Review of Woody Allen’s latest movie “Blue Jasmine” Part 13

 

I have spent a lot of time talking about Woody Allen films on this blog and looking at his worldview. He has a hopelessmeaningless, nihilistic worldview that believes we are going to turn to dust and there is no afterlife. Even though he has this view he has taken the opportunity to look at the weaknesses of his own secular view. I salute him for doing that. That is why I have returned to his work over and over and presented my own Christian worldview as an alternative.

Also I have done over 30 posts on the historical characters mentioned in his film “Midnight in Paris.” (Salvador Dali, Ernest Hemingway,T.S.Elliot,  Cole Porter,Paul Gauguin,  Luis Bunuel, and Pablo Picasso were just a few of the characters.)

San Francisco has been good to Woody Allen, from his 1969 directing debut with “Take the Money and Run” to his lead turn in 1972′s “Play It Again, Sam,” and a long-overdue return visit provides just the shot of artistic adrenaline he needs in “Blue Jasmine.” It doesn’t hurt that this serious-minded but ruefully funny work is centered around a mesmerizing performance by Cate Blanchett as a neurotic Allen heroine for the ages, a desperate New York socialite who heads West after losing her husband and their ill-gotten fortune. Probing the allure of romantic fulfillment and upward mobility with rigor, emotional generosity and a pleasing sense of dramatic balance, this Sony Classics release won’t do “Midnight in Paris”-sized numbers, but solid critical response should pull in more than just the Woodman faithful.

Following the frivolities of “Midnight in Paris” and “To Rome With Love,” Allen makes an invigorating return to American soil with a meaty, fully realized drama that cleverly functions as both an update of “A Streetcar Named Desire” and a satire on One Percent excess. And while “Blue Jasmine” is rather less idyllic than the writer-director’s previous creative high point, “Vicky Cristina Barcelona,” it superficially recalls that 2008 comedy in charting the fortunes of two women, a blonde and a brunette, pursuing their very different goals in life. Yet Blanchett’s performance is so dominant in terms of screentime and emotional impact that the film succeeds as not only a virtuoso ensemble piece, but also an unflinchingly intimate study of the character in the title.

The fact that Jasmine sometimes still uses her birth name, Jeanette, provides an early clue that this is a woman with a talent for self-invention — someone who can’t help but delude herself and others, and who doesn’t mind turning a blind eye to those inconvenient realities that might threaten her life of privilege. That privilege has been yanked away from Jasmine as she arrives in San Francisco, evidently broke and single, and moves in with her sister, Ginger (Sally Hawkins).

That the girls were adopted from different sets of biological parents explains their lack of resemblance, in looks and temperament. While laid-back, free-spirited Ginger works at a supermarket, has two rowdy kids from a previous marriage, and is engaged to a macho, greasy-haired tough named Chili (Bobby Cannavale), Jasmine is clearly made of classier stuff, or so she thinks. Regular flashbacks reveal her life of luxury in the Hamptons with her businessman husband, Hal (Alec Baldwin), who turned out to be as chronically unfaithful to her as he was to his investors. Among the many victims of his Madoff-like schemes were Ginger and her then-husband, Augie (actor-comedian Andrew Dice Clay), who made the mistake of entrusting Hal with $200,000 in lottery winnings.

The contrast between past and present begins to feel almost unbearably cruel as Jasmine is forced to pull herself up by her bootstraps, not an easy task for someone accustomed to Jimmy Choos. Eventually she begins working as a receptionist for a lecherous dentist (Michael Stuhlbarg) and taking computer classes, the first steps toward a highly improbable career in interior design. Yet far from humbling or inspiring her, hard work seems to make her only more pinched, whiny and abrasive, and as she compulsively mixes martinis and Xanax, she becomes ever more critical of the easily contented Ginger and her “loser” boyfriend.

While the New York flashbacks occasionally veer toward overstatement, they convey more than mere backstory, providing a psychological entry point as Jasmine becomes more and more unglued with every painful reminder of what she’s lost. Quivering with barely repressed rage, at times muttering to herself as she stares blankly into the void, Jasmine instantly takes her place among the most dynamic female protagonists in the Allen oeuvre, which is no small feat. It’s a brilliantly bipolar piece of acting, bringing an almost Method rawness to the writer’s typically refined dialogue, and what gives Blanchett’s performance such force is how expertly she modulates her character’s mood swings: One minute she’s a pill-popping, bleary-eyed wreck, the next she’s a vision of radiant, sylphlike elegance (especially in an array of stunning outfits designed by Suzy Benzinger), cozying up to a handsome diplomat (Peter Sarsgaard) who may hold the key to her future.

It becomes clear that while Jasmine scarcely deserves her fantasy world of effortless, extravagant wealth, it’s a world she absolutely belongs to and thrives in. Our sympathies are artfully scrambled; we begin to root for this over-entitled, self-destructive shrew to find love and lucre in spite of herself, lending the story a certain train-wreck fascination as it barrels toward its bitterly ironic conclusion.

The script takes a similarly complex view of its secondary characters, and what gives “Blue Jasmine” its particular integrity is its acknowledgment that, despite their obvious differences in sophistication, taste and socioeconomic background, every one of these folks may have a point. Allen’s sense of class stratification here isn’t exactly nuanced, but his sympathies are more evenly distributed than usual, and he happily reveals more than one side to every personality, a strategy that helps bring out the best in a very fine cast.

Inclined as one might be to condescend to coarse, working-class Joes like Chili and Augie (the names here are especially pungent and evocative), the film duly acknowledges that these dudes are far more admirable than their upscale counterparts, a point that Cannavale and Clay (an especially offbeat and rewarding casting choice) underscore with their mouthy, big-hearted performances. The other male roles have been cast with similar care: Baldwin, back for more after “To Rome With Love,” is almost too persuasive as a Wall Street sleaze; Louis C.K. is likable as a guy who takes a particularly randy interest in Ginger; and Alden Ehrenreich makes a welcome appearance as Hal’s Ivy Leaguer son. But besides Blanchett, it’s Hawkins who leaves the strongest impression as the sensitive and sensible Ginger, deflecting her sister’s attacks with endless patience and the occasional well-deserved telling-off. It’s the less flashy of the two roles, but Hawkins inhabits it with a graceful, unshowy depth of feeling.

While Allen displays more interest than usual in the particulars of lower-income living and even deigns to usher some of his characters into the computer age, the result can’t help but feel at times like a somewhat cushy, elevated Woody-world fantasy of workaday existence. Even Ginger’s Mission District apartment, meant to seem cramped in comparison to Jasmine’s beachside estate, looks relatively spacious considering the location. Along similar lines, Javier Aguierresarobe’s sun-dappled lensing can’t help but show off San Francisco to great advantage, as the film makes time for a walk along Ocean Beach, an amble through Chinatown, and a brief, obligatory shot of the Golden Gate Bridge. The old jazz standard “Blue Moon” makes a poignant main theme for this tale of romantic longing.

EVERY WOODY ALLEN MOVIE – BLOGGING BANANAS

Do you know what? There are times when you can’t help but fall in love with a website. Mainly due to ‘it’ an ‘you’ sharing a common ground. Ideally it would be for the best if the website in question was pornographic in nature, and had some sort of stimulating incentive. Or else it could be about a Jewish comedian who wears glasses and makes very diverse movies. Hey! My mate Trevor knows what I’m talking about. If fact that’s what we were discussing just the other day, whilst in a brothel situated in a synagogue.The Woody Allen Collection

1) What set of circumstances led you to develop everywoodyallenmovie.com Trevor?  I have a pervasive need to tell people my opinions on things. Since I don’t have many friends, and those who do are tired of hearing me talk about things they don’t care about, I decided to just start dumping my thoughts onto the Internet.

I toyed with a number of different ideas, considering just a general movie review site, but came up with the idea of watching and discussing all of Woody Allen’s movies in order after I read an interesting article in Slate titled “I’ve Seen Every Woody Allen Movie: Here’s what I’ve learned“.

I’m obviously a big fan of Woody’s, and, unlike directors such as Stanley Kubrick or Martin Scorsese, whose work often feels like it’s going over my head, I feel like I “get” his movies, and think, in a general sense, that I understand what’s going on. I figured the format would let me rant about movies I love, and talk about some more obscure movies no one’s ever really discussed much.

2) If your site was an object or a piece of music, what would it be and why?  If my site was an object, it would be a funny-looking tree in an alley somewhere: every once in a while, someone who’s really into trees would stumble across it and go “huh, that’s kinda cool,” but most people never see it, and wouldn’t care if they did. If it was a piece of music, it would probably be a Rush song, because it bores most people to tears and goes on forever.

3) As best you can, please name your top five Woody Allen movies, and why?  Off the top of my head, right now, I’d say Annie Hall (1977), Manhattan (1979), Purple Rose of Cairo (1985), Hannah and her Sisters (1986), and Crimes and Misdemeanors (1989), five bold, funny, visually stunning films. That said, I’ve watched all those movies so many times, I feel ‘done’ with them, to a certain degree. If I was going to watch a Woody Allen movie tonight, I’d probably pick the messy, hilarious Stardust Memories (1980) or the incredibly entertaining Broadway Danny Rose (1984).

4) What is your least favorite Woody Allen Movie?  Of all the films Woody Allen has directed, The Curse of The Jade Scorpion (2001) and Hollywood Ending (2002) are the two I enjoyed the least. I don’t think I laughed a single time during either of them, and both they showcased a depressing lack of effort. At his worst, Allen’s movies can feel like filmed table-reads of unfinished scripts.

5) Has your site had any recognition in the press or by Woody himself?  If the Academy Awards can’t get Woody’s attention, I doubt I will. If Allen did somehow stumble across it, maybe after one of his grandkids sends him a link or something, he probably wouldn’t spend ten seconds on it. If he was in a good mood maybe he’d think it was kind of cute, but it’s more likely that he’d find it quite pathetic. He might even call Soon-Yi in and say something like, “look at this loser!” As for the press, I was once cited as a reference by The Guardian, which was probably unwise on their part, given my tendency to misquote people and mis-remember facts.

6) Do you have any unusual stories you can tell us about your site?  The best stories I have come courtesy of the bizarre messages I get via the contact page. Every week or two, someone (usually someone with very bad English, but not always) confuses my site with Woody Allen’s official site and sends me their acting resume and/or a request for an autographed photo. One time, someone even thought I myself was Woody Allen, writing about my own movies.

7) How was you first introduced to Woody’s work, and did you take to it straight away?  My parents were fans, and I remember watching Annie Hall with my mother when I was too young for that to be appropriate. For a long time, I don’t think about his movies too much, but then in the ’00s I remember seeing movies like Anything Else, Melinda and Melinda, and Match Point, and even though they’ve never been particularly well-regarded, something about them made them stand out from the other films coming out around the same time. It was enough to make me go back and watch movies like Crimes and Misdemeanors and Hannah and her Sisters and renew my superfan status.

8) If you had the opportunity to speak to Woody one to one, what would you say to him, and what would you hope his response would be?  I feel like I’ve read so many interviews with Woody, there’s not much about his movies left for me to ask him. Allen has demonstrated very questionable taste when it comes to his own movies – he claims that Hollywood Ending is one of his best pictures, and was so ashamed of Manhattan that he tried to block its release – so the stubborn part of me would probably want to try to convince him of how wrong he is. Other than that, I’d probably just want to hang out and pretend to be friends with him.

9) Now not to sound too facetious or pedantic in any way shape or form, but as a Woody Alan fan myself, I find that I am a lot like him in certain ways. Are you too Trev? And if so, how?  I think we share a pessimistic outlook on life as well as the tendency to be melodramatic. Woody and I are also both judgemental, self-pitying, and self-involved. We also have the same glasses.

10) What was your favourite Woody Allen era, and why?  After he finished his early, funny movies but before he started focusing on gravely serious chamber dramas, a period encompassing approximately 1977 to 1985, Allen made a series of ambitious, meticulously crafted, boldly original movies bursting with wit, intellect and insight. It’s a string of unbridled artistry unmatched in American cinema.

Review of Woody Allen’s latest movie “Blue Jasmine” Part 12

I have spent alot of time talking about Woody Allen films on this blog and looking at his worldview. Woody Allen’s “Blue Jasmine” packed New York and Los Angeles theaters after Cate Blanchett scored glowing reviews for her role as the wife of a Bernie Madoff-like swindler.

The movie, which opened in six theaters this past weekend, took in $612,000, researcher Hollywood.com Box-Office said today in an e-mailed statement. The film averaged $102,000 per screen, leading the weekend’s other new releases on that basis.

“Blue Jasmine” will rival “Midnight in Paris” as Allen’s top-grossing film, according to Michael Barker, co-president and co-founder of Sony Pictures Classics, which distributed both movies. This coming weekend “Blue Jasmine” expands to 50 cities, including Washington and San Francisco, the setting for much of the film, he said.

“You make a name with reviews and standing-room only crowds on opening weekend,” Barker said in an interview. “Then you open the film wider and wider. That’s how you get a movie like this to its highest gross possible.”

“Blue Jasmine” is a re-imagining of Tennessee Williams’s “A Streetcar Named Desire,” said Bloomberg critic Greg Evans, who gave the film four stars out of a possible five.

Blanchett plays Jasmine French, a Blanche Dubois stand-in who lands broke and broken on her sister’s doorstep in San Francisco after her Fifth Avenue lifestyle evaporates due to her crooked and philandering husband, played by Alec Baldwin.

Huge Openings

The film garnered an 85 percent positive rating out of 59 reviews aggregated by Rottentomatoes.com. That compares with 43 percent for Allen’s prior release, “To Rome with Love,” and 93 percent for “Midnight in Paris,” according to the website.

“Midnight in Paris,” which cost about $17 million to produce, garnered $56.8 million at U.S. and Canadian theaters after its release on May 20, 2011, according to researcher Box Office Mojo. During its opening weekend, that movie appeared in six theaters and sold $599,000 in tickets, the researcher said. Studios and cinema owners split ticket sales.

“The last few Allen films all enjoyed huge openings per theater when they started out in a handful,” said Paul Dergarabedian, president of Hollywood.com’s box-office unit. “He has a tremendous following and every one of his releases is an event and generally leads to filled up theaters on opening weekend.”

With “Blue Jasmine,” Sony Pictures Classics, a unit of Tokyo-based Sony Corp. (6758), is replaying its distribution strategy for “Midnight in Paris,” which remained in theaters for nine months, Barker said.

“This movie will be in theaters a long, long time,” he said.

Jasmine (born Jeannette) French, the exquisitely dressed chasm of need at the center of Woody Allen’s misanthropic comedy Blue Jasmine, may be among the most unpleasant of all Allen protagonists (and if you have any memory of Kenneth Branagh as a scuzzy celebrity journalist in Celebrity, or Allen himself as a solipsistic author in Deconstructing Harry, you know she has some robust competition). As played by Cate Blanchett in a theatrical, screen-engulfing performance that leaves the audience feeling alternately dazzled and asphyxiated, Jasmine is the neurotic Woody Allen WASP diva to rule them all. Washing down her Xanaxes with a vodka martini (or in a pinch—and Jasmine gets into a lot of pinches—a straight shot of vodka) as she narrates her constant, anxious inner monologue to whoever will listen, Jasmine attains the paradoxical state of being fascinatingly tiresome.

The same pair of words might be used to describe Blue Jasmine, which, whether you like it or not, surely counts as one of Allen’s more unexpected films of the past decade. After a string of wistful ensemble comedies set in romantic European capitals (Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Midnight in Paris, To Rome with Love), he’s made an existentially bleak single-character study that bounces back and forth between a New York not usually inhabited by Allen characters—the posh Park Avenue/Hamptons circuit of the Wall Street superrich—and a curiously denatured San Francisco that doesn’t seem like a place ever inhabited by anyone.

As the film begins, Jasmine, whose husband Hal (Alec Baldwin) has been imprisoned for Madoff-style financial crookery, is flying across the country (first-class, despite her pleas of being dead broke) to stay with her sister Ginger (Sally Hawkins). Ginger, a divorced mother of two who works bagging groceries, lives in a different world from her sister’s and has barely seen Jasmine since she married into the high life. Ginger’s also nursing an old grudge; years before, she and her then-husband (a surprisingly touching Andrew Dice Clay) were among the patsies who lost their life savings by entrusting them to the conniving Hal.

Over the next few months, Jasmine settles into an uneasy existence at her sister’s place, eventually taking a job she had at first dismissed as insultingly remedial: working the front desk for a lecherous dentist (the great Michael Stuhlbarg, wasted in a flimsy part). Jasmine and Ginger fight a lot, often about Ginger’s boyfriend Chili (Bobby Cannavale), a working-class Stanley Kowalski type who (understandably) resents Jasmine’s condescension and snobbery. Convinced that her impeccable taste qualifies her for a career as an interior designer, Jasmine resolves to take a computer course that—from the bits of it we see—seems to be a simple here’s-how-to-get-online adult education class, yet which also somehow involves hours of furrowed-brow nightly study. No one in the movie appears to find this strange or offers to save Jasmine the trouble by tutoring her in basic browser usage. (This computer-class subplot is a small part of the film, but Allen’s tone-deafness as to the role of technology in modern life is worth noting—no wonder the version of 2013 San Francisco he shows us feels so fuzzily unspecific.)

This mismatched pair of sisters—one short, brunette, earthy, and reasonably happy, the other tall, blond, ethereal, and miserable—soon find themselves in romantic hot water. Ginger pursues a flirtation with a gentle sound engineer (Louis C.K. in a tiny role), infuriating her hot-tempered boyfriend. And Jasmine, upon meeting a cultured, wealthy diplomat (Peter Sarsgaard), proceeds to invent a new past for herself out of whole cloth, one that doesn’t contain a crooked husband or a now-estranged stepson.

The choices Jasmine makes are so consistently reckless and self-sabotaging—and Blanchett’s performance so tremulously risky—that it’s impossible not to get a little caught up in the sickening momentum of her free-fall through the class system, as Allen cuts between her high-living past (charity fundraisers, polo ponies, cocktail-party debates about the value of owning a jet) and her modest living conditions in the present day. But Allen misses chance after chance to make this into something more than a vaguely topical reboot of A Streetcar Named Desire (to whose general storyline it hews fairly closely). The male characters in particular come off as too schematic: Almost without exception, they are either predatory rascals or clueless schlubs, mere foils for the squabbling, suffering sisters. As for Ginger and Jasmine, we spend an inordinate amount of screen time in their company without ever learning much about the complexities of either their past or present relationship. They were both adopted, we’re told at one point—but why does Ginger insist her sister was always their mother’s favorite? What was it about their upbringing that caused them to grow up into two such different people? (Judging from the unsympathetic portrait he draws of Ginger’s two hefty, obnoxious sons, Allen seems to hold childhood in about the same esteem as the sourly unmaternal Jasmine.)

Jasmine’s various pathological behavior patterns are on ample display—in scene after scene, we watch in squirming half-sympathy as she traps herself with self-aggrandizing lies. But though Blanchett excels at making us feel horrified pity for her character—especially in the last quarter of the film, as it becomes clear Jasmine’s spiritual redemption is probably not around the corner—her performance never sheds a certain stunt-like, calculated quality. Blanchett’s lavish, almost operatic turn as Jasmine sloshes against the sides of this insubstantial movie like liquid in a too-small container (maybe the room-temperature Stoli Jasmine is continually downing). There are many moments in which, as a viewer, you notice and admire Blanchett’s gestures and inflections, but very few in which you understand her deluded character’s motivations from the inside. She disintegrates beautifully before our eyes, not for any specific set of reasons the film maps, but because that’s what tragic heroines like Blanche DuBois (whom Blanchett played onstage in 2009, to general acclaim) are there to do.

As the movie’s last scene approaches—one of the darkest endings to a Woody Allen film I can remember, and one which gives the lie to this movie’s classification as a comedy—Jasmine has come unmoored from the relationships and belief systems that kept her tethered to reality: She’s become the kind of lady who walks around mumbling in a chic Chanel jacket, her mordant invective comprehensible only to herself. I doubt the director meant for Jasmine to be his stand-in at that moment, but I couldn’t help seeing the resemblance.

Review of Woody Allen’s latest movie “Blue Jasmine” Part 10

I have spent alot of time talking about Woody Allen films on this blog and looking at his worldview. He has a hopelessmeaningless, nihilistic worldview that believes we are going to turn to dust and there is no afterlife. Even though he has this view he has taken the opportunity to look at the weaknesses of his own secular view. I salute him for doing that. That is why I have returned to his work over and over and presented my own Christian worldview as an alternative.

My interest in Woody Allen is so great that I have a “Woody Wednesday” on my blog www.thedailyhatch.org every week. Also I have done over 30 posts on the historical characters mentioned in his film “Midnight in Paris.” (Salvador Dali, Ernest Hemingway,T.S.Elliot,  Cole Porter,Paul Gauguin,  Luis Bunuel, and Pablo Picasso were just a few of the characters.)

Today we are looking at a review of Woody Allen’s latest movie Blue Jasmine.

Review: ‘Blue Jasmine’ a bleak but moving gem

Cate Blanchett may join writer-director Woody Allen’s list of Oscar-winning actresses in her role as Jasmine, a victim of Wall Street and her own denial.

She’s come undone. The title of one of my favorite Wally Lamb novels about a woman over the edge kept running through my mind as I watched Woody Allen‘s new film “Blue Jasmine.”

There’s just no better way to put it. Jasmine, in such a paralyzing state of denial and played with such broken vulnerability by Cate Blanchett, is coming completely undone.

It is Allen’s bleakest drama ever.

Jasmine’s unraveling becomes the conduit for a stinging ironic jab at the Bernie Madoffs of the world and their particular brand of greed. Jasmine was married to one of them, and the question of how much she knew is significant.

Yet for all of “Blue Jasmine’s” darkness, the movie is among the filmmaker’s most emotionally affecting. Allen is surprisingly sensitive in exposing Jasmine, one of those affluent New York sophisticates so easy to dislike. Even the melodrama attached to her new struggles — a suddenly empty bank account, a mindless job, no closet space — realities that frame everyday life for most women, is subtly calibrated to allow us to feel for her. And occasionally laugh at the absurdity of it all.

Women and their neuroses have long been one of Allen’s strong suits. The writer-director’s juicy, complex roles have earned Oscars for a string of actresses: Diane Keaton in “Annie Hall,” Dianne Wiest in “Hannah and Her Sisters” and “Bullets Over Broadway,” Penélope Cruz for “Vicky Cristina Barcelona.” Even one of his lesser films, “Mighty Aphrodite,” made Mira Sorvino an Oscar winner.

“Blue Jasmine” could well do the same for Blanchett.

As many indelible roles as the Aussie actress has already had in her career — Queen Elizabeth I, twice; Galadriel in the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy and “The Hobbit”; the iconic Katharine Hepburn in “The Aviator,” which would win her an Oscar — the actress reaches new depths in portraying great weakness. For all that Jasmine has done, all the hurt for which she is responsible, we don’t want her to break.

The whys of Jasmine’s slow dissolve into delusion unfold over the course of the film, though there are clues from the start. The plane ride to her new life in San Francisco has her seatmate caught in the slipstream of Jasmine’s memories. It helps set up many of the film’s moral quandaries as well as the patter that is Jasmine’s default for navigating sticky social situations. The truth and the lies so seamlessly blend that even she loses track.

The memories always get to a mention of “Blue Moon.” The song was playing when she first met her handsome husband and the line “you saw me standing alone” gains poignancy as the film goes on. While the questions about her husband’s crimes and misdemeanors gain intensity.

A pitch-perfect Alec Baldwin portrays the charismatic Hal, a successful investment broker with many indiscretions. He is the architect of her rise and the reason for her fall.

The film moves between Jasmine’s various realities with a kind of natural ease, helped no doubt by the long tenure of the director’s crew: production designer Santo Loquasto, editor Alisa Lepselter, costume designer Suzy Benzinger, casting directors Juliet Taylor and Patricia DiCerto, plus a relative newcomer, cinematographer Javier Aguirresarobe, who shot “Vicky Cristina Barcelona.”

Jasmine’s idolized past feels both out of reach and untouchable. The elegant Manhattan apartment, the perfectly cushy beach house, the couple’s spot as one of the elite in New York’s high society. Even Hal’s overachieving son Danny (Alden Ehrenreich), whom Jasmine raised as her own, has all the right Ivy League touches.

There are only hints of her recent past — a lost job in a high-end NYC shoe store, a fallout with Danny, the therapy, the pills, the breakdown. The present is a corner of her sister Ginger’s (Sally Hawkins) cramped S.F. flat.

There are some unnecessary contrivances to explain the sisters’ differences in looks and what life has handed them. But at heart, the relationship is fraught for all the typical reasons.

As to the future, at first Jasmine can’t see one. That discontent brings some lighter moments. Her stint as a dentist’s receptionist and her elaborate plans to become an interior designer echo Allen’s distinctive comic voice.

That this is San Francisco is barely relevant. It feels a departure for a filmmaker for whom “place” is so often a defining factor. “Manhattan,” “Midnight in Paris” and his last “To Rome With Love,” to name a few.

There are larger and smaller forces at work. Though Jasmine’s plight is in part due to the Wall Street collapse, her failing marriage is also at fault. Like so many high-end moneymen, Hal played a risky game on the personal front as well. An FBI investigation put him behind bars for mishandling other people’s money. Jasmine levies the penalty for his other women.

Among Hal’s victims were Ginger and her ex, Augie (Andrew Dice Clay) — their small lottery winnings and their marriage quickly down the drain. Ginger’s new love is Chili (Bobby Cannavale), a mechanic with an easy smile and a quick temper. Jasmine’s distaste for the latest “loser” in her sister’s life soon does its work. But Allen makes clear which of his savages are the noble ones.

I don’t imagine the director has spent much time in the blue-collar world, but helped by excellent turns by Hawkins, Clay and Cannavale, he settles in nicely. A wonderfully testy exchange between the sisters over Jasmine’s first-class ticket to San Francisco is a classic.

A cocktail party seems to promise a new life for both sisters. Ginger meets Al (Louis C.K.), a sweet-talking salesman. Jasmine meets a dashing young diplomat, Dwight (Peter Sarsgaard). And for a while, the clouds clear.

Allen has given us a protagonist driven by many of the same demons he’s explored in other, earlier morality tales. In “Blue Jasmine,” the fable is a twisted version of trickle-down economics restaged, reconsidered. Jasmine’s excesses he may forgive, the end leaves room for debate. Wall Street’s he does not.

Review of Woody Allen’s latest movie “Blue Jasmine” Part 9

I have spent alot of time talking about Woody Allen films on this blog and looking at his worldview. He has a hopelessmeaningless, nihilistic worldview that believes we are going to turn to dust and there is no afterlife. Even though he has this view he has taken the opportunity to look at the weaknesses of his own secular view. I salute him for doing that. That is why I have returned to his work over and over and presented my own Christian worldview as an alternative.

My interest in Woody Allen is so great that I have a “Woody Wednesday” on my blog www.thedailyhatch.org every week. Also I have done over 30 posts on the historical characters mentioned in his film “Midnight in Paris.” (Salvador Dali, Ernest Hemingway,T.S.Elliot,  Cole Porter,Paul Gauguin,  Luis Bunuel, and Pablo Picasso were just a few of the characters.)

Today we are looking at a review of Woody Allen’s latest movie Blue Jasmine.

Want to see great acting, from comic to tragic and every electrifying stop in between? See Cate Blanchett in Blue Jasmine. Woody Allen, in rare form, puts Blanchett front and center in this hommage to Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire, spinning hilarious but mostly harsh truths about love in the time of financial cholera. That’d be now.

Blanchett plays Jasmine, who fancies herself the glamorous type, much like Blanche DuBois in Streetcar. Jasmine is married to Hal (Alec Baldwin), a Bernie Madoff-like financier who puts Jasmine in two chic pumpkin shells, one on Park Avenue, the other in the Hamptons, places where she’s morally blind to his misdeeds. Until, well, she isn’t blind anymore.

Talking to herself and gobbling Xanax with a vodka chaser, Jasmine is melting down. She flees to the cramped San Francisco apartment of Ginger (Sally Hawkins is the definition of wonderful), the adopted sister Jasmine had dismissed as a loser.

Allen deftly uses flashbacks to fill us in on the backstories. Remember Stanley Kowalski, the crude cave man Marlon Brando created in Streetcar? Ginger has two of them. First is Augie (a shockingly effective Andrew Dice Clay), Ginger’s ex-husband and father of her two sons. Then there’s Chili (the ever-superb Bobby Cannavale), her new boyfriend cut from the animal mold. In Streetcar, Blanche tells her sister, “Don’t hang back with the brutes.” Jasmine doesn’t utter those words. She doesn’t have to: Blanchett’s eyes say it all. Both women look for a savior. Ginger dates up with the seemingly sympathetic Al (Louis C.K., nailing every nuance). Jasmine reaches out to Dwight (the excellent Peter Sarsgaard), a diplomat with a political agenda for which Jasmine is well suited – until her past looms. Allen sends out each laugh about money and class with a sting in its tail.

Blanchett, who has played Blanche in Streetcar onstage, is the film’s glory. She is miraculous at finding the bruised heart of this bullying elitist. If her struggle doesn’t win respect, it does earn our empathy. The sight of Jasmine – lost, alone and unable to conjure magic out of unyielding reality – is devastating. This is Blanchett triumphant, and not to be missed.

Review: A compelling ‘Blue Jasmine’

Woody Allen’s last few films have been romantic comedies set in such picturesque locales as Paris and Rome. Now with his new film, “Blue Jasmine,” Allen is back in the United States (San Francisco and New York specifically), and romantic comedy is the furthest thing from his mind.

When we first meet Jasmine French (Cate Blanchett), she is on flight to SFO, ensconced in first class, chatting merrily with the older woman sitting next to her, having a cocktail and looking every inch the fashionable, wealthy Manhattanite.

It is not until she gets to her destination that this picture of a woman of the One Percent starts to dissolve. Her seatmate (Bay Area theater veteran Joy Carlin) has no idea who Jasmine is and

is dismissive of her chatter. When her monogrammed luggage comes up on the carousel, she initially has no idea what to do with it — as if waiting for a limo driver to suddenly appear and handle everything.She arrives at her sister’s “house” in San Francisco, only to discover it is a nondescript apartment building in the Mission. Standing alone on the sidewalk, Jasmine looks completely lost and more than a bit frightened.

“Where am I, exactly?” Jasmine asks plaintively at one point.

And thus begins the story of Jasmine, a morality play of fractured trickle-down economics that explores, often brilliantly, the worlds of haves and have-nots and what happens when the elite find that their status can be transitory. Allen’s best movie in some years and certainly his finest drama with comedy since 2005’s “Match Point,” it is a tale of wealth, greed and corruption — and the shock waves that occur when crimes lead to punishment.

Certainly, Jasmine’s story is a familiar one inspired by our modern times, a spin on the story of Bernie Madoff and, more specifically, on the story of Madoff’s wife, Ruth. Jasmine’s husband Hal (a pitch-perfect Alec Baldwin) is an investment king whose world is made up of pyramid schemes and offshore accounts. He is a charming man but also a soulless human being who, when Jasmine’s working class sister Ginger (Sally Hawkins) and brother-in-law Augie (a very effective Andrew Dice Clay) hit the lottery, bilks them of their money. That he also cheats on Jasmine with regularity plays a part in the tale.

When the government catches on to Hal’s schemes, he’s off to jail — and his (and Jasmine’s) money is seized by the feds. She has to give up the Manhattan apartment and the house in the Hamptons and (horrors of horrors) move to Brooklyn. Soon, she’s down to the designer clothes on her back and those monogrammed suitcases. She’s popping Xanax, living on Stoli vodka and wondering where all her socialite friends have

gone.Eventually, the state of affairs drives her to San Francisco and her sister’s apartment, which Jasmine finds unappealing. The good-hearted Ginger (Hawkins plays the role beautifully) loves Jasmine but is appalled by her excesses. Their verbal battle over why Jasmine flew first class when she has no money is a priceless bit of writing.

Not that Ginger doesn’t have problems of her own. In the wake of Hal losing their money, Augie has split, and Ginger is now spending time with the hunky but quick-tempered mechanic Chili (the always-watchable Bobby Cannavale).

For a time, though, Ginger and Jasmine have a bit of happiness. Jasmine gets a taste of her old life back when she goes to a party in Marin and meets a diplomat (Peter Sarsgaard) who thinks she would be the perfect wife for his career. Ginger meets a seemingly sweet salesman (Louis C.K.).

Allen’s writing and direction is sharp, thoughtful and emotionally charged — although Bay Area audiences may be disappointed that the ability he has shown to capture a sense of place isn’t in evidence when it comes to San Francisco. Much of the film (in flashback) is set in New York, and the local scenes really could have been set in any major city.

The heart and soul of “Blue Jasmine” is Blanchett, who has done some extraordinary acting in film (an Oscar for 2004’s “The Aviator”) and on stage. (In 2009, she did a critically acclaimed turn as Blanche in “A Streetcar Named Desire” — a role that has a lot in common with Jasmine.) But this is her finest piece of work, and she makes the often dislikable Jasmine into a compelling, complex character whose grand delusions are eventually her downfall. Her ability to portray both Jasmine’s high moments and her low points makes for an extraordinary character study.

In lesser hands, the final scenes of “Blue Jasmine” might have had gone for redemption and the possibility of a better future. Instead, it comes down to one last wrenching moment, one last bit of extraordinary acting by Blanchett.

For this former princess of the One Percent, a happy ending is elusive.

Review of Woody Allen’s latest movie “Blue Jasmine” Part 7

I have spent alot of time talking about Woody Allen films on this blog and looking at his worldview. He has a hopelessmeaningless, nihilistic worldview that believes we are going to turn to dust and there is no afterlife. Even though he has this view he has taken the opportunity to look at the weaknesses of his own secular view. I salute him for doing that. That is why I have returned to his work over and over and presented my own Christian worldview as an alternative.

My interest in Woody Allen is so great that I have a “Woody Wednesday” on my blog www.thedailyhatch.org every week. Also I have done over 30 posts on the historical characters mentioned in his film “Midnight in Paris.” (Salvador Dali, Ernest Hemingway,T.S.Elliot,  Cole Porter,Paul Gauguin,  Luis Bunuel, and Pablo Picasso were just a few of the characters.)

When Cate Blanchett first cruises into Woody Allen’s “Blue Jasmine,” playing a Park Avenue matron fallen on hard times, she looks like a million bucks. She’s wearing pearls and a white Chanel jacket, with an Hermès bag as big as a Shetland pony hanging off one arm. It’s the sort of important accessory worn by women accustomed to being chauffeured around town. Soon after, though, as she stands with her monogrammed luggage on a nondescript San Francisco sidewalk, she looks frightened, alone — like someone who could benefit from some kindness. Instead, she waves off a stranger and, posing a question that’s as existential as it is practical, demands, “Where am I, exactly?”

She’s in the Mission, for starters, but Jasmine French — this lost, lonely woman brilliantly brought to quivering life by Ms. Blanchett — is more properly in a Woody Allen movie, his most sustained, satisfying and resonant film since “Match Point.” A moral fable about greed and comeuppance, crimes and misdemeanors, “Blue Jasmine” begins with a socialite brought low and evolves into a tragedy that becomes far greater than her own. It’s a familiar story with a few of the usual suspects, starting with the husband, Hal (a perfect Alec Baldwin, all smile and no soul), an investment type who has talked high yields all the way to prison. The government took him, and then it took the rest, leaving Jasmine with little more than her designer threads and luggage.

Blanchett, Blanche — the names seem fated for each. Mr. Allen has said that he didn’t see Ms. Blanchett play Tennessee Williams’s most famous creation in Liv Ullmann’s celebrated 2009 production of “A Streetcar Named Desire” at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. (Jasmine’s appalled aside about being forced to move to Brooklyn after being priced out of Manhattan amusingly suggests why he didn’t.) Whatever his inspiration, he has been rummaging around in the classics for decades, so his appropriation of “Streetcar” doesn’t surprise. What does is his reimagining Blanche by way of another figure who changes depending on how you hold her up to the light, Ruth Madoff, the wife of Bernard L. Madoff, the investor turned avatar of a fallen world. It’s a masterly stroke that puts Jasmine’s dissembling into fresh, chilling perspective.

From the moment Jasmine appears on screen she’s broken, and her contradictions — along with the vodka she guzzles and the Xanax she pops — keep her in pieces. She’s pathetic, absurd, complaining about being broke one minute and explaining why she flew first class the next. As she slips from tremulous flirtations to soused meltdowns, she elicits gasps of compassion and snorts of derision. Jasmine, née Jeanette, having reinvented herself, had risen to become a member of New York’s elite but, with everything gone, has come to San Francisco to move in with her sister, Ginger (played with anxious sincerity by Sally Hawkins). For Jasmine this isn’t a comedown, it’s a catastrophe — everything is. When she first walks into Ginger’s apartment, she stops dead, as if paralyzed by its unspeakable ordinariness.

It’s hard to know if Mr. Allen shares Jasmine’s shock at Ginger’s place. (Mere mortals will note the ample square footage, natural light and fireplace.) With a series of sharp contrapuntal flashbacks that move forward in time — Hal and Jasmine in their empty new Park Avenue apartment and then later presiding over a dinner bathed in light so burnished golden calf must have been on the menu — Mr. Allen illustrates just how drastically she’s been humbled. The flashbacks tell part of the story, as does Jasmine’s faraway stare, her mood swings and the patter that telegraphs her privilege (“I don’t know how anyone can breathe with low ceilings”) and which, over time, will sound like the ravings of a homeless woman you might see in certain neighborhoods, the one in ratty furs pushing a cart.

Once moved in with Ginger, Jasmine flutters about, cementing her resemblance to the mothlike Blanche. The allusions to “Streetcar” are copious and obvious, and spotting the quotations initially feels like a kind of humorous parlor game, from the French connection that links Blanche and Jasmine’s names to Mr. Allen’s staging of a violent skirmish, which echoes a similar one in Elia Kazan’s film adaptation. Underscoring the resemblances, Jasmine repeatedly explains that “Blue Moon” was playing when she met Hal, memories that evoke the blue piano that, as Williams wrote in “Streetcar,” expresses “the spirit of the life which goes on here.” In the play, Blanche also says that Stanley isn’t the type who goes for jasmine perfume, an aside that carries an accusation.

The specter of Stanley and his white undershirt lives on, if with critical differences, in the figures of Ginger’s ex-husband, Augie (Andrew Dice Clay), and her current lover, Chili (Bobby Cannavale). Each registers as a caricature, with a broad accent and performance, and a swagger that implies a threat. But Mr. Allen isn’t making a case against them, and neither descends into cliché partly because, for all their macho bluster, the two are openly feminized, as if their libidinal energies were being put to better use. Augie and Chili take issue with Jasmine, but they don’t brutalize her, much less set out to destroy her. She has, Mr. Allen suggests, already done the job herself.

That’s harsh and also conveniently reductive: Jasmine may be guilty of a great deal, including blinkered entitlement, but the world of big money in which she moved played its role. So, too, did Hal, perhaps the story’s only real villain, but who, like Augie and Chili, never emerges as a serious countervailing force to Jasmine as Stanley is to Blanche. As if to make up for this missing piece, Mr. Allen himself advances the strongest argument against Jasmine. If he never succeeds in diminishing her appeal, it’s both because Ms. Blanchett maintains a vise grip on the character’s humanity and because it becomes inexorably clear that, while losing her money helped push Jasmine over the edge, it was also the dirty, easy money, what it promised and delivered, that drove her nuts to begin with.

What did Jasmine know, and when did she know it? These questions come to haunt “Blue Jasmine,” and as the past catches up with the present, they help drive this moving, sometimes funny film toward its shattering end. If at times Mr. Allen seems to be answering those questions by pulling the film in one direction even as Ms. Blanchett pulls it in another, this productive dissonance deepens the tension and stakes and, as with a climactic confrontation between Jasmine and Hal, can turn a raw scene into a revelation. This particular battle takes place in their living room, a mausoleumlike shrine to their wealth, painted green, where, against the color of money, they fight for their lives, frantically taking swings at each other without a thought to everyone else they are about to take down.

Woody Allen’s interest in giving audiences what they want has been on the wane since Small Time Crooks, but it returns with a vengeance in Midnight in Paris, a classic crowd-pleaser from a man increasingly prone to self-indulgence and alienating retreats into his own mind. Allen has formed many different relationships with his audience over the years — sometimes we’re his surrogate therapist, sometimes he’s a professor lecturing us on the ways of the world, sometimes we’re a testing ground for half-finished ideas — but this time he’s back in the role of entertainer, telling jokes and orchestrating a good time. This is not one of the movies he’s made for himself, this is a movie for us.Midnight in Paris has a lot in common with a lot of different Woody Allen movies. The one it gets compared to most often is The Purple Rose of Cairo, although I’d argue that its true spiritual successors are Bullets Over Broadway and Sweet and Lowdown — slick, streamlined comedies with energetic and slightly off-kilter senses of humor. Midnight in Paris would have fit right in with Allen’s ‘90s movies.The movie opens with establishing shots of its setting, Paris. As with Match Point and Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Midnight in Paris uses its city as more of a backdrop than an environment. Every exterior shot seems delicately framed to shout ‘Paris!’ at the top of its lungs. This suits the material of the surrounding movie perfectly — it’s about being in love with Paris, so it makes sense that the cinematography is in love too.

The opening “Best of Paris” montage is followed by Allen’s trademark white-on-black credits. Instead of music, the credits are soundtracked with the movie’s first conversation between the as-of-yet-unseen protagonists. This approach is new for Allen, but the actual conversation couldn’t be more familiar. The lead characters are Gil (Owen Wilson), a struggling novelist, and Inez (Rachel McAdams), a castrating harpy. Two characters straight out of the Woody Allen Screenplay Factory.

Gil is a wildly successful screenwriter who churns out hit movies but has nothing but disdain for his job, which is not the easiest thing to relate to. Woody Allen is one of the only people in history to have had the luxury of getting bored of making popular movies and millions of dollars at the same time, a fact which he doesn’t seem to realize. Another thing that’s not quite as universal as Allen seems to think is their style of travel — they stay in palatial hotel suites bigger than most New York apartments, just like Allen did in Wild Man Blues.

What separates Gil (slightly) from the scores of struggling, stuttering novelists that populate Woody Allen movies past is that Allen seems very affectionate towards him. If you think about Josh Brolin in You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger, Jason Biggs in Anything Else or even Sam Waterston in September, they’re all vaguely pathetic, a trait perhaps borne of Allen’s self-deprecation. This time, though, he’s a lovable goofball and you can feel Allen rooting for him. He even relinquishes one of his rare happy endings.

The rest of the characters, perhaps accordingly, are two-dimensional antagonists. Inez (Gil’s fiancé) and her parents are hyperbolically critical, dismissing and insulting Gil constantly, often in front of others. It’s believable that Gil and Inez would fall out of love over the course of the movie, but the fact that they’d ever be together in the first place is beyond credible (even by the standards of a movie involving time travel).

The other antagonist is Paul (Michael Sheen), who plays one of the great villains in the Woody Allen universe: the pseudo-intellectual. Remember that scene in Annie Hall where Allen righteously schools the blowhard in front of him in the movie line? That scene is now taken and elevated to subplot, with Gil filling in for Alvy Singer, Paul filling in for the guy in line, and Pablo Picasso filling in for Marshall McLuhan.

While the characters may not be deep, the performances are pitch-perfect. Wilson is effortlessly amiable, Sheen has a good time reveling in his villainy, and McAdams is as unpleasant as I’m sure she was meant to be.

What Gil really wants to do is write a novel (of course). He’s got one started about a man who operates a nostalgia shop which allows him to live in the past, in the eras in which he felt like he was meant to have lived. Gil, like all of Allen’s novelists and playwrights, has based the lead character on himself. Gil too dreams of having lived in another time, namely 1920s Paris, where he imagines he’d spend his nights hobnobbing with F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, Gertrude Stein and Pablo Picasso.

The movie’s big twist, of which I’m sure you’re aware, is that Gil stumbles upon a town car that picks him up at midnight and transports him back to the 1920s. Once there, Gil meets all of his above-mentioned idols, and many more, all of whom conveniently happen to be hanging around together and greatly interested in meeting him.

Taken on their own, the present-day Paris scenes with Inez and Paul are not much different from (or much better than) any of Allen’s weakest ‘00s comedies, but this time their obviousness and simplicity has a purpose. Like Mia Farrow’s one-dimensionally bleak reality in The Purple Rose of Cairo, they help illuminate the protagonist’s desire (and need) to escape into fantasy. If Gil’s reality was less oppressive, it wouldn’t make as much sense for him to spend his evenings traveling backwards through time, nor would it be as cathartic when he does.

As soon as Gil embarks on his journeys through time, the movie gleefully abandons the staid, over-familiar relationship drama and explodes with live-wire comic energy. Gil meets everyone from the Fitzgeralds (Scott and Zelda) to Ernest Hemingway to Salvador Dali, or, more accurately, hilariously exaggerated versions of them.

“Don’t you see? I’m traveling through time. I’m from the 21st century.” “Yes, this makes sense.” “Yeah, but you guys are surrealists. I’m just a normal guy.”

Gil also runs into Cole Porter, Josephine Baker, T.S. Eliot, Luis Buñuel, Man Ray, Henri Matisse, Gertrude Stein, Pablo Picasso, and perhaps others I’m forgetting (or didn’t recognize). Most of them only stick around for a minute or two, if that, but they all make an impression, and none overstay their welcome. The cameo has been described as the lowest form of entertainment, which is perhaps true, but Midnight in Paris offers the highest form of cameos.

One review (which I can’t find now) referred to it as “Night at the Museum for Liberal Arts majors,” which is funny, but only sort of true. There are a few references that wink at fans — like when Hemingway looks around the bar and says, ‘it’s like a moveable feast,’ or when Gil pitches to Luis Buñuel a film about people who go to dinner and can’t leave — but for the most part, Allen does not demand much savviness from the audience. The jokes are broad and rely on only the most widely-known biographical details. Allen typically doesn’t suffer fools who don’t share his interests, but he’s uncharacteristically egalitarian this time around.

In other words, Midnight in Paris is to these great literary figures as Mighty Aphrodite was to Greek mythology. If you’re worried you’re going to miss the jokes because you haven’t read The Great Gatsby lately, you can stop worrying.

My favorite, and the most heavily featured, of the historical guest stars is Ernest Hemingway (Corey Stoll). Not unlike Penelope Cruz in Vicky Cristina Barcelona, he hilariously operates on a slightly different plane of existence than everyone else around him and refuses to engage anyone on their own terms. The two also share a sort of casual intensity. Just as Maria Elena mentioned to Cristina in passing that she had considering killing her, Hemingway responds to Gil’s innocent questions about writing with stories about hunting lions or fighting in trenches, and is prone to spontaneously challenging people to fights.

The only person Gil meets that you definitely did not learn about in an English or Art History lecture is Adriana (Marion Cotillard), a beautiful (and fictional) French woman who’s serving as Picasso’s muse but has her eye on Gil. With her tendency for flightiness, she’s not as stable as Inez, but she’s sexy, fun, and not as critical. This puts Gil in that most common of Woody Allen male dilemmas. Adriana is Pearl to Inez’s Eve, Nola to her Chloe, Helen Sinclair to her Ellen, Dorie to her Isobel, Sam to her Sally, Melinda to her Susan, and so forth and so on.

As in Purple Rose of Cairo, Allen is able to make some pretty good self-aware jokes about the absurdity of the premise. Just as Tom Baxter’s cast members struggled with the ramifications of a character leaving the screen, Gil struggles to explain his situation to Inez. When a detective is assigned to follow Gil, he somehow winds up even further back in time and gets chased out of King Louis XVIII’s throne room and executed by the royal guard.

As the fantasy sequences continue, they slowly start to lose steam (the inspiration is perhaps a little front-loaded). Near the end of it, Gil and Adriana start to get a bit tired of this movie’s manic 1920s Paris as well, and are transported into a new era, La Belle Époque (pre-WWI Paris), where more famous faces start to show up: Toulouse Lautrec, Paul Gaugin, and others.

Gil finds out that Adriana disdains her present as much as Gil disdains his own, and just like he fantasizes about the 1920s, she fantasizes about the 1890s. They then find out that the Belle Époque artists dream about having lived in the renaissance with Titian and Michelangelo. So, Gil realizes, maybe the problem is not which era you happen to be a part of, it’s just that the fantasies of another time and place are bound to look better than the reality of your current existence.

“I’m having an insight right now. It’s a minor one, but I’m having it. The present is unsatisfying because life is unsatisfying. But this, this isn’t real, it doesn’t work.”

This message — about how reality is disappointing when viewed in comparison to fantasy — is similar to the one from The Purple Rose of Cairo, although there are a few differences. For one thing, Cairo was a lot more insistent — Allen was lecturing us on the nature of life, and he was not taking questions. This time the issue is raised more gently, as if Allen’s aware that, by this point, people are having a pretty good time and aren’t really in the mood for another bummer ending.

How the lesson unfolds for the characters is also different. Mia Farrow’s Celia was never the master of her own destiny, but Gil is. He takes what he learned from Adriana and acts on it, setting out to create a reality that hopefully won’t require so much fantasy. Celia, on the other hand, was never in a position to do that, so fantasy was forever going to play a major part in her life. In Purple Rose of Cairo, it was the audience being taught a lesson, but this time it’s Gil.

As the movie ends, Gil leaves Inez, moves to Paris, and walks home with a nice French girl he met at the market while a Sidney Bechet song plays them off. Happy endings are rare for Allen, and endings this conventional even more so. Gil takes the lessons he’s learned over the course of the movie and acts on them in order to improve his life, and in doing so, faces a bright new beginning as the movie ends. It’s a Frank Capra resolution in a Woody Allen world.

As is always the case with Woody Allen period movies, the production values are outstanding. Allen’s long-time production designer Santo Loquasto, who retired after Whatever Works, has been replaced by Anne Seibel and Hélène Dubreuil, who were Oscar-nominated for their work on Midnight in Paris. The streets, bars and houses are realistic, as far as I can tell, but more importantly, they’re vivid and exciting, filmed with a nostalgic soft-focus fuzziness. Many of the period outfits, apparently, are genuine historical artifacts and nearly 100 years old. The most spectacular scene is a surrealist wedding in a dining hall flamboyantly decorated with taxidermy.

Midnight In Paris marked yet another so-called comeback for Allen, but this time it was more dramatic than usual. Its gross was double that of any Woody Allen movie since Hannah and her Sisters and over 10 times more than most of the ones in the last decade. Critics showered it with near-universal praise and it won a slew of awards, including an Oscar for Allen. Glowing reviews and awards were once things that Allen could once take for granted, but now they’re a rarity for him. The most impressive part of all is that Midnight in Paris did not, like Small Time Crooks or Husbands and Wives, get a big studio push. It received a very limited release at first, and slowly rolled out into more and more theatres based on its success. It was never destined to be a hit, it just became one by its own accord.

It makes sense that Midnight In Paris would be a huge hit, as it is funny, high-spirited and has an interesting cast, a catchy premise and even a tidy, happy ending. What doesn’t make sense, at least to me, is why the rest of Allen’s movies are so unpopular. The seemingly all-things-to-everyone comic masterpiece Bullets Over Broadway garnered a fraction of its success, and for nearly a month straight Midnight in Paris was making more money each weekend than Sweet and Lowdown made in its entirety. These are discrepancies that neither I nor Woody Allen understand (as he said in Woody Allen: A Documentary, “I’ve never been able to understand why some of my movies are so much more popular than others. To me they’re all equally appealing, or unappealing”).

Midnight In Paris doesn’t really feel like a personal movie for Allen. He seems preoccupied with craft and more concerned with making sure no one gets bored than with expounding his philosophies or probing his esoteric interests. Which is exactly what makes Midnight in Paris a good movie, but also what stops it from being a great one.

Fun Facts

  • The general idea for Midnight in Paris was born decades earlier, as evidenced by this old Woody Allen stand-up bit in which he imagines himself hanging out with Ernest Hemingway and Gertrude Stein:
  • Carla Bruni has a small role as a tour guide. She was the first lady of France at the time, but she and her husband Nicolas Sarkozy have since been booted out of office.
  • Owen Wilson in Midnight in Paris and Jeff Daniels in The Purple Rose of Cairo (in his role as the actor, not the adventurer) have the same name.
  • At one point, Zelda Fitzgerald tries to commit suicide by jumping into the Seine River, just as Peter Sellers did in What’s New Pussycat 47 years earlier.
  • F. Scott Fitzgerald has appeared in a Woody Allen movie before. He played himself in Zelig (sort of).
  • Ernest Hemingway’s granddaughter Mariel co-starred with Woody Allen in Manhattan.
  • When Owen Wilson was cast, Allen heavily re-wrote the character (a rarity for Allen) to better suit his laid-back sensibilities.
  • Wilson, like me, assumed that Allen had seen him in something like Bottle Rocket or The Royal Tenenbaums, but it turns out Woody was a big fan of Wedding Crashers (which I guess also explains Rachel McAdams’ presence).
  • Quentin Tarantino, a surprisingly avid Woody Allen fan, named Midnight in Paris as his favorite movie of 2011.
  • When offered their parts, the actors were not given the script or told the name of their character (even the ones playing famous historical figures). They were just given a handful of lines of dialogue.
  • Rachel McAdams and Michael Sheen met on the set of this movie and are now a couple with a child together.
  • Allen offered the role of Ernest Hemingway to Corey Stoll after seeing him in the play A View From a Bridge, which he had gone to see because it also starred his old pal Scarlett Johansson.
  • Stoll was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award.
  • Woody Allen won an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for the third time and first since Hannah and her Sisters. Of course he didn’t show up to receive the award, but his name was read out by Angelina Jolie as she splayed out her leg in now-famous fashion.
  • Midnight in Paris was also nominated for Best Picture (first time for an Allen movie since Hannah and her Sisters) and Best Director (first time since Bullets Over Broadway).
  • Since the Best Picture prize goes to a movie’s producers, that means that Allen’s sister/producer Letty Aronson is now also an Oscar nominee.
  • Midnight in Paris and its award-season competition had a lot in common: Martin Scorsese’s Hugo was set in Paris in 1930s, a mere decade after (some of) the events here, and is about silent film director Georges Méliès, who Gil could very easily have run into during his midnight time travels; The Artist also took place in the ‘20s, and while it wasn’t set in Paris, it did have a French writer/director and star.
  • Midnight in Paris was a great success to be sure, but it’s often exaggerated. To put it in perspective a little bit: Manhattan was the 6th highest grossing movie of 1979, while Midnight in Paris was the 58th highest-grossing movie of 2011, behind Water for Elephants and the Justin Bieber concert movie.
  • I posted this review on the same day To Rome With Love was released into theatres in the United States. The moment I catch up, I’m suddenly a year behind.

Review of Woody Allen’s latest movie “Blue Jasmine” Part 6

I have spent alot of time talking about Woody Allen films on this blog and looking at his worldview. He has a hopelessmeaningless, nihilistic worldview that believes we are going to turn to dust and there is no afterlife. That is why I have returned to his work over and over and presented my own Christian worldview as an alternative.

As my friend and colleague Peter Biskind says, Blue Jasmine is the first Woody Allen film in a while that doesn’t feel like a promising draft that might have benefited from another run through the typewriter. Rather, I think the writer-director accomplished exactly what he set out to accomplish this time. It’s just, I’m not sure how much I liked the result. It’s not you, Woody, it’s me.

Blue Jasmine might be Allen’s cruelest film ever, which is saying something, since this is a director who’s never been particularly generous toward his characters. In significant ways, though, it’s also one of Allen’s most human movies. Mild spoiler alert: this is a film that draws deep from the well of A Streetcar Named Desire. Cate Blanchett, who has played Blanche du Bois onstage, is here cast as an updated version of Tennessee Williams’s anti-heroine, Blanche’s reveries about a faded Southern aristocracy replaced with contemporary delusions bred by life as lived among the 1 percent in Manhattan and the Hamptons. The film begins with Jasmine (née Jeanette) arriving in San Francisco, broke but still flying first class, the dazed victim of a financial scandal involving her former husband. Now homeless, she is forced to rely on the comfort of her estranged sister, Ginger, who is romantically involved with a blue-collar lug named Chili. (Although we see Chili in a wife-beater, he refrains from shouting, Hey, Ginnnnn-gerrrrrr!!!!)

Like Streetcar, Blue Jasmine is the story of Jasmine’s further humbling, of upper-class pretension dashing against the rock of working-class earthiness; also like Streetcar, Allen’s work shares its heroine’s snobbery, the director as appalled as Jasmine by Chili’s and Ginger’s gaucheries, their lack of interest in high culture, their aspirational void. A scene where Chili and Ginger try to set up Jasmine, still clinging to her Chanel bag, with a schlubby, grease-monkey pal of Chili’s is cringe-inducing, though more because of the writer-director’s condescension toward his working-class characters than for their cluelessness as matchmakers. That said, Allen does grant Chili and Ginger good hearts, and as a director he has elevated his occasionally tone-deaf script by casting Bobby Cannavale and Sally Hawkins, both excellent here.

I was glad to see Allen trying to break out of his usual movie universe, that hermetic Upper East Side fantasyland (extending to Europe) where money is almost never an issue and even teenagers go to the opera and dig Sidney Bechet. Blue Jasmine is engaged with contemporary culture and social politics to a degree that Allen’s films have rarely if ever been since maybe Manhattan. (Though I think in 2013 even a cosseted Park Avenue wife would know how to use a computer.) And has he ever really tackled class before, aside from Match Point, which might just as easily have been set in Balzac’s Paris? The new film means to be a post-crash fable, and the fact that we leave Jasmine as blind and delusional as we found her is, perhaps, a nice satirical point (one Elizabeth Warren might appreciate). As human drama, though, it’s all a bit cruel. Jasmine, you see, is not just blind and delusional—she is also alcoholic and mentally ill, and looked at one way the film is a serial humiliation of a woman who, no matter how awful and pretentious and complicit-or-not in her husband’s crimes she may be, we come to have affection for. This is thanks in large part to Blanchett, who allows us to glimpse the fear, panic, and vulnerability beneath Jasmine’s surface, even at its most lacquered. The performance is like watching a gorgeous vase will itself to keep from shattering as it falls floorward.

Allen has been cruel to many other of his characters, most memorably in Crimes and Misdemeanors, and he’s also left many other characters as prisoners of their own stasis and delusions—The Purple Rose of Cairo and Vicky Cristina Barcelona come to mind. But I’m not sure any of those other characters were quite as fully realized as Jasmine, which is naturally tribute to Allen and Blanchett and their alchemy together, but it also made the film, for me, hard to take. (A minority opinion given the reviews I’ve read.) I saw sadism in it, beyond the usual misanthropy. (Love misanthropy!) Or, put another way, Blue Jasmine feels like tragedy without catharsis—an interesting thing to pull off, but not particularly moving or maybe even admirable.
