Scott’s son Steve relayed a message to Arkansas fans from his father, who turned 90 in August and is currently battling dementia.

“He’d like to say, ‘Thank you so much for remembering me,’ ” Steve Scott said.

Sye was a five-time All-American in cross country. The New Jersey native led Arkansas to a top 10 finish in the 1986 NCAA championship meet. In 1987, Sye broke an 11-year-old record in the 5,000 meters at the SWC Championships. She qualified for the NCAA Championships eight times and completed in the 1987 U.S. Indoor Championships.

In 1996, Sye became the second woman to be inducted into the University of Arkansas Sports Hall of Honor.

Prelude

For many years and generations, our society has been losing a most valuable ingredient. Why do we see so many perversions come to be accepted as “normal” and “natural?” I personally believe that men don’t know how to be men and fathers don’t know how to be fathers to their children. I believe women long to be women but men have run away from their responsibilities leaving the women to be both mother and father. This will never work. A child, whether a son or a daughter, gains his identity from his or her father. If the father is not there, either physically or emotionally, how can he instill any worth or identity upon the child? Our only hope is in learning how much our heavenly Father desires a close and intimate relationship with His children and becoming the children He says we are.

What you are about to read is a story of hope…and the reason we sing…the reason we will never stop praising the Lord Jesus Christ. The following is our personal witness of the love and power of Jesus Christ in our lives. As you read, we are asking the Lord to break your heart by the things that break His heart. And may you realize your Father’s great love for you! You see, it’s time for the Church to be honest. If we can’t be honest then how can we be healed? And if we can’t love one another enough to see healing in our own lives, how can we love a lost and dying world enough to see healing in their lives? No sin is too little or too big. They are all filthy before Him! All we know is we have been called to bring hope and healing to the lost and dying! How He loves you, child!

Dennis & Melinda Jernigan

DJ’s Testimony

We Have Believed A Lie!
Before I begin my story, you must know that I desire to bring honor to my earthly father and mother as well as to my heavenly Father. The reason I share the things I am about to share with you is because I believe many people will be able to identify with what I have “gone through.” My greatest desire is that you would come to know the Father even more intimately than I have. Because we are all born sinners we all have some very basic needs. Yes, we have physical needs. But I’m referring to the many emotional and spiritual needs we are born with. Little children gain their identity through their father. I can remember being a little boy and desiring my daddy’s approval and acceptance for every area of my life. Being a father of both boys and girls myself I can see not only how my sons need me to help them realize “who they are” but my daughters as well. One of my daughters may “do” her own hair and come to my wife, Melinda, and ask how it looks. But it takes dad’s stamp of approval before she will really believe that it looks acceptable. And isn’t that the way it should be with our heavenly Father? I desire to gain my worth and acceptance from my heavenly Father? I desire to gain my worth and acceptance from my heavenly Father and who He says I am. As a father, I desire to nurture my children in such a way that they do not become dependent upon me but are able to transfer their deep needs to their heavenly Father. I realize I will never be perfect as a father, husband, worship leader, or person. But my Father is perfect–in every way! My healing has come and will continue to come as I seek an intimate and life-giving relationship with Him.

I was born in Sapulpa, Oklahoma. Soon after my birth, my parents moved to the farm my grandparents (Samuel Washington and Myrtle Mae Snyder) had built…the farm where my father was raised. We lived three miles from the small town of Boynton, Oklahoma (Pop. approx. 400) where my brothers and I attended school. The Lord gifted me from an early age to play the piano. By the time I was nine years old I was regularly playing for the worship times at First Baptist Church. This was also the church my grandfather Herman Everett Johnson had pastored. This was the church where my parents, Samuel Robert Jernigan and Peggy Yvonne Johnson, had met. My father had also “led singing” here from the earliest I can remember (as he presently does today). When I was about six or seven years old, my grandmother Jernigan moved back to the farm in a trailer next to the old farmhouse where we lived. And each day after school I could be found at my grandmother’s house practicing piano conveniently forgetting about my chores.

It was through my grandmother Jernigan that the Lord taught me to play the piano. Since we lived so far from any town with a music teacher, I had to learn to play by ear. My grandma was very patient with me and taught me how to “chord” for “church playing!” It was also my grandma who told me there was more to a relationship with Jesus than getting saved. She once told me that she would know my grandpa Jernigan when she got to heaven because the Lord had told her his “new name in glory!” I was in awe! God spoke to my grandma…but I could never hear him speak to me. Needless to say, I grew very close to this godly woman. It would be many, many years before I would begin to realize the full impact that she was to have and is having on my life.

My relationship with my parents, from talking with many others over the years, was quite typical for my generation. We were not an affectionate family. While I did feel affection from my mother, I never remember receiving physical affection from my father or among my brothers and myself. My daddy was very hard working. We were not poor…but we were not rich monetarily. In addition to working the farm, my dad was employed by a utility company and eventually worked as a mechanic for many years. Since I have gotten older, God has reminded me of many ways my father expressed affection and love for me as I was growing up. My problem was not my father. My problem was that I believed a lie. Once Satan got his foot in the door of my heart, any rejection – no matter how big or how small was perceived as a lack of love from my dad (or whomever I felt rejected by at the time).

Looking back, I realize that I was a very selfish child. From the earliest I can remember, I found it hard to believe anyone loved me. I felt worthless. Since I didn’t believe anyone loved me, I couldn’t really receive love. What I did discover, though, was that if I did something well, people would like me. So, I tried to be the best in whatever I did: schoolwork, basketball, music, etc….But I became so frustrated because no matter how well I performed, it never seemed to be good enough. I was very miserable and felt all alone (even though I wasn’t alone!). Sports and grades weren’t giving me any hope…neither was music. Because I made choices based upon how or what I perceived people thought of me, I became a very selfish person…usually at the expense of others and most often as the expense of my little brothers. What people thought was so good, my outward performance, soon began to hide the deepest hurts and failures of my heart. And I must add that my daddy and mama never missed one single event I was involved in while growing up, this should have spoken volumes to me. Still I chose to believe a lie.

Now I need to tell you about what I consider to be the most painful part of my life, a part I tried to hide. Since I felt so rejected, I allowed it to permeate every part of my life. What I didn’t realize was that Satan was lying to me, all the while trying to keep me from God’s plan for my life. This included the sexual part of my life. In this area I felt so ashamed and afraid of rejection that I became even more selfish and perverted in my way of thinking. As a boy I needed a role model to show me the way to manhood. But because I felt rejected by the main man in my life I, in turn, rejected him and began to yearn for intimacy with a man in perverse ways. Because of this wrong thinking I came to believe I was homosexual. It must have begun early in my life because I remember having those feelings for the same gender at a very early age. I hid this from others through high school and through my four years at Oklahoma Baptist University even though it wasn’t hidden from those I had relations with. I might add that even though I was involved in homosexuality through my college days that I still regard that time with fondness. It is in looking back that I can see the awesome and mighty hand of God ministering His love to me in the midst of my sin and confusion. Because of my lack of musical training while growing up, my musical studies at OBU were like learning a whole new language. To be able to actually read and write the music I could see or hear was like a whole new world opening up to me. This would be very valuable later in my life as I began to express my heart and my feelings in song.

Upon my graduation from OBU in 1981, God began to move in supernatural ways that even I couldn’t see! One of these instances was a simple music concert. A group called The Second Chapter of Acts was going to be in concert in Norman, Oklahoma, and I knew that I was supposed to go. By that time in my life I was looking for anybody who was real, someone who had a real walk with the Lord. Among Christian musicians, I was looking for more than entertainers. So, I went to their concert. I knew by the words they said and the music they sang that these people were genuine, and the message was born out of times of desperation in their own lives. I needed hope. As I listened to Annie Herring speak and sing I was overwhelmed by the love she spoke of. This was the love I had dreamed of but still couldn’t believe was available to me! So I listened very intently with great expectation–until she came to the song *”Mansion Builder.” This song caught my deepest attention because of the simple phrase, “Why should I worry? Why should I fret? I’ve got a Mansion Builder Who ain’t through with me yet?” All of a sudden she just stopped in the middle of the song and said, “There are those of you here who are dealing with things that you have never told anyone and you are carrying those burdens and that’s wrong–that’s sin and you need to let those hurts go and give them to the Lord. We are going to sing the song again and I want you to lift your hands to the Lord–and all of those burdens that you are carrying, I want you to place them in your hands and lift your hurts to Him.” This was all new to me–worship and praise. I had always thought before that this was just an emotional response that didn’t really mean anything. But you know what it did for me? As I lifted my hands, God became more real to me than I had ever imagined! The lifting of my hands was more than a physical action. My hands were an extension of my heart! I realized that Jesus had lifted His hands for me–upon the cross. I realized that He truly was beside me a nd that He was willing to walk with me and carry me and just be honest with me. And I could be honest with Him! At that moment, I cried out to God and lifted those burdens to the Lord and said, “Lord Jesus, I can’t change me or the mess I’ve gotten myself into–but you can!” And you know what? He did change me!

At that time I acknowledged the fact that I was totally helpless and I turned everything in my life over to Jesus–my thoughts, my emotions, my physical body…and my past. Basically, I took responsibility for my own sins and yielded every right to Jesus–my right to be loved, my right even to life. Because of my choice to sin, I deserved death and hell–and that’s where Jesus came in. At that point, something wonderful began to take place in my life…I began to hear the Lord speak to my heart–“Dennis, I love you. I have always loved you! Dennis, you are my child–I love you no matter what. Dennis, I will always love you!” It was then that I lost the need to be accepted or loved by others because I realized Jesus would love me and accept me no matter what, even when I was rejected by others! It was also at this same time that those sexually perverse thoughts and desires were changed…and He began to replace them with holy and pure thoughts about what sexual love was all about. You see, the sexual drive is a creative drive and Satan knows that if he can pervert that drive, he can kill and pervert God’s creativity in us.

This all seems to fit in place for me now. For when I was about nine years old, I felt the Lord speak to me that I would someday have a large family of my own…with nine children! I thought, “Lord, You must be crazy. How can I have children if I have homosexual (unnatural) desires?” Do you see what Satan was trying to do? Not only is God blessing me with a wonderful marriage and many children, He continues to pour out His music in my heart. It is out of the gratefulness of my heart towards the Lord that I will have all the children He will bless me with and I will never stop singing praise to His name. The secret–the key for me is knowing that Jesus loves me and that I need Him desperately more every day…and realizing that He wants to change me–to change my heart–every day. My desire is to come into His presence (lay myself on the altar) that He might change me into His own image. You see, when I was nine years old, Jesus began calling me to Himself. On September8, 1968, I asked my mother how to be saved. She explained the plan of God’s salvation–that we were all sinners and that we deserved to perish in hell. I was saved that Sunday afternoon and baptized that same evening. I believe that I was saved when I was nine years old, but because I looked and perceived my heavenly Father through my own perverted image of my earthly father, I couldn’t fully receive all He had in store for me–like acceptance and forgiveness. It is so amazing to me that He loved me enough to preserve my life the way he has in this day and age of promiscuity, perversion, and sexually transmitted diseases like AIDS. One thing that kept me going during the early years of my life when I felt like giving up and living in sin, was the fact that Jesus kept calling me. If He was God then there was truly hope for me! The most precious thing of all is that He loves me with all His heart…and that’s how I want to love Him. Because of this relationship with Jesus, my healing has been and will be a continual process…until the day I die and can see Him face to face!

Another major point of change for me came during this same time in 1981–yet another divine setup! A close friend found out about my past. I knew I would be disgraced and rejected now! When he confronted me, I ran from the house and continued to run until I could run no more. At that point, I simply cried out to God to speak to me. At the same, my eyes were directed to look into the darkness of the evening sky where I was drawn to a puffy white cloud floating above. This cloud looked like an old man with a beard and outstretched arms. Near this cloud was a smaller cloud in the shape of a lamb. As I watched, the bearded man engulfed the little lamb in His arms. I knew immediately that God was speaking to me…that this was what He wanted to do for me in this time of need. I then had the grace to return and “face the music.” But that’s not what happened! This friend was a true friend. He told me he loved me and was willing to stand with me as I walked through this time of deliverance in my life. And you know what else happened? God began to bring others into my life who were willing to love me unconditionally and to walk with me through the trials of my life–no matter what–for my complete healing.

In 1983, God called me to marry my wife, Melinda. I assumed that since I considered myself to be healed that there was no need to share my past with her. But I soon realized that I was really still trying to hide–which meant I still carried a burden and that I was still more concurred with what man thought of me than what God thought of me. Soon after we were married, the babies started coming! And with the babies, the added pressure of responsibility to deal with the real issues of total healing in my life. Hiding the truth would keep me from the healing God wanted for me in my life.

Because I hid these things from others, my relationships could never truly be what God wanted them to be–because in true love there is no fear. I was always afraid to tell anyone because I thought no one would love me. Why am I telling you now? Well, on July 13, 1988, I realized God wanted to take the greatest failures and weaknesses of my life and make them my greatest strengths–and that Satan wanted me to keep them hidden so he could use them against me. But like the prostitute, Mary Magdalene, I realized that to hide those things kept me from fellowship and freely loving the One I loved the most–Jesus. Not only this, but if I confessed my past freely, Satan would have no ammunition against me. So here’s what I did. In July of 1988, I shared what I just told you (in a much more brief way!) with my church…and something beautiful took place. People began to come out of the woodwork who had been hurting just like me and even more so, men and women who were involved in homosexuality (sodomy), women who were abused by their fathers, those who had been raped and never told anyone, and even those who had abortions, etc. As they confessed their sins and hurts, Jesus was able to begin healing all their past. On that day, I publicly laid down my life and my reputation to serve Jesus in an awesome way. However, I want my life to be broken and poured out life the perfume Mary Magdalene used to wash Jesus’ feet even though they said she was foolish. I want to lay down my life and reputation for others just as my Lord Jesus did for me. Imagine that–the perfect King of the Universe humbled Himself and gave up all His power and glory because He loves me! I can do no less!

Since the day I first shared my past publicly, God has called me to tell others what He has done for me–to lead and call others into intimacy with Jesus through the avenue of music and worship. It was after such a time of sharing in my hometown of Boynton in 1989 that I began to realize the true depth and extent of God’s great love for me and the calling upon my life and the role of my grandmother Jernigan’s vision and prayer upon my ministry. After leading worship at the Boynton Community Center, one of my grandma’s old prayer partners said to me, “Isn’t it wonderful how your grandmother’s prayers have been answered?” Amid feelings of shock and tears of joy, I asked, “What prayers?” And she answered, “Didn’t you know? Your grandmother told me how she would stand behind you as you practiced the piano at her house each day and would ask god to use you mightily in His kingdom to lead in music and worship! And He has answered her prayers!”

Your circumstances, your sins, your wounds, etc., may all be different than mine, but the answer is still the same–Jesus.

Your circumstances, your sins, your wounds, etc., may all be different than mine, but the answer is still the same–Jesus. You may have been sinned against and wounded very deeply. For those times you are not guilty! If you have been used or abused in any way, you can be healed. Do not receive the false guilt that Satan would try to put on you because of circumstances that were beyond your control. I urge you to deal with your own heart and the things you were (and are) responsible for–like attitudes, actions, thoughts, and feelings! There is hope for the hurting. If you are like me, you may need radical surgery. Surgery may take more time than it takes to put a Band-Aid on a wound. But surgery generally gets to the cause and doesn’t just cover up or pacify the symptoms of the wound. If you are willing, you can get to the root(s) of your sin(s). I urge you to get to the root of and deal with whatever you may be facing.

I’ve been there and found the way out, and I must share my story–the story of Jesus with those who are hurting. Aren’t we all hurting in one-way or another?

The bottom line is this: I can’t make it one day without the Lord. I ask Him to fill me with His spirit day-by-day and moment-by-moment and to lead me. You see, we are all helpless and in need of a Father to care for us. And He is the Father Who will never leave us or forsake us. He is the Father Who enjoys our presence more than we could ever enjoy His! I am no longer afraid of what others think of me (at least I’m asking the Lord to help me in that area!). Please pray for me and my family as we seek God’s direction for our lives. I love you.

In His Love and Grace,
Dennis

Then around the age of 16, I first understood that Darwinism provided an explanation big enough and eloquent enough to replace God. I have been an atheist ever since. It was hard to be an atheist before Darwin, the illusion of design is so overwhelming.”  -Richard Dawkins, famous evolutionist

“Evolution is the greatest engine of atheism invented by the mind of man.”  -Richard Dawkins

“As far as Christianity was concerned, the advent of the theory of evolution and the elimination of traditional teleological thinking was catastrophic.—Despite the attempt by liberal Christianity to disguise the point, no biblically derived religion can really be compromised with the fundamental assertion of Darwinian theory.”      Evolution, A Theory in Crisis,  -Michael Denton

“More cases of loss of religious faith can be traced to the theory of evolution— than anything else.”        -Martin Lings, quoted in Christian Century  July, 1982.

“Darwinism removed the whole idea of God as the creator.. from rational discussion.”    -Julian Huxley, famous biologist and statesman.

“Darwin pointed out that no supernatural designer was needed; since natural selection could account for any known– life, there was no room for a supernatural agency in its evolution.” -Francis Ayala, notable evolutionist

When asked what he believed:  Bertrand Russell, famous atheist said (paraphrase:) I believe in evolution which leads to greater and greater human beings.

Evolution is the foundational statement of the atheistic Humanist Manifesto.

“..God’s role has been diminished over the eons.  First we had God making Adam and …every creature with his hands….Then we had the God who sets evolution in motion. And then you don’t even need that God, –the law giver– because, if we take the ideas from cosmology seriously, then there are other places and other laws and life evolves where it can. So…now just…God, the master of ceremonies (who) does not actually play any role any more in the universe and no longer intervenes in any way.”  -Daniel Dennett, Interview in Der Spiegel.

“Although many details remain to be worked out, it’s already evident that all the objective phenomenon of the history of life can be explained by purely naturalistic factors… Man is the result of a purposeless and naturalistic… process that did not have him in mind.”  -Gaylord Simpson, Noted paleontologist.

“Belief in evolution makes atheists of people. One can have a religious view that is compatible with evolution only if that religious view is indistinguishable from atheism.”  -William Provine,  Professor at Cornell University

Intelligent Design:

“Proponents of ID say some forms of life are so complex they can only be explained by the activity of an unspecified ‘intelligent designer,’ who some say is God.”  Nature

“It is wrong to say there is no way to bridge gaps except for intelligent design.   The whole history of science is that the gaps are always filled.”  Re the bacteria flagellum: “I’m quite sure that within a decade or two we’ll understand where it came from. To give up now is totally ridiculous.”

-Bruce Alberts, President of the National Academy of Science.
“The basic problem I have theologically (with ID) is that God’s activity in the world should be hidden.”   “Primary revelation came through Jesus Christ, and I find it distasteful that additional divine finger prints should appear in nature.”  -George Murphy, Lutheran theologian and physicist.

“I think the most impressive arguments for God are those supported by recent discoveries… argument for intelligent design is enormously stronger than when I first met it.”  -Anthony Flew, famous atheist

“If one proceeds directly…in this matter, without being deflected by a fear of incurring the wrath of scientific opinion, one arrives at the conclusion that biomaterialists (life forms) with their amazing measure of order must be the outcome of intelligent design.”   -Sir Fred Hoyle, atheist, and a prominent astrophysicist of the 20th century.
If I only examined the thumb, I would have to believe in an intelligent designer.      Paraphrase, Sir Isaac Newton.

“The argument for design has always been the best argument for the existence of God,  and when Darwin comes along, he pulls the rug out from that.”  -Daniel Dennett, atheist

“Evolutionary biology has been so hugely unsuccessful as a scientific theory in accounting for the origin of life and the emergence of biological complexity, that it(doesn’t)deserve a monopoly regardless of what state of formation ID has reached. ID is the only alternative to a mechanistic evolutionary biology.”

-William Dembski, mathematician, philosopher, a leader of the ID movement.

“Observation and experiment demonstrate that law-like regularities explain much of nature. The same methods indicate that intelligence accounts for other aspects. It is ludicrous to forbid Fred Hoyle to notice what for all the world looks like design, or..say if he does..that he’s no longer a scientist.”   – Michael Behebiochemist and notable ID supporter.

“..there are no non-design explanations for the molecular machinery of life, only wishful speculation, just so stories”  “Science is an unrestricted search for the truth about nature based on reasoning from physical evidence.  By that light ID is indeed science.”   -Ibid

Problems about Fossil Evidence of Evolution:

“Since paleontology does not shed any light on the genesis of the phyla, one must have recourse to the data drawn from comparative anatomy and embryology.”  -Pierre Grasse, Outstanding French Biologist.

“Fortunately there is a science which is able to observe the progress pf evolution throughout the history of the earth…Paleontology, which studies the fossil remains, is thus enabled to present organic evolution as a visible fact.” -Richard Goldschmidt, atheist, evolutionist

“The fossil record with its abrupt transitions offers no support for gradual change…”    -Stephen Gould, notable evolutionist, atheist

“The Cambrian explosion… most remarkable and puzzling event in the history of life.” Ibid.

“Evolution requires intermediate forms between species and paleontology does not provide them.”  -David Kitts, Geology professor.

Distortions used by Dogmatic Evolutionists:

Dogmatic evolutionists have largely thwarted legislatures, courts and school boards from allowing open and balanced presentations of origins, and their influence has dominated the media. Quotations below were made by evolutionists and are from, That Their Words May Be Used Against Them by Henry Morris. Evolution and Darwinism are used interchangeably below.

  1.   “Evolution … is considered by all those entitled to judgement to be a fact for which no further proof is needed.”  -Richard Goldshmidt   (“It seems at times as if many of our modern writers of evolution have had their views by some sort of revelation… ”  -G. A. Kerkut)
  1.   There is no evidence against evolution, so there is nothing to teach in opposition. (Scientific criticisms of evolution are ubiquitous.)
  1.   Critics of evolution only present negative evidence. (When there are two opposing views, evidence against one would logically support the other.  Also, there is much positive evidence for creation.)
  1.   Creationists are ignorant, dogmatic and liars. One needs an advanced degree in science to criticize evolution. (These insults are wrong at best.  Also, thousands of non-evolutionists have advanced degrees in science.)
  1.   Disputes among evolutionists concern mechanisms and minor points, not evolution as a fact. (Evolutionist H.S. Lipson wrote, “To my mind, the whole theory does not stand up at all.” Much evidence claimed to support evolution has been repudiated or criticized by other evolutionists.)
  1.   A person cannot understand biology without evolution. (G.W. Harper wrote “… if all references to Darwinism suddenly disappeared, biology would remain substantially unchanged.”)
  1.   Those criticizing Darwinism are often labeled fundamentalists or creationists with hidden motives.  (Among notable critics of evolution are old earth theists, agnostics and atheists.)

8. “Explanations employing non-naturalistic events, whether or not explicit reference is made to a supernatural being, are outside the realm of science…”  -National Association of Biology Teachers. (Science means “to know,” and teaching should not have to exclude any reasonable explanation.)

  1.   Teaching creation in public schools is forbidden by the courts and constitution. (That is doubtful, but legal decisions, at least until the Dover case, allow criticism and alternative views to be presented.)
  1.   Evolution is not against religion, and parents should not be concerned about it.  (“Darwinism removed the whole idea of God as the creator…from rational discussion.” -Julian Huxley.  Evolution is the most frequent issue raised by students to noted youth speaker Josh McDowell.)

Some tactics of evolutionists are: excluding opposing views from classrooms, allowing disproved or very questionable evidences in textbooks, falsely accusing and vilifying their opponents, and trying to fire or silence teachers who openly question evolution.

Information about the above is available from the Frederick Creation Society.

General Quotes about Evolution:

“The fact that a theory so vague, so insufficiently verifiable, and so far from the criteria other- wise applied in ‘hard’ science has become a dogma can only be explained on sociological grounds.”  Ludwig von Bertalanffy, Biologist

“A growing number of respectable scientists are defecting from the evolutionary camp…moreover for the most part these ‘experts’ have abandoned Darwinism not on the basis of religious faith or biblical persuasion, but on strictly scientific grounds, and in some instances regretfully.”  Wolfgang Smith, Physicist

“I think the most impressive arguments {for God} are those supported by recent scientific discoveries…argument for intelligent design is enormously stronger than when I first met it.”  Anthony Flew, well known atheist, 2004

“The influence of evolutionary theory on fields far removed from biology is one of the most spectacular examples in history of how a highly speculative idea for which there is no really hard scientific evidence can come to fashion the thinking of a whole society and dominate the outlook of an age.”  Michael Denton,Evolution, A Theory In Crisis

“Evolutionary biology has been so hugely unsuccessful as a scientific theory in accounting for the origin of life and the emergence of biological complexity, that it does not deserve a monopoly, regardless of what state of formation Intelligent Design has reached.  I.D. is logically the only alternative to a mechanistic evolutionary biology.”  William Dembski, 2002 I.D. symposium.

” I later reverted to pantheism when I realized the shattering complexity and beauty of the living world. Then, around the age of 16,  I first understood that Darwinism provided an explanation big enough and elegant enough to replace God. I have been an atheist ever since.  It was hard to be an atheist before Darwin; the illusion of living design is so overwhelming” Richard Dawkins

“One may find it hard to believe that all this is a result of natural selection, but as Charles Darwin wrote, ‘the problem is not so much with our intellect as our imagination.’  These olympians of the animal world are the result of the miracle of evolution.”  PBS, “Olympians of the Animal World”

“We now learn that the Theory of Evolution rests strictly on no proof at all.  In a word we are dealing with a religion.”   Jean Francois Ravel, writer for the French Express.

“Our theory of evolution has become one which cannot be refuted by any conceivable observation. Ideas based on guesses or a few limited experiments have attained currency far beyond their validity.”   Paul Ehrlich and L.C. Birch

Origin of Life:

“There is no known law of nature no process and no known sequence of events which can cause information to originate by itself in matter.”  -Dr. Verner Gitt, information theory expert

“We have a rough idea when it began on earth and some interesting theories about where, but the how part has everyone stumped. Nobody knows how chemicals organized themselves into the first living cell.”  -Paul Davies

“Many investigators feel uneasy about stating in public that the origin of life is a mystery, even though behind closed doors they freely admit they are baffled. There seem to be two reasons for this unease.  Firstly, they feel it opens the door to religious fundamentalists and the god of the gaps of pseudoscience. Secondly, they worry that a frank admission of ignorance will undermine funding, especially for the search for life in space. -Ibid

“In my opinion there is no basis in known chemistry for the belief that long sequences of reactions can organize spontaneously – and every reason to believe that they cannot.  The problem of achieving sufficient specificity, whether in aqueous solution or on the surface of a mineral, is so severe that the chance of closing a cycle of reactions as complex as the reverse citric acid cycle, for example, is negligible.”  – Leslie Orgel

“It has become inordinately difficult to even begin to think of the construction of a naturalistic theory of the evolution of that first reproducing organism.  –Philosophy Now.

“One has only to contemplate the magnitude of this task to concede that the spontaneous origin of a living organism is impossible.  Yet here we are as a result, I believe, of spontaneous generation.”  -George Wald

“The notion that not only the polymers but the operating program of a living cell could be arrived at by chance in a primordial soup here on earth is evidently nonsense of the highest order.”  -Hoyle and Wickramasinghe

Bias:

“How quickly men could accept the most outrageous of lies once the truth was removed from consideration.”   – Frank Peretti, Piercing the Darkness.

“Anything that we scientists can do to weaken the hold of religion should be done, and may in the end be our greatest contribution to civilization.”   – Steven Weinberg, Noble Physics prize winner, N.Y.Times 11/21/06  (This idea did not help the Soviet Union, China and Nazi Germany)

“The whole enterprise of science is to explain life without invoking supernatural explanations. Intelligent design is not science.  If it is religion, it should not be taught in science class.” _Orthodox Jewish scientist.  (This view conveniently serves evolutionists.  Science, properly, should follow evidence where it leads.)

“Biologists must constantly keep in mind that what they see was not designed, but rather evolved”  – Francis Crick, Nobel Prize winner for co-discovery of the Double Helix.  What Mud Produced.

“A facade of certainty and unanimity” author unknown, referring to dogmatic proponents of global warming.  It could apply well to evolutionists like Eugenie Scott who said at an atheist’s conference, “anti-evolution is uniformly the product of religious opposition.”  (Many question evolution on solely non-religious grounds).

“I was trying to jam evidence of data into a pattern that would support conclusions about fossils that on closer inspection the fossils themselves would not sustain.”  “It is hard for me to now admit how tangled in that thicket I then was, but the thing about bias is how it does make one deaf to the cries of other evidence.”   – Donald Johanson, Discover of “Lucy” quoted in Lucy Dethroned,  Apologetics Press.

“We have a prior commitment to…materialism…Moreover that materialism is absolute, for we cannot allow a Divine foot in the door.”  – Richard Lewontin.  For the full quote & many others, search Stephen Jones, creation quotes.

About evolution, C.S. Lewis wrote that he could confirm its deception by the vigor with which evolution’s defenders denied any alternative, “the fanatical and twisted attitude of its defenders.” From a letter to Captain Acworth, President of the Evolution Protest Movement.

Did Jesus claim to be the Messiah?

______

Ben Parkinson pictured below:

On November 9, 2014 at Fellowship Bible Church, Ben Parkinson noted in his sermon that Jesus claimed to be the Messiah and that the Jewish leaders knew what Jesus was claiming when Jesus referred to himself as “I AM.”

John 8:57-59 New American Standard Bible (NASB)

57 So the Jews said to Him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham?”58 Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am.”59 Therefore they picked up stones to throw at Him, but Jesus hid Himself and went out of the temple.

Then Ben pointed to the scripture in the Old Testament where Jehovah answers Moses’ important question.

Exodus 3:13-19New American Standard Bible (NASB)

13 Then Moses said to God, “Behold, I am going to the sons of Israel, and I will say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you.’ Now they may say to me, ‘What is His name?’ What shall I say to them?” 14 God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM”; and He said, “Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’” 15 God, furthermore, said to Moses, “Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, ‘The Lord, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.’ This is My name forever, and this is My memorial-name to all generations. 16 Go and gather the elders of Israel together and say to them, ‘The Lord, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, has appeared to me, saying, “I am indeed concerned about you and what has been done to you in Egypt. 17 So I said, I will bring you up out of the affliction of Egypt to the land of the Canaanite and the Hittite and the Amorite and the Perizzite and the Hivite and the Jebusite, to a land flowing with milk and honey.”’ 18 They will pay heed to what you say; and you with the elders of Israel will come to the king of Egypt and you will say to him, ‘The Lord, the God of the Hebrews, has met with us. So now, please, let us go a three days’ journey into the wilderness, that we may sacrifice to the Lord our God.’ 19 But I know that the king of Egypt will not permit you to go, except under compulsion.

Phillips, Craig & Dean – Great I Am (Lyrics)

Published on Mar 17, 2012

“Breathe in” album available now.

I wanna be close, close to Your side
So heaven is real and death is a lie
I wanna hear voices of angels above
Singing as one

Hallelujah, holy, holy
God Almighty, the great I am
Who is worthy, none beside Thee
God Almighty, the great I am

I wanna be near, near to Your heart
Loving the world, hating the dark
I wanna see dry bones living again
Singing as one

The mountains shake before Him
Thee demons run and flee
At the mention of the name, King of majesty
There is no power in hell or any who can stand
Before the power and the presence of the great I am
The great I am, the great I am

The great I am
The great I am
The great I am

When I was 15 I joined my family on an amazing trip with our pastor Adrian Rogers to the land of Israel in 1976 and the most notable event to me was our visit to the Western Wall (or Wailing Wall) where hundreds of orthodox Jews were praying and kissing the wall. At the time we were visiting the wall I noticed that Dr. Rogers was visibly moved to tears because he knew that these Jews had missed the true messiah who had come and died on a cross almost 2000 years before. They were still looking for the messiah to come for the first time sometime in the future.

That one event encouraged my interest in presenting the gospel to the Jews.  At about the same time in Little Rock two Jews by the names of Dr. Charles Barg and Dr. Jack Sternberg were encountering that gospel message.   I have posted before about their life stories and they can be easily found on the internet.

If  someone is truly interested in investigating the Old Testament Scriptures then all they have to do is google “Bible Evidence Archaeology” or  click on the links on my blog http://www.thedailyhatch.org and the evidence is there showing that Christ is the Messiah predicted in the Old Testament. Here are some of my past posts on this subject, 1. My correspondence with Daniel Bell and Irving Kristol about the rebirth of Israel!!!!, 2. My personal visit with Bill Kristol on 7-18-14 in Hot Springs, Arkansas!!!!, 3. Simon Schama’s lack of faith in Old Testament Prophecy, 4. Who are the good guys: Hamas or Israel?, 5. “A Jewish Doctor Speaks Out: Why I Believe that Jesus is the Jewish Messiah” written by Dr. Jack Sternberg (author of the book CHRISTIANITY: THE JEWISH ROOTS), and 6.  Jesus Christ in the Old Testament by Adrian Rogers,

Lou told Rocket to make the play

Almost 24 years later, former Notre Dame star Raghib “Rocket” Ismail still can’t shake off the call that prevented the biggest play of his career.

Ismail was one of the most electrifying players in college football in 1990 and finished second behind Brigham Young quarterback Ty Detmer for the Heisman Trophy.

The Fighting Irish faced Colorado in the 1991 Orange Bowl in Miami, which turned out to be Ismail’s last collegiate game.

Notre Dame trailed Colorado 10-9 with 1:06 remaining and the Buffaloes were forced to punt. Ismail, a junior, was deep to return. He recalled a moment he had with Irish Coach Lou Holtz on the play while speaking at the Little Rock Touchdown Club at the Embassy Suites in Little Rock on Monday.

“I turn to him, and he’s mouthing, ‘Middle return. No fair catch. Middle return,’ ” Ismail said of Holtz, who was Arkansas’ coach in 1977-1983. “I was so confident and I believed. I literally gave him the thumbs up, like, ‘Yeah, Coach. We got you. No problem. Middle return, I got you.’ ”

Ismail returned the punt 92 yards for a touchdown that would have given the Fighting Irish a 15-10 lead with 43 seconds left. However, the touchdown was called back on a clipping penalty.

“And then, the tribulation hits. The tribulation sounded like this in the stadium: ‘There’s a flag on the play.’ ” Ismail said. “The first self-defeating thought I had: ‘Man, I’m tired.’ The second self-defeating thought? ‘They’re not going to kick to us again.’ They removed me from my base of confidence. The third self-defeating thought? ‘Our offense isn’t built to go 90 yards.’ And guess what? Everything I truly believed became reality.”

Colorado (11-1-1) held on to win 10-9 and earned a share of the national championship with Georgia Tech. The Buffaloes were named No. 1 in the Associated Press poll, while Georgia Tech (11-0-1) topped the coaches poll.

Instead of going to the NFL in 1991, Ismail signed a four-year contract worth $18.2 million with the Canadian Football League’s Toronto Argonauts. He spent two years in Canada before going to the NFL, where he played nine seasons with the Los Angeles/Oakland Raiders (1993-1995), Carolina Panthers (1996-1998) and Dallas Cowboys (1999-2001).

This is the first year of the College Football Playoff, which will have four teams compete for a national championship in a system with two semifinal games and a championship. Ismail said he believes that if a playoff was in place for the 1990 season, there wouldn’t have been a split national championship.

“Everybody west of the Mississippi was saying Colorado was the national champion,” Ismail said. “Georgia Tech , that year, was also undefeated. Everybody east of the Mississippi was saying Georgia Tech, or at least in Georgia, or everybody in Atlanta. Now, that argument, if you have that type of scenario, that will be eliminated.

“I think because of that, the playoff is a good thing.”

Ismail, 44, travels around the country as a motivational speaker, but he still finds time to keep up with Notre Dame football. The Fighting Irish, under fifth-year coach Brian Kelly, is 7-1 with its only loss coming at Florida State last month.

Notre Dame’s loss to Alabama in the 2013 national championship was an eye-opener for the Fighting Irish, Ismail said.

“The SEC, I don’t care if people hate on them or not, to me, as far as college football as concerned, that’s the king of the hill,” Ismail said. “You have to compare yourself to the standards they hold and the product they put on the field. When he [Kelly] saw that, it changed his recruiting philosophy. Outside of the call we got two weeks ago at Florida State, I think it’s working.”
