Man, 24, found dead in Maumelle hot tub

SPENCER WILLEMS
ARKANSAS DEMOCRAT-GAZETTE

Maumelle police are awaiting preliminary autopsy results in the death of a man whose body was found in a hot tub Monday morning with a Little Rock TV weather forecaster sleeping next to him.
Officers who responded to a “drowning call” about 8:10 a.m. at 16 Village Way found Dexter Williams, 24, of Mountain Pine naked and lying in the fetal position, said Lt. Jim Hansard, Maumelle Police Department spokesman.
Detectives questioned KARK meteorologist Brett Cummins, who was asleep in the hot tub when the resident of the house discovered Williams’ body. Detectives also questioned Christopher Barbour, 36, who lives in the house, which backs up to the driving green at the Country Club of Arkansas, police reports said.
Police have arrested no one, Hansard said.
Williams was “cold to touch” when officers arrived at the residence, police reports said, and his face was “blue and purple” and there was a small ring of blood in the tub.
He was also wearing a silver chained dog collar, police said.
The men’s relationship is part of the investigation, Hansard said.
“That’s something we’re delving into as we speak,” Hansard said. “They’re not family, I can tell you that.”
Officers went to the Maumelle residence on a report that a man had drowned in an outdoor hot tub, Hansard said.
But when they arrived, Barbour came out of his home and told officers the body was “inside” in his bathroom.
After Maumelle Police Chief Sam Williams read Barbour his rights, Barbour told police that Williams, whom he knew only as Dexter, came to his house about 8 Sunday night with Cummins, who Barbour said is a friend.
Barbour told investigators that the three men started to drink and that they started “snorting … illegal narcotics,” according to the reports, though Barbour told police he didn’t know what kind of drugs they were taking.
About 10 p.m., the three men went to Barbour’s hot tub and continued to drink, reports said.
Barbour said he left the hot tub and went to sleep on the couch about an hour later, reports said. He was awakened about 8 a.m. Monday by Cummins’ snores in the bathroom.
Cummins and Williams appeared to have slept in the hot tub, Barbour told officers, and when he entered the bathroom, he noticed the tub had no water, and Cummins was lying on Williams’ head, the reports said.
Shortly after waking Cummins, the two realized that Williams was unresponsive and his face was discolored.
Cummins screamed, fled the bathroom and threw up on the living room floor, reports said.
The meteorologist drove off, the affidavit said, but returned shortly after and gave a statement to detectives.
Tuesday afternoon, investigators were awaiting preliminary autopsy results from the state Crime Laboratory and had not determined a cause of death. Results of the toxicology tests won’t be available immediately, Hansard said.
KARK Manager Mike Vaughn wouldn’t comment on personnel matters but did say Cummins worked the Monday night broadcasts, hours after police had questioned him. He did not work Tuesday’s broadcasts.
Cummins joined KARK in 2001, left for work in Baton Rouge in 2008, and returned to Little Rock later, according to his biography on the KARK website.

Brummett: Obama would defeat Rick Perry (Part 1)

Cato Institute Scholars Analyze the 2010 State of the Union Address

Uploaded by on Jan 28, 2010

Cato Institute scholars address several items in President Obama’s first official State of the Union Address. Scholars include Daniel J. Mitchell, Mark A. Calabria, Neal McCluskey, Michael D. Tanner, John Samples, Jim Harper and Malou Innocent. http://www.cato.org

John Brummett suggests that Rick Perry could not beat President Obama in his re-election attempt in 2012. In Brummett’s article “Laboring over holiday arrows,” September 6, 2011, Arkansas News Bureau, he asserted:

President Obama— You cannot get re-elected in an economy like this unless the Republicans nominate someone more unsettling even than the economy, a possibility.

arrowdownsmallRick Perry, Mitt Romney, Michele Bachmann — The possibilities mentioned above

I will respond in 6 parts. These 6 parts all deal with fundemental economic disagreements that President Obama and Rick Perry disagree on, and I will you determine if the public agrees with Perry or Obama.

These observations come from an article I read by Bradley Gitz on Sept 4, 2011 in the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette:

Much is being made of Texas Gov. (and now GOP frontrunner) Rick Perry’s “Texas Miracle.” Conservatives favorably compare Texas’ economic performance with the rest of the nation under Barack Obama. Liberals claim the “miracle” really isn’t much of a miracle at all and that Perry shouldn’t get the credit even if it is.
Both sides have a point. By any objective standard, Texas has done pretty well in recent years, although upon closer inspection it still has problems (like any state) and it remains unclear how much of the good stuff can be attributed to Perry’s policies.
In clarifying all this, it might help to remember that government is necessary for economic development but, past a certain point, is a potential obstacle to it. The logical corollary is that the marketplace is generally self-correcting, unless presidents (and governors) do dumb things that prevent such corrections. Sound economic policy more often than not means government laying the right foundation for economic growth and then getting out of the way.
So what would such a “right” foundation under present circumstances consist of?
First, limiting the size of the welfare state and government spending in general. Much easier than figuring out the right policies is identifying the wrong ones, foremost among which is government spending more each year than it takes in. At this point we have no choice but to overhaul entitlements, drastically cut discretionary spending and hope we have learned to never go down this road again…

That the Obama administration doesn’t like most of these ideas explains certain things, and also suggests a rather obvious ninth step the voters can take in November of 2012.

Pryor voted for Stimulus earlier but now he is concerned about our deficit

David Pryor praises Obama

_________________________

Thanks to the Arkansas Times Blog and to Arkansas Media Watch for pointing out what Senator Pryor said in his recent visit to Rogers, Arkansas:

Getting the economy on track will require deep cuts to the federal budget and a fairer tax system, Sen. Mark Pryor, D-Ark., said Tuesday.

National defense, Social Security and Medicare and Medicaid will account for more than 60 percent of federal spending in 2012, according to pie charts he displayed. Spending in those areas will have to be reduced along with cuts to other programs if Congress hopes to get the budget under control, he said.

“Everybody’s going to get cut,” Pryor said. “We’ve been living beyond our means.”

The two-term senator spoke at a Rogers Rotary Club luncheon in the John Q. Hammons Center.

Pryor said various tax breaks have created a system in which 45 percent of Americans don’t pay taxes.

“It’s hard to have a fair tax system where only about half the people are paying,” he said.

It is funny to me that Mark Pryor has been one of the biggest spenders in the U.S. Senate history with all his votes with Obama in favor of an almost 800 billion stimulus and a government overall of our healthcare system, but Pryor now wants to talk like a conservative.

I read this letter below from the Arkansas Democrat Gazette on August 13,  2011:

Time to stop insanity

The president has told us for 2 1/2 years that he is focusing “like a laser” on jobs. Well, looks like it’s time to replace this “Jobs Guy” with someone who has actually had some experience running something. We have given him a chance. Yes, he reads a pretty mean TelePrompTer, but his cockamamie Keynesian economic theory that only works in the ivory towers of academia has proved itself wrong again. We have lost a net 2.5 million jobs since his inauguration, and the few jobs the Obama administration has created have cost the American taxpayer about $250,000 each, according to the Congressional Budget Office. And how about his explodingthe national debt? To all the happy parents who have just welcomed their new baby into our world, here is the bad news: Your baby’s share of the national debt is $46,156.05 as of August 2 and is still climbing. Both Republican and Democratic politicians are responsible for our national debt, which now tops $14.3 trillion.

In the recent debate regarding raising the debt ceiling, the only grownups in the room were the Tea Party congressmen who tried to force a vote on a constitutional amendment to require the federal government to balance its budget like every state and city in the land is required to do. In the 2012 election, I suspect the Tea Party of Republicans, independents and Democrats will finally demand that politicians stop this insanity. God help us if they don’t.

RALPH C. PATTERSON Bella Vista

Mark Pryor has supported about every bill that President Obama has pushed. The stimulus was probably the biggest budget busting bill so far. Did that help get our economy going? Not according to Kathy Fettke:

President Obama is urging Congress to raise the $14.3T debt ceiling or else, he warns, the U.S. would be forced to default. Perhaps our representatives need a little lesson on good debt vs. bad debt.

Good debt gives the borrower the potential to create more money. Bad debt gives the borrower something he can’t afford but wants anyway.

In real estate, for example, good debt might be a loan used to purchase an investment property. The borrower acquires an asset that creates income. That income is used to pay off the debt. The borrower then owns an asset free & clear that continues to produce income, long after the original debt is gone.

Bad debt serves a need for instant gratification by borrowing income from the future.

An example of bad debt is getting a loan to purchase a new car. The car is worth less the moment it’s driven off the lot. From day 1, the borrower owes more than the car is worth, and the “asset” doesn’t create monthly income. It becomes a liability, unless it is used as a rental, trucking or any other profitable business use.

Is Obama asking for more good debt or more bad debt?

Politicians are expert wordsmiths who can spin facts into a slick campaigns designed for getting what they want. That’s why President Obama and the money magicians at the Federal Reserve are preaching that more debt would help the economy.

Has their plan worked so far? Let’s take a look:

During the past 5 years, the federal government has borrowed 4.5 trillion dollars to stimulate the economy. That’s a 40% increase in government debt!

Did the stimulus work?

Political spin doctors say it did, claiming that US GDP climbed 1.9% in Q1 of 2011. But how much did that increase cost us?

We spent $4.5 Trillion over 5 years to create $690 Billion in GDP growth.  Doing the math, that means the US will receive 14 cents for every dollar of debt incurred to stimulate the economy.

With losses like this, the “stimulus” plan is really a bad debt deal – one in which borrowing results in more liabilities, not assets. And now our leaders are trying to talk us into more of it.

Just say “NO!” to raising the debt ceiling! It’s not just bad debt, it’s ugly debt.

The cure for bad debt is pretty simple and boring: cut spending and increase income. If you can’t do either, you default.

Borrowing just to keep up with interest payments and avoid default is reckless and only exacerbates the problem. It does not fix it.

Politicians must agree to cut spending. And they must avoid increasing income through taxation. As much as the general population would love to rob the rich, that method doesn’t work. Business owners who get punished for making money will stop producing and hiring.

Instead of taxing productive businesses to extended ugly government debt, offer businesses good debt so they can continue to grow.

Members of our society with solid business plans should be the ones borrowing – not the government.

Arkansas Lt. Governor Mark Darr keeps his word

Mike Masterson wrote a great article this morning in the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette and I wanted to share it with you.

Darr keeps his word

By Mike Masterson

LITTLE ROCK — I respect a politician who actually keeps his promises. Way too many politicos I’ve known over the years have specialized in meaningless lip movement and deceptive, self-serving tactics.

So imagine the width of my smile to see Lt. Gov. Mark Darr live up to his campaign promise by joining in the lawsuit against the wildly unpopular Obamacare law. The public relations name for this unsustainable, politicized mess of a law is the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Wow, “protection” and “affordable” in one title. Such illusion ought to earn some promotional wag a bonus.

Acting in his capacity as an individual, our Republican lieutenant governor filed an amicus brief in Missouri Lt. Gov. Pete Kinder’s lawsuit that echoes the sentiments of most Arkansans.

Twenty-one states thus far have filed a similar brief with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eight Circuit in support of Kinder in his constitutional challenge to the individual mandate provision of the Democrat’s health-care law. Separately, more than 150 elected executive and legislative officials of states within the Eighth Circuit have filed a brief asking the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals to reach a decision regarding the substantive constitutional issue and not delay resolving the case on procedural grounds.

Darr did his homework and understands just how unacceptable and unsustainable this health-care law truly is. “According to the Arkansas Department of Human Services there are currently 26 percent or 771,000 Arkansans on Medicaid,” he said the other day in a press release. “Once the health care law goes into effect in 2014 over 35 percent or 1,021,000 will qualify for Medicaid. The federal government will pay for 100 percent of the Medicaid expansion in our state through 2016, and then the amount will gradually be reduced to 90 percent by 2020. That means in ten years, the cost to the state will be about $200 million a year. This is unsustainable.

“As a small business owner,” Darr (a Northwest Arkansas pizza mogul) continued, “I fully understand the ramifications this law will have to small businesses across our state. I have had the opportunity over the last year and a half to speak with small business owners and major employers concerning this issue. They have been and still remain steadfastly opposed to the healthcare reform act.”

Kinder said he welcomed what he called “very significant and welcome” support for his challenge, including some kind words for Darr, commending him “for his willingness to step forward and lead on this crucial issue. [Darr] recognizes the individual mandate is an overreach of the federal government’s power into the lives of the citizens of Arkansas. I’m proud to stand with him as he joins this fight on behalf of the people of his state.”

Darr said he hopes the Eighth Circuit will move quickly to reach a just decision. Don’t most of us.

Arkansas Media Watch accuses Reagan of increasing spending

Did Ronald Reagan explode federal spending?

On the Arkansas Times Blog on July 21, 2011, the link by Arkansas Media Watch to an article that was critical of Ronald Wilson Reagan (who by the way I named my son Wilson after).

In the article “Arkansas Democrat Gazette editors make fun of Ronald Reagan” by arkansasmediawatch on July 21, 2011 you will read:

Today’s Arkansas Democrat Gazette editorial is a lighthearted satire on Reagan deficit spending. It opens with the following quote from Saint Reagan himself:

“Governments don’t reduce deficits by raising taxes on the people; governments reduce deficits by controlling spending and stimulating new wealth.”

Excellent joke – I never thought Paul Greenberg had a sense of humor. Reagan of course never balanced a budget, on the contrary he was responsible for record deficits as high as 6% of GDP, almost tripling the national debt. Neither did he control spending – he presided over a 69% increase in federal spending, much of which went to the military.

The truth is very different. After adjusting for inflation, federal spending grew less than 1% a year during the 8 years Reagan was in office. Take a look at the video clip below:

Take a look at this article below. To Fix the Budget, Bring Back Reagan…or Even Clinton

Posted by Daniel J. Mitchell

President Obama unveiled his fiscal year 2012 budget today, and there’s good news and bad news. The good news is that there’s no major initiative such as the so-called stimulus scheme or the government-run healthcare proposal. The bad news, though, is that government is far too big and Obama’s budget does nothing to address this problem.

But perhaps the folks on Capitol Hill will be more responsible and actually try to save America from becoming a big-government, European-style welfare state. The solution may not be easy, but it is simple. Lawmakers merely need to restrain the growth of government spending so that it grows slower than the private economy.

Actual spending cuts would be the best option, of course, but limiting the growth of spending is all that’s needed to slowly shrink the burden of government spending relative to gross domestic product.

Fortunately, we have two role models from recent history that show it is possible to control the federal budget. This video from the Center for Freedom and Prosperity uses data from the Historical Tables of the Budget to demonstrate the fiscal policy achievements of both Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton.

Some people will want to argue about who gets credit for the good fiscal policy of the 1980s and 1990s.

Bill Clinton’s performance, for instance, may not have been so impressive if he had succeeded in pushing through his version of government-run healthcare or if he didn’t have to deal with a Republican Congress after the 1994 elections. But that’s a debate for partisans. All that matters is that the burden of government spending fell during Bill Clinton’s reign, and that was good for the budget and good for the economy. And there’s no question he did a much better job than George W. Bush.

Indeed, a major theme in this new video is that the past 10 years have been a fiscal disaster. Both Bush and Obama have dramatically boosted the burden of government spending — largely because of rapid increases in domestic spending.

This is one of the reasons why the economy is weak. For further information, this video looks at the theoretical case for small government and this video examines the empirical evidence against big government.

Another problem is that many people in Washington are fixated on deficits and debt, but that’s akin to focusing on symptoms and ignoring the underlying disease. To elaborate, this video explains that America’s fiscal problem is too much spending rather than too much debt.

Last but not least, this video reviews the theory and evidence for the “Rahn Curve,” which is the notion that there is a growth-maximizing level of government outlays. The bad news is that government already is far too big in the United States. This is undermining prosperity and reducing competitiveness.
