I wrote of series of four posts on the conversion to Christ of Brian Walsh of the heavy metal band Korn and that was because my son Hunter told me about Walsh’s Christian testimony. Then I stumbled on the Christian testimony of Reggie “Fieldy” Arvizu of Korn. This subject has always interested me and I have written about Lou Graham of Foreigner, and Kerry Livgren and Dave Hope and their similar experiences. In all of these cases they convert to Christianity and give their lives totally to Christ and then they are delivered from drugs.

Four years after guitarist Brian “Head” Welch left the popular rock band after a Christian conversion, bass player Fieldy talks to Beliefnet about getting sober and becoming a Christian.

You may have remembered hearing the news back in 2005 that one of the world’s most popular rock bands, Korn, was losing one of its members–to Jesus. Guitarist Brian “Head” Welch” decided that he wanted to make some major changes in his life–to get off drugs and embrace his Christian faith. Unfortunately for Korn fans, he also decided he could no longer stay in the band if he wanted to stay sober and live his faith.

 

Now, another member of the band, bassist Reginald “Fieldy” Arvizu has come out publically as a Christian and has co-authored a book, “Got the Life: My Journey of Addiction, Faith, Recovery, and Korn,” (you can browse the book on Harper Collins’ website) which was released earlier this month. However, unlike Head, Fieldy is determined to remain with the band.

 

In this interview with Beliefnet entertainment editor Dena Ross, Fieldy talks about what brought him to embrace Christianity, how he plans to stay sober, and Korn’s response to his conversion.

 

Your new book begins with a vivid recounting of a night when you were drunk and physically abusive to your wife. Was that your breaking point–when you knew you had to make a really big change?

 

 

That was the beginning of my breaking point. I think it all started coming down when after seven days a week, 20 years straight of partying, my body not being able to take it anymore. And then, to top it off, things like that were happening all the time. That’s one of many stories in the book. And then to really top it off, my dad goes into the hospital and dies.

 

 

 

Your dad was a Christian?

 

 

 

He walked with the Lord for 18 years.

 

 

Did you grow up in a Christian household?

 

 

 

Actually, we never had anything like that. Back in the day if people would even mention the name Jesus, I was like, “What? What’s that?” I didn’t even know. I didn’t know anything.

 

 

 

So he became a Christian when you were older?

 

 

 

Yeah. I already lived on my own. But when we did hang out together, there was something about him—he had so much peace; he was just content. I liked that about him.

 

 

 

Now that you’re a Christian, do you experience that same peace that you saw in him?

 

 

 

Yeah. I think I do. It’s somewhat like peace, but it’s not like you become a Christian and [your] problems go away. I still have my everyday struggles of life and situations that come my way. But I found the difference now is when difficult situations come my way, I’m on a strong foundation and I know how to handle the situation. I don’t know how, but following and walking with Christ, He shows me how.

 

 

 

When exactly was the point when you decided to become a Christian?

 

 

It was probably after my dad’s death. It was a slow process [that] changed me. Actually, it seems really slow, but it goes really fast—it’s been three-and-a-half years. But, it was real casual and slow, and it still is today.

 

 

The only thing that really works for people is loving them where they’re at. To love somebody equals time. You’ve got to give people time and actually hang out [with them]. I guess that’s where my patience comes in. [Some people] dive in so strong and heavy that it’s almost like they’re using it [to] push people away. And I didn’t want to do that. I wasn’t trying to push people away.

 

 

 

Did Brian “Head” Welch [former guitarist for Korn who left the band in 2005 after becoming a Christian] play a role in your embracing Christianity?

 

 

 

I guess he did play a role, in a way, of me almost learning from… not really his mistakes, because that’s his choices of what he wanted to do. But I don’t want to have to quit Korn or do this or do that. I didn’t follow his ways, and I’m glad, because I’m following the way that I’ve been called to follow, and he’s going the way he’s been called to follow. But who knows what tomorrow will bring. Head may be back rocking out with Korn [one day].

 

 

So you’re still with the band, and you plan on staying with them?

 

 

 

Yeah. Korn’s actually in the studio right now with the producer that did the first two Korn albums, Ross Robinson. We’ve been in for about a month—me, [guitarist] Munky and [drummer] Ray Luzier and [singer] Jonathan Davis, and we’re working on a new album. We have a tour coming up April 25th, a U.S. tour. Then we take off to Europe in June for a couple of weeks.

 

 

Like I said, I was real humble, and changed by action, not by words. And action speaks louder than words, so I kind of just [became a Christian] and really never said anything.

 

 

It’s funny, because Jonathan Davis would say something to somebody and he’s, like, “Oh yeah, Fieldy’s a Christian now,” and I’m like, “I never even told you that.” My actions were speaking for me. I’ve had a few friends do that, where I’ve never really said [I became a Christian].

Today I thought I would share an artist that has a direct effect on my art work!  This wonderful painter has been an inspiration to me far before I actually new who she was!  From a young age I’ve loved thrift stores, garage sales, and antique stores.  You can find many prints or similar style paintings like Margaret Keane’s in those locations.  So I was exposed young to the beauty of big eyes.  Those big eyes have always pulled me in and tugged on my heart strings.  It’s as if the eyes speak to me.  Honestly I feel like a nut saying that, but the eye connection is so strong in some paintings its as close to a conversation as a painting can get for me! So when I started sculpting my art dolls and my process started leading me in this big eye, unrealistic style, I decided to just go with it.  I really did try to sculpt realistic faces a few times but it usually just made them look even more alien like!  So I stopped fighting what I thought I had to make and embraced what was naturally happening!  That’s when I started researching other artists who use big eyes and really learnt about Keane’s history.

I found it very interesting to know that her husband actually tried claiming he did the paintings!  I mean seriously what a poop!  So of course when they were getting a divorce in the best way ever she proved the paintings were really hers!  She painted out in the open right infront of the judge and everyone to show the work was really hers.  So when the husband was asked to do the same “I can’t I have a sore shoulder”.  Needless to say, she won the case and has continued to do HER work!

As all artist progress and change through their life and career, Keane’s work has experienced shifts of change.  In her early career her characters or style were known as “Big Eyes”, “Sad eyes”, “Waifs” or simply known as “Keane”.  Many times a tear graced the characters cheek.  However, after the divorce Keane moved to Hawaii and while stylistically the same her paintings became brighter and a bit happier.  Then again later in life after joining a church her paintings became even a bit happier.  So when a tear graced a face, at that point it was of joy not sadness.

Her work was highly criticised in the art world and yet they were some of the best selling art in the Western world in the early 60’s!  You may or may not like them yourselves, but there is no denying Keane’s influence on American pop culture!  A funny fact for me is that Tim Burton is a long time fan and collector of Keane’s work.  Going so far as to commission an art piece, and now working on a movie about her career and court battle with her ex-husband!  Although that movie has been talked about for a while, I’m still waiting patiently for something to actually happen with that!  I find it funny because I get so many people coming into the gallery saying “this is very Tim Burton like” or referencing him somehow.  Which I really don’t mind because I love his work, but in reality I didn’t even consiously think about his work when making mine!  I looked at a lot of Keane, Mark Ryden, and Katie Olivias for stylistic inspiration and a myriad of other art doll makers for technical know how.  So now seeing that our inspirations crossed paths is a funny little tidbit for me.

Keane is now located in San Francisco where you can visit Keane Eyes Gallery and see her work first hand.  It is by appointment though so don’t be a dummy like me and think you can walk there and go right in.  Or you’ll end up peering through the windows like me!  Have you seen her work or similar work before?  Or have you seen how it has influenced pop culture at all?

(Pa, B, PC, Fe, C, FR, LL, V, S, N, A, D, M) Light mixed pagan worldview with some moral statements against lying, manipulation and deceit, but also some subtle politically correct, feminist elements, but female protagonist does respect the Bible (even though she becomes a Jehovah’s Witness) and at one point says, “Only God could create theses colors”; seven obscenities and eight profanities (including abusing Jesus’s name), plus an obscene gesture; light violence includes husband threatens his wife and even tries to start a fire in a room she’s in, a man is punched; no sexual content, but married couple kiss and married man flirts with other women; no nudity but some female cleavage and women in swimsuits; moderate wine drinking; no drug use, but some smoking; and, lots of lying, manipulation, deceit and illegal fraud, but this is not condoned and is eventually made right.


Summary:

BIG EYES is a biopic about Margaret Keane, whose paintings became a worldwide phenomenon in the 1950’s but her husband took all the credit for them. BIG EYES is an entertaining movie with terrific performances, but it has some mixed messages (both positive and negative) and some foul language requiring caution.


Review:

BIG EYES is a biopic directed by Tim Burton about Margaret Keane and her famous paintings that became a phenomenon in the 1950s and 60s.

The movie begins with Margaret (Amy Adams) leaving her abusive husband Frank and escaping to San Francisco with their daughter. Making a living from doing street portraits, Margaret meets the suave Walter Keane, a fellow painter who compliments her artwork. When Frank threatens to take custody of their daughter because Margaret isn’t a good provider, Walter proposes to Margaret they get married, and he’ll take care of them. Even though she hardly knows Walter, she agrees and the two get married.

One day while trying sell some of his own artwork at a club, someone takes an interest in his wife’s work, a painting of a little girl with abnormally large eyes. In order to make the sale, Walter takes credit for the work. After some strategic press, the paintings start selling off the wall.

When Margaret finds out Walter has been taking all the credit for her paintings, she’s upset, but too soft spoken to do anything about it. Walter says they’re married, so who gets the credit doesn’t really matter, and the money is good.

The big eye’d paintings become a major hit, and Walter smartly starts selling print outs of the unique pictures. Margaret continues to secretly paint while Walter takes all the credit and pulls in a fortune. The longer they do this, the guiltier Margaret becomes for all their lies. Eventually, Walter becomes increasingly threatening, and Margaret is forced to leave him. Years later, she decides to step up and take credit for all her work. Walter and Margaret take the issue to court, where there are a couple very funny scenes.

BIG EYES is a very interesting movie from Tim Burton. It’s also one of the least strange movies he’s done. One can’t help but be empathetic for Amy Adams as Margaret. Amy gives a subtle, yet very effective performance as a conflicted woman. The extremely talented Christoph Waltz also excels in his role as the cunningly smart and eventually despicable Walter. BIG EYES doesn’t stand out like Margaret’s paintings do, but it’s an entertaining movie nonetheless.

BIG EYES has some mixed messages. One can’t help but hope Margaret will find the courage to reveal the truth of her situation. Thus, the movie shows lying, manipulation and deceit in a negative light. That being said, the movie has a subtle politically correct, feminist tone. While Margaret is indeed treated unfairly and unjustly, some parts of the movie seem unlikely and anachronistic. For example, when Margaret’s conscience tells her that lying is wrong, she asks a priest for advice, and he tells her to just “submit to her husband,” without asking her any more questions. For a priest to tell her to disobey God over her husband is both unbiblical and unrealistic in the way it’s portrayed. Eventually, Margaret becomes a Jehovah’s Witness, which gives her a newfound sense of what’s morally right and wrong. It also gives her the confidence to stand up to Walter. BIG EYES also contains some strong foul language, however. So, caution is advised.

BIG EYES is a very interesting movie from Tim Burton. It’s also one of the least strange, most entertaining movies he’s done. One can’t help but be empathetic for Amy Adams as Margaret. She delivers a subtle, yet effective performance as a conflicted woman. Sadly, there are some mixed messages in BIG EYES. It has a spiritual dimension that extols honesty and rebukes lying and manipulation, but there’s also a feminist, politically correct tone. So, caution is advised.

Mr. Turek: He is all-powerful and he hasn’t removed evil yet, but he will. Actually he won’t remove it, he’ll quarantine it. That’s exactly what Hell is. In Hell you’ll have free will. You know I get the question all the time “Will God send me to Hell because I don’t believe in Jesus?” The answer is “No, you don’t go to Hell because you don’t believe in Jesus, you go to Hell because you’ve sinned.” It would be like saying you died because you didn’t go to the doctor. No, you didn’t die because you didn’t go to the doctor. You died because you had a disease. Now if you had gone to the doctor perhaps you could have prevented death, just like if you go to the Great Physician you can prevent eternal death. And so the point here is is that people go to Hell because they’ve chosen to sin and they have not chosen the pardon. But God will not force you into Heaven against your will. If you don’t want God now you will not want him in eternity. So people who go to Hell, which is separation from God, go there justly. If God exists and if there is an afterlife, there are only two possibly places. You’re either going to be with God or without God in the afterlife. In fact, I… just give me two minutes here because this happened in a debate I had with Eddie Tabash–who by the way is a good guy objectively.

When Science Points To God

Contemporary atheism marches behind the banner of science. It is perhaps no surprise that several leading atheists—from biologist Richard Dawkins to cognitive psychologist Steven Pinker to physicist Victor Stenger—are also leading scientists. The central argument of these scientific atheists is that modern science has refuted traditional religious conceptions of a divine creator.

But of late atheism seems to be losing its scientific confidence. One sign of this is the public advertisements that are appearing in billboards from London to Washington DC. Dawkins helped pay for a London campaign to put signs on city buses saying, “There’s probably no God. Now stop worrying and enjoy your life.” Humanist groups in America have launched a similar campaign in the nation’s capital. “Why believe in a god? Just be good for goodness sake.” And in Colorado atheists are sporting billboards apparently inspired by John Lennon: “Imagine…no religion.”

What is striking about these slogans is the philosophy behind them. There is no claim here that God fails to satisfy some criterion of scientific validation. We hear nothing about how evolution has undermined the traditional “argument from design.” There’s not even a whisper about how science is based on reason while Christianity is based on faith.

Instead, we are given the simple assertion that there is probably no God, followed by the counsel to go ahead and enjoy life. In other words, let’s not let God and his commandments spoil all the fun. “Be good for goodness sake” is true as far as it goes, but it doesn’t go very far. The question remains: what is the source of these standards of goodness that seem to be shared by religious and non-religious people alike? Finally John Lennon knew how to compose a tune but he could hardly be considered a reliable authority on fundamental questions. His “imagine there’s no heaven” sounds visionary but is, from an intellectual point of view, a complete nullity.

If you want to know why atheists seem to have given up the scientific card, the current issue of Discover magazine provides part of the answer. The magazine has an interesting story by Tim Folger which is titled “Science’s Alternative to an Intelligent Creator.” The article begins by noting “an extraordinary fact about the universe: its basic properties are uncannily suited for life.” As physicist Andrei Linde puts it, “We have a lot of really, really strange coincidences, and all of these coincidences are such that they make life possible.”

Too many “coincidences,” however, imply a plot. Folger’s article shows that if the numerical values of the universe, from the speed of light to the strength of gravity, were even slightly different, there would be no universe and no life. Recently scientists have discovered that most of the matter and energy in the universe is made up of so-called “dark” matter and “dark” energy. It turns out that the quantity of dark energy seems precisely calibrated to make possible not only our universe but observers like us who can comprehend that universe.

Even Steven Weinberg, the Nobel laureate in physics and an outspoken atheist, remarks that “this is fine-tuning that seems to be extreme, far beyond what you could imagine just having to accept as a mere accident.” And physicist Freeman Dyson draws the appropriate conclusion from the scientific evidence to date: “The universe in some sense knew we were coming.”

Folger then admits that this line of reasoning makes a number of scientists very uncomfortable. “Physicists don’t like coincidences.” “They like even less the notion that life is somehow central to the universe, and yet recent discoveries are forcing them to confront that very idea.”

There are two hurdles here, one historical and the other methodological. The historical hurdle is that science has for three centuries been showing that man does not occupy a privileged position in the cosmos, and now it seems like he does. The methodological hurdle is what physicist Stephen Hawking once called “the problem of Genesis.” Science is the search for natural explanations for natural phenomena, and what could be more embarrassing than the finding that a supernatural intelligence transcending all natural laws is behind it all?

Consequently many physicists are exploring an alternative possibility: multiple universes. This is summed up as follows: “Our universe may be but one of perhaps infinitely many universes in an inconceivably vast multiverse.” Folger says that “short of invoking a benevolent creator” this is the best that modern science can do. For contemporary physicists, he writes, this “may well be the only viable nonreligious explanation” for our fine-tuned universe.

The appeal of multiple universes—perhaps even an infinity of universes—is that when there are billions and billions of possibilities, then even very unlikely outcomes are going to be realized somewhere. Consequently if there was an infinite number of universes, something like our universe is certain to appear at some point. What at first glance seems like incredible coincidence can be explained as the result of a mathematical inevitability.

The only difficulty, as Folger makes clear, is that there is no empirical evidence for the existence of any universes other than our own. Moreover, there may never be such evidence. That’s because if there are other universes, they will operate according to different laws of physics than the ones in our universe, and consequently they are permanently and inescapably inaccessible to us. The article in Discover concludes on a somber note. While some physicists are hoping the multiverse will produce empirical predictions that can be tested, “for many physicists, however, the multiverse remains a desperate measure ruled out by the impossibility of confirmation.”

No wonder atheists are sporting billboards asking us to “imagine…no religion.” When science, far from disproving God, seems to be pointing with ever-greater precision toward transcendence, imagination and wishful thinking seem all that is left for the atheists to count on.

I saw this movie the other day and I enjoyed it very much. I have posted many things in the past that refer to Stephen Hawking and his works. My favorite review had this quote below in it.

Much can be said about the brilliance of Stephen Hawking’s mind and how he has survived so many years with MND. Spiritually speaking, could it be that God is giving Stephen time? Time to come to know Him and that, beyond all Stephen’s theories, God is profoundly the Great I Am.

I wish Stephen Hawking to take time to read the work of Dr. Henry F. Schaefer. He speaks of Jane and Stephen in his work.

God and Stephen Hawking (John Lennox refutes “The Grand Design”)

I was reading an excellent article this morning by Dr. John Lennox, professor of Mathematics at the University of Oxford, refuting the concepts contained in Dr. Stephen Hawking‘s book, The Grand Design. The article was contained in Dr. Ravi Zacharias‘ fine publication, Just Thinking.

Having read Stephen Hawking’s book, I thought John Lennox put into words what I would say about this book myself. This is not a book of hard science, as Dr. Hawking would have us believe, but rather a book of Philosophy (which Dr. Hawking ironically seems to feel is now useless) and Metaphysics. Far from giving us a definite Scientific explanation for how the universe created itself through the laws of physics (the book’s stated goal), it hypothesizes about many non-proven theories that are really speculative science-fiction, rather than observable science.

John Lennox demonstrates how the existence of the laws of Physics (Gravity for example) do NOT disprove the existence of God (as Stephen Hawking claims), but are rather evidence for Him. I am thankful for brilliant scholars like Dr. Lennox who are willing to challenge the intellectual elite and expose when they are merely promoting a presuppositional bias, rather than doing real Science.

I would also encourage you to watch this lecture by Dr. Lennox where he explains his objections to this book in more detail.

I wrote of series of four posts on the conversion to Christ of Brian Walsh of the heavy metal band Korn and that was because my son Hunter told me about Walsh’s Christian testimony. Then I stumbled on the Christian testimony of Reggie “Fieldy” Arvizu of Korn. This subject has always interested me and I have written about Lou Graham of Foreigner, and Kerry Livgren and Dave Hope and their similar experiences. In all of these cases they convert to Christianity and give their lives totally to Christ and then they are delivered from drugs.

Reginald Quincy “Fieldy” Arvizu (born November 2, 1969 in Los Angeles County, California)[1] is the bassist for the nu metal band Korn, and guitarist for the hard rock band StillWell.

Musical career

Prior to Arvizu’s time in Korn, he and Brian Welch, who would later become one of Korn’s two guitarists (alongside James Shaffer), had played together in a number of bands, having become friends while still at school. Upon their graduation from high school, Arvizu, Welch, Shaffer, and drummer David Silveria relocated from Bakersfield to Los Angeles and Arvizu, Shaffer, and Silveria formed L.A.P.D (the name first stood for “Love and Peace, Dude”, but this abbreviation was later changed to “Laughing As People Die”). Although L.A.P.D. did succeed in signing a record deal, their success was limited until the band hired singer Jonathan Davis and changed their name to Korn.

The name “Fieldy” is said to have come about as an inside joke. Originally, his band mates called him “Gopher”, due to his large cheeks. Gopher quickly became “Gar”, Gar became “Garfield” (based on the comic strip character of the same name), and eventually “Gar” was dropped and a “y” was added to “Field”, which became Fieldy.[2] His full moniker is “Fieldy Snuts”, which when spoken aloud sounds like “feel these nuts”.

He plays a five-string Ibanez model SDGR SR1305, named the K-5, which is his signature bass.

His playing style consists of slapping, standard finger-style plucking, and left-hand muting; his standard tuning is: A, D, G, C, F. He states Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers as being one of the main influences towards his playing style. He has also stated to have been influenced by Billy Gould from Faith No More.

Fieldy is also one of the main songwriters in Korn. The majority of his bass riffs are hip-hop inspired. He says he gets inspiration from anything hip-hop. On the business side of Korn, Fieldy is responsible for all Korn merchandise, its buying and selling. He will come up with a number of designs, shows them to the band and they either approve or disapprove.[citation needed]

In August 2012 it was reported that Fieldy would be taking a brief break from Korn as his wife Dena was expecting a child. Korn began touring through Eastern Europe, Russia and India throughout August and September 2012 with fill in Bassist Ryan Martinie from Mudvayne.

Life outside Korn

In addition to Korn, he has a rap side project called Fieldy’s Dreams. Fieldy’s Dreams has released one album titled Rock’n Roll Gangster.

Fieldy married girlfriend Dena Beber on Tuesday, 16 May 2006. Korn’s guitarist, Munky played nylon guitar at the wedding. It is her first marriage and his third. Fieldy has two daughters, Sarina and Olivia Arvizu, from his second marriage from Shela Arvizu; he and his current wife Dena had a son in early 2007 and named him Israel. Following the death of his father, Fieldy became a born-again Christian.[3][4][5]

Fieldy has stated that his second album, Bassically, is still in the works. Originally intended to be a hardcore rap album, Fieldy has scrapped the original idea in favor of a jazz fusion style.[citation needed]

Fieldy is currently working with independent rap artist Q-Unique on a side project called StillWell. The song “Killing Myself To Live” can be heard on their MySpace page. Stillwell’s debut album, Dirtbag, is set to be released on May 10, 2011.

Fieldy was also working on his own clothing line Immanuel one twenty three; when asked about it while backstage at the West Palm Beach stop of the Mayhem Festival in 2010, he stated that it was “much harder than he had previously expected” to start a clothing line, and has moved on to the side project that he can “be more proud of, opposed to his first solo CD under Fieldy’s Dreams titled Rock’n Roll Gangster”

Got The Life: My Journey of Addiction, Faith, Recovery and Korn is a memoir Fieldy penned, which hit shelves March 10, 2009. His autobiography tells the story of how he found God, quit drugs, and found the better part of himself.[6]

Fieldy has a tattoo that was done by Limp Bizkit frontman Fred Durst while he still worked in a tattoo parlour.

Eric Blair of “The Blairing Out With Eric Blair Show“ recently conducted an interview with KORN bassist Reginald “Fieldy” Arvizu at this year’s NAMM (National Association Of Music Merchants) show, which was held January 14-17, 2010 at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California. KORN will top the bill on this summer’s Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival tour, which is scheduled to kick off on July 10 in San Bernardino, California.

The Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival will be the first major city tour for KORN in support of the band’s ninth studio album, tentatively titled “Korn III – Remember Who You Are”. The new album marks the return of producer Ross Robinson, who worked with KORN on their first two releases, “Korn” and “Life is Peachy”. Lead vocalist Jonathan Davis has said that the new material matches the pure raw emotion of KORN‘s early releases while the current touring band has never been tighter.

“We experimented with a lot of cool stuff on our last two records [2005’s ‘See You On The Other Side’ and 2007’s untitled effort], but we didn’t want to do another record like that,” Davis explained to Revolver magazine. “So we said, ‘Let’s strip it back again. Let’s do this as a four-piece and make it real raw like the old stuff.”

KORN‘s forthcoming effort was tracked last October at the band’s studio. “We recorded everything on tape, just like we did in the old days,” said Davis. “And we didn’t stack four or five vocal parts like I usually do. I’m singing one part for every song, which was scary. It’s just me and the microphone, and you can really hear the emotion.”

I saw this movie the other day and I enjoyed it very much. I have posted many things in the past that refer to Stephen Hawking and his works. My favorite review had this quote below in it.

Much can be said about the brilliance of Stephen Hawking’s mind and how he has survived so many years with MND. Spiritually speaking, could it be that God is giving Stephen time? Time to come to know Him and that, beyond all Stephen’s theories, God is profoundly the Great I Am.

I wish Stephen Hawking to take time to read the work of Dr. Henry F. Schaefer. He speaks of Jane and Stephen in his work.

I loved this article written about Hawking’s statement that we must make the most of this life because there is no heaven and that is why I posted it today.

Here is a quote that the article that really hits the nail on the head:

Hawking appears to believe that we have to choose between belief in heaven and belief in the value of our earthly actions. In this regard, Hawking misses something essential about the Christian understand of life beyond this life. Christians do not believe that we have to choose between heaven and earth. In fact, the promise of heaven becomes, for Christians, a strong motivator to live this life to the fullest…. For one thing, the New Testament affirms that in the life beyond this life our actions on earth will be judged. The vision of final judgment motivates many believers to seek to do what’s right in this life, no matter how seemingly insignificant their impact might be. Thus, many Christians feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, welcome the stranger, clothe the naked, visit the sick and the prisoner, not only because of love for the needy, but also because we believe that in the last judgment, those actions will be recognized by God and received as acts of worship (see Matthew 25:31-46).

The Woody Allen movie CRIMES AND MISDEMEANORS makes the same point. If there is no afterlife then why can’t we do want what we want in this life without any consequences of judgment or rewards in the afterlife? I actually wrote a review of this movie for my church online magazine. 

“There Is No Heaven” – What the Faith of Stephen Hawking Misses

In yesterday’s post, I began to consider the “faith” of Stephen Hawking. He expressed this faith in a recent interview with the Guardian:

“I have lived with the prospect of an early death for the last 49 years. I’m not afraid of death, but I’m in no hurry to die. I have so much I want to do first,” he said.

“I regard the brain as a computer which will stop working when its components fail. There is no heaven or afterlife for broken down computers; that is a fairy story for people afraid of the dark,” he added.

Hawking has faith that there is no heaven. This is not something he can know as a scientist. Rather, it is a matter of belief beyond evidence. In common English, it’s faith.

There is another element in Hawking’s faith that I heartily endorse. It emerges in this segment from the Guardian story:

In the interview, Hawking rejected the notion of life beyond death and emphasised the need to fulfil our potential on Earth by making good use of our lives. In answer to a question on how we should live, he said, simply: “We should seek the greatest value of our action.”

Hawking believes that we need to make good use of our lives on earth. This, I note, is also a matter of faith, or at last a matter of non-scientific knowledge. Science cannot dictate how we should live. That’s the realm of ethics, even religion, even, yes, faith. Thus, Hawking can affirm: “We should seek the greatest value of our action.” This “should” is not something that can be proved through science.

I don’t mean this as a criticism, mind you. In fact, I completely agree with Hawking that “we should seek the greatest value of our action.” I also believe that we need to make good use of our lives on earth. I can’t prove these convictions scientifically. Nevertheless, I take these matters of faith to be true in a way that is both reasonable and faithful.

Hawking appears to believe that we have to choose between belief in heaven and belief in the value of our earthly actions. In this regard, Hawking misses something essential about the Christian understand of life beyond this life. Christians do not believe that we have to choose between heaven and earth. In fact, the promise of heaven becomes, for Christians, a strong motivator to live this life to the fullest.

To be sure, some Christians have taken a different course, living for life after death and minimizing the value of earthly life. But this course misses the distinctive vision of the New Testament. For one thing, the New Testament affirms that in the life beyond this life our actions on earth will be judged. The vision of final judgment motivates many believers to seek to do what’s right in this life, no matter how seemingly insignificant their impact might be. Thus, many Christians feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, welcome the stranger, clothe the naked, visit the sick and the prisoner, not only because of love for the needy, but also because we believe that in the last judgment, those actions will be recognized by God and received as acts of worship (see Matthew 25:31-46).

But, the Christian vision of the age to come (that which we often call heaven) offers more than the threat and promise of final judgment. It also includes a vision of life that is both beautiful and inspirational. In the closing chapters of Revelation, for example, the vision of a new heaven and earth includes God’s dwelling with people, wiping away every tear. All nations dwell together in peace as they walk in God’s own light. This apocalyptic vision stirs Christians to act today in light of the promise of the future.

Stephen Hawking and his supporters might well say that this sort of thing is unnecessary, that people can act with significance and compassion apart from belief in heaven. I agree, though I’ll find this argument even more persuasive when hospitals begin to be identified as “Atheist Memorial” rather than “Baptist Memorial,” and when the agnostic version of World Vision feeds millions of hungry children each day. But my point is not that one must believe in heaven in order to do good works. Christopher Hitchens has done many extraordinary good works in his life and he is not exactly a big advocate of the afterlife. Rather, my point is that Hawking misunderstands the Christian sense of heaven if he sees belief in heaven as somehow minimizing the value of this life. I would argue, in light of Scripture and my experience, that belief in heaven can, in fact, lead us to live on earth with more gusto and generosity.

This brings me back to Jesus and his teaching about the kingdom of God, which is sometimes rendered as the kingdom of heaven. Jesus proclaims the coming of God’s reign, not so that believers might neglect this life, but so that they might live today with greater purpose. Moreover, heaven serves as a model for how we are to live today. Thus, Jesus taught us to pray, “Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” If heaven is the place there the lion lies down with the lamb, where swords are turned into implements for farming, where divisions and conflicts between people have been abolished, then we are to pray for the presence of heaven on earth, at least in part. And what we ask for in prayer, we are to live out in our daily lives.

I saw this movie the other day and I enjoyed it very much. I have posted many things in the past that refer to Stephen Hawking and his works. My favorite review had this quote below in it.

Much can be said about the brilliance of Stephen Hawking’s mind and how he has survived so many years with MND. Spiritually speaking, could it be that God is giving Stephen time? Time to come to know Him and that, beyond all Stephen’s theories, God is profoundly the Great I Am.

I wish Stephen Hawking to take time to read the work of Dr. Henry F. Schaefer. He speaks of Jane and Stephen in his work.

“The Theory of Everything” Explains Hawking’s Life and Loves

With more romance than science, there’s real chemistry here.

So you say you don’t quite have a handle on singularities, the mechanics of black holes, quantum fluctuations or the wave function theory of the universe? Well, not to worry, you don’t have to know any of that egghead stuff to watch “The Theory of Everything.” This new biopic detailing the relationship between famed theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking and his first wife, Jane, actually has precious little to do with the workings of the universe and much more to do with the workings of the heart.

That’s really no big surprise considering the primary source material for the screenplay comes from Jane’s memoirs rather than Stephen’s. The former Ms. Wilde mastered in European literature, after all, and not physics. That’s where the movie begins, with both Jane and Stephen in college, having a meet­-cute at a social function.Jane has been dragged to the party by friends hoping to set her up with someone physically suitable, but she is immediately drawn to the more intellectually stimulating Stephen, a brilliant, though somewhat lackadaisical, science student.

Rather than engage in trivial banter, the two immediately begin to discuss more weighty matters, including the young Hawking’s insistence that there is no God, a belief that will become a lifelong point of contention for the staunchly Anglican Jane. The only thing cosmologists worship, Stephen insists, is the idea of discovering one scientific theory that will unify all things.

On the cusp of formulating his first major thesis regarding black holes, Hawking is informed by doctors that he has amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, better known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, and is given two years to live. Despite this seeming death sentence, Jane still insists on getting married, ignoring the protestations of family members and Stephen himself who, ever the scientist, insists her declarations of love must be a false conclusion.

The film moves rather briskly from there, hitting upon the highlights and low points of the pair’s thirty-year marriage. Even as Stephen’s fame increases, his body deteriorates, putting more and more of a strain on Jane as she takes on the burdens of being a wife, mother, nurse and secretary. Seeking some outlet of her own, Jane joins the church choir where she meets Jonathan Hellyer Jones, the man whom she will eventually develop romantic feelings for. The marriage finally dissolves when Stephen falls in love with one of his nurses.

It’s all pretty standard by­-the­-book romantic drama material, and with less capable actors, the whole affair could easily sink into Lifetime movie territory. Fortunately, Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones turn in career-making performances. Redmayne is a cinch for an Academy Award nomination, not only for perfectly capturing the tics and contortions that come with Hawking’s ailment, but also for managing to convey complex emotions with nothing but the movement of his eyes. Really, the only downside to his performance is that in the early scenes he distractingly looks like a young Austin Powers, but that passes quickly. In a just world, Jones would also earn a nomination for her portrayal of the heroically stoic Jane, but the performance is so understated, so very British, it may sadly pass beneath the Academy’s radar.

Alas, the performances can’t hide all of the film’s problems. Like most biopics of beloved pop culture personalities, “The Theory of Everything” polishes up some of the rough edges of its characters.Take Hawking’s evangelical atheism for example, which in reality displays the modern celebrity scientist’s arrogant dismissal of anyone whose ideas they feel are unworthy, but in the movie is treated as little more than a cute quirk.

“I have a slight problem with the celestial dictatorship premise,” Hawking says charmingly while conversing with Jane. In real life, the proper response to this would be, “Well, so does the Church.That’s why she’s never taught any such notion of God in the history of ever, which you would know if you actually took the time to study the topic instead of blithely dismissing it.” In the film, though, the comment simply gets a giggle and a roll of the eyes from Jane.The movie is as unwilling to confront the superficiality of Hawking’s atheism as it is to delve into the complexities of his scientific theories.

The relationship between the Hawkings is also spruced up a bit as well. It doesn’t take too much time on Google to learn that the breakup of their marriage was hardly the congenial affair depicted in the film. This isn’t a grievous an omission, though, as the alteration serves the movie’s determination to tell a story about the transcendence of love and respect in the face of overwhelming struggles. Which it accomplishes, more or less.

So, if you’re just interested in Hawking’s scientific theories and are looking for an exposition about gravity and worm holes and the like, you’d be better off skipping “The Theory of Everything” and going to see “Interstellar” instead. But if you’re in the mood for a beautifully acted gentle story about two people, one of whom just happens to be the world’s most famous physicist, in an unusual situation struggling to make a relationship work, “The Theory of Everything” might just work for you.

“There Is No Heaven” – The Faith of Stephen Hawking

I am taking a slight detour from my series on the message of Jesus because of a fortuitous (providential?) coincidence. Yesterday, I asked: “Is the kingdom of God the same thing as heaven?” The answer, according to Jesus in the New Testament Gospels, is “No.”  Heaven is encompassed within God’s reign, but the kingdom of God has as much to do with earth as with what we call heaven.

Today, heaven is in the news. Or, perhaps it would be more accurate to say that the absence of heaven is in the news.

In a recent interview with the Guardian, British scientist Stephen Hawking proclaimed what his fellow Brit, John Lennon, once encouraged us to imagine. Hawking confidently stated that there is no heaven.

“I have lived with the prospect of an early death for the last 49 years. I’m not afraid of death, but I’m in no hurry to die. I have so much I want to do first,” he said.

“I regard the brain as a computer which will stop working when its components fail. There is no heaven or afterlife for broken down computers; that is a fairy story for people afraid of the dark,” he added.

I have to admire Stephen Hawking’s courage, both in life and in his pending death. And I am certainly in awe of his intellect. But what I find curious is his faith. Yes, that’s right, his faith. Stephen Hawking has faith every bit as much as I do. Let me explain what I mean.

Hawking is a scientist, one who operates in the realm of the material and the testable. Now, much of his scientific theorizing goes far, far beyond what can be seen in a microscope or telescope. Testing in the disciplines of theoretical physics, astronomy, and cosmology is not something one can do in a home laboratory. Nevertheless, at least in principal, Hawking’s theories about nature can be tested within the complex theoretical framework in which he operates.

Yet there are many things Hawking cannot know as a scientist because they are untestable. For example, he can’t know as a scientist whether there is an afterlife or not. He cannot know as a scientist if there’s a heaven, and, if so, what it’s like. To put the matter differently, Hawking cannot know as a scientist that there is no heaven. The existence of heaven is beyond the scope of scientific knowledge, even for a man as brilliant as Stephen Hawking.

So, when Hawking affirms confidently that there is no heaven, he is not speaking as a scientist, but as a person of faith. He is expressing his belief that is not based on scientific evidence. Now, he has every right to do this. And he has every right to be taken seriously as a brilliant man with a courageous spirit. But we make a big mistake if we think that Hawking’s conclusions about heaven are a matter of science. They’re not. They can’t be.

“Oh,” you might object, “there is no real knowledge beyond science. The only things that can be known are those things that are determined by science.” The strange thing is that this very statement is itself unscientific. Science cannot prove that science alone is a reliable source of knowledge. So the one who makes this argument has already disproved the argument.

A defender of Hawking might respond by saying that I cannot know that there is a heaven. I would agree, if we’re talking about scientific knowledge. Heaven also cannot be known by means of history or sociology. But if there are other kinds of knowledge, if there is knowledge that transcends the empirical, then heaven might be knowable in that way.

“Ah,” my interlocutor might assert, “but now you’re in the realm of faith!” Yes, perhaps I am, just as Stephen Hawking is when he talks about heaven. But there is a kind of knowledge that interacts with, critiques, clarifies, and strengthens faith.

As you might expect, I believe Hawking is wrong about heaven. And, yes, I hope he’s wrong. But my zeal for heaven does not have to do with my fear of the dark, as he says. In fact, it has everything to do with another of Hawking’s faith commitments. I’ll weigh in on this tomorrow as I talk about what Hawking’s view of heaven misses.

I saw this movie the other day and I enjoyed it very much. I have posted many things in the past that refer to Stephen Hawking and his works. My favorite review had this quote below in it.

Much can be said about the brilliance of Stephen Hawking’s mind and how he has survived so many years with MND. Spiritually speaking, could it be that God is giving Stephen time? Time to come to know Him and that, beyond all Stephen’s theories, God is profoundly the Great I Am.

I wish Stephen Hawking to take time to read the work of Dr. Henry F. Schaefer. He speaks of Jane and Stephen in his work.

J John believes physicist Stephen Hawking’s latest statement that God did not create the universe is not as radical as it seems.

In a slow week for news the theoretical physicist and cosmologist Stephen Hawking has made headlines by stating in his latest book that he now sees no necessity for God in the creation of the universe. (He also said that ‘philosophy is dead’ which suggests that when it comes to promoting books even the best scientists recognise the commercial value of a controversial statement.) His view raises issues for Christians; so let me respond to them.

First, Hawking’s apparent change in belief is not as radical as it seems. The way the story is being portrayed is that Hawking the believer has now, as a result of his research, become an atheist. But was he ever really a believer?

His association with the idea of God came about when, in his best-selling book, A Brief History of Time, he concluded by mentioning the possibility of a theory of the universe that would allow discussion of the great question of its origin.

In a final sentence he wrote, ‘If we find the answer to that, it would be the ultimate triumph of human reason – for then we should know the mind of God.’ It was a great line to end with and his editor must have loved it; Hawking himself has said that, ‘In the proof stage I nearly cut the last sentence … had I done so, the sales might have been halved.’

Now many people read that final sentence or heard it quoted and felt that Hawking was supporting religious faith. Indeed, in the twenty odd years since it was written it has sometimes been quoted as a defence of religious belief.

Yet when you read more about Hawking’s thought it is clear that the ‘God’ he mentioned in that throwaway comment was little more than a philosophical concept. His god was an academic answer to a cosmological puzzle and no more. So his denial of God in his most recent book is hardly a backtracking from a living faith but rather a shifting of position on what is a purely intellectual debate.

Second, it is very clear that even if Hawking ever really seriously believed in a Creator, such a figure bore very little resemblance to the God of the Bible. A God who does no more than ‘light the blue touch paper of the universe’ and then disappears is not the God of Scripture.

The Bible’s God is a being who doesn’t just create the cosmos but is intimately involved in every aspect of it and continues to sustain it. The God of the Bible did not create once but continues to create things every second. He is involved in the world at this moment; see for example Job 38, Psalm 104:10-30 and Matthew 6:26; 10:29. The Christian God is a God who was not just the Ultimate Physicist at the dawn of creation but someone who through Jesus Christ can be our heavenly Father.

Third, we need to listen to such pronouncements on the origin of the cosmos with some caution. Hawking is a very brave man in his confident belief that the origin of the universe does not need God.

He is saying that he understands how, 13 or so billion years ago, this unimaginably vast and complex universe came into being. Given that serious cosmological research is barely 300 years old and has been conducted from only one small planet in a tiny corner of just one galaxy, perhaps a greater degree of humility would be appropriate.

The mind of man is extraordinarily clever – and Professor Hawking’s is especially so – but it is wise to know our limits and to recognise that there are some things about which we may not have all the data and even some that may be utterly beyond our comprehension.

I am not at all surprised that Stephen Hawking did not find any proof for God in the incredibly complex mathematics of the Big Bang. Let us suppose for a moment that he had – that he had detected unmistakable evidence of God’s handiwork in the early history of the cosmos.

On the one hand, it would be gratifying for the believer. Yet wouldn’t it suggest that God was some sort of academic snob who only really wanted to reveal himself to those who were extraordinarily intelligent? What would such a revelation say to those of us who struggle to add up our shopping bills? Or to those who can’t either read or write? No, I think I prefer the God of the Bible, who makes himself accessible through Jesus Christ to all who seek him.

Finally, it is worth making the point that an enormous problem still remains for Stephen Hawking and his followers. One of the most fundamental of all questions is ‘Where did the universe come from?’ The Christian answer is to simply state that God made it out of nothing.

Hawking’s answer to such a question is to say that nothing made the universe: that this greatest possible something came, of its own accord, out of absolutely nothing. Both views require faith but I know which of the two I find it easier to believe in!

I saw this movie the other day and I enjoyed it very much. I have posted many things in the past that refer to Stephen Hawking and his works. My favorite review had this quote below in it.

Much can be said about the brilliance of Stephen Hawking’s mind and how he has survived so many years with MND. Spiritually speaking, could it be that God is giving Stephen time? Time to come to know Him and that, beyond all Stephen’s theories, God is profoundly the Great I Am.

I wish Stephen Hawking to take time to read the work of Dr. Henry F. Schaefer. He speaks of Jane and Stephen in his work.

The world’s most famous scientist: 10 things you need to know about Stephen Hawking

1) Born in Oxford on January 8 1942 – 300 years after the death of astronomer Galileo Galilei – Professor Hawking grew up in St Albans, Hertfordshire. After being diagnosed with a rare form of motor neurone disease – amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) – at the age of 22, Hawking was given just a few years to live.

2) Hawking is as much a celebrity as he is a scientist, having appeared on The Simpsons, Star Trek and having provided narration for a British Telecom commercial that was later sampled on a Pink Floyd album.

3) He had a difficult time at the local public school and was persecuted as a “swot” who was more interested in jazz, classical music and debating than sport and pop. Although not top of the class, he was good at maths and “chaotically enthusiastic in chemistry”. Hawking has said of his workload as an undergraduate at Oxford “amounted to an average of just an hour a day”. He also said: “I’m not proud of this lack of work, I’m just describing my attitude at the time, which I shared with most of my fellow students. You were supposed to be brilliant without effort, or to accept your limitations and get a fourth class degree.”Despite his workload confession, Hawking got a first and went to Cambridge to begin work on his PhD – but he was already beginning to experience the first symptoms of his illness, having fallen over twice for no reason during the last year of his undergraduate degree.

4) Hawking has credited his marriage in 1965 to Jane Wilde, a language student, as a turning point in his life at a time when he was unsure as to what the point of a degree was if he was to die soon. They went on to have three children – Robert, Lucy, and Timothy.

5) At a meeting of the Royal Society meeting, Hawking interrupted a lecture by renowned astrophysicist Sir Fred Hoyle to let him know that he had made a mistake. When asked how he knew there had been an error, Hawking replied: “Because I’ve worked them out in my head.”

6) During the 1970s Hawking produced a stream of first class research, including probably his most important contribution to cosmology: the discovery of Hawking radiation, which allows a black hole to leak energy and gradually fade away to nothing.

7) In the 1980s, Professor Hawking and Professor Jim Hartle proposed a model of the universe which had no boundaries in space or time. The concept was described in A Brief History Of Time, which sold 25 million copies worldwide.

8) In February 1990 he left his wife of twenty five years to set up home with one of his nurses, Elaine Mason. The couple married in September 1995 but divorced in 2006.

9) Among some of his more unconventional theories, Professor Hawking has predicted the end of humanity – due to global warming, a new killer virus, or the impact of a large comet.

10) In 2009 he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian award in the United States. Hawking was the Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge for 30 years, taking up the post in 1979 and retiring on 1 October 2009. He is also a Fellow of Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge having held many other academic positions. In recent years, Professor Hawking has examined the relationship between science and religion, writing a 2010 book Grand Design, which argues that evoking God is not necessary to explain the origins of the universe.
