Bobby Petrino to survive this wreck?

Arkansas’ Jeff Long Addresses The Media About Bobby Petrino’s Affair

Petrino will survive this wreck. Of course, I am speaking of two wrecks. The wreck he is trying to make of his marriage and the motorcycle wreck. It seems that most of the fans are mainly concerned about his physical health so he can coach us to more victories.

Here is what ESPN had to say:

Is this a storm Bobby Petrino can survive?

By Chris Low | ESPN.com
PetrinoAP Photo/Beth HallThe breaking scandal has coach Bobby Petrino on thin ice at Arkansas.

Football coaches who win at a high level have been known to survive the most serious of storms.

The storm that has engulfed Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino might get worse before it gets better, and it has already become a huge embarrassment for the university.

Petrino’s success on the field and the way he has made Arkansas relevant again nationally will weigh heavily in his corner, but the stigma that’s sure to follow him now might be too much to overcome.

Furthermore, who knows what other details might be out there concerning his motorcycle crash last Sunday night, and more specifically, his relationship with the 25-year-old woman he was riding with when the crash occurred? She’s the same woman, Jessica Dorrell, who was hired last month as the student-athlete development coordinator for football. She works under Petrino and oversees on-campus recruiting.

Clearly, Petrino’s bosses are ticked. Arkansas athletic director Jeff Long announced at a press conference late Thursday night that Petrino had been placed on paid leave, and Long said he would conduct a review of both Petrino and Dorrell.

While Petrino’s away, Long said assistant head coach and linebackers coach Taver Johnson would serve as Arkansas’ interim head coach. The Hogs are in the middle of spring practice and will play their spring game April 21.

Ultimately, what Long will have to decide is whether or not Petrino violated the terms of his contract, which has a clause in it that would allow Arkansas to fire Petrino for “engaging in conduct, as solely determined by the university, which is clearly contrary to the character and responsibilities of a person occupying the position of head football coach or which negatively or adversely affects the reputation of the (university’s) athletics programs in any way.”

Lying or misleading the media is one thing. The same goes for the public. But when you’re not forthcoming with your bosses, that’s one of those things that tends to resonate.

Only when an Arkansas state police report confirmed Thursday that Dorrell was riding with Petrino did he come clean after initially saying through a statement released by university officials that he was alone when he crashed. He repeated that claim after finishing up his news conference on Tuesday when asked specifically by a media member if he had been alone during the crash.

Long said he didn’t find out until Thursday afternoon from Petrino that Dorrell was riding with the Hogs’ head coach, and it was later Thursday that Petrino, who is married and has four children, issued another statement acknowledging a previous inappropriate relationship.

It only muddies the situation that, according to several reports, Dorrell was engaged to marry the Hogs’ director of swimming and diving operations, Josh Morgan, in June.

Bobby Petrino
Nelson Chenault/US PresswireArkansas administrators must weigh Bobby Petrino’s on-field accomplishments against his off-field actions.

Here’s Petrino’s statement in full, in which he expresses his desire to remain as Arkansas head coach:

“The state police report today provides an accurate description of my accident, which includes details that had not publically come to light prior to the report being issued. I regret that I have not publically acknowledged a passenger on the vehicle. I have been in constant pain, medicated and the circumstances involving the wreck have come out in bits and pieces. That said I certainly had a concern about Jessica Dorrell’s name being revealed. In my press conference, I referred to her simply as ‘a lady’. My concern was to protect my family and a previous inappropriate relationship from becoming public. In hindsight, I showed a serious mistake in judgment when I chose not to be more specific about those details. Today, I’ve acknowledged this previous inappropriate relationship with my family and those within the athletic department administration.

I apologize to my wife, Becky, and our four children, Chancellor (David) Gearhart, Jeff Long, the Board of Trustees, University administration, my coaching staff, student-athletes and the entire state of Arkansas. I have been humbled by the outpouring of concern and get-well wishes. I apologize to the Razorback Nation for the attention my actions have brought to the University of Arkansas and our program. I will fully cooperate with the University throughout this process and my hope is to repair my relationships with my family, my Athletic Director, the Razorback Nation and remain the head coach of the Razorbacks.”

Much will be made about the “previous inappropriate relationship” Petrino speaks of and the fact that Dorrell was out riding the countryside with him.

But the two biggest factors working against Petrino are, No. 1, that he wasn’t truthful with his superiors about the accident and lied about it publicly, and No. 2, that Dorrell was somebody who was hired to work under Petrino in the football office. If a “previous inappropriate relationship” with Petrino did indeed lead to her hiring, that’s bad news for everybody involved.

It’s especially bad news for the Arkansas fans, who deserved better.

Just when you thought the Hogs might be on the verge of breaking through and joining the SEC party in the national championship equation, this happens.

Petrino was dug in, too. He signed a contract two Decembers ago that more or less locked him down at Arkansas for the foreseeable future. I can also tell you from my conversations with Petrino that he truly believed that he could win a national championship at Arkansas and that the Hogs weren’t that far away.

The job he’d done to this point was exemplary, and even though he was castigated for leaving the Atlanta Falcons before the 2007 season was over, it was a coup for Arkansas to get a coach of Petrino’s caliber.

It all seemed to be pointing in the right direction for the Hogs, who played in their first-ever BCS bowl game in 2010 and then followed that up with 11 wins last season.

Now, in the wake of one forgettable motorcycle crash, it remains to be seen whether Petrino will get a chance to finish what he started.

Francis Schaeffer’s film series “How should we then live?” (The Renaissance) can be seen on the www.thedailyhatch.org

Francis and Edith Schaeffer January 1975
Huemoz sur Ollon at L’abri, Switzerland

Here is a portion of the third episode on “The Renaissance.” You need to check this film out. It is great:

How Should We Then Live 3-1

I was impacted by this film series by Francis Schaeffer back in the 1970’s and I wanted to share it with you. Schaeffer really shows why we have so many problems today with this excellent episode. He noted, “Could have gone either way—with emphasis on real people living in a real world which God had made, or humanism could take over with its emphasis on the individual things being autonomous…Humanism’s problem: What is the meaning of individual things, including Man, if there is no final thing to relate them to? And how do we know what is right or wrong if there is no absolute to give us certainty? Humanism ends with only statistical averages.” That is exactly where we are today in 2011. Just left with no final answers, but just with statistical averages.

E P I S O D E 3

T h e RENAISSANCE

I. The Art of the Renaissance Is One of Mankind’s Glories

A. The artists reflect their culture.

B. The artists often provide the way for the next step in culture.

1. Positive emphasis on nature in Giotto’s art.

2. Significance of work of Masaccio.

3. Perspective as a form of humanism.

4. Parallel and supportive developments in Low Countries. Van Eyck’s Adoration of the Lamb, the substitutionary work of the crucified and risen Christ. Also an example of landscape naturalism.

5. Dante’s life and work.

a) Following Aquinas, he mixed Christian and classical elements.

b) Dichotomy in Dante and other writers between sensual and idealized, spiritual love.

6. Brunelleschi’s architecture and the conquest of space.

7. Trend to autobiography and self-portraiture a mark of emphasis on Man.

C. Italian Renaissance music.

1. Invention of orchestration.

2. Invention of movable type for music.

II. Increased Drift Toward a Total Humanism

A. Could have gone either way—with emphasis on real people living in a real world which God had made, orhumanism could take over with its emphasis on the individual things being autonomous.

B. The die was cast: Man tried to make himself independent, autonomous.

C. A growing humanism sees what preceded the Renaissance as the “Dark Ages.”

D. Idea of a “Dark Age” and a “rebirth” in Renaissance.

E. Aquinas had opened the door for that which is the problem of humanism.

Who is Jessica Dorrell? (with pictures)

Sometimes you just have to laugh in order to keep from crying. These missteps by Bobby Petrino this week may be one of those cases. (UPDATE: It resulted in Petrino’s firing.) My former pastor Adrian Rogers used to say, “If you don’t want to slip down then don’t walk in slick places.” Bobby Petrino made Jessica a close assistant and that was a real bad idea. She is not ugly enough to cut down on the temptation. True happiness is found from other things than the outside anyway so don’t always chase the good looking girl!!! Jimmy Soul had a great hit song (very funny) that went like this:

If you wanna be happy for the rest of your life
Never make a pretty woman your wife
So from my personal point of view
Get an ugly girl to marry you

If you wanna be happy for the rest of your life
Never make a pretty woman your wife
So from my personal point of view
Get an ugly girl to marry you

A pretty woman makes her husband look small
And very often causes his downfall
As soon as he marries her then she starts
To do the things that will break his heart

But if you make an ugly woman your wife
you’ll be happy for the rest of your life
An ugly woman cooks meals on time
And she’ll always give you peace of mind

Obama’s big government solutions have not worked

Government Spending Doesn’t Create Jobs

In the debate of job creation and how best to pursue it as a policy goal, one point is forgotten: Government doesn’t create jobs. Government only diverts resources from one use to another, which doesn’t create new employment.

Obama Has Tried All the Wrong Policies

The Minneapolis Federal Reserve Bank has a very useful interactive website that allows anybody to compare recessions and recoveries during the post-World War II era. It takes only a couple of clicks to complete the exercise, and does not reflect well on the current occupant of the White House—as you can see at this link.

This does not mean that Obama caused the economic downturn. That was the result of policies that were implemented during the Bush years (though the current president was a big supporter of the Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac subsidies that played such a big role in the financial crisis). Indeed, the recession officially began in December 2007, more than one year before Obama’s inauguration.

Taking money out of the economy’s productive sector and letting politicians engage in a spending spree is the opposite of prudent policy.

But we can hold the president at least partially responsible for an extraordinarily weak and slow recovery. It’s been nearly three years since the recession officially ended in June 2009, yet jobs are still well below their pre-recession levels. And overall economic output, or gross domestic product, has just now finally gotten back to where it was when the downturn began.

This is an anemic record. Especially since an economy normally enjoys a strong bounce when coming out of a deep recession.

The problem is that Obama has tried all the wrong policies. He tried a big-spending Keynesian package that was supposed to be a “stimulus,” butthat’s the same failed approach that Bush tried in 2008, the same failed approach that Japan tried in the 1990s, and the same failed approach that Hoover and Roosevelt tried in the 1930s. Taking money out of the economy’s productive sector and letting politicians engage in a spending spree is the opposite of prudent policy.

The president also has continuously expanded subsidies for unemployment, even though academic scholars (and even left-wing economists) all agree that such policies cause more joblessness.

And now he’s demanding higher tax rates, holding a Sword of Damocles over entrepreneurs, investors, and small business owners.

The nation recently endured eight years of a big-spending interventionist in the White House. The problem with Obama is that he promised hope and change, but he’s continuing the failed statist policies of his predecessor.

UA places Petrino on administrative leave

Posted by Max Brantley on Thu, Apr 5, 2012 at 10:09 PM

AT NEWS CONFERENCE: Jeff Long.

  • AT NEWS CONFERENCE: Jeff Long.

University of Arkansas Athletic Director Jeff Long announced at a 10 p.m. news conference that he’d placed football coach Bobby Petrino on paid administrative leave as a result of learning today that Petrino was not alone in the motorcycle crash Sunday.

Assistant Coach Taver Johnson will take over while Long said he considers the situation. He didn’t give a timetable but said he’d move “expeditiously”. Johnson said he met with Petrino tonight at 7:15, at which time Petrino acknowledged he had not told Long the full story about Sunday’s motorcycle accident, which involved Jessica Dorrell, a 25-year-old football staff employee. Long said Petrino first told him of the information in a phone call about 3:25 p.m. This was about an hour after release of the State Police report.

Long said he was disappointed in learning Petrino had not been forthcoming about the accident. The university earlier had relayed Petrino’s statement that no one else was involved in the accident and, until the late-night event at UA, had not acknowledged that was in error.

Long fielded several questions from reporters, but deferred specific responses to most pending further review. He declined to answer specifically a question about Dorrell, whom Petrino has indicated now he’d tried to protect. He said he was trying “to protect my family and a previous inappropriate relationship from becoming public.” Long said he’d spoken briefly with Dorrell. (You can replay Long news conference here.)

Obamacare was pushed through in the first place with at best minimal concern for congressional rules, no wonder the Supreme Court may terminate it

Milton Friedman – Socialized Medicine at Mayo Clinic in 1978

I have always opposed Obamacare because it the government control of giving anyone the right to have an abortion paid for by the government and I think that is wrong. However, there are some constitution problems with this power grab of Obamacare too. This article below from the Cato Institute makes this point:

Yes, We Can Wait

by Michael D. Tanner

Michael Tanner is a senior fellow at the Cato Institute and author of Leviathan on the Right: How Big-Government Conservatism Brought Down the Republican Revolution.

Added to cato.org on March 28, 2012

This article appeared in National Review (Online) on March 28, 2012

In pushing through parts of the New Deal, President Franklin Roosevelt reportedly told one wavering congressman, “I hope you will not permit doubts as to constitutionality, however reasonable, to block the suggested legislation.”

As one listens to the Obama administration and others defend the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (a.k.a Obamacare), one gets the impression that Roosevelt’s nostrum has been adopted as the official motto of this administration. Their attitude seems to be that, of course Obamacare is constitutional because, well, because it’s important.

The idea that federal government’s power should be limited is dismissed as a quaint relic of a bygone age. There are important national problems to be solved, and we should not be held back by a document from the past. As Representative Kathy Hochul (D., N.Y.) puts it, “Basically we are not looking at the Constitution… The decision has been made by this Congress that American citizens are entitled to health care.”

The genius of the American system is that we are a government of laws and not of men.

This attitude is on display in other areas as well. Constitutional niceties, legislative rules, and democratic debate are all impediments to be dispensed with when “we can’t wait.”

For example, the administration apparently grew tired of Republican opposition to the appointment of Richard Cordray as head of the new Consumer Financial Protection Agency created under the Dodd-Frank law, so they simply made a recess appointment of Cordray — despite the fact that Congress was not in recess. President Obama used the same non-recess recess appointment to name three new members to the National Labor Relations Board. When asked how he could justify doing so, the president simply shrugged and said, “I refuse to take ‘no’ for an answer. I am not going to stand by while a minority in the Senate puts party ideology ahead of the people we were elected to serve.”

President Bush was justly criticized for his extraordinary use of executive orders and signing statements to avoid the untidiness of the legislative process. But President Obama has adopted the same tactics, choosing to act unilaterally or to disregard parts of legislation that he thinks impinges on his authority. For example, rather than go through the difficult and lengthy process of having Congress revise the No Child Left Behind Act, the president simply gave the states waivers from NCLB if they agreed to adopt the administration’s preferred education policies. It is no defense of NCLB to wonder how the president gets the power to make federal education policy, and for that matter state education policy, through the waiver process.

Then again, this is the administration that unilaterally decided to grant some 1,200 waivers from various provisions of Obamacare.

The president has also felt free to repeatedly commit American troops to action without congressional approval. Indeed, not only has the president refused to seek a declaration of war, but in the case of the U.S. bombing of Libya, he didn’t even bother with the congressional notification required under the War Powers Act. The same is true of the president’s dispatch of troops to Uganda.

Democrats in Congress also seem impatient with the normal give and take of the legislative process. Thus, when Senate Republicans used their power to delay consideration of legislation dealing with Chinese currency manipulation, Democrats simply changed the Senate rules to deny Republicans the ability to offer amendments to the legislation. And hardly a week seems to pass without some Democratic proposal to eliminate or restrict the filibuster.

Of course, we should not forget the health-care law was pushed through in the first place with at best minimal concern for congressional rules.

The genius of the American system is that we are a government of laws and not of men. That often makes for a messy and slow process. But it is far better than the alternative. That’s true even when a president believes “we can’t wait.”
