Kellye Cash-Sheppard from Memphis, Tennessee, was Miss Tennessee 1986 and was crowned Miss America 1987, capturing preliminary honors in both the talent and swimsuit competitions.[2]
She has performed with numerous musical artists including Vince Gill, Lee Greenwood, and Billy Joel, and appeared in many regional theatrical productions around the country. Cash was chosen for the lead part of country music legend Patsy Cline, in Always…Patsy Cline and has performed the musical on numerous occasions.[4]
Cash is the great-niece of Johnny Cash. She currently resides in Milan, Tennessee, a small town approximately 75 miles northeast of Memphis, with her husband, Todd Sheppard, a teacher and coach in the Milan public schools, and three children; son, Brady; and daughters Cassidy and Tatum.[10]
In addition to making approximately 100 appearances each year at charitable, community and political events, Cash has released six music CDs: four Christian and two country, including Living by the Word, and Real Life.[12] She is very involved in her local church by directing teaching a college and career class with her husband and also singing and playing for the church.

A half-century ago, in 1955, Professor Antony Flew set the agenda for modern atheism with his Theology and Falsification, a paper presented in a debate with C.S. Lewis. This work became the most widely reprinted philosophical publication of the last 50 years. Over the decades, he published more than 30 books attacking belief in God and debated a wide range of religious believers.
Then, in a 2004 Summit at New York University, Professor Flew announced that the discoveries of modern science have led him to the conclusion that the universe is indeed the creation of infinite Intelligence.

Lee Strobel interviews philosopher and scholar Antony Flew on his conversion from atheism to deism. Much of it has to do with intelligent design. Flew was considered one of the most influential and important thinker for atheism during his time before his death (he’s a much better thinker than Richard Dawkins too – even when he was an atheist). His conversion to God-belief has caused an uproar among atheists. They have done all they can to lessen the impact of his famous conversion by shamelessly suggesting he’s too old, senile and mentally deranged to understand logic and science anymore.
Nearly 30 years ago, a debate of significant proportions took place. It was September 20-23, 1976. The place was the campus of North Texas State University in Denton, Texas. The disputants were two longtime professors of philosophy—Thomas B. Warren (whose Ph.D. in philosophy was from Vanderbilt) and Antony G.N. Flew (who was teaching in the University of Reading near London, England). The propositions they debated juxtaposed succinctly the real issue between thorough-going (positive) atheism and thorough-going (biblical) theism. Dr. Flew affirmed, “I know that God does not exist,” and Dr. Warren affirmed, “I know that God does exist.”
Dr. Warren once explained why he selected Antony Flew as his opponent in the debate. His rationale was simple: if those who are on the cutting edge of philosophical thought and who are considered to be the leaders in their chosen area of expertise—the “best of the best” if you will—are unable to defend their position when confronted by a fair and accurate defense of the truth, their error will be exposed. Those who were influenced by these leading men would be forced (like the “domino effect”) to recognize the sterility of the viewpoint they had embraced. Antony Flew had been a leading champion of atheism for decades. His writings dominated philosophical journals, and he was a prolific author [his books included Hume’s Philosophy of Belief (1961), God and Philosophy (1966), Evolutionary Ethics (1967), An Introduction to Western Philosophy (1971), and even a book on logic—Thinking Straight (1975)]. Having taught at Oxford, Aberdeen, Keele, and Reading universities in Britain, Flew also served as a visiting professor in many American universities, and conducted numerous debates in the process of defending his atheism.
For the first two nights of the Warren-Flew debate, Flew assumed the affirmative position in an attempt to prove that God does not exist. However, Warren’s kind-but-relentless assault in the negative position seemed to leave Flew battered, bewildered, and disoriented—so much so that when Dr. Warren assumed the affirmative position on the third night of the debate, he spent a few minutes attempting to ascertain the reason for Dr. Flew’s failure, while in the affirmative, to present a sound argument for his atheistic contention in a precise logical way:
It has been suggested that his failure is due to the fact that he is in a foreign country, but such could have little or nothing to do with this proposition. That he is out of his own country has nothing to do with how he handles intellectual material. Neither is his failure due to his not being accustomed to this style of debating. I have heard him in discussion before, and he seemed not to be bothered at all by the kind of format that was involved. Perhaps he did not know the responsibility of an affirmative speaker? But that cannot be so because, in his writings, he constantly chides a man who does not recognize his responsibility as an affirmant. Perhaps because he does not know the arguments? I deny that emphatically. In reading the works of Dr. Flew, I am convinced that he knows the arguments that are involved as well as anybody in the world. Perhaps because he does not understand or accept the law of rationality? The truth of the matter is: he has written very strongly and frequently in defense of it! But he has not acted in harmony with it in this discussion. Ordinarily, when he is writing in the affirmative, and he writes almost constantly of matters that are concerned with God or very closely related to God—at least subjects that are peripheral to the subject of God. In fact, it is the case that he is almost God-intoxicated. He constantly emphasizes in his books that the onus of proof is on the affirmative writer or speaker! But I am afraid that he has not recognized that truth in this discussion (1977, pp. 131-132, emp. in orig.).
In the very next speech—the first negative—Dr. Flew responded to Dr. Warren’s comments in the following words: “Dr. Warren may be assured that I am sobering up from God intoxication. I shall be writing considerably less, if anything, in this area in the future” (p. 143, emp. added). Now, 28 years later, Dr. Flew appears, indeed, to finally have sobered up. At the age of 81, he has announced to the world that, based upon the scientific evidence, he now believes in some type of God (“Famous Atheist…,” 2004). However, do not jump to any premature conclusions. One interviewer spoke with Dr. Flew about his recent adjustments in his thinking, and concluded:
The fact of the matter is: Flew hasn’t really decided what to believe. He affirms that he is not a Christian—he is still quite certain that the Gods of Christianity or Islam do not exist, that there is no revealed religion, and definitely no afterlife of any kind. But he is increasingly persuaded that some sort of Deity brought about this universe, though it does not intervene in human affairs, nor does it provide any postmortem salvation. He says he has in mind something like the God of Aristotle, a distant, impersonal “prime mover.” It might not even be conscious, but a mere force. In formal terms, he regards the existence of this minimal God as a hypothesis that, at present, is perhaps the best explanation for why a universe exists that can produce complex life. But he is still unsure. In fact, he asked that I not directly quote him yet, until he finally composes his new introduction to a final edition of his book God and Philosophy, due out next year. He hasn’t completed it yet, precisely because he is still examining the evidence and thinking things over. Anything he says now, could change tomorrow (Carrier, 2004).
Here is what Flew has stated about whether he believes in God in the biblical sense:
I do not think I will ever make that assertion, precisely because any assertion which I am prepared to make about God would not be about a God in that sense … I think we need here a fundamental distinction between the God of Aristotle or Spinoza and the Gods of the Christian and the Islamic Revelations…. My one and only piece of relevant evidence [for an Aristotelian God] is the apparent impossibility of providing a naturalistic theory of the origin from DNA of the first reproducing species… [In fact] the only reason which I have for beginning to think of believing in a First Cause god is the impossibility of providing a naturalistic account of the origin of the first reproducing organisms (as quoted in Carrier, italics in orig., emp. added).
It’s a step. But Dr. Flew has a long way to go to arrive at the truth concerning God’s existence. Observe that even when an atheist is forced to recognize that the evidence demands that a purposive, intelligent Being lies behind the Creation, he still endeavors to relegate this intelligence to an impersonal force that does not “provide a postmortem salvation.” Why? Because the same Being also would provide a “postmortem condemnation” in which humans will rightly and justly receive punishment for their sinful behavior on Earth. Can’t have that, can we?! It would mean adjusting one’s daily life choices and relegating one’s stubborn pride beneath the will of God.
Flew also stated: “My whole life has been guided by the principle of Plato’s Socrates: Follow the evidence, wherever it leads” (“Famous Atheist…,” emp. added). If that were true, he would have already been led to the truth that the God of the Bible exists (just read the Warren-Flew debate!). Indeed, all the available evidence leads to that singular conclusion. The very evidence that Flew now believes indicates the existence of some sort of God, is the same evidence that he once insisted supported atheism! It took him 66 years to arrive at this most recent conclusion (Flew has been a self-avowed atheist since he was 15). But given the current human lifespan, he does not have another 66 years to follow the evidence to where it leads.

I am going against the tide and picking Florida to lose to Dayton and Tennessee and Louisville to make final four!!!! And then there were 12 left. Florida won yesterday and so did Dayton in their sweet sixteen games in Memphis. Everybody on the talk radio show in Little Rock was saying that Dayton is toast but what I saw on the court leads me to believe that they can take the Gators down. I was impressed with Dayton last night and I was also impressed with Tennessee and their big men. Again on 103.7 the buzz today in Little Rock Tommy Smith and his friends totally dismissed the Vols’ chances of advancing, but their last performance was very impressive.
Kentucky seems to have caught the attention of the public and everyone thinks the cats are back. I beg to differ on that. Louisville is the team that is playing very well together now and I think Calipari will head back to Kentucky with a lot of big blue fans very disappointed in the way the “one and done” experiment is working out.
The wonderful thing about the NCAA playoffs is how unpredictable they are. It is true that 3 of the 4 number 1 seeds may make it to the Final Four and that will be most since 2008 when UCLA, Memphis, Kansas and North Carolina (all number 1 seeds) made it, but I am thinking that maybe only one of them will make it and Wisconsin will knock off Arizona!!!!

Opps the cards and vols will have to meet and only one of them will go to Final Four and I guess that it will be decided by the last shot. The last time the Vols were in the Final 8 the Mich St Spartans hit the last shot to advance. Will history repeat itself? That is why they play the game!!!
Panned for early season losses and relatively weak non-conference schedules, the league has three teams still playing in the NCAA tournament. Florida, Kentucky and Tennessee – the only SEC squads to make the 68-team field – all advanced to the Sweet 16 over the weekend, giving the SEC a perfect 7-0 mark in college basketball’s premier event.
”I’m sure some people are pretty surprised at three SEC teams, because all I heard all year was that the SEC was in a down year and it was a weak SEC,” Florida guard Scottie Wilbekin said Monday. ”It’s pretty cool to see three SEC teams in the Sweet 16.”
The Gators (34-2), the tournament’s overall top seed, will play fourth-seeded UCLA in the South Region on Thursday night in Memphis, Tenn. No. 8 seed Kentucky (26-10), which handed Wichita State its only loss of the season Sunday, advanced to face fourth-seeded Louisville on Friday night in the Midwest Region. No. 11 Tennessee (24-12), which already has three tournament wins since opening play in the First Four, will join the Wildcats in Indianapolis and play Michigan.
Only two other conferences – the Pac-12 and the Big Ten – landed three teams in the round of 16. Both of those leagues were ranked in the top three in conference RPI.
The SEC, meanwhile, ranked seventh, just ahead of the American Athletic Conference.

Florida coach Billy Donovan blamed early season struggles for the widespread perception that the league was down.
”It’s very, very unfair to pin a league based on what happens in November and December,” Donovan said Monday. ”In a lot of ways, maybe some of the losses that our league took in November and December prepared them to be better in our league. I think our league can play with any league in the country.
”But I would say this: Just because certain league teams get knocked out early doesn’t mean the league is overrated. And because a league really, really advances in the tournament doesn’t mean the league is great. I just get upset when all of a sudden everybody just throws out and makes assumptions or draws conclusions of a league being good or bad based on what’s happened in the non-conference. That to me is, I think, somewhat unfair.”
There were plenty of eye-opening losses early.
Texas-El Paso upset Tennessee. Drexel beat Alabama. Northwestern State defeated Auburn. Davidson surprised Georgia. Massachusetts and Rhode Island topped LSU. Utah State knocked off Mississippi State. Missouri State stunned Texas A&M. And USC Upstate shocked South Carolina.

There also were setbacks in more high-profile matchups: Michigan State and Baylor beat Kentucky. Connecticut and Wisconsin defeated Florida. Texas, Providence, Butler and Saint Louis knocked off Vanderbilt.
So the SEC was down before its teams even started beating each other up.
It surely didn’t help the league’s image when Florida, which isn’t close to being Donovan’s most talented team, swept the regular season and the tournament. The Gators finished 18-0 in the regular season, becoming the first from a major conference to accomplish the feat since Indiana in 1976, and then beat Kentucky for the third time to win the tournament.
”When you have a stage and a platform and you’re on television, you’re allowed to say what you want to say,” Vols coach Cuonzo Martin said. ”I think sometimes perception becomes a reality. It’s a very tough league, a very talented league. You’ve got the No. 1 team in all of college basketball in the SEC. You have the winningest college program in the SEC, in Kentucky.
”I don’t think the criticism is accurate. But the teams that are in the tournament, they won it because they’re good teams.”
It might not just be the teams in the tournament, either.
Entering Monday games, the SEC was 12-2 in postseason play thanks in part to wins by Georgia, Missouri, LSU and Arkansas in the NIT and Texas A&M in the College Basketball Invitational.
Of course, those victories hardly compare to what Florida, Kentucky and Tennessee have done.
”If everybody in the SEC was out of the tournament, they’d say, ‘See, I told you the league is no good,”’ Donovan said. ”Now we’ve got some teams advancing, ‘Wow, the league must be really, really underrated.’ Sometimes it has to do with matchups, sometimes it has to do with who you’re playing against. Sometimes it has to do with how well you’re playing. There’s a lot of variables that go into winning in postseason.”

RESPONSE: In one sense, this statement is true. Modern science has been learning more and more about our world over the last several hundred years. However, in another sense, this statement is false. In some areas, the “gaps” in our scientific knowledge have not been closing but openingover the last fifty years.
Here, we need to distinguish between scientific experimentation and scientific explanation. While scientific experimentation has grown in all areas of science, scientific explanations have shrunk in certain areas. For instance, the origin of the universe, the fine-tuning of the universe, and the origin of first life are just as inexplicable now, as they were when they were first studied. Just consider the origin of first life. In his book The Fifth Miracle, agnostic Paul Davies writes,
When I set out to write this book, I was convinced that science was close to wrapping up the mystery of life’s origin… Having spent a year or two researching the field, I am now of the opinion that there remains a huge gulf in our understanding… This gulf in understanding is not merely ignorance about certain technical details; it is a major conceptual lacuna.[1]
In his book The Way of the Cell, agnostic Franklin Harold writes,
Of all the unsolved mysteries remaining in science, the most consequential may be the origin of life… The origin of life is also a stubborn problem, with no solution in sight.[2]
Naturalistic scientists are just as far from explaining the origin of first life, as they have ever been. In fact, the more we learn about these “gaps,” the less we are able to explain them –apart from an intelligent cause. Moreover, if science is truly explaining away the supernatural, then why have devout atheists like Antony Flew come to faith in God due to these recent scientific discoveries? In his book There is a God, Flew writes,
The only satisfactory explanation for the origin of such ‘end-directed, self-replicating’ life as we see on earth is an infinitely intelligent Mind.[3]
I must say again that the journey to my discovery of the Divine has thus far been a pilgrimage of reason. I have followed the argumentwhere it has led me. And it has led me to accept the existence of a self-existent, immutable, immaterial, omnipotent, and omniscient Being.[4]
Flew claimed that his other atheistic colleagues –like Bertrand Russell and J.L. Mackie –would have been “impressed” with this “evidence,”[5]if it had been discovered earlier.

A half-century ago, in 1955, Professor Antony Flew set the agenda for modern atheism with his Theology and Falsification, a paper presented in a debate with C.S. Lewis. This work became the most widely reprinted philosophical publication of the last 50 years. Over the decades, he published more than 30 books attacking belief in God and debated a wide range of religious believers.
Then, in a 2004 Summit at New York University, Professor Flew announced that the discoveries of modern science have led him to the conclusion that the universe is indeed the creation of infinite Intelligence.

ANTONY FLEW’S SIGNIFICANCE IN THE
HISTORY OF ATHEISM by Roy Abraham Varghese
It is not too much to say that within the last hundred years,
no mainstream philosopher has developed the kind of sys-
tematic, comprehensive, original, and influential exposi-
tion of atheism that is to be found in Antony Flew’s fifty
years of antitheological writings. Prior to Flew, the major
apologias for atheism were those of Enlightenment think-
ers like David Hume and the nineteenth-century German
philosophers Arthur Schopenhauer, Ludwig Feuerbach,
and Friedrich Nietzsche.
But what about Bertrand Russell (who maintained
rather implausibly that he was technically an agnostic,
although he was an atheist in practice), Sir Alfred Ayer,
Jean-Paul Sartre, Albert Camus, and Martin Heidegger, all
of whom were twentieth-century atheists well before Flew
began writing? In Russell’s case, it is quite obvious that
he did not produce anything beyond a few polemical pam-
phlets on his skeptical views and his disdain for organized
religion. His Religion and Science and Why I Am Not a
Christian were simply anthologies of articles—he produced
no systematic philosophy of religion. At best, he drew atten-
tion to the problem of evil and sought to refute traditional
arguments for God’s existence without generating any new
arguments of his own. Ayer, Sartre, Camus, and Heidegger
have this in common: their focus was on generating a spe-
cific way of engaging in philosophical discussion, an after-
effect of which was the denial of God. They had their own
systems of thought of which atheism was a by-product. You
had to buy into their systems to buy into their atheism. The
same might be said of later nihilists like Richard Rorty and
Jacques Derrida.
Of course, there were major philosophers of Flew’s gen-
eration who were atheists; W. V. O. Quine and Gilbert Ryle
are obvious instances. But none took the step of developing
book-length arguments to support their personal beliefs.
Why so? In many instances, professional philosophers in
those days were disinclined to dirty their delicate hands
by indulging in such popular, even vulgar, discussions. In
other cases, the motive was prudence.
Certainly, in later years, there were atheist philoso-
phers who critically examined and rejected the traditional
arguments for God’s existence. These range from Paul
Edwards, Wallace Matson, Kai Nielsen, and Paul Kurtz to J.
L. Mackie, Richard Gale, and Michael Martin. But their
works did not change the agenda and framework of discus-
sion the way Flew’s innovative publications did.
Where does the originality of Flew’s atheism lie? In “The-
ology and Falsification,”
God and Philosophy, and The Pre-
sumption of Atheism, he developed novel arguments against
theism that, in some respects, laid out a road map for subse-
quent philosophy of religion. In “Theology and Falsification”
he raised the question of how religious statements can make
meaningful claims (his much-quoted expression “death by a
thousand qualifications” captures this point memorably); in
God and Philosophy he argued that no discussion on God’s
existence can begin until the coherence of the concept of
an omnipresent, omniscient spirit had been established; in
The Presumption of Atheism he contended that the burden
of proof rests with theism and that atheism should be the
default position. Along the way, he of course analyzed the
traditional arguments for God’s existence. But it was his rein-
vention of the frames of reference that changed the whole
nature of the discussion.
In the context of all of the above, Flew’s recent rejec-
tion of atheism was clearly a historic event. But it is little
known that, even in his atheist days, Flew had, in a sense,

After the world’s most influential atheist stunned the atheist community with his book There Is a God, and was accused of being a senescent scholar manipulated by cunning Christians, Antony Flew has come out swinging at Richard Dawkins and his book The God Delusion.
The fault of Dawkins as an academic (which he still was during the period in which he composed this book although he has since announced his intention to retire) was his scandalous and apparently deliberate refusal to present the doctrine which he appears to think he has refuted in its strongest form…and his failure is the crucial index of his insincerity of academic purpose and therefore warrants me in charging him with having become, what he has probably believed to be an impossibility, a secularist bigot.
After criticizing Dawkins for his unacademic approach, Flew turns to the author’s self-serving intentions:
This whole business makes all too clear that Dawkins is not interested in the truth as such but is primarily concerned to discredit an ideological opponent by any available means. That would itself constitute sufficient reason for suspecting that the whole enterprise of The God Delusion was not, as it at least pretended to be, an attempt to discover and spread knowledge of the existence or non-existence of God but rather an attempt,an extremely successful one, to spread the author’s own convictions in this area.
If that’s the result of mental senescence, I’ll look forward to a lump of it when I approach those octogenarian years.

Antony Flew did not make a public profession of faith in Christ but will his conversion from atheism to theism have an impact? Many students even today are studying the classical arguments for and against the existence of God and when they come to the contributions of Antony Flew they will also not that he abandoned his atheism when he was 81 years old. That impact will be great indeed!!!
Abraham Varghese, who had organized philosophical symposia since 1985, at most of which Flew made the case for atheism, describes the significance of his 2004 change of mind thus:

When the famous atheist philosopher Antony Flew became a theist a few years back, the news was met by mixed reactions by Christians. Some haled it as a good thing; others are not so sure or think possibly it’s not good since he didn’t become a Christian. One of these skeptics asked me about my opinion the other night. Why have so many Christians been excited about Flew’s “conversion” since he didn’t become a Christian?
Certainly, mere theism isn’t enough to be reconciled to God through Jesus. However, I still think it is a good think that Flew has made this move. First, I think that it shows the power of good arguments. When a life-long atheist and world-class intellectual can be persuaded, that showsthat Christians have the rational goods. God makes sense and relationship with Him doesn’t require sacrificing one’s intellect, which is a stumbling block for some people who have the opposite impression. Second, theism over atheism is progress because now Flew has a belief and a concept of God that can be shaped and informed to become more accurate and true.
Becoming a Christian is rarely done in one fell swoop of belief and assent. It usually takes time to consider the information and for the Holy Spirit to work. We need to be willing to meet people where they are and take the time necessary to introduce them to the God of salvation.

http://drcraigvideos.blogspot.com – William Lane Craig and Antony Flew met in 1998 on the 50th anniversary of the famous Copleston/Russell debate to discuss the question of God’s existence in a public debate. Unlike Richard Dawkins, Flew was one of the most respected atheist thinkers of the 20th and early 21st century (his scholarly works on David Hume are still studied today, and his “presumption of atheism” argument is still used by atheists). Professor Antony Flew and co-author Abraham Varghese have written a book, There Is a God,describing Flew’s “conversion” from atheism to deism. Although Flew grew up as the son of a preacher, the problem of evil and Flew’s academic studies led him to disbelieve in God’s existence.
Flew’s early writings
Much of the first few chapters of There Is a God examined Flew’s philosophical writings for atheism and against the existence of God. For Flew, at the time, there just wasn’t enough evidence in support of the existence of God. By default, he reasoned, atheism was the logical choice, and it was up to the theists to present the evidence supporting their case for the existence of God. In all Flew’s writings, it is apparent that the existence of evil is still a problem for him, and that he considers this problem as eliminating the possibility of God being personal. Flew still insists that the free will defense argument does not exonerate God from the responsibility for the existence of evil. However, at this point, I think most theists acknowledge that God is ultimately responsible for evil, but that evil is required to fulfill the purpose for the creation of the universe.
Flew’s “conversion”
In Antony Flew’s 2004 “coming out” debut, he admitted that the evidence for design (specifically in DNA) was responsible for his change of mind regarding the existence of a divine Designer:
“Yes, I now think it does… almost entirely because of the DNA investigations. What I think the DNA material has done is that it has shown, by the almost unbelievable complexity of the arrangements which are needed to produce (life), that intelligence must have been involved in getting these extraordinary diverse elements to work together.”
In other discussions, Flew admitted that he had a difficult time believing in any scientific theories that attempted to explain the origin of the first replicator. He also indicated that the Big Bang creation event had been a problem for his atheism “because it suggested that the universe had a beginning and that the first sentence of Genesis (In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth”) was related to an event in the universe.” Flew was uncomfortable with alternatives, saying, “I did not find the multiverse alternative very helpful. The postulation of multiple universes, I maintained, is a truly desperate alternative.”
Controversies
There has been some controversy about the nature of Flew’s “conversion” and role in the writing of There Is a God, especially in light of his advanced age. However, in subsequent interviews, Flew has maintained that the book accurately represents his current thinking on the existence of God. According to a press release from Harper Collins (the publisher):
“My name is on the book and it represents exactly my opinions. I would not have a book issued in my name that I do not 100 percent agree with. I needed someone to do the actual writing because I’m 84 and that was Roy Varghese’s role. The idea that someone manipulated me because I’m old is exactly wrong. I may be old but it is hard to manipulate me. This is my book and it represents my thinking.”
The idea that Antony Flew is not a deist was thoroughly rebutted by himself in his review of Richard Dawkins’s book, The God Delusion.1 In the review, Flew calls Dawkins a “secularist bigot” and chides him for failing to address Einstein’s deism or even properly defining deism anywhere in his book. Such writings do not reflect those of a senile old man.
Conclusion
The book, There Is a God is an interesting examination of how a long-time atheist could change his mind about the existence of God. The book seems to be an honest examination of what Flew has changed his mind about and where he is still convinced that God could not be personally involved in human lives. Will Antony Flew become a Christian? In the book, he indicates that he is still open to Christianity, although there are many issues to resolve before that becomes a possibility. The book is quite readable without being overly technical, so it is recommended for all readers of this site.

Flew was considered one of the most influential and important thinker for atheism during his time before his death (he’s a much better thinker than Richard Dawkins too – even when he was an atheist). A half-century ago, in 1955, Professor Antony Flew set the agenda for modern atheism with his Theology and Falsification, a paper presented in a debate with C.S. Lewis. This work became the most widely reprinted philosophical publication of the last 50 years. Over the decades, he published more than 30 books attacking belief in God and debated a wide range of religious believers.
Then, in a 2004 Summit at New York University, Professor Flew announced that the discoveries of modern science have led him to the conclusion that the universe is indeed the creation of infinite Intelligence.

Usually I would send them a cassette tape of Adrian Rogers’ messages “6 reasons I know the Bible is True,” “The Final Judgement,” “Who is Jesus?” and the message by Bill Elliff, “How to get a pure heart.” I would also send them printed material from the works of Francis Schaeffer and a personal apologetic letter from me addressing some of the issues in their work.
The famous atheist Antony Flew was actually took the time to listen to several of these messages and he wrote me back in the mid 1990′s several times.
In 2004 the atheist world was rocked by the news of one of the most important defections from its ranks in recent times. The world’s leading atheist, Antony Flew, announced that he was no longer an atheist, but a theist. This of course sent shock waves through the anti-theist camp, since they had long been claiming that rational and reasonable people only choose unbelief, whereas believers can only be regarded as stupid, gullible and deluded. It is pretty hard to describe Antony Flew in those terms.
Indeed, given his credentials, this is an amazing book about an amazing intellectual about-face. For over 50 years Flew was the number one proponent of atheism. And as a world class scholar with over 30 books on philosophy in print, he was one of the twentieth century’s most imposing intellectual figures.
In this book we hear about the reasons why he has abandoned atheism and embraced its counterpart. The significance of this turnaround can be seen in part by the ugly attacks and bitter responses by fellow atheists. They have made it perfectly clear that Flew has committed the unpardonable sin here. Their crude and ugly attacks on him and his decision is a telling commentary on the intellectual shallowness, bigoted fundamentalism, and narrow-minded intolerance that characterises so much of the new atheism.
The first half of this book is a brief intellectual biography of Flew. Here we learn about how he was raised in a Christian home; his decision to embrace atheism at age 15; his career as a professional philosopher; his numerous important works on philosophy; his time as a Marxist; his encounters with such intellectual heavyweights as C.S. Lewis, A.J. Ayer, Gilbert Ryle, Wittgenstein, and others; his debates with Christian theists such as Lewis, Alvin Plantinga, Richard Swinburne, William Lane Craig; his debates with fellow atheists such as Richard Dawkins; and his six decades as a dogmatic atheist.
The second half of the book deals with why he finally felt compelled to abandon his atheism and embrace theism. He offers three main reasons for his defection, (or apostasy, as many fellow atheists regard his move). The first bit of evidence he cites is the fact that nature obeys rational and ordered laws. The second is the fact that we are intelligently organised and purpose-driven beings. The third is the very existence of nature itself. The brute evidence of nature, in other words, has led Flew to recognise that “the universe was brought into existence by an infinite Intelligence”.
He expands these three points in some detail, and demonstrates how any open-minded examination of recent scientific discoveries can only point in one direction: that matter alone is not all there is, and a supreme intelligence must be directing what we observe in nature.

All the reasons offered in this book are based on an honest assessment of the evidence. Flew had made it a life habit to follow the command of Plato attributed to Socrates, “We must follow the argument wherever it leads”.
Flew rightly complains that so many atheists are simply stuck in a narrow box, where prior faith commitments to naturalism preclude an honest evaluation of the evidence. It is so easy “to let preconceived theories shape the way we view evidence,” he says, “instead of letting the evidence shape our theories”. Flew’s willingness as an honest atheist to follow the evidence where it leads finally led him out of the barren sands of atheism into the refreshing oasis of theism.
He notes that many leading scientists today “have built a philosophically compelling vision of a rational universe that sprang from a divine mind”. Eminent scientists and scientific thinkers such as Max Planck, Erwin Schrodinger, Werner Heisenberg, Paul Davies, Francis Collins, John Polkinghorne, Roger Penrose and Stephen Hawking all acknowledge that there must be more to reality than what is offered in the materialist worldview.
The various new discoveries – be they in astronomy, physics, cosmology, genetics or molecular biology – all demonstrate intelligence, purpose, order, design and complexity, the most obvious explanation of which is an intelligent designer.
Flew of course takes on all the various challenges to such thinking, be it the multiverse scenarios, the functionalism of Dennett, Stenger’s notion of symmetry, or Dawkins’ idea of selfish genes. Concerning the last of these, Flew had long been a critique of this idea. “Genes, of course, can be neither selfish nor unselfish,” he says, “any more than they or any other non-conscious entities can engage in competition or make selections”. Indeed, natural selection “does not positively produce anything. It only eliminates, or tends to eliminate, whatever is not competitive”.
Even though this is a brief book of just 200 pages, the cumulative case for the inadequacies of atheism and the necessity of theism is here very nicely and compellingly made. And given the one making the case – the world’s leading atheist for six decades – this book needs to be seriously read by everyone.
Flew makes it clear that he is not a Christian – at least as yet – but is basically a deist. Deism says that there is a creator God, but such a God has no ongoing relationship with the created order – a bit like an absentee landlord. He says his journey to theism was based on reason alone, not faith, and he has yet to decide about revealed religion.
He does inform us however that if he were to embrace a revelational religion, Christianity would be the best choice. Indeed, he finds the arguments for Christianity persuasive, and is now exploring the evidence for this as well. He is even impressed with the central truth claim of Christianity, the resurrection of Jesus. In fact, he allows New Testament scholar N.T. Wright to have a concluding chapter in this book, making the case for the resurrection.
So as an honest seeker, he is more than willing to consider the claims of Christ. But for the honest atheist, this book offers a persuasive case for the claims of theism. As Roy Abraham Varghese argues in another appendix to this book, “we have all the evidence we need in our immediate experience” for theism, and the only reason why people remain in atheism is a refusal to look at this evidence.
In this hugely important book Antony Flew challenges all of us – atheists especially – to honestly and sincerely examine the evidence, without preconceived biases and agendas. Genuine intellectual honesty demands that we indeed follow the evidence wherever it may lead.

Driving down a 2 lane road in rural New Mexico, Ran yells from the back, “Hey Svendo, you mind turning down the music?” I’ve done a lot of interviews, but never from the 4th seat of a giant touring van affectionately known as Blanch. Just days before, she had caught fire driving somewhere along the east coast. “I woke up to black smoke and the boys shouting,” says Ran. “I had come out of a dizzying dream, so I figured we were suspended on the rail of a bridge or had just plummeted down a mountainside or something to that effect. All I could think about was that my AAA had just expired.” It turned out it was just an electrical fire, and luckily the local fire chief hadn’t been asleep too long and was surprisingly quick to respond. A couple days stranded for repairs, and the band was back on the road. – “Svend, can you turn this song up?” and turning back to me, “Sorry, is that too loud?”
The Daylights are a commanding three-piece emerging from Los Angeles, CA. The close-knit group consists of brothers Ran (guitars/vocals/keys) and Ricky Jackson (bass/vocals) and drummer Svend Lerche. Known for their giant melodies and cinematic sound, the band released their highly-anticipated self-titled debut album in September of 2010 recorded in London with super-producer Youth (Paul McCartney, U2) and an all-star cast of engineers and mixers. As an indie band, The Daylights’ opportunities have been nothing short of extraordinary, securing coveted spots on sold-out tours with Katy Perry, OneRepublic, NeedtoBreathe and made huge viral impact with the song and video for “I Hope This Gets To You”.
The album is a rising triumph, and does much to expand the band’s sonic and lyrical identity. At times it’s unapologetically bold and stadium-sized, as in the fuzz bass-driven opening track “Black Dove”, other moments brooding and vulnerable, most featured in the mic-in-a-room confessional “Quick Fix”. “We wanted to make a record that you could put on in your car, drive an hour, and feel like you got a lot more than just 60 miles down the road,” explains Ricky.
Lyrically the band is getting comfortable in their skin. “Don’t cry with your cinema eyes, you’re fine china on a string, you’re my zeros and ones and everything in between,” sings Ran in the raucous “Digital_Kiss”, perhaps the most unrestrained few minutes we’ve heard from the band thus far. And while there’s an obvious, intentional polarity occurring within the record, every song is unmistakable Daylights. The first single “Rogue Machine” features lush backwards synths and a gorgeous string top line, as Ricky pines, “Don’t say that you want me, say that you need me, let yourself go…don’t try pretending there is no feeling left in your bones.” There’s a confidence in the writing that has come to bear without boiling over.
One of Los Angeles’ premiere indie bands, The Daylights had the privilege of working alongside a critically-acclaimed heavyweight. “I don’t know where we got the audacity, but we called our favorite producer Youth and his camp to find out if he would be up for working on the album,” says Ran. “We didn’t have major label backing, but he was very kind and was a fan of what we were doing as a band, and a few months later, we managed to get ourselves and some gear over to London.” The band describes the time in the studio as a very intense and liberating three or four weeks. “I, for one, can probably get a little too analytical during the creation process, and Youth’s entire mantra was about feeling and reacting; not allowing the time or opportunity to mull things over too much. We all tracked in the same room, and by the end we were starting and finishing a song a day. I remember we couldn’t fall into Youth’s pace at first; but it was amazing how we managed to catch up and change our mindsets and work flow. We’d stop pretty frequently for tea and toast- you can’t take that away from the Brits- but Digital (Kiss) was tracked and finished in 3 hours, I think.” Fortunately and unfortunately, when they left London with the record all but done, the band signed onto a six-month tour with Katy Perry–a strange but beneficial pairing–and the record had to wait for mixing.
The album is admittedly longer than most debuts, at 15 full tracks (w a few experimental bookends). “We’ve always thought of ourselves as songwriters first,” says Ricky, “but there were moments when we were tracking and it was feeling good and I was like, ‘man, let’s just make this one an instrumental.’ It’s great playing with guys that still surprise you musically, even after playing together a while, like they haven’t shown all their cards yet or something.”
It’s an interesting dynamic, the three guys, and even though Svend is from Denmark and unrelated (though he could certainly pass as the third brother), he seems to dial right into the sometimes arcane nature of communication. “It makes sense, me growing up in Denmark listening to American music and the guys growing up listening to stuff from my hometown. I think it’s why we play well together…there’s this good push and pull going on. I feel like we ended up making a very honest record, with how we were all feeling at the time. That’s by far the most satisfying thing for each of us.”
The band spent much of last year on the road with OneRepublic and Katy Perry, and they’ve just completed a tour with Civil Twilight. In a few weeks time, they’ll begin a 40-date national tour with NeedtoBreathe- highly coveted spots and abnormal opportunities for an indie band. Now, with a record in hand, the coming year looks to be an extremely promising one. Their single “Rogue Machine” has climbed to the top 50 on the Hot AC radio charts without any backing or label support. “We don’t mind being underdogs,” says Ran. “Makes for a much better story.”
