Auburn’s Pat Dye at Little Rock Touchdown Club on Oct 3, 2011

We have had some great speakers at the Little Rock Touchdown Club and Auburn’s Pat Dye has to be included in that list.

10/3/2011 at 3:22pm

The last time former Auburn head football coach Pat Dye addressed the Little Rock Touchdown Club, he spoke about a wonderful meeting he’d had with Alabama native and author Harper Lee (“To Kill a Mockingbird”). Monday, Miss Lee would have been blushing at some of the saltiness in Dye’s entertaining luncheon speech, marking his third visit to the club in its eight-year history.

You can hear the full-on version at the Touchdown Club’s website. Maybe the comment about Paul Finebaum, when Dye wasn’t miked or at the dais, made the video. We’ll just touch on the key points he made about No. 15 Auburn’s game coming up Saturday with now No. 10 Arkansas.

Dye believes Arkansas has a good team. Or an outstanding one. Take your pick, because he said both, just like a coach would in speaking about an upcoming opponent. He definitely believes Arkansas has a great offense led by the genius of head coach Bobby Petrino, and it’s complemented by a good defense and kicking game.

He warns that Auburn has a great kicking game, which the Tiger program has been noted for at least since the glory days of Shug Jordan. As for Auburn’s offense and defense, well, Dye can’t give either one good marks. But somehow the Tigers are 4-1 and 2-0 in the SEC West in what was supposed to be a rebuilding year under Coach Gene Chizik.

Dye said last year’s Auburn excelled because of two players: quarterback Cam Newton was “Superman” on offense and tackle Nick Fairley was an unblockable force on defense. Fairley and Newton took Auburn from being just an average team to the 14-0 BCS national champion.

Newton and Fairley now are playing in the NFL.

Auburn is getting contributions from a number of players this year, including Arkansans Michael Dyer, a sophomore running back from Little Rock Christian, and Kiehl Frazier, a freshman quarterback from Shiloh Christian, contributing.

“Dyer carried it 41 times against South Carolina, and Auburn doesn’t beat South Carolina without the plays Kiehl Frazier made on third down near midfield,” Dye said.

Senior Barrett Trotter is the regular Auburn quarterback, but Frazier in spare doses is giving offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn (another Arkansas native) more of the type of signal caller he needs to run the Tigers’ offense — a good runner who can pass. Frazier’s runs helped Auburn keep key moving in the Tigers’ 16-13 upset at Columbia on Saturday.

Dye said he hopes Auburn can give Arkansas a competitive game “so you fans won’t leave early and go to your parties.”

Dye looked over the list of this fall’s previous Touchdown Club speakers — specifically noting former Alabama coach Gene Stallings. He said coaches like Stallings like to talk about the time they played and coached as being college football’s grand ol’ days, but disagreed with the assessment.

“Coach Stallings likes to live in the dark ages,” Dye said laughing. “We’re living in the golden age right now … There’s never been as much interest in college football across the United States as there is today.”

Dye says he’s on a panel with Stallings and former coaches who vote in the weekly Legends Poll. Dye said he’s told Stallings he couldn’t coach defense today like he did 15 years ago.

“All you had to defend was the I formation,” Dye said he told Stallings. “Now, there are a jillion formations.”

“He said, ‘They’re not teaching ’em how to tackle.’ I said, ‘Hell, they’re just tyring to teach them where to line up.'”

And that’s what Auburn’s Ghizik and defensive coordinator Ted Roof are dealing with down on The Plains with a young defense loaded with top prep prospects who are learning their way. Soon enough, they’ll be very good. But don’t read much into Saturday’s win at South Carolina. Dye said an Auburn fan was excitedly pointed to the play of the defense against South Carolina, but Dye interjected, “That wasn’t much of an offense they were playing.”

The whole sentence was spicier than that, but we’ll let you hear for yourself on the video.

“We don’t have a junior in our front four,” Dye said. “They’re playing with a lot of energy, but they’re just a bunch of guys who are wet behind the ears.”

Dye, who left coaching after the 1992 season, was pushed away somewhat from his continued involvement with Auburn’s program by former Tigers coach Tommy Tuberville, the Camden native who left the Tigers’ job after a 5-7 season in 2008 and is now at Texas Tech. Since Chizik’s arrival, he’s been a fixture again around Auburn football.

Late in a troubled 2003 season at Auburn, the then-school president and then-athletic director took a clandestine trip to Louisville to entice Bobby Petrino, who had been Auburn’s offensive coordinator in 2002, to replace Tuberville. Had news of that jet trip not leaked, history on The Plains (and Fayetteville too, for that matter) might have changed. Word did lead, though, right before Tuberville’s Tigers beat Alabama, and then Auburn went 13-0 the next year and finished the bowl season No. 2 behind Southern Cal.

Monday, it appeared Dye is a big fan of Petrino’s.

“He came from a great football family. All of his life, since he was wearing diapers, he’s been around football. There is none better than Bobby Petrino as far as an offensive football mind,” Dye said to reporters after the luncheon.

But, with Arkansas surrendering 628 yards last Saturday in Petrino’s fourth year at Fayetteville, can Petrino match the defensive side of the ball with his offensive acumen, I asked Dye.

“If he can recruit the kind of players they are getting at LSU and Alabama, and Florida, yes,” he said.

Remember what Dye said earlier about defending “a jillion” formations and just getting players to line up right.

During his luncheon, he gave a ringing endorsement of football in the South that would have you convinced the recruitable players are available for many teams beyond LSU, Alabama and Florida, and it’s why the SEC has won the last five national championships.

But, if anybody from outside the SEC can win the BCS Championship Game this year, it could be the Big Ten’s Wisconsin, Dye said.

He rattled off the pluses for the Badgers, including a line that averages 6-foot-5 and 320 pounds, two outstanding receivers and three good running backs. “And, you know what they have that Alabama and LSU don’t,” he asked the large crowd at the Embassy Suites ball room.

“That have a great quarterback.” His name is Russell Wilson, and he started out at N.C. State before having to quit there because N.C. State wouldn’t let him also play professional baseball.

“And, you know, he almost came to Auburn,” Dye added.

The Tigers’ program got lucky beyond dreams last year, bringing in a rare one-and-done from junior college, Dye admitted. “It will be 20 or 30 years before another comes around like Cam Newton,” the College Football Hall of Famer said.

Then, Dye stood for a picture with Camden Fairview wide receiver Dominique Reed, honored Monday as the club’s high school player of the week for his five-catch, 290-yard effort two weeks ago against Hot Springs Lakeside.

Dye, who had a great playing career at Georgia before going into coaching and becoming the man who signed Bo Jackson — calling him the best athlete ever — looked up at the 6-foot-3 Reed and said, “I always liked to sign players who were a lot taller than me.”

“Tip Tuesday” Advice to Gene Simmons (Part 13)

Gene Simmons and Shannon Tweed

Gene, 61, and Shannon, 54, have been together for 27 years and have two children, Nicholas, 22, and Sophie, 19.

The ‘Rock and Roll All Nite’ hitmaker has previously made his views on marriage very clear, saying in 2007: “The problem with marriage is somebody else has a right to say how you lead your life. Not even your mother has that right, and she gave you life itself. Why would you ever give anybody else that right?”

___________________________________

Gene Simmons really does not understand what marriage is all about. Take a look at what God intended for marriage:

Reclaiming the Heart of Marriage

God calls us to a renewed life, but it still takes patience, sacrifice, discipline and compassion.

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth…”

These words are as familiar to us as “Once upon a time …”— and, unfortunately, sometimes as insignificant. Many—including some Christians—consider the Bible’s creation to be a children’s story or a fairy tale. We rush past the foundation and go straight to the punch line—the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Yet, the beginning of human history holds far more significance for our lives today than many realize.

Jesus thought it important. When grilled about the relations between husbands and wives—specifically divorce—Christ subverted the petty selfishness and encrusted legalism that had sprung up around marriage by returning to this ancient truth:

“Haven’t you read … that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female’ and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’? So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together let man not separate” (Matthew 19:4-6, NIV).

But Jesus’ questioners persisted:

“Why then,” they asked, “did Moses command that a man give his wife a certificate of divorce and send her away?” (Matthew 19:7, NIV)

His reply illuminates that old creation story with a power and life. He said:

“Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because your hearts were hard. But it was not this way in the beginning” (Matthew 19:8, NIV)

Jesus wasn’t making a casual statement about the fallen world. He was directing us to meditate on God’s design for humanity in the beginning—the design that was twisted and shattered when Adam and Eve sinned in the Garden.

God said:

Let us make man in our image, in our likeness …

So God created man in his own image,

in the image of God he created him;

Male and female he created them (Genesis 1:26,27, NIV)

How often have husbands and wives considered the truth that each bears the image and likeness of God? More important, how many realize they reflect God’s image and likeness at least as much, if not more in their one-flesh union than each does separately?

By pointing us back to the beginning, Jesus wanted us to understand this vital revelation: God created humans for intimate unions that model the intimate union shared by members of the Triune God. He said, “Let US make man in OUR image and likeness.” God’s great gift to His children was the ability to share in the divine love existing before time.

Perhaps this is not the character of your marriage. Your one-flesh union may have been ravaged by infidelity, pornography use, illness, bitterness, selfishness, neglect, or abuse. You may love your spouse but also feel, at times, like strangling him. Separation may seem like the only available option. Or, maybe the kids are gone and you find an empty marriage to match your empty house.

Life is hard. Some have called it a “vale of tears.” When Adam and Eve sinned, they endured “painful toil” working the cursed ground of “thorns and thistles” (Genesis 3:17-19, NIV). Our hearts have also suffered the devastation of the Fall. We daily battle the thorns and thistles—pride, bitterness, lust, greed, envy—that threaten to choke our fragile stirrings of love.

This makes marriage difficult. We often see our spouse as the enemy, rather than an extension of ourselves. Our one-flesh union may be lacking all emotional, mental, and spiritual aspects and be relegated to quick couplings born of frustration or desperation. And we wonder where God is in all of this.

After directing us back to the beginning, Jesus provided a way for us to return to God’s design for our lives and marriages. He finished His atonement for our sins on the cross and promised a new life in Him. The Bible teaches that if we have been baptized into His death, we are also baptized into His new life (Romans 6:3-4, NIV). This is our hope and His promise. The life God gives is one restored, redeemed, and transformed.

This is not some hyper-spiritualized pipe dream. God calls us to a renewed life, but it still takes patience, sacrifice, discipline, and compassion. But God is with us every step of the way, working through His Spirit to restore everything that has been damaged. Listen for God’s call to this transformed life and hold tight to the promise of the One who said, “Behold, I am making all things new.”

Jenna Fischer’s baby is here

A pregnant Jenna Fischer arrives at the premiere “A Little Help” at Sony Pictures …

I feel like I know Jenna. Actually I have known her uncle Jim for years. He used to live in Memphis and we actually knew it other because we attended the same hardware conventions every year. My booth  has been near his booth for about a dozen shows in a row. Many times we have been talking and I have heard lots of stories through the years that his sister tells him about Jenna.

Jenna and husband Lee Kirk are proud parents to son Weston Lee, who was born on September 24.

“Mom and baby are doing great,” the rep noted.

“The Office” writers incorporated Jenna’s real-life pregnancy into the show this season, as Pam is currently pregnant with her second child with Dunder Mifflin husband Jim (John Krasinski).

Jenna first announced her pregnancy back in May and in July, she confirmed the couple was expecting a boy during a visit to “The Tonight Show.”

It appears her role on “The Office” ignited a bit of baby fever for Jenna, who said working with a pair of twin babies, who play her & Jim’s daughter Cece on the show, warmed her heart.

“They got the cutest [babies] in town to play our baby,” Jenna told The LA Times’ Brand X blog in September 2010. “Pretty much any time we get to see baby Cece is great.”

Does living together work? Rogen and Miller finally tie knot

Seth Rogen and Lauren Miller have married in California.

The couple — who started dating in 2004 — tied the knot in a Jewish ceremony officiated by a female rabbi at Kunde Estate in Sonoma in front of friends including Jonah Hill, Paul Rudd, The Office’s Craig Robinson, Knocked Up director Judd Apatow and his wife Leslie Mann.

Speaking about the three-day celebration, a source told Us Weekly magazine: “The wedding was more laughs than anything else. Every other line was a joke and the crowd couldn’t contain their laughter. It was non-stop fun!”

Rogen has previously revealed he had no idea what to expect from the ceremony as he had left all of the planning up to Miller because she has always wanted to get married.

He said: “I’m around for it. My girlfriend has a very vested interest. I think she’s been planning this for years. I’m the last piece of the puzzle. I’m excited. It’s going to be lovely.”

While the wedding was a romantic affair the proposal wasn’t as Rogen, 29, was so nervous after he bought the engagement ring he popped the question almost immediately after buying it, while Miller was still getting dressed.

_______________

Cohabitation is just like marriage, but without “the piece of paper.” Cohabitation typically doesn’t bring the benefits (in physical health, wealth, and emotional well being) that marriage does. In terms of these benefits cohabitants in the United States more closely resemble singles than married couples. This is due, in part, to the fact that cohabitants tend not to be as committed as married couples, and they’re more oriented toward their own personal autonomy and less to the well being of their partner. (From: Smartmarriages® Subject: TOP 10 MYTHS OF MARRIAGE- Popenoe/Piece of Paper schedule – 2/13/02)

• Living together without the benefit of marriage can be harmful for the children since the relationship is not a committed one and therefore lacks stability and is more prone to break-up. For the children of such unions when the couple breaks up there may as well be a divorce. The lack of official papers does nothing to make a split easier on the kids. Alex Honnold says he will quit eventually, but I wonder

The ascent of Alex Honnold

Uploaded by on Oct 2, 2011

Mountain climber Alex Honnold seems to defy gravity, scaling sheer, steep rock faces with no rope and apparently no fear. Lara Logan reports.

_______________________

Last night in his 60 minute interview Alex Honnold said he would quit mountain climbing eventually. However, I think it would be hard to quit. Look at the life of John Bachar. Did he quit? He was in his fifties still climbing.

On July 5, the climbing world lost one of its greatest icons: John Bachar. While climbing alone at the Dike Wall near Mammoth Lakes, California, Bachar fell to the ground, though the circumstances of the fall remain unclear. Bachar died later at Mammoth Hospital on Sunday afternoon. The free-spirited Californian was a symbol of American free climbing and free soloing, with a strong traditional climbing ethic. Bold, blonde-haired, surfer-esque and ever-charismatic Bachar will be remembered for many of his earlier achievements, including his daring 1980s free solos of Yosemite routes like Outer Limits (5.10c) (Climbing Magazine Issue no. 84), New Dimensions (5.11a), Butterfingers (5.11a), Butterballs (5.11c), as well as the sport routes Enterprise (5.12b), in the Owens River Gorge, and The Gift (5.12c), at Red Rocks (Climbing Magazine Issue no. 192).

On a rope, the Bachar-Yerian(5.11c R/X), a route he climbed on Medlicott Dome with Dave Yerian in 1981, still remains as one of Tuolumne Meadows’ most notorious routes, with only 13 bolts — all placed on the lead and ground-up — in 500 exposed feet of climbing. Along with fellow free soloist Peter Croft in 1986, the pair made the El Capitan and Half Dome link-up in only 14 hours, a feat that to this day is still considered incredible.John was 52 years old leaves behind his son Tyrus.Pete Thomas of the Los Angeles Times has written an informative obituary here.

Supertopo.com has started a thread to offer your condolences: John Bachar – In memory of a great man 1957 – 2009

The following is courtesy of JohnBachar.com

In every sport there are men, myths and legends. In the world of rock climbing and free soloing without a rope, there is only one name that fits all three: John Bachar.

Controversial and uncompromising, Bachar pushed the boundaries of what was possible, and at the same raised the world’s standards.

A true rock star as a teenager, Bachar soloed 5.11 when 5.12 did not yet exist. He bouldered harder and climbed stronger than anyone. He refused to compromise his strong traditional style “ground up” ethics along the way.John Long says, “There has never been anyone like John Bachar, and there never will be again.”Peter Croft says, “Yosemite was THE place, Bachar was THE guy, that makes him more than just a climber.”

Rob Robinson says, “John Bachar was unquestionably the greatest climber of our generation.”

“Music Monday”:Coldplay’s best songs of all time (Part 4)

Dave Hogan/ Getty ImagesDave Hogan/ Getty Images

This is “Music Monday” and I always look at a band with some of their best music. I am currently looking at Coldplay’s best songs. Here are a few followed by another person’s preference:

For the 17th best Coldplay song of all-time, Hunter picks “42.” He notes, “You thought you might be a ghost! love the lyrics. He’s definitely searching spiriturally in this song.”

Coldplay – 42 Live

Coldplay perform on the french television channel W9.

I wrote this article a couple of years ago:

The Spiritual Search for the Afterlife
Russ Breimeier rightly noted that it seems that Coldplay is “on the verge of identifying a great Truth” and their latest CD is very provocative. Many songs mention God and other Biblical themes such as dealing with death, and the afterlife and meaning in life and the shortness of life. The song “42” states,
Those who are dead are not dead
They’re just living my head
And since I fell for that spell
I am living there as well
Oh…Time is so short and I’m sure
There must be something more
____________
This is the same journey that Solomon went on 3000 years ago in the Book of Ecclesiastes. The Christian Scholar Ravi Zacharias noted, “The key to understanding the Book of Ecclesiastes is the term UNDER THE SUN — What that literally means is you lock God out of a closed system and you are left with only this world of Time plus Chance plus matter.” Most people are not in the position of Solomon was in because he had a great deal of resources and could see if getting true lasting satisfaction was possible without God in the picture and Solomon went about this experiment.  He found out these hard cold facts.
Three things that do not bring lasting Satisfaction
Satisfaction does not come through (#1) learning more, or (#2)  putting more effort in your work or  (#3)seeking pleasure.

Read Solomon’s words for yourself.
Ecclesiastes 1:16- 2:11
16-17 I said to myself, “I know more and I’m wiser than anyone before me in Jerusalem. I’ve stockpiled wisdom and knowledge.” What I’ve finally concluded is that so-called wisdom and knowledge are mindless and witless—nothing but spitting into the wind.18 Much learning earns you much trouble.
The more you know, the more you hurt.
Chapter 2
1-3 I said to myself, “Let’s go for it—experiment with pleasure, have a good time!” But there was nothing to it, nothing but smoke. What do I think of the fun-filled life? Insane! Inane!
My verdict on the pursuit of happiness? Who needs it?
With the help of a bottle of wine
and all the wisdom I could muster,
I tried my level best
to penetrate the absurdity of life.
I wanted to get a handle on anything useful we mortals might do
during the years we spend on this earth.
4-8 Oh, I did great things: built houses,
planted vineyards,
designed gardens and parks
and planted a variety of fruit trees in them,
made pools of water
to irrigate the groves of trees.
I bought slaves, male and female,
who had children, giving me even more slaves;
then I acquired large herds and flocks,
larger than any before me in Jerusalem.
I piled up silver and gold,
loot from kings and kingdoms.
I gathered a chorus of singers to entertain me with song,
and—most exquisite of all pleasures—
voluptuous maidens for my bed.
9-10 Oh, how I prospered! I left all my predecessors in Jerusalem far behind, left them behind in the dust. What’s more, I kept a clear head through it all. Everything I wanted I took—I never said no to myself. I gave in to every impulse, held back nothing. I sucked the marrow of pleasure out of every task—my reward to myself for a hard day’s work!

11 Then I took a good look at everything I’d done, looked at all the sweat and hard work. But when I looked, I saw nothing but smoke. Smoke and spitting into the wind. There was nothing to any of it. Nothing.
____________
No band has worked harder than Coldplay (creating 4 of the greatest cds in pop history) and Chris Martin is a very educated man who has achieved the storybook life in many areas. Why has his writing turning more towards spiritual matters now? Could he be traveling down the same road that Solomon was going 3000 years ago?

Clinton’s spin on Tea Party is misguided

Before the 2010 elections Clinton came back to Little Rock and said the Democrats would have a tough time winning because the voters had a memory problem. What is his spin on the Tea Party? Max Brantley of the Arkansas Times noted:

A friend sent a link to Politico coverage of a panel discussion and unscripted remarks by Bill ClintonFriday that were part of three days of events marking the 20th anniversary of his announcement of a run for the White House. He responds forcefully here to those who’d credit Republicans for some of his ideas.

I liked what he had to say about the Republican/Tea Party controlling message of the moment:

“I’m telling you this to point out that we need a coherent narrative,” he said. “The No. 1 rule of effective politics, especially if the people you’re running against have a simple narrative — that government is always the problem, there is no such thing as a good tax or a bad tax cut, there’s no such thing as a good program or a bad program cut, no such thing as a good regulation or a bad deregulation — if you’re going to fight that, your counter has to be rooted in the lives of other people.”

His speech included an attack on the tea party governing philosophy.

“We need to understand that one of the things that tends to tilt things toward the Republicans’ anti-government narrative is our country was born out of a suspicion of government,” Clinton said. “King George’s government was not accountable to us. That’s what the Boston tea party was about. When the tea party started out, at least they were against unaccountable behavior from top to bottom. Then it morphed into something different. If you want to go against that grain, you’ve got to tell people you understand it’s a privilege and a responsibility to spend their tax money, but there’s some things we have to do together. And that’s what the purpose of government is, to do the things that we have to do together that we can’t do on our own.”

“If we can make that choice credible,” he added, “then our candidates — starting with the president — and our principles will be fine.”

Liberal Rage Won’t Stop the Tea Party’s Rise

by John Samples

This article appeared in The Philadelphia Inquirer on August 9, 2011.

The tea-party contingent in Congress drove the Republican leadership to bargain harder than it otherwise would have on last week’s debt-ceiling deal. Liberals have rightly concluded that the tea party is changing political outcomes. Their response has been to equate tea-party members with terrorists.

Vice President Biden recently told House Democrats that tea-party Republicans had “acted like terrorists.” And a New York Times columnist claimed that “Tea Party Republicans have waged jihad on the American people.” Many people on the left no doubt take their cues from the vice president and the Times, so we should expect more such venomous rhetoric castigating the movement as an enemy of America.

Ironically, the movement being portrayed this way takes its name from an iconic event in American history. The Boston Tea Party of 1773 helped establish the principle of “no taxation without representation.” And the members of the current tea-party movement clearly believe in the American system of representative government. They worked to change Congress through the election of 2010, and now they expect their efforts to bear fruit in the form of new policies.

Even if their anger is understandable, liberals should be ashamed of their over-the-top anti-tea party rhetoric.

“Tea Party Patriots” — the name of one tea-party organization — is closer to the truth. Far from being enemies of America, these people believe deeply in the nation’s history, promise, and Constitution.

Differing visions
The liberal anger toward the tea party is justified in one sense. The tea-party movement’s vision of America is distinct from the reality of the welfare state the country has built since 1936. So a powerful tea party is understandably disturbing to liberals — even if their recent campaign of vilification against it is reprehensible.

But is the tea-party movement really all that powerful? The budget deal, after all, hardly restrained the growth of spending over the next year, when the government will still run a deficit in excess of $1 trillion. Even with the restraint prescribed by last week’s deal over the long term, the federal government will still be spending $4.25 trillion a year. The deal may lower federal spending, but it clearly will not bring about a substantially smaller government.

The evident rage among liberals, however, may have more to do with the battles to come than it does with the battle they’ve just lost (or won). We stand at the beginning of a long struggle. For the next few years — and maybe many more — our politics will be occupied by the same kind of fights over spending, deficits, and taxes.

These battles will be about more than just money. They reflect two different ideas of what the U.S. government should be. On one side is the tea party’s vision. On the other is the welfare state of Franklin Roosevelt, Lyndon Johnson, and President Obama, which taxes and spends more and more in pursuit of security and fairness for its citizens.

As recently as 2008, the big-government vision seemed poised to win the day. Then came the tea-party mobilization of 2009, which led to the election outcome of 2010.

Here to stay
That victory was remarkable but, in a way, unconvincing. After all, protest movements have emerged, affected elections, and then disappeared before. The Reform Party of Ross Perot comes to mind. Last year, it was far from certain that the tea party would be more than a memory by the summer of 2011.

More by John Samples

Even before the election of 2010, tea-party leaders were concerned that electing fiscally responsible members of Congress would not be enough to save the nation from financial ruin. They knew they had to follow up their victory with oversight to ensure that new members would remember who had elected them and why. The recent pressure on House Speaker John Boehner from tea-party representatives reflected that strategic choice.

Political scientists tell us that to bring fundamental change to the nation, political movements must become permanent organizations. The civil rights movement accomplished such a transformation. Will the tea party also become a permanent part of our politics?

It’s too soon to say, of course, but the debt-ceiling deal suggests the answer may be yes. In fact, the Republican Party might be the permanent organization the tea party becomes.

Even if their anger is understandable, liberals should be ashamed of their over-the-top anti-tea party rhetoric. The tea party could become a lasting force in American politics — one that slowly ends the long era that began with the New Deal. Though it’s often criticized as rooted in the past, the tea party may be a harbinger of the future.

Marriage done right:Jerry and Sally Johnson

I have known Jerry and Sally Johnson since 1983 and they are some great people. Here is an article in today’s Arkansas Democrat-Gazette about them.

RIGHT TIME RIGHT PLACE

God, Uncle Sam in sync when plotting their future

By KIMBERLY DISHONGH SPECIAL TO THE DEMOCRAT-GAZETTE

LITTLE ROCK — Jerry Johnson joined the Army hoping for a stint in Europe, but he was sent to Fort Sill, Okla.

“I was really disappointed because out of about 400 soldiers everyone went to Europe but nine and I was one of the nine not going,” he says. “And then the Lord showed me why I wasn’t going.”

A couple of months after arriving at Fort Sill in the spring of 1957, he went with his roommate to First Baptist Church in Lawton, Okla. Two rows in front of them sat a young lady in a big straw hat.

His roommate knew that young lady, Sally Sullivan, the church’s singles’ director and pastor’s secretary, and he introduced her to Jerry after the service.

“She’s 5-foot-10 and she had on a black sack dress and a black and white straw hat – I thought she was striking,” says Jerry, who is 6-foot-6. “But it wasn’t like love at first sight.”

Jerry began riding with his friend to church and to the activities Sally scheduled for singles.

“Every Sunday we would have 20 to 25 go to lunch and then on Tuesday night we would get together to visit prospects for the church and Wednesday nights and then Sunday nights we would have fellowships after church where we would have games and desserts and that type of thing.”

“On Saturdays, the group often did something fun, like picnicking in the mountains,” he says.

He and Sally were dating others and weren’t interested in each other then. But by December 1958, Jerry’s feelings had changed.

“I felt like I would really like to date Sally, so I prayed about it and I finally went and asked her if she would be interested in dating. We’d been very close friends and we knew a lot about each other’s families and so forth,” he says. “I felt that she’s such a wonderful young woman – beautiful inside and out – that I would be blessed to date her.”

Sally was surprised. They decided to think and pray about it over Christmas and decide when he was back from visiting his family in Knoxville, Tenn.

They had agreed they could still date other people until they made up their minds about dating each other, but his mind was only on her.

“All I did was talk about her. I was on leave and I was excited about being home, but I couldn’t think about anything else but getting back to her,” he says. “The first thing I did when I got off the bus was walk about three-quarters of a mile to her apartment. I knocked on the door and hopefully she would be glad to see me returning from my leave and it so happened that she had a date that night.”

“I was glad to see you though!” Sally interjects.

Not long after that they had their first date – a picnic in the mountains with friends from the singles group.

“We had a fun day, laughing and joking and kidding with each other,” he recalls “We really realized we were making a connection that day.”

Jerry proposed to Sally at midnight on April 16, after a party with the singles group.

“Being the gentleman I was supposed to be I thought, ‘Well, I better call her dad and ask him first,’” he says. “I called him, I think at midnight, and he said, ‘Yes, you may marry my daughter,’ and I think he never quite forgave me for calling him and waking him up.”

They were married in the sanctuary of First Baptist Church in Lawton on Aug. 28, 1959, before more than 600 guests.

Jerry worked for a while in management at J.C. Penney, but in 1968, he felt called to the ministry. He and Sally worked side by side on the staff at First Baptist in Lawton for eight years. In 1976, they moved to Little Rock, where he became family life minister and youth pastor at First Baptist Church. He developed the recreation program at the church and led the charge to build the family wellness and recreation center there.

The Johnsons have three children, Christie Erwin and Brad Johnson, both of Little Rock, and Jerry Johnson of Rancho Mirage, Calif. They have 15 grandchildren.

Jerry’s disappointment about not being sent to Europe quickly faded after Sally agreed to date him. Years later, he got the chance to lead several mission trips and conference tours to Europe and elsewhere in the world – and Sally got to go with him.

“It was,” he says, “just a blessing delayed.”

After our first date:

She says: “I was convinced that the Lord was in this and that we needed to pursue it and I was very hopeful that it was going to be the right thing.” He says: “I saw the way we interacted in a different realm than we had been that the Lord was working it out that we were going to become a couple.”

The first time I met my future in-laws:

She says: “I was very impressed with their humility and with their love for Jerry. He was their only child and I was one of nine.” He says: “They were just down-to-earth people. They had grown up with not a lot materially, but I was impressed with their family togetherness. And being an only child I was also a little shocked by the number of people.”

On our wedding day:

She says: I was nervous, excited … I’m excited now, just thinking about it. I knew that he was the one and I was just so so happy that we were going to be together for the rest of our lives.” He says: “I felt so blessed to be facing that day and knowing what God had provided for me.”If you have an interesting how-we-met story or know someone who does, please call (501) 378-3496 or e-mail:

Documentary on Coldplay (Part 2)

The best band in the world. Below I have linked some articles I have earlier about the search for meaning in life the band seems to involved in.

Coldplay-012811-0001.jpg

Chris Martin, Jonny Buckland, Guy Berryman, and Will Champion formed Coldplay in 1996 while going to University in London. The young band quickly established themselves in the tough music market in London as they finished their degrees. After passing around their demo for a few years, Coldplay finally landed an independent record deal. With only a little bit of funding, Coldplay managed to turn out EP Brothers and Sisters in only a few days.

Coldplay eventually moved to the historic Parlophone record label which had produced such crossover acts as the Beatles and Queen in the past. With a new record label backing them, Coldplay released their EP The Blue Room. Single “Bigger Stronger” had been previously released by Coldplay but did not have proper backing. The new marketing and distribution of “Bigger Stronger” and The Blue Room set the stage for superstardom that even Coldplay themselves couldn’t imagine.

Coldplay: Parachutes

The first full-length album by Coldplay Parachutes made the band almost an overnight success in the U.K. Coldplay was influenced by the previous generation of British rockers during the Grunge era and carried with them a style of early Radiohead into the recording studio. It would be the soft lyrics of mellow single “Yellow” that not only broke Coldplay big in the United Kingdom but in the United States and the world at large. It did not take long for Coldplay tickets to become the hottest entertainment items in all of Western Europe.

On the strength of “Yellow,” Coldplay would go on to release many other hit singles from Parachutes. “Don’t Panic” had been released in Coldplay’s indie days but charted big. Other singles like “Shiver” and “Trouble” also built the following of Coldplay around the world. It was in this time that Coldplay began to refine their stage performances as well and brought in a little more theatrics and effects into their live show. “Yellow” became the crossover hit of the year and brought in fans from all ages and genres. Parachutes went double platinum.
