Good evening.  Thank you for being here tonight.

Last Thursday night, I met with you to share information that I had learned just hours earlier that Coach Petrino had not been forthcoming with me and with you about the circumstances of this motorcycle accident.

As you know, I placed Coach Petrino on administrative leave while I reviewed his contract related to the accident.  I assured him and all of you that I would approach this task fairly and thoroughly.  Since that time, I have spoken with key individuals that were involved in the accident and in what occurred afterwards, his passenger on the motorcycle, the individuals who transported him to Fayetteville and to the hospital, and several people who spoke with Coach Petrino before and after the accident.

I reviewed the manner, timing, and extend to which Coach Petrino shared information about the accident, both with men and with others, and to whom he was accountable.  That includes among others, the members of the football program, our supporters, student-athletes, faculty, staff, and alumni of the university, and the public at large.

My review raised several concerns which led me to look beyond the accident itself.  That included the professional and personal relationship he had with his passenger, Jessica Dorrell, the process and circumstances that influenced his decision to hire her as a direct report member of his staff and his candor and behavior of my staff.

Here are the key findings of my review:

Coach Petrino knowingly misled the athletics department and university about the circumstance related to this accident.  He had multiple opportunities over a four day period to be forthcoming with me.  He chose not to.  He treated the news media and the general public in a similar manner.  Coach Petrino’s relationship with Ms. Dorrell gave her an unfair and undisclosed advantage for a position on Coach Petrino’s football staff.  She was one of 159 applicants for the job and Coach Petrino himself participated in the review and selection process without disclosing his relationship with her and that constitutes a conflict of interest under university policy.

During my review of this matter, Coach Petrino informed me that he give a large sum of cash, some $20,000 to Ms. Dorrell.   Coach Petrino, however, failed to disclose this information to me prior to his recommendation to hire her into the football program.

Coach Petrino’s conduct regarding his account of the accident jeopardized the integrity of the football program.  He made a choice to return to practice on Tuesday, to hold a press conference, and to demonstrate his physical resiliency and command of his program, all the time failing to correct his initial report that he was the only person involved in the accident.  He made a conscious decision to speak and mislead the public on Tuesday.  In doing so, he negatively and adversely affected the reputation of the University of Arkansas and our football program.

By itself, Coach Petrino’s consensual relationship with Ms. Dorrell prior to her joining the football staff was not against university policy.  By itself, it is a matter between individuals and their families.  However, in this case, Coach Petrino abused his authority when over the past few weeks, he made a staff decision and personal choices that benefited himself and jeopardized the integrity of the football program.  In short, Coach Petrino engaged in a pattern of misleading and manipulative behavior designed to deceive me and members or the athletics’ staff both before and after the motorcycle accident.

He used athletic department funds to hire for his staff a person whom he had an inappropriate relationship.   He engaged in reckless and unacceptable behavior and put his relationship in the national spotlight.  Coach Petrino’s conduct was contrary to character and responsibilities we demand of our head football coach.  In fact, that is the very language that is included in his contract that he signed as the University of Arkansas.

Consequently, this afternoon, I informed Coach Petrino that his employment with the university was being terminated immediately.

In 1980 when I first sat down and read the book “Free to Choose” I was involved in Ronald Reagan’s campaign for president and excited about the race. Milton Friedman’s books and film series really helped form my conservative views. Take a look at one of my favorite films of his and if you take time to watch these episodes on inflation then you see how Ronald Reagan was able to bring inflation under control in the 1980’s with the help of Paul Volker of the Federal Reserve:

FREE TO CHOOSE: Anatomy of Crisis
Friedman Delancy Street in New York’s lower east side, hardly one of the city’s best known sites, yet what happened in this street nearly 50 years ago continues to effect all of us today. Wall Street. Most of us know what happened here 50 years ago. Inside the Stock Exchange on October 29, 1929, the market collapsed. It came to be known as Black Thursday. The Wall Street crash was followed by the worst depression in American history. That depression has been blamed on the failure of capitalism. It was no such thing but the myth lives on. What really happened was very different.
Although things looked healthy on the surface, business had begun to turn down in mid 1929. The crash intensified the recession. So did continuing bank failures in the south and Midwest. But the recession only became a crisis when these failures spread to New York and in particular to this building, then the headquarters of the Bank of United States. The failure of this bank had far reaching effects and need never have happened.
It was something of a historical accident that this particular bank played the role it did. Why did it fail? It was a perfectly good bank. Banks that were in far worse financial shape had come under difficulties before it did and had, through the cooperation of other banks, been saved. The reason why it wasn’t saved has to do with its rather special character. First its name, Bank of United States, a name that made immigrants believe it was an official governmental bank although in fact it was an ordinary commercial bank. Second its ownership, Jewish, both its name and the character of its ownership which had so much to do with attracting the large number of depositors from the many Jewish businessmen in the city of New York. Both of them also had the effect of alienating other bankers who did not like the special advantage of the name and did not like the character of the ownership. As a result, other banks were all too ready to spread rumors, to help promote an atmosphere in which runs got started on the bank and which it came into difficulty. And they were less then usually willing to cooperate in the efforts that were made to save it.
Only a few blocks away is the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. It was here that the Bank of United States could have been saved. Indeed, the Federal Reserve System had been set up 17 years earlier precisely to prevent the worst consequences of bank failures.
The Federal Reserve Bank of New York, whose directors today meet in this room, devised a plan in cooperation with the superintendent of banking of the State of New York to save the Bank of United States. Their plan called for merging the Bank of United States with several other banks and also providing a guarantee fund to be subscribed to by still other bankers to assure the depositors that the assets of the Bank of United States were safe and sound. The Reserve Bank called meeting after meeting to try to put the plan into effect. It was on again, off again. But finally, after an all night meeting on December 10, 1930, the other bankers, including in particular John Pierpont Morgan, refused to subscribe to the guarantee fund and the plan was off. The next day the Bank of United States closed its doors, never again to open for business. For its depositors who saw their savings tied up and their businesses destroyed, the closing was tragic. Yet when the bank was finally liquidated, in the worst years of the depression, it paid back 92.5 cents on the dollar. Had the other banks cooperated to save it, no one would have lost a penny.
For the other New York banks, they thought closing the Bank of United States would have purely local effects. They were wrong. Partly because it had so many depositors, partly because so many of the depositors were small businessmen, partly because it was the largest bank that had ever been permitted to fail in the United States up to this time, the effects were far reaching. Depositors all over the country were frightened about the safety of their funds and rushed to withdraw them. There were runs. There were failures of banks by the droves. And all the time the Federal Reserve System stood idly by when it had the power and the duty and the responsibility to provide the cash that would have enabled the banks to meet the insistent demands of their depositors without closing their doors.
The way runs on banks can spread and can be stopped is a consequence of the way our bank system works. You may think that when you take some cash to a bank and deposit it, the bank takes that money and sticks it in a vault somewhere to wait until you need it again to turn it back over to you.
Bank teller: Okay, how would you like this? Two tens, one five and five ones. Okay.
Friedman: The bank does no such thing with it. It immediately takes a large part of what you put in and lends it out to somebody else. How do you suppose it earns interest, to pay its expenses, or pay you something for the use of your money? The result is that if all depositors in all the banks tried all at once to convert their deposits into cash, there wouldn’t be anything like enough cash in the banks of the country to meet their demands. In order to prevent such an outcome, in order to cut short a run, it is necessary to have some way either to stop people from asking for it, or to have some additional source from which cash can be obtained. That was intended to be the purpose of the Federal Reserve System. It was to provide the additional cash to meet the demands of the depositors when a run arose.
A classic example of how this system could and did work properly can be found over 2,000 miles from New York near the great Salt Lake in Utah.
In the early 30’s some banks in Salt Lake City and surrounding towns began to get into difficulties. The owners of one them were smart enough to see what had to be done to keep their banks open and courageous enough to do it. When fearful depositors began to clamor to withdraw all their money, one of George Eccles jobs was to brief his cashiers on how to handle the run.

According to the ATP website, McEnroe had the edge in career matches on Jimmy Connors (20–14), Stefan Edberg (7–6), Mats Wilander (7–6), Michael Chang (4–1), Ilie Năstase (4–2), and Pat Cash (3–1). McEnroe was even with Björn Borg (7–7), Andre Agassi (2–2), and Michael Stich (1–1). He trailed against Pete Sampras (0–3), Goran Ivanišević (2–4), Boris Becker (2–8), Guillermo Vilas (5–6), Jim Courier (1–2), and Ivan Lendl (15–21). McEnroe won 12 of the last 14 matches with Connors, beginning with the 1983 Cincinnati tournament. Edberg won the last 5 matches with McEnroe, beginning with the 1989 tournament in Tokyo. McEnroe won 4 of the last 5 matches with Vilas, beginning with the 1981 tournament in Boca Raton, Florida. And Lendl won 11 of the last 12 matches with McEnroe, beginning with the 1985 US Open.

McEnroe, however, played in numerous events, including invitational tournaments, that are not covered by the ATP website. McEnroe won eight of those events and had wins and losses against the players listed in the preceding paragraph that are not reflected on the ATP website.

A new undercover video by conservative filmmaker James O’Keefe shows a man being offered Attorney General Eric Holder’s District of Columbia ballot. The poll worker caught on film tells the cameraman that he doesn’t need to see identification.

The video, released Monday, contrasts clips from the “sting” with quotes from Holder saying that voter fraud is generally “a problem that does not exist.” Holder’s Justice Department has blocked voter ID laws in South Carolina and Texas on grounds that include the supposed superfluity of those laws.

O’Keefe’s Project Veritas has targeted voter fraud in previous videos. One project, released last month, shows undercover filmmakers registering to vote in Minnesota, where the governor has attempted to block a voter ID bill, using the names of NFL quarterbacks Tim Tebow and Tom Brady.

Meanwhile, another undercover video highlighted by Scribe last week shows that some of the most vocal opponents of voter ID laws require that visitors to their Washington D.C. offices present ID at the door. That video looks to undercut claims that ID requirements are excessively burdensome and unwarranted.

It is worth pointing out that the Supreme Court just recently weighed in on voter ID, and found its detractors’ arguments lacking.

The court ruled in 2008 that Indiana’s voter ID law, which the National Conference of State Legislatures says is one of the strictest in the nation, did not constitute an overly-burdensome restriction on voting, and was perfectly justified in the face of potential fraud.

Can Woody Allen pull off a victory at the Oscars? The director’s Midnight in Paris appeared to be an early favorite, only to be ignored by the National Board of Review as well as the New York and Los Angeles film critics, and Woody himself has always kept a distance from the awards race. But the answer is — yes.

There’s a big minus side, for sure. Allen hasn’t had a best picture nominee since 1986’s Hannah and Her Sisters. And even though he’s considered one of America’s greatest auteurs, the directors branch of the Academy last nominated him for 1994’s Bullets Over Broadway. Only the Academy’s bolder writers wing has embraced Allen repeatedly — most recently six years ago for 2005’s Match Point.

To some degree, this is because many believe Allen entered a minor phase between Hannah and Match Point with such unmemorable work as 1998’s Celebrity, 1999’s Sweet and Lowdown and 2001’s The Curse of the Jade Scorpion. But it’s also because he was tarnished by the 1992 scandal when he left companion Mia Farrow for her adopted daughter Soon-Yi Previn. That whole business put Allen in Hollywood’s ever-rotating (though luckily forgiving) Hall of Infamy along with another of this year’s contenders, Roman Polanski (Carnage).

Other possible negatives? Midnight debuted during May’s Cannes International Film Festival, which historically doesn’t launch a lot of Oscar winners; and the film also is a comedy, while the Academy generally prefers drama — enough to make any rational person think his chances are zilch. Right?

Wrong.

Midnight is not only a commercial hit (nearly $140 million worldwide); the Sony Pictures Classics release is also a near lock to be nominated for best picture. Indeed, most Oscar pundits consider it one of four movies certain to get a picture nom, along with The Artist, The Descendants and The Help. Here’s why it could go even further:

First, forget the other awards as a litmus test. Last year, the New York critics and the NBR opted for The Social Network, but The King’s Speech snatched the big bauble. This year, as veteran awards campaigner Tony Angellotti notes, “No pattern has developed.”

Second, Allen to some degree has been rehabilitated in the public eye because of the longevity of his relationship with Soon-Yi, whom he married in 1997 and with whom he has two children.

Third, he might not be campaigning overtly — he has granted only a few brief interviews with major publications (and he’ll be playing the clarinet at UCLA on Dec. 29) — but he has been helped by a perfectly timed two-part American Masters biodoc that aired late November on PBS, along with positive PR done by his sister and producer Letty Aronson, whose sheer normalcy sends a reassuring message about her brother.

Woody’s absence from the Oscars — he’s only recently attended the show once, after 9/11 — should be counterbalanced by the fact he keeps his three Oscars at home, contrary to myth (with 21 noms, he’s won as writer and director of Annie Hall and for writing Hannah), which should mollify slighted voters.

Certainly, the Academy has been willing to forgive worse: Polanski was named best director for 2002’s The Pianist, and voters who can turn a blind eye to his illegal transgressions will overlook Woody’s eccentricities.

More than anything else in Allen’s favor is the film itself. Glowing with romance, glitteringly evocative of the City of Light and nostalgic for a past that takes us away from our current malaise, it’s perfect Academy fodder.

If Sony Classics co-president Michael Barker is right that the Academy these days “doesn’t concern itself with the private lives of artists,” things bode well — because, as any insider will tell you, lots of Academy members simply love Midnight in Paris.

Monday April 9, 2012 on “the show with no name” on 103.7 the buzz, David Bazzel commented concerning Bobby Petrino riding a motorcyle with a 25 year old who was not his wife in plain view of anyone to see. David called that “cocky.”

I have also been amazed to learn that probably the most recognized person in the state would not even try to hide the fact that he was taking Jessica Dorrell for a ride without even wearing a helmet!!!!

Concerning the coverup, Steve Barnes, the moderator of “Arkansas Week” on PBS said, “It is more than passing strange to me…how the state’s highest paid public employee, one of the most high profile individuals in this state, how anybody thought this could be capped.”

Jay Barth, professor of Political Science, Hendrix College, observed, “In his (Petrino’s) own press conference which showed his injuries, he went out of his way to completely contradict, that is where he really got himself into trouble…That press conference was completely out of sink with the state police report. That showed some bizzare judgment on his part.”

Bobby Petrino’s arrogance led him to be reckless in his personal life and that is why you have people observing that Petrino used “bizzare judgment” and acted “cocky.”  

Instead of spending time cheating on his wife he should have spent more time with his wife.   My former pastor Adrian Rogers used to have a sign on his desk which said, “If you don’t want to fall then don’t walk in slippery places.”

How can high profile people avoid adultery? Brandon Barnard, who is a teaching pastor at Fellowship Bible Church here in Little Rock in his message on July 24, 2011 made the point that we should WORK TO ELIMINATE EXPOSURE TO SEXUAL PRESSURES AND INCREASINGLY EMBRACE THE PROMISES OF GOD.

Rick Santorum ends presidential campaign after conceding to Mitt Romney in phone call

After calling Mitt Romney to say he is ending his presidential campaign, Rick Santorum announced the end of his presidential campaign Tuesday during a press conference in Pennsylvania, his home state.

“We will suspend our campaign effective today,” Santorum said surrounded by members of his family in Gettysburg.

Santorum spent the weekend off the campaign trail with his three-year-old daughter, Bella, who suffers from a rare genetic disorder, after she was rushed to the hospital Friday.

“We made a decision over the weekend that, while this presidential race for us is over, for me, and we will suspend our campaign effective today, we are not done fighting,” he said.

Few thought Santorum would make it this far.

The former Pennsylvania senator spent most of 2011 on a grueling and often lonely campaign tour through Iowa. His strenuous underdog campaign was organized by a skeleton staff and run the old fashioned way: By methodically speaking with voters face-to-face, town by town. Candidates like Michele Bachmann, Rick Perry and Herman Cain rose and fell throughout 2011, while Santorum spent the year mostly relegated to the far end of the debate stage. He was a long-dormant volcano due for a surprise eruption.

In the final days before the first Republican caucuses in Iowa–a contest on which Santorum rested his entire strategy–it appeared that his campaign would be laid to rest in the state where it was born. Iowa Republicans did not turn their eyes to the man who had spent more time in their state than any other candidate until the very end, but they ultimately awarded him with a surprise, hair’s-breadth victory–not formally confirmed until weeks after the vote–that helped keep his fledgling campaign afloat into the spring.

The first public whispers of his impending rise came with a CNN poll released three days after Christmas that showed Santorum in third place among likely Iowa caucus-goers, higher than he had ever been before in a public opinion survey. When CNN first announced the poll, Santorum was greeting a small group of supporters at a furniture store in Dubuque. As he weaved between La-Z-Boy recliners and leather couches, a reporter showed Santorum the poll results on her Blackberry. Santorum paused and read the results. While composed, his face revealed an expression of shock mixed with relief.

“I feel very, very good about how things are going and it’s nice to see that reflected in some of the polls,” Santorum said after surveying the good news on the reporter’s phone. “But we have a lot of work to do. A lot of work.”

Before the good polls began to pour in, it was not entirely uncommon for Santorum to hold town halls in which only a handful of supporters bothered to show up. The heart of Santorum’s Iowa support rested in the deep red northwest corner of the state, a solid four-hour drive from Des Moines, where many reporters made their home base. At the time, driving all the way to the South Dakota border to see the candidate, even when no other candidates were in the state, didn’t seem worth the effort.”I’d usually make the drive to see a candidate,” one reporter, comfortably nursing a beer at a Des Moines hotel bar, said in early December. “But it’s Santorum.”

By New Year’s Eve, when a Des Moines Register poll showed Santorum gaining swift momentum, the grim outlook among reporters covering his campaign would change. In the final days before the caucuses, if you arrived on time for an event, you’d be stuck outside in the cold. Every pizza place, coffee shop and diner Santorum visited was jam packed with supporters, media and curiosity seekers, sometimes hours before his arrival.

For the first time in the entire cycle, Romney turned his gaze to Santorum, about whom the Romney campaign didn’t even bother to collect early opposition research, according to a report published much later by Politico. Romney criticized Santorum on the stump during a New Year’s Day rally for spending 16 years in Washington in the House and Senate, one of the first times Romney took time out of his stump speech to discuss Santorum.

“I think it shows that we’re on the move,” Santorum said in response. “And we’re resonating with the people of this state.”

He was right. While an initial count of Iowa votes showed Romney winning by a mere eight votes, the final results–released several weeks later during the South Carolina primaries, a scenario that robbed Santorum of the boost in news coverage that traditionally comes from winning the Iowa caucuses–put Santorum over the top by 34 votes.

“This is a solid win,” Santorum said during a stop in South Carolina two weeks after the Iowa caucuses. “It’s a much stronger win than the win Governor Romney claimed to have.”

Over the next few contests, Santorum took a backseat role to former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who defeated Romney in South Carolina before Romney scored a win in Florida. Dogged by an aggressive series of attack ads run by the Romney campaign in Florida, Gingrich’s momentum slowed after South Carolina, leaving the door open for Santorum to take his position as the alternative candidate to the former Massachusetts governor. Against most predictions, Santorum swept a three-state contest on Feb. 7, winning caucuses in Colorado, Minnesota and a non-binding primary in Missouri.

Santorum was back on the map, and would remain Romney’s greatest challenger for the remainder of the race.

Over the next two months, Santorum would go on to win only a handful of states, as Romney increased his delegate lead. By the time Romney won a majority of votes in the Wisconsin primary on April 3rd, most observers within the party and in the media declared an end to the Republican primary cycle. Romney would take it, they predicted. But with his home state looming just three weeks away, Santorum vowed to press on.

“If this thing was all about D.C. pressure for us to get out, we’d have never even set foot in Iowa,” Santorum spokesman Hogan Gidley told reporters the night Romney swept contests in Wisconsin, Maryland and the District of Columbia. “This thing’s been going on for a long time. We’re not worried at all about the pressure we’re going to get from the outside D.C. world, we’ve had it from the get-go.”

While Santorum voiced confidence that he would win Pennsylvania, where he lost his Senate seat in 2006 to Bob Casey by the record margin of 18 percentage points, state polls leading up to the primary date showed momentum to be on Romney’s side.

“I walked out after the Iowa caucus victory and said ‘game on,'” Santorum said in Gettysburg. “I know a lot of folks are going to write–maybe even those at the White House –‘game over.’ But this game is a long, long, long way from over. We are going to continue to go out there and fight to make sure that we defeat President Barack Obama.”

Josh Morgan enters his third year with the Razorbacks as the director of swimming and diving operations. Morgan’s primary team responsibilities include video editing and handling the day-to-day office duties for head coach Jeff Poppell.Prior to Arkansas, Morgan was an assistant dean of students at The Bolles School in Jacksonville, Fla., where he assisted with the Bolles swim camps for three years under Poppell. He was also a member of the boarding staff and a defensive backs coach for the Bulldogs’ football team.
