Keith Green’s Message Continues to Encourage a New Generation!

Written by Carl Hamper | 15 Jul 2022

It was July 28, 1982, exactly 35 years ago to date (at the writing of this blog post), when Keith Green and others took off from an airstrip, almost in walking distance from where I am sitting now, and left the earth behind never to return. The airplane accident that took the life of singer-songwriter Keith Green, shook the lives of the evangelical Christian community around the world.

KG Tombstone.jpgIf you are in your 50’s or older, and you were a Christian in those days, you may remember where you were when you heard he had died. You may have sensed it then, and surely it seems true now, that there would never be a Christian evangelist and singer like him again.

His songs were filled with a direction, passion, and challenge that would seem out of place in today’s Christian music. His lyrics, which told of ‘pledging his head to heaven’ for the gospel, pledging his wife to heaven, and then even pledging his children to heaven for the gospel, have no real equal in today’s music. He even had the radical policy of giving away his albums for “whatever you can afford.”

Remember, this was in the days when records were pressed onto vinyl, or on the newer media of cassette tape. Even today in the digital era when Christian music could be given away entirely free, we simply do not see it happening as Keith used to do it at a cost to himself. It was a radical ministry that is still by today’s standards, ahead of its time.

God blessed his ministry to the point of having a huge multi-color web press, sending millions of tracts in dozens of languages around the world. Many of those messages were revolutionary to the Jesus people movement, a revival that crossed cultural boundaries around the world, led by no discernable person or group. These messages would become pillars in the church culture of the day and some are still  fundamental teachings that you receive in any YWAM Discipleship Training School.

They were one of the first ministries that awakened a sleeping church culture to the horrors of abortion, when most church denominations were still naïve to the real problem. Other teachings included the Father heart of God, and the great commission as a calling on every Christian, not just a few believers. Some of us who remember that era, if we are honest, need to admit a sinking feeling we have had over those years. It is this: it seems that when Keith died a whole generation of Christian revival died with him.

The revival of our youth seems to be washed away in the sands of time, and we never would have predicted our present day culture of rampant immorality would have taken its place. Several years ago, when I first was considering working with Youth With a Mission, I found myself in Texas visiting family who had just moved here from Michigan.

I felt the urge to drive an hour out into the countryside, to this little town of Garden Valley all by myself. I passed by the Twin Oaks Ranch YWAM base, and headed to the little cemetery where Keith and two of his children were buried together in one casket. I asked the groundskeeper at the small church where the grave of Keith Green might be. I was surprised that he did not know nor did he recognize the name at all.

This musician, known throughout the Christian world, was now unknown, even by the groundskeeper of the little graveyard where he had been laid to rest. When I found the gravesite I felt a restlessness and a deep sadness. I spent time in prayer, and asked God hard questions that many of my generation tend to have.

I realized it wasn’t Keith Green I was grieving, but the loss of everything he meant to my generation. I was grieving my own loss of a sense of calling, now feeling disqualified through divorce, physical injury, and other trials of life. I was also grieving the fact that many of my closest friends had lost their faith in Christ.Through social media, I had reconnected with some of my most zealous Christian friends from decades past, only to find that they had left God entirely.

In that time of prayer at the gravesite, I began to realize as long as we are still here, the “revival generation” is not gone. If we want to know where those passionate believers went, we need to look in the mirror. We are those same kids, those same zealous dreamers who could not even imagine a life without serving God as our main pursuit. Even though much has happened to us, we are still the same people, and more importantly He is still the same God who called us.

I know as King David said, that our days are numbered in God’s book from the beginning, even before we are born. God called us before we had ever sinned or done right or wrong of any kind. Christ died for us before we sinned our first sin, the solution was given before we knew we had the problem. We are not disqualified by age, or events, good or bad, intended or accidental.

FullSizeRender 6.jpgKeith Green’s last message was a plea for more people to enter the mission field. He confessed he had been clueless as to the great need for missionaries until he visited several  organizations working for God in many nations.

Nobody could have predicted or anticipated his sudden death, just like many of us didn’t predict or anticipate how life would develop for us since those days. Yet, we are still here, and God has called many of us back to His work.

Then the next time somebody asks, “Whatever happened to all those Christians from the 70’s and 80’s Jesus movement?” We can say, “We are right here. God has been preparing us, but now we are ready. We have aged, we may have more bumps and bruises, but we still have the passion we used to have. We were the Christian youth of the 70s, but now, we are the Christian leaders of today, and we are calling a new generation to answer the call to missions!”

Keith Green: 40 years since his untimely death, the music lives on

The American singer-songwriter famous for his outspoken evangelistic style died in a plane crash in 1982. Derek Walker looks back on his life, faith and music ministry

Keithgreen

Keith Green narrowly missed out on joining the infamous 27 Club. Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Kurt Cobain and Amy Winehouse – along with many other talented musical stars – all died aged 27. Green survived an extra year.

Unlike other rock stars, the American songwriter’s death wasn’t the result of drug or alcohol abuse, but a tragic plane crash that also claimed the lives of eleven other people, including the artist’s two young children.

This month marks 40 years since his passing. Green was undoubtedly one of the most talented Christian songwriters of his generation, although ‘There is a redeemer’, the song most associated with him, was actually penned by his wife, Melody. Throughout his short life, his uncompromising lyrics echoed the all-consuming passion for God that birthed his radical lifestyle.

EARLY YEARS

Green’s mother noted that he could hum ‘Rock-a-bye baby’ with perfect pitch at nine months old. His career arguably began at two-and-a-half, when he won a talent show. By seven, he was taking piano lessons and appeared in his first TV commercial; at eight he wrote his first song, and by eleven he had signed a five-year recording contract.

Although his family were culturally Jewish and practising Christian Scientists, there was nothing spiritual in his music at this stage; his early singles were about girls. Green was the youngest person to ever be signed to the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers.

This led to television shows and a phone call from the music entrepreneur Colonel Parker, who said that if he wasn’t fully tied up with managing Elvis, he would have taken Green on.

In his own words:

“I WOULD HAVE MET JESUS SOONER IF NOT FOR CHRISTIANS WHO LED DOUBLE LIVES.”

“No compromise is what the whole gospel of Jesus is all about. In a day when believers seem to be trying to please both the world and the Lord (which is an impossible thing), when people are far more concerned about offending their friends than offending God, there is only one answer…Deny yourself, take up your cross and follow him!”

“Why do we idolise Christian singers and speakers? We go from glorifying musicians in the world to glorifying Christian musicians. It’s all idolatry! Satan is getting a great victory as we seem to worship these ministers on tapes and records and clammer to get their autographs in churches and concert halls from coast to coast.”

DISAPPOINTMENT

Time magazine called Green “a pre-pubescent dreamboat”. But although his first single made the top ten in Hawaii, the fame he seemed destined for went to Donny Osmond, who arrived on the scene shortly after. The failure hit Green hard. While his classmates were looking to their futures, he was already an ‘almost-was’. At 15, he began running away from home, keen to explore the drugs, mysticism and free love of 1960s America.

On one occasion, after Green was picked up by police, his parents declined to bring him home thinking a night in jail might teach him a lesson. But he just wrote songs in his cell. Having no paper, he used the heel of his shoe to write on the wall.

SPIRITUAL SEARCH

While absconding again, Green discovered LSD and rang his friend, Todd Fishkind, to tell him: “I’ve found God!” Green had long been curious about spiritual things and thought LSD was key to knowing more, but after a frightening trip, decided taking hallucinogenic drugs was not the way.

Green knew about Jesus, but feared organised religion. By 1972, he had tried various different things in his search for meaning, including vegetarianism, Buddhism, tarot cards, astrology charts, Eastern mysticism and the occult Rosicrucian order, but nothing really satisfied.

The previous year, he had found out where Joni Mitchell lived and – finding her gate open – played a song outside her home with Fishkind. She opened the door and invited them in, letting Green play her piano.

Although he was thrilled to meet such an iconic singer-songwriter, he was deeply concerned that even she had questions – so what chance did he have to find answers?

As the year ended, Jesus was the only option left on Green’s list. So he spent some poker winnings on a 150-year-old cross, worn smooth by a monk’s prayers. Driving away, he found himself sobbing deeply and praying – although he still didn’t feel he knew God.

A year later, he bumped into an old friend, Harmony. When their conversation drifted onto Jesus, Harmony said: “I am Jesus Christ.” Green surprised himself by shooting back from Matthew 7:15: “Beware of false prophets who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves.” Harmony’s usually mild face convulsed into a sneer.

He leant towards Green, teeth bared, and let out a feral growl that ended with a snake-like hiss. It was as if he had been momentarily taken over.

The intensity of this experience startled Green and his then-girlfriend Melody, revealing the possibility that there were both light and dark sides to the spiritual realm.

KEITH ACTED AS IF HE KNEW HIS TIME ON EARTH WAS SHORT AND HE WANTED TO MAKE THE MOST OF IT FOR THE KINGDOM

TRANSFORMATION

Green was drawn deeply to Jesus, although very wary of his followers. Musician friend Randy Stonehill invited Green, and his now-wife Melody, to a Friday night Bible study at pastor Ken Gulliksen’s house. The couple cornered Gulliksen afterwards, asking questions. That night in 1975 they prayed to become Christians.

The transformation was instant and immediately reflected in Green’s songs. To find relief after years of searching meant that his lyrics were potent with evangelical zeal, captured well in the album title No Compromise. He had always sought to bring a spiritual message in his songs, and now that he knew where to direct listeners, he wasted no time.

Unfortunately, as Stonehill put it: “His zeal quite often got ahead of his emotional and spiritual maturity.” Having found the truth, he wanted everyone else to discover it too, but his tactless way of urging everyone to live a radical life riled even his closest friends.

Melody later recalled: “When we got saved, it was just like we were shot out of a cannon into another universe. We hit the ground running, and our whole mindset was: ‘This is the truth we’ve been looking for all of our lives; all our friends don’t know this.’ So we had a mission in our hearts.”

They would travel to parks or the beach, Green would play guitar, preach and together they would lead people to God. In the film The Keith Green Story, Melody recalled: “Everywhere we went, we were witnessing to people.

We found people with needs…Keith started saying: ‘Here’s a pregnant girl. She doesn’t know what to do. Let’s bring her home with us. Here’s this guy we picked up hitchhiking. He doesn’t have a place. Let’s bring him home.’”

Their three-bed suburban home housed 14 people, with another in the garage. As numbers grew, they bought the house next door. Then they rented another five properties, housing 65 people at one stage. More than just accommodation, this was a community focused on sheltering the needy and growing disciples. Requiring more space, the community eventually moved to rural Texas.

MUSIC

During this time, Keith secured a recording contract with Christian music label Sparrow, and released the album For Him Who Has Ears to Hear, which quickly sold 100,000 copies.

Green drew huge crowds, but saw himself not simply as an entertainer but as a messenger of God. He disliked charging for concerts, not wanting to be seen as profiting from ministry.

By 1980, Green’s give-what-you-can policy (beating Radiohead by decades) extended to record sales. Via his 100,000-strong mailing list, he released his third album, So You Wanna Go Back to Egypt? for whatever people wanted to pay. Nearly a third were given away free.

His fourth album, Songs for the Shepherd was a worship album. Just weeks after it was released, Green hosted a missionary family at their community and promised their kids a plane ride.

The Greens’ charity had a single-engine plane, but their ex-military pilot was insufficiently trained on civilian aircraft. All four adults and eight children on board died instantly when the plane crashed shortly after take-off.

In his final conversation with his wife before taking that flight, Green said: “If I don’t come back, raise Rebekah to be a woman of God.” Melody said the comment came “out of the blue”.

LEGACY

Green’s uncompromising life was an inspiration. Evangelist Winkie Pratney called him: “One of the most amazing men of this previous century.” A fellow artist called him: “abrasive, but anointed”. Stonehill said: “Most of the time, Keith acted as if he knew his time on the earth was short and he wanted to make the most of it for the kingdom.”

Green once said: “If your heart takes more pleasure in reading novels, or watching TV, or going to the movies, or talking to friends, rather than just sitting alone with God and embracing him, sharing his cares and his burdens, weeping and rejoicing with him, then how are you going to handle forever and ever in his presence? You’d be bored to tears in heaven, if you’re not ecstatic about God now!”

Privately, he was passionate about serving others, fiercely hungry for God and prepared to lose the comfortable domestic life he could have had. Publicly, he was unstoppable in his witnessing and indefatigable in his support for mission. We might have lost his life, but his values and evangelism can be found in his visceral, timeless music – and that lives on.

My favorite Christian music artist of all time is Keith Green.

Keith’s concerts were evangelistic and exhortational. He was the Lecrae of the 70’s. Here is what he has to say about the great commission:

“The world isn’t being won today because we’re not doing it. It’s our fault. This generation of Christians is responsible for this generation of souls on the earth. And no where in the world is the gospel so plentiful as here in the United States. No where. And I don’t want to see us stand before God on that day ans say, ‘but God I didn’t hear you call me.’ Here is something for all you to chew on, you don’t need to hear a call, you’re already called. In fact, if you stay home from going into all nations you had better be able to say to God, ‘You called me to stay home God, I know that as a fact.'”

25 Things You Never Knew About Keith Green

Wayne and I were very close to Keith from 1978-1982. We both served on the leadership of Last Days Ministries, and have many wonderful memories of Keith and those developing years of Last Days Ministries. Here are some inside Keith-facts.

1. Did you know that Keith wore flip flopseverywhere he went?

2. Did you know that Keith always had to share his food with everyone, because if he liked it, he knew you would too? It was the Jewish mother in him.

3. Did you know Keith was a real family man? He couldn’t stand to be separated from Melody or his kids for long.

4. Did you know that Keith was very soul searchingand could be harder on himself then he was on others?

5. Did you know Keith would sometimes cut his own hair; and even played barber shop with some of the other brothers at the ministry?

6. Did you know that Keith was a real night owl? He often got his best revelation late at night and would commonly call people at 2-3am to share his fresh insights.

7. Did you know that Keith used to mow the grassin Texas on a big tractor as a way to relax and to clear his head?

8. Did you know that Keith invited so many family and friends to witness the birth of his children, that it nearly became a public event?

9. Did you know that he always had a team of people praying while he was in the studio? Along with his talent, there were hours and hours of intercession that went into each album.

10. Did you know that Keith had a deep love for people and would get really involved with people he was ministering to?

11. Did you know that Keith would read the bible in the bathroom and got some of his best revelation in there?

12. Did you know that he loved to play racket ball? He also played tennis and ping pong, and was very competitive.

13. Did you know he loved to try new things? He learned to milk a cow, drive a tractor and run a printing press.

14. Did you know that he loved to go to auctions, and was able to furnish our facilities in East Texas saving thousands of dollars?

15. Did you know Keith shaved his beard when we moved to East Texas from California, to avoid offending the locals.

16. Did you know that Keith could type faster with 2 fingers than most of us can with 10?

17. Did you know Keith was really close friends with the famous revivalist, Leonard Ravenhill, and often went to him for counsel and advice?

18. Did you know he was the same off stage as he was on stage? With Keith, what you saw was who he was, he was genuine, sincere and real in all he did.

19 Did you know that Keith once drove the bus off the road in Hell’s Canyon, Utah leaving it dangling over a 2000 foot cliff? It took 2 bulldozers to lift it back onto the road.

20. Did you know Keith borrowed money on his house to sponsor the “So You Wanna Go back To Egypt”album so we could make them available to people for whatever they could afford?

21. Did you know Keith never received a salaryfrom the ministry?

22. Did you know that in spite of his success and popularity Keith lived a very simple life?

23. Did you know Keith loved to walk when he prayed? He could often be seen in an animated prayer walk going along the edge of our ministry property.

24. Did you know Keith led worship every Friday night at a prayer meeting led by Leonard Ravenhill near our ministry in East Texas?

25. Did you know Keith had a vision to do a restaurant that would offer food for whatever you could afford as a ministry outreach to the community?

Did you know Keith wasn’t perfect, but he held nothing back in serving Jesus and bringing others into God’s Kingdom.

Life Driven Purpose: How an Atheist Finds Meaning

My favorite Christian music artist of all time is Keith Green.

Keith Green passed away on July 28th, 1982 almost 39 years ago to the day!!! I want to remember him with a series of posts and today I have quoted below from a book about him!!!

I have read articles for years from Dan Barker, but recently I just finished the book Barker wrote entitled LIFE DRIVEN PURPOSE which was prompted by Rick Warren’s book PURPOSE DRIVEN LIFE which I also read several years ago.

Dan Barker is the  Co-President of the Freedom From Religion Foundation, And co-host of Freethought Radio and co-founder of The Clergy Project.

On March 19, 2022, I got an email back from Dan Barker that said:

Thanks for the insights.

Have you read my book Life Driven Purpose? To say there is no purpose OF life is not to say there is no purpose IN life. Life is immensely meaningful when you stop looking for external purpose.

Ukraine … we’ll, we can no longer blame Russian aggression on “godless communism.” The Russian church, as far as I know, has not denounced the war.

db

In the next few weeks I will be discussing the book LIFE DRIVEN PURPOSE which I did enjoy reading. Here is an assertion that Barker makes that I want to discuss:

On my Dad’s side I know a lot more. I learned just a little about his mother’s Cherokee and French grandparents, but thanks to the fact that his father, a Delaware Indian (or Lenape, the real name of our tribe), was quite a storyteller, we have a fuller picture of the paternal side of the family, as recounted in his memoirs, Paradise Remembered.3 In the introduction to the book, Legends of the Delaware Indians and Picture Writing, by Richard C. Adams, I found this historical note: On April 27, 1904, a general council of the Delaware tribe met at Dewey, Indian Territory, to assess the status of their claims against the government and to vote on the proposed settlement of those claims…. The council elected a committee of eleven men to discuss the issues and make a recommendation. These eleven men, who represented some of the leading families of the tribe, were: Stephen Miller, Jim Wilson, Simon Secondine, Charley Elkhair, William Smith, Arthur Armstrong, Jack Barker, John McCracken, John Kinney, Tom Lane, and John Willey.”4 My great-grandfather is in that list. Jack Barker, my Dad’s granddad, was part of that historic committee that voted to define the Delaware Tribe as “the 985 Registered Delawares on the Pratt Roll of 1867, taken in Kansas, and their living descendants.” That 1867 census had happened when about half the tribe left the reservation in Kansas to move to Indian Territory, which became part of Oklahoma in 1906.

I have a family history that includes great, great, great, great grandparents who moved from Manchester, England in the 1700’s to Virginia and to the Nashville, Tennessee area in 1830 or so.

I remember talking to my grandfather, Everette Hatcher Sr, (1903-1988), in the late 1970’s and he told me of a time around 1910 at a family dinner when his great aunt was in attendance. Something was said about Lincoln or Grant and his aunt started shouting at the person who mentioned the dreaded northern name. My grandfather asked after the meal why she was so angry and it was explained to him that his great aunt was present as a youth at their family farm in Thompson Station, Tennessee when the Yankees came and took on one occasion many of their cattle and much of their food during the civil war.

I never gave that story a second thought until I mentioned it to a friend a few months ago and he went to the website https://www.thompsons-station.com/2158/History and came up with this from the history books:

During the latter stages of the Civil War, Union troops garrisoned in Nashville and Franklin frequently reconnoitered and foraged for food as far south as Thompson’s Station and Spring Hill. In the spring of 1863, the Federal Army made several expeditions into the area to collect food and hay.

It then occurred to me that I had just verified a historical event that happened 150 years ago that I had heard about 2nd hand through my grandfather. Chills went up my spine.

A lot can be learned from history and archaeology!!!

Francis Schaeffer has correctly argued:

The universe was created by an infinite personal God and He brought it into existence by spoken word and made man in His own image. When man tries to reduce [philosophically in a materialistic point of view] himself to less than this [less than being made in the image of God] he will always fail and he will always be willing to make these impossible leaps into the area of nonreason even though they don’t give an answer simply because that isn’t what he is. He himself testifies that this infinite personal God, the God of the Old and New Testament is there.

Instead of making a leap into the area of nonreason the better choice would be to investigate the claims that the Bible is a historically accurate book and that God created the universe and reached out to humankind with the Bible.
(Tim Caldwell below)

Last week the sermon by Rev Tim Caldwell at our church FELLOWSHIP BIBLE in Little Rock was on Genesis 12 and it included these 3 verses about Israel and the Jewish people.

12 Now (A)the Lord said[a] to Abram, “Go from your country[b] and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. 2 (B)And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. 3 (C)I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and (D)in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”[c]

This passage made me think long and hard about two Jewish people who had a hard time accepting Jesus was the messiah and would bless so many millions!

EXACTLY 40 years ago my favorite singer Keith Green passed on July 28, 1982. Keith and his wife Melody were Jewish and they had a hard time accepting that Jesus was Lord. Here is how Melody put it:

Keithgreen.jpg

Afterward we went out to eat with Todd, and he and Keith continued their ongoing arguments. “What about Philippians, chapter two?” Todd challenged. He quoted a passage that said Jesus was “in the form of God” although he came to earth as a humble servant. Because Jesus had suffered death on the cross, the Bible said, “God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name—” “Okay,” Keith countered, “so I agree that God has exalted Jesus. But it still doesn’t say he was God, directly anyway. You see, I can argue every one of your Scriptures away,” Keith said self-assuredly.…As Kenn Gullikson shared, we realized that the idea in the Bible is not that a man became God, but that God himself came as a man. To us, this made a huge difference! We remembered reading something in the Old Testament, where the coming Messiah was portrayed as coming as a child, but also being a son and a Father. It was in Isaiah 9:6: “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, the mighty God, the everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace.”

(The Association of Vineyard Churches, was started by Kenn Gulliksen)

It also seemed clear in the New Testament that following Jesus was the most Jewish thing a Jew could do. I was stunned to realize it was the Gentiles who were making a switch if they wanted to follow Jesus. They were being “grafted in” to the root of Judaism! And Jesus loved us all equally and set us free to love each other. New believers, 1975 On top of all that, I’d recently learned that Jesus fulfilled more than three hundred Old Testament prophecies about the coming Messiah, including where he’d be born and that he would be rejected. One prophecy in particular impacted me deeply. I couldn’t believe it was actually in the Old Testament. I’d never heard it before. The Jewish prophet Isaiah talked about the kind of punishment and death the Messiah would suffer. That when he died he would be pierced for our sins. Pierced! That word blew my mind. If that didn’t describe Roman crucifixion, I don’t know what did! There was no prescribed Jewish death penalty that included piercing. Isaiah said that he also carried all of our sins, paying the death penalty for all of mankind to gain forgiveness at once. He was the spotless Lamb of God. Our eternal sacrifice. It’s what Kenn was explaining last week. And there it was in chapter fifty-three straight from Isaiah’s mouth. He was pierced through for our transgressions,
He was crushed for our iniquities;
The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him,
And by His scourging we are healed. (v. 5 NASB) I read it over and over again all week, and it pretty much sealed the deal for me on the Jewish side of things. But maybe the most important thing I learned was that the closer I got to Jesus, the more my spirit was coming alive. The more I opened my heart to him, the more excitement and genuine peace I was experiencing—more than I’d ever known. By the end of the week, I had what my heart needed. I’d made what I called the “Jewish Connection.” I wouldn’t be betraying my Judaism to follow Jesus. I just needed to receive the gift that Kenn talked about. Yes, I would receive Jesus as the promised Jewish Messiah for all of mankind. It suddenly seemed foolish not to.

My pic with Bill Kristol

On Friday July 18, 2014 I had the opportunity to visit personally with Bill Kristol who is the founder of THE WEEKLY STANDARD MAGAZINE. I told him that I had the privilege to correspond with both his father, Irving Kristol, and his father’s good friend Daniel Bell back in 1995. I actually gave him a copy of both letters I received back from them and he read them both as we stood there. I told him that those copies were his to keep, and he thanked me for that.

I went on to explain how the correspondence started.  I had come across several quotes from Daniel Bell when I was reading the books HOW SHOULD WE THEN LIVE?  and WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE HUMAN RACE? by Francis Schaeffer (and this second book was co-authored by Dr. C. Everett Koop). Dr. Koop’s name caught Mr. Kristol’s attention and he said he found that interesting. I pointed out those quotes by Bell led me to eventually begin a correspondence with both Bell and Kristol’s father Irving on the subject of what the Old Testament scriptures have to say about the Jews being returned from all over the world back to the land of Israel.

Daniel Bell (May 10, 1919 – January 25, 2011)[1]

Irving Kristol (/ˈkrɪstəl/; January 22, 1920 – September 18, 2009)

Irving Kristol.jpg

Finally, I asked how his mother was doing and he said that she was doing very well in fact. I told him how much I respected her work as a historian.

Let me make a few observations about Irving Kristol who I was very fascinated with because of some of his comments in the 1990′s. First, isn’t it worth noting that the Old Testament predicted that the Jews would regather from all over the world and form a new reborn nation of Israel. Second, it was also predicted that the nation of Israel would become a stumbling block to the whole world. Third, it was predicted that the Hebrew language would be used again as the Jews first language even though we know in 1948 that Hebrew at that time was a dead language!!!Fourth, it was predicted that the Jews would never again be removed from their land.

You want some evidence that indicates that the Bible is true? Here is a good place to start and that is taking a closer look at the archaeology of the Old Testament times. Is the Bible historically accurate? Here are some of the posts I have done in the past on the subject: 1. The Babylonian Chronicleof Nebuchadnezzars Siege of Jerusalem, 2. Hezekiah’s Siloam Tunnel Inscription. 3. Taylor Prism (Sennacherib Hexagonal Prism), 4. Biblical Cities Attested Archaeologically. 5. The Discovery of the Hittites, 6.Shishak Smiting His Captives, 7. Moabite Stone, 8. Black Obelisk of Shalmaneser III9A Verification of places in Gospel of John and Book of Acts., 9B Discovery of Ebla Tablets10. Cyrus Cylinder11. Puru “The lot of Yahali” 9th Century B.C.E.12. The Uzziah Tablet Inscription13. The Pilate Inscription14. Caiaphas Ossuary14 B Pontius Pilate Part 214c. Three greatest American Archaeologists moved to accept Bible’s accuracy through archaeology.

The Keith Green Story pt 4/7

Keith Green had a major impact on me back in 1978 when I first heard him. Here is his story below:

Last Days Ministries

In 1978, Last Days Ministries (LDM) began publishing the Last Days Newsletter. Originally printed on a few pages of loose paper, the newsletter grew in content to eventually become a “small, colorful magazine,” and was renamed in mid-1985 as Last Days Magazine. The magazine featured articles by Green and his wife as well as contemporary Christian authors David Wilkerson, Leonard Ravenhill, and Winkie Pratney, all of whom lived in the area. The publication also later included the reprinted works of classic Christian authors such as Charles Finney, John Wesley, and William Booth and his wife Catherine. Most of the articles were reprinted as tracts. At the peak of its popularity, the Last Days Magazine was sent out to over 300,000 people worldwide.

In 1979, the ministry relocated from the San Fernando Valley to a 40-acre (160,000 m2) plot of land in Garden Valley, Texas, a crossroads community about nine miles (14 km) west of Lindale, Texas. Within a few years, Last Days purchased additional land, bringing the total to 140 acres (0.6 km2).

Plane crash

Gravesite at Garden Valley Cemetery

Along with eleven others, Keith Green died on , 1982, when the Cessna 414 leased by Last Days Ministries crashed after takeoff from the private airstrip located on the LDM property. The small two-engine plane was carrying eleven passengers and the pilot, Don Burmeister, for an aerial tour of the LDM property and the surrounding area. Green and two of his children, three year old Josiah, and two year old Bethany, were on board the plane, along with visiting missionaries John and Dede Smalley and their six children.

Among several causes, the NTSB determined that the crash was largely due to aircraft gross weight overload. It was determined that the pilot, should have refused to take five more passengers than there were seats on the plane. As Burmaster was a former United States Marine Corps aviator, the NTSB concluded that since military requirements put weight and balance responsibilities on the loadmaster of the flight and not the pilot, the pilot may have neglected this responsibility by former habit. With eleven passengers on board, the aircraft was overloaded by nearly 450 pounds (202 kg) and laden center of gravity was located 4.5 inches (110 mm) past the maximum aft limit. Also considered in the final ruling was the fact that operator and pilot did not satisfy insurance requirements for aircraft familiarization for operation, and pilot’s failure of several checkrides, leading to the revocation of Burmaster’s license shortly before the accident.

Keith, Josiah, and Bethany Green are interred at Garden Valley Cemetery behind the Garden Valley Baptist Church, less than a half-mile from the LDM property. He was survived by his wife and two daughters, the youngest of whom was born after Green’s death.

Legacy

Two full albums of original Green songs were released posthumously: The Prodigal Son (1983) and Jesus Commands Us to Go! (1984). Another release, I Only Want to See You There (1983) contained mostly previously released material. A complete volume of his work, The Ministry Years, was released in 1987 and 1988, including a few more previously unreleased songs.

Another unreleased Christian song known to have been recorded by Green was “Born Again,” which was finally released in 1999, 17 years after his death, on the First Love compilation video and CD. Both feature a two-song tribute to Green by other Christian artists.

In 2008, Last Days Ministries and Sparrow Records partnered together and released The Live Experience – Special Edition, a CD+DVD combination of 16 live recordings and 4 hours of DVD footage including video of live performances as well as details regarding Green’s life and his passing.  A “Greatest Hits” album was also released at the same time, including 17 of Green’s most popular songs and one more previously unreleased Christian song, “Your Love Came Over Me”.

A prolific personal journalist, Green’s writings were published as excerpts in the books A Cry In The Wilderness (Sparrow, 1993), If You Love the Lord (Harvest House, 2000), and Make My Life a Prayer (Harvest House, 2001).

Quotes

“It’s time to quit playing church and start being the Church (Matt. 18:20)” ? Keith Green, as quoted by Melody Green in the introduction to A Cry in the Wilderness, Sparrow Press, 1993.

“I repent of ever having recorded one single song, and ever having performed one concert, if my music, and more importantly, my life has not provoked you into Godly jealousy or to sell out more completely to Jesus!” ? Keith Green

“You shouldn’t go to college unless God has definitely called you to go.” ? Keith Green, ‘Why YOU should go to the mission field’, 1982

“No Compromise is what the whole Gospel of Jesus is all about… ‘For I tell you…no man can serve two masters…’ (Matt. 6:24). In a day when believers seem to be trying to please both the world and the Lord (which is an impossible thing), when people are far more concerned about offending their friends than offending God, there is only one answer…Deny yourself, take up your cross and follow Him!” ? Keith Green, No Compromise album, 1978.

“He, being dead, yet speaketh.” ? Leonard Ravenhill, Keith’s mentor, borrowing from Hebrews 11:4 (KJV) in his 1990 2-page Memories of Keith tribute from a computer file, part of the Enhanced CD version of No Compromise by Melody Green with David Hazard.

The Keith Green Story pt 3/7

Keith Green had a major impact on me back in 1978 when I first heard him. Here is his story below:

Spiritual Conversion

Keith had a Jewish and Christian Science background, but grew up reading the New Testament. He called it “an odd combination” that left him open minded but deeply unsatisfied. His journey led him to drugs, South Asian mysticism, and “free love.” After experiencing what Green described as a “bad trip,” he abandoned drug use and became bitter towards philosophy and theology in general. Green would later state, however, that in the midst of his skepticism, he felt that God “broke through calloused heart,” and he became a born-again Christian. Soon afterward, Keith’s wife Melody (whom he had married on Christmas Day 1973) also became a born-again Christian. It was during this time that the newlyweds became involved with the Vineyard Christian Fellowship in Southern California.

Ministry

In 1975, the Greens began an outreach program in the suburbs of Los Angeles, California, in the San Fernando Valley. Purchasing the home next door to their own and renting an additional five in the same neighborhood, Keith and Melody provided a environment of Christian teaching for a group of young adults, the majority of whom were of college age. Much to the consternation of neighbors, those living in the Green’s homes included former drug addicts, the homeless and even some prostitutes who had been referred to the Greens by other ministries and shelters. In 1977, the Greens outreach was officially named Last Days Ministries.

Keith Green’s initial tone of ministry was largely influenced by Leonard Ravenhill, who pointed Keith to Charles Finney, a nineteenth century revivalist preacher who preached the law of God to provoke conviction in his hearers.  During his concerts he would often exhort his listeners to repent and commit themselves more wholly to following Christ.  Green later softened his approach, and this transition is evident in his music beginning with So You Wanna Go Back To Egypt in 1980.
Recording

Green was signed to Contemporary Christian music label Sparrow Records in 1976 and worked on the album Firewind (1976) with Christian artists 2nd Chapter of Acts, Terry Talbot, John Michael Talbot, and Barry McGuire. His first solo project, For Him Who Has Ears to Hear, was released in 1977 and his second solo release, No Compromise, followed in 1978.

In 1979, after negotiating a release from his contract with Sparrow, Green initiated a new policy of refusing to charge money for concerts or albums. Keith and Melody mortgaged their home to privately finance Green’s next album, So You Wanna Go Back To Egypt. The album, which featured a guest appearance by Bob Dylan, was offered through mail-order and at concerts for a price determined by the purchaser. As of May 1982, Green had shipped out more than 200,000 units of his album ? 61,000 for free. Subsequent albums included The Keith Green Collection (1981) and Songs For The Shepherd (1982).

When his music was carried by Christian bookstores, a second cassette was included free of charge for every cassette purchased to give away to a friend to help spread the Gospel.

The Keith Green Story pt 6/7

When I first heard Keith Green in 1978 it had a major impact on my life. Below is his story:

LEGEND

Keith Green

CBN.com – When musician Keith Green died in a plane crash on July 28, 1982, the world lost a special man whose heart was aflame with the gospel message. Before his untimely end, Green took the world on his seven-year spiritual journey. He held back nothing and was consumed with loving Christ and the church.

On October 21, 1953, Keith Green was born into musical talent. His maternal grandfather was a songwriter and his mother studied voice at Carnegie Hall. By five years old, Green played the ukulele and began formal music lessons. He was writing his own music by age 9. Two years later, Green signed with Decca Records. Time magazine called Green a “pre-pubescent dreamboat” who “croons in a voice trembling with conviction.” He was the youngest member of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers, and played on The Jack Benny Show and The Joey Bishop Show. Green was on the cusp of pop music success until he was displaced by another budding teen idol, Donny Osmond.

After a troubled youth, he married singer/songwriter Melody Steiner in 1973. They struggled to financially and spiritually sought after the meaning of life. Growing up in the drug-induced, anti-establishment ‘60s era led them both to reject organized religion and dabble in eastern mysticism.

Green discovered Christ in the mid-70s. As he attended church and delved deeper into the Bible, Green was increasingly troubled by the hypocrisy of Christians. He longed to reach people through his music and drive them back to holiness. With vocals like Cat Stevens and the piano talent of Elton John, Green recorded his first album in 1977, For Him Who Has Ears to Hear on Sparrow Records. The album, produced by Bill Maxwell, was a commercial success. It later earned the No. 5 spot in CCM’s Greatest Albums in Christian Music. Hits like “Your Love Broke Through” (co-written by friend Randy Stonehill) and “You Put This Love in My Heart” encapsulated Green’s relationship with Jesus. It also had 2nd Chapter of Acts’ “Easter Song.” That same year the Greens started Last Days Ministries with a newsletter that reached 22,000 people.

No Compromise came in November of 1978. “Asleep in the Light,” a radio hit, drove home Green’s conviction for the hypocrites in the church. Penning his most confrontational lyrics, he sang: “Jesus rose from the dead / And you can’t even get out of bed.” Green also mourned the lost souls he encountered in Los Angeles in “How Can They Live Without Jesus.”

Green released So You Wanna Go Back to Egypt in 1980. The title track is a light-hearted view of the little things that become obstacles in the Christian walk. He also sang the worshipful “Oh Lord You’re Beautiful” and an ode to laying down his possessions in “Pledge My Head to Heaven.” Green refused to let money be an obstacle in spreading the gospel. His third album sold 200,000 copies, and most of his albums were given away at concerts.

The last album Green ever co-produced was 1982’s Songs for the Shepherd. Stepping away from convicting the wayward Christian, Songs for the Shepherd was 12 tracks of praise and worship to God including “How Majestic Is Thy Name” and “You Are the One.” The eerily titled “Until the Final Day” showed a weary but faithful Green crying out for God’s strength. The “final day” came all too soon when he and two of his young children lost their lives just three months after its release.

Maxwell produced and released two posthumous albums, The Prodigal Son and Jesus Commands Us to Go. In 2001, Green was inducted into the Gospel Music Association Hall of Fame along with Jesus rocker Larry Norman. His wife actively maintains Last Day Ministries. Melody wrote her husband’s biography in 1989 from his journal entries. It was appropriately titled “No Compromise.” It revealed the meaning Green found in his life, which he summed up as: “I repent of ever having recorded one single song, and ever having performed one concert, if my music, and more importantly, my life has not provoked you into Godly jealousy or to sell out more completely to Jesus!”

The Keith Green Story pt 7/7

I remember when I first Keith Green. He had a great impact on me. Below are some quotes on Keith:

Quotes

“It’s time to quit playing church and start being the Church (Matt. 18:20)” — Keith Green, as quoted by Melody Green in the introduction to A Cry in the Wilderness, Sparrow Press, 1993.

“I repent of ever having recorded one single song, and ever having performed one concert, if my music, and more importantly, my life has not provoked you into Godly jealousy or to sell out more completely to Jesus!” — Keith Green

“You shouldn’t go to college unless God has definitely called you to go.” — Keith Green, ‘Why YOU should go to the mission field’, 1982

“No Compromise is what the whole Gospel of Jesus is all about… ‘For I tell you…no man can serve two masters…’ (Matt. 6:24). No Compromise
No Compromise is the second album release by American pianist and gospel singer Keith Green, released in 1978.The album’s title derives from track #2, ‘Make My Life A Prayer To You’, which begins: “Make my life a prayer to You / I wanna do what You want me to / No empty words and no white lies / no…

album, 1978.

“If your heart takes more pleasure in reading novels, or watching TV, or going to the movies, or talking to friends, rather than just sitting alone with God and embracing Him, sharing His cares and His burdens, weeping and rejoicing with Him, then how are you going to handle forever and ever in His presence? You’d be bored to tears in heaven, if you’re not ecstatic about God now!!” — Keith Green

“The only music minister to whom the Lord will say, “Well done, thy good and faithful servant,” is the one whose life proves what their lyrics are saying, and to whom music is the least important part of their life. Glorifying the only worthy One has to be a minister’s most important goal!!!” — Keith Green

Keith Green – Your Love Broke Through

Here is something I got off the internet and this website has lots of Keith’s great songs:

Keith Green: His Music, Ministry, and Legacy

My mom hung up the phone and broke into tears. She had just heard the news of Keith Green’s death. I was only ten on that summer day in 1982, but the memory is still clear. It felt almost like a death in the family. We often listened to Keith Green’s music and it has permeated deep into me. Even now when I read the story of the prodigal son, I hear his “Prodigal Son Suite” in my mind. I can’t read about the Israelites wandering in the desert without chuckling over his goofy manna improvisation in “So You Wanna Go Back to Egypt” (Ba-manna Bread!). Even now, about three decades later, Keith Green is one of the most-played artists in my iTunes library. My kids and I dance to his “Scripture Song Medley.” Every Easter, I play “The Easter Song” and “The Victor” as soon as I wake up. Read on for more about Keith Green’s music, his ministry and his enduring legacy.

Great song by the religious group 2nd Chapter of Acts, but originally by Keith Green and his friend Todd Fishkind. Lead vocals by Phil Keggy. Speaks of a man who found God. I DO NOT OWN THIS SONG AND CLAIM NO COPYWRITE.

Like a dreamer who was trying to build a highway to the sky
All my hopes would come tumbling down
And I never knew just why until today
When you pulled away the clouds that hung like curtains on my eyes
I was blind, all these wasted years I thought I was so wise
But then you took me by surprise
Like waking up from the longest dream
How real it seemed
Until your love broke through
And I was lost in a fantasy
That rhymed at me
Until your love broke through
All my life I have been searching
For that crazy missing part
With one touch you just rolled the storm that held my heart
Now I see that the answer was as simple as my need to let you in
And I am so sure that I could never doubt your gentle touch again
It’s like the power of the wind
Like waking up from the longest dream
How real it seemed
Until your love broke through
And I was lost in a fantasy
That rhymed at me
Until your love broke through
Like waking up from the longest dream
How real it seemed
Until your love broke through
