Is the Bible historically accurate? (Part 19)

The Bible maintains several characteristics that prove it is from God. One of those is the fact that the Bible is accurate in every one of its details. The field of archaeology brings to light this amazing accuracy.

The Bible maintains several characteristics that prove it is from God. One of those is the fact that the Bible is accurate in every one of its details. The field of archaeology brings to light this amazing accuracy

From time to time you will read articles in the Arkansas press by  such writers as  John Brummett, Max Brantley and Gene Lyons that poke fun at those that actually believe the Bible is historically accurate when in fact the Bible is backed up by many archaeological facts. The Book of Mormon is blindly accepted even though archaeology has disproven many of the facts that are claimed by it. For instance, glass windows did not exist in North America when they said they did.

The Book of Mormon describes that the Jaredite people were familiar with the concept of “windows” near the time of the Biblical Tower of Babel (presumably circa 2000 BC.) and that they specifically avoided crafting windows for lighting in their covered seagoing vessels because the windows would be “dashed in pieces” during the ocean voyage.[91] However, the earliest known production of glass dates to 3500 BC in Egypt and Mesopotamia, in the form of opaque beads.[92] The earliest known production of transparent glass panes is much more recent, dating to the 11th century AD in Germany[93] which is many hundreds of years after the conclusion of the Book of Mormon record.

Qumran Jar (Dead Sea Scrolls)
Qumran Jar (Dead Sea Scrolls)
Did the Dead Sea Scrolls actually contain Old Testament scrolls written hundreds of years before the time of Jesus?

This painting is of the Qumran Jar which contained the Scroll of Isaiah, one of the hundreds of scrolls discovered in caves around the area of Qumran, on the northwest shore of the Dead Sea in Israel. The most important fact is that there were copies of the Books of the Bible dating back a hundred years before Jesus was born. This means that hundreds of prophecies about Jesus were amazingly accurate. In fact the Old Testament Book that testifies most to the life and death of the Messiah is the Book of Isaiah, which an entire scroll was discovered.

The discovery began in 1948 and became known as the Dead Sea Scrolls. What is most significant about these scrolls is that they contain many of the Jewish documents known to Christians as the Old Testament. Before this discovery the oldest copies of Biblical documents of the Old Testament were from the Masoretic time, around the 9th century A.D., because the Jewish scribes took careful measures in copying documents, numbering them, and destroying the originals. The Dead Sea Scrolls date back to at least the 2nd century B.C. making them important in the study of Biblical Archaeology. This is especially important to Christians because it puts hundreds of Old Testament prophecies about Jesus, at least 2 centuries before the events took place.

Isaiah 53:5-7 “But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.”

Matthew 21:42 – “Jesus saith unto them, Did ye never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner: this is the Lord’s doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes? “

John 10:35 “the Scripture cannot be broken”

John 10:34 “Jesus answered them, “Is it not written in your law..”

2 Tim 3:16-17 “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.”

I read this today and I wanted to pass it along. It is my family’s practice to read chapter of Proverbs per day. We always read the chapter that corresponds to the day of the month. For instance, if it is May 8th then we will read chapter 8. One of the verses that caught my attention in today’s reading were 10 and 11: Choose my instruction instead of silver…nothing you can desire can compare with her.” That about sums it up. There is nothing we can desire that comes close to God’s wisdom. I have told my kids, “If I offer 1 million dollars every morning to get up at 6am and study the Book of Proverbs for an hour would you do it?” They all responded, “Yes!_  However, according to these verses it is more valuable to you if you get God’s wisdom than worldly riches.  Below is a portion from Steven Camp’s blog concerning the principles you can get from Proverbs.

WORK HARD AND DON’T BE LAZY
…20 practical principles from Proverbs – by Dr. S. Lance Quinn

undefined

I saw this wonderful article recommended on the Grace To You twitter just yesterday. It is written by a long time friend of mine, Dr. S. Lance Quinn. Lance is the senior pastor of the Bible Church of Little Rock. He is a gifted Bible expositor, teacher, and pastor of God’s people.

He displays uncommon wisdom and insight in the following post by extracting twenty biblical principles from the book of Proverbs encouraging us all to a life of productive God glorifying work in all the things of living and how to avoid the pull and tug of laziness. It ministered greatly to my own heart and trust it will to you as well.

1. Remember, working hard is first a mindset (and so is laziness).

2. Working hard and staying on task is a matter of self-control.

3. Get up early. Try to stand up right when the alarm clock goes off.

4. Do hard jobs first and easier jobs second; then you can have fun.

5. Love what you do as a vocation, regardless of what it is. Ask God to grant His blessing and favor in your work (cf. the account of Joseph in Genesis 39).

6. Don’t try to make money by deceit or fraud. If you do, God will punish you, sooner or later.

7. Be honest with your employer about how much you work. If you’re lazily collecting a paycheck, that’s stealing.

8. Don’t work so much, however, that you need to re-introduce yourself to your family. Strive for a healthy balance between your work and your family life.

9. If you travel too much (according to your wife’s/family’s honest, loving assessment), seek to curb your travel, if possible. Perhaps another position would provide greater harmony in your home.

10. If your wife is regularly wondering how the bills are going to be paid, and you’re not taking initiative to lead, confess your failure in leadership and take control of your family finances.

11. Treat your work (house cleaning, school work, or whatever it is) as though you will reap a harvest from your labors.

12. Don’t work only in order to receive. Rather, find satisfaction in simply doing good work for God and men.

13. Lazy people often assume that others owe them a handout (whether they’ve worked hard or not). Don’t fall into an entitlement mentality.

14. When you are asked to serve in some way, don’t attempt to take the path of least resistance (because of laziness).

15. Consider how much more would be accomplished for the kingdom of Christ if you worked as hard in ministry as you do for a paycheck.

16. Consider how your employer would evaluate you if his assessment were based on your work ethic in ministry. (Would you be fired?)

17. If you are a lazy person, or if you tend toward laziness in certain areas of your life, confess your sin to God. Whether at home, at work, or in ministry, admit to God that you haven’t been working as hard as you should (He knows already); and ask Him to cleanse you from sin.

18. Abandoning laziness and growing in diligence means you must be controlled by the Holy Spirit. Here are some practical steps you can take:

a. Ask the Spirit to make you a hard worker for God.
b. Read, re-read, and even memorize the proverbs that pertain to both laziness and work.
c. Trust God to overcome any bad habits you’ve developed regarding work and diligence.
d. When you are tempted to be lazy, seek the Spirit’s help in prayer and remind yourself what the Word of God teaches.

19. Show how the Proverbs on diligence and laziness are important by reading them to your family and then applying the biblical principles. Discuss with your family how you can hold one another accountable to be diligent workers for God and men.

20. Ask God to give you opportunities to become a hard worker, and then look for Him to answer in every realm of your life (home, work, school, ministry, etc.).

Mike Huckabee to Osama bin Laden: “Welcome to Hell” (Part 5)

Mike Huckabee

Picture of former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee

Adrian Rogers – Crossing God’s Deadline. Part 1

John Brummett in his article “Huckabee speaks for bad guy below,” Arkansas News Bureau, May 5, 2011 had to say:

Are we supposed to understand and accept that Mike Huckabee is in hell where he has official duties as a greeter, welcoming Osama bin-Laden?

Let us resist the evil urge to say it all makes sense — that the Big Huckster would be in that location and that Lucifer would have tabbed him for special responsibilities on account of his gift of gab.

But no one — absolutely no one — could possibly compete in the grandstanding sweepstakes with the tacky Floridian, meaning the second-favorite son of Hope, Mike Huckabee.

“Welcome to hell,” Huckabee presumed to say to this dead body, revealing himself, again, as more a tabloid headline than a responsible communicator.

Huckabee opened his altogether superfluous public statement by saying it was most unusual to celebrate death. So then he proceeded to celebrate death, apparently licensed by his own pre-emptive acknowledgment of the questionable taste that he was about to display.

That’s a little like the first three paragraphs of this column — saying something tacky by the trick of asserting that it would be inappropriate to say the thing being said. Those paragraphs were written only for ironic effect, you see, to make the point of applying Huckabee’s device to himself.

We all suspect strongly, of course, that bin-Laden will spend eternity in hell, whatever his form and whatever hell’s. But we should not embrace a politician’s seeking electoral gain by dictating and announcing after-life dispositions. Those we should defer to a higher power, whose divine authority no mortal man should dare usurp, even for TV ratings or votes, or both.

I really am uncomfortable with all this kind of lighthearted talk about hell.  Jason Tolbert mentions this same concern in his article yesterday, “American pride; Christian mercy,” Arkansas News Bureau:

However, in spite of the jubilation, some of the reaction was troubling.

“Welcome to hell, bin Laden,” Mike Huckabee wrote on his website last Sunday evening.

Wait a second. A minister of the gospel of Christ is welcoming someone to hell? Something about that just does not feel right.

The gospel I believe teaches that Christ died for all, the good and bad. It teaches that Christ’s redemption is strong enough to save the very worst person on the face of the earth. I think bin Laden meets that definition.

God’s redemption is much stronger than the human mind can comprehend. I can’t forgive bin Laden; only God can do that. I take satisfaction and flag-waving American pride that he was met with justice. But I take no pleasure in the fact that he rejected the love of God and never turned from a life of fanatical hate, leading to his ultimate eternal fate.

I was reminded last week of another fanatical, hate-filled terrorist. This religious leader of his day hated Christians so much that he made it his goal to see them stopped and executed, which he watched and supervised with glee.

He became the apostle Paul after Christ changed his life. He went on to write half the New Testament and was perhaps the greatest missionary of all time.

My point is this. Let us rejoice in justice but let those of us who profess to be Christians remember that we are driven not by hate but by love. And let us tell the world that God’s love is big enough to save even those we hate the most.

The traditional Christian view of hell is a very serious doctrine.

The next few days I will be posting portions of the article “Hell:The Horrible Choice,” by Patrick Zukeran of Probe Ministries. Here is the fourth installment:

How Can a Loving God Send People to Hell?

Recently I was in a enjoying a pleasant discussion with an atheist named Gus. After answering most of his objections against Christianity, he paused for a moment of contemplation. He then leaned over the table and said, “I find it hard to believe in a God of love who says, ‘Love me or I will throw you into the fire!'”

This statement represents a common misunderstanding. God does not send anyone to hell; people choose to go there.

I explained that God is a loving God, and His earnest desire is that all turn from sin and receive His gift of eternal life. 2 Peter 3:9 states, “The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.” God desires all to be saved and has made the way possible by sending His son to die in our place. He invites everyone to accept His free gift of eternal life through Christ.

Since God’s desire is that all be saved and He has made this possible for all men, God cannot bear the blame for people going to hell. People go to hell because they knowingly choose to reject His love. C. S. Lewis said, “There are only two kinds of people in the end: those who say to God, ‘Thy will be done,’ and those to whom God says, in the end, ‘Thy will be done.’ “{4}

God’s love also keeps Him from imposing His will on individuals. If a person does not want to be with God in this lifetime, He will not force that person to be with Him for all eternity. In other words, the door of hell is locked from the inside.

After a brief moment, Gus asked, “Do people really have a choice since the Bible states that we are all born sinners and cannot help but sin?” I acknowledged that we are born in sin (Psalm 51) and have a bent to sin. However, our sin nature does not force us to sin. We are sinners and it is inevitable that we will disobey God. However, we can avoid sinning and often do so because disobedience to God involves a choice we make. We can choose otherwise. In a similar way although we are on the road to destruction, we can decide to get off that road and choose life.

What about predestination, some may ask? Does that not negate one’s ability to choose? There are various views on this doctrine but it does not negate our responsibility to repent. God holds us accountable for our decisions, and this responsibility implies the ability to respond. Although we as finite beings may not fully comprehend this doctrine, that does not excuse us from the choice we must all make about Christ.

The sad news is that all who go to hell could avoid going there, but they make a horrible choice.

Balanced Budget Amendment the answer? Boozman says yes, Pryor no, Part 22(Milton Friedman tells us how to stay free Part 1))

Ep. 10 – How to Stay Free [6/7]. Milton Friedman’s Free to Choose (1980)

Photo detail

Steve Brawner in his article “Safer roads and balanced budgets,” Arkansas News Bureau, April 13, 2011, noted:

The disagreement is over the solutions — on what spending to cut; what taxes to raise (basically none ever, according to Boozman); whether or not to enact a balanced budget amendment (Boozman says yes; Pryor no); and on what policies would promote the kind of economic growth that would make this a little easier.

I am going to continue this series and mainly include the opinions of Milton Friedman concerning these matters. Today I have included some comments from Milton Friedman from his Film Series “Free to Choose: Episode 10 How to Stay Free,” which addresses several issues concerning how to control our spending.  This is part 1 of this series concerning Milton Friedman’s thoughts from this video clip.

Boozman Presses Balanced Budget in Maiden Senate address

Arkansas News Bureau

U.S. Sen. John Boozman, R-Ark., used his maiden speech on the Senate floor today to call for passage of a balanced budget amendment.

“We are at a crossroads in our country,” said the freshman Republican from Rogers. “The ‘tax, borrow, spend’ philosophy is not creating jobs; it’s only creating more debt for our children and grandchildren.”

Boozman has signed on as a co-sponsor to a resolution introduced last month by Sen. Richard Shelby, R-Ala., seeking a constitutional amendment requiring a balanced budget not to exceed 20 percent of Gross Domestic Product, a level that has been exceeded since 1941.

Shelby’s resolution, which he has introduced in every session of Congress since 1987, would exempt the balanced budget during wartime.

“Imagine what the country would look like if it had passed when he first proposed it. Now, more than ever, it is an idea that’s time has come,” Boozman said.

Boozman, who was sworn into office in January, spoke for the first time Monday on the Senate floor, following a Senate tradition that freshmen wait several months before delivering their “maiden” address.

Dressed in a blue suit, Boozman stood at his Senate desk and read his prepared address to a nearly empty chamber. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell listened from his desk, legs crossed and head tilted toward Boozman through the speech that lasted less than 15 minutes.

About 150 people, on public tours of the U.S. Capitol, sat quietly in the gallery above the Senate floor. The press gallery was nearly empty save for a single seated reporter and another who walked in briefly during the address.

Aside from calling for fiscal restraint, Boozman offered how inspired he is by the “service, dedication and commitment” of the Arkansas politicians who preceded him such as William Sebastian, who served in the Senate from 1848 until 1861.

“Growing up in Fort Smith, in Sebastian County, we were taught at an early age about William Sebastian. At thirty-six, he was the youngest senator in the 30th U.S. Congress after leading an already distinguished career as a cotton farmer, judge and state legislator,” Boozman said.

Boozman also spoke about the need for the Arkansas delegation to continue its tradition of working together — across party lines — for the good of the state.

“I really believe that our delegation working together will be able to make a difference for the people of Arkansas,” he said.

After the speech, McConnell congratulated Boozman for delivering his first address.

“I was particularly interested in the history lesson of all those who served from Arkansas,” McConnell said.

Boozman left the floor looking a little relieved.

“That’s over,” he said.

Boozman confessed to having a few pre-speech jitters given the weight of Senate tradition.

“It’s a big deal and a tremendous honor to be in that situation,” he said.

Ep. 10 – How to Stay Free [7/7]. Milton Friedman’s Free to Choose (1980)

Senator Pryor asks for Spending Cut Suggestions! Here are a few!(Part 43)

Senator Mark Pryor wants our ideas on how to cut federal spending. Take a look at this video clip below:

Senator Pryor has asked us to send our ideas to him at cutspending@pryor.senate.gov and I have done so in the past and will continue to do so in the future. Here are a few more I just emailed to him myself at 7am CST on May 8, 2011.

Senator Rand Paul on Feb 7, 2011 wrote the article “A Modest $500 Billion Proposal: My spending cuts would keep 85% of government funding and not touch Social Security,” Wall Street Journal and he observed:

Here are some of his specific suggestions:

Transportation Security Administration: Reduce 40 Percent

Following the 9/11 attacks, the Transportation Safety Administration has provided the majority of airport security screeners across the country. A number of airports however, (17 in a recent count) have replaced TSA screeners with private contractors. Kansas City International Airport was the first airport to use private screeners as opposed to the TSA. Kansas City Airport director Mark VanLoh said in an NPR article, “In my opinion, these contract employees – they’re not federal employees; they’re not guaranteed a job for life. If they don’t meet performance goals, or maybe they’re consistently rude, or maybe they miss objects that go through the machine, they are terminated.”

GAO has stated concerning the use of private screeners “The private screening under federal supervision works and performs statistically significantly better, so our main purpose here is in getting better screening and better performance, not to mention that we can get better cost for the taxpayer.”

Currently TSA has over 67,000 employees across the United States and screeners have plans to unionize, which can and will drive up costs to the American taxpayer.

In 2005, The Washington Post published a story, “The High Cost of a Rush to Security,” a small taste of the tremendous waste produced by the Transportation Security Administration at DHS:

TSA Lost Control of Over $300 Million Spent by Contractor to Hire Airport Screeners After 9/11

By Scott Higham and Robert O’Harrow Jr.

Washington Post Staff Writers

Thursday, June 30, 2005

The money was spent in the name of improving security at the nation’s airports:

· $526.95 for one phone call from the Hyatt Regency O’Hare in Chicago to Iowa City.

· $1,180 for 20 gallons of Starbucks Coffee — $3.69 a cup — at the Santa Clara Marriott in California.

· $1,540 to rent 14 extension cords at $5 each per day for three weeks at the Wyndham Peaks

Resort and Golden Door Spa in Telluride, Colo.

· $8,100 for elevator operators at the Marriott Marquis in Manhattan.

· $5.4 million claimed for nine months’ salary for the chief executive of an “event logistics” firm that

received a contract before it was incorporated and went out of business after the contract ended.

Those details are contained in a federal audit that calls into question $303 million of the $741 million spent to assess and hire airport passenger screeners for the newly created Transportation Security Administration after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. The audit, along with interviews with people involved in the passenger-screener contract, paints a rare and detailed portrait of how officials at the fledgling agency lost control of the spending in the pell-mell rush to hire 60,000 screeners to meet a one-year congressional deadline.

The audit, performed by the Defense Contract Audit Agency at the TSA’s behest, spotlights scores of expenses: $20-an-hour temporary workers billed to the government at $48 per hour, subcontractors who signed out $5,000 in cash at a time with no supporting documents, $377,273.75 in unsubstantiated longdistance phone calls, $514,201 to rent tents that flooded in a rainstorm, $4.4 million in “no show” fees for job candidates who did not appear for tests.

The audit faulted the prime contractor, NCS Pearson Inc., which was hired by the TSA to test, interview, fingerprint, medically evaluate and pre-certify the candidates. The audit said Pearson failed to properly justify costs and improperly awarded subcontracts without competitive bidding. The audit also said the company demonstrated a “lack of management or oversight of subcontractors.”

One of the audit’s key revelations is that a decision to move the hiring process from Pearson’s 925 U.S. private assessment centers to 150 hotels and other meeting facilities added at least $343 million to the cost of the contract, according to an estimate by Pearson. The company said it was ordered to make the change by the TSA, which said it made the decision in collaboration with Pearson.

The decision also reduced the time Pearson had to evaluate and hire 60,000 screeners from 32 weeks to 14 because the TSA delayed the schedule, the company said. Pearson later said the decision forced the company to hire a small army of subcontractors, whose invoices and charges are at the heart of the spending highlighted in the audit.

“It was a waste of taxpayer’s money,” said Patrick Cowan, of Denver, who supervised hiring efforts for Pearson at 43 sites in the central part of the country. “There was abuse of the taxpayers’ trust. We didn’t get the bang for our buck.”

Al Qaeda confirms Osama bin Laden is dead

undefined

Not only do we have the word of President Obama that Osama bin Laden is dead, but now Al Qaeda sources have confirmed it.

CNN reported on May 6, 2011:

Al Qaeda released a statement on jihadist forums Friday confirming the death of its leader, Osama bin Laden, according to SITE Intelligence Group, which monitors Islamist websites.

The development comes days after U.S. troops killed bin Laden in a raid on a compound in the Pakistani city of Abbottabad.

The statement, translated by SITE, lauded the late militant, threatened to take action against the United States, and urged Pakistanis to “rise up and revolt.”

Bin Laden’s death will serve as a “curse that chases the Americans and their agents, and goes after them inside and outside their countries,” the message said.

Prince William and Kate moved in together about a year ago. In this clip above the commentator suggested that maybe Prince Charles and Princess Diana would not have divorced if they had lived together before marriage. Actually Diana was a virgin, and it was Charles’ uncle (Louis Mountbatten) that gave him the advice that he should seek to marry a virgin.

I really do wish Kate and William success in their marriage. I hope they truly are committed to each other, and if they are then the result will be a marriage that lasts their whole lifetime. Nevertheless, I do not think it is best to live together before marriage like they did, and I writing this series to help couples see how best to prepare for marriage.

Whether you call it “test-driving marriage,” “living together,” “shacking up” or “living in sin,” cohabitation is on the rise. Sadly, so are the consequences of sharing a home without the commitment of marriage.

So, what do you do if you’re convinced that living together is/was a bad idea, after all?(There are 5 things you should do and the first 2 were in last post and the last 3 today.)

  1. If the person you’re living with disagrees with changing your relationship, is he or she really worth having anyway? Ask, “So you love me enough to live with me, but not enough to keep dating me and work toward a lifelong commitment together?” If that’s the case, ask yourself, “What kind of commitment is that?”
  2. Get some support. It’s probable this won’t be an easy transition. Doing the right thing rarely is. Whether you’re faced with the loss of a lover who wasn’t willing to stick around after you moved out, or you’re just going through sexual withdrawal (because he was willing to make the change with you and now you’re abstaining), it will be easier to honor your new way of relating sex-free if you have the encouragement of other people. Spend time with couples who agree with your decision to live apart until marriage. Seek out the input of a pastor or other trusted adviser who will reinforce your decision. Don’t go it alone. The temptation is too great.
  3. Get married. If your reason for moving out is to improve your chances for a lifelong marriage, why not get started? If you were serious enough to live together, you should be serious enough to seal the deal. Talk about getting married. If he/she is willing, find a premarital counselor. The best place to start the search is at church. Going through a class together should help you make a wise decision about your suitability for marriage to each other. And if you’re not meant to be, why delay the inevitable. Life’s too short to waste precious time with the wrong partner.

Senator Pryor asks for Spending Cut Suggestions! Here are a few!(Part 42)

Senator Mark Pryor wants our ideas on how to cut federal spending. Take a look at this video clip below:

Senator Pryor has asked us to send our ideas to him at cutspending@pryor.senate.gov and I have done so in the past and will continue to do so in the future. Here are a few more I just emailed to him myself at 11:24pm CST.

Senator Rand Paul on Feb 7, 2011 wrote the article “A Modest $500 Billion Proposal: My spending cuts would keep 85% of government funding and not touch Social Security,” Wall Street Journal and he observed:

Here are some of his specific suggestions:

Homeland Security

Agency/Program Funding Level Savings % Decrease Homeland Security $30.958 $23.765 B 43%

The Department Homeland Security was created after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, and since then has been plagued by waste, fraud, and extensive bureaucracy. The proposal transfers the United States Coast Guard to the Department of Defense, reduces Transportation Security Administration funding, and decreases remaining program funding to FY2008 levels

Take a look at videos captured at Osama bin Laden’s compound

Osama bin Laden ‘Home Videos’ Released

Videos were seized during the raid on the Bin Laden compound.
05/07/2011
Newly released videos show Osama bin Laden inside his hideout, watching himself on television and rehearsing for terrorist propaganda videos.  Kimberly Dozier, and Lolita C. Baldor of the The Associated Press reported today:

The videos, released by U.S. intelligence officials Saturday, were offered as further proof that Navy SEALs killed the world’s most wanted terrorist this week. But they also served to show bin Laden as vain, someone obsessed with his portrayal by the world’s media.

One of the movies shows bin Laden, wrapped in a brown blanket and holding a remote control, flipping back and forth between clips of himself. The small television was perched on top of a desk with wires running to a nearby cable or control box.

In another, he has apparently dyed and neatly trimmed his beard for the filming of a propaganda video.

The videos were seized from bin Laden’s compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan. Officials said the clips shown to reporters were just part of the largest collection of senior terrorist materials ever collected. The evidence seized during the raid also includes phone numbers and documents that officials hope will help break the back of the organization behind the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

For years, when it was assumed that bin Laden was living in Pakistan’s rugged, mountainous tribal region, officials assumed bin Laden might not be able to get real-time news. After the CIA discovered bin Laden’s suburban compound, they realized that a satellite dish provided a television feed to bin Laden’s compound.

Osama bin Laden had plan for attack on 9/11/11

The Associated Press reported on May 5, 2011:

Some of the first information gleaned from Osama bin Laden’s compound indicates al-Qaida considered attacking U.S. trains on the upcoming anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks. But counterterrorism officials say they believe the planning never got beyond the initial phase and have no recent intelligence pointing to an active plot for such an attack.

As of February 2010, the terror organization was considering plans to attack the U.S. on the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. One idea outlined in handwritten notes was to tamper with an unspecified U.S. rail track so that a train would fall off the track at a valley or a bridge, according to a joint FBI and Homeland Security bulletin sent to law enforcement officials around the country Thursday. The al-Qaida planners noted that if they attacked a train by tilting it, the plan would only succeed once because the tilting would be spotted the next time.

The warning, obtained by The Associated Press, was marked for “official use only.”

Information on the train plot appears to be the first widely circulated intelligence pulled from the raid this week on bin Laden’s secret compound in Pakistan. After killing the terror leader and four of his associates, Navy SEALs confiscated a treasure trove of computers, DVDs and documents from the home where U.S. officials believe the al-Qaida chief had been hiding for up to six years.

Other intelligence information gathered at the compound represented a terrorist wish list but has revealed no specific plan so far, a U.S. official said. He said documents indicated a desire to hit the U.S. with large-scale attacks in major cities and on key dates such as anniversaries and holidays. But there was no sign those plans were anything more than ambitions. The U.S. official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss intelligence matters.

Intelligence analysts have been reviewing and translating the material, looking for information about pending plots and other terror connections. Even before the raid, intelligence officials for years have warned that al-Qaida is interested in attacking major U.S. cities on holidays, anniversaries and other dates that are uniquely American.

“While it is clear that there was some level of planning for this type of operation in February 2010, we have no recent information to indicate an active ongoing plot to target transportation and no information on possible locations or specific targets,” the warning Thursday said.

The FBI and Homeland Security told local officials to be on the lookout for clips or spikes missing from train tracks, packages left on or near the tracks and other indications that a train could be vulnerable.

Homeland Security spokesman Matt Chandler said, “This alleged al-Qaida plotting is based on initial reporting, which is often misleading or inaccurate and subject to change.” He said the government has no plans to issue an official terror alert because of it.

An official with the Association of American Railroads said the organization has received warnings from the federal government and is sharing the information throughout the railroad network. “We are always making sure that the system is run as safely and securely as possible,” the organization’s spokeswoman, Patricia Reilly, said.

U.S. officials have disrupted other terror plots that targeted rails, including a 2009 plan to blow up the New York City subway system.

On Monday the FBI and Homeland Security warned law enforcement officials around the country that bin Laden’s death could inspire retaliatory attacks in the U.S., and terrorists not yet known to the intelligence community could be operating inside the country. The transportation sector – including U.S. rails – remain attractive targets for terrorists.

Satellite pictures of Osama bin Laden’s custom-made hideout in Abbottabad, Northern Pakistan, were released by the US Department of Defence, providing further detail of the compound where the al-Qaida leader had allegedly been hiding for years.

Candidate #1,MN Gov Tim Pawlenty: Republican Presidential Hopefuls (Part G)Did he win first debate in Greenville, SC May 5, 2011?

First GOP Presidential Debate Part 1

The first GOP presidential debate for 2012 was held in South Carolina the evening of May 5, 2011. Participants were Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX), Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty, businessman Herman Cain, former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum, and former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson.

May 5th in Greenville, SC was the first Republican Presidential Debate. John Fund commented that he thought MN Governor Tim Pawlenty did very well in the first debate.

In the article “First GOP Debate Introduces Pawlenty to Nation,” RollCall.com, May 5, 2011, Christina Bellantoni wrote:

Former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty used the first Republican presidential debate — and the absence of major contenders — to showcase his credentials, deflect criticism of unpopular positions and introduce himself to voters.

The most newsworthy element of the Fox News-hosted forum held Thursday night in Greenville, S.C., might have been the number of likely candidates missing from the stage. The debate was the first of the primary season, but top contenders Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich skipped it. Other potential candidates — including Mitch Daniels, Jon Huntsman, Donald Trump and Sarah Palin — stayed home.

Former Sen. Rick Santorum (Pa.); Rep. Ron Paul (Texas); former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson; and Herman Cain, who has never held public office, appeared with Pawlenty in Thursday’s debate.

One challenge Pawlenty faces is a lack of name recognition nationally, and he used the evening to tell his personal story and introduce himself to the voters tuning in to the still-forming race for the first time.

Pawlenty was put on the defensive when moderators presented him with a 2008 radio spot he recorded favoring a cap on greenhouse gases. The former governor told the audience he “made a mistake” and no longer supports a cap-and-trade system. “Nobody’s perfect,” he said.

Perhaps aware that he was the frontrunner onstage and that the evening carried low stakes, Pawlenty repeatedly detailed his record and reminded voters that he was from a working-class background. “I saw the face of job loss and economic worry in my hometown and even in my own family,” Pawlenty said.

The former governor mentioned several times that he grew up in a meat-packing town and worked in a labor union for seven years. “I understand this issue,” Pawlenty said when asked about the recent labor fight in Wisconsin. “We’re not against hardworking men and women. It’s not about bashing unions, it’s about being pro-job.”

He added that he balanced budgets over his eight years as governor and that he has been to Iraq five times and Afghanistan three times.

At one point in the debate, Pawlenty said, “As I get better known, I’m getting more and more support.”

In a testament to Pawlenty’s stature among his rivals on stage, the Democratic National Committee’s first two “fact-check” emails about the event were targeted at Pawlenty.

The moderators also asked Pawlenty about the health care plan Romney implemented during his time as governor of Massachusetts, but the Minnesotan declined to go after his rival. “I’m not going to pick on him,” he said.

Instead, Pawlenty mentioned Barack Obama’s January 2008 speech after his victory in the Iowa presidential caucuses. Obama had pledged to pass a health care program that would earn support from Republicans. “He broke that promise,” Pawlenty said.

Santorum, meanwhile, used most of his answers to sharply critique Obama on health care, spending and foreign policy.

The candidates discussed waterboarding, with Pawlenty and Santorum saying they would support the practice depending on the circumstances. Santorum credited such “enhanced interrogation techniques” for enabling the government to find al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden.

Near that point in the debate, an audience member shouted, “It’s illegal!”

All of the candidates on the stage, with the exception of long-shot Cain, said they would have released the photos of bin Laden after he was killed.

Pawlenty praised Obama for making “tough decisions and being decisive” when it came to the bin Laden mission but added, “That moment is not the sum total of America’s foreign policy.”

Santorum credited President George W. Bush for bin Laden’s killing and said Obama has done right when he has continued Bush’s policies. He said Obama has gone wrong when he has set out on his own, and he specifically criticized the president’s handling of the political protests in Iran.

Paul, an anti-war libertarian with a grass-roots following, called for troops to be withdrawn from Afghanistan. He said that instead of spending “$1.5 trillion a year on our militarism,” the government should spend that money “back at home.”

Moderators asked Paul whether he was threatened by potential rival Rep. Michele Bachmann’s strength with the tea party. “She’s not here tonight,” Paul quipped about the Minnesota Republican.

Paul repeated his stance from his 2008 presidential campaign that he supports gay marriage. “The government should just be out of it,” Paul said. “They’ve caused more trouble than necessary.”

He earned applause for his stance on legalizing drugs, including heroin.

Moderators asked Santorum whether his desire to make English the nation’s official language could alienate Hispanic voters. The former Senator said he does not apologize for his position and said he believes it empowers immigrants to be integrated into society.

He also went after Obama for failing to pass immigration reform, given there was a solid Democratic majority on Capitol Hill during the first year of his presidency. “This is a political issue for the president,” Santorum said. “He’s playing political games with a very important group of people in America.”

Cain, the former CEO of Godfather’s Pizza, has been making the rounds courting tea party activists and said onstage that he supports a fair tax plan. He won the focus group hosted by Frank Luntz on Fox News following the debate.

Johnson is best known for his position favoring the legalization of marijuana, which he said he backed because it made sense for his state’s bottom line given high incarceration rates. “Everything was a cost-benefit analysis,” Johnson said. “Control it, regulate it, tax it.”

The Palmetto State will host a key early presidential primary in early 2012. No Republican nominee has claimed that prize without winning the South Carolina primary.
