Kate Middleton and Prince William: Marriage made in Heaven? (Part 41)

photo

Bridesmaids and page boys

Philippa Middleton arrives at Westminster Abbey with the bridesmaids and page boys ahead of the wedding service between Prince William and Catherine Middleton, 29 April 2011

Prince William and Kate moved in together about a year ago. In this clip above the commentator suggested that maybe Prince Charles and Princess Diana would not have divorced if they had lived together before marriage. Actually Diana was a virgin, and it was Charles’ uncle (Louis Mountbatten) that gave him the advice that he should seek to marry a virgin.

I really do wish Kate and William success in their marriage. I hope they truly are committed to each other, and if they are then the result will be a marriage that lasts their whole lifetime. Nevertheless, I do not think it is best to live together before marriage like they did, and I writing this series to help couples see how best to prepare for marriage.

If unmarried, we are to remain sexually pure. That means more than abstaining from vaginal intercourse. It involves abstaining from fondling genitals, oral sex, and physical pleasuring that leads to orgasm. The biblical word is porneia, which is often translated “fornication,” but involves a wide range of sexual practices. It bears repeating that the question to ask is not “How far can I go?” but “What standard of purity honors God?” Such a standard is not what we will view on TV or at the movies or read in magazines or on blogs. Yet it is clearly what God desires and has determined as best for our well-being. (Sexual Intimacy in Marriage” by William Cutrer, MD and Sandra Glahn)

Why does this issue of cohabitation always get so much attention? There are at least three reasons.  First, it’s something that is connected to values for people, so debates about cohabitation are not just about cohabitation, they are also about religious beliefs and other values.  Those are important issues, but my observations here are focused only on the science.  Second, younger people tend to believe that cohabitation lowers their risks in marriage, so reports that it’s not associated with benefits, or even associated with risk, have gotten a lot of attention.  People are interested in this.  Third, cohabitation is important societally because it’s increasingly the context for childbearing and rearing, and cohabiting relationships are much more fragile than marriages. That makes it an important subject in our national discourse. (Scott Stanley – Research Professor, University of Denver)

Chip Ingram – How to Diffuse Conflict in Your Marriage (pt 5)

Recently I’ve shared with you several brief video messages about how to resolve conflict. This is such an essential issue that so many of us would rather avoid! The truth is that unresolved conflict creates stress and often results in unhealthy and damaging sin patterns. This quick message will give you some practical ways to approach and diffuse conflict that can help break the cycle. Benefits of Attending a Weekend to Remember

Arnold Schwarzenegger rides alone on Memorial Day

US Magazine reported today:

PIC: Arnold Schwarzenegger Rides Solo Memorial Day Weekend

1306786423_arnold-schwarzenegger-290.jpgRiding solo!

Arnold Schwarzenegger took a ride on his motorcycle Monday afternoon in Malibu, Calif. The 63-year-old wore a black helmet and leather jacket as he drove through town.

Meanwhile, the former governor’s estranged wife, Maria Shriver, tweeted her appreciation for veterans and their families on Memorial Day. “This weekend, I’m thinking of all who gave their life, and all the families who lost a loved one, in service to this great country,” she wrote. “You have our deepest gratitude and respect. God bless.”

The 55-year-old even shared some words of wisdom with her followers. “My daughter once gave me a great Plato quote that said, ‘Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle.’ I love that. So true.”

She added: “We don’t know what is going on inside of most people. On this Memorial Day, when so many are grieving in obscurity or silence, let’s keep that in mind.”

Schwarzenegger and Shriver’s oldest son, Patrick, enjoyed some quality time at the family’s Malibu house on Saturday, according to his Twitter page. On Monday afternoon, the 17-year-old wrote he was “going to the big Apple — New York City!”

In addition to Patrick, Shriver and Schwarzenegger have three children together: Katherine, 21, Christina, 19 and Christopher, 13

I have written many times about Arnold Schwarzenegger before. Here are just a few of the times:1. President Reagan having a photo taken with Arnold Schwarzenegger at the Republican National Convention in Dallas, Texas. 8/23/84.2.Here is a video clip of Arnold Schwarzenegger using an Airlight
Broom
as a prop for “cleaning house” in the California Recall
Election as seen on CNN, ABC, CBS, NBC, ect in 2003. The
Airlight Broom is manufactured by Little Rock Broom Works.3. I heard John Fund of the Wall Street Journal speak in Little Rock on April 27, 2011 and in his speech he mentioned the struggle that Arnold Schwarzenegger had with the envirnomentalists in California. I took time to repeat a lot of the facts about that in my blog post that day.4. At that same luncheon on April 27th that I mentioned earlier, one subject that John Fund brought up was the red tape that Arnold Schwarzenegger had to deal with in California. I wrote about that too.5. St. James Palace has confirmed  that Kate Middleton and Prince William – or, more officially, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge – will be visiting California from July 8-10 this summer. Former Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is expected to greet the Royals as they touch down.6. Which is better for setting up a business: California or Texas? Arnold Schwarzenegger is mentioned in this post too.7. Arnold Schwarzenegger is fond of quoting Milton Friedman but he rejected fiscal conservative idea to cut spending.8. Pictures of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver through the years. Video clip of them at Ronald Reagan’s funeral.

9. I wrote a post on American Exceptionalism and put in a video clip of Arnold Schwarzenegger doing the introduction to an episode of “Free to Choose.”

Top Ten List of greatest soccer players: E. Hatcher’s list v. W. Hatcher’s list (Part 1)

This is a fun series that my son Wilson and I are starting today about the greatest soccer players of all time. Today we will discuss the list below and then give our 10th best player and later we will give #9.

Wilson: 10 David Beckham- There is no one who can curve the ball quite as good as Beckham. He has led the English team for 3 World Cups and he has been a very successful player.

Best 20 goals of David Beckham (Part 4-Final)

Everette: My 10th best player is Brian McBride and I think this video clip says it all.

Brian McBride – US soccer legend

Below is a list of the best 10 players. I do not agree totally with the list.

Best Soccer (Football) Players of All Time

The Top Ten

1Pele (Edson Arantes do Nascimento)

“This is a century old question that will impact future generations, some say that he won everything with the best team, but in that same thought, remember this is a team game. Pele was terror to any goalie, he only presence in the area shuke fear in their very core. But beyond that a player goes beyond the field, sets standards of living for other players and fans, the only one to positively do this is not but Edson Arantes Do Nascimento, any more questions check his numbers.

“Just look at his goals on You Tube, he could whack the from a mile out or dribble them into the back of the net, he was the most complete player the game has ever seen and unlike modern players didn’t have the comfort of referees protection… opposing players tried to kick him off the park. I remember seeing him in the early 70’s and frankly it was a time to really watch football rather than spoilt brats thinking they are a lot better than they really are.

“When you see this guy play, it’s like everything else around you doesn’t matter. The ringing phone doesn’t disturb you. The chatter of the people makes no impact on you at all. It’s just him, him and his game. Pele wasn’t just another amazing football player, he was an excellent one, a prodigy, incomparable, and probably, someone this world will never see again in the next 100 years. He simply is, a football legend.

2Cristiano Ronaldo

“he is the perfect player, A complete package who can drible, juggle, freekick, deadly crosses, long range efforts, never ending stamina, great accuracy with both feets, serious pace, his hight which he can achieve when he jumps for the ball, perfect body shape, unforgetble free kicks and last but not the least he is from portugal and unarguabley he is the player they have ever produced and might not produce same again, his coutry of origin is not that famous as for pele, maradona, messi, ronaldhino and zidane but still he is now among them which means his will and hungar for goals and win is greater then any of em! I love his style!

“I just had to! he is one of the best, he scores goal, he set up goals, good at taking free kicks ^^ he is the most skillful player ever lived! he made a good decision to leave man utd because now he can go up against he’s arch rival lionel messi which he lost to a couple of time but he never gave up thats exactly the pasion you want for football! he’s the best and you all know it but just wont admit it…

“Crisitiano Ronaldo Is amazing, His an inspiration. He inspires me to play soccer and to live my dreams. ” Im living a dream I never want to wake up from” Thanks Ronaldo youve shown me that anyone can be anything & live up there dreams you just gotta make it happen & Believe. Love you Cristiano! Good luck in the future (:

3Ronaldo (Ronaldo Luiz Nazario da Lima)“ronaldo is the greatest striker ever played football with that speed an skill he’s the best ever may i call him the phonomonen, the king , the number 9,the best ever rooooooooooooooooooonaldo“Ronaldo is the best footballplayer I have seen!Thestar_lol“how is he not number 1? he’s the maddest player ever, SCREW PELEdecorulez97More comments about Ronaldo (Ronaldo Luiz Nazario da Lima)
4Diego Maradona

“maradona is much better then ronaldo, cristiano ronaldo and much better than Pele he’s so dumb I dot even know him wow that is sad right. Diego Maradona may score a goal with his hand but thats how smart he’s he always want’s to win and never wants to lose like some other. you should put him number 1. He can dribble all the field without losing the ball that must be cool. Ronaldo and Cristiano Ronaldo can’t do that. I don’t know about Pele couse again I don’t know him. Everybody thinks he’s a bad player only because they are jelous. He’s not sneaky because it is not his foult that the revery didn’t look. What would you say if he didn’t score with his hand. If that never happend you would say he’s far far the best player in the world.

“no one can move the ball with such pin-point accuracy as Maradona can (and still can at the age of 50)… Pele’s goal score is misleading. Half of his goal scores came from unofficial matches, including state and suburban competitions, practice matches, and meaningless club friendlies. He recorded these goals unofficially himself, how petty! This explains why his record of the number of matches he played was much higher than fellow Brazilian players at the time. He could win no world cup in the 50s and 60s if he was born in Argentina.

“Diego Maradonna was the greatest and had skill no other footballer could even dream of. He was better than Pele.

Some of the names on this list though are an absolute joke like Beckham rated at 11 and Michael Owen being rated so highly. Wayne Rooney and Alan Shearer are way better footballers than both Owen and Beckham who shouldn’t even be anywhere near the list. Especially Beckham the most over rated player in the history of the game.

5Zinedine Zidane

“Put France back onto the worldwide football map.

His playing skills were simply marvelous, amazing, punctuated in my opinion by his incredible performance against Brazil in the 2006 FIFA World Cup. At that point of his career he was more Brazilian than any Brazilian at the time.

Always present when needed, he led France to back-to-back major championships in 1998 and 2002.
Came back in 2006 and almost won it for France in overtime with another amazing headshot (his specialty in the Finals) blocked by a certain Gianluigi Buffon, at the top of his craft.

Zidane’s name should be well ahead of the two Ronaldo’s. Cristiano is a great player but he hasn’t won anyhting worthy now and probably won’t.

“Zindane is higher than Ronaldhino.
Ronaldhino cant play big games. He can never use his tricks when he play. The fake u-tube video(gitting the post several times) does not make him great.
Pele …dont know about hi. Looking at the videos, i dont think he can be compared to Zidane.
Football was different then. It was not competetive.
Pele is better than general but not great because he did not face great opposition and he didnt have magic touches like zidane or other players have these days. he was just a mere shooter like Trazeguet….he got lucky. But zico is better in Brazilian player.

“not the most amazing but the best, the coolest, one of the most passionate, the best playmaker, the greatest player ever!
i’m not french, he’s never played for my team, I am totally neutral and rarely wrong! 😀

6Ronaldinho

“He is the greatest, a perfect dribbler, free-kick taker, Guys don’t forget the free-kick against England on the quarter finals on 2002 world cup. He was great in Barcelona too, where he remarkably gained popularity and love of millions of fans, I really don’t think any other player has such a dribbling ability. When I see his videos of Barcelona and Bralizian days of him I feel so happy to see his style of play, Two times World Player of the year consecutively is not a joke. He is the god for me and all the other DIHNO’s fans.

“RONALDINHO IS ONE OF THE BEST SOCCER PLAYERS EVER HE IS EVEN BETTER THAN MARADONA. HE HAS GOOD DRIBBLING ABILITIES. HAVE U SEEN THE GAME HE PLAYED AGAINST ENGLAND WOW. THAT WAS ONE OF THE BEST GAMESHE PLAYED HE ALWAYS KNOWS WHAT TO DO HE NEVER USES THE SAME TRICKS HE HAS BLESSED FEET. THATS WHO I WANT TO BE LIKE WHEN I BECOME A PRO HOLLAR AT ME IF U THINK I CAN MAKE IT

“no one can tosh him he is a ninja he is di only complete footballer in di world only man I see use is back to make a true pass is that amazing marodana could not class with him di reason why he use drugs to play di game I would not have marodana in my 5,000 thousand list

7Lio Messi

“What! is this possible? Messi down here? I frankly think you guys should throw away those Black and White televisions and get a better one. What are you even telling me? That Cristiano Ronaldo Ronaldo Zidane Zico Jari Litmanen(No way) and Gheorghe Hagi(Who is this guy anyway) are better than Messi? Even Maradona can’t compare himself with Messi, Almost all the things Maradona did, he did them when he was high but Messi doing his stuffs with clear eyes, That guy is almost the greatest and he will be very soon. This is how the real list should be:
1. Pele(No doubt about that)
2. Ronaldinho (The most gifted feet in football ever)
3. Messi (The magnetic touch and heading towards the 2nd position soon)
4. Xavi (The 360 degrees turn master)
5. Cruyff (First apprentice of the total football). Then maybe
6. Maradona (The King of stamina)

“He is a fantastic team player (unlike C. Ronaldo)
He can dribble like Maradona.
He has scored more goals in one season in La Liga than Ronaldo (the better one)
He never seems to dive (he realises he has better impact on the game if he stays on his feet)
When he is fouled he rarely flies off the handle. (Unlike Maradona)
He would never (and has never) claimed to be the best player ever over others.
He generally keeps quiet and lets his football do the talking. (Unlike Pele)
Admittedly, I am biased and am too young to have a fully informed viewpoint. I am CERTAIN Messi is better than CR7, to suggest otherwise is dellusional…

“How can C. Ronaldo be a better player than Messi. Messi is a better dribbler, better passer and he has an exellent accuracy(when hitting on the target), an accuracy which C. Ronaldo will never have. The only thing that C. Ronaldo can do better then Messi is run faster and hit stronger, but thats nothing if you don’t have accuracy(from 10 shots only 1 is on the target). He is just hitting the ball(by luck) until one of the will go straight to the goals. So what I whant is Messi is a better player than C. Ronaldo. I hope most of the people will agree with me.

8Zico“his free kick could kill any goalkeeper…Mpafoklaniaris“He is a coach of FENERBAHÇE…Fenerbahçe was played quarter final match with chelsea in CL.Fenerbahçe will be most valuable football clup with Arthur ZİCOWE LOVE WHİTE PELE ‘ZİCO’MAWENSY“he is the best turkey footballer over i’m love it

he’s the best; )

9Jari Litmanen“See some old footage him playing… Simply the best!“He is the greatest Finnish player in history! he is very good and reminds of the prime time of Soccer!“Unbelievable first touch on ball and he is always aware what is happening in game. He has eyes on his back. Definitely a big team player. He is master of passes and he can shoot accurately too.
10Gheorghe Hagi

“truly one of the greatest players what the world had, only a miracle had held back Romania to reach the World Cup 1994 Semi Finals with him

MatrixGuy

“The BEST player in Turkey and one of the best in the world.. Turkey and Galatasaray will never forget him!..

LEO75

“The current romanian football needs NOW a football player like Hagi! (or more players better than Ghorghe Hagi, like me:) )

President Obama visited Joplin to see Tornado damage

The Washington Post reported this morning:

Week after deadly tornado nearly levels Joplin, Obama consoles Mo. city and pledges help

By Associated Press, Updated: Monday, May 30, 3:15 AM

JOPLIN, Mo. — Exactly a week after Joplin was nearly leveled by the deadliest tornado to strike the U.S in decades, President Barack Obama visited the Missouri city to offer hope to survivors and promises of help.

Obama came face to face Sunday with the legions of homeless, consoling the community as it remembered the more than 130 people killed in the storm. The memorial service erupted in cheers when Obama said, “I promise you your country will be there with you every single step of the way,” a pledge he extended to all parts of the nation raked by violent storms this season.

The service punctuated a day of remembrance as authorities pressed on with the task of identifying the victims and volunteers combed through the apocalyptic landscape of wrecked neighborhoods where nothing was left whole.

Hundreds stood in Joplin’s Cunningham Park for a moment of silence at 5:41 p.m. — to mark the first report of the tornado — surrounded by wrecked cars and twisted poles. Many in the crowd wore white T-shirts emblazoned, “Joplin’s Heart Will Sing Again.”

“We will rebuild Joplin,” City Manager Mark Rohr told the crowd. “You have my word on it.”

Obama made the same vow hours earlier during the service, telling locals: “We’re not going to stop ‘til Joplin’s back on its feet.”

The Joplin tornado was the worst to hit the United States in decades. Hundreds were injured, and 39 people remained unaccounted for as of late Sunday. There are four more people whom family members have reported as deceased, but those deaths haven’t been officially confirmed.

Air Force One flew over a massive swath of brown — a land of flattened houses and stripped trees — on its approach to Joplin. On the ground, the destruction was even more stark and complete. Obama confronted painful sights at every turn and said nothing in his life measured up to what he saw this day.

Yet he spoke, too, of redemptive moments, the stoicism of the community and tales of plain luck. He told a story of a man he talked to who had taken a chicken pot pie out of the oven, heard the storm was coming, hid in a closet and “came out without a scratch.” Obama celebrated the spirit of volunteers who have flocked to Joplin to help, the pickup truck owners who ferried people to the hospital and the citizens who lined up for hours to donate blood to people they don’t know.

“You’ve demonstrated a simple truth,” he told the service, “that amid heartbreak and tragedy no one is a stranger. Everybody is a brother. Everybody is a sister. We can all love one another.”

The crowd of hundreds at the service reflected a community in the midst of rebuilding: people in shorts and baseball caps, and plenty of babies who occasionally burst out crying. The president talked over the screeching until a baby was hurried out by the mother.

Obama got a notably warm reception in this conservative part of Missouri. His remarks were tailored for a religious service, with quotes from scripture, references to the love that binds people to each other, and comments on the essential goodness of humanity. The stories of the storm lead us to “put aside our petty grievances,” the president said. “There are heroes all around us, all the time. So, in the wake of this tragedy, let us live up to their example: to make each day count.”

Known for his cool, even-tempered demeanor, Obama offered his own brand of comforting: eloquent words, plentiful handshakes, some hugs, pats on the heads of children, offers of “God bless you.” Not for him the raw emotion Americans saw in his predecessors George W. Bush or Bill Clinton.

Before the service, Obama’s motorcade pulled into a neighborhood where downed trees cleaved open houses, roofs were stripped or blown off, cars were cratered and splintered wood was everywhere. He saw nothing intact, but rather small domestic sights — a view into a room with a TV still in place, a recliner sitting amid rubble, a washer-dryer standing next to a decimated house. American flags were planted here and there in the mess.

“Sorry for your loss,” Obama told an anguished woman, hugging her twice as they talked. Another woman told him that her uncle lives up the road — he survived but his house did not. “Tell your uncle we’re praying for him,” the president said.

To those working at the scene, the president said: “We appreciate everything you guys are doing. God bless you.” One volunteer told him that people were coming in from other states to help in any way they could.

“This is not just your tragedy,” Obama said. “This is a national tragedy, and that means there will be a national response.” He said: “We are going to be here long after the cameras leave.”

Maybe the USA will get the 2022 World Cup since Qatar may be eliminated

The USA came in 2nd for the 2022 World Cup, and hopefully we now have a chance to re-bid for it. We have more stadiums than anyone and would create more excitement than any other country.

Here are the earlier results from Wikipedia:

U.S. Soccer first said in February 2007 that it would put forth a bid for the 2018 World Cup.[78] On 28 January 2009, U.S. Soccer then announced that it would submit bids for both the 2018 and 2022 Cups.[79] David Downs, president of Univision Sports, was executive director of the bid. Other committee members included president of U.S. Soccer Sunil Gulati, U.S. Soccer chief executive officer Dan Flynn, Major League Soccer Commissioner Don Garber, and Phil Murphy, the former national finance chairman for the Democratic National Committee.[80] The vice president of FIFA, Jack Warner, who is also the president of CONCACAF, originally said he would try to bring the World Cup back to the CONCACAF region.[81]However, Warner also stated that he preferred the USSF change their plans to make a bid for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.[82]

In April 2009, the bid committee identified 70 stadia in 50 communities as possible venues for the tournament, with 58 confirming their interest.[83][84] The list of stadia was trimmed two months later to 45 in 37 cites,[85] and then in August 2009 to 32 stadia in 27 cites.[86] In January 2010, 18 cities and 21 stadia were selected for the final bid. The cities were Atlanta,BaltimoreBostonDallasDenverHoustonIndianapolisKansas CityLos AngelesMiamiNashvilleNew YorkPhiladelphiaPhoenixSan DiegoSeattleTampa, and Washington DC. The cities with multiple qualifying stadiums were Los Angeles, Seattle, Dallas and Washington, D.C. With several large American football stadia, the 21 venues was to have an average capacity of 77,000 and none seat fewer than 65,000. Seven of the stadia seat at least 80,000.[87] Two proposed stadia would be used by Major League Soccer during the summer.[citation needed]

In October 2010 the United States withdrew from the 2018 bid process, to focus solely on the 2022 competition.[88

This is a possibility because of the recent events mentioned below. Reuters reported today:

ZURICH (Reuters) – Accusations that Qatar bought the right to stage the 2022 World Cup deepened the corruption crisis at the heart of FIFA on Monday just as an apparently unscathed Sepp Blatter prepared to claim another term as president.

World soccer’s governing body has been beset by accusations of bribery involving members of its inner circle of executive committee members ever since the vote to decide the hosts of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups took place in Zurich last December.

On Monday, the allegation that Qatar paid members for their votes sprang from the top, as a leaked email from the organization’s general secretary Jerome Valcke making the claim was confirmed as genuine.

It came just two days before FIFA delegates are due to vote in the presidential election, with the 75-year-old Swiss Blatter now the only candidate and poised to extend his 13-year spell at the head of the world’s richest and most popular sport.

The email, shown to Reuters by FIFA vice-president Jack Warner, referred to Qatar’s Mohamed bin Hammam, who was at that time a candidate to stand against Blatter in the presidential election.

“For MBH, I never understood why he was running,” Warner quoted the email from Valcke as saying. “If really he thought he had a chance or just being an extreme way to express how much he does not like anymore JSB (Blatter).

“Or he thought you can buy FIFA as they bought the WC (World Cup).”

Qatar denied the allegation while Bin Hammam said he had no idea why Valcke had made such a claim, which followed a steady drip of accusations about senior FIFA executives.

In total, 10 of the 24 members of the executive committee have been subject to allegations of corruption in the last year and yet Blatter appears to have been untouched by the controversy and calls for reform.

Blatter was cleared by a FIFA ethics committee on Sunday, while Bin Hammam, who had earlier pulled out of the election campaign, and Warner were provisionally suspended.

Blatter will now run unopposed in Wednesday’s vote and can expect to win a fourth term at the head of an organization he has run since 1998, during which time it has become wealthy on the back of TV rights and sponsorship.

Blatter, who will address a news conference at 1600 GMT, has recently sought to distance himself from his executive committee, whose members are elected by their respective confederations rather than from within FIFA itself.

“I have no influence and I cannot take any responsibility,” he said during the election campaign. “They have their own character and own conscience.”

FORMER CHALLENGES

Blatter has faced down challenges to his position before, notably in 2002 when secretary general Michel Zen-Ruffinen claimed his 1998 election victory was based on bribery and corruption.

Blatter subsequently won re-election and Zen-Ruffinen was soon out of a job.

Five years later, he was elected unopposed for a third term. While the last six months have been the most turbulent of his reign, he is on course to get the fourth term he said during the campaign would be his last.

The recent problems stem from last year’s World Cup votes, when Russia saw off opposition from England and joint-bids from Netherlands-Belgium and Spain-Portugal for 2018 and Qatar got the 2022 nod over Australia, Japan, South Korea and the United States.

On Monday, an Australian senator demanded a refund from FIFA on the $48.8 million the country spent on its bid for the 2022 World Cup.

The fear now for Qatar would be any sustained calls for the vote to be re-run.

Bin Hammam, who will not be allowed to attend the FIFA congress because of his suspension, dismissed the allegation that he had handed over money in exchange for votes.

“You would have to ask Jerome Valcke what he was thinking,” he told the BBC. “If I was paying money from Qatar you would also have to ask the 13 people who voted for Qatar.”

Valcke told reporters in Zurich on Monday he did send the email but that Warner had only published selected parts of it.

Earlier this month, Qatar’s World Cup bid team strongly denied allegations, made by a British member of parliament, that it had paid two executive committee members to vote for the Gulf nation.

Questioned by reporters on Sunday, Valcke agreed that FIFA was facing “a watershed moment,” drawing comparisons with the International Olympic Committee’s crisis when IOC delegates were found guilty of taking bribes for votes to award the 2002 Winter Games to Salt Lake City.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Jim Tressel, who guided Ohio State to its first national title in 34 years, resigned Monday amid NCAA violations from a tattoo-parlor scandal that sullied the image of one of the country’s top football programs.

“After meeting with university officials, we agreed that it is in the best interest of Ohio State that I resign as head football coach,” Tressel said in a statement released by the university. “The appreciation that (wife) Ellen and I have for the Buckeye Nation is immeasurable.”

Luke Fickell will be the coach for the 2011 season. He already had been selected to be the interim head coach while Tressel served a five-game suspension.

Ohio State spokesman Jim Lynch said he was unaware of any buyout or severance package. He added that Tressel had returned from vacation Sunday night and met with athletic director Gene Smith, who then met with staff. Tressel typed his resignation and submitted it to Smith, he said.

The resignation was first reported by The Columbus Dispatch.

Clearly, the turmoil had been building. The resignation comes nearly three months after Ohio State called a news conference to announce it has suspended Tressel for two games — later increasing the ban to five games to coincide with the players’ punishment — and fined him $250,000 for knowing his players had received improper benefits from a local tattoo-parlor owner. The school said at the time it was “very surprised and disappointed” in Tressel. Yet, the school still managed to crack jokes.

Asked if he considered firing Tressel, Ohio State President E. Gordon Gee said then: “No, are you kidding? Let me just be very clear: I’m just hopeful the coach doesn’t dismiss me.”

Tressel’s downfall came with public and media pressure mounting on Ohio State, its board of trustees, Gee and Smith.

“We look forward to refocusing the football program on doing what we do best — representing this extraordinary university and its values on the field, in the classroom, and in life,” Smith said in a statement Monday. “We look forward to supporting Luke Fickell in his role as our football coach. We have full confidence in his ability to lead our football program.”

Tressel and Ohio State were to go before the NCAA’s infractions committee Aug. 12 to answer questions about the player violations and why Tressel did not report them. He denied knowledge of improper benefits to players until confronted by investigators with emails that showed he had known since April 2010.

After several NCAA violations by him or his players over the years, Tressel’s problems deepened after learning several players received cash or discounted tattoos. Contrary to NCAA bylaws — and his own contract — Tressel received emails from a former player about this and did not tell his athletic director, university president, compliance or legal departments or the NCAA for more than nine months.

The 58-year-old Tressel had a record of 106-22-0 at Ohio State. He led the Buckeyes to eight Bowl Championship Series games in his 10 years. Combined with a 135-57-2 record in 15 years at Youngstown State, where he won four Division I-AA national championships, Tressel’s career mark was 241-79-2.

The author of two books about faith and integrity, he remains a scapegoat to many and a hypocrite to others. Even though he has many backers, a rising chorus of detractors had stepped forward during the ongoing NCAA investigation. There were also questions about his players and their friends and family members receiving special deals on used cars from two Columbus dealers.

But at one time his image was that of an honest, religious man who never said or did anything without thinking it through first. His nickname was “The Senator” for never having a hair out of place, praising opponents and seldom giving a clear answer to even the simplest of questions.

He’d gotten into trouble with the NCAA even before coming to Ohio State. He was the coach at Youngstown State when it received scholarship and recruiting restrictions for violations involving star quarterback Ray Isaacs.

Still, Andy Geiger, then Ohio State’s athletic director, favored Tressel over Minnesota coach and former Buckeyes linebacker Glen Mason for the job after John Cooper was fired in January 2001.

Cooper was let go ostensibly because the program lost direction, with several off-the-field problems. But perhaps more damaging was his 2-10-1 record against rival Michigan and 3-8 mark in bowl games.

Introduced at an Ohio State basketball game in 2001, Tressel vowed that fans would “be proud of our young people, in the classroom, in the community, and most especially in 310 days in Ann Arbor, Mich., on the football field.”

Tressel’s first team went just 7-5, losing the Outback Bowl, but upset 11th-ranked Michigan 26-20. But in his second year, with a team led by freshman tailback Maurice Clarett, the Buckeyes won everything. They went 14-0, winning seven games by seven or fewer points. Ranked No. 2, they took on top-ranked Miami in the Fiesta Bowl for the BCS national title. In the second overtime, Clarett bulled over the middle for a touchdown and the Buckeyes held to clinch their first national title since 1968. After the game, Tressel held aloft the crystal football.

The following summer, Clarett reported that a used car he had borrowed from a local dealer was broken into and that he had been hit by thousands of dollars in losses. Clarett’s call to police came from Tressel’s office. Clarett admitted he had made up the break-in call and later took a plea deal. But the NCAA began looking into Clarett and the team. Soon after, he was declared ineligible. He would never play another college game.

The Buckeyes went 11-2 in 2003 and followed that with an 8-4 mark in Tressel’s fourth season. There had been a stream of players getting in trouble, but in December 2004 backup quarterback Troy Smith was suspended for the bowl game and the 2005 regular-season opener for accepting $500 from a booster.

Smith would go on to win the 2006 Heisman Trophy, leading the Buckeyes to a 12-0 record and a season-long No. 1 ranking. Despite being a heavy favorite in the national title game, the Buckeyes were routed by Florida 41-14.

A year later, Tressel guided the Buckeyes to the national championship game but lost again — 38-24 to underdog LSU.

The Buckeyes were national contenders each of Tressel’s next three seasons, with off-the-field problems mixed in. In 2005 offensive coordinator coach Jim Bollman was reprimanded for trying to arrange for a car and a loan for a recruit. Several other Buckeyes players were arrested on a variety of charges.

But the Buckeyes continued to win and play in rich bowl games. That was enough until his latest brush with the NCAA.

Ohio State announced in December during what would be a 12-1 season and a top-five national ranking that it would suggest to the NCAA that five players — most of them top players, including star quarterback Terrelle Pryor — would sit out the first five games of the 2011 season after they admitted they had received improper benefits.

They had sold memorabilia such as championship rings, uniforms and in the case of Pryor, a Fiesta Bowl sportsmanship award, for cash or discounted tattoos at a Columbus parlor. The violations came to light in a U.S. Attorney investigation into drug trafficking involving the owner of the parlor, Edward Rife. When federal agents raided his home and the parlor, they came across hundreds of signed Ohio State items.

A 10-day investigation by Ohio State resulted in the self-imposed five-game penalties and the players repaying the money they gained to charity. The NCAA allowed the players to play in the Sugar Bowl, a move many observers said showed the national governing body put the money interests of the bowl ahead of routine punishment in other similar cases.

Tressel had learned that Pryor and wide receiver DeVier Posey were involved in the memorabilia deals when he received an email from lawyer Christopher Cicero, a former Ohio State walk-on and letterman in the 1980s, back in April 2010.

It was not until Ohio State began to work on an appeal of the five-game suspensions for the players that investigators came across the emails between Cicero and Tressel. The coach then finally admitted that he knew of what has been called Tattoo-Gate by local media.

At a March 8 news conference, Tressel said he chose not to tell anyone because he was bound by confidentiality to not expose the federal drug trafficking investigation. Yet he had forwarded the very first email he received from Cicero to Ted Sarniak, a businessman and “mentor” of Pryor. Sarniak knew about the NCAA violations — and of Tressel’s coverup — for almost nine months before Smith and Gee found out.

“As I think back to what I could have done differently … I’ve learned that I probably needed to go to the top legal counsel person at the university and get some help,” Tressel said.

He said he hadn’t given a thought to what the rest of the country thought of Ohio State’s program and that he was not beating himself up over the violation.

“I don’t think less of myself at this moment,” he said. “I felt at the time as if I was doing the right thing for the safety of young people.”

My sons Hunter and Wilson had a lively discussion about Coach Tressel before the Sugar Bowl game between Arkansas and Ohio State. Wilson was angry about Ohio State allowing the five punished players to play against the hogs. Wilson thought Ohio State would win because of that and Hunter thought the hogs would win anyway.

After the game, Hunter commented that our mistakes in the first half cost the hogs the game and not the 5 players from Ohio State. Hunter went on to say,”He was a very intelligent coach but he made mistakes, and  he did the right thing and resigned.”

Wilson noted, “Though Tressel was a very talented coach, some mistakes from his bad decisions played throughout his career. I have been very angry toward him, but I got to give it to him for resigning.”
