Ecclesiastes 11-12 | Solomon Finds His Way

I have written on the Book of Ecclesiastes and the subject of the meaning of our lives on several occasions on this blog. In this series on Ecclesiastes I hope to show how secular humanist man can not hope to find a lasting meaning to his life in a closed system without bringing God back into the picture. This is the same exact case with Solomon in the Book of Ecclesiastes. Three thousand years ago, Solomon took a look at life “under the sun” in his book of Ecclesiastes. Christian scholar Ravi Zacharias has noted, “The key to understanding the Book of Ecclesiastes is the term ‘under the sun.’ What that literally means is you lock God out of a closed system, and you are left with only this world of time plus chance plus matter.”

Let me show you some inescapable conclusions if you choose to live without God in the picture. Solomon came to these same conclusions when he looked at life “under the sun.”

1. Death is the great equalizer (Eccl 3:20, “All go to the same place; all come from dust, and to dust all return.”)
2. Chance and time have determined the past, and they will determine the future.  (Ecclesiastes 9:11-13)
3. Power reigns in this life, and the scales are not balanced(Eccl 4:1)
4. Nothing in life gives true satisfaction without God including knowledge (1:16-18), ladies and liquor (2:1-3, 8, 10, 11), and great building projects (2:4-6, 18-20).

You can only find a lasting meaning to your life by looking above the sun and bring God back into the picture.

The Book of Ecclesiastes takes a hard look at life “under the sun:” life from a mortal, earthly, finite perspective. This viewpoint may be contrasted with life “over the sun:” life from an eternal, Heavenly, infinite perspective.

Under the sun, life is monotonous; over the sun, it’s adventurous. Under the sun, wisdom is vain; over the sun, wisdom is extremely useful. Under the sun, wealth is futile; over the sun, wealth opens up great opportunities. Under the sun, death is certain; over the sun, death provides great motivation. The Christian life can be compared to a puzzle, a battle, a challenge, a race, a treasure hunt, or a pilgrimage. None of these are monotonous or boring. They are the stuff of true adventure.

In Ecclesiastes Chapter 11 Solomon sees life as an investment.

Cast thy bread upon the waters: for thou shalt find it after many days. Give a portion to seven, and also to eight; for thou knowest not what evil shall be upon the earth.

Ecclesiastes 11:1-2

Specifically, he compares it to a business or farming venture.

If the clouds be full of rain, they empty themselves upon the earth: and if the tree fall toward the south, or toward the north, in the place where the tree falleth, there it shall be. He that observeth the wind shall not sow; and he that regardeth the clouds shall not reap. As thou knowest not what is the way of the spirit, nor how the bones do grow in the womb of her that is with child: even so thou knowest not the works of God who maketh all. In the morning sow thy seed, and in the evening withhold not thine hand: for thou knowest not whether shall prosper, either this or that, or whether they both shall be alike good.

Ecclesiastes 11:3-6

Farming is a noble vocation. Farmers can take satisfaction in hard work and just trust God for the results. But being a shipping merchant and a farmer both require risk, faith in God, and patience.

Then Solomon goes on to recognize that “youth” is a special time in life.

Truly the light is sweet, and a pleasant thing it is for the eyes to behold the sun: But if a man live many years, and rejoice in them all; yet let him remember the days of darkness; for they shall be many. All that cometh is vanity. Rejoice, O young man, in thy youth; and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth, and walk in the ways of thine heart, and in the sight of thine eyes: but know thou, that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment.

Ecclesiastes 11:7-9

God could create each new person fully grown, the way He did with Adam and Eve, but He has chosen to make life a progression, and that progression is one of His special gifts.

Therefore remove sorrow from thy heart, and put away evil from thy flesh: for childhood and youth are vanity.

Ecclesiastes 11:10

Youth is for enjoyment, but it also for preparation for adulthood. I don’t like the term “teenager,” because it is a modern marketing invention based upon a false evolutionary model of “adolescence.” In the Bible there are “children,” then there are “men” and “women.” There is no special “in-between” category. However, as we think about the pre-adult years, we recognize that they can be a time of joy or a time of misery. If you are a young adult, enjoy the energy and the freedom you have before your body begins to deteriorate and the responsibilities of life begin to drain you. The Christian life is not geared toward earthly retirement. Our “retirement” will be in Heaven, and even that will be full of activity. The unique thing about “youth” is that it is a time of life that, once past, does not come back again.

In the day when the keepers of the house shall tremble, and the strong men shall bow themselves, and the grinders cease because they are few, and those that look out of the windows be darkened,

Ecclesiastes 12:3
The “keepers of the house” are your arms and legs. The “bowing” is indicative of bent knees and stooped shoulders. “Grinders” are teeth. “Windows” are eyes.

And the doors shall be shut in the streets, when the sound of the grinding is low, and he shall rise up at the voice of the bird, and all the daughters of musick shall be brought low;

Ecclesiastes 12:4

“The doors shall be shut” means that you keep your mouth closed because you’ve lost your teeth. “The sound of grinding is low” because you can no longer chew your food. “Rising up at the voice of the bird” is in recognition of the trouble that elderly people have sleeping. “The daughters of music brought low” means that your voice has started to quaver.

Also when they shall be afraid of that which is high, and fears shall be in the way, and the almond tree shall flourish, and the grasshopper shall be a burden, and desire shall fail: because man goeth to his long home, and the mourners go about the streets:

Ecclesiastes 12:5

The fear “of that which is high” means the fear that elderly people have of falling down. The “flourishing almond tree” is white hair. The burdened “grasshopper” is a picture of dragging yourself along at the end of summer. The “desire” which shall fail is the loss of some of the concupiscible desires (sex and appetite). The “long home” is eternity.

Or ever the silver cord be loosed, or the golden bowl be broken, or the pitcher be broken at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the cistern.

Ecclesiastes 12:6

Several images are given of things which are as fragile as an elderly person’s life.

Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.

Ecclesiastes 12:7

And moreover, because the preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge; yea, he gave good heed, and sought out, and set in order many proverbs. The preacher sought to find out acceptable words: and that which was written was upright, even words of truth. The words of the wise are as goads, and as nails fastened by the masters of assemblies, which are given from one shepherd. And further, by these, my son, be admonished: of making many books there is no end; and much study is a weariness of the flesh.

Ecclesiastes 12:9-12

With age you learn that, even though life is unpredictable, there is wisdom in order. The best way to learn from life is the same way we should learn from the Bible: humbly.

Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath: For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God. Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.

Joe McElderry recorded the song for a United Kingdom release. It was released on December 6, 2010 as the b-side to McElderry’s “Someone Wake Me Up” where it sold over 7,000 copies. Due to Sony Music’s tight recording schedule, McElderry accidentally sang “king and queen” in the chorus instead of the printed lyric, “kings and queens” (referring to the kings and queens of Narnia), although attempts were made to electronically correct this in post-production.

The Swedish boy band E.M.D. released their version of the song on December 5, 2010. It was featured as a Sweden exclusive for their version or The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader as well as the only bonus track on their third studio album Rewind. “There’s a Place for Us” was the third single to be spawned of Rewind.^[2][3]

Music video[edit]

On November 26, 2010 a music video for the single was released prior to the official single release. The video features the trio performing in a dark room where they are walking on water with pictures of the movie around them, as well as cut scenes from the movie itself.^[3][4]

David Hodges is a Grammy award-winning writer/producer/artist hailing from Little Rock, AR.

            Life’s Big Adventure

Have you ever shared the feelings of the writer of Ecclesiastes: That this earthly life (life “under the sun“) is just vanity? Is the best we can hope for just a little temporary pleasure between the pains? If so, the problem may be that you have a wrong relationship to God. Once you are correctly oriented in your thinking about God, you really can enjoy the good gifts that come from God. Certainly, for Christians, life under the sun is not vanity.

In fact, having a right relationship with God in Christ means that our lives can be filled with:

1. Adventure

Rejoice, O young man, in thy youth; and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth, and walk in the ways of thine heart, and in the sight of thine eyes: but know thou, that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment.

Ecclesiastes 11:9

It is fun to be around new Christians. They can be like young men in their youth, when everything is new and fresh and exciting. Things that – sadly – can start to seem routine to older Christians (soul-winning; Bible studies; prayer meetings; the Lord’s supper; praise and worship) are still thrilling to them. As older Christians, although we might not always feel the same exuberance we once did, we need to be challenging ourselves to step out by faith and serve the Lord in new and exciting (even scary) ways. When is the last time you stood up in a church assembly, or a group of strangers, and gave a testimony of God’s goodness and grace?

2. Appreciation

Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them;

Ecclesiastes 12:1

The older we get, the more we appreciate what we might have been too worked up to truly appreciate the first time around. God is gracious to allow “do-overs.” Take advantage of these when the opportunity arises.

3. Academics

The words of the wise are as goads, and as nails fastened by the masters of assemblies, which are given from one shepherd.

Ecclesiastes 12:11

There is pleasure in learning from experience – and in teaching others what you’ve learned. Athletes eventually get too old to compete in the sports they loved in their youth, but many find great fulfillment and excitement in coaching. Goads prompt you to keep going; nails are what you use to hold in place what you’ve already learned.

4. Accounting

When you recognize that this earthly life we live does matter, then it’s encouraging to know that Someone’s keeping score. The idea of being held accountable can be frightening, but it’s also reassuring, because we know God doesn’t miss it when we are faithful stewards. God is the One Who’s in charge of the rewards.

Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.

Ecclesiastes 12:13-14

The wisdom that comes from God is true wisdom, and the result of true wisdom is true riches.

His name is Melvin Pickins. Many of his most loyal customers don’t even know that.

To them he’s the Broom Man. Or the Broom Guy. Or Mister B.

“They call me B, but it should be P,” he says with a laugh. “But I’ll answer to that.”

We’ll stick with Mister B, then.

Six days a week, Mister B steps off the No.8 bus on the Central Arkansas Transit Line at around 8:30 a.m., where it stops outside the Ozark Family Restaurant, just north ofthe intersection of Mississippi Street and Cantrell Road in Little Rock. He shoulders his bundle of brooms (and the occasional mop), shuffles across the street into the restaurant,and at every occupied table he makes his pitch.

“I’m selling brooms to support the partially blind. Do you need a broom?”

Monday through Saturday, two hours a day, he makes his rounds on foot and by bus,from Cantrell Road to Kavanaugh Boulevard,stopping in at restaurants and retailers andasking everyone if they need a broom.Sometimes they say yes. Far more often they say no.

Rejection, however, does not quail him,because after selling brooms on and off for 45 years, if Mister B knows one thing it isthis: Keep trying.

“To be successful in life, you gotta never quit,” he says.

And that, as far as he is concerned, is that.

Today at the Ozark Family Restaurant, no-body seems to be in a buying mood. They’rehappy enough to see Mister B, though, andtalk about baseball – he’s a Dodgers man, ourMister B – or whatever else is on their minds.

“I can’t buy any more brooms, Dan (the restaurant owner) went up on milk to $3 acup,” says one of his regulars, local realtor ValHansen, drawing an appreciative laugh from the broom seller. “You ask my wife; I thinkI’ve got more brooms in my garage than you do, Mister B.”

Sharing Hansen’s table is fellow realtor Mark Linde, who gets earnestly serious after a couple of friendly quips. “That man is an inspiration to me,” Linde says. “I’ve known him for 30 years. Rain or shine, he’s alwaysthere.”

There is unanimous agreement around the table that Mister B could teach the most ardent contestants on TV’s “The Apprentice”a thing or two about work ethic.

Such praise is all fine and good, but what Mister B really needs is someone to buy a broom. Like so many other people – be they entrepreneurs, business owners, workers –he’s feeling the pinch of the financial crisis.Yet even in the face of sales he says have tapered off for more than a year, he remains optimistic.

“I’m affected bad by the economy,” he said. “But I’ve got God in my life. If I go out there and sell one broom, I’m just as grateful,because I could have not sold any.”

Consider Mister B’s life:

He is 76 years old, and partially blind. Heis a son of Hope, where he was raised by a  grandmother who instilled him with love andrespect for the Lord, and who died the dayafter he graduated from high school. He cameto Little Rock then, in 1951.

He met and married his wife Dorothy 50years ago, and they had five children. Three are in the Little Rock area – a son who is apainter, another who works in security has served as a representative to the LittleRock Housing Authority for 34 years. He is a cancer patient, still seeing Dr. Gail Jones at CARTI. He is an ordained deacon at hischurch, New Hope Baptist on Wright Avenue,where he has served as president of the usherboard and superintendent of Sunday school.

Consider Mister B’s person:

His hands are soft, with slender, almost graceful fingers, ending in nails that arelong and neatly clipped. Salt-and-pepperstubble adorns him cheek and jowl. Hishair is black, curly, close-cropped. Hisbroad nose holds up a pair of impressively thick glasses. On a late April day, with abit of chill yet in the air, he’s wearing adark brown suit coat and trousers over a knit shirt, topped with a blue knit cap. He moves in a determined shuffle.

Consider Mister B’s wares:

His inventory varies from day to day,but usually consists of six to eight brooms.Sometimes they’re traditional strawbrooms, like the one manufactured in Mexico for the Chickasaw Broom Mfg. Co.of Memphis, Tenn., with its blue woodenhandle; or the red-handled Original Air-light from the Little Rock Broom Works,with its “100 percent broom corn fiber, no stalks.” Sometimes they’re con-tempo-rary numbers, with nylon bristles cut into a wedge shape meant to better get into corners. Always, they are held together by two straps made from old bicycle tire inner tubes, tied into loops.

Consider Mister B’s attitude:

“Life has been good to me,” he says. “I like people. Everybody’s good and I’m so grateful to all these merchants who let me come in.”

And he says this: “Everything’s going to be all right.”

And this: “When you have God in your life, you can accomplish anything you want.”

Selling brooms is not the only work Mister B has tackled. Over the years he’s worked variously at the Lighthouse for the Blind, Goodwill, and Helping Hand. But the brooms have been a constant. Asked about his first sale, he lets loose a loud laugh. “No! That was a long time ago!”It was at the School for the Blind that Mister B was encouraged to take up broom selling. “That’s what they would do,” he explained simply of the rationale. “After I got out of school, a lot of fellas were selling brooms.”

Now he’s the last. What kept him at it? “Ijust needed the money,” he said with a smile.He sells his brooms for ten bucks apiece these days, but it wasn’t always so, especiallynot when he started.

“The best broom you could get was a dollar and a half back then,” he said. “Every time the broom store went up, I’d have to go up on the brooms.”

Mister B won’t put a number on what constitutes a good day for him. In fact, he says there’s really no such thing as a best day or worst day from all his years.

“That’s something that would be hard to determine,” he says. “Some days you might sell nothing. Some days you might sell many.”

But all the mess on Wall Street has trick-led down to the streets Mister B walks. He hears his customers talk frequently about how bad the economy has gotten for them.

“I know lots of people who have been laid off their jobs because of the economy,” he says. “But it’s just something you’ve got to deal with.”

That’s why, day in and day out, Mister Band his brooms stop in at places like the Ozark Family Restaurant, Shipley Do-Nuts,Leo’s Greek Castle, Wordsworth Books,Pulaski Bank, U.S. Pizza and Satellite Cafe.

Steven McKnight, general manager of Satellite Cafe, says Mister B has been a fixture the three years he’s worked there.

“He’s pretty consistently in here week-days,” McKnight said. “People in here …are used to seeing him.People give him rides. They buy him drinks or breakfast sometimes.”

And occasionally they buy brooms.McKnight says the cafe has bought its share, though not lately.

“We seriously probably have 20 brooms downstairs,” he confides.

This April day, Mister B tarries awhile at Satellite Cafe to take part in a photo shoot. He’s gracious, but it’s easy to tell he’d rather get on his way. After all, time is money and he has buses to catch.

At the end of the session, Mister B has just one question for the photographer:“Do you want to buy a broom?”

And there it is, his mantra in action: To be successful in life, you gotta never quit.

His load lightened by one, Mister B shoulders his bundle once again and slowly makes his way down Kavanaugh, looking for the next sale.
