Is it time for Tennessee to look to Bobby Petrino?

I have posted before about the possibility that Petrino would go to Tennessee. Off the website of the Knoxville newspaper they have pictures of 10 possible replacements for Derek Dooley and here is the best choice my view:

Miami (Fla.) coach Al Golden. If Golden wants to jump ship from the NCAA-plagued Hurricanes program, he could have plenty of landing opportunities.

  • Former Arkansas head coach Bobby Petrino. Despite his disgraceful exit from Arkansas, Petrino is going to land somewhere this offseason -- and whoever hires him will be getting one of the top coaches in the country.
  • Louisville coach Charlie Strong. He figures to be one of the hottest coaching candidates in the nation, although Louisville has said<br />
it will do whatever it takes to keep him in the fold. A former defensive coordinator at South Carolina and Florida, Strong is 23-13 in three seasons at Louisville.
  • Duke coach David Cutcliffe. The former Tennessee offensive coordinator and Ole Miss head coach would be welcomed back home by many members of the UF fan base, but others would prefer to go in a new direction rather than a return to the past.
  • Texas Christian coach Gary Patterson. A well-respected defensive coach, Patterson has built TCU into a powerhouse, but he has rebuffed several offers to leave. With TCU now in a BCS conference, that seems unlikely to change.
  • Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher. HeÕs got a plum gig at FSU, but heÕs also got a new boss. The resulting power play could push FisherÕs name into the picture for jobs at Tennessee, Auburn or elsewhere.
  • ESPN Monday Night Football commentator Jon Gruden: Sure, it seems like a longshot, and it probably is. But if Gruden decides he wants to coach in the college game, a place like Tennessee makes more sense than any other destination.
  • Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart. HeÕll be a hot coaching candidate for other schools, but given Derek Dooley and Sal SunseriÕs struggles, Tennessee will probably seek a proven head coach without ties to Nick Saban.
  • Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy. If Gundy ever decides to leave his alma mater, he should have plenty of suitors.
  • Cincinnati coach Butch Jones: Jones is 21-13 in three seasons at his current job, but one of the losses was a blowout to UT at Neyland Stadium in 2011.(AP)

Tennessee Athletic Director Dave Hart won’t be taking any public input on his search for Tennessee’s next head football coach, but that won’t stop the speculation. Here are a handful of candidates who are sure to be mentioned in the coming days and weeks

Auburn and Tennessee finished the year at the bottom of the Southeastern Conference standings. Tennessee finished the year with one conference win, while Auburn went winless inside the SEC.

Shortly after the season concluded, the Tigers and Volunteers fired their head coaches and began the search for a new leader. With a major spark needed to recharge these football teams, Bobby Petrino is a great fit for both programs.

Petrino would bring a new life to either program and could restore these teams to the top of their divisions. The record speaks for itself, and Petrino has won everywhere he has been. If given the resources of these top programs, he would excel.

As these teams continue the search for a head coach, here are the five reasons that the Tigers and Volunteers should be battling to sign Bobby Petrino.

Info on Bret Bielema Arkansas Razorbacks’ new football coach

Here are some articles that tell us a little about Bret Bielema the new Razorback football coach. Did leave for Arkansas because his grace period was running out at Wisconsin? The second article discusses the style of play that Bielema will bring to Arkansas and it is a positive article that predicts good things for Arkansas’ future.

Why did Bret Bielema leave Wisconsin for Arkansas?

Dan Wolken, USA TODAY SportsShare

7:06PM EST December 4. 2012 – College football fans and media members (particularly those with Big Ten leanings) were largely shocked Tuesday when Bret Bielema left Wisconsin after seven years to become the head coach at Arkansas.

Not only had Bielema’s name been out of the rumor mill, but there was no obvious personal reason or financial motivation for him to be a candidate anywhere much less at Arkansas.

So why would Bielema, who compiled a 68-24 record at Wisconsin, abandon one of the better jobs in the Big Ten for a middle-of-the-pack job in the SEC? Why would a native of Illinois who played at Iowa and lived his entire life in the Midwest leave his comfort zone for more rugged football territory? And why would he do it now, after clinching Wisconsin’s third straight Rose Bowl berth last Saturday night?

SURPRISE: Arkansas hires Bielema

EVALUATION: How good is the vacant Wisconsin job?

This is a guy, after all, who told the Sporting News earlier this year, “We at the Big Ten don’t want to be like the SEC – in any way, shape or form,” in response to the aggressive recruiting tactics. Now he’s going to dive headlong into the snake pit of the SEC West?

But understand this about the coaching business, especially these days: It’s always better to leave a couple years too soon than stay a couple years too long.

Make no mistake, Wisconsin is a good job. But it’s not one of the three best jobs in the Big Ten, and it’s certainly not a place where you should be going to three straight Rose Bowls. Somehow, Bielema pulled it off. And now he’s leaving for a new fan base and a new contract before he had a chance to fall short of the impossibly high standard he just set.

Deep down, he had to know it wouldn’t go on forever. College football is cyclical. Most programs reach a certain point, level off, then decline and start the cycle all over again. With Michigan back on the rise and Ohio State almost there already under Meyer, this stretch of football was as good as it could get for Wisconsin. Three Rose Bowls in a row may never happen again in the entire history of the school.

And if the Badgers went five years without winning a title, what do you think would happen? Remember, it wasn’t so long ago that Kirk Ferentz was considered the best coach in the Big Ten, going 31-7 over a three-year stretch. Ferentz had plenty of opportunities to do what Bielema did, but he stayed. Now, after a couple bad years, he’s locked into a contract the school can’t afford to buy out and stuck with a fan base that expects way more than it’s getting.

REPORT CARDS: Grades for every college football team

GOING BOWLING: Complete 2012-13 bowl schedule

It’s uncomfortable, and at a place like Iowa or Wisconsin, probably inevitable. Coaches get too comfortable, fans get bored and the moment churning out an 8-4 or 9-3 season seems like a disappointment, it’s time to get out and start over.

So Bielema played this exactly right. He gave Wisconsin seven years, brought the program to its ceiling and left before bumping his head on it. Now he’s got a new challenge at a school with plenty of resources and a fan base that will unite behind him. It’s a fresh start, and a lucrative one at that. In a sport where a coach can get fired two years after winning a national title, that’s never a bad thing.

Bret Bielema brings tough, grinding style to Arkansas

Published 15 hours and 27 minutes ago Last updated 5 hours and 39 minutes ago
Steve Greenberg Sporting News

Arkansas gets a head coach who isn’t shy about talking big—and who has some serious accomplishments to back it up.

Bret Bielema is 68-24 (37-19 in the Big Ten) in seven seasons as a head coach, all at Wisconsin. The Badgers are bound for their third consecutive Rose Bowl. Even with the asterisk, that’s a pretty big deal.

How Bielema has done it—and the clues that gives about how he’ll go about his new job in Fayetteville—is what’s most interesting today.

Part by necessity and part by design, the foundation of Bielema’s program in Madison was always “unsexy” players.

“We’re not going to appeal to the sexy,” he told Sporting News in 2011. “If a kid’s looking for bells and whistles, wants a weight room that looks like a club, we’re not the place. … We work, we grind, and we take pride in doing that. The kids who want that have gravitated to us.”

Razorbacks fans may read that and say: That’s not going to be good enough here.

Undoubtedly, the 42-year-old Bielema will aim for higher-ranked recruits than he typically went after at Wisconsin. But he is who he is. Bielema is, if you’ll pardon the term, unsexy.

A former University of Iowa defensive lineman from a tiny town in Illinois near the Iowa border, Bielema is a grinder and looks the part.

Bret Bielema, right, and Gus Malzahn will take up residence in the SEC next season. (AP Photo)

He loves players who remind him of himself. At Iowa, he worked his way up from little-known recruit to team captain as a senior. He gave the Arena League a shot after college.

He played for Hayden Fry and worked for Fry, Bill Snyder and Barry Alvarez. That should give Hogs fans an idea of what they’re getting.

This is no charmer like Houston Nutt or mad scientist like Bobby Petrino.

This is Joe Sixpack, with a booming baritone and a cocky edge.

He’ll go right at Nick Saban and Les Miles, not to mention Kevin Sumlin. He may lack polish in certain areas as a head coach—late-game clock management has been an issue—but he won’t be intimidated. Bielema is confident to the core.

“I get mad when I’m sitting there in an airport and I see what’s new in college football and there’s 10 teams listed and we’re not one of them—and I know we can beat them, or a lot of them,” Bielema told SN last year in reference to the superpower programs.

It’s fair—and, frankly, foolish not to—speculate about whether or not his recruiting at Arkansas will be good enough to compete with the monsters of the SEC.

But Bielema definitely will restore an identity to the Razorbacks. Lots of power runs. Lots of weight-room warriors. Lots of toughness.

Arkansas athletic director Jeff Long could’ve done a whole lot worse.

“Woody Wednesday” Review: Penelope Cruz, Robert Benigni Make Woody Allen’s “Rome” Movie

Review: Penelope Cruz, Robert Benigni Make Woody Allen’s “Rome” Movie

To-Rome-With-Love

<!– –>

After “Midnight in Paris,” you’re not getting–we’re not getting –a sequel, so forget it. Woody Allen’s “To Rome with Love” opens June 22nd after having already been a hit in Italy. It stars Penelope Cruz, Alec Baldwin, Jesse Eisenberg, Ellen Page, Greta Gerwig, and Roberto Benigni, as well as Woody himself and Judy Davis. Plus there are a lot of Italian actors. Much of the movie is in Italian with subtitles.

You won’t mind. “To Rome with Love” is like a throw back to old fashioned omnibus movies that tell a lot of interlocking stories with many, many characters. To his credit, Woody keeps them very distinct. Even the Italian actors–unknown to us–are so specific that you don’t miss a thing.

Mainly, though, “To Rome with Love” –besides being funny–is an interesting take on Woody’s thoughts about fame. Each member of the cast is looking, they think, to elevate themselves from the humdrum. It’s either through the heightened sense of impractical love, or — in Benigni’s case–of a regular Roman who suddenly cannot walk the streets because he’s so famous.

Penelope Cruz is a stand out, of course, as a professional call girl. Hot, sexy? Yes. But also a practical business woman with a large following among Rome’s corporate leaders. Her entire performance is spoken in Italian, which makes her even hotter.

But even with attractive young people, “To Rome with Love” is pointed at just the same audience as “Midnight in Paris.” Meaning: upscale, educated, a little older. Sony Pictures Classics would do well to remember that in the marketing. This is the antidote to a summer full of cartoon action films. More on “To Rome” next week when it’s about to open.

PS What about Woody’s character? He’s the clueless director of avant garde operas, and come to Rome to stage one with a very unusual premise: the main character performs his whole part in a stall shower while a conventional opera surrounds him. It is very funny.

James Bryant of AStateNation broke the news on the buzz Malzahn new Auburn coach

I hate that Arkansas did not get Malzahn first but Auburn hired him today according to James Bryant of ASTATENATION who I heard on 103.7 FM the buzz on the “Overtime” radio show with Matt Jones.

BREAKING: Reports Say Auburn Hires Gus Malzahn As New Head Coach

Posted on: 2:35 pm, December 4, 2012, by

AUBURN, Ala. (WHNT) – According to multiple reports, Auburn University has hired Gus Malzahn as the school’s new head football coach.

Auburn University has not confirmed these reports at this time.

Malzahn previously held the Offensive Coordinator job at Auburn from 2009-2011.  He left Auburn after the 2011 season  to become the head coach at Arkansas State.

Malzahn replaces Gene Chizik who was fired on November 25th after Auburn went 3-9, and 0-8 in SEC play.

Chizik hired Malzahn as Offensive Coordinator on December 28, 2008.

Malzahn led Arkansas State to a 9-3 record in 2012.

Bret Bielema new razorback football coach

Matt Jones just said on 103.7 the buzz “Overtime” radio show at 1:49pm that Bret Bielema is the latest name to be linked to the Arkansas football coaching job.

Matt Jones pointed out that Wisconsin has lost only 10 times in the last 3 years and only one loss was over 10 points and the Badgers have gone to the Rose Bowl the last three years.

Tommy Smith called in on the “Overtime” radio show today at 2:24pm and said that a lot of Razorback fans would have a problem with this, but I have to admit that his record is impressive and he did win big with his own recruits. At Arkansas we need a great recruiter.

He got in the news earlier this year when he fired Houston Nutt’s former offensive line coach Mike Markuson after one game this year at Wisconsin. Below is the wikipedia listing for Bielema.

Bret Bielema

[edit] Early career

Bielema played college football as a defensive lineman at the University of Iowa under legendary coach Hayden Fry from 1989 to 1992, serving as team captain his senior season. After receiving a scholarship his sophomore year, he got a tattoo of Iowa’s Tiger Hawk logo on his left calf, which he still has today.[1] Bielema graduated from Iowa with a bachelor’s degree in marketing.

He went on to play for the Milwaukee Mustangs, a team in the Arena Football League.

Bielema then returned to the University of Iowa, serving as an assistant coach from 1993 to 2001. He then became the co-defensive coordinator for Kansas State University from 2002 to 2003. He took the same position at the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 2004. Barry Alvarez, in his capacity as Wisconsin’s athletic director, selected Bielema to succeed him as head coach when he announced his retirement from coaching in 2005.

[edit] Head coaching career

In his first season as head coach of the Wisconsin Badgers in 2006, Bielema’s team ended the regular season 11–1 (7–1 in Big Ten Conference play). With the 35–3 defeat of the University at Buffalo on November 18, 2006, Bielema became the first coach in UW history to win 11 games in the regular season.[2] After a 17–14 victory over the Arkansas Razorbacks in the Capital One Bowl on January 1, 2007, he became the third coach in NCAA history to win 12 games in his rookie season, finishing 12–1.

With a 14–0 victory over the San Diego State on September 16, 2006, Bielema became the third Wisconsin head coach to win the first three games of his career.[3] Later, with a 24–3 win over Purdue on October 21, Bielema tied the record for most wins by a first-year coach at UW with seven. The other two coaches to complete this feat were Philip King in 1896 and William Juneau in 1912.[4] A 30–24 victory over the Fighting Illini on October 28, Bielema became the first coach in Wisconsin history to win eight games in his first season.[5] He then extended the record with his ninth victory on November 4, defeating the Penn State Nittany Lions, 13–3.[6] With a 24–21 victory over the Iowa Hawkeyes on November 11, Bielema became the first head coach in Big Ten history to win ten games in his first season.[7]

Bielema coached Wisconsin to victories in 17 of his first 18 games. That represents the second-best start to a head coaching career in Big Ten history. Only Michigan’s Fielding H. Yost, who went 55–0–1 from 1901–1905, had a better beginning to a career.

On October 16, 2010, Bielema’s Badgers defeated #1-ranked Ohio State, 31–18, in Madison. It was Wisconsin’s first victory over a #1-ranked team since 1981 when the Badgers upset Michigan.

Bielema has been named a finalist for the Bear Bryant Award which is given to college football’s Coach of the Year. Episode 1: Arkansans in the Capitol

__________

I have posted a lot in the past about Mark Pryor and most of the posts have been critical. (“THIRSTY THURSDAY” open letters to Senator Pryor displayed here on the www.thedailyhatch.org).  However, I must give him credit for this excellent video above about famous Arkansans who are recognized in Washington.

Twenty-third Governor (1913)

Joseph Taylor Robinson was governor only a short time before taking office as a U.S. senator. He became Senate majority leader during the Great Depression, after his nomination as the Democratic Party candidate for vice president—the first Southern officeholder on a major ticket after the Civil War.

Joe T. Robinson was born on August 26, 1872, in Concord Township (Lonoke County) to James Madison Robinson—a doctor, farmer, and lay preacher from New York—and Matilda Jane Swaim of Tennessee. Usually attending the local one-room schoolhouse during the summer, he received fewer than forty-six months of formal education. He augmented his schooling by reading classics from his father’s extensive library. In his childhood, he chopped cotton and tended to his father’s apple orchard. During his teenage years, he made a reputation as a public speaker, winning forensic exchanges in both political and religious contests. At seventeen, he took the local test and was licensed to teach first grade in the county schools. After two years of teaching, he enrolled in the University of Arkansas (UA) in Fayetteville (Washington County), attending for one year until his father’s death in 1892, when he returned to Lonoke (Lonoke County). There he studied law with Thomas C. Trimble, a judge and political leader.

In 1894, Robinson defeated the Populist candidate for state representative and became the youngest member of the General Assembly at age twenty-two. He introduced a bill to create a commission, similar to the Interstate Commerce Commission, to regulate state railroad rates. The bill was defeated, but in the next legislature, a similar bill was passed as an amendment to the state constitution and sent to the voters, who approved it overwhelmingly in 1898 by 63,703 to 16,940.

On December 15, 1896, Robinson married Ewilda “Billie” Grady Miller, a local beauty. The couple had no children.

After his one term in the legislature, Robinson concentrated on his growing law practice, earning enough income to allow him to re-enter politics. In 1902, he won a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, a position he held for a decade. With the Democrats in the minority and unable to pass their own bills, Robinson supported such progressive Republican legislation as railroad regulation, the Pure Food and Drug Act, campaign contribution restrictions, the graduated income tax, and the direct election of senators.

Robinson’s career took many rapid turns in 1912. He announced he would run for the Senate against the incumbent Jeff Davis, but after assaying Davis’s strength, he changed his mind. He ran for governor instead, and bested George W. Donaghey by nearly a two-to-one margin. But before Robinson’s inauguration, the recently reelected Davis died of a heart attack. Robinson won a close vote for Davis’s Senate seat. As governor, Robinson pushed through a progressive agenda for the state. He proposed, and the Legislature enacted, laws creating a state banking board, a state health board, and the Arkansas Highway Commission. He also oversaw the reform of the penitentiary system, including a paid oversight board and the outlawing of the notorious convict-leasing system. He also worked for ratification of the Seventeenth Amendment and the direct election of senators by the people. But on March 8, 1913, he resigned the governorship to take his Senate seat, causing a crisis in the state as Arkansas did not have the position of lieutenant governor.

In the Senate, Robinson became a politician of national stature. He stood by President Woodrow Wilson, leading fights for progressive legislation, such as a proposal to end child labor, and for wartime measures, the arming of merchant ships, and the declaration of war against Germany in 1917. After the war, he helped direct the unsuccessful battle for ratification of the Versailles Treaty, earning a reputation as a master tactician and excellent parliamentarian. In recognition of his efforts, he was chosen the permanent chairman of the 1920 Democratic National Convention.

His fame and power grew throughout the 1920s. In 1923, he became the Democratic leader of the Senate. Then, in 1924, he was one of many “favorite son” candidates nominated for president of the United States. As the convention deadlocked through 102 ballots, The New York Times anointed Robinson the “obvious compromise candidate.” Instead, the delegates chose John W. Davis, a Wall Street lawyer.

In 1928, Robinson made headlines again when, on the floor of the Senate, he attacked the anti-Catholic religious bigotry of Alabama senator Tom Heflin and the venomous hatred of the Ku Klux Klan. Because of this speech, he became a champion of religious toleration, a big issue at the time since the presumed Democratic nominee for president, Al Smith, was Catholic. Robinson was then chosen to serve as the permanent chairman of the Democratic National Convention in Houston, Texas. And shortly thereafter, Al Smith, governor of New York, selected him as his running mate; Robinson’s outspoken attack on religious prejudice in America, as well as his Southern roots, were seen as important to the ticket. Many politicos predicted that Southerners would never vote for an anti-prohibitionist Catholic for president; many believed that Robinson could help to deliver the “solid South” to the Democrats once more. When the Democrats officially nominated him for the vice-presidency on June 29, 1928, he became the first Arkansan ever nominated for a national office. By train, Robinson campaigned for thousands of miles across the South and the West. Herbert Hoover won the presidency, however. The next year, Hoover named Robinson as the only Democratic delegate to the London Naval Disarmament Conference. Upon his return, he secured enough Democratic votes in the U.S. Senate for the London Naval Disarmament Treaty to ensure its passage.

As the Great Depression of the 1930s grew, so did Robinson’s prestige. After the 1932 election, with the Democrats in control of the federal government, Robinson became the majority leader of the Senate. From this position, he pushed President Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal legislation through a sometimes reluctant Senate. In 1933, he guided the Emergency Banking Act through the Senate and introduced and pushed for passage of the Civilian Conservation Corps, the Federal Emergency Relief Act, the Work Relief Act, the Home Owners Loan Act, and the Railroad Coordination Act.

After 1933, he continued to support Roosevelt’s program, in both foreign and domestic battles. In 1935, he led an unsuccessful attempt to bring the United States into the World Court. He supported other Roosevelt measures, such as the Social Security Act and the Rural Electrification Act, even while pushing through the Robinson-Patman Anti-Price Discrimination Act to protect small retailers from large chain stores; he pushed the Robinson-Patman Act through Congress without administration support.

Roosevelt acknowledged Robinson’s many contributions on numerous occasions, most notably when he came to Arkansas in 1936—the first time a sitting president had visited the state. Arriving for the main centennial celebration at the capitol on June 10, 1936, Roosevelt then went to Robinson’s home for a private luncheon and reception. Later that summer, he served as the Permanent Chairman of the Democratic National Convention, his third time to hold that office. Later that year, the state further honored Robinson by having a special centennial coin struck with his picture on one side. Perhaps the most controversial stand that Robinson took during the year was in his opposition to the Southern Tenant Farmers’ Union (STFU), which was trying to organize the overworked and underpaid day laborers in the delta region. He defended the large landowners, arguing to the president that “outside agitators” were orchestrating the troubles. Personally, he hated that the STFU leader, H. L. Mitchell, and called him “Greasy Joe.” In the end, the large landowners won.

Robinson’s career came to an end in 1937 during one of the most heated Senate conflicts of the twentieth century—Roosevelt’s plan to enlarge the Supreme Court. In June 1937, Roosevelt offered Robinson a seat on the Court—if he could get Senate support to add up to six new justices. For the next month, Robinson led the floor fight in the bitter battle over the Roosevelt proposal in the hot Senate chamber. Suddenly, on July 14, 1937, the skirmish ended when Robinson died in his apartment, apparently the victim of a heart attack. He was laid to rest in Roselawn Cemetery in Little Rock (Pulaski County).

Wally Hall says the Hogs have their coach but it is not Gundy

Wally Hall tweeted at 12:12 pm on 12-4-12, “Hogs have their coach. Not Gundy. Should be announced today.”

I reported earlier today that Gundy would be named the coach. David Bazzel was my source and he had a friend in the athletic dept.

However, other news outlets differ with that. However, Bo Mattingly tweeted, “I’m now told by multiple sources its NOT going to be Gundy.” and Thomas Murphy tweeted, “Course correction. Arkansas FB coach negotiations ongoing. … stay tuned.”

Rumors Swirl About Mike Gundy Offer

Posted on: 12:03 pm, December 4, 2012, by , updated on: 12:37pm, December 4, 2012

Social media sites were buzzing at midday Tuesday that Oklahoma State head football coach Mike Gundy was close to being named the next head coach at Arkansas.

5NEWS content partner Bo Mattingly said about about noon that Arkansas Athletic Director Jeff Long has made an offer to Oklahoma State head football coach Mike Gundy and that Gundy has until Wednesday to decide,

Reports also indicate Gundy has told his team he is considering offers from both Tennessee and Arkansas, Mattingly said.

However, sources also told 5NEWS that Gundy won’t be the coach and that an announcement could come as early today.

Gundy’s success at Oklahoma State has made him an attractive name to many prestigious programs. In 2010 Oklahoma State won 10 regular season games for the first time in program history. In 2011 they rose to number 2 in the BCS, its highest national ranking in history.

Throughout the coaching search Athletic Director Jeff Long has said he wants a coach who is a proven winner at the highest level. Gundy has proven that in a difficult Big 12 playing against Oklahoma and Texas every year. The Cowboys won the Fiesta Bowl last season giving the school its first ever BCS win.

Gundy’s name has been linked to both the Arkansas and Tennessee jobs, but it was widely speculated that he would not leave his alma mater. Gundy was a quarterback at Oklahoma State from 1986-1989 and has had a hand in four of the five 10 win seasons in the school’s history.

Oklahoma State finished the 2012 regular season with a 7-5 record, culminating with a trip to the Heart Of Dallas Bowl on Jan. 1.

Pat Bradley of the show “The Zone” on 103.7 FM the buzz said on the show today at 12:12 that CBS Sports has confirmed that Mike Gundy will be named the new Razorback football coach. I thought that we should look at some of the past things that Gundy has done and probably he is best known for the famous “I am a man” rant.

Gundy, Reid make peace over ‘man’ rant

STILLWATER – During Mike Gundy’s press conference at Oklahoma State’s football media day, he was asked if his famous “I’m a man! I’m 40” rant was a turning point for the program.

The five-year anniversary of the tirade-that-went-viral will arrive Sept. 22, 2012.

Before the postgame rant (and including a victory over Texas Tech that preceded it) Gundy’s head coaching record at OSU was 13-15. The Cowboys are 46-15 since.

Gundy proceeded to answer the question about whether the rant was a turning point (and he’s not sure it was, although he said it did have a positive effect on recruiting).

What the coach didn’t mention during his Saturday press conference was a different type of turning point related to the rant.

He and Bobby Reid – the quarterback Gundy intentionally defended and unintentionally offended during the rant – reached a turning point in their relationship. They met to make peace.

“Bobby has come to my office just in the last few months,” Gundy said in an interview prior to a recent Cowboy Caravan speaking engagement in Tulsa.

“He flew in from Houston just to see me and sit down and talk. And he instigated it … He wanted to come and sit down with me and clear the air.”

Gundy embraced the meeting because “I don’t want to have enemies. I don’t want anybody to dislike me and I don’t want to dislike anybody. We may not agree, but I don’t look forward to passing a person in my office or passing a person on media day or passing a person at a coaches convention where we have an issue.”

The rant backstory: Reid was a superstar recruit who started 18 games for OSU during his redshirt freshman and sophomore seasons.

After two starts at the beginning of Reid’s junior season, he was replaced by Zac Robinson.

On the day of Robinson’s first home start, a column in the Oklahoman suggested attitude and lack of toughness were factors in Reid losing his job.

Instead of talking about a wild game against Texas Tech, Gundy held up a copy of the newspaper at his postgame press conference and – voice raised – unleashed a just-over-three-minutes rant.

The most repeated excerpt: “Come after me! I’m a man! I’m 40!” Gundy said.

Continued the coach, “I’m not a kid. Write something about me, or our coaches. Don’t write about a kid that does everything right, (whose) heart’s broken and then say that the coaches said he was scared. That ain’t true!”

Robinson went on to become OSU’s career leader in total yards and passing yards (since eclipsed by Brandon Weeden).

Reid earned his diploma, transferred to Texas Southern and, for a magazine story, told an ESPN writer that the rant didn’t seem genuine and “basically ended my life.”

Said Reid, explaining his OSU exit to ESPN, “When that rant happened, I was like, ‘Blugggh, I don’t think this is for me anymore.’ ”

Reid’s mother also was critical of Gundy in the ESPN story.

Reid did not respond to a message from the Tulsa World in regard to burying the hatchet with Gundy.

When Gundy was asked how it felt to make peace, he said, “Good, just because, like I said, I don’t like to have enemies. And I wanted him to know (my reasons for the rant). I thought he knew, but I wanted to make sure he knew that was for him and nobody else because I was kind of putting myself out there. I didn’t really plan it, but I knew I was putting myself out there and I didn’t care because I thought it was the right thing to do.”

Gundy believes outside influences were a factor in Reid forming post-rant opinions.

“I would never change what I did for Bobby Reid, but I would change how I did it,” Gundy said, adding that it helped him tremendously in learning to deal with people and the media. He doesn’t want the writer of the column that spawned the rant to be an enemy. Life’s too short.

“I’m a man” has come full circle because Gundy said Reid was “a big enough man to call me and make an appointment and fly to Oklahoma and come meet me. That’s not easy. It’s not like he just got in a car and drove over.”

Gundy said he and Reid talked for an hour and a half. Gundy described Reid as a smart guy with a great smile. The coach said Reid has a good job in Houston, but Reid also expressed an interest in coaching. If Reid ever finds himself working for Gundy – hey, crazier things have happened – it will be because they, nearly five years later, met to repair a bridge.

Oklahoma State head coach also reportedly in the running for Tennessee job.

Updated: December 4, 2012
Monday marked nine days since University of Arkansas Athletic Director Jeff Long announced that he would actively begin searching for a new head football coach for the Razorbacks. There’s still no official word on the progress of that search, but on Monday, the hot rumor had Long traveling to Tulsa to meet with Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy. It was also rumored that Gundy met on Sunday with a representative from Tennessee about the vacant head coaching position at that school.Sources following the coaching search speculated that Gundy has his choice of taking the Arkansas job, the Tennessee job or remaining at Oklahoma State University (OSU).

It is believed that Gundy wants more control of the football schedule at OSU, preferring to avoid the high profile non-conference opponents preferred by Athletic Director Mike Holder.

Meanwhile, longtime Boise, Idaho radio sports talk host Jeff Caves told the Razorback Nation he believes Boise State head coach Chris Petersen has an offer on the table from Arkansas that would double his current salary. Caves said it was highly unlikely, in his opinion, that Petersen would take that offer.

In a scheduled news conference Monday afternoon to discuss BSU’s appearance in the upcoming Las Vegas Bowl, Petersen did not mention and was not asked about an alleged offer from Arkansas.

One source told the Razorback Nation Monday night that Petersen had not officially turned the job down.

Stay with the Razorback Nation as we continue to monitor developments in the coaching search.
