Open letter to Speaker of the House John Boehner (Part 29)

Dear Mr. Speaker,

I know that you will have to meet with newly re-elected President Obama soon and he will probably be anxious for you to raise taxes and  federal spending, but he will want you to leave runaway entitlement programs alone. When that happens then you have one thing you can hold over his head and that is the debt ceiling.

You must stand up to him and tell him that you can not raise it. In December of 2012 or January of 2013 at the latest we will be shutting down the government if we don’t increase the debt limit according to the LA Times. You got to listen to the Tea Party heroes like Rep. Todd Rokita, Ben Quayle (R-AZ), Jeff Landry (R, LA-03), Raúl R. Labrador , Tim Huelskamp,  Rep. Congressman Davis Votes Against Debt Ceiling Increase

Washington, Aug 1 -Congressman Geoff Davis made the following statement after voting against S. 365, the Budget Control Act of 2011.  The bill passed the House of Representatives by a vote of 269 to 161.“I commend our Leadership for their tireless efforts throughout this process.  This bill makes a number of positive steps toward beginning to address our fiscal problems and also averts default, but I chose to vote against it for two main reasons.  “First, unlike the original House version of the Budget Control Act, this bill decouples the passage of a Balanced Budget Amendment with the second portion of the debt limit increase.  This was an important component of the original bill and making the second debt limit increase contingent on its passage would have a lasting impact on getting spending in check.“Second, while there is certainly room for cuts and efficiency improvements in every federal agency and program, I have concerns about the method by which cuts would take place if the Joint Select Committee did not work as intended.  For the sake of our country, I hope the Committee is successful and reports to Congress a deficit reduction package that addresses the true cost drivers.  However, in the event that does not happen, the sequester mechanism could be devastating to defense during a time of war and to Medicare when health care providers are already facing cuts thanks to President Obama’s health care law.

“The fight to ensure our country is on sound fiscal footing in the future for our children and grandchildren does not end with this vote.  Over the course of the past year, House Republicans have been successful in changing the debate in Washington from whether to cut spending to how much to cut.  The magnitude of our fiscal woes cannot be resolved overnight and I look forward to continuing to work for a better and more sustainable path forward.”

Rep Fleming to Obama: STOP Insulting the American People

 
 

Washington, Jul 15 –

Congressman John Fleming, M.D. released the following statement today reacting to President Obama’s news conference on the debt ceiling negotiations with Republican and Democrat Congressional leadership throughout the week. This news conference offered little more than a photo opportunity for President Obama to merely show that he is somewhat interested in solving our nation’s financial problems. 

“Once again we see our Campaigner-in-Chief take the podium today with NO real solutions to solve this debt ceiling crisis. He would rather to vilify job creators instead of embracing them. Instead of taking responsibility for our debt surging 35% during his term, President Obama chose to blame Republicans for our nation’s financial problems and then has the nerve to cite erroneous polls that say Americans are in favor of tax increases when that could not be farther from the truth. This further proves that President Obama is a complete failure when it comes to leading on this important issue,” said Congressman Fleming. 

Congressman Fleming added, “Republicans have put forth real solutions like CUT, CAP, and BALANCE – a balanced budget amendment along with budget cuts and spending caps that will take us further towards fiscal sanity. This will ensure that future generations of Americans are not riddled with debt. Mr. President, stop insulting the American people with your misguided solutions to these problems that will have little or no effect.”

Dr. John Fleming is Chairman of the Natural Resources Subcommittee on Fisheries, Wildlife, Oceans and Insular Affairs and is a member of the House Armed Services Committee. He is a physician and small business owner and represents the 4th Congressional District of Louisiana.

Scalise statement on passage of the Budget Control Act

Washington, DC — Congressman Steve Scalise today issued the following statement after the House passed the Budget Control Act, a two-step proposal to cut and control Washington spending, provide permanent accountability with a balanced budget amendment, and an increase in the debt ceiling to preserve the full faith and credit of the United States.

“The Budget Control Act marks the beginning of the critical process to cut and control Washington spending so we can ensure accountability by getting back to a balanced budget while also preserving the full faith and credit of the United States,” Scalise said.  “While this is far from the final solution to our debt problems, this vote begins to change the culture of Washington and the broken system of spending.  Achieving a solution to Washington’s spending problem should not be about what’s best for the President’s next election, it should instead be about what’s best for America.  It is long past time for the President and the Senate to take up this common-sense agreement and stop playing games with America’s future.

Rep. Harris Votes Against the Debt Ceiling “Deal” 

Washington, DC – Today, Rep. Andy Harris voted against the debt ceiling increase. The plan did not require passage of a balanced budget amendment, which Rep. Harris feels is essential to bringing permanent common sense accountability to Washington.

“A balanced budget amendment is the only way to make sure the federal government spends what it takes in and lives within its means,” said Rep. Andy Harris.  “Over the past few weeks I have repeatedly voted for reasonable proposals to raise the debt ceiling that included passage of a balanced budget amendment. But I didn’t come to Washington to continue writing blank checks. Maryland’s families and job creators sent me to Congress to permanently change the way Washington does business.  I appreciate Speaker Boehner’s remarkable, historic efforts to craft a proposal to solve the debt ceiling issue.  But today’s debt ceiling deal just doesn’t go far enough to build an environment for job creation by requiring passage of a balanced budget amendment to bring permanent common sense accountability to Washington.”

Currently, the U.S. Government has a national debt of $14.3 trillion and runs an annual deficit of $1.65 trillion.

Dear Mr. Speaker,

I know that you will have to meet with newly re-elected President Obama soon and he will probably be anxious for you to raise taxes and  federal spending, but he will want you to leave runaway entitlement programs alone. When that happens then you have one thing you can hold over his head and that is the debt ceiling.

You must stand up to him and tell him that you can not raise it. In December of 2012 or January of 2013 at the latest we will be shutting down the government if we don’t increase the debt limit according to the LA Times. You got to listen to the Tea Party heroes like Rep. Todd Rokita, Ben Quayle (R-AZ), Jeff Landry (R, LA-03), Raúl R. Labrador , Tim Huelskamp,  Rep. Michele Bachmann, Washington, Jul 29 –

Washington needs fundamental changes to the way it spends taxpayer dollars. Never has this kind of change been more urgent than now, when the federal government is running a deficit of $14.3 trillion. Right now, every household in America bears a burden of $130,000, and every individual owes $46,600.

Even with these incredible numbers, President Obama is still calling for an increase in the debt limit, which equates to more borrowing from our future generations. 

Because I know that government spending is no different from spending by individuals, families, or businesses, I remained firmly opposed to raising the debt limit. No entity can borrow indefinitely, spending money it doesn’t have, without paying it back.

President Obama has also proposed raising taxes as a way around our debt crisis. But it is important to remember that tax hikes will only hurt America’s small businesses and stifle job creation. This is at a time when unemployment across the nation stands at an unacceptable 9.2 percent. More taxes give Washington more time to delay reform of its scores of wasteful programs and agencies.   

It is an outrage that hardworking and responsible Americans are being shackled with the debts from bloated spending by our federal government. It is time for Washington to break the habit and get its fiscal house in order.

Cravaack Statement on Debt Limit Deal

Washington, D.C.– U.S. Representative Chip Cravaack (MN-8) issued the following statement after the House approved the Budget Control Act of 2011: 

“I could not support the amended Budget Control Act passed by the House this evening.  While I applaud this bi-partisan effort to avert a default on our nation’s debt, the measure approved by the House does very little to reduce our bloated deficit; it merely slows its growth.  This legislation will not ensure our nation’s AAA credit rating nor provide for a Balanced Budget Amendment before the debt limit is raised.  Regrettably, this compromise risks cuts to seniors’ Medicare and veterans’ benefits, and up to a 50% cut to military funding – all the while the U.S is conducting three military operations abroad and China continues to emerge as a global super power and rival model of governance. 

We must do better to protect our nation’s prosperity for future generations.

Just recently, I voted for ‘cut, cap, and balance’ and to raise the debt ceiling; however, I gave my word to advocate the core, fiscally conservative principles my constituents in the 8th District entrusted upon me last November.  I will remain an independent voice in Washington – if the numbers don’t add up, I’m not voting for it.”

Cutting Defense to Pay for Deficit Spending is No Solution

Washington, DC – Congressman Todd Akin (R-MO), Chairman of the Seapower and Projection Forces Subcommittee, a known fiscal conservative who has been standing for structural reforms in response to the deficit spending crisis, released the following statement on the new debt ceiling proposal:

“Providing for the common defense is one of the most important roles of the federal government, and is clearly required by the Constitution. At a time when we still have thousands of our men and women in the line of fire, dramatic defense cuts are simply unacceptable. In the worst case scenario, this bill could result in roughly $1 trillion in cuts to the military. Almost half of the debt ceiling increase may come at the expense of our national defense. I believe that many of my colleagues on the Armed Services Committee share my deep concerns with the defense cuts proposed in this plan.

“While Speaker Boehner and others have been negotiating in good faith, I am concerned that this new proposal may actually make it less likely that we can address the central problem of radical deficit spending. While this new proposal has a balanced budget amendment as one option for a future debt ceiling increase, I do not believe that the President or Democrats in Congress will be willing to support a balanced budget amendment while there are other paths available to them that allow for continued deficit spending.

“While some argue that a balanced budget amendment is unachievable with the current political landscape in Washington, our nation needs a balanced budget amendment now more than ever. We have had problems with deficit spending for much of our history, but we are approaching the point of no return. A balanced budget amendment would force us back on a responsible path. If not now, when? If not us, who?

“The plan before us today fails to address the problem at hand, and it threatens to severely degrade our national defense with a trillion dollars in cuts to our military. For these reasons, I am opposing this bill.”

I have faithfully sent spending cut suggestions to Senator Mark Pryor every Monday for almost a year now and at the same time I have posted all of them on www.thedailyhatch.org every monday after they have been sent electronically.

I have suggested cutting out the complete Dept of Education on several occasions.

Here are a few more I just emailed to him myself:

GUIDELINE #4: Terminate failed, outdated, and irrelevant programs.
President Ronald Reagan once pointed out that “a government bureau is the closest thing to eternal life we’ll ever see on earth.” A large portion of the current federal bureaucracy was created during the 1900s, 1930s, and 1960s in attempts to solve the unique problems of those eras.
Instead of replacing the outdated programs of the past, however, each period of government activism has built new programs on top of them. Ford Motor Company would not waste money today by building outdated Model T’s alongside their current Mustangs and Explorers. However, in 2004, the federal government still refuses to close down old agencies such as the Rural Utilities Service (designed to bring phones to rural America) and the U.S. Geological Survey (created to explore and detail the nation’s geography).
Government must be made light and flexible, adaptable to the new challenges the country will face in the 21st century. Weeding out the failed and outdated bureaucracies of the past will free resources to modernize the government.
Status Quo Bias. Lawmakers often acknowledge that certain programs show no positive effects. Regrettably, they also refuse to terminate even the most irrelevant programs. The most obvious reason for this timidity is an aversion to fighting the special interests that refuse to let their pet programs end without a bloody fight.
A less obvious reason is that eliminating government programs seems reckless and bold to legislators who have never known a federal government without them. Although thousands of programs have come and gone in the nation’s 228-year history, virtually all current programs were created before most lawmakers came to Washington. For legislators who are charged with budgeting and implementing the same familiar programs year after year, a sense of permanency sets in, and termination seems unfathomable.7 No one even remembers when a non-government entity addressed the problems.
The Department of Energy, for example, has existed for just one-tenth of the country’s history, yet closing it down seems ridiculous to those who cannot remember the federal government before 1977 and for whom appropriating and overseeing the department has been an annual ritual for years. Lawmakers need a long-term perspective to assure them the sky does not fall when a program is terminated. For example, the Bureau of Mines and the U.S. Travel and Tourism Administration, both closed in 1996, are barely remembered today.8
Instead of just assuming that whoever created the programs decades ago must have been filling some important need that probably exists today, lawmakers should focus on the future by asking themselves the following question: If this program did not exist, would I vote to create it? Because the answer for scores of programs would likely be “no,” Congress should:
  • Close down failed or outdated agencies, programs, and facilities, including:
  1. The U.S. Geological Survey9 (2004 spending: $841 million, discretionary);10
  2. The Maritime Administration ($633 million, discretionary);
  3. The International Trade Commission ($61 million, discretionary);
  4. The Economic Development Administration ($417 million, discretionary);
  5. The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program ($1,892 million, discretionary);
  6. The Technology Opportunities Program ($12 million, discretionary);
  7. Obsolete military bases;
  8. The Appalachian Regional Commission ($94 million, discretionary);
  9. Obsolete Veterans Affairs facilities;
  10. The Rural Utilities Service (-$1,493 million,11 mandatory); and
  11. Repeal Public Law 480′s non-emergency international food programs ($127 million, discretionary)

This is how bad it is getting:

  • Discretionary spending is the portion of the annual budget that Congress actually determines.
  • Since 2000, discretionary outlays surged 79 percent faster than inflation, to $1,408 billion. The “stimulus” is responsible for $111 billion of 2010 discretionary spending.
  • Between 1990 and 2000, $80 billion annually in new domestic spending was more than fully offset by a $100 billion cut in annual defense and homeland security spending, leaving (inflation-adjusted) discretionary spending slightly lower.
  • Since 2000, all types of discretionary spending have grown rapidly.
  • Overall, since 1990, domestic discretionary spending has risen 104 percent faster than inflation and defense/security discretionary spending has risen 51 percent.

Dear Mr. Speaker,

I know that you will have to meet with newly re-elected President Obama soon and he will probably be anxious for you to raise taxes and  federal spending, but he will want you to leave runaway entitlement programs alone. When that happens then you have one thing you can hold over his head and that is the debt ceiling.

You must stand up to him and tell him that you can not raise it. In December of 2012 or January of 2013 at the latest we will be shutting down the government if we don’t increase the debt limit according to the LA Times. You got to listen to the Tea Party heroes like Rep. Todd Rokita, Ben Quayle (R-AZ), Jeff Landry (R, LA-03), Raúl R. Labrador , Tim Huelskamp,  Rep. Hartzler says “Enough” to more government borrowing and more cuts to defense; votes “No” on debt ceiling agreement

Congresswoman Vicky Hartzler (MO-4) has taken a stand for fiscal discipline and a strong national defense, voting against the latest bill to increase the nation’s debt ceiling.

“I appreciate House Speaker John Boehner’s rejection of liberal demands for a blank check debt limit increase and liberal calls for tax increases, but the solution approved by Congress and sent to President Obama dramatically cuts our national defense,” said Hartzler. “This agreement strips $350 billion from the Base Defense Budget and has the Obama Administration bragging that this is, ‘the first defense cut since the 1990’s.’ The package also leaves the door open to the possibility of $500 billion in defense cuts down the road. This is unacceptable! The simple truth is that the United States Constitution requires the federal government to do only a handful of things – the most important of which is to provide for our national defense.”

“I also have concerns about a watered-down Balanced Budget Amendment provision,” continued Hartzler. “This agreement forces a vote on the Balanced Budget Amendment, but does not require it to pass and be sent to the states for ratification. I worked hard to include language requiring not only a vote on a BBA, but for the House and Senate to pass the Amendment and send it to the states. Only a Balanced Budget Amendment can force Washington to live within its means as American families must do. It is only through spending discipline that America can secure its future economic freedom.”

“Despite my opposition to this legislation, I am pleased that Republicans are changing the debate in Washington,” concluded Hartzler. “We will continue to work to control spending, solve America’s huge debt problem, and balance our budget.”

Rehberg Statement on House Rejection of Senate Debt Limit Plan

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Montana’s Congressman, Denny Rehberg, released the following statement regarding the rejection of Senator Reid’s debt limit plan by the U.S. House.

“The House has passed two bills to cut current spending, control future spending and finally bring the same fiscal accountability to the federal government that Montana families and 49 states already have.  Now, finally, the Senate has proposed a plan and put it down on paper.  That’s a huge step, and while it’s certainly not the plan I would prefer, at least now we can sit down and try to find common ground to bring this crisis to a responsible end.  As it’s currently written, Senator Reid’s plan relies on more budget gimmicks instead of real spending reductions.  It delays necessary spending control until after the election.  And it brings absolutely no accountability to the federal government.  It may be good politics for the President’s re-election, but it’s not good policy for the hardworking American taxpayer.  But it’s a start, and I’m eager to role up my sleeves and find a solution that can pass.”
