Nico and Jim Morrison

Not much is known by Doors fans about Nico, in most biographies about Jim Morrison she appears in licentious escapade with Morrison cavorting naked on a parapet of ‘The Castle’ in L.A. In Oliver Stone’s The Doors she appears as a German accented amalgam of Andy Warhol’s Factory groupies, but if Nico’s and Jim Morrison’s words can be believed their relationship was much deeper. Nico died July 18, 1988.

Nico was born Christa Pafggen October 16, 1938, it’s hard to say how her family reacted to Hitler they moved to the country possible to avoid the Nazi’s but Nico’s father enlisted in the army and later died in a concentration camp. In post-war Berlin the 13 year old Nico went to work as a seamstress but due to her statuesque good looks was soon modeling lingerie, it was around this time she was discovered by photographer Herbert Tobias who gave her the selenium Nico, he also took her to Paris where her modeling career took off.

Her modeling career led to small television appearances which, in turn, led to roles in movies most notably Frederico Fellini’s La Dolce Vita. In 1965 Nico’s music career began when she met Rolling Stones founder Brian Jones and she recorded the song I’m Not Sayin’ with a ‘B’ side of The Last Mile which was produced by Jimmy Page. Through Jones Nico met Andy Warhol who soon became enchanted with her and put her in The Velvet Underground, a then struggling rock band he had started to manage. Warhol put together a multimedia show called the Plastic Exploding Inevitable which featured Nico backed by the Velvet Underground. Warhol toured the show to Los Angeles where Nico probably met Jim Morrison for the first time.

Nico and Morrison were introduced at ‘The Castle’ a Los Angeles mansion of the 20’s which was being rented by Arthur Lee and Love and had become a hangout for the Los Angeles/Sunset Strip rock scene. They were introduced by Danny Fields (see video above) who thought they ‘would make a cute couple.’ Both Nico and Morrison had taken LSD and had an immediate attraction to one another, although it was by no means an ordinary meeting, Morrison and Nico, later that night did end up naked and walking on the parapet of ‘the castle.’

Nico’s and Morrison’s story doesn’t end there, Morrison encouraged her writing and soon Nico was calling Morrison her ‘soul brother’ and Morrison seemed to reciprocate this telling people he thought of her as a sister. Morrison eventually did return to Pam Courson, and Nico seems to have become obsessed with Morrison and realizing his preference for red-heads she dyed her hair red, and she did resemble Courson a bit. Though Nico dyed her hair Morrison didn’t pursue the relationship, but such was the obsession of Nico’s that she left her hair colored red even after Morrison’s death.

In the 70’s Nico alternated between a film career and a music career, starring in films directed by Phillipe Garrel. She also recorded the albums The Marble Index, The End, Drama of Exile, and Camera Obscura. As well as opening for bands like Tangerine Dream.

Nico died on July 18, 1988, while riding a bike she suffered a small heart attack while riding a bicycle and fell off injuring her head and causing a cerebral hemorrhage and died later that evening. She was 49.

Open letter to President Obama (Part 665) Brendon Ward comments on Dr. Gosnell

Open letter to President Obama (Part 665)

(Emailed to White House on 6-5-13.)

President Obama c/o The White House 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW Washington, DC 20500

Dear Mr. President,

I know that you receive 20,000 letters a day and that you actually read 10 of them every day. I really do respect you for trying to get a pulse on what is going on out here. I know that you don’t agree with my pro-life views but I wanted to challenge you as a fellow Christian to re-examine your pro-choice view.

Many in the world today are taking a long look at the abortion industry because of the May 14, 2013 guilty verdict and life term penalty handed down by a jury (which included 9 out of 12 pro-choice jurors)  to Dr. Kermit Gosnell. During this time of reflection I wanted to put forth some of the pro-life’s best arguments.

In the film series “WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE HUMAN RACE?” the arguments are presented  against abortion (Episode 1),  infanticide (Episode 2),   euthanasia (Episode 3), and then there is a discussion of the Christian versus Humanist worldview concerning the issue of “the basis for human dignity” in Episode 4 and then in the last episode a close look at the truth claims of the Bible.

Kermit Gosnell

April 29, 2013

By Brendon Ward

GosnellYou won’t see it on TV, whether paid or free-to-air.  The New Zealand Herald ran an article months ago, way before the fire was stoked.  The mainstream blogosphere hasn’t mentioned it (at least not when this was being written).  It’s not being talked about at morning tea or drinks on a Friday.

“One of the most shocking medical malpractice and human rights violations stories in recent US history has been running in a courtroom in Philadelphia for a month now but you would know that from following [major news outlets]”1

The trial of Kermit Gosnell, an abortion doctor in Philadelphia, PA involves a sensational 281-page Grand Jury report and horrific testimonies of what should have at least merited some space in the World sections of our leading newspapers, or some TV or radio airtime.  But there isn’t.

There seems to be a global media blackout in relation to this.  When pressed, a New York Times editor said, “Judged on news value alone, the Gosnell trial deserves more coverage than it’s had, in The Times and elsewhere”2 and attributes that to the chaos theory that dictates what’s news and what’s not.

So what of the details?  What is shocking medical malpractice?  What human rights have been violated?

A testimony given by a former employee of the cynically named Women’s Medical Society described how, as an unlicensed medical graduate, he helped Gosnell perform late-term abortions by snipping the spinal cords of babies as they were delivered.  “It was literally a beheading.  It is separating the brain from the body.”3

The Grand Jury report states:

“This is about the betrayal of poor, scared women, mostly young, mostly black or immigrant.  At least two of them are dead.  Many had their wombs and bowels perforated.  Many were infected with venereal diseases with unsterilized instruments.

“This is about hundreds of infanticides in which live, viable, babies in the third trimester of pregnancy were delivered – and then murdered by snipping their spinal cords with scissors. One of them was so developed that the doctor joked, before snipping, ‘he could walk me to the bus stop’. It is about thousands of abortions.”4

When law enforcement authorities entered the facility in February 2010 looking for evidence of illegal drug prescribing, this is what they found:

“There was blood on the floor and urine was splattered on the walls. A flea-infested cat was prowling around, and there were cat faeces on the stairs. Semi-conscious women scheduled for abortions were moaning in the waiting room or the recovery room, where they sat on dirty recliners covered with blood-stained blankets.

“The two surgical procedure rooms were filthy — like “a bad gas station restroom”, said a policeman. Instruments were not sterile. Equipment was rusty and outdated. Oxygen equipment was covered with dust. Corroded suction tubing for abortion procedures doubled as a suction source for resuscitation. It stank.

“Foetal remains were haphazardly stored throughout the clinic – in bags, milk jugs, orange juice cartons, and even in cat-food containers. Some were in a refrigerator, others were frozen. The investigators found a row of jars containing just the severed feet of foetuses, like voodoo fetishes. In the basement, they discovered medical waste piled high.”5

This was not something that went without client complaint – especially as in 2009 Karnamaya Mongar, an immigrant from Nepal, was given so much anaesthetic at Gosnell’s clinic that she fell unconscious and died in hospital.  When asked why the death was not followed up the chief counsel for the Pennsylvania Department of Health explained: “People die”.   There have been other complaints laid with the Pennsylvania Department of Health.  The reasons vary but they share commonality in that not one of them was met with a site visit or investigation.

Shocking medical malpractice and human rights violations; court room proceedings; law enforcement reports; Grand Jury report; the testimony of former employees; the death of clients – all point to the reality that atrocities have been committed or supervised by Kermit Gosnell.  Yet our media has nothing to say.  A prolonged power outage in semi-rural New Zealand gets front page space6, but not a case that has seen thousands of children killed, women irreversibly violated (and some actually killed), and leaves a State department with a lot of explaining to do.

I guess that’s why The Life Times exists.  If you could read this in the Herald or on stuff.co.nz, if you could hear this on the radio or watch it on TV, I wouldn’t need to write anything.  But you haven’t seen nor heard, and I have written!

As this is an unfolding story, there is something to follow – though not through your regular news source.

I recommend starting with a documentary that has been put together and can be viewed at www.3801lancaster.com.  From there like their Facebook page, follow the links and read the articles.

The Mark of the Christian by Francis Schaeffer Part 5

THE MARK OF A CHRISTIAN – CLASS 5 – Honest Answers Observable Love/F

Published on Aug 13, 2012

The class was originally taught at Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Overland Park, KS by Dan Guinn from FrancisSchaefferStudies.org as part of the adult Sunday School hour on Mar. 29th, 2012.

This class covers (section headings by Schaeffer) Section 8 – Honest Answers Observable Love Section 9 – False Notions Of Unity

____________________________

I have several spiritual heroes in my life and Francis Schaeffer was one of those. In the film series “WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE HUMAN RACE?” the arguments are presented  against abortion (Episode 1),  infanticide (Episode 2),   euthenasia (Episode 3), and then there is a discussion of the Christian versus Humanist worldview concerning the issue of “the basis for human dignity” in Episode 4 and then in the last episode a close look at the truth claims of the Bible.
Christians should present the truth in love and that is what Francis Schaeffer’s book “The Mark of the Christian” is about. I have a portion of that book below:
Christians have not always presented a pretty picture to the world.

Love in practice
Let me give two beautiful examples of such observable love. One happened among the Brethren groups in Germany immediately after World War II.

In order to control the church, Hitler commanded the union of all religious groups in Germany, drawing them together by law. The Brethren divided over this issue. Half accepted Hitler’s dictum and half refused. The ones who submitted, of course, had a much easier time, but gradually in this organizational oneness with the liberal groups their own doctrinal sharpness and spiritual life suffered. On the other hand, the group that stayed out remained spiritually virile, but there was hardly a family in which someone did not die in a German concentration camp.

Now can you imagine the emotional tension? The war is over, and these Christian brothers face each other again. They had the same doctrine, and they had previously worked together for more than a generation. Now what is going to happen? One man remembers that his father died in a concentration camp and knows that these people in the other group remained safe. But those on the other side have deep personal feelings as well.

Then gradually these brothers came to know that this situation just would not do. A time was appointed when the elders of the two groups could meet together in a certain quiet place. I asked the man who told me this, “What did you do?” He said, “Well, I’ll tell you what we did. We came together, and we set aside several days in which each man would search his own heart.” Here was a real difference; the emotions were deeply, deeply involved. “My father has gone to the concentration camp, my mother was dragged away.” These things are not just little pebbles on the beach; they reach into the deep wellsprings of human emotions. But these people understood the command of Christ about this, and for several days every man did nothing except search his own heart concerning his own failures and the commands of Christ. Then they met together.

I asked the man, “What happened then?”

And he said, “We just were one.”

To my mind, this is exactly what Jesus speaks about. The Father has sent the Son!

I truly believe that many of the problems we have today in the USA are due to the advancement of humanism in the last few decades in our society. Ronald Reagan appointed the evangelical Dr. C. Everett Koop to the position of Surgeon General in his administration. He partnered with Dr. Francis Schaeffer in making the video below. It is very valuable information for Christians to have.  Actually I have included a video below that includes comments from him on this subject.

Many liberals actually truly do argue for abortion rights over human rights. Prochoice advocate Elizabeth Williams came out and said that on 1-23-13 in her article on Salon. We hear reasons for abortion such as poverty, and  child abuse,  but why not consider adoption? Instead, the political left will stop at nothing to push the pro-abortion agenda. Why not stop and take an honest look at when life begins for the unborn child and when she begins to feel pain?

Even though Ark State is picked as 21 point underdogs to the Vols I think the final score will be 28-27!!!

Wally Hall said in yesterday’s paper:

ASU AT TENNESSEE

Almost went with the upset here because the Vols scored twice in the fourth quarter, one on a 15-yard pass, to get to 38 points and they had only 383 yards against Utah State. The Vols better be ready for “Lightning” Fredi Knighten, who rushed for 104 yards and passed for 219 against Montana State. Tennessee, 28-27

____________

I agree totally. Even though Ark State is picked as 21 point underdogs to the Vols I think the final score will be 28-27.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Arkansas State will enter Neyland Stadium this morning as an almost three-touchdown underdog to Tennessee. Regardless of the outcome, the Red Wolves will leave with a $1 million paycheck.

ASU’s trip to Tennessee today is the same as the nine other trips Sun Belt Conference teams will make into SEC stadiums this season in that it will provide a boost to the schools’ budgets and provide national television exposure.

But in the eyes of Red Wolves Coach Blake Anderson and Athletic Director Terry Mohajir, today’s game is one of two on its schedule each season that could be used to accomplish the program’s most sought-after long-term goal.

“To really measure how good you’re getting, you have to play those games,” Mohajir said. “If you never play those teams, you’re not going to really know how good you are.”

Mohajir said when he arrived almost two years ago that ASU’s most desired goal is a spot in a major bowl game, which once considered a BCS bowl, now is one of the six contract bowls as part of the College Football Playoffs. To get there, he’s always said, ASU has to expand its season-ticket base, add revenue and “grow the brand.”

Winning a game at the home of an SEC team can do that almost better than anything else. Anderson said today’s game is “just one of 12,” but he also acknowledged an upset today could help ASU perhaps more than a victory in any other game this season.

“If you want to be seen on a national stage, you’ve got to win a game on a national stage,” Anderson said. “It’s an opportunity on national television against a well-known program. … We’ve seen guys in the past take these opportunities and create an opportunity for themselves throughout the season and create momentum for recruiting and all those things.”

Anderson has experienced the benefits of such victories first hand. While an assistant at Southern Miss in 2008-2011, he helped the Golden Eagles beat Virginia of the Atlantic Coast Conference in 2009 and 2011, and Kansas of the Big 12 in 2010. In 2011, Southern Miss finished 12-2 and used the victory over Virginia to vault into the national rankings.

Southern Miss never reached a BCS bowl, but Anderson said the program benefited from beating the programs from what Mohajir calls “the higher-resource conferences.”

“Every one of those wins was helpful. A lot of people saw those games,” Anderson said. “I don’t know if I’ve ever heard a [recruit] tell me that that game was a big factor. But, again, it’s exposure, it builds confidence, it’s another W, and you need as many as those as you can get.”

Today’s game was scheduled last summer under then-ASU coach Bryan Harsin because it fit Mohajir’s three-pronged criteria for such games.

He said ASU will likely play only one game for budgetary purposes each season — next week’s game at Miami is part of a home-and-home series, as was last year’s loss at Missouri — as opposed to two or even three it has played in the past. To find that opponent — ASU goes to Southern Cal next season and Auburn in 2016 — Mohajir said open dates have to match and that school has to meet ASU’s request of about a $1 million payout.

The final requirement has to do with ASU’s ability to win the game, or at least keep it close. When today’s game was scheduled, Tennessee was coming off a 5-7 finish in 2012, and USC was a few months removed from a 7-6 finish in 2012 when next season’s game was scheduled in June 2013. The one exception is Auburn, which was scheduled in the last year after the Tigers won the SEC title.

“Who do you think you have a chance to be competitive with?” Mohajir said. “You only have so many options when you’re scheduling teams, but they haven’t been as good as they have been traditionally.”

Anderson said he knows his team is an underdog heading into today’s game against a crowd that will likely top 100,000. But if it wants to achieve something it hasn’t in the past 11 tries — ASU hasn’t beaten a team from a Power 5 conference since winning at Texas A&M in 2008 — he said the plan calls to stay simple.

“Create explosive plays and don’t turn the ball over and great effort,” he said. “That’s what wins games every week, regardless of opponent, regardless of location or any other circumstance.”

JONESBORO — Arkansas State offensive coordinator Walt Bell joked last week about wrapping junior Michael Gordon up in bubble-wrap in hopes of protecting ASU only experienced running back.

Bell and first-year Coach Blake Anderson might actually consider doing that now.

Gordon participated in ASU’s light workout Sunday and Anderson said Monday that he should be fine for today’s practice after missing the final three quarters of Saturday’s victory over Montana State with bruised ribs.

Bell said Gordon should be “100 percent” by Saturday’s 11 a.m. kickoff at Tennessee.

Count Gordon’s return as the season’s first sigh of relief from the ASU coaching staff.

Gordon’s second carry Saturday went for a 42-yard touchdown around the right end and gave ASU a 7-0 lead, but he carried the ball only six other times and spent the rest of the game watching with ice wrapped around his ribs. Anderson said Monday he was preparing himself for bad regarding the status of Gordon and linebacker Qushaun Lee, who also suffered bruised ribs but returned to Saturday’s game,.

“I fully expected that we might hear that we would lose them,” Anderson said. “Both were much better than they expected. … Encouraged that both of them should be able to play and play well. We need them both. They’re both key parts in what we do.”

Tight end Kenneth Rains also went down Saturday, with a knee injury, and an MRI is scheduled for today. Anderson said Rains is for sure out for Saturday’s game and expects him to be out for “a couple of weeks.”

Safety Money Hunter, who took a blow to the head, should return, as should receiver J.D. McKissic, who suffered a thigh bruise.

Anderson, who is already operating with a thin roster that required him to play 12 true freshmen in the opener, took the injury updates as good news.

But Anderson said Gordon, who finished with 7 carries for 68 yards and 1 touchdown, likely won’t take any hits except during pass protection drills.

“We’ve got to be smart,” Anderson said. “We can protect him and still get good work done during the week. Scout- team guys are never going to run into Mike Gordon. If he does, he probably won’t be taking any more snaps.”

Four backs picked up for Gordon.

Redshirt freshman Johnston White rushed 12 times for 48 yards with 1 touchdown and Terrance Hollingsworth carried 5 times for 15 yards and 1 touchdown; Brandon Byner and DeKeathan Williams each had carries.

Bell said the experience gained by the backups will be helpful when they are called on again.

“They may not have the same pop that Mike does — you saw what Mike looks like when he opens up and really goes — but they all had great reps,” Bell said. “Now, did we miss him? Yeah. But there were some young guys that were able to get in there and play.”

Bell and Anderson said they hope to rely more on Gordon against Tennessee, which held Utah State to 244 total yards in Sunday’s 38-7 victory at Neyland Stadium in Knoxville.

Anderson said he is hoping to speed up ASU’s fast-paced offense to neutralize what is expected to be a more talented opponent in a hostile environment. An announced Neyland Stadium crowd of 102,455 watched 14 true freshmen play in Tennessee’s victory Sunday. Those freshmen were part of a class signed by Butch Jones in February that was ranked No. 5 nationally by Rivals.com.

“The way we prepare year-round, the way we practice year-round, not everybody does that, not everybody is comfortable in that environment,” Anderson said. “If we can make people play our game, it gives us a chance to be successful.”

“Friedman Friday” FREE TO CHOOSE “Who protects the worker?” Video and Transcript Part 4 of 7 “But when workers get higher wages and more civilized working conditions through the free market, when they get them by firms competing with one another for the best workers, by workers competing with one another for the best jobs, those higher wages are at nobody’s expense”

FREE TO CHOOSE “Who protects the worker?” Video and Transcript Part 4 of 7

In 1980 I read the book FREE TO CHOOSE by Milton Friedman and it really enlightened me a tremendous amount.  I suggest checking out these episodes and transcripts of Milton Friedman’s film series FREE TO CHOOSE: “The Failure of Socialism” and “What is wrong with our schools?”  and “Created Equal”  and  From Cradle to Grave, and – Power of the Market. Milton Friedman shows in this episode how the worker is best protected and it is not by the government!!!!!!!

The essence of what Milton Friedman is saying in this episode is this:

“When unions get higher wages for their members by restricting entry into an occupation, those higher wages are at the expense of other workers who find their opportunities reduced. When government pays its employees higher wages, those higher wages are at the expense of the taxpayer. But when workers get higher wages and more civilized working conditions through the free market, when they get them by firms competing with one another for the best workers, by workers competing with one another for the best jobs, those higher wages are at nobody’s expense. They can only come from higher productivity, greater capital investment, more widely diffused skills. The whole pie is bigger, there is more for the worker, but there’s also more for the employer, the investor, the consumer and even the taxpayer. That’s the way a free market system distributes the fruits of economic progress among all the people. That’s the essence of the age of the worker.”

Pt 4

Friedman: Suddenly, in a free market, workers who once could not find jobs are now at a premium. Everyone benefited, workers and employers alike and the town thrived. One of the workers who arrived in Spartanburg was Mr. Juma. He came as a refugee from Edie Amiens Uganda.

Mr. Juma: We came in this country just with $139. I had a family, my wife and two kids. And, we came with only four bags of clothing which weighs about 40 pounds each, but we’re not allowed to take more than that. We had to leave all our possessions, all our property in Uganda. And myself, I just came down to Flowers Baking Company and I was hired as a laborer to work in the plant at $2.49 per hour.

Friedman: Five years later he is chief accountant of the company. In a free market his best protection his real wealth, turned out to be his skills and his desire to use them.

Juma: America has to offer me a lot of things. And this is a great country. I came in this country penniless, today I own a house, I own three cars, my wife has got a good job, I myself have got a good job and the children are schooling and everything has been working so fine. I believe this because of opportunity. This is where everyone wants to work in this country. There is lot of opportunity.

Friedman: When unions get higher wages for their members by restricting entry into an occupation, those higher wages are at the expense of other workers who find their opportunities reduced. That’s the essence of the age of the worker.

DISCUSSION

Participants: Robert McKenzie, Moderator; Milton Friedman; Lynn Williams, International Secretary, United Steel Workers of America; Walter Williams, Professor of Economics, Temple University; Ernest Green, Assistant Secretary of Labor, Department of Labor, Washington, D.C.; William H. Brady, President, W. H. Brady Co.

MCKENZIE: The discussion is already underway here at the University of Chicago, so let’s join it.

L. WILLIAMS: Well, we tried a free market system without labor unions. We tried it back in the 1920s and into the ’30s and it led the world into the biggest economic disaster it’s ever seen in modern times. Now I don’t think that we’re talking free market or labor unions. We’re talking free market with or without labor unions and a free market system without labor unions is a total disaster.

MCKENZIE: Let’s get other reactions to this, now, around the group. Is the free market system, Milton’s Friedman’s been arguing I think, not labor unions, which best protect the interests or serve the interests of the worker? Walter Williams, your reaction.

W. WILLIAMS: Well, I think clearly labor unions serve the best interests of workers who happen to be members of labor unions at the expense of workers who are excluded from being members of labor unions.

MCKENZIE: Ernest Green?

GREEN: I don’t think you can have a democratic society without having trade unions. I think if you look at any democratic country, it’s essential to it, right of workers to organize and I think it’s consistent if we are to maintain a democratic country, those freedoms that the right of workers to organize is a primary objective that maintains a democratic country, those freedoms that the right of workers to organize is a primary objective that we have to maintain.

MCKENZIE: Bill Brady?

BRADY: Well if they are so vital, why are so many union members leaving the union? Why are they, why are they losing so many __ why are the unions losing so many decertification elections? Why has the number of union members declined so precipitously from 23 percent of the labor force to what is it now __ less than 19, 18 percent?

L. WILLIAMS: All depends whose figures you’re reading. But workers aren’t leaving the labor movement in droves. The union is not declining precipitously. My union, the United Steel Workers of America, the major unions in the country, many small ones are out organizing and growing. The mix of work __ the mix of work in the society is changing. We have some employers, as we saw in the film, who can’t wait to rush off to the south and try to get in an anti-union environment and invest their money in prosperity in the south instead of in the north and surely if you invest money anywhere you’re going to have prosperity.

MCKENZIE: Let me just __

L. WILLIAMS: So we also have a mix in terms of Civil Service and service workers, where we have employers who have grumbled on that film about $2.90 minimum wage.

BRADY: I don’t know that if you __ I don’t know that if you invest money anywhere that you’re going to have prosperity. I don’t think that that’s a given. That is, you seem to me to be dealing in a premise there that is incorrect.

(Several people talking at once.)

MCKENZIE: Wait a minute now, wait a minute. The key question we’re discussing is: Who protects the worker? Is it the labor union or the free market that best serves his interest?

W. WILLIAMS: Well, it seems like from the evidence that I have, from a number of research projects that I’ve engaged in, I found that labor unions protect their members often at the expense of disadvantaged people. And it’s a very, very interesting question that labor unions down through the ages have discriminated against all kinds of people in favor of a particular class of workers.

L. WILLIAMS: We haven’t, Walter, we haven’t

W. WILLIAMS: We find that labor unions have gone out on strikes and have murdered and maimed people because other people sought entry and in terms of Mr. Green’s remark, he says that in the free democratic society we need labor unions. Yes, that is true, we need the right for voluntary association, that is people have the right to form association, but it should not be a requirement that you be a member of a labor union in order to establish a contract for employment.

L. WILLIAMS: Can’t we get some __ can’t we get some perspective in this, Walter. Talking about unions down through the ages makes no sense at all in terms of where we’re at now in this century at this time. This business of trying to relate where unions come from to the, to the medical profession and Hippocratic oaths, Hippocratic oaths or hypocritical oaths, however one looks at that, back in the Greek aeons really have very little relevancy.

W. WILLIAMS: Yes it does.

L. WILLIAMS: The violence, see hear me out a minute , I waited patiently.

W. WILLIAMS: Okay, okay.

L. WILLIAMS: The violence it’s associated with __ well, not so patiently, but I waited. The violence associated with the labor movement and so on have been minimal and was a reaction in this century, not over the ages, a reaction in this century to the violence done workers by corporation and powerful economic groups when there was no workers’ organization to protect them and no way to deal with their greed and with their power __

MCKENZIE: Okay. Now, now I’m turning to Milton because he’s heard the flavor of the discussion.

FRIEDMAN: Sure. What Lynn Williams is now saying is utter nonsense. There’s no other __ no two ways about it. The conditions of the worker in this country before there was labor unions were very important __ improved very greatly. You cannot tell me the millions of people, my parents, your parents, for all I know, parents of many people around, came to this country from Europe in order to be exploited and in order to be subjected to violence. Of course, there were incidents of violence.

GREEN: I disagree with that vehemently. I mean most of the blacks came to this country not voluntarily, but they were shipped here.

FRIEDMAN: The blacks __

GREEN: And the interesting thing about the issue on __ on Spartanburg though __

FRIEDMAN: The blacks did not __ excuse me, hold on for a second.

GREEN: Is that you left out __

FRIEDMAN: Hold on.

MCKENZIE: Let him finish and then back to you.

GREEN: All right.

FRIEDMAN: The blacks are an exception and I agree with you completely.

GREEN: Twenty-two million exceptions, though.

FRIEDMAN: But they are a very important exception. But there are also millions and millions __the people that Mr. Williams represents are not mostly blacks. They are mostly from the Slavic countries, came from Eastern Europe.

L. WILLIAMS: If you look at the membership of the Steel Workers __

FRIEDMAN: If we __ if we go back, the violent __ there was violence, of course, there always has been violence. It’s not excusable, I’m not excusing violence on the part of anyone, but I agree with Mr. Green and with Walter Williams that people should be free to organize. Of course they should be free to organize. What I object to is the special privileges that have been given by government to labor unions which are not available to other groups at all. When labor unions have used violence in industrial disputes they are not subjected to the same sanctions as people ordinarily are. When cars are turned over in the course of a labor dispute, how often do people go to jail as a result of it?

Open letter to President Obama (Part 664) “How to Stay Free” in Milton Friedman’s FREE TO CHOOSE Part 2 of 7 “We have assigned increasing tasks of great importance to government. We have turned over to government a larger and larger fraction of our income to be spent on our behalf and the results are plain for all the same they are disappointing”

Open letter to President Obama (Part 664) (Emailed to White House on July 29, 2013)

President Obama c/o The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW
Washington, DC 20500

Dear Mr. President,

I know that you receive 20,000 letters a day and that you actually read 10 of them every day. I really do respect you for trying to get a pulse on what is going on out here.

______________________________

In 1980 I read the book FREE TO CHOOSE by Milton Friedman and it really enlightened me a tremendous amount.  I suggest checking out these episodes and transcripts of Milton Friedman’s film series FREE TO CHOOSE: “The Failure of Socialism” and “The Anatomy of a Crisis” and “What is wrong with our schools?”  and “Created Equal”  and  From Cradle to Grave, and – Power of the Market.

In this episode “How to Stay Free” Friedman makes the statement “What we need is widespread public recognition that the central government should be limited to its basic functions: defending the nation against foreign enemies, preserving order at home, and mediating our disputes. We must come to recognize that voluntary cooperation through the market and in other ways is a far better way to solve our problems than turning them over to the government.”

In this episode Milton Friedman makes the point, “From regarding government as a threat to our freedom, we have come more and more to regard government as a benefactor from which all good things flow. We have assigned increasing tasks of great importance to government. We have turned over to government a larger and larger fraction of our income to be spent on our behalf and the results are plain for all the same they are disappointing.”
Pt 2
Almost 200 years ago a remarkable group of men gathered in this room to write a Constitution for the new nation that they had helped to create a few years earlier. They were a wise and learned group of people. They had learned the lesson of history. The great danger to freedom is the concentration of power, especially in the hands of a government. They were determined to protect the citizens of the new United States of America from that danger. And they crafted their Constitution with that in mind. That Constitution has served us well. It has enabled us to preserve our freedom for close on to 200 years. But in the past 50 years, we have been forgetting the lesson that these wise men knew so well. From regarding government as a threat to our freedom, we have come more and more to regard government as a benefactor from which all good things flow. We have assigned increasing tasks of great importance to government. We have turned over to government a larger and larger fraction of our income to be spent on our behalf and the results are plain for all the same they are disappointing. The great expectations have not been achieved and our freedoms have suffered in the process.
Where did it all go wrong? Government began to take an increasing part in our personal affairs nearly 50 years ago. It was 1933, at the lowest point of the worst depression in history. The idea took root that capitalism had failed and that failure was responsible for the human and economic tragedy. In the early 30’s, Franklin Delano Roosevelt and his advisors met here to devise programs to meet the problems of the depression. Their answer was to give central government more power. Out of that beginning came today’s welfare state.
This Empire State Plaza in Albany, NY is a fine example of the difference between public political power and private economic power. It was constructed while Nelson Rockefeller was Governor of the state of New York. The Rockefeller family has spent millions of its private money on good causes. It has endowed universities like my own, at the University of Chicago, financed medical research, reconstructed Williamsburg, yet not all the private money of the Rockefeller family gave them anything like the amount of power that Nelson Rockefeller was able to have as Governor of the State of New York. He constructed monuments like this all over the state, using every expedient he could think of to finance them. When he left office, taxes per persons in New York State were higher than in any other state in the country excepting only Alaska. And there was a monumental debt besides. So much so, that his successor, who had the reputation as a Democratic congressman of being a big spender, had to use his inaugural speech to preach the virtues of austerity and to say the time of wine and roses is over.
Look at this skyline. It’s Chicago and I think it’s very beautiful. Much of it is less than 20 years old. Those tall buildings were built by private enterprise for use by private enterprise. Not by government for use by government bureaucrats. These are productive monuments, not a burden on the taxpayer, a burden that has almost bankrupted New York City. The irony is that for the most part it was good intentions that led us to where we are today, a nation governed by bureaucratic empires. I wonder whether when they built this building, they realized that it was going to come out looking like a fortress. From modest beginnings in 1953, the Department of Health, Education and Welfare has grown into a veritable empire. Only a small part of its total staff is housed in this headquarters building, a mere 2,000 bureaucrats. Its budget is the third largest budget in the whole world exceeded only by the entire budget of the United States and of the Soviet Union. It employs directly 150,000 full time people and the empire it rules employs another million. More than one out of every 100 people in the U.S. works in the HEW empire.
As we have seen in this series, the Department of Health, Education and Welfare is spending increasing amounts of our money each year on health. One effect is simply to raise the fees and prices for medical and hospital services without a corresponding improvement in the quality of medical care that we receive. It is controlling more and more of the food and drugs we buy. In the process, discouraging the development and preventing the marketing of new drugs that could be saving tens of thousands of lives a year. In the field of education the sums being spent are skyrocketing. Yet by common consent, the quality of education is declining. More and more money is being spent and increasingly rigid controls imposed to promote racial integration. Yet our society is becoming more fragmented. In the field of welfare, billions of dollars are being spent each year, yet at a time when the standard of life of the average American is higher than it has ever been in history, the number of people on welfare roles is growing. Social Security, the budget is colossal, yet it is in deep financial trouble. The young complain and with considerable justice about the high taxes they must pay and those taxes are needed to finance the benefits that are going to the old, yet the old complain and also with justice that it is difficult for them to maintain the standard of life that they were led to expect. A system that was enacted to make sure that the old never became objects of charity sees an increasing number of our older folk on the welfare roles. By its own accounting, HEW in one year lost through fraud, abuse and waste and amount of money that would have built well over 100,000 houses costing $50,000 a piece. Little wondered that those initials are increasing coming to stand for “How to encourage waste.”
Martin Anderson: We found in some cities that upwards of 20_25% of all the people currently receiving welfare are either totally ineligible for welfare or are receiving more than they should be receiving. And it appears in looking into this that the main reason for this is not the welfare laws themselves, but the way they are administered. They are administered in a very lax and loose manner. One of the most famous cases, in fact it just happened last week, they arrested a woman in southern California, they referred to her as the Welfare Queen. And over the past six or seven years she has received $300,000 in welfare payments. Which of course is on an after tax basis, so if you put her on a before tax basis, it might be equivalent to over a million dollars in before tax income. And, she and her husband were living in a nice $170,000 home, nice cars, and she used a very simple technique. She just used alias, used false names, and signed up to get countless different welfare agencies and departments and drove around and collected her checks.
Friedman: Something had to be done about this scandalous state of affairs. What better bureaucratic decision than to set up a special department crammed with computers and civil servants all dedicated to tracking down waste using taxpayers money, of course, in the process. $27.5 million in the first year.

Butch Jones sings the praises of Arkansas St at his press conference this week!!!!

Butch Jones’ weekly news conference transcript

Posted: Tue 2:29 PM, Sep 02, 2014
Home / Sports / Headlines List / Article
This week the Vols are preparing for Arkansas State.

(Quotes from Tennessee head coach Butch Jones’ weekly news conference as the Vols prepare this week for Saturday’s noon game against Arkansas State.)

“Good afternoon, good to see everyone again, kind of a recap from a couple nights ago and then moving onto Arkansas State. From a competitive standpoint, I liked the way we competed, I thought our players were ready to go. I thought they did a great job of really preparing themselves mentally and physically for game day. They put in the work. We talk about investing in victory each and every week, earning the right to win as opposed to hoping to win. I thought our players did a pretty decent job with that considering a lot of these individuals are going through it for the first time of their in-game preparation and weekly preparation.

“I thought they did a good job with our in game management, our overall management of the sidelines. I always had the appropriate personnel out on the field, so that was great to see.

“Offensively we took care of the football. From a communicative aspect, I thought our communication was about above average. We need to continue to improve in that. I thought defensively I thought we did a good job on staying ahead of the chains, staying ahead of the sticks, forcing third-and-long situations. But major, major, major improvements must occur with this football team. It starts with special teams, I was not pleased at all with our performance on special teams. We did not play winning football. In the teams game, we spend, we invest too much time in our special teams game and everyone taking ownership of their role, executing their assignment and doing their job. We chart impactful plays, every individual can impact the game in one shape, form, or another. With Arkansas State, coming in here for a noon game, we need to continue to improve in all facets of special teams.

“Didn’t think we had much rhythm and consistency on offense in the first half. We had great field position and we should have had more points at half time. Too many three-and-outs, weren’t able to extend drives.

“Defensively, even though we had a couple forced turnovers, I didn’t like our ball disruptions. We were trying to get the ball out, I didn’t think we swarmed to the football that we expect our defenses to play here. I think we need to make major strides that way.

“And then the ability to run the football, we averaged 2.8 yards per rush. I don’t look at averages, I look at run efficiency. What is the definition of an efficient run? An efficient run is four yards or more, or if it is second-and-short or third-and-short you get the first down. Because your average rush or yards per carry could be misconstrued because you could have one 80-yard run and then the rest you are below average. But when you look at the average it looks good. I am more interested in realistic statistics which is run efficiency and I didn’t think we did a very good job there. We have to be able to run a little bit more.

“Next challenge now for this young football team, a little less than 50 percent made their debut, offensively there was just one starter that started the game that started last year’s Kentucky game. So we started 10 new faces on offense. We need to continue to develop this week with it being a short week it critical. The next evolution of this football team is learning how to prepare your minds and your bodies for noon start. A 12 o’clock game, adjusting your body clocks. That is a little bit different as well in your preparation and your mindset. Everything continues to be new learning experience as we continue to grow and mature as a football team.

“Arkansas State, comes in here, their players expect to win no matter who the head coach has been. They win and they go to bowl games. If you look at their body of work over a period of time it has been very, very impressive. They are an up-tempo, no huddle offense, they like to snap the ball exceptionally quick. Their offensive line does a great job, their center is the gas pedal and he does a great job, they all do. Sprinting to the line of scrimmage and getting lined up. They have one of the best punters/kickers in the country. He can flip field position in a hurry so they are a very good football team. They are a veteran group in the back end of their defense and the secondary and they will pose our receivers some great, great challenges. They are very physical, they run to the football, their quarterback is dynamic with the ball in his hands, he can also distribute the football. They have good wide receivers. So a good football team. Our football team has to come in ready to play Saturday at noon.

“The other challenge is, we need Vol Nation. We had the best football environment in the country, 102,455, our fans were outstanding. It didn’t matter, rainbows, rain, shine, they were here and they stayed to the end. Our student section was outstanding, the Rocky Top Rowdies, now as we call them. We are going to need everyone. I am told, again, we are close to a sellout. We need everyone to buy their tickets and support this football team and continue to make one of the greatest venues in all of college football and a home field advantage for this young football team.”

(On issues in the run game)
“When you look at your run game, it is all 11 individuals working together as one. There were about eight incidences where we were running the football, and we were one block away from a big play. A lot of times it’s your backside cutoffs, your lineman not being on the proper defender. You have to be disciplined and stay low with your pad level. It’s not just the offensive line. Sometimes, it may be the tight end on a combination block. It could be the back not making the proper read or the quarterback keeping it. There were a lot of single breakdowns. We are working to get that corrected.”

(On who he was disappointed with on special teams)
“All of them. It was exceptionally disappointing. Everything starts with operation and timing. Our punts and field goal executions were too long. I didn’t like our coverage on the punt team. Our kickers didn’t do a good job of putting the ball in the box on kickoffs. They sprayed the ball, which puts your coverage team in some really challenging situations. Our kickoff return teams didn’t maintain blocks or work with space well. We have changed our schemes this year with some nuances, but we weren’t able to get the ball back to the field. On special teams, it is one out of 11. everyone has an assignment to do that’s impacting to the game. Some of these individuals may only have four or five plays in a game, but you can impact a game. You might be the right guard on kickoff return and only get four snaps, but why don’t you be the best right guard return man in America? We invest too much time in special teams to come out and perform like that. We have a lot of new players and faces. The speed of the game was kind of a shock to them, but we weren’t in the proper body positions. It was a magnitude of a lot of little things.”

(On the returners performance)
“It wasn’t the returners. Cam Sutton had a big hand in terms of punt returner in helping us win the football game. One of the hardest skill sets in football is catching a punt with a four second hang time, and the coverage team has six and a half seconds to get down field and make a tackle or force a fair catch. I thought his concentration was outstanding, but he was never given an opportunity because we didn’t win at the line of scrimmage. The small details that it takes to make a winning football team are what we didn’t do a good job of.”

(On making changes)
“We came in on Monday and got right to work, but you have to be cognizant that it is a short week for them, and it was a physical football game. We have to keep that in mind. We have a lot of work to do, and it is a balancing act. What you did last week has absolutely no bearing on the outcome of this week. You have to have a short term memory. It doesn’t matter if you win or lose. You have to move on, and that is what we have been stressing with a good football team coming here.”

(On status of injured players)
“Matt Darr will be at practice today. He will be fine. He just rolled his ankle. He will go through punt period and practice. In terms of Jacob Gilliam, he will be out for the year. He tore his ACL, and it is very unfortunate. I feel for him and his family. Here is a young man who walked on and earned a scholarship. He earned it. It is very unfortunate, but that is football. The next guy in will be given an opportunity. It could be Brett Kendrick, Dontavius Blair or Coleman Thomas. We have been preparing these guys for this opportunity. Jacob earned the respect of his peers, and he worked so hard to become our starting left tackle.” (On the confidence in the new players’ ability after seeing them in action Sunday night)
“Well it is on-going. You build that trust over a body of work and course of time. These kids love football and need football in their lives. They understand what they are representing every time they represent The University of Tennessee. You win the week through your efforts in practice. You take the practice to the game field. This is a new week and they have to earn the respect again. They have to earn the right to win. What they did last week has no bearing on what they do this week so that is something we will continue to harp on them. We are educating a football team. These individuals have no idea. I bet you a good 12 of them came up to me after the game and said Coach, I now get what you have been saying. I have now experienced it. If you think about it all the emotions of going through your first game. You show up and there are about 55,000 people to greet you at the Vol Walk. That is a powerful, energetic experience in and of itself. Then you go through your pre game and have a pouring down rain storm. You might have to go through the consequences of having to push back your pre game. You could be preparing for a lightning delay and all of those things are clutter and distractions. All those 17 and 18 year olds going through it for the first time. That is why I thought they handled in game management pretty well for the first game.”

(On Arkansas State having five different coaches over the past five years)
“I think it is how you look at it. It is difficult because we know first hand that you win with consistency and continuity, but those have been some great coaches. They have a great coaching staff there now. Their players are well prepared. They challenge us schematically in special teams and all the different looks they present, also in the offense and defense as well. They are an extremely well coached football team. They play with great effort. They have a passion to get to the football. Everything is how you look at it just like how it is in life. They have been touched by some great football coaches. They learn the fine details of football and the fundamentals. It could be held to an advantage because of all the different football coaches you go through and learn different things. They have a great coaching staff in place right now and I have a lot of respect for them.”

(On Jacob Gilliam)
“I found out yesterday. He was still in our team meeting. I have spoken briefly with him and we will continue to have dialogue. Our players want him around. They wanted to move his locker to be next to the other tackles. That is the mindset of the buy in. I don’t like to say the word buy in, but the investment of this football team right now. They are thinking about the game and about each other. That was great to see. I love him and I love his family. I love everything that they stand for.”

(On how Jacob Gilliam is dealing with the injury)
“He is disappointed. He has put in a lot of hard work, effort and commitment into it. It will serve him year down the road with handling adversity. He will be better from it. Obviously you would expect him to be down after putting so much work into it.”

(On Fredi Knighten)
“He is explosive, dynamic with the ball in his hands. He has to be accounted for with all he does. He can distribute the football. He can flip field position and change the game in one snap.”

(On LaDarrell McNeil)
“(He earned that spot) with consistency and some experience. We will continue to evaluate our secondary. The individual you just spoke about will continue to compete. It will be evolving as the football team continues to evolve. LaDarrell McNeil had a very good training camp.”

(On potential medical redshirt for Jacob Gilliam)
“Right now, no. We are looking into anything and everything to exhaust all measures. Right now we are still in the investigating stages.”

(On Trooper Taylor, Arkansas State cornerbacks coach)
“Just a little bit, not much. I understand just being at Tennessee and being a long time coach in the SEC. I have had the chance to meet him a few times but not a personal relationship. Just met him and know people who know him that speak fondly of him.”

(On the concern of developing the offensive line)
“It is a concern from the overall depth standpoint. We have repped a number of individuals all training camp. We have had a plan in place. You always have contingency plans as coaches. The great thing is Brett Kendrick, Coleman Thomas andDontavius Blair have all garnered first team repetitions. In terms of teaching and learning it they have had as many reps asJacob Gilliam’s has had. Now it is the individuals working together. The great thing is that they will be next to Marcus Jacksonwho I thought played a very good football game Sunday night. He is experienced.”

(On Arkansas State’s defensive scheme)
“It is a similar style to our defense. They are very talented in the back end of their defense. They run well, and they are very physical. Their linebackers are downhill, physical players. Their defensive front is very active. It will be a different defensive scheme for us in term of moving forward from Utah State.”

(On where Jalen Hurd can improve)

“Well first of all, pass protection. The first sack he gave up, he didn’t sink his hips and he got bull-rushed. He’s really been consistently one of our best pass protectors in all of training camp. After that one, I think that was a little “Hello, welcome to college” football and then he settled down but I just think your overall instincts, fundamentals, fine details, pass protection, route running and your run reads, understanding how to run at angles and set your blockers up. Great running backs place the linemen on their blocks and so just the fine details at that position and I think you’ll see Jalen continue to improve day in and day out and week in and week out.”

(On Hurd’s abilities as a pass catcher)

“Very able. He’s a weapon and we’re going to get him the ball more on the perimeter and in some different sets. You may even see him in the slot at times because he has very soft hands and he’s good with the ball in his hands.”

(On Hurd showing ability to block)

“Yes. You’re exactly right and thanks, John, for bringing that up. Alton Howard did a great job of finishing the run but you know, we talk about the junction point and the point of attack, and Alton would have never gotten into the end zone if it wasn’t for Jalen Hurd. To me, that was one of the best plays Jalen Hurd had all game and we talk about playing without the ball in your hands and impacting the game. You can impact the game more from a running back standpoint more than just carrying the ball. That’s part of being a complete running back and you’re exactly right. He’s the reason Alton was able to get the ball into the checkerboards.”

(On Jalen Hurd’s nerves having not played during his senior year of high school)

“I thought Jalen played well. He got the tough yards and again, a four-yard run is a good run. Four plus four plus four, if I’m not mistaken, equals 12, am I right? So that’s a first down. You get four yards first and the big runs will come. Jalen earned tough yards. I thought he ran behind his pads, the screen play. But again, Daniel Helm made the screen play with his block at the point of attack and made that occur but nobody saw that. Again, those are all the things when we talk about playing complimentary football and playing together as one. I thought Jalen, for his first game, did some good things to build upon and in terms of him missing his senior year, I think he benefitted from being an early enrollee. He was able to gain that back during the winter months through strength and conditioning and also in spring football, having those 15 opportunities.”

(On how tough it is to prepare for Arkansas State)

“Well it’s a challenge and again you have the Montana State game but you have to look at other forms of where they have been and kind of try to say, OK what games are they going to look at. How are they going to try to schematically line up against us so it’s a great challenge especially with a young football team. You have to be ready again for anything and everything. It’s still another game of the unknowns because we only have one film on them. A lot of times, the packages of offense, defense and special teams will continue to expand and grow from week one to week two, just like we’ll do some different things as well. Again, you have to be ready for anything and everything.”

(On how to make sure players zone in on this week)

“Well we haven’t done anything yet. We’ve won one football game. Arkansas State is a good football team and it gets back to, I think you already know the answer, the Power of One. One common commitment, one purpose, one mindset, one opponent at a time, one practice at a time. All I want to do is win the day. I want to be a better football team as soon as we walk off the fields of the Anderson Training Complex. That’s what I want, is to be a better football team and the Power of One. Our players have done a good job with that, to date. I don’t foresee that being any problem at all, but again just focus on the one thing. If each player can better their game by just one thing, collectively we improve as a football team.”

(On Chris Weatherd’s role)

“Well Chris is a very talented young man. As he continues to grasp the knowledge of the defensive scheme and also on special teams, you’ll see his role continue to be elevated within our schemes. He’s very explosive, he can run, he’s a big-bodied individual who can run and that’s the type of individuals we need to recruit here to improve our roster. Football is very, very important to him and he’s done a great job of picking things up. You know, when you look at it, it’s pretty remarkable. Chris didn’t arrive until August and to be doing what he’s doing in a very short period of time, I’m excited to see what he can do when he gets a couple of weeks of true practices, not just training camp. He’s an individual who should continue to grow and develop and get better and better.”

(On the speed of the defense)

“I thought we ran to the football. We’re still not quite of what we expect with our expectations and our demands of how we’re going to play defense here. But I did see marked improvement. I thought our players played with confidence but again, I thought for the first game we tackled fairly decent. You know when you look at our tackling percentages, but still we have a long, long way to go from being able to play pressure with a three-man rush, with a four-man rush. We gave up a couple of big runs, we mis-fit a couple of runs, we were too wide in our alignments that exposed us in some passes. So again, alignment and assignment. That’s where it starts and we still had too many breakdowns and assignment breakdowns that we need to improve going into Arkansas State. But I see progress, Jimmy, to answer your question. In a nutshell, I see progress.”

(On Josh Smith’s first big catch helping build confidence)

“Well, big. Everything about the game is confidence but you earn you confidence through your body of work , in your consistency and your performance. Josh has been consistent all camp. It was great to see him start off with that big running catch but again, how come you didn’t bring up the block by Alton Howard? Without the block by Alton Howard, that long pass never happens. That’s what we talk about when playing together as a unit, the power of the position, the power of the unit, making plays for each other, not being selfish and that was as big of a play that Alton had as anyone, was getting that block for Josh to be able to have the big running catch.”

(On Brett Kendrick’s improvements)

“He’s continued to develop and he’s done a very good job of it. Now it’s for real. But he’s really taken coaching and he listens to every work that coach Mahoney says. I started to see him play with a little bit more mentality of what we expect. Not there yet, not anywhere what we expect but I’ve seen marked improvement in his development. He’s very intelligent and very athletic. I’m excited to see how far he can take this.”

(On Brett Kendrick)
“He has continued to develop and he has done a very good job of it and now it is for real. He is really taking coaching, he listens to every word Coach Mahoney says. I started to see him play with a little more of a mentality of what we expect. Not there yet, not anywhere what we expect but I have seen marked improvement in his development. He is very intelligent and he is very athletic. I am excited to see how far he can take this.”

(On preparing for Arkansas State’s quarterback versus Utah State’s)
“It helps but you are talking about two entirely different dynamics at quarterback. What we do defensively will be a little bit different than Utah State. Every game is a new story, every game takes on kind of a flavor of its own. So you will see some differences. Both are very, very good quarterbacks, but they are particularly different.”

(On Arkansas State’s offense)
“They are going to involve the quarterback more in the run game and reads and call plays for the quarterback. He is the catalyst, he makes it happen. Whether it is throwing the ball, whether it is running the football, they have designed run schemes for him and very rightfully so. He is very dynamic.”

(On being efficient in the red zone)
“That is one of our keys to winning football games, efficiency in the red zone and being efficient. When we get the ball in the red zone you have to take advantage of it. The whole key to red zone efficiency is scoring touchdowns as opposed to kicking field goals. Although we weren’t able to get much rhythm and consistency and continuity offensively in the first half, what I did like was we were able to score touchdowns for the most part in the red zone. We get the great turnover by our kickoff team, we converted it into seven points. If we converted to three points that it really a win for the defense. So being able to, when you get in the red zone, scoring seven instead of three. Again, we spent a lot of time with our red zone and working within the red zone. That is one of the keys to winning football games.”

(On the placekicking position)
“They will continue to compete each and every day, whoever has the most productivity in practice will be our kicker week in and week out. We compete in everything that we do in our football program and the placekicker is no different.”

(On tracking the speed and distance of Jalen Hurd)
“He is one of our fastest players, from game speed repetitions, that is one of the things from our sports science department we really track, the amount of miles that we spend each and every day. It is really amazing when you think of it, what the bodies of these young kids go through each and everyday with practice. That is why with rest, recovery and nutrition, hydration, the training room with Jason McVeigh, all of those are critical pillars of your football program. We spend a lot of time in the sports science end of things.”

Will Arkansas State exploit Vols’ inexperienced offensive line?

Tennessee hosts Sun Belt contender Arkansas State

Tennessee hosts Sun Belt contender Arkansas State

by: Ryan Shannon

After an impressive 38-7 win over Utah State, Butch Jones’ Tennessee football team faces a new challenge– moving on.

In his post-game press conference, Jones said, ” The next evolution of this football team is how can we handle this (win), put it to rest, come to work tomorrow with a short work week versus a very good quality of opponent, a very good football team, again, that knows how to win in Arkansas State.”

The Vols will host the 2013 Sun Belt runner-up Arkansas State Red Wolves (1-0) Saturday at noon.  Saturday will mark the second meeting between the two schools– the first coming in 2007 in a game dominated by Erik Ainge and the Vols offense, resulting in a 48-27 Tennessee win.

The Red Wolves have experienced the most instability a team could possibly have on the sidelines over the past three seasons. Three different head coaches (five if you count interim head coaches) have walked the sidelines for Arkansas State for three straight seasons, but the Red Wolves think they finally have a coach who will be in Jonesboro, Arkansas, for a while in Blake Anderson. Anderson, who was previously the offensive coordinator at North Carolina, was hired by Arkansas State in December. A-State has made improvements to its facilities in hopes of keeping its new head coach.

Anderson, like Butch Jones, has the job of replacing several key players, especially on the offensive side of the ball.

Offense

Arkansas State’s offense should look pretty familiar to Tennessee. Anderson’s offense features many of the same sets as Butch Jones and Mike Bajakian’s offense. The Red Wolves almost exclusively line up in the shotgun formation and run a lot of read option. The main difference between the two offenses is that, much like Utah State, A-State’s offense is quarterback centric.

The Red Wolves offense only returns four starters, but the largely inexperienced has gotten off to a good start so far this season.

Junior Freddi Knighten is set for his first season as starting quarterback for the Red Wolves. The dual-threat quarterback began his 2014 season with 219 passing yards and 104 rushing yards in a 37-10 win against FCS Montana State. He is a Chuckie Keeton type quarterback, with a heavier emphasis on running the ball. He has yet to prove himself as a capable passer against a formidable opponent, so it may be tough for him to find a rhythm against Tennessee’s talented secondary.

However, Knighten does have some talented options at the wide receiver position. Tres Houston and J.D. McKissic are Knighten’s top targets and have high play-making ability. Knighten often looks to get them the ball quickly, either on short passes or quick screens. Down the field, tight end Darion Griswold is a frequent target for Knighten.

Knighten is the Red Wolves’ leading rusher, but Michael Gordon and Johnston White will also see a lot of carries. Gordon gained 68 yards on just seven carries in week one, while White and Terrance Hollingsworth handled short-yardage situations. Gordon has good breakaway speed and can break off a big run if he gets to the corner. He and Knighten will look to give the Vols defense headaches on the read option.

On the offensive line, A-State returns only two of its regular starters from last season. The Tennessee defensive line, which gave Keeton and the Utah State offense problems all Sunday night, should be able to pressure Knighten and register multiple sacks on Saturday.

Defense

The Red Wolves defense is also similar to that of the Vols. They run a 4-3 defense, featuring a ball-hawking secondary.

That secondary is anchored by junior Rocky Hayes, who led the team in interceptions and pass breakups last season. He already registered his first interception Saturday against Montana State. Safeties Chris Humes and Charleston Girley will, not only, look to disrupt Justin Worley’s passes, but they will also be heavily involved in rush defense and blitzes.

The linebacking corps is equally experienced and impressive. Senior middle linebacker Qushaun Lee accounted for 97.5 tackles last season, nearly 15% of the team’s total tackles. On the outside, sophomore Xavier Woodson leads the way. Last week, Woodson accounted for a team-leading six solo tackles.

Arkansas State lost several starters on the defensive line, but their replacements are far from inexperienced. Returning starting defensive end Chris Stone is joined by Dexter Blackmon and Charles Alexander who have both already affected the opposing quarterback and running backs this season. They should prevent a healthy challenge for the Vols’ inexperienced offensive line, which struggled against Utah State.

Key Matchups

Tennessee coverage team vs. Arkansas State returners. On top of receiving duties, Arkansas State’s J.D. McKissic is also a threat in the punt and kick return game. McKissic returned a kick for a touchdown last season and averaged 8.5 yards per punt return. If not McKissic, freshman Blaise Taylor will return kick. Taylor is the son of Arkansas State cornerbacks coach and serial NCAA rules violator Trooper Taylor. Blaise Taylor returned a kick for 38 yards on Saturday.

Tennessee offensive line vs. Arkansas State front seven. The only negative takeaway from Tennessee’s win against Utah State was its running game, largely due to poor offensive line play. The offensive line has an opportunity Saturday to show improvement and learn to play as a unit. Collectively, Tennessee’s primary rushers Marlin Lane and Jalen Hurd averaged only 3.4 yards per carry against a depleted Utah State front seven. For the Vols to stand the test of the upcoming SEC schedule, the offensive line must improve.

Prediction

The only reason Tennessee should struggle in this game is if they overlook the Red Wolves, and Butch Jones will not allow that. The players are buying everything Jones is selling right now, so look for the Vols to go into Saturday’s game focused and excited for an opportunity to improve.

Tennessee wins 41-17.

The Vols should finish week two with a perfect 2-0 record for the fourth consecutive season, setting up one of week three’s most exciting games, Tennessee at Oklahoma.
